Really liked the sound, didn’t expect to enjoy this at all
Ok I’ve heard something from all the Big Four now, and I reckon Megadeth are a comfortable second for me (behind Metallica, obvs). There’s just more to hold onto in terms of hooks and melody than, say, Slayer. Some great guitar parts on here. It’s more in the Iron Maiden mould: a bit cheesy at times but good, clean, speed metal fun. 3.5
Pretty much the template for thrash metal. The best guitar playing they’ve ever had, with some blistering solo parts by Marty Friedman. I’ve never been big on Dave Mustaine’s singing, but he is at his best here. The guitar parts are intricate and inventive, and at no point does it feel thrown together, all the sections are well thought out, and nothing feels out of place in any of the songs. This was the best Megadeth had ever been.

The album was an a-okay listen. Then I remembered that Dave Mustaine got in a fight with Men's Wearhouse to the point of a lawsuit and I couldn't stop laughing.
Great guitar tone and really tight drumming. The lyrics are interesting, and I’d probably need another listen to have a full picture. However they’re definitely clever, the phallic imagery on the “rust in piece… Polaris” is a well-executed satire of Cold War one-upmanship . I really enjoy the enjoy the guitar playing. (Knowing nothing of the genre) it has all the elements that I like from both math rock and classic rock. Honestly, I think this is as good as it gets for metal and me

So now we have the answer to the question of just how many high-decibel sounds an axe can make. Speaking personally, one did not actually need such an answer. But if all you have are hammers (or guitars), everything looks like a nail (or an overwrought and masturbatory solo). On the plus (or at least the least minus) side, this seems slightly more tuneful and slightly cleaner/tighter than most of the other metal, which is almost uniformly wretched, on this esteemed list. That makes it a 0.8 day,as opposed to a 0.3, say. And, seriously, editors, this is “mature” songwriting: “Winds blow from the bowels of hell/Will we get warning? Only time will tell.” And this “sardonic commentary:” “The end is near, it's crystal clear/Part of the master plan/Don't look now to Israel/It might be your homelands.” It’s all just meant to scare the women and children, right? What else could possibly be the point?
Thrash indeed
A classic face melting album that would get you and your bros pumped at the gym or in the garage while you got your drink on. “Dawn Patrol” sounded kind of dorky though, for lack of better words. For the right mood though, this album is legit. Maybe not ideal for studying or putting the baby to bed, but maybe you need a little melting to get you through your day.
I really enjoyed listening to this one - great rythm changes, amazing drumming following the bass riffs and then the layers of guitars - songs are just filled with great riffs. Also, a lot of great small gems, such as the acoustic guitar passage in Holy Wars. The vocals were not the best but sometimes reminded me of Mike Patton on Easy so that wasn't such a bad thing after all. Didn't really care much for the lyrics but the music was amazing. 4.5/5 down to 4.

This band has never really connected with me, but there are a few thrash bangers and a lot of prescient lyrics on here that make it enjoyable.
A masterpiece of thrash, hard and heavy with clear intent and message. Megadeth at its possibly best, musically if not commercially. Rips louder than your mum's ass after Thanksgiving dinner. 5/5 bangers all the way. Dawn Patril is the weakest track and it still sets a mood unlike many other bands on this list so far.
I was surprised that I enjoyed the first half of this. It then got a bit Mega and a bit deathy...
So many people at school wore these shirts. I can appreciate the mastery of the guitar neck but this isn't something I really enjoy
Screaming, thrashing guitars, driving percussion and growling vocals, I get it, I appreciate why people dig it, I just don't like it.

Great outdo solo Poison was the care- Guitar great as always, but vocals are fast and too drowned out for me, especially considering personal topic Lucretia- this is a bop tbh. What a nice ghost😊👍 Tornado of Souls - another great 1-2 of vocals then solo👍 Dawn patrol - how does this sound like a mole Rust in peace... Polaris- weird framing device singing from perspective of missile. Kinda weird also cold war is over thought you'd like to know This isn't really my thing, but is a great put together album. 3/5
Don't get it - feels like a token entry - but a lot of them do
A couple songs were definitely bangers. Metal is not much my thing anymore, but this sounded good. About halfway through I had hear about as much as I was going to. When the music when silent, only them did I know it was over.
Ridiculous, mind-bending riffs that border on orchestral at certain points. An incredible thrash record. Favorite tracks: "Tornado of Souls", "Five Magicks"
This is a group who has clearly perfected their sound. The guitar on this whole album is unreal and the drum beats are fun. I'm not much of a metalhead, but this album has definitely sucked me in, Hangar 18 in particular.

