Reviews (page 14 of 14)

Average overall, long stretches where the songs sound the same and it makes the album drag.

Sad rock saved by the last 3 songs

This album should be better because hallelujah is great. Rest meh

Not my jam, kept waiting for that one song I liked, didn't happen

This album started out strong for me and dwindled off

Some good but a bit some droned on.

I've never understood the Jeff Buckley thing. I know a lot of folks who love this album, really carry a reverence for it. And it's certainly fine and there's at least one bright spot - So Real sounds like a lost Tears for Fears track. But this feels very ordinary to me. I don't have any sentimental attachment to it, so maybe that's part of it. But this one has been overhyped in my world.

2.5. Churchy

I enjoyed "Lover, You Should've Come Over," but that's about it.

Slow, sappy, generally boring. Don’t hate it but wouldn’t bother with another listen.

nice voice. ok music. didn't like the harder rock sounding stuff in this album.

Not my type

Another snooze.

Musically the album bounces between bashing cymbals rock with a lot of falsettos and an ethereal operatic sound. Good version of Hallelujah though! Not my taste.

There is some merit here, but as a whole the album is overwrought and a bit much to take, really. Most of the songs have some nice musical moments, and most of the songs also ultimately annoyed me. I might have loved it when I was 14 and every single thing mattered so much.

Good rhythms and riffs but I honestly couldn’t stand his whiny voice for most of it. Can’t believe Bowie called this the greatest album of all time. I do like to think he foreshadowed his own demise in So Real with the line “I couldn’t awake from the nightmare that sucked me in and pulled me under.” Spooky.

Probably my third favorite version of Hallelujah, couldn’t get into the rest of the album

not for me

Ok, so I know this is an album I’m meant to adore. I just…don’t. It’s super average and in the words of the Arctic Monkeys before they crooned themselves into the books of pretentiousness…don’t believe the hype.

i like the music, i just don’t like his voice

Before his death, Jeff Buckley was only known as Tim Buckley’s son. I’m sure people expected Jeff to make the same music as his father. Their music is similar in a way, but I feel as though Jeff brought a more 90s alternative rock edge to his songs. The first few songs were great, but the slower songs drug on a bit and I didn’t enjoy them as much.

Besides Hallelujah I just didn’t see much to like in this.

Jakieś wycie, stukanie.

Man has a great voice and objectively the good at the whole music thing but I'm not into the whole "every song is about lost love" type of album

I really did not enjoy this, with the exception of Eternal Life. I would have liked Hallelujah, but at this point in time, everyone has done Hallelujah. I mean I do like it, but this dude didn't even write it.

very interesting voice. androgynous. depending on what song you are hearing, it can sound like a high pitched male or a lower pitched female. certainly unique. other than that, the music is kind of generic. not a fan.

Something oppressive about his delivery for me, difficult to tolerate. Maybe it would be better with a different singer?

I picked up a cheap copy of this but have always struggled. I can't hear how it's the masterpiece that many claim. I've not really listened to it in isolation. I've had things going on whilst this is in the background. I gave it a proper listen this morning. No distractions, just the music. It'a not bad, but I still can't hear that magical sound that many pin upon it.

Ok album, but nothing great

Mojo Pin was very slow until the end Lilac Wine sehr gut Hallelujah makes me wanna scream it’s gonna get stuck in my head again Lover, You Should’ve Come Over ist sehr gut Eternal Life i like the instrumentals Rest mid Not my kind of album but it’s not necessarily bad

Kind of boring and slow. Hallelujah is a banger though.

'eh a little slow and not really my style. 2/5

Liked Hallelujah but besides that not that great

Listened Before? N I assume this is on the list because of Hallelujah. It is a song that's worthy of the list itself, so that's great. I don't really groove with the rest of this. It's ok. It's like if U2 was not as good. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Hallelujah

Ei tää huono ollut! Ei aivan mua varten vaan. 2/5

Tykkäsin teininä, mutta nykyään tässä on sama ongelma kuin monesti progessa tai metallissa, että tuntuu kovin väkinäiseltä. Sellaista into piukeena musisointia, eli rumasti sanottuna kikkelimusaa. Lopun bonus-biisi oli ihan hyvä.

Jaa-a, nyt jäi kyllä erittäin geneeriseksi. Ei korvia särkevällä tavalla, mutta löysää on.

Sounds like this guy poured his heart into this album. I really appreciate that.

Not much to say about this one for me

I never understood the appeal of Jeff Buckley. I still don't.

