Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Eh. You know. I get it. I know they are very talented but I’m not a fan of the genre
Good but 10am isn't the time to listen really
Pretty good big beat, I enjoyed this one.
Mostly great. I found the tracks without vocals could get a bit repetitive.
Bit bored. So repetitive. Block Rockin Beats is an old goodie though
It's OK
patchy and not as good as i remember
Just OK. Some good bits, some not so good. The good bits brought back good memories, though.
5. Would have given a 6 on account of being impressed by how good it sounded for what it was, but the length got in the way of that, and the fact that many of the sounds were just annoying.
Not my cup of tea but they are great at what they do
Great drum grooves
Some really good ideas in there and I think it would be a jam in a car or over speakers at a party, but listening through headphones kinda made me lose interest in most songs fairly quickly Favorite Tracks: “Block Rockin Beats” and “Setting Sun”
I don't like electronic music, but this is one of the better ones I've heard. The songs are way too long, but some are fun.
It's alright I guess. 6/10
This one was okay. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it. I can appreciate the space for this kind of music, but it is not something I would choose to listen to very often.
Super intense for a Wednesday morning, would probably enjoy it more in a different setting
Some nostalgia value for sure, as I played a random online game with this as the soundtrack. Pretty interesting electronic/rock sounds, and somehow the "Chemical Brothers" is just such a perfect name for it.
nice techno beats, however quite repetitive. Favourites: Electrobank, Lost In The K Hole
Blockrockin' Beats is fantastic, and the rest of it is an enjoyable experience if you're in the mood for it! But that's the thing, it's gotta be the right mood.
idk I kinda forgot about this. I feel like it was decent though
It was good
Some good jams
I used to like the Chemical Brothers a bit more than I do at this point. This album has a spot for me, and it's in the middle. I'd listen to it again, but I wouldn't reach for it as quickly as the 4 stars, so it gets a solid 3.
Big beats are the best
I like the Chemical Brothers, but this isn't their best work
Spotify. Ok listen but not my thing. Singles are good.
Only listened a bit but my ears did not enjoy.
1. block - 3 2. dig - 2 3. bank - 2 4. PIKU - 1 5. zun - 1 6. matter - 2 7. rock - 2 8. like - 1 9. lozt - 1 10 . begin - 1 11. reel - 0
2/5 - The only way that I'll ever make it through an entire big beat album is by walking into the other room or putting the volume on zero. I promise I try to like this.
#253 You know I enjoy Fat Boy Slim and The Prodigy but this doesn't work for me at all!
I liked some portions of some songs, but overall it was overlong with not enough to back it up. Highlights-Setting Sun and Don't Stop The Rock.
block rocking beats - although some of it is heavily processed, and obvious
I hate dance music; it is like someone is drilling into my head. At some parts I thought the track was skipping, no that was just the song. I can tell that Setting Sun was the lead single as I thought that was good, reminiscent of Depeche Mode, but the rest was very jarring.
More British EDM. Yay.
Like rave music for people who've never been to a rave. The more it went on the less I liked it.
- Not my cup of dried rhino beetles - no thank u
The Chemical Brothesr are obviously talented and creative and I like some of the sounds they employ in their compositions but ultimately it is not my type of music
Definitely that late 90s sound, “Block Rockin’ Beats” was everywhere. You might not know the artist, but you definitely knew this song.
It's been a long time since I enjoyed music outside my personal taste; this was a beautiful electronic music album.
Another example of an album in this list evoking that post Britpop late 90s hangover period. This album does not really work as a listening experience, more of a 'vibe setter' for a room or hall. It appears dwarfed by two number one hit singles: Block rockin' beats and the collaboration with Noel Gallagher from the previous year, 'Setting sun' that was unquestionably buoyed by its Oasis connection. Beth Orton also appears as another guest vocalist but doesn't lift the album out of the 'gets dull after a while' mark band!
Too long. And fairly uninteresting, tbh. Energetic, though. I yearned for more vocals (which often worked on the album) and, well, something that seemed less . . . plastic/mass-produced.
just loud and annoying
2/5
Not a fan
Mostly meh.
I quite like bit i need singing little sing song like mary and the Peter rabit double tap the screen if you get it
This is some some EDM/electronica. But that’s not for me. I find it most engaging when the reporting ate broken up with catchy, hooky lyrics, or overall changes in structure. Too many track feel like they are on repeat. Block Rockin’ Beats
Listening session: may 10th, while chilling at home Listened to before: no Thoughts: this is not my genre, but when I’m in the right mood I can enjoy a track or two. Not an entire album though Favourite track: Elektrobank
Not loving this one either. Quitting it early.
