he'll yeah kind of samey
Good fun thrash metal
My dad's going to be mad at me but it was just okay in my humble opinion
Solid
Don't really know what to say about this. Metal is usually 'my' genre but this didn't sit well with me and that disappoints me somehow. I really disliked the vocals. I'll try listening to it some time again.
I'm a fan of the face-melting guitar solos. I want Jack Black to make a film based on this album, where he sings all the songs.
Ganske fett!
Ive never purposefully listened to megadeth. I thought it was a good listen with interesting riffs and some odd time signatures here and there. The opening song was like 3 songs in one. Hangar 18 was probably my favorite and Lucretia right after that. Dave mustaine and Nick menza are a great duo
Decent. But just after an Iron Maiden album, it felt like too much.
I’m far from a metal fan but I was pleased by how inoffensive this was.
It's nice if you're trying to get stuff done. It makes you move faster.
I might have to go back and listen to Peace Sells.. because this album didn't really grab me and if this is the best..... Fave track: Rust In Peace...Polaris
First time listening to Megadeth overall I found them alright. I would listen to them again
Yep, classic Dave.
Metal at it‘s best…but not kind of music!
RIFFAGE! RIFFAGE! RIFFAGE! You can tell why this is the blueprint for so many metal bands. Lotsa tempo and key changes. Sledgehammer rhythm. Awesome solos. Would I want to listen to Mustaine and crew every day? Probably not. Is this classic peel-your-face-off evolution of Iron Maiden? You betcha. Unexpected banger: Poison Was The Cure/Tornado of Souls.
Some nice sounds but save yourself some cash n play an old Rainbow album at 45rpm. Same result
I don't think I like it
Would be higher rated if Dave’s voice didn’t bug me so much
This album is kind of just noise to me, with no individual standouts, yet it is a sound I really enjoy and would choose to play again. It isn’t my favorite metal, nor the most memorable, but it is solid.
Not a huge fan of 80s/90s metal but this is a very solid album.
While I can tolerate some off-the-wall vocals (my favorite singer might be Peter Hammill from Van der Graaf Generator), Dave Mustaine's vocals are absolutely atrocious. However, all the music is excellently performed and recorded.
Not even that heavy, pussies. Actually, was a good energy for the morning at work
It was metal
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah I liked this one, amazing vocal and riffs Favourite song: Track 9 - Rust in peace…Polaris
Didn’t quite do it for me, felt like it was lacking an edge 5/10
Known before: Band Standouts: Holy Wars... The Punishment Due; Take No Prisoners 7/10
Not my kind of music, but some of it is fine.
Not my genre. I can see how it is important though.
Don't tell me. Fourth studio album? Damn! I am good. I like the album cover. And as far as heavy metal goes, it's pretty decent.
Hard and fast, and Dave Mustaine's voice does work for me. Unfortunately, the songs are generally just OK... Hangar 18 and Tornado of Souls are the only tracks that stand out.. .though I also like the speed of Poison Was the Cure.
Some good, some boring
Not really my style. Some of it is fun.
already heard but its alright
Meh!
Geiler Thrash.
"Immense in my girth, erect I stand tall" I'm slowly realizing that I enjoy metal music a lot more than I let on (both to myself and to others). In my mind, megadeth was this death metal band with incomprehensible screams and muddled guitar riffs played over crazy time signature drums. In actuality, it's (metal is) just a step up from hard rock music, on the level of metallica. There were a bunch of cool musical ideas in this album, particularly in the form of the underlying guitar/bass riff that repeats. I think I would've preferred the vocals to be a little bit harsher, but I suppose that's part of the appeal of this "level" of metal music. Cool stuff, especially T1-"Holy Wars..." and T7 "Tornado of Souls" (playlist track). 3/5
Favorite songs: Holy Wars The album was pretty standard metal. It was good to listen the whole album.
not my thing
Surprisingly good and not too cheesy
I think this barely squeaks out a 4. I found the songwriting to be actually quite good, including the lyrics which is weird to say about an 80's metal record. The guitar solos are AWESOME and the guitar work in general is really inventive and TIGHT TIGHT. The vocal delivery is not my favourite, but I enjoyed this a bit more than I typically do Metallica releases. I think it's possible I wouldn't like anything else from Megadeth but this one really did it for me.
