Reviews (page 12 of 14)
I keep thinking of Rufus Wainwright while listening to this. Not a fan of "So Real," especially the insipid and repetitive lyrics and the section where the guitar imitates a weed whacker. It's one of the great renditions of Hallelujah, and I also liked "Forget Her." After listening to the whole album on a loop, I doubt that I'll revisit it, but I will listen to the two songs I like.
Not my jam but hey
Easy listening. Nice mix of R&B and rock.
I kind of liked the Hallelujah version. Rest was fine.
Great sound!
I think I just assumed this was all going to be ballads for the boys, but it’s very like the Manic’s rock opera style. An eye opener.
Nice album, I enjoyed it… But no highlight for me. Any I'm annoyed by "Hallelujah" this one is just too hyped and played to death.
Not really my kind of music but there's no denying that Jeff Buckley has a beautiful voice. His rendition of hallelujah is an all time classic.
It’s alright, not my jam
3/5
I hate his voice. Or at least his way of singing. Too unsteady. Doesn't sound like he's in control. The songs have good parts, but they're far fetched at times. Reminds me of early Radiohead. I'm not a big fan of theirs either. My review is very negative so far, but I appreciate the creativity. Favorite song: last goodbye.
It was ok, kinda melancholy, would need to be in the right mood
very forgettable
3.5/5
Enjoyed the first half of the album up until hallelujah. Seemed very talented, sad he passed so tragically.
Ok. Bit slow for me - a few good ones though. Come down music
Meh!
Good album. Hadn’t really listened to much other than Hallelujah before. Highlights were Last Goodbye, Lover, and Forget Her. I’m going to go with three stars, but this is the first album I’m ranking. Might be a four.
pleasant but nothing revolutionary
Bit strong this Jeff. Grace and Hallelujah were good, but he doesn't half over-emote. I think the album would have benefited as a piece of art from him calming right down. Still, pretty decent if only sporadically.
Listened to this before and sure I enjoyed it much more then I did this time.... Thought it felt a bit over the top. His singing style drones on and it gets pretty tiring over the whole album. I don't really dislike it, but probably not going back to it. I think Grace is the best track by far. Hmm. 2 feels very harsh but I've given 3 to things I've liked much better than this 2.5. sorry Jeffrey
Impressive style range! Theatrical, choral, and grungy at the same time. Definite 90s vibes like soundgarden and queens of the Stone Age. Incredible guitar skills. Emotional album.
Seemed to be good but I couldn’t get through the full thing and I have a pretty high level of patience for albums — could have just paired it with the wrong mood/environment
It was pretty nice, I didn't quite get all the hype but maybe I need to give it more listens
I like it a lil not a fav 6-7/10
Full disclosure, I have always resisted Jeff Buckley, it just sounds so whiney and emo for me. Whilst listening to the album, almost every track sounds like a lame, try hard version of a Radiohead song with pseudo Thom York vocals. Then I put the timelines together and realised that the Jeff cart came before the Radiohead cart! Mind blown!! I’m not saying that I have become a die hard Buckley fan, because I’m not, it just too whiney, miserable, emo, angst ridden for me to be into, but I have given him a three star review because, he MUST have influenced Radiohead, so for this he needs to be recognised. It is a shame that he died so young, it would have been interesting to see in what direction his next couple of albums went! I’m glad I listened to this whole album.
Liked it a lot. Not sure it's a repeat listen though.
It was a nice album. Would probably prefer Leonard Cohen though
It's fine. I also think his cover of Hallelujah is worse than Cohen's version.
Honestly, I gave this a serious try, and it didn't really grab me, though there were flashes here and there. I can't give it four stars. It's not bad but I expect something MORE for me to give it a better rating.
Mojo Pin So Real Hallelujah Eternal Life Forget Her
There were some tracks I liked, that were pretty rock n' roll, but others that were too slow for my liking. A solid 3 from me
I was only familiar with Jeff Buckley's cover of Hallelujah prior to listening to this album. The album was good but kind of all over the place in genre and tone, while at the same time, maintaining emotionally charged mood throughout. After listening to the album, I was surprised to read that this is considered by some to be the best album of all time. I did go back and listen to a handful of songs with more intent, but still don't get it. This is solid three-star album for me.
I used to like this but tbh it didnt age well
Imma call this genre “the opposite of edm.” Better album than I remember, wears out its welcome towards the end. Great songwriting and composition, just kinda wish it was performed in more unique ways? The 90’s singer-songwriter sound doesn’t always hit for me
Pretty good
A few stand out songs with an interesting, experimental-folk rock sound. Outside of that the album felt very hit and miss with no consistant style
ok
I liked a couple of songs off of his abum, honestly not really something I would go back to all the time, but wouldn’t skip 3/5
My expectations were low going into this, so I'm very pleasantly surprised. Favorite tracks: Hallelujah, Eternal Life
He sings
I've never listened to Jeff Buckley but I enjoyed it! I really liked his voice, especially when it was on the soft side. Very delicate and beautiful. There were some real interesting tracks with cool chord progressions. I'm not sure yet if and when I'll return to this record, but it was a good listen.
