Reviews (page 7 of 8)
Typical electronic music. Lots of repetitive beats and lyrics. Maybe it would be cool if I was in a European club with huge speakers, glow sticks, and a drink or two.
I can tell that this is pretty decent for what it is, but I'd be absolutely never choose to listen to it again.
I assume drugs are a must to enjoy this music
Not really my thing, a bit too repetitive.
really cool sound, but it does get a lil repetitive. I pretty thoroughly enjoyed it, though.
Too much ... 2 stars
Not altogether awful for what it is, but I don't really want to listen to it.
Techno dance club type album, not very many lyrics. Last song has notes of middle eastern music.
Extremely repetitive... Not my preferred variety of electronic music. Setting Sun is cool though.
Interesting instrumentation. Singers hard to understand. Great dance beats.
EDM. I generally hate EDM -- beats are half-decent here so it doesn't get the lowest rating but I still couldn't even get halfway through before my head started pounding.
Block rocked right out the remaining tracks
Thou shall not make repetitive generic music. Thou shall not make repetitive generic music. Thou shall not make repetitive generic music. Thou shall not make repetitive generic music. Thou shall not make repetitive generic music. Thou shall not make repetitive generic music. Thou shall not make repetitive generic music. Thou shall not make repetitive generic music.
Despite a few gems, Block Rockin’ Beats and Where Do I Begin, the rest of the album is just too repetitive. Same beat over and over. Sometimes hard to actually distinguish one song from the next. 2.25
Beats to rob a bank to
Wow this is a lot and it's very long. Not for me at all.
Pleasant enough in a post-club warm down way. To say it was repetitive sounds like I missed the point, but the guest vocals added an interesting layer and took it away from the general loopiness of the rest of the tracks. Of its time.
This sounded a lot better in a club back in the 90's whilst buzzing off yer tits, compared to a tinny Spotify stream. Important at the time, not much relevance now.
Tröttsamt och påfrestande att lyssna på i längden.
I'd consider myself somewhat of a big beat fan. The sound combination of heavy breakbeats with a variety of sampling can be energizing. I've been exposed to acts such as The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, and of course, The Chemical Brothers. Although I will admit that I wasn't familiar with much of this album outside of the first track coming in. Many of these tracks sound like they were designed to be idle tracks or in club mixes and as a result, skipping through these tracks means you're not really missing much. This is exemplified in the start of the back half of the album. Although things do take an interesting change of pace at the end. I dunno, I guess I was expecting more, especially after starting with "Block Rockin' Beats".
Except for this site I usually stay clear of Electronica & then this popped up. Not a big fan but I get it…get it…get it…over & over & over. Setting Sun had a Beatles / Lennon Tomorrow Never Knows vibe, so it’s got that going for it.
Not for me. Almost cheesy with its driving beats and repeated voice samples. Sometimes this genre helps hone my focus, but not so with "Dig Your Own Hole," which I found simultaneously distracting and boring.
I was a bit underwhelmed and disappointed by this. It has a couple of big singles and all the Chemical Brothers' big beat hallmarks, but it dragged on and was just a little on the dull side. Still a good example of what it is. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Block Rockin' Beats Date listened: 01/03/24
Love the Chemical Brothers but this album didn't keep my attention. 2/5
2.5
Just electro funky music. Not really my vibe.
90s action movie soundtracks? Not horrible but not my favorite.
An interesting album. There is a time and place where I could enjoy the album, but today was neither that time nor place.
It's that kind of album that you wish it ends sooner.
I’m listening to so much more music lately and listening with intention. One of the things I’m learning is how to appreciate the way people turn to certain records or genres based on how they feel or how the music will make them feel. So I kept asking myself what moods or contexts I might find myself in that would make me return to this record. I could just not find any. I listened for about a half hour then skimmed from there. I appreciate what the Chemical Brothers are doing here. I just don’t really enjoy it.
Tsja, niet mijn muziek.
Usually a Chem Brothers fan but this one frustrated me. There are some amazingly raw, dirty breaks on here that could've made for an intense LP, but they're sandwiched between so much filler that they feel like a flash in the pan. Spun some of these tracks twice and still couldn't shake that this one is plagued by compositional issues.
Det elektronisk, det dance, det er lidt rocket og så er det højt
I am not fond of techno.
It's noise
Back with another one of those block rockin beats! This album feels like it’s the background music for an hour long fight scene in the Matrix: Reloaded. That’s certainly not a compliment but not totally an indictment either. 2 stars
1.8
Some nice throwback tunes, but the repetitive nature of their music quickly wears out this welcome.
I really thought I was going to like this, but I did not.
