Take me out - ansonsten ein solides Album.
I knew a few of the songs. After listening to the whole album, I think they make good, simple rock songs, and by that I mean that the songs are lyrically repetitive. I'm biased because I like to sing music, but the songs were still good at setting a tone.
Unfortunately for Franz, he had to follow Dark Side of the Moon. But to be honest, I'm not sure that would have adjusted my rating that much. Take Me Out is a great tune. Other than that a lot of generic pop sounds. It was OK as background music, but nothing stood out that made me want to revisit. But I do have the say, all the random Spotify play after this album has been great. Right down the middle for me. 2.5 Ill round up to 3 for Take Me Out and the great tunes that followed.
3 Take Me Out is a great song, but outside of that this is a pretty generic 2000s alternative rock record. In many ways this just feels like a natural continuation of the whole garage rock revival thing that The Strokes started and perhaps a precursor to where the Arctic Monkeys would later take it, but ultimately, it’s not quite as catchy or as interesting as either group’s spin on the genre. The only song I would say that I particularly enjoyed and that stood out to me besides the mega-hit was Michael, which has a really solid, catchy chorus to it - outside of that, everything felt like pretty standard, forgettable alternative fare from the era. I guess you could say the dude has a bit of a distinct voice, but even then it seemed to have the same kind of general quirky flair to it that a lot of indie male vocalists were experimenting with at this time. I can see how this could have been a big deal when it came out, but sitting here twenty years later, I just don’t feel that it’s an album that has or will stand the test of time (though compared to a lot of other stuff from this time period, it certainly could have aged a lot worse). Don’t have much else to say on this one besides that. It’s a fine album and far from the kind of thing I would avoid as an alternative rock fan myself, but I just don’t ever see myself opting for this album specifically over a lot of similar ones - will probably just keep it to Take Me Out appearing in the shuffle once in a while.
Day 1 - Franz Ferdinand (2004) I genuinely don't know what's to expect from Franz Ferdinand's eponym. The album, however, is noted to have won the 2004 Mercury Music Prize whilst selling over 3.6 million worldwide, so I'm looking forward to give it a spin :> ── ࣪˖ ࣪ ⊹ ࣪ ˖ ── Listening to "Jacqueline," my first impression of Franz Ferdinand is that it is a bit dry and monotonous. It doesn't grab at me and sounds similar to any other 2000s Indies act, let's say The Strokes, but watered down... "Tell Her Tonight" is a bit more upbeat and an overall funky song (♪ I have to tell her, you tell her tonight! ♫) - it doesn't cut it for me though and nor does "Take Me Out." I can't really decipher the vocalist's on "The Dark Of The Matinée" but it's got a good beat. And unlike its predecessors, the song is upbeat and full of life, with a groovy bass riff. Now we're talking! "Auf Achse" seems to be a more mellow, and superior, sequel to "Tell Her Tonight." It starts off with a rather cynical stream of verses ( ♪ You see her, you can't have her. You hear her, you can't hold her ♫) before suddenly exploding into an indulgent frenzy (♪ She's not so special so look what you've done ♫). I've a feeling that Radiohead fans may enjoy this song. And, oh God, "Cheating On You" heads back to the dry and repetitive formula... this time the band brings in a hint of garage rock. "Cheating On You" sounds suspiciously similar to Nirvana, if they were 2000s and nobody cared for their music. Neither "This Fire" nor "Darts Of Pleasure" are particularly remarkable, nor deserve their individual entry. "Michael" is just too much for me; ♪ Michael, you're the boy with all the leather hips, sticky hair, sticky hips, stubble on my sticky lips ♫. It's a bit sickening, really, and sounds like royalty-free rock music, although most tracks on Franz Ferdinand do. "Come On Home" is surprisingly good - the synths and distortions really add depth to the song. It's a bit similar to "Auf Achse," except more angsty, dark-tinged and heavier. If I were to pick a favourite on the album, "Come On Home" would be it :> The closer, 40', similar to most of the album, is a bit unremarkable. Overall, although they're a few bangers in the album, Franz Ferdinand's setlist are spinoffs of similar bands in the indie rock scene. They're not horrible but you won't miss much skipping the album.
Never a fan cause I was WAY too cool listening to Phish and the Dead but as a mature adult whi is a fan of new wave fro.the 80s I see a good bit of value here.
Straight Brit-Pop.
An above average album, but nothing great. Take Me Out is obviously a hit and there weren't any bad songs on the album really. However, I can't help but feel like I'm at a friend's band's show at a local bar with some of these songs. 6.5/10 (3.25/5)
Very familiar with this one. It's fun, but it's just about nostalgia for me. Nothing in here pushing me forward. Just a simple recall for the melancholic party boys era.
