Reviews (page 6 of 8)

A lot of these songs feel like it’s just a dude singing and messing about and then it gets serious. Very children story like songs I noticed that the first songs gets resampled in the song “checkmate” by Apathy Wouldn’t really listen to the entire album again, but worth a listen

Some pretty great epic tracks on here. Phil Collins voice really shines through, though the instruments used tend to feel quite dated now, and many tracks overstay their welcome.

pretty good tbh

I don't know what just happened but i dig it

ok boomed

Never heard of this band, and it's a band from the 70s so my expectations were low. Was pleasantly surprised. The first track starts out kind of weak but picks up pretty quickly. They definitely got an "ok?!" from me. This seems like a niche band, but a lot of the things they do with their guitars are things that I would expect to hear from much more modern music. I like that these guys are experimental with their sound. Not a fan of how long the songs are. They suffer from being a band of the 70s and the tropes that follow that. A strong 3/5

Cat: Fuck yeah

Like a psychedelic garden party where the gnomes start jamming and then the mad hatter takes you on a tour of buckingham palace. Ridiculously English folky. 7/10

Ehh it was fine. Not a super prog rock person.

Schysst platta. Med lite inlyssning kan den bli jävligt bra.

i like it

It's interesting, but not my cup of tea. It's crazy how little this Genesis resembles the I've that got famous in the 80's

Not what I expected at all

Not their best in my opinion. Those last two songs could be 4 total of they just ended then on time...

While I do have a lot of Peter Gabriel and Post-Peter Genesis in my collection, I haven't spent much time on their time together. That being said, I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, especially The Cinema Show, which is very Genesis regardless of lineup. 3/5

A band I’ve always meant to spend more time with. I’ve always had a copy of Invisible Touch (just picked up an OG the other day) and I know the Lamb Lies Down very well. HUGE fan of Gabriel’s solo stuff and a fan of Collins’ solo stuff but never dug into the rest of their catalog. I mean I’ve heard this but never gave it the time it probably deserves. I have a feeling this is exactly the kind of music that people who hate prog rock are talking about when they say they hate prog rock. It’s very English. Very noodly. Very full of itself. I’m honestly not sure where I fall half way through it. I’m still mixed on my third listen. There are parts I really dig then there are parts where it makes me want to stuff things in my ears. I have a feeling this is not the best starting place.

I have to like Genesis, my Mum says so. My childhood was filled with Genesis, but I can't really remember much of it. I think my Mum (and Dad, come to think of it), were more into post-Gabriel Genesis, so this is fairly new to me. Although I have just reached up to a CD rack near my and pulled a cassette tape out, and it is 'A Trick of the Tail' if that counts. Rambling a bit, JUST LIKE THIS FIRST SONG, am I right?! Kidding, this is great so far. The bass sounds great, I always hear the bass first. Lovely record, just sit back, relax, and listen to the stories. 3 / 5 stars.

Not really my genre of choice, but I appreciate what they did here. As far as prog goes this is better than most I’ve been forced to listen to before.

I thought this was pretty cool. Definitely different, rooted in atmospheres and suites instead of traditional pop song structures, and I think it works for the intended vision. Very pastoral/medieval English vibes, with a big sweeping sound. In my head I always associate them with 80s synth and solo Phil Collins, so I'm interested to explore more of the Gabriel-era stuff.

I listened to this at least twice and I’ve got to say there are both Peter Gabriel albums and Genesis albums I prefer. Having said that it was good but probably only a high 3*

Enjoyable.

Immersive best listened to as a whole album rather than individual tracks

Would probably like more if I was paying attention

Some surprisingly interesting moments early on but the rest of it kinda washed over me

I thought I was going to like this a lot less than I did. Yes, it's overblown prog nonsense, but it's actually listenable nonsense a lot with a better eye for a tune than, say, Yes.

Very interesting, felt ahead of its time in parts. Can see how much they've influenced rock music Wanted it to build to something more, like a specific "here is what we're trying to say" moment

Ugh. I've avoided this for so long. I've never listened to old Genesis. Could not escape their 80s pop stuff. It was actually a pleasant listen for the most part. It's like Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins and some weird amazing guitarist had a band in the 70s. I ended up with positive feelings on this one. Cool

3. Enjoyed listening, but probably won't come back for seconds.

Genesis has had better in my opinion, this isn’t their best album. It just feels a little- not boring but “plain”. There just wasn’t anything out of this world about it. It was still good, but average.

