Excellent guitar album, Hendrix is pretty much unmatched! It's a record that's so good it's actually boring lol Like every track is like "oh boy, ANOTHER absolute banger." That said, my favorite is Third Stone From the Sun, which is kind of an implosion of what the rest of the record sounds like.

This album is phenomenal and I'm still confused at how Jimi was able to make the music he did at such a young age.

One of the real gems in my collection of vinyl. I suspect that Third Rock and Red House are a bit under appreciated by the general populace but both hold very dear spots on my list of favorites. And if my baby don't love me no more, I know her sister will!

This is one I grew up with on vinyl and eventually bought my own copy on vinyl. It is a very important and solid album. The Wind Cries Mary is my personal favorite as it's a little more harmonious than some of the others. That's my favorite Jimi.. The man who gives us his luxurious voice accompanied by groovy guitars. I resonate more with this Jimi than the screaming guitars and feedback or the quickfire pace of Manic Depression or Third Stone from the Sun. I once had a very serious head-on collision to Watchtower and to be honest even though I have nothing against it, I really haven't listened too much to his music since that time-- at 15. Just because it brings back that horrific crash.

I know this is controversial but I’ve never been a Hendrix fan. I’m not super into the 60s psychedelic sounds generally. But I can appreciate his artistry and skill.

I'd like to think I am experienced. And at over 400 albums in on the 1001 list, one thing I am experienced at is wading through a lot of mediocre "must-listen" albums in order to find the gems that break the ratings scale. "Are You Experienced?" is one of those gems. I could do without "Third Stone From the Sun," and "Stone Free" could actually use a little less cowbell, but aside from those two minor foibles this is an absolutely incredible album. Hendrix was so much more than just an amazing guitarist, and this album really put all of his experiences and talents together to show us all that not matter how experienced we might be, no one else will ever be Jimi. I would turn it up to 12, but the most I'm allowed to give is 5.

Pure. Fucking. Brilliance. Hendrix is one of one as a guitar player. At one point in my life I would have vehemently argued Mitch Mitchell as the greatest drummer of all time. I’m not there today, but his effort on Fire is one of my favorite percussion performances of all time. He is still one of my favorite drummers. If the track list were reduced to: Purple Haze, Manic Depression, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, Foxy Lady, Stone Free, and Red House (the greatest hits tunes I was intimately familiar with previously), this album would be an 50 out of 5. Note I was going to go 10 out of 5 as an extreme, but jkav and p-ass already went to 12 and 11 respectively. I won’t be out extremed!!! It took me 4 listens to appreciate the lesser known tracks, but I’m down. If I could throw one track away, it would be the title track. Regardless, this is still easily a 5 out of 5.

Bestes Hendrix Album bisher!

Hendrix was a game changer, a pioneer, a true legend. However, nigh on 50 years later we’ve heard Hendrix and those that were inspired by him to push the boundaries further than Hendrix would ever have imagined possible. Hendrix would look at Tom Morillo as an alien from another planet much the way Hendrix was viewed in his day. This takes nothing from Hendrix but changes the way we hear him today. There are great songs on the album, but because we aren’t blown away by his pioneering sound any more, the album relies more heavily in the strength of the songs rather than the uniqueness of his style and mastery. The truth is these songs aren’t that strong and begin to sound pretty same same with the exception of a notable few.

I’m completely aware of how sacrilegious this might sound, but despite playing guitar for over half of my life I’ve never actually listened to a Jimi Hendrix album from front to back. Better late than never! Songs I already knew: Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Foxey Favourites: Purple Haze, Foxey, May This Be Love It’s common knowledge that Jimi was a revolutionary guitar player, but I don’t think that his vocals are talked about quite enough. His smooth baritone definitely deserve more recognition as it sounded frankly divine. The song compositions were amazing throughout the album, displaying excellent rock sounds with a pinch of funk for good measure. I thoroughly enjoyed this album and would consider it quite exceptional. I can see why the world loved him, and why the world grieved so much when he passed away so young. I definitely recommend everybody gives this a listen.

Classic listening experience.

Classic album

This album is so good. I love the live feeling energy on it. Jimi’s songwriting and lyrics are so good (Wind Cries Mary and May this Love are two of my favorites). I love his voice and his vocal delivery is so cool.Really love Mitch Mitchell’s drumming on this album, so fluid like the wind or the rain - perfectly locked in with Jimi’s playing and all the cymbals saturate the space and glue everything together. The jam and kid in me was freaking out over Third Stone from the Sun ( it gets so out with the rhythmic displacement with the bass and drums). Jimi’s voice on the guitar is so unique often imitated but never replicated). The title track is so cool - the heavy pulsating of the reverse drums - the psychedelic lyrics. The intro to Foxey Lady is so cool how it swells into the that heavy groove. Really great blues on Red House. Love the drums on manic depression. I could talk about this album all day.

