Reviews (page 2 of 8)
This album is spicy, RIP
An astounding cohesive pop music statement from an artist who grew by leaps and bounds. Also, "Father Figure" is absolutely baby making music.
Alltså... sååå bra!!!! Jag hade inte vett nog att uppskatta den mer när den kom (alldeles för ung). De fyra första låtarna - alla klassiker. One More Try... Helt fantastisk. Väldigt bra och jag tycker att George Michael hade en av världens bästa röster.
wow!!! this was such a great way to start the day. so good to dance to
This is #day552 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to the epitome of late '80s pop. As someone born in 1990, my George Michael has always been the '04 version, with "Amazing" and "Flawless (Go to the City)" on heavy TV rotation. There's something about him that resonates with me, and it's not just the Christmas season, although I can't deny that it plays a part. Faith is a funk/soul/jazz/pop perfection, an incredibly enjoyable record, especially on vinyl. "Kissing A Fool" couldn't have been a more perfect end to a hard day at work. This is a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #day553.
I never appreciated the artistry of George Michael until much later in my life. He was magnificent.
timeless album, one of my all-time favourites
There is nothing bad to say. George’s Faith will always be perfect to me.
❤️
Such a good album
ive always liked the the title track but just kind of tolerated father figure. though i was excited to see this pop up, mostly as a reprieve from the more recent albums, i wasnt expecting much. ultimately i was surprised how much i enjoyed this album. sure it sounds dated and its very sleazy but its got a certain charm that i cant put my finger on.
At a time when he was confiding with his own sexuality with a world that was continuing to ostracise queer people, the raw sex appeal of this album continues to breathe well. Personally, I have always loved Wham! (the tie to Freedom in the first 30 seconds of Faith is something special), But the real influences of R&B and soul music in this album are something special. Tying social commentary, sex appeal, and timeless pop songs so well is a testament to his craftsmanship. You will always be in our (and my) hearts, George Michael.
Almost flawless pop.
Da hat der Umstand, dass ich beim Hören gerade durch Hamburg spazierte, ne Menge zur guten Stimmung beigetragen.
Good music
I haven’t heard George Michael in a minute. I must say it sounded great!
I will not include the CD bonus tracks in this review. This will be the fourth album from my aunt's CD collection, and it's another big one. I'm familiar with George Michael, who established himself as one-half of the English pop duo Wham! before dissolving that group to pursue a solo career. If anything, he wanted to be taken more seriously, aiming to achieve the same level of success that Prince and Michael Jackson had seen in the mid-1980s. Was he able to accomplish this feat with his debut, Faith? The answer would be a resounding yes. George still had a powerful vibrato delivery, and putting his voice over a then-contemporary pop-R&B record was a smart choice. The opening run of singles proved to be effective compositional works, from the jaunty title track to the gripping soul ballad of "One More Try". From there, the second half opens up with the bouncy electro-funk of "Hard Try" to the sophisti-pop whisper of "Hand to Mouth" with a rather glistening piano line as George provided some pretty remarkable social commentary for the time. That's the surprising find with this record, where, for as much as the lyrical content mostly involved the ins-and-outs of relationships, there were a few tracks that explore more varied subject matter, including the friend with a drug addiction on "Monkey", and even allusions to George's own homosexuality on "Kissing a Fool" and "Father Figure". Given he would open up about his sexuality over a decade later, it's amazing in hindsight how he got away with these lyrics early on. Sonically, this album is amazing throughout, as George performed double-duty with the production and most of the keyboard work, giving the necessary sheen and flair to go toe-to-toe with what Prince had done. The rest of the session personnel did a superb job matching George's swaggerous energy across these tracks, all the way up to the lovely jazz piece "Kissing a Fool" to close out the record with class. Honestly, I did not have any complaints with Faith, as the sort of record that launched George Michael into the stratosphere, farther than he'd gone up to this point.
> The Beatles
are you freaking kidding me lol

What a great album.