Pretty experimental for prog rock. Never too experimental, but perhaps that’s why I found myself becoming bored with it. Was pretty repetitive and no big change up throughout the album. Enjoyable and entertaining, but that’s all. 3/5

Good in spots, actually very good in spots. The problem is that it's typical of prog: too up it's own ass, too long, and sometimes goes places that I don't really want to go to. I think I could grow to like it more but I'm not really planning to revisit any time soon.

I’m not usually a fan of prog rock, but I liked this. I don’t think I’d listen to it again but I enjoyed it all the same. This was a quirky album that I felt had hints of glam rock at times.

Very good prog rock album. Quite weird but that's to be expected from this genre.

Huh. I hesitated to listen to this because I expected the worst but it's actually pretty good. Cute sound, held my attention for the entire duration

Talented musicians making weird 10 minute long renaissance fair prog rock bollocks

Ah, prog rock. If this doesn't say "I'm a white Englishman who's over 40" then probably nothing would. Technically very adept. At times odd. At more times, boring. Overwrought and showboaty.

Timeless classic

Bit all over the place. Whilst I enjoy whimsy, this went a bit too far.

Poor man’s Pink Floyd?

I enjoyed this slightly more than I expected to, especially as Genesis were reviled by the punks and post-punks I grew up with.

I wish the longer songs were split up because I enjoyed individual parts of them. Ahead of its time

Very very prog

not my cup o tea

Two bits about the recording process from "Selling England By The Pound's" Wikipedia page are very meaningful in shaping my opinion of this music. "'Dancing with the Moonlit Knight' evolved from a number of short piano pieces composed by Gabriel, which was combined with some of Hackett's guitar figures to make up the track." ...and... "Two sections that were brought into the sessions from the start were a simple guitar riff that Hackett had been playing that the band liked and wanted to develop further and became 'I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe),' and three bits from Banks that he initially thought were for different songs but were instead used in the final arrangement of 'Firth of Fifth.' The third section developed early on became the opening of 'The Battle of Epping Forest,' and the band repeatedly performed these three pieces daily for a short while which Banks thought resulted in the latter song being too overworked." Just the latter song!? Almost all of it is overworked! And disjointed. Even more so than most progressive rock, I feel. Most songs had parts I liked. And most songs had parts I really didn't like. I had never heard early Genesis before, and I'm amazed by how different it is from their 80s output. I knew both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins were in the group, but I had never known that Gabriel was the original lead singer and that I only know their music from after Collins took over as singer. I'm actually shocked that the only two Genesis albums on the list are from the Gabriel era, especially considering they had way more hits (and ones that seemed to stand the test of time) in the Collins era, especially on "Invisible Touch."

Good prog rock album

A conflicting one for me. Some parts of some songs I absolutely loved, but then other bits just seemed to ramble and drift a bit too much. I think I quite liked it but I’m not sure. Feels like an album that requires a good few listens for it to click, but I dont think I want to give it that much time… Certainly interesting that’s for sure!

The prog rock sound has aged really well and the 2008 remaster I listened to was nicely balanced. Some of the songs go on a bit too long but it didn't spoil my overall enjoyment. Highlights were: Dancing With The Moonlit Knight Firth Of Firth The Battle Of Epping Forest

Started off really interestingly then disappeared up it’s own arse.

Self indulgent early-ish prog full of guitar and keyboard noodling. Several 10 min songs. Terrific jazz drumming. Gabriels offbeat lyrics and delivery. Obviously not for everyone. I was the music of my youth so can't be too harsh.

I didn't expect too much from the ratings, but I really liked this. This whole albums sounds like it's set in a fantasy land. It almost reminds me of Queen's first two albums. I don't know whether I'll come back to this but it was a fun listen. Fave track(s): Dancing With The Moonlight Knight, The Cinema Show

Felt like I was listening to a play. Very over the top but good

This album played and I listened and then it was done

It's not *bad* so I'll hold my 2... but maybe I just don't like prog rock. If it's an acquired taste, I can't see myself ever listening to enough to acquire a taste for it.

Fun to listen to, feels very British and accessible while still being prog rock. Didn't really command my full attention though, due to the rambliness in places.

Not a fan of this sort of prog at all, I find it completely cringe-y and souless to me. It's fine though, just my personal tastes.

Favourable hobbit sounds Picnic x3

Pop un tanto agradable de escuchar. Sin estridencias. No destaca especialmente. Ningún tema conocido. Un poco blandengue

Genesis is a supergroup of great musicians. This album is a production. I could listen to this music all day but difficult to swollow in dedicated listening session. This music requires a full theatrical event to be fully appreciated and to keep the audiences attention. Parts of this album make it a five star recording while others barely deserve 2 stars. This is a difficult album for me to rate because I love art rock, the musicianship, and the composition but at the end of the day nothing sticks with me. Their following album "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" is very similiar in style and form. The difference being it sticks and I'm singing the title song right now as I write this. I have a lot of admiration for this album, it's just not my favorite work of Genesis or Peter Gabriel.