This is the first music I have a conscious memory of hearing, and I listened to this record pretty much everyday between the ages of 3-10. I can’t even begin to describe how important this record is to me. I could go on and on but this record is absolutely legendary and one of the most important things to ever happen to rock n roll. 10/5

After having found the original UK version; then onto to American version (with different songs); then falling in the rabbithole of why to listen to which version. Finding out that the song order on the later US version is more to Jimi Hendrix' liking, but that he was pissed the Americans left his songs like "Red House", "Can You See Me" and "Remember" off, I just created my own playlist with all the songs of the original version, added the single's and put them onto the U.S. versions order. And was a great 2 hours of dicking around with an incredible album. So here we are: "Puple Haze" "Manic Depression" "Hey Joe" "Red House" "Love Or Confusion" "May This Be Love" "I Don't Live Today" "Can You See Me" "The Wind Cries Mary" "Fire" "Third Stone From The Sun" "Foxey Lady" "Remember" "Are You Experienced?" Now, Jimi Hendrix has never released that 'perfect' album that some people have, but this one is as close as you're going to get to it. 4,5*

Jimi Hendrix is obviously an incredible musician and that shines through on his debut album. I can only imagine what it would have been like to hear this at the time as it is pretty revolutionary in its style. The best songs are May This Be Love (although the mix is questionable), Hey Joe and the title track. Along with other tracks that appeared on other releases of this album, such as Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary, the latter of which I think is one of the greatest songs of all time. I have already listened to this album three times and will certainty be listening to it again 4.75/5

Jimi Hendrix is in my opinion one of the greatest artist of all time. I just love this album it´s of of my favourite by the Jimi Hendrix Experience . On this album are so important songs for me personally .I really enjoyed listening to it every time I do.

'SCUSE ME WHILE I KISS THIS GUY! WOOOO Oh and there's 10 more songs on this album that I have almost no recollection of. "Third Stone From The Sun" had a kick-ass instrumental, I'll give it that. I like Jimi Hendrix when we fully embraces that he's the best guitar player in history and goes full ham (so the entirety of Electric Ladyland). This album mostly seemed kind of empty. Probably just me.

Awesome Jimi!

Jimi's one tone voice and half-baked "heys" really don't inspire me. His guitar work is good enough; and the band occasionally breaks out of its locked basement of blues riffery, but not nearly often enough! Favorite track: 'The Wind Cries Mary'

Jimi's debut and a great hard/psyc rock album

Hard to put it in words. Would have loved to have seen him live, I mean the bass and drums are absolutely spot on too but Jimi just had everything. I'm in pieces here can't cope. One of the greatest albums of any genre.

It almost feels sacrilegious to not rate this 5 stars, yet... it just didn't feel as solid as other albums I love. The music is great and the guitar work is good, but it just lacks something. Compared with the other Hendrix album this just didn't speak to me. It's still good but I don't expect to be returning to it any time soon.

Jimi is another one of those artist that you always hear about, but never really listen to (Jimi, NOT Jimmy - I LISTEN to him all the time). It doesn't pull any punches right from the beginning. Is there any song that represents the late 60s more than Purple Haze? This dude could rock! A couple of other standouts were that Garth favorite, Foxey Lady (Garth Algar, NOT Garth Brooks) - I couldn't help doing the dance myself - and Third Stone from the Sun, which has a catchy little hook that I know has been sampled about a million times (OK, according to Google, seven - but I've heard the Dooby Bros so often that it seems like a million - https://www.whosampled.com/Jimi-Hendrix/Third-Stone-From-the-Sun/sampled/?ob=1 ). Overall a nice trippy rockin' trip to the 60s.

Well, what an a incredible album, but still one that I don't especially enjoy. However, the non-hit, non-bluesy ones (it should be established now I how feel about the blues sound) were really cool, especially Are You Experienced. I can see why Jimi is a big deal. But I'm good.

An actual "rock classic" album that doesn't suck. I listened to the 17-track version which is better in my opinion, as it flows much better and has some iconic songs.

I much prefer Electric Ladyland instead. There were more familiar tracks in this album but it's alright. Maybe it'll grow on me? Not sure though.

Incredible debut. 3/4 of the tracks on this album are stone cold classics. The only fault is the muddy sound that comes close to doing his revolutionary guitar work a disservice. Not enough of a fault to rate this any lower than 5 stars though. Just an amazing record front to back.

Jimi Hendrix recordings have always sounded otherworldly and chaotic - much like the tunes themselves.

Undeniable talent, each of these songs is great, though the entire album did start to wear on me after a while. Still though, you make Purple Haze, you can do whatever you want.

Crazy to be writing this but I don't think I've ever listened to a Jimi Hendrix record front to back. You hear his songs all the time but looking forward to sitting down with more time to listen. Purple Haze is clearly recognizable immediately and if the rest of the album can match it, I'll be pleasantly surprised. Hey Joe was one I saved, then learned it's already a super popular song to cover.

Best Song: The Wind Cries Mary. The album is full of examples of Hendrix setting fire to tracks, burning it all down as he plays these iconic guitar solos that everyone's become familiar with now. What I like about this song is how gentle he sounds, both in voice and guitar. Worst Song: Red House. Sounds a bit too much like a standard blues track. Overall: Feels like the best that classic rock has to offer. Mildly psychedelic, marked by Jimi's excellent voice and 9bviously virtuosic guitar playing. Maybe too long, it's got a bit too much fat on it to warrant a 5 from me, but still phenomenal, obviously.

One of my favorites already.

It's crazy that not only are all of these songs on one album, but it's their debut album.

