Reviews (page 5 of 8)

This is #day334 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here come the lads. An important record laying the foundations for the '90s Britpop and the early '00s and late '10s indie. What's on it? Jangle and guitar pop drawing on the '60s sound, not entirely to my liking. "There She Goes" is a nice light-hearted summery tune, but it fails to carry the whole album... Guess I'm landing on a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day335.

At different times sounding like REM, Smashmouth, and the Kinks. Not amazing, but There She Goes is the standout track, though I’m familiar with a different version.

Ah yes that song that played every time I was in the car in the 90s.

There She Goes deserves its ubiquity, but I think the whole 'Lee Mavers is the great lost genius of British pop' mythology raised my expectations a bit too high for this.

This is pretty boring for something influenced by 60s jangle-pop. There are a couple gems though and overall it's not too bad.

There she goes. I think these are the guys that only made one album? I don’t get the fuss. Very very British.

Quality pop rock

There She Goes holds a deep love for me from The Parent Trap (much like any millennial girl). Everything else was fine to enjoyable

nothing stood out besides "there she goes" but a pleasant enough listen. i might need to re-evaluate my rating system because 3s are catching everything from forgettable pleasant music to classics that i don't "Love"

High 3, maybe medium 3, it was just okay, thanks i guess

Yup this is very ok. Won't ever listen to it again.

For britpop, this wasn't bad. Lots of variety. The back half didn't do much for me.

Pretty mid. 3/5

Maybe a stretch for this to make the list, but all in all not too bad. Some of side 2 reminds me a little bit of the early Stones.

This album has one of my favorite covers of all time - There She Goes. It's a good album.

Fun record with the sound of its era. Nothing too memorable, but it's enjoyable to listen to. The music is quirky and upbeat and the vocals add nice accompaniment. I'd listen to it again.

Might have been my mood this day, but although I really liked individual songs, the album started to feel a bit samey.

"There She Goes" has to be one of the better songs of the 1990's, and is for me forever tied to being one of those "90's movie soundtrack" songs, as when I hear it I can visualize some credits rolling with a montage of a young couple driving off to college. I'm sure if I look it up it will say it was only in like two movies though and I'm just misremembering, but my imagination is doing its thing! It is funny how deceptively simple this song is however- it's only choruses and a bridge. You're never given a verse or any kind of consistent changes outside of that great A minor chord on "And I just can't complain, this feeling that remains". The rest of the album has some nice moments on it but I have a feeling will be somewhat forgetful for me compared to that one standout track, and thus my review kind of reflects that. It's a nice album with one really great song on it.

Didn’t recognize the band or the album, felt like it was just okay and then a couple hits pop up right in the middle and it closed pretty well.

Felt fresh at first. Then familiar when I reached their big radio hit. And then it started to wear out its welcome. Not enough going on here to sustain my interest.

Eh, it's OK...oh, they wrote THAT song. 90s one hit wonder. Not bad, but not worth listening.

I was excited to hear the rest of this after being so familiar with “There she goes” from the 90’s classic film “So I married an ax murderer”. That has always been one of those songs that sticks in your head for days after hearing it. While some of the rest was decent, for me none of it came close to reaching the bar set by the single. Rounding up for the impact made by the inclusion on the movie soundtrack. 2.5/5

This was a very perplexing listen. The 60s-esque influences are obvious (Kinks, early Who, etc.) and they definitely started laying some foundation for 90s Brit-pop. Short, pleasant somewhat catchy songs that in the end just weren’t quite memorable. I wanted to like this more, but outside of the obvious hit…it just left me hanging.

Obviously we’re all overly familiar with one song here, but not sure that’s a positive. This to me sounded like a lot of other bands of this era. Pretty avg

Of course There She Goes is quite the hit. But huge drop from there. Also crazy that it was covered and another hit just 7 years later. I liked it but didn’t grab my ear holes too hard.

Didn’t like this as much as expected after reading about it and seeing it showed up on some “best of” lists. Pretty solid for a one and done band, but not enough for me to round up. There She Goes is a banger, obvi. 3.25/5

I was doubtful, but ended up liking more or less most of this album. It has an interesting spectrum of sound. Nothing totally standout, but a good listen!

Plenty of good, but not outstanding tracks with the common issue of a couple of fillers stuffed in the back half of the album that drag it down Freedom Song, an unexpected gem Top track: There She Goes ( the obvious choice, but still a belter)

They run through their favourite bits of the 60's.

Probably worth 3.5

This project so far has taught me that I don’t really enjoy britpop and this is the fifth britpop album I’ve gotten in the 72 albums that have been generated so far. That being said, I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit more than I expected. It’s probably on par with (What's The Story) Morning Glory for me. Not sure if that’s just because my expectations have gotten really low for britpop, but this one feels a lot more original, more raw rock and roll, and less derivative like some of the others.

That "There She Goes" royalty money must be insane. Good for them if true. But its pretty good Brittish pop rock. Nothing too special other than that song that's been in all movies. But a good enough listen. I appreciate the levity. Tight 35 minutes. No wasted time. Just in and out with a good experience.