I only knew hallelujah and was quite surprise by the rest of the album. I still think that his untimely death contributed to his aura. Still it’s a decent album. 3 stars
nice voice, quite soft, bit gospel-y though, overall nice
Very distinctive voice. If ever there were a voice that could do "Hallelujah" well this one is it. Lilac Wine and Eternal life are standouts, Corpus Christi Carol sounds angelic - another good showcase of his voice. Album felt very uneven. For me the production kind of sounds dated, but is a very solid mix.
This album is ok. Jeff has an incredible voice and listening to it is a treat. It's very moody though, and I rarely seek the kind of melancholy this album emotes. Also the electric guitar often enters songs in a way I feel very jarring. Favorite track was hallelujah.
War nicht ganz so meins
His voice is notable, but I mostly didn't mind myself moved by it -- in particular, this version of "Hallelujah" doesn't touch the original for me. "Eternal Life" a standout.
Wasn’t my favorite voice by the songs were very uplifting and his story is very sad
Kinda warbly at times, kinda Bono at times, kinda kinda.
Cool, very cool, but a bit too 90s for my taste.
I can understand why it's so highly regarded and it definitely has flavours of music that has succeeded it showing its influence Probably won't listen again, wouldn't have been bothered if I didn't listen to it, but overall a pretty enjoyable album
Decent, some of the covers (Lilac Wine) were particularly lacking.
Incredible voice, clearly very influential for early Radiohead. Maybe the best cover of the LC tune Hallelujah. Some of the slower ballads are not really my thing though. Could use another 1-2 listens all the way through before forming a more solid opinion
Good album? Sure. Sad that it was his only one while alive? Absolutely. One of the best albums ever? Are you high?? It's actually an enjoyable listen, and he's a gifted songwriter and vocalist, but it doesn't quite live up to some of the hype. 3-1/2 stars but not quite worthy of rounding up.
Jeff can sing which puts him ahead a lot of the stuff you hear on this list, but the song writing is pretty tired for the most part.
More than Hallelujah plus more songs. Echoes of anthemic U2 and early Pearl Jam. Definite 90s production sensibilities though
90s rock some good some fine. If listen to other albums but also wouldn’t seek it out. 3/5
Wide variety which I liked. Sad it’s his only album
ok, not my thing. Couldn't find the full album
Some good, some not really my thing. 6/10
Peculiar. The production is lush; some of the instruments almost seem to glow in the mix. The songs and their arrangements aren't bad, with a few rising to superlative status. It's Buckley's voice that is a source of frustration. He was a great singer - and yet he persists with a weird, overbaked affect that sounds like Demis Roussos squeezing out a turd. Peculiar.
The cynic in me thinks this album would have never become the touchstone it is for so many people had Buckley not died at the age he did. I also recognize that's a pretty shitty thing to think, and also there's little point to that thought exercise. So, trying to judge the music just for what it is mostly reinforced what I already suspected about the album: "Last Goodbye" and "Hallelujah" are the clear standouts and nothing else really rises to that level for me. That said, I quite like "So Real," whether it sounds like Tears for Fears or not. I also kept simply thinking about how much the guy from Muse reeeeallly borrowed vocally from Buckley and how that's kinda icky.
One of those essential albums; I prefer the standard version released in Buckley's lifetime. His cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is the headlining track of course (and likely the canonical version of the song), but "Lover, You Should've Come Over" is my favorite. Undeniably a five star album, but I'll likely rate it a bit lower because it's not the type I reach for often.
Not my thing. There isn’t anything wrong with it, but I think it’s the over the top vocals that bother me. Hallelujah is, of course, amazing, but that has little to do with Buckley.
I get that Jeff Buckley has this air of mystique and intrigue and tragedy around him, and I also understand that this is supposedly an excellent album. Which I guess it is, but it is just not for me. I can't see myself ever really getting in to this or listening to it again, but yeah it's clearly good.
Hallelujah is amazing. The rest is mostly meh. Although Eternal Life also rocks.
Pretty good, hallelujah bangs
Solid album, I liked the dreamy sort of feel of the vocals and instrumentals. Favourite song Dream Brother.
Fine album, but the cover of Hallelujah loses a lot of its meaning by being too pretty (and inspiring the hordes of christian-themed covers of a very explicitly not christian song)
Nice, chill vibes
Was not bad....
