nothing special imo
So far, none of the album comes even close to There She Goes. Kinda vibey but also a little generic feeling. Much more rock-n-roll than I was expecting. All By Myself is SO boring. Over is another snoozefest. It also just feels a little boomer-y overall. Not a fan
Only three songs were offered, the single was alright but I'm not really a fan.
Meh… there she goes is fire
I guess I expected more. What I got was mostly 60s (especially Beatles sounding-) pop without any standouts. The only exception, of course, being There She Goes. But that alone is not enough. 2/5
It's a very middling update to Merseybeat, except for one glorious single.
Instantly forgettable Britpop.
Ehh
Unfortunately one song cannot carry this entire album.
I've only heard 'There she goes' before from the La´s, and after listeningen to this I understand why. The whole album was pretty forgetful actually, nothing there to reel you in. It's not bad per-se, but there's just nothing that stands out apart from 'There she goes' to me. I think I will change it up and give this a strong 2, instead of a weak 3.
This was very close to getting a one for me. I've only heard "There she goes" before and it's not a song i particularly enjoy. I found it annoying and sounded often like budget R.E.M with forgetful lyrics.
2.5
2.5
fine? there are definitely songs that are better than there she goes (i really don’t like that song) but i have forgotten what all of them sound like
I downloaded and listened to this on headphones while hiking today. This was a prime listening environment and the album would sound as good as it possibly can. The album entered this environment and delivered plain vanilla.
Someone mentioned that this list is highly influenced by Brit Pop of the 80s and 90s and what the music critics were high on at that time and I can’t disagree. This album has one decent Pop song “there she goes” but the rest can’t carry the album … and the lead vocalist is weak.
Ig jangle pop is not my speed this was ass apart from 2 songs
Muy poquito, algún temita, algún arreglito y poco más. Insulso.
What’s up with one hit wonders making this list? I’m not hating on bands with only one known hit, but after listening to this whole thing, I can confidently say 95% of it is so bland you could could eat it on a diet.
And I just can't contain, this 2-star feeling that remains.
I had no idea that this album is considered a classic. I thought it was a vehicle for an earworm one hit wonder that’s derivative of the Kinks. Baffled by its inclusion.
Bof
I'm finding it hard to tie this band and sound down. A lot of it sounds like it's straight out of the 60's. 'There She Goes' is an obvious example. 'I Can't Sleep' sounds just like the Kinks, but other tracks feel like they have lots of other touchpoints from that era. It doesn't feel 90's to me at all. It's fine in parts, but most of the album isn't really grabbing me. A lot of it really drags. It certainly doesn't feel essential.
Bang average at best
Crap.
Sure it's nice and easy but is it really memorable? I suspect once tomorrow [or tonight] comes I'll forget every song on this save the big single "There She Goes" which - let's be honest here - is 2.5 minutes of the same head bobbing riff over and over with zero variation. But I *will* want to re-watch "So I Married An Axe Murderer" so, points awarded for early 90s nostalgia I guess. I still can't bring myself to give this more than a 2 tho; it's really not bad! It just bored me. Candy equivalent: a mini pixi-stix. Quick little smile but 10 minutes later I'm hungry and don't want another one. 5/10 2 stars.
Pretty good 90s pop / rock, but also pretty generic and forgettable.
the fact that 'there she goes' was my alarm sound for the longest time brings me smiles somehow, so I already had a positive sentiment coming into this. i'd say the hardest aspect for me to get on board with was the vocal and guitar twang (they both had an interesting quality that twang is probably the best descriptor for??), which added to the feel in some songs, but kinda fell flat in others, which was the case for the lyrics and instrumentation as well. timeless melody had a slight sense of naivety, and strawberry fields forever-era beatles influence with a 90s britpop take is a cool way to look at it! however, i think I stand by the analysis that there she goes was the best takeaway from the album and a hit for a reason. the rest of the songs, aside from possibly feelin', were difficult for me to get through. tl;dr- I liked there she goes & feelin', but not much else
Boring, generic pop rock. The hit single is great, but I'm not sure the rest of the album is worth listening to.
This is jolly. They seem like competent writers and musicians, but there was nothing here that spoke to me. It sounds meaningful without meaning much to me. I found nothing to draw me in and want to explore further.
