Reviews (page 6 of 8)
I liked this. Will have to revisit.
I enjoyed listening to the music, Especially Come on Eileen.
Feels like Frankie Goes to Hollywood all over again, in that I learned these guys are not one hit wonders but I still didn't understand why the album made this list. Everybody knows Come on Eileen and I am so sick of that track, though it is solid. Jackie Wilson is a decent Van Morrison remake. The Celtic Soul Brothers sounded familiar and I quite liked it. Like a lot of the album it's really up-tempo and energetic. So I have to give Dexy's respect for that. And I do recognize their fusion of rock with a bunch of non-traditional instruments (horns, woodwinds, violins) and as an English band they do it better than some Celtic bands. So yeah, like the Frankie album I find myself creeping up to 3.5 but I won't go over the edge.
Sounded exactly like I thought it would, that 7 min song near the end went on forever though
ok, too much violin
C’mon
classic 3. i didnt like it but i can't call it bad. too long. come on eileen, tsop
Always amazing
Enjoyed
"Too-Rye-Ay" is the second studio album by English pop band Dexys Midnight Runners. Band leader Kevin Rowland decided to add a violin section to the existing horn section. The horn section was not too happy but would record this album after which they would leave. Good thing...I kind of like the interplay between the two sections. They actually re-recorded a few of the songs with the new violin section. This was the band's most successful album and their song "Come on Eileen" hit #1 in both the UK and US. It would really be their only hit in the US. The violins open things up on their first single "The Celtic Soul Brothers (More Please)." It's fast pace. Violins carrying the melody. Enjoyable enough. He's watching others perform while getting ready to take the stage..a little stage fright. The band does a nice cover of Van Morrison's "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)." The string and horn section are perfect for this song. The second side begins with "Plan B," an interesting song combining two songs. Actually, there are three parts to this song with a piano ballad and Rowland crooning, the pace picks up with the violins in the second part and ends with more a rock song and a prevalent bass. "Liars A to E" attacks music journalists. Piano, slower and soulful female backing vocals. The violin, the bass and we kick in with the album closer "Come on Eileen." Outstanding melody, beat and vocal chorus. Hey, a smile came to my face; it's been awhile since I heard this. He finds a childhood friend, Eileen, fully grown and well..."too-ra-loo-rye-ay." I am one of those Americans with "Come on Eileen" being my only exposure to Dexys Midnight Runners. This was a pretty solid album. I see that I have two other of their albums in this challenge. Given that this particular album is the least favorite of their leader Rowland, I'm looking forward to the other two. The album is still worth a listen.
I was trying to remember if there was another album from this band previously on this list, or if they just kept popping up in other background reading because of that 6 degrees thing in British Pop/Soul. Regardless the sum total of my knowledge of this group previously was Come On Eileen, and I was not expecting this album to be quite so odd. Listening to the sole U.S. hit in context I was struck likewise by what an odd song it is, especially for a number one single in America, a song I knew but realized I'd never really paid attention to before. Generally I liked the album, though it's not exactly my genre.
Not a bad sound here, it's the Come On Eileen album.
Come on Eileen er fortsatt like catchy, heldigvis!
Better than I remember. Still meanders into mediocrity every now and then, though
Not my general cup of tea but not bad, I liked 'Old' a lot.
These guys play your local pub? They're going to bring the house down. Right place at the right time, Come On Eileen is one of those lightning in a bottle tracks. Jackie Wilson Said here is better than Van Morrison's.
Yup, sounds like the band that did Come On Eileen. Still fun
Only listened to a few songs but I did like them
Come on Eileen is a great song and some of the other tracks on here had a similar energy. But it wasn't as tight as I hoped it would be or live up to that one hit.
Easy breezy feel good listening- sits on the same shelf as the Bruce alb in my mind.
Another album I wanted to hate that was actually surprisingly worthwhile. This probably deserves a second listen. Highlights: (I'm in heaven when you smile), come on Eileen, all in all.
Best album we've heard in a while, but still not the greatest. But it is a fun listen.
Fiddles, not banjos.
Kinda fun. Little bits of ska before that came a thing. Definitely original.
Album was decent. I wouldn’t change the station if it was on in the background, but also wouldn’t seek this out to listen to it.
Young soul brothers indeed. Fascinating artifact of the northern soul scene that stands on its own right. Just a bit too much filler to get over a 3.
Nice album. I can hear the Irish roots, big brass, and mesmerizing vocals from the lead singer.
