Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Noisy psychedelic stuff - boring and goes nowhere, and I like noisy psychedelic ambient nonsense! As it got to the end of the original album (no way I'd sit through another hour+ of extra...) I was actually kind of offended by how every single repetitive song stuck to only one dynamic/tempo/mood and there was no tension and release - then they had the gall to call for "revolution" and haughtily chat to god as if they've got something to say. Hawkwind, it ain't....
not great
Couldn’t really get into any of the songs. Weird vibes. The only one I would probably listen to again is Come Down Softly To My Soul, and I also didn’t hate Lord Can You Hear Me. Suicide was 10 minutes of the same riff over and over again.
This album is neither inspirational nor aspirational. It is "respirational," meaning at times it sucks and at other times it blows.
Too boring to even sleep to
To be used only as very distant background music if you can’t find anything else and silence bothers you.
Of the time but not of my taste
Hard to listen to, I'd rather listen to silence. Overdid the alternating two notes a few songs in the album but they kept going with it. The longer songs are the repetition of a few-second-long segment a hundred times over. Waste of time. 2/10
1/5 - A scrapbook of noise in many formats. I can imagine some have drug-induced nostalgia for this and think back to college days of pondering the universe to the background din of what sounds like a broken piece of machinery. This could only be worse if Rufus Wainwright sang on top of it.
All these "songs" just repeat the same thing for 3 to 11 (!!!) minutes without leading up to anything interesting. What a waste of my time.
Despite its daring moves and unique sound, I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. I just really didn’t like the album.
It’s cool sounding
Garage
1/5
If they were playing with fire, they didn't do it properly otherwise they'd have burnt the recording studio down so that we wouldn't have to listen to this monotonous, boring and over-long offering.
n gostei ..
Not for me.
I did not listen for 2 hours
Why? This was so boring I couldn’t get thru a single song without skipping to the next one. This might appeal as background music but I can sit around and pay attention to these songs.
Was bored at the start and then it just got worse. It felt meandering and I was glad when it was finished honestly. Strong 1 star.
Wish I had these guys patience. Couldn’t get through it all
This was poor. Never really got going. At times hinting at a low-rent poor Hawkwind and at others invoking Sonic Youth For Beginners, this has no conviction or substance at all. I was thinking “why?” more than anything, but not in a good way. Maybe I’m completely missing the point, as I’ve heard the name previously but never their music. Completely baffled why this album would be ranked here. Student gig night, £1 for a pint of watered down lager. Use of strobe light essential.
I did not like this. It was slow. Boring. Suicide was especially egregious. Im more accustomed to the psychedelic sort of vibe working better in a rock styling and I think it does work better in that genre. This was a chore to get through.
Very disappointing. Just ambient noise in places
Time consuming and tiresome. And annoying at times. Several times.
This is a like a big nothing burger. Xanax in music form. I was annoyed from track 1 and continued to be until the end.
I will just say this is very much not my cup of tea
no disrespect to spacemen 3 but there’s being experimental and then there’s just chucking a bunch of sounds together and saying “hey, fuck it that’ll do”, lead singer is nothing special and the record is mixed pretty terribly even for 1989. wouldn’t recommend at all.
Spaceman 1
I know this one’s divisive and I really hoped I’d like it because I do like what I’ve heard of Spiritualized but god this is so shit it’s actually making me feel angry?? It’s just a load of noodling, like why am I listening to this? It feels like it should be from the 60s, but like all the shittiest most rambling NOTHING-y stuff from that decade. The ONLY good thing I’ll say is that there are slivers and bits of songs that feel like they could have turned into something interesting. But they just don’t. Also the last song feels like a sort of lullaby/reward for getting through everything that came before it. I’m not listening past the original 9 songs. Honestly fuck this.
Monotonously repetitive. Did not enjoy
I don't know if I would actually call this music. It's very monotonous. Maybe if I had been on LSD or some psychedelic mushrooms I would have had a different experience. However, I wasn't high, so I want my 46 minutes back.
This attempt at music is just bad. There is nothing enjoyable about this unless you're really into a bass player hitting one low, droning note endlessly. I hope I never stumble across this again. EVER.
