Reviews (page 5 of 12)
Enjoyed the album more than I thought I would. Lyrics were a bit too cracker barrel, but otherwise the songs were good. Traveling Man and Here I Am were highlights for me
Nobody does it like Dolly
Liked it more than I thought I would.
The standout songs are popular for a reason. The rest are pure Dolly in sound, but less moving overall. Still a very good album.
7.5/10 This is route one country but exceptionally good at it. One thing that stands out is the voice, obviously, but especially the clarity of it. Lovely. The stories are told simply and clearly. Really well put together with some hints of folk, rock, gospel. Best: Early Morning Breeze
Coat of Many Colors: beautiful song and intro to the album. So poignant, made me cry. Loved the gentle guitar throughout. Travelling Man: Edgier song with a bit of humour. Imagining long car journeys and the wild west. Enjoyed it. My Blue Tears: Very nostalgic tune, loved the harmonies. She is an incredible song writer. If I Lose My Mind: crying - love a song about mother daughter relationships The Mystery Of The Mystery: not a big fan of heavy religious songs, but I appreciate the message. She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like): is the og song about pick me girls? Another sad song about Dolly chasing after a no good man who would up and leave her for another woman. STAND UP DOLLY Early Morning Breeze: Love the bass at the start of this and throughout. Nature/life appreciation. The Way I See You: Amazing love song, enjoyed the piano in this Here I Am: Felt very empowering A Better Place To Live: A very sweet finish to the album. Final thoughts: I loved this album, I love Dolly Parton. Her voice is so emotive and the nostalgic country tones forming the instrumentals on the tracks is comforting and familiar. The instrumentation leaned a little corny at times, and songs with heavy emphasis on religion sometimes make me uncomfortable. But despite this, it was a solid album I enjoyed.
Only complaint is that I wanted MORE!! Love Dolly, songs were sweet and her voice is incredible as always. Also, I'm going to find those children who made fun of her and give them the chancla treatment.
This is why Dolly Parton is that b*tch. These new girls could NEVER, they can try but they can't. I listened to this while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 and it enhanced my experience. She's a wonderful singer and writer and her songs are catchy. Fave Songs: - Travelling Man (banger) - My Blue Tears (banger!) - She Never Met A Man - The Way I See You - Here I Am (banger) - A Better Place To Live (great end!) I didn't love every song but they all sounded wonderful, it flowed so well that I felt like I was listening to several long songs. It's not that they're the same, the album just felt really good listening to it. The songs are shorter than I expected but nonetheless still very well written and well produced.
Turns out that old-style country music without the pedal steel and overtly mewling vocals is something I quite like. Dolly Parton is one of the few vocalists of any genre that I actually/actively enjoy listening to - there's something so pure and clear and *unaffected* about her voice that is somehow soothing. As for the album itself I'd never heard this one - quite simple and direct which I feel like I've written about rock albums and been bored afterwards yet here it just works so well. Definite keeper. 8/10 4 stars.
Eigentlich echt nett. Ich mochte den Vibe. Hat was sehr Nostalgisches.
This will be the known as the album i listened to when I went to the beach with my son and had a great time (and ice cream)
Good Dolly album.
Classic old country sound. She definitely talked to her audience of housewives at the time. I’m personally not a fan of this style but great songwriting for sure.
Really good, I can see why Dolly Parton is such a big name in country!
This is country I can get behind! 3.75
Good golly miss Dolly!
Pleasant enough country album. Couldn't fully pay attention but I liked what I listened to. I'm a sucker for this era of country anyways. While this doesn't really sound innovative, it focuses on good storytelling and there's a good variation of songs on there.
More my style. Good album. Dolly has a great voice so gentle
I mean, pretty solid. Nice and short, some good narrative songs and the classic Dolly voice. Would listen again, not a fave.
8.1 - Started off with a banger, was good but didn’t stay as good.
Enjoyable album. Great storytelling and singing. Standout songs: Coat of many colors Here I am Better place to live
Muy chulo e interesante
Classic country. Dolly’s a great storyteller. Poetic and meaningful lyrics. I love her sweet, soulful voice. It’s tender, yet powerful.
Interesting how brief and progressive some of the songs are.
Highlights: Coat of Many Colours, Travelling Man, The Mystery of the Mystery, The Way I See You, Here I Am. In a nutshell: humble beginnings of the country queen. Country, just like blues, is a heavily diluted genre. You need to take a step back and see it in context; what it was like to hear the album in the year of its release. Dolly's songwriting, storytelling and charm is what makes her stand out. She is singing from the gut and from the heart. You do hear the pedal steel guitar and standard guitar/banjo, yet it doesn't sound hackneyed to me. I'm not a country music person, but after hearing Coat of Many Colours I will make time for Dolly. Overall: 8/10
Dolly’s voice is sweet and the lyrics are heartfelt. This album clocks in at an impressive 27 mins. She certainly fits a lot in. “A Better Place to Live” would be a hippie anthem were it not for the country affectation. “Coat of Many colors” has the -ability to make you cry and “here I am” is a proclamation we should all sing with Dolly’s gusto once in a while.
Country music that packs a punch. The tracks are short, sweet, and to the point. Modern-day country musicians only wish they could capture the same beautiful energy. The title track is a highlight, with succinct, peppy storytelling accompanying a simple lilting acoustic guitar line. The lyrics are really pretty. When the backing vocal harmonies come in, it's a brief moment of ascension to another plane. It's magical. Other highlights include the lighthearted Early Morning Breeze, with its subtle melodic nods to the blues, and Traveling Man, a high-energy song with a wild-west tinge. In addition, there's a good amount of album flow, of juxtaposed ups and downs between tracks that create a whole album experience, stowed in this short album of a mere 27 minutes. That's something that can't even be said for a lot of 1-hour-plus records. Admittedly, the music itself is extremely simple. Layering of vocals, strings, and acoustic guitars gives the passing appearance of complexity, but in actuality most of these songs consist of three chords – which doesn't give the ear much material to work with. It's a good thing the music is texturally and lyrically rich to make up for lack of harmony. 4/5 Key tracks: Coat Of Many Colors, Traveling Man, Early Morning Breeze
Quite nice and funny stuff about love, I knowed my mumma
I wasn’t sold at first, but it only took a couple songs for me to get into it. I don’t think Dolly will join my rotation of frequently played artists, but I’d happily listen to this full album again. I’m not a big fan of the singalong-esque style that I feel pops up at times, but she avoids the repetitive cliches modern pop country is known for and has a very inoffensive sound and lyrics.