This guy's voice is so unique. Borders between cool and kinda annoying. This is the 2nd album i got by them. Grows on you the more you listen. Just gotta get in the mood for that Irish vibe
Good Pop-record but only a few hits
The Celtic Soul Brothers, Come on Eileen normalne i live oraz Respect live spoko, reszta średnia takie 3.5
It’s absolutely an album built around a hit single. “Maybe throw a Van Morrison cover on there too.” I remember loving Come on Eileen, and liking their version of Jackie Wilson Says. Turns out, their version led me to the Van Morrison version, which is where that lived for me. The rest of this is forgettable, but Eileen gives it a 3.
I liked it... overall, truly...but had it not been for this list and Come on Eileen, I'm not sure most of us would know who this band.
I looked back at my previous review for Dexys, and I compared them to The Clash but with an added horn section. This record feels a lot more indebted to Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, with horns and a very active violin. More Celtic influence, as well. It's fun, but this record felt a little one-note to me. Once you heard a few songs, you got it. Favorite tracks: "Old", "Come On Eileen"
At the time I went well beyond saturation point with Come on Eileen. And his voice + violins would usually turn me off. However, overall it was better than I expected
Energetic Music; portraying some good amount of joy in life; to a certain extend however also quite similar from track to track; good album; probably not my favorite either.
Come on Eileen and other songs by the group that did Come on Eileen
Unremarkable but pleasant and listenable. Every song kinda feels like come on Eileen. But there’s a ton of shit on this list and I’d happily take more of this
It’s a peppy little album. The best track though is obviously Come On Eileen, even though I’ve heard it thousands of times. But damned if that isn’t one of the best one-hit wonders of all time.
Some jams but gets old
It was OK. There didn't seem to be any other catchy songs like "Come On Eileen."
Come on Eileen
Interesting voice. The style of music is not my match. They should have let go of the violon. Bad adjustments of intensity, too simple and annoying violon. To me the best song is Reminisce at they end of the album.
kinda liked it, was surprised
I'm a bit surprised to find this album on the list. It's good, but I don't feel like this broke any new ground or is really that spectacular. 3 stars.
As I'm making my way through this list of albums I've come to the realisation that I don't really like new wave music. Come On Eileen is a banger tho
Although I shit all over the first Runners' album I got, this one was a pleasant surprise and went a long way towards redeeming and legitimizing the band in my eyes (ears). To note, it's upbeat, raucous, fun and creative. 3 wailing fiddles out of 5 🎻🎻🎻
This album was a pleasant surprise, with more than just the one iconic "Come On Eileen" to offer a listener. While it has several high notes and songs, the larger album is still of a time and not terribly amazing or worth revisiting. However, big shout out for the great "Jackie Wilson Said" cover.
I was surprised at the consistency of the album, its good. The overt nods to Celtic culture is interesting bc it sounds so completely British other than a few folk phrases peppered on. Vocal stylings very unique.
Very 80s but also very unique at the same time. The fade out of a lot of the songs does throw me off though. Regardless, most of the songs are really fun and not what I expected out of an album from the 80s. Reminisce (Pt.1) was an interesting end to this. Fave track(s): All In All (This One Last Wild Waltz), Old, Plan B
Öðruvísi 80s plata. Hress og skemmtileg, með heilmiklu þjóðlagaívafi.
Like the vibe, energy, instruments. Some really stand out songs but apart from the few, the rest kinda blend into one.
This sounds like the kind of album my mom would adore. Shows come on Eileen’s instrumental wasn’t a gimmick for one song it’s the whole ass album
Is fun, especially the well-known song.
Wish version of The Cure but with trumpets
Excellent art direction, unique styling to the music. Hampered slightly by poor mixing
Old + Dubious
This was enjoyable, it was nice to hear real instruments especially after some of the over produced, synth-laden crap we've endured. Hearing the song Come on Eileen in context of the album was interesting too
Its a distinctive album of Van Morrison style Celtics soul with brass and folky violins. Come on Eileen is still ubiquitously annoying. Also K Rowlands voice is not for everyone. Full of gusto but its not something I lreally ove. A breath of fresh air in the sometimes naff 80s though.
It turns out there's more to this band than Come on Eileen. But also quite a lot of repetitive filler in there.
If Queen and the Talking Heads had a baby and that baby was a little bit into Celtic and Southern music. Theatrical. Upbeat. Big. Come on Eileen is a classic, but I really enjoyed 'Jackie Wilson said...'
This was new for me but I recognize some of the songs.
Not the Dexys Midnight Runners I would rate highly from their collection of albums
There should be more pop songs written about darts players.
cuts along nicely at first, peaking at 'Jackie Wilson Said'. After that, becomes overly long ... they could've cut a chunk out ... all becomes a bit same/same. The Waterboys do what Dexys do, just better.
Really happy music!
