Reviews (page 8 of 8)
I wanted to give this album another chance because it's allegedly very influential on my favorite acts. Somebody is lying to me, man. This shit is awful and barely registers as music to me at all
big oof. is this just over my head? its kinda cool to hear 70's electronica but it sounds like music you'd hear traveling through a wormhole and you're beyond terrified. I birst out laughing at some of the noises and screeches but thankfully I wasnt wearimg headphones.
What the fuck is this shit?
“Ooooh look at us! We’re really provocative. Look at our naaame!!! Hear the track where we basically scream for 3 minutes. Ooooh what will we do neeext?!?!?” It’s a shame. There is something interesting there. Sitting in that Joy Division crossroads of punk and electronic. But mostly it’s unlistenable tripe.
"was universally panned in the United States, where it failed to chart" ... yeah, no kidding. It's terrible!
very few times have i encountered an album that is mostly good, but the part that is bad is so bad that it ruins the entire thing
Only so long I can listen to a man making sex noises whilst talking about murder
The first album generated that I truly didn't vibe with. Slightly innovative melodic structures, but a truly annoying mix of rock/electronica (similar to ZZ Top's Eliminator 5 years later).
🗿
Suicide by Suicide. Poetic, in a way. I felt half of my brain cells committing it, and the other half longing for it. Musical equivalent of scratching a mosquito bite bloody. It hurts. You don't want it. It does not stop. You feel worse than before. Please don't get me wrong, this album has no artistic quality or novelty. It just sounds bad and boring.
This just doesn't sound like an album of music intended for people to listen to, but rather a sort of a journal in the form of art reflecting the world seen through the eyes of the artist, their feelings and ideas. Which is a pretty cool thing to do, but again, it does not produce actual music anyone would want to hear.
70’s not
This honestly sounded like the preset buttons on a casio
bas album za samoubojstvo
Pretty boring. No drums. Uses gore and shock as its source of interest which is pretty cheap and easy. I suppose no one else really sounded like that at the time, but that doesn’t mean it’s good.
This sucks. Girl was the song that totally ruined this album for me. The fucking horseshit screaming on Frankie Teardrop really got this friday off to a shit start.
They'd get better in the second album with songs like "Dream Baby Dream", but this... this ain't it. Basic, monotonous, beats straight from a Casio keyboard and the blown out screaming in "Frankie Teardrops" is enough to plunge this into the depths for me.
This album was terrible
Terrible weekend of music for me. I think this is my first one star. Unlistenable.
Just awful. Hate everything about it.
just an absolute waste of time
This was an album with good loops that didn't develop into anything and had questionable at best vocals on top. Honestly Frankie Teardrop wasn't as bad as I was expecting from the other reviews, it was long, but it was mostly the same as the other songs with a few screams added, not a positive, but not quite the unlistenable wtf material other people described it as. I will say this is an album that if I heard someone put it on I'd probably request a skip, and question their taste.
Bleh
There’s not any situation in life I would or could ever find myself or being able to recommend to someone to listen to. Why this is on a list saying it’s a MUST, makes this list pretty much null and void. If I started with album I would have never even kept on going.
Umm well this certainly was shit. It is a 30 minute album. One song is over 10 minutes which was very difficult to hear and was pointless. Stay away.
Nah I’m good
don't never make me listen to moaning and screaming layered over thinly veiled beats ever again this shit was shit
Nostalgia train, otherwise I don't see the appeal.
Suicide is crap. Can't use electronica and synth to create driving anticipation in several tracks without ever kicking into another gear, there's no tempo change, no variety in how loud or soft the sound gets, just ends up being marginally better than something any of us could knock up on a kid's play keyboard. Shit 'vocals' too.
Yuk
Yesterday I got Peter Tosh. My review was, it's too repetitive. Now this... Some kind of proto house music or something. I think I understand why it's on the list, because it has a weird atmosphere unlike anything else I know. Doesn't mean I like it.