Another artist I mainly know from the ‘greatest hits’. And so many of those are crammed in here. And with the different production styles this doesn’t feel like an album, but more of a compilation . However, is was revelation. Some great tunes here that were new to me, and even for a guitar-solo-sceptic such as myself, there is more than enough invention to make this irrelevant. I have probably heard Third Stone before, but it was good to hear it in amongst the rest and sounded fresh to these ears as a consequence.

I went through a Hendrix phase back in 1989 during my final teenage years. I rinsed his three albums so much that I haven't really touched them since. Over 30 years later seems like a good time to revisit them. There are some tracks on Are You Experienced that I don't remember - which is a little odd. I've moved away considerably from my earlier rock outlook. But I'm still something of a sucker for a powerhouse trio. Even if you listen to this album away from what must have been a revolutionary new sounds when it was first released, this is still a very, very powerful album.

I knew the US & UK versions had different covers but was surprised to learn they had some different tracks and track ordering. Never occurred to me in 30 years of listening to AYE despite knowing Beatles albums did this. So, today I listened to the original North America track order and afterwards the original UK order. Unsurprisingly I prefer the NA order. Purple Haze and The Wind Cries Mary in the NA version are vastly superior to Can You See Me and Remember in the UK version. North American version is a 5 and one of my favorites of all time; UK version is a 4.5 and rounds to a 5. Third Stone From The Sun is possibly my favorite song of all time.

It’s the best Jimi ever was. Killer tunes, wailing guitar, rock the fuck out. I dig.

Very big 60s psychedelia/hippie rock phase in my young adulthood. I’ve probably listened to this a hundred times, but not recently. Of course it still holds up, mind blowing sound for a trio. Very near top performance right out the gate.

Favorite songs: Purple Haze, Manic Depression, Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary, Highway Chile, Red House I was surprised by how good the drumming was on some songs. Playing around with the dynamic range on songs like I Don’t Live Today was pretty cool

So the US version is very good, but it omitts Can You See Me, which I love, the brit version omitts Purple Haze and Hey Joe, so I'm gonna judge every song. I mean, It's Hendrix. Hendrix is literally the most important guitarist of all time. Though I don't know if I can give this album a 5/5, because I know where Hendrix will go from it. It's a 4/5 got sure, but man, he WILL do better from this. And my favorite Hendrix songs are almost exclusively from the next two albums. It's a damn fine album. But I have to give it a 4/5 I'm afraid. This for me lacks the magic of Axis and Electric Ladyland. Those have Little Wing, If 6 was 9, Voodoo Child and All Along The Watchtower, and those hit HARD. This one has Purple Haze and Foxy Lady, but else, idk. Really feels bad to do this, but yeah: 4/5

The album that redefined what was possible with a guitar. Hendrix is of course transcendent, but attention should also be paid to Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums)-their tight, locked-in groove gives a sturdy frame to the six-string fireworks.

I can now say that I am indeed Experienced. Hendrix's debut is a classic for a reason. Melding fusions of R&B, Jazz, and a bit of Blues Rock and creates a wholly new style of psychedelic & harder rock. I used to listen to this album when I first started learning how to play guitar. Let’s be real — this record is one of the best of all time, and I don’t usually say that! Jimi has a unique voice, both from his throat and through his guitar. None of the songs bleed together, all are distinct from one another and fantastic. You can very clearly hear how Hendrix takes existing musical styles and approaches and rearticulates them into something new.

On the short list of best debut albums ever. Nothing else to say. Best track: Hey Joe

p122. 1967. 5 stars Sounds as fresh today as when it was first issued. Not a weak track on this. Hugely influential. Raised the bar for every other guitarist without ever straying in wankage, although you can argue that Third Stone From The Sun outstays its welcome. Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell on top form. Packed with genuine rock classics. This one is essential listening.

Hendrix is the shit. It’s crazy to think that an artist could lock in on their sound in a debut album. It’s quintessential Jimi right from the jump. So many bangers on this one. It’s damn near perfect.

The debut album by Jimi Hendrix and considered to be one of the best albums of all time. After listening to this album and songs so many times, I initially had difficulty deciding how to listen to it this time. I decided on what influences and styles am I hearing. And, I heard at core, blues, jazz, some funk, folk, Indian Raga and a lot of Yardbirds. But most of all, it was Hendrix's guitar solos, noises, layers, rhythm and everything else that took the fusion of those styles over the top to make it so unique and great. This album was recorded over five months in 16 sessions at three different locations in London. Jimi had moved to London several months earlier at the request of his manager, Chas Chandler, to recruit band members which then included Noel Redding (bass) and Mitch Mitchell (drums). This is one those albums chosen by the Library of Congress to include in the National Recording Registry for its cultural significance. Yes. Besides the previously mentioned how, the other question is what songs and order of songs are you going to listen in and to. There is a different UK version which excluded the three previously released singles and a different album cover than the US version. Actually, there are six different track listings for this album. I went with the CD version which included all 17 songs. How could the US version not include "Red House?" Does song order matter on this album? Maybe? I don't know. Although, the last song does need to be "Are You Experienced?" Hard to pick out favorites here. Pretty much all classics or at least something interesting to say. "Purple Haze" starts things off (on the US version) with just a classic guitar intro. The guitar then takes a pyschedelic turn sounding like the Byrds. The rhythm section is classic blues. I always liked the chaotic and pyschedelic "Manic Depression" which has a weird time signature (3/4) more like a waltz. Hendrix's cover of "Hey Joe" is the song that got him recognized in NYC. The first thing I think of when I hear "Fire" are Mitch Mitchell's drums but the bass and Jimi's solo are awesome too. One of my favorite Hendrix songs is "Red House", classic blues sounding like the Yardbirds, starts out with more of BB King influenced riff and then Jimi takes it to a whole another world with his solos and improvisation. Listening to and reading about this album brought up memories of seeing the Hendrix exhibit at Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture. I think the exhibit is permanent, definitely worth checking out. Ah, and I have two more Hendrix album coming up at some point. Lucky me.

