Interesting tunes. Not too bad.

When the album is good, it's really good. Songs like Everything Must Go and Design for Life really soar... they drive forward with energy and rhythm that is really enjoyable. There's a couple more that approach that energy that make it a very close 4, but there's just a few too many tracks that aren't particularly memorable. Still good.

One of those bands that I think I would have loved had I come across it at the right time. But now I always feel a bit irritated when starting to listen to them, but 5 song in I'm still listening who knows

This was not bad, but it mist some spice to be actually good. Some songs grew on me during 2nd listen

Repetitive and generally just okay. Felt like a worse version of Oasis

I lil sink of the heart again as for some reason I took against the Manics in the 00s. I enjoyed this album. Not a full concert but my hate has subsided.

Bit forgettable, but alright to listen to.

It was okay. Nothing stood out to me.

Different than I expected - more rock, less R&B? but good.

Well, it's a good album if you like the Manics - and I do - but it's not their best and it might not be the best introduction to an otherwise awesome band. Talking from a Manics fan - it's wonderfully arranged and produced - and contains 'A Design for Life', and 'Kevin Carter' - and it's fun to revisit. But in the pantheon of a 1001 albums - it's not among the greatest.

Not a massive fan of the MSP. Their themes seem to overreach as much as Bradfield voice. The odd orchestration seems out of kilter too. I admire the ambition as some kind of Welsh punk Springsteen. but it doesn't work for me.

Couple of good songs, not sure I got hook

You can definitely feel the members of Manic Street Preachers have lost someone close to them, both through the lyrics and the music. And while tragic for a band member to be missing and later presumed dead, the emotional tormoil makes an interesting listen. Unfortunaltely I didn't love the album as I only really liked a few songs aside from the imagery. Small Black Flowers and Design For Life were my favourites.

Cracker

I remember it being better. Some crackers. Some fillers

De este disco me gustan las 3 con las que empiez fuerte "Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier", "A Design for Life", "Kevin Carter" y luego "The Girl Who Wanted to Be God". Interesante.

Promoted above its station. (‘Motorcycle Emptiness’, in and of itself, stands as proof of this.) It’s a better-than-ok album, but (1) its primary utility was to introduce me to MSPs back catalogue, which I was only vaguely aware of before then, and (2) I guess is a ‘narrative’ album - the narrative the press latching on to here being Richey Edwards - the REM palaver, ‘For Real’, and finally his disappearance. Lots of people (like me) knew about all this without actually knowing their music.

Just ok, melhor música: No surface all feeling

Oooh! I like this. The 90s are growing on me lately. Mixing of genres, embracing and evolving the grunge, and in the case of Manic Street Preachers, building nicely on alternative. Songs on this album are typical structure for the 90s, and no filler!

Firmly fine Britpop that lacks the ability to do anything but go all out at all times. Sometimes subtlety is nice!

Early 90s, British emo by skinny, white guys who look like they've been locked in a cellar their whole lives.

I dunno. Post-grunge with a Cool Cymru twist?

This was kind of cool - the singer sounds like he needed to be in a hair metal band

3,6 not great, not terrible.

Generic '90s rock that aims to big, but not in ways that work for me. They still have too much competition in this genre and this era.

Another pre-group joining repeat. Here's my original comment: "Title track sounds like a Bond theme. Pretty overblown. Could do without the strings and the harp. Memorable songs, but with the orchestrations and earnestness of the voice, I don't plan to listen again."

Highlights: Everything Must Go, The Girl Who Wanted to Be God, Australia, Interiors. If I had known about this band when I was 16 they would've been my favorite band in the whole world. It's good 90s alternative.

It was OK despite having tracks which were op

Both the band and this album are completely new to me. I like their sound. Strong writing and real nice performances. I like that they cover a bit of ground across these tracks -- doesn't overdo one single style. I'm glad I got to hear this one.

Perfectly okay, but a bit maximalist and just too big for my tastes. I confess to some bias: my slots for this type of band and from this era have long been filled to capacity (and then some).

