Are You Experienced

Solid album. No real standouts for me, honestly. Just solid play throughout. Guitar, drums, and bass all slap. They all get their time to shine which I like. I honestly expected to like this a bit more, especially because I listened during a run where I can focus a bit more.

Static and uncontrolled elements lead to an OK rating.

This album came pretty soon after the previous one i rated, but that being said this album was also pretty good. I actually think Electric Ladyland was better, the songs seemed to have a bit more life to them. Just listening to him play guitar is amazing and so nice to hear though no matter what song it is.

Enjoyable album. Felt very much like the epitome of 70's psychedelic guitar. Really enjoyed the sound of the solos, but not a huge fan of the vocals.

I love Jimi. Big but. I prefer Electric Ladyland. I feel like I enjoy listening to his songs in isolation and I can't take a full album at once. Probably a light 6/10

Day 5 of 1001 Albums You Need to Hear Before You Die: Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix I can't say I've ever really listened properly to Jimi so this was a new experience for me. Very psychedelic feel which for me can go one of two ways. A passionate, powerful and energised album with insane guitar work. However, this is no real flow to the album, the songs have just been shoved together. I wish the vocals were a bit louder and the songs a little less repetitive. Favourite Songs - Hey Joe, May This Be Love, Fire, Foxey Lady

Huge fan of jimi Hendrix - but not sure I love all of this album

Man, I wanna start off by saying there is absolutely nothing wrong with this album. It's technically great. His guitar playing is otherworldly sometimes and his contributions to music are unquestionable. This just isn't my jam. I'd not turn any of it off, but I wouldn't intentionally go and put it on either.

Love the guitar & instrumentation- I get the hype behind it from an instrumental perspective. Jimi as a singer just doesn't do a ton for me. Highlights: Purple Haze, Hey Joe, May This Be Love

-um jimi hendrix and that guitar are CRAZY -purple haze is a good song i see why this album is a HUGE deal -and a guitar solo is gonna hit for me every time -favorites: love and confusion -the guitar is really the star of this album -the lyrics aren’t super my thing -jimi hendrix is very much a legend, but this album itself personally is getting a 3 from me

Far be it from me to ever besmirch the great name of Jimi Hendrix. His highs are extremely high here, but I snoozed through a lot of the album. "Hey Joe" and "The Wind Cries Mary" are all-timers, but I didn't really connect with anything beyond the songs everybody knows. I'd love to give it an extra star, but there's just too much there that doesn't need to be there.

This album was really repetitive but there is no doubt that Jimi Hendrix is amazing at guitar

All love for Jimi and this is as clear an expression for the importance of listening context as any, but I didn't vibe with this one today. It was very much on in the background I must admit, but in any sense I find it hard to really engage with this style and this one felt extra jammy. All the skill on show and I know this is just taste, so I'm going middle of the road. Fave track: Manic Depression

Second Hendrix album I’ve had after ‘Axis: Bold As Love’, and I must say I liked that better than this. It just feels more complete and better put together in a way that ‘Are You Experienced’ doesn’t, good as a large part of it is. Meanwhile Right Said Fred says Hi.

The common factor among Hendrix's releases is how effortless all of them sound, as if this music spontaneously emerged from the vacuum and is now winding its way into your ears. It's easy to forget just how much of himself Jimi is giving to guitar and how insanely difficult this style of fast but lyrical playing can be. Not every track on this LP specifically shines with individual personality like some of the other Hendrix albums, but the overall ebb and flow from lick to lick is enough to carry the LP a good deal. Always excited to see one of these come up in the project, as it means a guaranteed good listen and (usually) good day.

Good album, enjoyable

This feels very long. But not in good way. There are so many hits here it's impossible to deny this records impact. And I like a lot of it. But it's just sooooo long.

Jimi is a good fund frolic through the era of psychedelic substances. I liked the craziness of Third Stone From The Sun.

