Reviews (page 9 of 14)
Apple Music calls this a top 100 album of all time. Thats pretty absurd to me, but it does have probably a top 100 album opener of all time. Hotel California is a terrific song that fires on all cylinders, I love the grooving bass and that solo. But other than Life in the Fast Lane, I cant say I enjoyed this, i actually liked their more country self titled debut more. The rest of the songs here are just so hyper-polished and made-for-radio, to me it kills any emotion they try to convey. I do appreciate the sentiment on The Last Resort at least.
Its the Eagles - you should probably listen to this (or I don't know, a greatest hits collection?) before you die just for cultural edification, although you've probably heard the song "Hotel California" and that should give you the gist.
This album blasts off. Find me a more iconic opening track than Hotel California. Off like a shot, this trip through the dark underbelly of California - not the sunny care-free surf side of the summer of life, but instead a depraved journey of sex, drugs, and rock and roll through the first three tracks, ending with Life in the Fast Lane. The album seems to fizzle after that. While Wasted Time and its Reprise are good, the back 2/3 of this album leaves some energy to be desired. Don Henley is a trash can of a person and continues of a trend of iconic rockers who have somehow shaken the public shame of their history of otherwise bad behavior.
Little variation but very good!
Beyond the two standout tracks, there really isn't too much here Favorite Songs: Hotel California, Life in the Fast Lane
It’s easy to rip on the Eagles, especially with so many soft rock classics to choose from like Victims of Love and Pretty Maids. But I don’t think that there’s any boomer or Gen-Xer who didn’t grow up with Hotel California voluntarily playing on their radios at some point. Even now the guitar work, the production, and even the story makes that song in his to classic. The entire album is so well constructed, the lyrical mastery and production quality is so good, I understand why it’s on this list despite the fact I wouldn’t say I’m a huge Eagles fan. Life in the Fast Lane is an upbeat, fast tempo jam from a band not known for upbeat or fast tempo. New Kid in Town also was part of the new narrative bringing in Joe Walsh as a key writer and instrumentalist. I think I only need two Eagles albums: Hotel California and their best of. I need to be honest with myself: If I find this one on vinyl for a good prize, it’s probably coming home.
Liked this more than I expected tbh. And title track makes it even better ofc.
very much “classic rock.” like probably exactly what one would expect an album of that genre to sound like. i liked it well enough but it didn’t really captivate me past the first three songs. 3/5
Overrated. Boring
Not bad, but not great.
I could absolutely listen to this album from track 4 onwards. The complexities of the mysterious lyrics to Hotel California have been pondered over by hundreds of people and it has been played to death. So even just skip on 1 or 2 tracks amd you omw to a pretty good album. It moves from rock ballad to strip club rock. And that's just from Wasted time to Victim of love. It filled my mind with images of warm summer evenings and carefree days. I enjoyed this album, but will probably bring it back out to play in summer. A wintery January day did not do it justice. An overrated album by an overrated band. But Joe Walsh is so fucking awesome.
Against my will, this album made me feel things
It’s solid like 4-6/10 but leaning towards the lower end heavily Blues and soft rock kinda vibes Very 70s It’s like pretty good but not like id buy this on cd or vinyl because its not something I’d really crave and care for that much
Great songs. I love the story of this album and it's the point where they really took off. Can I like an album because the production sound sounds so good?
not sure what new I could say about this. Impeccably executed. Hotel California deserves both the celebration and derision it receives. I'm happy enough with the singles.
Hotel California has to one of the greatest songs of all time. Closely followed by Life in the Fast Lane it was a strong start to the album. From thereon the album offered a mix of rock and roll riffs and ballads but I felt it was lacking some more memorable songs.
Despite a powerful start, Hotel California suffers from a noticeable dip in energy, resulting in an underwhelming overall listen.
-I've only heard hotel California through the unreleased version by frank ocean lol -I feel like a white uncle would put this album on while driving by the ocean
Ah the Eagles, very talented band, but absolutely nuts as people. The reason you had a hard time listening to this entire album, Don Henley. It seems he doesn't want his singing parts on streaming. Mostly anyway, because you still have other songs he sings available. Also the band themselves seems to hate each other at any given time and may or may not hate themselves right now! Weird dudes. As for this album, it's 100% classic dad rock. It not bad, most songs are fine, some are insanely well known. You can see the weird fight Glenn and Don had when listening to this album. Notice how some songs just sound different? That's because either Don or Glenn did it and they fought over what everything should sound like. Instead of agreeing the songs sound almost like a different band. Yeah, weird dudes. All and all there are worse albums on this and historically speaking as they deserve to be on the list, even if it's a weird slightly disjointed album that is boring in parts. I'm looking at you New Kid in Town.
I enjoyed this a little less than I thought I would. The hits were great, but the other songs just didn't have enough going on for me to love them. I like the eagles alot for their hits, but this album disappointed just a little.
The title track is one of the best classic rock songs ever. Deep, emotional, and involving. The rest of the album doesn't really hold to the comparison. Afterall, it was enjoyable.
A couple of classics but otherwise meh
People love to hate on the Eagles because of that stupid quote from The Big Lebowski and because of coked-out bad relationships between the band members. The truth is that they made a lot of good songs that appealed to radio listeners and radio station owners and radio advertisers, so those songs got played a lot. Some songs are better than others, some seem formulaic. Joe Walsh and Don Felder are great guitarists and the Hotel California guitar duet/solo is iconic. Vocal harmonies are lovely. It could be argued that one of their other albums is a better selection for this list, but most people have heard their big hits from the compilation discs. All of the hits are pretty well spread out between all the albums, so unless you're a big fan of the band or enjoy the more chill country-flavored sounds of the non-single album tracks, the greatest hits discs are better for anyone else. Because most of their songs have been over-exposed and over-cloned, now it just sounds dated, boring, and lame to some listeners. Title track = epic 5*, one or two more are 4, the rest of the songs are either 3, averages out to 3.5 I guess.