Fitting name, boring ah album
Ghost Rider - 2 Rocket USA - 1.5 Cheree - 1 Johnny - 2.5 Girl - 1.5 Frankie Teardrop - 1.5 Che - 2 Average - 1.71
Dog shit. Worst album on the list 0/10
Feels like it’s just constantly building up but no beat drop or changeup. Blue balling tf outa me. Sounds like something I could make in garage band in less then 30 min. Frankie teardrop is fucking wild 😭. The hardest listen of my life.
Just not good
At first, I thought It would be a cool ambient vibe but no; just no. I don't know why it's on this list tbh. I powered through but god, 'Frankie Teardrop ' was absolutely awful. This is not for me.
ok
Sounds like a teenager in his bedroom with a Casio keyboard
After listening to this, I nearly did…
I don't think this is the worst album I have heard on here, but it's a contender! Seriously WTF?
There's a fine line between music and sound. Not sure which side this album is on...
Ok, I acknowledge that it sounds quite timeless and obviously was something very different in 1977. But, seriously, this is more sounds with feverish barking and wailing on top of it, than it is music, and it is definitely not for me.
This sounds like bad karaoke.
Note even music some times
Thanks, I hate it.
Scary and weird 0 stars
The album reminds me a bit of Massive Attack. But worse.
Fuckin noise
You know the theme song from M*A*S*H, 'Suicide is Painless'? Whoever wrote that clearly never listened to this album.
Just very early arthouse style spoken work with electronic beats behind it. Felt depressing throughout most of it.
Let's NOT hear it for Frankie
How can anyone enjoy this? It is mostly static and noise, with no clear structure.
No...just no. 1/5
Mikið hrikalega rosalega var ég feginn þegar plötunni lauk. Mér var í alvörunni orðið illt í eyrunum. Öskur og leiðindi og sami taktur og viðbjóður. Ég mun aldrei vilja hlusta á þetta aftur.
Hard to listen to… so depressing. The X-ray notes said they were ‘confrontational performers’. And I can understand they must have been to be able to create this kind of sound without ending it all immediately afterward.
Somebody talking under their breath for 30 min. No thanks.
Well that was some weird ass shit. Technically speaking, it was like listening to the Doors but not really. Too electronic for me.
Hard no. Sounds like a guy in his parent’s basement messing around with a synthesizer. Plus the name.
Terrible, F. The only thing I liked about this album was when it ended.
Repetitive hard rock licks, combined with a few other instruments and vocals to provide variation. Not sure why this was included.
1 - This is what it sounds like when you let people high on heroin loose with recording equipment. In all seriousness though, I found it pretty horrible to listen too and I felt the emotions that they intended the audience to feel. The screaming was too much and a bit over the top.
Dafuq. Too weird and kooky for me. The amount I enjoy moaning and screaming in real life is the amount I enjoyed this album. Deliberately stressful and I'm not into it. It was hard not to vote it 1/5 before finishing listening, but in the spirit of being open minded, I finished the album before reviewing (but still gave it a one). If you could vote it 0, I would.
Francie Teardrop reminded me of the clip where Nasser Hussain put a chair down on David Gower's foot. Other than that I took nothing from this.
Nope. Nope. Nope.
I didn’t like this. What the hell was with the guy moaning his orgasm got an entire song. Doubt I’d revisit this as it really wasn’t for me.
Worst album of the list so far.
Unimaginative and repetitive
I liked the heavy handedness!
This was very disappointing. The same beat every time every song. Sounded fun at first the. just repepatitve
Odd 1/5
unlistenable
Hated it. Hated it. Hated it.
Not a fan of this one
#72. Well that certainly was uhhhh... something, now wasn't it? Like, you know, not something good, but something. 1/5: stop Song added to playlist: Ghost Rider I've created a playlist on Spotify that consists of the best and/or my favorite song from each of the albums in this book. This list can be found here if you are interested: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7MAXDGLWlwLkFLb8veGfkA?si=FqkQQPgZTFWG0jAUJXLFZA&utm_source=copy-link
Awful. Would never listen to this again
This shit sucks donkey dick
Not for me
A rather unfortunate choice of a name, followed by quite annoying music.
