Reviews (page 2 of 13)

it’s pretty good but nothing innovative. people speak fax when they say that it sounds exactly like Radiohead cuz it’s true. i liked “assassin” and “invincible”. HM: the cover reminds me of Breaking Bad

It's all true what they say about Muse. Their music is over-the-top, a bit cheesy, often too theatrical and overdone for its own good, and too hung up on early Radiohead. Just listen to most of the second half of this album to get example after example of this. But when they hit, they *hit*. Listen to Starlight, Map of the Problematique or Knights of Cydonia, and suddenly they manage to turn these exact weaknesses into their biggest strengths. If you've never experienced the fun of attempting Bellamy's gasping, quasi-operatic vocals at karaoke night, you don't know what you're missing. Besides, these guys obviously have some real chops, both in their playing and compositions; they just don't always succeed in employing them effectively. I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could.

Stand-out tracks: Take a Bow -although I'm not the biggest fan of the vocals, I like the steady instrumental progression through the song and the dramatic ending Supermassive Black Hole - a hit for a reason, this is without a doubt the best track on the album Map of the Porblematique City of Delusion - once again the vocals don't contribute much, but I like how energetic the track is with the various instrumental changes throughout Glorious - a powerful closer that feels appropriate for the album About half of the album was relatively enjoyable to listen to and the other half less so. Even some of the more popular tracks weren't as good to me (mainly Starlight and Knights of Cydonia). Sonically there is a lot of interesting stuff here, but I feel like some tracks try quite a bit to stand out , while others do the opposite. Rarely does a track hit the right balance. The vocals certainly don't help either as they feel a bit whiney and out of place at times. I would say overall it was an average listen.

Highlights: Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, Map of the Problematique, Assassin, Exo-Politics, Glorious I prefer it when Muse go for a heavier sound and I don't feel like there was a lot of that on this record. I guess I got that impression from the middle of the record which was a definite low-point. It's heavily carried by the iconic singles, and while the rest of the tracks aren't filler, they didn't strike me as much better than that. Mid tier alternative rock that has multiple better contemporaries. For instance Soldier's Poem and Hoodoo are just plain bad, while City of Delusion tries to go for the heavier sound but it misses something. Knights of Cydonia is supposed to be a classic and I have met people that recommended this record to me based on it alone, but I found the buildup to be way too long for my liking. The second half of the song does slap indeed, but that half is repetitive too. The song is a sandwich with nothing in the middle. A big problem for me were also the vocals - I just don't like the vocalist most of the time. And I also feel like Muse just has this unique formula of theirs that they just run to the ground. Quite often I ask myself "Why does this sound familiar?". When all is said and done I am sure I won't be returning to this space rock opera for some time.

synths, grand are they dissing george bush? grand guitars haunting lyrics layering synths for ear candy mixed very nicely plucky synths almost trap-like hi-hats? feels very polished deep ass digi subs drums mixed pretty well 3/5 material. pretty average stuff. mixed well.

This album had some good moments, but most of the songs either sounded too similar to each other or just didn’t hit that hard. It sounds like generic modern rock.

Muse has some really solid highs but it's just not a sound or style that translates to a few albums. Always a band that I'll appreciate their bangers but that's it.

Now I wanna go play baseball!

not sure actually

When the opening track began, I was all “Cool, this kind of sounds like Radiohead!”, but after awhile it all sounded pretty generic and highly formulaic. Supermassive Black Hole still rocks because of the baseball scene from Twilight— sorry not sorry.

My first impression is if Queen grew up listening to Radiohead.

At first I was going to rate this 4, but after thinking about it there isn’t a single notable song. I think it’s merely tolerable which gives the impression of it being good, but in reality it’s just Fine.

Trash, but inoffensive trash?

As per usual with Muse, I know it's actually quite good. But I can't take an album of them. It's too much. (This from a massive Wagner fan!) Loudness wars going on within the same track. And always those scales going up and down! Muse do bombast quite well at times. But only Queen ever made bombast effortless and fun. I saw Muse live once at the Rock Werchter festival and remember saying to my friends that they sounded like magma with bowel problems. I know that is perceived as A Good Thing in some parts, but I can't take 50 minutes of it. Case in point is Invisible, which is one of many that go from 'ooh, that sounds nice' to 'cor, is it over yet' faster than you can say 'again'. Stars (I'm in rather a good mood) are a half each for the excellent Starlight, the rocking Exo-Politics (but imagine how good it would have been in Queen's hands!), the surprising City Of Delusion and Soldier's Poem, in which Matt Whatsisname proves he can sing, like he once did in the deathless Unintended. Assassin isn't bad but somehow seems to try to hard. Which I guess sums up how I feel about Muse in general.

I’ll admit I’m quite fond of Knights of Cydonia, mostly because it’s in Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock. But Muse, legends of rock? I don’t think so. The album isn’t dreadful, but the songwriting is repetitive, recycling musical motifs far too often. The vocals are distinctive, but that doesn’t equate to good. The lyrics are weak, saying a lot without really saying anything. Overall, it’s middle-of-the-road anthemic rock for wannabe-cool 16-year-old boys and men like Marcus, the divorced letting agent from Stath Lets Flats.

If anyone can help me connect my PS2 to my new TV then that would be much appreciated. The AV connection is not working so the TV is recognising the input exists, but it's not showing anything. Would be great to get Guitar Hero up and running again.

Feels like Costco-brand U2, which I don’t necessarily mean as a bad thing!

Muse makes big dumb arena music. I remember liking this record when it came out but revisiting it 20 years later, it's pretty terrible. Some of the songs here would indeed sound good live, but the lyrics are horrible across the board and anyone with a basic knowledge of arena rock or heavier music can tell that the songs here just don't hold up. The only thing saving this from a 1 is really Knights of Cydonia, that song slaps. There are also some good riffs sprinkled throughout the album, though those are generally ruined by poor song structure. How they got to be so big is a mystery.

There is a lot to like about this album, but it does get tiresome trying to listen straight through, so dropped a star.

Some hits, but can handle only 2 muse songs at a time

All these songs sound the same. And they sound the same as the songs on their first album (the only other one I've heard), which is to say they sound like throwaway Radiohead songs. And that one that sounds like it wants to be a Queens of the Stone Age song.