good classic but not really my type of music i guess. 6/10
Didn’t make it through
The vitriolic hatred some have toward this album is really strange to me. The title track is simply one of the greatest songs ever written. Who doesn't know that song? Its influence and appeal being as widespread as it is contrasts its odd B minor key, its extended dual guitar solo, and the inscrutable, oft-discussed lyrics. It's on the "Hey Jude" tier for me- a pure pop song that will remain timeless, deserves so much praise, and carries with it an intangible quality of what Jack Black might call a "rocket sauce" song. The other songs on Side 1 are all at the very least pleasant and, at their best, are great songs in their own right. "New Kid in Town" is a pretty Glenn Frey countrypolitan ballad reminiscent of Gram Parsons featuring some actually resonant lyrics. "Life in the Fast Lane" was another huge hit, very much Joe Walsh's big track here with its riff-driven melody. Side 2, on the other hand, peaks early with the hard-edged "Victim of Love" and leans into a sappy AOR sound that unfortunately drags the album down a peg from being great to just good overall.
Craig: fine Courtney: nostalgic, music that was played a lot during my childhood.
I am neither an avid Eagles enjoyer or outright naysayer. Their soft sound creates a nice backdrop for the mundane. The basic chord structures and use of standard instruments create an oddly soothing soundscape. In the end though, the overall album experience doesn’t satisfy. This is all simply due to the fact that they are boring.
Their fifth album. Rock. The title song, for good or ill, is an all time classic. Everyone knows that track. The album overall is musically proficient, there are silky smooth harmonies and sweet noodly little guitar solos throughout. In some ways there's absolutely nothing wrong with this album, which is also what is wrong with it and the album is a prime example of why, by 1976, we needed Punk.
When I unveiled today's album (ta da!) my initial thought was, "Yes! I love the Eagles. This is an easy 5 stars." Turns out I love the Eagles' Greatest Hits and not whatever the fuck was after Track 3 on this album.
As expected.
Honestly enjoyed more than I thought. My Dad loved the Eagles and classic rock in general and I was constantly quizzed on it as a kid, hah! Since then I've always sort of avoided the Eagles but I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Will I add it to my regular listening rotation? No. Do I appreciate it a bit more now? Yes.
I’ve never been a huge fan. Appreciate the hits but don’t care much for the rest.
This is very easy listening, road trip across Route 66 type music. Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane are the standout tracks, with some good riffs. Most of the other songs are, again, easy on the ear and ‘nice’, but lack any real depth or complexity. 5/10.
i really love try and love again !
Some bangers and some boring stuff
Good album. Heard this on rotation a lot as a kid going to see my nana.
Repeat listen
A couple of absolute classics. But overall pretty forgetable
A disappointment, opens with Hotel California and doesn’t get close to that besides life in the fast lane
Besides the hits Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane, not very engaging beyond that.
Eh. Eagles. Yeah. Junior high slow dances. Perpetual high rotation on every radio station. It's fine I suppose...
3/5 Actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this.i will definitely give this another listen in the future
classic album and great guitar tones that shaped many modern music today
Not 100% for me, but generally enjoyable
Funny
This album reminds me of my dad as he would play this on vinyl all the time growing up. The first three songs are immense but after that it just becomes dad rock
I found this hotel on Groupon. It was comfy and clean, not that memorable, and the concierge Don was a bit of an asshole.
- GREAT MELODY - NICE LYRICS - NOT EXACTLY MY CUP OF TEA (A BIT TOO HIPPY) - ALL SOUNDED A BIT THE SAME (JOYFUL) - GOOD FOR READING BOOKS THAT ARE HAPPY
Not my style but some songs were decent
7/10 nice album, good for calm chill times
Well made. But I really only like the title song. The rest seems uninteresting, sometimes cheesy. Not for me. 3/5
As far as Dad Rock, the Eagles take the cake. This album was a lot softer than I expected it to be. It sold 16 million albums so you can't objectively say it's shit. I respect it. I respect how punk wanted to dismantle it. I still probably wouldn't buy the album.
Really enjoy half the album, but the other half is quite wishy-washy and doesn’t do a lot for me but there’s still a few certified bangers in here
Earlier Eagles albums better. HC lacks the edge of On the Border, the freshness of the Eagles, and the heart of Desparado
Best song: Hotel California Nice find: Try and Love Again Worst song: The Last Resort
Undeniably important American rock album. Perfect production, stellar musicianship, and beautiful harmonies. However, this can also be found on my personal list of albums I never need to hear again. Yawn.
Not what expected; deeper cuts and more heartfelt than hotel California but nothing revolutionary. Best song-hotel california 6/10
My father might disown me for this, but it's just a bit boring.
Hotel California - great. Then the album sort of descends into slow bore. I’m only halfway through though. Why such a short album?
Banger song, alright album. Not a big eagles fan
welcome 2 the hotel ... california ...
Meh. Aside from my favorite tracks (Life in the Fast Lane, Hotel California and Victim of Love), this album felt mediocre. It was slow for my taste, which made it uninteresting. I don't think I will be revisiting this any time soon.
You Can Never Leave 1001 Albums Generator 193 (12/28/2025) The classic tunes here are amazing, but the softer songs (which make up a surprising portion of the album) all come off as a bit saccharine and/or boring. Overall, averages out to like a 3/5. Favs: Hotel California Life In The Fast Lane Victim of Love Least Fav: Pretty Maids All In A Row
Legendary start and strong finish
Groovy 7/10
No edge to it but the songs are very good.
Solid front half goes a bit weird in the back.
Classic dad rock
Hotel California is the one song that stands out. Rest is mediocre...
I'm not sure if I've ever fully understood the hatred or the undying love for Eagles. They have always sat in the middle for me, I don't hate their music, but it's not what I reach for. I think that they have the right idea, but the music is missing something that I can't describe. I think that the high quality production almost has them lose that edge and messiness that I prefer when it comes to subgenres of rock. This also means that the length of their songs pulls people away because they don't have anything interesting enough to keep my attention for so long.