This is not my jam but wasn't nearly as bad to revisit as I'd feared. For one, they're not Metallica and for that we can be grateful - I've of course always lumped them together (and thrown them away) as Dave Mustaine was a former member, but this has far more interesting melodic turns for me. Seems odd to say about a thrash metal album but hey that's why we're doing this. I don't like the vocals - surprise surprise - but he's far more palatable than James Hetfield's ridiculous growl-bark-in-E-minor. Essentially he's easier to ignore; maybe some of that is how he's mixed - just a bit lower in the mix, giving the music more power. Obviously the musicianship is quite incredible. Anyways even though I'm not gonna be reaching for it anytime soon, I have to admit I liked it more than I'd expected (especially with how low I view Dave Mustaine as a human). 5/10 3 stars.
As with all Megadeth albums, the guitar work is great but it’s just not really my vibe. Dave’s voice isn’t actually too annoying on this one either
It's not what I usually listen to but it does make you feel a little cool when you listen to it while doing ordinary things. I quite liked Lucretia and Take No Prisoners in particular.
If you're looking for an album that's all about hanging and banging to killer guitar riffs, "Rust In Peace" by Megadeth is your ticket! "Rust In Peace" isn't just music – it's a workout for your senses. Imagine yourself in a gym, pumping iron with the most adrenaline-pumping tunes blasting through your headphones – that's the kind of energy we're talking about here. The killer guitar riffs on this album are like sonic grenades exploding in your ears. Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman tag-team their axes, delivering a barrage of intense, mind-bending solos that will leave your air guitar skills in awe. "Hangar 18" is a prime example of this shredding goodness that demands to be cranked up to 11. "Rust In Peace" stands as a testament to the power of genuine metal. With its killer guitar riffs, workout music vibes, and the feeling of early '90s high school football, this album is a sonic time machine that captures the essence of a bygone era.
Here we go again with what literally sounds like vocals by The Crypt Keeper. Other than that, it's actually kinda good.
I thought this was just ok. I listened to it loud.
Pretty cool
The songs kind of all sounded similar.
Hanger 18 baby B^)
Most enjoyable metal album I’ve heard in awhile. Some cool stuff here.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Holy Wars...The Punishment Due (1) 2 - Rust In Peace - Polaris (9) 3 - Poison Was the Cure (5)
just not my genre. Didn't think that it was bad neither did I love it so... 3
I mean it's a decent thrash album. I wouldn't recommend it over Metallica from the same era though. Not quite a four but a very strong 3 star from me. If you enjoy thrash it is worth a shot.
Run of the mill Metallica B-Sides
A top genre album - definitely one of the trash metal classics - immediately hit me even if it was actually the first time I sat down and listened to it end to end. Maybe not as strong as Reign in Blood or Master of Puppets and it does kind of taper towards the end.
Cutting edge metal for the time. Ages well
Not bad, just not my thing
Absolutely nothing wrong with thrash metal you can dance to. Reminded me of being a teenager in mostly good ways. Fun nostalgic listen.
3/5. Honestly, not as enjoyable as their first. It’s got some great songs but as an album, it doesn’t flow that nicely. The guitar is fantastic, don’t get me wrong, but the songs themselves could use some work. Still rocks hard.
I was never into this style of metal, it always sounded cheap and ridiculous to me. This album however may be the best thing I've ever heard that sounds like this. I enjoyed a few songs, didn't skip any, it never annoyed me, didn't feel redundant, the band sounds skilled. I still don't like this music, but I can definitely hear that Rust In Peace is at the top of its game.
Strap in, hold tight and make sure your medical insurance is current. This is fast tempo stuff. Not for the faint-hearted. No sugar required.
Honestly, I don't know what to think about this album. It has its moments, and it has the original taste, but I think there is not so high production value, like e.g. Metallica, etc.
3.5/5
Good
3.5
YEAH MOTHERFUCKER!!! HERE WE GO!!! Almost as good as my morning coffee! I feel like this will get old really fast but right now it's fantastic!! The singing is unnecessary! It's growing on me, starting to enjoy the singing
Really liked the guitar and solos on Hangar 18. Easily my favourite track of the bunch and made listening to this album worthwhile. Politically infused lyrics too... "I've seen too much, I know too much" Overall as an album, it had that standard heavy metal sound. Maybe that comment is a reflection on how little I listen to heavy metal. Aside form Hangar18, nothing really distinguished the album from being a generic heavy album. I really like the political lyrics and album cover though. Looking through their discography, their album art is quite fascinating. Musicwise, I think I'd need to listen to more heavy metal (and more of this album) to fully 'get' it. Based on what I heard today, it was alright.
Sounds very aged but hey it was listenable.
Not really my thing but enjoyed it more than I expected.
Certainly not one for everyone but a great soundtrack to a school shooting for sure
Some bangers, but too many widdles
Honestly surprisingly good metal record. Love the chunky guitar riffs and insane solos. Vocals are not my favorite though.
