Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Cool, fun album. Like the different strings and Celtic sounds. Pretty good Van Morrison cover in there - Jackie Wilson
"First let's hear somebody sing me a record That cries pure and true No not those guitars, they're too noisy and crude The kind that convinces, refuses to leave" (Let's make this precious) "And you'll hum this tune forever" (Come on Eileen) HostiA QUÉ SORPRESA ESTE DISCO.
I thought they were one hit wonders but the rest of the album is very strong. Loved the strings and horns
Great album. One of my favourites from the 80s
Good shit, me gustó la mezcla de sonidos
I was listening to this album thinking I knew that voice, and that the music was good but nothing special until I heard it, this album is heavily carried by Come On Eileen, if it wasn't for that song the score would be lower, although I did appreciated how varied the instrumentation and the melodies were
A very good find, those strings do really belong there, even if the record drags a little it is outstanding
A lot better than I thought it would be. And actually quite like Come on Eileen now, whereas before it annoyed me.
Full of big tunes and big horns Plan B, Liars A to E and Dubious are highlights
come on eileen!
Fun! I should've listened to more of their songs after I loved Come On Eileen. That's still my favorite, but the rest has a similar fun vibe, fiddle part, and that great English singing voice.
I never really thought of them as a British band (having only ever heard Come on Eileen before), but they have a fun and consistent sound that occasionally reminded me of XTC.
nice!
I mean 'Come on Eileen' is a legendary song and this album is actually a bit of fun.
Have a couple of listens. More to it than a one hit wonder. His voice sounds like a fun version of the cure. Interesting back story with all of the line up changes and affected image the main dude seems a bit of a control freak. And Dexy is a drug? Cool.
Got some classics on it, love the accents.
"Come on Eileen" I had never heard any of the other songs.
Surprisingly good album. Not just a one-hit wonder. The Van cover is good, and Until I Believe is great, too.
Come on Eileen is a 10/10. Everything else is a 6 plus. So, 7/10 FT: need you ask?
Boy, these guys really got lucky with Come on Eileen.
songwriting isn't particularly notable but the instrumentation and vocal performance are enough to keep it from getting stale.
Fun and poppy and a good cover of a Van Morrison song. I usually like my singers who over-sing constantly to actually have a nice singing voice. That wasn't my favorite part
This album would be good if they cut it in half and played come on Eileen twice. Otherwise, way too long and way too repetitive.
good songs nice album just before Kevin went on the road to insanity
Favorite Track: Come On Eileen
really liked this at first; great instrumentals and a kind of fun voice. sadly i grew tired of it (especially the voice, but i think the style got a little bit repetitive too) after 5-6 songs
Celtic pop blue eyed soul band known for "Come On Eileen". They're interesting because of singer Kevin Rowland's voice and large use of horns and strings. His voice is dramatic similar to Freddie Mercury and Danny Elfman. Come On Eileen is still a great song but there are also other good ones on this album.
Some of the songs on here really annoyed me, but there’s some more delightful ones that I enjoyed. Plus it’s got Come On Eileen which is a classic so it gets a point for that.
It's a fun album with a big hit. Solid 3/5.
Come on Eileen jumpscare
It was ok
A very British album. Bit like The Pogues but poppier and more soulful. Just reminds me of an evening at the pub. Don’t think this is my cup of tea but it took me down a rabbit hole of Northern Soul music which is appreciated.
I enjoyed
This was okay. There were a few songs that stood out but nothing I would write home about.
Better than expected.
This was pretty fun, even though Come on Eileen steals the show.
Come On Eileen is a classic. And the rest of it was just fine
did he cook lowkey? 3.5
Really fun album IMO. Not one i'd come back to all the time but enjoyable all the way through.
solid 3.5
This is a pretty mixed bag - from Scottish folk music to glam rock. Maybe a bit too mixed for me.
Come On Eileen was a huge hit when I was 18, played in every pub and disco endlessly, a great song if you're a teenager and you're hammered. I still love to hear it on the radio to this day, Jackie Wilson was another huge hit, but I don't think I've ever listened to the whole album before. Good soul songs, with great strings and horns. It's only a week since this app threw up the Dexy's debut album for me and I'll reiterate what I said there - can't make out much of the lyrics Kevin, what are you singing about?
(4/7) sounds like an Irish pub
Better than their other album on this list. The Celtic influence and feel was fun. Not sure I agree they should have 2 albums on this list - more of a one hit wonder to me if I’m honest. That being said I didn’t hate listening to this album but won’t rush to do it again.
The third star is for Come on Eileen. (Also two Dexys Midnight Runners in a row??)
Is this the third Dexys album on this list? Thankfully it’s the more engaging of the triad - better it comes around late than never. Jackie Wilson Said was upbeat & happy, this was my early favourite moment from the album. I even prefer it - quite substantially - over the Van Morrison original. The random sax solo in Until I Believe In My Soul was pretty epic. Of course Eileen was the standout. Altogether, a listenable, decent, yet slightly annoying novelty record deserving of a solid 3/5.
Do what on Eileen?
Why is the worst song on the album the most popular!?
