Reviews (page 7 of 8)
First track wasn't for me at all. Second track it starts to lift musically and feels fresh. The rest of the album either does nothing for me or is just the same sounding song. Maybe an album that meant more at the time?
Given the backstory of this album, I wish I was more into this, but it just didn’t grab me at all. Pretty bland alt rock with nothing interesting to set it apart from the rest. Meh.
After the first couple of songs came on, I was like “Oh, ok. I’m not going to love this, but it’s fine. Probably a 3.” Half an hour later, I realized that my earbuds were still in and it was still playing. Not a great sign. I listened to the last few songs more actively, despite the album apparently not deserving my attention. Are they just watered down Green Day? Anyway, it was a pretty nothing of an album, and I can’t justify putting it in the same tier as other albums I’ve given threes to, even CrazySexyCool.
A Design for Life // Enola / Alone //
Too much pop for my taste
Forgettable
2.4 1x catchup 2/24
I am starting to see why the reviews complain about how much Britpop is on this list. This is yet another Britpop album but honestly it falls into the same category as every other one so far; Meh. Enola/alone was pretty good, but everything else was just average, nothing really stood out.
Very bland but like somehow sounds like it’s trying to sound like more? Does that make sense? Every song sounds like the singer is trying to make it sound like emotion is there but there somehow isn’t. Like when you see someone smile but it doesn’t reach their eyes.
I value my time too much to listen to every song on this album. Design for Life is a fantastic song, otherwise it was largely dull and irritating 2/5
not very appealling to me
As a fan of most things Brit Rock I felt absolutely nothing listening to this. Maybe it was having the most generic singer in the world.
New to me. Solid. Sounded like early Train. Was unremarkable and fine.
I'm not sure I like 90's brit-rock. Oh well. (12 known/20 new)
Seems like an unpolished recording at a club. The Brits must’ve been hurting for good music that year.
Another head scratcher... I remember them being pushed on me at the record stores and on compilation discs of up and commer's at the time. They never struck a chord with me, generic 90's pop rock. I am not familiar with this album at all, but 47M people have listened to "A Design For Life" so I thought I must know it from the radio or a party, nope. If that's the best song on the disc... Vocals are weak and strained. Music is average and overly busy. No hooks. No hits. The strings they added didn't enhance the music, only muddied it further. No influence, zero radio play. I didn't make it fully through any of the songs, no compelling reason to waste a full 45 minutes. Two stars, it was just so average from top to bottom. I can think of 20 other albums from 1996 with more to offer.
This album proves the marketing principle that if you want to make something popular, make it bland. I've always found the Preachers very boring but (as a result) never listened to an entire album. I did now and won't do it again. This sounds like a local teenage band - alright with a pint of Guinness in the Rose and Crown on Friday evenings. I find is musically very weak, it's just a bunch of 1990's clichés (OK then, dated now) with samey (and unpleasantly shouty) vocals. But hey, they call themselves preachers after all. Bumped a point because some songs are catchy (A Design for Life, Kevin Carter).
I even went to the 2016 remastered version hoping that would help. Apparently I'm averse to britpop along with most all **** Pop.
Holy shit, how many more milk toast Britpop albums do we need to listen to before we die? Is the goal here to prove to us how awful life can be? Is THAT why we listen to these albums? I'd rather listen to a real manic street preacher going on about the end of the world.
Nearly every one of these dozen tracks sounds like rip offs of nearly as many bands that are far better and far more successful.
Musically this is ok. It is mundane 90’s alt-rock but does have some nice orchestral touches here and there. His voice is awful. It sounds so overly earnest and lives in that space between nails and chalkboard.
A bit dated.
nem volt rossz de annyira jo se, kicsit erdektelen lettem ezzel az albummal kapcsolatban es kinda hosszu is volt xdd
Woof, not good. Self righteous, no risks - might as well be AI
Didn’t care much for this, nothing special, could have gone my life without hearing it for sure
voice is a bit jarring ...like instrumentals bit struggle with voice
To me, this is the kind of music you might hear from the speakers in a parking garage or at a small town mall. Completely unremarkable.