The songs vary from somewhat interesting sounds to really generic arena rock type shit. Thom Yorke and Bono only pull off the whiny vocals because the songwriting's not so vapid. There are a couple solid tracks, starlight and supermassive black hole, but overall really mediocre.

Bored. Ambitious without substance

I think that Supermassive Black Hole being used so prominently in the first Twilight movie has tainted that song for me... and Knights of Cydonia was mega hard on Guitar Hero 3! Overall, I'd prefer to listen to one of Muse's other albums. 2.5

I'd never listened to Muse before this album came up on this list. I noted that Wikipedia said it was influenced by Depeche Mode, Millionaire, Lightning Bolt, Sly and the Family Stone, so I was reasonably optimistic. Unfortunately I found the album had no evidence of those influences, and instead had a horrible bombastic sound (each band member seems to have wanted to be up front in the mix), and with a vocalist who seemed to want to be Thom Yorke (and I'm not a great fan of Radiohead). I'm left with the sense that I never want to play a Muse album again. Very definitely not to my taste.

Horrible music. Lacking humanity on every level. Look, these guys can play their instruments but it all feels clinical and performative. There are occasional moments where the melody cuts through the histrionics (Starlight) but the majority of this is ultra-compressed and genuinely unpleasant to listen to. No Muse is good news.

There’s a couple of stand out songs on this album, unfortunately something about Muse grates on me, it might be Matt Bellamy’s voice, it might be the harmonies. They have some good riffs; Starlight’s piano, Supermassive Black Hole, Assassain. But the surrounding music/lyrics of the song feel a bit… i dunno, lame? Sorry Mr Muse 1.5/5.0 Best Song: Starlight/Assassain?

It stinks and i hate it, I'm not going to be grown up about it. Matt Bellamy makes virgin music. Its so lame, every riff stinks, and the music puts me in a bad mood

As soon as it started I knew this was a production. Which now makes sense as I know how big Muse got/ how much of a production their gigs are/were. I bet people that are into Sci-fi love this. I never think of myself as a Muse fan, I do love Plug in baby but that’s it, however, as soon as Starlight kicked in I was reminded I quite like this one too. Okay as soon as Supermassive Black Hole kicked in I was bopping, this definitely hits different now I’ve come to understand the majesty of Twilight. And YES I only watched it last year GIVE ME A BREAK, #iwasateenagefilmsnob Don’t love ‘Map of Problematique’, already the lyrics are too fantasy for me, I don’t love the over saturated production of this one and the actual bones of the song just aren’t interesting to me. There’s nothing there to keep my attention. In the words of David Byrne, you’re talking a lot.. but you’re not saying anything! Oh it’s all lyrically and musically a bit basic for me, nowt to write home about. And I think I’m getting a headache from the overproduced music along with his whiny drawl. Assassin drew me in with the interesting intro but then just became too overwhelming to keep my interest. I think I just don’t gel at all with the juvenile sci-fi lyrics and his layered breathy vocals are fingernails on a chalk board to me. God it just all feels like I’m sitting through the end credits of a Final Fantasy game on PS1 trying to hold out for some extra info or something. Wow I can’t believe I got through that in one piece.

The best parts of this album are the songs that sound like they’d soundtrack the credits of a shitty Michael Bay movie.

I find it strange that not only have I never heard MUSE before, but no one in my circles have ever mentioned them. They play arenas? They are on 1001 albums list? This must have some merit. Then I listened. It starts off with modern orchestral track that sounds like Trans Siberian Orchestra wrote non- Xmas music. After that it gives synthy Radiohead made by theater kids, which is most of the album, until you get weird sex rock with faux Prince vocals. Then there's the QOTSA-esqe tracks and mariachi horns. I'd say pick a lane, but none of these lanes did anything for me.

It’s like a posh 16 year old boy who wants to break free listens to Radiohead on his way home from school and to the despair of his parents slicks his hair back with gel and picks up a guitar. Unfortunately to all our dismay, we have had to listen to the end result. It’s such a wannabe progressiveness to heavy rock that just does not work at all, and kind of makes them seem worse when you look at the examples that Radiohead left behind considering that this Muse record sounds more outdated. They’re clearly good musicians, but the output is so self-indulgent. To their credit, I actually hate how much I like supermassive black hole, so well done for that one Matt 👏 however the rest of it sounds like progressive space slop made by a teen with an electric guitar.

Ehh...during the first track I was thinking maybe I was too dismissive of this at the time as being some Radiohead wannabe, but then I hit "Supermassive Black Hole" and thought okay maybe I'd prefer if it was just aping Radiohead because this is shit. Map of the Problematique is nice though, partially because the lyrics are not just the same generic "resist" type platitudes that are just annoying to me now. This surface-level fight the power bullshit effects no change and does nothing for me in this day and age. Just more corporate nonsense packaged in a different way.

The track starlight sounds like a Wii song.

stylish and heavy

This has some art rock, prog, arena rock, plus some fuzzy grunge guitars modernized a bit and wrapped in a big, bombastic, over the top package. It's incredible. 4.5

Instant 5 stars. One of the core albums that informed my lifelong musical taste. For some reason I read some of the 1-star reviews of this album. Anyone who can listen to Knights of Cydonia and think 1-star is no friend of mine.

Automatic S-tier album. As soon as I saw it, I knew that I was gonna like it. Reminded me of when I used to listen to the album in 1st year undergrad. Songs that I like: Starlight Super massive blackhole Assassin Knights of cydonia Review - 9/10

Nice Album, modern classic

esse aqui é bom pra caralho, obg the twilight dark emo song

I love Muse and am very pleased to see them in this list. Solid rock music. 5 stars.

The best album recommended to me so far

First one on this list I had previously listened to. Personally, this is Muse best album, it has a common sound thread across the album that gives it cohesion while also giving each song a unique taste and flavor. There is a bit of rawness to their sound that refines over time, but it’s that same distinction that makes it stand out.

Loved the Phillip Glass opening, then my bias triggered by the singer's Bono resemblance and some really silly lyrics. Gave in, got over it, rocked out. Big Geeky Love.