1 hour of boring-ass beats
Piku was my favorite track. It’s my first time listening to this front to back I’m very much reminded of late 90s and early aughts video games and movies. Unfortunately it doesn’t really do much more for me than scratch a vague nostalgia itch.
Dull.
Music you need to take drugs to enjoy but also can't really dance to. No thanks! I appreciate this led to good stuff (daft punk) but on its own not working. I'm imaging two disgusting pale brits high on ketamine.
While I would never choose to listen to this of my own free will, it did put me in a trance long enough to finish most of the chores I needed to do… meditative I guess?
Pas aimé du tout
Noises. Just noises. Basically Ross from Friends with his keyboard. Extra point for the sheer gall to release this tosh
4/23/26. Some cool songs, but don't think I'm a fan of this genre based on what I've heard so far. I find it repetitive, although there are a few Chemical Brothers songs throughout their discography that I enjoy.
This list has way too many 90s British electronic
Fantastic first track and then proceeded to completely lose me
Not really for me, each track was just repeating itself for much longer than necessary.
Not for me
Not my thing, but I can appreciate it for what it is. Actually glad I stuck with it to the end, since I recognized Beth Orton’s voice immediately.
I didn't have any emotional connection to this. Often, good records in genres I don't often like or don't feel like listening to pull me in nonetheless and put me in the right mood, but this one didn't do that. Just missing a certain something that sweeps you along with the big sounds; instead it went over my head
The second album by the Chemical Brothers and this one hit a little different. Maybe starting with Block Rockin Beats put me in the right frame of mind but I thought this compilation was slightly more enjoyable. The sounds were full and I found it hard to not groove as the songs went along. Ultimately the house music gets tiresome and I want a change to something more entertaining.
I liked the part where they repeated the same words again and again over the loud beats. That was the best part, I think.
they are a singles band
I used to enjoy this. Now I find it grating and terribly redundant. I get it, that’s what 90’s techno was.
2nd Chemical Brothers albums from the generator and I'm just surprised that the albums with their biggest songs aren't here? Well, this one was better than their first album but it still wasn't crazy good or anything 2/5
Other than Block Rockin' Beats this is just kinda ok. The repetitive nature of the lyrics & music wear thin on me in the Electronica genre. Some of them start out fine & then after hearing the same thing again for the third time & there's still more song. It gets old.
Ook niet voor mij
Just not my jam. It has a few interesting bit, but lots of sharp edges and repetitive. I can see why these guys were sought to remix during the era but this album did not really do much for me. Honestly sounds so much like Prodigy, some of it, and I guess that's what annoys me about the genre, so much has similar beats and sounds the same, IMO.
Transitions are p cool, extremely repetitive and drawn out
My rating 2.0. Boring heavily sampled electronica.
2.5 Really not my thing, can recognise its good though but I wouldn't want to listen again
Like a lot of its ilk it is a repetitive soup you sink into. Aside from the Norah Jones toy surprise at the end I just was not really in the mood I guess? Maybe it hasn't aged that well?
This is good music to work or drive to. Just kind of a mid tempo trance like groove. It isn't something I need to learn to play or listen to on repeat but it has a place where it would be quite enjoyable.
late 90’s electronic. Nice listen not my bag.
Not my cup of tea. Too many short repetitive loops that never seem to evolve into anything other than other similar short repetitive loops.
Niet voor mij
Is there such thing as too much of a good thing? This album should work so well on paper, and the mix of electronic music with rock energy is a cool idea, but overall the experience feels pretty shallow and meaningless. I imagine this wold be awesome to hear nobbed off at Glastonbury or something (idk whatever you Brits say) but outside that context I felt myself wanting more.
Ooooh, that’s really repetitive. As would be expected with nineties electronica. Last time I listened to Dig Your Own Hole was way back in the aughts, and it’s better in my memory. Block Rockin’ Beats and Lost In The K-Hole carry the album. L = (1.1111111) Felt like I had been rufi’ed in a bad Swedish disco, then the cops showed up, and someone stepped on a cat. Could not get outta there quick enough. J = (2.45*s) Did I hear an electronic sitar?