3,5, tegen 4 aan
Very fun Irish inspired pop rock album, cool variety of instruments used, but gets very hit or miss
Honestly, their first album was actually better (minus Come On Eileen) and had a ska base that would have worked better than what they went with here. Not a massive fan of the Folk approach that they went for, but Come on Eileen makes the album worthy of a three.
The last Dexys album I had on here (Don't Turn Me Down) was a dreadfully slow album brim to brim with mid 80s production cheese. I couldn't do it. But this, the album that got the hit Come on Eileen. I enjoyed this one quite a bit! Not a 5 star album and I'm hard to find justification for 4 stars but this is the Dexys album you need on the list. Not any other.
Fun Irish boos
Temp
The big track (Come On Eileen) is fun and is part of the early 80's cannon. The rest of the album is an OK listen but I don't know if it deserves a spot on this list. The track "Until I Believe in my Soul" is surprisingly soulful, reminds me of some Beck songs.
I don't hate it, but I'm less than convinced that producing one big hit, around 40 years ago, is grounds for inclusion on this list.
I don’t know how to review this. It wasn’t bad? I liked bits of it. But I think this process has broken me because I don’t think I would have said that if this was the first album i listened to. 3 stars while I remain confused.
Don’t know anything outside of Come On Eileen which is a wedding classic for a reason. I actually really enjoyed this. Was close to giving 4 stars a few songs on the back half started to drag.
Come on Eileen! Immediate warmth for scream-singing in Ireland at various points throughout my 20s, Molly, and that manic pixie dream girl af dance scene in perks of being a wallflower. His voice is doing it for me. Giggling; per Wikipedia, “Rowland thought it was "important to have a vocal style", he later recalled, "and I had the idea of putting that 'crying' voice on"…”
liked this a lot
A slightly grudging three stars, because I loathe Come On Eileen and always hope I'll never hear it again. But I rate Dexys as a band. I wish they'd stuck with brass, and hadn't discovered dungarees. But most of the songs on here held my attention.
Second song is really lovely with the strings and brass and driving bass and drums. 3 is also pretty special. A new wave punk. Old is also a great great song. 9 is a great song aswell. Generally enjoyed side one more. Come on Eileen is an undeniable banger. A very nice refreshing album. Really like the different take on British new wave. The middle has some not as existing songs, but the highlights are high. Another 3
Couple of classic tracks
They have a fun upbeat sound that is different and unique. But nothing was amazing.
I might need more time with this one, but on first listen, I like the energy but wasn’t generally wowed.
It’s not bad, but “Come On Eileen” is the only truly great moment. The lead singer’s downward squeak thing Is so weird. I also just feel like Dexy’s Midnight Runners act like they’re better than you, and I find that off putting.
This offers a great selection of songs that I would come back and listen to. 7/10
The hate here is thicker than the dungaree overalls!
Festive
I have to admit to living a jig at a do when Come on Eileen comes on even if it's not cool anymore however I could take or leave the rest . Feels a bit dated now .
fun!
Not a bad album, it’s a little samey. I enjoyed the listen, but again the tracks mostly seem the same. There’s some experimentation or movement in the the songs too, sometimes it works and sometimes it feels random.
nice enough
Cool. Far more wavey than I expected, nice vibes throughout.
Celtic rock meets New Wave. I remember cutting some rug to some of these tunes back in the 80s. There is nothing particularly interesting about this music, but it is fun and that is all it is trying to be. So instead of trying to think too deeply about this album, I decided to just chill and have fun. Sometimes that is enough.
Unique album probably unique at the time of release so it was something different and fresh to listen to. Its a fun more pop ska with their celtic heritage showing on all songs.it was really fun and a good mood changer for the algorythms of albums I have been getting.
Outside of the last two tracks, this was mid as hell. 2.5/5
A bit of a slog to get to Come On, Eileen. Not unworth it...
Alright. It all sounds like Come On Eileen, which is a compliment! That song has many great sounds and qualities
trying to mind my resentment for having to listen to three albums by this band (I can now confidently say I needed to listen to 0 dexys midnight runners albums before I died...) but all in all Come On Eileen is awesome and thats sorta all i gleaned from these three albums
i love come on eileen
Solid, not bad
This was like if the Talking Heads and Hall & Oates got together to do an upbeat Celtic soul/rock album. Most of this ranged from alright to pretty good, with the obvious standout track being ‘Come On Eileen’. There’s some instrumental tracks that are pretty good, and the group keeps the energy up throughout the album. Another solid 3/5, there just wasn’t any other songs to elevate it to a 4.
If you got an AI to extrapolate Come On Eileen into a whole album, it would be this. Which, is fine I guess? But a bit exhausting.
3/4
Good
I knew the obvious tunes but otherwise this was all new to me and I enjoyed it without loving it. It's perfectly suitable music to pop on to tap your toe to whilst working.
The one Dexys Midnight Runners album that can qualify for this list, in my opinion. The songs are moving and melodic. It reminds me a bit of the structure of "A Night at the Opera", you are just waiting for the ball to drop and explode for the famous song and this album does just that with the mega-hit that everyone knows "Come on Eileen". 3/5- I would listen to this again, though some tracks aren't that memorable
Not sure the voicing works all the time, but when it does it contributes well to the genre-busting that makes everything here more noticeable. Can there be a glam Celtic soulish sound?