Used to shred to Knights of Cydonia on guitar hero 3. Was one of my favorite songs on that game. Only years later did I dive deeper into Muses cataloged of music. I loveee this album, in my opinion Knights of Cydonia, Supermassive black hole, and Starlight are the Allstars on here, but the rest of the album is nothing to scoff at. The songs flow nicely together, going from faster paced, to slower vibes. Mixing in a lot of grandiose sounds, synth patches and vocal patterns shifting from major to minor, then back to major keys that just scratch an itch for me. Cool album art too. 9.5/10

One of my favorites by Muse

Yay - I know this one! Saw them n concert. Loved this when it came out, love it now.

326/1001 Muse - Black Holes and Revelations Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ Already a big Muse fan before this was released, this felt like the culmination of everything that they had been building to on previous albums. It's over the top, whilst still having an ear for the melody and quieter moments. They've not surpassed this imo.

Loved Muse as a teen. Still hits the spot.

This is like a bowl of Lucky Charms - it's for kids, it has zero nutritional value, but good lord it's tasty if you don't have too much of it.

music is love

bass on city of delusion goes so fucking hard holy moly overall great album

Long time favorite. Saw them live at redrocks when touring this album, possibly my best concert memories

Cool album - Loads of recognizable tracks

It's a very proggy album and definitely incorporates elements of Progressive Rock. It's very dramatic and Sci-fi, but there are a couple of love songs. It's an amazing album and is probably the greatest Muse album out there!

Despite what a lot of people say about Muse being basic, boring rock I love them and I think this is possibly their best album. There's some great popular songs like supermassive black hole and knights of Cydonia but also an underrated one, in my opinion, map of the problematique. 5 stars

very good ! the lyrics were edgy as hell but everything else was mindblowing

Outstanding. Epic. Powerful. Moving. No notes. 5 stars always and forever. Not my favorite in the discography but a top 3 nod.

My favorite Muse album. They incorporate influences from other genres without losing the rock feel like they did in later albums.

A high concept, sci-fi, anti-political, concept album that still rocks. A masterpiece.

Yaaaaaaay!!

A classic

Instrumentals similar to this make me tell the spirit from my body. I absolutely loved it and I knew some songs beforehand

Woahhhh

BANGER AFTER BANGER AFTER BANGER AFTER BANGER it was really good genuinely loved it

Muse are an interstellar version of queen. This album though.. excellent.

There's just something about Muse. So good.

a masterpiece. haven’t listened through the whole thing in years, and was surprised by the variety.

Had no idea the twilight song came from this album 🧛‍♀️

At first I was thinking a 9 because there are better muse albums. However, the amount of just pure great songs on this is staggering. 10/10

Oh man. 5 stars for nostalgia alone.

Black Holes and Revelations completely blew me away. Even though I already knew Muse, I had never really dived into their discography, and this album instantly reminded me of the things I love the most about Radiohead. Matt Bellamy’s vocals have that same emotional and desperate feeling at times, but the album adds a much more dramatic and explosive energy to it. What I loved the most were the western and Latin influences spread throughout the record, giving it this cinematic and almost futuristic atmosphere. The whole album feels massive, emotional, and immersive, balancing chaos and beauty perfectly.

Big fan surprised

Esse álbum é simplesmente incrível. Um dos melhores do Muse.

I’ve known it before, but I like it anyway. Muse is great, like his electronic sound

I always dug Muse. Is what it is.

SUPERMASSIVE WHACK-A-MOLE

Banger. Immediately listened a second time. Lots of variety, great riffs, musicianship, vocal harmonies etc. All bob on 👍

A very good album from one of my favourite bands. Best track Knights of Cydonia. 4.5 stars rounded up for the live versions of some of these songs.

Loved this album back then, still love it now!

One of the best MUSE albums, iconic!

Epic, crisp, and clean

all bangers!

I like it

This album fucks.

Love the theatre and big rock sounds of this album not to forget the vocals of Matt Belamy. Starlight, knights of Cydonia and Starlight are all great tracks.

fucking INSANE! cool to hear that iconic twilight song in the context of it’s album, but just wow. love the second half of the album and some of the instrumental solo moments floored me

Excellent album 5

An album (and band) that played a crucial role in getting me "properly" into music and laying the foundations for my current tastes. I first heard this when I was 9, in 2008, through my Dad having and playing the CD, and whilst he would often play his music at home (mostly electronic, prog, new wave and 90s rock), Black Holes and Revelations is one of the first albums I heard that truly made sense to me and demanded my attention. This was more or less the first time that any music of his resembling prog "clicked" with me; courtesy of its bombastic soundscapes, ambitious structures and modernised, yet stylistically 70s-esque modular synth workouts, whilst prioritising huge refrains and ensuring catchy, accessible songwriting for my unprimed ears. It eventually completely contextualised the likes of Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes et al. for me, leading me down a rabbit hole of "weird" prog whilst also spurring me onto anthemic stadium rock. Before long, I was a Muse megafan with several of their other albums illegally torrented onto my new MP3 player I asked for that Christmas, but this one has easily had the most airtime from me over the years.

Best een mooi album. Paar bekende hits. Veel nostalgie

Incredible. This one will be saved for future listens.

What can I say about this album? It’s nothing short of amazing. From start to finish just straight bangers, it’s quickly starting to become one of my favorites. I’d definitely buy this album.

Rock and roll space opera. Satellite Starburst feed back and fuzzy. Epic Wagnerian Flash Gordon fantasy. Dr. Who'dat... Dat be Muse. I don't understand a single song. But every lyric is full feels. Love it... crazy robot masterpiece!

Instant favorite. I was blown away from the start and throughout the album I was like "why haven't I heard this yet?". The guitars and the synths and the overall production is really well done, his voice definitely shines and I really rock with bringing up the themes in the album. Take a Bow, Starlight, and City of Delusion were my favorites. 9.5/10

The sound reminded me of Radiohead.