It’s always been a difficult album to listen to but prig is prog

Really not that big of a fan of their progressive stuff, or a majority of the progressive music that came out during the period.

Genesis halt, was ist mehr zu sagen. Gutes Album. Hört sich heutzutage allerdings sehr komplex an, daher nicht mehr ganz so gefällig.

It was perfectly fine. There is a quaintness of arrangement/orchestration I can’t look past that makes it less interesting to listen to. I understand it’s importance but it lives in the time it is from without moving beyond that time. It is a stepping stone to better things from both Genesis and Peter Gabriel.

Alls ekki slæmt, alls ekki frábært. Mikið prog

At first I was like "ew no way" and found it irritating, but got more into it as time went on and enjoyed certain punchy riffs. But on the whole I'm not sure this level of prog is my bag. But certainly not a write off!

I like Genesis sometimes but can't say I loved this. It's definitely interesting to listen to and fun but was quite hard

I respect what this band brings to the table. There’s a lot of good playing here, theatrical vocals, unique orchestration, winding sonic passageways. But it’s just fine. It doesn’t knock my socks off or keep my attention as much as other prog classics.

Songs went on for a bit too long, wasn’t bad

It gets to be a little much.

18th November 2022 Listened in the morning while getting ready to go to London to watch Jamie T with Sav. Anna, Seb and Charlie with us for the weekend. Few epics thrown in among some original folk prog, Genesis were one of a kind.

I was excited to listen to this because it was the first I’ve gotten that I’ve heard before. I was surprised by how underwhelmed I was however. It was good, but nothing I’d rush to listen to again

вроде норм)

Pretty good

Didn’t do that much for me.

Surprisingly dreamy and bleak in equal measure. I hadn't ever really appreciated Phil Collins drumming ability, seeing as most of my thoughts on him are based on his solo stuff, which I really am not a fan of.

Long tracks. Another just fine album

Lots of recognizable guitar riffs, flutes etc. nicely put together album.

“It’s the battle of Epping forest baaybeehhhh”

Need to listen a bit more, liked what I heard

Nice keyboard and guitar bits, "Firth of Fifth" has such a compelling buildup that only progrockers can pull out. I would've love it as a whole, too bad I'm never a fan of all these glam rock-ish sound driven by such a charismatic voice.

Some parts of me loved it other parts made me think God this guy is a pretentious bastard

Reminded me of Mr. Toads Wild Ride 4/10

So, prog always feels like the artists conflate "best music" with "most music". Still, I get where people are coming from wrt Peter Gabriel's vocals and Phil Collins' drumming. There's just so. Much. Going. On.

Some of the songs drag a bit but it has a lot of good ideas.

Metasis

First song slapped. Had some other good songs throughout

Decent, didn't really sound like Genesis

Quite like this, possibly the most Rush-like of their albums I've listened to. But it's still pretty wibbly and just when you start to think they're onto something they start another tune. I Know What I like excepted of course, great track.

Good, but largely overshadowed by its contemporary, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Ultimately makes me think of crime scene tape...You're pretty sure something significant happened here but the best advice you can get is to keep moving, nothing to see here.

This was good for the background but I think I would get sick of it if I stopped to actually try and listen through the whole thing

Classic 1970s sound.

Not really my jam

Epic album, but not really my jam.

"Yeah, I like their earlier stuff better."

Ikkje særleg mykje appellerande for min del. Albumet er det ein kan forvente av Genesis.

3/8, 38%

j'aime pas phil collins!

Can try what I want but progressive rock will.never be my music. These songs keep on going on and on and on without fascinating me, while music of much greater length like e.g...minimal.music.or african rhythms or Sister Ray of the Velvet does . Guess not in my blood. Can't judge the quality, a neutral 3 stars.

ehhh too storybook fable for me

Beautiful soundscaping on this before there was such a thing as soundscaping

Some enjoyable instrumental sections. Not a favorite, but not bad. I didn’t have time to properly focus on it.

Easily top 10 prog rock albums to come out of 1973. 3.3/5

Many unnecessary notes.

If i'de grown up around this I know I would have been a big fan. Can see their influence in many bands.

the weird stuff was ok. easy listeing stuff was painful like some boring music you'd hear in a taxi

6/10. Good, but boring for bits. Could probably be a 7 on a good day

Quirky but stands the test of time and much is ahead of it’s time. Cover art. It is art unlike many. Love the story of the addition of a lawn mower to the original painting.