A wonderful classic.
Ótimo e compacto álbum de country com uma influência de rock que eu não estava esperando e letras divertidas e emocionantes
I've been an admirer of Dolly Parton since my boys were very young and unsolicited children's books started arriving each month in the mail, courtesy of her and the United Way. She is a saint, yet I've never really delved into her music. Also, and I'm not an expert on country music by any stretch, but I always felt like Dolly Parton was considered more of a novelty and overlooked in favor of a mostly male cohort (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Jones, etc.) but also Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline. Coat of Many Colors is a wonderful listen front to back, fully of life and heartache. Early Morning Breeze lilts on a pretty melody, the harmonizing on My Blue Tears is lovely and the storytelling on songs like Traveling Man and She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like) embody what makes this era of country music so great. Also, the musicianship and production on this album are first rate.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never sat down and listened to one of Dolly Parton's records from beginning to end. She's a great singer, a brilliant songwriter, and (afaict) a class act. Dolly is a Real One.
All of who Dolly Parton is as a person is in this anlbum, and who doesn’t love Dolly?
Great storytelling as usual for Dolly, nice simple country with great production. Only knew the title track, the others seemed more like b-sides but were fine.
Pleasant!
Pretty good
Man I love old country and Dolly Parton is a legend. This album has some really solid songs on it. I especially loved Early Morning Breeze. It sounded like it could have been a Grateful Dead song and the bass line especially felt like a Phil Lesh bass line to me.
What a fun record. Its self reflective, has great storytelling and excellent song writing. I like that she is homaging and leaning into the Appalachian style of singing and music, but also adding in elements of rockabilly and outlaw country. I love how honest and earnest her sound is. Dolly Parton is an American treasure.
I grew up listening to all the old school country acts, but never fully appreciated them because they weren't "cool." Boy, was I wrong. This album is Dolly in her prime, singing about heartbreak, and kindness, and love. My goodness, she is a treasure. I love these lyrics in A Better Place To Live. This world certainly would be a better place to live if we followed Dolly's advice. And if we'd love one another instead of finding faults We could afford the price of peace, love is all it costs Oh wouldn't it be great to live and sing in harmony Everybody take your brother's hand and sing along with me
dolly is always a great time ! downloaded 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,10. coat of many colours was the best for me of the album
Dolly paints vivid pictures. These songs feel like journal entries. She reminds me of Future.
This album is quite a roller-coaster thematically- poverty, prosaic and innocent delights, insecurities and loyalties in love, salacious and inappropriate sexual dynamics, mother-daughter bond...oh my. These complex issues and emotions are given clarity by by rather simplistic lyrics. Parton is not Dylan or Swift but an excellent narrator nonetheless. Melodically the album is consistent with enough variations in styles, moods and rhytms to make it engaging and enjoyable.
Honeyed southern charm Sings stories of life grand and bland With soaring vocals
This album fits the formula that I really dislike but somehow it works. Each song sounds the same and honestly from what I can tell, the stories are almost the same as well. But somehow Dolly makes this work. She keeps you wanting to hear what’s next. This album does sound more like a folk album than country. More Joni Mitchell and less Dolly…… Choice cut: Coat of Many Colors
Can’t argue with Dolly.
Dolly alone can save us.
😭
Dolly Parton's vibrato really set her aside from other singers.
3.5
bangers
A perfect country album for me. Does not overstay it's welcome and has a lot of great variety of instrumentation and just lovely songs from the legend herself.
Not usually a country fan but man, Dolly Parton is something special.
yes lets gooooo this shit is lit fam
First half great. Amazing playing throuought
Great voice and songs
Lovely album. Title track is incredible. Also loved Early Morning Breeze, The Way I see You, and Here I Am
Good record! Beautiful voice. So young!
At first I was like ... Dolly Parton? But I have always liked her as a person and after listening to her storytelling ways through her music it is all so wholesome and uplifting I can't help but to feel like she is pretty much a treasure. I am not much of a country fan, but the element of listening erases any weirdness from "genre." Don't try to do much of anything else when listening though! You find yourself stopping so you can hear the punchlines!
What is like about classical country music is the stories they tell and Dolly Parton is a masterful storyteller. From the innocence and optimism of the title track to the loss of innocence in "If I Lose My Mind" her songs find a way to reach the listeners.
I guess I'm a Dolly fan and did not know it.
I’m not particularly into the country of this period with how twangy it is. Dolly definitely delivers that style, but she does it in a way I found more palatable. I can’t say I loved the album, but I found at the shorter run time, it was an overall enjoyable listen to here stuff from her that I hadn’t previously. 3.5 / 5
Humorous, but too heart feely and made for radio play for my tastes. She has a nice quiver in her voice
quite good!
Dolly is the best!
Classic, I think Jolene is the overall more solid album.
A nice album from Dolly showing her songwriting and singing talents
Sweetness. I didn’t know any of these. Just sweet.
01) Coat of Many Colors - 10,0 02) Traveling Man - 9,0 03) My Blue Tears - 8,5 04) If I Lose My Mind - 8,0 05) The Mystery of the Mystery - 8,0 06) She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like) - 8,5 07) Early Morning Breeze - 8,0 08) The Way I See You - 8,0 09) Here I Am - 8,5 10) A Better Place to Live - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,45 (85/100) Current ranking: 86/400 My 400th album, 47 of them have earned the highest rating so far. Will Dolly join them? As someone who is familiar with her work only through "Jolene", "9 to 5" and "I Will Always Love You", the first song "Coat Of Many Colors" already leaves me in awe. What a great and emotional song! It is followed by a story about an unusual love triangle (Dolly, traveling man and Dolly's mom) after which I have already found a lot of new respect for Dolly Parton. By the end of the album everything has become a little watered down (or my concentration has weakened), but this is still a very good album. Maybe not five stars (at least not to me), but it deserves four without a doubt.