Fun but a lot of it is kinda samey
I listened to the 2022 remix album. Sounds good, not much bottom end. Oh, wrong review style. Yeah, some good songs on here and always nice to hear some non-rock instruments played fast and effectively.
This album mixes "cool! good English folk stuff" and "is this just generic nostalgic 80s songs?". For me, it's a solid 3-stars. However, since I discovered this band on this list with their first album, it's strange that I gave five stars for the first, with much more solid work, and three to this one, but I'm not a suitable parameter when giving stars/points, so I accept my incongruencies 😁.
Never knew how much ska was on this album
The horns are so good, why add strings? More of the same from their debut. I like the idea of Dexys more than the music, but it's all fun and enthusiastic. I guess it's a 3.
Hmm trur eg må hørra på da igjen snart
Just ok, it did start pretty weak and then picked up in the back half quite a bit.
Slow dive and MBV are better
Nothing wrong it, just plain. Come on Eileen isn't enough to save a whole album.
It's unique, but gets kinda boring after a while
Well I have to say I'm very surprised by this album. Knew the song Eileen, but nothing else. I enjoyed a lot this album. There were times I thought this guy's voice sounded a lot like Robert Smith of the Cure. Different than my usual listening and glad I now this band has better songs than just Eileen. Solid 3-3.5.
Ima dobrih stvari! Oh, nisam znao da je njihova Come On Eileen. The Celtic Soul Brothers, All in All i Come On Eileen su mi favoriti i stavljeni u plejlistu osamdesetih.
"it sounds like this band played the same song in a bunch of different ways until they found one that white people would play at every event" Nah but for real I was pleasantly surprised.
Really fun energy. I love the lead singer's willingness to get goofy and over-the-top in his vocals. A true entertainer. “Come on Eileen” is a classic that I fell in love with as a kid after listening to some "Best of the 80's" mix CD my sister had lying around the house. It’s still a great song. The cover of "Jackie Wilson Said" is really good too - it's a great fit for this group.
Nice fun album. I think "Come on Eileen" being one of the most recognizable songs of all time helps out the rating, but I feel like it's a fair 3/5. Singer has a great voice with such an interesting primary timbre and he is obviously confident in using it and experimenting with his voice and all of this is great. "Fun" is the word that keeps coming to my head.
+Poppy upbeat songs for when you're in that kind of mood +Good singing voice -Not very captivating -Nothing is as catchy as come on Eileen
I didn't listen to everything but the ones I did listen to were kind of just alright
Meh
Come on Eileen is a fun song with a cool rhythm change.
Not bad. Come on Eileen is by far the best song though
Come on Eileen
Check out the live version of Come On Eileen on their VEVO. You won't regret it.
An album best know for its big hit come on Eileen. The rest of the album had a similar sound to that song but nothing nearly as catchy or entertaining. The band has a decent pop sound and also sounds like they have Irish or Scottish influence. 5.8/10
I enjoyed the very english vibe and folky pop songs. Come On Eileen stands above the rest, but most of then are enjoyable pop songs. Pleasantly surprised.
Pretty good, but often feels a bit too safe. Wish they utilised more of the female backing vocals you find in the last few tracks. Still, ‘Come on Eileen’ is a bop and no one can deny that. Favourite Tracks: - Come on Eileen - The Celtic Soul Brothers - Until I Believe in My Soul Overall Rating: 3/5 (B- / C+)
was a nice vibe. Didn't know they were the band behind come on Eileen
agradável, som bem feito
Surprised by how entertaining this was
Dubious, TSOP equally good as Come on Eileen.
Some good stuff and some that is kinda corny and mildly irritating. 3 I guess
More enjoyable than a lot Irish/celtic albums offered up on the list. Of course, this album will be forever known for the infectious "Come On Eileen", a once in a lifetime banger that shot to number one in the US during a remarkably competitive year. It also branded Dexys Midnight Runners as one-hit wonders in America. This album suggests they were more than that, although don't listen to the wan covers of "T.S.O.P." or "Jackie Wilson Said" for inspiration. They deserved to have greater success here in the States, but I don't believe Dexys should have multiple albums on the list. This one can stay.
Has that song Come On Eileen but not much else.
Come on Eileen was the highlight
Better than I expected!
Interesting mix of folk and pop and maybe rock?
Interesting, irish folk music and Ska horns. Upbeat songs, some driving bass lines. Overall decent album
Really cool sounding album.
They have a distinctive sound that is fun to listen to but not something I would seek out for regular listening
COME ON EILEEN!