Well I’ll be a Sonf of a Gun. I Can’t Sleep with this Timeless Melody playing.

feels warm but not interesting

Hm, other than there she goes, not much going on here that makes this unique. Not sure about the accolades and inclusion in this list. 3* Highlights: there she goes

enjoyable. 3+

Though from the U.K., The La's s/t album sounds like they were taking notes from R.E.M. in crafting radio-friendly, jangley, pop-tinged, alt-rock. Being from the UK, they also include nods to The Beatles ("Liberty Ship") and The Rolling Stones ("Doledrum"). The La's aren't necessarily doing anything new, but they're predating Oasis, and doing it well. The album also suffers from being a bit front loaded. Highlights: "Son of a Gun", "Timeless Melody", "There She Goes". Lowlights: "Freedom Song"

First time listening to the album but have heard There she goes numerous times. Turns out that they can write a few good songs but none of them quite hit the high of the aforementioned song.

The hits are earworms and the non hits are still really interesting songs

Most of the songs are kind of 90s does 60s, which is fun. By and large there isn't much here. It's a fine album, but beyond "There She Goes" (which doesn't really sound like any of the other songs here), there aren't really any stand outs.

It follows so.

I had first heard "There She Goes" on the soundtrack for So I Married an Axe Murderer, which is excellent, and then I bought this album when Pearl Jam started playing "Timeless Melody" on their 2000 tour (when I was obsessed with PJ and buying/trading/downloading/burning every PJ bootleg I could get my hands on.) This is a good album but its novelty has kind of worn off for me. It has some classic tunes though.

S’ok. There she goes again!

THERE SHE GOES AGAIN........ This was fine - nothing special but not bad either. Definitely a one-hit wonder!

The La's music is reminiscent of bands from the first British Invasion. When I first heard "There She Goes", I thought it was Herman's Hermits or The Dave Clark Five.

One classic song - the rest fade into the background a bit.

Album art: 2

Pretty meh.

Fun and poppy, but also very mid. I’ll round up.

Enjoyed it.

The Celtics are the sorriest group of absolute fucking losers I’ve ever seen in my life. This album was ok

Ah, it’s the “There She Goes” guys. This was the only album they technically ever released? Noel Gallagher lists it as one of his favorite albums… interesting. It’s not bad! Might deserve more listens, I like the sorta ‘60s throwback feeling it has at its core. Some of the songs would benefit from shorter runtimes, but the album is still a pleasant enough listen throughout.

+1 for There She Goes, underwhelmed by the rest.

Not bad, but there was really only one really good song. The rest was just ok. 3/5

Here she goes är ju en fantastisk låt. Synd att alla låtar inte håller den klassen.

Rounded up because of There She Goes

There are a lot of strong opinions in favor of this album on here. I find it to be very competent and reasonably enjoyable. I like the album cover.

not sure why this is included here, its not bad or anything, just a little too milquetoast. There She Goes is the best song here, and unfortunately it doesnt carry the album.

The fucking “There She Goes” album?!? Another example of author bias. Here are some albums that could easily replace this one on future revisions of this list Mind Control by Stephen Marley Paraiso by Haroumi Hosono Physical Thrills by Silversun Pickups The Spirit of Apollo by N.A.S.A.

Standard pop/rock. Nothing sticks out, but nothing is offensively bad either.

From a challenging listen to an easy listen! This was welcomed with open arms, especially since I’ve heard the lead single from this album numerous times. It waned towards the end, but hoping to get a vinyl copy of this.

6/10. This sounds like a very standard jangle pop album. I don't have much to say here. "There She Goes" is a fine song, by the way.

Middle of the road British pop rock. Would give it a 2 but I recognized 1 song on this album that I enjoy.

Had no idea this was from the 90s

It’s fine

there she goes is a bop - but otherwise nothing really stood out for me here

You know. I can see why it's on here. I enjoyed it. I'm going to listen to it more. It was a nice, versatile album. It was pretty fun. 3/5

It’s a 3. It’s a 3, again.

This album was pretty decent, there she goes is a good song

Pretty good, getting a little tired of all these British alt rock albums, but this one at least had some really great guitar. 3.2/5 Fav song: There She Goes

Not bad but not great. Sounded like a mix of the Smith's and REM.

Onnistunut levy, on oikeasti koottu onnistuneimpia biisejä yhteen. Hittibiisi ei kannattele tätä yksinään. Ei liian keveä, ei liian raskas. Kuitenkin jään kaipaamaan jotain lisänostetta, vielä enemmän keskiverron yläpuolelle vievää.

Bändi on kerännyt A-puolelle valmiita, tehokkaita rock- ja pop-muotoja miellyttävinä variaatioina. B-puoli on aito B-puoli. Lopputulos: Levy.