Tämä oli kyllä kamala. Rääkymistä ja huminaa. En ymmärrä.
Weird little noises: the album Hot garbage 0/5
Known before: Standouts: Rating: -1.5
Known Before: No Standouts: No 1.0
A great way to be put on a list 1/5
not even worth listening to
I had to go back and forth debating whether I wanted to rank this album according to how groundbreaking it is (I usually give a star just for that even on albums I dislike), or according to how listenable it is. I went with the latter because I never want to listen to this album again. First one on this list I've given a 1 star rating.
This album was pretty bland, then got tremendously grating toward the end. I understand that music is a medium to tell a story, and that everyone has a story to tell, but some of the stories from this album are better left out of published music. The thought of a band exploiting the topic of suicide and employing amoral shock tactics for commercial gain is abhorrent. I see little to no value in this “music” ; one star.
This album was kindof boring. The backing track is the same 30 seconds on a loop. Also the song Girl was kind of disturbing, im not sure how anyone feels good listening to that. 1 star
Don't listen to this one, ever again.
This is what happens when white people are left to their own devices and try to come up with music
Nope. Sorry.
WOW that was garbage, mind numbingly boring. How on earth did someone put on a vinyl of this in the late 70s and think "This is what I'm going to spend my time listening to". 1/10, if it wasn't for Cheree sound ok for 30 seconds or so it would be a 0
Random noise and talking. Hated. 0/5
Started out better than I was expecting, but got progressively worse........."Girl" made me highly uncomfortable.
I didn't enjoy the album, didn't enjoy the style and especially didn't like the screaming near the end of the album.
Not a fan of this one.
I take a fat shit on this album every morning.
Not an ounce of talent went into this one
I guess this is on here because it influenced GOOD bands? I sure didn't like it. I skipped the last 2/3 of "Frankie Teardrop" because the singer decided it was a good idea to just scream into the mic for no good reason. Sorry to anybody out there listening with earbuds. I made it about halfway through the final track before just quitting. It wasn't worse than Frankie Teardrop, but it wasn't any better. Except there was no screaming. It's appropriate that the cover has one star on it. Because that's what I'm giving it. I'd give it 0 if I could.
It's definitely ahead of its time but those droning synths are torture to listen to.
I give this 1 star because it is technically music. But ungodly bad.
Didn't like it at all. 1/5 -S
So bad…
too weird/boring for me
Spoken verse, strange mix, tons of delay and synth-organ. Not something I like.
Should have spent their sunglasses money on a fucking drum machine. How did this stuff get people to riot at live shows?
ugh so boring and the vocals suck and the basslines are so repetitive and everything is just so repetitive and butt
This is by far the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Captain Beefheart seems like The Beatles in comparison. Seriously. Go awful. I had cringe-induced goosebumps the entire time I listened. When he starts screaming in Johnny Teardrop I feared for my life. How anybody decided this is “art” is beyond me. There’s no musicality to this. It’s a Casio on loop with a shit tambourine sample. The guy talks about a man killing his family in Johnny Teardrop or just outright has an orgasm into the mic on Girl.
The orgasmic moaning in “Girl” made me even more uncomfortable than the droaning synth on every track. Ugh.
AAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! My poor ears!
Boriiinn´
This band caught me off guard not only with their name, but also with the music. Really haunting, depressing, scary at times. Can’t say I really dig it, it’s too much out there, and ahh maybe too much drug fuelled? Anyway, some might really love it. 2 out of 10
I feel like all of the accolades of this album are gaslighting me. It is beyond boring musically, and it's pretty stunning to think that any of the electronic sounds were ever considered innovative. Everything just feels basic as hell.
I was listening to this record via speakers at home, but decided to switch to headphones halfway through the second song because I didn't want to subject the other people in my house to this music. Turns out I was right to do that, because this is an awful album. Apparently it was recorded over four days, and I wish someone had recommended the band to take maybe four more years to mull over whether this was worth releasing or not. It sounds like someone repeatedly drilling into my skull, with an ocassional scream that really pisses me off, to be honest. I will be very happy to never think about this record ever again. To those who love this, more power to you guys! But this album SUCKS
Weird, enerverende
1/5 Best: Ghost Rider Worst: Frankie Teardrop
Not my kind of music
Iconic? Maybe. Good? Fuck no. This album sucked.
