Reviews (page 4 of 8)

One incredible song and some decent stuff.

Cool 80’s sound. Solid music

Thereeee sheeee goooooooooes

Every song seemed to remind me of a different band. Liberty Ship was straight up Kinks. The first track made me think R.E.M. Others were more Beatles. All solid, and they did bring their own sound. I'd have liked to have seen them back in the day.

Never listened to the whole album, in fact I’ve only ever heard that one song. Enjoyable enough but I can see why they only made the one album.

A case where one done is so good, pure perfection, that it outshines the rest of the record

a couple great songs but otherwise pretty unremarkable

Decent, snappy, didn't change my life.

I might have heard the band's name eventually. I certainly know There She Goes. The album seems influential enough for many other bands on this list that it has earned its place. It was a nice listen, nothing groundbreaking, but I can see the uniqueness and novelty of their sound.

Svona ágæt inn á milli, hæðirnar ekki nógu háar og lægðirnar nokkuð lágar.

Þetta var einmitt svona La La. Fyrir utan smellinn ekki mikið að gerast.

light 3.5. Achei um pouco repetitivo

It was just an average pop album. Nothing really special about it. It’s on the list because this was the only album recorded by this band. So, I think people were wondering what would have happened if The La’s released more albums. Would they have been better than this one or worse?

There She Goes is catchy, but sadly far and away the best thing on this album.

Nice and jangly, good tunes.

I hadn't heard of the band before. I knew the song "There She Goes" and had always liked it. I liked the rest of the music pretty well, too. There was just one song that got on my nerves so much I stopped listening to it. All in all, it's not a bad album, but it doesn't really interest me. 3/5

Decent alt-pop, but nothing I would run tell my friends, “you’ve GOT to hear this,” outside the context of this project.

- I only really know the hits from this band, especially There She Goes - it was always the last song they would play at the bar before kicking everyone out, lol. - My other faves on here are I Can't Sleep, Feelin', and Way Out. - Some of the songs don't fully hit for me, but overall, I really like the jangly pop feeling of it all. - For the most part, I also like the vocal affectations. It's obvious The La's influenced a ton of bands... - The album is nice and short, but I do get kind of over it about 3/4 of the way through.

A little gay but okay

I was worried that this album would be a one hit album, at first I felt like i was wrong as the first half of the album actually had some good songs in it. However the second half of the album was just meh. Overall even with 'There she goes' the album is just a 3 star for me.

There She Goes is indeed a bop. The rest is wildly pedestrian.

The La's may well have influenced other bands like Oasis but that does not make them any better than an average band with this average album

[Already rated. Original review:] One great song, a couple of other good ones.

For a one-hit wonder band, this debut is not half bad. "There She Goes" is actually the worst song. The rest of the album is more gritty, less wimpy pop. "Liberty Ship" takes top slot. I'd be willing to give their other records a listen. 2.73 stars for a pretty good one but lame band name.

Overall not a bad package. Some relatively quick alt rock Britpop fusion tunes. The La's released some mostly upbeat songs while coloring a little outside the lines to give it a little extra pizzazz. I wouldn't say there are any standout tracks, but I also wouldn't say there any aspects to complain about as all the songs are pretty good. There She Goes was the only one I was previously familiar with and seems like their biggest hit but I'd put quite a few couple others from the album above it. Simply put, The La's figured out what they were doing and were pretty effective at assembling an off the beaten path album from start to finish. Pretty crazy this is their only release as it seems they could have kept this going. Maybe the band name of The La's was enough to have the member want to disband? It's a good call to list this as a "one-album wonder" as it really seems like a pretty big what-if if these guys had stuck with it. I can see why this would be cited as influential for British acts that came in their wake. Nice entry for 1001. 3.04 stars

There she goes and the last track, are absolute bangers. the rest, passed over me like waves of forgetting

Completely fine British indie rock. Couple catchy songs, but just doesn’t feel essential. I feel like I’ve heard this record a couple times on this list already. 3/5

5 star song wrapped by some pretty forgettable ones. 2.5 rounded up

The only album from this obscure English band, this one has the hit “There She Goes”, which was popular when remade later by Sixpence None the Richer. Otherwise, nothing on the album was especially good, but not bad either.

A pretty low-rent album cover here. You might wonder which I like better, this original 'There She Goes' or the more popular-in-the-US cover by Sixpence None The Richer. In fact, I like them equally well, and to be honest I can barely distinguish them! This is a solid Britpop album, and all the more so because it apparently came out "4 years before the start of Britpop". If you say so, Wiki. Definitely a little ahead of its time, but ultimately just a decent album. Highlights: 'There She Goes', 'Way Out'

Oh man had no idea the original was a dude. Anyway catchy pop rock and the big hit holds up, is definitely also the best song, easy

The La’s - The La’s - 3/5 Nothing overly impressive for me personally here, but the fact that this album came out in 1990 is actually pretty surprising. Based on that timeline, they are absolutely one of the true progenitors of the 90s Britpop wave. "There She Goes" is the only song I know on the tracklist. I always figured it was a mid-to-late 90s song. Maybe that Sixpence None The Richer cover blurred that timeline for me? I always associate the original with Tal Bachmann for some reason. Aside from the big hit, the rest of the album feels a bit bare-bones. It’s a decent piece of music history, but not something I see myself going back to.

a few really good songs mixed in with some ok pop rock

I really liked a few of the songs but overall pretty basic.

The feminine urge to give every rock album a 4 shall not prevail today. This record falls into the same category as the Supergrass record, in that its something I have never heard of containing a song that I have heard a million times. As I tend to always find the case, the more psychedelic the tracks, the more I enjoyed them. I earnestly liked nearly every track, with the exception of Freedom Song and Failure, which I found tiresome. I found that the rest of the tracklist was very similar in terms of aesthetic, while managing to explore many different faces of that aesthetic. Will probably be returning to this one. Standout Tracks: The first five tracks are the best in the album, IMO Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️ (The ✨️ is worth half a star)

Imagine the Beatles mixed with the smiths Now imagine the Beatles and the smiths sucked

A valuable album for its role helping to generate the Britpop era, but in itself a set of fun 60s riff offs. The highlight is Looking Glass, where they almost break free. The better Elastica & Sleeper were to follow shortly after.

