Reviews (page 4 of 12)
Queen Dolly. Long may she reign. This album doesn't contain a lot of her well-known hits (at least not well-known to ME,) but it is fantastic nonetheless.
tragic and loving and beautiful
Absolutely not my genre at all. But. Parton is quite the storyteller and manages to hide quite some dark/tricky subjects in some pleasant country melodies. It's still not my genre, and I fear I won't be coming back to this that much, but that's not to take away any credit from what Parton achieved here.
I would give a 4.5 if I could. So Gouda I love
I liked itt
beautiful voice and wonderfully colorful stories from ma dolly
I love how great of a storyteller she is. Some of the songs bored me, but I enjoyed the more folksy ones.
Exactly what I expected from Dolly. Gorgeous jangly country. No notes.
Ive never truly listened to Dolly before, this was a great album that gave me a lot of perspective regarding her music. Overall an awesome listen
Holy cow this album is awesome! It’s Dolly. What more do we need to say?
Very fun album! I enjoyed this one a lot and I didn’t expect to love it so much.
At least a 4.
I fuck with this
This was a fun little record!
Classic
Dolly has issues with her mother, and has made me think of my own issues. Her voice is troubled and soft at the same time. Pretty good for country music.
The first song is truly beautiful an encapsulates perfectly what this album aims to do. That is to be truly human. From the love of our mothers making Dolly feel like the richest person on the planet even with little money. To the mysteries of life that we begin to ask as we get older. It's beautiful.
short and so sweet. Dolly's voice is so sincere, comfortable and adorable. Glad there's a country album out there I can like!
Hard to dislike
By golly it's Dolly. Half an hour is a perfect length for this before outstaying it's welcome
Amazing voice! Could listen to her voice forever.
Love this!
lovely
Love Dolly but the music's just not my taste. 4 stars because Dolly rules.
4/5
She is such a revered artist. I love everything about her. I appreciate all the songs on this album but I can't say it would be a go to listen.
I knew I’d enjoy this album, but it’s not terribly diverse. Dolly is not in my regular listening rotation but I always enjoy her when I hear her. The arrangements and mixing are so “vocal forward” that it makes it hard not to hear the message in each of her songs.
Good because Dolly is great but not the strongest album of hers in my opinion. Still fun to listen to.
Title track is such a great song. Definitely some other standouts. Enjoyed Traveling Man, Here I Am, and Early Morning Breeze. I will admit I cannot listen to Dolly for too long before the voice gets on my nerves a bit 😬
surprisingly rlly liked this. the lyrics are also good good good throughout but like idk what i expected. fav was the title track i THINK, bc it made me feel the most
I feel like I’ve never really appreciated Dolly Parton before, I really enjoyed this one
Love dolly parton! Love the folky way she does the songs in this album!
Dolly’s voice is beautiful, this was a nice listen! Travelling Man made me laugh with the plot twist as well. This felt really classic old school country/folk, and I enjoyed the sound, especially the vocal harmonies.
Fun listen. Dad woulda be into this one. Love the She Never Met a Man song - great contrast of pretty song with super salty lyrics, classic Dolly.
Not the biggest fan of this type of music. But I have the children's book. And I just love her as a person. And that almost gets it up to 5 stars... But again, I just don't like country music.
The Dolly Parton spell is in full effect here, where her storytelling and personable delivery supersedes the country grudge so many people hold blindly against the genre. “Traveling Man” is a borderline hilarious story, especially since it follows such a heartfelt opener. Meanwhile, “If I Lose My Mind” is heartbreaking completely and totally, which is especially impressive given it’s short 2:30 runtime. Parton oscillates between these endearing ballads and soul-crushing stories at will, leaning into her genre’s strengths with these to tropes for most of this short record, with “Early Morning Breeze” being a light exception to the rule towards the end of the track list. “Here I Am” provides a gentle nudge to the listener with a full bassline groove and drumbeat throughout - not that it’s needed on this short little album. A little humor, self-awareness, and a lot of heart nudges this one into light 4/5 territory for me. Outside of the title track, no song totally floored me, but all the same there isn’t a bad track to be found
Another album with a strong storytelling element, which I feel like I've gotten a lot of recently. I haven't listened to much Dolly, so this was a nice introduction. She does a good job of bringing you into the song and keeping you entertained on each track. Honestly, everything on it was pretty good. My only real knocks (heh) are that there isn't much diversity in style throughout and that it is a little downbeat/boring at times. I still liked it well enough, and the short length meant it didn't have time to get old. I'd listen to it again. Here I go, ranking another classic country album higher than I expected again. Overall: 3.75/5