I listened to GMs work the day after he died, all day long. It was nice to hear this album as it was meant to be listened to.
A great album. I think that George Michael is underrated in the US, and his output is generally pretty outstanding. From the WHAM! days to his solo work, it is a shame that George Michael is not as well remembered over here. I think this album is very good. If half stars were possible I would probably give a 4.5, but since they are not, its a 5 star album for me. Faith - Father Figure - I Want Your Sex is a new contender for any 3 song run on an album.
You’d be hard pressed to find a solo album debut that was better than this one. Singles (that started in the fall of 87 and essentially ran the entirety of 1988) like “I Want Your Sex”, Faith", "Father Figure", "One More Try", and "Monkey" helped make this album an absolute monster. And set-up George Michael as a global icon.
LOVE this, pure excellence, fuck yeah, George Michael!!
Outstanding album
If you're my age, and British, and had a pretty normal journey through the 1980's then you could pretty much sing every track on this album. Easily one of the best albums of the 1980's, and probably of the last 50 years.
I never actually listened to this album front to back until it came up on this list. But I knew almost every song I guess that’s how many singles there were. This was on. Repeat for a week straight.
Classic. That white man alright with me.
There are two arguments this album allows you to make 1) That George Michael was the greatest pop singer of all time 2) That George Michael was the most handsome man to ever walk the earth
Been a long time since I’ve listened to this album all the way through. Really enjoyable 80’s pop, and full of absolute bangers. 4.5 / 5
The man knows what he's about.
Не ожидал, что мне понравится, но мне прям понраааавилось!!! I want your sex прям попала в меня! Отличная песня!!! Вокал Джорджа Майкла шикарен, а инструменты звучат просто блестяще!!!
Made me smile from start to finish. Kicks off with possibly the strongest three tracks of any album on this list. Crazy influential record for the kind of music I like. Also, lest we forget, dude was not out yet! He made this crazy, sexy, bold album just because the music moved him. Worth a 5 if only for the "HUHHH!" he does during I Want Your Sex. Man, George Michael was good!
Looking back on this album in 2025 and having watched the Wham! documentary on Netflix, it's incredibly sad to think how much more celebrated George Michael would be in this day and age, compared to the enforced repression pushed on him by the British media and societal values in the 80s/90s. This is a perfect pop album, brilliantly crafted and executed
The Good: We get to have faith! The Bad: We don’t know in what… The Ugly: Getting caught… When I was still in my teens, I made a huge trip to the other side of the world to stay with family and work in their business. It was still the time of cassettes, though CD’s were slowly crawling into mainstream. One could still light up a cigarette during a long haul flight. We had big hair, not thick, just big! Oh, and we were nearing the end of the cold-war… There I was, living far away from my comfortable home, with my portable cassette player for which I can’t recall the brandname, nor can I recall excactly how long fresh batteries last… was it 8 hours? Anyway, I was reading a lot back then, detectives, thrillers, the odd weird thing, and I was listening to the albums that mostly reminded me of my friends home. This album was one of the ones that got a lot of airtime as it launched the year before, and I had listened to the hits at one too many parties! You listen differently to albums when you are far away from home, and don’t know how much longer the batteries will last… Playing this album, brought me right back to those lovely years. The travels I did, the new people I met, and the new memories created. For that, a huge thank you to George M. For those who feel that this album sounds too ‘80s… well, that’s because it was released in the middle of that ‘80s sound, where things were already becoming more polished. Also, if my memory serves me right, GM performed most, if not all, instruments on this album, and only for that we should give him another round of applause and thanks. a 5* without a doubt, for me!
Big sexy george
The best pop album of the 80’s
I have faith
Wow. Still.
Catchy, enjoyable. Great album!
Sexy and fantastic
Wham! guy has an album which reminds me of Brazil. 9/10
Pretty much a perfect pop album! All the songs are good and the quality of the singing is fantastic. I can’t really find fault with this one at all so an easy 5 star, no question. PS the guy was gay not a sex offender so piss off all you homophobic bellends!!