I’m up and down with this record. Come on Eileen always has this divisive power, where you are wanna sing along to it or you just groan when you hear those first bars. I was always a Dexys fan as long as I forgot about that hit. They at least are fun and quirky and distinctive.
One hit wonders. Too bad, good sound, and music.
It's round two for Dexys Midnight Runners. The last album of theirs I got was thr I'll fated Don't Stand Me Down, which embraced more experimental song structures at the cost of a less interesting sound. But even though it was an admirable effort, it ended up with the worst attributes of both sides where the songs were both incredibly messy *and* boring. To start, I'll say that Too-Rye-Ay is substantially better than Don't Stand Me Down. But the early, careful steps Dexys makes towards that later territory still don't work. For the positives, this album showcases a really enjoyable Celtic folk inspired pub rock sound. The Celtic Soul Brothers, Let's Make This Precious, All In All, and Old are a great time. These songs are a little cheesy, but a lot of earnest fun and imminently listenable. And If Dexys were content with this, I think everything would have been fine. But, Kevin Rowland fell into a weirdly common pitfall. That is to say, he wasn't content with making pop-punk adjacent, Celtic rock music, and became obsessed with honoring his favorite soul albums by trying to become an inheritor of their sound. This, kept, happening, I genuinely think there may have been something in the water at this place, in this time. Anyways, in my opinion, it never worked for these guys, and it doesn't work here. I think the soul inspired songs that really populate side 2 are largely a slog, even if they're generally well executed. Rowland just can't capture the joy of the original wave of the genre. Amyways, Dexys do ultimately end up leaving a good taste in your mouth though, we end on Come On Eileen, a really good song that's really funny to me due to a complex web of inside jokes. Although, since it released, Dexys have been trying to outrun this song's capacity to make them one hit wonders. And it pretty much made them utterly collapse for a while there. Although, in the modern world, it seems as though they may have made their piece. I will say that even though this is a mixed bag for me, I really enjoyed it.The best stuff is a ton of fun, and the worst stuff can't kill my high.
The other tracks on the album didnt live up to the expectation set by Come on Eileen. Not bad but left me a bit disappointed.
New Wave? Blue eyed soul? Northern Soul? Celtic folk? Pick two.
At its best it's very good in parts, not bad, worth a listen
Not my thing, but still a neat peak into pop music coming out of Northern England in the 80s. I hope their other 2 albums are worth the spots they have in this book/list though, because this album alone hasnt really sold me on them. 6.5/10.
I find the overall sound pretty interesting even if it doesn't step out of it much. Come On Eileen works amazingly as the final track at least.
6.5/10 Come On Eileen is cool but the rest isn't very different, it's not bad though.
I always thought there was a comma in the title of, “Come On Eileen.” The fact that there isn’t changes everything. Seriously, that song is so well known that every track sounded like the singer wanted to belt it out. But the instrumentation and arrangements carried things along well enough to keep it interesting. 3.5* rounding down for punctuation.
It's--Come On Eileen?! oh em gee! I didn't know they did other songs! I liked "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven)" and Old was good, too. Overall a fun album but not one I'm likely to revisit. Just sort of upbeat fun.
More stuff on here that I knew than I expected. Fun.
Fun and varied
Looking at the discography for Dexy's Midnight Runners, I realize every single album they put out prior to 2012 is in this book. All three albums they put out in the 80's are here. I mentioned this during my review of their second album, but was that necessary? Do I need all of Dexy's music from the 80's in my head? Absolutely not. I don't know. What I am hearing on this album sounds a lot like what I heard on the other three Dexy albums, with slight variations of course. Are the slight variations enough to create this as worthy of inclusion. I would argue not, that one of the albums could be left out (and I would suggest the one I gave two stars as being the one that gets left out). The cover of Jackie Wilson by Van Morrison was fine and I liked how it tried to be somewhat different from the Van Morrison version of the song. Overall, I would place this one close to the Dexy's album I gave 4 stars to. It fell off a bit at the end for me, but perhaps that was because the front half of the album was so good. My favorite tracks: The Celtic Soul Brothers (More, Please, Thank You) Let's Make This Precious Jackie Wilson Plan B Liars A to E Come on Eileen
***a good, fun, and easy listening album
Come on Eileen was amazing, but the rest of the album was not. 2.6
Come on Eileen n geiler Song, aber der Rest war eher "ging so"
come on eileen
Nicht erwartet, dass ich davon ein Lied kenne bis Come on Eileen. War überrascht. Ganz nett, 3 positive Sternchen
Nod bad, 2.5/5 I was thinking most of the way through how much it sounded like that 'Come on Eileen' song which I momentarily thought was The Cure for some reason.
He can sing. But kinda giving too much chest voice - my ears get tired very quickly if the lead vocals don’t give me enough time and space to rest. Music wise, a happy album yeeeh
I listened to this album twice, the second on a road trip hoping it would add to the experience. Ultimately it did improve it, but not by a lot. Jackie Wilson Said and Come on Eileen remained the best songs and the rest of the album flows right along. Was hoping to boost this to a four, but I’ll stick with a three.
Apparently I have never listened to the full version of "Come On Eileen" before this album. Not sure why I never tried to seek out the band that sings it before. Some songs I really liked and others were just ok. I'm at a 3.5, but I'll probably drop it to a 3 because I can't recall any other song at the moment.