Another album of repeating notes, strange sounds, and disjointed rhythms. I just don't get the attraction to this kind of music. The best thing about this album was that there were only 11 songs, although most of those songs were way too long.
listening to some BS rn LMAO what is "Dig your own hole" I swear this kind of music is designed to get you angry. WTF is the end of elektrobank and the start of Piku
Meh
Felt longer than it was, and its 63 minutes long...
Picked up a lot of vibes from this album: dentist's office, outer space, Deliverance, construction site...
Not for me, alas...it took days to listen to this. Some of it was interesting, though.
Are you REALLY into Big Beat and EDM? If so, this is essential listening. If not, dont bother. 2.5 stars.
A couple of good tracks, usually when there are vocals. I don't mind this genre but I don't find it translates well to the albums format personally.
At 8am this album pissed me off
I do think it's a hair better than some of the other noise-machine albums.
TBT that time I put on Discovery and my grandmother averred, "This isn't music."
I didn't really enjoy any of this?
Ugh two days in a row of the Chemical Brothers?? This is also the fourth electronica album I've gotten in the past 7 days, and I am over it. This is the better of the two Chemical Brothers albums on the list, but they also aren't significantly different enough that I feel like including them both on the list was justified.
I feel like I could just copy paste reviews for all these late 90s Electronic/Dance albums. Repetitive. Very repetitive. Loud, annoying, and uninteresting too. It's just not my genre.
The hits are fine, but I just can’t take it, when the music repeats itself for so long
I didn't really catch those times, but I've been told that back in the early gaming days when people were playing fighting games if someone were to keep spamming the same thing, they would've gotten their ass kicked. And it didn't matter who you were playing with, randoms, friends, or even your dad - fists were flying Now I guess these guys actually lived during those times, tanked all the beatings, picked up the instruments and were like "ahh, finally I can spam the same shit for ten minutes straight"
Part of me liked it more than I expected and the other part was getting heart murmurs
Not too big on electronic music...
Well, listening to this in the kitchen, sober is not the same as listening after drinking, or being high, so it’s a low score.
It was ok. Quite repetitive. Standout song: Setting sun
Dig Your Own Hole has all of the same problems (and more) that Fatboy Slim's You've Come a Long Way, Baby had when I listened to it. It's repetitive, bland (when it's not a complete migraine inducer), and feels egregiously stiff and robotic. Maybe 90's+ electronic music isn't for me, but all of it is so boring, it's just the same repetitive beat for 5+ minutes with maybe a couple samples that are also similarly repeated over the span of the song. Dig Your Own Hole follows this exact formula, save for the last two songs, "Where Do I Begin" and "The Private Psychedelic Reel", which were really the only two songs that I liked off of this album. I really just don't get why they had to pick such ear-splitting, annoying samples to intersperse their songs with, it just makes no sense to me. I really find it hard to see how I enjoyed this music only a few years ago. Favorite Song: "The Private Psychedelic Reel"
This album tricks you by having a solid and fairly engaging opener, the devolves into more generic techno boringness for the rest of the runtime. I don't understand the obsession with making these songs so long. The exact same effect can be achieved in half the runtime, and I would argue could make the songs more effective and memorable
I enjoyed the singles and a little of the first half was good, but after Setting Sun the album drops off for me. In particular it doesn’t matter and don’t stop the rock were slogs. The psychedelia of Where do i begin is a pleasant sidestep but overstays its welcome and the last two minutes just feel like they didn’t know how to stop it. The psychedelia continues with the final track but again this is overlong and soon resorts to the standard big beat lack of actual tune
This is still not really for me. I was familiar with “Block Rockin’ Beats”, which is a solid track, but the rest just became noise.
I already knew Block Rockin' Beats, so I enjoyed that out of familiarity. Otherwise it was fine to have on in the background. Dance/eletronica albums always feel fundamentally flawed to me, as let's face it, sitting and listening to an LP isn't how this music is supposed to be enjoyed. Maybe this project will introduce me to the album that changes my mind, but this isn't it.
More robot noises from the 90s. Not the worst I've heard on this list but not anything I'd like to revisit.
Is big beat the worst genre of all time?
The Chemical Brothers are aptly named as the whole album felt like some mad scientists mixing samples, beats, and sounds in a lab. Some interesting brews, but, unfortunately for them, gold can't be made in a lab. If Death Grips and The Prodigy had sons, The Chemical Brothers may be it only they ended up having that weird set of twins that invent their own language and are just kind of weird... Takes me back to the blood sprinkler scene in Blade. 2/5 tablets of molly.