Fun and enjoyable rock album.
some more classic indie rock garage rock revival from the early 00's.
Never could get completely into this album growing up, still rings true. Not bad though just not my taste.
Better than I expected.
It’s catchy…
Kind of boring but some good tunes. Can hear a lot of what indie rock sounds like today. Way ahead of its time
OK
I go back and forth on this kind of art rock from 2000s. 3.5 on this one.
Fun album. Recognized like 3 songs.
Likable music. Had never heard of Franz Ferdinand, which blew my grandson away.
Some good songs
Fun, peppy album, but I probably won't bother going back. Bass player is the best part.
i vibe with some of the songs a lot, but i don't enjoy the general feeling of the album.
Good, solid album. I liked it, didn’t love it.
Not quite my taste
The stand out single is obviously a bop but there are a decent number of really strong tracks as well as that. Not the best indie album of the mid 2000s by any stretch but very solid.
Stompy Indie Disco!
Known this album for a long time and over time my opinion has not changed much. The 2 hits from this album, Take Me Out and This Fire are still my favorite tracks and the album can't escape the mundane.
Good but not great; indicatives of uninspired rock music during the aughts.
Pretty good, chill rock. But a bit similar from song to song, wish it was a bit spicier/harder?
⭐️⭐️⭐️ punk sound, some really fun songs - vibes of Blondie, The Killers, and The Beatles. Spotify brought up The Black Keys - so definitely indie punk rock.
6/10
Amazing Franz Ferdinand recorded this album before his death. The audio quality is astounding for something so old!
It's okay
3/5 It's alright, with hits like "Take Me Out" and "This Fire", its not doubt a classic thrash rock album, but I'd rather personally listen to The Kooks, Interpol, or Bloc Party. Its still a decent album but not something I'd listen to regularly.
Solidan ko Bogdan
Better than I thought.
Meh. But love the stand out hit "Take Me Out".
I think it's held up pretty well for being 20 years old. I wasn't a huge fan at the time but this sounded pretty good
Take Me Out is still an excellent track. Rest, perfectly fine.
I remember a lot of fuss about this band and can still picture all the billboards for this album on my first trip to NYC. Despite that, I’d never listened. I only recognized one song, and the rest of the album was decent, though not particularly exciting.
Pretty good album.
Good so far 3
Solid album, and Take Me Out is an all time banger
Very solid and fun. Some post punk influence. Torn between three and four.
I see why, but you know...it's not my bag.
Good album. ‘Take Me Out’ is a classic of the early 2000’s, and the rest is nice indie rock.
Not a bad album. Some songs were fun and new and others were not my favourite.
Only listened to 3 songs, wasn’t crazy about it but it wasn’t horrible.
Ok!
I say this a lot on these reviews, but I'll say it again. This is OK. It's not amazing, and it's not bad. It's very OK. This came out when I was buying a lot of music and reading a lot of music magazines, and so I listened to this at the time - and it was OK then, too. Like so many other albums here I wouldn't be upset to listen to it again, and I'm also unlikely to seek it out for another listen. It's OK.
Well performed and executed, but ultimately faceless.
Some very good dance punk/indie, the members of the band are competent at their job, and the song writing at most songs is very good, my only gripe is that a lot of it sounds derivative of other bands from that time and the eighties
danceable
Yks klassikkobiisikin siel. Ihan jees
This is some well-seasoned rock. Franz Ferdinand have a magical ability to structure their songs in a way that's genuinely interesting - these aren't just 3-chord throwaways.
Re-listen. This is one of the 3s that is sort of close to a 4, but I just don’t love any of the songs (even Take Me Out). Most of the songs are enjoyable though, which is pretty rare for me.
It's ok
Better than I remembered but I dislike the vocals quite a lot.
Starts strong(ish, Tell Her Tonight is pretty bad), but fizzles out towards the end. Still very enjoyable for its high highs.
didnt like it as much as I hoped
god, ikke vildt sådan memorable for mig
"this fire"is a banger, on top of that, a solid album.
I enjoyed this. I would listen again.
solid. could i write poetry to this? y
I remembered this album being a 5, but as I listened yesterday I realized that I don't like it as much as I thought I did. It was the right album at the right time, but that time has passed.
Did not find much signifigamce
Noiosetto dopo un po
Besides "Take Me Out", I don't think I recognized the other songs. Subsequently, they didn't stand out too much either. Does not bode well for the band. Songs started to blur together, couldn't really pick out any of them that really stood out. Just felt like any standard early 2000's band to me.
gostosinho
Michael, Take Me Out and Come on Home stand out from the rest of the album, which feels a little samey. This is a good album for background music at a party or for noise while cleaning, exercising, etc. Not something I would sit and just listen to. I didn’t dislike anything but wasn’t that impressed overall
Kinda forgettable, thought I Recognized one song but not sure
Good single but the rest grated on my nerves.