Ah, Dolly Parton. A name I've heard ever so many times and such famous songs I know what she looks and sounds like without ever EVER seeking her out (Jolene is a straight banger though). I knew what I was getting into but I did enter with no actual expectations, no idea how much I would like it or anything like that, but I did. I did like it. A few notes, this album was 4 years after her debut... and is her 8th album? Good god, what a workhorse. The sound is, I suppose, nothing mind-blowing but if you just like the sound of a lovely voice and a guitar with minor support aside the occasional surprise forward bassline then I'd recommend giving this a listen top to bottom. It helps that the album is only 27 minutes long! I got to a point where I thought "yeah okay it's a little samey, how much longer do I have" and I only had 6 minutes of music to go. With a lot of albums I mention length, because despite this being my favourite medium I can't help but acknowledge that this is something I do daily so a two hour album that doesn't do anything particularly impressive will piss me off. This however was gone just as soon as it came. I was bobbing my head, tapping my foot and enjoying Dolly sing in a voice I've heard many times and still think is lovely, and then it ended, looped back into the first song and I thought "how could I ever complain about that". Despite being about as accessible as can be, is this actually country? If so it either feels very stripped back or toned down to be easily digestible for a mainstream audience otherwise I don't quite understand all the hate because this was pretty palatable. Is it just that it's repetitive or not deemed very intelligent or what, because pop has the same issues but is literally the short hand of "popular" so... Obviously at some point I am aware she transitioned over and did a sort of country pop blended sound that shot her to stardom but this is quite a few albums and years before that. I think this album is nice, I'd be harsher but it does have the song of the same name, Coat Of Many Colors is actually a wonderful little song that feels like a poem that makes me miss my mother even with no sort of "mutual" interaction of a patchwork coat. It just gives that feeling. That song alone raises this from a 3 to a 4. Best songs: Coat of Many Colors Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 22/26 (below Daydream Nation, above Come Away With Me)
only knew the hits before listening. really enjoyed the melodies and lyricism on this. love an album under 30 mins as well.
Album: Coat of Many Colors Artist: Dolly Parton Rating: 80.9/100 Verdict: A smooth, beautifully paced album that highlights Dolly's songwriting prowess, moving effortlessly from autobiographical classics to folk-inspired deviations, only stumbling slightly on the final pop attempt. Track-by-Track Analysis 1. Coat of Many Colors A perfect opener. The guitar work is fantastic, featuring smooth picking and a nice walking bass line that drives the song gently. As an autobiographical piece, it feels incredibly genuine and grounds the album immediately. 2. Traveling Man I love the opening bass line here. The sound shifts distinctly, feeling more like Southern Rock than standard country. It adds a nice grit to the early part of the record. 3. My Blue Tears The most striking element here is the high vocal pitch. It stands out distinctively from the previous tracks, showcasing a different part of her range. 4. If I Lose My Mind The pacing shifts down here, offering a nice transition from "My Blue Tears." It is a very easy-listening track that lets the album breathe. 5. The Mystery of the Mystery The tempo slows even further, but it works in the album's favor. The pacing so far has been excellent. The slow bass lines are a highlight, and Dolly’s voice is exceptionally smooth on this track. 6. She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like) The title alone is delightfully bold—it brings a certain attitude before the song even starts. I found myself really invested in the lyrics and the story being told. It makes you wonder who hurt her to write this; it has that same dramatic DNA as "Jolene." 7. Early Morning Breeze Honestly, this is a pleasant and surprising genre shift. It sounds very much like Linda Ronstadt or Joan Baez—very folk, very "wow." The songwriting feels heavily "Bob Dylan coded," stepping away from the polished country sound into something more raw and atmospheric. 8. The Way I See You The title strikes you first. Musically, I wasn't impressed initially, but the lyrics are lovely. The saving grace comes around the 1:45 mark where the piano adds a beautiful layer that elevates the whole track. 9. Here I Am Great lyrics and a standout performance. This track is all about Dolly's powerful vocals, which take center stage and demand attention. 10. A Better Place to Live This feels like Dolly’s attempt at a pop hit, but it doesn't quite land. Compared to the rich storytelling and musicality earlier in the album, this feels somewhat empty.
Dolly....I have to apologize. I was not familiar with your game. Growing up in the 80s, Dolly was a bit of a joke. She had giant....tracks of land. That's all I knew about her, since my dad was a rock guy and my mom liked Christian music. I would never have listened to her still, 40 years later, if it wasn't for this project. The title track is GREAT. "Traveling Man" is super fun. And then song after song it just keeps going, and....what is there not to like here? Her voice is tremulous and vulnerable, but strong when it needs to be. Her songs are straightforward C&W, but they're just really nice to listen to. Am I going crazy? I really like this! What is happening. FOUR STARS
Short and sweet and bitter and iconic
Love the title track
These days, it sounds little bit twee to my ears, some of the songs, like the title, positively saccharin. That said, it was clearly an important step in the development of one of most influential country singers.
Exactly what you'd expect from a Country Pop album of 1971. Great songwriting, performance and production. Standout tracks for me are the title track and the finale "A Better Place to Live".
Dolly is just a sweetheart. I don't like much country but she fits in well with Willie.
Favorite tracks: Coat of Many Colors, Early Morning Breeze, A Better Place to Live Very pleasantly surprised by this album! I've never really taken the time to listen to Dolly as I'm not a big country fan, but I actually did enjoy listening to this. I've found that storytelling and vulnerability go a lot way for me, regardless of genre. I would gladly listen to more Dolly!