Not totally my bag but there’s some great guitar work in here and definitely better than I expected
Haven't listened to this all the way through in years. Expected to give a 4 (or higher), but it wasn't as great as I remember. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Really good fun! Enjoyed the riffing, thought it lost a bit of steam as it went on but I'd be happy hearing any of these at a seedy dive. Three and a half Fave track: Hangar 18
Great technical playing and really funny
Very sonically interesting, tho it gets maybe too cliche-macho-metal for my in some places for my tastes. The second side really picks it up tho, and even gets a bit funky
genuinely proper guitars and instrumentation - vocals lack a bit of oopmph for me
Kinda of fun metal, don't mind when it's like this, but it's still in "don't mind" rather than "enjoy"
Marty Friedman is an absolute dynamo. A sterling guitarist who has magical fingers. He's the strength of this album. There's something about Dave Mustaine that really bothers me. He seems really toxic and his voice grates on me. Some great songs but too much filler.
Thrash Metal is sometimes almost comical to me. This is pretty Thrash Metal. Obviously some great technique and playing on this album but it's like the cotton candy of metal. Quickly melts after consumption and just a transient experience.
Ears are tired after this one.
Decent album. A little same-y throughout though.
Good metal with enough variety across the album to make it not feel the same every track.
Loves the rock!
6/10 not bad, but sorta mid
I really like the album cover here much more than the music. Some of the guitar work is really cool, but the vocals are absolutely awful. Very high energy though.
Thrash metal. Ni fu ni fa.
Expected not to like and was pleasantly surprised. Pleasantly and Megadeth work well together don't they?
Billl
Great instrument work, but found it hard to understand the lyrics clearly so lessened the enjoyment overall. Had moments of sounding like their cotemporaries like Metallica and Guns and Roses Favourite Tracks Poison was the cure, Lucretia
Two monster tunes (Hanger 18 and Tornado of Souls) and a great balance of shred and tune. Not my type of music necessarily, but I've enjoyed listening to this.
This is... not bad?!? Surprised me a bit, but still not crazy about the singing. 2.5
I just can't get into Megadeth. It may be the Thrash Metal genre as a whole, but I find Dave Mustaine's vocals especially annoying. Music and riffs are fine, but nothing to write home about. 3/5
It does what it does
Front half of the album is awesome. Back half lost me a bit. I’m enjoying it as a guilty pleasure but would hate to think this is earnest, serious lyrically.
Favourite song: Lucretia
It's okay
Music was top tier. I was always keeping up with the bassist, attentive to the guitarist, and driven by the drummer. I don't think I like the classic metal tenor for the vocalist though. I'm between 3-4, but based on my past rankings we're going with 3
Well it definitely ain't Minideth.
Never been a thrash metal fan - but was really won over with this album - soaring guitar solos, magnificent guitar harmonies, driving bass and some amazing drumming - let down by frankly silly vocals unfortunately
Ágætis metall. Ekkert sem ég hlusta á dags daglega.
Possibly I’ve seen too much.
dwarf fortress test failed - dworf fortress music better.
very metal
Talented musicians I’d say. Interesting lyrics at times and powerful at times. For some unknown reason I was never into Megadeath; still not.
I can understand how 6 minutes of face melting riffs and drums that sound as if they were produced in a machine because after the 10th take the drummer had lost all feeling in his hands can not be everyone’s cup of tea, however I fucking LOVE this tea. Growing up with a brother who was obsessed with guitar every single song here taps into my RedBull sponsorship when I was 10 years old after I shredded “Enter Sandman” by Metallica at the local IX Indoor Amusement park. The fact that Megadeth has 20 albums ranging from 1985 all the way to 2019 is not only impressive longevity wise not mostly impressive in the fact that they could 1) Find new ways to have guitar solos integrated into their songs that seemed to have influenced popular bands like DragonForce and 2) That there is still a group of people out there that is listening to this music because however influential and incredibly talented Megadeth was, I think most would agree that 5 minute guitar solos today belong in Jam Bands or when I go to Kingston Mines to experience some live jazz. Overall, if I was trying to max at the gym I would suggest turning this on or any Russian HardBass you can find on SoundCloud. Either would do the trick. This shit kicks ASS and even if it’s not your jam it can be seen as a total joke and whiles are funny, jokes are also good things, and Megadeth was and is a good thing for music.
not my thing but could’ve been worse
Siksi 3/5
This was a good album to listen while cooking. My thoughts: lots of shredding, somewhat cliched, lyrics silly at times. I bet this sounded more original when it came out.