Nudne i długie. 1/5
I felt like I was gonna fall asleep then someone would take a power drill to my ears for like 10 min, then let me fall asleep again. I could count on 2 fingers the amount of stuff in this album I liked. Maybe this is what tinnitus feels like
Might have caught me in a mood - really dull. Got up to vacuum, forgot the music was still on. I prefer listening to my 10 minute rain noise loop I use to drown out the neighbours.
Rambly guitar, morphing into a wall of distortion at times
Snoozemen 3
Numbered band names are dumb. You have to be really good to overcome that.
Thoroughly dull and uninspired. No talent was involved in the making of this album.
2 hours of droning. That's what there is here. It's fucking bullshit.
world's worst psychedelic rock album
Dreadful - I can only assume the band’s family and friends felt sorry for them and bought multiple copies to get it on this list. That or they paid the judging panel.
I am so deeply offended by the addition of this album to the list that I almost quit this project. These are not the best albums, they’re just albums that some British dudes like I guess? This album sucked. The singing, musicianship, the droning, the mixing— all so so terrible I can’t believe it. Even with “So Hot” after spending all the previous time being so annoyed by what I’ve heard it was ok, then he starts singing and I’m mad as hell again
Didn’t really listen to it, it did not capture me, but again a surprise to see it was released 33–36 years ago
Bit bland
I just found this irritating and felt like it was trying to irritate me
Well - that’s clearly on the wrong list. This album should be in 1000 albums that will make you want to die list. I found the original version with 9 tracks, because 2 hours of this crap really would make you suicidal. I couldn’t get through more than half of any of the first 8 tracks because frankly they’re not music, just noise and some Emo mumbling. The ninth track I thought briefly might actually have a melody, but alas just 5 chords played over and over and over, while mister depressing talked over it. There are worse albums, but not many.
Boring…
It's not that I think this isn't for me, it's that I think it's actively bad. Saying it's shoegaze played by elementary school kids picking up instruments for the first time would be an insult to kids learning instruments. There are no sound concepts, everything is thin, the vocals are barely uttered. Favorite track: I couldn't even finish the album
Nul
Meh
What is this album? Is it even listenable? Standout tracks: None.
Total snoozefest. This is what I think it would sound like if the band Suicide sucked
Ok kinda stinks. I was in denial about it but this is a total snooze fest. Way more boring than I remember it being. I thought I liked this band? You really don't have to listen to this before you die.
Man, this is way out there. Far out even. Psychedelic/space rock is strange enough, but the fact that this album was released in 1989 is even stranger. Too late to the party? Or perhaps too early for the rest of the world to comprehend? In any case, this all borders on being classified as shoegaze as well due to the album's general ambient/noisy vibe. I tend to see it as noise for the purpose of being noisy, though. Mix that with some LSD, and you get this album I guess. Maybe some reached enlightenment upon listening to this, but I did not. What's the opposite of enlightenment?
1.44
Garbage. No reason for this to be on any list other than biggest waste of time list.
Insufrible, y eso que me gustaba el pop inglés de los 80 de este estilo, todo lo que salía de NME y similares y luego me convertí en devoto del sonido Manchester, pero eso ha sido muy aburrido. 1 estrella.
The problem I have with Shoegaze is that when picks up in intensity and I think that the song is going to get better, it just winds up going nowhere. That’s the problem I have listening to this and it made me angry. All that potential build up with no release.
Sounds like the product of a psychological experiment exploring whether the developmentally disabled possess the ability to reproduce music. Conclusion: they do not.
Trash
The Good: We’ve been warned that we are playing with Fire… The Bad: That we still aren’t sure who the third spaceman is… The Ugly: That aliens still don’t know how to communicate with us as their grammar sucks; it is 3 Spacemen First song made me think “Shit”, second song made me listen a little more attentively, song 3 (see what I did there!!???!?!) made me think “Shit” again… There was a song that I actually liked, but by the time I was over 1 hour into this experiment of sound, I had totally forgotten about it. Is there a reason that I have to listen to a 2 hour album of noise? Is there something in the noise which will make me see the light? Is there something which Spacemen 3 want me to know except that I’ve lost time and a couple of hairs today? I am reaching 30% on this musical journey, and my patience is starting to wear thin, or my ears are starting to become too critical. Where I used to listen to music at least 4 hours a day, I am finding that this is now becoming limited to the album of the day, and then 1 album from my 5* list just to wash away the bad taste in my mouth. Here’s to my crossed fingers hopen for a stellar album today!