This whole album is great.
Faith is excellent front to back. It really was something when it came out. 4 number 1s. I Want Your Sex banned all over the US. And it won the Grammy for the record of the year at the 1988 Grammy Awards. This record made women want him and made men want to be him. And as it turned out, maybe the other way around too. This record was a part of my teenage universe and it's still as good today--and in some ways, better. I highly recommend the Wham documentary and the George Michael documentary that he was producing prior to his untimely passing.
Pretty much a perfect pop album by perhaps the greatest voice in that time period.
I didn't realize going into my first listen of this album just how many George Michael songs I was familiar with. This album was a treat from the first song to the last, with only one I didn't really enjoy. Michael is so talented and so diverse in his range. Faith and One More Try were night and day when it comes to their vibes, and both are absolutely phenomenally done by Michael. I enjoyed every moment of my time spent listening through this album.
Really did not expect this to be that good
Good old tunes
Every song. Perfection.
Always a great time, love me some GM. <3
Funky pop that hits way harder than I expected. 4.5, rounded up. Not a skippable song on the album, and many gems. Wow!
Father Figure
Essential eighties listening.
He owns this. His voice really sells the emotion. And being backed by MJ make this do gNo wrong.
So many amazing songs and that voice!!!
Favorite!
Oh how techno and dance music can make the mighty fall. Madonna and George Michael to name a few. If only he had stuck with this formula, he would have stayed relevant for so much longer. Well and maybe if he didn’t get caught trying to play footsie with that cop…. Anyways.. I want your sex, I remember lip syncing that song in my room, pretending I’m singing to a girl and dry humping the air and specific times. This album is a sex filled journey that doesn’t disappoint. I know enough about George Michael to know that this album was the cream of the crop for him and what a way to start and leave a mark with. There really isn’t much to not like on this album. The drums are a little too electronic but that was ok at the time. There are plenty of radio hits. This isn’t perfect but it’s timeless. You could play it to have sex and you could play it at a house party with drugs for free in the kitchen. Choice cut: Father Figure
A pure classic, and a highlight in the career of George Michael's. This is a true must listen for anybody who loves the 80's
I remember when songs from this album were released. Funny how every woman had a crush on George Michael. 5/5
Favorite George Michael CD!
ate left no crumbs
I know it's pure 80's schlock. I know the songs are all vaguely creepy. But I can't help but love this album. For pure nostalgia purposes if anything. This was EVERYWHERE when it came out. I was only 8 at the time but some of these songs are still blazed into my brain...
classic album, hard to top! Didn't age as well as I expected, but good!
Ahhhhhh I loved this album back in the day. George Michael was everyone’s crush. Men. Women. Didn’t matter. His sound was soooo good. RIP.
Stone. Cold. Classic.
YESSSS
This is top-tier pop, wow - love the funky sound, melodies and longer song length. Some of the lyrics feel overtly sexy but sonically this is a great listen
A nearly flawless classic.
The voice on this guy.
This album ages like the finest wine. Every song hits that perfectly produced 80’s sweet spot by avoiding drum machine/keyboard cliches that were oh so popular at the time in favor of a timeless bass/keyboard urban production that feels organic. While listening to this recently I realized that it just might be a concept album which starts with having faith that the right person will maybe eventually show up, to going through the beginning, middle and end phases of a toxic relationship. George: Thank you for creating a perfect pop album that still sounds relevant and modern nearly 40 years later. My opinion states that this album and Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” are the two best records of the 80’s.
The music gods have smiled on me this week. Love this album, such an 80s throwback and so many classics that are still as great today as they were then.
Late 80s extravaganza!
What a voice this man had
Wait? What? He was gay? 5.0
I vividly remember this being a big deal in the fall of 1987 when it came out. Videos with such memorable butts! It was one that I listened to quite a bit at the time, even if I didn't own it. I quite enjoyed it still today!