Oh my God make it stop. It Doesn’t Matter sounds like my broken washing machine, just stuck on the same cycle forever. I’m not giving this one star because I know it’s not made to be listened to at home like I’m doing. I should be drunk off my ass at some dance club with lots of strobe lights. I still think I better be pretty wasted before I walk in to be able to tolerate it for very long. It is very very mindless, lacks melody, only about movement. 1.5 stars, I’ll round it up for you ravers out there.
Not my thing, but it's okay if it's your thing.
Gonna say it every time. I don't understand sitting at home and listening to music deigned to be played in dance clubs. This would be great in a dark club on a head full. At home on a dreary January Saturday, it's just irritating
There will never be a situation where I will want to listen to this. It’s well made and it’s nice and shinny and not for me.
not my type of music
Kinda fun, but I felt like I knew the whole song after l the first minute
This droning, repetitive irritation reminds me so much if the late 80s and 90s club scene that I tried to avoid. I am not a fan.
Some of it is okay background music. None of it is interesting enough to really listen to.
Reminds me of the music that played in that anti piracy ad that played before every rented movie in the 2000s. Didn’t like it at first, but it’s okay background music.
I actually didn't mind listening to this - as a one off. A bit too much going on and the overall length of the album (at just over an hour) is a bit much for repeated listens of this style of electronica, which isn't really my thing. I'm glad I experienced it, but this isn't going in my library.
Nawet git
Definitely not for me. 1.5
Second and final Chemical Brothers album. It hasn't been too long since their previous album - it was just over 80 albums ago when I listened to Exit Planet Dust. I thought that album had a sweet album cover and title, though I wasn't too big on the music. The album was only 50 minutes long, though I felt like it went on for way longer than that because of how long-winded the tracks were. One of the songs from it does occasionally pop into my head, however. It was one of the early tracks which was carried by some pretty cool, raw guitarwork and pounding drums. Anyways, I know this is their big release, so I'm hoping they can win me back over with this one. Hmm. Just more of the same, really. When I think of big beat I usually think of something intricate and lively like the Jet Set Radio soundtrack. This music is pretty threadbare by comparison. The biggest disappointment to me is in the bass department. It doesn't have nearly as much growl as I would want from this genre. To be fair that could be a function of streaming services sucking dick, though given this band's track record I'm somewhat doubtful. The minimal production doesn't really do much for me, either. Repetition is a integral part of how big beat songs explore themselves and increase in intricacy, though these songs never really manage to get off the ground floor in that respect. There's also the matter of track lengths. Many of these songs are just way, way too fucking long. Overall, I like the cool, underground aesthetic of big beat and this album delivered in that respect, though I never felt invested in what I was listening to. Book time. Where the band found it's footing, though that's as far as this album's legacy goes in the eyes of the curators. I think big beat is an interesting genre and I know this is one of the key players within said genre, so I suppose I could let this one through. I cosign this inclusion.
Woof. Not for me. Probably would appreciate as background music for a high energy activity, but didn't jive with office work on a gray December day.
2.36
Another mid tier electronic album. Left me in a state of despair. I found it mildly annoying and unlikable.
This was kind of hype, but also just really annoying at times. I have already found many albums on this list that I could come back to if I'm feeling electronica. I wouldn't necessarily choose this one.
Mir deutlich zu elektronisch. Mehr eine Aneinanderreihung von Geräuschen als Musik. 2/5
I guess the point is to be repetitive, but it's not for me.
Unremarkable.
It certainly had that classic late 90s electronic music sound. Although I recognized the first song, all of the others sounded very, very similar to that although I have memories tied to that that type of music from the late 90s it didn’t sound very deep very superficial. Two stars.
It’s dance music. Simplistic does what it says on the tin good at what it does but nothing much beyond delivering beats.
very repetitive
Alright for background noise at the gym, but rather repetitive.
Favorite Track: Where Do I Begin
It reminds me of when you fall asleep watching a film and wake up and the credits are rolling. I think this is meant to be experienced live
Bad British techno
Fine for background noise while cleaning out my closet
This is not my favorite type of music, but it wasn't too offensive to the ears. I think of this more as noise than music.
One of my biggest issues with groups like The Chemical Brothers is that at some point all of the songs sound the same. And this album was no different.
This may be great for fans of its scene, but it’s definitely not my cup of tea. The whole album evokes a dim, strobe-lit European dance floor packed with zoned-out bodies moving in slow, hypnotic waves. It’s all atmosphere and repetition, but nothing that sticks with me or feels memorable.
