Reviews (page 3 of 8)

3.7 I'm gonna ignore the 5 bonus tracks from the review as they clearly make the album worse. Impressive otherwise. Reading up on the band's history is fascinating, wonder what could have become of them if they built on it rather than capitulating in self-doubt and perfectionism. In general it's pretty good, not amazing, but a few songs are really good besides the one-hit. Unfortunately there are a few bad ones, Freedom Song really winds me up for example. But in general pretty good, obvious precursor to britpop that I was not aware of.

Fun to listen to

The La’s is one of the most beloved one-album wonders in British music, and for good reason. It’s packed with chiming guitars, wistful melodies, and that unmistakable sense of longing that gives it emotional weight far beyond its modest runtime. There She Goes might be the big, timeless hit, but the whole album has that same understated charm—tracks like Timeless Melody and Way Out are just as infectious, and everything flows with an effortless, classic pop feel. That said, the band’s perfectionism in the studio (and Lee Mavers’ well-documented frustrations with how the album turned out) do slightly show—there’s a sense that this could’ve been even more. But as it stands, it’s still a beautifully simple, emotionally rich debut. Not flawless, but close.

Surprisingly good

I really enjoyed this

Actually great.

Very decent britpop album. There She Goes is of course a standout.

Eén van de albums die m'n vader grijsdraaide, dus ook hier is er een zekere bias. Geweldig album, ook al haatten ze het zelf. Een topalbum in de britpop. 4.2

Enjoyable album plenty of good songs, but not enough great songs to make it a five star album.

Enjoyable album to listen to. There is a lot more to this one than just Here She Goes. I quite liked the songs here although they got a bit samey at the end. Still a good one as for as Britpop classics go.

I had no idea Sixpence None The Richer on 'There She Goes' was a cover. I really enjoyed this odd collection of songs. That this influenced Oasis is no surprise at all. Will definitely return to this one

I expected less. Interesting lyrics, cool instrumentals and some super catchy stuff. Hidden gem

Pretty good stuff. Right up my alley rock

Čuo sam ovaj album barem desetak puta i nikad se ne mogu sjetit ni jedne pjesme osim there she goes, što ne znači da je ostatak loš nego je jednostavno preupečatljiva pjesma. Edit nakon slušanja :jebote ako ovo nije nulti oasis album

Nice punch, catchy riffs. 8/10

solid record, good songs all around

Gonna give this a 4. I didnt think much of Power’s stuff with Cast. But I’d never actually heard this album, just There She Goes. But it’s decent.

Enjoyed this one album wonder.

Pure pop. Still as good as when released.

Pleasantly surprised by this album and I actually think 'There She Goes' is the weakest track (but easily the catchiest). I'm more fascinated by the journey Lee went on because of his perfectionism--I'm guessing he mostly never did another album out of spite and that no one wanted to work with him again. He's not totally wrong about the album, it certainly seems patchwork at times, but it's still really good. I think I would sit this at 3.5, but bumping up due to it's influence on the BritPop 90s wave.

Really good 90s power pop! Each song has its own unique vibe making the record feel very eclectic from song to song. Big fan.

ephemeral AF! How strange it is to be anything at all.

I did not expect to like this album as much as I did!

This album is very comforting. It would be a great album to listen to in the car, as the music moves along. It gives the vibes of a 60s album in a more modern time. Favourite song - There She Goes

Influential indie rock album from the UK that inspired the mid 90s britpop scene well crafted pop songs, Looking Glass has nice lyrics but the length is not justified. Nice tempo change to finish, impressive drummer to not let it out of control. I had heard this album years ago and while the singles are the strongest of the bunch(There she goes, Feelin) it is a consistent listen. Maybe someone shouldve said Lee Mavers(lead singer/acoustic guitar) to not strum as hard as he did. But maybe that's part of the charm of the band.

FINALLY a british rock band

Really solid britpop before britpop came about(?) Loved the guitar work and rhythms throughout - very tastefully done chords and melodies. "There She Goes" I was familiar with going in and it is a certified bop even while being not my preferred style of rock music. I recognize the influence and well-crafted, enjoyable pop rock tunes. Haha yay yipee woo. strong 7/light 8 first listen yay

The percussive nature of skiffle gives a lot of these songs 'soundtrack syndrome'. The La's capture a sound many people around the world at different times have been chasing. The Traveling Wilburys probably loved this group. The World could've done with one or two more, but I also have the faith that's it's been able to find it elsewhere. Mid 7.

A good listen. Didn't feel overly special, but still a good time.

The story around this album always makes me so sad. Perfectionism is a hell of a curse, and clearly absolutely did for poor old Lee Mavers. Still, his struggles were worth it, because this is very good indeed. It feels like a perfect turning point from the 80s into the 90s for me, retaining some elements of the earlier decade, but announcing the arrival of Britpop. Of course, There She Goes towers above everything to the extent that the rest of the album does suffer a bit. I find it weird that There She Goes has become quite such a mainstream cultural touchpoint. I personally think it's got a case to be in the top 10 songs of all time, but it's quite a slight affair, without a verse and lyrics that are probably about heroin. Still, whatever, it all works and shows the power of one of the great hooks of our time.

Enjoyed the album a lot but did want Son of a Gun to be a cover of the Vaselines' Son of a Gun (which would have involved time travel) and also wanted There She Goes to be a cover of VU's There She Goes Again. Still, the Beatles' Ticket to Ride vibe in Feelin is great and are those hand claps on Way Out? Solid album with a throwback vibe worth replaying.