Another good Sunday morning album. Dolly's such a treasure. 3.5
Really fun. I could listen this all day.
Dolly is the queen of it all. I loved this record so much she is such a good writer and it sounded so good. 4.5
I love how she blended so much storytelling into this album! i felt like i really knew her and her story
She’s pretty dope but wouldn’t really listen again
I never really listened to Dolly, I'm glad this was on the list because it was really good and showcased her amazing talent. She's not just an amazing person, but a great musician as well.
Hadn't listened to the whole album before, but none of the less known songs stood out. Always good to spend time with Dolly.
Dolly has BEEN that girl. Very fun album and I enjoyed the listen.
Honestly really good. Great vocals, great music, elicits emotions, doesn't overstay its welcome. Short sweet strong country. "Early Morning Breeze" and "I'm Here" stood out in particular to me. Queen shit.
A great smooth country album
Country music at it's finest. Hard to hate on Dolly, as she makes some great music.
Nice.
This is one of those rare albums that seems to tell a full story from first track to last, one that is deeply relatable to those who grew up the same way the character in the story did. Presumably, Dolly herself is the character, which would make sense, considering it conveys all the pain and joy of those moments through her cadence perfectly. While it's got the distinctive country twang to it's guitar pieces, the bass on some tracks like Early Morning Breeze have real character and I wonder if "Country Bass" is actually a thing. Perhaps it's more to do with the musical composition and not the lyrics, but the album brims with optimism on every track. It makes me think almost exclusively of that typical American Deep South visuals of small houses and big porches, stretches of dry dusty fields mixed with sand and the simple living people that reside there. "Here I am" easily my most favourite song on the album. It makes me think of my love, Sophie x
A wonderful little album full of sweet, simple songs. Dolly will forever be the queen of country. Best song: Coat of Many Colors
I am familiar with this album. Coat of Many Colors is a beautiful song both in song and in verse. Traveling Man is a real rocker even if its premise is a bit strange. My Blue Tears is…well enough out of me. Just listen to this woman’s voice and know you are alive in a time where you can be blessed by the voice of an angel. One helluva song writer too, with 7 out of 10 of these tracks being Parton originals. I do enjoy Wagoner’s writing style, but I wish he kept his hand out of this one. No way will I take a star away because of Wagoner’s influence though, if anything I’d add another for Dolly persevering and eventually escaping it.
Dolly! I really enjoyed this one. For me, Dolly is at her best when she’s showcasing her down-to-earth, working class background, and it shines through in many places here, including the title track. The closer is the perfect finisher too, dreaming of a better world. I hope Dolly’s dream comes true one day.
Incredibly sweet story telling and somehow timeless
Fab album by a fab singer. Maybe a touch too “country” for my taste but some absolutely brill songs and I would 100% listen again.
Love Dolly! Album was a little slow.
Is great for a Pride Parade!
Dolly Parton is a treasure. Beautiful voice, great music, the whole album is just a treat to hear. Coat Of Many Colors was such a sweet story. Traveling Man was really funny, especially the ending. My Blue Tears, The Mystery Of The Mystery, and The Way I See You are really sweet and smooth. Here I Am has really nice guitar music. And it ends on the good fun A Better Place To Live. Fun album, love you Dolly! Best song: Traveling Man
Surprisingly well done for classic country
Dolly gets 4 starts simply by being unapologeticly herself and always looking like she is having a great time. That woman has a laugh and a wake
good stuff ms parton, was a pleasure listening
I LOVE YOU DOLLY favorite track: Coat of Many Colours
A sweet, funny, warm-hearted LP with some lovely tunes - a breath of country fresh air. The world should be more Dolly.
This is what country should still be. What the hell happened to this genre? A bit samey sometimes but still fantastic writing and reminds me of the way Cash tells stories. Her voice is also awesome because she’s well.. you know DOLLY PARTON
She’s the most iconic country artist of all time and has well earned that title. Beautiful writing, vocals, and arrangements on this one.
fun!!! love her
Beautifully sung and cheery
Can't not love Dolly!
Side 1 was a bit tooo ‘country’ for me. Enjoyed side 2 though. Great voice!
Great album that is just plain wayyyy too short. Could have liatened to this for way longer. A mixed bag of straight up masterpieces and just good songs. 7/10
first dolly parton album, she is impressive
Not my jam but she is an incredible songwriter and vocalist. I did enjoy some of the songs. Sorta.
Wow, early Dolly keeping it real. Alternating back and forth between wholesome songs like Coat of Many Colors and eye-popping topics like Traveling Man. And yet it all hangs together. Nicely done!
Country vibes. Good music to have in the background while working.
Solid 7/10, good country ish album
Even of i dont particularly enjoy country music, this one had a lot of highlights for me,especially in the second leg. Very good album - 3.5 - added to collection
Good sound, not too long, good performance. Nice one, Dolly!
fucking delightful!!
Excellent album, legendary title track... very strong 4
always nice
This was much better than I expected.