I recognized the name of these guys, but had no idea what their music sounded like until now. It was actually pretty decent. There were several moments that really caught my attention. I'll likely return to this one in the future. Good, but not great.

It was ok. Easy to listen to but not sure if I’d listen to it again.

Liked it but not quite enough to buy the CD.

Didn't immediately grab me. I think I can learn to appreciate it over time. The problem is there are a few generic sounding songs up front that lose me. Favorite tracks: Kevin Carter, Small Black Flowers That Grow in the Sky, Removables, Australia

I've never heard of this band, nor heard this album before. I didn't like it at first, but the more I listened, it had a certain energy and feel that really started to grow on me.

Honestly not bad

So I have tried to get into The MSP at other times and have found them too bombastic, too Queen-like (I hate Queen), self-indgent, etc.. And this album started out giving me a similar impression. But halfway through, specifically with the song; The Girl Who Wanted to be God, my opinion started to turn and U actually liked every song right to the end of the album. The songs seemed to get simpler, more direct, less overblown and just plain better. 3.5 🌟

It was solid. The harp on some songs was unexpected and not unwelcome. Otherwise, there's nothing particularly attention-grabbing about it. I like when the band has a quirk or something weird I can latch on to and Manic Street Preachers doesn't have that, at least on this album.

Yeah, it was ok. Some banging choons individually to be fair but as an album I thought it was all a bit samey. Not one I’d be reaching for too regularly but would give the odd song a listen.

Pretty enjoyable, would jam again.

Good 90s vibes

Not too bad, some good songs on there but a bit long

Its ok. I think I was too old for this to have the desired impact when it came out. Musically very good but doesn't grab me like original punk did.

Ágætis rokkalbúm.

Very solid instrumentals. A bit hard to wrap myself in the lyrics

It didn’t sound or feel very different from The Holy Bible, their previous album, which was on my list a while back. It was fine. It just didn’t break new ground or offer anything different. Not sure why both of these albums need to be on the list when they’re essentially the exact same. This album art is definitely an improvement over the other one though!

Decent album. Have tried to get into MSP in the past with limited success, but enjoyed this listen more than in the past. A Design for Life easily my favorite. 3/5

pretty average Britpop

Quite pop-ier than their previous albums. A new direction for the band: invigorating music with the author's usual nihilism. (5/10) FT: A Design for Life

Good album

Brit pop goes good and bad in my life. This ain't the right side of good.

Works just right as a bit of Welsh britpoprock

Normally, I would like something like this, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Some songs were good, but I also hated others. I'm torn, I don't know. Not a fan of his voice either.

Pleasantly full-hearted stuff. 6/10

Solid, but not super mind blowing, 90s rock. Seems to share some space with the likes of Blur. I liked parts but I don't think I'll really be revisiting it. Favorite tracks: "Kevin Carter", "Enola / Alone"

A low 3. Really don’t like Australia or Kevin Carter. Not surprised that the singles from this album had no Richey James co writes.

The beginning of the end for a great band

Another band that I've tried to get into at various points and never really jived with. There are a handful of really good songs on here but the overall album is too sonically samey. More stylistic and vocal variation and this would be a great album. As it stands, it gets kind of tiresome in the second half and would work better as an EP.

Solid effort

Decent 90s alt rock album. Nothing super special stood out to me though.

decent album, surprised they managed to create the album after their main lyricist left like he did

Sounds well but it is not the type of music that Id like.

Inoffensive but nothing ground-breaking. A few good songs.

'Tis an OK album.

Title track sounds like a Bond theme. Pretty overblown. Could do without the strings and the harp. Memorable songs, but with the orchestrations and earnestness of the voice, I don't plan to listen again.

Yup heard this one, bit mainstream after holy bible

Good album, very clear how sounds like these influenced 2000s punk. I like it quite a bit, but mostly for its influence.

Wasn't amazing, wasn't bad. Very middle of the road for me. A three for sure.

1996: Design For Life, Enola/Alone, Australia

Listened to this album a couple of times. Enjoyed some of the tracks including A Design for Life and title track Everything Must Go. The group sounds good and there are some interesting lyrics, but the tunes just didn’t stick with me.