This band is one of those where the songs really don’t sound like what the band are gonna be… The album opens with the Celtic soul brothers it’s a well put together song with great instrumentation and the sample at the start is cool but it’s not overly that special. The ooh sounds on lets make this precious are annoying, also the bridge is wired but the only highlight is those trumpet noises. Then is the rampaging waltz All in all its good probably my favourite track so far as yeah it’s fairly pub-laddy but at least it’s distinctive. Jackie Wilson said is a solid cover the most memorable bit is the singing at the start but the rest of the song still hits fine. Side A ends with old a depressed drunken piano track which forms into a slightly hopeful yet gloomy thing definitely my favourite! Side B starts with plan B a two parter initially a slow piano song solid but not amazing them then after about a minute it goes into a medley into a rather fun poppy song another top track. I’ll show you is like let’s make this precious but without the annoying ooh’s so it actually works perfectly as a song not an all time favourite but enjoyable. The gospel like backing vocals over the typical dexys tune makes Liars A to E quite a unique sonic for this album but without any of that this song is devoid of any specialities still good though. The penultimate track on the album is the longest song on the album Until I believe in my soul, quite a heavenly song a great way to make this album slow down until… One of the weirdest choices for an album closer ever come on Eileen it’s a pub laddish single that everyone knows I can’t fault it but does the song serve as a goodbye. Solid but not great.
Not too bad. Most of it was fun, some of it got old.
Come on Eileen all I liked
Come On Eileen is an absolute banger and a classic, but the rest of this album makes sense that it has fallen away. None of the other songs had quite the kick but I still enjoyed listening to them.
We all know Dexys for the one song, and thank goodness the one song is on here! There are a couple others that I enjoyed too though, including "Until I Believe in My Soul" for its sudden divergence into jazz territory. Not an album that I'd want to relisten to as a whole, but the standouts are nice, I mean, c'mon, Eileen. Favorite tracks: Come On Eileen, Until I Believe In My Soul, Plan B. Album art: Have definitely seen this one a bunch over the years, a sad sack of a man. Must be waiting on Eileen to love him, or maybe his application to be a Midnight Runner was rejected. It's a cool cover. 3/5
Love this one. Finest blend of folk and pub rock
Struggled to know what to make of this one - Everything about it points to me liking it, but I just... don't. Sometimes you have to just accept you're not compatible, but I can't deny what an impact this album has had, there are some solid tracks on there. Maybe I've just heard Come on Eileen too many times.
Kevin Rowland is the worst part of this album.
English folk soul. Can't deny the tunes here - for a bunch of people who looked like homeless art students they can put a song together. Best Tracks: Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile); Liars A to E; Come On Eileen
It was okay. I of course knew Come On Aileen and do enjoy that song, but the rest didn’t inspire me much.
All in could hear on every song was “Come On Eileen.” What should recognizable voice. Overall fun album and band, but not one I’ll revisit much or at all.
I listened to Come On Eileen several times today. Didn’t vibe with the rest of this
Plenty of fun, bouncy, uplifting Celt-folk rock, but I did feel every track apart from the last suffered a bit by 'Not Being Come On Eileen'. Still, a decent listen, and now my jeans are rolled up
Violin pop
Better than expected, knew more songs than I thought
This is an intriguing listen, it's a quirky left field fun upbeat album with seemingly the kitchen sink thrown into the production. I really enjoyed these aspects. What let's it down is the lead vocals which sits uneasily with the music. It was still quite enjoyable though.
A good fun knees up of an album. No idea what he's muttering about, mind. Do you think the singer intonates like this at all times? While asking for a carrier bag in the supermarket or boarding a bus?
3.5 / 5 Most was new to me. Of course, the world knows Come on Eileen and I always loved that song. Classic: Come on Eileen Other standouts: Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven), Until I Believe in My Soul, Very Good: The Celtic Soul Brothers, Let's Make This Precious, All in All,
Come on Eileen, yeh I swear, this is a good album. Always liked that song and the rest of the album has that happy vibe.
Meh
These guys were massive. Even now 'Come on Eileen' is played at the end of wedding receptions (this is the one where your old uncle Dick puts his tie on his head and joins the dancefloor). I'd heard a few of the other tracks over the years but this is the first time i've listened to the whole album. I think they were attempting to create a myth of their own centred around the band with dungarees and dreadlocks but it didn't really pan out and they eventually fizzled out. Even so it's clean healthy music- drum and bass with horns accompanying the vocals. It's fun to listen to and a lot better than I though it would be (album fillers around the big hits).
27th April 2022 Listened in the office on first day back. Book club at Stevie’s in the evening. They’re not just Dexy’s midnight runners! Actually good fun, a little bit punky/ska tinged which was surprising.
ok
Trevligt
Likes better than the other album by same artists
I had no idea Bobcat Goldthwait sang “Come on Eileen”
How do you rate an album when it’s the single that counts. Come on Eileen!