A classic country album with Dolly's sweet earlier voice. A real gem that I hadn't heard before. Despite having no smash hits on it, there's no disappointments. Will revisit and explore more of her earlier catalog.
I actually just recently listened to this front to back for the first time a couple months ago. Dolly can truly do no wrong to me. I first started listening to her when I became obsessed with miley's younger now album, which features dolly. I went into a bit of a rabbit hole and was so happy to have done so. queen
This album is good fun. Dolly is sweet in her voice is classic at this point. She seems to be on the verge of cracking and she always sounds young and sweet. Title track is my favorite but it's a short listen and the whole thing is nice to listen to.
This was a funny listen in the morning. Very much not what I start my day with on most occasions but it slotted right in effortlessly and even had me humming along to some of the songs. I feel like Dolly Parton is the woman version of Hank Williams or even Johnny Cash. The subject matter isn’t about killing people or being robbed in a bar, the songs are mostly about emotional states, but the simple song structure and poignant lyrics are just like her male counterparts. Coat of Many Colors (the song) is a touching tale about a mother’s love and being broke. My Blue Tears is a sad story of being betrayed, again, told to her mother. In fact, her mother comes up a lot in this album. The whole thing feels really genuine and hopeful at times. It made me smile. I’m not a country music guy but after some of these classics we’ve heard my opinion probably would’ve been much more favorable in the 60s and 70s. What a change this genre has taken.
Nothing less than a strong 4 for Dolly. She broke through at an early age through determination, grit, and a whole lot of talent. She has been impossible to ignore or deny her entire career. She has never really gone away , and like Elvis has never forgotten her roots and has given so much back to her home state and community. One of the greatest American singer/song writers of our generation.
Truly the queen. What a great album, it’s just over too quickly. Actually that’s a pretty rare occurrence for records included on this list.
The title track is an unbelievable song and perfectly performed. I played it for my kids to try to give them some perspective and gratitude for everything they have. I don’t think they got it. Dolly is a treasure. Can’t say I loved the rest of the album but as a singer and song writer she’s great. I’ve prob said it before but I don’t see how she plays guitar with those nails!
That voice! Like a warm hug. A warm voluptuous hug. No chance I’m going any lower than a 4 for Dolly. 3.75/5
Sentimental, sweet, and authentic. Dolly is one of a kind and will never be replicated. Country has never been my favorite genre, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy some classic country every once in a while. This album isn't world-changing or anything in the scope of country at the time, but it's short n' sweet and I think represents Dolly among her best as a singer-songwriter. I enjoy this more over her slightly "pop"-ier stuff that would come later.
Dolly's the best.
own
Enjoyed. She has a fantastic voice, and is a talented songwriter.
A better album than I expected. I thought Parton was overrated. Turns out I was wrong, again. The title track is really good. There's a few other songs I liked. 4 stars for "Coat of Many Colours".
The title track is one of the most iconic country songs of all time. There are some other good songs on the album too, but it does get a bit similar sounding. The stories told are well crafted if not a touch standard for older country.
You've gotta love a bit of Dolly! Some good tracks on there.
Love Dolly even though not a fan of this album.
I was not looking forward to this when it came up, despite having a soft spot and some nostalgia for Dolly. While I don't hate country outright, it's not my usual go-to. This was pretty great, though.
I can picture her singing this proud in legitimately any location, matched to the band.
Fleetwood Mac’s girl voice
my only flight out of state this year (it's been a busy time at school) was to visit my partners in Tennessee. we decided to visit Dollywood's adjacent waterpark Splash Country cause it was relatively close. it was... kinda nice? you expect an offshoot of a celebrity tie in theme park to be, like, Mickey Rooney potato restaurant levels of jank, right? it's odd. Dolly Parton grew up in the 70's equivalent of an Abraham Lincoln log cabin, started playing music at age eight, got into the industry, got really huge, and built a theme park ten miles from where she was born. it's odd to see someone do what they knew they were born for so well that they can build a theme park out of all the money they made from it. ...is there a God? i've doubted it in the past, but i really think God put Dolly Parton on Earth to do what she's been doing for the past half a century. it's a matter of predestination, fate -- the universe always meant to her to get this big. this is a roundabout way to say that the album is strong, sweet, and deserving of its place on the list. considering batting average, 70's country is better than 70's prog. fight me.
Yep
I will always enjoy Dolly’s vocals. Always. Her voice is so vibrantly pure. I enjoyed this for sure. Traveling man is funny, coat of many colors is a sweet story, and early morning breeze has a unique and pretty sound. This was a good one!
3.5/5
So many great songs on here. This was a family favorite when we listened to it over the weekend. Dolly is an incredible song writer. While her voice is not my favorite ever, it's undeniable that she is a national treasure.
Lovely album. Would definitely listen to it again. Possibly on a road trip.
Definitely not my style, and not something I’d listen to on a regular basis. However, evaluating the album on its own merit, the songs are indeed very very pretty. I mean, it’s also some slappy happy nonsense, and even at 27 minutes long it gets tedious. But it’s calm, meditative, evocative, and actually some fine work.
Really nice, I enjoyed
Yeah howdy pardner. Wife hates Dolly on account of her squeaky voice and oversize breasts so will have to leave this one till later. 4 star just in case
I mean its ok=kay but a little boring
Lovely!
Creepy
The stripped down songs show that 60s/70s country was much closer to the Greenwich folk scene than they ever would have admitted. Dolly's a true storyteller. However, early stereo recording techniques strike again! 'Here I am' has the kick on the right, rest of the kit on the left?!
Thoughts before listening: One of Dolly's classics. Its pretty hard to hate on Dolly Parton, and I'm sure this will be great. Review: This is a very enjoyable album from one of the biggest names in country music history. 50+ years later she is a household name, and the title track to this album is a staple. Dolly wrote the bulk of these songs and really set herself up as not only a star in the making, but also a creative force within her genre. 4-stars
So on a first listen, I found it to be one-dimensional but pleasant enough. I subsequently read the Wikipedia article for further context and listened again....the title track's subject and lyrics are undeniably poignant, the story itself enhancing the song to another level. Musically, it is still mostly uniform, but I guess that's the point with this style. I love the strategic placement of the kick drum on Travelling Man, with She Never Met A Man and My Blue Tears the other standouts for me.