I thought this album was really good

Can be argued as Muse's best record. It's a timeless record and a modern classic. Played and sung well, with songwriting that was both inovative and rooted in classic genres, that resulted in songs like Knights of Cydonia and Supermassive Black Hole. 5/5

This has always been my jam

I'm not a muse-head, but this came out at a pretty pivotal time for me, and has some truly outstanding tracks. Supermassive, Knights of Cydonia and Starlight all excel, and the rest are no slouches. I'm gonna have a hard time not giving it 5. Possibly flavoured by my age, but after a few days of some really dubious albums at least this one I think is a very clear inclusion.

muse's fourth album, a big spacey alt rock collection. they've made it big with their last album, and now that they've made a name for themselves, they wanted to try something a little different, something a little less soft. all sorts of songs for all different moods, drum and guitar work equally amazing. this album is essentially a prog rock album for a modern age. they sure took time on this album, and i can absolutely hear it. every track is mixed, sung played to near-perfection.

Bro I #lovethisalbum both before its time and perfectly representative of it

Otherworldly album I’m pretty familiar with the songs on this album, although this is technically my first time listening to the whole thing. The overall space theming and sound makes this one feel so special, reminds me a bit of Dark Side of the Moon except cranked up to 11. Matt Bellamy’s vocals are pretty great, the instrumentations amazing, and the variety’s pretty outstanding where no two songs sound the same Starlight is definitely my favorite on the album, such a great song that really evokes the feeling of traveling to space, that sci fi synth sounds great whenever it shows up. Supermassive Black Hole’s gotta be Muse’s most popular song, and while it’s not quite my favorite on this album it brings so much energy, that guitar riff is so powerful and the musical emphasis on the even beats makes the whole song feel like it’s slapping you in the face. Knights of Cydonia is also great; it’s a dynamic song with tons of momentum, some great guitar solos, and some of the best drumming on the album. Not every song is a hit on here, but I think the highs are more than enough to make up for the somewhat lackluster second half compared to the first half. Pretty fitting album to get while we got astronauts circling the moon

Sounds emo and yet I love it. This album is so high energy, I love listening to it. There’s not much for me to say other than the fact that this album just tickled my brain in the right way.

Wow, this sounded just like Radiohead, but more intense. I love tracks like Starlight and invincible. Truly amazing album, vocals were amazing, instrumental was perfect. Not a single track went to waste

🌟 High energy start to an absolutely fantastic album! I listened to it over and over. I already knew "Starlight" fairly well from a podcast that covered the clapping section of that song. Beyond that, I didn't really know anything about Muse before listening to this album. I've decided that five stars is an attainable rating on this site separate from how I might rate now, but normally. I'm reluctant to hand out five stars unless they are truly warranted. I have no hesitation in giving this album five stars. It's awesome!

Already have heard this album before but it was nice to go back to because it's been awhile

This album feels like junk food. I don’t know how to describe it. It feels bad and a little gross… but it’s so good. It’s so much fun. I think the mixed feelings come from the extreme polish on this album. The songs sound like they were designed to be hits. But not a single song on this album had me bored. One song even got me subconsciously headbanging a little! I almost never do that! I feel weird about giving it a 5, but I want to. In no way does the album feel as artistic as something like Bob Dylan. But dude, it’s just so fun. Going back to junk food: it’s 5 stars the way Taco Bell is a 5 star restaurant. Yes, I wholeheartedly believe Taco Bell is a 5 star restaurant. It feels like it shouldn’t be… but come on. I can’t eat nacho fries and then say that I’m not happy.

Already knew a lot of songs on this album, it's just really good and cohesive.

Many lyrics and instrumentals resonate with my soul. There's a reason popular media has used many of these tracks.

Banger.

I have of course heard the hits but had no idea they fit so well inside of a cohesive album. Some surprises: - Hoodoo - Assassin - Soldier's Poem !!! Albums like these are what keep me doing this challenge.

The most damning thing I can say about Muse is I find them inoffensive. Supermassive Black Hole and Knights of Cidonia are bangers and always will be, the songs on the album that I don't vibe with are still FINE. In a normal world this would be a 4, but I'm not giving albums 4s or 2s so it's getting a 5. If you're going to ape Radiohead's brand of art rock I'd much prefer this direction to Coldplay's direction.

I love this album! I'm biased because I grew up on it but still, it's really great

Tarvitseeko tätä sen kummemmin edes kommentoida, hittibiisiä toisen perään.

Top songs: Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole (obviously), Soldier’s Poem, Assassin, City of Delusion, Knights of Cydonia I originally thought I’d only give 5s to albums everyone imagines (Abbey Road, Pet Sounds, etc.) to keep the “prestige” of the rating, and that Muse would certainly not reach that prestige. I guess I’m pretentious because this album rocks. 5/5 5/5

One of the greatest brit group out there! Extremely talended musicians!

Jesus, Muse used to be so great. This was the last of the truly great albums before it became slightly patchy (and then off the deep end bad). Some all time classics on this and love the desert rock influence.

Had a huge phase with Muse in high school and I have a sweet spot for this album until Drones. This album has so many bangers and playing guitar to knights of cydonia is always so much fun. I could listen to this all the time and still have a blast.

I would have chosen Origin of Symmetry or Absolution but this album is still fucking good. Probably 4 stars but I'm feeling nostalgic listening to this for the first time in at least a decade. 5 stars.

I adore Muse and I adore this album. One of the few bands that go out of their way musically to create a distinct sound that evolves rock while still making good listenable music.

I think this may be the first album I could give a review off without listening to it. However I still do listen to it because why would I skip such a delight as this album? Anyways, it is perhaps one of the strongest muse albums out there, with some massive hits, but it also flows amazingly and feels like a great album. Sometimes harder rock albums start to feel a bit flat as a metalhead as you're used to more than they give. Muse really doesn't have that, using strong riffs with groovy drums really keeps you hooked throughout the album. Making every song a delight, and feeling powerful. Muse for me truly embodies rock, and what it should and can be.

Favorite Track: Starlight

Rating: 4.5/5 Short Review: Grand, dramatic rock that blends arena riffs, spacey synths, and dystopian themes. It’s theatrical but controlled, balancing bombast with sharp songwriting. Favorite Track: Knights of Cydonia. The western-style intro builds into a massive, galloping finale that feels like a full sci-fi epic compressed into one song.