I could hear almost every minute of this album in my head from memory. Lots of fun!
An old friend. A favorite of favorites.
This was an album that I became very familiar with back when it was released. I snapped it up the moment it was available from Columbia House Records and Tapes. I found the listen today wonderful, familiar, and welcoming. Beautiful album.
We need more men in pop. Bangerz all around
This was a formative album for young 10- year old me in 1987. My family still teases me about singing along while walking around the house with my Walkman…his voice is awesome, the beats slap in that seriously 80’s synth way, and I think he intentionally pushed the envelope of what’s commercially acceptable/appropriate as it relates to sexual content in pop music.
Possibly the best 80s album, GM was untouchable here.
Amazing singer! I know every word, ihad this album on dubbed cassette, bought cassette, CD, minidisk. The opening of Faith gives me the shivers every time. Have spent hours and hours listening to this; it always takes me back to the hot summer days doing chores & dreaming of growing up.
A great album, my mom used to play this a lot so brought back some ace memories <3
AWESOME ALBUM I LOVE IT SO MUCH
Nice, great energy
Legendary album from an absolute legend. Gone too soon.
Lifetime achievement for this man! Easy 5 stars
In 1987 it was fun to see how long I Want Your Sex could play on the radio in the family car before your mom lost her shit over the smut and changed the station. George went from day-glo shorts to international sex symbol with this album. So much that it almost overshadowed his immense talent. The passion and sincerity in his soulful voice, the honest vulnerability in his writing, his masterful production skills, exceptional musicianship…this album showcases it all. George Michael was leading the charge for equality by singing about communication, sexuality, abuse, recovery, and change.
Not a big George Michael fan when he began his solo career but listenjng to this album really shows him at the height of his powers. His voice is amazing and I forgot about One More Try which is one of the best ballads of all time imho.
Incredibly catchy and danceable pop with funk/disco stylings. The title track and Father Figure are absolute peak 80s pop, while the closer Kissing a Fool is beautifully sung and has a thoughtfully-arranged, melancholy swing feel that just works perfectly. I could absolutely see myself putting this record on when I need a shot of energy in my day.
I spent a lot of time with this among many 80's albums and there is nothing aesthetically quite like the pop tone of George Michael. He deftly switches between styles as easily as 80's Queen or Prince, but creating this elevated, refined, grown up departure from his identity in WHAM! These acoustic to electronic genre hopping provides a bedrock for his particular brand of sexuality-- and no I'm not talking about his queerness. I'm talking about his brand of sex positivity. The thirsty themes on the album are impossible to ignore-- I mean looking at the album cover, the sexuality so visceral you can practically smell the combination of male pheromones, leather, and armpit. Despite not being able to be out as gay for his career, however, he became an advocate for openness to everyone else, suggesting a positive frankness about what can be a difficult and shameful topic. Terms are come to, however, with his closeted lifestyle and you hear it across the album as the genres flip. From the synth-driven minimalist belter-ballad "One More Try" to the heavily-lyrically-coded "Father Figure", using the Jewish 'Ahava Rabbah’ scale on the lead synth line (also used in traditional Jewish song "Hava Nagila".) It's not hard to see that he couldn't help but hint to his true identity, but did so in the most diverse & musically-informed way possible. Ultimately whether you're into him or not, this album is impossible to ignore, which made him a superstar. It's the enduring musical brilliance and complicated sensual depth, however, that make this album last forever.
Sublime.
Zoinks! I can only see supermodels. I wonder how many people had this on cassette? One of the better albums on this entire list.
Very easy to listen to. I didn't know all the songs but I knew most of them.
Bangers from front to back!