I was initially turned off to this. "Kevin Carter" in particular, just seemed like a wall of noise. But as the album progressed, I warmed to it more and more. I appreciated the album more and more, particularly the title track. Watch the videos for it, I think it gives it more dimension.

Pretty good album from a band I hadn’t heard of.

Lots of tunes, if not exactly hooks, here. Aside from the lyrical references to other nations, there were hints of glam and even math rock near the end.

I wasn’t familiar with this band. I liked the songs on this album. My only complaint is that most of the songs felt like there was a bit too much going on. A bit frenetic, or dare I say “manic”. I think the songs could use a little more space to breathe. A little more focus on the space between the notes. But overall I liked it. 3 stars.

3/5. First Listen. Has potential. :)

Rock noventero un poco soso.

Really good vocals. However I didn't find any of the songs that catchy and nothing stood out to me too much. The songs felt a bit melded into one but that could be because I've only listened to it once. I might listen to it again but for a rock/britpop band (with that kinda thing being my go-to genre) I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd wished. Favourite song: Removables.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this. Melodies and music are solid, but the vocals are all over the place.

never heard of this before, I liked "Small Black Flowers that Grow in the Sky" and think that all the other songs desperately needed more harp flourishes

Most of the album was to me. It feels very 90's but not offensively so

leuk album, a design for life klinkt bekend in de oren.

Yep. Sounds like a British album from the 90s.

Enjoyable but not really memorable.

Decent mid-90's rock. I was today years old when I realized it's likely Manic (Street Preachers), and not Preachers from Manic Street.

It is an alright album. I do not believe I have heard any of these songs previously. Not sure I would willfully choose to listen to the album again, but I would listen to it again if it were playing.

Better than I remember it being (I lived through britpop, it wasn't good). Imagine better if you haven't heard Design For Life played over and over again for decades. Prefer The Holy Bible.

Favorites: A Design For Life Enola/ Alone Everything Must Go The Girl Who Wanted To Be God Removables

Libraries gave us power

Average. Nothing too special or memorable

Pretty consistently good album, would listen again

Mooie stem, mooie sfeer.

Nyt tämän levyn jälkeen ehkä osaan sanoa tuon Everything Must Go. En oikein ymmärrä mikä tässä viehättää, aika tasapaksua britti(?)rokkia ysäriltä. Verve ja Coldplay hoitavat taiteellisen puolen paremmin, Oasis menevämpää ja helpommin omaksuttavampaa.

I liked the sound, but not so much that I really had anything to note. Maybe deserves another listen someday. Log Welsh “Cool Cymru” movement for LL.

Fine album, nothis super turned me off from it but nothing stood out as super good in any way

Ok I guess. Didn’t do much for me - seemed average Brit pop. I did like “Removables” and “Further Away”.

Nice but did not impress me

Un poco aburrido, pero no está mal

Not bad, pero no me ha dicho mucho.

When I was at school, the Manics were the most impossibly edgy indie band, probably because they were a little more angular than the Britpoppers and sometimes slagged off politicians. Listening now, it's pretty good, fine, okay music with some decent hooks and more than a dollop of pop - and even soft rock - elements in the mix. 'A Design For Life' remains the best cut, probably because it sounds like Jellyfish, albeit not quite as good.

Didn't enjoy it as much as the others so far

Tom said it best when he called this "Generic 90s rock". That sounds like a slam, but this was highly enjoyable. Sometimes you need generic 90s rock! I really liked a lot of the acoustic sets and remixes at the end. The album really helped me get through my workday today. But let's be real, this isn't getting anything higher than 3 stars.

Bubblegum pop, even most of the good stuff (and this is well crafted) -- just not my thing.

Fine. It just sounds like standard 90's altrock pop from some brits with greasy hair.

I can hang with this record. The guitars are so freaking loud in the mix, ha. It’s almost overwhelming at times, but I bet this would have been fun as hell to see live at a festival in the UK in 1997. I both hate and like this guy’s voice? It’s definitely a thing. I’ll defer to Alex and file it away as one of those rock bands that was popular in the UK and not in the US for whatever reason (see: Travis, Biffy Clyro, etc.)