[pulling out a dusty file that says “Bands I Never Thought About Before But Now I Think They Are At Least Kind Of Ok” and adding a new page to it, never to be revisited again]
I really enjoyed Generation Terrorists when it came out and was a big Manic's fan even though they were bellends in their early years. As they matured I liked them less and less - a bit too portentous and lacking fun. Quite enjoyed "Everything must go" - but found it a bit flat and washed over me without sparking much joy. Singles are okay - but thats probably as have heard them so much. Was hoping to like the album more and that my younger self would be proved wrong for dismissing them but still found it all a bit meh.. 2/5 is probably harsh - its more a 2.5.
Great horns on Kevin Carter! But the vocals are hard to hear. Something about the quality of the voice doesn't work. Blind Melon pulls it off, but MSP don't on this album even though the quality is somewhat comparable. Generally dislike the album-- and the band finding it lacks interest and appeal.
I liked discovering The Holy Bible, the last album before Richey Edward’s disappearance. In contrast, Everything Must Go feels uninspired. Edward’s absence must have affected these guys. How could it not. Richey was a major contributor to The Holy Bible lyrics. Strangely, the aspects of Everything Must Go that feel lacking are the music and the vocals, both of which were written and performed by the same members for both albums.
The Good: who doesn’t like an “everything must go” event? The Bad: the fact that even the band knows things must go… The Ugly: me getting snubbed while I was offering to help make things go a little faster… Can somebody explain to me why a band would call themselves “Manic Street Preachers”? Isn’t that just an open invitation for people to run away and not listen? Also, though I can understand that there is a segment of society who appreciates this kind of music, I do fear they should all be kept far away from sharp objects… The songs all sound the same to me, the singer’s voice is annoying as fuck, and overall I felt vindicated in my disdain for the band… but at least it’s not crappy rap. 2* just barily
Personally found this much less enjoyable than Holy Bible. Just kinda boring.
More shitty britpop
Pretty mundane Rock
New album to me and truly nothing grabbed me. Meh version of standard 90s pop rock IMO 2.5⭐️
More mediocre Brit pop-rock very few people outside of the UK have ever heard of. So very tired of this trend on this list.
Nothing worth a relisten
I'm getting tired of britpop boss
Nah. Ok. But nothing grabs me.
This is in fact, music. Maybe 2.5 There are some parts that pop off, mainly in the choruses when the vocals and instruments actually harmonize, although the rest of it sounds very cacophonous. It's like The Stone Roses, except the vocals get drowned out and aren't clear. It's also like Cocteau Twins, except it's like chunky peanut butter instead of smooth. (although chunky peanut butter is better so this analogy doesn't work)
This is, in fact, music. Maybe 1.5
Not my favourite manics album. The singles are all good.
That voice gets grating pretty fast.
Närmre 2.5
Like many other similar albums on this list it is fine but doesn't feel special, groundbreaking, unique, superlative, or otherwise deserving to be on this list. The most I can say is I wouldn't be desperate to change it if someone else was playing it in their car or at a party. I feel that's the right level of faint praise to offer.
Very basic britpop, easily forgettable
Vocals are not great. A couple of the songs are decent but overall, not something I'd want to listen to.
2/5. It feels like a directionless album. Like the songs are good but I don't really feel connected to them. It kind of feels like that similar brit pop feel but just not as engaging as the many other albums that fall in the same genre. I enjoy the general vibe but it is also produced terribly. I really wanted to like this one, and it's not terrible, but it just didn't catch me despite it's popularity with critics and critical success. Like they were learning how to write songs for the first time but were still musically inclined. Best Song: A Design For Life, The Girl Who Wanted To Be God, No Surface All Feeling
the cheese is big in this one
Sounds like generic 90’s alternative. Given this was released in 96, it’s hardly ground breaking. I suppose it’s someone’s favorite but a big “meh” here
noniin ja unohdin että edes kuuntelin tämän... ollaan oltu hiljaisuudessa kymmenen minuuttia... aha se loppui jo... britpop.... en aktiivisesti vihannut vaan passiivisesti .. mitä olin sanomassa? en tiedä,... albumi on kuin monet muutkin albumit: albumimainen... albumissa on erilaisia biisejä.... tai samanlaisia biisejä... niitä on kuitenkin muutama... jotka luovat kokonaisuuden... noin 45 minuutin pitkän kuuntelukokemuksen... sanotaan nyt sen verran... jooh... voisi olla vähän maanisempaa vähän klickbäittiä tuo bändin nimi vois olla vähän street preaching is soull.... soulful act... this is not.... ööh... kevin carter? idk
Did not do it for me. I suspect you had to be there...