Opens with the most classic Eagles song, the title track. I have never listened to this album in its entirety before, but I recognized a few songs. My initial thought was oh ho hum another 70s rock band, but I enjoyed how some of the songs came together.
a few bangers, but a lot of average stuff 3/5
Enjoyed more than I expected, I used to despise a certain song on this record - it’s like an earworm I can’t get it out of my head.
diré que es mitiquísimo pero después de hotel california me suenan todas iguaaaaal fhdsjkahfl
The title song is clearly a masterpiece, but I wish I could say the same about the rest - and I haven't even finished listening to this, but don't have very high expectations, probably 3 stars just like I gave to their debut.
Not bad but not my style
I was looking forward to Hotel California. That song was a big hit back in my day. I found the next song on the album disappointingly boring. After that, it was great again, only to fade away afterwards. Overall, there were too many downs compared to the few ups. I should remember the ups, but not the album as a whole. 3/5
Classic; nice to hear more than just Hotel California
As mediocre as this album is, it's beautifully recorded. The title track does a lot of the heavy lifting though - nothing else made much impact on me.
hotel California great song but no other big standouts for me
Obvious worldie to start. Quite like Life in the fast lane's blues rocky feel. Also dig Victim of Love.
Title track is classic. Sounds pretty polished and smooth. Good production for the 70s. I know some of these other songs from my dad playing them when I was younger, but it's not really my thing. Quite cheesy and easy listening.
insgesamt gut; lieblingslieder sind Hotel California & Victim of Love 🎖️ Manche Lieder waren aber auch etwas zu langsam und bisschen schmalzig auch, hat mir aber allem in allem eigentlich gefallen
Classic rock, didn't find it too exciting with some exceptions. "Life in the Fast Lane" was a surprise, the rest is too bland for my taste.
It just starts too well No clear direction Some forgettable tracks Great instrumentals and vocals
Solid
Показалось как-то тяжеловесно и нудно и старомодно в плохом смысле. Но может настроения не было.
this is not for me. It just doesn't click for me
Not my style 100% but a pleasant experience for a late Sunday afternoon. First half of the album was very engaging and fun to listen to, the second was more melancholic in a way but not bad. Stand out tracks for me on 1st listen: Life in the first Lane, Wasted Time and Victim of Love
Classic
Some huge singles but the album is so melodramatic and boring
Not an Eagles fan, but I can't deny why the album is so popular; a lot comes together in a very good way. That said, my toddler took my phone, turned off the album and walked away, which is about how I feel about it.
'He said, "we haven't had / That spirit here since 1969."' I want to hate the title-track, and in many ways I do, but it has a few things going for it, the guitar solo notwithstanding (I know it's celebrated, but it's soft rock trying hard to be hard). At the very least, it's a peculiar if pretentious success, a song that's enjoyably inexplicable. I want to hate the rest of the tracks, and in many ways I do, but they're not the worst I've heard, despite the milage of faux soul the band covers. The record is essentially a deficient version of Clapton's inconsistent solo work, w/ the subtle reggae nods and all. It does boast a particularly bad song, the arid and brainless 'Victim of Love': 'A room full of noise and dangerous boys / Still makes you thirsty and hot.'
One song and then a totally separate album. Classic guitars, I think I like the live version better
Good. Hotel California is definitely my favorite track. The rest is good just not something i’d listen to regularly. 5.5/10
It’s a solid album and a must listen if you wanna get into older music but I personally didn’t like how long some of the songs were
The Kings of Dad Rock. Gonna be honest I've gone from tolerating to hating t loving the Eagles over the last several years. But this album leaves a lot to be desired. The title track is killer imo. But outside of that it's really just Victim of Love that sticks out. The rest is largely filler.
Hit or miss. Hotel California is great but ehh. I don't get the hype.
Definitely remember the title track, heard that. Then, despite being a reasonable length album, it all passed me by and it was over before I realised. Felt like this was as professionally middle of the road rock as it's possible to make. It was acceptable, I clearly wasn't bored or annoyed but it was never exciting or particularly interesting. I imagine they cracked this acceptable radio friendly sound earlier than most and so probably hold some responsibility from some following crap bands. This is the epitome of 2.5 if not for the first song which pushes it to a whole 3.
Highly overrated dad music. Three good songs on here and the rest are trash.
There's a couple of songs on here I really hate but the rest are pretty good so they average out.
Hits, but feels a little empty/soulless.
Må få ganske mye pluss for å ha en av de beste låtene noensinne laget. Men etter det blir jeg veldig forvirret av albumet, hørtes liksom ut som forskjellige band har laget hver låt. Misliker det ikke, men savner litt mer "album" følelse
3.5
It was good, not my favorite of the eagles though.
A few good tracks. The title track, life in the fast lane, new kid in town, and victim of love. The rest of the album just feels kind of meh.
A perfectly listenable album that was boosted by the weather and traffic of my drive into work
Standard inoffensive rock music from the seventies. A bit too dull for me, but has strong highlights. 6/10
Back when I was about 13 or 14 years of age, I was going to guitar lessons with a teacher named Mike Arrigan. I wanted to learn some Graham Coxon distortion noises from the album Blur, and Mike was not impressed by the dissonant sounds of Graham's guitar when isolated from the rest of the music. Instead, he started telling my about the song "Hotel California" by the Eagles. He'd do that. Sometimes, he'd go off on a long tangent about classic rock, rather than what you came to learn how to play that day. You might have left just as clueless about how to play that Radiohead or Blur guitar riff, but you'd have learned about some of the classic guitar moments from someone who felt it was their duty to pass it on. I'll never forget Mike going off on one about the solo, how the two guitars take turns playing against each other, before coming together at the end to play in harmony. And how most radio stations fade it out before the best part at the end. The Eagles always conjur up images in my head of a bank manager speeding along in his Audi A6, flashing his lights agressively at a Vauxhall Corsa that is doing 5 under the speed limit, listening to "Life in the Fast Lane", and probably queuing up "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits next in his car stereo system. Not my type of music. But, as bland as some of the music they come out with is, there are moments of absolute brilliance, and that brings me back to the song "Hotel California" itself. My guitar teacher called it the greatest guitar solo in all of music. I don't know if I'd go that far, but thanks to Mike Arrigan, whenever it comes on, I always stop to listen to that solo properly, and make sure it doesn't fade out before the best part at the end.