I like a bit of Britpop although The Las is a little 60s sounding I think, and not a super consistent record all the way through. Some great singles and forgettable fillers, although I think it's worth 3* because they do sound quite distinctive

Not bad. No comments

Very 90s. The singer kinda reminds me of Micheal Stipe. There were some good songs on here. I liked it.

Nice tunes. 1 big hit

Not too bad. I'm surprised they only did one album. Was actually pretty good. I'd've liked to hear what they could've done.

Some songs were cool but this was a bit too long.

if there's anything that The Thief and the Cobbler taught me, it's that perfectionism is a fool's errand and a producer's nightmare. reading about the recording of The La's self-titled debut (and i guess final album) kind of irritates me, because Lee Mavers's discontent with the record makes sense. it just doesn't sound like the best it could be, but i don't really think the issue is with the production. rather, it's the inclusion of all the dumb skiffle songs. were "Liberty Ship" or "Freedom Song" vital to the sound of the group, or were Mavers and Power simply being stubborn about these half-baked tracks? otherwise, the album's sound is eerily prescient of the sound that would hit British indie in the coming decade, taking the contemporary sounds of jangle pop and filling it with 60's nostalgia and sunshine. there are some really incredible tracks on here, but as a whole i think the album is just missing that je ne sais quoi that would make it an all-timer. at the very least, The La's have bragging rights for striking gold, even though it'd take a couple years for the gold rush to begin.

A very average, nothing spectacular, kind of album

Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Reminded me of the 90s.

This was fun. I kind of feel like this is only on the list because of "There She Goes" and "Doledrome," but I still enjoyed it. The alt rock, blues inspired sound was fun and easy to groove to.

I'll be keeping it for tracks two and five because of how hard they hit my Nostalgia button. Those two tracks gave me flashbacks to drinking in the bushes under the power lines in the 90s while listening to a Boombox tuned to 102.1 FM

Liverpool ahh. I like it though. Jangly and even distorted at times which works well. Not much else to say. Favourite songs: Son of a gun, I can't sleep, Liberty ship, there she goes, looking glass. Overall around 6/10

decent. nothing i’ll revisit

01) Son of a Gun - 7,0 02) I Can't Sleep - 7,0 03) Timeless Melody - 7,0 04) Liberty Ship - 6,5 05) There She Goes - 10,0 06) Doledrum - 7,0 07) Feelin - 6,5 08) Way Out - 7,0 09) I.O.U. - 7,0 10) Freedom Song - 6,5 11) Failure - 6,5 12) Looking Glass - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,08 (71/100) Current ranking: 276/469

High 3, There She Goes is a banger everything else was just ok

There She Goes always makes me happy. I wish the whole album was full of songs closer to that one. I liked this well enough for one listen through, but I'm not sure I'll reach for it again after this.

Fav: There She Goes Least Fav: Way Out For being perfectionists, the end result is just so…nothing outside a couple good songs

Better than the average brit-pop band. (I see their interesting relation to this genre actually.) I really don't like that one song though. (13 known/26 new)

There She Goes is so good but the rest of the album is nothing like it?? Disappointing.

A great album. Folk country soul and with an outsider point of view

I feel very middle of the road about this album. It's alt rock without a twist. Is it exciting? Not really. Is it offensively bad? Not really. It kind of just exists. It's quality background music but nothing I can jam out to.

Forgettable mid british new wave again. Stand-out: Way Out

I actually listened to this album twice within the 24 hours, one in the afternoon on the train and one during midnight cruising home. It fits both vibes very well... it's a very fun album, an album to bop your head to! It's just a solid album through and through, however I'm not sure if I would listen to any of the songs in isolation. Fav song: Feelin'

You know when you're listening to an album and then suddenly one songs comes on and you go "Ooooooh! There's the band who made that song!"? Well what's what I said out loud when There She Goes came on. Ultimately, its a pretty good rock project, parts of it reminded me of the Black Keys, but also not really something I'll return to a whole lot. Fave Songs - Son Of A Gun, There She Goes, Feelin', Way Out

Pretty good. Might be a 4. May need another listen. 3 for now.

No bad but not something I’m turning on

The indie artists of the 90s and 00s love this album. Noel Gallagher raves about it. I have never understood the hype. There she goes is a fantastic tune but it doesn’t make an album. That said let’s give it another listen. It’s been 20 years!! After another listen this is a fun / average Britpop album with 1 great song on it. I also enjoyed IOU and Freedom song. Its a better album than I originally thought!! Favourite song: There she goes Least favourite: Nothing is bad, there are just quite a few average tunes on it. Way out is a good example of that. Average music and average story telling lyrics Album artwork: It’s an iconic album cover

You can hear it pave the way for the 90s british rock sound with each song. Anyways here's Wonderwall but 5 years too soon to escape being a one hit wonder.