Great start sort of folky rock but tailed off a bit.

There are some beautiful moments, and some pretty cringe-worthy dated moments as well (Battle of Epping Forest). Interesting, but something I would have listened to of my own accord - which is why we do this I suppose

I love Peter Gabriel, I love Phil Collins, and I really like Genesis, but this album doesn't quite make my like list. It felt like it was pulled right out of mideval times and that's not to say it's bad. Just that none of these songs caught my attention or made me want to listen again.

Groovy.

more like selling england by the £9 becasue of inflation

I've discovered a liking for prog-rock through this list, but this listen was tough. I've always had trouble getting into early Genesis, maybe its Peter Gabriel's falsetto or the weird hippy-dippy Jethro Tull-like flute music. I do get early Genesis' influence on music and would give this a second listen at some point, but don't see a heavy rotation from this one in my future. 3/5.

The preferable era of Genesis.

Because the world needed more navel-gazing about England. Best track: I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)

A pleasant listen

This album is weird to me, because it sounds so much like something I would like, but none of the songs really hit for me. I think whoever the lyricist is just don't quite work for me. Always misses by a hair. That said, most of the instrumentals are very good, and the drumming is incredible

Not sure what it is about some of these classic British rock albums where it seems the band was strung out on drugs when they made it. I like a lot of why Genesis did but this was tough and a little all over the place.

Interesting. Have I heard Genesis before? Not that I can recall. Had some very cool sounds and parts I really enjoyed, but also got quite rambly. Some of the songs were just too long. Still, I enjoyed it. Probably would have liked it more if I were actually listening instead of working, but alas. Time is precious.

Very interesting, I liked

Rating: 6/10

I hadn't really listened to much of Gabriel-led Genesis, (which is odd as a I have a soft spot for 80's Peter Gabriel). First time listening to the whole album, quite enjoyed the prog-rock, best experienced inside a wardrobe.

just not for me lol - i made it halfway through.

A colleague just noted today an article discussing the shortening of attention spans in the modern era. I must be a victim. I had a hard time with this one fading away into the background during its long long passages. I also had a hard time imagining that this was the same band that produced "Invisible Touch." It's not going to be my favorite, but it was fun to hear the Genesis of Genesis.

So....I don't really like prog rock. There are definitely good things about the genre, but a lot of it, for me, feels like forgettable stretches broken up by the occasional bit of good music. There wasn't anything I specifically disliked about this album, but it was also hard to get too invested in it because of how slowly developing it is. Also, Jesus Christ this album just keeps going, doesn't it? Like, I'm 37 minutes in and there is still one hell of a lot of album left. 3/5

3.3 - Sometimes unlistenable, often downright joyful. It sounds like a rock opera about forest elves who have developed advanced technology. The synthesizer sonics are lame, except around 8:00 on “The Cinema Show.” Genesis ejaculates signature changes and they wank through epically meandering chord structures. There are some laughably bad stretches of ungainly noodling, stepping up and down from one key to another. All that makes for some ghastly melody lines. The lyrics and subject matter, so much as I’ve been listening for them (which I mostly haven’t cared to), seem utterly preposterous. And, unfortunately this is another British album that features Monty Python sounding skits, which seems to be a regrettable trend among Brits of this era. BUT, this album does reward at some stretches. There’s an amazing guitar solo around 5:30 on “Fifth of Fifth.” The vocals are excellent. Peter Gabriel sounds incredible on “More Fool Me.” Glad I gave this a listen.

i didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. it had the potential to be a 4 but some of the songs just dragged out. i also wasn't a fan of a few of the tracks, those definitely brought down the album. i feel like it wasn’t very outstanding. maybe i’ll revisit it, but i don’t feel a strong urge to

The production is incredible. The execution is incredible. I realllllllly wanted to dig tf out of this but maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood. I’ll definitely come back to this, but it’s a bit much, which is why I haven’t listened to it multiple times already. I will come back 100% focused. For right now, the songs just didn’t hit as hard as I’d like them to.

At first i was like "oh no..." at its worst, lyrically it feels like bad showtunes but musically some of this fucking rips.

Quel dommage...

Proggy, pre Phil the Thrill Genesis - sign me up!! Fav tracks: Land of Confusion, Mama.....oh wait.... where are the standouts? This album kinda blends together - maybe their pop stuff is more my style.

Wasn't wild about this. I much prefer their later work.

Médium

I want to be into Genesis because there's so much of it and there are so many people who revere them. There's some really good songwriting here, I think. And the Battle of Epping Forest was so 1973 that I couldn't help liking it. But there's nothing here I'd put on a playlist.