Meh. Nothing special here. Made it through without skipping or turning it off, but not a single track was impressive either.
Manic Street Preachers are very recognizable as a 90s staple, but for the most part this is not the rock music for me.
Middling rock, even for the 90s, that was only made notable by a member of the band seeing the film Eddie and the Cruisers one too many times.
eh
I don't know, this didn't do a whole lot for me. Aside from a few of the more bombastic tracks, this album felt like some kind of guitarish sludge. I did enjoy a few of the songs, though, such as "Australia."
Just fine, kinda done with britpop. Will I listen to again: 1%
Do I listen to this again? Meh probably not. Didn't do anything for me, so much mid-90s Brit Pop. Makes sense as Oasis just announced a big reunion tour next year (2025) in the UK
2 stars for me. not my speed really, kind of catchy 90's brit-pop but nothing I'm coming back to really.
Pretty blah album to me. Boring listen. Dude looks like a combo of Bono and Brad Cooper combined. 2 stars
I never understood what all the fuss was about this band back in the day, and I still don't. Mediocre at best.
One of those bands where I like about three songs and appear to dislike the rest. Design for Life was the only enjoyable one on here and the rest did nothing for me. Simpsons: No
This album bored me.
I can see why people would like this but it did very little for me. Just a bit middle of the road although it's well produced.
Gear: Fostex TH610 Artwork: 🟦🧑🏻🧑🏻🧑🏻 Mix: 🔪👂🩸 Musik: 🇬🇧🎸🎺🤷♂️ Wertung: 🟦(🟦)/5
Maybe I’m not in the right mood, but I don’t really like it.
Bog standard really 2.5 out of 5
Some good songs
This album didn't capture the feeling of the previous album I listened to on this list. I respect the band for trying to keep going after missing their lead singer, but, without him it's just standard brit pop.
The instrumental aspects are pretty decent. They’re dated for sure, but I mostly liked the sound fine. I didn’t like the vocals and lyrics though. I couldn’t understand a lot of what he was saying - his pronunciation was so odd, which could be contributed to the Welshness. But mainly, the way the lyrics fit with the melody often felt clumsy. The melody seemed like an afterthought. 2.6
Can't stand them for a full album length
Forgettable
Nothing stood out for me as being particularly great. 2.5
Pop melodrama Reeks of nineties rom com vibes Sad world blah blah blah
Sounds so 90s. Can't really put my finger on the specifics but maybe the guitars and production. I was into the first track and third track but kind of lost my attention after that.
Ho hum. Not offensive, but not impressive or memorable in any way.
Basically the same song 12 times in a row.
unremarkable
As someone who is normally a fan of britpop/alternative rock, this one was rather disappointing. There wasn’t a single song that really stood out to me, and the album’s mediocrity makes me feel like it is undeserving of being an essential album to hear before you die. For that reason, I can’t give it more than 2 stars. Maybe I should give it another chance at a later date.
I see why this is on the list, but it doesn't really do much for me. I've never really gotten the hype for these guys, and listening to a full album hasn't changed my mind. There's 2 or 3 songs that stand out, but the rest are very MOR, with exactly the same shouts vocal delivery in each one. Not much unique about this to my ears, probably another one where you had to be there at the time.
It's not that Manic Street Preachers' songs are bad; they are just ordinary. I couldn't find a hook that I liked on this album ... the songs seemed like less interesting versions of the Brit pop that dominated the airwaves in the mid 90s.
Not good
Not too much into this
NO MORE BRITPOP! completely unessential!
Not bad! Clean, enjoyable enough, but nothing crazy. There were smalls bits of creativity that I enjoyed.
..
Favorite song: Elvis Impersonator
Not into this at all. This guys voice sucks, the songs are weak. Nope.
I should listen to this again. But I don't think I will. Brit pop rarely works for me as it is. And this album doesn't add much to the conversation on first glance. If I was really into Brit Pop, this would be a cool deep cut and may be underrated. But, no, this is just another brick in the wall of brit pop. And that's not a very pretty wall to begin with.
Average 90's alt BS. Of its time, nothing stands out and forgettable.
This felt like such background music I don't know if I can really feel like I heard any of it. May have missed something but not sure why this is on the list.