Impressions: Something that could make the Trainspotting Soundtrack. Also, the music gets too loud. Favorite tracks: Block Rockin’ Beats, Lost in the K-hole, Where Do I Begin Rating: 2/5
This album was a bit like a warm slab of Oscar Meyer bologna between two pieces of artisan bread, a proverbial shit sandwich if you will: the first two and last two tracks were the best parts of the album, and everything in between was a bland hodgepodge of some of the worst bits of musical elements. One of the first albums I was assigned was The Chemical Brothers' Exit Planet Dust, which I thought was really inventive and enjoyable. I had high hopes for this follow-up effort, but it really fell short for me. "Block Rockin' Beats" and "Dig Your Own Hole" had some pretty great bass parts, but after that, the songs became too long, too repetitive, and too bland. Nothing about tracks three through nine stood out to me at all. But "Where Do I Begin" was the best track on the album, and it completely outshined every other song on the album. Musically, it was incredibly catchy and unique, and Beth Orton's vocals were fantastic (appropriately enough, my favorite track on Exit Planet Dust was "Alive Alone," which also featured her vocals). "The Private Psychedelic Reel" was also fantastic, and provided a great conclusion to a completely lackluster album. If the middle of the album had been half as interesting as the last two tracks, this album could have probably been four stars for me, but unfortunately, The Chemical Brothers just didn't pull it off on this one.

1990s Catch me if you can type beats. Prefer solid listen, nothing jumps out to be honest. 2.5/5
Like the Prodigy, except the Prodigy is good.
Still sounds like the kind of music stoners play in flats above shops to impress each other. Or videogame music to an R-type or Wipeout game.
Though clubbers of a certain demographic and lifestyle will no doubt differ, one finds this to be music exclusively for vacuuming and other types of loud, high-intensity workouts — excellent in a few, limited context, irrelevant in all others. One doesn’t think “doesn’t matter” is intended as a subtitle or thesis statement but it certainly works as such. The thinkier cuts (e.g., “K-Hole”) are better than the EDMier ones (pick almost any other track). One is seriously ambivalent about “Where Do I Begin;” the first few minutes of the song are electric, fully engaging and (perhaps largely due to Beth O) borderline lovely – this is highly affecting music, the best of what this genre, whatever we want to call it, can offer; and then comes the grinding break-downs of the song’s second half, which feel distinctly incongruent and at odds with the spirit of the first half of the song – feels like a ruining, and a deliberate one at that. One simply doesn’t get the approach and struggles to see/hear any subtlety or counterintuitive creativity or anything remotely like genius or something/anything that might be lost on the non-connoisseur that could possibly explain the jarring shift-reversal. (PS: 25th Anniversary editions for acts such as this should come with a warning about their very likely overdoneness and unjustified self-importance.
Desculpa, não é muito a minha praia, mas dá pra ver que é bom.
I'm unsure to give this a two or a three, admittedly. On one hand, I didn't straight up dislike any part of this album, and you could even say I got into a song or two here and there, but this album commits the sin of being boring and over an hour long, and while it doesn't make it unlistenable like some bore fests, it is exhausting to get through, especially around the 3/4s area, where the songs seem to just be making random noises. I think I'm going with a two, because if we compare this to another dance record that's over an hour long I recently got, Daft Punk's Homework, then this is worse.
Block Rockin' Beats Dig Your Own Hole (workout music) Setting Sun
Block Rockin Beats is obviously the big track on this album. The rest felt like a bit much for me. Cool what they are doing but I may have a limited attention span for it.
That was a lot. That may have been novel and interesting at one point, but it felt like nothing I hadn't heard before and it wasn't musical enough to want to listen. Could be good at a seedy dance hall or as soundtrack, but really didn't enjoy that.
Man, this album did not age well at all. It just sounds like an off the shelf soundtrack for the Matrix Trilogy or a Guy Ritchie movie. The first track that came up was block rockin beats which I had heard before. I was pretty excited for the rest of the album however, by the time the 3rd track ended it was already starting to over stay its welcome. I'm now on the 8th track and not sure if I'll be able to finish the album in one sitting. It's just relentlessly repetitive and has no business being over an hour long...
Not my fav but liked a few of songs in real time.
I didn't feel like it rewarded attentive listening - essentially, just background music. It's probably a great time if you're fucked up at a club.
Don’t love it
Not a fan of electronica
I don't know, it's not for me. Didn't make it through.
the album was fine but not very memorable to me. i knew block rockin' beats from mashups but nothing else jumped out at me. favorites: block rockin' beats, piku
I’ve had two of these guys albums this week and all I can say is I really don’t like the chemical brothers one bit. It’s drugged out background noise for stoners.2/5
bof
This is slightly better than yesterday's The Prodigy, but it has very similar frenetic beats that are anxiety producing. It hasn't held up well over the years and is very dated sounding and annoying, but it gets one more star than the Prodigy.
Individual tracks are kinda ok in the right humour but it doesn’t work as a whole and some of it is poor.