Much of this washed over me, but in a very pleasant way. There are some wonderful standouts such as 'I Know What I Like' and 'Firth of Fifth', the latter especially containing some wonderful textures. Listen closely and there's often something interesting happening - problem is, I wasn't compelled to zoom in enough

A progressive rock classic. Long incredible solos. Genesis took the fusion of folk and psychedelia to the extreme. (6/10) FT: Firth of Fifth

it was okayish

Good not my favorite genesis album

Rock progresivo.

Moments ot brilliance. Gotta love Peter G. 3 1/2 / 5

Doesn't sound anything like Phil Collins after he left Genesis. Wasn't but, just not what I was expecting.

Not my thing, but can't say it's bad. Awesome instrumental, actually. Liked After The Ordeal the most.

It's a strange one. I enjoy listening to this record, as a piece of music - stellar musicianship and some great stuff going on. As for my personal enjoyment - I can't see myself saying "Cor I really fancy listening to Selling England by the Pound", there's a lot going on, it's very erratic, it's not easily digestible. There are a couple of songs I don't really care for as well.

Some decent prog upon first listen, will give another go certainly

This is definitely something. I appreciate it, it's very interesting and I could imaging it growing on you.

No really for me

Very reminiscent of early Split Enz - it outstays it welcome but has some pleasant moments.

Classic rock. Good gems.

very long songs

Good, early Genesis, although I prefer the later incarnation of the group. Some good songs on this disc.

Solid album that lands somewhere between Pink Floyd and Rush

Twas only ok

Second Listen. I am a fan of Genesis, but this has been an album I hadn't heard much of until this list. I knew a few of the songs before listening. This is one of those albums that will take a while to really get into. A very strong 3/5 for now.

det var ett bra album.

Genesis is an interesting case for me. There are loads of songs that I really enjoy, both from the Gabriel and the Collins eras, and I pretty much grew up with their music. I admire their musicianship, and I think they're an extremely important band in music history, especially for prog rock. Even so, they've always been more of a pick and mix and a Best Of band for me. I rarely have what it takes to listen to an album in its entirety. Maybe especially with their earlier material. Even so, this is solid 70's Genesis.

Fine album. Nothing special. 3 stars.

This is a pretty decent album with a fantastic first half and an enjoyable but patchy second half. I loved Firth of Fifth before listening to this and like I Know What You Like, even if the latter remains more as a recurring presence and joke in Top Gear. I also enjoyed More Fool Me a fair bit and Isle of Plenty a fair bit as nice side closers. Although I quite enjoy long songs, some on this were just not interesting for me. Epping Forest was a bit too long and was waiting for The Cinema Show to be over as it was one too many. It's good but not my favourite Prog Rock album.

Very progressive.

I like prog but never really got into Genesis. This didn't swing it for me. Good playing but the song writing was average. On the plus side it makes punk make so much more sense.

So. Very. Proggy. One day isn't really enough to get my head around this, there's so much to unpack. On paper it could easily be terrible but I think I actually quite like it. It's ambitious and cinematic and quirky, and there are sections of music I really got into for a moment... before the album took yet another left-turn into a 4 minute instrumental bridge or folk interlude. Also, shout-out to Philip Collins for the best drumming performance on the list so far.

just doesn't stand out as much as it thinks it does. 3.4

I love me some 70s prog. This album has some high highs and some low lows. Not my favorite Genesis album but when it hits it hits hard

Some moments of brilliance, but overall just too proggy for me.

Recognised one song and like it, but not won over by the rest of the prog-ness. Not awful, might try again. Difficult to get past Flight of the Conchords send-up (Lord of the rings song).

Ik ben een sucker voor prog. Dit stemde mij positief.

Typisch dat Peter gabriel op dezelfde manier zingt als phil collins.

It’s fun!!!!!!

Solid 3/5. This one will only get better.

cant believe bojo is in genesis! selling england and that!

Sehr stabiles Rock album

Unsurprisingly I have mixed feelings about this album, as it is anything but homogeneous. Firth Of Fifth is interesting. What are those time signatures? Wikipedia says 13/16, 15/16 and 2/4! Super cool! But the complexity brings with it a certain allovertheplaceness. It's a classical-feeling glam-sounding concept-y album with neat art and an ironic title. At the risk of sounding like every other album reviewer in the world, I must say I keep hearing bits of Pink Floyd here and there. It's almost freakishly similar to ELP's Pictures at an Exhibition in aura. Things I like: the complexity, the ambition, the wordplay in Aisle of Plenty, I don’t think it takes itself that seriously, some of the instrumentals (especially The Cinema Show), it got me interested enough to read more about it on Wikipedia, you could listen to it many times and still find interesting things you hadn’t noticed because it’s very varying in style, it doesn’t repeat itself, has everything Germ Free Adolescents lacks. Things I dislike: has a bit too much of everything Germ Free Adolescents lacks, it’s a bit all over the place, the vocals are kind of jarring in my ears and sound a bit like football supporters, feels like they’re doing this just for their own fun as a sport, none of the songs really got to me, slightly show-off-y at times. Strong 3.44 stars.