Fantastic and fantastically horny (in both senses of the word)
Day13 - maybe it’s not perfect but it’s close six great songs on one album and it’s not even a greatest hits album
After conquering the world with Wham!, George Michael wanted to prove that he could conquer the world on his world and, on Faith, he basically did just that. What most fail to take into account is that George was a student of music and that kind of level of attention in regards to how a song should work was what enabled him to not stick out like a sore thumb across various genres and styles, bringing his own brand of rock and roll on the title track, blending with the dance sojourn on I Want Your Sex and Monkey and perfecting the R&B ballad on Father Figure and One More Try. Faith is as perfect of a mission statement as one can make and George Michael had to be the one to take it to the top.
Such a goddamn perfect, beautiful pop album. It's a masterpiece, more on the level of Purple Rain than Thriller (and that's a huge compliment). Loaded with bangers, and not one snooze in the bunch.
Incredibly beautiful
5/5 Perfection
I expected nothing less than the best from pne of the biggest pop stars of all time.
Brilliant grown up debut
uhm…..wow. a breath taking pop masterpiece. i’d hate to have been the other guy. george’s voice is pure gold. the instrumental flawless. the songs are absolute classics.
Love it
Classic George
I love George. Just great songwriting.
really good, kinda prince-ish. title track is amazing.
Beautiful album, great songs, wonderful voice. What a talent George Michael was.
Fun album! My cat Pip especially loved Faith :)
Beautiful album!
Sex.
I love this album so much, it’s one of my favourites of all time. George’s vocals are beautiful.
Classic 80s sound
Front end loaded with hits, other songs are very cool. It’s a great record!
Own it on vinyl. Love his voice!
Apologies, I ADORE this album. Actually, no apologies. I didn't actually own a copy until last year. Back in '87 and early '88 and it was everywhere in my world. You couldn't escape it. Not that I wanted to. The songwriting and production is perfect pop for me. Yes, Georgie is trying to grow up. He lays down a marker for this on tracks like Kissing a Fool and Father Figure. But the fun is still there on I Want Your Sex. Ewww. This actually seemed radical at the time. He's a great artist, and this is his peak. Spin on that, MUTHAS.
It's easy to look back now and dismiss but this was and still is an incredible achievement. There's a few weaker tracks but this album contains some real outstanding music that was very successful. And yes, godammit I enjoyed listening to them!
banger after banger, fucking amazing
Listened Before? Y Oh yes!!! This album was iconic in the late 80s! Everyone was all up in arms about "I Want Your Sex", and now we've got WAP. You can't stop music. And you can't ignore the fact that this album is just literally banger after banger top to bottom. One of the greatest pop albums of all time? Certainly one of the best I've ever heard. He was a special talent. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: I Want Your Sex, Father Figure
A pop classic of it’s time- not For me , but I recall a lot of my friends loved this album.
Sexy album by one of the best pop stars in history.
So many great tracks on this. Definitely his finest album in my opinion.
I already know it so well
top notch album that was somewhat controversial when it came out due to its lyrics
10/10 I love the way George Michael makes everything sound so fun and engaging a very talented soul :)
Absolutely amazing
George Michael really just can’t do anything wrong in my eyes. I guess I’m just biased.
JORGEEE MIGUEL
Old Favorite
Faith capolavoro, bellissima anche Father figure. Un album molto vario e interessante.
No era yo muy fan de George Michael. Pero se merece un 5.
Great!
5/5 classic.
Faith was the first time I'd ever liked a George Michael song, but the remaining songs left me cold. At the time I was a pub rock devotee with a dislike for anything that had a dance or electronic bent. How my tastes have changed. Anything with a bit of funk lures me in and this album oozes funk. Yesterday's album was that batshit crazy "There's a Riot Going On," which is the godfather of '70s funk. This is its sexy nephew.
ive listened to it before. i mean its george michael.
As a debut solo album entirely written and produced by Michael, this is quite the post-Wham! statement. Characterised by catchy melodies, lyrics with something to say, and funky bass, this is a brilliant soulful pop album. The opening three tracks of Faith/Father Figure/I Want Your Sex set the tone and the standard never substantially dips. The two ballads (One More Try/Kissing a Fool) come a good times providing breaks from the funkiness and allow Michael's beautiful vocal to wash over you. 4.5/5
Totally not my style of music. But you cannot help but smile when listening to this. So full of passion and is just beautiful. And it does have some classic songs on it. A-
Classic
Very good
Great album. "One More Try" is one of my favorites.