I tried. It all sounds the same. The droning was driving me around the bend. Can't do it.
Kinda like the vibe, would need better lyrics for me to want to keep any songs
Sometimes too quiet, sometimes too loud
Kedelig psykrock, baggrundsmusikvibes
When I was a teenager getting high for the first time, I'd record 20 minute jams on one chord, being amazed at how deep and psychedelic the sounds were. Then I'd cover up, listen back, and realise it was just repetitive drones that didn't go anywhere. That's what this sounds like. Mumbling lyrics ripped off of Dylan and Patti Smith over boring loopy patterns just bored me to tears. The version I listened to had a live recording of Suicide which gave me some idea that they might have been interesting as a live act, where sheer volume may play a part - but as an album, this sounds worse than some bands 4 track demos. Utter, utter trash. Not even irritating enough to be interesting.
I don’t know what these guys are playing with, but it’s certainly not fire. I found this to be way too dull and actually dozed off listening to this. I’m sure it’s enhanced by drugs, but that stage of my life is behind me.
Two discs and 2 hours? How about no? Oh thank the heavens, the second disc is part of a reissue. I will not be listening to that. Also fuck shoegaze
Absolutely not, brother. Are these songs? Or, like, LaCroix water-style impressions of songs?
Jeg var ikke klar over at man kunne lave eksperimental musik som var så fantasiløst og kedeligt
Not extremely high on how psychedelic this one is. Really enjoyed just one track being revolution. I want to give it an 2 but even with that song I’ve got to stay 1. Otherwise droned on. Surprised this came out in 89. I did NOT listen to the whole album as an fyi for my rating.
really how did this make it in the list
Un álbum aburrido, inconsistente, inerte, y con temas que son solo una introducción larga. Primer calificación de 1 estrella que doy. Nota: 1.4
One note per song. Not chord, one NOTE.
Bland
Absolutely not.
Another one of those ones where I wish someone would tell the dude who made this list that every obscure, weirdo British rock band he liked when he was 14 isn’t worthy of sharing with the world.
There's a few songs I like from Spacemen 3, but none of them are in this album. I also have no interest whatsoever in listening to this in full.
Pretty droning. Not really sure what I'm meant to find in here. The whole album feels pointless and easy to ignore. I have no idea why this made the list.
This is kind of nothing. Most people given a simple looping software, could re create a close approximation of this. Reminds me of The Doors, it could trick you into thinking there is sustenance when it's empty. It did help me zone out during an unpleasant drive.
Couldn’t even make it through Disc 1
Not great
I don’t need this, nor do I want it.
Boring, I fail to see why this was included in a list of 1001 albums to listen to
Negative
Awful
It took 2 people to make this? It sounds like an album of the weird interlude songs on an album. I did not like this
Can you imagine just writing the beginnings of songs and never finishing them
Wank.
2.5/10
If you like it, good for you. I don't! It shouldn't be on this list.
Just because you learnt guitar when you were 10 and you're mate has a Casio keyboard in the cupboard, doesn't mean you should record an album.
Did not like this at all. Boring songs, can barely hear lyrics, just random feedback on the guitar. Just crap. 1/5
dra åt skogen
There's a song on this album about unaliving yourself. You'll feel like it when you get there. Didn't make it to disc 2 of "extras" because who needs more of this dross.
This sucks.
1.5 Bad Bad Not Good. Although Revolution was a good tune
Didn’t enjoy
Almost unlistenable.
Booooooorrrrrrring Just like this list. Enough with the trite, repetitive electronic music. Some of these songs started out with promise, just to disappoint. I thought Suicide was going to be good. The it made me want to kill myself. Spacemen 3 just suck and this album is no exception
Six songs in and I’m tapped out. This is hilariously boring. For a moment it seemed like “I Believe It” was going to erupt into something interesting, but they swerved hard around that possibility and went right back to boring town.
Not a fan of this one. I found it to be boring, mediocre, and forgettable. I am also not a fan of overly distorted guitar so it also loses points for that.
Very very weird... sounds wrong. Broken record? Intentional?