Pretty average album. Nothing really interesting on here. 2/5 Won’t listen again
I just had an MSP album not too long ago, which I gave 1 star. I was not looking forward to this. It didn’t grate the way other album did, but I really didn’t enjoy it. Blegh.
Honestly sounded like background music. If i was in a boutique clothing store in london or in a pub in london and it was on i would be like awh! cool! but i didnt save any of the songs and they sounded pretty old corny and dated
The most average garage band I’ve never heard. Is this band a friend of the curators of this 1001 list?
Offensively uninspired and boring. The musical equivalent of iceberg lettuce, no dressing.
I've never been able to get into the Manic Street Preachers, and I was hoping sitting down and listening to this record would finally be the moment they click, but it just didn't happen. I can't help but find them a bit dull and bland. Nothing on thie record really jumped out to me. It's enjoyable, but not something I feel like coming back to.
Save me from mediocre britpop hell
I'll stick with Radiohead, thanks.
All the songs sounded the same to me!!
Seemed pretty bland to me. Not sure what promotes it to level of being on the list
sold out
Honestly, really quite boring. Nothing wrong with it as such, and I should like this sort of thing. But it's bland as fuck.
Good God. I know that in the U.K. they eat mushy green peas and beans on toast for every meal and watch "comedians" being droll and witty while pretending to play a game show for entertainment, but do they really not have any concept of "bland"? This music is bland. It is as bland as the album cover and the pictures of the people who made this shitty album. This is the aural equivalent of mushy green peas.
Ok, but not for me. 2 stars
This was not a great album, no lie.
na
Our second from this group, and it's exactly as non-descript as the first. A couple decent songs, the music isn't even bad, it's just so bland and, at album's length, boring. Are these really albums we must hear before we die, or are they albums we might not want to sit through lest we die? Favorite tracks: No Surface All Feeling, Small Black Flowers. Album art: Not a bad way to include photos of the bandmates, and actually it's a similar triptych style to the other album we got, though that featured three large, foreboding bodies. I like that these pics are on a little shelf, that's cool. Color is nice, text box isn't bad either. 2.5/5
kutalbum
Nothing special
Unbelievably boring. Why do I know this bands name?
This felt very caught up in the 90's and I didn't hate it but I also didn't like it. Some good horns and melodicals in the backgrounds but not really vibing with the singer's voice. I don't need it, farewell.
Pretty standard 90s alternative with some nice orchestral additions. I liked it but it doesn't standout for me in this genre like GooGoo Dolls or Better Than Ezra does. No real impact and doesn't make me want to explore more of their albums.
Couple of decent songs in the middle but nothing special. OK background music but nothing memorable by the end of it. Never heard of Manic Street Preachers but I'm typically a fan of 90's britpop stuff. 2.5 stars
Middling alt rock
2.5
I feel like I should have liked this one, but didn’t.
Pretty bland 90s indie rock
Not my thing!
This was rather unpleasant
ok and?
Typical of its ilk. Pleasant enough, just nothing special. Not my thing. 2
Some different rock genres going on in this album. I preferred the more alternative tracks, but overall the album never really grabbed my attention. Sounds like a standard mid-90's rock/alternative album.
I have mixed feelings towards Manic Street Preachers. I find some of their songs utterly brilliant, yet most of their albums are an effort at grinding water. This album is no exception.
Ei aivan lähtenyt. Jotain koukkuja olisin kaivannut lisää. 2,5 olis hyvä, mutta kolmoseen ei taivu. 2/5
Eipä ole tää bändi auennut koskaan. On tässä pari ihan kivaa biisiä, mutta levyllistä ei oikein kanna. Aika bulkkia verrattuna Oasis/Pulp/Suede -gangiin.
Joo eipä tämäkään ilmeinen britti-indien helmi sen isommin osunut, ei vaan mitenkään järin kiinnostavaa tätä nykyä. 2/5
Quite nice but nothing special
Fairly bland music. Almost sounds like someone took the Foo Fighters and made them sound a lot less interesting. I can hear some early hints of the golden 2000’s pop-punk of my teenage years. Two stars.
Rather bland.
This album has some great tracks - Design for Life being a 90's classic. However, the backend of it is so tedious and uninspired. I find the strong tracks are really strong, but the weak tracks feel like poor Hole, Nirvana, Grunge inspired tracks that don't pass as sincere, or conflict with the actual nature of the band - a relatively middle of the road pop act. I thought I might like this album more these days, having bought - and been dissappointed by it - back in the day. I guess it is still not form me.