I know one Chemical Brothers song, but no idea what it is called. I have a feeling I will probably recognise more as I listen. Oh, it's the first song! I saw The Chemical Brothers at Knebworth House in 1996, supporting Oasis for their big outdoor thing they did; The Prodigy was better though. I remember this one too, Noel Gallagher sings on this, doesn't he? ('Setting Sun') Sounds very much like him, anyway! Remember that track Ian Brown did with Unkle? That was a proper fuckin' banger. Some of these songs are waaaaaaay too long. My era, but not quite my scene. 2 / 5 stars.
I get why these guys are foundational to electronic music. I don't like this album. Its dull and industrial, without a sense of evolution or progression. It just sounds like a rave in a machine shop.
Not really a fan but it made for some decent work music
Dance music, eh? I'm not typically a fan of dance music in general. Of course, when in Rome... I'm in SEMO now, not Rome, so it's not something I'll keep listening too. First cut, familiar tune - good beats. Good sound. Let's see how far I can make it. Made it to the 2nd song. Done.
This is the second Chemical Brothers album I’ve had to listen to. I want to die. Best tracks: Setting Sun, Where Do I Begin Worst tracks: Everything else even the best tracks I would not willingly listen to again I feel like someone has taken a drill to my skull, drowned me until I was unconscious and then transported me to some kind of sick dystopia where my brain would be extracted and put inside of a robot I never want to listen to these guys again please tell me there are no more than 2 of their albums on this list or I might completely lose it. 1.5 rounded up
Pretty not great overall, few good tracks though. Not really the music I’d listen to sober, would probably have a much different opinion if I saw wired into the mains.
Wow, came close to making this my first 1 star rating. To me, a 1 is absolutely no redeeming value, and there were a couple of tracks I could tolerate: Block Rockin' Beats (ok track - thought I might be giving this album a 3, but was subsequently proven wrong), Lost in the K-Hole (decent groove), Where Do I Begin (disliked the effects at the end, but liked the beginning), and The Private Psychedelic Reel (but this one had the same damn drum track as every. other. song. Also, the same thing over and over for too damn long). However, I disliked pretty much all the other tracks. Annoying sound effects, pretty much the same beat throughout. Particularly disliked Dig Your Own Hole, It Doesn't Matter, and Get Up On It Like This. Giving it a 2 because it wasn't ENTIRELY crap.
meh
I don’t think I’m a big fan of breakbeat albums
Cette série d'albums me parait insurmontable
More boring electronica. I feel like there are so much more influential electronic records that could’ve been included in this list other than rave-era shite.
This has not aged well. Uninspiring songs left me longing for the end of the album. Not one I'll be rushing to revisit any time soon.
"You Wouldn't Steal A Car" music. Like, I respect the effort put into this album but it's very much not my thing. Except the last track which I really enjoyed. That said, one enjoyable track does not a good album make (to me, at least).
Hacker music V.1
You wouldn't download a car 1 2
I like some electronic music, I even like some by The Chemical Brothers. That being said this album doesn’t speak to me Saved tracks: Elektrobank, Lost In The K Hole
I... Did not enjoy this. Just not my thing. Repetitive. Too instrumental at times. Too long. Compared to some of the other less enjoyable albums I also think the musicians involved are less talented too. Don’t get the fuss. Not a fan.
Very frantic in pacing. I don't feel like I ever got a minute to slow down before the next track took off running. Not huge on electronic music, this was decent.
Did not enjoy most of it. Did kinda like Setting Sun, and that’s because it vaguely reminded me of Tomorrow Never Knows. Where Do I Begin and Private Psychedelic Reel were neat too. But most of it is just not fun for me to listen to. And that’s fine.
Oh look, another 90s electronic album
I like it a little more than the last album by them that I got. Not much more. I am just not into a lot from this genre.
First thought was this would be fun music to play PlayStation or N64 to. Cool stuff but can’t really hold my interest on its own. Without vocals, or live performance, and not much going on in the compositions I am not sure what I should be listening for. For it to just be electronic sounds and beats they would have to be so interesting to make it work for a whole album.
Sounds like the soundtrack for a 90s action movie. Kinda cool, kinda boring. 2.5
overrated
This is what I wrote in my review about the first Chemical Brothers album, Exit Planet Dust: "Electronica, especially without melody or vocals, can sometimes bore me, but I didn't get bored with any of it." What a difference with this album, because the only word that played in my head over and over listening to this one was "boring." I felt that it could have replaced my white noise machine to put me to sleep.
Listened to the entire hour and 5 minutes of the album out of respect for the process. Won't do that again without taking some of the chemicals the brothers must have been taking when they made this.