One hit wonder but there’s some other standouts here. That said this album is way too long
Surprisingly good - not my type of music but good tunes and of it’s time.
Classic album for the most part but I did feel it dragged along towards the end. There are a few gems on there I had forgotten about and of course Come On Eileen which is close to perfect even if you have heard it eleventy-thousand times and are sick of it. The album is patchy in places which let's it down
Didn't recognize the band name but upon hearing the first track realized they must also sing Come On Eileen. And sure enough it is on this album. Interesting sound. New wave meets Celtic folk with the horns from a ska band.
Interesting to put Come on Eileen in context. It fits right in with the album, though.
Not bad
Pièces préférées: Come On Eileen et Plan B
The singles are exceptional, the rest a bit... Meh
Too british. Kind of like a cheap, but slightly more cheerful Smiths. Don't get the hype about Come On Eileen (had not heard it before). 2.5
Ihan lepposa pläjäys
Hauska spektaakkeli
Perhaps wisely, "Come On Eileen" is the last track, ensuring that this iconic hit doesn't overshadow the rest of the tracks. The album is a lot better than I was expecting, showing much more to Dexys than just that one song. It also features "Jackie Wilson Said" which was on The Young Ones!
Not unpleasant; still, I doubt that I'd be drawn to actively listening to this album ever again.
Not too bad an album. Obviously new the mega hit Come On Eileen so was looking forward to the rest. Didnt mind this one.
meh felt like a mash of several different artists, but it wasn’t bad. sexy slay album cover
had low expectations but really not that bad 3.5
Decent
You know the one song. The question is whether you should also listen to other songs. (6/10) FT: Come On Eileen, Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)
At first I thought “Come On Eileen” is good, but come on... But then I noticed I’m humming the tunes.
When I saw this popping up today my 1st reaction was really? Growing up in the 80s, Come On Eileen was a ubiquitous anthem of every disco. However I enjoyed this a lot. Just not sure of its classic status.
I like the mix of traditional Irish music and an R &B/should sound.
Pretty cool! Very good Van Morrison cover.
Another album that's just fine. A couple of good songs, and Come On Eileen is a banger, but overall it's fairly forgetable.
2.5/5
I was so up and down with this! Obviously come on Eileen is an anthem. However, I can see why they might have been a one hit wonder. I didn’t like their sad songs. I think they should stay in their lane of fun punchy tuuuuuunes! The horns are brill all over this album and everyone knows I can get down with the trumpets LOL! And tracks like Dubious and T.S.O.P. Absolutely beaut such a bop love it. Almost reminds me of Scruff! I can’t go above three though when I didn’t like maybe half the album, shame shame.
Poor Dexy's Midnight Runners where their 3/5 of their top songs on Spotify are Come on Eileen. But its certified one of the best songs of all time I'd say. The rest of the album was pretty fun but nothing stand out like that.
Mostly 80s nonsense but not bad I suppose. All sounded the same to me but good fun I guess. Can't deny Come On Eileen is excellent
Falsetto and fiddles, swaggering saxophones blasting in time to my heartbeat gait, oh my! So this is where that "Come on Eileen" song comes from. Huh.
3.1 - decent selection of fun and danceable songs to singalong to, especially Come On Eileen and the. An Morrison cover, but another inclusion that seems to highlight the British-centric nature of this list.
New wave
3.4 - Having been underwhelmed by other one-hit wonders appearing on this list (e.g. A-Ha), I came to this expecting mediocrity but actually ended up sort of enjoying this record. I hear elements of gypsy jazz, ska and Irish folk, which somewhat justifies its place for me since "Come on Eileen" has long ago worn out its welcome.
3/5
Pleasant but generally unremarkable - a few fun tracks and easy to work to as it's not very distracting. Enjoyable cover of Come on Eileen That's the best I can say about it unfortunately
Birmingham bias definitely here, and come on Eileen just about scrapes this up to a 3 for me.
Aaight
The late 70s/early 80s onslaught continues. Come on Eileen is great. Singers voice is not. Plenty of energy. Have heard worse.
Pop. Folk. Alegre.
So, Irish soul slaps harder than you’d think. I just begrudge them the Mumford-spawn.
3 stars. It has interesting instrumentation but not as interesting lyrically
Just didn't grab me
Nothing special, background music. All sound fairly similar.
Some of the tracks are really good but I don't like Kevin Rowland's voice. Also reminds me of dancing on the tables in the Cellar Bar at B'ham Uni, which I prefer to forget.
Well...this is fun, isn't it? A thunderbolt right up the bum. A pop triumph. If it was a footballer, it'd be Jay Jay Okocha.
