Reviews (page 13 of 13)

This is mostly just someone (barely) singing a bunch of weird stories over basic guitar rhythms. One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong wins worst song by far.

not for me which has sorely disappointed my husband ha.

Scene: Animal House frat party. Bluto finds a guitar player serenading female students on the stairs to the basement. He grabs the guitar and smashes it against the wall. “Sorry.” I’m not sorry. I’ve known this album since the seventies when my family played it a lot. My opinion hasn’t changed; it’s self-indulgent twaddle designed to get girls into bed. Apparently it worked.

Sleep-inducing. Very tough to get through, even whilst cutting songs short.

I can’t explain but it gives me the heebie jeebies. Not bad but not good.

Boring and whiny

I tried to give it chance but I wasn't able to find a way to enjoy it. The lyrics and songwriting are fine. But the performance was just boring throughout.

Whingy and dull

do not like leonard cohen. I am not a sabrina carpenter song

Not for me

I was in a good mood this morning, but old Leonard couldn't have that could he?! Songs of Leonard Cohen? More like Wrongs of Feeling Broken

Jedinica iz principa. // Bila bi jedinica jer sam htjela da počinim samoubistvo.

I couldn’t listen this through. Yhteen songs and I was borderline bored to death

I've never liked Cohen's music, but his voice is amazing. I'm pre-emptively giving this album a 2/5 and will verify it by a quick listen. His voice isn't even dark and musky on this one, as he is but a young man. I _really_ dislike folk music.

Fuck Leonard Cohen

No variety in the tracks. The dreary vibe means I'm not a fan.

Sleepy, slow, monotone, rambling are all words I would use to describe this album. The lyrics may be deep and meaningful to a lot of people, but it feels like listening to someone talking just for the sake of talking. A lot of the tracks are very sparse with just acoustic guitar and Leonard’s singing which only adds to the sleepy feeling of the album. Even the tracks that do feature more instruments still feel just as sparse.

Not my speed. Dont love that it’s all spoken word. Tracks are pretty homogenous.

This is basically spoken-work poetry set to Cohen strumming his guitar, so musically it is not very interesting at all. So how are the words? I have always found Cohen's lyrics to be so stacked with obscure references and metaphors to the point of incomprehensibility. I was looking up the lyrics of The Stranger Song as a good example of this, but I stumbled across a website which presented the lyrics as paragraphs, and it really reinforced that they are basically fables and parables covered by layers and layers imagery presented as songs. Some people might like that, but I don't, I am left with having to analyse the words against my own will. I think there is a strong element of the emperor having no clothes here, or maybe these lyrics are so hard to understand they are acting as a kind of Rorschach test and people are projecting their own meanings and feelings onto them. One star feels a bit mean for this but honestly I didn't like the lyrics at all and the music is such a nothing that there's nothing else left to like. And this album's goodbye was the deliberately bad "arrghh-lah-larrhh" singing (?) - what a strange and unfortunate choice to leave me with a bad taste in my ears.

His voice is boring and the songs just feel like he's droning on. Winter Lady was ok, So Long Marianne was nice. Everything else was just dull and sleep inducing. Best song: So Long Marianne

I don't like this kind of music

Shit. Yesterday I got Bob Dylan and now this. I really don't give af about nice poetry if the music is not interesting enough. This could have been a poetry book instead of the torture that was listening to this whole album.

Just not for me. Very slow. Similar to Bob Dylan. I can see why people like it but just not for me. Had to turn it off at dinner time

I don’t think Leonard Cohen’s stream of consciousness is all that intelligent. I’ll keep an open mind when the others come up, but this was not for me. So Long, Marianne almost upgraded the album to two stars, but it didn’t make it. The background singer Nancy Priddy is the best part of the album. 2.5/10

No thanks. Every song sounded the same.

Not again! Pain.

There is no range in his songs or music. If you listen to one song, you’ve heard the whole album. Boring, uninspired, and bland. It’s the musical equivalent of eating an unsalted saltine cracker.

Today I learned that I never need to listen to Leonard Cohen again.

I bailed after 5 songs. I have always DESPISED that damn Hallelujah song, and now I can fucking hate Leonard Cohen too. This album is a slow moving, monotonous, bummer. I can’t believe this sleepy time cunt is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but Iron Maiden isn’t 🙄

Ooh boy. Boring music and introspective, esoteric lyrics. I felt like I was stuck in a tavern of olde, trapped listening to a travelling minstrel play, and the tavern was out of ale.

I hate the way this guy says perfect body, and I do not have to explain myself.