Both boring and actively bad. Way too long. I now dread any album that comes up that's "psychedelic" - I can only assume the genre refers to music you have to be on drugs to find enjoyable
When this first popped up I got exconly because my wife wouldn't insist I waited for her to listen to it (up to 2 weeks later lol) then read some reviews and some users made this sound so incredibly up my alley that I paused and almost waited....then I decided to sample and oh noy i knew I was safe to play the whole awful thing. I suffered through this so you don't have to
Boring and droning. Somehow combines the monotony of EDM with rock music. Nothing noteworthy, and entirely skippable
For some reason I thought this would be good in Spiritualised way, but it wasn't. 1
It’s just noise. And not the kind type.
1 bad
Listening to this, I can see I’ve been too harsh on some of the recent choices. Those others were more the competent musicians. These guys…this repetitive droning. A song might start out promising but don’t worry—they’ll repeat it till you’re ready to tear your ears off. This music could be utilized for torture by the government.
Ok
Психоделия, именно такая которая мне не очень нравится. Похоже на 1ый альбом hawkwind, который мне будет снится в кошмарах
I put this on expecting hip hop, alas I was disappointed and out it off after a few boring tracks
This is one hard listen without hallucinogens at the ready
Not for me
What a big pile of … nothing
Album = bad
Klarte ikke høre ferdig, veldig kjedelig. Høyt potensiale på mange av sangene, men skjedde ingenting. Overall: 3/10
Waste of my time.
Ei vaan jaksanu kuunnella kokonaan.
I think this should have been called throw in the fire since that’s where this album belongs. Spacemen 3 also equally dumb name. This album was not good, not enjoyable, and not for me. 2.0/10
WTF?!?!? I had to skip songs because they are LITERALLY painful to listen to! Several minutes later... I can't even with this album. Had to shut it off. It's just excruciating noise!
Musiikkia jonka tahtiin säveltää omia kappaleita - ei tule tielle.
Garbage.
Forgettable noise.
Boring. Did not finish.
Honey 2 Come Down Softly to My Soul 1.8 How Does It Feel? 1.2 I Believe It 1.4 Revolution 2.3 Let Me Down Gently 1.1 So Hot (Wash Away All of My Tears) 1.3 Suicide 1 Lord Can You Hear Me? 1.2 Score: 1.477777778
A looooot of noise
psychadelic, new age, not mine!
So repetitive. When a song starts, you think oh this one might be good, but it never changes. So repetitive. Same beat, same chords. So repetitive. I don't care about their revolution. So repetitive. This album barely even has a Wikipedia article. So repetitive.
im so fckng confused wtf is going on. i dont get it. this is not for me . im not at an age where i would GET this i guess so idk nvmd lol. whole lotta noise and for what was i supposed to T*KE something before listening to this one..? where are the directions *looks in the trash for what the package says* im kidding its not tHat bad. but it is
Noisy and unenjoyable, for me.
So far, Revolution is the only song that has caught my attention, but even that managed to lose it by the end. I see how this could have influenced some bands, but honestly, it sounds derivative of several other bands and their friends hyped them up a bit to help them out.
I would like to request a refund for the time I spent listening to this!
Started out boring and got annoying fast
Highlights: "Suicide" This album's reputation as a "godfather of shoegaze" explains a lot. A fake genre hallucinated by people who don't know what effects are, describing their own incomprehension of hardware, the push of a button, as a musical accomplishment. I do believe that you could give a random person an amp and a couple modulators and get this quality. One of the tracks in the middle really is just droning on a flanger. No reason to listen to this over anything else. Imagine if Suicide was stuck trying to be the Doors. Imagine if Jane's Addiction had no energy. Imagine if Lou Reed had nothing to say.
I left the room to wash my hands and when I came back they were still playing the same note.
Gosh I feel like the past three albums have been similar? I just feel like I’m stuck in a loop of albums that sound unfinished and just bad. This album in particular was just so distasteful. It honestly brought nothing to me and I wouldn’t listen again.