Listened Before? N Techno... mehhhhhhhhh.... Block Rocking Beats is an instantly recognizable single. It was the only thing I really liked here. I don't have the patience for hard techno like this. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Block Rockin Beats
Nicht meine Kanne Bier. Erinnert mich stellenweise an Prodigy.
It’s okay
Not my thing
I like pitches. I wish this album had them. Like sure, the beats are fine. They're kinda cool. I'm not usually that into the looped samples. And there just isn't really much else that can keep my attention here. The Private Psychedelic Reel was really good and surprised me right at the end. I was wondering if it was enough to singlehandedly raise the album to a 3, but even it has too much dead space, and I don't think that's really how it works anyway.
i get this was 1997 so maybe this was like fresh at the time for this kind of sound or something but idk it sounded kinda basic to me. like each song was mostly just one or two sounds repeated and there wasn't a lot of progression to it setting sun was pretty good though, that was one of my favorites, it built up and wasn't so stagnant id probably actually like this a lot more than most things that would normally play in like a party environment, so for that context its good, but imo in this listening context it was just fine
Really don't get this album... I generally quite like some of the early electronic pioneers from the UK, but this album is just miss after miss for me...
Reminds me of clubs that I never enjoyed
Ironically this is one of a very few of these albums that I have listened to 100% sober and it's the one that I Should be stoned for
Did nothing for me
I remember the era where this album found some mainstream success. Some tracks are good (Setting Sun) but some are generic, annoying and/or repetitive.
Did not hold my interest for long. Good beats, but not much diversity. Not my thing.
2 good tunes, the rest is noodly wank fodder
Overrated mess.
The album is ok I guess. Old school electronica doesn't really seem to do it to me. It's like background noise. Favorite song: Don't stop the rock Worst song: The private psychedelic reel
Too repetitive and not so interesting
love the rock drums, but far too much industrial blips and noise in place of solid hooks and melodic samples. Harsh score, but needs more melody.
Kinda the same all throughout, not my vibe
It was not quite as bad as I thought it would be, but good golly just about every song had some really repetitive part that just pissed me off. Maybe I would appreciate more in a context with more alcohol, but that's not the sign of good music.
It's not my favourite chemical brothers. It sounds a bit like fatboy slim but without the catchy hooks
2
Just not my genre and the right in your face aspect of this album specifically made it even less enjoyable for me
This sounds just like all the other electronica from the late 90s. Nothing special about this; dime a dozen. 4/10.
2.75
This kind of music always reminds me of the club scene in the first Matrix. Which is to say that it is loud, obnoxious, and makes it difficult to hear Trinity talk.
Hyperaktive Eintönigkeit?
Some of the grooves are nice, for example on Block Rockin' Beats, but overall this is much too repetitive for my tastes. For this genre that comes with the territory, I guess. 2/5.
Helt groovigt... kan inte tänka mig en situation då jag frivilligt skulle lyssna på denna dock....
This would have made a solid FIFA soundtrack; good for the few minutes it takes you to setup a match, but incredibly repetitive for any longer than that.
My only comparables to this thus far have been The Prodigy (decent) and Fatboy Slim (shit sandwich) and this falls somewhere in the lower-middle. I'd never put this kind of music on for "listening" - more of a background soundtrack or something to work to. The Prodigy held my interest a lot more - this is too or most often just incredibly repetitive. I get that "that's the genre" in many ways but maybe I just don't like the genre. Positives: i like the drum sounds...? Sum: too much of the same thing which isn't that interesting to begin with. 2/10 2 stars
Meh
2.5. Always difficult for me to get into an album like this.
nothing interesting here besides the first song
Mediocre. I can't even remember what I was listening to.
I'm embarrassed to say that I owned this CD back in the day because of the album artwork. I maybe listened to it a couple times before reselling it. Listening to it now is no wonder I discarded this CD. The loud and abrasive repetition is annoying. I get this was maybe the bleeding edge of mainstream dance / rave music when it came out but it is terrible garbage now. I do however like the loop on Where Do I Begin, and might even consider putting this album on my wall, but the music is pretty terrible.
When we listened to "Exit Planet Dust," my addled memory said that "Dig Your Own Hole" would be the better of the two Chemical Brothers albums on the list. It was the one I had heard more back in the day, but it turned out to be not all I remembered it to be. "Block Rockin' Beats," once past the iconic intro, gets pretty repetitive and annoying, and the repetitive nature sticks around with many songs looping sounds for way too long. The breaks and transitions did not nearly hit the highs I was expecting. "Setting Sun" and "It Doesn't Matter" almost saved things, but it was too little too late.

2.5
It wasn't bad but got repetitive really fast. I don't need to listen to it again. 2.5
To listen to this album straight through would require some sort of sorcery. The music gave me anxiety honestly, although I could 100% see this work well on like a TV show as background music.
was there a chem bros song on a thps game? i feel like all of these songs sound familiar. way too hectic and chaotic for me to enjoy, but good in its own way
Interesting, but just not exciting. D+
They are on to something. I do need some chemicals to listen to this for a while. It's got a time and place. But has anyone listened to this all the way through because they wanted to?