The brass section were always a highlight of Dexys and they are at there best in some songs here. Some truly great numbers, trouble is it loses it's way towards meh in the second half only to be rescued by the "even though I have heard it too many times" come on Eileen, that stands out. Some great songs, just not enough.
Blind album, know the artist and the hit. I was never a huge fan of the hit to begin with but I totally understand the style and the way the band sounds. Still couldn't change my perspective of the album though. It's okay.
Songs wie „The Celtic Soul Brothers“, „Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile)“ und vor allem „Come On Eileen“ zeigen diese Mischung aus Soul-Tradition und folkigen Melodien.
Maybe big overseas but this is one of those one hit wonder bands here. I love the song come on Eileen. The record is really well produced. This a fun listen - I think it’s Irish, certainly not British. I need to understand the countries of the UK - is Ireland part of it? What is North Ireland - is that a thing? Wales? Scotland? It’s all so confusing.
I didn't hate this but I didn't like very much about it. The songs are very fluffy. I don't like this guys voice. If we could do half stars this would be 2.5.
Madness
Nice enough to listen to; Kevin Rowlands' vocal style is a bit much after a while, though.
Sean Tanos [11:30 AM] I don't think I had heard any of Dexy's songs other than Come on Eileen. Reminisce - Pt 1 was very engaging, though in August 1980 I was just a few months old, so before memory. The rest of the album was solid pop played with horns.
It’s not a bad album. I feel like this would really be my jam back in the day and probably one of my favourite bands.
More vigor and strong energy in the album! Thoroughly enjoyed it
It's a fun listen, but I don't know if I'll come back for anything except Eileen
I was surprised by this one- I was only familiar with Come on Eileen going in, but this album actually has a range of musical styles and sounds. The use of backing vocals was nice and the "Irishness" felt in come on eileen is not quite as prevalent throughout the rest of the album. Overall- good album
Come on Eileen is the only great song on the album.
I was going to give this a 4 but the ridiculous amount of extra/repeat tracks at the end is an immediate minus point.
Surprised by how much I enjoyed some of the tracks on here. But it's impossible to escape the overplayed sensation of Come On Eileen
Want This One Last Wild Walz, that aint it chief. FAVO: Let's make this precious, Jackie Wilson Said, Until I believe in My Soul, Come on Eileen
Occasional moments of sing-along anthems, otherwise just a pleasant ride
This album managed to inspire indifference despite the lead singer's voice being kind of annoying. (especially his vibrato)
This is the third Dexy’s Midnight Runners album on this list… feels like overkill…
Come on Eileen!!! or sum A lot better than what I was expecting for sure from what I would consider one hit wonders. I like their cover of Jackie Wilson said surprisingly. I’m lowkey crazy tired though so might hurt the score seeing as though it’s like an hour long!
Solid album. Come on Eileen is the obvious standout but the rest of the album was a fun experience, as well.
A whole lot of meh, aside from the one track everyone knows. Outside of that hit, the rest of the album doesn’t leave much of an impression and fades perfectly into the background.
Come On Eileen is a very very good song. Everything else? Not so much. Definitely a one hit wonder. So how do they have 2 more albums on the list?
Sólido tres. No sobresale demasiado pero tampoco está mal
Quirky and fun, but like when a 50-year-old is past the point of midlife crisis, doesn't settle down, and describes himself as having a "youthful spirit". That being said, the old guy can actually still keep up somehow, even if that's 80% thanks to "Come on Eileen".
I used to sit in the basement, eating pop tarts, dipping snuff and ripping dad's cigarettes while binging VHS's top 100 from the <decade>'s list. Come on Eileen was one of my favorite to come on the 80s. Thought the songs were unique, just not my thing.
This took me back... my dad's favorite song was Come on Eileen growing up. Very nostalgic. As far as the full album....The second half was much better than the first.
Another album I would have liked much better if not for the vocals. Three stars.
Overall, this album is better than the other one I had earlier. Still, doesn't do a whole lot for me. I still love Come On Eileen, prolly in large part due to nostalgia. But really it's where they lean most heavily into Irish traditional instrumentation augmented by the horns while doing soul music. That gives it something unique that sets it apart from all the other 80s blue-eyed soul to come out of the British isles. 3 stars.
New wave, Celtic folk, pop, blue-eyed soul.
ohh banger. particularly liked "old" and "come on aileen"
One wonders how these blokes were even one hit wonders.
With the album cover I thought this was gonna be worse, was alright Will I listen to again: 10%
I didn’t think I’d ever listened to a full Dexy’s album but the second this started I was immediately transported back to weekend mornings in my childhood home and this being blasted from downstairs by my mam/ stepdad all windows open cookin/cleaning. A very fun trip down memory lane and certainly something that I like! But I’m not convinced it’s a must listen. Nonetheless it’s one I’ve enjoyed!
Come On Eileen is great. The rest was ok and not as memorable
This is their second album on this list. Fair enough… It feels less like a soul parody than the one that came after, and there’s at least one proper hit here. What stands out most is the mood which is genuinely joyful. The reggae / ska touches, especially through the brass, and even the slightly Celtic-leaning violin bits, work very well. It sounds like a band enjoying itself, and that energy carries the record. I won’t rush to replay it, but I connect with it way more than most synth pop from the same era. A bit of honest good mood on a grey day never hurts. 2.5 / 5. Seriously, rating stuff on only five tiers is rough.