++: I Can't Sleep, Liberty Ship, Doledrum, I.O.U., Failure +: Son of a Gun, Feelin', Way Out, Looking Glass +-: There She Goes, Freedom Song -: Timeless Melody 7,0/10

Heavily inspired 60's Brit rock/pop, Beatles, Kinks, The Who, etc, and jangled it up. You can hear their influence on the second British invasion bands, Oasis, Blur, blah blah blah. Album has about 4 really interesting songs, the rest are okay. It isn't bad but something I would just stream

Довольно скучный альбом гитарной поп-музыки. Пара интересных треков есть, но в общем, довольно монотонный и унылый поп-рок.

Very nice Brit pop music from the early phase.

Nothing special, nothing bad

Very enjoyable album! I liked it more than I expected. ‘There She Goes’ is a classic and obviously the highlight, but I liked a few of the others as well. Top Songs: There She Goes, Timeless Melody, Freedom Song, Looking Glass

Alright

ok 2.5 I guess not super fan bu tok

Monsterhiten "There she goes" kommer midtveis. Koselig nok album ellers.

Love There She Goes, the rest is just ok

Jingly jangly, easy-going britpop. Pretty fun listen but probably a tad too long. TIL these guys originally did "There She Goes", not Sixpence

Ok I guess. Is it like "la" or "L.A."? 🤔

There's two or three singles on here that I could agree are must-listens. The rest of the album isn't something I can find myself recommending easily. Is that enough to make it onto this list, or am I just unimpressed by this record's influence? I'm actually glad I listened to it, just to hear There She Goes and understand its context. 3.2/5

"There She Goes" is the single that makes this album notable.

Scattered but pretty good overall. Looking Glass was an amazing choice to end the album, way to go out with a bang!

Lots of influence from Americana r&b and rock n roll

britpop mit 60er-flair, one-hit-wonder.

There’s no way this is from 1990. I thought I was listening to a late ‘60s - early ‘70s pop band with Americana/folk vibes. Like the Monkees (complimentary!) Frankly a little eerie. But the songs are fun and catchy as hell. I will listen again for sure. I do think “There She Goes” is one of the weaker tracks. It doesn’t really take off. Sixpence does it better. But anyway, nobody was doing this particular sound in the late 80s - early 90s. Tricky!

Fun album

I've seen this cover while flicking through the book. Never heard of this artist before, but I think it's pretty obvious that this is going to be a 90s alt rock album. Might as well just get into it. Pharrkkkk. Another British jangle pop album, though I suppose that genre description isn't entirely accurate. This is a bit of a strange in-between of jangle pop and the emergent alt-rock stylings of the time. I suppose that's how Britpop came to be, though I've never thought of it like that before. We're learning things on the thousandty-eighty-nine albums website. Anyways, this is alright. Can't say I'm an enthusiast when it comes to this make of album, but it carries itself quite well. The 90s guitars are quite good and are surprisingly ahead of the curb. There's a dynamism and illustrious sound to em which wouldn't fully manifest in the genre until five or so years after the release of this album. The songwriting can be a bit of a mixed bag, but when it lands it's quite good with some dynamic vocal hooks. The jangle pop acoustic guitars still sound stiff and stale to be, but they're fortunately elevated by the material surrounding them. While I respect the runtime of this album, I did think many of the tracks were a little short-winded, passing by me without much notice. Overall, this was a solid album. I'm not rushing to give this a relisten, though part of me does want to get to know it a little better. I've heard "There She Goes". Not sure where, however. Most likely through my Dad's music library, but I don't think it's his style. Anyways, the song is pretty alright. I appreciate the songwriting during the chorus, and the jangle pop sound is much more refined than what I'm used to. The guitars are layered for a change and there's more of a dynamic interplay between the chord progressions. I like the kick that the electric guitars have during the chorus, too. The vocals sound a hell of a lot like The Smashing Pumpkins at points, though I suppose these guys were the ones that were ahead of the curb. Not that it bothers me - the vocals are quite decent. Overall, a solid tune. Book time. "There She Goes" is considered by the curator of this album to be one of the best songs of the 90s. Bold claim. It was also the band's first and only release. The frontman was a perfectionist, with it taking over four years for this album to release after cycling through an innumerable number of a producers. Wikipedia says this album got in on the ground floor of Britpop and influenced many acts, notably Oasis and Arctic Monkeys. It was also warmly received by critics, but had unremarkable chart success. The zealotry that this list has for Britpop music will never cease to be amusing to me, though I suppose I can't fault a little patriotism. I'm pretty sure the seminal Britpop releases I've listened to thus far are relegated to only The Stone Roses and Suede. The number of foundational Britpop albums are beginning to get a little oversaturated for what this genre is, though I guess I'm not opposed to this album - the points I've laid out are solid. I cosign this inclusion.

I think “There She Goes” is one of the greatest pop songs of all time. I feel the same about A-ha’s “Take on Me” but tried not to compare all the songs on A-ha‘s album on this list to their big hit. But I’m having a hard time not doing that with the La’s. These songs are fine but I know this band can be great and it is frustrating that they never captured that lightning in a bottle again. I don’t think it is fair but I am judging them more harshly than I would otherwise because they had one truly incredible song. This album just pales in comparison.

A worthy place in the canon of Scouse folksy-psych-indie-pop; post-Bunnymen, pre-Coral. Interesting as one of those records which, although genuinely solid overall, really staggers under the weight of its smash hit single. In fact I'd say the La's' whole career was overshadowed by There She Goes.