This album is great, don't feel like I need to say much else. 4.8/5

This was pretty good for working to, liked it

A glorious, bombastic and fun listen. Queen meets OK Computer.

I think I've been in a really good mood recently. Easy to please :] I also did know like a third the songs on the album already though?? Surprising! Very good :]

The intial song was great, some music are already hits, but there where some gems like soldier's Poem (the melody from Elvis my way is spot on). Really good album.

I was at the Wembley show where they recorded HAARP, and that among other things (the music, too, I suppose) is probably why I think this album is all but perfect. That it came out at a very formative time for me as a music enjoyer can't've hurt its chances, either.

loved every song on this album how have I not listened to it before!!!

now, how big of a black hole are we talking?

13 year old me’s favorite album

legendary album pull

fav track - supermassive black hole 95/100

Love this, and would listen to it on repeat.

I've listened to this album a million times and still like it.

My favorite Muse record, love the energy on this one.

Very Nice. Kinda Grunge? Or just rock? Dunno the Genre but Like it a lot

I actually like it better than I thought I would. Loveeeee Supermassive Black Hole.

Wildly Bombastic! It has a little of everything. Almost like it should be the soundtrack to a medieval dystopian space western. The closest sound analogy I can make is Queen meets Depeche Mode.

Geniaal album, muzikaal zo interessant en genre overstijgend

A little weak between the hits but god damn are those three songs excellent

I WILL SACRIFICE MY LIFE FOR PAKISTAN GRAPE 5 STAR⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow, this was really, really good. Better than I expected it to be. Also more political than I expected it to be. Opener had my jaw literally dropped. Invincible and Glorious both got me really emotional, which is rare for a song to do on first listen for me. I’ll definitely be listening to more Muse. 5 ⭐️

- who doesn’t like supermassive blackhole thanks to twilight. muse is an amazing band, electronically and sonically super wide spacey and aggressive. like the core of a robot is a dying star. it feels as if u are eating an angry dinner with martians at one of jupiter’s moons. matt belamy is a genius, mixing space elements, hard rock tones, surf rock, jazz, spanish style strums and symphonic elements along with his ethereal stretching voice. the work of muse is so abstract and new, something you won’t expect, but it will pull everything under its rug and before you ask, yes, especially corrupt government. i can say many great things about this band but not as great as the songs speak for themselves.

BANGER ALERT 5/5

I used to think Muse were a poor man's Radiohead. I don't think that anymore. Wonderful album.

Superb.

My wife will be happy that I liked this.

Omfggggg oh my fucking God, YES YES YES YES YES AMAZINNGG

YEAHHHHHHH it’s temu radiohead time. and can i say that i actually quite enjoy muse as a radiohead fan or is that against the law? but anyway here's a 5 for you. mister Bellamy, for your works that are not as radiohead as people think and how you improve upon thom yorke's trademark falsetto and artistic composition. 5/5

they sound so much like radiohead

A bit cheesy but man, it’s a good time

Highlights: Map of the Problematique, Assassin, City of Delusion, Glorious (Japan bonus track). En Knights Of Cydonia vanwege de live-ervaring

practically perfect

Fast perfekt.

Muse is like popcorn, blockbuster rock; nothing groundbreaking, but damn they are just so fun to listen to

love this album & was very nostalgic listening to this, a great first album to get

assassin is a straight up banger! But a great album overall. Lyrics relevant as ever too...

Banger

The lp slaps so hard. It is big, loud and dramatic. And i love it! So many great songs and they are all cool for a different reason. This blends queens of the stoneage, the killers and quite a bit of radiohead in the best way. Supermassive blackhole is a banger. But knights of cydonia might have grabbed the song of the record title in the end there. 4.5 for me, so lets round up. :)

Very good album. I knew that I liked some of it already but there were even more that sounded so familiar to me or that I already knew the words to. Absolute classic of the cds growing up.

Really enjoyed this album, listened to it multiple times and will continue to do so

So many massive tunes on this, especially assassin and knights

To borrow a track title: Glorious.

The yearning and heartbreak vibes.. easy 5/5

Without this being what I classify as one of my favorite bands--and having never owned this album--somehow I'm familiar with nearly every song. And I love them all. The tracks I wasn't familiar with are going to get added to my rotation to see if they become as beloved as the rest. Take a Bow Starlight Supermassive Black Hole Map of the Problematique Invincible Assassin Exo-Politics Knights of Cydonia

Wow! I remember when this album came out, just how (no pun intended) massive this album was in the UK, especially around this period when rock music was not popular in the charts. To this day, Blackholes and Revelations is Muse at their peak. Its sad how quickly they fell into irrelevance following this but it proves just how fantastic this album is.

Goed!!

An incredible album. Easily one of my favorites. It has this great pop-rock sound on top of heavy music and dramatic vocals. I can't recommend it enough.

just WOW

The first three songs worked extremely well together. Starlight is probably my favorite Muse song and I used to not like Supermassive Black Hole but it goes harder than I remembered. The last three songs also had a great run, with Knights of Cydonia capping the album off wonderfully. Some solid tracks in between as well, with no bad songs on the album really. 5 stars for somehow the only Muse album on the list (that was later taken off the list 😔)

I was really afraid this had fallen into the trap of "Album you liked at 13 that is bad now" but I was pleased fo say I enjoyed it as much as ever. This is the album that truly got me into theatrical stadium rock, and while I no longer think it is their best album I can't deny the effect it had on me. Seeing Assassin performed live, along with many of the other songs on here, is always a treat. They put on a great show and this album is no different. I love the variety of instruments and styles they use, and the way the album ebbs and flows from quiet to loud. This album definitely set up a lot of the big pits they fell into later - too many conspiracy theories and computers - but they strike a balance here that they were not really able to find again.

God what a fantastic album. Maybe it’s because I’m tired of the more generic rock featured on this list, but this felt like such a breath of fresh air.