Recognized the Hallelujah song.
Hallelujah is very good, but almost everything else doesn't really excite me. And that's a cover.. well, that's still good, makes a star of his own
Good but sad, interestingly it gets more optimistic and brighter by the end. Like the flow of any or most breakups 3/4
I should listen to this album more often. It's really good but somehow keeps me at arms length. This time I'm adding it to my playlist. 3.5 stars
I dunno it's pretty good but didn't wow me. His voice carries a fair few mediocre tracks. Fav Track: So Real Light 3.5/5
I know a lot of people swear by this album as a genuine 10 out of 10, but it never really clicked all that much with me. Seems a little too self important at times, or maybe I just think that about the people who cover these songs. There’s talent there without a doubt, but nothing here fully knocks me down as much as I expect it to. Fave track: Last Goodbye
HL: "So Real", title track, "Corpus Christi Carol", "Hallelujah" Rode in on the hype train, left feeling a bit underwhelmed. "David Bowie considered Grace to be the best album ever made" "the best album ever made" Probably like many first listeners, I have only heard the Cohen cover (and oh, how I've heard it). I'm glad it's much more than an hour of sad guitar ballads, but the grungy "Eternal Life" sounds like it's from a completely different artist than his version of "Lilac Wine". Hard not to dwell on the deep potential here, since it sounds like someone on their way to realizing a grander artistic vision ALSO- never would have thought I'd hear a parallel to Soundgarden, but both Buckley and Cornell had a bit of a Zeppelin thing going in '94. Hear the Eastern percussion in both the last track of this and Superunknown's. 3.5 August 22, 2023
Voz maravillosa. Disco rollo.
Only knew Hallelujah before this. OK, so this guy could sing. Based on his screaming on Grace, he could have fronted a metal band. Then he turns around and sounds like Chris Isaak, then Joan Baez on Corpus Christi Carol (did NOT like this song, btw), then Lou Gramm on the last song, Forget Her (not sure if this one is officially part of the album as far as this list is concerned, but I liked it).
Already own it
So so so much weirder than I thought it would be. Might grow on me but I'll need some more time with it. 3/5
Hallelujah is such a standout, but it is decently enjoyable.
Some of the songs are sonically interesting and sound good, but the album itself is a slow trudge, DNF, but just barely making a three.
Some of these songs I've heard so many times and yet I've never listened to this record the whole way through before. I was allergic to the idea of Jeff Buckley for the longest time. Of course, this is dumb. The notion of "Taste" is a funny thing, just ask Plato, Kant and Bourdieu or in this context maybe Peel, Christgau, and Fantano but as anyone who reads my reviews probably already knows I'm a recovering music snob who came up with some strong DIY views. Anyway, good record. A little too long. Obviously a shame he passed on early.
Great voice, but an exhausting record to listen to. His version of 'Hallelujah' has been hyped to the moon and back ever since I have had the ability to hear, and I must say, it's not bad. Good, but a lot to take in. 2.5 / 5 stars.
3/5 Best: Lover, You Should've Come Over Worst: Corpus Christi Carol
This was a pretty decent singer-songwriter album with some alternative rock elements as well. The songs build nicely in particular the opening two tracks, however the album is very uneven in quality. Corpus Christi is forgettable and goes on too long, while the next track is completely left field with some grungy riff that lead into a generic 90s rock track. Overall not bad and he sings very well, but the album as a whole is uneven.
The album is fine. Not sure I'd call it great, but it's fine to listen to. Solid 3.
Where Rx bandits got their vocals, apparently
Not my style. Sounds fine
He had an amazing voice. His version of Hallelujah is beautiful (my favourite is still John Cale). I wasn't expecting such heavy drums and bass on some songs which was a nice surprise. I did find some of his songs went on longer than I cared for and while he has a nice voice, it also felt like he wailed a tad too much. But a nice album nonetheless.
👍
Meh
Generally fine, but not exceptional. Hallalejuah is great and is perfect for his style. Many other songs feel a little dated now. His death has probably impacted the legacy of this album.
I was really only familiar with hallelujah. Just to be clear this is the only version of hallelujah. I found the rest of the album kind of mediocre, but I'm not sure I knew what to expect going in. Apparently this guy was super influential with a bunch of people that I really like and respect. I may have to give this album a second listen in a different frame of mind.
Didn’t feel cohesive as an album but some good songs, relisten needed
PREFS : Mojo Pin, Grace, So Real, Hallelujah, Eternal Life, Dream Brother MOINS PREF : Corpus Christi Carol
Parts are pressing big time („Mojo Pin“, „Hallelujah“) but most of the album comes around more over emotional channels and somehow lacks the musical timelessness. Still 2.9
Folk-rock suave. Ni fu ni fa.