There is nothing truly skippable on the entire tracklist, and there are plenty of serious bangers.
Intro that doesn't got three test of the song. Check. Crunchy riff. Check. Shredding solo that shows technical versatility but detracts from the song. Check. Repeat ad nauseum. Two stars for the riffs but this is very boring.

A fun 40 minutes of catchy and accessible thrash metal with interesting themes and lyrics. Not too dense, a good handful of bangers, and doesn't outstay it's welcome. My only real criticism is that the depiction of John Major on the cover looks more like the Demon Headmaster. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Hangar 18 Date listened: 12/09/22

I made the mistake of trying to listen to this on earbuds this morning. It sounded weak and artificial. It lacked heaviness, despite itself. This evening I played again with my bigger headphones. Proper cans. Automatically transformed it into its true, ridiculous, heavy self. Lesson learned. Metal is for the evening and big headphones.
Nothing to say here; an essential metal album.
The instrumentation is exceptional, but the vocals really don’t fit. Also, Dave Mustaine is a disappointing human being.

Metal is not my genre and this album does nothing to change that. It sounds very cliche to me and is largely in distinguishable from most of the other metal albums from that are. I respect their place in music history and acknowledge that there are intricacies that I might not get, but I don't find it particularly enjoyable.
Probably the best Megadeth album. I'd still put on Slayer or Metallica and probably Anthrax over it but it hits hard.
Cool songs, high school notebook lyrics (a good thing), but damn I sure got shred fatigue.

Feels quite dated to me - religion and holy war plus nuclear armageddon is so eighties... I can appreciate that it's technically really good, and well put together, but it doesn't grip me at all. Lyrics are a bit too cheesy, and it doesn't quite work for me. Not unpleasant to listen to, but not one I'll ever go back to. 2/5.

Quite the instrument heavy album. Didn’t really enjoy this one too much as it was just high speed guitar and drums one song after another. Similar to Iron Maiden but they at least have decent singing and some songs are catchy. Megadeth seems more like a purist band for those that just like thrash metal. 4.3/10
Classic metal. Enjoyed the electric guitar. Buzzing it wasn't screamo. Holy wars and Tornado of souls both made it into a personal playlist. Not an album I will be running back to.
Heavy metal is one of my favorite genres, and this is a classic thrash metal album. However, analyzing it in this list's context, I think it is a classical within the metal community and not a classical album for music history. It deserves some space when considering 1001 albums? maybe, but I'm not sure, even though it is an excellent Megadeath release. The songs are lovely, and the album sounds good, despite some repetitiveness.
This was a surprisingly good album. I've listened to and not disliked Megadeth whenever one of my friends played it, but this is the first album that really stands out. An absolute masterpiece of the thrash era. Musically, especially the first couple of songs, are the absolute top. And whatever you think of Mustaines voice, it surely adds a uniquely Megadeth sound.

Not my taste. Conscience of the early connection with Metallica. Easier to hear lyrics, but more irritating voice than Hetfield. Less “noise” so guitar soloing is a little clearer, but not that enjoyable.

Great album, very fast, very heavy, very 80s sounding. If Dave had stayed in Metallica, they could have made the same album over and over again as well!