Major saves the day vibes

Yeah. Ok. I’m surprised at everything Britpop but rare grunge albums.

Not bad. Nothing jumped out as a four or five star song on first listen but it was a sound I would give a few more listens to see if something grew on me.

this kinda britpop is really enjoyable and nostalgic. pretty strings baby :)

enjoyable i liked it. upper 3

really not bad for 1996

Best wel lekker rock albumpje

Seemed a little formless compared to the band's prior entry in this project. Good but vague.

Enjoyable album, great voice

Not as good as their previous one. Something of a 2.5

Alright

Someone likes Freddie Mercury.

I'm feeling Horses Under Starlight, but the rest are unremarkable.

Middle of the road. A lot of the songs strike the same tone, use the same chords, use the same chord patterns, and are at similar tempos with similarly mediocre singing. This made it difficult to differentiate song from song and led to a lot of the songs blending together. No one song felt distinct - while none of them were terrible, none were standouts. Most of the album was fairly bland. Unlike other alternative bands of the 90s (Green Day comes to mind) the personality behind the singing seems lacking. 2.5/5

Britpop

Some interesting songs, but generally kind of borring. Its not bad though.

Design for life is still a banger but it's not holy bible

solid 90s vibes, like the "mr jones" band but with more of a miserable Oasis feel. Either way would listen again

90s alternative rinse repeat.

Brit pop - all songs sound mostly the same

It was okay

Don't mind this but didn't fall in love with it at the time and thirty years on it's still quite average

buen álbum

More Britpop??? I thought these brothers were post punk??? What the fuck??? Anyway this is boring as SHIT dude. I cannot stand these guys. The playing is uninspired, the vocals are annoying, and the topics that the vocals harp on feel more pretentious than radical, especially since they’re using the vehicle of… Britpop. Also, this is corny! People, they’ve got a song called “Enola/Alone!” Can you fucking believe it? There are some okay melodies in there, some okay songs, that much I can confidently say. But it’s still really annoying. Real bad. Do not recommend. 4.8/10

Mid 90s alt rock? I thought for sure this would be right up my alley. Buuuut I was just a fool waiting on the wrong block!

This one is… inoffensive. It's laid back, kinda fun, kinda fine, but not much more. It's not bad, it's just ok.

I could not get into the guys voice.

The album is overall alright, but it's nothing too exciting. It's a bit like what an album from that time would sound like, so nothing unusual, but I am sure it has its fair share of listeners.

another brit-pop album featuring man who can't actually sing, saying absolutely nothing.

ah fuck, is this just straight 90s britpop?? i've known the name of these guys for decades but i guess i'd always assumed given their name that they were like, actually interesting. but if this album is anything to go by they're kinda just another oasis type beat. as someone who grew up while the 90s britpop revival was at its peak, the first 2/3 of this album doesn't really have much to offer. its pretty mid. it does pick up a bit from "australia" onwards but by then id mentally clocked out already and really just wanted to move on with my life. my friends are saying their other albums are better but afaik this is the only one of their albums on this list so once again im kinda just left wondering what we're even doing here.

I respect it, I don’t hate it, but it doesn’t move me at all. So I get a bit fatigued by the end

6/12/26. Perhaps it was because I just received a Manic Street Preachers album a few days ago I wasn't super excited to dive back into them so soon, but still a solid album. Don't think there was much growth from the first album, but still a nice, accessible sound.

As soon as this album was done I forgot all about it. Been a day now, still can't recall a single song off of it. Not that it was really bad, just forgettable.

Oof, I didn't expect this one to be one where I'd have a visceral negative reaction to. It's not awful. It's not even bad, it's really good. But for some reason the vocals are just killing me, and the music isn't really elevating things for me either with it kinda sounding very 90's in a way I'm not a fan of.. The vocals are reminding me kinda of James LaBrie from Dream Theater, who's not a vocalist I particularly like, but he's fine in the context of Dream Theater, whereas the vocals here are absolutely not working for me. But yeah. One of the very few albums where I just don't like it despite it being good.