Jimi Hendrix was a good guitar and his work in this album is nice.

Enjoyed this more than Electric Ladyland for sure. Purple Haze and Fire are always good. Seemed to have more direction or less fat or something.

Yes, he tore up the rule book, yes he was the finest guitarist of his (and possibly any) generation, yes he wrote some banging tunes, but come on, by any measure this is not a truly great album. It's a remarkable debut, but especially in it's original UK release track listing it's missing the most banging tunes which had already been put out as scouting singles. No Hey Joe, no Wind Cries Mary and whilst the album has some magnificent raw guitar riffs, there's really, when you drill down into it, a great deal of filla. This doesn't flow as an album and it's not wall to wall bangers. Sorry. It's bang average, especially by Jimi's standards.

This is one I grew up with on vinyl and eventually bought my own copy on vinyl. It is a very important and solid album. The Wind Cries Mary is my personal favorite as it's a little more harmonious than some of the others. That's my favorite Jimi.. The man who gives us his luxurious voice accompanied by groovy guitars. I resonate more with this Jimi than the screaming guitars and feedback or the quickfire pace of Manic Depression or Third Stone from the Sun. I once had a very serious head-on collision to Watchtower and to be honest even though I have nothing against it, I really haven't listened too much to his music since that time-- at 15. Just because it brings back that horrific crash.

I know this is controversial but I’ve never been a Hendrix fan. I’m not super into the 60s psychedelic sounds generally. But I can appreciate his artistry and skill.

'SCUSE ME WHILE I KISS THIS GUY! WOOOO Oh and there's 10 more songs on this album that I have almost no recollection of. "Third Stone From The Sun" had a kick-ass instrumental, I'll give it that. I like Jimi Hendrix when we fully embraces that he's the best guitar player in history and goes full ham (so the entirety of Electric Ladyland). This album mostly seemed kind of empty. Probably just me.

Well, what an a incredible album, but still one that I don't especially enjoy. However, the non-hit, non-bluesy ones (it should be established now I how feel about the blues sound) were really cool, especially Are You Experienced. I can see why Jimi is a big deal. But I'm good.

I much prefer Electric Ladyland instead. There were more familiar tracks in this album but it's alright. Maybe it'll grow on me? Not sure though.

I can now say that I am indeed Experienced. Hendrix's debut is a classic for a reason. Melding fusions of R&B, Jazz, and a bit of Blues Rock and creates a wholly new style of psychedelic & harder rock. Guitar work throughout is obviously top notch and can't be dismissed, as anything but genius. Best: Purple Haze; Foxy Lady Worst: Third Stone From The Sun 3.5 Stars

Best three piece in the world possibly. BUT not the greatest songwriter by a country mile. Jimi should have just covered songs for his short life. These just don’t stand the test of time lyrically. As instrumentals they are brilliant. Cover art : Jimi asked for the original cover to be changed to this for US release. Don’t love it but it captures the era and movement and probably the state of his mind at times.

I know this is a blind spot but I just don’t get much out of listening to Hendrix at all.

It's alright...

Debut from Jimi Hendrix: it has some of the classic Hendrix songs but I prefer Electric Lady Land. This is quintessential psychedelic rock but I am not that fuzzed, also there's quite a few fillers on the album and I would likely be more excited if it was more clear cut.

Lyssnade på den amerikanska utgåvan. Coolt och banbrytande! Självklart är Hendrix gitarrspelande och sång utomordentligt, med förvånades även över hur mycket jag uppskattade Noel Reddings bas och Mitch Mitchells trummor. Tillsammans en väldigt bra coherent experience. Första och sista låtarna (US), Purple Haze och Are You Experienced?, känns som de mest klassiska, och det var även de som jag hade hört innan. Fenomenala båda två. Hey Joe har härligast melodi. Gillar även The Wind Cries Mary. Third Stone from the Sun är spacead och spännande. Tyvärr lite för många låtar på främst A-sidan som inte blir bättre än okej. 3.5/5 Bästa låt: Hey Joe.