Interesting comparison to his dad's work, the fact that choir and church style songs were followed by some progressive dark psychedelic works impressed me

This one is just all over the place stylistically and can't find a niche where it can thrive. Zig-zagging from 90s' grunge-adjacent alt-rock to operatic ballads to Leonard Cohen covers is guaranteed whiplash, and doesn't leave much room for Buckley to demonstrate much artistry given how many vocal personas he has to put on in the course of 50 minutes.

Eh. One brilliant remake.

Bit dreary

Grace is the only album by American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. At release this album had poor sales and mixed reviews, but the album has risen in reputation in recent years. 13 years after release, the album re-entered the Australia albums chart and it has been certified 8x platinum in Australia. The alternative rock / folk rock album has been critically acclaimed in recent years and did receive some favorable reviews at release, but was largely ignored by the general public. The music production & singing talent on this album was impressive for a debut album. The "Hallelujah" track is an easy favorite and has been inducted into the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry. I wonder if Jeff Buckley would've created more solo albums if this one hadn't sold so poorly. I liked the album, but I would've been one of the general public that did not buy this album (just because it's not my vibe).

2/11, 18%

Not for me ):

I was not familiar with this singer. The songs are inconsistent and kind of all over the place. The version of Hallelujah was the best song. Overall the album isn't that good.

Was alright, not horrible but very meh…

I knew this was coming sooner or later and I've been dreading it. I had a housemate in the early 00s who was obsessed with this shit and she played it constantly for months. His vibrato wailing drives me insane, and the music is just 90s alterna-crud, I guess similar to something shit like radiohead? And on top of all that, Jeff killed himself and doesn't have to put up with his annoying pretend hippie fans anymore, but the rest of us do. Thanks, ya prick. 2/5.

I found it painfully boring.

Never got it. Still don’t.

A bit chaotic of an album, I'm not sure... It felt a bit unimagined to me.

I really don’t like this. I found the voice to be very annoying and the instruments were too earnest. I wouldn’t listen twice.

very good volcas, but it was too slow for me. Im justs a whore for upbeat music so, 2/5 favorite song: Last Goodbye least favorite song: Mojo Pin

I think this album is just ok. Most of it is too slow and depressing for me. Clearly he was a pretty unhappy guy. The high point is his cover of Hallelujah. I think that ranks up among the greatest covers ever.

How sad that the original version of "Hallelujah" is probably my least favorite that I've heard. This didn't do anything for me at all. Two stars for "almost".

Never really got this. His cover of "Hallelujah" is heavenly, but the rest is messy and unfocused. It's better in its quieter moments, the louder bits are sub "Pablo Honey"-era Radiohead.

2…3…2?…3?…2?…3?…2…3… I don’t have the energy to nitpick this decision. The cover of Hallelujah is good, but we just heard Leonard Cohen the other day and I’m tired of him, even in cover form. Sorry Jeff.

File under "Albums that I didn't listen to for the first go-round in the 90s and, it turns out, for good reason". It's just not my bag, baby. I appreciate the craft of the album but I just don't enjoy its contents. As well, I am haunted by the middle-aged Jeff Buckley fan I met at a party in the 2000s who was conflicted that his estate kept releasing new albums that gave fans new music but not good quality music. I just... no.

It's alright, bit overrated.

Not my style

Good but overrated, imo.

Bought this album sometime in middle school or high school. Couldn't get into it then and can't get into it now. Has some neat songs but just not for me.

tellement chiant Grace écoutable

Really not that impressed. 2 decent songs...the rest is just kind of uninspired.

Piti pari kertaa kuunnella, et pysty mielipiteen muodostaa: meinas toimii, mut kokonaisuus jäi vähän laimeeks

Good voice - tick Some good songs - tick But overall, and perhaps (probably!) through my own deficiencies, the album fails to lift me up. Tragedies aside, it needs more noise

moany whiny no

Sorry, but I just don't like his voice or music. Don't like his Dad's stuff either. I must be wrong because everyone seems to think they are both geniuses.

Is Hallelujah the only reason this made the list?

This is a pretty record. Vocals and guitar. He was a true talent. I learned about Jeff Buckley from my friend Nick, who started playing guitar at the same time I did (Jr High) and he really liked him. I wasn't able to have an open mind about Christian music at that time. I probably still don't. At this point, I care about that almost not at all...ha. But the sticking point for me is the perfection of this record. It almost seems bleached it's so pure and clean. But I wouldn't complain about Steely Dan for that, and you could say the same thing about them. Double standard.