7/10
Got a little repetitive but I love her so who cares
My wife was just as Dollywood a few days ago. Started a fascinating discussion about what is real and what is myth. Her persona is becoming more Dylan-esque to me over time. But more importantly, these are some of the few songs that were playing on my childhood home.
Stark but beautiful.
Dolly's melancholic mosaic of love, loss, and Tennessee living transports you to simpler times tinged with both heartache and hope.
Dolly living up to the hype. All around very good album. For me Early Morning Breeze was the clear standout from this album.
Take me to Dollywood.
Great story telling! Felt genuine. Was very impressed overall and would definitely spin again
Traveling Man is an all time bop. I apologize Dolly, I was not familiar with your game. Good shet.
Very sweet, very personal lyrics. Twang not overwhelming. Vocals heavy on vibratto, but that's part of her signature style, isn't it? Another exception to my general dislike of country.
I believe it's illegal to dislike Dolly Parton—and why would you anyway? Like her, this is so charming, but that's not all it is. She has the pipes, and this all comes from a real place. She's a national treasure for a reason.
Endelig Dolly! Dersom listen hadde vært 10 album måtte Dolly fortsatt vært med.
It's Dolly. Who doesn't love Dolly?
Partonit on vaan hyviä levyjä. Laulaa kuin enkeli.
Listened and realised I knew more DO songs than I thought I did! Some quite sad.
Love dolly
Dolly Parton is a national treasure.
I suspect many will rate this album low, but I rather enjoyed it. A throw back to a simpler time, when country music was still really country music, and life slower. Enjoyable trip down memory lane.
Nice
great album
Coat of Many Colors is heartfelt and deeply personal, blending simple country arrangements with vivid storytelling. The title track stands as one of her finest songs, radiating warmth and resilience. Though not every song reaches the same emotional peak, the album’s sincerity and charm make it a country classic.
An unexpected pleasure.
incredible
Dolly can do no wrong
# Playlist Track - Coat of Many Colors # Notes - Not a huge fan of country music, but Dolly Parton is amazing. - Also, +1 star for an album under 30 minutes with zero bad tracks. I do respect the care and restraint.
Classic
Favorite Track: Traveling Man
Amazing! The storytelling in each song is just so awesome! She looks like Ellen Degeneres on the cover! Ellen sure wishes she could be Dolly!
Holds together as a piece - wistful but somehow uplifting. Special mention for Early Morning Breeze.
Good ol' country. Short
You spend so much time hating on modern country that you blind yourself to the entire genre, then Dolly comes in over a slide guitar and all your convictions melt away.
What an angelic voice. Nothing crazy going on with any of the arrangements but the voice is enough! undisputed queen of country
Good clean living. She doesn't get enough credit as a songwriter outside of country enthusiasts. Dolly's secretly up there with Paul Simon and Tom Brady for biggest winner after breaking up a successful partnership with Porter.
I like Dolly and her country twang. The good thing about Country it's telling stories and she tells them we'll her voice is excellent. I liked Travelling man it's a favourite of mine
Wonderful. Dolly is a treasure.
7/10 Short, sharp and sweet country. Does exactly what you'd expect
Great album. Some hits, but generally you can hear why she has been around so long
Like a bit of Dolly
Her take on soul inspired country - Here I Am - is a stand out. I appreciate the stripped down instrumentation, for a 70’s country record. Although the tremulous voice is not my favorite, she isn’t breathy, so the effect isn’t as disturbing.
hell yeah dolly
Not a big country fan, but really enjoyed this one. Simple harmonically, but a lot of fun
C’est bon mais ça se ressemble pas mal du début à la fin. 27min, se faisant, est une durée adéquate!
Doily Paton is a Queen of Country. She tells a great story. Enjoyed this
I have a soft spot for Dolly, purely because I love ‘Jolene’. So I thought something on here might be decent, but not the majority of thing as it turns out. Dolly you little ripper.
Nice album, she has a wonderful voice. I really appreciate a shorter album without any filler. Didn’t connect on a super strong level but every song was nice and charming. Might revisit from time to time.
Enjoyed this a lot. Dolly has such a unique voice and lyrics. First time listening to a dolly record and was impressed. Liked majority of songs
Solid 4. Would give it 4.5 if I could.
A lovely country album that contains all the things a country album should have. Furthermore, how can you hate on Dolly too much? 4/5 since it is not my favorite genre.
Dolly is an icon and a legend. I normally don't love country, but this is fun. The songs "Coat of Many Colors" is iconic. This is fun. She is such a great singer! Liked Songs: "Coat of Many Colors" , "Traveling Man" , "If I Lose My Mind" , "Early Morning Breeze" , "The Way I See You" , "Here I Am" , "A Better Place To Live"
All ye come to worship at the altar of Saint Dolly
Dolly’s voice is so natural and pure. Stories sung with effortless charm.
Her vocals really make this album. Very good vibes all around.
Overall the most positive uplifting vibes ever. She has an amazing voice
Classic « country » record
Fantastic album. First album by dolly Parton I’ve listened to aside from Jolene.