Good fun energy. Come on Eileen is an obvious classic. All sounds a bit dorky to me though.
Our second Dexys Midnight Runners album. Seriously? I'm definitely starting to see the UK bent the list has that others have mentioned in reviews. It's not bad I guess but did I really have to hear this before I die? Strangely enough my favorite track is the last one Reminisce with all the talking.
Come On Eileen is the best track on here, it's a total banger. The rest unfortunately fall flat, "Searching for the Young Soul Rebels" was a better album for me.
Come On Eileen was the best track on here, and several of the others sounded really similar (probably due to the way the lead singer sings). It's... OK for me. 3 stars.
Didn’t make as much of an impression as I anticipated
Sounds dated these days.
Gets a 3 on the merit of Come On Eileen alone. Only one other recognizable song, but spotify was missing a bunch of tracks. Pretty folky at times, poppy at other times.
3.5
Never thought there was something beyond “Come On Eileen“ - surprisingly good!
Overall I liked the album. But I didn't love it. I really liked the first and last song.
Wouldn't play it on purpose but had no desire to turn it off while it was on. Come on Eileen is obviously an all time classic.
Amusant album met veel vrolijke nummers. Af en toe wat minder zuiver. Het laatste liedje is wel een klassiekertje
I guess this band would fall into the category of "one hit wonder". Quite the hit though and one that has not worn on me. It's a decent LP with good flow and a good variety of instruments with the strings and horns. While the strings and horns sounded like they were all one big happy family, I read that the horn players all quit after the strings were invited on board and a fair amount of arm twisting was required to keep them around for a few concerts to promote the album. A sign of a good musician is to forget about the drama when instruments are in hand.
This genre of music is not what I typically gravitate towards, but I can't deny the infectious fun of this album. Found a couple new songs I liked but it did feel too long and repetitive at points. Come on Eileen still slaps though.
HOLY MOLY.
Can see why they were a one hit wonder. Decent, but not great.
- joyous, fun folk/ska blend - more than a one-hit wonder album
slaps but the songs melt together
I want to like it more, but not a fan of K Rowland’s vocals. But the sound sure brings me back!
Come on Eileen is the best track here. They have a good sound and the tracks are unique enough but not grabby to have a bunch of good cuts from it.
is this a good album or a good song? Most tracks have sub-1mil plays... and then there's the one with 350mil+
No comments not my type of album.
Great fuse the violin, piano and drums. But very common music.
Good, soulful pop. Eileen is quite different to others.
Sounds really fun, unfortunately just didnt connect with me.
Actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would, some good instrumentals. Vocals can get grating though and eileen is very overplayed
I spent my youth gallivanting about town in my dungarees and red neckerchief inspired by none other than dexies midnight runners. Lock up your daughters!
.
Quite a fun album. Good throughout. Like the singers voice.
Elvis Costello, but more of a country-ska kind of vibe. A nice mishmash of sounds. Pretty radio-friendly.
DMR has an interesting and characteristic sound-- I really like the use of horns and strings-- but the album does sort of drag at times. It's good, but I don't know that it made me really feel compelled to come back to anything other than 'come on eileen'
Never heard any of this besides Come on Eileen. I liked it. Some ska vibes with the bass lines and horn section.
Musicianship, instrumentation and production/mixing deserve a top score. The singing was irritating and the lack of catchy melodies hardly made any individual songs stand out. The length of the album and the lack of a climax makes the album drag on a bit. I would watch this live but as a listening experience, it was average as a whole.
Well this is something I have not heard before, its not ska, its not big band. Its got that really 80's over the top theatric voice that I can never get into. But I enjoyed the listen from a new experience stand point. This might be the most interesting music made in the 80's that we have heard so far. trumpets and falsetto out of 5
not bad, don't think I'll ever listen to it again.
Ganske interessant. Noe litt annet enn vi har hatt her tidligere. En slags Jethro Tull lite. Mistet interessen et lite stykke inn. Ble litt sånn "I get it, kom deg videre". Svak 3.
I like 'Come on Eileen' as much as the next person, in fact probably more, I think it's a class song. But really not sure why this album is one you should hear before you die? I didn't dislike it, his voice is very distinct, the horns are fun, the fiddles remind me of an 80s Arcade Fire, but a lot of the songs either sound exactly the same or are forgettable filler. There are phrases in some songs that are repeated in `Come on Eileen`. It's also too long.
Enjoyed it, mostly just for that one song....
Come on Eileen is a 5 star track
Slightly better than I expected. 5-6/10
was an ok album, I've only ever heard "Come On Eileen" there were some other good songs on the album, but nothing too crazy good.