First half fantastic
Couple of dud tracks but an otherwise crucial album
Awesome
sksak
80s pop nostalgia - ain’t it grand?
Pretty much every song on this album is a classic.
Can't go hating on George Michael
Very cool album!
Really enjoyed it. Will listen again soon
Mis canciones fav fueron ambas partes de "I Want Your Sex" y "Monkey", grandes beats. En fin, fan. 10/10.
Damn. I forgot how great this album is. The first album I ever purchased, as well.
You gotta have faith!
Fedt album og lækker 80er lyd. Mange numre holder stadigvæk
Great songs, great vocals
Monstrous 80s pop album, how could it not be? George Michaels solo debut, a seemingly pretty charming dude, loved by a bunch of people. Obviously I know who he is, he made “Careless Whisper” and “Fastlove,” and… well, there are some huge hits off of here. The A-side is two home runs and a strikeout, hilariously. “Faith” is an obvious banger, and “Father Figure” is a classic of adult contemporary, and then there is a 9-minute song called “I Want Your Sex.” I can’t believe this song exists. It’s not even bad, it’s just soooooooo funny. And then from there on out it’s just kinda boring pop numbers “One More Try” is alright but the teacher metaphor is kinda weird and it’s too safe and a bit too long. The B-side is all soft numbers and high-tempo synth funk joints. They’re not bad but they don’t make much of an impression, especially not for the cultural impact this album had. I recognize so many of these songs, and I didn’t even realize it. It’s like the first time I heard “Little Red Corvette” with the knowledge of the song it was, and immediately thought “ohhhh shit I KNOW this song.” All in all, I’m not surprised this album is here, and it deserves its spot. That being said, it doesn’t deserve it because of any sort of exceptional musical quality, at least not all the way through. 7.7/10
Dana Carvey as George Michael on Weekend Update is perhaps my earliest memory of SNL (and George Michael).
Probably George’s best solo album overall. 4
Sex... this is so comical and ridiculous, hard to believe anyone takes this music seriously. It does take me back to being a kid when the lifeguards were playing this type of stuff. I'd never listen to it willingly. 4 for nostalgia.
Really enjoyed this album and not just the classics. The whole record had a really cohesive and unique feel. Will definitely revisit.
Its a great sounding album with the ambition of being michael jackson with a much higher sex drive. Great Songs on it. (3.5/5.0)
Great album, I like the sound
great
Listening to this album, you understand who Justin Timberlake wanted to be, in part (MJ, we will see you later). It's a relatively easy listen. With 4 absolute nukes to open the album you realize why folks were ushering in the 90s with this man's music. It does cool off, and the second half is pretty pedestrian. I can't give it 4 stars on quality but it would be a crime to give it 3 stars with 3 iconic songs opening.
Dated, hit or miss opening cuts are followed up by a strong showing to the end. This album hasn't aged as gracefully as it could but it's well worth a listen.
I know this is a huge record at the time and now. I know I am familiar with a bunch of his tracks, maybe off this record.
Sehr cooles Album von ihm, hat mir gefallen
RIP Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou
3.5 favs: faith, father figure, monkey they sang this on glee
131223 18:16 3.5
This is a fantastic pop record that I think would be a hit even if released today. It’s well crafted, very horny, and Michael’s singing is incredible throughout.