Many "polished" rock albums fail to get it right and come across as soulless cash grabs. Black Holes and Revelations, however, is rich, expansive and almost cinematic in its production and writing. While I generally abhor rock that is over-polished (think Bon Jovi, etc.), this album takes it and runs away with it perfectly. "Knights of Cydonia" hits the nail straight on the head for the overall space-western feel. Favorite Song: "Knights of Cydonia"

What an album! The guitars! The drums! Defined alternative rock! Must buy this one on vinyl

Muy bueno

I LOVE THIS ALBUM!

I fucked with thisssssss

LOVED THIS ALBUM

2nd Law is my favorite, but this is still an all timer.

Fantastic album with a slew of hits you’ll probably recognize. Great production and vocals. Will definitely be listening again. Staples like Knights of Cydonia, Supermassive Black Hole, and Starlight. Hits.

Great album, my first 5/5. I've always disliked SBH so I was not very hopeful but I ended liking just about every other song on the album

Outstanding, bigger than life, no notes. Also fantastic representation from a decade that has been lackluster (to me) so far.

Unexpectedly peak. Like if Queen was pop-punk and experimental.

Banger, sorry not sorry

So very good. Felt as if there was fire coming out of my ears. Feels like Pink Floyd

Honestly it rocks. It’s a perfect capture of 2006, i had this on my ipod nano

Feels like Future of Forestry meets U2. I love it. I can’t believe I haven’t listened to them before. And the things I have heard I didn’t know it was them. Fun to put a “face” with the name. The music layering is so well done. There’s so much going on even on the seemingly simple songs but it’s not overwhelming.

This album is so cohesive and yet so distinct. I’m really impressed! Muse has a lot more volume and texture than I ever thought they did before.

Goddamn. Kocham te wojenne imaginacje. Also BAS?

Heck yeah! Now this is what I was hoping to discover on this list. It's an album by a band I've never heard that absolutely kicks ass. A winner from the very first song, one of the best album openers I've ever heard ("Take a Bow") to the last "Glorious" track. This album is what you get when you take your Prog Rock out to the dance floor. But, since your Prog doesn't want to go alone, you swing by the opera to pick up Queen. Then, you swing by the beach to pick up Dick Dale (and his flamenco guitarist buddy?) Once on the dance floor, your Prog is delighted to find Nine Inch Nails, Daft Punk, Dream Theater, and Prince all jamming together with a full orchestra. While it may sound silly that you're also dancing with crooked politicians, space pirates, and aliens, it actually feels epic and cinematic! This album is a wild, delightful ride that checks all my favorite musical boxes. Ear candy I can't get enough of. More please.

Absolutely peak, better than Radiohead. Knights of Condonia is cinema

Rly it’s a 4.5 but that’s not an option so 5 it is

Better than Radiohead

Monster of an concept album. Exciting from start to finish, this is a must listen.

Never knew City of Delusion went this hard.

I absolutely loved this album growing up, and coming back and re-listening to it was a real treat. A perfect blend of eerie and heavy. Knights of Cydonia has a special place in my heart, I remember as a kid staying up late every night trying to get 100% on that song on Guitar Hero. Good times. Standout Songs: Starlight Map of the Problematique Invincible Assassin Exo-Politics City of Delusion Knights of Cydonia

A great album, Knights of Cydonia is one of my all time favorite songs. I also recalled liked Starlight and Supermassive Black Hole.

I thought I was a fool for no one Ooh baby, I’m a fool for Muse

Love Muse!!

Unreal album, historic, monumental - one of the best ever.

Masterpiece of an album and Muse is one of the GOATs. Every song bangs, every lyric slaps, such an amazing album. 10/10

Wow!!!!! I'd heard of Muse, but never listened to them. Great stuff.

Invincible is good; Exo-politics is really good; knights of cydonia is an all time banger

I am that old dude that loves MUSE and I don't care what people think! Such a great album!

This is, to me, arguably Muse's best work. It came as they were getting much of the mainstream spotlight, but comes before their descent into formulaic rehashes of their earlier sounds. It's an over-the-top treat for the ears. "Take a Bow" isn't my fave, but everything else is fantastic.

Shits awesome

Had to skip to this to avoid a run of albums I dreaded. I'm biased. Ive seen Muse about 15, times and this album came out during my Muse high point. I've gone off and got back into them since and though this isn't as great as the two albums that came before it's still a 5/5. Even with Invincible. Everything else is just interesting or catchy and Map of the Problematique's drums take it to a 4 alone. Alright Matt is shit at writing lyrics and they all sound like they were written by a 14 year old. But he can play. Reviewers comparing to Radiohead and especially Coldplay must be drunk.

This is an incredible album. The last of muse's stellar 4 album run. It's the most colourful one, the brightest, the most ridiculous, but also the last one where they managed to contain the pomposity. It's beautifully over the top, the synths and guitar compliment each other perfectly, Matt's voice sours, Chris's basslines drive throughout and the drums groove in each track. It's just brilliant.

I'll be honest: I went looking into this album with very low expectations but ended up enjoying it. Definitely a new "one of my favorite albums of all time" and might consider a future relisten

jo. gern. banger album. gits en rare zwei füfi in folge? wie take a bow uuuufe und ufe goht fuuuuck. yeah. mer meint immer s wird rockig aber s isch synthi time! es cha sich nöd uf e tonart einige. okaaay jetz gitarre. uuui und die verschiedene stimmer überall. de bellamy singt insaaane. starlight findi scho immer bitz z poppig eigentli. aber d bridge rettets. und dass de refrain so spoot chunt. es isch alles meega synth heavy? ui de gitarrepart bide brigde macht wie e zweiti stimm oyeah. ok liebs. supermassive black hole fix au scho z viel ghört aber bruuudi slappt das. er isch mega uf sim pop shit gsi uf dem album. map of the problematique chli zum schnuufe dezwüsched. er singt soo pathetisch haha. kei ahnig es isch knights of cydonia druff. füfi.

Heck yeah. First time I listened to this band was at Bonarroo. 3 solid days of music and they were in my top 5 for the festival. They really blew me away. All the songs on this album are incredibly well done. There's a drive and urgency to these tracks, I enjoy the space rock and new wave elements of this album.

This is such a good album, so nostalgic for me.