Sounded original, and that first song, I remember as being somewhat of a hit. But this genre of music is not for me. I tried reading to it, running to it, and listening to it. Kind of failed in all three accounts.
Chemical Brother 1 "Hey, man! Listen to this cool sound I can make on my keyboard." Chemical Brother 2 "Damn! That is cool. How about you just do that like 157 times in a row?" Chemical Brother 1 " Fine idea, my brother in chemicals!" Chemical Brother 2 "And maybe we could get that old drum machine that only holds two patterns to add a dance beat." Chemical Brother 1&2 "We are musical geniuses!" All the young people in the UK that are tweaked to the gills on Molly "You ARE musical geniuses!" Sure, I get it drugs are cool and making dancing fun. But c'mon people. All things in moderation. How could anyone outside of a club want to play this? "Elektrobank" makes me want to hurt people (brothers in particular) I had high hopes for "Where Do I Begin" with Beth Orton when it started. But then they loop her and it descends into madness. I am giving it a 2 because honestly parts of this are better than a lot of electronica foolishness. But knock off maybe 2 of the songs. And then never let them all be played in a row again! 1 or 2 songs while partying seems a fair prescription.
Dette hadde sikkert vært kjempebra om jeg hadde vært interessert i klubbing, men det er jeg dessverre ikke. Liker de mer poppa greiene deres, da.
A interesting album for an electronic music 2/5
Pacy, but repetitive. Sampled sounds to quite a driving drum beat but for me not that musical.
More like a 2.5 stars. Good but not really something I’d see myself listen to a lot. Except when I need to freak out, maybe
The Chemical Brothers are pretty cool! I respect their electronic sound, because they don't sound like other electronic artists. Their music is so electronic it includes electronic sounds and incorporates jazz and psychedelia. Regardless, Dig Your Own Hole was too repetitive. The guests vocalists helped the album's variety, though.
Just really not my thing.
Not my favorite electronica.
In context--at a club--I'm sure this is really fun. But as casual listening... it's obnoxious.
Some of the grooves are very cool and interesting, but most of them go on for far too long. While there are vocals on a couple of tracks, it doesn’t do enough to make this a better record.
Meh 2/5
I have loved every album I have heard from them but had never heard anything before Surrender. God this was awful. Setting Sun saved this from a one.
Funky and good but lengthy
Thoughts before listening: I have always thought of the Chemical Brothers as a group that puts out songs I like in a genre I don't like. That being said, outside of the handful of hits, I am not sure I am going to be all that in to a full album. Review: Well this starts off with one of the hits in "Block Rockin' Beats", and its still a banger. The rest of the album however gets very repetitive to me, which I know is part of the appeal. This music is meant to be listened to in a club or at a festival at 2am on a headful of drugs. I'm sure it hits in that scenario, but for me at my desk this morning I'm kind of getting annoyed. 2-stars
Feels like a 90s film montage or something out of the show Skins. Not my vibe really.
Ehh
Not really my thing
Kind of the same throughout the album. Started strong but it did not finish that way...
I like the 120bpm for a run, but otherwise it's a little repetitive for me, especially as someone who spends a fair amount of time listening to the lyrics
I understand that some of the sounds are creative, but it's too repetitive and just noise for me.
This gave me anxiety
Average PS2 racing game soundtrack
Sick
Every Brit who is like “you just had to be there when they were big” about a nondescript techno group from a city the size of Kansas City, Missouri now probably supports Nigel Farage
*tired sigh* back with another one of those block rockin' beats. highlight (being generous here): "Where Do I Begin"
2.6
Kinda surprised how bored I was during thos album. And by 97 or whatever, there was a lot of good electronic bubbling out.
Boom, Wicka, Wicka, Boom, Boom ... Drugs are bad!
This was like listening to Boys Noize, while waiting for NIN to play during the Peel It Back Tour.
bouncy fun atmospherish forgettable
2.5
Once again this is alright, but it would be better in the right time and place. This is a very aggressive and loop-heavy album, the kind of music that sounds best witch flashing lights and a fog machine. Unfortunately, it is lacking in substance without that. Favorite tracks: "Setting Sun," "The Private Psychedelic Reel"
Good, not great.
Supposedly, big beats are the best. Superhans got that one wrong
Nope. Still not a fan.

Thought I would like but I did not!