I Don't Live Today is a classic for a good reason. Fire is a classic for a good reason. Third Stone from the Sun is meh. Foxey Lady is a classic for a good reason. And so on and so forth...... I love this album.

Genre: Blues Rock 4/5 One of rock and roll's all-time best debut albums, yet serves only as a brief glimpse of what was to come, and unfortunately would end too soon, Are You Experienced (UK or US tracklist) is one of blues rock's best albums ever. Jimi Hendrix, who needs no introduction, is probably rock and roll's greatest guitarist. His precision strikes mixed with his true blues groove, and an unrepentant desire for experimentation, Hendrix paved the way for every guitar god who dared follow him, while maintaining a certain degree of prowess that has yet to be met. While they're may be more technically talented shredders out there nowadays, none come close to playing with the style and grace of the late, great Jimi Hendrix. As far as the album is concerned, songs like the relentless Manic Depression, the all-time greatest cover of Hey Joe ever, the blues knockout Red House, to one of rock's quintessential blues jams Foxy Lady, this album is chock full of some of the best rock songs from the 1960s. Flawlessly executed, and mixed and produced with a raw, live sound, featuring tremendous instrumental contributions from their bassist, Noel Redding, and from one of the best rock drummers ever, Mitch Mitchell, Are You Experienced is an absolute jam fest. A great album anyway you slice it, with energy pulsing through each track, even the slower-paced ones. Jimi was the best, and he'd only get better from here. A classic.

Quite possibly the best psychedelic rock ever put to wax. Bold, innovative, virtuosic, fun, trippy, rockin' perfection.

So this has easily three of the most powerful and potent Hendrix songs. Not only that, but it is the debut! Fucking nuts.

He really is one of the greatest guitarists. This album can’t be overrated.

Another amazing debut album. Never really thought about it much before but as distinctive as Jimi's voice was, it wasn't really that great. He was a guitarist, first and foremost. But he made it work and really crushed this album.

Fantastic from start to finish

I was 7 when this came out, but I rarely heard any of his songs for another 10 years. What an absolute barnstormer this is now, let alone 55 years ago. All killer, no filler, funky, rocking, guitar pyrotechnics. It has it all. 55 stars.

Incredible album. Even the weaker songs are good. Love the guitar tones and production of the album.

Best three piece in the world possibly. BUT not the greatest songwriter by a country mile. Jimi should have just covered songs for his short life. These just don’t stand the test of time lyrically. As instrumentals they are brilliant. Cover art : Jimi asked for the original cover to be changed to this for US release. Don’t love it but it captures the era and movement and probably the state of his mind at times.

Jimi's talent is staggering, I'm taken aback every time I listen. This album is stacked with excellent songs. "Manic Depression" and "Hey Joe" are a couple of my all time favorites.

My favorite Hendrix album and quite possibly the greatest debut in rock history. Absolutely bursting with creative energy. Brought a potent heaviness and deep soulfulness to the Summer of Love. I only wish he would have lived longer so he could have continued to bend genres until the lines disappeared. Forever in awe of the way he rewrote the book on electric guitar. He plays so brilliantly but never comes across as overly technical or flashy because his playing was always in complete service to the songs. And you couldn't have asked for a better rhythm section! Such a muscular sound with just the right amount of psychedelic flourish in the production. Plays like a greatest hits. Five stars and a chef's kiss.

I hate single-side panned vocals. I'd rather have mono for Purple Haze than this overly stereo version. Other tracks are better. But ya, this is good Jimi Hendrix, what else is there to say?

Already listened

This is a fantastic album right here! It is absolutely crazy to think that this is a debut album as it is half filled with legendary classic songs known by most ('Purple Haze', 'The Wind Cries Mary', 'Fire', 'Hey Joe', and 'Foxy Lady' are all rock staples and will continue to be for many years). Beyond these tracks, every other song had something unique to offer and featured some great instrumentals (especially the well-regarded guitar work). There were lots of awesome moments that stood out to me throughout the listen: cool stereo mixing on 'May This Be Love' where the instruments keep switching sides, the insane breakdown at the end of 'I Don't Live Today', the cool backwards-like effects on the title track, etc. The feeling I had going through this record reminded me a lot of listening to the Ramones' debut album for the first time as I can just picture Jimi and his band ripping through these songs in a live setting and absolutely blowing everyone's minds. This album is much more intricate though so from a technical perspective, this is more impressive overall. The only negative I can think of is that 'Third Stone From the Sun' lost me a bit due to its length, but I am willing to bet that it would grow on me through subsequent listens. Overall, this is one of those albums that no doubt earns a spot on this list and that I will probably revisit again in the near future. 4.5/5.

I mean, come on. Everything about this album is perfect, from the first mind blowing riffs right down to that cover art. I can't even imagine what it was like hearing this album fresh in 1967. Jimi's still years ahead of the rest of us, over 50 years later. It's alright...