Voz maravillosa. Disco rollo.
Like it a lot. 3 stars.
Jeff Buckley has a stupendous voice and hallelujah is a song that can be listened to at any moment and chills will be felt. The rest of the album teeters on great singing ability and somewhat hymnal sounding music. Overall it’s a good album that featured his singing best. The songs themselves leave something to be desired with the talent. Would listen to most again. 7.0/10
appreciate the artistry, going to need more listens to really appreciate it
A bit Meh!
This was ok. Nothing really stood out to me aside from Hallelujah - and that isn’t even my favourite cover of the song.
😬😬😬 I don’t know I personally didn’t love his voice all that much. I know coming from my phone it’s exaggerated, but that’s how I listen to music and it just sounded so prominent and ehh. I think the length was good along with the music and he wasn’t like bad but just not amazing.
This is Jeff’s album and I feel like there’s a good amount where he really shines through but sometimes he kinda phones it in which he can’t really afford to because phoning it in is his bands job. Highs are high enough that imma call this one a really light three
Hallelujah makes this album, the rest was I enjoyed but didn't think it was amazing.
Musically great but the overindulgent wailing wears me out. This would have been perfect if Buckley had just toned it down a bit.
Apart from some extra boring songs like hallelujah this had some nice sounds
Meh. It’s fine. Don’t understand all the fuss.
Like that one song and the rest is cool too
Hallelujah
A bit of constipation, a bit of whine, heartbreak, some shouting, what does this album not have.. a high rating from me. Definitely some ok to good songs on there. But at eternal life I just had to stop it because it was awful.
A lot of wailing in it. Somehow you think it’s going to be the greatest but when you sit down and listen it’s just a bit grinding on the nerves. Held up by a couple of excellent tracks.
Tim Buckley is incredibly talented as a performer, with an impressive vocal range. He has this way of using his voice to create an intimate space with the listener that's really disarming and engaging. Some of the songs lean a bit into the melodramatic and a few of them are simply too long. But on the whole, this is a really strong album that is both somehow very much of its era and rather timeless. Fave Songs: Lover, You Should've Come Over; Lilac Wine; Hallelujah; Mojo Pin
Rock alternativo. Aburrido
This album is a hard one for me. I know I'm SUPPOSED to like it. I can tell why others do like it. I really WANT to like it... but I just don't. Buckley seems to be trying too hard to make his vocals do things that they don't have to. The songwriting and musicianship are top-class. The track listing and production are top-notch as well. I just don't like Buckley's voice. I have no problem with anyone claiming it is a 5 star album but it's just not for me.
some real 90's shit here. not really my thing to listen to every day but it is a good album.
This album resonated with a lot of people even though it sold poorly. I enjoy the album but it's so dreary and the songs sometimes can outlast my patience. Overall, I think it's an album that deserves to be on the list, though I would not come back to listen to it very often.
3/5 Even though it was pretty good music and singing and even a song that I like, I was underwhelmed. I read some stuff about him that made me feel like I should feel more, but I didn't. It wasn't bad, it wasn't my favourite. 🤷🏻♀️
I can see why this is highly rated but I'm not sure it's coherent or cohesive enough for me to also jump on the bandwagon. His voice is amazing and was clearly a gifted guitarist to boot, however I found the album a tad too depressing and a little whiny/self-involved maybe? Not sure. A real shame he only released this as I think he had a lot more to give.
Very 90s. Really good voice, really good cover of Hallelujah. Probably won’t come back to it.
Background music, again
I know I’ve heard the title track before, but I really liked it this time around. This is one of the highest 3s, and I wasn’t sure if I should give it a 4, but there are a couple of slow moments that I didn’t like. Didn’t really get the Hallelujah cover.
First listen - So i’d heard of but not heard Jeff Buckley, I was expecting more acoustic singer-songwriter but this is a lot more than that, a very complete LP. Sounding like Thom Yorke at times. Really difficult to label / categorize as the songs are so different. It’s not what I’d usually like but I can tell this is decent, worth repeated listens, probably a grower.
Lots of slow love songs, but undeniably insane voice. Forget Her and Lover you Should’ve Come over are great. 3.5
Good album but didn't feel it was anything spectacular. Wasn't familiar with Buckley's tragic story before this, it's a shame he didn't get the chance to make more music
It was aigt
I can see why people wax philosophical about Jeff Buckley but I just can't get on board. By the end of the album, I just felt like the listening experience had been a pointless exercise. In the interest of fairness, I'll admit that the musicianship is out of this world. Truly stellar. Mind-blowing at times, even. But Buckley's vocals are frustratingly lazy. Not that he's a bad singer, mind you. He just seems completely averse to actual melody lines or hooks. The wandering, off-the-cuff singing does exactly nothing for me. I know writing killer melody lines is hard but that doesn't mean you get to skip it.
