This list is just endless random British bands. I liked a couple of songs, I already forget who they reminded me of (some 90s band) but this was not a "must hear" by any stretch.

Generic '90s rock that aims to big, but not in ways that work for me. They still have too much competition in this genre and this era.

Of course I’ve heard the name, but I’ve never listened to a single song. This was agony. The singer had a lot of enthusiasm. I cannot understand why this band is so popular.

Another pre-group joining repeat. Here's my original comment: "Title track sounds like a Bond theme. Pretty overblown. Could do without the strings and the harp. Memorable songs, but with the orchestrations and earnestness of the voice, I don't plan to listen again."

Highlights: Everything Must Go, The Girl Who Wanted to Be God, Australia, Interiors. If I had known about this band when I was 16 they would've been my favorite band in the whole world. It's good 90s alternative.

Both the band and this album are completely new to me. I like their sound. Strong writing and real nice performances. I like that they cover a bit of ground across these tracks -- doesn't overdo one single style. I'm glad I got to hear this one.

As something of a 90s Indie kid I have always been aware of the Manics without listening to their full albums. All the hits are here and it definitely transported me back to my teenage years

For some reason I keep losing my notes that I make while actually listening to this album. However, if you've been listening to albums from this list for a while, you've already heard this album in one form or another. It's a Britpop album from the 90s-00s that is not interesting or original and has no business being on this list. Many albums on this list I don't like, but I understand why they were included. Other albums, like this, are clearly just here because the author of the list was a fan during their youth. It's something we would all fall victim to if we tried to compile a list of 1000 great albums, and yet I still choose to be shitty about it anyway because I am an anonymous stranger on the internet. Perfectly okay, but a bit maximalist and just too big for my tastes. I confess to some bias: my slots for this type of band and from this era have long been filled to capacity (and then some).

I recognized the name of these guys, but had no idea what their music sounded like until now. It was actually pretty decent. There were several moments that really caught my attention. I'll likely return to this one in the future. Good, but not great.

I really thoroughly enjoyed this album. I liked the vocals, I like the instrumentals, it makes me want to check out more from this band. I was sad to read about the disappearance of the main lyricist before this album though. My favorite tracks were A Design for Life, Enola/Alone, Small Black Flowers The Grow In The Sky, The Girl Who Wanted to Be God, Interiors, Further Away, and No Surface All Feeling. I gave it the big like on Spotify. Overall very solid, liked it a lot!

This one was totally new to me - the band and the album - but I enjoyed their sound.

Hadn't heard of these guys before. Fun listen if not very unique for 1996. I'll definitely be checking out their other stuff

I've never heard of this band, nor heard this album before. I didn't like it at first, but the more I listened, it had a certain energy and feel that really started to grow on me.

Anthemic and grand without dropping into being too cheesy. I was worried how this would be after a sound change and the mysterious disappearance of their guitarist after the last album, but man this absolutely delivered.

Good blend of raw and polished with a superb vocal delivery. The thing that elevates this album for me is the sonic diversity though, staying well within the niche while exploring the space fully.

So I have tried to get into The MSP at other times and have found them too bombastic, too Queen-like (I hate Queen), self-indgent, etc.. And this album started out giving me a similar impression. But halfway through, specifically with the song; The Girl Who Wanted to be God, my opinion started to turn and U actually liked every song right to the end of the album. The songs seemed to get simpler, more direct, less overblown and just plain better. 3.5 🌟

It was solid. The harp on some songs was unexpected and not unwelcome. Otherwise, there's nothing particularly attention-grabbing about it. I like when the band has a quirk or something weird I can latch on to and Manic Street Preachers doesn't have that, at least on this album.

Yeah, it was ok. Some banging choons individually to be fair but as an album I thought it was all a bit samey. Not one I’d be reaching for too regularly but would give the odd song a listen.

Pretty enjoyable, would jam again.

Good 90s vibes

Not too bad, some good songs on there but a bit long

This album is very good. I feel like the only song that make it onto the radio or TV of Manic Street Preachers in the 90s was If You Tolerate This (very good song and terrifying music video). However I think I have heard most of these songs before. Australia and Design for Life are very good. I think last time I had checked in with Manic Street Preachers it much have been in the early 2000s as Richey was still an open missing person. I spent some time reading the Wikipedia on the band and found he was declared dead in 2008. Really tragic figure and it’s important he was discussing depression and mental health in the 90s when that wasn’t a subject discussed in pop culture. Likely would have been treated differently had they been around 20 years later.