It's no Orange Juice, but it's not bad. I found it a little boring though

Solid album. Nothing stands out, no crazy message, just nice "good-time" music. I'd listen again, and I couldn't see myself skipping any of the songs if they came on, but I also couldn't see myself seeking their music out. 3.5 out of 5

The self-titled debut from The La’s is one of those albums that feels like a snapshot of a moment—a raw, nostalgic burst of indie brilliance that leaves you wondering what might’ve been if they’d continued creating music together. It’s a solid record with some truly memorable moments, though it doesn’t fully deliver on its potential. One thing that’s undeniable about The La’s is how well the band captures a timeless, jangly guitar sound. Tracks like “There She Goes” are undeniable earworms, with crisp, bright guitar work that feels both nostalgic and refreshing. There’s an effortless charm to the instrumentation across the album, blending elements of folk, rock, and Britpop with ease. The rhythm section keeps everything tight and grounded, leaving room for the melodies to shine. Vocally, Lee Mavers delivers a raw, unpolished performance that suits the album’s stripped-back aesthetic. His voice carries a kind of wistful vulnerability that works beautifully on tracks like “Timeless Melody.” There’s a sincerity in his delivery that draws you in, making even the simplest lyrics feel genuine and heartfelt. However, the album’s production is where things start to falter for me. The production feels overly polished, almost sterile at times, which dampens the organic energy that these songs seem to be striving for. Tracks that should feel lively and raw instead come across as slightly muted, as if their edges have been sanded down too much. Another issue is the album’s lack of variety. Many of the tracks, while individually solid, start to blur together after a while. The jangly, acoustic-driven sound is lovely, but it doesn’t evolve much across the record, leaving the second half feeling repetitive. The La’s is a frustrating listen because you can hear the brilliance bubbling just under the surface. When it’s good, it’s really good – tracks like “There She Goes” and “Timeless Melody” are proof of that. But as an album, it doesn’t fully live up to its potential.

This would hit so hard if I lived in Boston and was ten years older. Unfortunately led to the formation of oasis. so I dock one star. I was thinking of a cute guy while listening to this though so it gets the star back

7/10 I’ll be honest the immediate thought I had when I first heard the vocalist was “wow this guy kinda sucks”, then I learned he was British and it all made sense. It’s undeniably a huge influence on British Rock and Pop music for the next decades, and it’s quite a nice and fun listen. This is completely bigoted on my part but I can see why this sorta turns off Americans and mainly gets its flowers from the UK, any music that doesn’t mask its Britishness and isn’t the best music of all time will be spat out by most audiences outside of the UK (as we can see from Robbie Williams currently having a $135 million dollar Biopic bomb horribly), and truthfully that’s my biggest bone to pick with this album. It’s pretty decent, but I can’t take anything from it other than “it’s a good time”. WHALE AT LEASHT ARE SHCHOOLS DOUN’T LOOK LOIKE COLL OV DEWCHY

Decent, I can see where Oasis and groups of that Generation came from. Some solid songs and some monotonous songs.

The las isch bi mir zimli dra verbigange.

it kind of sits between not great, not bad - it just exists and it was enjoyable to listen to but nothing special. the last track “looking glass” was great however, and i think my favourite of the album.

There she goes is a classic, the rest is fun but nothing particularly interesting

I've only ever heard "There she goes" by The La's, and that was solely through a compilation album (or so I thought, but it turns out that the 1990 "Happy Daze" album didn't actually include this song, so I'm not entirely sure where I heard them back in the day). Regardless, I was curious to hear the rest of their (only) album. I'm not sure exactly what I expected, but it kind of feels like "There she goes" was done by a completely different band from the rest of an album of seemingly-Beatles-impersonators (with the occasional foray into Doors sounds, e.g. "Freedom song"). Ah well. A fine album, but not all that interesting or distinctive, although I *will* say that it was a pleasant surprise that their sound wasn't yet another Madchester album.

Wow, lots of influences here, both on them and on others. I can hear REM, Oasis, The Smiths, The Monkees...

Fun and easy and kind of odd in a pleasant way. Definitely emulating antiquity in a talented way. Pretty good.

There She Goes is the big hit off of this, but the record is otherwise okay.

Good sounding guitar and some good folk-like songs

Interesante la música que proponen, pero no deja de ser lo mismo.

I of course loved their classic "there she goes"; the rest was pretty typical early 90s rock, enjoyable but not particularly memorable

“There she goes” gets an extra star. The song itself is iconic. Most of the rest of the album is something I would put in for background music while cleaning house, but not really pay any attention to it.

Nice early 90s folk pop, definitely listenable

Though you can hear the connections to three different decades of British musicians following this (Oasis, AM, and Fontaines DC all referenced), I did not love this album as much as I hoped. Definitely good but needs to be revisited

Adequate. I'm beginning to hate british people tho I'm ngl.

Schönes Album.

Fand den Sound ganz gut und interessant. One Hit Wonder Band. Songs der Playlist hinzugefügt: Keine

I don’t have many actual thoughts about the album but that’s because whenever I was listening to it I enter Main Character In An Indie 90s Romcom Flow State.

Three stars only because I can hear the influence this had on some of my favorite music in the coming decade.

Solid. One great song, some mid, but I wasn't expecting that much from the closer and honestly it was pretty good.