Ok I’ve heard something from all the Big Four now, and I reckon Megadeth are a comfortable second for me (behind Metallica, obvs). There’s just more to hold onto in terms of hooks and melody than, say, Slayer. Some great guitar parts on here. It’s more in the Iron Maiden mould: a bit cheesy at times but good, clean, speed metal fun. 3.5
Technically mad but not really my kind if rock
Me rappelle le old school Metallica.
Extremely enjoyable, fast paced metal music. It's just, I would happily never to it listen again.
Leuk metalplaatje, maar het mist precies iets. Kan niet direct duiden wat
The album was an a-okay listen. Then I remembered that Dave Mustaine got in a fight with Men's Wearhouse to the point of a lawsuit and I couldn't stop laughing.
Idk I guess this is something. The riffs are tight but this just isn’t a genre I care about.
Guitars are awesome, rest is ok, but not great.
I was surprised by how much I liked this. Felt more like hair metal than what I think of as metal.
Thrash indeed
A classic face melting album that would get you and your bros pumped at the gym or in the garage while you got your drink on. “Dawn Patrol” sounded kind of dorky though, for lack of better words. For the right mood though, this album is legit. Maybe not ideal for studying or putting the baby to bed, but maybe you need a little melting to get you through your day.
This band has never really connected with me, but there are a few thrash bangers and a lot of prescient lyrics on here that make it enjoyable.
I was surprised that I enjoyed the first half of this. It then got a bit Mega and a bit deathy...
Can't stand the vocals
Holy wars... The punishment due - strong start, guitar is obviously going to be a main focus Hangar 18 - this is pretty cool👍 Take no prisoners- great riff👍 Five magics - quite long intro. Like how guitar interacts with vocal line. What in the dungeons and dragons are these lyrics. Great outdo solo Poison was the care- Guitar great as always, but vocals are fast and too drowned out for me, especially considering personal topic Lucretia- this is a bop tbh. What a nice ghost😊👍 Tornado of Souls - another great 1-2 of vocals then solo👍 Dawn patrol - how does this sound like a mole Rust in peace... Polaris- weird framing device singing from perspective of missile. Kinda weird also cold war is over thought you'd like to know This isn't really my thing, but is a great put together album. 3/5
A couple songs were definitely bangers. Metal is not much my thing anymore, but this sounded good. About halfway through I had hear about as much as I was going to. When the music when silent, only them did I know it was over.
Good
Motherfucker can't say 'polaris' properly.
Solid metal, no standouts
A little too much showing off
Can’t deal with the vocals
Cool songs, high school notebook lyrics (a good thing), but damn I sure got shred fatigue.
Thrashy.
Solid but influential stuff.
Monta hyvää biisiä ja kuuntelen uudelleen varmasti jossain vaiheessa. Ei silti ihan taso riitä kovimpien levyjen joukkoon joten painetaan kolmonen.
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Production was really solid.
Not really my style, very cool though, 7/10
Guitar go fast
It's the first good album since Dave stopped sulking about not being in Metallica
idk if i enjoy their sound but we will see. heavy metal?
Classic head banging heavy metal. Fantastic guitar riffs and double pedal drum thrashing. I don’t find this type of music easy to listen to and wouldn’t choose it but totally appreciate the skills.
Surprised to have really enjoyed it. First real listen to a heavy metal album, will certainly listen to it again.
It's energetic isn't it. So this is what my mates were listening to at school. I was happy with Faith No More. Does sound pretty much exactly like I imagined it to. Apparently massively influential, so again the curse of I've heard loads influenced by it but not the thing itself. All good metal, not massively my thing, I think I prefer my metal slightly less noodly in, always space for some of this for me but more likely in small doses. Mind you the solos and rhythm guitar for the second half of Lucretia are excellent.
It's possible that if this came out in 1971, when I stopped listening to Tom Jones and Sandler and Young and started listening to Black Sabbath, I would have been all over it. It’s easy to dismiss them now, since I've had no interest in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th waves of metal. But, the guitar playing is suitably over the top (and definitely catches your attention), they have good energy, nice changes of pace and the lyrics aren’t garbage. I guess every generation will spawn new metal-heads and kids born in the late 70s needed metal they could call their own.
Not bad, not great. I like a lot of the riffs, but there's also quite a few which just kind of sound like "insert generic thrash riff". That's kind of what you get with the big four, to be fair. Also not a fan of Mustaine's voice.
Not a huge thrash metal fan, but appreciate this is very good.
Very heavy as expected, I think I had heard one song before. Not my favorite genera but can respect it.
Musically really good. 4 star. Takin a point off for the cringey lyrics though.
I used to be a bigger Megadeth fan than I am now, so this album isn't as appealing to me as it once would have been. Also, there are only a few instances where I feel Dave Mustaine's voice actually suits metal, so I did not enjoy that aspect of this album. Some of the riffs were pretty good I do have to say. Otherwise it's simply not for me.