Iv only ever heard Manic’s hits before which I really like but have never done a deeper dive into a full album. This is a great 90’s British rock album. Makes me think I have under estimated how good this band is. From what I have read about the Manics I will be doing a deeper dive into their earlier albums.

Its ok. I think I was too old for this to have the desired impact when it came out. Musically very good but doesn't grab me like original punk did.

Después de la primera vuelta de este disco me sentí un poco mal por haberles puesto atención hasta ahora aunque bastante feliz por haber escuchado esta chulada de disco. Solos discretos, riffs muy agradables y pegajosos, letras no tan obvias pero tampoco tan rebuscadas hacen de este disco un gran descubrimiento porque aunque tenga 26 años del disco, realmente parece poco escuchado si tomamos como referencia las reproducciones de Spotify. 4.5 que subo a 5 porque en verdad lo disfruté. No me esperaba ver a esta banda aquí. Me gustan mucho, pero siento que es de esas que la gente siempre ha ignorado un poco y a mi me parece que tienen mucho que ofrecer. Me gusta que son rock muy honesto, directo de la época del Brit Pop, pero a la vez tan distinto al mismo Brit Pop que quedan en otra categoría. En una época en la que sonar "rough around the edges" (o incluso peor) y tener actitud de borracho y malhumorado, llega este disco que está muy bien pulido en toda la instrumentación y en el que la voz y la pronunciación sí están cuidadas.

It didn’t sound or feel very different from The Holy Bible, their previous album, which was on my list a while back. It was fine. It just didn’t break new ground or offer anything different. Not sure why both of these albums need to be on the list when they’re essentially the exact same. This album art is definitely an improvement over the other one though!

Decent album. Have tried to get into MSP in the past with limited success, but enjoyed this listen more than in the past. A Design for Life easily my favorite. 3/5

Works just right as a bit of Welsh britpoprock

Normally, I would like something like this, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Some songs were good, but I also hated others. I'm torn, I don't know. Not a fan of his voice either.

Lijepo sam iznenađena ovim albumom. Nije mi bio wau ali je solidan i lagan za slušat. Enola/Alone mi je bila brutalna pjesma koju ću i dalje slušat.

Album nije loš, ima dobrih trenutaka, ali mi nije sjeo onako kako sam mislio, a mislio sam tako da će mi bit bar sigurna trojka. Međutim nećkam se jer vjerovatno bar sada ne mislim se vraćat na ovaj album, čak nijednu pjesmu nemam za izdvojiti. Nije da su pjesme loše, nego su onak zaboravljive, neć ih se sjećat sigurno nakon dan-dva.

Really not my kind of music. Didn't listen to the full album as I got a headache by song 4. But I did the appreciate alternative lyrics and can see why this would be on the list. Interesting to read about the band leader's story.

I feel very indifferent about this album. Mostly sounds like filler songs on an Oasis album but never climbs to the heights that Oasis could. The musicians are good but this didn't grab me.

I can't believe I have never listened to Manic Street Preachers before!!! The first song had me hooked. The strings throughout are so good

Terrible noise, I'm surprised anybody likes them.

Another band that I've tried to get into at various points and never really jived with. There are a handful of really good songs on here but the overall album is too sonically samey. More stylistic and vocal variation and this would be a great album. As it stands, it gets kind of tiresome in the second half and would work better as an EP.

I wasn't too familiar with this band so I had just assumed that they were Britpop like Blur or Oasis, so this album was a pleasant surprise and was an enjoyable listen during a long drive. Would listen again, but can’t give it 5 stars because the album was solid but not an outstanding masterpiece.

Some classics

"Everything Must Go" is everything a great alternative rock band is expected to be. Melodic, a bit heavy, with aggressive yet clear vocals. Lyrically, the Manic Street Preachers are preaching and in a way grieving. Sad, yet an example of how mysterious circumstances surrounding a coworker, a loved one, a brother, can make its way into an album by a harder embracing of their legacy, and the struggle to move from under that shadow. "Everything Must Go" is an ambitious album as a result and earns a spot in a normal rotation.

Decent 90s alt rock album. Nothing super special stood out to me though.