Surprisingly fun album. Didn't realize this band did 'There She Goes'

Apparently a major influence on Oasis and Britpop, you can hear it, but hear something else too. If this's a revival, it's also a 'hey now, I'm here' sort of thing. And for those seeking a restoration of The Beatles, go back and listen to your Kinks. Yeah, this list is too British, but this is a good find.

This is definitely one of those bands I wish we could have heard more from. They came in at the tail end of the jangle pop revival of the ‘80s but have a strong element that echoes the 60s jangle pop sound. Even with that ‘60s vibe, you can also pick up hints of early Britpop and ‘90s alternative starting to take shape. If you haven’t checked them out yet, at least give their hit track “There She Goes” a listen.

Thought I found an incredible new band with no massive appeal until "There She Goes" hits and it all makes sense. For some reason reminds me of Blind Melon. Also confirms that nostalgia is not a modern trend, this firmly sounds like someone in the 90s remembering the 60s and the 70s.

That was a nostalgic ride. The album starts strong but loses momentum toward the end. Still, "There's So Goes" perfectly captures the warm sweet thrill of a high school crush, bumping it up to a solid 4.

35 minutes, 12 good jangly indie songs, plus one of the most memorable melodies of its time.

I just knew the one song from a hundred soundtracks. This was better then i was expecting.

Didn't really know this band other than the one song (which I know the Sixpence None The Richer cover better anyway) but I really enjoyed it. Will listen to this one again.

Jangling indeed. Can see how it influenced Arctic Monkeys and Oasis. Musically Nice and relaxing

4 stars, and a relatively high one at that. There’s a deep sense of yearning that I feel throughout this record, even in its more upbeat moments. I think Mavers has a cool, unique voice, and it feels earnest without being overblown in any way. 4/5

Listening back to it again (twice) it's obvious what an influential album this is. Amazing that it was lightning in a bottle. Mid 4s.

Quick, poppy and fun

There she gooooooes. Cuasi plagio Timeless melody.

Blind album and artist. Know the hit. Pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the listen. Not a top album but good!

There she goes

(7.8) ★★★½

This one got a lot of hate but I quite enjoyed it. You can tell it influenced oasis.

Een paar leuke nummers, maar het meeste was wel forgettable

At a brisk 35 minutes, this album is pop rock at it's most fun. Great hooks, not too dark as we enter the grungy 90s, and just overall incredibly listenable. It's aged pretty well. I think my favorite was Feelin', but many on this album justified the second listen.

Pretty good. Several different sounding songs. Several Beatles rip offs.

One of the best one album wonders. There She Goes is an absolute gem, and the rest of the album is filled with a slew of similarly special pop exercises (Feelin’, Timeless Melody, Son of a Gun, etc.) . It’s a shame this was all they gave us, but at least their influence spread on through Britpop and beyond.

The La's? Nie gehört! Und bei "There She Goes" hat es auch nicht "klick" gemacht. Aber die Musik ist nicht schlecht.

Here I always thought of the La's as a one-hit-wonder. I guess they are but I didn't know that they had a well-regarded album to go with it. An interesting album. Essentially a progenitor to britpop.

I was surprised to know a few of the songs, even though I hadn't heard of the band before. A solid britpop album.

3.5 rounded up, feels nostalgic even though I didn't exist when this dropped

This album gets better as it goes. I knew the hit, there she goes. This album is pretty good. I’m surprised I have never heard of them before.

Surprisingly enjoyable but not sure it is a listen to before you die album

This actually fit the mood and pace of the day. Some down tempo tracks mingles in with some belters. The Las continue to be iconic to this day and for this album especially?! I have a love love relationship with this

I really enjoyed the jangly guitars but damn I wish the singer was just a little better. Spoiled the album a bit for me since I loved the sound. Also legit didn't know There She Goes was from 1988 as I thought it was some rock classic from the 50s or something. 4.5/5

Never heard of the group. There She Goes sounds like it came from a movie. I am very familiar with that tune.

Really good!

If I was alive/ a young adult when this album came out I think I would have been a fan. It sounds like it could be from so many generations -60s. 70s, 80s, 90s. I appreciate the lyrics being clear and easy to hear and just transparent enough to understand.

I only knew the big hit off of this so it was great to hear the whole thing, which is incredibly nostalgic. Went in a little long and stuck in the 60s, but great.

A lot of The Smiths vibes on this album. Favourite Songs: I Can't Sleep, Timeless Melody, There She Goes. Least Favourite Songs: Son of a Gun, Freedom Song.

Heard this loads of times but was happy to listen to it again. Not quite a masterpiece but not far off. Iou is maybe the worst song but even that's decent. 8.5/10

Funnily enough I had the Zoutons yesterday then this today. I've heard There She Goes SO many times that I'm sick of it, but the rest of the album more than made up for it - Never really appreciated them before this.

Never heard of this band before, really took to it.

This was better when I listened to it for the second time. It has some very good and catchy Melodies that I really enjoyed. But the quieter songs were not really mine.

3.5 rounds up to 4. Some catchy pop but nothing stellar.

Nice background music on a sunny day. Lots of short pop songs. I actually quite enjoy Britpop.