***
Some great agression and rhythm, but not enough hooks for me.
Rust in Peace by Megadeth (1990) What excels on this album are the guitar performances by Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman, both of whom display a virtuosity that is beyond classic. And the compositions go well beyond simple chord progressions and driving beats. They are intricate, with fulsome use of tempo changes, metric variety, wild percussive riffs, and vivid tonal colors. It’s interesting how much of the solo lead guitar work is performed by Friedman, but it seems that the final lead phrases on each track are pretty generally taken by Mustaine, as if to underscore who’s the boss. Lead vocals by Mustaine are, however, are less than dazzling. His effort to sound evil is undermined by a rather squeaky timbre (although the frog croak non-melody on “Dawn Patrol” is interesting). I mostly wanted to tune out the ‘singing’ just to listen to the extraordinary guitar work. Backing vocals by bassist David Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza don’t offer much assistance. And lyrics are well below par, focusing on themes of denunciation, vengeance, judgment, apocalyptic warnings, darkside cosmologies, unstable psyches, and angry antipathy toward the instrumentalities of the Cold War (which, in 1991, was about to come to a stunning end with the collapse of the Soviet Union—Megadeth weren’t the only ones blindsided by this one). There ain’t a lot of love here. And whatever love is expressed (“Poison Was the Cure”) is quickly regretted. Nice music for channeling one’s anger, but when you’re done you’ll want to sit under a tree and listen to the wind. 3/5
MEGADETH!!!!! ☠💀☠💀💀☠💀☠☠💀☠☠💀 This album was more intense than the Liverpool Man City rivalry....and that's saying something.
I have a soft spot for certain types/eras of metal, this is not one of my preferred ones though
I'll just get this out of the way: I prefer Metallica. Is Mustaine trying to ripoff Axel Rose's vocal style, or is that just the unfortunate way he sings? If you just wanna rock and don't care how this album will do it for you. There's plenty of slamming metal guitar work to go around. But overall it gets repetitive and bland by the back half of the album. Mega-meh.
File under : the kind of metal that has aliens and shit on the cover for some reason
Better than I expected
I struggle to separate it from the other Megadeth album we had earlier on, but the guitars still sounded really good
Not a huge heavy metal fan, but I did enjoy this lore than expected
I've always thought of Megadeath as less than. Not sure why. I've never owned any, this will be the first I listen to all the way through. I appreciate the over the top silly cover, that bodes well. Holy Wars is a super strong start. Yeah, the whole album is strong. The riffs are there, it's fast and hard, the lyrics are silly. Gets the blood pumping. But still, put it all together and it doesn't quite hit the mark for me. I don't feel emotion, or sense of humor, or much besides adrenalin. I guess that's why there's more than one band in the world.
Hress plata, nokkuð gaman að henni.
Mustaine’s vocals aren’t… that great. The guitar is pretty technically amazing but a bit “paint by numbers” - not much original happening there. Not the best Megadeth record, but it’s fine.
Pure and simple: this album rocks. I had heard a couple of Megadeth songs before, but I had never gone out of way to give one of their albums a full listen. After giving this one a go, I would say it would be much harder to find a thrash metal album that is more impressive instrumentally than 'Rust in Peace'. The guitars and drums are SO powerful, and the production allows every single note and beat to stand out on its own. There are a ton of solos here, and they are all excellent/fit in perfectly within each track. The one thing I did know about Megadeth going into this record is their leader Dave Mustaine's involvement in Metallica during their early years. I tried to keep Metallica comparisons at a minimum and evaluate this on its own, but one thing that was apparent to me is that a lot of these songs were shorter and relied on defined riffs which are very characteristic of songs off of 'Kill Em All'. The one song that tried something different than this was the opener 'Holy Wars', and that is the best song on the album IMO. I'd be curious to know if Megadeth relied on shorter songs moving forward or if they expanded to longer/multi-part songs on future releases. While I was a fan of the music and short track lengths, I will say that I don't think Mustaine is a great vocalist. His voice never completely ruined any of the songs for me (I thought it was incorporated about as good as it could have been in the mix), but I do feel like I would have been able to take in the lyrics better and just feel an overall stronger presence if the vocals were a bit better. Overall, a great metal album with one setback that keeps it from being a great album in general. 3.5/5.
Solid metal album - appreciated the variation in instrumental arrangements so it wasn’t just 40 straight minutes of chugging. Some questionable vocals near the end, but overall an enjoyable listen (which is apparently more than I can usually say for LPs in this genre)
Did. Not Listen
Its alright I guess. Sounds like generic rock to me tho.