Very listenable but just a wee bit dull
Took me back to the uni days. Was a nice reminder and they mostly hold up.
Take Me Out is like one of the best songs of the 2000s and I love This Fire too...but none of the album tracks here even come close to the singles.
Top tracks - Jacqueline - take me out - this fire - come on home - -
Bra musik... dåliga lyrics
It’s fine.
Some bangers but somehow lost its pop after the naughties
#1, #3, #8
Album #2 glad to have a short album after 75 minutes of bob dylan yesterday. i feel like on a different day i'd like this more, take me out burned its way into my brain when i was little and the album's gayer than i expected, but i'm just not feeling it today, you know? so i'm waffling between 3 and 4 stars. i wish there was a 3.5 rating. i just don't get why this album's HERE. take me out is a great single and the album's not BAD, but was it historically important? people keep talking about "is this it" so this isn't the only post-punk album on the list. maybe if i was there in 2004 it'd be clearer. if i was a teen girl i'd probably give this a 5, the lyrics feel like pop punk even if the instruments don't quite. it'd also be a great soundtrack. someone else said all the songs are pretty similar (i know i shouldn't have looked up someone else's reviews before finishing my own but sue me). i agree and it's a change from blonde on blonde where even if some of them SOUNDED similar, the themes were different enough to make them distinct. here, if you listen to take me out, michael and dark of the matinee you might want the rest, but do you NEED the rest?
Some bangers, unlikely to revisit. Beatles meets Muse. 3/5
Good songs but I've heard this type of music before.
There is a lot of good stuff going on here, but it gets a little repetitive. Most of the songs sound too similar, but at least they are good. 3.5/5 Might listen again
Good, v 2000's
I didn’t realize I knew take me out. Big fan.
Really good beyond the hits. Not your standard 2000s alternative rock album, does a good job of changing the pace and almost including more ballad type songs. 3.5 stars
Puh, leider mittlerweile eher nervig für mich…ist wohl sehr Stimmungsabhängig. Tatsächlich aber trotzdem 3 Nostalgiepunkte!
I lost this album after listening to it a lot as a teenager. It sounds too much like pop-music for me to embrace it fully. But I have to admit that almost every song is super catchy.
Great toe tapping rock at the start flags for me at the end. Some amazing singles though.
I didn't hate it and it didn't drag too much, but it wasn't anything special. Very middle of the road, like something that would sound good with a small crowd in an after hours club maybe. Going to give it 3 stars.
Good indie album! Great to see these guys in a festival slot. This album is a good starting point and probably some of their strongest material! 7,5 out of 10
Fun throwback! Consistant theme running through the whole album
sweet
Didn’t have much time for FF at all when this first came out. Unfairly put them in the same bracket as other dross that was in those ‘indie landfill’ circles, but as time went on I realised how these are more special than their peers. Still wouldn’t say I’m a fan, even after revisiting this now, but it’s certainly not poor by any standards. Some interesting guitar riffs which sets it apart, and you can tell they are more substance over style, unlike some of their peers. It does sound very mid-00s, but from memory these were one of the bands that kickstarted that. I hated most of that scene, but I won’t hold it against these. Especially given the singer is a Sunderland fan. Wont ever top the work they did with Sparks as FFS. Hell of a record that. Highlights: Tell Her Tonight, Aug Achse, This Fire
As the kids say these days, this was a very "mid" album. There are some interesting guitar riffs and the highlight tracks are great but there isn't much substance to the album. Luckily with it's 38min runtime it doesn't stick around for too long. Highlights: Jacqueline Take Me Out The Dark of the Matinée
I remember when this was released, I definitely didn't think much of it at the time and it wasn't popular with my mates. It's better than that, however still doesn't quite do it for me. Some great riffs though. I think it's the singer that I'm not sold by. Take me out was played to death. Dark of the matinee too, but is the much better track imo. I don't think I'd be bothered by not hearing any of it again tbh but it isn't bad
Conocía de antes Take me out y Dark of the Matinée y me gustan bastante. Pero en general cansa muy rápido el álbum, el resto de canciones pasaron sin pena ni gloria.
It was good. Nothing much stood out
Rating System Notes: 1 star - Didn't enjoy listening at all. 2 stars - Fine to listen to but didn't really enjoy it. 3 stars - I enjoyed this album while it was on but wouldn't actively seek it out to listen again. 4 stars - I really enjoyed this album and would be happy to listen to it again. 5 stars - a classic album, one I will listen to a lot in future.