Some great early thrash metal, I think it still holds up today.
I liked this best I think of the metal selections on the list so far. A lot of variety in the sound, not just chunka-chunka drone or endless shreddy solos. Though somewhat given to the typical metal sin of pompous self-importance, there seemed to be some humor in the lyrics too. The singing didn’t favor clear articulation though, and I couldn’t catch most of the words. At times the singing got overly caricature and affected too, really my only gripe with this (and a minor one, mostly the singing fit the music well, but it was definitely the weaker point).
It's the first good album since Dave stopped sulking about not being in Metallica
One of the most impressive thrash metal bands out there. The most progressive of the big 4, they combine a hair metal 80s style (especially in the vocals) with experimental effects, constantly evolving their songs by the minute. The intro track "Holy Wars" is the perfect example, where you get comfortable in one phase of the song before an abrupt riff comes out of nowhere and pulls your attention elsewhere. All of them do this to some extent. The lyrics are awesome, painting gruesome scenes full of danger and spite. Everyone is super talented, and the production is incredibly impressive. There sounds to be hardcore influence in songs like "Tornado of Souls." I'm a fan of most of the songs, even though it can be hard to identify between them at times (but that goes for metal in general). Good mix of hardcore speed metal and the creepier groove tracks.

Classic head banging heavy metal. Fantastic guitar riffs and double pedal drum thrashing. I don’t find this type of music easy to listen to and wouldn’t choose it but totally appreciate the skills.
What a classic. I had this CD when I was 13 or so. It kind of makes me sad that grunge and "alternative" music played such a big role in this genre of music becoming less popular. I was totally one of those kids who absolutely loved metal but within a couple years wasn't really listening to it anymore.

Surprised to have really enjoyed it. First real listen to a heavy metal album, will certainly listen to it again.
It's energetic isn't it. So this is what my mates were listening to at school. I was happy with Faith No More. Does sound pretty much exactly like I imagined it to. Apparently massively influential, so again the curse of I've heard loads influenced by it but not the thing itself. All good metal, not massively my thing, I think I prefer my metal slightly less noodly in, always space for some of this for me but more likely in small doses. Mind you the solos and rhythm guitar for the second half of Lucretia are excellent.
It's possible that if this came out in 1971, when I stopped listening to Tom Jones and Sandler and Young and started listening to Black Sabbath, I would have been all over it. It’s easy to dismiss them now, since I've had no interest in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th waves of metal. But, the guitar playing is suitably over the top (and definitely catches your attention), they have good energy, nice changes of pace and the lyrics aren’t garbage. I guess every generation will spawn new metal-heads and kids born in the late 70s needed metal they could call their own.

Not bad, not great. I like a lot of the riffs, but there's also quite a few which just kind of sound like "insert generic thrash riff". That's kind of what you get with the big four, to be fair. Also not a fan of Mustaine's voice.
I thought this was going to be passable, but didn't have high hopes. I thought I knew what Megadeth sounded like and I didn't think I liked it. Turns out I was wrong and this is a great album! I listened to it all the way through like 4 times in a row. I don't really care for Mustaine's vocals, but they're easy enough to get over. The rest is excellent. 5/5
Believe it or not, but I've never actually listened to this classic apart from Hangar 18 (which is still my favourite Megadeth track out of the ones I've heard). This thing is filled to burst with riffs and the production sounds fantastic. I'm just not a big fan of Mustaine's vocals but instrumentally this is near flawless for me.
RIP will always hold a special place in my heart, as well as metal history. The latter because IMO this was so good that this is why thrash had to fade out, there was no topping Dave’s new crew’s chemistry and his ability to balance harmony and anger. The former because this is one of the first metal CDs I got and fell in love with. And even if I ever have to sell off my collection, there is no way that I would part with my 1990 first edition- the remaster that reverbs Dave’s vocals is just not it. But this sounds as technically perfect as ever, even the (likely deliberate) imperfect moments. And I’ll always go to bat for “Dawn Patrol”, which is a neat little interlude before the deadly finish. I don’t think that I can give this a full A due to Dave’s politics and Junior’s recent problems. I’m still willing to compromise for 5 stars and accept that Dave has always had his foot in his mouth (we wouldn’t have “Holy Wars” if he didn’t say some particularly insensitive shit, for instance), and Junior’s creepy behavior is a seemingly more recent development. All I know is that I feel like putting it back on.

I think it's safe to say that I just don't like metal. I can enjoy small bits, but I mostly can't get myself to enjoy it. I also don't like the style of singing that metal sometimes uses. I feel like I'm being held at gunpoint. Highlights: Holy Wars... The Punishment Due, Five Magics

I absolutely love this album. One of the all time great metal albums.
I used to be a bigger Megadeth fan than I am now, so this album isn't as appealing to me as it once would have been. Also, there are only a few instances where I feel Dave Mustaine's voice actually suits metal, so I did not enjoy that aspect of this album. Some of the riffs were pretty good I do have to say. Otherwise it's simply not for me.