Thought I never heard of them but then recognized the There She Goes song. The rest of the album was a bit all over the place but I liked it.

Can't find much special about this but there is some good songs and pretty catchy parts as well

It was decent

So these guys made this album and then disappeared from the music scene entirely? Yeah, that sounds about right for the list. Strangely, the music is actually pretty good. It's hooky and well-written, with catchy pop melodies that are generally enjoyable. However, this album has two strikes against it: the vocals kind of suck, and the actual songs aren't very interesting beyond being hooky. Most of them go for two to three minutes at most, and they don't leave much of an impact. The lyrics aren't that great, mostly being generic Britpop lyrics. My biggest problem with it, however, is none of these things. It's the fact that they are literally aping Big Star with worse vocals and lyrics. I get the sense that I could just listen to Big Star rather than listen to this, and they were a good 15-20 years earlier. This isn't a bad album, but it's not a particularly great one either. It's just a mediocre pop album from a band that rapidly disintegrated after making it.

This is pretty decent, but not outstandingly so, except for (obviously) "There She Goes", which is head and shoulders above everything else. If this were "1001 songs ..." that would be a top level five, but overall the album is a high three.

Overall not too bad. The whimpering “All By Myself” is a real low poing on the album. 3/5

Not bad, carried by one song

One-hit-wonder Britpop.

Great stuff.

Another ok album — we need bangers.

Ta viena daina amazing, kitos irgi neblogos.

Oddly when I bought this album 20 years ago, I couldn't really get into it But listened today and its fairly simple and enjoyable Obviously one song is sticking out more than others. But its a fun time

The great tragedy of The La’s is not that they made a bad record — it’s that they made a pretty good one and then essentially ceased to exist. Lee Mavers’s perfectionism, which reportedly left him furious with the final album even after its release, produced one of the great one-and-done stories in rock history. Listening to The La’s, the frustrating thing is that you can hear exactly why someone might have believed more was possible. “There She Goes” is the obvious centerpiece and it earns its reputation fully — a melodically perfect piece of songwriting that feels like it always existed, the kind of song that sounds inevitable in retrospect. The rest of the album doesn’t reach that height, but it doesn’t embarrass itself either. The jangly guitars, tight arrangements, and Merseybeat warmth give the whole thing a charm and consistency that rewards a single listen without quite demanding a second. That’s ultimately the limitation. The songs are solid, the performances are confident, and the record delivers exactly what it promises — unpretentious, well-crafted guitar pop with genuine melodic instincts. It just doesn’t generate the pull that earns regular rotation. “There She Goes” will always be worth returning to. The album around it is worth knowing. A fair three — promising, pleasantly delivered, and just a little haunted by what might have been.

Pretty ok, not my normal jam, but some cool stuff. Hit song "There She Goes".

I mean, There She Goes is an all-time great song. The rest of the album is fine but forgettable.

Albúm decente, no parece de los 90s, parece mas viejo, y no sé si es una ventaja. Está bueno, no es una tortura, no suena mal, ni tocan mal, pero es meh. Si me gustaron las 2 canciones mas famosas, There She Goes y Way Out. Pero el resto eran canciones que escucharía en la radio sin pensarlo mucho.

There She Goes is an all time classic song in my opinion, but without doing any research on this recording or The La’s themselves, I don’t quite understand why this album made the list. A middle of the road three stars.

One hit wonder albums are always fun to listen to. Usually I can find a song or two outside of the big hit that I can connect with and sometimes even enjoy more than their main song. That's not the case here. The rest of this album is pretty bad, but "There She Goes" is so good that it bumps it up point.

Some lovable La's from liverpool. There She Goes is pretty timeless.

Cool album, the impact back in the day would have been pretty huge.

charming rock with some pockets of pop complexity. I didn't pay close attention to the lyrics, but the combination and sequencing of vowel sounds across these songs is sonically rewarding. a pleasant mix of '60s sounds/harmonies with a prescient dose of '90s sensibilities. seems like they were slightly ahead of the curve on some musical choices that would flourish on both sides of the pond in the years following this. 3.5 stars for me.

I think everyone's heard 'there she goes' by this point but I always figured it was from a newer band. Interesting to read on the history of this record, won't lie and say I'm gonna listen to it much after this though.

Another unfortunate case of an album that doesn't live up to its hit single.

Oh so 90's. Reminds me of The Parent Trap (the one with Lindsay Lohan).

one absolute banger, the rest is jangly indie

There is a musical rawness this this LP that reminds me of the Kinks that I really enjoy. I could get into this band.

It was fine, perfectly serviceable '90s alt rock. I kinda wonder if the album is on the list because of There She Goes? No way to know.

It was fine.

Mostly indifferent on this as its pretty stock standard 90’s alt-rock, but the tracks Liberty Ship, Feelin’ and Way out are pretty solid.

“All my life goes by in Doledrum I'll see ninety five in Doledrum I can't see much down for me I think I'll run away to see” I went a while after listening to this before sitting down to try and get my thoughts on it out. I found myself struggling to think of anything to write apart from that halfway through I realised that “The La’s” is actually the common Scouse colloquialism for “The Lads”. I liked the majority of the songs and it was well pieced together enough I just have little to say about it which is usually a bad sign for me. “There She Goes” is obviously a classic and is the major highlight. If the album could get close to that high on one other occasion I nay have been more affected by it.

Out of these tracks, I think I’ve only heard “There She Goes” and the rest kinda sounds like a totally different band. Pleasantly surprised. Good album! 3.6/5.0

shout out to lorelai gilmore

so bored of all this British sounding music

Middling post Beatles scouse psychedelia with a hit attached.

A totally listenable, easy‑going indie pop record that never offends but rarely surprises. Solid 3.0

Actually pretty decent. They are a one hit wonder, but I don't think that discredits the rest of their tracks on this album. I enjoyed most of them.