Hmm, nem rossz, de hallottam már jobb indie/alter albumot. 3,5
I wanted to love this album as much as I love the track Take Me Out, and while it wasn't a bad listen, it just blended into the background for me.
I’ve never been all that impressed with Franz Ferdinand. There are interesting points on the album, but the whole thing feels relatively small; as if there’s not much going on. It’s fun, yet repetitive. The vocals get old and the instrumentation doesn’t change up enough to distinguish the songs from themselves. Oh well. 3/5
Enjoyable, a bit like early arctic monkeys with less personality
Solid britpop album. A bit monotonous though and nothing too special. Opening tracks are pretty good but got bored around halfway through
3.4 I remember liking the album more when it came out. Pretty solid, could definitely use a remaster
Loved “Jacqueline” and “Take Me Out”. “Come on Home” and “40’” were good. Instrumentals were great, but album as a whole was meh.
Not bad, probably won’t listen to this album ever again though. Every song just seems like a different rendition of the hit song on the album.
Decent listen, not my cup of tea and the rest of the album doesnt match the energy of Take me out
Fairly good background which brings back some memories.
Good album. Take me out is a 8/10. Rest of the album sounds too much like that song without being better.
Some great songs on that album
Take Me Out really is a pretty damn good song. It’s not as dynamic or interesting as Arctic Monkey’s debut. Not as good as The Stroke or White Stripes imo. The disco beats get a little old on this one. Still really good but probably going to be a 3 for me.
Take Me Out was the only song I knew of theirs, and it's great. The rest of the album is OK.
Nostalgia 🥰
Fun listen
It was just alright for me.
3.5
Bom.
Was alright. I randomly heard Tell Her Tonight a day before listening to the album, and it kinda became my fave song from the album. Never knew what to associate with that name, now I know. + Tell Her Tonight + The Dark of the Matinée
Yeah, it's okay
The kind of album you still have your old CD somewhere because everyone bought it and it's fun to come back to it sometimes even if it's not a masterpiece. Feelgood stuff.
This album is fun and pretty consistent with one big highlight: Take me Out is a great song. But its mostly par for the course wake of The Strokes 00s indie-rock.
I enjoyed this album. I recognized the song Take me Out as a jam that I could sing along with. The musicians are talented and the singing is pretty good.
so far the vocals seem like theyre gonna get annoying second track is pretty good although i feel like so far none of these tracks have any real staying power and are quite forgetable after 10 seconds i have some small problems with it, mainly it just not being anything interesting to my ears even though i can recognize its good if theres any positive thing i can say about this album is that none of the songs over stay their welcome so im never overly tired of one song almost finished with it and wow its shocking how not memorable any of these songs are i like the closing track
Okay, not my favorite.
Ett album fullt av certified bangers! Som The Hives fast mer indie. Dansvänligt ungdomliga riffs. Rätt så simpelt album. Ingen låt som tar ut svängarna särskilt mycket, det gör bara vad som behövs. 'Take Me Out' behöver självklart ingen närmare förklaring. Bästa låt: Come On Home
These guys are from Glasgow. Kinda cool but I bet anyone who listens to these guys are pretentious af.
Pretty good but a bit hit and miss for me. My top 3: Take Me Out, This Fire, Darts of Pleasure
good album.
First album in this project! Riffs are good all over, if not a little samey towards the end. Never been a fan of the britpop style, wish Julian Casablancas was singing instead. The front half of the album is a lot better than the back half which makes it feel like a drag to finish. Rating - 5.8 Favs - Take Me Out - Cheating On You - The Dark Of The Matinée
Not my fav other than their single.
This was pleasant enough to listen to but not really my style, I don’t feel any urge to relisten to it again.
A trip down nostalgia lane, 'Take Me Out' is and always will be an absolute banger of a tune, the rest is decent enough, but I wouldn't call it essential listening.
ok but pretty tedious listening to every song back to back
I like it, I don’t love it.
Thought about giving an extra star because of the Terry Wogan namedrop, but it probably doesn't deserve *that* high praise.
I really think 2004 was a crap year for music. I remember listening to this album and thinking, is this all there is? In hindsight, it’s fine. It’s just not electrifying. If it came out in 2001 we’d have ignored it and FF would be a distant memory, like The Rakes. But yeah, it’s ok.
This album was definatly better compared to other britpop albums so far. It was more focused on the instrumentation than on I Should Coco for example. I did like a few songs but some were a little annoying... It wasn't a terrible listen and I would re-listen but it's not some kind of masterpiece. 3/5
good, groovy, but repetitive and bland
Decent album. I remember Take Me Out playing a lot when it came out; I guess it was good to finally listen to the rest of the album.