Debut from Jimi Hendrix: it has some of the classic Hendrix songs but I prefer Electric Lady Land. This is quintessential psychedelic rock but I am not that fuzzed, also there's quite a few fillers on the album and I would likely be more excited if it was more clear cut.

Essential Jimi Hendrix. A lot of his best songs are here on this album. My first 5/5.

Easy 5. There aren’t enough superlatives to describe how great this record is. Hard rock, psychedelic, blues, catchy pop hooks, etc etc etc all with Hendrix’s distinctive voice and guitar defining a new direction of rock music.

confusing as shit this, should i have listened to the UK release or should i have listened to the US release? the hendrix estate are also shit hot at getting things taken off yootoob, which is my preferred listening platform so that was muddled as fook with all sorts of random live versions. most confusing of all is why the american version felt it necessary to put an E in the word Foxy (foxey). the 60s were wild. anyway music, i had in my head that this was a rubbish album from some sort of previous listen years ago. i was wrong, this is very good. Maybe i was listening to the wrong release and one is better than the other. I'm no longer in my stoner rock days, as i aint got time for that shit, but i am now in my i wish i was better at guitar days so hendrix genuinely does melt my mind.

Hendrix first album one of the greatest. Can listen to it over and over again. Not a bad song on it.

This is the debut album from Jimi Hendrix and his bandmates. It was immediately successful, and is regarded as the greatest album debut in rock music history. Hendrix established a new method of rock and psychedelic music with his genius songwriting and talented guitar playing. Psychedelic rock was at its height when Jimi Hendrix was creating music like this. He was taken from this life far too soon, but his amazing work lives on with albums like this one. Everyone under the sun needs to listen to this album at least once. But just once won't be enough.

Classic rock is classic, but glory be some albums are nitro fuel to the global music engine. Case in point.

Great classic rock album. Peppered with absolute iconic songs that defined that era of rock. I also enjoyed a few of the lesser known songs, as they felt a bit more like a jam session than a fully produced song.

This album is rad. Lots of classic Hendrix hits. I know lots of modern players give Hendrix flack for not being the most precise guitar player, but I love his playing style on this record. There was a time when I was a bit burned out on most of these tracks, but listening now after having not listened in several years they don't seem played out and I really enjoyed the whole album.

Yeah this rules obviously. The guitar playing is dirty and the production is still very interesting with great use of stereo space especially on the wonderfully psychedelic Third Stone From The Sun. Not much else to say, a classic for a reason.

What is there to say, this is as good as it gets, and Hendrix earned his GOAT status for obvious reasons. I don’t love the slower blusey stuff as much, but even some of the “lighter” songs still kill, like “The Wind Cries Mary”. This better join Pink Floyd in the 4+ club. An A

One of the most iconic rock albums of all time, the medium of electric guitar is probably nowhere near the same if this album is not made. The popular songs, Purple Haze, Fire, Hey Joe, Foxy Lady etc. are all great, plus songs like Manic Depression or I Don't Live Today are great deeper cuts.

Jimi, Mitch, and Noel were simply ahead of their time with this one. Innovative guitar playing, incredible drumming, expert songcraft, period-perfect production that holds up to this day – this record has it all. 5

Fire Risk the stick, bang the drums, pour up the stage and release the phoenix. Effect Hendrix, is when in this particular year (1967), music in general were meeting new ground and fortunately this become one of the most remarkable periods in music history. Despite the fact that Jimi and his Left-handed White Stratocaster changed the way of how to play this instrument, the band itself worked so great together without so much effort, acting like naturally. At first point that they place in their query upon the listeners, proving that answers to "if you have tried" something, no words needed, only real action. A

Obviously there is truly some remarkable guitar work to be found here. That's Jimi's strength and it is mighty. That's not quite enough to get this album a 5 star from me though. Jimi isn't a bad singer, but he's nothing special. He certainly doesn't hurt anything with his vocals but nothing is really elevated either. There's also a few songs that aren't really that good. Third Stone From Earth grated on my nerves. This would be a 5 star album for influence and guitar work. Unfortunately factoring in some grievances and nitpicks I have to max it out at 4. I'm sure this has enough 5's that no one will be too upset.

A few stone-cold classics, lots of filler

I haven't listened to this in a long time. Jimi became a t-shirt in the 90s, along with Morrison and some other folks, and it sort of felt cliche to be into Jimi Hendrix. But jesus, listening to this - his playing can't be overhyped. And add to that his vocal performance which just makes you believe everything that comes out of his mouth. Song for song this is one of the best albums ever made. It's practically a greatest hits collection. Except for that last song. Woof.

This, to the younger version of me, was the entrepot to a world of music I couldn't even conceive of existing. Simply, I'd never heard guitar like this. 'Foxy Lady' has probably enjoyed the longest afterlife - and it is a priapic blooter of gigantic proportions - but as I've got older, it's the more subtle tracks that have revealed their charms to me. That outro solo to 'May This Be Love' is one of the most lyrical guitar parts I've ever heard. Magic stuff.