I'm lukewarm on this one. I get that he kinda perfected the crooning, angsty folk/rock genre - but it's just not my bag. I spent most of my listening experience waiting for the next song. Highlights: Lover, You Should've Come Over is - by far - the standout track for me. The story, the lyrics, the arrangement, Buckley's vocals - all amazing. This is the first time during this experience that I skipped back to listen to a song again just to see if it held up, and it did. Hallelujah. This is a great version of the song. But, in fairness, as long as you stick close to Cohen's original version, I'm gonna love it. Honorable mentions: Forget Her is a cool song. Eternal Life was also good, but didn't feel like it belonged on the album. Anyway, I'll definitely revisit a few of these tracks, but - as an album - meh.

I have heard good things about this album, so I had somewhat high expectations. Unfortunately his album was disappointing. 2/5 stars for Hallelujah and Lilac Wine, because those were the only songs I liked.

A strange mix of an album. Bit too saccharin for my tastes.

Too churchy

Buckley is an amazing guitarist. Loved his Hallelujah. He has a beautiful, angelic voice but I am not a fan of a full album of whispery songs. But definitely a talented person.

This album was alright. A bit boring. He’s got an amazing voice, but I found it to be quite similar to Chris Cornell’s voice, but not as soulful. Also Buckley didn’t have bands like the rest of Soundgarden or Audioslave backing him to make his music that interesting or rocking.

Meh. Not my kind of maudlin.

not reacting well to his precious voice....a lil emo too.

Not for me 🤷🏻‍♂️

one good song

Just OK.

Great cover of Hallelujah... as far as other songs... they're also here. Very much an album where one song is head and shoulders above everything else.

"So Real" is pretty good at least.

Glad I got to hear where that song from Shrek came from

Big Nope. Disappointing and annoying.

Une seule chanson correcte et elle est même pas de lui...

Really? This is supposed to be, "one of the greatest albums of all time"? I'm both bored and horrified at the voice I'm having to endure. Pop crooner with a few songs dipped briefly in a au jus of grunge. The best part of this album was when it finished Spotify jumped to the Smiths song, "Bigmouth Strikes Again" as if to apologize for what I'd just had to endure.

Sry, too melacholy

I sat through this while the power was off at my house. I wish I didn't waste the battery on my phone.

With the sole exception of Hallelujah, this album is a waste of good vinyl. Hallelujah is worth adding to your playlist, but it is not really any better than the Cale or Wainwright covers.

Still not a fan of this cat

I did not like this as much as I had hoped. It seemed like a mashup of George Michael and Chris Cornell without the vocal strength. There were a couple of okay tracks. The Hallelujah was nowhere as great as people claim. Did not favorite one track.

I know some people absolutely love this and I can see why they would but I absolutely cannot stand this album. I haaaaaaaaaate this guy's voice. Absolute nails on a chalkboard.

not really my thing

Name sounds familiar, thought we'd done one of his before, but I can't find it. Anyway, 2 sort of bright spots. Both covers. First Lilac Wine, started off really well, then he said the word 'Lilac'. I hate it when people make a point of pronouncing the A in lilac, it just grates. Other than that it was a fair version, just not as good as Elkie's. And his cover of Hallelujah was ok too. But even together these two could not drag this album out of the mire. Its a high 1, but can't quite get to the dizzying heights of a 2.

Everything about this gets on my nerves.

BORING (as hell).

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

This is cheesy and shitty

Hallelujah itz over

I've had enough with these Jeff Buckley worshippers talking about how beautifully haunting it or whatever string of adjectives they use. Jeff Buckley is not good, and if he never died he'd be just another guy like Son House.

Un peu monotone

Terrible fuck aas album. 0/10, 0.00%

I just don't like it. Something about his voice, or the way he performs. He butchered one of my top 10 favorite songs of all time for this album - Hallelujah. On paper, I should be his #1 fan but nothing about this lands for me.

indubbiamente potente, ma super pesante

Yes, yes, I know, he’s a legend, it was tragic, extraordinary voice, hugely influential, blah, blah, etc. I get it. However, my ears only ever hear screechy, warbling, directionless twaddle. It’s my loss. It really is something that should tick all the boxes for me but I think I must be allergic, or something. I’ve never made it all the way through a single song on this record, and I probably never will.

I have always had a hard time with Jeff Buckley and the devotion thrown at him. I came to this album trying to be open-minded and first track in and I was thinking, better than I remember it... then it all went wrong. I just kept thinking "calm down you'll do yourself a mischief there" and so it continued. Seems to me to fall into the great musicain that just does nothing for me category, call me a philistine...