I've never really listened to Hendrix beyond what you hear in movies/pop culture/the few songs that get radio airtime. Almost every track feels like it's about 4 hours long, some interesting musical progression, but largely it feels like a product of its time, maybe it's the Seinfeld effect in that I've heard so much of what Hendrix influenced, that this now doesn't fit where it should in the history of rock/music. I can understand the love people have for this, but maybe it's beyond my smooth monkey brain.

This album is like Tea; it's not my cup of it, but I understand why people like it. I'm not a personal fan of the nitty gritty guitar noises, but I know some do. Favorite track: Stone Free

Okay so, the thing is, I find it hard to understand the appeal of guitar solos, I would like to be able to enjoy them but I just feel nothing when I hear one. Do other people feel something or is it more about abstractly appreciating the skill of the guitar player? I know intellectually that Hendrix was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, and listening to it I can hear it's really fast and complex and would take a very very long time to get the hang of -but it doesn't communicate anything to me when i'm listening to it. Maybe the reason I don't respond in the way that other people do is because I don't play guitar and I'm not really musical. Would like to know other people's thoughts on this.

Can an album be too well loved? No doubt that the songs are fantastic but when I listen to them I can just hear echoes of guitar enthusiasts singing along with every riff and that spoils it for me.

Couple of classics but a number of 70s psychedelic filler.

Que buena guitarra, me la baja que se escuche con ese filtro antiguo, es del 67 y para esa epoca era una locura, pero no me termina de gustar, tampoco me gusta mucho el estilo.

¡Un clásico! Aunque no es un disco para mi, las dos canciones que me gustan, me gustan mucho, como lo es Purple Haze o Hey Joe. Aún así, se me hizo largo de escuchar, no es tanto mi estilo.

"Electric Ladyland" liegt mir mehr, wirkt mehr wie aus einem Guss.

This time i will say that i did not connect with him, not really into this kinda music. I think i am pretty tired too. I loved the instruments in this album though so thats my 2 stars.

- don't think i liked this album as a whole which is a bummer because i really did think i would. What are the odds I get this album, I had a presentation on artist in 1967 making music for the time and Jimi hendrix was on of those artists. I did really like some of the songs as singles tho.

With the exception of Purple Haze, this album felt like a long wash of one feeling and one big guitar riff. I'm not the biggest fan, and I didn't feel like it earned the length. 4/10

2 Niks voor mij

Second Jimi album. It's been a long, long time since I made the historic blunder of listening to Electric Ladyland with one charged earbud. I, fortunately, now have headphones which don't rely on a phony Bluetooth connection, so I can listen to this album with full confidence knowing that I won't hear it in one ear. It's been a while since my previous Jimi album, though I haven't been entirely alone. I've had two Stevie Wonder albums within the past month. I kind of lump the two artists together due to them both having a psychedelic, experimental sound. I like to think I'm prepared for this return. What the hell is going on with this track listing? The English and American issues are vastly different from one another for some reason. Anyways, this rough rock sound doesn't really do much for me. I've always had the image that Hendrix was considered and precise given his standing as one of the best guitarists ever, though I'm starting to to doubt that. In all fairness, it is his debut album and one from the 60s at that, so I can cut some slack. "Manic Depression" was pretty good, though the rest of the album didn't hook me. Book time. "One of the greatest debuts ever". That's about it. I mean, I suppose you don't need much more than that. I cosign this inclusion.

He's obviously a legend and all, can't dispute that, but I struggle to listen to him for too long without finding it annoying. A couple of tracks here are fine, a whole album is too much for me.

Bester, aber hör ich nicht

Unfortunately, I am not a Jimi Hendrix fan, so this did not hit a note with me.