Okay!
If there's one thing the author of this book loves more than post punk it's boring white men singing Hallelujah
A once in a lifetime voice
I sort of like this but not enough. It has pleasant moments but never really grabbed me.
Not as good as i remembered
Never cared too much about this one despite being obvious that JF was a massive talent and apart from the LC cover.
It’s nice, it drags but it’s not that bad, there are some atonal voice solos that are a bit cringe so it goes with a 3 / 5
Few good songs, gives me Led zepplin vibes. Good album overall. 6/10
Meh, I don’t know…wasn’t really feeling it. Maybe if I listened to it again, but really don’t feel like it. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and go with 3 stars but nothing about the album really captured my interest.
Not bad; obviously Hallelujah is amazing, but nothing else particularly stood out to me.
Hallelujah tho
Interesting album. The mellow parts pull you in to make the loud parts even more impactful
Today's album is passionate but weird, sinister but sleepy. Some tracks really connect with me in their sorrowfullness, but some have very little to latch on to. I like it marginally better than some other albums 8ve rated at 2, but not by a huge margin. Just squeaks into the 3 star for my tastes as an 9verall experience but I won't be listening to the album again, only certain tracks.
One good track, otherwise forgettable. Its a really good track though. 3/5
Kind of a surprise. Kind of had Led Zeppelin vocals and guitar sound mixed with 90s alt rock. Didn’t blow me away but enjoyed the album overall
Discordant songs and emotion is clear. Not necessarily stand out for my taste
Classic album, really enjoyed the title track. Doubt I'll go back to listen to the album in full again
Although not my vibe, this man was very talented.
not my style, but some nice tunes to zone out
There's some pretty decent songs on here. Pretty good writing. But nothing really blows my skirt up. For sure, the best song is the cover of Cohen. Which, I think is better than Cohen's version (not to bad mouth Cohen, I just don't think his register was good for the song or the weird synth), but not even close to the best one. Wainwright, Brandi Carlisle, John Cale. All better in my opinion. Buckley's is (was?) just the most famous.
Cry baby
Jeff Buckley has an incredible voice, good album but it was a little slow at places.
Overall, I enjoyed this album. I like the style of music and I felt the instrumentation was clean. Nevertheless, I can't give this a higher rating because I found the sound slightly but gratingly whiny and incessantly touched by sorrow. I think Buckley's voice was partially the cause.
3.5
I have expected it to be more melodic and interesting. Hallelujah is great, but not enough else to hold interest. It’s coherent, but not more than “fine”.
An old friend - at least 20 years now I've just had the two best (for me) tracks tagged. Listening to the rest of it, there's some good and some really not good. I'll be sticking to the two monsters - not Hallelujah though, that's overplayed massively
Ok album, some nice guitar music, not a fan of Buckley’s singing
It alright
It was good. Some fun parts. Definitely not a 3 but also definitely not a 4
I remember this album being huge amongst my peers in Sydney in the mid-90s, but I only knew his cover of Hallelujah. I enjoyed this.
Not the greatest of albums. The artist has Hallelujah and that’s it. Without that song I would have given it a worse score for sure.
Certainly not bad, but it is somewhat repetitive. It can be a little boring at times too.
3/5 okeyish
Its hard not to love his voice.
I was a nice listen. Obviously heard a few things from the album. I feel like the mystique around Jeff Buckley has less to do with his talent or the quality of this one release and more to do with the fact that he died young and fans are left wondering what he could have been.
Never really got this. I should donut I don’t Cover art: iconic cover
Other than a few moments (“Last Goodbye,” “Lover,” of course, “Hallelujah”), this is overwrought and not all that great. Title cut is particularly excessive and the singing generally is extreme; is he showing off on the Britten piece (which feels lovely but also that it belongs on a different record, maybe, if only for the rap-rock opening to next cut)?. The mood is also undercut by too many hard-rock/even metal-y riffs. This record was ubiquitous for being overhyped (IMHO) back in the day – who doesn’t love the dying-young-romantic-rock-n-roll-hero story? Old as Byron and Keats at least.
a lot going on but a bit needy
3.8 - Lots of soaring, operatic vocals and some strong 90s grunge-tinged guitars. Highlights (as expected): "Last Goodbye", "Hallelujah."
Classic mid 90s album. Angelic voice. Good variety. Some 90s light grunge. Definitive version of Hallelujah. Very sad that he died so young like his Dad.
Strange and delicate whale song. I thought 'I'll listen to more of this guys stuff!'. Only to discover he is dead. Very sad.