Definitely a bit too many sirens and frenetic/frantic/frenzied energy with repeating segments that quickly get tired. It gets a little more interesting/subtle in the last two tracks, but it isn't something that fits for me.
Quite repetitive
Einstrengingsleg og allt að því þreytandi á köflum. Meira að segja þessir 2-3 slagarar frá því í gamla daga voru bara semi pirrandi.
Chemical Brothers do EDM really well. The first couple of songs are enjoyable, but then I start remembering why I dislike EDM. Every song is an introduction that outwears its welcome. I keep waiting for a song to break out, but all they do is minor variations on the riff. Then that uptempo beat starts to irritate and agitate. I don't know how people manage to listen to a whole album without getting violent. Two stars because it is better than most.
Nope
It is electronic music. I am not familiar with a lot of electronic music artists so I was not familiar with this album or any of the songs. It sounded like something that would have been released in the late 90s though. Still no need to listen to it again.
Strong start and end but the whole middle of the album is really just not made for a listening experience. Maybe in a club its more enjoyable, but as music to sit and listen to its just not fun.
I listened to this like 3 times as I felt like I wasn't paying attention enough but it failed to make an impression. Struggling to remember any of it to be honest. Like I didn't dislike it but also did not care either
Not my kind of music. I could see it being ok live.
It's just a good techno album. Nothing wrong with it, just a lot of the same thing. No recognized songs
Kind of obnoxious, and the hits don't hold up.
2.5
I didn’t finish it, I thought it was boring. I can appreciate the production but it’s not for me.
bruh
Not for me. I get that this type of music is all about the beat maaaan, but as a lifelong musician I need some melody with my rhythm. Kind of like painting with just one colour.
First half of the album is better than second half. Felt like it just turned into random noise at some point
Electrónica. Coñazo.
couldn't finish
Didn't really hit the spot. Got bored
Je n'aime pas. Trop sale, répétitif.
I forgot just how tired I had become with this extremely repetitive genre of music. After the first 30 seconds, you've heard everything the song has to offer. After the first 3 songs, you know the shape of every song on the album. It had it's time an place for me, but I'm over it!
Heb ik eigenlijk met al de dance-achtige albums, thuis luisteren kan me niet bekoren dan.
The are some good beats but it's repetitive and some of the tracks are just noise.
Decent album-- nothing to write home about, though.
Hmm. Bäst: "The private psychedelic reel"
Nope. Too repetitive. Some interesting parts but sounds too much like background music. Not a fan of edm
one of those pioneering psychedelic electronic records that are kind of hard to really appreciate retroactively given the state of the genre nowadays. i imagine it's hella trippy bro on 300mcgs but pretty fucking annoying sober. shpongle was doing similar stuff around the same time and made masterpieces that stood the test of time way better than this record. chemical brothers have vastly improved since this record.
Dig Your Own Hole is the second studio album by English electronic music duo the Chemical Brothers. It was released on 7 April 1997 in the United Kingdom by Freestyle Dust and Virgin Records and in the United States by Astralwerks. The album was recorded between 1995 and 1997, and features Noel Gallagher of Oasis and Beth Orton as guest vocalists. Dig Your Own Hole was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, at the 40th Annual Grammy Awards.[14] In 1998, Q magazine readers voted Dig Your Own Hole the 49th greatest album of all time, and was also included in Q TV's "Top 100 Albums of All Time" list in 2008. In 2000, the same magazine placed it at number 42 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever.[citation needed] NME ranked it at number 414 in its 2014 list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[15] Rolling Stone included it in their list of the "100 Best Albums of the Nineties",[16] as did Spin.[17]
I seldom listen to electronica (is that what this is?) or dance music, but some of these were fun. A bit too tinny and frenetic for my listening tastes, though I can appreciate the interesting beats and artistry of it.
Eh, every track starts sounding the same
Een paar goede nummers, maar het meeste was langdradig
.
Not as good as I thought it might be. Couldn’t listen to the whole thing.
Dabbled before and didn’t much like it. Emphatic confirmation that they’re not for me.
Not my thing really. I did listen to the whole album, however.
Nah
1st album I was genuinely excited about listening to. Not for me.
Very disappointing.
Some absolute bangers on this. Holds together really well as an album too
Have to be in the mood for this. Its unlikely I'll ever be in the mood to stick with the entire album.
I like a lot of Chemical Brothers but this album was a bit too unabating, too much noise.