Honestly, so many of these British rock bands from the 80s and 90s just sound the same to me. And this one has some really annoying songs where they repeat the same thing over and over again and just wear me out.
Fav: Old, Come on Eileen
good, but abit same same
Familiarity:1/10 Notes: to think this band had a huge hit. I'm still kinda amazed Real Rating: 6/10
This album was better than I thought it would be. I'd put "Come on Eileen" on a 1001 best singles to listen to, but maybe not on the album list. But, hey, I didn't make the list.
A unique sound. Enjoyed it
Pretty good though so many songs missing from spotify
3rd star because come on eileen
this was an ok album. has come on eileen. spotify doesn't seem to have all the songs. makes it hard to rate.
Surprisingly fun album its not all about "come on Eileen"
Interesting to hear this subgenre but in the end all the songs were too close to each other and unremarkable
This album is nothing amazing but I’ve always liked its just a very fun listen for me 7/10
not bad. a little elo/modest mouse/bowie
Never thought to listen to them beyond Eileen, but I like it
Took me until halfway thru this album to realize Dexy was an early pop aka punk band. 2.5
I wasn't really sure what to expect with this album. Seeing "Come On Eileen" but not knowing any other song from the band makes me think they're a one hit wonder. And that also means I don't really know what their other music will sound like. But this is pretty true to the same style as their big hit. And unfortunately, it doesn't really break out of the one-hit wonder bucket. The album is fine. Come On Eileen is still an incredible song, but the rest isn't really that. It's not baaaaaad, but I don't think I needed to listen to this. Favorite Song(s): Come On Eileen
This is just another textbook example of an album following the trope of "a bunch of boring nonsense nobody cares about just for the one really famous song to be right at the end." For what it's worth, I do think that Come On Eileen is a good song, a great song in fact. It's just overplayed as hell and it's just not worth having to sit through the entire rest of the album to get there. If the other songs were more interesting I could easily have genuinely really liked this, but I just can't look past how generic it is except for literally one song.
pretty obnoxious. who tf asked for celtic soul music im good bro. aside from the 1 song everyone knows from this album this is not worth checking out
Standouts Come on Eileen Dubious
They crawled so Pulp could fly.
Pretty cheesy. Come On Eileen is okay.
Aw I loved Come On Eileen growing u- ONE HOUR AND SEVENTEEN MINUTES?
look man. sometimes the one hit wonder's a one hit wonder for a reason. yes i already watched the "one hit wonderland" on come on eileen. lighting in a bottle they attempt to recapture 9 times. more AOR than previously thought. call them Brighton. more than a feeling, innit. 2.3-2.5.
Ehh
327/1089 just not a fan of Dexys. i find the twee-ness and vocal style especially to be a bit cringeworthy. Come On Eileen is the obvious highlight and works as a soundtrack song but otherwise i’m not fussed 34/100
Falling asleep whilst listening
so-so but has its vibe for sure
Mehhh preferred the last one
Unfortunate that we've had double dexys as I think it put me off the album more than I otherwise would have been!/.
Music for Uncle Knobhead at a party dad dancing with his tie tied around his forehead. 2/5 24/2/26
I like Come on Eileen as much as the next guy, but did not need an entire album of this.
Now I see why they are running at midnight, they’re too embarrassed to show their faces during the day. There were some fun moments but this album sounds like what it feels to wear dress socks to the gym. Ie goofy as hell
Turns out 'C'mon Eileen' is exactly how much Dexys Midnight Runners you need.
More like 2.5
2.5
Lät typ som man förväntar sig. Inget som riktigt fastnade. Inte toppklass men inte kasst? Svårrankat. 2,5
yes, come on Eileen is a hit totally subjective but I could not stand the singer's voice after a few songs
I knew that one song at the end.
ehhhhhh. there’s nothing technically wrong with this, but jesus is it a slog. old british pop rock just really isn’t my thing, and the random hollering, squeaky horns, and chunky, repetitive piano solos (plus the annoying habit of songs ending and then starting again MULTIPLE times) made sure i was constantly checking how long was left the entire time. 2 stars because Come On Eileen is unfortunately still a banger
I love Come On, Eileen but the rest of this album was a bit of a miss for me. None of the other songs really stood out and I didn’t really care for his voice much. 2.5/5
Annoying piece of music. Was annoyed by Come On Eileen my entire life, but that's still the best thing on here.
It was meh until Come On Eileen took it down a star. That song triggers me - it's just very sad pub DJ
Meh
Only made it to 2 based on Come On Eileen
Come On Eileen? But where on Eileen?