Classic rock up beat

I didn't know this band wrote the song "There She Goes". I assumed it was an original Sixpence song. That song remains the highlight for the album. The rest is decent and reminds me a little of The Proclaimers (their song 500 Miles came out 2 years earlier, so that checks).

Musically I'm enjoying it, but vocally i'm a bit annoyed with that nasally alt-90s quality which is more a personal preference. There She Goes really is a masterpiece tho. Doledrum also IMMEDIATELY grabbed my attention from the first few notes because of that 60s jingle jangly pop-rock quality to it. This is an album that I ended up liking majority of the songs but not loving them. I think I liked the sound because it reminded me of artists I enjoy more with a similar sound. I wasn't absolutely stunned by the music enough to give it a higher rating. Top 3: 1) There She Goes 2) Doledrum 3) Liberty Ship

One great song and a whole lotta other stuff

Em algum momento me lembrou o vídeo do Copolla cantando Oasis e aí foi só ladeira abaixo

Jangly with some excellent musicality. Solid riffs and catchy hooks.

Solid album but overall, not terribly moved by it.

Oddly enough, listened to this album AND the new Lala Lala album yesterday. The world works in mysterious ways

Enjoyed some tracks

Shrug. It's a great song and listenable album. 2.7.

This was going to be a 2 but I do really love "There She Goes" so I guess it gets a 3.

So THESE are the guys we can blame for the deluge of 90's brit pop that plagues this list? Oh well, I guess they at least get points for originality.

Many people are only familiar with "There She Goes" off this album, but it does have some decent tunes apart from that, and a unique sound to boot.

Ganz netter Rock. "There she goes" ist dsa einzig mir bekannte Lied. 3/5

Intriguing mix of power pop and Nuggets-style 60’s psychedelia. The only real knock against it is the grating vocals, which probably convinced Liam Gallagher he was a good enough singer to front a band.

Little bit boring but not bad. 2.9

Waiter! Waiter! More BritPop please! There she goes carries the whole album for sure. I’m also vaguely pissed that they used an apostrophe in their name.

Enjoyed this a fair amount for not knowing anything about it. It was fun, even knew a song from it. Would potentially listen to again, but no takeaways.

Eccentric rock music but not that crazy, fun to start but more mild by the end

There She Goes and Timeless Melody are absolute belters. The rest, fairly so-so.

Love the big hit from this one. The vocals definitely reminded me of Oasis in spots. It grew on me as it went on. 2.8/5.

The La’s of Physics??? Was not expecting There She Goes to play when I put this on so that was cool

so random they only made the one album and it was crazy to place There She Goes a song ive probably heard 100 times and never had any idea who made it/anything about it

Short, quirky, guitar-focused songs. I recognized "There She Goes" from the more successful (and IMO better) Sixpence None the Richer cover, but it's a solid composition. These are all perfectly good songs, but nothing that really calls to me. Favorites: "Liberty Ship", "Way Out"

Decent mix of styles.

13/02/2026 This album was somewhat carried by their one good song. The album also started to dip towards the end. Spotify listeners: 5.1 million

Totally ok album but borderline filler here

One hit wonder (There She Goes). Overall fairly pleasant, but very average generic, pop music. The main vocalist needs to stay away from slow ballads (such as Looking Glass) because his limitations become even more evident. This certainly wouldn’t make my list of 1001 most essential albums, but I’ve heard worse things.

Boring album. Nothing I couldn't get elsewhere.

It's a good album. Definitely influential, but I think I like what it inspired more. Wouldn't really be my first choice in the genre, but I'm not complaining that I listened to it.

This album doesn’t kick the door down. It may be one album that if I listen to it a couple more times, I may start to like it more and more. As of right now it is only mediocre.

So this is a great example of their breakout known hit being nothing like the rest of their catalogue. Got it. Kind of a bummer. Very velvet underground-esque

I should be target market for this (British, nostalgic) and i enjoyed it - especially the hit single - but didn’t get much else from it.

Of course I knew "There she goes" but other than that one, the album is quite forgetful but still pretty good.

A very 3 star album for me. Didn't dislike anything, but didnt love anything specific.

Good not great, finally learned who sings There She Goes. Started poorly, gained steam in the middle then just felt too long.

2/6/26. Cool sounding album beyond the big song There She Goes. Although the sound is consistent throughout, I like how each song stands on its own through the arrangements.

Muy bueno eh. Un brit pop incipiente. Pre brit pop. Buenas canciones. Interesante álbum. 6/10

Who knew there was an entire album around There She Goes?

Nice album

#28/1001 🇬🇧 My first (and second) listen to this album. Sadly not as good as i hope it might be, nothing lives up to what is possibly the perfect pop song with a dark undertone- There She Goes. Best tracks: There She Goes * I actually prefered the bonus tracks All By Myself and Over to most of the album tracks.

j’ai bien aimé

Sits in a weird spot between the classic rock of earlier decades and the Britpop that would come shortly after. Some good tunes on here but overall just felt OK about it.

Decent alternative rock. A lot bands in the later 90s sound like tihs (a lot of bands I don't like). In fact I always thought their song "There she goes" was by the Gin Blossoms or someone. It was required on every 90s romantic comedy soundtrack. Total one-hit wonder band, which seems enough for inclusion on this list. Despite that, the album is decent, just never much above a 3 at its best moments, which are usually better at least than the one hit. 3/5

Schade eigentlich!

I thought There She Goes was a Richard Curtis found track from one of his 00s rom-coms. Can't believe it is from 1988, it is a cracking little song. The rest of the album is also here.

curti, sinto que no começo tava muito bom e foi chegando no final ue não fui curtindo tanto. descobri que there she goes é deles e não do sixpence none the richer

Son of a Gun 3.3 I Can't Sleep 3.5 Timeless Melody 3.4 Liberty Ship 3.1 There She Goes 3.7 Doledrum 3.3 Feelin' 3.3 Way Out 3 I.O.U. 3 Freedom Song 3.2 Failure 3.5 Looking Glass 3.2 Score: 3.291666667

Hits and misses have it right smack down the middle. Won’t go back for seconds, but didn’t throw it up either.

and if i say that sixpence none the richer's version of there she goes is the superior version

This was alright. Obviously the hit, There She Goes, is a great pop song, and there were 1 or 2 others that I really enjoyed, but overall this was the definition of "I bought this CD in the 90s for one song."