I can understand being mesmerized by the music but I ultimately find it unappealing.
Not my vibe. No es una apreciación técnica (sé que son excelentes en lo suyo) sino que simplemente no me gusta.
Not terrible, but with most electronic albums, the songs should've been half as long and even then they would've run together
I’m not digging anything, man.
Could not finish
Its not bad, and contains probably Liam's best vocal performance ever. Sadly a B-Tec Prodigy.
Just ok
not for me
Sounds like a modem connecting
“Lost in the K-Hole” A Memoir by Elon Musk I find it strange that people sit down and listen to this sort of thing (sober). I enjoyed their videos in the past, but this album is just too much. Club music for people who don’t go to clubs.
Not my cup of
Normally, I dig this kind of music but I found all the various beeps, dings and alarms really jarring and the overall effect just kinda boring.
Rating (1-5): ✩✩ Higlighted songs: Meh Got kinda boring to me :(
Gah- not for me. It's catchy at times, but in the way a jackhammer is catchy after a while.
Perhaps this made the list because it is the epitome of this genre but I found very little listening enjoyment in this album. Sounded like a videogame soundtrack but without the distraction of playing said game, all you have is the music to pay attention too which frankly kind of sucks.
By chance (or not?) it’s Glastonbury weekend and my only experience of the Chemical Brothers is seeing them there on the TV. Image that sticks out are those goggles they wear projecting beam on light from their eyes. Looks good and suits the music. Glastonbury all well and good but in the cold light of day and playing this album I do not get the same vibe. From what I can gather the music is just one part of the Chemical Brothers experience. Live there is lots of artistic visions and movement going on to accompany the music. Take that away and rather like the Riverdance album without the dancing you only get half what you paid for. 2/5 28/6/25
Grows boring after a while.
Way too long for something I can barely stand. Got to the 3rd song.
Not raving, so it’s a no.
Wife didn’t enjoy being subjected to this. She was rather appalled
There is way too much "club" music on this list. Why would you sit down to listen to this? At least this is a little more interesting than the last one.
BOOOORING
Good start, but went way too experimental towards the end
Perfectly fine to bop around to, but I also gind it unbeliveably boring the more I focus on it. In a club it's probably great. Sitting on my cluch trying to listen to it as an album, not so much. To quote The Chemical Brothers, It Doesn't Matter. All of these songs blend and I find it quite boring. Block Rockin' Beats is fine as an album representative for my list.
This music makes me feel like I’ve taken acid.
I didn’t care for it :(
Quite meh, all songs sounded the same.
decent electronic music, not for me but good
This type of thing aint really for me
I did not like this it drags on forever! It’s so damn repetitive and the album goes on for more than an hour, there is no reason I should ever listen to this again. That being said, having thought about it, it wasn’t offensive or anything so probably like a 1.5 but I’m giving it a 2/5
For the most part, this was not objectively bad. It was grating at times, too long for my tastes, and not a genre that I ever seek out, but it's probably fine for those who enjoy this type of music. It gets points for originality, but not enough to overcome my personal preferences. 2.4
Not my jam, but I can see the draw.
3 songs in and I'm ready for this album to be done.
Interesting, though ultimately not my thing.
5 minutes in: These beats aren't so big. 10 minutes in: Is it just going to be like this for an hour? I'm over it. 20 minutes in: I am the beat, the beat is me. 45 minutes in: No, I'm over it again.
Overall: 4/10 More likeable than most electronica I've listened to, but still so repetitive that I can't bring myself to enjoy it too much. I need variety in my music and this isn't providing enough of that. Each track features one really good beat looped over and over again. I'm glad the beats are good and danceable but, again, it's not enough. Fav Song: Setting Sun Least Fav Song: Elektrobank
#570. If I was 22, at a club, high, drunk, or high and drunk then I might like this. But I am a 30 or 40 year old man listening to this in the car on the way to work. And its super repetitive without being interesting in any way. Kinda reminds me of the Prodigy or Orgy, but less interesting. 2/5: pass
Decent beat/sound but not great. Lyrics are a bit goofy. Mid overall.
Decent but not for me
Like the other Chemical Brothers album, pretty boring, not bad for doing work, maybe 1 good song. High 2.
Was kinda too weird for me I think. Off-putting at certain points
Ikkje essensielt i mitt liv
Ei ole meikäläisen musiikkia. Tuntui että kappaleista olisi voinut ottaa 80% pois eikä olisi menettänyt mitään.