I got as far as the track "Suicide" but didn't finish because i killed myself half way through so I could spare myself any more. Mission Accomplished, Spacemen... "How Does It Feel" is one of the most hilariously-terrible mopey/shoegazey songs we've had in over 2 years. I can almost picture exactly the college scene - walking into a darkened room, this playing (on cassette) with 7 people sprawled out across the floor barely moving. That track in particular has a lot of "GET ON WITH IT ALREADY" to it even within a minute. I love long songs when done right - this was not. And .... ok gloves off, this actually bothers me - like - make an effort already? This album gets exponentially worse and worse - I'd thought after the first track or 2 that this had some potential but it all plays out like one big fking joke. "Revolution" - really? one chord - spoken vocals - eh this is not my bag which I ordinarily can just appreciate and move on but this is actively offensive. Maybe the worst part for me is that some decent band from Bristol in 1985 probably got screwed out of releasing an album to the world because shit like this was pushed instead. 1 out of spite. 2/10 1 star. n.b. jfc of course .... FROM WIKI: "...the band drew inspiration from acts like the Stooges, the Velvet Underground, and Suicide..." ...a genuine triple-decker shit sandwich. It makes so much sense now.
Not for me I'm afraid. I'm OK with shoegaze, I'm OK with Prog but this is just a long and uninteresting ramble.
What did I just listen to
Heard of Spacemen 3, always got them confused with Spiritualized (Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space). This is pretty bad. Early shoegaze which has never been my thing as a genre, just sounds like some musicians got stoned and start a song then forget what they're doing. Suicide is the same two keyboard notes over and over for 11 minutes.
Weird. Really tried to enjoy it, but I could not. Sorry Spacemen.
Albums that mention being included in 1001 Albums you must hear before you die on their wikipedia blurb generally and ironically shouldn't be included in 1001 Albums you must hear before you die.
I enjoyed none of this album.
um's auf kasselänerisch zu sagen: homme nit, wumme nit, brumme nit
Annoy sounds "music" at it again. Why are there so many terrible albums like this and no truly excellent albums in so many other genres.
Not a hit with the family.
två timmar av oljud och helvete
Kunne ikke komme i gennem, næsten umuligt at høre på. Ikke plat ligesom cowboyder, men ikke min smag
Album 228 of 1001 Spacemen 3 - Playing with Fire Rating : 1 / 5 Mostly electronic stuff that just didn't hit the spot.
My husband had this album the day before me. At first I thought it was someone cutting their grass or pressure washing their car, it was that monotonous and annoying. Suffice today did not enjoy when I had it.
Clearly influential and you can hear the similarities to the likes of Spiritualized. I'm rating on my own enjoyment though, and it's boring. I got to the third track which lasts for 8 minutes and goes nowhere. Tedious
Started off strong and then devolved into a horrible new age wannabe
Yawn.
Vaag, psychedelische rock is niet mijn ding
Liked the start, quit after the distorted guitars began.
Drags on with the songs very little lyrics for songs that play a whole two minutes after it ends not good at all
wow another UK psychedelic rock from the 80s. woo.
Unenjoyable
Liked maybe, 1 song. Too much for me
Never heard of this band or album. Definitely not for me. Had to skip through songs. The first album on this list I couldn't make it through. 1/5
just noise
Spacemen 1
Some days I feel like this list is pranking me. Today is one of those days. I suppose it’s impressive that it’s both extremely uninteresting and also extremely irritating at the same time. Could be useful to scare pests out of your garden?
Damnit. I can see that this group was influential and groundbreaking but sweet Jesus - Monday is already hard enough without having to listen to 10min tracks of distorted guitar and mumbled lyrics.
Entirely inconsequential and bafflingly identity-free
not my vibe
Words escape me on this one.
Terribly dull
Que tipo de dr0ga a pessoa tem que tomar pra conseguir ouvir 2h disso?
Nope. This is not good. There are some genres of music that I do not understand how they became even slightly popular and this is one of them. Maybe it is because I never did any drugs. Haha.
Pretty boring and repetitive
The album is the definition of boredom.
Oh dear, soporific and not in a good way
This was not good. It was set of painful to listen to and put me in a terrible mood.
Not really much to note here
That was bad
Never heard of this band and for good reason. As someone who enjoys melodies, what a slog to get through. Maybe they were influential on others, but the authors including this while excluding so many black artists and women from this list reflects really poorly on them.
Mostly just ambient noise
To timer med forvrengte gitarer?
Somebody needs to teach this band what a chord change is.