Favorite tracks: Kevin Carter, Removables, Further Away Ultimately, maybe not my thing
An well made album for sure, but not really extraordinary in my opinion. I struggle to see why it is on this list as it doesn't feel like it provides anything outside of generic sounding pop noise. It doesn't really do much for me and feels like the music you'd hear in the background of an episode of One Tree Hill or Dawson's Creek. It sounds quite utterly replaceable with the other 200 pop artists that were prevalent during this period. With this being said, it fits this 90's pop rock vibe. But I do not feel like it does anything special. I also don't like this genre, almost at all... so there's that. Fave Songs: A Design For Life Enola/Alone Australia
Not for me.
Dripping with unwanted 90s alternative nostalgia.
forgettable but ok
I don't know what I'm missing lately. Not a big fan of this. Sounds like relatively basic pop/rock 2.2
I'm not keen - too manic, too preachy.
Straight forward rock and roll. Pretty boring.
Very boring inoffensive rock. How'd these guys get a record deal? Guitarist apparently disappeared. Probably for the better.
I don't remember anything from this album
Waaaay Overproduced relative to Holy Bible
This list has wayyy too much 90s britpop. Once you listen to about 10 britpop records, they all begin to mesh together in terms of sound. One thing I did like about this record was the vocals.
This has all the makings for something I’d like but it did not blend.
One of the more boring albums we’ve had so far. Again, it’s records like that this start to give me a better image of the person who wrote this list, and how plain their taste in music is. In what world do I have to listen to this before I die? Fine vocals, bland mixing, underwritten lyrics. Not one that landed for me. One and a half. Fave track: Further Away
This was ok, pretty forgettable though. Nothing really stood out to me. 2/5
The offspring, Oasis, Nirvana, Stone temple pilots, Pearl jam, Radiohead, Foo fighters. Es un resumen de la época jaja
This sounded like like Oasis and Garbage had a baby. Very 90s indie rock feel to it. Kind of dragged on after a bit.
I've never heard any of these songs or of this band, and this album came out right in the middle of my prime popular music listening (high school). I'm sure it was influential or ground breaking in some way, but it just seemed like mediocre music from the 90s
Totally boring and forgettable. What on earth could make this worthy of the 1001??
I don't know what things to say about the album. My Spotify kept stopping the album so even Spotify didn't want to finish the album.
I like the vocals and the lyrics are interesting, but most of the songs are generic and boring. I felt like I was waiting for the album to be over. I liked Elvis and Flowers. 2.5/5
Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for this, but it was not vibing with me.
I've never heard of this band before this listen. Now I know why.
Noisy and boring, he just sings the melodies.
I had already listened to The Holy Bible and didn’t care for it but I came into this one with an open mind. First track had me optimistic, something different with good energy, great. Then they fell back into their formula of mediocre alt-rock. This sucks, it’s boring and uninspired. Hope this is the last Manic Street Preacher album on this project. 2 stars
Of all the Brit pop bands so far, this one’s the least favorite
Dead-ass dad rock. Meh.
Couldn’t connect with it.
So I found his album to be pretty basic and generic. I can't say I hated it, but nothing really stood out that made me want to take a deeper look into their music. But, the song Kevin Carter kinda stuck in my head, so I had to find out if this is a real person. And sonofagun, this guy was real, he is famous and his story is sad and tragic for all the things he witnessed and photographed through the years. I spent a bit reading his story this morning. Very interesting. This is his suicide note: I'm really, really sorry. The pain of life overrides the joy to the point that joy does not exist. …depressed … without phone … money for rent … money for child support … money for debts … money!!! … I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain … of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners … I have gone to join Ken if I am that lucky. — Kevin Carter, [Suicide letter] Damn............ Album still gets a 2 for me. maybe 2.5. But I did learn something new, so I'll give the 2.5
2.5 I’m not going to lie, I thought these were the guys that wrote that Broken Phone Booth song, so I was disappointed to not see it on this album. Manic Street Preachers, Primitive Radio Gods, it’s not just me, right? Anyway, all that to say I apparently didn’t know anything by these guys. After listening, I learned it’s basically pure 90s Britpop, and I gotta say, the more of the genre I listen to, the more I’m starting to think Oasis is the only band that really pulled it off. Like, it doesn’t sound bad, but after my first listen, I retained nothing. So, I gave it a second listen, and this time really tried to focus in on the individual songs, but I swear every track on this album sounds exactly the same. I thought it was kind of funny that the Wikipedia article mentioned they put a heavy emphasis on the drum production here, because even after knowing that fact, I still couldn’t detect any kind of distinct emphasis or flair on the drum track. In fact, thanks to Wikipedia, the most interesting part of this whole experience for me was when I learned that this is the band’s first album without former lyricist/guitarist Richey Edwards, who straight up disappeared a year prior and still hasn’t been found to date. He was presumed dead in 2008, but apparently there have been sightings of him in India? I digress, the pacing of this album was pretty good and never dragged, but really it’s just mediocre Britpop at best. Would rather listen to Oasis (or maybe some early Supergrass as my Spotify shuffle has been getting me into lately!)