Hmm no
Ooo this reminded me that I was familiar with the lovely "Frankie Teardrop" - I hadn't heard that once since my wedding reception... This is what happened when you left Tommy the little delinquent punk at home for the weekend in the late 70s with nothing but Oreos and coke and his new cheap little Radio Shack gadgets. Seriously: as low an "effort" as I've ever heard - not just on the 1001 - ever. Straight up in the running for worst album ever released. 0/10 0 stars (i wish).
I was intrigued in the beginning but it all became repetitive noise soon after. And that moaning in "girl". Ew
Experimental.
Barf
Nei, nei og atter nei
I've been trying to listen to each album 2x though when time permits. I would like to listen to this album negative 2x through. Is that possible?
This album was so boring. The same repetitive shaky-egg sound in the background with little else going on and "Girl" was one of the most uncomfortable songs I've had the displeasure of listening to.
You only need to listen to 20 seconds of a song at that gives you the sound for the entire song. Waste of time to listen to. It doesn't belong on this list at all.
Vocally this album is terrible, why was there moaning in this? The instrumentals were incredibly repetitive and they weren’t that great to begin with.
This shit sounds so stupid, it's hilarious. All the songs seem like they could lead up to something, but stay repetitive and fade away. In one song I think he's literally just jerking off into the mic. The next is a 10 minute song about a guy killing his family and himself then going to hell with accompanying sound effects. It was a riot.
No thanks
I liked the first two songs a little but then it just dropped from there, it’s unique but not great sadly a 1/5
Man, I just wrote what a contrast between Missy and Metallica, then we get these guys. Holy shit...... First song, I thought different but may be OK. Then every song got progressively worse and disturbing. By the time I got to Girl I was close to tapping out. Definitely should have tapped out. What in the hell was Frankie? Just brutal. I don't even know what to say about this album. Not for me. I let the genre play while typing. 2nd song played was Cindy by The Jesus and Mary chain, then Loose by the Stooges. I'm offended Spotify grouped these songs/groups with the album. Another 1 because you can't rate negative. Will not attempt to listen to anything by these guys. Feel a little emotionally disturbed for listening.
1 Wtf even was this? It’s good to know that I could make an album of absolute fucking nonsense and it could be considered an all time great. I was already annoyed and then there was a 9 minute song and then I was pissed. Fuck this.
1 I feel like I was violated listening to this thing. Being that it was released in 1977, you could argue that it was ahead of its time, but my takeaway was that there was clearly still a ways to go in electronic music. I mean, the keyboard on Ghost Rider was so harsh that I thought I was about to be impaled by the audio waves. Johnny was kind of funny to me at least because all I could think of was the opening to the Peanuts theme - kept waiting for Schroeder to jump in with the high part. Unfortunately, my mood quickly shifted when I became very, very uncomfortable right afterwards with Girl. And then don’t even get me started on Frankie Teardrop. It was clear about a minute in that the next nine were about to be very long and… and then… then the screaming started 0_0 One day I’m going to wake up with a cold sweat in the middle of the night thinking about this song. Supposedly this is supposed to be a take on punk, and I guess I can hear that in its rawness, but I feel like punk is supposed to stand for something, and I don’t think this stands for anything. Call it experimental if you want, it doesn’t make it listenable.
It has become apparent why the album is called suicide. This album is a waste of time. Pick a beat and put some weird echo like reverb on your microphone and just say random fucking words. Not sure if that is what synth pop is in general but man I never want to listen to that again...I award this album no stars and may God have mercy on Frankie Teardrop's soul
What did I just listen to?? When Girl was on I took my headphones off at least 5 times to make sure it wasn't playing out loud while I was in my office Would not recommend doing drugs and listening to this album
An unpleasant listening experience. This is the kind of music I would play to someone if I was torturing them. I guess some people could see this as art, and at least it's different. I couldn't tell that this was made in 1977, it could have just as easily been made today.