Boring assault on the ears
Hated it. Awful crap. Sucked. Why are they making me listen to this tripe? I can't find any redeeming value whatever in this so called music. Pure torture to listen to. 0/10 do not recommend.
No idea what is this
Awful
Not quite.
No idea what this is but here are my predictions: - from the UK - electronica of some kind - goes for an hour or more Basically nailed it. From the UK, isn't strictly electronica but is primarily synth sounds, samples and noises etc. Goes for 2 hours and can GET FUCKED. Good god this was a whole lot of boring nothingness. 1/5.
I had never heard of this band, album and I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked play on the first track, Honey. I'm an hour in...and nothing has hooked me yet. It's lo-fi beats with boring, flat whispering layered over it. Where's the hits?! I had to turn it off. I couldn't even take it as "background noise".
Definitely nope.
Boring
Oh god, feels like a stoner asking "but how do you really feel man?" and dragging you down at a party when you just want to have fun.
horrible
I must have been tired when I looked at this cover at and thought I’d be listened to a band called Specimen 3. Clearly, I’ve forgotten how to read. I hadn’t heard of this band or this album until today so let’s see how it is. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Revolution Experimental music has always been somewhat hit and miss for me. If it’s too different to what I’m used to, I’ll often have a hard time listening to it. Well four minutes into track 3 (How Does It Feel) I had completely lost interest in this album. Track was was okay, but then it was all downhill from there. I can say it was interesting at times, but that isn’t to say I enjoyed it. If I woke up one morning without kneecaps, that would also be interesting but not very fun. I think that’s an accurate simile for this album. It’s the audio equivalent of unexplainably losing your kneecaps.
Pretty annoying. A few moments of "not bad" but never approaching enjoyable. A lot of the songs felt fragmented or unfinished. Not particularly interesting in any way.
Kinda ass
I have never heard of this band. With pretty much every track I feel as if I am waiting for the song to begin - as if it is unfinished. Good background music……I guess.
Not a 1000 list
No es para mí
Básicamente ruido, sin ton ni son.
I prefer songs that have more than one or two notes.
Terrible
The youtube link is all fucked. so I'm not going to get a clean run at this album. Though thats not a huge loss, three tracks in and its a big boring nothing burger so far. It lacks any apprechiable drive, or forward thrust. just sort of floating noodling. Then Revolution happens and the whole space thing is dissolved into something just as aimless but with rhythm. I don't think I have liked a single track thus far and its time for the 11 minute song Suicide. God, what a turd.
Boring
Not for me.
I really do not enjoy these long, repetitive, meandering tracks that don't build to anything.
honey is too static-y?? 1/5 started off solid tho not that great IMO maybe years of pop has ruined me lmao revolution is turning out to be good,,, again started off solid, the middle was shit, the ends v good so hot is good my fav from this album rn lord help me out has such amazing starting instrumentals,, okay now its too much production IMO, 2.1/5 che is good,,, okay its ruined now may the circle be unbroken is def my fav now. 4.3/5 any way that you want me (demo) is pretty good girl on fire (demo) is nice cool instruments
Dunno why but absolutely could not stand this. Didn't get through it. The audio equivalent of waiting for a drunk to get to the point, only for them to not have one.
Pretty chill 3 Nevermind it's really boring 2 Sounds like they forgot to tune their instruments. Ok this sucks, they even fucked up "May The Circle Be Unbroken". How. 1
This album is repetitive and boring. This album is the definition of insanity.
Couldn't finish it.
Couldn’t get into it.
If their intention was to make me feel physically ill for 1hr 59min then it's an easy five stars. Totally uninspired writing, taking themselves way too seriously and the fucking music itself is straight up headache inducing. Terrible album.
I feel like at times this album is supposed to be ambient and peaceful. But honestly a lot of the droning and nothing, into the spikes of noise just gave me fucking anxiety. I ended up feeling weirdly anxious throughout this whole album. I don't feel like I should hate it, but I really hated listening to it.
Grating psychedelica. Very dated (90s)
Dull, uninspired trash. Each song goes on for 8 mins too long. And the album outstays its welcome
No music there to review, just some noise
1/5 I think it's quite plain and at times annoying
Well, that was awful.
not good.
Soft sounds, more like soundtrack for a movie.
geen idee wat ik nu geluisterd heb
j'ai pas aimé ca point.