I've never understood the hype about this album - both at the time of its release and in the present. It's been mythologised as some gold standard. That's what happens when you only record one album and then split. It's decent enough, but far from the level of adoration it generates. There was a time when There She Goes Goes got released every September it seemed. That did me nut in.
Pretty meh.
More like the blah's.
One hit wonder is the only reason this didn't get a 1
Totally fine -- nothing jumped out at me but it was fine to listen to. 2.5 stars
I find this album pretty beige. The song writing isn't terrible, but nothing grips me. One listen was enough.
I struggle to justify the inclusion here. The single “There She Goes”, isn’t even that great. The songs either feel like music that the Beatles did better 25 years prior or that Oasis would do better 5 years later.
the la's self-titled album was more punk than i was expecting when when wikipedia listed the genres as pop and rock. not much stood out to me on this album. though it wasn't bad, it wasn't great--not even deserving of a 3, i think. it wasn't jarring, to its credit, and it was easy enough to listen to. but a little too even without anything interesting to jump out.
Man, "There She Goes" is such a great song, but the rest of the album does not live up to that song. Everything else paled in comparison. The rest of the album was just very bland.
Not particularly memorable -- more like The Blah's by The Blah's!
Not my kind of music. "There she goes" var den eneste jeg kjent fra før. Den er ok, men resten får jeg gnagsår i ørene av.
Oh man I hate this. Like much, much worse rem.
Britpoppy? Wasn't a huge fan.
there she goes is a pleasant song but kinda surprised it has 250 mil plays the rest of the songs are fine 2.5
i mean this is one of 1001 albums to listen to before you die? really?
Not my cup of tea.
So incredibly incredibly bland. 'There She Goes' is fine, but this entire thing is stuck in the 90's. I do not get the hype.
This is absolutely an album that exists. They sure played their instruments. There were lyrics as well I think. Can't remember, but I'm sure they were about some deep stuff like how their balls hang or something.
I got so excited when I saw "There She Goes" on this album but then very confused when it did not sound like the one I knew. Maybe this was the original song and what I heard all the time was a cover. Not sure who sung that cover, maybe six pence, but either way, the rest of this album was that classic British rock that I do not care for.
Sometimes, when I hear "There She Goes" on the radio, I wonder to myself why this band didn't make it bigger. Now I guess I know why. The rest for the album is very mediocre and fairly forgettable. Some tracks are so obviously derivative of the Beatles it's a bit laughable. I guess they do get some points for influence considering they helped pave the way for artists like Oasis and their subsequent imitators. But is that really a good thing?
1 hit
Not my kind
You know, I don’t even really like There She Goes that much. 4/10
Decent
This guy's got a real hard on for Brit pop huh?
Milquetoast.
Nice enough
There She Goes, a single so good, it was released four times. Another good single, Timeless Melody. And a lot of filler.
boring
It's not bad. Not good either though. The one song had a lot more play than the rest of the album according to Amazon music and it makes sense.
so so
Nicht meins
Alright, might give a few of the songs another whirl but nothing really standout
The La's were pretty much a one hit album. It is funny to me to learn that Mavers was a perfectionist. This album is alright. There She Goes is a hit song! Anyway 4/10
Meh.
meh
Uneven
massive one hit wonder here. the rest of the album is single paced and samey and if they were playing live i don't know if i'd manage the full set. i have no understanding of how a band that had as much of an impact on the world as the mock turtles can sit there with a bigger reputation than the inspiral carpets.
Decent. A very 2.5* album
Not as dynamic as I'd hoped.
Dull unimaginative tripe...
Decent album with good songs and one big hit song. Its OK but nothing special. 2/5
Credit for some solid variety, but most of it just didn't land with me. It somehow managed to be eccentric but also fall flat at the same time.
New artist to me. Didn't really wow me. Fine enough. There She Goes slaps.
There she goes #1 obviously Added Looking Glass to a playlist - 8 min song and a good one to just sit down and listen to
Like to add the time but in the all-time racing it’s no higher than a two
nice eyes
Is this just a REM from an alternate universe where every song is not so good?
The entire thing felt like a demo to show off the song writing. It all feels extremely weak and undeveloped
kind of annoying
One better song does not a good album make
Meh. 5/10
It was fine.