Rust in Peace by Megadeth (1990) What excels on this album are the guitar performances by Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, both of whom display a virtuosity that is beyond classic. And the compositions go well beyond simple chord progressions and driving beats. They are intricate, with fulsome use of tempo changes, metric variety, wild percussive riffs, and vivid tonal colors. It’s interesting how much of the solo lead guitar work is performed by Friedman, but it seems that the final lead phrases on each track are pretty generally taken by Mustaine, as if to underscore who’s the boss. Lead vocals by Mustaine are, however, are less than dazzling. His effort to sound evil is undermined by a rather squeaky timbre (although the frog croak non-melody on “Dawn Patrol” is interesting). I mostly wanted to tune out the ‘singing’ just to listen to the extraordinary guitar work. Backing vocals by bassist David Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza don’t offer much assistance. And lyrics are well below par, focusing on themes of denunciation, vengeance, judgment, apocalyptic warnings, darkside cosmologies, unstable psyches, and angry antipathy toward the instrumentalities of the Cold War (which, in 1991, was about to come to a stunning end with the collapse of the Soviet Union—Megadeth weren’t the only ones blindsided by this one). There ain’t a lot of love here. And whatever love is expressed (“Poison Was the Cure”) is quickly regretted. Nice music for channeling one’s anger, but when you’re done you’ll want to sit under a tree and listen to the wind. 3/5
I’m not as fond of thrash metal as I am of hard rock or pst-thrash Metallica style metal, but Megadeath is solid. I like this and remember well when it came out commercially.
I expected a band called Mega Death to be a hell of a lot darker than this. its such a good name for a band, but it feels a bit of a lie. Mega-stonewashed would probably fit better. maybe mega-real-ale. i mean there's not much dethy about this.
The result of of a threesome involving Scrappy Doo, Richard Madeley and a self employed wellness guru named Breeze. A real hate fuck between the three of them.

I have always tended to avoid Megadeth because I really can't be bothered with Mustaine's voice, his guitar wankery or his bleating about Metallica being mean to him. As a general rule I prefer my thrash more punk and less ginger but I surprisingly really enjoyed the shiny big hooks and proto-prog metal bits going on here.
I still prefer Metallica. Something about Mustaine's vocals just seems a bit off to me, but there is no denying that this is a fun record and that the guitar could disintegrate a young child off the mortal plane. The album art is really funny to me for some reason. Gently stroke the alien tube.

I'll just get this out of the way: I prefer Metallica. Is Mustaine trying to ripoff Axel Rose's vocal style, or is that just the unfortunate way he sings? If you just wanna rock and don't care how this album will do it for you. There's plenty of slamming metal guitar work to go around. But overall it gets repetitive and bland by the back half of the album. Mega-meh.

I cannot handle how awesome this is. The song titles are SICK but also funny and not too self-serious. That's what I'd say about the whole album, honestly. These guys are having fun and we're just along for the ride. Some of the most insane guitar solos I've ever heard to boot. Crazy that tour de force albums like this are on the same list of albums as like 15 Elvis Costello snoozers

Better than I expected
Okay. Worst part is easily the vocals but I seldom like metal vocals.
Amazing thrash metal classic. Marty Friedman's brilliant guitar work brings this album to a new level. Peace Sells is still there best album but these is close second.
Fun and fast paced. Seems like it always develops in a way I would not have expected, and the fretboards must have been smoking when they recorded this. Not overly impressed by the lyrics, but I suppose that isn't the point in this genre.
Megadeth should slap but Dave's voice is just not good. It's not terrible enough to ruin the listen but I think it's a big reason why I don't revisit Megadeath a lot.

I've always thought of Megadeath as less than. Not sure why. I've never owned any, this will be the first I listen to all the way through. I appreciate the over the top silly cover, that bodes well. Holy Wars is a super strong start. Yeah, the whole album is strong. The riffs are there, it's fast and hard, the lyrics are silly. Gets the blood pumping. But still, put it all together and it doesn't quite hit the mark for me. I don't feel emotion, or sense of humor, or much besides adrenalin. I guess that's why there's more than one band in the world.