I liked it. Interesting vocal style that's hard to understand but the album builds momentum as it goes

When I saw this was my album of the day, I figured sure, I'll listen to it but I didn't have much hope. Especially when the group is called the La's, and it's a self titled album. Really? Couldn't you think of anything else, or at least throw in another La, and maybe a Tra? But listen I did...and Wow. For some random 90's one album wonder, this is really good.

Fantastic album. "There She Goes" is a all time great! Great listen!

I picked this up based solely on the cover and was surprised at how catchy every song on the album was. Then there was the breakout hit. I was 16. The only 16 year old in the American South in 1990 who'd heard the term 'loggerheads'. Guaranteed. And these songs? This is some very tightly written stuff. It all still works for me. I especially still love the way the opening of 'There She Goes' always sounds like it's on one beat and how it all changes up when the drums kick in. I like the magic trick there.

I was already familiar with "There She Goes", but the rest of the album was new to me. Solid listen.

another generally good alt rock collection, this one having a good mix of dark and light. there's a hit song or two in there, but this is yet another case of an album i only have so much to say on... it's strange, i can't put my finger on it, but it feels like something is missing. it's got a bit of jaunt that i like.

Classic

Makes you happy and has that oldies nostalgia

Great album

There She Goes gives me pleasurable auditory frissons whenever I hear it. Like Shawshank Redemption, whenever I light upon it, I must experience it all the way through before I can continue with what I was doing. It’s a magical song that transports me straight to the 90s. Stranger still that it was recorded in 1988. While the rest of this album doesn’t have that much fervent acoustic energy, it’s still a solid listen.

This doesn’t sound like 1990. Really growing on me in the second listen. These guys exceeded the one hit wonder reputation

Sounds very similar to REM which I can get down with. Didn't expect to know a song on here but There She Goes is a jam. Nice short and sweet album with some really cool guitar parts and a singer who fits really well. There's something to be said about getting an album that's only 35 minutes long. Wish that they made more than 1 album.

An album of two halves. Lovely happy clappy jingle jangly indie pop for the first half and the second starts to channel some lovely ‘70’s psychedelia - cracking stuff. Now where’s my tambourine?

Some lovely proto-Britpop jangle pop. I feel like if I had listened to the whole album when I was obsessed with Britpop it would now be one of my favourites. I’m surprised I didn’t, given that ‘There She Goes’ was one of my favourite songs at the time. Heard before: ‘There She Goes’

Surprisingly good

There's some classic indie-retro styled tunes on this album. The strangely compelling vocals sound a lot like Cast, so it's no surprise this band has Cast frontman John Power. Oddly, the one song I'm not that keen on is the well known 'There She Goes'.

Nice nice Indie sounds very 60s sounding but groovy with the irrisitable there she goes.

It was a blend of a lot of fun, established sounds.

This project has a very strong British-lean when it comes to selecting artists that must be heard. This album brings up the question of whether an album must be heard if the artist was one of the first to do it or the artist who did it best. The good news presented by this book is that if a band is British, then it doesn't matter as both artists will be represented. I did enjoy this album and it is apparently the only album this band put out. This seems to be a forebearer to Brit-pop, which I can appreciate. I would have been interested to know where they went after this album, as there is a lot of good here. I think if you take "There She Goes" off the album then this isn't a particularly notable album. It's a case of a good band having a big hit and they also happen to be early adopters of a genre which will greatly impact the musical scene over the next 3-4 years...much like Iron Butterfly. Overall, I enjoyed the album and thought Son of a Gun, Timeless Melody, Feelin' and Way Out were good tunes.

A Tower Records No Risk Disc back in the day.

Relatively generic - some enjoyable tunes but not my favorite group. I do like their original version of "There She Goes" but other than that, nothing really stood out. Not something I'd run back to.

Great but sounds dated

Very good

Fantastic rock and roll, did not know they were the "There She Goes" band.

Nostalgic

Simple music. D lyrics but well composed and catchy

If completely forgotten I’d even heard of them!! Then one of their “radio” play songs came on… overall I enjoyed this album a lot!

a nice collection of songs too bad they did not make it further into the 90's.

Really enjoyed this. Listened to it a couple of times immediately. I can hear some Michael Stipe in his voice. Standouts are "There She Goes" and "Looking Glass."

I really love this record, and this is the first time I've heard it. It feels very late 80s/early 90s alternative to me, and it set up a lot of what pop rock would do over the next decade.

The forefront of the ‘90s revival of ‘60s jangle rock. “There She Goes” is the obvious monumental hit but isn’t a fair reflection of this otherwise impeccable album. It’s too bad we never saw more from them.

Sounded like a Canadian band from the early to mid 80s.

Really fun Brit pop - never listened to this album in it’s entirety - will be on rotation moving forward.

Good stuff!

I knew I recognized these guys heading into "There She Goes". Very 90s sound even though the album came out in 1990. Really liked their sound and thought the vocals were unique and sounded great. Kind of sounded like R.E.M. I would say that the album is a bit too long and the last few songs aren't really needed and should've been scrapped. 8/10.

Bubblegum. Sometimes thoughtful, other times a little derivate of jangle 60s pop.

Good album. Hadnt heard this before.pleasant to listen to.

Pre-Nevermimd pop rock was special. "Here She Comes" is still a classic.