I learned (at least for now) who sings 'There She Goes'. Otherwise... nothing much to say
4th April 2022 Listened in the front room while working from home. Cleared the front room and watched the end of peaky blinders. Not bad but not sure it deserves a place on the 1001 albums. There she goes is the stand out track and has become so, all the others are ok.
2.5
If it wasn't for "There She Goes" I probably would've lowered the rating.
I like that The La’s wanted to make the perfect pop song and the closest they got was the untypical There She Goes but all these tries jangle along, some passable, others tiresome, but it’s a dreary affair lacking much energy or joy, the lyrics especially flat. When There She Goes appeared in a holiday advert in the UK you kind of knew for sure there was no magic in this.
Meh got that Matilda song that's good. But it's just fine otherwise. Nought interesting
Best Song: Timeless Melody. Nice, pure 90s sounding hook. A good enough song that I went back and listened to it again specifically after the album ended. Worst Song: Freedom Song. This waltz ain't workin'. Overall: There's really one hit wonders in this list?
Feels like The Beatles reincarnated in the 90's, but lacking originality. I found most of the songs quite bland or pointless unfortunately. Probably only a handful or less of them are worth a listen, but those ones are indeed pretty good and even great, but just too few to make it a worthwhile listen for the whole album. 4/10
One of the most disappointing albums I have listened to on this journey so far...I LOVE LOVE LOVE There she Goes. Probably a top 10 single for me all time, but the rest of the album is mostly filler that 1) doesn't have the same jangly sound and 2) doesn't really have the same pop ascetics. 2/5
mediocre other than there she goes. that one's a masterpiece
Pop sin estridencias. Un tanto plano, sin destacar especialmente. Tranquilo y sin aportar nada en exceso
Não empolga. Tem algum hit que não lembrei de onde tive contato.
Unexciting 90s. almost country-y at times. Apart from there she goes completely forgettable.
Who?? Never heard of this band. Maybe because brit pop is not my jam. From the first note I could tell this would be a slog. "There She Goes" is the big hit on this album. Recognizable and a good toe tapper. Otherwise... why is this on the list?
Not a fan
One half decent song and a load of banality
Nunca nadie se preguntara porque son un one hit wonder
Hoped there'd be anything great inside except There She Goes, but nope
Album #3 Going in, the only song of theirs I'm familiar with is There She Goes and I haven't listened to it in a good while. Holy hell, only 3 songs in and I wish I could listen to literally anything else. The instrumentals are entirely generic, boring and uncreative, even for the time. The singing is nothing short of an assault on the ears. The songwriting is riddled with nothing but the most cringeworthy and eye-roll inspiring empty platitudes I've heard in a good long time. I even looked at some reviews from the time and was shocked to see how positive they were. Not sure what kind of crack the critics were smoking back then, but I'd sure like some. I really don't want to spend any more time listening to or thinking about this album. I just want to it be over, so I'm keeping this one short. If I have something nice to say it's probably that "There She Goes" is still a somewhat catchy song, and that is the only reason this album doesn't get 1 star. Thank god they didn't release any more albums after this travesty.
Forgettable for me
There she goes is their best song. And I feel as if this band is a one hit wonder. Kinda shocking to see their album listed here. Either way it’s an ok album that is mostly just it’s best song. Nothing more. 5.2/10
I knew one song - There she goes. It is a good song. The rest is just meh and I just wanted it to be done and it is a short album.
It's OK not bad but not super exciting either. As many people have said not quite sure why this got picked over other similar (better) albums from the time.
This was obviously another one-hit wonder album. It wasn’t hard on the ears but it wasn’t very memorable except for one or two songs. Fav songs: there she goes, doledrum
Like Smashmouth but bad. Utterly forgettable except for "There She Goes" which, yes, is the song you think it is.
First listen. There she goes is the song I know the La's for is a classic. I've heard it on the radio as well from several movies. The rest of the album was new to me. 2/5
It's got "There she goes". Everything else was pretty ok.