Some of this was a little over-the-top symphonic swirling. This round of britpop wasn't as good as as others.

Another great album by this group. It didn't hit quite as hard as 'The Holy Bible', but the songs still had that same catchy, aggressive pop punk tone that I'm a fan of.

Ab dem ‚Entwurf fürs Leben‘ helfen Streicher entsetzlich schönen, lauten Gitarren und empört rauer Stimme James Dean Bradfields eine schiere Perfektion vom Stapel zu feuern, bei der sich Wucht und Songwriting Hand in Hand auf den walisischen Klippen stehend allem zu trotzen bereit ist. Erstaunlicher als diese geschmiert laufende Hitmaschine war damals für mich nur der Umstand, wie brachial diese Perlen live über die Marshalls in die Crowd geknüppelt werden - ganz zu schweigen von den nicht nur vorderen Reihen härtester Pogo-Kultur unterm Drachen Banner. Seit dem Erlebnis müssen alle Songs der Manics ein, zwei Tacken lauter gespielt werden. Un-Removable 4.9

Wenn Theatralik, dann gern diese hier. Dennoch muss ich leider feststellen, dass diese Platte, die an meinem in reichhaltigerer Fülle badenden jüngeren Ich etwas ungeschmeckt vorbeifloss meine verwitterte Gestalt nicht mehr ganz so anrührt. So bleiben mir die ewigen A Hits Design For Life, Eveything Must Go, The Girl Who Wanted To Be God und No Surface All Feeling auf ewig Hits, während der Rest dahinter leider verschwindet. 3,9 aber natürlich für immer!

Ok album. Less of an edge than the other MSP album since they lost the main singer and songwriter. Don’t think I’d revisit this one much. 5.4/10

Great rock album by Manic Street Preachers with the sublime songs A Design for Life and Everything Must Go.

Listened to this album a couple of times. Enjoyed some of the tracks including A Design for Life and title track Everything Must Go. The group sounds good and there are some interesting lyrics, but the tunes just didn’t stick with me.

I was initially turned off to this. "Kevin Carter" in particular, just seemed like a wall of noise. But as the album progressed, I warmed to it more and more. I appreciated the album more and more, particularly the title track. Watch the videos for it, I think it gives it more dimension.

Tough one to rate. First off, if you've never or barely heard of them, they're better than you think. This album is quintessential MSP - a more adult alternative rock with lyrics a mix of observational perspective of everyday life (e.g., A Design for Life, Kevin Carter) or political (e.g., Elvis Impersonator, Everything Must Go). If you put together their best songs from the 90s you'd have a great album. This one is just good. I hate the term Britpop because I feel most of those bands were rock, like these guys. Softer vocals and more instrumental mixes then you get with American rock (and its angst or edge) but their guitar/bass/drum work is still good (check out Enola/Alone or Australia, or Sleepflower on the album Gold against the Soul). It couldn't stay grunge forever and they can rock. But they mix it up, not unlike some of the new American alternative at the time like Third Eye Blind. In the end, the album is a bit uneven.

I remember hearing about this band years ago but the album that was suggested was "The Holy Bible." I think I didn't listen to it because of the freaky album cover. I know that makes no sense coming from a guy that loves Aphex Twin. I regret that now. This band is amazing and unlike my last listen I enjoyed it enough to go on to the bonus tracks (although I don't include them in the rating of the album but they're good too). Great use of orchestrion on the album. Some of the guitar also reminded my of Alex Lifeson for some reason (Enola / Alone in particular). This is a definitely a band I'll be exploring more of!

HOW HAVE I NEVER LISTENED TO THIS BAND?? I loved every minute of this album. Another band I had heard of but hadn't heard. This 1001 albums thing is so great for finding music that I haven't listened to but should have. As I listened to the songs and read the lyrics (including looking into the background of a lot of the lyrics) I kept coming back to the phrase "depressing lyrics/soaring songs." It's an unusual juxtaposition that really works. The album background is difficult - their first album after guitarist and songwriter Richey James disappeared without a trace (he was declared dead many years later but never found). I really liked the songwriting and in particular the guitar sound. I kept wondering if guitarist James Dean Bradfield was influenced by Alex Lifeson because he uses a lot of unusual chord voicings similar to Alex...later found an article where the Manics interviewed Rush. Apparently they're huge fans. Makes sense given the guitar sound (but not their songwriting - that's very different). Looking forward to digging into their catalog - I see The Holy Bible is also in the 1001 album list and I'm sure I'll be listening to that soon.