Dolly is a national treasure. Great album and great person. 4/5
Familiar sounds from my youth. Quick listen but classics.
God bless this lady. I personally loathe C&W but her mix of traditional country and her gospel/church roots does not compel me to turn it off ASAP. Genuine feeling and emotions as she sings. Deserves its place here over others.
I love it! Coat of many colors (the first track) is my favorite song in this album! The storytelling in every song is amazing and feels so personal. The vocals and the instruments are amazing, but Dolly's vocal carries all the emotions, capturing the essence of every song and taking the meaningful lyrics to the next level.
Really enjoyed this-first dolly album ive ever listened too. Very comforting and warm feeling from it
This one is hard to rate. Her delivery and song writing skills are top notch. Coat Of Many Colors is a beautiful folky song. I personally don't like country music, but for the genre this deserves a listen.
very good!
Back to back old country eh. Also relaxing to listen to. Classic country blows modern country out of the water.
USA
Great classic country
This was a nice album. I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to listen to it ever but I enjoyed listening to it while doing chores.
I’ve always known about Dolly Parton but I’ve never listened to any of her music. I thoroughly enjoyed this album.
Not my style. A couple of the songs were good though.
Upbeat, very old sounding story country. Great voice, but that’s dolly for ya
Dolly has great pipes and really good lyrics. I enjoyed it and hadn't heard any of these songs before. Will listen again
Favourite tracks: coat of many colors; she never met a man (she didn't like); here I am
Great 👍👍
Fantastic album! first song is an absolute banger, nearly brought me to tears thinking about a mother's love. A few good songs mixed in between, especially The Way I See You. Might play that one at my wedding eventually.
I love dolly parton and I love this album! Some songs seemed a bit repetitive, but others I really enjoyed. Favourite song: Coats of Many Colours
4.5 stars. This is a nice little album (<30 min). Dolly has some dark themes and lyrics that her high pitched voice belies. Standouts are "Early Morning Breeze" which is a beautiful tune and "Traveling Man".
Falleg og einlæg plata.
Great album
A really good album, I love a bit of Dolly Parton. My favorite songs on it were Coat of Many Colours and Early Morning Breeze.
Just a great little album. Nothing mind-blowing for me, personally, but I really liked it, as it's the type of folk and western/southern/Appalachian music I really like. a Classic
Dolly can definitely write a song, nice album
Some good old country tunes! Dolly is great, there were some meh songs but Coat Of Many Colors is a banger.
Dolly Parton is a great singer, and this is a well put together album of good country songs. Not my favourite genre, but I'd put this on again.
Podia ser mais longo
What a great album. I read that she's written over 3000 songs. Absolutely outstanding. Beautiful voice and wonderful song writing.
Folksy Good old country The bass on a few of these songs slaps Tight Can’t believe this was her 8th album
Fun, enjoyable country
Dolly is an icon for a reason
Lovely change of pace. Dolly’s a treasure and this album was delightful. A little too one-note to be 5 stars, but it’s definitely a high 4. Not a bad track on here. 4/5 Highlights: Coat of Many Colors Traveling Man She Never Met a Man (She Didn’t Like) Early Morning Breeze Here I Am
Great album. Very enjoyable, even the religious parts which I'm not usually super fond of.
The style is a little cheesy. But boy can she sing. She's got a fair amount of restraint but opens up and belts it at least a couple times on every song. And she transitions between those moods so casually and effortlessly that you can tell she's like a real 10/10 singer. This CD also has that other really crucial thing for an intro to a style I had not previously cared for - it's short. Like really short. I still don't really care for the style. But this is just good.
Dolly’s voice is hauntingly amazing. I had never listened to this album. Truly awesome.
Since GTA San Andreas I knew I don’t hate country (thanks to K ROSE), but I‘m also not american and maybe that helps. This album was a great listen for me and I really like it. She has a great voice for this style of music and she’s still active today. Would listen again if I am in the mood for country.
Hard to dislike anything she sings.
Everything about this album was well done and as good as could be expected for this genre. Highest marks for a sound that I don't like to hear a lot.
At first I was a little confused why this album didn't have things like "Jolene" on it. Helps if I look at wikipedia, right? Solid album by Parton, although "The Mystery Of The Mystery" seemed redundant. The other songs... sound like what I think country is, as opposed to the country music we have now. Not a bad thing, just... it makes it feel slightly dated to me. Top tracks: "Coat Of Many Colors," "Traveling Man," "A better Place To Live," "She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like"
I really enjoyed the lyrics on this album, nice job Dolly. The title track is sweet with a great message, while the next track Traveling Man is shrewd with a real clever twist. You get more of the former overall on this album, but there ain't nothin wrong with that. Other good songs of either variety are My Blue Tears (cleverly twisted), She Never Met a Man (cleverly twisted), Here I Am (sweet), and A Better Place to Live (sweet). The three songs penned by Porter Wagoner are also well-written and Dolly does a good job of delivering them - If I Lose My Mind, The Mystery of the Mystery, and The Way I See You. I have no idea why this album of hers was chosen among other possibilities, but it is a real solid album from a country icon.
I'm not a country fan, but I can appreciate how good this album is. I never listened closely to her singing in the past - really just knew the hits like 9 to 5 - she has so much more emotion in her singing than I realized. In the past, I probably would have characterized her voice as cheesy but on this album her singing is beautiful. Beyond that, the band is on point, and the music and lyrics are stirring. I can't give it a 5 because it's still mostly straightforward country (with a few exceptions - Early Morning Breeze is more folk than country. The Way I See You is kind of schmaltzy). That said, it's clearly a great album. Favorite tracks: Coat of Many Colors (by far my favorite), My Blue Tears, If I Lose My Mind, She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like), Early Morning Breeze.
I hate country, I like Dolly Parton as a person and I like the music she makes (despite being country). Fun stuff.
Featuring her powerful authentic southern accent voice, some decent storytelling and understated instrumentation, I quite enjoyed this country romp.