This sort of pop-tinged garage rock is usually something I would be drawn to, but I was mostly bored with this album. They could have edited several songs off of this and had a better album. I'm really not a fan of Mavers' raspy-whiny voice. The obvious star track is "There She Goes," which has been embedded in our collective cultural brain since 1990. It's a pretty perfect pop song with the best hook that will not let you go. Most of these songs I'm fine not hearing again though. Fave songs: There She Goes, Looking Glass
This sounds like the answer to the question that nobody asked: "What if we created a band that bridges the gap between REM and Dave Matthews?" The singer sounds constipated. I get that this was released in 1990 and predated/started the Britpop movement (which I love) BUT as a result I could find a number of records that sound similar but are much better. Also, that bass tone sounds like a fart... Highlights: The call/answer vocals in "I Can't Sleep"; There She Goes is a great song; Feelin' is good too.
This album grew on me as I listened, though I hated it at first. Overall, it's a decent album, but I'm not sure how it made this list. The La's are clearly rooted in early-60's rock (I heard the Animals and Yardbirds in there, specifically), but they showed up about 25 years too late and didn't really add anything too it. It just sounds like an album that came out in '64. To their credit, in retrospect "There She Goes" and "The Looking Glass" were a preview of what 90's popular music would become. Kudos for that, but - as an album? It's okay.
This was ok at best. Obviously "There she goes" is **the** track on this album, but even that doesn't redeem it far. "Looking Glass" was actually terrible.
1.5 hits, 8.5 miss
OK this is just really not good. I don't absolutely hate it either, but I really can't hear anything good about this. It's really uninteresting and seems to have no redeeming qualities. Just not good music.
я такую дрянь не слушаю принципиально, мусор ...
Didn't vibe with this album. There She Goes made it to the playlist
Nothing particularly offensive about it but just pretty bland. Once you get past There She Goes the quality does drop off quite a lot, and the play counts drop off as you'd expect. The last 3 proper tracks on the album are particularly weak.
There that recommendation goes
Repetitive but unique
Alright I suppose.
pas dingue, manque de punch, 2/5
блять ну у них в то время соревнование в ужасности голоса было или че блять я не понимаю. звучит уже даже приятно но суука ты можешь петь нормально блять а не выть как уебище сука йоко ты блять оно
Not terrible really, but not for me.
No es mal disco, pero no hay ni una sola canción que me haya llamado la atención lo más mínimo.
It’s fine. It’s like a mediocre 60s pop album that was released in the early 90s (which again, is fine) and because of that somehow considered really important. Enjoyable enough tho, but won’t revisit.
One hit single does not an unmissable album make. If you say you're going to revisit this you're a liar.
Singy songy guitar and vocals. Meh.
That one song was good...
Interesting voice there she goes is great not much else grabs me
Legendary single and easy to listen. Nothing extraordinary but it's a sign of their times.
Just found that really dull. It wasn't necessarily bad I just got quite bored.
2.8
Other than There She Goes this was rather bland
I admit, I wasn't paying good attention to this album. While listening I noticed a thought that why this R.E.M album sounds this folky. That good of a record this was for me.
So many hooks, so many melodies, yet this album falls completely flat for me. Even "there she goes" gets tiresome in context of the lp. Pass.
1. gun - 1 2. zleep - 1 3. melody - 1 4. zhip - 1 5. goez - 1 6. drum - 2 7. feeling - 0 8. uuay - 0 9. i . o . u . - 1 10. zong - 1 11. failure - 1 12. glazz - 1 13. myzelf - 2 14. clean - 1 15. knock - 0 16. over - 1
"La" is the sound you make when you can't remember a tune and you try to hum it, which means it wasn't that memorable. That goes the same for this one as well. Boring and bland.
Disappointed
Brittipopin määrä tällä listalla on ihan tolkuton. Ainoa selitys lienee, että isohko osa listan laatijoista on brittikriitikoita, jotka pitävät 1980- ja 1990-lukujen oman saarensa poppiksesta. Tämän albumin oleminen listalla ei selity millään muulla. There she goes -biisin on kuullut jokainen. Eikä sekään ole hyvä biisi vaikka hitti ysärillä onkin. Täyttä roskaa 35 min verran. 1/5
no man no Will I listen to again: 0%
There she goes I guess. This is not how I expected this album to sound. I like it less. Why is it a guy. And why is he singing like that. I don't like it. It sounds like he's singing badly on purpose because he's embarrassed to try. This is not good. I'll go to doledrum if I so please. I really don't like this. It sounds like something a kid would make. It's kinda just noise. You should be all by yourself. Favourite: There She Goes Least favourite: I Can't Sleep
Sigh. More bland bands with one notable song.