Dolly Parton, big tits and a bigger heart
okay dolly I critically underestimated you
I think it’s genuinely genius that Dolly opens this album with a song about the most loving mom imaginable followed by a mom who steals her daughter’s boyfriend and abandons her.
Coat of Many Colors is Dolly Parton at her most heartfelt and sincere. The title track is one of her finest songs, a simple story about childhood poverty told with warmth, love, and dignity. It shows Dolly’s gift for turning personal experience into something universal, and it carries an emotional weight that lingers long after the song ends. That same mix of honesty and melody runs through much of the album, giving it a sense of intimacy that feels both humble and powerful. What makes the record so strong is its balance of vulnerability and spirit. There are tender, reflective moments like “Early Morning Breeze,” but also playful tracks such as “Traveling Man” that showcase her wit and storytelling charm. The arrangements are stripped back enough to let Dolly’s voice shine, yet full of the country character that defines her style. Coat of Many Colors may not be flashy, but it captures everything that makes Dolly special: honesty, humanity, and a knack for songs that stay with you.
Overall enjoyable ablum. Not a genre I visit much, but I always feel good after these types of albums. They are nastolgic for me in a very specific way. No real stand outs for me, but I think this album works as a whole anyway. Also, I can absolutely hear how early Dolly inspiried so many artists.
Obviously familiar with Dolly Parton, but I don’t actually think I had heard an album of hers. I was immediately impressed - the first 2-3 songs are excellent and a nice showcase of her ability to tell different stories with different emotions, across different country styles. From there the rest of the album can’t quite match those highs other than a song or 2. but she consistently displays her vocal and storytelling talent and ability to write a solid country tune. Not sure how much I’ll actually revisit, but I was surprisingly impressed here.
I like Dolly Parton a lot- her voice and energy is really enjoyable to listen to. It wasn't my favorite of her albums though.
Gorgeous voice. Proper old school, vocal-lead country music. Lyrics are expressed clearly and are thematically exactly as you might expect early 70s country music to be. Don't discount the musicianship either - plenty of cool guitar licks, straight grooves, etc. In fact, I'd say you have both of kinds of music on this album - Country and Western.
Cute and fun album
Great album, and great background music to work to. Will add this to rotation.....
Don’t know why, but the older I get the more I appreciate Dolly Partin’s music. I’ve always been a fan of bluegrass and enjoyed some old style country. Maybe it’s the more I know about Dolly the more I like her music. Great voice and a wonderful person.
I really enjoyed this. Her voice is so great, and I like country more than I thought I did.
This is an endearing album with classic Dolly flair. Coat of Many Colors is Dolly's favorite song for a reason.
Parton is a songwriting machine with too many hits to mention both for herself and numerous other artists. I’m not a massive fan of country music but Dolly knows how to weave a good narrative to pull on your heartstrings or raise a rye smile. The first 2 tracks are superb and it’s hard to hold that kind of standard for the whole album but she gives it a good try. Sit back and enjoy.
Here I Go Again standout, also loved Traveling Man
Day 35 First listen- What a good country album, beautiful and simple melodies, and Dolly's voice is just wonderful. I enjoyed it thoroughly. (4.5/5)
love my close personal friend
Solid country/bluegrass album. Great vocals and song writing. 4 stars.
Country used to be good! What have they done to us??
Super fun album by her. Quite surprised by her voice and I thought she was just a 9-5 lady. Lowkey goated album. Ears were craving something new and it was pretty good. It sounded quite real instead of all synthy or modern. Great change. Solid 7
I actually liked this one way more than I thought I would. I’m not a huge fan of country generally. However, going through this I’ve realized how much better some of the greats like old Johnny Cash and Dolly both are compared to the modern country garbage. Also, you can’t help but feel good listening to her, and she has done so much good, having lived in Tennessee for the past several years she has left such a lasting and impactful legacy and it’s easy to see why.
What a voice! This is what songwriting and storytelling is meant to be.
I'm here for this
I don't hate country music, but I am very picky about it. Dolly Parton easily falls into the great column for me She brings an authenticity that cannot be faked. Dolly is a national treasure and by all accounts a great human being.
Fav songs: Traveling Man; My Blue Tears A nice album from a great artist. It isn't really my kind of music but I still appreciate it.
Pleasant country tunes by a fabulous vocalist
Dolly Parton is a national treasure. Her voice is rich and sweet without being saccharine. Her sings are well crafted and humorous. This is a really good album — a 4.
Good good what a voice, just elevates your mood. Some great songs here, can’t deny that Dolly is one of the GOATs. 4.6/5.0 Best Song: She’s Never Met A Man (She Didn’t Like)
Charming.
I can honestly say I've never listened to a Dolly Parton album. I have seen the movie 9 to 5 and heard the title track, and I've heard a few songs from her from time to time. This will be a first complete album listen. Wow, what a great country voice! Really old school country, which is my favorite. Good storytelling. I like the vibrato on her voice. Gospel Hymns vibe on My Blue Tears, reminds me of childhood. I like the short song format, most songs under 3 minutes. They pack a punch. I enjoyed this enough to give her catalog a listen. 4
Very well done album. Don’t love country
some nice tunes on this album, for sure. I'm just not a big fan of dolly's voice, so I think it's a four-star album for me.