My second from Dexys after Don’t Stand Me Down which I absolutely detested. It’s a decent enough album. Apart from the singles I hadn’t heard anything from it before. Until I Believe In My Soul was looking like it was going to be the standout for me but it went on a bit too long. The only track I flat out disliked was Jackie Wilson Said. Top Track - Old
Just ok
This is like a guilty pleasure album. I want to not like it, but I do. I think it’s a bit to do with nostalgia and my dad liking the band but it is quite good. I really think musically it can be interesting and I enjoy the bluntness of some of the story telling.
Acceptable. Not sure I NEEDED to listen to this before I die.
Not for me, but not bad.
Different style and a good closer. Some forgettable songs but not bad. 3/5
no okej, przeleciało
Good melodies and cool strings and horns on many songs.
(64/100)
I've only ever known Dexys Midnight Runners for "Come on Eileen". But I'm glad to have heard the rest of this album; it's a lot of fun. I particularly liked "Jackie Wilson Said", "All in All", "Plan B", and "I'll Show You"
They are a weird looking band but that doesn’t apply here. So moving on… Ok so, this is really nothing special. It has a sound that separates itself from most of the 80’s blah blah sound. The horns are a nice added touch and Come on Eileen is just so far above big 80’s songs. That’s what keeps this album from being low to low mid. I’ve got nothing else to say. It’s just ok but with such a big known song on this album. It treads water easily. Choice cut: Come on Eileen
This is a fun album w just a few truly memorable moments
It’s between this one and the debut for which Dexys album I liked the best. But three is still two too many. This is one with the big hit everyone knows though. The second half of this flows very well. Has someone told them that 25 or 6 to 4 was already made before they just tried to do it again with Let’s Make This Precious? Favorite songs were The Celtic Soul Brothers, All In All, Plan B, Until I Believe In My Soul, and Come On Eileen.
Upbeat. Just ok
They couldn’t even beat the Be Sharps at the Grammys
They definitely show that they're not a one hit wonder who can't make good music. The music on here is objectively quite good and feels a little experimental for the time. That being said, besides it being high quality, it mostly just bored me
What a closer 😂 Best of the 3 we've had ...
Wanted to like this more but was a bit too fiddley-dee for me even with the classics and once again his vocals are a little annoying after a while. Probably a 7 but marked to a 6 because i anticipated liking it more
Fun
This was ok. I only knew Come On Eileen because I consider this band to be a one hit wonder. I didn’t mind this although it got to be a little long.
Nice it's an interesting mix of Celtic and rock, not particularly for me to repeat.
I like his unique voice. I am also interested in the way it kinda has, like, ska undertones (I'm guessing before ska was really a thing?) I can't think of a mood or situation where I'd opt to listen to this, but I enjoyed it all the same. Also, who doesn't love "Come One Eileen"?
Overlong, but reasonably enjoyable.
Good songs but not really my cup of tea. Very catchy tunes for sure.
This is a fun album with plenty of energy. I like the fiddles and I like the brass. Come On Eileen is an epic-tier bop, and should be judged as such, rather than on the basis that people are now tired of it because it's been way over-played.
This is a band whose name I could never conjure up during bar trivia. The rest of the album is ok -- it seems like these guys are on here multiple times, and this is their one album that should probably be on here given come on eileen. Some brass, some fun beats. A solid 3* Highlights: come on eileen (I legitimately really like this song, it's not just a highlight because I knew it)
The only song I knew was probably the only one most people knew - "Come On Eileen" - which is absolute 80's banger, so I was intrigued to hear what the rest of the album sounded like. I enjoyed this initially, but it went on about half an hour too long. After that it started to feel whiny and sameish. It took 2 listens to get through
There was a girl in school back in the eighties who used to insist Dexys albums were pretty good, and we used to laugh at her because of 'Come on Eileen' and 'Jackie Wilson Said'. 40 years later, I've realised my error. Sorry Cathy, or was it Emma? Anyway, sorry.
Early 80s pop with a touch of 70s funky feel, pretty distinct to their contemporaries
A very strange experience where my faith in the masses is once again affirmed when we all collectively lifted up the best song from this album, “Come On Eileen”. Because there’s some good stuff on here, but so much of it is so similar. I loved the opening “Celtic Soul Brothers” for its dramatic energy, but by song 3 or 4 I kinda got bored of every minute sitting in the same register for singing and instrumentation. “Let’s Make This Precious” also had me going for a while. I love the horns on much of this record, especially on “Jackie Wilson Said”. I just don’t know with this one. Some variation in composition would’ve really sent it above and beyond for me. A nice piano ballad, some softer guitars, some different vocal deliveries. Little things like that would’ve really helped. Let’s go firm 3/5 on this one. High on the enjoyability scale, not so high on the composition/tracklisting.
Like the mix of horns and string instruments. Seems to be many influences and the album is pretty fun. It does get a bit repetitive. 3/5 Might listen again
Und ein Riesenhit Come on Eileen. Das versöhnt dann wieder.