A short and fun listen. Wonderful storytelling and vocals on the title track. Easy to listen to and will come back to it every now and again.
4/5
Very good
Album 506 of 1001 Dolly Parton - Coat Of Many Colors (1971) Rating : 4.5 / 5 The first 45 I ever picked out for myself was 'Joshua' (her previous album from the same year) from Dolly Parton, so she holds a special place with me. That probably accounts for an extra half point. The first two tracks are the strongest, in my opinion, but the others are trailing pretty close behind. Better after the first listen. It is some iconic Dolly.
Miss Dolly simply does not miss
Absolutely timeless voice as both a songwriter and vocalist. Loved this record.
This was great. To short even.
I’m not a huge country music fan but Dolly’s talent is undeniable. I didn’t realize she was this mature as a songwriter by 1971. A very enjoyable listen that I would gladly listen to again.
4/5
Great voice production. A consistent album overall.
Classic, truly. Would love to know the origin of her vocal warble/shake voice thing she has going on, was this a thing before her or something she brought to the country music table?
I mean, how wholesome is Dolly Parton? Someone who has invested more money into child literacy in the USA than every administration since George W Bush? That deserves 5* on its own, but here we have 27 mins of acoustic Americana of the highest order. Dolly’s voice is as light as the bluebird on the prairie, but also covers the weight of the world such as marital infidelity and one’s relationship with the lawd almighty. I’m unlikely to listen to this again by choice, but Dolly is the American dream they should all aspire to. 5*
That's not my taste in musik. But a lot of nice Songs.
Not a fan of country music or Dolly Parton but this was surprisingly OK. Decent music with some fun lyrics.
DOLLY! the acceptable face of the US!!!!
She is such an excellent story teller.
Second country album in the last three days. I really enjoyed Emmylou Harris the other day, and I think I enjoyed this one just as much. Dolly Parton is one of those artists where I know I’ve heard a few of her songs, but because of my age I know her more as a media personality and philanthropist than as a musician. So it’s actually a treat to hear her music. She’s revered as a human being (rightfully so), and as a musician. So it was time to hear what made her famous in the first place. This was cool. Dolly has such an easiness to her voice. She was born to do this and it shows. The title track, which she apparently holds as one of her favorites, is a sweet and sentimental song about her modest upbringing and how she learned to value what she had, not what she didn’t. It’s a beautiful message and reveals what she’s been through in life. The rest of the album mostly hangs with this sentimentality, though it does venture into more typical country themes of love, love lost, and loneliness. It’s a very well produced album. The more upbeat tracks have the kind of energy they need to succeed, and the slower ballads are given the weight they deserve. My biggest gripe with it is that, at times, it’s kinda schmaltzy, corny. That may just be a symptom of the era and genre, but it doesn’t stick well with me. This falls at a true 3.5 stars, but I’m going to round up for queen Dolly. Standout Tracks: Traveling Man, My Blue Tears, She Never Met a Man (She Didn’t Like), Early Morning Breeze, Here I Am
Classic country....
Pleasant.
I think Dolly is one of those people who gets an extra star for being an exemplary human in the opposite was to someone like Morrissey. I'm not a country fan but I've listened to enough on this list now to appreciate it and I enjoyed the story telling then simplicity of the music and dolly's voice.
Coat of many colors is such a good and cute song. Dolly truly is a legend. I'm not a country fan, but Dolly never misses.
Nice
I've never actually sat down to listen to Dolly Parton but I was excited to see this pop up. Of course I've heard of her and know her as one of the great icons of country music, but I was glad to really enjoy this album. Simple storytelling with a great voice, I enjoyed every song. This is what country music should be. Gotta say this list has really shown my what good country music should be.
A lovely and sweet country album. Dolly’s voice is so wonderful. Even though this isn’t a “new album” it feels contemporary and classic. Wonderful lyrics and I love Dolly’s tiny vibrato.
You just know her coat of many colors went hard
While a tad homogenous, it doesn’t detract from the talent and execution present on this record. Dolly is full of passion and love and she posses a knack for spreading happiness to people. That is sufficient to write a magical country record, add to that some decent guitar licks, and great backing outfit and you have yourself a solid showing.
a genuinely charming album. dolly oozes sincerity throughout
I've listened to Dolly for over 50 years, mainly on the radio. I've always enjoyed her music but never listened to many albums and never that one specifically. The entire album is great and stands on its own without the well known title track. Here I am and Early Morning Breeze were amazing songs especially. This album is going to be in my rotation nowm
Best track is here I am
I usually enjoy me some Dolly.
The title track makes me cry without fail every time
Great album, just short. Couldn't believe the runtime. Classic country that I do feel I enjoy more, like Johnny Cash
Quite nice and cool
Beautiful singing by a beautiful human. Nice drumming by session drummer J. Carrigan
Dolly Parton is a saint! Marvel in her technicolour dream coat.
Dolly has such a sweet voice and this album was so cute. Very easy to listen to with fun lyrics.
Dolly is an amazing singer and an national treasure. The music here is old school country so a bit outside of my usual stuff but it's always nice to listen to an American icon.
my first full dolly parton album and a great one to start with. an essential bluegrass album with great storytelling and spectacular vocals from dolly. it convinced me to go back and listen to her other albums in full!
This was fun. Some classic country.
Great album. Who knew she was such a dirty girl. There's some pretty heavy topics on this album. I gave it two listens and will keep it in rotation.
Makes sense why she is the queen of country, her vocals are amazing and she's a fantastic story teller in such a short time.
Such authenticity seems almost too much to take at times, but this is priceless and pure, almost honorable in her commitments to telling it true and uniqely. Best cuts are "Mystery of the Mystery" i "Early Morning Breeze," and "She Never Met a Man" and title cut. The playing is sleepy good, barely noticeable in just how real this sounds, and even above commerce in a way.
Short lightheart country album with a great Singer.
I sure do wish contemporary country stars would ask themselves, "are you sure Dolly done it this way"?
Well everyone knows Dolly. Gotta admit never heard an album though. 1) this is nice. Early morning breeze is a highlight for me
Dolly Parton as a human is a national treasure. She also happens to be an excellent songwriter. It is very unfortunate for me that I don’t care for her voice much. It’s something about that inherent vibrato that is constantly present that I just don’t care for. I am truly the loser in this situation, because I would like to enjoy her music as much as it deserves.