Boring (except for Hallelujah)

very boring

This record is like a zombie, that no matter how many times it passes away, it comes crawling back. Heard in the 90s, then the early 2000s, 2010s and now again. And not once, in all those times, have I liked it. So affected and overwrought and show-offy that there are barely songs, just wailing melodramatic angst. And KD Lang's Hallelujah blows this one out of the water.

no likey

Yawn. I tried getting into this ages ago and couldn’t. Listening to this now I mean yeah Buckley’s voice is amazing but the songs are extremely weak. There’s nothing there working for it except for the vocals and the songs just sound like an endless droning lullaby. I know it’s considered super influential and stuff and yeah you could hear this vocal style all over the nineties. It’s just so dull, willing to go as high as two stars. No, one.

This is terrible. Not idea why anyone would listen to this dreck

This is like the ur-90s coffeehouse singer Really not my thing

Tedious, boring, overrated hipster rock. Almost any rock album from the 1990s was more enjoyable than this. Only slightly less soporific than his dad's music. When I was at university, in the 4 years leading up to this record's release, there were multiple music school dorm jam bands on every U.S. campus that sounded exactly like this and they played at all the coffee houses on campus. They were a dime a dozen. Nothing special. They too were filled with so much angst and narcissism that was filled with emotional immaturity. Guess we know his Dad never taught him about the buddy system when you go swimming. One nice "Hallelujah" cover and a bunch of wankery.

listening when: morning thoughts: i mean hopefully when i look back ill be less petty but rn on instinct it sucked rating:

I feel tortured.

Tuli jonkinlainen primitiivireaktio tätä naapurin runoilijapoikaa vastaan. En tykännyt yhtään, enkä saanut tästä mitään irti.

Haut mich null vom Hocker

this shit gave me whiplash

Какие-то унылые христианские завывания

This is the 178th album I’m rating. I've heard many great things about him and this album. I've also heard that his version of Hallelujah was incredible, but I've always thought the Leonard Cohen version of Hallelujah was better so who knows if it's any good. Adding to my Playlist - Lilac Wine, So Real, Lover, You Should've Come Over, Corpus Christi Carol, and Dream Brother. Not Adding to my Playlist - Mojo Pin, Grace, Last Goodbye, Hallelujah, and Eternal Life. All in all I liked 5/10 songs. My biggest problem with this album is that Jeff Buckley kept on ruining the songs at the end.

Just like his father Tim, it's trash music with garbage lyrics, and it's a waste of my time on this beautiful Summer morning. Thankfully, this was the only album he ever had. Favorite Track: "Eternal Life".

Candidate for most overrated album ever. Unbearable.

Erschliesst sich mir nicht, wieso es plötzlich wieder auftauchte.

This was awful... I'm trying to think of a reason not to fail it, but I got nothin'... tunes are bland... his voice is grating (especially when he goes for the high notes)... songs tend to linger longer than they should... and at times, it's just plain noise... I also see that its reception wasn't so hot when it originally came out, and it was only after his foolishly unnecessary death that opinions warmed... suspicious...

Good grief. I reckon this guy cries when he ejaculates.

Just not a fan of the albums that are purposefully not cohesive. Not really taking any of these with me. 90's were a weird time for white people

Already heard it. It’s grossly overrated it sounds like over polished Blind Melon. They just did a really good job of pushing it was good, and so people repeat, but nobody that is even a fan remembers a song name. Everyone just remembers hallelujah. People should remember his father more.

Not my type of music

1 star Hard to start your day in a worse manner. The song carrying the album is not even his own.

So mid No vibe Even hallelujah was mid

Nie lubię, ma momenty, ale ogólnie raczej męczy i nudzi.

Melodramatic and overwrought- which I don’t always object to - but this was borderline insufferable.

1/11 but interesting for sure 9/100

1.5 he has a great voice but every song is so over the top and just not fun to listen to

God i find this kind of stuff insufferable. It sounds like he thinks he's profound.

Have never enjoyed Buckely's vocals. close to ASMR but grating. One good song (obvious). Overrated

Listened, then listened to his Da, now he had talent.

This is another one of these that just confuses me. Who is this for? Who puts on this generic crap and rocks out to it?

A shitty emo John Meyer if he even plays.

Not my cup of tea

could i write poetry to this? n

A voice like a broken wine glass. Or whine glass. Piercing and grating and over-acted.