Leonard Cohen's debut album is as boring as its cover and its voice. Vocally speaking, Cohen seems so stoned that instead of singing, he just reads the lyrics, as if he doesn't feel what he's singing. Honestly, besides seeming to have been recorded with bad intentions, it's quite dull. A real waste of time.

- It took me awhile to come around to Dylan. This is a bridge too far. - A lot here is not working for me: Cohen's monotonous delivery. Boring, often simplistic arrangements. Dated accompaniment. I felt my hand hovering over the "skip" button on almost every track. - The only plus side I see is the lyrics. But A) that is typically the last thing I focus on with music and B) if the only thing to pull from this are the words, make a book of poetry rather than an album.

Could only make it through 2 songs. Not for me

Really struggled to get through this one. It wasn’t bad per se, I just found it boring.

Too much Leonard Cohen.

не мое

не удивлен, что в ключевых словах на странице этого альбома есть BORING

Not for me. Not very instrumental, slow.

I'm sure the poetry/lyrics resonate for a lot of people, but I'm just not one of them. The music is also nothing special and typical of the time it was released. This album was just completely uninteresting to me.

My opinion of Leonard Cohen went from neutral to negative after hearing his albums on this challenge. This one was particularly terrible. I played it while my assistant and I worked, but we had to stop listening. It was putting me in a bad mood, and it was making her sleepy. I hope this is the last of him. I think we've listened to four of his album, and I've had enough.

Leonard Cohen? More like peepeepoopoo.

If you can imagine eating a plain rice cake for every meal for a month is what listening to this album was like. 1001 album worthy: No - 6/12

Its ok. Im not a fan of Leonard Cohen or this style of singer songwriter music.

Not liking this one any more than the first Leonard album presented on this.

I had to force myself to finish this, he's just not for me.

I don't get the infatuation with Leonard Cohen.

Dull as feck!

Absolute snoozefest. Basic guitar rhythms + pretentious artsy lyrics. The dude is barely singing.

really not my taste at all. Very bad talk singing.

Not a fan

No instrumentation No vocal range

Wack attack self important low energy bullshit

Poetically: 5/5 Musically: -5/5

Every song sounded the same which was lame

Depression music.

I've tried to listen to Cohen many times and every time I find it too mundane. I like Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and other "storytellers" but Cohen just doesn't hit the right note so to speak.

I'm sure there's an interesting story being told here but I'm so bored by the sound it's hard to follow without mentally checking out. The most compelling song has to be Teachers as it takes on a darker tone and faster pace.

This dude bored the fuck outta me back then and a few more times than that. I refuse to listen again. So no, 1 for me.

It's weird writing this, but I like my folk a little harder than this. This is like poems with music behind it. I understand Suzanne and So Long, Marianne are the big songs from this album but those are two of my least favorite tracks.

He sucks.

Very melancholy. It's sad poetry. I should read the lyrics but not motivated to do so.

Somehow, someone found and put on this list a bob dylan album thats even worse then bob dylan!

Well that was a waste of 41 minutes and 34 seconds. Instruments were good, but I just could not stand his monotonous singing voice.

Has a hard time staying awake at work while listening to this album. I guess I can see why he is considered a must listen to artist. However, not really for me.

He sounds depressed. And like he needs to drink some water, because he smacks his lips while he sings. I hate that sound. I can hardly make it through the second song... I did get through the album, but I didn't enjoy it.

Good story teller but not gofted musically in this one

Definition of boredom

Not my cup of tea.

My second Cohen album and I'm still unimpressed. At least he sings on this one but I still don't get the appeal. This must be for people who are into poetry and/or lyrics because musically this is a boring, repetitive downer. Please, no more....

This was a dreary poetry reading with music as an after thought.

Not for me

The worst album I’ve had so far. I feel like I completely missed the point of this one. I didn’t like a single song

Not my taste in music, but the songwriting was excellent

Perfect for rainy days and laying in bed reading Sylvia plath and considering if my electric oven will have the same effect as a gas. Also barely listened to it because ewww.

Yeah nothing here for me. Lot of talk singing about all this guy’s feelings. One ok song to listen to otherwise they pretty much all sound the same.

One star is generous

Great songwriter, but not for me. 1/5

Hallelujah

If you like Jim Croche, but don't like hooks, this may be for you! Wandering tales that lack the ability to hold my attention. I would guess Lou Reed did some smack while listening to this.

Boooooring

I’m not a hater on Leonard. And granted this is only really after one listen. It’s just a little boring. Suzanne is a fantastic track and blew me away. Everything else just kinda sounds the same and doesn’t move me quite as much as the first song.