Honestly, i was just shocked to see just how good Coat Of Many Colors really was since i wasn't expecting so much out of it. Dolly had a great voice throughout and she really showed that she put a large amount of effort and passion into her vocals. The music was handled really well for the most part too and the album cut a pace that was just right. It was long enough for the songs to really sink in but still quick enough for it not to feel tedious. My one issue with the album is some of the timing of certain aspects of certain tracks with examples being Early Morning Breeze ending far too early or Here I Am adding it's instruments too early. Other than that though, this is a great album that really made me know that there was more to Dolly than i had once thought. Best Song: A Better Place To Live Worst Song: If I Lose My Mind
Dolly is such a a star and it comes through in this album. It's probably a true 4.5--it's not all for me and I do like her pop a bit more but I love a distinct voice and style
Country music has always been an instant turn off for me. I did however enjoy this listen to an extent given the story telling nature of the songs, Dolly's clean vocals and the short but sweet length of the album. 4/5
This is the first solo Dolly album I had and it was very pleasant. Dolly is clear and is a pretty good story teller. For how quick this album played, there were a couple of standouts, including Coat of Many Colors and Early Morning Breeze. This album could have scored higher if it wasnt so short.
Charming!! A really delightful mix of sounds and late 60s very early 70s genres here. You can hear a lot of influences but it never became too obvious or mimetic to me. First time listening to a Dolly Parton album so I’m glad it was so fun, really perfect for my walk in the cold :) Favorite was absolutely Traveling Man.
Lovely
4/5
I'd never actually listened to a whole Dolly album, and this one was a pleasure. Album cover: B
I love discovering an album of a legendary artist in her prime with 0 tunes I recognize. Fine album, and recorded at a time when country tried to sound modern by turning up the bass, which I always enjoy!
3.5
Not usually a fan of country music by Dolly Parton cooked with this one. Favourites: coat of many colors,my blue tears, early morning breeze, the way I see you. Very soothing and sonically cohesive. 4/5
Big fan of the runtime because I feel as though I have no time for anything these days. Quite a quaint listen, songs are sweet and hopeful and I lowkey need to internalize these messages because nothing's funny right now. I am back on my album generator grind because I'm working on myself and getting my life together. I wish it was sunny while I listened to this. Favourite songs are The Way I See You (!), She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like), The Mystery Of The Mystery, Coat of Many Colours, and A Better Place To Live. Not fully sure about the rating but let's say 4
How could anyone *not* like Dolly. Truthful songs, quality playing, heart on her sleeve. Humble but sassy. Sincere but funny. She communicates both joy and sadness with such simplicity. Apparently she's incredibly generous, too, and I feel mean giving it four stars. But it's not quite my genre. And I'm not as nice as she is, clearly.
uii foht guet ah classic country dolly seeehr schöni stimm. huuuere schöne song. IHREN MAMER HET IHREN DUDE USGSPANNT?? bruuudi was en wichser. my blue tears huuere schöni harmonies wuaaa if i lose my mindseeehr klischee country aber i finds schön d songs sind alli so schön aber so churz ha fast kei ziit zum drüber lese und schriibe glichzitig. she never met a man she didnt like baut huere geil uuf. early morning breeze isch fast nur bass liebs here i am nice, sehr nice. a better place to live wieder sehr country aber ihri stimm carriet au afoch.

pretty good, lots of fun and quick songs. nothing too unique or challenging, but honestly that's fine for an album like this. i liked the song traveling man in particular. coat of many colors was a bit bland but fine enough, though I'm not sure it's worth naming the whole album after. favorites: coat of many colors, traveling man, my blue tears, early morning breeze, here i am
Great storytelling and range of songs
I mean, it's Dolly Parton - how could you not love it?
What can I say? Dolly is hard to hate.
Shes so beautiful inside and out.
Considering how far out of my usual territory this fell, I really liked it. She writes a nice country love song and tells stories that have some real emotional punch.
ah it's great in fairness
Pretty and catchy country album
Classic Dolly. Hard to beat.
Wish I listened to this while feeling the Early Morning Breeze in A Better Place to Live wearing my Coat of Many Colors.
Damn good country music
dolly is no doubt the most graceful country singer-songwriter out there, as someone who doesn't really like the genre too much. this album is pretty fine! mostly soft, slow and sentimental. the songs are great, don't get me wrong. it's just a little too... i dunno. a little religious, a little... just... downcast in a way. i'm still giving it a 4 because it's pleasant sounding.
Skemmtilegur og hátt mixaður bassi, hress lög og oft ljúfsárir textar, og svo er Dolly æði. Svona þroskast maður með árunum.
Nice.
Classic good tunes.
That was beautiful. Her voice control is incredible.
Love me some Dolly Parton 3/4****
A true classic! Great all the way through.
There's no "Jolene" or "9 to 5" here, but I could listen to her voice all day. I'm not sure how someone can sound so innocent and yet so world-weary.
I don't LOVE love this but I do think it's great. As with Willie Nelson it's a bit hard to separate the music from the legend/icon of the woman at this point. It's true not every song on here is as good as Jolene and you shouldn't expect that. But holy hell she can sing and these songs were all written by her - there's a lot of great story telling and poetry, not to mention melody. It's got a good sonic mix of the soppy Nashville sound (strings etc) but also some of that new 70's driving-bass country. Definitely a good listen for me.
I really liked this album. I've never really gotten into country music, but this is a really good first serious look at this genre! I also decided to investigate the artist and I was surprised, she is better known than I thought and I was even able to recognise a song that I didn't know was hers (I'll always love you, the original version). Her voice is so clean and beautiful… I can feel the emotions in this album. What else can I say? She is a good artist and this album is recommended.
Not bad - Im not usually a big fan of country, but classic country seems to always hit. I'd rate it a solid 8/10, mainly for the titular song; Coat of Many Colors.
This one's awesome. Starts with the classic tearjerker, and was worried that it would get a little maudlin, but then it cracks in with traveling man, and a twist i did not see coming. Man, T. swift might have a little musical sophistication on her but geez these lyrics are so much better than the piffle she's putting out in the last decade- God to cuckolding to down home corn pone - it's all good!