I'm not a huge fan of thrash metal. But this is a damn good album for what it is. Great production values, their playing is TIGHT. They would be great to see live.
Not a big fan of metal music. This album was so-so. I think it has some interesting moments from good guitar riffs to vocals, but will not listen to it again
They're no Metallica... But they shred.
Too heavy for my tastes
Not my favourite but good guitar work
Thrash rock. Not bad, if you're in the right mood. Probably a 3.2
It is very clear that Dave Mustaine did time in Metallica before moving on to his own joint. He's clearly not a great vocalist, but does he need to be? Megadeth serve catchy, camp and snarling song after song, never relenting.
The riffs are pretty glorious here, as is the cover art. I mean, what the hell is that cover even saying? I love whatever that story is. But the lyrics in the songs are pretty rough and I wish I couldn't tell what he was saying. Like if Mustaine was just constantly screaming non-sensically, I might enjoy that more. But this is pretty fun anyway.
Strong Musical performances and cutting lyrics stop this the album from feeling one- note by it’s end for me.
Very solid metal album. Nothing groundbreaking, but decent tracks throughout.
This was a really solid metal album and enjoyed it. 7/10.
I really don't listen to much metal. Not really my thing. The guitar solos in this are pretty great, and it's fast and hard and all that is good. But the vocals annoy me. I liked it more than I expected to
Não aprecio
Irgendwie geil. 3.4
Cool riffs and guitar, can’t deny Mustaine his credit. But the songs are overall missing some life to them, and the stale production always seems to be always missing something to take the album further. The vocals are also hard to listen to. They sound amateur.
Not bad but lacking any standout things, just too "standard"
So that’s metal
did not expect to like this album as much as i do, a solid piece of work. did not like poison was the cure, there’s just so much happening in that tune
It's not Megadeth's fault I'm more of a Doom / Sludge / Slow Metal guy. But, beyond technical proficiency, I just don't get the appeal of speed metal.
God damn, I said god damn, these guys were tight. Not a big fan of their music, but they could play. Countdown was def the better album, but this one certainly holds it's place in the developing the genera.
Instrumentally very good, but dragged down by bad vocals.
meh. if I were 14 maybe.
I like this better than Metallica. It's tight as tight, but with a bit more noise to it. Funnier, in a deadpan, angst-ridden way. Lightning fast guitar shredding, but without descending into mere typing exercises. Punk attitude and not-dumb lyrics make this tolerable. just melodic enough to make re-listenable.
Not bad, sounds dated
Great album. The opening track shows the awesome guitar playing on this album. Tornado of souls and hangar 18. Stand out tracks. The album also flows very well.
Pretty alright. 6/10
While not my go-to genre, it is hard to argue with the musicianship and skill that are on display in this album. Megadeth has swooping melodies and solos as they play hard and fast in an album that shows why they are held in such high regard among Metalheads. The weakest part is the vocals, which lack any sort of bite - especially in comparison to Metallica, the spawning group for Megadeth.
Good metal album, great first 2 tracks and the rest is ok too
Much more palatable than I expected from a band called “Megadeth”
Sort of washed over me
There are some weird interludes that I don't much care for. Some of these songs are impossible to deny bangers even as someone who doesn't listen to metal music.
Decent on first listen, was playing Tony Hawks 2 at the time. Title track was the main stand out and also the 2nd song on the album - Hangar 18, with an honorable mention to the instrumental type opening which was great. First listen definitely piqued interest, but have not got many natural compartors as not as punky as my usual heavy guitar stuff. Think it warrants a few relistens to properly judge.
Almost a 4
3.5
not my type of metal, but good listen
never been a big fan of megadeth, not a bad album though
Heavy metal. Surprisingly good.
Listened to this w Jami April maki g Mexican lasagna and sloppy joes
Good soundtrack to crash things.
thrash is not really my thing, okay-ish.
A little heavy but pretty good. 0RS
This was fine, definitely a bit much for my taste tho.
This was metal alright. Nothing craaaazy but sick guitar
Never gonna be something I'd listen to, but it's more tuneful than I expected and the talent of the musicians is impressive
3.6 - Transcendent guitar and impeccable speed metal playing. Not sure about the sci-fi lyrics and some of the “tough guy” vocals that sometimes sound goofy. This was my first listen so it might click more after a couple more whirls.
That's megadeth.
This is quite naff but I enjoyed it more than I expected. 'Hangar 18' is sick and 'Rust in Peace... Polaris' sounds like a Kyle Mooney bit
Shredding guitar virtuoso from mustaine and Friedman. Really good, great sound but tracks can blend into each other.