Everything must go yes, like this album. Please stay away from me with all your hundreds of guitars.
This album put me off of using the site for a long time
At first, I was reminded of being in my early 20s and the carefree existence I enjoyed back then. Then I started to remember how pretentious this band were.
Bland and repetitive for most of the album. Some songs were decent though.
2.75
Typisk tre stjerner
It was OK. Nothing really grabbed me.
This is an unmemorable album
I know these guys are highly regarded and all, but to my ears it just sounded like polished britpop with hooks that are entertaining but that I ultimately didn't care for.
Generic alternative rock at its best. I don't remember anything from this record.
What a great name for a group. Too bad about the music.
A little drab
Man, I’m feeling like a Negative Nancy, but I did not care for this.
Meh
Brittpop niks voor mij
Can definitely tell this isn't as gripping as it would be to those with nostalgia for this album. Also, the ending track has this annoying pitch that drives me up the wall! (I was listening to the 2016 remastered version, for those wondering) with all that said, "Australia" was my favorite track - I think it has a melodic, hard rock sound to it that I like.
Trååååkigt
2.5/5
Just couldn’t get into this one.
an ok album. reminds me of Cold War Kids
I’ve only ever listened to the hits never a full studio album from the Manics. So after popping that cherry with this I can safely say: you’re not missing out on any deep cut gems by only listening to Spotify’s ‘This Is Manic Street Prechers’ playlis . ‘A Design For Life’, ‘Kevin Carter’ & ‘Australia’ are brilliant indie bangers with depth and soul. But the rest just feels like decent b-sides lacking the killer punch of those prior tracks. It’s not bad, but it’s not great: They’re a ‘Best of’ Band
Music sounded good. Could not hear vocals. Worth the listen.
Man, I really don't care about this at all.
The last song was good enough to almost change my mind, but I don’t see why this album is on the list. The set of songs are decent enough, but it didn’t strike me as particularly special.
Hm... not terribly impressed. It got much better later, but I won't have any cause to return to it. I read a wild story about their disappearing bandmate tho.
Really just don’t like these guys that much
It feels like a shame to rate this a 2, but I don't remember much about the record. I'll have to revisit it.
Meh
Sounds like a poor man’s Oasis combined with Travis.
Never heard of them - kinda good, pretty standard. Some stinkers in the second half. Probably won't intentionally listen again. I think you had to be alive in '96 to enjoy this one. 2 stars, just not my thing
Meh
very ok
I just really didn't think this was good.
It's as if an AI was tasked to listen to some 90's alternative/brit-pop radio, and then make an album based on what it heard.
I did not enjoy this album at all. It was very bland and boring.
Mostly just formulaic Brit pop. Feels contained to a box of how it should sound which makes it quite mundane. 4/10
This gets two stars because it wasn't bad. Not great or good but definitely not bad.
Manic Street Preachers just sounds like whiny preaching to me.
A real mash-mash of styles. The Chic one. The Nirvana one. None of it really grabbed me. They always came across as playing at being a punk band, and this album did nothing to disabuse me of that notion. Stodgy riffs with pseudo-meaningful lyrics and whiny vocals. The musical equivalent of Banksy - one dimensional and dogmatic.
I really didn’t like everything except the last three songs, those were pretty good, but I just couldn’t get into the rest of it
Generic Brit pop/ alt rock.