Therse she goes is a timeless song, beautiful, truly emotinal and magnificent, some say its about heroin addiction, but apparently its not, but surely about love and hope. The iconic guitar riff is really make it the masterpiece of this album. Its the most alt-rock song on the album. The rest of the songs are not at the same level, but some are very good like Son of a gun, I Can't Sleep, Feelin', way out and I.O.U A downside could be that some of the good song like Feelin' (who could have been a very Beatles song), is that they are too short like less than 2 minutes for some. Like some songs could have been longer and the album could have less songs but just my oppinion. Overall the sound is a bit like a 60's british rock band and an alt rock band of the 80's. Some drew comparaison between the Lead singer Lee Marvers and Lou Reed as rock poet and torture soul and i could agree to that. Its a classic of british alt rock, very good stuff, it echo to 60's pop rock and british invasion so its very very good.

Very good. Catchy, didn't overstay its welcome.

It's a soundtrack to Friends

Bardzo przyjemny rock. Kilka znanych hitów. 4/5

Pretty GAS. There she pogs

It's got that one song you know. Otherwise unremarkable

Great!!!! Some lovely songs added to my playlist :)

Can't believe I'd not listened to this before, good Mersey beat inspired Britpop, shame they never made another album.

They sound like the Smiths, but better. Less melodramatic and more fun to listen to. They aren’t doing anything groundbreaking, but they have a distinct sound that makes them unique. Good structure, production, and arrangement. The vocals and instrumentation work well with the vibe of the album. This is a nice album I’ve never heard of. 4/5

Tunes with a touch of melancholia.

There she gooooooes. Cuasi plagio Timeless melody.

It’s a shame the La’s only released one proper album, but what an album it is. A little jewel of jangly pop excellence, with the timeless “There She Goes” its crowning achievement.

Pretty decent

Pretty good, I wasn't familiar with jangle pop outside of Alvvays. I like the upbeat energy and rhythm guitar effects used.

Initial reaction is that they remind me of REM but with seratonin. Angsty Beatles. There She Goes is a classic.

Good album, songs I liked the most were Son of a Gun, There she goes, Freedom song.

First song, right out the gate, this is gonna be an awesome album, right up my alley! I know their one song There She Goes, the rest of the album is same style, very catchy 👌

Pleasant 90s indi rock.

Big time one hit wonder here (on their one album). There She Goes is the hit, it’s a banger. I really liked the rest of the album too though, I was pleasantly surprised. Really good 90s British alt rock vibes, and they keep it interesting throughout. The lyrics are a bit cheesy at times but it is what it is. Fun album, good vibes, an iconic song, no major complaints here. Favorite song: There She Goes Other: I Can’t Sleep, Timeless Melody, Liberty Ship, Doledrum, Feelin’, Freedom Song, Looking Glass

Un mélange de plusieurs choses agréables

j'ai bien aimé il me semble

This album got me confused. It sounds like the who but as a 90s band and then there she goes sticks out (great song btw) and then some more 90s the who

Dont know why its rated so low I expected much less from them. I love There she goes but I thought thats all they are but wow. Fun ass album

yeah, I love this album. Rough and ready tunes, never boring.

I was pleasantly surprised, knowing only There She Goes, but the album is really great! It is what happens if you form the Turtles in the 90s and add some distortion to acoustic guitars!

An early alt-90s album, but delighted to find out who created the '90s epic that is There She Goes

It’s a shame they never managed another album.

There she gooooooes. Cuasi plagio Timeless melody.

The La’s seem to be compared to early British Invasion, not fitting in with the time period (early 90s), and a precursor to Britpop. That’s not the vibe I got at first though. I was reminded of 80s alt/indie/garage rock from North America. I’m really upset that after going into this one cold and being intrigued, I looked them up after three songs. I ruined the surprise of hitting “There She Goes” totally unaware. That’s a classic track, and the first time I got the British Invasion/Merseybeat connection. “Feelin’” also gets some of that same feeling. I think those initial vibes I got didn’t quite pan out, but The La’s had some diverse influences. One of them even said Captain Beefheart was their biggest inspiration. Ok, I don’t see that one… but lots of other places they were feeding off of to create something that feels pretty unique while still mainstream and coherent and listenable. And then they broke up. Despite some reunions and reformations, never released another studio album. A shame.

Pleasantly surprised!

Classic there she goes. Overall the album was good tho. The other ones like this are usually one hitters but I enjoyed this through

They channel the Beatles with moderate success.

Only had a quick listen, but I kinda liked the neo-Merseybeat sounds. Maybe I just have a soft spot for Liverpool after having just visited it Anyway, might end up with 3.5 stars but giving it 4 for now to remind myself.

Nice and relaxed album for background. Need to find it.

Better than I expected. ‘There She Goes’ is obviously great, but I also enjoyed ‘Looking Glass’, a weird 8-minute song at the end of the album. The rest is just great rock, and sometimes, that’s all you need.

I really enjoyed this! I listened on Friday and it’s Monday now so I don’t have much more to say but I remember it was fun to listen to while I put a last coat of paint on the spare room

Album 36 of 1001 The La's - The La's Favorite Track : There She Goes Rating : 4 / 5 I was all ready to rage on about how this One Album / One Hit Wonder band shouldn't even be on this list. It wouldn't be hard to back up such a claim. Then I listened again and read up a bit on the band. Such possibility ruined by in house bickering and a creative leader who could never be satisfied. hey never really made any waves here in the states. Their hit "There She Goes" has been hailed by some (who supposedly matter) as an enduring British Pop Anthem. It has found its way into many movie and tv soundtracks and has held up over time. The other tracks are catchy tunes display some worthy songwriting. This is one I'll keep in my folder to listen to again. Recommend.