Mustaine’s vocals aren’t… that great. The guitar is pretty technically amazing but a bit “paint by numbers” - not much original happening there. Not the best Megadeth record, but it’s fine.
Pure and simple: this album rocks. I had heard a couple of Megadeth songs before, but I had never gone out of way to give one of their albums a full listen. After giving this one a go, I would say it would be much harder to find a thrash metal album that is more impressive instrumentally than 'Rust in Peace'. The guitars and drums are SO powerful, and the production allows every single note and beat to stand out on its own. There are a ton of solos here, and they are all excellent/fit in perfectly within each track. The one thing I did know about Megadeth going into this record is their leader Dave Mustaine's involvement in Metallica during their early years. I tried to keep Metallica comparisons at a minimum and evaluate this on its own, but one thing that was apparent to me is that a lot of these songs were shorter and relied on defined riffs which are very characteristic of songs off of 'Kill Em All'. The one song that tried something different than this was the opener 'Holy Wars', and that is the best song on the album IMO. I'd be curious to know if Megadeth relied on shorter songs moving forward or if they expanded to longer/multi-part songs on future releases. While I was a fan of the music and short track lengths, I will say that I don't think Mustaine is a great vocalist. His voice never completely ruined any of the songs for me (I thought it was incorporated about as good as it could have been in the mix), but I do feel like I would have been able to take in the lyrics better and just feel an overall stronger presence if the vocals were a bit better. Overall, a great metal album with one setback that keeps it from being a great album in general. 3.5/5.
Solid metal album - appreciated the variation in instrumental arrangements so it wasn’t just 40 straight minutes of chugging. Some questionable vocals near the end, but overall an enjoyable listen (which is apparently more than I can usually say for LPs in this genre)
I respect the musicianship here and face-melting guitars But, this death metal stuff is just not my thing. However, this is like 100000000 times better than those Sepultura albums that kept coming up. This is more Metallica than Sepultura. They appear to have an alien conspiracy fixation, which is weird. Anyway, this is not my genre.

I've listened to a lot of metal throughout the years, but to this day, 'Hanger 18' remains one of my all-time favourite metal songs, and my favourite Megadeth track. It's no secret that the shortcoming of Megadeth's music has always been Dave Mustaine's voice, but on 'Hanger', he manages to mostly avoid his signature squeaky, nasally sound and deliver a decent vocal performance that really works with the rest of the song. Then again, this being Megadeth, we're here for the guitar virtuosity of Mustaine and, on 'Rust In Peace', Marty Friedman. And holy shit, is that on full display in 'Hanger 18'. The solo trade-offs in the final portion of the song, interspersed with that fantastically heavy riff, is just genius. Putting aside my love of that particular track, there's lots to enjoy on this album. 'Holy Wars' is another Megadeth staple, and for good reason - the face-melting nature of its opening, its well-known flamenco-style interlude, the sheer head-banging goodness of the remainder - yeah, that's a hell of a track. Fortunately, while many of these other tracks are forgettable vocally and lyrically, god damn does the music really shine. 'Take No Prisoners' and 'Five Magics' are great examples, particularly the insane guitar solo work at the end of 'Magics'. And then, after what's a gradual, slow-paced beginning to 'Poison Was the Cure', it just erupts in this incredibly energetic, thrash-y riff that carries the song into its brief yet brilliant ending solo. The remaining songs on the album are all worthwhile, particularly 'Tornado of Souls'. 'Dawn Patrol' is a surprising addition, bringing a much slower-paced, brooding element to the album. All in all, a seminal album of the thrash metal era, and arguably Megadeth's best. 4.5/5.
Not for me
Probably the greatest metal album of all time. Not MY favorite personally, but objectively the greatest. This album makes Metallica's best work look like child's play.

I'm not a huge fan of thrash metal. But this is a damn good album for what it is. Great production values, their playing is TIGHT. They would be great to see live.