Listened Before? N This one was better than the other one I've listened to by this band (The Holy Bible). It's kinda like Smashing Pumpkins and Oasis had a baby. I reckon it's okay. Not my favorite but listenable. Added to Library? N Songs added to Library: A Design for Life
Not really my thing.
Mais um britpop que não empolga.
'90s British alternative. Guitars with distortion.
Voice sounded like Nate Ruess at first glance.
This list is just endless random British bands. I liked a couple of songs, I already forget who they reminded me of (some 90s band) but this was not a "must hear" by any stretch.
TRIGGER WARNING: britpop 🤮
Not a fan.
Eh.

Really not my kind of music. Didn't listen to the full album as I got a headache by song 4. But I did the appreciate alternative lyrics and can see why this would be on the list. Interesting to read about the band leader's story.
I feel very indifferent about this album. Mostly sounds like filler songs on an Oasis album but never climbs to the heights that Oasis could. The musicians are good but this didn't grab me.
didn't like it at first but it grew on me. Reminded me of 90's rock lacking ingenuity but there's definitely something there. It would take some re-listens but I won't lol.
I couldn't get into it it's a generic 90's rock album
Irish soft punk rock 2.5
Some of this was a little over-the-top symphonic swirling. This round of britpop wasn't as good as as others.
Eh.
All the songs sound the same, I liked A Design For Life and mildly liked Everything Must Go and Small Black Flowers That Grow in the Sky. Bit bland and low res sound.
Ok album. Less of an edge than the other MSP album since they lost the main singer and songwriter. Don’t think I’d revisit this one much. 5.4/10
boooring
mehhhh, was okay
Liked Removables and Australia. Interesting and different cadence with lyrics in many songs. Needs stronger bass in some songs to balance high notes.
Indie pop sin meis
Los van een paar nummers nooit echt een fervent aanhanger van de manische straat predikanten geworden.
Ok. It felt like a weirdly generic pop punk album? Wasn’t really interested.
It felt a bit unpolished. Maybe that was the intention but it just felt amateurish.
I really did not like this
Not sure about this. It feels a little like a high school band. The components are there. It just doesn’t feel like a top 1001 album to me.
Not for me
Enkel, 90-tals lame punkrock. Äej, det här va nog inget för mig. Inte dåligt, bara lite basic, tråkigt
false
I just couldn't enjoy it. I don't know. Not sure why it was on this list. Maybe it was a big deal in the UK.
I feel like the songs have good sounds but it was oddly generic and had nothing that made them sound unique. I have to wonder if maybe they were originators of some sounds that later influenced artists I do know. I feel the need to research the history of this band more
Okay, british punk/pop-ish. I liked the first song that was meant to be a criticism of how british ppl copy american culture. I also liked further away, supposed to be a love song.
Not feelin it
Nothing special
I know they’re local, but... meh
Not my favourite album.
Monstrously monotonic monotony. Look, being boring is one thing, but this felt like it was actually trying to be aggressively insipid. After reading a number of positive reviews, I even relistened to it thinking I may have missed something. Nope. Not a single track stuck with me. I'm having flashbacks to "Definitely Maybe" - where everyone else seems to think it's the greatest thing ever, and I can't recall a single track despite having just listened to it - multiple times. I guess this type of music and I are simply not compatible.
Yeah man, even this album has gotta go. Learn how to end a song, or have someone else write your lyrics. Fuck outta here.
Annoyed
Yep. Still don't like Brit-Pop. Not a single enjoyable song on the album
I wish there was an option to give half a star
Crappy Brit-pop. I was aware of this band but I assumed there would be at least one recognizable hit on the album, but I hadn’t heard any of them before and it’s quite possible I had never heard any MSP song before. I’m not sure how a pop band became popular without any catchy songs. The album also sounds like it’s being played through an iPhone speaker. 1.7
Boring and common.
Shite
Goddamn there was some bullshit rock after the grunge scene died out. MTV took over and homogenized everything. It was around then that all the radio stations started to get bought out. Anyway, this record has no redeeming qualities, and no one should ever listen to it.
I never heard any of this Britpop back in the 90s because I was listening to good stuff from right here in the US. Listening to it now it seems overrepresented in these 1001 albums, to say the least.
blustering, hectoring, mock-rock
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
pass. too english?
A lot of people I respect love this band but I just don't get it. Plodding, turgid, self important shite with the most irritating vocalist I've ever heard. Shut the fuck up guys.