3
My hole is none of your business
Some of it I like - the techno and funky stuff. But then it samples sounds of people shouting or screaming and I do not like that. It's giving me a headache. It's pretty frenetic. Would probably make good music for working out, dancing, party, etc. but not for when I'm chillin' at home.
not my thing
Ends on a particularly strong and interesting track, but is mostly an hour of drum machines. Plenty of decent material, but the kind that is better in a mix than back-to-back in an LP. The samples are less dynamic than the Fatboy Slims of the world.
noooo dental pasta-like sounds staaaph there's this one song that i like and unlike the other songs, it has a female voice
I have never rated an album a 1 on this list … until now. Brainless and relentless 160 bpm meth music, which is nearly salvaged toward the end of the record where some variety and musicality creep in. Alas, not enough. Shit sandwich.
I've still not figured out what I enjoy about electronic music. It's usually not much, and this album reinforced that feeling. You'd think with a bunch of different electronic albums on this list that I'd find something that appeals to me but so far, nothing.
Listens: 1.5 Standout Tracks: None I honestly couldn't get through a second listen. I had a mild headache and this was driving me crazy while I was trying to cook lunch. Repetitive, loud, chaotic, obnoxious. None of the qualities I like in my electronica music. And then there was Noel Gallagher randomly on one of the tracks for some reason. I think at this point I would have rather listened to My Chemical Romance over this😧
i dont like these noise/repetitive noise albums. not for me. makes me feel like a grandma who took in her teenage grandson and is like 'honey can you keep it down in there?' and he's like 'no grandma fuck you' and i'm like 'i should've left you on the streets where you belong'
straight ahh icl. Nothing like their first album which was a banger. This one is just noise pollution atp. No good beats other than track 1 and just made me depressed because it totally ruined the chemical brothers for me, I don't wanna go through that ever again.
Lazy cut-and-paste electronica that consists of static hooks repeated ad infinitum. Prolly would suffice in da club but the lack of harmonic movement in these "songs" makes this boring as hell to listen to anywhere else.
I can’t with repetition
Industrial tangerine dream?? My first impression was that this was just noise - reminding me of Nurses With Wounds (which is NOT a compliment!). But I appreciated it more after listening through a couple of times. I still did not find any flashes of genius. More like flashes of “musicality” embedded in a sea of mildly interesting colored noise.
Nope
I’m sure there’s a time and a place for this album. Sunday morning in my kitchen is not it. I never want to listen to this again. Never.
Not the first time this list has given me a headache tbf
Not really my taste or preference. There is something here for someone but not I.
buns
did not finish / will not finish. Couldn't do it while working. Maybe if I was trying to run or cycle at a 120bpm rate this would suffice. I was not /will not be in the right place, right state of mind, right age for this. sorry chemical dudes.
Irritating and boring at the same time
Tried to like this, just, nope.
Not for me
The first track here is great, feels like they wrote a cool film sound track. Obviously I'm familiar with that song, so I was excited for the rest of the album... Currently I'm on track 4 and I'm getting a headache. Everything else has been so samey, bass heavy and boring as hell. I've been regretting the review I wrote for 808state cos it was very dismissive, but this album is reminding me why I wrote it. This music is not only annoying but it puts me on edge, like I'm quicker to anger when listening to this in the same way I am when I'm driving and someone does something stupid in a car nearby. Every so often it's a bit more prodigy and its alright... Such as setting sun... The weird siren riff in that track is cool too but the bits in-between that and the vocal parts are just that same angry drumbeat forever. It carries on for a while. Where do I begin was a nice departure. But 3 minutes of reverse sounds with a mumbles vocal isn't enough to reverse my headache. Man it just never seems to end. If it wasn't for track 1 it'd be a 1/5. And to be honest considering I never want to hear it again it might still be. Yeah, I just don't like it.
biggest BS I've ever listened to
This is the first one I haven't finished. I made it about halfway and was ANGRY that there was still so much left. F this album
I hate electronica and no album is going to change my mind on that.
I simply don't understand electronic music. I just don't. There is not a single thing I like about it. Empty sounds and complete nonsense.
The Good: Someone is digging a hole! The Bad: What if it is me having to dig my own hole? The Ugly: Finding out we don’t have a shovel… manual labor sucks! This one can be kept brief… EDM… HATE. Sure, there are peeps who will totally disagree with me, and love the crap out of this. Good for you! Me, I am going to listen to silence for a while as I believe I’ve suffered sensory overload today… maybe I should pop some X and try this album again? 1*
Dog dirt.
No me gustó para nada
I'm at the point where I'd prefer more britpop than more electronica.
Oof... That was a rough listen.
I’ve listened to a couple of albums by these guys and I’m just not a fan. I wouldn’t even call it music. Very monotonous and honestly annoying.
Kinda made my grocery shopping trip feel like a heist montage in a late 90s movie until it gave me a migraine
Meh didn't love
1.25 - Every time I thought something sounded cool, it either repeated for far too long or an annoying sound effect or lyric was layered over top of it.