Not really into techno.
Most of this music sounds like it should be playing in the background for an action movie chase scene. There are some cool grooves here but it gets so repetitive and tedious very quickly. This is dancing music, not listening music. I'm not an artificially amped up club kid so I won't be dancing or listening to this one.
Just like every other dance/electronica album with no BPM changes: great if you're on some sort of substance; incredibly repetitive and boring if you're sober.
Back with another one of those cock blocking electronica albums.
Not for me. Would definitely fit as the soundtrack of an action sequence in a movie, but this kind of background-noise electronica bores me.
Another album that doesn't really work with sitting on your sofa in your pyjamas eating your muesli in your mid 50s. There are a couple of standout tracks but its Big Beat tricks do get tiresome pretty quickly if paid close attention. A bit better than Fatboy Slim.
One gets the appeal – loud, obvious, hooky – without finding it very appealing oneself. This belongs in a club or at a rave, and preferably with a tailored drug regimen (sans tranq, natch and obvs). Otherwise (with the possible exception of the gym [and only on high intensity workout days]), it simply doesn't suit anymore. Beth Orton's contributions save one half of one song. It's odd that such aggression plays as tedium in the end.
Not much to say on this one. It isn't bad just way too repetitive for me. I also feel like the tracks could have been arranged better to give a more balanced listen rather than every track just building up from the last.. 2.5 out of 5 with bankers rounding.
hasn’t aged well, dumb in a dumb way
Sinister and irritating.
Not bad but not really my type of thing.
You need to be in a very specific mood to appreciate big beat. The Prodigy has the biggest nostalgia factor for me - elder millennial here - so The Chemical Brothers are already at a bit of a disadvantage. This sounds like playing a racing game on the original PlayStation feels: it was cool when I was a teenager but hasn't aged well at all. Yeah, sorry, this is just as much a snapshot of the 90s as Donovan's Sunshine Superman is a snapshot of the 60s, but with a lot less heart. I'd rather leave this in the late 90s with my sequined spaghetti strap tank top where it belongs.
A bit too raw for a saturdaymorning 2/5
Another Chemical Brothers record, another matrix soundtrack. See my previous review of the Chemical Brothers, my feelings towards this one are literally identical, this album just had more vocal samples, I guess?
Absolutely of its time, great workout music, but not something I'd go back to just to have on.
Standout: The Private Psychedelic Reel. Would probably go crazy for some of this in a club or something tbh.
So subdued that I can't imagine it functioning as background music, much less being played at clubs - I pretty much forgot I was listening to it early on.
1.5/5. I don't mind electronic music, but I found this to be unbearable.
Definitely not my genre
Sorry I wasn't able to make it past the 4th song. I'm sure the album has its place somewhere - just not in my listening room. 2 strs
2.45
Surprisingly found this fairly enjoyable
Repetitivo pero con ideas interesantes.
Music for drugs by drugs
I started off thinking I'd really like this album, but by the end it felt like one really long track of noise.
Pretty run of the mill electronic music. A little manic at times and still not a great listen while just hanging around the house. Maybe better at a club. 2.5/5 Won’t listen again
Nearly all the tracks go on for a few minutes too long. I've enjoyed Block Rockin' Beats since hearing it on Big Shiny Tunes 2, but even that track I usually find I can't listen all the way through.
If I was at a rave and on ecstasy, I think I’d give this 5-stars for sure!
same 3 second sound repeated for 5 minutes
endless loops and samples. man, i just don’t get this type of music.
Not my thing. Gets cold quick.
not my vine
Very frustrating. Some really good/cool stuff, but way too overlong and anonymous at parts. 2.5/5
Not for me. Too much going on in a very 90s way.
tis not to my music taste

2 - Long stints of repeated sounds that just annoyed me. Elektrobank killed it for me.
This kind of music just doesn't make sense to me. I mean, it's kinda cool sometimes but it looks like some background music of some car parts shop.
Some cool breaks mixed in throughout, but even if I heard this live I wouldn't be impressed.
Hated Chemical Brothers back then, still don’t like the sound. It’s too heavy and dark, I prefer my electronica bright and happy. If you’re into aggressive music, this album is for you.
Half familiar with them. Saw them live at a festival once. This is like… electronic rock? Or ? It’s not not something I would listen to. It sounds ambitious and very forward considering release year. I like how the songs transition
Good for background music, I guess. Aside from the first song (Block Rockin' Beats), nothing really stood out to me. Didn't hate it, but won't listen to this album again.