Strange music.
The Holy Bible is good and I see why it has a committed following. So good in fact that it destroyed everyone's judgment for this one. I'm sorry for the band's loss so I'll leave it there.
IT MUST GO! -1
Dit is ook niets voor mij, ik heb het album niet volledig kunnen luisteren.
no thanks
Whats up with this list... more fucking shit
This album was full of songs that sounded like they could have been the themes songs to cancelled 90’s TV shows.
Not a fan
Disturbingly ordinary, in an era of some exciting stuff. What I want to know is what was the buzz around this at the time, as it is bog ordinary. These guys are the Salieris of the 1990's, destined to be be forgotten fairly quickly.
This was not for me. Not pleasing to my ears.
Very forgettable, like that one girl we all know, Generica. You know the one, a pick me who says mundane and useless things about Taylor Swifts hair.
Tf was that
baka hindi ko lang talaga trip yung gan'tong genre / type of music
Same as when it launched: wasn’t impressed then, still not impressed now.
I made it through the whole thing, only because I had it playing while I worked. This is absolutely the music type I don’t like. The whiny, sort of nerdy vibe. Not a fan. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection:no Favourite Song: none
Not for me 1/5 didn’t finish the album 2/5 didn’t keep the album 3/5 kept it and will listen when songs randomly show up on shuffle 4/5 kept it and will listen to it again on my phone 5/5 buying the vinyl
I vaguely recall enjoying one of their other 1990s albums many years back, so I was ready to give this one a shot. But damn, I really don't find much to like or admire here. It has a very maximalist style of alt-rock, with added instrumentation, atmosphere, and background vocals that should make it rich and joyous - but instead it's like window dressing for dreary nothingness of unexciting songs. The vocals are frequently bellowed and the songwriting is giving me nothing. This album has the self-aggrandisement of baroque pop, with none of the splendour; and the whiny indulgence of indie rock with none of the wry, raw or jangly charm. This gives me visceral flashbacks to how tasteless British popular culture of the late 90s and early 00s was. I was planning to give this two stars but by writing this I seem to have talked myself into: 1*
You know what needs to go? This band!! Awful!!! 🤮🤮
This sounds like an album of the 90’s but not the good parts of the 90’s. It wasn’t good and I truly didn’t like a single song
Bad 90s alt shit
Not impressed - every song sounds the same, and I don’t care for their style.
Is there no shame in Wales?
When I saw the name Manic Street Preachers, I thought they were a band of hate clerics. I was sorely disappointed that it wasn’t, and was actually just shit
One song
Oubliable
хуже хуйни в жизни не слышал.
Pretentiöst skit.
ugh that voice man. It's ok music , but c'mon my guy! Change the tone or the key ....something. This is rough
Hated it
What is it with all these mediocre 90s Brit pop bands? Not all these need to be on the list. I just looked it up and the book this list was based on was edited by an English writer so there you go. This album is mid at best. Sounds like something on Christian rock radio.
Surprised this group is on the list and that they are putting out an album this year. Sounds like just another rock band.
No thank you. Boring and uninspired.
typ rätt mid, borde inte va på denna lista
This singer has one way of singing and does it on everysong. It gets old really fast and I got bored after the second song. Generic, noisy, waste of time. 2/10
As mentioned elsewhere, I wrongly assumed anything deemed britpop or from the UK in the 1990s would have a certain quality to it. Not entirely anti-mainstream or against convention, but unique in a way that separated itself from the grunge hangover and slew of Next Seattle and one hit wonders of the mid-late 90s. The more the second wave continued on, the more lifers from other fine, but not really britpop bands got sorted into the genre by the NME editors always looking to keep the show going. The Manics - more punk, political in their concerns and lyrics, less overtly anti-American rock or provincial - a UK rock band during britpop should’ve been a knockout for me. And everything I’ve ever heard, including this album, is just incredibly dull. Their backstory is incredible and incredibly sad around this time - lyricist and guitarist up and disappears! Forever!
N0pE
Zeikerige rock
Manic’s are my least favourite of the 90’s bands. Wondered if this might change my mind. Nope, I can’t stand his whiny voice. The first song was awful and then it went into the dirge that is Design For Life. I don’t even think the single will be a redeeming feature for me. Australia was ok.
Day 99 - No idea when this got generated I fucking hate britpop. 1/5