An absolute class in Thrash Metal. There's honestly nothing new I can add to this album's discussion, but I'll try anyways. The overall sound is great, but Dave's singing might not be for everyone, I'm honestly inbetween liking Mustaine's vocals or not, since I don't dislike them but feel like Metallica's James Hetfield can give his songs the vocals they deserve, especially in the detour from thrash they were doing around this time (Load and Reload) and definitely in the actual thrash albums like Master Of Puppets, Ride The Lightning and my favourite: 2008's Death Magnetic. I honestly haven't been able to listen to any Anthrax or Slayer yet, so I can't compare the stuff that they were releasing at the time to this, but overall even if the output from those bands just happened to be better at the time, this is still definitely worth a listen if you enjoy Thrash. Dawn Patrol sucks ass though, jeez Dave stick to high lyrics

It is very clear that Dave Mustaine did time in Metallica before moving on to his own joint. He's clearly not a great vocalist, but does he need to be? Megadeth serve catchy, camp and snarling song after song, never relenting.
A classic of thrash. Dave's vocals are a acquired taste I suppose you could say, but the music itself is great. After this it was diminishing returns but those first few Megadeth albums are beloved to many a metalhead.

The riffs are pretty glorious here, as is the cover art. I mean, what the hell is that cover even saying? I love whatever that story is. But the lyrics in the songs are pretty rough and I wish I couldn't tell what he was saying. Like if Mustaine was just constantly screaming non-sensically, I might enjoy that more. But this is pretty fun anyway.
Fuck yes, five stars is the least I could give this masterpiece. This absolutely rips. Don't make 'em like this any more, do they?

The fourth album from Megadeth is just as "thrashy" as one would expect. The thrash metal songs whips you around from one to the next, but never getting boring. If you like fast, nasty jams on guitars and drums - including many guitar solos - than this is the album for you. The album was popular at release due to Megadeth's many tours with other prominent rock and metal bands, so it was no wonder that only 4 years later the album was certified platinum. This album defined a genre of metal music at the beginning of the 90's, and is still widely regarded as one of the best albums out there for thrash metal. Helluva-rocking good time!

Dazu diese niemals verjährte Haltung zu Politik und Religion, die verlässlich Anlass zur Kritik geben. Kein Wunder, dass Metall sich von 68er Weltverbesserern abspaltete, als Hippies zum Mainstream mutierten. 3.4

Cool riffs and guitar, can’t deny Mustaine his credit. But the songs are overall missing some life to them, and the stale production always seems to be always missing something to take the album further. The vocals are also hard to listen to. They sound amateur.

Never thought I’d like more thrash metal than Metallica, but this is great. The vocals get a little annoying but so much fun to listen to and even more fun to notice their technical skill.

It's not Megadeth's fault I'm more of a Doom / Sludge / Slow Metal guy. But, beyond technical proficiency, I just don't get the appeal of speed metal.
God damn, I said god damn, these guys were tight. Not a big fan of their music, but they could play. Countdown was def the better album, but this one certainly holds it's place in the developing the genera.

I have heard a few Megadeth songs, but not many. Fun fact: Marty Friedman (guitarist) went to high school here in Laurel, MD. Mustaine’s vocals… take a bit to get used to. But the musicianship is clearly there. You can clearly see the line of evolution from Metallica to Megadeth.
Whoa, what a lead in on Holy Wars. If you don't like guitars, you do now. Incredible work and at such a pace! Sorry, hard to type with a melted face. The album doesn't always keep up with the opener but it's still pretty impressive. The first 4 tracks are awesome from a music standpoint (Mustaine's voice is annoying). The next 3 are still good but each is up and down (awesome sequences surrounded by so-so ones). Tornado of Souls is a good example; it really cranks up around the 3min mark then settles back down to decent around the 4min mark. Of the final 3, I didn't care much for Dawn Patrol (My Creation was ok but brief) but the title track is almost as good as the first half of the album.
I've actually never listened to Megadeth before this album. I wasn't that much into metal in my teens although I liked some. This album was intense. I loved the riffs in most of the songs, especially Holy Wars, Hanger 18 and Tornado of Souls. Can definitely hear their influence in some of the modern metal that I know.
In general I enjoyed this album. I'm not a huge fan of thrash, but I can appreciate it, particularly the great tone and precision. I have to ding this album for two reasons. The first is probably not fair, but there were times I felt like I was listening to Tenacious D, particularly songs like Holy Wars...the Punishment Due, Take No Prisoners, and Lucretia. These songs made me think of songs like Car Chase City and the Metal. It's not fair to ding an album because of songs that parody the style, but I had a hard time taking it seriously as a result. The other ding is deserved: there's a lot of lyrical cheesiness: "Welcome to our fortress tall" in Hangar 18 (but, to be fair, the song rocks). "A snake you were when we met" in Poison was the Cure. "Thermal count is rising/in perpetual writhing/the primordial ooze/and the sanity they lose" in Dawn Patrol (but I like the bass line in the song). "Immense in my girth, erect I stand tall" (Rust in Peace...Polaris). Ugh.