It really picked up after There She Goes! This sounds a LOT like oasis with a sprinkle of the smiths…

Something about this sound is the most 90’s thing and I can’t put my finger on what, specifically, it is. Just like Letters to Cleo.

Even at its most minimal evaluation, The La’s self-titled album secures a 3 out of 5 purely on the back of “There She Goes”—a blissfully short, effortlessly catchy, and genuinely delightful pop gem.

Just middle of the road Brit-Pop with one notable song.

If 3.5 was an option that is what I’d give this. Knew “There she goes” going into this album but really enjoyed the lighthearted, chill pop rock feel of this album. Kind of reminds me of the beach boys in a way.

a little bLa, but overall alright. There she goes is undeniable and there are some decent rockers on this.

3 Stars

One exceptional song and a bunch of forgettable ones.

BLah bLah bLah.

pretty forgettable, but a solid listen

There She Goes was such a massive hit - it is till on regular rotation on things like local radio, and it's a great pop tune but it was interesting that there were several other songs that I was more familiar with than I expected to be. For me the La's seem to be forever a sort of nice background hum to the 1990s, and even now this seems to remain a nice background hum that just never grabs me.

A flash back to alt rock of the 90. A lot of similar vibes throughout with one of the biggest singles of the decade in "there she goes".

I did enjoy listening to this but there’s no way that this is essential listening. I have been finding the list skewing towards music from the UK because of the British author and it’s been somewhat tolerable so far but this is the first time I feel like it has over-stepped its boundaries. Once again I will say that I enjoyed listening to this but I would put this album somewhere far beyond a list of 1001. And in order to keep something that looks like this nice album cover let’s replace it with Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle!

I thought this two disk album was super long but they had the same 12 songs re-recorded about 5 different ways. I don’t know that the songs were strong enough to listen to that many times.

There She Goes

It is fine. There was nothing distinguished about it IMO. I suspect it must grow on you quickly, or that a lot of reviewers listened to this when they were young and have a lot of nostalgia for it. Or it just might not have been my bag. Anyway, didn't hate it or love it. Just didn't do anything for me.

60’s sound

Fun British 80’s/90’s rock

"There She Goes" came out of absolute nowhere on this album, and then the album kinda returns to nowhere. I didn't really like the album as a whole but they did write an amazingly catchy song.

how does this vocalist sound like mr. the decemberists and mr. smash mouth at the same time

This was fun and it's odd and mysterious that they just made one album and were like "welp that's all then, we're good!" like the story of a guy who gets hired, fixes a bug he opened, and quits. Not like mind blowing but a nice time.

I felt fine about this album, glad I listened but could’ve been fine without it. Did enjoy hearing the origin of “There She Goes”! Standouts: There She Goes, Freedom Song, All By Myself (remastered edition bonus track)

I had no idea who these guys were until I started hearing something that sounded really familiar. There She Goes is a great track, the rest of the album didn’t quite seem to live up to that song.

Pleasant enough, not amazing.

***an good album, easy listening

Wasn’t quite what I expected given the only song of theirs I knew was There She Goes. Some of the arrangements gave me 1960s Rolling Stones vibes. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it.

Enjoyable album with a bunch of fun songs and decent variety. Nothing groundbreaking or out of the ordinary but cool nonetheless. 7/10

One great song, a couple of other good ones.

Sounds like bland brit pop rock that's 25 years too late for the beatlemania craze. Their main hit single (There She Goes) and final track (Looking Glass) both feel out of place with the rest of the album. Looking Glass was my favorite track, ending the album on a high note, however it couldn't save the remainder of the bland tracks

Pretty good

Dug the jangly guitar licks

I liked most of the songs I individually but I don't know if listening in an album format added anything for them.

On their self-titled debut, The La’s deliver a tight, melody-first slice of strummy Britpop, drawing heavily from the chiming guitars and nervous energy of ’60s garage pop touchstones like The Kinks, Them, and early Who. The album is packed with catchy choruses and sharp hooks, even if Lee Mavers’ snotty, sneering vocal delivery can grate over time. Highlights abound: “I Can’t Sleep” echoes the breathless tension of The Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” “Liberty Ship” rides a cool, elastic bass groove, “I.O.I.” shines with warm harmonies, and “There She Goes” stands as an effortless pop classic that defines the band’s legacy. The lone misstep is “Looking Glass,” which opens with a lovely arpeggiated guitar figure before unraveling into chaotic excess, but even that stumble can’t dull the album’s enduring charm.

Real shame this is the only album this band ever put out. It's very rough around the edges but their genuine talent and passion for their craft really comes through. It's got a good number of standout moments, just enough to keep me wanting to listen, although there are a lot of less interesting songs too. But just to think what they could have done if they decided to make even just two or three more albums, but instead we are stuck with a somewhat messy and lacking collection of brilliant ideas.

have not listened before i thought this was so fine like it was okay or whatever fav: looking glass

One or two good songs don’t make this a must-hear album. Unless I’m missing something about its impact, I don’t really get why it was ever in contention. It’s fine—just solidly average.

Dette er fin musikk. Ikke revolusjonerende, men fint i bakgrunnen

Nice tight album , grew on me

I was hoping this was the band who sang the literal La la’s on the Gilmore Girls…they weren’t. However, their hit did play on the iconic Parent Trap (Lindsay Lohan era) and in the first episode of the aforementioned Gilmore Girls. The album trailed off by the end and began to be a bit boring after starting off strong.