Very slow/sad crooner album. Seems to channel a bit of Thom Yorke in his voice. I've heard his version of Hallelujah before. Overall not my thing but it was ok for what it was.
it's listenable. 3/5
On the evening of May 29, 1997, Buckley's band flew to Memphis to join him in his studio to work on his new material. The same evening, Buckley went swimming fully dressed in Wolf River Harbor, a slack water channel of the Mississippi River, singing the chorus of "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin. Keith Foti, a roadie in Buckley's band, remained on shore. After moving a radio and guitar out of reach of the wake from a passing tugboat, Foti looked up to see that Buckley had vanished. The wake of the tug boat had swept him away from shore and under water. A rescue effort that night and the morning after by scuba teams and police failed to discover him. On June 4, passengers on the American Queen riverboat spotted his body in the Wolf River caught in some branches, and he was brought to land. Buckley's autopsy showed no signs of drugs or alcohol in his system, and the death was ruled an accidental drowning. The official Jeff Buckley website published a statement saying that his death was not mysterious and was not a suicide.
aight
It's OK. I didn't understand the fuss when it came out, still don't. Not as good as his dad, much better than copycat whiners such as Radiohead. John Cale doesn't get the credit he should for the OG arrangement of Hallelujah but I doubt he cares.
Pretty good album. Not really something I would go back for repeat listens very much, with the exception being the amazing cover of “hallelujah”.
Decent album
It's a good and very unique album especially for the time. I don't listen to the entire album very often.
Got some nice songs in there
I really like Last Goodbye, and of course his version of Hallelujah is pretty great. Corpus Christi Carol is a bit irritating though. He really had a strong and expressive voice, it’s sad he didn’t get the chance to make more records.
Today I learned that the song Teardrop by Massive Attack is about Jeff Buckley. Those lyrics and vocals were Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins who was involved with him before he died. As for the album, I really love the bassline on Last Goodbye and Hallelujah is a perfect 10. I could listen to Massive Attack ad nauseaum, but this album took some effort.
Identified a song I like on the radio and added to a play list - Good Bye. Couple other decent songs but too much mediocre ballad crap.
Widely acclaimed 90's alt record but I've never really taken the time to listen to it (though of course I've heard the big songs). I can see why it's an important record. He really does have a unique voice and he does some really cool stuff with it on here. Was recently watching something and learned that Jeff Buckley was huge influence on Radiohead as they were working on The Bends. I guess Thom Yorke saw Jeff Buckley around the time they were working on that record and Buckley's performance influenced Yorke to use falsetto on Fake Plastic Trees. So it's definitely an important record. Having said all that, I found it a bit hit or miss for me personally. Especially when it gets more operatic (Corpus Christi Carol). But the highs are pretty high. It's a strong 3 for me - probably close to a 4.
pretty good hard to pin to a genre funny how he wrote hallelujah considering his rendition isn't very good 3.5
Not really my type of music but can appreciate it
Folk-rock suave.
Monday morning
Gloomy voice, but awesome guitar
"Hallelujah" is a classic and is the most easy to my ears. The other songs were harder for me to appreciate, but the guitar play was good throughout the whole album. Favourite songs: Hallelujah and Dream Brother.
Ok. I'd heard a couple of these, but some of the songs got annoying.
It was fine. Couple of songs I liked a lot, but a couple that his voice really irritated me on.
I had never heard of Jeff Buckley or this album and it was a good listen. Will definitely go back to this. Sad that he died young.
His version of “Hallelujah” is the definitive one for me but I feel like all the songs could have been trimmed for excess. Almost every song is four and a half minutes at least.
Of course Hallelujah is epic, and the definitive version of the song. I like the songs that skew toward that heartfelt mysticism, as opposed to the songs that skew toward throwaway 90's alt rock.
I always thought that this album was a bit overrated.
Buena voz. Alguna canción reconocible. Pop.
great singing and decent instrumentation but most songs didn't hit me...
Možd bi bilo bolje da sam in the mood for it, al realno trica je super ocjena
I was never on the Buckley bandwagon first time around. Some great songs on here, not the biggest fan of his voice. Definitely needs another listen.
While the album is a bit slower tempo for my taste is definitely lovely on the ears. Jeff’s voice is beautiful. My favorite is lilac wine. Jeff is a great artists
I feel like the last half of this album has very 90s production.
Favorites: Last Goodbye, Lilac Wine, Forget Her
over rated. hallelujah unquestionably great - but he didn't even write it. lover, you should come over best song on album
I mean it's an alright listen. Has a bunch of listens on Spotify but I've never heard of him (not saying that I should've, just looks like he has a bigger audience). Light rock mixed with pseudo-folk. Has a cover of Hallelujah that's good and uses his range in it. 6/10.