Personal Enjoyability (out of 40): 15 Consistency of Quality (out of 25): 17 Keeps Interest (out of 25): 5 Album Flow (out of 10): 8 Overall 45/100 ★★★ Quick Review: Overall not awful but the writing, tone and instrumentation is repetitive. Couple of bangers and 'Come On Home' slightly saves the monotonous second half.
Favourite song: Take Me Out
I always loved Take Me Out but somehow never got acquainted with the rest of this album. I don’t like any songs as much as that one. He’s got a great voice for this style.
I wish I could rate this one higher because it is better than most of my 3s but I think it just fits here. Some of the songs are really good but some just aren't.
This was slightly better than I expected and enjoyed it a little more then the Klaxons album which has a similar sound. Take Me Out and The Dark of the Matinee are catchy and I didn’t mind the opening track, the rest is hit and miss. I’m not sure it’s essential but it’s high energy and not a bad listen.
Fun brit-pop that joined the swarm of early 2000s energetic indie rock. Some fun vocalizations and interesting lyrical content make this an easy listen, albeit one where I didn't find much nourishment or lingering resonance.
2.5
2.5
The first half - regardless of the undeniable stomper that is Take Me Out - left me feeling rather listless and bored. It gave me a vague feeling of 'wow, I really wish I was listening to Arctic Monkeys instead'. The second half of the record comes into its own though, seeing the group lean more into their post-punk influences. The riffs get crunchier, the vocal delivery style more distinct and rough, the hooks much better. Stand outs (minus the obvious one) include Michael and Darts of Pleasure. A solid noughties rock effort.
Not a bad record by any means, but there are better options out there including Arctic Monkeys and The Strypes. Still some cool songs on here though.
Wel leuk
Echt veel leuker dan verwacht!! Maar ook weer niet zoveel over te zeggen?? Dus om die reden toch een 3
Not bad, but nothing memorable for me
Take Me Out is far and away a much catchier song than anything else on this album. I'm not surprised I hadn't heard any other songs from this album until now.
The baseline 3. Mildly enjoyable / just ok.
average rock album dont really know history but its not too bad. nothing revolutionary. fav song take me out. live but meaningful and chill but still rock. the dark of the manitee kinda good. intro really fun . come on home reminds me of gravity falls def my fav song
Got half way through, and did not feel the need to finish. "Take me out" is incredible and the obvious stand out, every other track felt boring by comparison.
Franz Ferdinand operate in energetic territory with the early Killers, though their debut is considerably less spiky than the sibling record. Some play with dynamics is always welcome, especially in an instrumentally uniform genre.
Folks love these guys. Lot of energy. It doesn't tickle the \"love it\" bits of my brain, though.
Cees zal dit album wel een 5 geven? Op mij is dit soort muziek nooit blijven plakken. Het is wel aardig hoor, de heren rocken lekker een potje voor de vuist weg, maar niets heeft echt attentiewaarde. Sorry mensen.
21st century Kinks
Solid pop rock
I only liked a few songs on the album when it came out and I still feel the same today.
Mid but good
Tyckte om detta
Take Me Out is a fantastic song. The rest of the album isn’t as strong, but it was an enjoyable listen. I liked the Matinee song. Franz Ferdinand always gets mixed up in my mind with other bands that came out around the same time, like the Postal Service, death cab, Travis, Keane, Snow Patrol, etc.
I vaguely knew this band before today. Definitely recall they got big around the time Adler was born. Great band name and excellent album cover design. Their drum game is strong. I enjoyed this listen but I don't think I'd reach for FF on my own.
One of the highlights of landfill indie. Great vibe throughout and obviously take me out is magnificent. Very strong 3.5
probably a 3.1 for me, quintessential indie music and a staple indie album
Some brilliant tracks on here but it does get quite stale. I once saw them play live but it was at an NME event so they didn't play long. It was like a firecracker of energy and I think that's how this band are best enjoyed.
Okay album, can’t say it’s bad, but not particularly good. The guitar riffs sound great and pretty much every song is full of energy, with take me out being the highlight. The album has a very consistent sound that can make every song very similar, but it’s very efficient with its 39 minute runtime. Quick and catchy, but nothing particularly special to set it apart from other indie rock records
3.5 - A timepiece of that early-aughts surge in Strokes-adjacent bands that were high-energy, danceable and hard rocking (see also the Killers, Kings of Leon) . Invariably comprised of attractive dudes wearing expensive leather racer jackets. Mostly this record sounds like palatable playlist fodder.
No you girls is a banger
Meh....all songs blend together. Bland dance music. Distinct style. Weak three, strong two.
Very pop, pretty good. I enjoyed the album more than the song.
