Thrash rock. Not bad, if you're in the right mood. Probably a 3.2

It is very clear that Dave Mustaine did time in Metallica before moving on to his own joint. He's clearly not a great vocalist, but does he need to be? Megadeth serve catchy, camp and snarling song after song, never relenting.

The riffs are pretty glorious here, as is the cover art. I mean, what the hell is that cover even saying? I love whatever that story is. But the lyrics in the songs are pretty rough and I wish I couldn't tell what he was saying. Like if Mustaine was just constantly screaming non-sensically, I might enjoy that more. But this is pretty fun anyway.

Strong Musical performances and cutting lyrics stop this the album from feeling one- note by it’s end for me.

I really don't listen to much metal. Not really my thing. The guitar solos in this are pretty great, and it's fast and hard and all that is good. But the vocals annoy me. I liked it more than I expected to

Irgendwie geil. Tolles Tempo, sauberer Sound und Melodien, die ganz schön catchy, ja fast poppig wirken und dennoch roh genug vorgetragen werden. Gefällt mir weit besser, als so vieles ausm Genre. Dazu diese niemals verjährte Haltung zu Politik und Religion, die verlässlich Anlass zur Kritik geben. Kein Wunder, dass Metall sich von 68er Weltverbesserern abspaltete, als Hippies zum Mainstream mutierten. 3.4

Cool riffs and guitar, can’t deny Mustaine his credit. But the songs are overall missing some life to them, and the stale production always seems to be always missing something to take the album further. The vocals are also hard to listen to. They sound amateur.

Un altre dels grans clàssics del thrash que per mi no passa de bon disc, amb algun tema destacat, com 'Hangar 18' o 'Tornado of Souls'. A l'igual que 'Reign in Blood', sempre m'han semblat més autènticament clàssics altres discos posteriors, com en el cas de Megadeth 'Countdown to Extinction'... però això no treu que sigui un dels grans renombrats de l'època, i molt disfrutable

It's not Megadeth's fault I'm more of a Doom / Sludge / Slow Metal guy. But, beyond technical proficiency, I just don't get the appeal of speed metal.

God damn, I said god damn, these guys were tight. Not a big fan of their music, but they could play. Countdown was def the better album, but this one certainly holds it's place in the developing the genera.

I like this better than Metallica. It's tight as tight, but with a bit more noise to it. Funnier, in a deadpan, angst-ridden way. Lightning fast guitar shredding, but without descending into mere typing exercises. Punk attitude and not-dumb lyrics make this tolerable. just melodic enough to make re-listenable.

While not my go-to genre, it is hard to argue with the musicianship and skill that are on display in this album. Megadeth has swooping melodies and solos as they play hard and fast in an album that shows why they are held in such high regard among Metalheads. The weakest part is the vocals, which lack any sort of bite - especially in comparison to Metallica, the spawning group for Megadeth.

Much more palatable than I expected from a band called “Megadeth”

Sort of washed over me

There are some weird interludes that I don't much care for. Some of these songs are impossible to deny bangers even as someone who doesn't listen to metal music.

Decent on first listen, was playing Tony Hawks 2 at the time. Title track was the main stand out and also the 2nd song on the album - Hangar 18, with an honorable mention to the instrumental type opening which was great. First listen definitely piqued interest, but have not got many natural compartors as not as punky as my usual heavy guitar stuff. Think it warrants a few relistens to properly judge.

3.6 - Transcendent guitar and impeccable speed metal playing. Not sure about the sci-fi lyrics and some of the “tough guy” vocals that sometimes sound goofy. This was my first listen so it might click more after a couple more whirls.

Find after about the third track started to get a bit worn out. Thin and weak vocal doesn't help. Thought I would be giving this more, however its not good enough, guitar work is pretty good though.

Some good songs but Mustaine can’t sing and it detracts from the whole thing. Mix is awful.

I suppose I should hold space for socially conscious thrash metal, but it's an effort.

Made me as angry as I've ever been. Pretty sure that is the absolute aim of this album/band/genre.

Though I generally like metal, I always found Megadeth kind of tedious. Marty Friedman is incredible on this record, though, well worth the listen just for his solos. Toward the end it got kind of samey... fans of the band will fervently disagree. Dave Mustaine's voice is shrill, the tempos are mostly the same, and there's nothing al that unique to latch onto. Like Metallica's dumber little brother. Lacks real anger. Also junkies.