Album was ok, lots of positive reviews at this guy meant a lot to people
Nice version of Hallelelujah.
Hyviä biisejä ja paskoja biisejä.
I get it - it's fine.
A victim of the mythmaking surrounding it in the 25 or so years since its release, because ultimately there are few albums that could ever stand up to the hero-worship that surrounds this. Mojo Pin, despite its terrible name, serves as a serpentine, undulating introduction to Buckley’s sound: taut, breathy vocals; explosions and constantly altering rhythms. But there are flaws. The main one being that it’s barely possible to know what Buckley is interested in beyond the sound of his own voice; his soaring/strangled vocals obscure any lyrics such that they become mere sound, devoid of any meaning. Until, of course, Hallelujah; delicately performed, cracked and beautiful - perhaps because despite Buckley’s protestations to the contrary his is a showman’s rather than a poet’s soul (just look at that album art…) and it takes a poet’s words to let him let us hear them.
I realize he is a good singer but I find his music boring. His cover of Hallelujah is good and I’ve even heard people say it’s better than Lenny’s version. Blasphemous!
the first thing that comes to mind is "Impassioned singing". Very wide range of styles here and he was a huge talent that was taken too soon, but I'm not a fan of some of his more maudlin material. This may grow on me with repeated listenings but it doesn't move me as much as many others have mentioned.
"I'm lying in my bed The blanket is warm This body will never be safe from harm" (Mojo pin) He pasado por este disco pero este disco no ha pasado por mí.
Helt okej album Bästa låtar: Hallelujah Lover, You Should've Come Over Eternal Life
I used to like it. Now it's annoying
Before this, I could have told you that Jeff Buckley is a musician. If I was truly pressed, I might have remembered that Buckley perhaps has the most popular cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" which is on this album (and is a great track). The music on Grace is okay. The lyrics to some of the tracks are not for me. 3 stars
This was a rather hit and miss. The less shouty ones were better.
Decent but slow at times
1. Perfect for my soothing playlist 2. Air right before/after the storm 3. Were going home, mom is driving 4. les miserables 5. ok u messed, i got it 6. bit basic but sounds good 7. rain vibe banger 8. churmch 9. neat 10. weird tension but probly my fav 11. bit dramatic but i like the rythm It was ok just not my cup of coffee
OMFG OMFG GUYS HE COVERED LILAC WINE FROM THE NINA SIMONE ALBUM IM SHAKING IT WAS SO GOOD i love this 🥰 last goodbye is perfect i’m not wrong ok the last half was not it sorry bae
Much better than I expected. This one will go into my rotation. I'm bummed that many of the ones I have liked the most are dead guys.
Could be a 4. Had some strong moments mixed with a few covers and many forgettable songs. Really liked Forget Her, Dream Brother, and Grace. If there's one song that nobody needs to cover again though, it's Hallelujah. Hot take?
For your acchiappanz
So, the first listen I wasn't impressed, but this could be an absolute grower, gotta give a couple more chances. Forget her is a gem.
Not a big fan.....liked 2 songs...that was it!!
No question he has talent, a great voice, some songs with moments including THAT cover but I tend to pick out the odd Jeff Buckley track and feel that this album is very overrated by critics etc etc. Nothing to dislike but he leaves me cold
Hallelujah was beautiful, but oddly out of place in the rest of the album. Still an enjoyable listen overall.
While I do appreciate this mans voice the songs do not hit any highs for me. It’s a beautiful sounding album but hasn’t really any songs I’d specifically go looking for to listen to again. Great album for background music though.
3.5
So effing 90’s it’s almost unbearable. Can’t beat Hallelujah and Lover You Should’ve Come Over but the rest is pretty time capsuled.
Breezy
Enjoyable. ***
The beginning had hope, was kinda like muse/radiohead with the singing but then it got way more religious (or maybe I just started paying attention to the lyrics?) and then it bumped again at the end
Fine.
I had heard one Buckley song before and it was on a different album so this was fresh. Just as his album cover shows, he is a mix of Alden and James Franco but also he seems like the kind of fella that spent most of his time in dive bars. These songs all feel like the person singing in the back of a lounge filled with cigar smoke and full drinks. He has a wide range in his voice but there were many songs where I thought he went too hard. If that is such a thing. It almost sounded like he was screaming but he has a great voice so I’m sure he just likes flexing those muscles. His songs run long in the tooth as well. Overall, the album wasn’t bad, but I don’t think I’ll find myself listening to it again.
So I only listened to about half of the album. What I can say though is that Jess Buckley has an amazing voice and a tone about him that no one else would be able to replicate. A total product of its time in the early-mid 90's and the amazing rendition of Hallelujah.