THERE SHE GOES!!!!! not a bad Britpop release!

= The Beatles

like 3.3/5. they had me hooked for a song but then would make we want to stop listening the next.

Decent enough to have playing in the background. A few moments stuck out more than the rest, but a lot of those moments didn't take a hold of me in any major way.

Not a bad album, quite competent but outside of the one standout track, infinitely forgettable

This was an interesting album because you really can tell that this was the start of a the Britpop movement in the US. It's similar but better than much of the other music, though. "There She Goes" is obviously a timeless classic of the genre/era but I liked a few of the other songs, as well.

Noted from Wikipedia, apparently this had a Velvet Underground like impact on British rock music, where everyone that bought the album started a band. It didn’t do much for me, but was a decent listen.

Not bad at all

Ok but nothing really special.

It was ok I guess.

This was my Thanksgiving album today, so it didn’t get the love or time I usually give to the other albums. I was spending some quality time with the family. Stuffing is the best Thanksgiving food btw, fight me if you disagree. Luckily, this album doesn’t seem to be all that great or memorable. Ok voice, fine instrumentation, just another album I’m going to forget about shortly. Maybe I’ll spend more time with it and see if it hits me differently when I’m not so busy. It was fine, but at the moment I don’t really have much to say about it. Too light for my liking and I was kind of falling asleep listening to it a few times. It’s very passable. Just one of seemingly a thousand of these middle of the road English Rock albums that get progressively harder to write a unique review for. I’m well over 150 albums in now, and it’s already getting rather difficult at times to be unique for these. I don’t know if that says more about me or the rather generic, unremarkable but still passable nature of the album as a whole. It’s almost an hour long, which is a little on the long side for what it is. Plenty of filler here. Most of the songs are forgettable after a single listen and some, especially “All By Myself”, are at times a little hard to get through and outstay their welcome. This is probably a band that falls in the “Hey, remember that band??” category, noting that they only ever made this single album. A few songs were pretty good, I particularly liked “I Can’t Sleep”, and “Doledrum”. There’s just enough variation between the songs here that it’s at least not a chore to get through for the most part, but I don’t think I’ll be keeping this one in the usual rotation or returning to it any time soon. After about a minute, it just fades into background noise. Again, it’s fine for what it is. But only just fine. A 3.3/5.

Wasn't too familiar with this band, until I heard "There She Goes" Only song that really stood out, to be honest, but it was overall a decent album.

I bought this in the 90s and wasn't much impressed. 30 years on and it's better than I remember it being, but still not particularly great. I think a high 3 is the best I can give it.

There She Goes - is just one of the greatest tunes out there. Whilst the rest of the album doesn't hit those heights it's still a good listen. Starts to tail away at the end, and they should have ended before Looking Glass. Clear influence on 90's Britpop. Such a pity Lee Mavers didn't sort himself out.l

Nice instrumentals, vocalist is aggressively English.

Part Britpop, Part Rolling Stones tribute act, part novelty record. Started well, lost me a bit.

The La's are a poppy Brit rock with a nice blend of the 80s and 90s sound. They remind me a little of Blind Melon with stripped down sets. They also seem to have an early Indie sound more popular in the mid to late 1990s. Overall 3.5, good, but not memorable.

The La’s – The La’s – 3 STARS Another British 90s band I never listened to – this book is the gift that doesn’t keep giving. However, I actually liked this one. The tunes are quite upbeat and jangly but never in the style of Baggy and the vocals are very British and muted. It almost sounds like Nick Cave doing a Monkees song. Despite their name (a contraction for Lads) their music isn’t in that awful laddish Britipop style . Wish I could give 3 and a half for this one.

It was okay. Not the best thing but it was okay.

A bit more interesting than I was expecting, but still basically just There She Goes and some also rans. 3.2/5

didnt finish it but what i heard was aight

Started off strong, kinda melded together by the end. Favorite track: Failure

Nothing earth shattering but pleasant enough in places.

Cool album art. 1960s inspired pop rock. Sonically speaking, the production isn't bad. It has it's moments. I liked All by Myself. Although it grew on me the more I listened, I'm not so sure that this album is required listening.

my friend and i always make fun of this album cover. idk we have one sided beef with it. i havent actually listened to this album in full because the las are such an irrelevant band but im glad i got this reccomended to me during october at least

There she goes is a classic

There she goes might be the best jangle to ever jangle? Some other good ones in here that pave the path for Gin Blossoms and the other jangles to come.

There She Goes definitely still slaps. Great tune. I enjoyed my time with this record but I don’t think I’d return to it. It’s pretty generic but still an easy listen.

Perfectly ok album, some good songs and some ok songs, won’t actively seek it out

It's an ok album, easy listen, There She Goes is the standout song, the rest of the album feels very different from the big hit.

I primarily know The La's for That One Song everyone pretty much knows: There She Goes. I did not think that much else about the band, nor its influence on Jangle Pop and the Britpop scene for an album in 1990 that stood apart from the rest of the rising musical trends of the late 80s ushering into the 90s. Turns out they were much more than one hit wonders: one album wonders. The bands perfectionist tendencies would self-immolate the bands future, but the results of their efforts are not in vain: this is a great sounding album. Jangle sounds nice, but it's never a sound I've felt like chasing music wise, R.E.M. aside. Nothing against it, more of a preference for dissonant atonal stuff on my end, though you can tell The La's wanted to feel unique next to bands like MBV or the Madchester scene. Certain parts of this album I like and there's parts of it I can care less for. Son Of A Gun is a weird opening track that kind of shows what the album will be about albeit in a more sing-songy way than most other songs on the album. As someone that likes jam bands and thus long music, the album's closer, Looking Glass, isn't really doing it for me. Freedom Song sounds like an intentionally dull 90s irony scene way. Other songs in between are kind of samey-sounding and not too eye-catching, bad pun may or may not be intended. There are some good positives on this album (aside from There She Goes which is a great song that does carry the record as well as the band's reputation as a whole): Aside from Son of a Gun (which is okay really) the album starts off strong up to Way Out. But that trademark contextual song that made this band stand out and attract influence for the next decade and a half or so of indie music just gets very samey. Like the same pastures of jangle pop guitar sound----it's really all that is. Would be very interesting to see this band evolve more but it seems that Lee Mavers takes the Mark Hollis approach to fame: getting out of the spotlight as best as possible and never answer any questions. I respect that. This was a nice rabbit hole of music to discover, but overall it's alright. Must hear before you die? If you like indie music absolutely, but for everyone else? I disagree.