I liked Hey Joe and The Wind Calls Mary. Hated Fire, Manic Depression and Third Stone from the Sun. I was surprised to find that I kind of liked the titular song. Stone Free featured a distracting cow bell. Aside from a mild appreciation of how much this album likely pushed artistic boundaries at the time, it didn’t move me. I feel like I have heard many of these sounds before, likely borrowed by other artists which speaks to it’s significance. This is likely the first time people heard music that was such a psychedelic experience, so I guess good for them. Good job! 👍

Another one where the historical significance is clear but it’s just not as good as what came later. The weak vocals are the biggest let down, but the jazzy drumming can get annoying too.

He is a great guitarist but his music is overrated.

Sam Hendrix. I like it better than Bold as Love but, still, not for me. I can see why it's good, though.

Another I was never a big fan of. All his material has sounded like it was missing something. I understand stereo versus mono, but still sounded off. More than likely, this is a preference for me, but this is comparable to my dislike of Zeppelin or Soundgarden.

More an album to vibe to than anything. I think probably the notable thing about this - cutting edge guitar playing - has been dulled by all the other playing we've heard since the 60s.

I know that I am in the minority, but I find Jimi Hendrix exhausting and boring. I can barely keep my mind from wandering through most of the songs. I don’t doubt that Hendrix was an absolute legend at guitar, but it doesn’t translate to making songs everyone enjoys.

While I realize that this was a 5 star album for some, it just wasn’t for me. But I at least made it through the album because the point of this journey is to have exposure to music I wouldn’t otherwise listen to. This was my first Jimi Hendrix and the only song I was vaguely familiar with was Purple Haze.

‘Are You Experienced’ put Jimi Hendrix on the map. Jimi Hendrix is a force of nature who single-handedly changed the way rock guitar is played. He experimented with stereo (admittedly creating a distant-sounding vocal, usually shoved fully to the left or right, an element which has bugged me since childhood). I’ve spent many days and nights rocking out to these tunes, trying and failing to play them, and for that, I understand why this album has such a high rating here. It’s beloved the world-over. When I started this album generator project, I unconsciously envisioned the albums I knew would have to be included: Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin IV, What’s Goin’ On, and of course, Are You Experienced. It seems like a milestone to have reached this album while listening through on this journey. One critic even compared this album to Joyce’s ‘Ulysses,’ and having read Ulysses multiple times, I can safely say that this guy’s wrong, but I see where he’s coming from. With all of these accolades, with tracks like Purple Haze, Foxey Lady, and The Wind Cries Mary, how can this album be anything but locked-in at a ‘god’ status? For many, I think this is probably an automatic five stars, and I dig that. But, when listening through this (literally facing the music), I realized that, beyond the mythology, I don’t really like listening to Jimi Hendrix so much. He’s raw energy, and I’m sure he would’ve been a force to see in real life, but the vibe is just so, I don’t know, not chill or something. I rarely put on more than one JH song at a time, if I put him on at all. His sonic language, influential as it was, is not my love language. The breathing weirdly in my ear, the turning the volume up and down at random intervals, the seeming constant feeling of being about to rush out of cohesion- it’s just all a little much. He has a place in history, and on some days, I might give this a three. But seeing how high the global rating is, I feel I have to do my part to be the hand of justice. I want to ask people to listen to this album and try to strip away the storied mythos. Try to strip away your knowledge of what it influenced. Do you still like it? If so, great. But, I said yes, I’d be lying to myself.

Purple haze is majestic, the rest of it is very mediocre.

Although a lot of great classics came from this album, it’s just not something I would choose to listen to.

Has not aged well for the modern audience. Wish there were more original songs.

I can say I’ve listened to a whole album of his now. Still just alright for me.

Found it more interesting but less enjoyable than his Electric Ladyland album. Kinda didn’t want him 2 weeks after the last one but that’s what happens haha

2 - Hendrix always delivers with his bigger tracks, what a way to start the album. Very well preformed album overall, especially compared to other albums from this era. I loose a lot from these old albums in their production. Something like I Don’t Live Today will never be anything but distracting and annoying for me. Also the spit between the instruments to different sides of your headphones, needs a better remaster or something… just personal gripes I guess. Third Stone From The Sun is wild… but I kinda dig sections of it. List of pretty decent tracks later in the album too, but nothing stood out.