G
Probably the best version of Hallelujah
No jodan.
Obviously an extremely talented singer but musically not really my thing. Hallelujah is a classic. 6/10
it was good, but i don't know how often i'd re-listen to this
If Jeffrey Lee Pierce made a folk record this would be it. Some interesting tracks but more of a background adventure. Jeff's tone is very similar to JLP's so connected with that quality.
Very surprised by this one. It made me understand Hallelujah a lot more. So many different genres from grunge to operatic at times.
Buckley popularized hallelujah but it’s not the version in Shrek. I also liked “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over.” I was leaning more 3.5 with this album.
your tunes run a little long, Jeff, but you're alright - C
Not a fan of it. Not my type of music. Not bad music though.
I appreciate Jeff Buckley but I’m not a massive listener of Jeff Buckley.
Nice Hallellujah version
Why do I get the feeling the album was included solely for one song...?
1994: Hallelujah, Lover You Should've Come Over
Behalve the obvious best een matig album en saai album
Jeff Buckley’s “Sad Songs About a Breakup” has some merit, but it’s mostly forgettable. Hallelujah and Eternal Life were notable to me, but the rest felt like rather boring adult contemporary.
Langweilig, melancholisch, ausgebremst.
too slow, i didn’t really enjoy it
Woof. I had high hopes for this one. Nope.
I've generally struggled with this album every time I've tried to listen, and this was no different. I hear how transcendent the album is, how it changed people's lives, etc. and for me it has never hit hard at all. He's undeniably talented and uses dynamics well, but it feels overwrought and a bit melodramatic which for me kills much of the interest musically. The style for me fits neatly into the "this is fine" category, but I never really want to listen to anything he had to put out.
This was not my cup of tea. The production and mixing is brilliant, the sounds through you around, which is amazing. Nonetheless it is a bit too chaotic for me. Of course Hallelujah is the best song on the album and one of my personal favourites. I like to think that Leonard Cohen heard Buckely’s version and thought that is how it is done.
Idk man
If vanilla ice cream was an album, that would be it. Except this description also applies to many albums on this list.
We just don’t yearn like we used to. I really hated the opening track but the rest I could get behind if I didn’t listen too closely.
I grew up with two jeff buckley hating parents and so I was predisposed to not really like this. I knew the singles and I knew Lover… is a hit with the kids, but there wasn’t much here for me. Could easily position Last Goodbye amongst other music of the era and so that was probably my favourite
Quite annoying and not good. His version of Hallelujah is the best version because his voice is sickly sweet and he’s restrained enough there to do it great justice. That’s worth a second star alone. His Lilac Wine is okay, but I prefer Nina Simone’s to be honest. The rest made me very annoyed.
Bem chato.
Great voice, I just don't get it.
A strange one, this, as it incorporates many ideas and styles which should, in theory, appeal to me. Definite Radiohead vibes in both the instrumentation and vocals, and there were aspects throughout that you could draw a through line to post rock or math rock with. The execution to me just felt off and a bit laboured, however. Almost like every song had to build and drone towards some grand conclusion whilst "really hitting you in the feels, man" along the way. And by that, I mean that I felt nothing but mild irritation.
I never got Buckey’s popularity and now after listening to it I still don’t. Straight line from this to John Mayer
Meh
Very noisy
Nice
boring
Much like pet Sounds earlier this is one of the albums that has just never clicked for me which is strange because everything about my music taste says I should love Jeff Buckley. I should probably give it a relisten but from memory it didn't feel like a cohesive album and the hits don't make up for that. I just never really understood the hype/respect Buckley commands.
Not bad. Not really my thing though.
90’s Rock
Nah
I didn't know that Lover, You Should Have Come Over is that one famous song on tiktok. It's so good though wow!!! Besides that one, however, I really REALLY didn't enjoy it.
Twee goede nummers. Hallelujah en Lover, You Should've Come Over.
Mojo Pin — its got Georgia Torches The Past guitar Grace — it was fine Last Goodbye — its kind of forgettable Lilac Wine —ehh So Real — this one wasnt that bad Hallelujah — oh its the song Lover, You Should’ve Come Over — i think i just prefer more modern(late 2000s+) songs or songs that are very old (vera lynn) Corpus Christi Carol — expected, meh. Eternal Life — honestly was pretty good Dream Brother — mmm eh Forget Her — yeah all in all there are like 2 songs id listen to in this album and its either hallelujah or eternal life
2-3 Very easy to listen to but nothing exciting.
Meh
Laaaaangweilig.
zu traurig, melancholisch für mich
Always appreciated this and can see how influential it has been, but aside from a couple of songs this didn't grab me. And I've tried!