I did not enjoy this but the wikipedia article made me want to listen to their old stuff maybe for the comparison? It got better over time but the first song physically repelled me.

This man’s voice annoyed me

2.4 Wasnt for me, but I could see how it could be for others

I thought I would like this but it turns out I don't

Mehnic street preachers

ich kann mich an nichts erinnern

Didn't really do much for me. Felt like 90's alt rock junk to me. Kind of got the impression the lyrics might have been really good if I paid closer attention but I just want being pulled in by the music

Só não é pior que Weezer

2+ Stop the brits. It's enough. Sign my petition HERE

not for me

It’s giving opening act energy. I hate to dump on them as they have a produced album and I don’t. I’m saying I’m sure their parents are proud. I just don’t know what executive they convinced this would be the next big thing.

This is the second MSP album I’ve listened to for this project, and it’s no more memorable.

Boring

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: None Dreadfully boring, generic and dull. No standout tracks, nothing catchy, no excitement for me. The only intriguing about this album was in reading about the fourth member who just up an disappeared. And to be clear, not in a sensational, true-crime sort of way, just genuinely intriguing and kind of sad; In particular, some of the discourse that seems to have stemmed from his disappearance, Kurt Cobain's death and self-harm, suicide, depression, drug ab/use and other such goings-on for artists in the 80s and 90s.

I felt nothing. I like the name and thought maybe I had heard / liked something long ago but alas not.

I kept wanting to like it but something was holding me back

Tbh the Richey Edwards disappearance story stayed with me more than the music. I almost liked all of the last three songs.

Idkkkkkk

Very pretentious! Something annoying about how they use syllables.

i guess most britpop is similar to like, korn for me - it's what i grew up with and would be an impossible thing to come around to as a newbie in 2026.

One of the best albums OF ALL TIME? You’ve got to be kidding me.

Too much britpop on list

Just tired of this brand of British pop/rock. A couple of the songs seemed like a fake band that you'd hear in a British movie. Australia stood out. 2.5/5

boring as everything from them

srednie

Everything must go including this album filed under ‘F’ 2/5 (‘cos it’s not hip hop rap) 4/3/26

Honestly I normally really enjoy 90s rock (this feels similar to Blur) but this didn't do it for me. Was just kind of boring? Nothing stood out...

Day788 - i kept thinking through the whole album that ben folds would do this only better

I have heard of Manic Street Preachers before but do not recognise any of the songs. On first listen very unforgettable .

mehhhh

Hardly life changing is it. Sounds like the generic backing track to literally any high school surf movie, really not sure how it’s made it on the list tbh.

Some nice songs in there like Enola/Alone but its globally the type of music that does not catch my attention

Pretty vanilla brit pop rock? I'm sure its someones cup of tea, but its not mine.

I've mostly not complained about the Anglo-centrism of this list, but c'mon. This is some extremely mid mid-90s Britpop stuff. Utterly forgetable.

Sounds dated and preachy, didn’t grab me the way it did in the 1990’s it sounds like the past and not the present.

Not for me

I expected to like this, but it evades me. Jangly, but not in a good way. The vocals become grating after a while. It all feels a bit samey?

Aaaand my next album up is more Brit pop….

so forgettable

While I respect the Manic Street Preachers' disdain for Britpop as it was happening, I find their music incredibly pedestrian and lyrics pretentious. And what is with those terrible orchestral arrangements? The harps on 'Elvis Impersonator: Blackpool Pier' are baroque and egregious.

damn they’re yelling a lot I kinda like it tho. And Blackpool mention. Idk if I like this rn it feels like that image of Lois from family guy with the instruments. oh Enola holmes reference! Oh okay strings on small black flowers. Icl im rushing listening to this… the girl that wanted to be god was ok. Gosh this is very predictable. No surface all feeling is nice. Main problem for me was the vocals not the biggest fan

eeehhh... These guys definitely have their moments.