Instrumentally very good, but dragged down by bad vocals.
I enjoyed this one. A lot. Surprise! When the first track, "Holy Wars...the Punishment Due" started, I thought, "I'm noticing the guitars and I like what they're doing. I'm noticing the drums and I like what they're doing. It's not boring and it's not noise. I'm moving with the music." Dave Mustaine, as I would notice through the whole album, did interesting, varied, and effective things with his voice. You get that change in tempo and the scary deep voice comes out, and it was so cool. "Take No Prisoners" employed a heavy metal backup call-and-response chorus, and I realized that there needs to be more of that. This one made me want to move my body. "Five Magics" went from the anti-war themes into a bit of geekery. Extra points for bringing "wyverns" into it. Extra points for the Exorcist voice effects and the demon backup singer "Possessed with hellish torment!" I love the cackle at the beginning of "Lucretia." And this song gets a little jazzy and swingy in a way I much appreciate. "Lucretia rocks away...yay!" "Dawn Patrol" is a 30-year-old warning about climate change done in a creaky, creepy voice. "We end our lives as moles." "Rust in Peace...Polaris" was inspired by an anti-nuke bumper sticker. Wow! Last comment is that while I usually have a hard time with guitar solos, I really liked these, and I couldn't tell you why, but I did.
Although I can appreciate the skill required for these musicians to perform this music, it is not an album that I want to sit back and listen to. The variation in tempos and melodies was nice, but I am not in love with the album…I don’t think that we can even be friends.
Are they trying to be silly? This isn't funny enough for me to believe they're not earnest but ... The songs I _almost_ liked were Breakpoint and, I can't believe I'm about to type these words, Tornado of Souls. But I've had enough metal for a while. Could we please have some Indigo Girls or Barbra Streisand or, as a friend of mine once said, "some goddamned Dolly Parton?"
When this came up I was not thrilled about more metal. Oh well, here goes... "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due" started and I was liking what I was hearing in the opening guitar. The lyrics were melodious expressing sentiments I could agree with. Is this me liking a Megadeth song? On to "Hangar 18" and I'm really digging it. Somehow I've plugged into this and... can repeated exposure to metal bands in this project turn me into a metal-head? "Take No Prisoners" takes off like a rocket. The guitar streaks through the opening and locks in on the melody as the drum starts kicking its ass. Fantastic stuff! The lyrics come in and… wow! If thrash metal has hooks Megadeth knows how to write them. Blown away by this song. "Five Magics" takes things down a notch and makes me want to get back into Dungeons & Dragons. Typical of their songs there are several killer guitar solos, not what I typically think of as my thing but man these are good... Is it me or is this album a lot of fun? "Poison Was The Cure" opens ominously and then explodes into Megadeth's high-speed thrills. Even if you hate this stuff you're delusional if you can't recognize the talent behind it... I love the witch cackle kicking off “Lucretia” and its lyrics. Yes, this is me loving some Megadeth. “Tornado of Souls” rocks! Incredible song. The music is intricate. Incredible performance. Then the guitar solo… holy crap! Wow wow wow! “Dawn Patrol” switches to a more ominous tone and much slower pace quite suitable to the seriousness of the lyrics. It is more frighteningly applicable today than when it was created. Should have heeded this song in 1990…. Who knew to go to Megadeth for environmental action songs? “Rust in Peace… Polaris” is sung from the perspective of a nuclear missile. Cool! Takes me back to my youth until I realize there are still nuclear missiles pointed at most of us today...may they all rust in peace. Feel like I'm getting a little Halloween treat as "My Creation" treats us to some Dr. Frankenstein serenading his monster. Love the abrupt ending. I'm sitting here with my hair blown back and a huge smile on my face... I went from dreading this listen to listening to RUST IN PEACE four times through already. I did not expect a topical, comprehensible, melodic, technical, downright fun listen... a real surprise!