First, if you took guitar lessons as a young teen and didn't learn "Take Five" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet did you even take lessons at all?? I can still whittle my way around that melody on the ol' jingle axe. Great stuff. And connected to the Hendrix record via the exact same guitar teacher! My favorite song of the bunch is "May This Be Love." That was on the soundtrack for the movie Singles, no? Regardless, I remember hearing it in the mid-90s as I was getting into things like Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins and realizing that Hendrix had more in common with alternative music than with the Doobie Bros. This shit is timeless in an earned way. I can still listen to "Hey Joe" and actively enjoy it. Which is nuts. Also, I mean damn... that rhythm section could straight kill an entire marching band.

quick, snappy, fun. Hey Joe is a fucking anthem and this is the (2nd) best version. Jimi's got a great set of pipes on him aside from his obvious talent on the guitar.

The 1968 Bob Gibson season of albums. Even in the so-called "Year Of The Pitcher", Gibson having an ERA of 1.12 is just insane. So are 28 complete games and 13 shutouts. It's similar to an original album that contains Purple Haze, Hey Joe, May This Be Love, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, however you want to spell Foxey Lady, and of course, the title song. There will never be another Bob Gibson. And there's never been anyone like Jimi Hendrix.

Dude has multiple 5 star albums. Wish he stayed around, could blessed us with even more.

Not sure where to start. Jimi is one of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. Shear guitar greatness. Sad for such a short life. This was his debut album. Crazy right. There are 4+ songs that are all time greats. This group defined what a power trio was in the late 60's. I love his voice on Wind cries Mary. A ballad mixed in with great guitar solos. I'm a guitar fan so I love this album. Only complaint is some of his solo's are so crazy it becomes noise in parts. Overall great music. I have not listened in years. I will play more often for sure. Gotta love ..move over....let Jimi take over.

I've always thought of this as 'the singles' but overall the third best Jimi Hendrix Experience album. (The JHE is always the argument I use for why Crowded House aren't an Australian band. Although I'm more than happy for JHE to be considered a British band, given 2/3 of the band were English, they made their name in the UK and the first two albums were recorded in London, even if 'the talent' was American).

Close listening is worth it. Mind you, so is being off your face on acid.

I haven’t listened to this in full for a while. It’s genius at work already despite being a debut. Electric Lady land is more a complex record, this one more commercial. The Wind Cries Mary is a work of art.

Hendrix was a talent beyond the hype. Amazing lyrics, hit the pop, and brought us to new places that still haven't been tapped today.

5.0 + Incredible. This one's arguably the most radio friendly of Hendrix's three great albums. Some of his explosive studio theatrics are evident on \"Third Stone From the Sun\" that sounds like soundtrack to a pulp sci-fi novel. But, really, these are well-crafted pop songs with exceptional guitar work, probably the best committed to record. So many radio mainstays here: \"Purple Haze\", \"Manic Depression\", “Hey Joe\" and \"Fire\" to name just a few.

This album sounds so great, and it is timeless. I still hear Jimi Hendrix's influence in all kinds of modern rock music. He was a genius, no doubt. Third Stone from the Sun is weird. Jimi was super cool though. Watching him perform is amazing, and I can only imagine how many more awesome performances he had left! This album receives a 5 solely based on the revolutionary guitar.

Good guitar sounds

An undisputed essential in rock history. In many ways, this is not only Hendrix at his best, but 60s rock at its most far out, psychedelia at its peak, the electric guitar at its most expressive. It's blues, soul, R&B, psychedelia and pop all crammed into a 40 minute package, and I had so much fun hearing it again for the first time in years. I've gone between the different track listings of the UK and US versions when listening to this album (US adds three singles, including the iconic "Purple Haze", but removes "Remember", "Can You See Me" and "Red House"). For me, the US version wins out on a song-by-song basis, but the UK is structured more comfortably as an album, with more ebb and flow between the hard-edged rock and the lush ballads. As far as individual tracks, they're all winners, though I'd single out the instrumental "Third Stone From The Sun" as a blissful freak-out, full of guitar effects, feedback and intricate drum patterns, held together by a hypnotic three note bassline. The main guitar riff in this track, vibrato and all, is one of my favourite Hendrix moments on the record. "Are You Experienced" is another classic, all hinged around one chord, intoxicating marching snare beat and the insistent one-note piano refrain solidifies the band as a force to go down in history. "Red House" is the most forgettable track for me, leaning too far into a standard mid-tempo blues than the other songs on offer. There's little else I can add to the heaps of praise already given to this album, other than: Hendrix's voice suits the songs beautifully- it's bluesy husk is perfect and underrated. Noel Redding's bassline in "Fire" is exceptional. The ballads on offer are sublime and deserve as much credit as the rockers: "The Wind Cries Mary", "Remember" and "May This Be Love" all have beautiful melodies that cascade around the guitar lines. So it's a real classic and essential listening for rock music fans. Some of the techniques used might be dated now (trippy stereo panning, backmasking, wah pedals) but they only serve to capture the Jimi Hendrix Experience as true pioneers in 1967, riding the wave that would ultimately be too large even for them.

Great album, falls just short of a masterpiece to me. Amazing the sounds that Hendrix could get out of his guitar.

I liked this one a lot less than the other two Jimi Hendrix albums we've had. It felt a bit too chaotic and not entirely fleshed out to me. Just not really convincing.