Solid nothing special title track is great the rest is a bit forgettable
First song was easily the best on the album, but it was solid throughout. Nothing mind blowing but a good listen
The song Hotel California is good, albeit overplayed, and I think Life in the Fast Lane is kinda fun, but besides that I cannot stand The Eagles. They just write really boring songs. This album is a lot better than their other album on this list, but I am still not crazy about them. Low 3.
The album’s namesake is iconic if a bit melodically repetitious. However the rest of the album isn’t nearly as strong
definitely a quality album. I see the appeal and eagles has a chill, strong sound, but I cannot see myself relistening to it much at all
when the eagles are good they are unbelievable. when they are bad they are also unbelievable lol
"Hotel California" and ""Life in the Fast Lane" are the only tracks I've ever really enjoyed off this album before and it wasn't much different this time, even though I forced myself to be patient and really give the back half of the album a fair shake. I am so happy that the band departed from the hard core Country Rock sound after Bernie Leadon left. This time around while I did not enjoy the ballad "Wasted Time", I actually enjoyed the string arrangements of "Wasted Time (Reprise)". In all honesty, I prefer the solo projects, particularly with regards to Don Henley, although Glenn Frey had some classics over the 80s as well; over the output of The Eagles.
Strangely enough I still quite like the title track despite having heard it probably about a million times. The rest is okay, I guess. Very polite and polished countryrock. Country-ish rock. I just wrote my review of George Harrison's All Things Must Pass where I noted how much different that sounded than the early Beatles stuff, just 6 or 7 years later. Hotel California is 6 years later again and, well, doesn't sound that much different from ATMP. A bit shinier but it's got a similar vibe. I guess we were just treading water and waiting for punk rock to be invented...
This album strangely went by quickly. It has its fair share of smash hits but none of the other tracks really caught my attention. Their is an interesting mix between high and low energy ballads. Standout Tracks: Hotel California, Pretty Maids All in a Row, Victim of Love "I hate the Eagles man!"
It’s got all the Eagles’ hits which makes me wonder if there are other Eagles’ hits that are not on this album if they are all on this album does that make them a one album wonder? 6/10
Hotel California y unos cuantos temas más. Un par de ellos graciosos, pero es soft rock genérico. Vibes pero no me liaría. Pero tampoco está nada mal.
I am copying someone else's review because this is exactly how I felt when I saw the album for today because I am not an Eagle fan. -- I don't think I've ever been more disappointed when seeing a new album pop up. How can a 43 minute album feel this long?
2.9 1x in Heathrow
"Big Lebowski quote because no one has thought of that before." Look, it's just fine, ok? It's a polished piece of country rock with a few standout moments and a pretty cohesive atmosphere. The Eagles are ok so long as you are looking for a certain vibe, but if anyone tells you they are their favourite band, you should back away slowly while maintaining eye contact. Don't expect to find anything truly interesting here. Props to Joe Walsh for his excellent lead work, he is obviously the best Eagle. The good tracks on this album are good, but so terribly over played it is hard to appreciate them properly any more.
Kinda boring at the back
Great singles but sounds like 70s drug burnout on wax.
The Eagles are an interesting band to me because when I listen to them I oscillate between enjoyment and dissatisfaction, and it seems to happen every other track.
Think Eagles Greatest Hits album is among the most sold albums ever. Or at least it used to be. I was always a bit baffled by that, and after stumbling across some albums on this list, I still am. 'Hotel California' is a good song, no doubt. And I was impressed with the following two tracks after that as well. But what more is there? To me, Eagles is a group you might introduce to someone saying "I want to hear some rock for the first time, but please go easy on me and don't give me anything crazy". That's what this whole album feels like. Extremely kosher and just "ordinary", despite what some sale charts might say. Not a shabby album with more decent tunes than I anticipated, but definitely not anything out of the ordinary in my book.
There is “Hotel California” and then there is the rest of Hotel California the album. None of the other songs can shake of the feeling of that this is the most inoffensive dad rock album ever. Everything is fine, they are technically good, but there is never anything risque, never does my face look like I’ve taken a bite out of a lemon. “Hotel California” is a good track and “Life in the fast lane” is decent. The rest was meh. 3 star
Soft 70's dad rock. You know what it is.
Title track is this album's savior. Not memorable, but not offensive-- one of the more boring albums from this generation.
Easy listening, can't complain about this guy even if I don't really love the Eagles
First listen. - title track is great ofc, heard it many times - really good 3 track opener - good sense of melody, catchy riffs etc. - I must have a thing for interludes; I actually liked the reprise a lot more than the song preceding it lol - I like that the album varies slower tracks with more uptempo ones, although it does become a bit formulaic after a while - sonic variety isn't a problem, but I do feel that the overall sound is just a bit too basic, and while the songwriting is solid, it's not quite good enough to fully overcome this imo - oh yeah, I've actually heard The Last Resort before, too. I think my dad played it on vinyl a bunch when I was growing up. it's great! almost as good as the opener, tbh. I went more with off-the-cuff observations that actually resemble... notes, this time. I don't know. Overall, Hotel California was quite enjoyable. It's great for what it is, but I'm not sure that I'm super into this kind of 70s soft-rock. Outside of the title track, that sweet little reprise in the middle, and the closer, it was just fine. Might be a grower, I don't know. I hope I don't end up giving every album under the sun a 3, though. Give me a real dud tomorrow! Fav. Track: Hotel California (duh) Reaction: 🙂
I like the two hit songs on this one, but the rest is kind of bland. Their greatest hits album is really good. This is a 3.
Never was much of an Eagles fan, but I have a lot of respect for these guys' musicianship and creativity. Cool harmonies also. Hotel California is a great song.
I knew I’d have to listen to this at some point and here we are. The Eagles are very boring, but I guess that appeals to a lot of people. I was impressed by the bass/percussion on “Hotel California”, I feel like I’ve only ever listens to the guitar/vocals and missed a redeeming quality of the song. “Life In The Fast Lane” is the anthem for office workers who need to feel like their life is still exciting. "Try and Love Again" is also fine. Beyond that, idk, I fell asleep (honestly).