Classic, but not fond of it as I used to be.
Great closing track. Love this band’s sound, but was a little surprised I didn’t love this album more than I did.
The drums sound great. The whole album gets a little too long on one curled-lip so I’ll keep the singles and leave the rest.
very rock so 2000s Scottish Strokes??? sign me up
Take me out carries the album, the rest sounds like the same song 10 times over and over.
I remember this coming out and what a stir it made. Take me out is still great but the rest is a lil middle of the road now.
My best friend listened to this album SO much when it came out that I went from loving it to being so familiar with it the style became annoying. Its totally subjective but I have so much trouble listening to an album I could not avoid. It likely deserves better but the highest I'll go is three. Jon shouldn't have hyperfixated it on it in middle school!!
Didn't do it for me
Pretty good, this was an enjoyable listen. Simple and to the point, but at the same time fun, this band has a very distinct and recognizable style, evidenced by the multiple hit singles that came from this record. My most significant criticism is that the album almost blends together barring a few singles. It almost felt like a giant mesh of one big song making repeated listenings exhausting.
Still not a huge fan but the cyberpunk theme song goes hard
okay, could get used to it, but no desire to listen again
Good
At times a great album, at other times it sounds like the guy from Weebls Stuff has turned his hand to proper music.
4 or possibly even a 5 around 15 years ago. To reparative now.
I connected with this album less than I expected. A lot of the individual sounds are excellent, I love the guitar tones, I love some of the drum fills. Sometimes those things just didn't come together in a way I got into.
High watermark Indie album that holds up quite well. Swaggering, energetic, well-made music. Fave Songs: Take Me Out, Cheating on You, This Fire, Auf Achse, The Dark of the Matinée
Art indie, mielenkiintoinen kuunteluhetki. paljon indie-elementtejä joista en historiallisesti ole pitänyt, mutta tässä tykkään? mieliala moment. kertsit pelastaa... helposti voi lauleskella mukana... the dark of the matinee
Another one that’s just here for a single song. Take me out is good but the rest kind of sounds generic.
A pretty standard mid-00's indie rock album. "Take Me Out" is a great lead single, but since it's the most iconic and appears early in the tracklisting, it sort of sets the bar high. The rest of the album is all more or less the same musically. Poppy, fun bass and guitar lines, oddly sexual lyrics. It's as if it was a sort of post-punk revivalism that took place without the "talk-singing" that appears to be the trend among modern groups. It's an enjoyable, but rather passive listen.
3.5 I enjoyed it more than expected. Perhaps one of the better so-called "post punk revival" bands.
Never listened to the entire album, and didn't hate it.
better than I thought
Love the band, and some banger songs, i like the album but will not rate it highly, a bit too pop for my personal taste
Yep, feels like 2004 again. :-) Enjoyable rock, but not going to blow anyone's minds, most likely.
Solid but not amazing 7/10.
Decent
3.5
Already listened
The post-The-Strokes shuffle beat got a little tired by the end, ditto for the vocal effect. Overall the album holds up really well though, Take Me Out and The Dark Of The Matinée esp.
Interesting to hear the album behind the hit - and to hear what that hit borrowed from the Led Zeppelin song Trampled Underfoot.
Couple of very forgettable tracks on the album. Listening back to it really made me wonder how it became such a hit. Also, first time I actually paid any real attention to take me out, and realised all the allusions to war/shooting - who knew it was inspired by Enemy at the Gates lol
favorite - tell her tonight, take me out, the dark of the matinee, auf achse, cheating on you least - michael, come on home
A few good songs but nothing really catchy.
Like the hits, not so fussed on the rest
Eyes burning the way through me Overwhelm, destroying so sweetly Now there is a fire within me A fire that burns 3/5
Jangly. Poppy. Not something I’d search out on my own. But not a bad listen. Just not my cup. 3/5
There is a style to this music - it’s not guitar based as such. More rhythmic. Drum and bass heavy. I’m not too sure whether to like it or not. It seems there are one or two songs which are anthemic and instantly familiar. But the rest not so. And that’s the thing: the album doesn’t do enough as an album in the 38:00 minutes it gave itself.
Solid album.
Solid album. Might not be something I would rush out to buy but has plenty of toe tappers. I felt that by todays standards the sound is a little sparse in layering. Enjoyed all the songs though, Dark of the Matinee, Auf Achse, and Come On Home in particular
Generally enjoyed it.
I probably won't remember having listened to this, but it wasn't unpleasant. Bonus points for the song that sounds like that one tiktok audio and for Auf Achse being relatable
classic
It's alright. I like the sound their going for but for some reason the songs just dont particularly interest me.