6/10 Not as timeless as eg Funeral by Arcade Fire, but a lot of fun. The big hits are phenomenal but the rest feels a little shallow.
This one is a tough one to review. There have been moments where "Come On Eileen" moved me to tears. I still think it's a brilliant song, just as "Jackie Wilson Said" - two gloriously uplifting, yet deeply melancholic songs that are very dear to me. Then, a couple of years back, I got to interview Kevin Rowland for "The Feminine Divine" (make of that record what you will), and he was just an angry old man, constantly questioning my way of how I phrased my questions, asking me if I had even heard the music, etc. I had the pleasure of talking to a lot of great musicians - Graham Nash, Tears for Fears, Mike Rutherford of Genesis, Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Mike Patton, just to name a few. And *none* of them were so full of themselves as Rowland. I can't listen to "Too-Ray-Ay" without thinking of this talk. That being said, this is not a bad album. What it lacks in variety, it makes up with high quality, quirky production (especially on the re-jiggered version from 2022, or so), and a stunning vocal performance. But yeah, overall this is not a lot more than just "good". Art that's exploiting a sense of nostalgia. Meh ...
cool
Fun and easy listen.
Always loved the kitchen party band sound and Come on Eileen and its timeless bros help the singer woo the girl Romeo and Juliet video, pretty much the template for the Back on 74 video and lots in between (nice surprise to see spotify shows a new video for the song, charting Kevin and the band aging as they play this song over the last 40 years, very cool, but you have to go to Youtube to revisit the classic video). This was the first time I checked the lyrics though - turns out the song goes way deeper, aside from Kevin thinking dirty thoughts for Eileen, which we would have guessed, he's also begging her to give up this dead end Irish Catholic life with all their parents' generation keeping them down with their sentimental nostalgia for Johnny Ray songs of their youth and the toora loora melodies of Irish folk music to breakaway for his ballsy optimism for the big city and opportunities together, like half of Bruce Springsteen's catalogue, and the way that story's fated to end you can see in Kevin's portrait on the album cover or the other half of Springsteeen's catalogue. Anyway, I had a good time diving deep into Come on Eileen this morning, and giving the rest of this album a second look, so the long post for a meagre 3 - I've never loved Kevin's warbling vocals, but there's about four songs here I'll come back for, a nice surprise.
Come on Eileen goes hard
Vessel for Come on Eileen, every other song just seems like a not as polished version of the one hit wonder on the album. Its not bad per say, just not as good as C.O.E. it sounds like the singer just sings the same thing over and over in a slightly different order of notes and just changes the lyrics.
I have some great memories associated with Come on Eileen (singing “come on Irene” when with the foxes; Joel dancing with his mom Eileen at his wedding) that I’m rounding up to 3. Otherwise this would have been a 2.
This was pretty decent, and the cover of one of my Top 5 Van Morrison songs (Jackie Wilson Said…) almost made it a 4, but not quite. Their version is very good, but doesn’t swing like the original. We need bangers!!!
Fun. Slightly odd. Feels a bit Queen-like at points, some obvious trad influences. Just the right side of quirky.
Never need to hear come on Eileen ever ever again… yet it was cool to hear it in context. His vocals really remind me of Robert Smith. Good pop rock
I did not expect much here from the one-hit wonder. I was pleasantly surprised! Expected a bit more folk-y, poppy simplicity. This had a lot of great music with interesting choices on more instruments than I expected. Sometimes jazzy with a touch of soul. Now, it's not the best album ever or anything, but I'm glad I heard it. I'll probably come back for a few of these. “Jackie Wilson Said” “Plan B,” “Liars A to E” were really good. Giving it a 3 because it's decent and better than expected, but its not at all groundbreaking or deep enough to call me deeper.
More than Come on Eileen. Who knew.
Simpa album
3.5. Weird that these guys are only a one hit wonder in the US
čista trojka. okej, al glas mi ne sjeda. zadnja stvar poznata hitčina. sve u svemu solidno al neću slušat, jebiga
This was probably a great band. They sound so lively and fun. Unfortunately the only song that sticks with me is the hit. If I was reviewing singles then Come On Eileen would be 5/5. As an album I don’t find it interesting enough to hold my attention for the whole time.
It's pretty good and am surprised I haven't heard anything beyond the one-hit wonder song.
One banger (obviously) but otherwise I enjoyed but didn’t LOVE
This was ok. Apart from Come on Aileen. Overplayed.
I want to like it more. Parts are really fun, but it just drags on. If I was at a festival or they were playing at a small club I could see enjoying it more. Mostly cause I assume their stage energy would be higher and I would have been drinking.
I heard this album a long time ago and didn’t really remember it so I wasn’t expecting much but it turned out to be a pleasant listen! It’s a unique mix of styles and it seems that music like this could only have been popular in the ‘80s. I’ve always loved the song Come On Eileen ever since I first heard it as a kid and it still stands out as a great song. So interesting that they saved it as the last song on the album but it’s a nice journey getting there and makes for a great capper. Once again another interesting take on music and one which seems like it would never be popular if released nowadays. It’s projects like this that will help get unique albums like this to be heard again by newer generations of music lovers.
fun
Dancing in the kitchen fuck yeah
Enjoyed
Seriously seriously fun. A high 3 and a nice change of pace from recent albums
Definitely liked this better than their other album on the list.
such a fun listen! but not a everyday bob. its definitely giving musical despite being a pop album, as it features symphonic instruments quite heavily.