The first three tracks are excellent including an absolute classic. The rest of the album I can take or leave, very boring. It almost feels like two different bands. (There were enough members in the band perhaps it was) If the Album was only three tracks long it would have scored 5 Stars.
5 Thought it was gr8 for a while but then interest dropped off and wasn’t enjoying at all by the end lol
Some classics. Overall good but most songs sound too similar and don’t stand out. 3.5
My mom hates and I mean HATES Hotel California (the song) so growing up she would change the radio station every time. I need to know the hidden lore there so bad. Idk though not bad
For those of us over 50 we have heard these songs dozens of times. Cheesy as hell and the purest definition of ' easy listening ' but to the uninitiated worth a listen .
Hotel California is definitely the standout on this but the rest of the album is ok
Есть несколько мощнейших хитов, но местами довольно скучновато.
3.6/5 it’s got that song and the other song not even their best eagles
Many of these songs feel over played but that is for good reason.
Pleasantly surprised. 3.5
Not as bad as I was expecting
Classic
Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane are good enough hits to carry the album further than it should. But the fact that I have heard Hotel California so many times on radio, in a bar, on a boat, anywhere(!) has made it one of my most hated songs.
It was fine. I heard most of these songs before on Classic Rock stations over the years. I did like the overall theme of the album about how California has changed from the 1960s to 1976.
Great singles. The rest lost me a little bit. I sometimes think I want a solid record that has no dischordant stuff, no unexpected jarring rhythms, nothing too unexpected. I usually struggle to figure out what that solid super straight laced record is.. This might be it and it turns out it's not a good thing. It's just not that interesting to me.
Solid Eagles album. I love “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane”, but can take or leave the rest
2 sterne
High highs and low lows.
Great album with great sounds
Best Track - "Life In The Fast Lane"
I bought this album when it first came out due to the reviews. I only play the first side of the album due to the first three songs and the ingenious addition of Joe Walsh who helped make the Eagles rise above their traditional, sleepy, southern rock. Life in the fast lane and a new kid in town are my favorite eagle song. I’ve heard Hotel California so many times that I’m not sure if I like it or hate it, similar to stairway to Heaven. Whittle the album down to a three song EP and I’ll give it five stars.
3.5/5
too cheesy in places otherwise a solid listen
1. california - 4 2. Kid - 3 3. Fast - 2.5 4. Time - 1.5 5. Wasted - 0 6. Love - 1.5 7. Maids - 1.5 8. Again - 1.5 9. Resort -1.5
Classic. This typically wouldn’t be my flavor, but I enjoyed the album as a whole.
The sound of dudes being dudes. How they managed to ski their way through mountains of cocaine and make an album that is so utterly devoid of urgency (except Life in the Fast Lane) and barely manages to register a blip on the rock meter (except Life in the Fast Lane). Defend Try and Love Again... I dare you.
Highlight song and that’s all to me
This is fine. It opens well, although I have heard Hotel California (the song) so many times that I have to turn it off when I hear it. Wasted Time is a bit of a low point, but the rest is pretty laid back rock, a bit ballady at times but it’s fine. Definitely front loaded, but inoffensive enough. I personally prefer other Eagles albums, but they don’t have HC on them, which I rather think is the point of this album’s inclusion. The Eagles have influenced every alt country band since, so they probably do deserve a place on the list, I just don’t find this album to be particularly special.

Liked it, but mmm idk. There’s something i didnt like
It is an album clearly built around the title track. It passed by pleasantly enough in the background but the sound is generic, radio-friendly rock, which doesn’t do much for me.
Hotel California is a strong opener but I don’t think the rest of the album lives up to that promise and it becomes a lot more formulaic afterwards. I’m not all that averse to it but (possibly due to overplay on ‘classic rock’ radio stations) it does descend into dad rock territory fairly quickly and doesn’t pique the same interest.
They're quite good at making music for mass consumption. Less good at making music for interesting listening, though.
Better than I expected :)
Good album. The tital track is amazing as expected and all the other songs were decent enough.
Yeah it's a classic. Highlights being Try and Love Again and New Kids in Town. Don Henley is so recognisable it hurts
I liked some of this, some of it felt too poppy?
Hotel California - 8/10 New Kid In Town - 7/10 Life In The Fast Lane - 7/10 Wasted time - 7/10 Victim of love - 7/10 Pretty Maids All In A Row - 8/10 Try And love again - 8/10 The Last Resort - 7.5/10 74/100
Is this the AM radio in my parent's kitchen when I was growing up? No, it's just this Eagles album. I swear I knew every song before I ever heard the album. The Last Resort is an underratedly epic song.
I know there are Eagles haters out there, and I'm not going to die on that hill, but they could write a catchy song and, when they had a mind to, a good guitar riff.
Très générique, mais c'est les eagles lol Hotel California c'est un all time tho
Weird dernière chanson lol
war cool
Hotel california carries this album, life in the fast lane and New kid in town are classics, but then the last 6 tracks are all disposable.
Not my cup of tea u.u
Good: The guy "the Dude" from The Big Lebowski is based on was in town for a film festival and I got asked to take him out to a bar, where he did actually order White Russians and he dropped enough hints about who he was that people around us kept putting the Eagles on the jukebox to troll him into doing the "I fucking hate the Eagles" bit over and over. Indecisive: Eagles greatest hits is the only CD my dad ever bought. Not sure if he ever played it, or if he did, what in. Bad: Listen to the drums and rhythm guitar on "Hotel California" closely and realize in horror that they invented white reggae while inventing soft rock.
It's the Eagles. *shrug*. They're fine. They perfected 70s FM soft rock. 2 stars + 1 bonus star for finally leveraging Joe Walsh. But will I listen to this album ever again? No. Probably not.
It’s the Eagles. Love it. Love that 70s California Rock
Good rock, hotel california is iconic, everything else is pretty good
was just okay / bit too american
I came in wanting to be a hater, but I can't complain much.