Not fair reading albums you loved before this list

I reviewed the North American edition of Are You Experienced, because this is the version of the album that I have listened to before. I easily recognized and remembered 8 of the 11 tracks from the titles alone. I may have had a copy of this album on cassette, but I can't remember for sure. Maybe my brother had a copy. This was a difficult album to try and find studio versions of each track for review. The tracks that I enjoyed the most were lesser known tracks - probably because I haven't heard them so often, but also because they are good tracks: "3rd Stone from the Sun" and "Love or Confusion". "Are You Experienced?" and "The Wind Cries Mary" are favorites too, but probably got lower scores from me because I've heard them so many times. This is a debut album that is worth listening to. It would be an easy choice to play the album again.

It's nice, although I prefer the other Hendrix album we had, couldn't get into this one as much

'Foxey Lady' parte subito con molta carica, soprattutto sulla chitarra. Graffiante direi. 'Manic Depression' è tutt'altro rispetto al titolo, psichedelica. 'Red House' non mi ha colpito particolarmente, al contrario di 'Can You See Me', gli effetti in stereo sono pazzeschi. Anche 'Love or Confusion' aggiunge un senso di urgenza all'ascolto di altre canzoni di questo album, vorresti che finisse subito e che durasse per sempre. Fino a 'Fire', compresa, si perde un po' dell'intensità avvertita precedentemente, anche se quest'ultima non è male. '3rd Stone from the Sun' è un'esperienza a parte (che necessita qualche forma di allucinogeno). E Jimi ce lo chiede nella canzone successiva, se abbiamo preso qualcosa che ci permetta di "sperimentare". L'album nella prima versione uscita in UK, secondo me sta tra il 4 e il 5, perché nella seconda parte perde un po' di mordente. D'altro canto qualsiasi cosa includa 'Purple Haze' guadagna almeno 2 punti. Altro 6 su 5. 'The Wind Cries Mary' basterebbe, insieme a 'Purple Haze' a farmi dare il massimo dei voti a qualsiasi cosa. Trovo molto bella anche 'Highway Chile', molto più vicina a sonorità Hard Rock e "Santanesche".

A smorgasbord of mega choons: Purple Haze, The Wind Cries Mary, Fire, and (my personal favourite) Hey Joe. Some definite filler, especially if you include the bonus tracks, but there are extra points for this album's undoubted influence on the history of guitar music. 4/4.5 - that sort of thing.

A debut album by guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, 'Are You Experienced' is a revered hard rock record that some label quintessential. Hendrix's guitar ability can be considered to be unparalleled and unmatched - in 'Are You Experienced', his trademark playstyle of accentuated slide notes over thumb-pressed bass notes exemplify his excellence in instrument exploration. A fantastic album riddled with the likes of 'Purple Haze', with mighty impactful arrangements and impeccable musicality - this impact belongs not only in the 20th century, as even today Hendrix's inventiveness shines through the playstyles of other great guitarists.

One of my favorite albums ever. Jimi just gets it

The extended album with the first two singles and b-sides is superior. What's so special about Jimi is that his guitar playing still sounds extraordinary even now after guitar music has absorbed, copied and taken inspiration from what he did in the 60s. Another exceptional aspect to Jimi is his singing phrasing and vocal timing. I think he has a natural ability much like Sinatra's phrasing. It's very difficult to do a good mimic. What a talent. Great album - and it's a debut! Even the less well known songs are pretty good, albeit not legendary and so familiar.

We can all agree Purple Haze is canon, right? I realise yesterday I have Clapton and Bluesbreakers a proper coat down, but it's only because things like this exist. Then the anarchic glorious mess of Manic Depression, then Hey Joe. This is what blues rock SHOULD sound like. Exciting, thrilling, joyous. Love of confusion shows Hendrix's main talent. While other guitarists were still just happy to have electric guitars, and maybe distorting them a bit, he wants to experiment with every noise it can make, playing around with the pick up switches and all sorts to see what happens. May this be love is less exciting than the killer opening, but you almost need a break after that opening. I don't live today shows (though other earlier tracks have too) that this experimentation goes for the drummer as well (Chas Channing?) With some weird jagged rhythms making it a great bit of jazz/psych craziness. The Wind Cries Mary is just a beautiful song. One of the best ballads ever written. Then Fire which is pure fun. It's a great album. You can even forgive the overlong trad blues of Red House at the end, it almost feels like he's saying 'Yep, I can do this too!'.

Jimi Hendrix is glaringly the greatest, most charismatic, most talented artist of the 60s, and here we have his debut. In truth, this is not so much structured as an album but rather as an assemblage of Hendrix songs, showcasing what voodoo mojo geetar freakoutery he could do. But what a showcase! Virtually every moment and every aspect stuns the listener. Since everyone knows Hendrix's guitar virtuosity (he was quite good, apparently), I shall instead talk about his voice. Hendrix himself was rather disparaging about his voice, and was very self-conscious about it. To every other listener, Hendrix's dismay is baffling. His voice is somehow warm and seductive yet simultaneously masculine and fiery. Another aspect perhaps overlooked, though to a lesser extent, is the range of styles Hendrix adopts and mutates into his own; the rock, ballad, blues, raga, soul, R&B and psychedelia displayed here all bend towards Hendrix's star, a process sustained in his later albums. Hendrix had talents far beyond the guitar, and this album is proof. Why aren't you listening to this now?

Don't really like the bluesy tuneless vocals. I like the grungy tones being produced, but some of the weirder experimentation goes on too long.