Magnificent! Supermassive guitars.

i remember leaving this album halfway through. not bcuz i couldn't stand it, but just bcuz i had to do smth else. and i never came back to it. until 3 months later. which is now. god why did i word that so badly pretty alt intro lmao. bro thinks he's thom yorke. jk i love this guy uhh are reviews public? if so, hi there. call me a normie, but ts is peak. leave your thom yorke suckin ahh behind and open your mind! OMG I LOVE THIS ALBUM SO MUCH. this is such a fucking vibe omg. city of delusion is so damn good!!!! bro overall this is one of my fave rock albums now lmao. i love bri ish music. i didnt expect to friggin love this album so much. 5 stars!

As one of the albums that got me properly into music, I would be lying if I said that I didn't approach this with some apprehension. It had been a while since I'd listened and the last thing I wanted was to ruin a memory of such an exciting time in my musical memory. I was happily proven wrong. If anything, with more informed political opinions, the dystopian imagery throughout rang truer for me than ever before. By the end of opener Take A Bow, I was 15 again; by the end of the album, I had fallen in love with Muse again. Critics will argue over their best album; is it this or is it Absolution? For me, this is them at their most inspired, demonstrating their best songwriting, best variety and sheer talent of these musicians.

A perfect album. This album feels so...out of body. I love the vocals and how the whole band works together and tells a story. Such a great album

liked songs: all of them This is the most Muse album that Muse has ever made. Classic. 5

This is an album I love from a band I‘ve seen live twice. It’s more experimental abd a bit weird towards the end but overall it’s amazing.

Man I've done the rounds with this one. Gets me every time. So sonically dense. Great arrangements and songwriting. Not afraid of going big, nor ashamed to, and it shouldn't be. Hits all those epic tones masterfully. City of Delusion and Knights of Cedonia are amazing tracks on a fantastic record. The trumpet solo on City is pure eargasm. Doesn't matter how many times I hear it, I can always spin this one.

Yes!!!

Great energy! Really enjoyed this one

Phenomenal listen, with the right amount of edge and energy accompanied by fantastic vocals and better instrumentation.

Zero skippable song. Pure peak. The opening song was pretty lit which was a pleasant surprise and then we have starlight and supermassive black hole which are BANGERS. I think it’s a 4.5/5 but with this system I am NOT giving it a 4. Get your 5 muse

Didn’t catch these guys the first time around, although eventually, I heard this song Madness, but I really like this. Has a Kansas-like prog quality to a lot of it that I really enjoyed.

Utterly brilliant album

I first heard Starlight when I was in the 6th grade. My radio alarm clock went off at 6 AM and my routine was to spend an hour in bed laying to the alt rock morning show. The single was released in September and was in heavy rotation that fall, so I probably heard it every morning for months. In the summer of 2020 I "rediscovered" Muse while on a road trip through the desert. Knights of Cydonia was our theme for every washed out, unpaved, rock-filled death trap we drove over. That winter, I met and fell in love with a Muse superfan. In 2023 we got to see them live together in Las Vegas - what an incredible show. They've been in my top artist rotation for the last several years, 20 years since I first met their sound. Muse has always been a force in my life, I can't imagine my musical library without them. I wept during this listen through.

Discazo.

This one surprised me. None of the songs missed. Deep dive here I come.

TAKE A BOW WOWWWWW Starlight icónicaaaaa supermassive black hole mt boa tb soldier's poem fez me lembrar queen e cant help falling in love a intro de invincible faz me lembrar o fim de programas de tv onde aparecem os créditos mt bom album em geral!!

An all-timer for me, honestly. I dig the theatricality tempered with intense musicianship

96/1089 Starlight is just so good and kinda euphoric which seems a little odd coming from Muse in a way. Supermassive Black Hole is iconic and creates such a strong moody atmosphere City of Delusion was a pleasant surprise. Some have issues with Muse at this time for being “edgy teen music” etc but this whole album just sounds so good that for me the lyrics are almost redundant, like maybe it’s a bit try hardy but it has to be and is worth it to sell the sound. Knights of Cydonia is a classic and was always a favourite of mine to play on Guitar Hero i thought i was set on this being a 4 star album based on the songs i knew and the sound i was familiar with but i think i can only give it a 5 faves: Starlight, City of Delusion, Supermassive Black Hole, Glorious 85/100

A later album than what I used to listen to. Have seen them life in Belgium.

Love this band! My first time listening to a full length project and it definitely lived up to the expectations.

Proggy enough to have musical depth, rocky enough to be a headbanger. The sweet spot.

I forgot how good this album is. It's one of Muse's best but one I haven't come back to in years. There are a couple meh tracks that keep this from being an all-timer, but Knights of Cydonia on its own warrants inclusion on this list. This is a 4.5 star album, but I'll round up for the sake of nostalgia, waiting this album's peak songs over it's inconsistency.

This is another absolutely biased one for me. I have heard this album countless times and think it is a masterpiece. I'm sure this is just my brain remembering when life was simpler, but I can live with that. The songs still go hard, and I still like listening to them.

Favorites: Take a Bow, Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, Assassin, Knights of Cydonia

A rich, complex sound that is somewhat reminiscent of Queen. Yet there is enough creative originality to keep them from sounding like a wannabe or copycat.

Love this album. They've got their own sound, but there's enough variety to keep it interesting. Full sound, the synthesizers add to the music, rather than dominating or distracting. Great vocals. Love the subject matter in the songs. Great drumming. 5* for sure. And I've never gotten sick of it, despite innumerable listens.

Musr rocks

Holy hell, I forget just how staggering this album is. From the opening notes to the final crescendo, it plays out like a space-opera concept record - the kind of soundtrack you’d expect behind an animated sci-fi epic. Muse pulls from everywhere: you can hear the Depeche Mode darkness in the synths, the futurist pulse in the rhythms, and even flashes of spaghetti Western grandeur in “Knights of Cydonia.” It’s theatrical without being cheesy, cinematic without losing its grit. The whole record is drenched in a sense of apocalypse and possibility, like the world is ending but it’s doing so in glorious technicolor. Few albums feel this big, this ambitious, and still manage to stay cohesive. This isn’t just a rock album - it’s a full-blown event.