Dance-rock-ey. Recognized "Take Me Out". Groovy, but nothing that stands out too much (instrumentals or vocals)
Wasn’t a huge fan. Liked a few songs but didn’t like most of it.
It's a good album, with some cool aspects - the guitar lines are thoughtful and it's a fun brand of danceable indie rock. It's not gonna blow anyone's mind, but it's solid
Interesting album
I get the impression that they're putting on a front, and the front is a persona of the kind of person that you want to punch in the face. Looking past that, the songs are catchy and I understand why they got radio play.
I found this fairly annoying overall but 3 stars for Guitar Hero.
Some nice tracks but a bit too one-dimensional and formulaic for my tastes. Good stuff though, this was hugely popular for the time.
Better than I expected. 3.5 tbh
3. Not bad, but there's nothing particularly special about this album to me either. The drum and bass motif got a bit repetitive, and while I enjoyed listening it just wasn't memorable.
No longer in the book.
Really good. Feels a little generic now but that's really because other bands used this sound to death in the mid 2000s.
7,5/10
I loved this era in rock, when groups like The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Jet, Wolfmother, and the Arctic Monkeys were aggressively blasting fuzzed-out, syncopated songs that you could barely resist the urge to get up and dance to. I mean, how many rock songs have you heard that are as danceable as 'Take Me Out' or 'This Fire'!?
Solid, but unremarkable.
ok
Good, clean fun.
Nice indie rock songs but not really that special compared to other indierock bands
Really enjoyed the full album. 3.5 stars
Cool early 2000s album.
This is pretty good indie/arty rock that stood out (briefly) when it came out. Not sure why it makes the list though.
Sounds a lot like the Killers meeting the Talking Heads. The single is the clear highlight here. What happened to this band? Also the Dark of Matine sounds like Hava Nagila
This was fine, I didn't think its anything special. Take Me Out is a good one though.
Despite being their best one, this art school stuff is not ageing well
Take Me Out is the clear hit here. The other songs are far from as memorable and don't have the licks. This stuff is pretty good though - Very listenable with crisp vocals. Musically reminds me of Daft Punk.
Compared to other bands of their genre and era, Franz Ferdinand has a recognizable sound, which is a good thing, but at the same time, something about it is frankly more than a bit annoying to me. Their tracks seem to work best for me when listened to singularly and relatively infrequently. The Dark Of The Matinée, This Fire, and 40' might be my favourite songs on the album.
Has some good song, but I personally don’t really like the singers voice.
I liked this more when it came out. It didn’t really catch my interest on re-listen. Not bad, actually quite good, but it’s lost its newness.
Classic indie rock album made one of the best indie rock songs out there.
3.5
Ok
I knew more of these than I remembered. I'm not huge into this style but these are quite infectious songs
A very proper sound and production, but the repetitiveness of the songs and the similar drumming makes the album bland with no real highs or lows.
5/10 Highlights: Jacqueline Michael Come on home
Already heard this one.
It was alright
Je pensais trouver ça horrible alors que c'est pas mal du tout
Leuuuk
Leuk plaatje, vooral die single met die vette hoek erin natuurlijk!
Cool, lekker catchy!
Oh man, what a great blast from the past. The album as a whole is a banger, and a fun upbeat listen. Outside of “Take Me Out”, the songs are all worth a listen, even if they sometimes weren’t as memorable as I remembered. Definitely worth a listen, despite any negativity that my review might put across. No regrets spending almost 40 mins listening to this this morning to up the energy at work.
Pretty good pop rock album, just nothing to get overly excited about, I listen to it a bunch when it came out then quickly forgot about it. Take Me Out was s fun song to play on Rock Band. 3.5
Solid record, and a fun live act, I saw them for this tour. The disco bass line and drum gets a bit repetitive (I know, it’s bass…), but the lyrics are good and there are no clunkers.
Нормальный альбом с небольшим количеством бэнгеров. Слушать было легко
Good album but doesnt stand the test of time
I was ready to like this but came away disappointed. The instrumentals are pretty good but the vocals got a little annoying and repetitive. Take Me Out is a great song, the rest of the album just couldn’t live up to the strength of that.
Best Song: The Dark of the Matinee. I enjoyed the dynamic volume/tempo. Worst Song: Tell Her Tonight. The vocals sound raw in a bad way. Overall: Apart from the few (by now massively overplayed) hits, this feels pretty forgettable. It sounds a bit like a mix of LCD Soundsystem and the Arctic Monkeys, but is inferior to both. Not bad, but just the kind of nondescript music you hear during breaks at a sports arena.
Not my bag
Fine Alt rock / modern brit pop
Fun album but Take Me Out is the obvious banger. Actually thought it was by the killers. Apparently both bands started around the same time.