I feel like the more I listen the more I would like but rn it isn’t speaking to me. I never really liked there she goes anyways
Dosta lejm album. 1/5, 1/10
There She Goes is a classic but it’s not enough to make up for the boring repetitive shit that is the rest of the album.
Not a vibe :c
Got 0 enjoyment out of this, boring as fuck. 1/10 Favourite track: N/A
Dull
maybe wrong generation or wrong age, but i'm not in the mood for meaningless mediocre upbeat dream pop. i never am.
This one hit wonder band's one hit wonder isn't even good enough to justify making a whole album, much less needing to listen to it before you die. Don't! Looking Glass is laughably bad and is almost 8 minutes long. It might be one of the only songs I'm aware of that they sing the band's name over and over, so that's some sort of accomplishment? I hated this album so much
one hit wonders. and then elevator music.
No, you don't need to listen to this before you die.
Wow I hated this. Here she goes again is nice but the rest sucked
90s psyop
Not my thing.. didn't like it
1HitWda
This album is dogshit. The kinda dogshit where your beloved pit bull chewed up a tennis ball, swallowed it, then when he took a shit, the turds had fluorescent yellow patches in it. That’s this album. 1001 album worthy: not at all - 86/159
La, la, la, … langsam nervt die Auswahl der Platten nur noch.
Nobody cares …
Und wieder ein 90er-jahrebritpopbelangloslangweiliges Werk *gähn
This was fine. There are some pretty good songs. 1001 is a lot of albums. Maybe it's easier to make the cut than I thought.
A one hit wonder with a completely generic album? Not an essential listen in any way.
Son Of A Gun- This is not so bad, maybe it will be like R.E.M I Can't Sleep- Also not awful, but there just isn't any build-up or tension as far as I'm concerned Timeless Melody- John is repeating the end of the verses that rhyme from the kitchen. Running into the same sort of problems I had with the other tracks Liberty Ship- this is the point where it started to sink in There She Goes - This song single-handedly kind of poisoned the album for me going in AND I JUST CANT CONTAYAYAYAIN Doledrum-not the biggest fan Feelin- Sounds a little like the Friends theme Way Out- A little better than the others, I think it has a bit more momentum but still falls flat for me Freedom song- Absolutely not. im in hell Failure - No Looking Glass - imagine all the people, living for today....They are playing the same thing faster now, get me OUT I had to listen twice to do my due diligence before I talked shit about it and honestly ended up disliking it more on the second listen LOL These songs just feel like they go nowhere. They have these classic sort of British with a capital B pop structures and just repeat the same thing over and over at the same tempo and none of it is interesting for me. There isn't really any tension or release. Saying nothing in a nothing tone of voice. Metronome hell. Feels like drinking groundwater.
This dude dropped the lyric "If you look in your mind / Do you know what you will find" in the third song and I fully checked out. I'm sure it's a classic according to British rock journalists (and people who use the phrase "pop nuggets") (and Oasis fans) (and Oasis).
Sounded like shitty REM
meh
Who compiled this list? There's a reason The La's only made one album, they are crap. This project could very easily be renamed 1001 albums not to listen to before you die. And it desperately needs a zero star rating/
Not for me. 1/5
In this album: British invasion cosplay made by some losers in the 90's who were born in the wrong generation. Another generic British rock album but completely uninspired. Once I got to Looking Glass I wanted to shoot myself. I struggled to finish this record. Looking Glass and All By Myself were incredibly painful, I nearly gave up on finishing this album when I had to deal with them. WHY ARE THEY SO LONG AND REPETETIVE? I GET IT CUNT, YOU'RE ALL BY YOURSELF, SHUT UP. This album is obviously just a one-hit-wonder album, as There She Goes is the only recognisable (and good) song on the album. Why does the quality of the music suddenly perk up only for There She Goes, then the rest of the album sounds like it was recorded on a used microphone from the 1960's? Did they spend all their budget on the one hit song and forgot they had to record a whole album around it? Why is There She Goes a completely different genre to the rest of the album? Just go listen to literally any British invasion album instead, it sounds the exact same but at least it's good.