2.5 I gotta be real with you, I’ve heard of Megadeth, I know it’s Dave Mustaine, but I guess I’ve never really heard a song by them. I genuinely liked the instrumentation and compositions. A lot more variety than Metallica. The lyrics, also good. But hollllllyyyy shit. Mustaine’s vocals almost ruin the whole record. I don’t need my singers to actually be good singers (Dylan, Cohen, Springsteen), but their vocals have to feel “right” for the music. Guys…Mustaine sounds like Chuck E. Cheese when he sings. It’s bad. It’s maybe the most mismatched vocals I’ve ever heard for a band. It’s so annoying, so distracting, it almost tanks the whole thing.

With all the good heavy metal out there, almost none of which made this list, we get Megadeth? Famous album cover and popular at the time but do you hear any of these songs anywhere but maybe the death metal station on Sirius? No. They're just a second rate Metallica, same DNA, but with weaker vocals. Interchangeable. I blame them, and Metallica, for the slew of copycat bands that flooded the genre after 1990 and introduced some really shitty stuff that we're still enduring today. It sounds mechanical and thin to me. They try and have the guitar sound of Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, but they lack the groove to accomplish it with the same prowess. Speed for speed's sake is all I hear. I didn't enjoy a single song. "Symphony of Destruction" from their next album is their signature song and the only one I ever liked. "Tornado Of Souls" has 40M listens on Spotify, it's so not-good. 2 stars. I just don't get them

Musically this was a fine thrash metal album, fun if a bit tiring after a few tunes, but the decision to use a recording of cats having unsatisfying sex instead of a vocal track really didn't work.

I didn't particularly like Megadeth as a kid and apparently I don't like it now either. I can appreciate the musicianship but song material isn't that strong. Not to mention that Dave Mustaine is an annoying and self-centered whiner.

Genuinely how are people so in love with this kind of music. Im not being facetious i just don’t understand. It’s a few steps away from pure noise. No complexity, just slight variations on the same fucking riff on some power chords ive heard all my life against some half paked political critique. I have heard enough metal for a lifetime, if you can’t impress me at this point i will just never get it and i am fine with that.

Sounds close to the kind of repetitive noise rock that I would usually love, but sounds even closer to the repetitive metall that I tend to find boring.

I don’t have a dog in the Metallica vs Dave Mustaine fight, it’s a shame we live in the timeline where they had to part ways and we ended up with both Metallica and Megadeth on our radios. If you put a gun to my head (I know, 2nd time this week!) and made me pick one, I might just let you shoot me. This record is definitely more 80’s Thrash than what Metallica was doing by 1990. There’s a lot of fiddly guitar work that hasn’t aged very well, and I get some prog-rock influences that I wasn’t really expecting (that part might be worth exploring if I were even vaguely interested in anything else here). Overall, a pretty abrasive way to start my morning.

Album #86 Megadeth: Rust in Peace Everything that I know about Megadeth just makes them seem like cornballs, to the incredibly tacky album art (though I find most metal album covers to be this way), the incredibly tacky title, and the incredibly tacky way that Dave Mustaine conducts himself. I’m not very knowledgeable about metal, but even I am aware that this guy can’t stop talking about Metallica, though I will say I find it kind of endearing that he’s willing to hold a grudge for that long. In a way, since I’m not a Metallica fan, I always passively rooted for Megadeth when watching those interviews because I assumed Mustaine was like the Pete Best of metal, and I felt bad for him. But it turns out that, apparently, they are a very respectable band themselves. I never knew just how big they were. As for the music, I found it to be solid, but with much thrash metal, something about it doesn’t stick with me. I think it may be the repetitive distorted guitar sequences, they just don’t register in the part of my brain which tracks melodies, at least not in the same way that a Johnny Marr or a Mark Knopfler can. I think that will always be my barrier with metal; all of my favourite albums have incredibly catchy melodies and impactful lyrics, whereas metal has abrasive instrumentals that distract from the words. That said, I didn’t hate this album; I thought it was actually pretty good for what it is. Mustaine’s voice didn’t bother me at all, but I’ve heard that some find it unlistenable. Some pretty good songs and some respectable ideals presented in the lyrics, but I think this would take me quite a few listens before it started to finally stick with me. Best Tracks: Tornado of Souls, Hangar 18, Dawn Patrol Worst Track: Poison was the Cure Score out of 10: 5.5

5/10 This is not exactly a bad album. Strong music (heavy guitars, overwhelming bass and drums), varied vocals, sort of lame lyrics but whatever. It's just not my kind of music. I was bored the whole way through. How do I rate something like this?