The Who: 90's edition Fav Track: There She Goes

3.3 1x

I enjoyed being recommended this but I doubt there's much I'd come back for. Felt like I was watching a sofa advert at one point...

My memory of this was that it was a pioneering breakthrough at the time but after a fresh listen it is a good album with a smattering of some great tunes

Pre-Brit-Pop

There were a few good tracks on here. I really liked the opener Son of a Gun, and There She Goes is a great tune. But it really started to drag for me in the second half of the album. Overall, I'd say good-not-great, but worth listening to again.

This doesn't attract me...Sounds britpop, but I've lost interests in britpop. Could be more attractive at any other time of my life, just not now.

Rock alternativo. Recuerdan a REM en alguna canción. Ni fu ni fa.

it was a nice album but it didn't leave me a big impression

There she goes is really an outlier on this album. The rest is kind of jangly emo brit pop.

This is fine. The songs are mostly short and to the point. "Timeless Melody" kinda rocks. His voice is kinda rough sounding, not necessarily bad, just trying to think of a description. I've heard better jangle pop but not bad. Highlights: "Timeless Melody" & "There She Goes". 3.5 stars.

I like it, but doesn't find it particularly essential. 3.5 stars

Decent proto-Britpop album. There She Goes kind of overshadows everything else. 3 Stars.

More like the La Di Da’s. Has one awesome Britpop-influencing ‘1001 songs you must hear’ type song in There She Goes but nothing else comes close to matching it so the album is overall quite the disappointment. Very sixties revivalist and if it was released back then it would have been called There She Goes and 11 Other Songs.

Very nice but not essential

The album's fine but not especially memorable for me. "There She Goes" is good but not great.

I think this album's rep has been boosted by the mystique of being a one-and-done... As influential as it may have been in its era, was it really that different to what, say, R.E.M. were doing at that time? Also, comparisons to The Beatles are a bit of a stretch... a fairer comparison might be to the Scouse indie bands that followed, like The Coral. Still, it's a solid if unspectacular set of tunes that, I can confirm, goes down well on a sunny autumn day. Feelin' must be one of the great sub-2 minute serotonin shots. 3.5

Gilmore Girls Jam, but the other stuff didn't stick out.

wasn’t sure about this album at first but as it went on I started to enjoy it more. A couple tracks I remember from the 90s.

This feels like such an important album: you can hear its influence in so much 90s and early 00s British music especially bands like the Coral, Big Differents and Yeboah. It also feels like a real exercise in pure songwriting. However, I just didn’t find it that interesting. Maybe I wasn’t in the moo, but I can’t imagine listening to it much in the future.

I have never listened to this album before. I am familiar with the song, "There She Goes" which is okay. I can hear influences from The Beatles and The Kinks. Unlike those bands, this seems a little too redundant and "poppy" for my tastes. It's okay.

I've tried to get into this album before because it seems like it would be the kind of thing I like. It doesn't do anything for me though. Not bad though, just uninteresting.

Energetic 3

Pretty music. Some pretty good songs and some pretty OK songs.

Another good, but not great album. Mostly forgettable.

Some good stuff but basically background sound.

Hätte nicht gedacht, dass das aus 1990 ist. Sehr gitarrig, dabei nicht zu rockig. Ganz gut. 3,1

This is a pretty fun a low stakes indie album, as most jangle pop tends to be. I have no idea if this is influential of significant in any way, as I have hardly every heard about it outside the discourse around this book. Key tracks: There She Goes Feelin'

Not much to say, enjoyed a few of the songs on here and from what I’ve read this album was pretty inspirational to British music in the 90s but apart from there she goes again (which sounds totally different from the rest of the album) the songs here are groovy but neither remarkable nor memorable. Competently made background music. Good for pacifying Gen X Brits.

pleasant

I could see these folks making some real hits but I didn’t find them here. My favorite was “Doledrum”

Not bad

Never heard this album before. It was pretty good.

Trying too hard to be the Beatles

Sounded familiar to something but I cannot put my finger on it.

I really really wanted to like this. It has a cult following in Manchester and I know the story about the band and the production of the album, but it's just a one-hit wonder album (especially when There She Goes is wildly different to the rest of the album)

This album was just ok. Did not understand why it was a must-listen aside from the one hit song I knew.

I forgot I had heard of them before, just with their one hit of There She Goes. I like most everything else on the album more than that song now that I've heard the whole thing. Also hearing the album as a whole, it almost sounded like they were going for being a newer version of Tommy era The Who, in a good way.

One pretty good song and a very average album to follow. It's actually quite frustrating how big the discrepancy is between There She Goes and the rest. It's not something I'm going to remember for long (two days max).

Ĺee Mavers had a reputation for perfectionism which caused major difficulties in the recording of this album. Rhyming 'knowledge' with 'porridge' does not attest to this. It's OK- There She Goes is obviously a belter, but the rest is bland skiffle-inflected indie pop.