Repetitive boring melody, boring lyrics and then to make it slightly less boring: the dude screams a bit.
I feel like I clicked on the wrong album. What an awful time. An awful record.
I don’t get it. Sounded like amateur ramblings.
If I could rate this 0, I would. 1/5.
This is the worst album I’ve ever heard
This dude got a Casio keyboard for Christmas one year and made the same song over and over.
not my jam
not my cup of tea. at all
Deeply unsettling. Murdering your wife and baby coz life is tough?!?! And then "let's hear it for Frankie" nah.
Just no. Why dies it have to have this super annoying white noise on almost every Track?
wtf was this
Absolutely shit
This album is beautifully titled, as it encapsulates the fact that it makes me want to commit suicide
I mean I guess I can see how this would've been groundbreaking for the time, but I kind of really didn't like it. The instrumentals are fine but the vocals threw me off. Was losing my mind at "Girl" and "Frankie Teardrop", and not in a good way. No fave track.
Very very odd, not always in a good way. Not terrible, far from great, but really strange. Not for me thanks. Still miles better than Nico though!
First song, eh, not bad. Then the drum beat continued, then a man screamed at me, then I understood why this has so many 1 reviews
This record sounds like Lou Reed both literally and figuratively jerking off in a bathroom with a tape recorder and Casio keyboard.
I wanted to like this but I just couldn't. A boring, self indulgent pile of wank. Crappy repetitive beats and uninspired lyrics that sound like they being made up as they go along. Never again.
What a pile of shite
What is this edgy Elvis / Joy Division shit? 1/3 of this album is that 10mins teardrop track… Here’s Frankie by Sister Sledge: https://youtu.be/1Tl-c_puzbM
Best Song: Ghost Rider. The backing groove is kinda nice. Worst Songs: Girl. Mother of God who the fuck wants to listen to this horny, desperate mumbling? Also Frankie Teardrop, for being one of the least musical songs I've ever heard. Overall: What at first seemed like some marginally interesting groove tracks descended into absolute hell due to the vocals layered overtop. The absolutely non-musical screaming, blowing out the mic? Insane, paranoid "lyrics"? If you played this song to an enemy combatant it would count as a war crime. I read they declined to play this at Abu Ghraib, citing it as too cruel.
not my thing
Cute on a cerebral level, but does absolutely nothing for me in the enjoyment department. 1/5
I don't know what to say. This was more background noise than a nice album to listen to. Didn't feel that Electronic to me. Did I hate it, no. Did I like it, no.
Sorry to all the other albums I have given a 1, this is the newest low.
s h it
this album is forgettably bad and i don't get why it's in this collection
Every single song has some in incessant hissing noise, which continues throughout the entire album. It MIGHT get 2 stars if it didn't have that annoying sound, but alas, I really hate it.
no never again
This whole album sounds like the beginning of an acid trip going bad. I listen to some weird stuff, but this…this was out there. Loved the 4 minutes of him just saying “oh girl” and moaning over the same 2 chords. Frankie Teardrop was unnecessarily unsettling…but let’s hear it for Frankie James if you read reviews, these are the most moonsounds like lyrics I’ve heard.
This was horrible
This was very innovative for 1977. And I can certainly see how this would have influenced many different genres going into the 80's. But innovative and influential doesn't mean, in and of itself, that it's any good.
OMG, No.
All songs looks the same, really boring band
For the first 10 seconds of Ghost Rider, I thought maybe this could be a decent album. Nope. Monotonous and boring, the tracks are basically spoken tracks over repetitive sound effects. Of the total 32 minutes for the album, over 10 minutes are dedicated to Frankie Teardrop. I couldn’t help but laugh at how stupid the song was. “Oh Frankie Frankie…oh Frankie Frankie!” … 2 min of repetitive whirring sounds… scream into the mic.
For my listening pleasure, the computer says “Nope!”