I was ready to hate this, but it wasn’t that bad. The lyrics and their delivery are silly, but sometimes the guitars were cool. It would suck to be in a metal band and have to write metal songs all the time. I’d like to give this 2.5 stars but I can’t.

Not my typical style, but I appreciate the energy and like the drum and bass throughout. I actually ended up liking the demo tracks toward the end of the version I listened to the best. “Take no prisoners, take no shit” indeed.

Much the same as the other Megadeth album on here; on the bearable end of the spectrum, but not something I would normally choose to listen to. Technically proficient guitar playing. High two, close to three.

In spite of how incredibly technical and fast this album is, I didn't care about it. If I'm being honest, my face when I saw this recommendation was of pure disgust, due to me not being a fan of thrash metal and that I knew about the popular opinion that Dave Mustaine's voice is considered to be rather annoying. Turns out it is more tolerable than I expected, but not good enough for me to like it. For the rest of the album, as I stated, I feel very indifferent. I'll give it points for being impressively technical, but I wasn't really digging the riffs, and I never liked thrash metal solos, and if this album stands out for something is for being a riffs and solos powerhouse. I do understand why this album is seeing as a masterpiece, but it is not for my liking.

There's just something about how old thrash sounds that I really struggle with sometimes. The drums are all mixed for speed instead of impact and nothing else provides that. Dawn Patrol was interesting but then the snare comes in and sounds like a coughing baby, oh well.

Certainly a head banger, but not for me. Wouldn’t listen again.

I was a metalhead in the 80s and early 90s when this was around and my first show was actually Megadeth. Listening to these albums again reminds me why we're still listening to Alternative and Grunge in 2026 vs metal cause it hasn't aged well and really all kinda sounds the same.

I'm really not sure if it was the fact I listened to this while trying to not fall over on black ice while on my commute, or it's inherent thrashiness, but post listening I was extremely anxious. I thought it was incredibly samey and the lack of variety really hindered it. I also had Master of Puppets stuck in my head all day afterwards and I'm assuming getting a different artist's (superior) song as a earworm is probably not a good sign. 2/5

Att lyssna på Megadeth är lite som höra Stravinskys Våroffer. Man imponeras av spelskickligheten, snabbheten, finesser i varje del. Så vida är det rätt intressant. Däremot är det inte musik i övrigt som jag njuter av, framförallt är sånginsatserna på rätt låg nivå.

Inledningen av de flesta låtarna är rätt bra. Rytmiskt, malande grov. Men det som hade kunnat bli något förstörs i mina öron av trista gitarrsolon och medelmåttig sång. Roligaste hårdrocken vi fått oss tilldelade?

As background music particularly for existing in spaces where noone knows you i gotta admit this is kinda incredible (keen for your review emily assuming you listened somewhere over the oceans). If i listen to what this man is trying to say to me it sounds like a school of rock parody i fear his messages only detract from this experience - also if i stop to think about the music/vibe for a minute its diminishing returns but look for cultivating an almost entirely false narrative of how one might be perceived it really works - oh no the man has started speaking again thats another star from you bucko

This was really in one ear, out the other for me. Can appreciate it for what it is but it’s really not my jam.

I finally listened to an album!! obviously metal is not my most listened to genre so this was not my favourite. but I loved the song names (poison was the cure, tornado of souls) and also those guitars were electrifying

An impressive outing. The lyrics are impressively bad. They seem to be the political ramblings of an angsty teen which in and of itself isn’t necessarily a terrible concept but they manifest in the clunkiest angsty metaphors. This, coupled with Mustaine’s voice make every time he’s singing an infuriating endeavour. Musically, it is impressive, and I find myself enjoying the groove of it all when there’s no singing. During those times I can see why people enjoy this genre. It’s hard to say if I like this more or less than the Metallica one. Musically, it feels better produced and less tinny but I’d still rather listen to the like 7 good Metallica songs than this again.