Thought this was genuinely excellent. Lots of stand outs beyond *the* stand out single. Great voice and gutair melodies. Each song does it's own thing and does it well. Will be putting this on again in the future.

I'm a sucker for short, catchy melodies. I thought they only had There She Goes, but their other tunes are not half bad. It's true that none of them live up to the lead single, though. 3.5

Could have been one of the best British songwriters of all time. Shame about the heroin. Very Kinks-y. Sot Son of a Gun I Can’t Sleep Timeless Melody Liberty Ship There She Goes 4/5

There's no doubt that, There She Goes, is a near perfect pop song that I admit, don't get tired of hearing. It's been used in countless ads and soundtracks for good reason, because it evokes a certain warm fuzzy feeling and nostalgia. As for the rest of the album, it's not the same thing over and over, it has variety and depth, but would it stand on it's own without, There She Goes?...yes. It's a shame The La's didn't get around to release another album, because their debut showed such promise, but at least they have one great song to leave in their memory, which is more than most bands can say.

Bright and catchy jangle pop that takes after the likes of REM, Violent Femmes, The Feelies, Big Star, and of course The Beatles. I can also hear the influence of many other 80s bands, like The Police in "Liberty Ship". Songs know exactly what they are, with loud catchy lyrics, power chords, and short song structures to keep this record constantly on the move and maintain audience engagement. Out of 12 tracks, only the closer "Looking Glass" is more than 3 minutes. There's something unique I like about every song.

Really good, enjoyed this a lot. A few tunes that are classics and I knew but didn't connect to the artist or album as a whole. Will probably dive in to more of them!

Great lead off for this week. Tail end eighties and still good today

Very 90s

I like this album. Favorite track: I Can't Sleep

Tight, 60-tallsvibber, melodisk. Fine greier!

Today I discovered jangle pop. And boy is it amazing. The Beatles' influence is all over this record, especially on "Feelin". I literally did a mental double take when I heard that one.

I listened to this one a few years ago while travelling and was too caught up with the ordeals of travel to give it a close listen. There are some gems on here that I didn't notice before. Of course "There She Goes" is the standout but "Son of a Gun" and "I.O.U." made an impression on me this time around. I'm not sure I'll come back to the album as a whole. I've picked out my favourites. The rest are fine to me but not much more. Personal Enjoyment - 8 Songwriting - 7 Lyrics - 7 Originality - 7.5 Production Value - 10 Artwork - 10 Overall - 7.8

I get why this album is so acclaimed, some real good songs are present here, like the classic "There She Goes". Unfortunately, I feel lie the tracklist loses momentum around the second half, and that the vocals can be kinda annoying after a while. 7,6/10

Give Me One I Haven’t Heard!!! 8/10

I actually like the sound of them, like a U.K. Mike Doughty. Great harmonies.

It was okay. Not really for me but I can see why people like it. It's very focused and well made pop music.

Me gustó bastante

Good album but I wouldn't choose to listen to it.

I think Annika would like this album. A small 4.

In the last few weeks of average and unnecessary albums, this one is probably another one of them objectively, but I enjoyed the almost 60s style of rock revival from them. The grooves had me going. Not a strong 4, but definitely moves past a 3.

Quite enjoyed this. No standout songs but has that overall Britpop sound I like

4.1 - Spunky English jangle rock that reminds me of other outfits within that time and place, like the World Party, the Lightning Seeds and XTC. Solid and spare pop songs with plenty of hooks and harmonies. Highlight: "There She Goes"

The exacting expectations of perfection are often unattainable yet, within close reach, it still becomes a tantalizing source for those who believe they can grasp it. Hearing the only album from Liverpool outfit The La's after reading, for only a decade, Lee Mavers' quest for flawless musicianship allows that belief to be shone in the clearest light. While some songs may fall off the mark and are not what it seems to be (the majority run for less than three minutes, the longest being almost eight), the ones that do make an impression showcase what Lee was hoping to obtain: the key that opens the door to greater possibilities. Unfortunately for him, and for his fans, further burrowing down the rabbit hole became the norm as there hasn't been any new material since then. But we can take what we can get with this, a rather good album that could have been really great had those around Lee seen what he could see. Favorites: Timeless Melody, Liberty Ship, There She Goes, Doledrum, Feelin', Way Out, I.O.U., Failure, Looking Glass.

I didn't expect much from this but I just really enjoyed the heck out of it. The production quality is stellar, the songwriting is great, and the performances are full of vim and vigor. I don't have a solid reason why this is a 4 instead of a 5-star album for me. I guess maybe because there weren't any songs here that stopped in my tracks and go, "oh man, that's a great song!" Seems like a really soft reason to deny it full marks but it just... didn't quite get to that 5-star level. But damn if it wasn't really close. 4.5 stars easily.

Great album

I've never heard of this band, though 'There She Goes' sounded familiar. I enjoyed them - original take on britpop.

~There she goooeess :) There she goes agaiiin~

I liked this album but don't remember the La's. I know their song "There She Goes" covered by Sixpence None The Richer. Other than that I've never heard any of these songs. I don't know that anything is outstanding but I like it.

This one won me over. I don't know that I exactly went into this with a bad attitude, but as the first couple of songs played, I kept wishing I was listening to other albums. Also, the singer's voice was irritating me. But then Liberty Ship came and it caught me off guard and suddenly I was all in. I don't know that I'm ready to give this a five, but it was way more interesting that I first gave it credit for being. I will definitely return to this one.