How can we win when fools can be kings?

I unapologetically love Muse. The run of albums starting with Absolution all the way through The Second Law is one for the ages. BHAR is one of the best of the bunch. It's epic in scope from start to finish. The soundscapes, the guitars, the vocals and lyrics all hit me now as much as they did 19 years ago. I know Muse took what Radiohead was doing and allowed it to evolve in a more rock-opera direction. I don't see that as a bad thing

It’s strange to think that this is becoming quite a nostalgic listen already! I think it is fair to say that this was Muse at their commercial peak, with them headlining the first show at the new Wembley Stadium as part of the tour for this album, and having a track infamously feature in the Twilight films (Supermassive Black Hole). Despite it coming out in the mid-2000s, when Sam and I were first getting into music, this wasn’t my first introduction to Muse. My earliest memory of hearing them was when Uprising (from The Resistance) was played on Radio 1 after a Saturday morning Tennis lesson. In the year or two after this, Mum and Dad bought several of their CDs, including The Resistance, Absolution, Origin of Symmetry, and Black Holes and Revelations. For a long time this was exclusively how I listened to them, besides the odd live show at Glastonbury/Reading, broadcasted to TV. Around 2016, I started getting into more music on my own via Spotify and YouTube. This brought me to many new artists and genres that I hadn’t encountered before, but also brought me back to Muse. Safe to say, I was pretty obsessed with their stuff by the time Simulation Theory came out in 2018. Seeing them on tour with Sam is definitely a highlight gig for me. Muse are notoriously a consistently great live act, who even in 2018 still had a set laced with various tracks from Black Holes and Revelations. I can recall the hits (Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, and of course, Knights of Cydonia) being played, as well as some unexpected inclusions such as Take A Bow and Assassin. All of the above are great, but I’d like to highlight two tracks that I feel always to understand the radar. Map Of The Problematique is an anthemic, driving track, and the little-known Bonus Track, Glorious, is genuinely the perfect chaser after the beast that is Knights of Cydonia. Glorious, specifically, is one of my favourite closer tracks. Something about the guitar tone, and how the percussion is softly added throughout. I’d argue this is only Muse’s third best album, but it still can only go down as a 5 for me!

The magnum opus of a brilliant band. Muse at their absolute best. No weak songs. How can an album with Knights of Cydonia on it be anything less than 5 stars? It still gives me goosebumps now, and I’ve been listening to Muse for almost 20 years. Worth mentioning that on top of having an excellent discography, Muse are one of the very best live bands. I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen them 3 times, and each time they were incredible. My brother and I made it onto the official Simulation Theory film/DVD (see me singing at the camera during Starlight). I even saw them bring out Brian Johnson and play Back In Black which was pretty special. They’re one of those bands that you could see anywhere at any time and know with certainty that they will put on a top tier show. They’ve got the whole live performance thing down to a tee. We can only hope that future Muse albums come close to reaching the heights of Black Holes and Revelations. Luckily The Resistance, Drones, Absolution, and Origin of Symmetry are also great.

I make no apologies for loving Muse. They're great musicians, have written many of this century's best riffs, and they're not scared to take musical and lyrical ideas to extremes. What's that - too OTT for you? Too ridiculous? Grow up. I for one get enough mundanity from real life, thank you very much. God forbid a band makes music that requires you to loosen up, suspend your disbelief for a bit, and imagine you're starring in a sci-fi epic rather than aimlessly whiling your life away in your dull little town. Anyway, Absolution and Origin of Symmetry are their real 5-star albums (shameful omissions from the 1001 both), but BHAR has a good claim to the bronze medal. It seasons their signature space rock sound with tasteful sprinkles of synths, pop melodies and Queen-esque harmonies (before they followed all these directions a bit too far in future releases). 4.5

- familiarity: some, a couple of songs but not artist - album: flowed nicely - instrumentation: broad range, clean, interesting - lyrics: clear, huge range, fits the music, great falsetto - thoughts: really dig it, immediately downloaded all of their other albums - surprised: yes, will definitely listen again - score: 5/5

very good album!

Chansons pref : City of delusion

One of my favorite albums. I love how it's alt/heavy metal but it bends into other genres in its songs

Wow, that was like an instant classic. Really grabs your attention. Strong all the way through. I'm glad I found it through this list.

Oldie but a goodie

Went into space with this

I love it

No lubię te płytę. Kocham ten wokal, dynamikę i te gitarę. Co począć? 9/10

The epitome of nerdy cool

Knew more songs than I thought. Good vocal harmonies.

I haven't listened to Muse in a good long while. I was wondering if this album would hold up over time and compared to the many good albums in this list. Pleased to say it absolutely did. Matt Bellamy's heavenly singing, that grimy base, the grit and grandeur of it all. What an album.

This was awesome. I had heard a little Muse before, but couldn't tell you a single song title or hum any melodies or anything. This album was so much fun and the music was just 100% right up my alley. I loved this so much, I am an instant Muse fan. Five stars, easily.

Ah yes, the Twilight soundtrack. This is a very good album.

I came late to the Muse party so I don't know which tracks belong to which albums, prior to Drones. So this was an interesting listen, hearing these songs in this order on 1 album. Almost every playlist I've made has Map of the Problematique & Take a Bow. Lots of other tracks here that I should listen to more. Loved it.

A big sound with lots of hair-raising riffs. I've heard better, but this is good enough for five stars and a place in my Tidal library.

Very entertaining album.

I looked up the lead singer on Wikipedia and for a split second I thought I was looking at Jesse Pinkman

Fantastic. Incredible playing. Loved it.

Love this album. Have seen them perform this live. 10/10 would recommend. Loved Muse when this album was released.

So sick

Loved it then. Love it now.

One of the best albusm of my favorite band

5/5 geschenkt. Geiles Album von vorne bis hinten.

In biased for this as Mise is my favorite band please disregard my rating. Still their masterpiece was absolution and this the begining of a more commercial approach towards radio play. Same shit happened to Radiohead which is a top band in the planet as well. This trio of rockers are at the top of the rock food chain if you are not a fan you are not listening.

Personally this is the best album ever created

Love this album!
