The La's

-The starting riff from "I Can't Sleep" totally sounds like an old school riff from The Who. Also just a solid blend of like 60's rock and a bit of punk. Has some cool bass licks that pop out on occasion -Cool main riff in "Liberty Ship" -"Feelin'" and "Way Out" are fun little tunes -"Looking Glass" goes pretty crazy at the end there -Pretty fun album. I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and give it a 4. Definitely some fun stuff in there

Of course the one-hit is the star of this, but the other stuff wasn't half bad either. However, this is basically one of the seeds that helped grow britpop, and for that I don't know if I can forgive them.

I actually am disappointed this group ended after this, because the album was really strong and punchy. I think if they had written another album they might have become massive successes.

The La's were pretty much a one hit album. It is funny to me to learn that Mavers was a perfectionist. This album is alright. There She Goes is a hit song! Anyway 4/10

Pretty solid album I liked the freedom song. It makes you feel like your in a pub on the east coast in the 1970s. A lot of the songs sounded like the same thing and they only switched it up a few times.

This album was a weird one for me. Obviously there is an influence of an album that can be seen while looking at it, and it's obvious what this album did for this sort of rock going into the 90's. Bands such as Oasis are obviously inspired by this, and I could see why at the time this would be something big. The issue comes in to the fact that it doesn't change that I'm just not a fan of this album, or really this style of music. I mean, I enjoy some good jangle pop, but the singer's voice sometimes can go from just a little weird but okay sounding to very whiney (which ironically is a complaint I have for Oasis as well), and it makes a lot of the songs feel very repetitive. I'm not saying the songs all sound similar, because they don't, but it does start to blend together. I was honestly ready to give this a two star rating, purely pushing it up a little because of it's influence and "There She Goes", but I will push it right over to three stars purely due to the final song, "Looking Glass". I'm a sucker for long songs that get more and more frantic or "stressful" as the song goes on (see "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by the Beatles), and this one stratched that itch pretty well.

Vid, ovo je dobar album, međutim nije mi toliko za četvorku, ali svakako There She Goes je petica od pjesme, a pridružuje se na grani dobrih pjesama - Doledrum i Looking Glass. Vjerujem da bi mi bolje sjeo da sam ga možda još jednom-dva puta poslušao, tu je na 3.5., zasad tu ostaje, vidit ćemo kasnije kada opet jednog dana dođe na repertoar.

I have no idea what this was until I came to "There She Goes" which also didn't happen to sound like any of the other songs. With that said though it was a fun album.

massive one hit wonder here. the rest of the album is single paced and samey and if they were playing live i don't know if i'd manage the full set. i have no understanding of how a band that had as much of an impact on the world as the mock turtles can sit there with a bigger reputation than the inspiral carpets.

The album that inspired a generation of scallies to pick up guitars. An album with a lot to answer for. The '90s Britain would have sounded very different without the influence of this album, it would definitely have sounded a lot less like the '60s.

You would never ever believe this was an album where the lead singer was such a perfectionist over that it drove the rest of the band insane. That being said this shit is great, timeless melody, freedom song and looking glass would be my ‘must listens’ because everyone knows there she goes right. You also have to attribute this (and the stone roses first album) for basically being ‘proto britpop’. As wether you like that kinda music or not (I love it) the la’s could be seen as the earliest starting point. The album lacks filler but the songs are so short it wouldn’t matter if there was 5/5

I got really into jangle pop for awhile when my friend's band got slapped with the label in a review. I was curious about the term and found the music to be super melodic and catchy - including The La's. There She Goes is a brilliant pop song but I always liked the closer Looking Glass most of all.

I knew of "There She Goes" of course, but never thought about this band in the slightest, ever. I guess that's Brit-Pop for ya. It's fine, but just "there".

Great rock album! A ton of acoustic songs and very lyrical.

Credit for some solid variety, but most of it just didn't land with me. It somehow managed to be eccentric but also fall flat at the same time.