My dirty secret is that I've never been a huge fan of Come On, Eileen. This album didn't do much to change my opinion. It's fine, there's clear talent at work, but for the most part it didn't do anything for me. The one thing I do appreciate is the clear folk/Celtic music influence that pops up throughout the album...it's just that what they're doing with that isn't really my style.
I kind of like his voice but the songs don't do anything for me.
It's a very specific genre, but not one I enjoy in the context of how I typically listen to music. It has its own high energy that doesn't match how I vibe.
My partner described this album as a kind of hell where every song is almost, but not actually, Come On, Eileen. I think it was generally pretty fun, and had a unique and consistent sound. I think I got fatigued by the plaintive and playful voice of the lead singer.
Violins are nice but those don't save this album from being really mid ground. The whole album is marked by a hit song and it's sound.
So very 80's, that it's almost painful. Outside of their hit song, I've not heard them almost at all and the prominence of the violin was a bit surprising.
Come on Eileen, why everything sounds the same? The singer's voice reminds me of Goofy.
I don't know, I didn't really understand this album. Come on Eileen is of course the only song most people have ever heard. And rest wasn't really something I thought I have been missing out on.
My rating 2.3. One hit wonders.
Come On Eileen really carries this
It’s like old school Amish ska
This is another record on this list just because it had one super humongous hit. This just isn't good.
Couldn’t vibe with the songs
Non. C’est pas très bon. Come on eileen bon succès mais à part ça c’est assez bland, faussement joyeux.
boring and kinda unc
Fun pop record I never listened to before. Obviously very well know Come On Eileen, altough we should all admit that the Save Farris is much better. The combo of new wave and their particular celtic influences make a unique sound. Sadly i'm not quite interested in listening to it again.
2.4 2x not great, but i still like come on eileen
Madness, The Specials) gjorde med skamusik samtidigt.
Never heard this all the way through and I doubt I will ever again. I did appreciate the fact that the hit was buried within the album, and yeah, if it ever comes on in a party atmosphere I’m gonna sing it, but I just don’t like his voice.
Everyone has, of course, heard "Come on Eileen" - which is a fine enough song albeit overplayed. I was interested to hear what else this band would produce, especially with the lead singer's unique voice, but it didn't really hook me. I didn't hate it, but I was disappointed. - Heard before? Nothing besides "Eileen". - Will I listen again? No. - Does it inspire me to listen to more of this artist? Nope.
As fun as Come On Eileen is, it never occurred to me to find out if they had any other music. The lead singer has an overly-dramatic vocal style, and I gotta say I'm not a fan. The horns on this remind me a little of 80s ska like Madness. In many spots, the drummer sounded like he wished he was dead. If it weren't for Come On Eileen, I would rate this a 1-star or lower. In fact, now that I've heard the rest of the record, I think I like the song less.
800million+ listens to Eileen plus some other songs.
This was completely fine. I liked a lot of the string instrumentation going on in this, it was very unique to this album and I wouldn’t say I could think of many others like it in that way. The blend of styles on this is nice, but I wouldn’t say be lying if I said it all worked as songs sort of blended with each other in certain ways. I’m not sure I was a fan of the vocals, as much as I appreciate the vulnerability of them, it did begin to get a little tedious. Yeah some good tracks but won’t be revisiting
Sounds like some shit Pat would listen to
For whatever reason, I remember Emma Watson's character calling Come On Eileen "Actually Good Music" in the The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's a great song, the rest I could go the rest of my life without hearing again. I especially hated the mix of the chorus, the singing, and the instrumentation on Liars A to E.
Much like “Smash” had Joe and Mitchell questioning the entries on this list, this one has me going down the conspiracy rabbit hole. Dexys Midnight Runners is a one-hit wonder band, so much so that even though I’ve heard “Come On, Eileen” as many times as any other person with three decades on this planet, I’d never even heard this band’s name before. So it’s completely baffling that there’s not just one, but THREE albums of theirs on this list!? My current explanation is that the maker of this last had these three DMR albums on record growing up in Britain. He loved them. He played them every day. And as he got older and became a music journalist, he grew resentful that people laughed at his love for DMR at industry parties. And so then, he set out to make this list and get it published in a book, so that Dexys Midnight Runners could take their rightful place beside The Beatles, John Coltrane, and The Offspring. Anyway, 2 stars because “Come On, Eileen” is great.
one hit wonder lmao
Old...and sounds like it.
The horns on Dubious were pretty good. And Come on Eileen is certainly catchy, but that much couldn't bring anything beyond a 2 here. Some of it was so screechy and cringey that it was hard to listen to. And the vocalist is kind of like a silly version of Robert Smith that was grating on me. I ended up happily skipping the final few tracks