Best dad rock
I remember when I listened to Hotel California a lot but not the album. I like the song and album too it is good more or less but nothing special in my opinion.
First time listening through this album. Made impressions were a clear lead vocal, simple clean instrumentation, with the very memorable hooks along with good storytelling throughout most of the songs. At times instrumentation felt thin, though I'm not used to listening to a lot of music from this period. Lots of songs saved for later listening, most notably wasted time, New kid in town, and lost resort. Favorite song was try and love again.
Hard to listen to with open ears after 50 years of overplay, but Hotel California is actually a pretty good tune. The album, though, is frequently lightweight in other places, almost unlistenably simplistic lyrically and musically.
It’s undeniably an influential album and Hotel California is a stunning track. A timeless classic. I quite enjoyed life in the fast lane and new kid in town. Most of these I remember from the first time around. I know as a child we had an Eagles album but I’m sure it was not this one. So they’ve kind of hanging around me a long time and I knew most of the songs but I wouldn’t say it was mind blowing. A cool listen.
People seem to have extreme reactions to the Eagles. I've never cared one way or the other. So much so that this was the first time I'd ever listened to this album (although it turns out I'd heard most of these songs before). The title track... I'm not even sure if I like it, but this time around, I absolutely gawked at its construction and their performances. That bassline! Those guitar solos! Even the damn drum fills were perfect. It's simply a marvel of a song, even though I can't say I exactly like it. The rest of the tunes can't hold a candle to that one. Life in the Fast Lane has always bored me. New Kid In Town is fine. The last track was fine, I guess, though I wasn't in a situation to give it as much attention as I wanted. I did like the Joe Walsh tune, but that makes sense. He's a cool cat. So yeah, I don't know. Right down the middle. I can't really understand why people love this band so much, nor can I understand why it's hip to hate on them. (For good measure, I read that "Case Against the Eagles" article that came out a few years ago. I guess they're assholes, and lots of their songs are about putting down women. By that criteria, we'd have to toss out 40% of all modern music.) I don't know. As far as I'm concerned, having extreme feelings about the Eagles only makes them seem more important than they are. They're fine. Next.
It was fine. Standouts were the title track and life in the fast lane. Album was rather repetitive with the basic pattern being more upbeat song followed by a slower song.
3.75. This was pretty good! I've only ever listend to the title track (an all time classic).
Liked hotel California, and the wasted time reprise, rest wasn’t bad just felt like easy listening. Can see myself coming back as a study album
Day 32 First listen- A good album! Some tracks were a bit boring however. (3.5/5)
Solid
So I'm going with a three. Too dull in places. I own the album, and listened to it quite a bit back in the day. Not sure why now, aside from 3-4 more obvious songs.
I don’t hate the Eagles as much I wished I do. I just can’t. There are some, well, not ‘bangers’, that’s too strong, but ‘agreeable head-nodders’ here. Most bands are full of assholes; the Eagles’ problem is they got too popular, so the assholes stank more.
Peaceful easy feelings abound.
The opener is, of course, awesome. Everything after sounds a bit dull in comparison. Not bad, it’s like a 3.5 stars. Unfortunately, I’ll be rounding down.
Good but it's going to be way overrated
One of my favorite things about this 1001 albums project is getting a legendary album I’ve never listened to that stands so clearly head & shoulders above the rest of this list. Like whoa, I see why this one blew the entire music industry away as well as the average listener!! This is not one of those albums. 🤣 Maybe I don’t “get” The Eagles or something, I don’t know. They feel like the blandest possible blend of country + rock, somehow *losing* the standout qualities of both genres. Other than the title track, the songs are boring and samey. Though I did think Last Resort was a pretty song.
Polished, easy to listen to rock, and you can see why this has mass appeal. It's a strong start going from the big title track and its ending solos, to the poignancy of New Kid in Town, and then the hard-driving riff and thudding bass on Life in the Fast Lane. Wasted Time is a bit of a limp ballad, but after the somewhat out of place string reprise, Victim of Love is a decent start to the second side. Slow but purposeful. Pretty Maids is another ballad, and it works better than Wasted Time did. The last two tracks are slow again and not unpleasant, but I'm looking for more variety, or just more bite. As it stands this is middle of the road stuff, sales figures be damned.
Hotel California is a 5-star song, but for the rest of the album I'm out riding fences.
I know its quality, but I don't like it.
three stars for three great songs and none for the rest
I enjoyed the non-ballads immensely but holy shit it’s HALF BALLADS. Would be excellent with 2 more rockers in lieu of the (well-made) slow jams. Yes I’m aware I’m talking about EAGLES.
"Hotel California" is the PEAK of dad rock and I will never get tired of it no matter how overplayed it is. Favorite track: Hotel California 3.5/5
Hotel California: classico. New kid in town: sonorità troppo country per i miei gusti Life in the fast lane: ora si ragiona. Bel riff, ritornello memorabile.
1-9/10 2-5/10 3-5/10 4-6/10 5-7/10 6-6/10 7-6/10 8-5/10 9-
Klassikko setti. Hyvänkuuloset rummut.
Listened to it on the car with my mom while coming back from my grandparents’
I wasn’t expecting much from this. Enjoyed the listen whilst reading the back stories to each song. Mexican Reggae through to environmental concerns and planet destruction.
point8.
Album was good but nothing holds a candle to the masterpiece title song. Fave song: You know which one Honorable Mentions: Wasted Time, Victim of Love
Legendary. As for the rest of the album, it was good but not great. If only every song was as great as the first. Favourite Song: Hotel California Honourable Mention: Life in the Fast Lane
enjoyed it. hotel california obv a classic but the rest of the album was also good
The Eagles have some lovers and some haters. You can't deny the power of the title track. There's other good stuff on that album too though. All in all, a solid listen.
sweet but meh. 3,5
Not for me.
It’s fine.
It gets 3 stars for Hotel California alone. The rest of the songs were easy to listen to as well.