I skipped through tracks. I'm familiar with the band and A Design for Life being on every car advert ever. No business being on this list. I'm repeating myself but Ænima by Tool and Pinkerton by Weezer both came out in 1996. There isn't a single valid argument I could hear to convince me why MSP made the list and they didn't. 2/5.

Not a fan at all of the voices but vibing with the music when they stop singing 🫠 having a dance party drinking my coffee. Kevin Carter has inspired the Macarena

Don't like the singing style or melodies It feels like they are going for a different feel than what the songs should be. I don't know how to describe it but something is off. Trying too hard to make pop songs into heavier rock 🤷‍♂️

Just very bland and inoffensive.

Good for listening in a radio.

Could never get into them, not back then and not now. It does sound more alternative than britpop, but it had no effect on me.

really bad npc music

I’ve tried over the years to figure out why these guys don’t really do it for me and I’ve never been able to quite put my finger on it. Listening to this I think it’s maybe that I’ve heard other bands do what they do better than this. A lot of this album is somewhat reminiscent of Supergrass’ first album but not as catchy or immediate.

It was enjoyable, but I didn’t love it. I dug the sound and the vibe, but nothing jumped out at me as a favorite new track. I could definitely keep this album in rotation, but I wouldn’t say any favorites came out of listening.

Unfortunately for this band, I got this album the day after I got the Ella Fitzgerald album. So I am acutely aware that the lead singer here has a very thin and not very pleasant voice. I usually don’t mind this alt-pop style of music, but the vocals on this threw me off. It’s a 2.5 star album for me, but I have a feeling I’ll probably round down.

None of the songs really caught my attention.

As someone who was learning to play guitar in the mid-90s, it was a requirement, not an option, to learn "A Design for Life". Even if you weren't a fan of the Manics. Like it was part of a curriculum. And I wasn't a fan of the Manics. Listening back to this album now, nothing has changed. Bradfield's singing voice still really gets on my nerves. The rest of the makeup of their music is the embodiment of a shoulder shrug, or the word "meh". They put themselves forward as edgy and profound, but they're neither. The disappearance of Richey Edwards hangs heavily over this album. They may have gained a lot more success post-Edwards, but their sound had become a lot more watered down and less interesting than in the days he was around. The arpeggios of "A Design for Life" are the most interesting thing about the music on this album, and after learning to play them, they weren't even worth the effort.

Boring

1.5 stars The UK was into some stuff that made no impact on the US whatsoever. This album was rated best album of 1996 by NME. But it’s boring, generic, forgettable pop rock. Here are better albums from 1996: The Score- The Fugees Odelay- Beck Evil Empire- Rage Against the machine Pinkerton- Weezer All Eyez On Me- 2pac Being There- Wilco If You’re Feeling Sinister- Belle and Sebastian To name a few…

I didn't care for this one. I don't know how to articulate it, but it wasn't for me. It's too much style and not enough substance. The backstory about the missing lyricist was interesting though. 2/5

Good variety. Creative

I didn't like the vocals on most tracks. A few good musical arrangements. Overall a poor album.

I feel like I just watched VH-1 for an hour. This is fine, perfectly bland yet catchy music. When try to go hard, they sound like they are trying too hard. They sound like Gin Blossoms or post-Iris Goo Goo Dolls. They play alright music but I'd never go out of my way to listen to them. 2

Really not a lot to say about this

There’s 2 and a half songs I really enjoyed on this (Everything Must Go, No Surface All Feeling, the chorus of A Design For Life). Everything else I found just a bit dull

Pretty generic, probably a 3, but a few songs were mixed in a way that made me feel like my ears needed to pop. Maybe it was the remaster, but the music wasn't memorable enough to listen again and find out.

Utterly forgettable

Way too glam. Maybe it’s just the vocals that I really don’t like. The music isn’t actually that bad. But I will pass thx.

OK, for the most part. But I can think of a handful of bands off the top of my head that sound exactly like this one, and can name at least a dozen albums from others which are better but aren’t on the list at all.