I liked it but not every song really suited me

Ok album. Genesis was better on the 80s when Phil Collins did more of the leg work. This album felt like he was underutilized and they focused more on the instrumentals. 5.9/10

1. That guitar riff has it, and those vocals. Damn, going to enjoy this. 3. Firth of Fifth - that guitar solo is hot! Fuck, going to look into that. That's filthy, I love it! The rest isn't hitting as hard. Probably a 3 for me. Maybe 4 simply because they're more experienced instrument playing wise and lyrics. Peter Gabriel is great but being an 80s baby, always prefer Phil Collins singing for Genesis.

I knew none of these. I could hear elements of War of the Worlds and The Divine Comedy. Didn’t sound like it was from 1973!

Ehhh it's like King Crimson without the interesting riffs

More fool me is a great song After the ordeal is a nice instrumental Songs are each too long, not nearly as good as his solo music

Really liked the started, but got a bit lost by the end. Still a decent listen

If they took out all of the needless arpeggios this album would only be 30 minutes long and much better. Still, the parts that are good are really good and I found myself leaving this one on in the background for most of the day.

Old rock, muy calmado y con algunos solos que sorprenden. El tipo de rock que escuchas en un viaje muy largo.

Uma cheiração de peido do caraio.

Had a much more rock sound than I expected. Quite few songs are nice but some are too long and get tiresome.

2.5 afgerond naar 3

Not my genesis album i guess

Really enjoyed this one!

Musically sound, very intricate. You forget just how talented this group is. Not my favorite Genesis album, but definitely one most prog-rock Genesis fans would love.

Very trippy

I have never listened to early Genesis. I did not expect this. Still there were some rocking bit in between the more surreal ones.

a bit too odd and quirky

The first track was a hoot. I mean..... it's almost a parody of the worst excesses of 70s prog. Something Bill Bailey would come up with. Great musicianship though. the joke wore thin by the end.....and it wasn't meant to be a joke in the first place. But I enjoyed it anyway

very long tracks. starts weak but ends strong. average, would relisten

I'm not sure why, but I expected to hate this. I actually quite enjoyed it, but wouldn't listen again.

Sorpresa total. No coneixia aquest disc i m'ha semblat molt interessant. Dens i recarregat, necessitarà d'unes quantes escoltes més per poder fer-ne un veredicte just. Però la primera ha estat impactant i m'ha provocat una molt bona impressió. I no m'ho esperava. No sé per què tenia els Genesis com un grup poc interessant, però veig que al menys l'època Peter Gabriel mereix ser explorada.

Rock imitando a trovadores medievales.

Cool prog rock from the early 70s. Reminiscent of Rush. Phil Colins' performance on this album is unlike any of his solo works.

grew on me not bad

particolare.. alcune poco ascoltabili

Fav song on album - The Battle of Epping Forest

Brought back memories. Berlin. Phil Collins lead vocals on More Fool Me. Enjoyable but not critical to revisit.

some of the songs didnt need to be that long but the guitar solos were good

Started strong but got a little too experimental and meandering in the end. 3.

A hard listen for new ears. Some nice motifs in songs and definitely worth a listen. Just not my thing, yet.

Early genesis...should be good.

Much better than expected

a daring album by genesis. I liked it. Maybe a little too uppity for a rock album.

Proggy. Not my usual cup of tea, but highly enjoyable. Makes me want to listen again and check out more of their albums.

Good tunes. Rocking steadily

Strange album

weird album, the songs are long and different so there are good parts but its hard to give each song an identity of sorts

It was fine. It got a little esoteric toward the middle. It sounded like Pink Floyd mixed with Steely Dan

Liked it more than I thought I would, really interesting album. It’s easy to forget that genesis started off doing art rock like this, I honestly prefer way more than the direction Phil Collins took them later on

I'm only really familiar with Phil Collins-led Genesis (mom likes "A Trick of the Tail"). It's amazing to see they started as an extremely proggy-Rush-ish band and went into 80s pop later. It's not bad, just a little pretentious and not for me that much. Favorite tracks: "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight", "The Battle of Epping Forest"

This is what Wendy from Peter Pan listens to. Sounded like a doily.