Really enjoyed this one

This album really fills out that period right before Britpop came into its own. This Liverpool band is closer to Merseybeat and 60s garage rock than to its contemporaries in the Madchester scene. This acoustic driven indie pop is highly melodic and memorable beyond the hit, 'There She Goes.' The alternative ethos is still here, but the music is more rootsy and thought out.

This was... surprisingly good actually!

Good pop rock songs with a “jangling” sound. Not familiar with this band, although I did know (and like) one of these songs. Will listen again.

A surprisingly good album. Britpop avant la lettre and an almost perfect 90's alt-pop album. Will re-visit!

What's the opposite of prolific? The LA's. One album and they despised it on release. A myriad of producers, broke up and reformed a number of times, and just this, one album. Oh what could have been if they got their shit together. Sadly will be known for eternity as one hit wonders and it's their own fault. But what a hit.

Always have enjoyed this hidden gem of an album. Someday Suck by Lenny iz Cool will get the love it deserves. https://open.spotify.com/artist/3Pa6lWWTSLStDQQLH8EMmD?si=cR5vgagQSSKLh0_wJAxbbw

Now if every 80s / 90s BritPop album on this list was as joyful to listen to as this, I wouldn't complain so much about 80s / 90s BritPop. I was quasi-familiar with their one hit, 'There She Goes', but didn't know it or them enough to expect it when it started. Before then, I was enjoying their music. 4/5.

-The starting riff from "I Can't Sleep" totally sounds like an old school riff from The Who. Also just a solid blend of like 60's rock and a bit of punk. Has some cool bass licks that pop out on occasion -Cool main riff in "Liberty Ship" -"Feelin'" and "Way Out" are fun little tunes -"Looking Glass" goes pretty crazy at the end there -Pretty fun album. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and give it a 4. Definitely some fun stuff in there

Ne mogu rec da je nesto specijalan i revolucionaran. Al bas godi

it’s alright, I think i’m being generous giving it a 7/10 I think it’s impressive how they were able to write songs that sound like one long, continuous chorus and not have it sound repetitive but yeah, in general, not the best

Great album, like oasis but a tad bit more upbeat

Great listen, wish they did more. Was unaware of any of their work past There she Goes. Reminded my of So I married an Axe Murderer. "Heeed move"

"There She Goes" really elevates this album, but the rest is pretty good too. Hearing most of it for the first time. Really like the lead singer's voice.

I got really into jangle pop for awhile when my friend's band got slapped with the label in a review. I was curious about the term and found the music to be super melodic and catchy - including The La's. There She Goes is a brilliant pop song but I always liked the closer Looking Glass most of all.

This sounds like transition from the 80s to the 90s but in a delightful way.

Great rock album! A ton of acoustic songs and very lyrical.

This Is a really great alt rock and pop album I thoroughly enjoyed it

folksy smooth and fresh

Thought this was mid dad rock but the last song caught me a bit and so I went back and listened to a couple songs again and actually it's properly good. There she goes is apparently a very well known song and I really like that one and duldrums too. Should give another listen at some point.

Really great alt rock

muito bom. isso é the who my generation ponto final

You know this - as good as it ever was

"there she goes" is part of the soundtrack of my youth, but I could honestly not name you a single other track by The La's. Which I think probably says all that needs to be said about them. Just having "There she goes" makes this a 4 star album - but the rest of it is 100% forgettable.

Mostly bouncy, concise songs in a mixture of styles that is difficult to describe. It is, however, easy to enjoy

Lovely 90s Britpop that doesn't seem to have aged a day

I rather liked this album. Its catchy.

Nothing groundbreaking but just a really well executed album. Sounds like a 90s version of a Beatles album. Favorites were "I Can't Sleep" and "Way Out".

Good album. Not the genre I’d really listen to on my own, but I could see a few songs ending up on repeat.

Like most people, my first impression upon hearing this was the album to hear was "The La's is a very stupid name for a band", and while that thought never left my head, their debut, and only, album, was actually a welcome surprise of energetic pop rock that reminds me of Oasis if Oasis was good. It is only sad that it seems the band could not figure their shit together enough to create a follow up, there was real potential here. Standouts: Timeless Melody, I Can't Sleep

This is a good album, I only really knew there she goes before listening to it a few months back for the first time. Was happy to listen to the album again

Well I, for one, had no idea that There She Goes was a cover song. That's cool, and the original sounds good (though it makes me feel less kindly about the cover, since it's virtually the same as the original). This album has a fun energy to it. A lot of the songs are upbeat. Other songs inexplicably sound as if The Who were fronted by the lead singer of Smashmouth. Those songs are less good. Still, this is a good album overall and one that I'd like to come back to 4/5

This is very good, nice tunes and pleasant sounds.

Fun little album. I was convinced going in that this was a one-hit wonder whose one hit was played better by multiple other bands, but they won me over. Best track: There She Goes

One hit wonder with an REM vibe.

This is a real odd artifact. Aside from the ubiquitous hit (instantly familiar though I couldn’t come up with any context for recollection) I didnt know a thing about this band. A real odd mix of (to my ear) 60s britpop and psychedelic, some 70s American rock but also Velvets-sequel avant-garde alternative, and perhaps more obscure influences at play. Still wrestling over whether it is essentially just genre mash-up or actual invention. Audacious enough for a bunch of kids to grab an extra star.