Maybe I was not in the right mood for this, but this was pretty awful. I started writing this before I got to Frankie's Teardrop and then Wow. I can understand how this is influential to a lot of things I do like, but this was still terrible. Songs to Add to Library None
Rasping, discordant and brutal so a very limited outlet.
Nope, not for me
Afschuwelijk!
Alt 70s rock Girl was mad funny
Didn't enjoy this at all.
hahaha ok this was terrible. Most of it sounded like a CD skipping while someone mumbled over the top.... until he started yelling over the top instead. 1/5.
Opening riff sounded really promising, hard-driving beat with lots of heavy distortion. Unfortunately that doesn't set the correct tone for what's to come, you're going to get some weird goth/artsy singing with proto-industrial electronic beats in the background. Was prepared to give this a 2 after the first couple of songs, not my thing but I liked the beats and for being ahead of it's time. Then "Girl" and "Frankie Teardrop" happened. Utter garbage, making weird orgasm noises and then the next song just saying "this guy killed a baby and his wife" then screaming for 7 minutes. Waste of time, if you're reading reviews before starting just skip this one, it's that bad.
Aptly named.
Terrible crap
Punk-rock electrónico. Ruido. No me ha gustado nada. Un 1.
Finally! An album and band whose name shares the same sentiment a listener feels after listening to it. How does stuff like this even crack the 1001 list? Horrible, basically just spoken word. 2/10
Aptly named
Shame you can’t give a 0 rating. Genuinely one of the worst things I’ve ever heard. The only list this should be on is 1001 awful rackets to subject terrorists to.
Shite
No, no, nope. Don't like it.
A bad bad album, with the worst song ever released. Frankie Teardrop can fuck off.
Dark, nobody wants to listen to this.
Reckon it is on here because it pursues an idea ahead of it's time. But it is doesn't compare to other electronics or what is about to emerge with Joy Division. It is the shortest album I have reviewed at 32 mins and this is already 7 mins too long with the shocking track that is Frankie. Lyrics exceptionally weak all round. Cover art 4/5
couldn't get through the whole thing
Hi- Rocket USA Lo- Girl, Frankie Teardrop Feels like the roots of bands like Joy Division and other industrial acts; I can hear a lot of influences in modern music...with dark and brooding late 70's synth and electric drums. It's hideously experimental; the vocalist doesn't really sing, but rather blurts (and sometimes screams) unstructured beat poetry, trying to tell some story. Girl is just repetitive and way too long for a song that doesn't really progress....but then you get to Frankie Teardrop...I don't really call this music but some kind of interpretive performance art. Most of the tracks on this album just meander and it's unpleasant to listen to.
There's a reason for the name... if you've never contemplated suicide, after hearing this...
Not a good album
3/10, dated, flat, uninspiring. May have been groundbreaking in '77, but sounds flat to '22 ears. Some good concepts, but not utilized well. this album may be a grower, but it's sure not a shower.
HUGE pass. Barely made it through the first song "GhostRider" without feeling like i'm dizzy due to the static instrumental.
Really weird album. Nothing noteworthy really about this. It felt like an emo album that tried to be edgy except it was from the 70s. Barely made it through the first time around. 1.9/10
Hat garbage.
No
No puedes simplemente poner loops y hablar por encima y llamarlo música. ¿o sí?
Had to skip most of this. I felt like I was wasting time listening to this even though it was while I was doing other things.
false
Wow, this just sounds really really bad. I can understand how it might have been very original at it's time and how it may have influenced a lot of later, better music. But this just sounds atrocious.
I kept waiting for this album to break open and it never did. I wanted to like it more than I did. I suppose if I was laying on my childhood bedroom floor listening to the album through headphones while dosing I would have connected with it. Soberly listening to it in my office, it was a bit repetitive and monotonous. Frankie is annoying. Good riddance.
This sucks
It's unlikely that I will be listening to this ever again, much less once a year.
meh
0.5 terrible
did not enjoy this album
Garbage. The name fits.
1977. Key Songs: Cheree
Worthless fucking garbage.