Patchy but occasionally brilliant.
Klassetur på barneskolen. Denne på repeat på kassett. Kjøpte den brukt på vinyl til 40,-. Verdt det. A-siden er sterk, B-siden svak. 0,5 stjerne ekstra pga nostalgi.
Heavily Gang of Four influenced album, which always sounds fine to me, but where GoF's albums are still timeless, FF did not really stood the test of time: the songs (even the singles) turned out to be quite a bit less strong than they were in my memory. Still a solid album, miles better than the other GoF derivatives from that time..
Still the same response as when it was first released. It sounded okay, with some nice guitar work, but ultimately it did not really feel that special to me.
I was genuinely surprised that this album had made the list. There's nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn't seem to have enough about it to make a list of albums you need to hear. It's not even the bands best album. It's fine. It's ok.
Exactly as I would expect a Franz Ferdinand album to sound. Feel like I recognised half the songs despite never having listened to it before. Definitely the sound of an era.
Better than average art-rock from the early 2000s. Heavily disco-influenced drumming makes this more dance-able than most. Arrangements are bit more inventive than most (Take Me Out is a particularly good example of this). But was a lot of the praise a result of the last of the huge major label promotion budgets? I don't hear this band talked about much any more. I hope they invested their money wisely, and are comfortably resting on their laurels.
All new to me. I liked it for the most part. Nice little edge to what they do yet it's still nice pop (not in the negative sense of the word).
Fun music, first time I've heard this band, not sure, I'll need to listen again and to some of their other music. Maybe I'm just not a punk person.
A few fun songs make this enjoyable most of the way through.
Play the chonky Talking Heads/Television chords to death. Catchy and accessible but can grate after about 6 songs
Some good riffs but the melodies don't match up. Take Me Out is great - it's just a shame Led Zeppelin wrote it first (Trampled Underfoot)!
Okay
Meh. At first listen these guys sound promising. But they just don't sound real. A little too contrived and calculated. They remind me of the Strokes in that regard. Kids trying to sound like someone from their big brother's record collection.
Beetje verouderd album maar zeker niet slecht
Good album with a few catchy tunes, I listened to it a lot back in the day.
Enjoyable
Fínasta plata, en hefur ekki elst jafn vel og sumar eldri plötur.. ef það meikar sens. Þetta er svona djúpsteikta útgáfan af Strokes
I don't know what happened to Franz Ferdinand after this album, it's like they became a totally different, and much less interesting, band. There are some great catchy songs on this album, many of which used to set the dancefloor alight in rock clubs. They had their own unique sound, tons of enthusiasm, and this album is the result of that positivity. But then, after this... it's a shame really.
When the tempo picks up half a min into the album it gets the toes tapping. It's decent and the single is good but there is not enough excitement to keep my interest.
Good
Enjoyable, it has that one famous song on it but a fair few other decent tracks too.
ok makker
Take me out (!) post punk, dance rock, rimelig fedt
Overall good album had some inconsistent tracks wish there was more acoustic tracks like the intro. A good listen and a few bangers but now sure if I will realisten to it
Well, that was a damn sight better than I thought it would be.
Na tle całości wyróżniają się najpierw Jacqueline solidnym intro a potem Take Me Out, całą swoją istotą - jeden z lepszych bangerów dekady. Dalej niestety wkraczamy w obszar niewielkich różnic i zamazanych granic - miłe zaskoczenie z Auf Achse, niemiłe z Darts of Pleasure, nic specjalngo. Wokal o ile przyjemny jest ograniczany przez niezainspirowane teksty. O ile nie miałbym obiekcji do słyszenia Franz Ferdinand w tle co jakiś czas, na liście 1001 najlepszych sam bym go nie umieścił. 3/5, bliżej 4 niż 2 głównie z uwagi na trzy kawałki wyróżniające się pozytywnie w Jackqueline, Auf Achse i oczywiście Take Me Out.
Przyjemny wokal, przyjemne dźwięki. Poza Take Me Out, nic dla mnie się nie wyróżnia, ale skłonny jestem posłuchać całego albumu jeszcze raz w przyszłości, wpada w ucho. (3.5)
I wouldn't go so far as to say it's nothing to write home about - after all this album gave us one of the greatest bangers of the decade. However, apart from "Take me out" and a few honorable mentions the rest of the set seems unremarkable and boring. Worth knowing, but not sure whether I would put it on the 1001 greatest list myself. PS. If half-stars were accepted, this album would receive 3,5 stars.
Radosny album, kilka fajnych piosenek. Take me out to absolutny banger. Jacqueline i Rhe dark of the matinee też całkiem spoko, reszta przeciętna. 3.5/5