This Is a really great alt rock and pop album I thoroughly enjoyed it

Lots of jangly guitars and OK tunes, but there's an overwhelming feeling that this was done by a late 60s B-list band, and the record company rejected the album. There She Goes is the only standout track. Well done of its kind but not outstanding.

Thought this was mid dad rock but the last song caught me a bit and so I went back and listened to a couple songs again and actually it's properly good. There she goes is apparently a very well known song and I really like that one and duldrums too. Should give another listen at some point.

It was spotty to me. Some pretty good songs mixed with a couple meh ones. I never knee they wrote There She Goes so I done learnt today. I can see why people like it, it's really not a bad album, but its hard to see why anyone would rave about it.

I really liked this! Every song was different and engaging and just overall pleasant. I didn’t think it was necessarily groundbreaking but I do think it’s really well done for 90s power pop. On my first listen, I was thinking I would give it a 4, but after listening to twice, I’m giving it a 5 because I plan to keep it on my phone.

"there she goes" is part of the soundtrack of my youth, but I could honestly not name you a single other track by The La's. Which I think probably says all that needs to be said about them. Just having "There she goes" makes this a 4 star album - but the rest of it is 100% forgettable.

I am going to burn in hell for saying this album and the La's are massively overrated. There are a few unbelievably great songs on here, "There She Goes" of course and "Timeless Melody" but most of the album sounds like sub par Hermins Hermits to my ears. I wonder if they would be as revered if they released more albums

If you gave me 100 guesses at the name of the band that did ‘There She Goes’ I never would have gotten it. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything else of theirs but this is way better than ‘one hit wonder’ material

I really enjoyed the album. Very nostalgic for me. I was 10 when it was released. I knew 60% of the songs and the unfamiliar ones were good. The song When You Were Mine was written by Prince, which is pretty cool

I can see this growing on me a bit the more I listen to it, but there's not much that stands out here to me besides "There She Goes"

A record in my sweet spot, a high water mark of my college radio prime. I still have the vinyl shared promotionally by the record co. Every cut works well on its terms, and the record is the antithesis of the one-hit-wonder in that sense, but it’s hard to believe they never made another album – sound like the perfect got to be the enemy of the good. The final track still amazes, pulling together the records many to build something new; the whole is very much more the sum of its parts, which might also be said of the record a whole.

This is bad. Really bad. It's an early 90s one hit wonder (strike one), the hit is awful (strike two), and the rest of the album sounds like poppy, watered down Morrissey (strike three). This album is best left forgotten and its one stupid hit is best left to shitty direct-to-DVD romcom soundtracks.

Like most people, my first impression upon hearing this was the album to hear was "The La's is a very stupid name for a band", and while that thought never left my head, their debut, and only, album, was actually a welcome surprise of energetic pop rock that reminds me of Oasis if Oasis was good. It is only sad that it seems the band could not figure their shit together enough to create a follow up, there was real potential here. Standouts: Timeless Melody, I Can't Sleep

Great retro sound. This harks back to the Merseybeat 60's sound. Fresh, crisp and clear it's like a summer breeze. Weird I wrote that before I read the Wiki page! Still, like a lot of these airy songs there's no cutting edge so nothing to stay with you.

It definitely got better on the second listen so maybe it deserves a bit more time. There She Goes is such a standout.

Aside from "There She Goes" a song with multiple covers and surely a cherished track, the rest of the album is a solid experience, but nothing exhibits the staying power of the aforementioned. That does diminish the rest of the album, and perhaps unfairly. All in all, The La's is a band worth listening to and it should be counted as a shame that they were not able to continue.

Interesting that, while obviously commercial (and a commercial success), "there she goes" is probably the worst song on the album.