Beautiful. Could’ve used another bop or two.
Great album. Dolly’s mom was all over the board
Thanks, Dolly.
Previously rated: Trio (3/5) ********************* First her momma makes her wear a crappy coat, then she immediately turns around and steals her boyfriend!? Poor Dolly. At least she made a pretty good record out of it. Best track: Traveling Man
Tennessee represent! woot woot. Fun album all the way through. Great storytelling and a great voice. Just an overall strong album. High 4
Dolly is great and I love how compact this record is. Each song gets enough runtime to shine but never overstays it's welcome. The longest track of the ten, Here I am, is 3:19 and it's also my favorite. The bass line on this track is so cool. Strong 4/5
lovely sound
I love the title track so much, it makes me want to cry for no good reason. I’m a big fan of Dolly Parton’s storytelling, I think it’s her best quality as an artist, I don’t always love her vocal choices in some songs or even the theme of the songs but 9 times out of ten you can guarantee that her songs tell a good story. Traveling Man made me giggle honestly, the end with her just rambling is too much. The harmonies in some of these songs are stunning also. I liked it, I am confused about her stance on her mother though, one second she loves her and the next she’s sad cause her mums ran off with her man (so should I like her mum or no.. unsure). I also see how she’s one of the blueprints of the country genre because I swear all of her songs sound like the could be current Irish country songs lol. Also they clearly based Lucy Grey Bird or whatever the characters called songs from the Hunger Games prequel cause again same vibes, could hear Rachel Zegler singing these in that dusty looking dress ahah, particularly Early Morning Breeze. The Way I See You is an underrated ballad, if Whitney Houston covered that one too it definitely would’ve popped off also cause the build and the lil high note in the chorus or pre-chorus bit was so pretty and then followed by Here I Am.. ugh so wholesome. And I’m here for the gospel vibes in the chorus, give her a choir for every song cause it would slap. 70/100
There’s a reason she’s the queen of country music.
Love this love Dolly
im a huge metal fan but classic dolly is great
Fabulous and some people say she’s just big pair of tits.
Easy to see why she’s an American icon.
Beautiful album, the lyrics and everything were so nice. Great voice, I love the balance of all the instruments as well. Would recommend, and I’m looking more into her discography now as well.
Definitely would listen to this again. “A Better Place To Live” - mad to think that 54 years ago Dolly was singing about making the world a better place for all, but it does make you wonder if we actually have on a human level.
4’5
Dolly is the heart country needs
love dolly, not a huge fan of country but I enjoyed it
Dolly :) Lovely. Reckon it benefitted as the first full album of hers i've listened to from not having any of the Big Ones on it. Nice mix of tempos and sounds and just a nice time on a sunny day.
Solid album. Dolly has a great melodic voice. Stand out songs - coat of many colours, A better place to live
So good. A classic. Holds up. Love it. 4/5
the inimitable voice (and style) of dolly parton. country with elements of folk and rock.
A national treasure
A beautiful little album. Tracks that are short and sweet, poignant, and of course, beautifully sung.
First full album I've listened to of hers but it's a beautifully painted picture by a very talented musician that I've been missing out on
The title track is such a good song. This is a Dolly album what’s not to like?
I'd listen to coat of many colours again it is a good country song
YES, 4.5 probably??
marvelous. at times too 'twangy' for me, but it's Dolly and tracks 1-4 fantastic only in a way Dolly can do.
Not a fan of country in general but her poignant storytelling with that sweet beautiful voice is easy to listen to. Love that each song is sub 3 minutes. Just enough. She makes it seem so easy.
Dolly! Just a lovely album. Favorite tracks: Here I Am, Coat of Many Colors
I love the old country western sound. Dolly is an icon in this genre. I normally don't love so much vibrato in the vocals, but she gets a pass just because she's Dolly. Makes it sound good
Great voice, poignant songs. Surprisingly great bass album.
Honestly, I could see giving this a 3, but this album was pretty cool in a lot of ways. I liked the slight hint of R&B/Soul, which, when paired with the lush production and slide guitar, made everything feel so smooth. I also thought the lyrical content, while not the most deep, was still emotionally resonant. Favorite Track: A Better Place to Live
She sounds amazing on this - loving the little country guitar numbers in the background - Okayyyy dolly
Love Dolly Parton. Great classic country album. Pleasant listen.
True to country roots but also straight up stories being told with a melody and harmony to match.
NICE
I was criminally late to country music and I feel like it’s because records like this one weren’t being played where I was growing up. Dolly is mesmerizing and this record is a delight from start to finish. Some moments are slow and melancholic, some are upbeat and invigorating. Either way, Dolly’s voice shines at every corner and the song writing is earnest and full of heart. Highlights include Coat of Many Colors, She Never Met a Man, Early Morning Breeze, A Better Place to Live. But every song is delightful in its own way and those picks are just based on the current first pass
Bom e simples. Não há muito que dizer. A voz dela pode irritar as vezes, mas felizmente o disco é curto o bastante. 4/5
Siste låta er forferdelig, men albumet er fantastisk
i knew she was an icon but this was truly iconic
Real
Schön anzuhören, gerne wieder
lovely, I really like "Early Morning Breeze"
Dolly!!!! I love Dolly and I thought this was a sweet little thing that I would definitely listen to again. Standout songs: Coat of Many Colors Traveling Man A Better Place to Live
Beautiful.