The more prog-rock I listen to, the more I realize it's not rlly my thing. Feels like something a Russell Brand character would enjoy

I see the appeal but not for me.

doing too much time also hecka long songs bro

Bit of a whimsical yawnfest.

I can’t tell if this is hilarious or twee self indulgent bollocks

Renfaire music

Kinda get why it’s on the list. But really not for me. Kinda glad, to have some of my preconceptions confirmed as we go through the list

Phil Collin’s not a fan

Weird in a way that made it hard to take seriously

There are a few good songs but the overall album just does not stand up to the potential of the band members.

Oh hey an Outkast sample! That’s about all I got, just no patience for prog and Gabriel even if I do admire what the Collins and co are doing instrumentally.

Uber proggy Genesis album about knights and shit... no thank you.

I’ll never understand genesis I don’t think. At least the Peter Gabriel version. Just so hard to get through and does nothing for me.

I can't with this.

A little puzzled by this pick for a Genesis album I must hear before I die. They certainly seemed to be finding their prog rock groove by this album, which is NOTHING like the vibe of the band by their biggest selling albums in the 80s. In fact, the two Genesis albums on the list are so much like each other AND so different from that later Genesis sound that I can't really see the argument for including them both rather than this one (OR The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, the other selection) and maybe Duke or Abacab. Certainly both of the included albums can be cited as influential to all the prog rockers that would follow, including Queen, Jethro Tull, and Rush. But why say we MUST hear Genesis, then ignore essentially ALL of the albums that made them one of the top-selling rock groups of all time?

Barely finished but did.. songs are very miss or... okay. Made my wife and I anxious on a few songs lol

Early Genesis, not really my jam

not liking the Peter Gabriel version of this group

I think I just don’t like Genesis. The instrumental sections were pretty though

Sure… not really a prog rock fan tho, especially not Extremely British prog rock

I just don't like it. I think the over the top focus on Englishness in the first song put me off and I just never came back. The actual musical performances didn't help. I know what I like (and it isn't this). Favourite song: I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) Least: The Battle of Epping Forest

Not the best

Progressive rock.

Not really a fan. Very bland for something calling itself prog rock..

Didn’t love it. Feels pretty much how the album cover looks. Like I’m a care free toad frolicking through a forest

I'm sure I may have enjoyed this on another day, but it felt like I was slogging to the finish. Only really liked The Battle of Epping Forest. Prog rock can hit, this was not one of them days.

Thai was a bit too erratic for me. I liked a lot of the instrumentation and musicality of it, but beyond that I really did not enjoy listening to it at all. 2.5/5

Did not know a single song on here which surprised me because eo their commercial success. It was much more weird than I thought it would be and not in a bad way, but still not really my thing..

Dear god, no wonder punk rock happened. What a steaming pile of doo. Why anyone had any inkling of digging this material is beyond me. Bloated, catchy only in transition pieces. I guess it can have a star because it remarkably has a'stylitic' relationship to better sounding Genesis material that came later.

I respect Genesis, but do not like this album of wandering ballad rock.

I like Genesis. I love Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel. I am hoping for a better Genesis album.

Really not my style of music. Would be fun in a musical? Best Song: Dancing With the Moonlight Knight Rating: 4.5/10 Stars: 2

Maybe Genesis needed to go through the school of Peter Gabriel. But do we really need to sit in the same classroom for an hour?

This album did nothing to get rid of my dislike for Genesis.

This just didn't hit with me. I typically like Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel, but more solo than in Genesis.

I wanted to like this more ….

Was quite boring

It’s kinda mid. No song really stood out.

I didn't hate it but it was a pretty tedious combination of prog-rock and folk.

Another week derailer. Inexplicably iconic drummer/nerd Phil Collins rears his presumably balding head once again here. I've mentioned this before, but the unfortunate part of discovering 50 year old albums 50 years later, is that the previous 50 years happened. I have had to endure decades of people talking about this guy, thousands of non-consensual listenings of "In the Air Tonight" and because of this, I have developed a distaste for the guy without even really hearing most of his discography. Does he have some sort of blackmail on important people? Although, we've seen that building a system that rewards sociopathy is run by (GASP) sociopaths and there are no consequences for any of them, so your 15 minutes (50 years) might be up ol' Philly. Keep your head on a swivel, pal. Those photos of the baby eating seminar are readily available on the the official USA government twitter page now. This is actually a semi-interesting prog album. It is reminiscent of Rush, if they were doing a set for preschool children. A sensory inclusive journey through the cosmos. Or East London. There is a Renaissance fair vibe to the whole thing that ensures I'm still in some pain, but overall, we made it through and I have a shred of respect for Genesis. Anything above a one is a massive victory for this record. Now please don't send me Genesis again. Don't want to press your luck. Big bucks, no whammies. 2-2.5 HIGHLIGHTS: You alright bruv? You 'it your 'ead pretty 'ard.