Well I, for one, had no idea that There She Goes was a cover song. That's cool, and the original sounds good (though it makes me feel less kindly about the cover, since it's virtually the same as the original). This album has a fun energy to it. A lot of the songs are upbeat. Other songs inexplicably sound as if The Who were fronted by the lead singer of Smashmouth. Those songs are less good. Still, this is a good album overall and one that I'd like to come back to 4/5

I'm having a good time with this album today. I already knew "There She Goes" because it's one of the most recognizable one-hit wonders of all time. Truthfully, if I have the option I usually skip it when it comes on because it's just so played out for me. But there's some other good stuff here too. I'm not going to be a forever listener or fan from here on out, but I'm glad I spent some time with this album.

Fun little album. I was convinced going in that this was a one-hit wonder whose one hit was played better by multiple other bands, but they won me over. Best track: There She Goes

There She Goes stands out on this album. Like a big chunk of candy bar in a pint of ice cream. If the ice cream was pretty good local ice cream. I like to think that The La's are a really good local band that just happen to have recorded an album. They don't feel like a rockstar band. They're good and, most likely, fun to see live in a bar venue (not an arena). Just popular enough that they sell a few shirts to friends of family members. Not so popular that people bother you when you're sharing a beer with them at the end of the gig.

4th April 2022 Listened in the front room while working from home. Cleared the front room and watched the end of peaky blinders. Not bad but not sure it deserves a place on the 1001 albums. There she goes is the stand out track and has become so, all the others are ok.

This is a real odd artifact. Aside from the ubiquitous hit (instantly familiar though I couldn’t come up with any context for recollection) I didnt know a thing about this band. A real odd mix of (to my ear) 60s britpop and psychedelic, some 70s American rock but also Velvets-sequel avant-garde alternative, and perhaps more obscure influences at play. Still wrestling over whether it is essentially just genre mash-up or actual invention. Audacious enough for a bunch of kids to grab an extra star.

I like that The La’s wanted to make the perfect pop song and the closest they got was the untypical There She Goes but all these tries jangle along, some passable, others tiresome, but it’s a dreary affair lacking much energy or joy, the lyrics especially flat. When There She Goes appeared in a holiday advert in the UK you kind of knew for sure there was no magic in this.

Hi- Son of a Gun, Timeless Melody, There She Goes, Doledrum Lo- Liberty Ship Son of a Gun is a great, bright and bouncy opener...In fact the first 3 tracks are bangers that get you moving, and without wearing out their welcome proceeds to the next track. Liberty Ship doesn't make much sense to me and is easily skippable, but luckily it proceeds to the fantastic There She Goes (made more famous by the Sixpense None The Richer cover), and Doledrum. The La's really don't draw things out (true to their name), providing a mostly excellent 90's British rock experience that might feel more down-to-earth than the likes of in-your-facers Oasis or big-budget sensations Stone Roses.

Fine, really. Nothing special and you can see why they were a one-hit wonder, but really not as bad as the reviews page would suggest. Probably shouldn't really be on this list but I'm rating by personal enjoyment so this one gets a passing grade for being completely okay.

Really the only question is do you like this style of music...early Kinks, mersey beat, brit jangle pop? Because if you do...this album is quite nearly perfect. Song after song pure pop perfection. Gorgeous melodies, tasteful, beautiful arrangements, sweet ringing guitars. For my sensibilities it is, as said...nearly perfect. 5 🌟

Like many listeners I only knew that beautiful single, so was looking forward to the album. So it begins with a bunch of great pop songs, culminating in "There She Goes." That song deserves its place as a soundtrack favourite: jangly, sweet guitars and those glorious, uplifting harmonies. Pure pop perfection. Then it starts getting interesting, a bit of rock, and some more introspective stuff. "Looking Glass" is a psychedelic masterpiece, I love how it finishes in a whirring blur. A bit of tightening and this is a five star album. I wish they'd recorded more. This is a great debut with a couple of great songs.

Although I'm tired beyond words of "There She Goes", the rest of the album was really enjoyable. I added it, and will gladly listen to it again.