There She Goes is the obvious standout. I also liked Timeless Melody a lot. Great guitar and very organic sound. The album sounds very british. The vibes are pretty good but I can't say it's super memorable. The random folk song in the middle doesn't fit the vibe tho. And Failure kinda sounds like a car commercial song. Otherwise not much wowed me about it but it's alright.

Very different vibes than the iconic There She Goes song. Unfortunately I did not really vibe with the other songs that much. That song has insanely positive vibes that would make me feel better immediately.

Muito bom, vou ouvir mais.

First listen

Not as bad as some are saying. It does have a kind of Beatles sound to it, so That can't be bad!

ну есть одна песня Зеа Ши Гоуз

There She Goes oli tuttu tiktok remixinä :D Hyvää erikoisempaa rokkia. Moni kappale lyhyenä ja ytimekkäänä pakettina. Vähän sellainen jännä länkkäri viba. Parhaat: There She Goes, Timeless Melody

This album was cool, but I’m not sure if I would listen to the whole thing again.

Proto-britpop

wasn’t really my vibe and had some repetitive lyrics but it had a good melody

Ok. - 3/5

I genuinely had no idea who the La's were until I loaded up their Spotify page and saw that 3/5 of their top tracks were different versions of "There She Goes." At that point, I realized that they were the minds behind a song I've heard dozens of times (though admittedly, I'm much more familiar with the cover by Sixpence None the Richer than the original). Ironically, it looks like the original outperformed the SNTR version by only one spot on the UK Singles chart and didn't even come close to the cover on the Billboard Hot 100. I can't say I particularly enjoyed this album, but I also didn't hate it! It kinda just felt like background noise at a certain point, like the sort of thing I'd passively hum along to while walking around the grocery store and trying to decide whether I want to buy store brand or name brand applesauce. It did have a little bit more edge to it than I expected from the band that made "There She Goes," but not enough to push it beyond a middle-of-the-road three star rating. One thing I will say is that the LP did pick up a bit toward the end, with "Looking Glass" being a truly surprising standout! I also liked "All by Myself" and "Clean Prophet," but neither of those were part of the original album, so I can't let my opinion be swayed too far – it'd probably be the same rating regardless, though. Highlights: There She Goes, Freedom Song, Looking Glass, All by Myself, Clean Prophet

The La’s is an interesting one. Having grown up in the 90s, I know “There She Goes,” of course. But apparently this record is a cornerstone of Britpop- but I'd never heard it before. At first it didn’t click for me. The La’s are an amalgamation of The Who and The Kinks, with some Beatles sprinkled in for good measure. That should be right up my alley, but it didn't do anything for me at first. Then during "Timeless Melody," it started to gel. By the time I got to "Looking Glass" I wanted to start all the way over so I could hear the rest of the album through new eyes (ears?), and yeah. This record is great. If you bounce off of this one at first, give it another go. It rewards multiple listenings. THREE STARS

Good but, not memorable really. Low 3/5

Jangle pop heavily influenced by 60s music

To my mind this is the quintessential autumnal and nostalgic 1990s record. Its a solid record harking back to the British rock groups of days gone by. Most songs have downbeat lyrics paired with cheerier instrumentals. The highlights are I Can't Sleep and of course There She Goes.

There She Goes is amazing, the rest of the songs aren't bad but not at the same level.

This is a new one to me. I'm surprised how little I hear REM referenced when discussing this band. So many of these songs sound like covers from Murmur. The lead singer even does a little Michael Stipe trill with his voice on some of the songs. I don't hate it though. It's better than some of the other overstated Britpop on here. It's not as good as Madvillainy.

3 of 5 God I hate that There She Goes song. It is so so bad, but the rest of this album has some great songs I have never heard of! For that reason, 3 stars.

There She Goes was a surprise. Overall pretty decent.

Having heard only There She Goes, was surprised at how the rest sounded. At times it almost felt like I was listening to a British REM. Some good jangle pop, albeit a little plain at times. Seems like a good lesson against perfectionism, this was a nice start but if the band hadn't tortured themselves trying to make the perfect record they probably would have had a career with increasingly good albums

single angelic note

The album that almost never was. Can’t believe this actually came out in 1990 and was the bands only album. When “There She Goes” came out in 1988 it was really popular in certain circles at our school and a group of us even went and saw them live in 1989 (they were good live but I preferred the two support bands - EAT, and Trash Can Sinatra’s). The band was splitting up and changing band members so much it’s no wonder the album took years to finish (they recorded it a load with various member changes). Although BritPop really became a big term in the mid-90’s it was 80’s bands like The LA’s, Stone Roses, and Primal Scream which helped pave the way. Whether they are to be lauded or share part of the blame depends on your taste of course. This album is alright. It’s inoffensive and has some catchy tunes which atleast makes you “hear” the album as opposed to being background music you forget is on. Probably preferred The La’s to Cast (who sprung from The La’s ashes).

The second half of the album grabbed me more than the first - enjoyed it overall

Never listened beyond There She Goes which is an all timer. This was good though, will return.

There's usually a reason why one hit wonders are one hit wonders. These guys are actually pretty good, but nothing really rises to the level of their hit.

There's more to this than There She Goes. yes, that track is catchy and pop-y but listen to the rest and feel a little more depth.