One hit wonder band. Even the 'hit' on this album is mid at best. I guess it's just an earworm pop song that's made it into karaoke mixes because literally anyone could convincingly sing this song which is almost an indictment on how basic this tune is. This was a total chore to get through. Really plain, no spark or panache. It must have been a chore for the band members too because The La's have had gone through more band members (25) than they've released songs on studio albums (12-17 idk) It's astounding to me that anyone would give enough of a fuck about this band or this album to warrant a DELUXE edition. The peak chart position in the UK was 30 and in the US it was 196. Nobody gave a fuck about this album when it game out, why am I listening to this in current year?
What shits me about this album is that because this is in the list it means we miss out on hundreds of other albums that are better than this generic crap. The only impact this album has produced is all the people that crashed their cars into oncoming traffic at 110km an hour because doing that is quicker than shutting off the fucking car stereo. Like dexies I can't get my time back from listening to this album, fucked up. Crazy frog has had a greater impact on peoples lives than this album. I only know "There she goes" from the hit movie parent trap (1998) and that's it. Fuck the guy that thought this warranted a place on this list, only saving grace is that this was not a Friday album so I don't have to worry about listening to this over the weekend. 1/5
Another prime example of an album that's only true value comes from the lone breakout single of this One Hit Wonder (in this case, "There She Goes"). The rest of this project could be forgotten about entirely, but the entire album is arbitrarily tossed on this list, because apparently by this list's logic, if you find a diamond in the rough, the whole rough is suddenly just as valuable as the diamond itself.
I think one of the things this list points out is that mainstream rock in the late 80s was just so awful that an album like this becomes one you need to listen to before you die. 30+ years on this is such a forgettable drag. They wrote “There She Goes” - cool. That song and the rest of this is a snooze.
This was in every charity shop in the 90s, I was one of the many who felt ripped off by the unrealised promise of that one great single.
Liked Song There She Goes
without this list, i would have in fact died never listening to this, and upon my arrival in hell would have been dutifully informed i had missed out on some classic British jangle pop. "thank god" i would have said
En esta lista hay discos muy prescindibles. Este está en el top ten.
Proof there are not 1001 albums you must listen to.
Not my jam
There she goes kenne ich
that one hit song sounds entirely different than the rest of the album… and is also their only hit. what’s up with that?
More boring britrock
Just dogshit. Id rather [description of immoral/dangerous acts] than listen to shit like this again. Listened to the first two songs, skipped around next three, hit the stop and hid the artist on spotify forever. Fuck this type of music. Significant 17/45 Liked 7/45 Added 1/45 Unironically fuck this album
One hit wonders. Surprised they on this list.
Meh
Jesus, who thought it was a good idea to include this horseshit on a list of 1001 essential albums? This is truly awful. This sounds like Dollar Store brand Stone Roses. One good song does not, a good album make. There She Goes is a classic song, but the rest of this album is awful. Generic alternative/pop rock from the 90's. The one good thing about it is most songs are only 2-3 minutes long. This generator seems to be weighted heavily to shit British bands. Overall, a horrible album that I can't wait to forget. No redeeming qualities. Favourite songs: There She Goes, Doledrum, I.O.U. Least favourite songs: Looking Glass, All By Myself, Failure, Freedom Song, Feelin' 1/5 (1 point for the only song worth talking about, There She Goes).
"There She Goes" stands out like a sore thumb on this thing because it is actually interesting.
not for me
This one was tough to listen to. 12 tracks of bad 90s romcom music. I'm better of having died before having listened to this one.
Genuinely awful
This was okay. I have a feeling this wouldn't have had much lasting power without "There She Goes" on it. The songs are pretty earnest and endearing but not super memorable. Seems like the thought was there but maybe not the execution? The closer is very good though!
This sucks
nothing much here
There she goes
If the "retro" that they are selling nowadays is the '80s, often represented with vibrant colors, what is the "retro" in the '80s itself? The answer is, probably, the '60s. Not colorful and bright, just simple. The good old days. And there she goes, the album that attempted to create a nostalgic retro album but ended up creating a painfully generic and tedious pop rock album instead. Not the best retro from the '80s amirite lads? Or should I say... L A' S ?
tedioso
Bien, there she goes es popular, IOU y no mas que esto. Es un disco que mira a los 80s o antes y es de principio de los 90s.
siuuuu
There She Goes was my favorite song on this album. It’s a sweet, upbeat song