This grew on me as I listened. Started out a little boring but I appreciated the string/piano work. Plan B and until I believe it in my soul were surprises- especially the jazz break lol. Overall, not my cup of tea but I can appreciate for what it is
I was nervous when I saw the label "Celtic," because I'm really not a fan of modern "Celtic rock." This ended up being an interesting enough blending of genres though. Also anyone who's not moving at least a little to "Come on Eileen" is made of stone.
It was okay.
"huh I only know come on eileen, wonder what else is on here" *proceedes to hear an hour of 'run along eileen,' 'go go eileen,' 'hurry now eileen'* A little too reductive but that sound is very consistent through this entire project. I loved the strings Favorite Songs: Old, Liars A to E, & Come on Eileen,
Come on Eileen was pretty good but the rest was tiring.
It’s pretty good overall with a couple of above average songs. I don’t really care for the vocal style myself.
Yep, c'est un album.
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: The Celtic Soul Brothers (More, Please, Thank You), Come On Eileen Another middling entry on the List. This album is like the intersection of disco, proto-ska and traditional Celtic music slammed into an hour long album. My buddies and I (some of whom were British) used to listen to Come on Eileen, not quite on repeat, but in a very tight rotation, to the point where I'd get nauseous hearing it. Granted, its been a long time since then and so that feeling has mostly gone away... mostly.
Pretty good album but "Come On Eileen" ticks this specific box well enough for me.
There was a period in the eighties when having a violin section in a song was considered a necessary element Time has not been kind to fiddle players, and hearing this album again makes me a little nostalgic for those times When is comes to Dexy's, I'm really just interested in the Greatest Hits, and didnt find any surprises buried in this collection
Nada guau, el del medio Nota: 2.9
Come on Eileen and The Celtic Soul Brothers are the stand out tracks, along with a decent cover of Jackie Wilson Said but the rest of it is fairly average.
Ok, I actually knew 2 songs off this album: Jackie Wilson Said and of course Come On Eileen. I like both of those songs. The rest was ok.
Fun album full of bombastic Celtic influenced rock. Favorite track: Come On Eileen
Eh
A bit too long but there are some nice tunes on here. Come On Eileen really does slap.
5.07
Partly great, partly not so
Come on Eileen er en klassiker!
Eileen is a super fav
This album sounds like early ska, as Ryan put it—and I think that’s an apt description. I’ve never listened to Dexys Midnight Runners much beyond “Come On Eileen,” but surprisingly, Too-Rye-Ay is a really fun album. It’s full of energy, brass, and a kind of scrappy charm that feels both soulful and a little chaotic in the best way. You can see how they stood out in the early ’80s scene with that mix of punk attitude, blue-eyed soul, and folk influences all mashed together.
Cover 5 First, the version to listen to is the "(As it should have sounded)" that came out in 2022. Regardless, I was never fully enamored with this band. I liked his voice, because it was original sounding. I don't know, as a kid, I thought it was kinda funny but I it.
Some fun to be had.
Kind of interesting. Not great.
All the soungs sound pretty much the same. As everyone else mentions, Come On Eileen is the best song here. 3/5
Fun Irish album. Nothing really special past the song everyone knows.
Loved the horns and the backing vocals and sounds like a very fun live band. A couple songs I’ll come back to (Liars A to E) but generally didn’t grab me. Don’t love the crooning weirdo vocals.
This certainly was unique. Folk skaa is the closest thing I could come up with (theres some other genres tested, but thats what stood out) 😂 Mostly decent tracks. Only familiar with Come On Eileen before this and the album definitely stretches those themes I liked Jackie Wilson Said, Lets Make This Precious and of course Come On Eileen. Not likely ill come back, but this was a solid 2.5/3 star spin
Come On Eileen carried the album
Eh- too “movie soundtrack” for me. All of the songs are pretty fun, though/of course. THREE!
I did not expect to see this mainstay of VH1 one hit wonder lists show up here but interesting to hear an entire album. I think at least one other of these songs could have been hits. A great sound but a little goes a long way. I was relieved to finally look at the Wiki page for this album and see I only needed to get through the first 10 songs. I did have some good times in college dancing to Come On Eileen if anyone wants to hear more about that.
Another one on here for one song. Pretty sure we’ve had Dexys before and they did not need another entry. Not bad.
So we have 3 albums from these guys and one album from Jay Z, Beyonce, Green Day, none from Drake, John Mayer Tame Impala, or the Black Keys? Sick.
Come on Eileen is pretty fun
Decent album, banger in Come On Eileen.
Even in the ‘80s in the UK if you asked someone in the street to tell you anything about Dexys Midnight Runners you would get something about Come On Eileen, dungarees, a fat dart player, or a song about Geno Washington. Dexys were not a wildly popular band, they had a wildly popular single. They aren’t bad, but they really didn’t cause much of a ripple in the UK beyond tales of Eileen’s spunky adventures, and I really don’t think they need at least two albums in this list. As for the music, it’s ok, nothing bad, nothing exceptional. I suspect it was a smart choice to put Come On Eileen as the last track otherwise 90% of album listens would get no further than it.