A miraculous record. 4/5
Love love love Dolly
Great songs...love Dolly Parton...
Very good album from Dolly's early career when she was still a protégée of Porter Waggoner. Title song is a story from her poverty-stricken childhood as one of 12 children. Several good songs mostly written by Dolly. The song "Coat Of Many Colors" is one of her classics.
I wasn't impressed by the first half of the album, had a bit too many mentions of mamas, but the second half won me over, it was more interesting and varied. Overall good country music. Stand-out: Here I Am
We've had a few country albums recently, with Willie Nelson mingling in with female vocalists Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch, but Dolly Parton is the GOAT and shows why on Coat Of Many Colours. This is how it's done; it's timeless, warm and inviting, authentic and accessible, mixes love and heartbreak and sweetness and sadness all together, and all delivered in under half an hour. And what a voice; I'm very tempted to give it a 5 but I think it just falls short because a couple of tracks aren't quite as good (Early Morning Breeze especially). The title track and She Never Met A Man (She Didn't Like) are so good though.
Dolly is the greatest American
Solid tunes and genuine, infectious positivity. Bonus points for a nice tight 27 minute length
By now we should all know that Dolly is a wonderful person & a real delight of a human being. And now I know that this here album is pretty darn swell, too!
Loved it! I love dolly's voice, this didnt have any of her songs that I already knew but it was very sweet
The title track is probably one of the best Dolly songs and the rest of the album holds up well enough but boy were they pumping out albums in those days.
Like a warm hug. Loved it.
Menuda voz.
Not gonna lie, I was expecting more camp. I hadn't heard this album of Dolly's, but it's pretty good. I just love me some old school country music. 3.5/5
Nashville country. I've only ever heard some of Parton's bigger hits, so it was nice to listen to a full record from her. I was definitely not disappointed by any means. Very strong songwriting, each track had incredible story telling and Parton's vocal delivery really ties it together. Instrumentals were as expected, nothing too crazy but they get the job done well. Honestly wish it was a bit longer, like one or two more songs. Overall a very good album and I enjoyed it immensely. Would love to revisit if I were to run Parton's discog some day. 4/5
Why not?
This would be a solid 3.5 stars if I could do a half star. Dolly's voice has too much vibrato for my taste, and I hate the "stand by your cheatin' man' type songs, but her musicians are good, and Dolly, thanks to her song writing skills, charity work and sweet personality, gets rounded up to four stars.
Straight up the middle Dolly Parton. It’s exactly what you think it would be. Two thumbs up.
Early Album of Dolly. It sounds good.
It's incredibly hard to hate Dolly Parton, unless you're being nit-picky. If her voice doesn't charm you, you at least have to respect her skills, especially for the genre. Similar, even if you don't love the country-twang of the music, you can't deny the flawless talent of Nashville studio guns, and specifically with Dolly, it's hard to deny her skills as a pure songwriter. This is why Dolly has become one of maybe five exceptions to the phrase "I don't like country music." Personally, she was my main exception, at least until I actively worked to be less closed-minded, and while I still have difficulty being open to the genre (aside from female singers), I've never once had trouble with Dolly. She's just that good, and her music is truly captivating. All of Dolly's talents are on full display on this album. Her voice can be transcendent, especially when she sustains a note. The playing on here is out of this word, especially the bass/rhythm section. Most importantly, Dolly's songwriting is sharper than anything. Sure, the title track is great, but then there's the storytelling of "Traveling Man" that pulls you in like good gossip, or the grooving "Here I Am" that nods to stylistic changes to come, with its sonic breathing room that almost gives it a call-and-response record. "Early Morning Breeze" is like a country-fied Joni Mitchell, and "My Blue Tears" and "A Better Place to Live" just feel they'd inspire a small town bar sing-alone. You can bob you head to this, or you could sit with it like poetry – what more could you ask of music? I do feel like the main weak points here are the Porter Wagoner songs. Sure, they're still good, with great performances, but they all feel palpably backwards-looking, and it doesn't help that they slow the momentum of the record down in a way that isn't reflective like the title track, but more like, "Okay so the A&R said you need a ballad here, here, and here." On a 10-song record that's not even 30 minutes long, 3 only-great songs stand out. Those songs aside, there's very few slights you could give this album on face-value. In the context of Dolly's full career, though, I do think this is one of her weaker "classic records." Personally, I prefer "Jolene" or "Love is Like a Butterfly" overall, if only because they cut down Wagoner's influence a lot, or even "Here You Come Again" through her '80s output, though I accept that my love for those albums is more the taste of a queer Poptimist having fun and not listening with critical ears. Still, I think in some ways, there's a lot of hype around "Coat of Many Colors" as "the greatest country album" that makes me roll my eyes a bit, even against Dolly's own discography. But that should not in any way be misinterpreted to mean I dislike this album. In fact, I think if you were trying to sell country as a genre to anyone, this might be your most well-around example of everything the genre can offer. This is a lot of words all to say that Dolly Parton is a national treasure with a ton of great albums, and this is one of them.
I haven’t listened to a lot of old country, let alone a full album, but it’s nice to listen to how good country music sounded before it came commercialized.
- i love dolly
From this album we remember dolly parton got her traveling man stolen by her mom. Poor girl so devastated she wrote a song about it. Fun album!
Great country album from legendary Dolly! Good lyrics, beautiful voice and easy to listen to music.
Surprised by this one, cover track got me emotional, travelling man nice high temperature song Wee riff at start of early morning breeze sounds out of place for traditional dolly but good
This was my first Dolly album and as a Dolly virgin, I can safely say that while I don't like most country music, this was pretty great. She has a great set of pipes and a crystalline cheer to her voice which is so distinct. I hate all the country music bells and whistles (peddle steel, irritating backing vocals, and who the heck is momma?) But it's Dolly so whatever. She's the damn queen. Thems the rules.