Cover 8 Iconic album. A strong album. At least a good start. Dies a bit toward the end even though those are still good songs.
This one was not new to me, and relistening was mostly familiar. Sorry, Dude, I actually kinda like the Eagles.
The Eagles should find a church, get on their knees, and offer solemn thanks to God for sending them Joe Walsh. On the way there they may run into David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash arriving to give thanks for Neil Young.
Most of this is trash, but even I won’t deny the greatness of track one. All these points are for that song alone
Perhaps the most amazing part of this album is going from something as awesome as hotel California (even though I’ve heard it way too many times) to new kid in town which I thought was super lame. 3.5 and part of my wants to round up but my gut says it isn’t a 4 for me.
2.5
Had some stand outs but otherwise pretty easy listening tbh
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. I generally think hotel California is over played. But I listened to it with an open mind and quite enjoyed it.
I don’t like it
the last two songs stink and wasted time doesn’t need a reprise, but face it: everything else is tight, hooky, and cohesive. this is low hanging hater fruit. kneejerk hate. easy hate. yeah, i’ve heard these songs too many times too, and it ain’t my favorite either, even as a JOE WALSH GUY, but there are waaay worse albums on this list.
The best thing to come from the Eagles is Gypsy Kings flamenco HOTEL CALIFORNIA cover. Liam and me, we're gonna fuck. you. up. NEW KID IN TOWN is easy listening that is just too easy. So are the Eagles. I'm hoping it gets remotely weird. LIFE IN THE FAST LANE is a ZZ Top song for nerds. HOTEL CALIFORNIA + NEW KID IN TOWN = we are easy going driving around band LIFE IN THE FAST LANE = no no we also drive fast and have an edge WASTED TIME = jk we are sappy and sentimental. okay here's your ballad laaaayyydies! Laaaaaydies!!! some strings on the end for the ballad for the laaaaydies WASTED TIME (Reprise) = what the fuck why VICTIM OF LOVE = how about some rock n roll for the feellllllaaas. We're back fellas!!!
The opening three-track run is staggering, even for a blockbuster album like this: the title track is mythologizing and more than a bit self-serious (an Eagles trait), but it’s so immaculately arranged and performed that I get into it anyways whenever I hear it; “New Kid in Town” is bitter (another Eagles trait), breezy, and lovely; and “Life in the Fast Lane” just straight up slaps. The rest of it is alright. “Wasted Time” was not good enough to warrant the orchestral reprise. The closing track “The Last Resort” is this overwrought dirge about California (well, L.A.) as a colonized promised land, and that’s where the self-seriousness finally edges into being silly.
pretty enjoyable classic. Knew a handful of songs, found a few new additions, the rest just feel like filler songs in my life
downloaded 1,3,4,6 and 8. aside from hotel california, victim of love was my favourite from the project
As good as the one before it, it's fine and good background.
Nice. A little cheesy but nice
7/10 The song Hotel California is perfect but other than that there's nothing too standout here. It's not bad but it's fairly average.
Alright, fell asleep listening. But a classic ig
It was fine. Edit: I actually listened a bit more and really enjoyed what I heard.
True classic some great harmony
meh, other than Hotel California and this other one that had some nice strings in it, it's meh. A little to soft core for me. 3 stars.
Definitely defined by the three singles from it, the other songs weren’t anything to write home about, but they were at least unique to the three more popular songs on it
Classic album but the eagles still just don’t do it for me.
The title song is, of course, a banger, but I should relisten the rest of the album, not sure how much i like it
“I hate the fucking Eagles, Man” — Jeff Lebowski
Can't stream the full album on YouTube music or Spotify or Amazon Prime Music
I can appreciate the eagles and there was a time in my life where I enjoyed them but I don’t listen to them much these days. This album is solid and some great songwriting but a bit middle of the road for me.
God
I went into this album with curiousity as the only song I had heard before was the titular Hotel California which I received very well. Overall the album, was pretty much without fault in terms of the music however I was hoping for more songs that really hit. It happened once during Wasted Time, however afterwards the songs were mostly comfortable but nothing too special. I would listen to the album again but would likely find myself skipping more towards Hotel California and Wasted Time with the rest being more of a filler listen. This will receive a 3.5/5 and be bumped to a 3 as it did not quite hit the height of being able to bump it to a 4, which might have been different with one or two more "standout" songs.
Fun listen, but not sure it’s something I’d return to regularly.
Overplayed. Not my favs. But they were good at their time.
Love the title track, but all I've ever heard about this album is that besides that there are no other stand-outs. Let's see if that statement rings true. Haven't heard that first song in a while, but damn is it good. Great storytelling. Love singing along. I wasn't sure about this second track, but the quiet moment with the lines "You look in her eyes/ the music begins to play" has me sold. Lovely! Life in the Fast Lane is fun and fine but nothing that really moves me. Wasted Time is well made and all, but New Kid in Town explored the same mood in a better way. Victim of Love, while very simple, is a welcome change in mood. Like the guitar riffs throughout! The vocals in this next track remind me of Bowie. It's a nice enough song, I could see myself moving a lighter at a live concert to it. Despite being very similar to some past tracks, Try And Love Again actually hit a chord with me! The Last Resort is a great closing track and it seems to be in support of native americans and anti colonialism? Yeah, it's a great song. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this album. I was expecting one good opener followed by some boring 70's dad rock, but that was not the case! Good experience, and while the high of the first track was never again matched, there are still some gems here. Bye-bye
Very easy listening....solid 3
First song is good but overall pretty mid
This accommodation holds only solid (dad rock-) numbers. Simply noone can escape the all-time-megahit "Hotel California" and the two other rock standards "New Kid In Town" and "Life In The Fast Lane". But the B-side can't hold this level. And of course it must be said: "I hate the fucking Eagles" ;) Not easy for me to decide between three and four stars. 3,5
Decadent rock and roll with a country music echo, a different take on all things America and the disaffected masses!
Not as bad as I thought it would be. There are some nice melodies here, but maybe a little too soft all the way through
Ok. It is Hotel California.