Pretty mid. One of the best and most iconic songs in \"There She Goes,\" but other than that, there is a bunch of misses.

There She Goes Feelin'

Fine. Not likely to seek it out.

Interesting, folky at parts

A few great songs but some had a rhythm I couldn’t quite get in to

They sound like the period they came from

1 hit with There She Goes, but generally enjoyable sounding start to the 90's for a more refined British pop

Muy bueno

some good songs but the album felt a bit all over the place

forgettable pop

Great single, the rest of the material was workmanlike but unremarkable.

Decent—of course the best song is their hit.

A totally competent, but mostly forgettable-to-me acoustic pop/rock album that fails to reach the heights of its juggernaut single, There She Goes. But then- not many songs from that era can say that they reached those heights either. Was really torn between a two and a three star rating because I think this is more of a 2.5 star for my taste, but TSG is such a banger that I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt, though I don’t see myself revisiting any tracks on this outside of the aforementioned and also Freedom Song which kinda ripped.

One hit wonder alert. There she goes again. Interesting album. 3 stars for me

Not bad. But another one where one song carried most of the album.

Obviously some might say one hit wonders but I would throw Timeless melody in there as well, so two hit wonders, which is better than most. I thought I liked this album more but now not so much.

Liked it! Good 90s memories

I am so sick of all the British rock on this list. But it was alright

Nice album but nothing special. There she goes the obvious stand out. I felt like it could have been / should have been… better

I think I would like this if I was into poppy 90s alternative. It's catchy and pleasant.

This album was pretty good. It honestly was just too long and felt like it was drawn out a bit too much. The first half is nice, it's consistent. It feels like the beginnings of good 90s music - impressive for 1989. The end feels a lot like The Beatles. Overall, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

Итс олрайт, но как бы немного задерживается больше положенного. Лучшая песня - There She Goes.

When this first started I thought, who in the world thinks this needs to be listened too, and then There She Goes came on and I realized I'm being forced to listen to a whole album from a one hit wonder... The second half of the album was better than the first. 2.5/5

I could see why some people like this, but to me it sounds kind of like a late 80’s version of the Monkees. That’s not exactly a negative, but it’s not much of a compliment, either. I’m going with three stars, but it’s more of a two and a half.

The La's were around for a long time, yet they only released one single album. They're a 90s one-hit wonder, so I'm always going to compare them to my favorite one-hit wonders of the 90s, Spin Doctors (Pocketful of Kryptonite should have been on this list!). "There She Goes" is a wonderful song, and there are other very strong songs here. But most of the album is just okay, not bad but not very memorable.

I tried to like this album, but I came away from it not finding a connection after two listens. It may be generic feeling because it paved the way for other bands to build on their sound to create something even better, but if so I can't see it. 3/5 because maybe a 3rd or fourth listen will have me fall in love at a later date.

This was pretty good. The single wasn’t like any of the rest of the album, but it worked out okay. This sounds like R.E.M., Soul Coughing, and Dave Matthew’s Band all in one. That’s good but not enough for me to place on the top 100 or even 200 greatest albums list.

Sounds familiar yet not familiar at the same time

3/5 - I enjoyed! standout tracks: - there she goes 5/5 - clean prophet 4/5 - over 5/5 - I LOVE THIS ONE

prime dad rock, but not overplayed lol. I cant beleive its 1990 it feels like 1965. fine work music. 3. if i had to.

Rally 2.5 but I’ll round up

One good song, and a lot of jangly guitars. Worse bands that this have done a lot more with less...

It was okay, maybe another listen sometime and I would pick up on it some more. Mostly just like there she goes

Mid. Although fun its Definitively not a top 1,000 album.

A couple of decent tracks

Everyone knows There She Goes, besides that I thought Liberty Ship was a standout track. I'm struggling to place a lot of these because they'll have one or two songs I like and the rest are mediocre (to my taste) and just don't do much for me, so even though I wouldn't turn the album off and I enjoyed listening to it I struggle to say I actively liked it. This feels more like a 3.5 if I could, I thought it was better than average, even relative to the albums from here so far, it's good old fashioned British rock and that's not a bad genre, but it's not enough to be exciting, so a 3 is what it gets.

There She Goes is the obvious stand out track here but the rest of the album is alright, there were a couple of tracks that were a little more than alright too

I guess everything gets a 3 this week.

There She Goes is an all timer, but is it enough to lift the rest of the album to make it essential?

There she goes was good and the rest was okay

It was fine

Freedom Song Looking Glass

This was pretty good

Like a cross between the beetles and the kinks (depending on the song). If you want to listen to something different, listen to this.

Passabler alternative Rock.

British Country :(

Mostly harmless. 2½.

Their stuff is alright, not super memorable for me.