Another country album, I enjoyed this one a lot. Dolly Parton songs about a wide range of topics. I’m giving it a solid 4
#12 Dolly Parton - Coat of Many Colors (1971) Country, Nashville Sound Singer-Songwriter, Country Pop I LOVE YOU DOLLY Favourite Tracks: Coat of Many Colors, She Never Met a Man (She Didn't Like), A Better Place to Live, Traveling Man Least Favourite Track: Here I Am
I mean.... it's dolly. What a treasure
As pure and honest and singer-songwriting gets.
Dolly is such an infectious singer and person that it's really hard not to love her, even if you are not a country fan. She is iconic and not without a reason! Very nice album and it was a great listen.
Country Music von Dolly Parton. Das ist wohl die Beste. Trotzdem nicht meins.
Dolly is Iconic. I can say I've never listened to this album all the way through before. I will be returning because it gives that feeling of home and comfort. I am not a fan of all country music by any means but this not like alot of country.
1st listen. When you get over the nails on a blackboard screech it's actually not bad.
Very pleasant all around. Travelin Man and My Blue Tears are the standouts. (acoustic version of My Blue Tears is fantastic, actually). 3.7
Wow. Good to hear iconic Dolly.
I enjoyed listening to this album for all the right reasons…the most important being Dolly. Her favorite song she ever wrote was the title song. A great example of real life's inspiration. Lots of “Momma” in this album. She is a living legend.
I haven’t listened to Dolly Parton very much. This album is awesome. Pretty funky bass parts at times and the songs came off as psychedelic rock/old country collisions. Wonderful singing of course
Seems like I've known of Dolly Parton my whole life but only know her biggest hits. Not a country music fan, would not have listened to this when I was younger but I'm certain now I'll listen to it again. Solid and enjoyable musically, Dolly's voice (a true warble) would not typically be my cup of tea but, again, it's so familiar and she really conveys emotions well without crossing into maudlin even though some of the lyrics do.
I hate most country music, but Dolly is one of the exceptions. Her songwriting is so good. While I don't think I'd reach for this album often, I did enjoy it quite a bit. Very few can turn a phrase like Dolly does.
I think the first four tracks and She Never Met a Man are great, bursting with personality. The rest are just alright. The twist in Traveling Man made me laugh out loud.
It's so clear in what she sings about and how she lives.
I have listened to a few live and studio Dolly albums but never this release. I don't think I ever knew what release to really listen to so I always found a song or two and moved on. Coat of Many Colors really stands out from my previous listens. It starts with a strong concept, if not a bit corny in classic Dolly fashion, before diving into various tales of heartbreak and love. The best Dolly tracks are where her distinct voice comes together with the backing musicians to take you to an outdoor valley where she sings you tales. Early Morning Breeze is the ultimate example of this.
I have never really listened to Dolly Parton. This album was a breath of fresh air for me, the message and the tunes were beautiful. I guess there is a reason she’s one of country musics greats:)
The only time I wish I liked country more is listening to Dolly
Disclaimer: I’m not a big fan of country and Dolly’s helium-infused vocals wouldn’t be my first choice of what to listen to, but I really enjoyed this. Boy, was it sad at times. I felt a little tear trying to break through. Poor little girl with the dodgy coat. Sniff, sniff. Girl whose fella is leaving her for someone else. Sniff, sniff. Extra star for the dodgiest rhyming and made-up-wordery and grammar. “I sure wouldn’t telling” “I didn’t told her” “I reckon I ought’n’t” “Don’t think I ever knowed you either” She gets away with it because of her cute Southern accent 😃
I loved this album for the brevity. Good songs. Dolly knows how to tell a story. I agree that the album at the end lags. I think because the last two songs run together in style. Overall a winner. Best Song: Traveling Man.
4/5 that was nice as well!
Coat of Many Colors Early Morning Breeze
Love Dolly
Go Dolly go!
Cute album; very upbeat and happy. Can't go wrong will Dolly.
I've always avoided Dolly Parton's music but this album has some excellent tracks.
I've heard it said many times that Dolly Parton is one of the greatest living American songwriters, but I hadn't heard one of her albums start to finish before. Now I have, and yeah. I think she's one of the greatest living American songwriters. I don't really care for Porter Wagoner's songs, so alas I must detract a star. Highlights: Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears, Early Morning Breeze, A Better Place To Live
Well written songs and tasty basslines
7.5/10
This is really good 70s country, which is pretty expected since Dolly is a queen of country. There are a few things that I'm glad we moved away from that are mainstays in this album, mostly the "bouncy" bass lines and some of the plucky guitar work. But those were standards of the time, and also just minor issues.
Simple and stripped back so Dolly's voice can carry it, and she does it well. The title track especially is super sweet, songs all about heartbreak and love. A very pleasant listen.
I have two categories for this genre. Good Country and Bad Country. This album belongs in the former.
I'm not a huge fan of country but this is quality stuff. Good bass, good vocals and very respectful of my time with a CHAD runtime.
Very solid. She sings the hell out of each song.
Most of my very early music listening was focused on bluegrass and country, and at around age 7-8, I got a hold of a cassette tape with Minnie Ripperton on one side, and Dolly Parton’s Greatest Hits on the other. I had already known who Dolly was from some of her songs I heard on country station US95 - especially singing with Kenny Rogers “Islands In The Stream,” and the movie Best Little Whorehouse In Texas (which my dad brought me to see age 6 😬), and of course 9 to 5 (also seen in the theater with Dad, age 4)… but I just loved every song on that tape, with her sweet voice and storytelling lyrics, like on Coat of Many Colors and Travellin’ Man (one of my favorites), and so I played the Dolly side of it over and over, until it was practically worn out. I still have it somewhere. So those two songs I had heard, but not the rest of this album. It was great. You can so appreciate how young her voice is, high and clear. I loved Here I Am, also the high harmonies on My Blue Tears. And she shows somewhat bold writing for country music standards as far as the times go, with She’s Never Met A Man (telling truths about hos), but especially on If I Lose My Mind (👀‼️wow). Anyway, excellent album.
Not too much into country but Dolly Parton is a reference on this. I liked it.
Amazing vocals. Great lyrical prowess.
Not my favorite Dolly album, but still very solid. The title track is a great song, as is Traveling Man. Really for me it's just missing that one big track to take it over the top for me.
Good vibe but is not my style