Not a fan

the melodies and lyrics are both a little too boring for me.

Don’t get it and it’s very depressing listening. 1*

Excruciating.

If you are having trouble falling asleep, try this.

This was just yuck the singer just kinda talked almond the music but nothing really happened and no songs stuck out to me.

I waited for 40-some minutes waiting for some variation in the music and his singing and all I found was someone playing with a wind-up toy at one point. The guy's expression on the cover sums up how I felt listening to this album. 1/5

Boring

The first song was pretty good, then I didn’t like the second song at all and every song after ended up sounding like that second song. Should be illegal to put the best song first.

Nor a fan

It was like anti asmr. Background music was painful to me,

Nearly fell asleep in track one. Pass.

Boring. Bad. Couldn’t listen to it

Not my tempo

i'm not really in to the whole adoration of lenny thing. his voice is incredibly boring. maybe he's a good songwriter, his songs have sounded decent when sung by someone else. but not sung by him.

#pogback

Was not a huge fan, too slow and warbly, can appreciate production was very clean and stripped back, however was not enjoyable to listen

Boring Adam Sandler talk-singing to acoustic guitar.

Good lord what in the Sam hell is this guy talking about. You will need a copy of the lyrics, google, and an hour to break down each song. Not for this kid.

I really don't understand who this music is for. It's awful. There are no redeeming qualities. It isn't even short

Not a fan of his music. No snap.

talking over slow music: the album

Boring hippie shit

Not for me

He literally sounds like he's bored while he's singing, how do people even pretend to like this. He's the music version of Shakespeare: people only say they like him because it makes them feel smart

Sorry Leonard but every song sounded the same

Slow and dull

# 22 : More music to fall asleep by. Don't listen and drive! Hahaha. Very slow and mellow, but clear and crisp. I found myself skipping tracks to get through this.

Didn't listen, skipped through - not my vibe at allll

Boring, monotone, no beat, slow.

Idk how TF Leonard Cohen has 4 albums on this list but they all sound the same to me and it's just plain boring

Very samey, and sound similar but not as good as Hallelujah

Meh, not my thing

not my cup of tea

Poetry to music. Not into it. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: Worst Song: I

Rough, boring, samey.

Not great! Out of tune and talks rather than sings. Not my thing.

Ugh. "I won't say anything 'cause no one ever listens to me, anyway. I might as well be a Leonard Cohen album." - The Young Ones 1/5

Utterly depressing

i’m going to kill myself i hate this man’s music more than anything in the world please stop

nope. not even 400 albums in and having a 4th Leonard Cohen album is absurd. This is terrorism. will not and you cannot make me. 0 poutines.

very Dylanesque. Modern minstrel. Some of it's kind of dark though- I'll follow you to the slaughter house and wait there with the lambs. The scream wailing at the end was nuts

Very boring

Oh.......my........god - dude, I hope these songs all got you laid. Definitely not my bag

Kinda boring tbh

Different music…. Not a fan

Well Leonard you are correct “this Suzanne is 😝 crazy. Great strumming on guitar not a fan of the pace and lyrics of his music

I just don't care for Leonard Cohen. I wanted the album to end much earlier than it did. I was not really entertained by any of the songs.

I just cannot get into it. I don't like his voice, and the songs don't do anything for me.

So boring. Bob Dylan wannabe. I couldn't even finish it

I enjoyed some of Leonard Cohen’s music in the past but this album is HARD to get into for me. Sorry Leonard =‘(

Het is een icoon, maar het kwartje is bij mij nog nooit gevallen.

didnt listen much not my thing

No particular favourite track.

Slightly eerie and off putting. Songs sound the same.

I find this guy so boring... It's funny how he had this squeaky voice before he got old and went on just talking over a soundtrack

Didn't finish it

Acoustic guitar melodies with Leonard singing. Each song kinda sounds the same? Meh.

Not a fan, this could've put me right to sleep if I wasn't actively doing something else.

Zzzzzzz

holy fuck resident sleeper

Morose and monotone, minimalist in composition. A folk style from the Viet Nam era. Vocals and acoustic guitar predominate with garnishes of violin, harpsicord, flute and other uncommon instruments. Percussions are almost entirely absent this album, save the occasional glockenspiel (or whatever that was). The sentiments conveyed are surely nostalgic to the boomer, but this music is inaccessible to later generations.

Not my style...sorry Leonard.

booo so boring and weird barely liked a single song

Too slow not interesting

trippy, outside expectations even for bowie

Too slow and boring for my tastes. A couple of listenable songs mixed with a bunch of throwaways.