It’s fine, but there are better 90s alt records out there. There She Goes will always be a banger though. And I will say Looking Glass caught me by surprise. Those two pull this up to 3 stars

Perhaps it’s the over exposure to Brit pop through the years, but I found this album to be so painfully boring for large sections. Here she comes is a great single if not massively repetitive, looking glass is a good tune although not remarkable, the two best songs are by far freedom song and over , the version of which I had was recorded live in a stable. Musically there’s nothing here to write home about and it would perhaps have been a two star, if not for the above mentioned two tracks. If your a Brit pop fan maybe give it a go otherwise leave it in 1990.

It's kind of a shame that this band is known pretty much exclusively for \"There She Goes\" as that song is kind of boring and dumb and the rest of this record is quick, dirty, easy pop music. It's not incredible but certainly an enjoyable listen.

one good song but it’s pretty good

Un bel album sans prétention, me laisse une impression de douceur même si c'est rock

hit or miss

Not bad I suppose

Strong start with Son Of A Gun. The La’s are reminiscent of a less-whiny version of The Smiths. I was familiar with There She Goes which made me look out the window of the bus and smile nostalgically. Quite a good record, it’s a high 3 but falls short of the 4 because I don’t feel like I’d listen to it again in a hurry.

There she goes

Rock alternativo. Recuerdan a REM en alguna canción. Ni fu ni fa.

The La’s I wasn’t able to listen to this as much as I normally would yesterday , although I did listen to it last week. On first listen last week I was a bit underwhelmed and I struggled to pick anything discernible out. I think I might have been expecting an album full of very melodic jangly 60s guitar pop like There She Goes, or something as polished and immediate as The Stone Roses. The 2nd time around yesterday I listened to it sporadically throughout the day I enjoyed it more. And There She Goes is actually a bit of an outlier, not necessarily in quality but in structure and sound. It’s definitely not the proto Britpop album it’s gets described as, it’s much less wedded to a classic 60s guitar group template, it’s a bit more sinewy and moves outside those boundaries. Liberty Ship has a kind of musical slipperiness, maybe a bit Talking Heads-ish, with a folky, she shanty-ish melody. In fact there feels like a lot of sea shanty influences on this. There She Goes is an excellent song though. Like a lot of the overfamiliar of songs on these albums on the list, when you concentrate on them you really appreciate them. Son of a Gun, Timeless Melody, Liberty Ship I.O.U really stood out on that second listen. Feelin’ and Way Out I didn’t much like though. I’m not convinced by the overall sound. I know it was recorded over a lot of sessions but there is a bit of flatness on some songs and there’s a particular sound on some of the rhythm guitar that I’m not keen on. There She Goes is also a bit of an outlier in this regard as it does sound very different to the rest of the album. Bit of a tough one to rate, I haven’t listened to it as much as have the other albums we’ve done but I did like it, and there are definitely some very good songs on here, although a couple I want keen on and the production/sound was a bit of a letdown. I’ll go 3 for now, but will definitely listen more, it’s almost certainly a grower. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I enjoyed this. I'm not a huge fan of this kind of Brit rock but this album was good for me.

Had no idea what to expect only knowing THAT song, but surprisingly good album. Shame they were defined by that one song because there's some good stuff on here. Runs out of steam though

'There she goes' is extremely annoying, just slathered in cloying John Cusack face vibes. The rest is Beatles knock off indie pop for the post-Smiths era with a garage rock twist. It has a nice jangle to it, some psychedelic flair, and the hooks are strong. It gets better and better as it progresses though, dropping the bubblegum pop and getting into more exploratory deconstructed territory with a darker edge. Favorites: feelin', freedom song, failure, looking glass

It was okay. This was another case where the most popular song on the album was not the best, in my opinion. I enjoyed listening to it, but there wasn't really anything special about it

Gut durchzuhören.

Not a bad album in any way, but none of the songs managed to stick to my memory.

It was alright

One classic song, some good songs, and a lot of boring songs.

Meh, that's all i'll say

Pulled into the 3s by one song

Not a bad album! It’s got the charm of Rubber Soul, the attitude of Badfinger, and the lyrics of 80s Britain. Lee Mavers has an odd voice that shines when it shines and dims when it dims, but otherwise, the album is good. 3.4/5 Fav: “Feelin’”, “Son of a Gun” Least Fav: “Looking Glass”

It’s fine. Freedom Song was a standout, as well as the final song Looking Glass. But overall… maybe I needed to be in a better mood to appreciate more? Meh.

this seems indulgently long

Did not expect to like it. Sounded like it was from the 60's. Heavy Beatles influence, even heard some Pink Floyd hints in there. There She Goes is a huge hit that I never could have told you who wrote/performed and when. Pretty solid.

Not bad, not great. Good throwback melodic pop, but nothing on the album rises past "There She Goes". Still might give this another spin later though.

Not great, but not bad. Middle of the road album for me with that one famous song from every 90s movie.

Not bad for a band I have never heard of

Nothing insanely gripping, but an interesting album

Some solid tunes but the album started to drag long after a while.

There she goes! Good album

Kinda boring, not sure

"There She Goes" is a 10/10 banger, but the rest of the album is a little lacking in that same drive, at least to my ears. Bordered on rockabilly in some parts

This is where the 90s began. Worth a listen. 3.5 stars.