Didn’t give it the attention I should have but seemed more interesting than I was expecting
meh, i like fast guitar.. but his voice
Didn't enjoy the vocals as much as the rest of it. But good classic metal
Better than I expected - I can see why it is popular with the metal crowd. Thumbs up!
Not my kinda music, but still listenable
3,5/5
I really didn't like his voice. Music was ok
Not good. Not even a couple good riffs
Not my usual thing, but it’s pretty fun! Favourite track: Tornado of Souls
The perfect example of a boring ass metal album.
2.5 I gotta be real with you, I’ve heard of Megadeth, I know it’s Dave Mustaine, but I guess I’ve never really heard a song by them. I genuinely liked the instrumentation and compositions. A lot more variety than Metallica. The lyrics, also good. But hollllllyyyy shit. Mustaine’s vocals almost ruin the whole record. I don’t need my singers to actually be good singers (Dylan, Cohen, Springsteen), but their vocals have to feel “right” for the music. Guys…Mustaine sounds like Chuck E. Cheese when he sings. It’s bad. It’s maybe the most mismatched vocals I’ve ever heard for a band. It’s so annoying, so distracting, it almost tanks the whole thing.
It sounds kinda cool but I don't pay attention to the lyrics... Great guitar solos.
With all the good heavy metal out there, almost none of which made this list, we get Megadeth? Famous album cover and popular at the time but do you hear any of these songs anywhere but maybe the death metal station on Sirius? No. They're just a second rate Metallica, same DNA, but with weaker vocals. Interchangeable. I blame them, and Metallica, for the slew of copycat bands that flooded the genre after 1990 and introduced some really shitty stuff that we're still enduring today. It sounds mechanical and thin to me. They try and have the guitar sound of Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, but they lack the groove to accomplish it with the same prowess. Speed for speed's sake is all I hear. I didn't enjoy a single song. "Symphony of Destruction" from their next album is their signature song and the only one I ever liked. "Tornado Of Souls" has 40M listens on Spotify, it's so not-good. 2 stars. I just don't get them
Musically this was a fine thrash metal album, fun if a bit tiring after a few tunes, but the decision to use a recording of cats having unsatisfying sex instead of a vocal track really didn't work.
It's like Metallica, but less interesting than Metallica... 🙈
Not my cup of tea, which should surprise no one
I know it takes a lot of talent to play this way, but I just don’t like this kind of music. It was okay until they opened their mouths to ‘sing.’
One decent song, everything else was laughable
p642. 1990. 2 stars. It's Spinal Tap, isn't it? Comedy thrash metal. Unfortunately the joke wears thin after two tracks. Bonus point for some decent riffs and fancy guitar work.
I didn't particularly like Megadeth as a kid and apparently I don't like it now either. I can appreciate the musicianship but song material isn't that strong. Not to mention that Dave Mustaine is an annoying and self-centered whiner.
Metal is not for me. I didn't enjoy anything about this.
would have loved this in my younger years, but I have mellowed out some in my old age. Still think it was super influential though.
Genuinely how are people so in love with this kind of music. Im not being facetious i just don’t understand. It’s a few steps away from pure noise. No complexity, just slight variations on the same fucking riff on some power chords ive heard all my life against some half paked political critique. I have heard enough metal for a lifetime, if you can’t impress me at this point i will just never get it and i am fine with that.
Metal is not my favorite. But this was not as harsh as some metal. 2.5
These guys play their instruments as if it's a competitive sport. Not to make them sound enjoyable
Silly and fun 2.5
Totally not my thing. I prefer Metallica.
Good, not great Fine Easy enough to listen to Would i listen again? Dunno
I liked metal, but I think Megadeath have always been a crap copy of Metallica.
It’s actually okay just not something I’d ever listen to
the guitar is wild, it's a snake, it's out of control.
genre-defining, not my vibe though, loved it when i was 14
Metal like this is kind of fun, but there's not much more to it than that. I don't think that I would ever listen to this album again on my own, but I would enjoy it if it played over a cool action scene or something. Favorite track: "Lucretia"
Sounds close to the kind of repetitive noise rock that I would usually love, but sounds even closer to the repetitive metall that I tend to find boring.
Rust in pieces, this is my last Megadeth listen.
two stars cause some of riffs rip but its all too ridiculous i couldnt get past the gang vocals on take no prisoners….
A rather ridiculous album! It's not exactly subtle. And it gets pretty boring quite soon.
I don’t have a dog in the Metallica vs Dave Mustaine fight, it’s a shame we live in the timeline where they had to part ways and we ended up with both Metallica and Megadeth on our radios. If you put a gun to my head (I know, 2nd time this week!) and made me pick one, I might just let you shoot me. This record is definitely more 80’s Thrash than what Metallica was doing by 1990. There’s a lot of fiddly guitar work that hasn’t aged very well, and I get some prog-rock influences that I wasn’t really expecting (that part might be worth exploring if I were even vaguely interested in anything else here). Overall, a pretty abrasive way to start my morning.