I really did not mind this album. I think Dolly's voice is sweet and just easy to listen to.
3.75
Just such joy here in this album.
Even though she’s a pop culture icon who I’ve always known about I never actually listened to Dolly’s music until now. It’s really good!
Better than Coldplay.
really good country albumn
As someone who is not a fan of country music, this album was enlightening. I always knew Dolly Parton was something special, but this album reinforced that knowledge. She manages to take what I often times feel is a tired and repetitive genre and produced songs that are poignant, sweet, and funny. An absolutely fantastic album. 4.5⭐️
Classic Dolly, what's not to like?! 😊
Good stuff. A glimpse to a different world of music I normally have no interest in. FS: Coat of Many Colours.
This is a masterclass in storytelling and obviously a great of the genre. Not a genre I particularly care for, but we all love Dolly. Was a bit disappointed not to recieve any of the classic bangers here (and it was just a bit toooo country for me), but a bonus point for writing all her own songs and for the twist ending of Travelling Man - lol.
Great songwriter. Very poetic.
Who doesn’t love Dolly?
Fantastic whiplash between track 1 and 2. Sounded great!
almost no skips
Sometimes I think we're all so busy adoring Dolly Parton for being a human ray of sunshine, we underrate her as a singer-songwriter. This album is a testament to her ability to tell a great story in a song as well as in an interview.
'So I tell my mama that I reckon I oughta / Go to the spring and fetch us some water.' The god talk doesn't do it for me, but Parton is undoubtedly a superb, powerful vocalist, and knows quite well how to compose soulful, compelling pop-country songs. Emphasizing the metaphor of 'many colors,' be it of a coat or a butterfly, Parton ensures, at the very least, that some of what she sings about will hit home: if not this color than the other will be a relatable patch of stumbled-upon truths. She's not Patsy Cline, but then again, who is? She sings w/ an impressive amount of vigor and clarity, she's never dull or wanting of life, and her songs are polished in their curtness but raw in their simplicity.
Loved it. 4.5 stars.
3.5 stars
Heartfelt
A decent album. The first song made me teary eyed. The second one made me laugh. The last one was touching. In between that the rest kinda blurred in a way that a less kind reviewer would call same-y and I would call consistent. Genuine skill and feeling and heart shine throughout, either way.
I liked this. Some really nice songwriting.
Hello Dolly, we've always liked you. More albums should be under 30 minutes, especially for this project.
3.5
Album that makes you feel at peace, would be nice to listen to while driving.
Dolly is just a pure joy. All of her early albums are just rife with honky tonk charm and immersive storytelling. Not only does Dolly write her own music, but she’s also one of the sweetest people walking the earth. Just one of Appalachia’s finest exports.
Not familiar with any of the songs on this one but surprisingly enjoyed it. I'd listen to it again.
Lovely Dolly Parton!
I have a habit of detracting stars from artists who are shitty people so it’s only fair I award Dolly an extra star for being a really good person.
Legend
What a refreshing album to hear in the present moment. Dolly Parton has to be one of the most down to earth, good human beings in show business. From the Coat Of Many Colors that her mother sewed her to A Better Place To Live, Dolly is genuine.
first country album. Took some time but I ended up liking it. I liked here i am
One of the goats
Got to love Dolly, Travelling Man and Early Morning Breeze were the highlights of this short, enjoyable lp.
I'm pretty ignorant of country music, so this isn't strictly my thing. However, it's a solid, concise album. The songwriting is pretty strong, and I'm partial to Dolly's recognisable warbling. The music is mostly understated, with punchy bass/drum sounds when needed, and warm tones from the guitars. I haven't got much to complain about here, apart from it being outside my ballpark. 4*
Liked it, didn't love it
In addition to dolly being an excellent person, the second half of the album is particularly great - never met a man she didn't like, early morning breeze is like a smile made into a song, here I am is massive
Loved this. Love country. Maybe too short?
Dolly is such a charmer. Rhythm section here is fun - bass nice and high in the mix. Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze, Here I Am stand out. This isn't quite Dusty or Elvis in Memphis level of greatness, but it's close.
Title track is legendary and perfect. The rest is very good but never reaches that same height
Adorable in her miss americana vibe. Swifties would never
Let me start by stating the obvious…Dolly Parton is a national treasure. I remember when I was a kid catching glimpses of her on the Porter Wagoner show, and thinking she was just some dumb lady wearing a platinum blonde wig. But oh, how wrong I was! Of course, since then, I’ve learned so much about her extraordinary life, her talent as a songwriter, and what an incredible human being she is. Having said that, I’ve never been a big fan of her music, but my exposure to her has been very limited. Anyway, I didn’t expect to like this album at all, but I really was pleasantly surprised. I genuinely liked all of the songs, and was especially touched by the title track. I will say I’m not crazy about her voice on this album as it sounds really youthful to me. Overall, I give this album 3 1/2 stars, but I’m going to round it up to four out of respect for Dolly. We will miss her when she’s gone.