Pretty good album, though it feels very dated. Might have been 8-9/10 in 1990, but in 2022 its more enjoyable as a relic of the early 90s than as a music album. Still, I can see why it is in this list, as it probably influenced quite a lot of later successful artists.

"There She Goes" is a good song, but I never even thought about who actually sang it. The rest of the album is easy to listen to, and enjoyable even if nothing stands out on it. I'm giving it a 3 because in all likelihood I'll never listen to it again. Just a bit too poppy for my tastes.

This album does what a lot of albums through the 90s tried to do, but not many came to the level that The La's did. Each song stands alone and has its own character without feeling too uncohesive as a whole for the album. And it's got There She Goes, so...

Feels like The Beatles reincarnated in the 90's, but lacking originality. I found most of the songs quite bland or pointless unfortunately. Probably only a handful or less of them are worth a listen, but those ones are indeed pretty good and even great, but just too few to make it a worthwhile listen for the whole album. 4/10

One of the most disappointing albums I have listened to on this journey so far...I LOVE LOVE LOVE There she Goes. Probably a top 10 single for me all time, but the rest of the album is mostly filler that 1) doesn't have the same jangly sound and 2) doesn't really have the same pop ascetics. 2/5

Quite lovely, really, all the magic dust bullshit aside.

What a fantastic album, captures the spirit and feel of classic 60s British pop (is it Mersybeat) better than any British pop album I can think of. It manages to sound both fresh and nostalgic at the same time. And every song is a winner. Of course the omnipresent There She Gies is the hilight, the song everyone knows but no one knows who sings it. I love this album for its sound, its gorgeous and utterly tasteful production but mostly for its fantastic songs. 5 🌟

Played it to death when I first bought it and couldn’t bear to listen to it for years. Reminded how great it is. Brilliant guitar pop. Loads of hooks. Short songs that never outstay their welcome. The only one I don’t get is Freedom Song. Doesn’t work for me.

Never heard of the band, cover communicates nothing, and the looong track list also betrays no theme or personality. The short opening song is intriguing enough and I am rather enjoying I Can't Sleep. To me the first few songs sound like if the Ramones and Tom Petty got together to start a band inspired by the Monkees. Unfancy rock and roll. Fine, good, but unexceptional. Ah, there it is. There She Goes. So I do know something by this band. Genuinely fantastic song. Possibly, maybe, a top 1000 song. But one song doesn't make a top 1000 album. The album rocks along from there quite nicely until Looking Glass, at which it grinds to a painful stop. The first 11 songs I'd give 4 stars but the whole thing only gets 3.

One half decent song and a load of banality

Not what I was expecting, having only heard There She Goes before. Heavily inspired by the Kinks, and a good listen.

Being a big Fleetwood Mac fan this is kinda giving me the same feel especially Son of a Gun it carries a simplicity and just works. I’ve said that a few times but that’s the thing with music sometimes keeping it simple works. And not really knowing any of The La’s music it’s a pleasant surprise listening to their music for the first time. Little disappointed by the second half of the album definitely let’s it done but does obtain a difference from other albums.

Great album of course - used to be standard 4.5/5-star for me ..but then in 2006 a BBC in Session album was released with superior versions of many songs. This make it a bit difficult to rate it as 5-star.

It's alright, nothing that really stands out.

My primary experience with the La's is the appearance of "There She Goes" on the "How I Married an Axe Murder" soundtrack. I probably checked out a few other tracks from the band because of "There She Goes", but I can't say for sure. The La's fits in with other bands that I would have been listening to at the time that this album came out (Blur, The Lightning Seeds, The Ocean Blue). I still have a soft spot for that sound, even if it feels strongly anchored to the 90s. I still like "There She Goes". "Son of a Gun", "Feelin'", and "Timeless Melody" grabbed my attention. Overall, I enjoyed the album enough to listen to the bonus tracks on the extended edition.

This was okay, but no real stand out songs aside from "There She Goes." Everything basically blended together. This whole time I thought a woman sung There She Goes, but I think I was just misremembering the song.