Som metallica fast utan charmen..
Technically proficient, sounded like muppets sometimes. Generally failed to capture my attention.
…..
Album #86 Megadeth: Rust in Peace Everything that I know about Megadeth just makes them seem like cornballs, to the incredibly tacky album art (though I find most metal album covers to be this way), the incredibly tacky title, and the incredibly tacky way that Dave Mustaine conducts himself. I’m not very knowledgeable about metal, but even I am aware that this guy can’t stop talking about Metallica, though I will say I find it kind of endearing that he’s willing to hold a grudge for that long. In a way, since I’m not a Metallica fan, I always passively rooted for Megadeth when watching those interviews because I assumed Mustaine was like the Pete Best of metal, and I felt bad for him. But it turns out that, apparently, they are a very respectable band themselves. I never knew just how big they were. As for the music, I found it to be solid, but with much thrash metal, something about it doesn’t stick with me. I think it may be the repetitive distorted guitar sequences, they just don’t register in the part of my brain which tracks melodies, at least not in the same way that a Johnny Marr or a Mark Knopfler can. I think that will always be my barrier with metal; all of my favourite albums have incredibly catchy melodies and impactful lyrics, whereas metal has abrasive instrumentals that distract from the words. That said, I didn’t hate this album; I thought it was actually pretty good for what it is. Mustaine’s voice didn’t bother me at all, but I’ve heard that some find it unlistenable. Some pretty good songs and some respectable ideals presented in the lyrics, but I think this would take me quite a few listens before it started to finally stick with me. Best Tracks: Tornado of Souls, Hangar 18, Dawn Patrol Worst Track: Poison was the Cure Score out of 10: 5.5
not my kinda metal
Oeioeioei, beetje te heftig voor mij.
…the album isn’t really giving me what I want… vocals are nasally and whiny… and production is a little too clean… for a Thrash Metal band it sounds Hairspray throughout…
amphetamine fueled noise
The guitar work is great but I can't stand thrash metal.
Eh
Not a genre for me
Was decent. Strong 2.
5/10 This is not exactly a bad album. Strong music (heavy guitars, overwhelming bass and drums), varied vocals, sort of lame lyrics but whatever. It's just not my kind of music. I was bored the whole way through. How do I rate something like this?
Really not the worst album - wouldn't have personally picked it in 100 years but it wasn't terrible.
Really not my style of music
I was ready to hate this, but it wasn’t that bad. The lyrics and their delivery are silly, but sometimes the guitars were cool. It would suck to be in a metal band and have to write metal songs all the time. I’d like to give this 2.5 stars but I can’t.
I just can’t with this album it’s not terrible
Emo middle schooler vibes. No thank you!
Not my typical style, but I appreciate the energy and like the drum and bass throughout. I actually ended up liking the demo tracks toward the end of the version I listened to the best. “Take no prisoners, take no shit” indeed.
Much the same as the other Megadeth album on here; on the bearable end of the spectrum, but not something I would normally choose to listen to. Technically proficient guitar playing. High two, close to three.
In spite of how incredibly technical and fast this album is, I didn't care about it. If I'm being honest, my face when I saw this recommendation was of pure disgust, due to me not being a fan of thrash metal and that I knew about the popular opinion that Dave Mustaine's voice is considered to be rather annoying. Turns out it is more tolerable than I expected, but not good enough for me to like it. For the rest of the album, as I stated, I feel very indifferent. I'll give it points for being impressively technical, but I wasn't really digging the riffs, and I never liked thrash metal solos, and if this album stands out for something is for being a riffs and solos powerhouse. I do understand why this album is seeing as a masterpiece, but it is not for my liking.
There's just something about how old thrash sounds that I really struggle with sometimes. The drums are all mixed for speed instead of impact and nothing else provides that. Dawn Patrol was interesting but then the snare comes in and sounds like a coughing baby, oh well.
Certainly a head banger, but not for me. Wouldn’t listen again.
LoveDeep Purple and early Sabbath, but can't get into this.
not my cup of tea
I sort of enjoyed this until my ears started bleeding.
niet voor de vroege morgen
I was a metalhead in the 80s and early 90s when this was around and my first show was actually Megadeth. Listening to these albums again reminds me why we're still listening to Alternative and Grunge in 2026 vs metal cause it hasn't aged well and really all kinda sounds the same.
One trick pony and after the first couple of tunes, nothing new.