Pure country pop, in a classic sense Some more 70s indulgent elements (positive) than I was expecting - great storytelling, easy voice to absorb
Sweet vocals. Gotta love dolly
You can feel so much of Dolly’s personality in every song. It feels genuine and fun
it was a beautiful way for me to get into country. my blue tears easily made its way into my top 20 songs. apologies miss dolly i was unfamiliar with your game
Surprisingly, liked it
I've always liked Dolly as a person but I've really never listened to her music outside of a few hits. definitely a mistake. old country is just so good
I have been adamantly anti-country for most of my life because I'd only really been exposed to modern country, but over the past few years I've started exploring more traditional country and alt-country acts. This is my first time listening to a Dolly album and it's wonderful! Favourite track(s): Coat of Many Colours, Travelling Man, Early Morning Breeze, Here I Am.
Dolly Parton's voice is meant for AM radio. It is the epitome of that phrase "clear as a bell". I think about listening to music in my dad's store - a radio with a huge antenna that let us hear shortwave stations from Cuba, some random conversations between truckers, and a range of often static-ridden AM stations. This record sounds like those stations. I've read that the approach to recording was quite minimal, and the record does sound spare.
very good
I had only ever listened to titular song from this album. I have always liked the sound of country music from this time period and this is no exception. Dolly kills it on this album.
‘Coat of Many Colours’ was one of Grandma’s favourite songs. A couple of songs I hadn’t heard before but overall a good album.
This isn't my favourite Dolly album- not sure if I've ever listened to this in full before. Still, it's definitely a solid entry into the classic country canon. Most of these songs (title track esp) should be sappy/cliche, but they're so earnest they just work. Travelling Man v underrated twist-ending country song IMO.
there was way more to this than i expected. obviously some straight forward classic country but some cool basslines and stuff like that too
This one is hard to separate how amazing the person is from the music, in a good way. So I listened again really trying to just appreciate the music. I have never listened to a full Dolly album so it was a good treat. Her voice may not be top 10 ever, but it pretty and she engages emotion in it just right so you feel it but not too cheesy. She hits on certain elements of her life and culture in a way that is not too over the top and degrading to other. Her stories are hers and she makes them unique and different, its folksy, blue grass, country, spiritual, 70's, even a little jazzy. Just simple and beautiful.
I like this alot more than I thought I would. She mixes it up with 70's boogie honkey tonk style country (Traveling Man) to classic bluegrass (My Blue Tears), country spiritual (Mystery of the Mysteries), 70's folk (Early Morning Breeze - especially like the bass playing in this one). Good stuff!
There’s something nostalgic and comforting about this, even though I wasn’t familiar with any of these songs. A lot of them remind me of a song the sexy bear at Disney’s Country Bear Jamboree might sing. I love the heart she puts into her vocals too. The songs are simple but sweet and soulful. Very enjoyable listen!
Yo pas pire
This is very nostalgic for me, my mum and granny like Dolly Parton I wasn't sure if I liked the vibrato she puts in her voice initially but I came around on it, it helps give her voice more character I think A very good classic country album and a breeze at only 27 minutes, doesn't overstay its welcome at all Highlights: Early Morning Breeze, Traveling Man, Here I Am
4.5
I do love me some Dolly. I expect she gets her ass-kicked by feminists for her “please don’t take my man/please your man” oeuvre, but she does mountain country more beautifully than anyone ever has or ever will. What it must’ve been like to hear her early on, that voice filling little churches and halls.
The cover of this always out me off for some reason but the album is quite beautiful and quintessential dolly. What a voice! I’ll be listening to this again and hope to find it on vinyl
Short and sweet
Dolly deserves it. Borp.
Superb country to listen to while contemplatively looking out of the window on a rainy day. While Dolly Parton steals the show with a fantastic vocal performance, the instrumentation is the real driving force on the album. It sounds so authentic. A good lap steel guitar never misses. Best Tracks: - Traveling Man - Here I Am - Coat Of Many Colours Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 8.5/10
Dolly is awesome. This is a short 26 minute venture into many subjects. Great music and songwriting here. 3.75/5
Half decent, nice and short and easy enough to listen to. The shortness helps avoid any danger of the style getting too repetitive and there are some decent numbers on here. I’d think about listening again for sure - 3.5 so rounding up for a change
You know what, Dolly? Hell yeah!
dolly goated
Short and sweet! Great songwriting and even better singing
I always love some Dolly
Beautiful lyrics, great country album. Enjoyed the basslines and melodies. -Coat of Many Colors -Traveling Man -Early Morning Breeze -Here I Am
LETS GO DOLLY 🔥
A fantastically personal dive into who Dolly is, her family around her and the experiences she’s had as her career is taking off. This is my first experience with Dolly and 70s Country and I enjoyed every second.