I’m not a heavy metal fan and only able to listen to this music for a very short time, so I listened to this album in 3 short sessions. This is one of those albums that make me think the folks over there at 1K1 Albums You Have To Hear Inc. are pulling a fast one on us listeners. Not only do I think this album doesn't need to be on this list, I don't even think this is Megadeth's best album. (The fact that it was nominated for a Grammy just shows you how corrupt that system is. But I digress) I used to love this band. Now I don't. I don't know what happened, but I'm sure it happened sometime around Rust In Peace.

There’s something academic about Mustaine’s approach to thrash or maybe it’s metal for nerds? It keeps it apart from Slayer’s speed at all costs and Metallica’s classic rock leanings. Yet the halftime changes and whatnot did feel like they overlapped with where hardcore was going around the same time. It’s Rush or Maiden but for X-Files fans. Anyhow I thought this was great fun, even a little scary when I was a preteen, and while I admire the changes and performances it’s pretty silly stuff.

Just can't get on board with the vocal. 2/5.

I knew Hangar 18 coming into this and it's never made me want to discover more Megadeth. They're fine but it's not really my thing. I'm sure I'll raise some ire here but to me, they sound like a poor man's Metallica. You can hear the similarities between them but whereas Metallica were capable of writing grander, deeper songs, this feels very straight ahead, meat and potatoes thrash. I delayed about 2 weeks to listen to this and it is definitely not for me. All the songs sound the same except for Dawn Patrol. I understand it is popular and I appreciate the skill to play those solos, and even the eplace on the list, but this is too niche for me. 2/5

Definitely can hear the technical prowess on the guitar. But this hard core metal isn't for me.

Similar review to Megadeth's other album on the 1001 list, it has insanely cool guitar and drum work, but thrash-metal isn't something I'd actively listen to.

A very capable band. If I was into this stuff Dave Mustaine's name would be more familiar to me. It's probably good that I can't hear the lyrics. I presume they're lame. This is definitely a better record IMO than Metallica's "Black Album." 2

I have never been a big thrash metal fan and while I know this is one of the best thrash metal albums, it ranks lower than many other albums I've listened and will listen on this list.

Always thought Megadeth was super lame metal.

Except for the funky technical guitar work this was monotonously boring.

Dave mustaine is a racist pos. He may have mellowed to be not so over time. But there’s a reason Metallica breaks records and this sells respectably. As immature and obtuse as Metallica can be they were never racist or even homophobic. Everyone who wanted to listen could listen. This is extremely good musically. And is one of the blueprints for thrash. But its unpleasant themes ruin it for me. 2 stars.

Nah, I struggled with this one. Thrash metal feels so one paced that the raw energy gets lost somewhat as it all blurs together as one long track with lots of different solos. This album is also let down by the weak vocals, he sounds a like bit of a lightweight Hetfield (who also isn’t a great vocalist). There were some fun unexpected chord progressions and occasional sort of pace changes, which I wish there were more of. All in all I can’t say there’s one track that stood out, and have no interest in listening again.

Oof don't like this guy's voice. I like some of the instrumentation but it's all maybe a little too heavy for me.

I guess I have to respect Megadeth for finding a sound they liked and sticking with it in spite of what I am sure must have been intense pressure to vary the tempo every once in a while. Maybe this was supposed to be a concept album to determine if anyone could tell it was just the same song repeated 10 or 11 times?

Metallica is a mediocre metal band, and Megadeth is their even worse spin off. Mustaine's voice is irritating, but not half as irritating as his arch righ-wing politics. I'll give it two stars for the decent riffing.

How can an album going this hard be boring? I don’t know how they managed to do that, but they did. Maybe because every killer, iconic guitar riff in popular culture has pauses in it and a rhythmic pattern. These guys sure do know how to play nonstop eighth and sixteen notes without pausing anywhere in their riffs to make anything musical or with melody. Yawn. So fucking boring.

Ultimately by my contemporary ears this album was very silly especially in terms of the singing style and lyrics. Musically I appreciate the guitar virtuosity. It's bombastic and over the top. Nuance is not a thing here and it's not supposed to be. Big skills on display and I like the dual lead guitar thing, but it's not something I'd personally want to listen to for straight enjoyment, rather for a laugh while doing a Beavis and Butthead impersonation. This is probably an age thing too. Born in 1980, I'd bet this hits a nostalgia button for folks just a tad bit older than me since I didn't get into thrash metal until I stole my brother's cassette of Metallica's black album...