Pretty good album from a band I hadn’t heard of.

Lots of tunes, if not exactly hooks, here. Aside from the lyrical references to other nations, there were hints of glam and even math rock near the end.

I wasn’t familiar with this band. I liked the songs on this album. My only complaint is that most of the songs felt like there was a bit too much going on. A bit frenetic, or dare I say “manic”. I think the songs could use a little more space to breathe. A little more focus on the space between the notes. But overall I liked it. 3 stars.

Really good vocals. However I didn't find any of the songs that catchy and nothing stood out to me too much. The songs felt a bit melded into one but that could be because I've only listened to it once. I might listen to it again but for a rock/britpop band (with that kinda thing being my go-to genre) I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd wished. Favourite song: Removables.

Liked Removables and Australia. Interesting and different cadence with lyrics in many songs. Needs stronger bass in some songs to balance high notes.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this. Melodies and music are solid, but the vocals are all over the place.

Good tunes, and a solid brit pop foundation. Over all it was an easy record to listen to, and it ended up bleeding over in to their other work. I wouldn't say that this stands out especially significantly against other tracks from the same band.

It is an alright album. I do not believe I have heard any of these songs previously. Not sure I would willfully choose to listen to the album again, but I would listen to it again if it were playing.

Better than I remember it being (I lived through britpop, it wasn't good). Imagine better if you haven't heard Design For Life played over and over again for decades. Prefer The Holy Bible.

First album without Richie Edwards and it shows. The sound of a band deliberately making the leap from clubs to stadiums. Still sounds great.

All of the songs were really good. Each one had a different feel but still connected. Really liked the vocals.

Los van een paar nummers nooit echt een fervent aanhanger van de manische straat predikanten geworden.

Ik vind MSP tof. Niets kan wat mij betreft toppen aan de opvolger van deze plaat, maar desalniettemin geslaagd.

Best goede band en ze hebben een aantal hele toffe nummers. Maar het laatste kwart van dit album begon het kille en bozige geschreeuw me toch wat tegen te staan.

Mooie stem, mooie sfeer. Wordt er wel altijd een beetje somber van.

Manic Street Preachers kuuluu bändeihin, joiden nimen tiedän ja musiikkityylinkin noin suunnilleen, mutta en osaa nimetä yhtään biisiä. Nyt tämän levyn jälkeen ehkä osaan sanoa tuon Everything Must Go. En oikein ymmärrä mikä tässä viehättää, aika tasapaksua britti(?)rokkia ysäriltä. Verve ja Coldplay hoitavat taiteellisen puolen paremmin, Oasis menevämpää ja helpommin omaksuttavampaa.

I kind of forgot I was listening to this as I was listening to it but it has everything you could want in some good old guitar Brit rock. I definitely hear it’s influence over the second half of the 90s and early 2000s. Plus the tragic backstory is so compelling and mystifying

When I was at school, the Manics were the most impossibly edgy indie band, probably because they were a little more angular than the Britpoppers and sometimes slagged off politicians. Listening now, it's pretty good, fine, okay music with some decent hooks and more than a dollop of pop - and even soft rock - elements in the mix. 'A Design For Life' remains the best cut, probably because it sounds like Jellyfish, albeit not quite as good.

Major Queen vibes. I’ve never heard of this band. I love the use of strings. Feels like some ELO influence as well