The albums starts out pretty good. Very catchy songs that aren’t bad to listen too. The last three songs on the album are terrible. I can see myself listening this album in the future.

Hi- Son of a Gun, Timeless Melody, There She Goes, Doledrum Lo- Liberty Ship Son of a Gun is a great, bright and bouncy opener...In fact the first 3 tracks are bangers that get you moving, and without wearing out their welcome proceeds to the next track. Liberty Ship doesn't make much sense to me and is easily skippable, but luckily it proceeds to the fantastic There She Goes (made more famous by the Sixpense None The Richer cover), and Doledrum. The La's really don't draw things out (true to their name), providing a mostly excellent 90's British rock experience that might feel more down-to-earth than the likes of in-your-facers Oasis or big-budget sensations Stone Roses.

Like many listeners I only knew that beautiful single, so was looking forward to the album. So it begins with a bunch of great pop songs, culminating in "There She Goes." That song deserves its place as a soundtrack favourite: jangly, sweet guitars and those glorious, uplifting harmonies. Pure pop perfection. Then it starts getting interesting, a bit of rock, and some more introspective stuff. "Looking Glass" is a psychedelic masterpiece, I love how it finishes in a whirring blur. A bit of tightening and this is a five star album. I wish they'd recorded more. This is a great debut with a couple of great songs.

Although I'm tired beyond words of "There She Goes", the rest of the album was really enjoyable. I added it, and will gladly listen to it again.

I liked this. Very catchy

There sheee goooeeesss. The album is actually solid, probably not something I'd listen to regularly but I would have loved to see them in the early 90's at a small club, drink beers, and dance like an idiot.

Ah. What a talent was there. Near the top of the list of 'what would a second album have sounded like'. Hard to take that we got Cast instead.

Really enjoyed this album, very pleasant

Suprisingly enjoyed this one - an easy listen whilst working.

A lot more depth and breadth than I was expecting from "There She Goes" and Cast's output. A northern REM.

Quite lovely, really, all the magic dust bullshit aside.

Played it to death when I first bought it and couldn’t bear to listen to it for years. Reminded how great it is. Brilliant guitar pop. Loads of hooks. Short songs that never outstay their welcome. The only one I don’t get is Freedom Song. Doesn’t work for me.

One of the great British 90’s albums, that sounds like it’s from the 60’s. There she goes is a masterpiece. A solid 4 star album.

Leuke muziek, 1 hitje maar de rest overtuigt niet

This is a fun album

Sounds like this album was a major stepping stone in the creation of britpop. It's well worth a listen if you like jangle pop or folk rock.

really cool!

Not what I was expecting, having only heard There She Goes before. Heavily inspired by the Kinks, and a good listen.

Great album of course - used to be standard 4.5/5-star for me ..but then in 2006 a BBC in Session album was released with superior versions of many songs. This make it a bit difficult to rate it as 5-star.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: There she goes, Way out

Pretty serviceable.

My primary experience with the La's is the appearance of "There She Goes" on the "How I Married an Axe Murder" soundtrack. I probably checked out a few other tracks from the band because of "There She Goes", but I can't say for sure. The La's fits in with other bands that I would have been listening to at the time that this album came out (Blur, The Lightning Seeds, The Ocean Blue). I still have a soft spot for that sound, even if it feels strongly anchored to the 90s. I still like "There She Goes". "Son of a Gun", "Feelin'", and "Timeless Melody" grabbed my attention. Overall, I enjoyed the album enough to listen to the bonus tracks on the extended edition.

Like most people, I mostly know The La's from soundtracks. I will say though that this album is pretty catchy in general and the production is on point. Very full and crisp.

Bara fín

better than i thought late 80's sound.

Nice piece of 90's power-pop, reminiscent of the 60's and the Monkees (who in turn of course were a parody of the Beatles) Scouse Powerpop didn't change much from Moptoppery and Merseybeatism to this late millenium version, but you do have to admire the craft of "There She Goes" as a piece of pure pop. Also like "Way Out" and I.O.U. nbot in my collection but worth a listen.

More gritty than I was expecting. Great proto-Brit pop

Listened to this album previously, it's an enjoyable one from start to finish.

Roooock

Ein wirklich gutes Album

Better than you'd imagine given the quality of the single.

Was okay, a few decent songs

This is a solid album. It's wild that it's their only album. As a stand-alone album, separate from any story about why it's their only, it's just really solid edgy organic rock with a nice pop feel, and I don't mean "pop" in a negative way. They have a feel for songwriting and song performing, even though I've read they don't like how the album came out. "There She Goes," the one song of their with which I was familiar already, is still one of my favorite songs. Something about that song makes it stand the test of time for me; sounds like it could've been written in the 60s or today.

"There She Goes" is an absolutely perfect song and it's understandable why it is the ubiquitous soundtrack to every joyful moment in the 90s (and the "Gilmore Girls" pilot). If I were to go to Tower Records back in the day and get the album it came from because I liked this song so much, I would have had certain expectations I wanted it to live up to. This was always the gamble when buying an album. Well, I should have bought it then, because it delivered! I love this music. The first other standout song to me was "Doldrum." Next were "I Can't Sleep" and "Feelin'." But there was nothing I didn't enjoy on this jangly, awesome album!