Sounds pretty much like what I expected, with a couple of more psychadelic touches such as reverse echo here and there. I have never been very interested in Hendrix and this album did not change my mind.

Is this mind-bending for 1967? Yes, but I still find it easily the weakest of the three Jimi Hendrix Experience albums. It is fuzzy and destructive, but it's all really only a thin layer over pretty predictable blues rock, a craft Hendrix would come to nearly perfect less than a year after this release, and it leaves this one feeling plain. Even the best song from the period, Purple Haze, isn't even on the original release of this album, so there's just not a lot of reason to experience this cut from the Hendrix canon unless you're a completionist.

I heard good things about this album. I honestly didn't care for it. I saw it as mostly filler and couldn't really get behind any of the songs besides Foxey Lady (maybe). Big shrug for me.

I wanted to like this. Vocals weren’t doing much for me, guitar sounded technical and hard to play but not necessarily fun to listen to. Overall pretty meh, I get that it was probably historically important though. Favorite songs were: 1. Purple Haze 3. Hey Joe 4/10

This got so boring so quickly. Each song felt near indistinguishable from the last and the rambling guitar playing did not enamour me. Either a 2 or a 3 I’ll see how im feeling when it comes to rating

Ehhhh not my thing

Waterfall (May This Be Love) is the outlier here but my favorite is Fire. I have heard most of the songs and enjoyed the album.

I feel like this is the album that has been playing in every record store I've ever gone into. It's fine and I understand that it's a seminal work, it's just not my style.

I'm sorry, it's just not my thing. Jimi's later stuff is a lot more interesting to me, even if I can appreciate the influence of this stuff.

I'm sure it was impressive at the time but now- its boring. Kids can shred like this, and it hasn't stood the test of time.

This feels so much like blasphemy, rating it only 2 stars. Somehow I don't find this much accessible. Maybe I'll have to listen to it again someday. + Hey Joe (for the Flower Punk lyrics) + Stone Free + Purple Haze (for the importance of the JJBA franchise)

Absolutely amazing guitar player but just not my genre

A lot of songs start off with strong instrumentals, but they just repeat the same idea without going further. Solos are interesting. Vocals are very samey and they sound like they were recorded at a concert with the amount of "yeah baby!"s in it. Historically significant, but doubt Id listen to it ever again. Significant albums 12/25. Albums I liked 5/25. Albums I have added to my library 0/25. This one: significant, didnt like, didnt add.

apparently i already like two songs off this album, according to my spotify but i think that was when i was tryna be cool and cultured and i have to be honest, i don’t really care for it lol. but who knows, it might get better. and don’t get me wrong, it’s great music, but more for the influential catalyst it’s been and because of the ripples it made in its time. and i think this is the case for a lot of this kind of music. oh god i just finished work and checked to see how many songs left and it’s a lot and i’m just like… why. though there was 1 i genuinely liked, will check the name.

I listened to the hell out of this album my Sophomore or Junior year of highschool. Listening now, it’s solid, but that initial magic is lost. Crazy to think he was 24 or 25 recording this music. This is an iconic album but I don’t like it the way I used to. Maybe I’m tired of it, maybe I’ve mellowed out

Jimi's one tone voice and half-baked "heys" really don't inspire me. His guitar work is good enough; and the band occasionally breaks out of its locked basement of blues riffery, but not nearly often enough! Favorite track: 'The Wind Cries Mary'

Don't really like the bluesy tuneless vocals. I like the grungy tones being produced, but some of the weirder experimentation goes on too long.

Like, I feel like I could have just listened to 5 songs over and over for an hour and I would not have noticed anything different to this.