If only there was a 3.5 star option cuz this is right in the middle where I liked it and I liked to listen to it again but it wasn't quite over the top to add to my top albums that I would want to have in my digital collection.

Der eine Hit reißts raus

This came out during my peak 120 Minutes viewing, and the video for "There She Goes" was in heavy rotation back then. Because that song never did much for me, I never checked out the album. This is fun, jangly Britpop, given extra import by the "one and done" legend of the La's. While I can understand people's reverence for the album—I like "Looking Glass" in particular—I don't feel like I've been missing out these past 35 years.

Of course I know "There She Goes", but would not have been able to tell you that it comes from The La's. There's a lot of strong stuff on this album. It's not exactly what I'd reach for when it's quiet at home, but it is quite enjoyable.

Decent, some standouts.

I often hear them mentioned as geniuses who should have been as big as REM, then listen and think they are a perfectly fine band whose best song became their biggest hit

There She Goes, Feelin'- 💕 (love) Doledrum, Way Out- 👎 (not favourite) Son of a Gun, I Can't Sleep, I.O.U 🤷‍♀️ (eh) There She Goes- 🌟 (star of the whole album) Notes: "There she Goes" always reminds me of Gilmore Girls, it's the most iconic song from that series and every time I hear it, I just want to watch the series again.

Pues... no mal, tampoco especialmente emocionante. Tiene sus buenos hits, pero en general me pareció algo simplón y que puedo vivir sin volverlo a escuchar.

Through the first half of this I said to myself “I don’t know this band” and then five songs in I said” Wait, I DO know this band”. Interesting hear what else a one hit wonder did. This is pretty good album that is essentially britpop before britpop. Favorites were Timeless Melody, There She Goes, and Failure.

Has some good riffs

Pleasant enough, didn’t mind it

There She Goes is a classic and the rest of the songs are go by pretty quick which was kind of nice in that none of the songs dragged. Overall not a bad listen.

Not too bad but some tracks sounded older than 1990. Standout track: There She Goes

Overall: 6/10 Pretty mediocre rock that's propped up a LOT by There She Goes, which is a pretty great song. There genuinely wasn't anything else that really stood out to me but it's also hard for me to call any of it bad. I just didn't really care all that much. Fav Song: There She Goes

It kept my interest, but it didnt do much for me

Somehow, I ended up enjoying this album more than I originally expected. The blend of 60s British pop does work great for "There She Goes" onwards on the record.

Kinda interesting

A bit Guns N roses vibes started off good but got repetitive after a time. The songs had good buildup but it didnt deliver as they should

Inoffensive; occasionally great

The La's, more like Lhe Ta's am I right?!

This is pretty good. Pretty good all the way through. The songs? Pretty good! That big hit? It's pretty good! This is the kind of album I could see myself loving at like, age 12, then revisiting as an adult and going, well it's still pretty good! But it's really never more than that.

"There she goes" definitely stands out. The rest was okay.

There She Goes is undeniable. The rest of this album was so inoffensive that it became offensive. Is this list determined to make me dislike all British music? *listened again & I think I was just in a bad mood or something? This is definitely better than Oasis in terms of 90s Brit pop stuff. There’s some stuff closer to REM.

And I just can’t explain this jangle that remains.

The La's

Brit pop before Brit pop. Fun still today.

Probably worth another go. High 3 for now but the back end warrants further investigation.

Standard 90s brit pop sound. Good but not great

Good album but unremarkable. Not sure why is this on the list.

Very kitschy. Weird to learn this wasn't older than it is. It felt pretty familiar. It's interesting that it's viewed as a precursor to the britpop boom in the 90s, and I can see it. That doesn't necessarily make it great though.

interesting

3.5 stars

There She Goes... el resto zzzzz Nota: 2.7

Pretty average.

When I was at University in the late 1980s we had this guy who came to stay with us for a few months who said he was in The La's. It turned out that he was supposedly their equivalent of Bez, i.e. he wasn't in the band, but he was friends with some of them, and used to hang out. The guy also claimed that he played tambourine on one of the tracks on the album, but it might have been mixed out. Coming from Liverpool, he was an amazing shoplifter. He slept on one of my friends floor and made lot of cups of tea. Strangely, I'd only ever heard the single from this album before, having had little inclination to listen to it before. I'm not a massive fan of the retro-60s sound, but it's not as irksome as it may have been, so I'm going with 2 stars plus one extra star for the memories.

I think this is a 3, but needs another listen in case it’s a 4. Mellow vibes

Pretty average

Decent album, few standouts but nothing to special; enjoyed it

21/1001 :: The La’s - The La’s Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 7 Fav Tracks: Way Out, Feelin’ I didn’t think I was going to know a single song on this album but upon listening, discovered “There She Goes” was very familiar. Not sure if I remember it from the 90s or the recognize it from one of the many soundtracks it’s graced (So I married an axe murderer)… Either way, that song is OK IMO but the rest of this album is very very good. I’m assuming this band was bigger in the UK than the states? But yeah, that song doesn’t even really sound like the rest of the album which are all fun indie rock pop songs. Not much of an edge to them but well crafted. The most I listened to this album the more I liked it too. I said I would revisit, that might be a lie but I probably should.

Sounds like a catchier version of REM. Not bad, but is it essential? I don't think so. Favorite song: there she goes

yoooooooo These guys are the ones who sing There She Goes!! from "So I Married an Axe Murderer". I had no idea until it came on just now. 5th track! Nice.

This album feels kind of like a mixed bag. There She Goes is very clearly an All Timer of pop songs. However, the rest of the album features a lot of songs that drag and repeat for extended periods of time. I think I would give this album another listen, but I don’t know how soon that would be.

I was starting yo like this when it turned stupid on track 13 or so.

Dubbing this album the OG indie. The album sounds like something I would have been super into if I was in my 20s at the time. I thought there were some good bops outside of the super trendy There She Goes.