Album #3 Going in, the only song of theirs I'm familiar with is There She Goes and I haven't listened to it in a good while. Holy hell, only 3 songs in and I wish I could listen to literally anything else. The instrumentals are entirely generic, boring and uncreative, even for the time. The singing is nothing short of an assault on the ears. The songwriting is riddled with nothing but the most cringeworthy and eye-roll inspiring empty platitudes I've heard in a good long time. I even looked at some reviews from the time and was shocked to see how positive they were. Not sure what kind of crack the critics were smoking back then, but I'd sure like some. I really don't want to spend any more time listening to or thinking about this album. I just want to it be over, so I'm keeping this one short. If I have something nice to say it's probably that "There She Goes" is still a somewhat catchy song, and that is the only reason this album doesn't get 1 star. Thank god they didn't release any more albums after this travesty.

Like most people, I mostly know The La's from soundtracks. I will say though that this album is pretty catchy in general and the production is on point. Very full and crisp.

Bara fín

It was okay. "There She Goes" is obviously a big hit, but the rest seemed kind of common for the era. Nothing stood out. But hey, okay isn't too shaby.

Second Listen. Still very enjoyable. There she goes is a perfect Alternative song. The rest of the album is still growing on me. Some of the songs have a modern 60's feel to them. So many great songs on this album. 3/5

If the "retro" that they are selling nowadays is the '80s, often represented with vibrant colors, what is the "retro" in the '80s itself? The answer is, probably, the '60s. Not colorful and bright, just simple. The good old days. And there she goes, the album that attempted to create a nostalgic retro album but ended up creating a painfully generic and tedious pop rock album instead. Not the best retro from the '80s amirite lads? Or should I say... L A' S ?

This album surprised me with being better than I thought it would be. Listened to it almost three times in a day. The songs are interesting, and they didn't all sound the same.

Halvbra album. Låter ibland som The Stone Roses och lite mer sällan som The Smiths. The La's når dock nästan aldrig upp till något som är i närheten så intressant eller bra som tidigare nämnda band. Looking Glass är med sina knappa 8 minuter typ den enda låten på albumet som är över 3 minuter (There She Goes är 3:01), vilket ändå känns lite slappt va?? Avrundar uppåt från 2,5/5. Bästa låt: There She Goes.

Nice piece of 90's power-pop, reminiscent of the 60's and the Monkees (who in turn of course were a parody of the Beatles) Scouse Powerpop didn't change much from Moptoppery and Merseybeatism to this late millenium version, but you do have to admire the craft of "There She Goes" as a piece of pure pop. Also like "Way Out" and I.O.U. nbot in my collection but worth a listen.

There she goes is their best song. And I feel as if this band is a one hit wonder. Kinda shocking to see their album listed here. Either way it’s an ok album that is mostly just it’s best song. Nothing more. 5.2/10

The first half grows in short bursts toward the familiar "There She Goes". Not quite unremarkable pop, but definitely past-worshipping for '90. On the other hand, a band that can move lithely through varied emotional terrain. The second half stretches a bit more, in the way debut albums tend to do - partially successful. But that eight-minute closer is, more than the hit, what makes this a curious album in retrospect. I suppose that's the way it goes: Sometimes you end on that note and then just fade.

I thought I hadn't heard of the La's before but apparently I have. Timeless Melody! I know this from Pearl Jam bootlegs. I knew it was a cover but never bothered to look up the original. Great song. "There She Goes" - Again, I've heard this but never knew or looked up the author. I guess their biggest hit. Makes sense, feel like I remember this from various 90's rom-com type things. Overall, a pretty good record. It's a genre I enjoy so I'm probably biased. Not world shattering.

It's OK not bad but not super exciting either. As many people have said not quite sure why this got picked over other similar (better) albums from the time.

So this is the album that has "There She Goes" - good to know! The album as a whole is decent, but other than the well-known hit I already mentioned, I wouldn't say there's anything else on this album that really grabbed me.