What if it took an hour to connect to dial up internet.
I reserve the right to change my opinion if given drugs and a dance floor, but on my morning commute this was atrocious.
That's a terrible thing to say.
Those who like it, like it a lot. I for one do not.
As someone who's not into techno, it just didn't resonate with me
Yasir might like it
nope
I remember listening to this on the radio thinking about how ass it is. I get that it's electronic music, but how can they have no shame in making 11 5 minute songs of abrasive trash.
Meh
Ya escuché una vez este disco. Es una mierda.
Could not even finish this.
Caught me in the wrong mood. This felt like that industrial garbage but produced on a computer. Bailed after 10 minutes. I hope I never hear this again. - Some weird electro music. Not really my vibe. Also not in the mood. Not sure how far I'll make it.
Tutte le canzoni ricordano lo spot “la pirateria é un reato”
It's Big Beat, and it sounds like Big Beat. Not really any more to it than that. There are plenty of other, better Big Beat albums out there that sound better and were more influential. If this album was 30 minutes shorter, it would be forgettable. At its current length, it's a bit of a slog. Not a great listen, and I can't see a justification for having it on this list.
Not my kind of music and too long. Was waiting for it to be over. Song with Noel Gallagher is kinda good though.
Noise-Rock, 1997 -> 1
This big beat stuff was not great at the time and it has not aged well. Extra demerit for Noel Gallagher.
So much electronic music on here. A joy for those who love it. I do not.
Horrible
Who listens to this? Who prefers music with digital instruments over real instruments, and why?
This is awful. I would have to be off my face to enjoy this
It appears I just don’t understand this kind of music. To me it’s loudly offensive, derivative, and repetitive.
Second album après 'Exit Planet Dust' que j'avais détesté (noté 1/5). Ce nouvel album est tout aussi long et répétitif, je n'ai pas pu aller au bout =>1/5
I couldn't remember which boring electro mid 90s electro act Chemical Brothers were but once I heard the first song I said "oh that one" the local alternative station played the crap out of that song one summer but I only remember it because I was running a kitchen in 97 and one of my employees use to yell "block rockin beat" randomly throughout service. Ultimately forgettable, there's a song in here called "lost in the k hole" which I'm assuming is where you'd need to be to like this.
This is not my music.
I just don't understand how some of these electronic albums are on this list. 1 star or F.
1/5
Another day, another electronica album that I hate
Two Chemical brother albums on the the list? Because they're so richly varied?
Terrible noise
Maybe I'm just old, but maybe I just never got into the club scene because there's music you don't need to take pills to enjoy?
thank GOD there are two chemical brothers albums on the list! after the first 50 minutes of psychic damage, you might not be totally convinced that these two contemptible numbskulls are one of the worst things to happen to anglosphere popular culture, so it was necessary to include another hour to help us appreciate just how soul crushing this garbage is
I try to view all music positively, but this felt like soulless noise.
Boring
This is loud and boring with bonus random noises. Sounds like strobe lights with synaesthesia.
Hate this stop recommending them
Tror aldri jeg har migrene. Med dette er trolig musikk som kunne ha fram provosert det hos meg. Not my cup of tea.
Was so hard to listen to I didn't finish it.
Oh great, another techno album that’s just as fucking annoying as the other fucking techno albums we already got. Bailed after 6 minutes.
Not a fan.
I dislike The Chemical Brothers. 2nd album of theirs I’ve gotten on this list and the longer I listen the less I enjoy it. The beats are extremely repetitive. I will be so happy to not listen to this again.
Man this was way too monotonous and the repetitive beats just went on and on and on and on... I thought it was stuck on a loop but alas no. This was just terrible - all the songs sound like some AI generated drivel. Hope never to have to listen to this again.
Somebody’s brother born in the late 70s was in the club dancing to this nonsense
Album 872 of 1089 The Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole (1997) Rating : 1.5 / 5 If I was a fan of electronica, I’m sure this would hit the right spot - but I’m not, so it just doesn’t do much for me. I can respect the energy and the style, and I know it has its place for those who enjoy the genre, but it’s just not where my ears want to be. Cheers to those who do connect with it - me, I’m already heading on down the road to the next one.
1.5
I’m not usually the biggest fan of “robot music” and this was no exception. It wasn’t good robot music like Daft Punk, it sounded more like the shitty techno beats I made using loops in year 8. I think my one song was better than this whole album (I am definitely biased).
Horribly repetitive.