I liked the guitars but not much else

Vähän hyvää ja paljon huonoa. Ankaraa riffittelyä, mutta riffit tuntuvat usein pakkopullalta tyyliin "laitetaan niin monta kuin mahtuu". Megadeth ei ole koskaan ollut omia suosikkeja.

I do love crazy guitar riffs, but it’s harder for me to connect with albums with this type of singing. I’m into the sound until the vocalist comes in and then it alienates me a bit.

The Good: Thrash Metal The Bad: Mustaine’s voice… The Ugly: What happens to the genre once you remove the first h in Thrash… Not a metal head. Appreciate the guitar though… Still, there isn’t a single metal record which I would play on repeat, so I will dish out the low-low score of 2* as I don’t hate it, but I can’t find myself to like it enough for a middle of the road kind of judging...

Do like me some trash metal every now and then, but this didn't hit the spot for me.

My youth went with "Peace Sells..." and "So Far, So Good...", at the point this album came out, I was listening to death metal and other extreme types of music. What I did remember was the extremely tinny soundscapes they liked on their albums. It's like they used and inverted V-shape for the soundprofile for many of the instruments, except guitars upper end. (I know of the remasters, they're compressed to shit. The original mix has dynamic range, also that's the version that has the merits to be on this list). There are some nice moments, but for the most part this is quite boring record. Merely technical trickstery for the same of being technical and nimble fingers wankery, over melodies and good riffs.

Not memorable. Wasn’t as into this as I was Peace Sells…but also wasn’t in the mood for this vibe today so that could be part of it 😂

7/12/24 As much as I like this music and understand what Megadeth are to this genre as the Big Four, I thought this album was pretty weak.

I think I’d like Megadeth a little more if Dave Mustaine wasn’t their frontman. His voice is grating to me. The music is okay. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it either. Some of the songs are too long, but the album itself isn’t totally u pleasant. This is a 2.5 for me, but I’m rounding down largely because I won’t listen to it again.

There are no 2 bands more intrinsically linked than Metallica and Megadeth. While Megadeth gets closer than most, they never quite reach the peaks Metallica does. Rust In Peace doesn’t have the dynamics a Ride the Lightning has 5.2/10

Can't believe we had 2 Thrash albums in a row. I didn't like this very much -- way too harsh -- but it was still better than Slayer.

Surprised that there’s bits here I like. Technically it’s impressive, the power is there and pulled me in - but it gets boring, if not a little tedious, quickly.

I dislike the entire aesthetic of this, from the sound to the album art. Listening to it doesn't hurt, but I don't see myself seeking this out ever.

Despite being the best of its kind so far, it's still 80s shredfest metal, which is so devoid of any content other than lust, hate, cars. And the guitar solos are booooring. This one straddles the line between so-bad-it's-good and so-good-it's-bad. I just don't care about this genre.

I was surprised I didn’t hate this album more, but the opening couple of tracks weren’t terrible.

Some cool riffs. A little samey for an entire album listen but there is fun playing and cool aesthetic.

More music for teenage boys and incels. Very similar to Iron Maiden - massively overblown, almost operatic vocal and furious guitars, played very very fast and with absolutely no musicality or feeling. It's just guitar as a competitive sport.

Not my cup of tea

I didn't like this album nearly as much as I thought I would. I found it, more than anything else, boring? My relationship with metal music is mostly one of passing interest, I really like the first 4 Black Sabbath records, I love the first 3 Iron Maiden records, but beyond that, I haven't ever really found anything I super connected with in the genre. A couple Metallica songs or Judas Priest songs here or there, but I also wouldn't say I dislike metal. And I wouldn't say I strongly ~disliked~ this album, but I didn't like it, that's for sure. I went back and listened to some of it over again to see if maybe I was just missing something, and I just felt like I wanted it to be over. I even went back and listened to Iron Maiden's first album and immediately I was headbanging along with it, came back to Hanger 18, and just, I don't like it. Again, I don't dislike it, but I would never ever pick it to play. Also, I'm now reading lyrics (I never read lyrics, I almost don't pay attention to lyrics) is the song Lucretia about Dave Mustaine taking a walk around his house? Anyway, I don't know why I don't like it, but I don't. 2/5

3/10 - It was similar to the Iron Maiden albums but just significantly worse. His voice was annoying especially in five magics when the second voice joins in. Do not plan on ever listening to this again