I like this better than Metallica. It's tight as tight, but with a bit more noise to it. Funnier, in a deadpan, angst-ridden way. Lightning fast guitar shredding, but without descending into mere typing exercises. Punk attitude and not-dumb lyrics make this tolerable. just melodic enough to make re-listenable.
Albums like this can be difficult. You really have to be in the right mood. I'd say for the genre, it was quite good and better than expected. I'd enjoy hearing it again sometime when the mood is right. For me just 2/5 for now though.
Megadeth never were and never will be even on the same level as Metallica for me, but this is a really good album.
Not that it is bad per se. But, like, Masters of Puppets covered this territory almost a decade earlier. Underwhelmed.

While not my go-to genre, it is hard to argue with the musicianship and skill that are on display in this album. Megadeth has swooping melodies and solos as they play hard and fast in an album that shows why they are held in such high regard among Metalheads. The weakest part is the vocals, which lack any sort of bite - especially in comparison to Metallica, the spawning group for Megadeth.
A band I somehow missed completely when they were around. Definitely heard the band's name a lot, and I knew Dave Mustaine's name as well, but had not listened to this album or any Megadeth before. I almost never listen to any thrash metal (very little metal of any kind, really -- nothing against it, just not super into it), but I am really enjoying this album. They play amazingly well, so wild and airtight at the same time. How can they stay in time so perfectly well at that speed? Wow. The guitar playing is fantastic. I'm indifferent about the vocals, although the style makes sense for what they are doing. Definitely have respect for what they created and recorded here.
Like every Megadeth (is that really how they spell it?) album I've checked out, it has awesome artwork and incredibly intricate music. I'm not in love with Mustaine's voice or lyrics, but that's a minor complaint. Overall a really fun metal album 4/5
Good metal album, great first 2 tracks and the rest is ok too
The Kansas City Royals enjoyed their first 25 years of existence as one of the model Major League Baseball franchises. They won 2 pennants and a World Series, and never finished in last place. Then around 1996, the franchise reversed course and spent a good 15 years as an embarrassment. They tried all sorts of gimmicks to still maintain fan interest they hoped would somehow remove the stench of the lackluster product on the field. The added black to their uniform color scheme for a few forgettable years. And most notably, they finally decided the team needed a mascot: A lion wearing a crown named Sluggerrr. This is really a long way to say if the team was any good, they wouldn't need to create an embarrassing mascot with unnecessary R:s in its name. The same goes for music bands. If the music is any good, it wouldn't need to create a mascot. It turns out Megadeth has a mascot, one prominently on display of this album and most of their other work. Apparently the mascot even shows up during concerts. What the mascot really tells us is that the music is not enough. It's a mask alright. But I can't completely dismiss this due to the fact that thrash metal doesn't appeal to me. There's a ton of metal and hard rock that clearly does speak to me. This just doesn't, but I can still see where there's a certain sector that proclaims this is the best thrash metal album of all time, or at least enjoys it. It was rough sledding for this author, but I found parts I could appreciate and save it from the 1 bin. It's fine for representing whatever thrash metal or guitar masterbation is. I'll also give the album artwork credit for telling me everything I need to know.

Not a genre I listen to or have any real knowledge of - so I will be neutral on this.
There are some weird interludes that I don't much care for. Some of these songs are impossible to deny bangers even as someone who doesn't listen to metal music.
A masterpiece.
Decent on first listen, was playing Tony Hawks 2 at the time. Title track was the main stand out and also the 2nd song on the album - Hangar 18, with an honorable mention to the instrumental type opening which was great. First listen definitely piqued interest, but have not got many natural compartors as not as punky as my usual heavy guitar stuff. Think it warrants a few relistens to properly judge.
Don't think I could make it through to the end of this thing. Pretty much the worse thing I could be given to listen to.