Really enjoyed this, only knew one song well, but it wasn't even the one I liked most. My favourites were son of a gun, doledrum, timeless melody, and the absolute best was looking glass. Just wish they had done more, but better one 5 🌟 album than five 1 🌟 ones!

Was okay, a few decent songs

Non very imaginative song writing, but a fun little listen 1-2 songs at a time. I almost didn't even listen to this because of "There She Goes": one of the most annoying songs I've heard. Knock Me Down and Son of a Gun were standouts on this album. I'm glad that I gave it a chance.

This is a solid album. It's wild that it's their only album. As a stand-alone album, separate from any story about why it's their only, it's just really solid edgy organic rock with a nice pop feel, and I don't mean "pop" in a negative way. They have a feel for songwriting and song performing, even though I've read they don't like how the album came out. "There She Goes," the one song of their with which I was familiar already, is still one of my favorite songs. Something about that song makes it stand the test of time for me; sounds like it could've been written in the 60s or today.

"There She Goes" is an absolutely perfect song and it's understandable why it is the ubiquitous soundtrack to every joyful moment in the 90s (and the "Gilmore Girls" pilot). If I were to go to Tower Records back in the day and get the album it came from because I liked this song so much, I would have had certain expectations I wanted it to live up to. This was always the gamble when buying an album. Well, I should have bought it then, because it delivered! I love this music. The first other standout song to me was "Doldrum." Next were "I Can't Sleep" and "Feelin'." But there was nothing I didn't enjoy on this jangly, awesome album!

All I knew ahead of time is There She Goes, mostly from So I Married an Axe Murderer (which I watched again this summer and it has held up pretty well). I like this album! Different songs remind me of different bands --- lots of REM sounds, a bit of U2 and The Beatles, British Invasion era Rolling Stones and The Kinks, and even an iota of The Monkees. None of that is bad. The song Feelin' has me feelin' pretty darn good. (It's just too short!) Would have rated it a 4 after the first listen. Rounding up to 5 after the second.

I’ve loved “There She Goes” since it came out and listen to it routinely still, but for some reason remained unfamiliar with the rest of this album. The opening song “Son of a Gun” is easy-breezy and drew me in immediately. Really liked “Timeless Melody.” Seems like I’m in for some nice 90’s pop… There were several nautical-themed tracks that I am adding to my boat playlist - “Liberty Ship” and “Doldrums”. “Feelin’” is catchy as hell. As the album progresses the darker tones become increasingly obvious (“Freedom Song”, “Failure”). This culminates in “Looking Glass” where the poppy confection struggles and drowns as you realize just how dark a circus this has been.

Like Smashmouth but bad. Utterly forgettable except for "There She Goes" which, yes, is the song you think it is.

First listen. There she goes is the song I know the La's for is a classic. I've heard it on the radio as well from several movies. The rest of the album was new to me. 2/5

Wat is 'There she goes' toch een geweldig nummer! Rest is ook prima luisterbaar, maar gaat net wat stroever mijn oren in.

Mooi dat hitje en ik vind die nineties sound tof, maar de plaat in zijn geheel wat wisselend.

Op het ene hitje na kende ik dit niet, maar vond het best ok eigenlijk. Ga ik nog eens luisteren.

Five stars for ‘There She Goes’, one of the finest compositions. The rest is pretty middling to me to be honest, good just not great. Cover art is sick.

The album starts pretty strong with Son of a Gun into I can't sleep. There She Goes is a 90 movies classic bop.

The Blah’s

These are some tight songs! Well-performed, excellent guitar work especially. Largely upbeat, fun jangle pop with a sort of indie/britpop edge. Looking Glass is also a killer closer. Grateful to have heard this.