1/5
That last track did its best to save this album from its fate. 57 minutes too late, I'm afraid
Can’t remember what album I said this about last time but “YoU WouLDn’T DowNLoaD a CAr” vibes. Just not for me although I can imagine it’d go alright for studying. (1.5 stars)
This is genuinely awful. I’m only two songs into this album and I swear it’s been going on for 2 hours already. I don’t understand how anyone can listen to this music outside of people in a club. Seriously every single one of these songs needs to be 3 minutes shorter at a minimum.
leider überhaupt ned mis. de beat gat mir extrem ufd nerve, has ned chöne fertig lose.
Not my favorite. A little too techno for me.
Listening to this hurt my ears.
Not for me at all, was waiting for it to end
adri: DNF, quizas no es el mejor cd para un viaje por carretera en verano lleida-huesca, quizas una noche estando en un estado muy concreto, pero hoy no mar: DNF, antes me pego un tiro que seguir escuchando esto
No
Stop Just Stop STOP Do you need me to be even more repetitive so you will actually pay attention?
Probably would have been more enjoyable if I were high. Then again that's probably the case for most albums
Oh dear christ where to begin. This is just noise. It’s not music. It’s loud noise. I hated every second of this ear-piercing garbage. Worst thing I’ve heard so far on here. If I could give it 0 stars, I would. Who actually listens to this and thinks “yeah this sounds good”?
Fun drum beats, but far too much like club music and too repetitive for my liking
Really did not like this one. Generally not a big fan of electric music and this one felt so repetitive and long, nothing really stood out to me.
Day480 - lots of people probably enjoy this and maybe in a club it’s fine. listening in the car going to work it gave me a headache.
This gave me nervous ticks and made me aggressive when it was new and fresh and exciting. It's no longer new nor fresh, and seems a bit formulaic in hindsight (which I know is a bit unfair). It still gives me nervous ticks and makes me aggressive, though.
Fundgrube für Soundbastler und Jingleproduzenten. Als Musikalbum eher mau.
1,5/5⭐ bati estaca sem letra
TOUGH listen. It's obviously a praised album and band, but not a fan of the type of music. Ok, I had to stop listening after Setting Sun. This was torture for me. 1/5.
I didn't understand what happened here. A very crazy trip, but it didn't bring me any feelings or even make me want to dance. Meh.
Электронщина
I didn't do drugs and go to raves in the 90's, so I hate this crap.
Mostly boring and or unpleasant to listen to. 90s trance is definitely not my thing. Maybe if I was running or doing the dishes?
Booooo!!
This album is for club kids or a Grand Theft Auto soundtrack, it is not an album to just listen to. Definitely NOT a must hear.
What’s that? I’ve said there’s too much electronica on this list too many times? Well maybe that should make you think about how much electronica is on this list
Nö! Mist!
Too sober to listen to this. The beats are rough in most songs and the last 2 minutes of Where Do I Begin are just trash.
Had high hopes for this one but it failed me. Too tiresome and repetitive. For the first half hour the same song continued seamlessly under different aliases. That might have continued throughout but I wouldn’t know because for the second half hour I was skipping to the next track after a minute or two.
2.5/10 Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope
The minute this album started I got the feeling that every single track could probably be used in a movie for a car chase and I was right. I guess is okay if you listen to one or two tracks but the whole thing is pretty tiring.
Nervig. Nicht eingängig. Langatmig.
As most electronic music, repetitive and boring,
Can I give this shit a 0?
Many songs get really annoying. Nothing goof stood out
Terrible! Gave me a headache! Glad when it ended!
This album was like a bad trip, annoying, repetitive, come the last stretch all I wanted to do was curl up somewhere dark, not think and wait for it all to be over. Having listened to the (I hope only) Beth Ortan album on this list, I was not excited to hear her again, and even as someone who disliked Central Reservation, this was a waste of Beth Ortan. The most interesting thing about Central Reservation was the lyrics and here you’ve got her using the line ‘Where do I start? Where do I begin?’ Radiohead were able to do something with that lyric, but they subverted it, and they had decent music behind it, something with dynamics that didn’t just repeat the same chords over and over before devolving into irritating dissonant noise. Emil Cioran himself couldn’t produce a statement as Nihilistic as repeating ‘It Doesn’t Matter’ ad nauseam over a boring, boring, boring beat. I can’t tell you what listening to a monotone voice chanting ‘It Doesn’t Matter’ over and over again to that stomach-churningly repetitive beat for 6 full minutes while sitting on a dark beach, staring at the waves dragging rocks down into the briny depths does to a motherfucker, but I can tell you that I sure as shit am not gonna kill myself to the fucking Chemical Brothers. They don’t deserve the satisfaction. Ian Curtis killed himself to Iggy Pop! When I commit suicide, I’m going to have to do it to fucking Metal Machine Music or something
Truly, truly terrible!!!
Terrible, forgettable, painful. Like an explosion in a car alarm factory!
1/5
jesus, these guys have a hard-on for EDM. I tried, though. I really did.