I'm still listening to Lamb on Broadway, which isn't a totally terrible album... but I really had a hard time with this one. It feels really disjointed. Nothing clicks. Mostly I think this album is annoying. Could not get into it.

Anstrengend.

Didn't love this one.

Maybe I’d have liked it in another life.

I found this as exciting as the Book of Genesis.

Musically this just feels a mess. Masses of over-elaborate twiddling that frequently sounds incoherent, like the worst kind of improv modern jazz, with instruments taking turns at jumping in with portentous chord progressions that don’t take you anywhere, nor have much seeming relevance to the song lyrics. As to the lyrics, well, at least there’s kind of a theme, but it’s a curiously fogeyish little-England one that often sounds twee. The album gets one extra star for trying, though.

Thought I’d love this cos I love Phil Collins but it really wasn’t for me!

A little too meandering for me. Don't need the 10 minute songs and don't understand the rhythm of the album.

I'm on the fence on this - I really like the olde english medieval vibe and there is some great musicianship on display - but in parts it just disappears up its proggy arse - eg Battle of Epping Forest - and just becomes noise.

Early Spinal Tap. That film didn't half get 70s and 80 rock music. Now I can't take albums like this seriously. I'm sure it was on the edge in 1973, just sounds a bit cheesy 50 years later. The Cinema Show is cringeworthy 70s synths.

A lot of pros seems to rely quite heavily on lutes ands other medieval plinky plonk that I could do without. Overall it was ok, 2.5 but I’ll round down to 2

I feel like I should like this because it’s Genesis, but I couldn’t even finish it, damn

Its good listen but didnt captivate me a lot.

I kind of wanted to like this a lot more. Iconic and influential band, however it was a bit of a rambling mess. So fantastic moments, some great ability in show, but it didn't hang together. The lyrics are annoying at best, the subs are all over the place and it's themes are weak and rambling. I expect much stronger prog albums to come.

Just not my jam really

It’s like the smelliest guy at the Ren Faire keeps telling you about his band and you just want to get away. But he keeps talking.

I was trying to figure out what I would call this genre. Minstrel rock? Pastoral rock? I knew Genesis was a prog rock band well before their pop fame in the late 70s and 80s, but I had no idea the extent of their progness. I actually liked a couple of songs but most of it was a miss for me.

If the Incredible String Band wandered out of their woods and stumbled upon a cabin, where they found some folks who had instruments that looked like theirs, but had wires attached that somehow plugged into the wall to make them louder, then they all sat down and jammed on the most pompous, ridiculous songs they could dream up, you would get this album. Maybe I missed something when I listen to this, but I doubt it. Hot garbage.

some good songs but too long

Not for me. At this time, 1973, I was 15 and deeply into Bowie/Roxy Music/Mott and not prog rock. I was waiting for the next thing which for me was punk/new wave. This music did not speak to me at all, especially the emphasis on virtuoso playing.

Liked some songs

This is #day523 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… it's time to close out yet another band, as this is my second and final album by Genesis. I don't know how to feel about this prog rock stuff, or rather, I do know: I just don't give a fuck about what's going on. It's like listening to a fairytale you can't focus on, no matter how hard you try, and God knows I've tried. For some reason, I gave their previous record a 3, but I'm not doing that again, sorry. Weirdly enough, during "The Battle of Epping Forest," I heard black midi (must have been the vocal delivery). This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day524.

Same old, same old from 70's Genesis. It's fine, but not really an enjoyable time for me.

It’s too proggy for me. No real catchy tunes

There are some cool moments in this album, but these moments are brief. I'm not as big a fan of the prog direction of the Peter Gabriel version of Genesis as the later direction of Phil Collins, personally. Just too much prog. (Also, Phil Collins is great as usual.)

Not my type of songs

Mixing prog with British twee every day life observations is one of the most tedious sub genres of prog but it's decent in part, I think Peter Gabriel just saves this from being totally abysmal 2.5*

piatto

Pros: synth sounds, when they settle into a groove and the guitar takes over, the pop informed bits, the odd heavy riff Cons: the neo folk pastoral stuff, the clever for its own good overly elaborate compositions, flute, the lyrics, the acoustic ballad bits, the meandering stories that dont go anywhere.