This sort of pop-tinged garage rock is usually something I would be drawn to, but I was mostly bored with this album. They could have edited several songs off of this and had a better album. I'm really not a fan of Mavers' raspy-whiny voice. The obvious star track is "There She Goes," which has been embedded in our collective cultural brain since 1990. It's a pretty perfect pop song with the best hook that will not let you go. Most of these songs I'm fine not hearing again though. Fave songs: There She Goes, Looking Glass

This album grew on me. I suppose people think of There She Goes but I found myself re-listening to a number of tracks, especially all the F’s: Freedom Song, feelin’, and Failure. Makes me want to learn more about this group.

I really liked the style combination here of Britpop and Liverpool. Very raw, but a couple of the tracks felt too underdeveloped. Did not know “There She Goes” was originally theirs. Of the albums I’ve heard for the first time, this one I’ve liked best.

This seems like a perfect album for the transition from gloomy 80's Brit rock to more upbeat Brit pop. Feels like a direct gateway to Oasis, but even Ned's Atomic Dustbin or Teenage Fanclub before them. There She Goes has been so overplayed that I can't stand listening to it, but the other tracks are quite solid. I Can't Sleep and Timeless Melody are catchy but with enough musical and vocal edge to it. Doledrum reminds me of another British band & song that I can't quite put my finger on, though the guitar work is a bit too poppy for me. But maybe it was intended to be more rockabilly like Feelin' sounds like. Overall, I'd say that even when one song might let me down a bit, the very next song picked me right back up. A very solid album.

It was ok. My initial reaction was "I've never heard of this band" and then heard "There She Goes" and said, "Oh, I know this song." I enjoyed the album but don't think I'd go out of my way to listen again.

This sounds like the answer to the question that nobody asked: "What if we created a band that bridges the gap between REM and Dave Matthews?" The singer sounds constipated. I get that this was released in 1990 and predated/started the Britpop movement (which I love) BUT as a result I could find a number of records that sound similar but are much better. Also, that bass tone sounds like a fart... Highlights: The call/answer vocals in "I Can't Sleep"; There She Goes is a great song; Feelin' is good too.

This album grew on me as I listened, though I hated it at first. Overall, it's a decent album, but I'm not sure how it made this list. The La's are clearly rooted in early-60's rock (I heard the Animals and Yardbirds in there, specifically), but they showed up about 25 years too late and didn't really add anything too it. It just sounds like an album that came out in '64. To their credit, in retrospect "There She Goes" and "The Looking Glass" were a preview of what 90's popular music would become. Kudos for that, but - as an album? It's okay.

OK this is just really not good. I don't absolutely hate it either, but I really can't hear anything good about this. It's really uninteresting and seems to have no redeeming qualities. Just not good music.

Pretty good, had never heard of them but clear how much influence this album had on Oasis and various other Brit bands from the 90s. Would relisten.

A surprisingly enjoyable album to listen to. Mostly calm and melodic, the album doesn't feel samey in any place and the lead vocalist has a great voice.

Mostly nondescript but catchy songs. Recognized "There She Goes" from every movie ever. Everything else was new to me. I liked "Liberty Ship" and "All By Myself". There aren't really any standouts but there are no bad songs on the album, and the songs that are on there tend to grow on you.

Pretty confused on how this album is included in a "must listen before you die" list. It's just generic early 90s alt rock, nothing special to it at all.

I only knew "There She Goes" from this ("There She Goes" is a 5). So based on that perfect pop song, along with the fact it's on this list, I was expecting great things. It's not the perfect pop album some claim it is. You know what is the perfect pop album from a similar time? "Girlfriend" by Matthew Sweet. Girlfriend is a 5, and somehow that perfect pop album isn't on this list. But The La's is? I don't get it. The album is fine, it just doesn't need to be on this list. Put Matthew Sweet on here instead. Still love "There She Goes" though. But one perfect song does not a great album make.

Nothing particularly offensive about it but just pretty bland. Once you get past There She Goes the quality does drop off quite a lot, and the play counts drop off as you'd expect. The last 3 proper tracks on the album are particularly weak.