Not bad, but a lot of these songs should work better than they do. Overall was just boring. “Come On Eileen” is a classic, just a shame that nothing sounds even close to how good that is.
Come on Eileen is the top five 80s song!! at the room enjoyed the second half more than the first half
This is not New Wave. It's Folk Wave.
Too Rye Ay is an album that i just have the strangest feelings on. On one hand i think that the album does get incredibly repetitive with all the songs having that Irish folk style which while it does sound nice and unique at points, it can get quite repetitive when dragged out and the album does have it's really bad moments (I'm looking at you, Until I Believe In My Soul) but on the other hand, It has some really solid singles with stuff like The Celtic Soul Brothers and Come On Eileen and I think Kevin Rowland's vocals are a huge step up from their last album (except for that one song i mentioned prior). Its equal parts a 2 and 4 star album so all together, it gets a 3. Best Song: Come On Eileen Worst Song: Until I Believe In My Soul
Alright pop. The standout is the song everyone already knows. Don't remember anything else. Less weird than last album of theirs that was recommended.
Definitely a band with a divergent sound for the 80s. Fun, rolling, definitely a party. The problem is the party goes on too long, with songs and the album. A good party knows its limits and stops when it’s time to stop. This party reeks of stale beer and stale feelings…
Adam said 4 out of 5, I’d say 3
Pretty good stuff. Good driving album
3.5
3.5. Enjoyable
Enjoyable album. Celtic folk-rock. The horns and strings throughout add a lot to the compositions. Come on Eileen and the cover of Van Morrison's Jackie Wilson were the only two songs I was familiar with, but not a clunker on the entire album.
Got pretty lucky with the one hit, huh
3/5
expected more
Somebody get that poor girl a towel! For as fun as some of the tracks are on this record, and yes, there are multiple, it's pretty far from essential listening before you die. Still, when you have a world-renowned dance hall classic on your album, you're doing something right.
The fiddle-lined folksiness and exaggeratedly expressive vocal styling that made 'Come On Eileen" such a lasting hit wears thin stretched across a full album.
-definitely a step up from the other Dexys Midnight Runners album i heard which was a bit of a nothingburger. not my absolute favorite thing but it was fun, love the genre blending -this was my first time hearing Come On Eileen in full. shit is fire. a worthy number to become a one hit wonder for -Favorites are Let’s Make This Precious and Come On Eileen
One stand out track 😂
Play "Come on Eileen" 18 times!
Come on Eileen is obviously a classic. The rest was ok, some much better than others I thought. Jackie Wilson said was my favourite but it's a Van Morrison track so doesn't really count. 2.5 but I'm feeling generous
Another album I bought recently. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes. 11/1001, 11/44 (25%) Will I get? Already have
Ah, one of the Kevin Rowland re-inventions - the second popular version of Dexy's Midnight Runners after their Young Soul Rebels phase. Still, it's better than the more recent re-inventions! This was the first time I'd played this album, though I was familiar with Come on, Eileen, though it suffers from the huge airplay it received at the time. I was a bit surprised how the rest of the album seems steeped in soul. Not a bad effort, but not sure how 'great' it is.
3+
fun
Is it weird if I think Come on Eileen is a bit overrated? Overall a joyful set of Celtic soul, even if I don’t really understand what the lyrics are about.
The are a whole lot of very mediocre British albums on this list. There's a reason these guys were a one hit wonder. It's not a bad album, but certainly not one of the 1000 most important ever in all of music.
enjoyed it much more than dont stand me down, no nonsense talking over the tracks, most were fun listens and catch, and good ol eileen brought it home
Nice
I don’t understand how there are 3 albums by this band on the list. Fine, unobjectionable, but nothing great.
A couple of catchy tunes with a couple weird songs and musical choices mixed in. Overall, pretty good.
about as goofy as you'd expect given Come On Eileen but it's not a bad time !
Fun!
Very solid but I only saved a couple songs. Liked the instrumentation and vocals.
Rating: 6/10 Really enjoyed the Celtic influences, even though it all starts to sound the same after a while.
Like Human League a couple days ago, Dexys Midnight Runners is responsible for one of the greatest singles of the 80s - “Come On Eileen,” and while I was interested in listening to the whole album that that song came from, I was also extremely aware I’ve ALREADY had a DMR album this project and it was one of the worst things I’ve listened to so far! So, let’s say my expectations were…tempered. Thankfully, this album is totally okay! While “Eileen” is still the clear standout, the rest of it is fine! Fun songs, the singer’s voice is really weird and good (he reminded me of Justin Hawkins from The Darkness at many points), and while, it’s never going to be my favorite album, it is way better than their previous representation on this list, and better than the Human League album I got earlier this week.
Fun instrumentals, irritating vocals. Can’t believe these guys have three albums on here 🙄
I liked this more than I thought I would. I don't like Come on Eileen, Rowland's strangled singing or Celtic fiddle, but the horns and other string arrangements make for some enjoyable tracks.
Not sure I "needed to hear this album", but it was cool
NO certified banger s albuma je "All in All" to je genuinely prekrasna pjesma. Cijelom albumu bi dala 3.5/5 but that is not possible so I give it a three.
Pretty good.