I’ve loved “There She Goes” since it came out and listen to it routinely still, but for some reason remained unfamiliar with the rest of this album. The opening song “Son of a Gun” is easy-breezy and drew me in immediately. Really liked “Timeless Melody.” Seems like I’m in for some nice 90’s pop… There were several nautical-themed tracks that I am adding to my boat playlist - “Liberty Ship” and “Doldrums”. “Feelin’” is catchy as hell. As the album progresses the darker tones become increasingly obvious (“Freedom Song”, “Failure”). This culminates in “Looking Glass” where the poppy confection struggles and drowns as you realize just how dark a circus this has been.

Like it all. Not a bad track on it.

Five stars for ‘There She Goes’, one of the finest compositions. The rest is pretty middling to me to be honest, good just not great. Cover art is sick.

These are some tight songs! Well-performed, excellent guitar work especially. Largely upbeat, fun jangle pop with a sort of indie/britpop edge. Looking Glass is also a killer closer. Grateful to have heard this.

This album grew on me. I suppose people think of There She Goes but I found myself re-listening to a number of tracks, especially all the F’s: Freedom Song, feelin’, and Failure. Makes me want to learn more about this group.

I really liked the style combination here of Britpop and Liverpool. Very raw, but a couple of the tracks felt too underdeveloped. Did not know “There She Goes” was originally theirs. Of the albums I’ve heard for the first time, this one I’ve liked best.

This seems like a perfect album for the transition from gloomy 80's Brit rock to more upbeat Brit pop. Feels like a direct gateway to Oasis, but even Ned's Atomic Dustbin or Teenage Fanclub before them. There She Goes has been so overplayed that I can't stand listening to it, but the other tracks are quite solid. I Can't Sleep and Timeless Melody are catchy but with enough musical and vocal edge to it. Doledrum reminds me of another British band & song that I can't quite put my finger on, though the guitar work is a bit too poppy for me. But maybe it was intended to be more rockabilly like Feelin' sounds like. Overall, I'd say that even when one song might let me down a bit, the very next song picked me right back up. A very solid album.

A surprisingly enjoyable album to listen to. Mostly calm and melodic, the album doesn't feel samey in any place and the lead vocalist has a great voice.

Mostly nondescript but catchy songs. Recognized "There She Goes" from every movie ever. Everything else was new to me. I liked "Liberty Ship" and "All By Myself". There aren't really any standouts but there are no bad songs on the album, and the songs that are on there tend to grow on you.

Fun album, variable quality in places, but overall enjoyable, and I would listen again.

Pre britpop inspiration.

Short and sweet. Good stuff. Will listen to again.

Jangly with lighter and darker moments, great chilled pop

THIS IS SNOOP DOGG

I forgot how much I adore "Looking Glass".

Very diverse but it all rocks! Ahead of their time at some times and a great throwback to invasion rock at others. Some of the songs get repetitive lyrically but they're generally catchy and most are under three minutes long. Refreshingly, nearly all of the album was different than There She Goes, even if it is a good song on it's own.

Peak jangle pop. Fun, nostalgic, and "There She Goes" brings back a lot of memories. Gorgeous.

Nice guitar part, but too quiet voice. Some very good rock tracks, but there are some very noisy tracks on the album.

Guitar, like it.

Great album. Only ever heard there she goes previously but thought whole album was great.

Gotta love those strong Liverpool accents coming through in this album. It’s got a real folk sound but I’ve also read this album be described as some of the first Brit pop.

I reeeeally liked this

There she gooooooes. Cuasi plagio Timeless melody.

Good album, too bad they didn't do more. Didn't know "There She Goes" was by The La's.

Suenan como "The Beatles" :-)

Somewhere between the Smashing Pumpkins and R.E.M. The La's sit comfortably with an early 90s rock sound that has definitely been influenced by 60s and 70s classic rock. It's a shame that they only managed one album however this one album does have a range of tracks. It seems to blend punk, rock, shoegaze and indie. I could listen to this again, 7/10

I've heard them before, but after this I will look into them more.

Good British rock. It sounds a bit old school for the 80's, but I'm not complaining.

This album was right up our alley. Also had a famous song "There she goes" that we know by heart, but had no idea who it was by. Now we know! Very good listen as an album, but the songs at the end were a little too slow to give it the full five stars.

I actually knew a few of these songs, but never knew the band's name.

Has the song there she goes. This is a very fun album.

A solid early indie album. Good for 1990, I can hear lots of bands took influence from this later in the decade

det här var fan rätt bra alltså

Solid power pop album. Really great stuff in here, espec I Can't Sleep and Looking Glass. And, There She Goes is an all-timer. This one will get repeat listens, for sure.

1990. Key Songs: Son of a Gun, There She Goes

Enjoyed much more than I thought I would. Reminded me of Small Faces?

This album includes some real pop bangers like There she goes and Timeless melody, but the rest of the album don't quite reach the same heights. Solid enjoyable pop record anyway!

Couple familiar tunes

I liked this more than I thought I would. Not something I'll likely pull up regularly, but every now and then on a chill afternoon or something I could see myself listening to it.

Feels like the Talking Heads wore flannel but we're also a Beatles cover band. Not a bad listen, there's some fun stuff on here.

I saw the name... name was familiar ... there was a song I knew of them,,, then it popped up - "There She Goes" - and it all clicked. Enjoyed hearing some other songs from The La's,

pleasant

It's actually crazy that this album is the one with There She Goes. It's got a vibe like it was recorded in the 60s but was ahead of it's time, I was actually really surprised to see that it came out in the 90s