The title track pulls the album up from a two, just too Easy Listening for me
I think the first three tracks are the high water mark and HC itself is undeniably a classic, but then this gets more and more overindulgent for my liking. The quality of the music is great but it all feels middle of the road, which is what they were clearly aiming for!
I thought I knew this album and had extremely high expectations. I am a little sad as it turns out my view of Eagles is built based on their "A" game titles. Hotel California is a great. Nothing wrong with the album its good but many songs are just bland. Not in a shit bland kind of way. Like a VW they are extremly solid and reliable and often arguably the best choice but sensible doesnt always mean best. VW can make some amazing sports / luxury cars but at their core they are a sensible mans car. I am going to go get into my VW group car and cry now.
What an album of two halves. Kicking off with one of the best tracks ever recorded, the first few songs assure you are in for a banger of an album. Unfortunately the album falls off into some generic slow county rock, finishing with an unenjoyable dirge. The balance on this as an album is too much towards the the uninspiring which is a shame given it includes such an iconic and culturally significant track.
I really wanted to hate this - the eagles represent so much I hate in self-satisfied, bloodless soft rock...but, it's pretty good? There's a reason the title track is a classic, and New Kid and Life in the Fast Lane are also pretty great driving rock songs. It tails off a little towards the end, and I can't morally give it a 4, but definitely a high 3.
Title track aside, it’s mid tier yacht rock.
Is this really in the running for greatest album? It has one good side and then just duds except Victim for Love. Nah. It's just a fine album.
1. Hotel California is amazing of course. May be the only song I have heard on this album. 2. New Kid in Town - Don't love this one. When guitar gets going I really like the guitar part and the chorus is okay. Don't love the verse structure. 3. Life in the FastLane - Oh of course I have heard this one also. Great song. Best guitar licks on the album. 4. Wasted Time - This one is pretty great too. Almost like a good love ballad. Interesting classical bit at the end of it. I'm not mad at it. 5. I missed the title of the last song. Victim of love maybe? It was fine, forgettable. 6. Pretty Maids All in a Row - Don't love it. Not sure it fits well with the album. Too slow and mellow. It was fine. 7. Try and Love Again - I miss the amazing guitars from earlier in the album. Where did that go? This one is ok. Pretty forgettable though. I feel like you would love this one if you are a Mega Eagles fan but that's it. Oh there is some guitar but not close to earlier in the album, not as good. 8. The Last Resort - I think at this point I'm ready for the album to be over. Great songs at the beginning but the beginning but I haven't loved anything since track 4. Album was fine. Just feel like the band wasn't consistent. If I didn't know who the Eagles were I would have thought this was an album with a few different bands on it.
Other than the hits on the album, felt a little underwhelmed.
Scrapes a 3 as I lost interest at points despite how good it is.
Good, known and expected. 3/5
It’s not a bad album but I understand why people are like warm on the Eagles
Forstår The Dude enda bedre nå.
Never been much of a fan of this album, but it has been some time since I've listened to it... I reluctantly listened to it again today... I'm still right, this album doesn't resonate with me. Its ok, but in my mind, its over hyped.
Who knew the eagles were so divisive?! Not me. A bit drab in the middle but overall it was an enjoyable album
Better than Coldplay.
Decent 70s rock album
Ah, the Eagles. I was a big fan back when I was a kid. Been a long time since I’ve listened to this one, so it was interesting to revisit. I’d say “Life in the Fast Lane” still holds up, as does the classic title track, though I’ve heard that one so many times I don’t really need to hear it again. Everything else on the album is a bit too mainstream 70s yacht rock for my current taste. Well written and immaculately produced, but not what I’d listen to today.
Yeah, it's all right.
I kind of hate the song Hotel California, but these guys know what they want to do and they're good at it. 3.5
So, it starts off strongly and I was pleasantly surprised but it is all downhill from there as it descends into boring MOR ballads. Someone once ghosted me with the parting line ‘we are all prisoners here of our own device. Thanks Micah, I hope you are doing well. 2.5. Swithering over which way to round…
high 3. Similar but all super listenable.
It's a good album, it has good classics, like Hotel California itself, but I had the feeling that at the end of the album I was very tired, as if I was listening to the same song.
The only worthwhile song on this album is Hotel California. The rest are terrible. Since the song after which the album is named would easily be 5 stars by itself, that bumps its rating up. If the entire album was just that one song I would be way happier.
*Insert Big Lebowski quote here* 6/10
Enjoyed. Would buy on vinyl if found second hand
Ive never been a big Eagles fan. This album definitely has some hits (understatement) and strong moments. It also has a lot of sentimentality that doesnt really gel with me. Overall- good album
Fine. Better than I thought, but boring.
Enjoyable but basic radio rock music
I suppose I understand the hype, good vibes, American Wedding still better honestly
Beginning and end of this album were solid. Maybe I lost interest part of the way through and picked back up towards the end, but the first three tracks (Hotel California, New Kid in Town, and Life in the Fast Lane) felt solid, and the final two (Try and Love Again, The Last Resort) felt similarly. Of songs I have not heard before, my favorite was probably The Last Resort.
very nostalgic for me, reminded me of riding in my dads mercedes when i was little
Some great songs
I wish I could unhear all of the times I had ever listened to "Hotel California" to listen to it for the first time now. When you've heard a song a million times throughout your whole life, it's easy to not really appreciate all of the little intricate details that go into it, and there are many of these in its six and a half minute run time. I tried to listen to it as if I never had before and I reached the conclusion this song is something of a masterpiece that I never really appreciated before. That being said, I think it was a mistake to open this album with the title track. After "Hotel California", the remaining tracks on the album just seem kinda... unremarkable. Flat. Phoned in. "Life in the Fast Lane" is alright, and "Wasted Time" I like, but basically none of side 2 stands out to me. Maybe I would've liked the album better if it started with the other songs and finished with a stroke of genius rather than starting at its best and going downhill from there.
Eagles are alright sorta boring at times to me. Hotel California feels so separate from everything else but it’s not bad background music though I have a visceral hatred for life in the fast lane for some reason and maybe that’s biasing me towards the whole thing