Sound like they were dropped out of the sixties into the nineties. Hints of the Stones, Beatles, and others from across the pond, plus some originality. Rather good British Rock with era guitar, decent harmonies, decent melodies, and overall balance. They could have had quite an impact thirty years earlier -- or today -- but the nineties are another matter.

Hated "There She Goes" in the 90s, and apparently I still hate it. Neat. Hadn't heard the rest of this album before now. I keep zoning out listening to it. It's just 90s pop rock in the background of a coffee shop to me, I think. Not bad but not particularly standing out, either.

Bonus point for 1990 nostalgia. Ubiquitous then, and influential, though hard to believe now, as it sounds so imperfect (recording the album was a notorious saga), and there's not much musically that's endured. There She Goes is great, but feels so different to the rest. I've soft spots for Way Out and Looking Glass, because I liked them when I was 16. Those songs drag the album up, barely and generously, to a 3. Nostalgia best left in the past.

I appreciated some parts of the album, but for the most part I didn't want to be listening to it. I would call it above average BritPop for my personal taste.

I like the slower songs on this album. Rest is just OK.

Just not as good as all the indie press made out.

There She Goes and I.O.U.

slightly less good REM

I didn't know the La's only made one album. There She Goes was of course a massive hit, and a great song. The other songs on this album are very good, not groundbreaking but good, solid pop songs. Overall, it's a very good album. I wish they had continued on; it would have been interesting to see where they went from here. 3 stars.

Looking glass was a bop. Obviously there she (initiates meta) goes always hits. all by myself was sneaky a good song. all in all pretty decent album with some good songs sprinkled throughout

I adored There She Goes as a child. I think it was on the soundtrack to a film I liked. I want to say it was The Parent Trap or some silly Mary-Kate and Ashley film (for some reason, I’m sure it was twin related). I don’t think I know any other songs by The La’s, so it should be nice to listen to this today. Songs I already knew: There She Goes Favourites: There She Goes, Doledrum This was a decent album, but I can certainly see why one song got much be lighter than the others. Even trying to listen with unbiased ears, There She Goes is so ridiculously simple of a song, but works so pleasantly. The rest of the album is in a very similar vain: acoustic pop rock from front to back. I wish I enjoyed this more than I did, but it was still a nice listen.

Sometimes I can't resist... I read the reviews before I listened. The jist I got is that There She Goes is the only worthwhile song and I know that song and I'm kinda sick of it. So I didn't have high hopes here. Yet it's a lot better than I expected. I had no idea that Timeless Melody was this band, I really like that song. For a while, it was pleasant enough, I got through There She Goes. At some point I drifted off though. Came to during the second half of Looking Glass. That was trippy. So I don't know, I'm not gonna play it again, but I won't leave the room if someone else puts it on

The fact is that the only song that stands out is the one that put them on the map. Nonetheless, is was a very enjoyable and nice surprise. Since it’s their only record, it might even go on my must-have list. [0080/1001]

Meh. Not a lot of stand out songs. It wasn’t that bad, but the songs blended together and most of the time didn’t feel like much. Good tracks but the rest are mediocre.

pretty listenable with a good song on it

“There she goes” Great song. Album pretty good too.

Hmmm ja prima zou het niet uit mezelf aanzetten

Perfectly good guitar pop that presages the sound of numerous bands like Oasis and Blur to follow. Presumably, this record and the work of The Stone Roses served as catalysts for the development of that sound. I found the closing track, Failure, to be the most compelling tune. They're all decent but little stuck with me. Not bad, not great and seemed to serve to push British music back to basics at just the right time. Points for influence.

Thought it was just alright. Maybe I need another listen.

Pretty good! The breakout song (There She Goes) is really good. And the vibes throughout are nice.

Fun tunes. Very easy listening. Not very exciting.

Liked it but didn’t love it

Wasn’t bad at all, but “There She Goes” is the only memorable song (as much as I love it).

An album that I’d unfairly overlooked before as being pretty dull other than one fantastic single (There She Goes, if that wasn’t obvious) However there’s actually quite a lot to this - musically it’s pretty simple and I’m not a huge fan of the vocals, but it is catchy and surprisingly diverse. I don’t really care for the other singles (especially Way Out) but the Stone Roses-esque groove of Liberty Ship and the quirky Freedom Song are two other highlights, with the other tracks ranging from jangly pop to distorted almost punky bangers

Half this is really good examples of 90 rock. And half is boring as all hell I think the one huge hit killed them more than made them

3/5. An enjoyable collection of britpop songs but nothing stands out. It was a nice listen and I can hear the influence from other bands as well as the inspiration to other bands this album provided. Especially the last song stands out as a highlight, it's just the shorter songs don't provide much sustenance.

This is an album you could listen to wearing a flannel and some docs kind of peaceful nice music

A few interesting songs but overall not my taste

Meh. Average. 3/5

Great album, fantastic even, but not my thing