Hendrix is a legend, and hard to offer any original commentary on. I haven't ever owned his albums, and I don't really put Hendrix on and let it roll as much as pick out iconic songs and performances.

I hadn’t sat and listened to this all the way through since I was a teenager, I think I like it even more now. With a Hendrix album you’re obviously gonna focus on the guitar performance , but the drumming on this thing is also fucking crazy 9/10

Legendary collection of great songs!

I originally thought this was a greatest hits album when I was young, as 10 of the original 12 tracks were regular airplay on the radio. Great album, and you can tell thousands of artists since have been influenced or downright copied Joni’s style. Compare this to only musi that had been released at the time, and it’s significance really sets in.

Ce que j'ai reproché au précédent album de Jimi à propos de l'emplacement de ses "tubes" dans la chronologie du projet n'est pas tombé dans l'oreille d'un sourd, et c'est une bonne chose. Vous savez probablement que j'ai fêté la semaine dernière le premier anniversaire du jour où je me suis fait licencier de mon premier cabinet d'avocats. Je vous dois la vérité sur cet épisode. Alors que je m'y rendis un matin avec le même entrain qu'habituellement, ma tutrice me convoqua dans son bureau. "Ferme la porte" me dit-elle une fois que j'eus franchi celle-ci. Je m'assis en face d'elle et c'est alors qu'elle débuta son laïus truffé de reproches : - Robserpillère, cela fait maintenant trois semaines que tu travailles chez nous et plusieurs de tes agissements nous poussent à nous interroger sur ta présence ici. - Quoi ?! - Nous t'avons plusieurs fois demandé de décrocher les posters de Hugh Masekela que tu as fixés sur les murs de la salle de réunion, tu n'en as pas tenu compte. - Mais hein ?! - Vendredi dernier, alors que j'étais en rendez-vous avec un client très important, tu as allumé ton enceinte et diffusé l'album O.G. Original Gangster d'Ice T dans le couloir. C'était extrêmement inapproprié. - Ta gueule ?! - De plus, tu as pris pour habitude de débrancher l'aspirateur de notre femme de ménage car cela t'empêche apapremment d'écouter ton album du jour. Ce comportement est inacceptable. - Pardon ?! - Tu es viré, Robgazinière... Voilà, vous savez tout désormais.

Vous n'êtes pas sans savoir que je possède 3 générateurs pirates en plus du générateur des 1001, afin d'étendre au maximum ma culture musicale. Aujourd'hui, robpenitencière, qui avait déjà réussit le tour de force de s'incruster dans mon aventure des 1001, a réussi à dénicher le lien menant à mon gigantesque fichier Excel proposant ces 3 générateurs clandestins. A peine arrivé, il tente déjà de remodeler le fichier selon ses préférences, alors même que la communauté pirate vivait jusqu'alors dans une parfaite harmonie musicale. Il détruit les classements des uns et les commentaires des autres, ne laissant que fumée et pleurs sur son passage. La communauté des générateurs clandestins prépare une réponse à cette intrusion, je vous tiendrai au courant dans une prochaine review des avancées de la rebellion.

An absolutely legendary experience from the moment you punch play and get hit with that iconic opening riff of "Purple Haze" all the way to the closing solo of "Red House." There are few albums as stuffed with hits as "Are You Experienced" is. Every track is perfect, every lick is tasty, every song leaves you wanting more. What a beast of an album. What a legend of a musician.

No hay mucho que decir excepto que al escuchar el disco completo me agrada mucho más que aquel segundo disco que nos había tocado primero. Tiene más canciones no solo que conocía sino que en su conjunto me agradaron más. El estilo es ya conocido, la virtuosidad no se discute y no se puede decir mucho más aparte de que "suena a Hendrix" excepto que es un conjunto de canciones que me gustan más que las otras que nos tocaron antes.

Un disco muy entretenido. Al principio pensé en cortarle en la versión normal en lugar de echarme la extendida que ofrece Apple, pero la verdad es que ni noté que se siguió y vinieron más y más rolas que valen la pena. Lo que me falta para subirlo a cinco estrellas es un poco de balance hacia otros aspectos, pues obviamente está totalmente cargado al lucimiento de Jimi, pero la neta es que su voz es la que no me termina de convencer.

I can't really say anything new about Hendrix's guitar playing and how important and influential it was. This album is an inarguable inclusion in this book. That said, it's clearly a 60s album from the aggressive abuse of stereo panning throughout.

Purple haze - one of my favourite songs. This is a great album

This debut album of the guitar god is an unbelievable treasure. It is full of classic rock songs ("Foxy Lady", "Manic Depression", "Red House", "I Don't Live Today", "May This Be Love", "Fire", "3rd Stone from the Sun", "Are You Experienced") and CD / USA reissues also contain the hit singles "Hey Joe" and "Purple Haze".

A downright extraordinary album. Jimi was insanely creative and talented, it's incredible!!

On comprend pourquoi c'est un album culte. Du très bon rock psychédélique avec des touches de blues très présentes. Parfait pour travailler ou chiller avec une couple de bière et/ou un joint.

Also alle Studioalben von Hendrix in dieser Liste. Völlig ok, kann man nicht genug hören.

Like, I feel like I could have just listened to 5 songs over and over for an hour and I would not have noticed anything different to this.