If I were a passenger on a road trip and the driver said they need this album to help them stay awake, I'd say, "OK, but not too loud or it'll give me a headache, alright?" Other than that, I'll never voluntarily listen to this again.
Not good enough to be that repetitive.
I can see how this would be fun at a dance party, but it's super repetitive and not my style.
House music is not my thing, I felt like I was listening to the half time music from a basketball game in the nineties
I thought this looked like a really good album. Only one song I actually liked much, Where Do I Begin. Too techno instrumental for me to enjoy the album.
I had to stop at about 3/4 of the way through. I couldn't take it anymore. Block rocking beats is a banger, but a lot of the rest of it was pretty intolerable.
I just watched Vanilla Sky and I knew this music sounded familiar haha. It's... very 90's
This one hurt my ears as I listened to it at home, but I do not think this is an album for casual and relaxed listening. Best locale is a club, post drinks, when you'll dance to anything or as a movie high action scene soundtrack.
I remember being a kid and hearing my mom say about this sort of music: "This isn’t music, this is pure noise!". I remember thinking to myself "She's too old, she just doesn't get it". Listening to this album 30 years later made me realize something: I'm sorry mom, you were right... There were a couple of passable songs, but some of them made me want to pull my hair out. I'm still not sure what would make a 1 star rating, but this one was really close.
Ugh.
51/100
Oh brother. Thought this was okay for most of it but I stopped lying to myself on the last song cause I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Some of it was just early 2000s video game music (or lethal league), very repetitive for the most part but not infuriating. But good god that last song made me want to put my head through my windshield. This is the type of music playing in the background as Johnathan Wickathan clears out a club. 2/5 still better than Kollaps
Repetitive driving workout music. Could've been Prodigy for all I knew. Solid in certain settings.....but then again, so is most music.
I feel like I just spent 63 minutes playing Twisted Metal on my PlayStation1. That game always gave me a headache after 15 minutes. I’m sure this is high-quality electronica. But my score is based on how much I enjoyed it and the likelihood I would listen to it again.
This album forced its rating down by choosing to keep a couple of annoying songs on an already lengthy disc. Rave material that’s too fast for most workouts and too long to bounce to in one sitting. 2.5.
4.5/10
Probably 3-4 stars for the opening track and the albums to come. But two for this album.
Find someone who loves you the way people in the 90s loved listing to the same sentence over and over and over again.
Put this one in the category of things that I can see how it could appeal to someone, but that someone isn't me. It's a '90s British electronic album that has some rock-ish moments. Most of the songs don't have lyrics but a few do. I generally liked the lyrics songs better. Noel Gallagher sings at one point, so does Beth Orton (I did like her song). There were moments here and there where I was getting kind of into it, but they never lasted super long. It's a bit of a long album too at 63 minutes. When this ended Spotify played an LCD Soundsystem song for me, and in some ways I can see the similarities between the two groups, but something about this just doesn't quite hit as much for me. Favorite song: Where Do I Begin Other: Block Rockin' Beats, Setting Sun, Lost In The K Hole 7/31/24
Eg
Not my taste
Heidän käsityksensä ajasta on minulle liian ajaton, mutta välillä massan seasta erottuu jotain vastustamatonta kuin It Doesn't Matter. Levy tuli jopa kuunneltua skippailematta.
Not a huge fan of EDM because it seems repetitive and droning, but if I was tripping balls this would probably be a jam.
electric grove. Kinda OK. do i chill to it or dance at the rave?
Kind of same-y and forgettable with the exception of "Block Rockin' Beats", which sounds like the strongest template for the rest of the album.
I dunno man, like I get it, but I don't like it. Maybe would have enjoyed more back in high school on drugs.
Ça a pas très bien vieilli.
Not the type of music that interests me in any way. Talented nonetheless
Becomes monotonous.
2 1/2
Lost In The K Hole and Where Do I Begin had some nice moments, but unfortunately there were more moments I didn't like.
The last third of the album is more suited for my taste. More mellow, even psychedelic on the last song. But the middle of the album is so boring and uneventful that I can't give it more than 2 stars.
What a waste of resources.
This kind of music is so far from my taste that I can barely rate this. The only way I can enjoy this music is in a 90s action movie like Mortal Kombat.
There were good moments but it always became unpleasant within 30 seconds
Lots of components I liked but finished product was kinda mid