I had to listen to this two times because I was left a bit impressionless the first time I listened... but I have to say I almost cringe at this band... it just oozes of pretentiousness. The band name, the lyrics, the vocal style of the singer, the chord progressions, etc. Everything just feels so... forced? The singer sounds like he's exhausting himself just by vocalizing the lyrics. There's also very little dynamics in his singing. It always sounds like he's screaming his heart out. The chord progressions and melodies of most songs also feels very... awkward and doesn't feel natural to me. Often times a song takes an unepexted turn for the better, but here it's always for the worse somehow. The start of the album was by far the worst, it got much better at the end. 'Australia' is actually not too bad of a song, with a very catchy chorus. 'Interiors (Song For Willem De Kooning)' is also decent with its catchy guitar riff. And the album ends with one of the strongest songs in 'No Surface All Feeling'. The end of the album totally saves this from a 1 for me. Ends up being a 2 instead.

Bland brit pop. Not bad but nothing stuck during my two listens. I think part of the problem is that there are too many albums of this sort on this list. Giving it a strong 2 for now.

This is one of those bands where I know the name but don't know the music. Now I know why.

whatever

Nada de mais. Mediano e dispensável.

Didn’t hate it that’s about all I can say. Fine in the background but nothing particularly distinguishing this from anything else in the genre.

Quite boring. Why is this on here?

Alt rock, so not for me.

Sounds a bit to generic to deserve a higher score.

It was ok, might listen to more

point6.

#730. Mid-tier hipster rock 2/5: meh

Ah, the most ok 90s indie rock.

Not to my taste.

Talented guitarist, competent singer, polished production, but I feel on every track they manage to do very little with these gifts and come up with an overall sound that is to me less Brit-pop and more like Scorpions meets Worship Band.

His voice gets right on my tits

Britpop: The Musical!

2- Stars (4/15)

I tried. I get that this, with the lost lead singer, is like a Joy Division experience for a newer generation. I couldn't understand the lyrics, and this was compounded by my not being engaged by the music they were making, so I was less motivated to dig up the lyrics.

A little cheesy/of it's time I guess.

Thought the first couple songs were cool, but this is just average mid-90s If you were to ask me what rock music sounded like post-Nirvana, this would be the average of everything. Nothing really special about it...I don't hate it, but I'm also not planning on listening to it again. Quite frankly, I'm looking forward to it ending here in a song or two so I can listen to something else. I don't know much about this band but I'm assuming their fans are insufferable. Wild hunch.

90s Britpop Rock Even though it sounds big it feels dated. A piece of 90s nostalgia. Probably won't listen to the album as a whole again. Favorite tracks: A design for life

Not super impressed. Not really an obnoxious album, but it doesn't stand out much to me as significant.

Not that interesting of a listen, quite dated and very not revolutionary. It's not terrible, there are stand outs, but in the larger sense it's not a project I'm glad I gave a chance too. I could have been perfectly fine having never heard of them or any of their songs. Some songs are incredibly mid and could have been by any other band from that time. Nothing on there is offensive or absolutely terrible, but once you hear the first violin progression + synth you do not need to hear any more, the whole thing doesn't go anywhere and sounds too much alike. On the positive, A design for life is a fine song, it's good and I get why it's the most popular, although not that exciting. The only shining moment on the album comes for me right at the end with No Surface All Feeling. That one sounds ahead of its time, very much late 00's rock, and is a beautiful song about friendship and grief. That one I'll keep.

Sounds like what a punk on Dawson’s Creek would listen to. Kind of boring 90s alterna-slop.

String-infested brit-pop. I like their politics but not their sound.

Not so much my kind of tea. Me not liky. Zwei Ave Marias

I’ve heard of Manic Street Preachers. They’re one of those bands whose name always seems to float around, but when it comes to their actual music, it just doesn’t land for me. This album felt ultimately forgettable. It came and went without leaving any impression, and while I know it has a following, it just isn’t something I’d return to. That said, Everything Must Go holds a major place in the band’s history. It was their first album after lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards disappeared in 1995, a moment that shook both the band and their fans. Instead of collapsing, they regrouped and pushed forward, reshaping their sound into something more accessible and anthemic. Critics and audiences embraced it as a triumphant rebirth - but for me personally, even with that weight behind it, the music itself still doesn’t connect.