Joder quin conyàs d'àlbum i com agafa cançons com Hallellujah i se les carrega. No he pogut eh m'ha avorrit moltíssim. A més hi ha un parell de coses de producció que perquè les noti jo molt òbvies han de ser. ELR: 3/5

Oh, no. Just no. Music to spiral into neverending depression, if that's your bag.

Style seemed all over the place. Couldn't get into it. 1/5

Did not enjoy - couldn’t finish

Not for me

Dit is echt heel vaag. Mij echt veel te zweverig. *

I tried so hard to like this. Some of these songs were very familiar to me. But, it just didn’t move me.

I was looking forward to this album when I saw it pop up ... but was frankly disappointed. The continuous reaches to his falsetto or screeching voices was irritating. I think he was better suited for folk or ballads with his haunting singing voice, but you have to wonder why his songs are so dark and despairing.

Debbie downer of an album

Not into the singer-songwriter stuff

I had some friends in college that were obsessed with this album but he just doesn't do it for me. I clearly hear the emotion that he is feeling but I guess since my heart can't comprehend that emotion my ears can't enjoy his delivery

Mag ich nicht.

I didn’t like this album except for hallelujah which I already knew

Hurt my head listening to his high pitched whiney voice

I’m not a fan of this album. Not one song I enjoyed. Gave it a go, though.

It's very generic early 90's alternative. I would have been cool with this playing in the background in a little indie coffee co-op in the mid 2000's. I don't want to actually listen to it.

Why, Jeff? Why. Such an annoying voice, and too much noise.

Too sad and slow for my taste

Tragic story about this guy. Lots of talent but not my cup of tea

this? now this is that kinda stuff i do not like

Sleepy music some of the beats were ok. Knew \"hallelujah\"

I went into it only knowing Hallelujah. I do ultimately understand why this album is so highly regarded, it’s beautifully written and performed. Lyrically it’s strong for most of it, and of course Jeff Buckley’s story is a tragedy, but this album does nothing for me. Eternal Life is the only one I would consider listening to again on my own time. In general it’s not my taste. It’s just kind of boring to me and too slow - I went into it for some reason figuring that was going to be case and I was correct. Corpus Christi Carol sounded incredible and angelic and I think it’s a high point of the album, but still not for my personal taste. I suspect this will be one of my lower rated albums on the list.

Arguably has a good voice, but I didn't find any of these songs particularly deep, interesting, or enjoyable. The cover of Hallelujah was fine, but nothing to get excited about.

If you’re into the emotion behind music, it’s not really there. The music is great if you are trying to set a mood but otherwise feels very hollow. Not my genre at all but was great on Shrek.

average singer and subpar songwriter

wow, what a stinker - absolutely ghastly ululating

Overrated

Zzzzzzzzzzzz

słabe bardzo, kicz

Not my style

Overrated

Not my thing, so didn't really engage. The songs or the performances didn't really grab me, so not much else I can say about this really. Hallelujah is an improvement on Leonard Cohen, but then that's not really difficult.

What a slog to get through. Wake me up when this album ends.

This is one if the worst things I've ever listened to. 90s soft rock is awful. Plus he ruined a Leonard Cohen song. Would give it less than 1 star if I could.

Mojo Pin- 7/10 Grace- 6/10 Last Goodbye- 2/10 Lilac Wine- 3/10 So Real- 2/10 Hallelujah- 0/10 Lover, You Should've Come Over- 4/10 Corpus Christi Carol- 1/10 Eternal Life- 1/10 Dream Brother- 2/10 Forget Her- 3/10 Grace- 2/10

To slooooooooooooow

This is right up there with the worst albums I have ever heard! With the ever-so-slight exception of Eternal Life, this is nothing but sheer auditory abuse! I'm not entirely sure why he's imitating a bag of drowning cats because legend will have you believe that Jeff can actually sing, and pretty well too; this is definitely not proof of that. If you take away the god awful vocals there may be a hint of somewhat enjoyable music left as there is some nice guitar and drum work in there, otherwise, I'd rather two well hung men violently penetrate my ears than hear this again!

Staright garbage

Looks bad-Katy. Little does she know I'm mad at her and she's bad because she didn't call me sexy. What a bitch :((((

The album is consistent and Buckley has a great voice, but it’s not really for me.

Uggg. First listen is a slog. So real is the first stand out song. This sounds like every local generic bar band. First album so far that I actively wanted to turn off.

One decent track

Già lo conosco, capolavoro