MANIC STREET PREACHERS - Everything Must Go Grupo Galés nacido a mediados de los 90 que le tocó convivir con monstruos ingleses como Oasis, Blur, Keane, …. Un estilo de música rock tirando a independiente y con una buena base en las guitarras, percusión y bastante Ritmo y un vocalistas a mi juicio bueno pero que quizá le falta algo de fuerza en algunas canciones. Entrando en el disco, se podría decir que el trabajo está por encima de la media de los trabajos que hacían los grupos de la época. El comienzo con “Elvis Impresionator” me ha parecido que evocaba a la nostalgia. “Kevin Carter” es una canción con mucha fuerza. La “Enola / Alone” me recuerda a las guitarra de la época, de Oasis. “Every thing Must Go” es la canción que brilla en este disco; es esa canción que dice aquí estoy, existo y tengo mucho que decir. Se podría decir que es la reivindicación del grupo. “Removables” es una clara canción influenciada por el Grunge. La última canción que querría destacar es “Australia”; Con un comienzo de percusión al más puro estilo The Who, la canción cambia para ser un Rock con unos muy buenos rifts de guitarra. Lo he tenido que escuchar varias veces. Si lo hubiera escuchado una sola vez quizá mi nota sería un 2 pero después de haberlo escuchado unas 4 veces, la última esta mañana le doy un 3,5 / 5. Aunque aquí no conozcamos mucho a este grupo creo que es fiel representante del Pop/Rock de la segunda parte de los años 90. Creo que el problema que han tenido todos estos grupos ingleses es que han vivido eclipsados por grupos como Blur y por su puesto Oasis.

New album to me and truly nothing grabbed me. Bad version of standard 90s pop rock IMO

Tom said it best when he called this "Generic 90s rock". That sounds like a slam, but this was highly enjoyable. Sometimes you need generic 90s rock! I really liked a lot of the acoustic sets and remixes at the end. The album really helped me get through my workday today. But let's be real, this isn't getting anything higher than 3 stars.

Bubblegum pop, even most of the good stuff (and this is well crafted) -- just not my thing.

I can hang with this record. The guitars are so freaking loud in the mix, ha. It’s almost overwhelming at times, but I bet this would have been fun as hell to see live at a festival in the UK in 1997. I both hate and like this guy’s voice? It’s definitely a thing. I’ll defer to Alex and file it away as one of those rock bands that was popular in the UK and not in the US for whatever reason (see: Travis, Biffy Clyro, etc.)

Not bad. Nothing jumped out as a four or five star song on first listen but it was a sound I would give a few more listens to see if something grew on me.

Rock solid breakdown at the end of Enola/Alone. Same as No Surface All Feeling. Nothing I haven't heard before but can't knock it.

Great indie-rock album. Maintains the classic sound of the late '90s without feeling dated or tired. The more synth-heavy, balladish tracks lose me but most everything on here rocks.

Jos Oasis oli teinivuosien ykkösbändi, niin tämä oli sitten varmaan kakkonen. Viimeiseen 15 vuoteen tämän kuuntelu sitten onkin jäänyt melkein nollaan. Kenties bändin uudempien levyjen kehnous on karkoittanut minut myös vanhemmasta tuotannosta. Ensimmäinen reaktio nähdessäni levyn listalla oli ehkä jopa negatiivinen - jaa tätä, ei kyllä kiinnosta yhtään enää nykyään. Onneksi ennakkoluuloni osoittautuivat vääräksi, ja tämähän kuulostikin oikein mainiolta ja jopa tuoreelta liian pitkäksi venyneen tauon jälkeen. Varsinkin vähän rokkaavammat biisit (Enola/Alone, Kevin Carter yms) toimivat kuin junan vessa. Vaikkei Everything Must Go ole ollut ihan suosikkilevyni Manicsilta, sai tämä ainakin minut innostumaan taas palaamaan niiden suurimpien helmien (tai ainakin Holy Biblen) pariin. Kovaa painia on nelosen ja vitosen välillä, mutta kun vertaa muihin antamiini nelosiin niin parempihan tämä on.

I feel like the songs have good sounds but it was oddly generic and had nothing that made them sound unique. I have to wonder if maybe they were originators of some sounds that later influenced artists I do know. I feel the need to research the history of this band more

Really interesting style and great production. Great album overall

Middle of the road. A lot of the songs strike the same tone, use the same chords, use the same chord patterns, and are at similar tempos with similarly mediocre singing. This made it difficult to differentiate song from song and led to a lot of the songs blending together. No one song felt distinct - while none of them were terrible, none were standouts. Most of the album was fairly bland. Unlike other alternative bands of the 90s (Green Day comes to mind) the personality behind the singing seems lacking. 2.5/5

wasnt expecting this to be the first manic street preachers album i listened to but thats just how it is with this bitch of a site . its pretty good. not planning on doing much music writing today so ill keep it short. i cant make out what the fuck theyre saying so maybe the lyrics are exclusively about how much they hate me, personally, but the guitars are pretty warm and enveloping and its a nice time. its catchy. u know how it is 9/10