This is pretty good except for all of the vocals

This is exactly the sort of like 00s pop rock (I know it says 1996) that really grates on me for reasons I can't explain. I think it's like, a mix of kind of yelly vocals and riffs that aren't very cool but there are a lot of them. It all seems to think it's really smart. It all feels like the music for the opening scene of a movie with characters walking around.

I didn’t hate it, but I would not listen again. It’s fine I guess? Idk

Mid 90’s brit pop/rock poorly done.

Enola/Alone is such a good song. It is pure mid-90s alternative rock with a hooky chorus and great breakdown at the end. The Girl Who Wanted to be God is also pretty catchy with a weird subject matter that also fits squarely into the 90s. The verses sound almost like mid-career XTC.

Not a terrible album, but not for me.

I don’t really like the Manics. Never have. A bit pretentious and shouty. There are a few decent songs on this album, but the majority are not good. 2 stars.

placentada

Generic 80s.

it was really interesting reading the wikipedia entry about this band and the disappearance of richey edwards! i’m interested in listening to some of their other stuff to compare it to this, a couple of songs were hitting, but mostly it kinda sucks?

i just dont even know what this was

I can feel the hurting behind a lot of songs here, but unfortunately most tracks fall far behind on either the production side or composition side.

kind of inoffensive, bland 90s music. nothing particularly stood out to me.

It was okay, but not exactly my cup of tea. More so background noise, as nothing really stands out.

The vocals are a more melodic version of Vince Neil circa 2022. WTF is that dude singing about? Overall it wasn’t dreadful but it wasn’t enjoyable either.

How much shitty British crap does this list have????

I remember this being really big in the UK at the time. I'm not sure I get it. I find the orchestrations to be a bit much.

Mid 20s when brit pop was the thing and loved every minute of life back then. So glad I didn't listen to this then as it has some really poor tracks on this album and it's not a pleasurable listen

Meh. Just wish I was listening to Wonderwall instead. Further away bugs the hell out of me.

2.5/5 - I found this to be really boring. There was nothing good or bad about it, it was just really plain. Second half of the album was better than the first half Standout tracks: - Removables 3.5/5 - Australia 3.5/5

The title track was cool, but the rest failed to interest me much. Maybe I just wasn't in the right head space.

I don't know...bands like this just sound like nothing to me.

Another 80s-90s brit indie rock with dudes wanting to be Oasis or Radiohead or the Cure. I didn't really think anything on this album would stand out to me but I did sort of like "Enola/Alone" it's got a good melody.

Run of the mill 90s brit pop. Not bad, just nothing stood out.

This album has become dated. Not for me.

normal

This was fine. Not really hearing anything special to make it a must-listen. Some good parts and nothing that I would point out as particularly bad. That said, it was mostly just fairly uninteresting rock songs. Looked into it a little and there was a lot of interesting drama around the group and missing band member leading up to it, so maybe the context of the album made a difference for initial reception. I still don't see why it would be considered an all-time great album based on the music. You'd think that would've led to more interesting artistry, but I didn't get much out of it. Overall: 2.5/5

Kinda boring

This almost got 3, but I am deducting a point for the crappy 'string arrangements'. Why do rock bands do that? 2/5.

Cruddy Brit pop.

It's okay. I never really got into these guys back in the day. It just doesn't grab me.

I wish i had a bottle... To drown my sorrows in.

Not even good in the 90's

First time listener to this album and band. Decent listen. Nothing really moved me while listening. Not a big fan of the vocals. I am not sure how this is on the 1001 list.

.. it musta went! Nothing left on the shelves...

Not my sound vocally, but I love the soundscapes in these tracks.

Sounds like some pretty standard 90's Brit-pop that never grabbed me or caught my attention. Nothing really stands out, the songs are pleasant enough and there isn't too much to dislike, it's just that I don't feel like this is special enough for be essential for anyone.