Sometimes it’s nice to just get a turn-your-brain-off album There’s a lot of good catchy songs on here, with the title track and Look at Your Hands being my favorites. George Michael’s got a good voice and it’s pretty easy to get invested. I think it’s kinda cool to see this super straightforward pop blueprint dipped in all sorts of genres (funk, jazz, soul etc). It has a lot of Michael Jackson influence, to the point where it’s almost too much at times The main problem with this album is just the blatant lack of depth. I know the historical context of him not being out of the closet yet is important, but pretty much every song on this is just some form of him wanting someone (don’t even get me started on I Want Your Sex being like 10 minutes long). I’m not going to pretend this albums super deep or really anything besides an album that’s supposed to sound good, which is just kinda Pop in general. As long as an album’s fun and actually has songs to sing to, I will almost certainly like it.
if he wants my sex then frankly we should let him have it
Really solid album with some strong hits.
Based on my teenage boy memories and the fear I had of having someone jumping out and questioning my sexuality if I admitted to liking this album, I was fully prepared to brush past this. The guy's voice is phenomenal, the music is good, he has something of a one track mind. Having said that, it was a solidly good album
Good for 80s
4.5 Been genuinely impressed by the solo George Michael albums I’ve gotten. Really full, well-developed, well produced pieces of pop. Michael’s voice is extraordinary, obviously, but the songs are spectacular too. Really fun to listen to! There’s a real modernity to his 90s stuff, they seem deeply influential. They’re due for some cultural reappreciation imo.
A lot of power. Organ was great -- gave that Sunday-morning vibe an extra punch. Had a strong Michael Jackson vibe with the beats -- quick hits in a 1-3 pattern. Listened a couple times.
SUS ALARM.. 🚨 SUS ALARM.. 🚨 HOLYYYYY SUSSSSS naast alle sus lyrics s het wel een vibe album
Oh George. Well let’s see how I feel.. at least this is British pop from the 80’s that I believe belongs here… Yeah, I knew like 75% of these songs as a kid. That’s… freaky. Sex is such a core element of this, it’s Prince without the funk and so much more… earnestness. I always feel like sex is a bit tongue in cheek for Prince. He’s sexy, but there’s humor. There’s no humor with George Michael. It’s just sex. Father Figure is down right creepy. Sorry. But my brother and I knew all the lyrics as KIDS. This song was EVERYWHERE. And well… try to tell me there’s no sexual implication. I. Will. Laugh. In. Your. Face. Anyway, George gets a 4. I mean it’s a good, consistent album. I can’t do 5. I just can’t. Boolean: yes, but then maybe take a shower, either for relief or to scrub yourself clean.
didn't expect to like this as much as i did. very stereotypically 80s, but i liked it. look at your hands was my favourite, something about the lyrics really did resonate with me
A little repetitive, but its a good album. The transition from the sex song to the instrumental one is really funny.
Faith was when I realized, oh this motherfucker actually has Talent! I didn’t think the guy from Wham! could produce such next-level pop. I mean Wham! was fun but disposable. He surprised me with his frankness and his musical instincts. “Faith”, “Father Figure” and “I Want Your Sex” are an opening three tracks I’d put up against anyone. It was kind of a shock to a suburban white kid who still hadn’t figured out George was gay! Not everything works; the back half of the album is either a bit too earnest or naive, and “Look At Your Hands” is just nasty victim-blaming. Some of that God complex he grew into creeps in a little. But damn the tracks do swing hard, signaling a coming-out (nudge nudge) party for Andrew Ridgeley’s bandmate.
Well, if Bad was not another a world-beating collection of hits like Thriller, Faith sure seemed game to fill in. That this came out right as I was figuring out that adults in the 1980s were weird about sexual content in the media, well, George Michael, Prince, and Madonna were more than happy to point a spotlight on that part of being a human. Anyhow, this thing was everywhere for years. I listened to the radio a bunch, we had it on in the car, and Faith crossed multiple formats. My Mom’s easy listening station invariably had one of the hits, my proto-alternative station might have the title track or “Monkey” (a ludicrous song, love it). By 1989 it felt like you couldn’t go a day without hearing “Father Figure” or “One More Try” which, I’ve had phases where I like elements of the latter’s melody, but y’all...this is maybe the first experience I had with an artist being overplayed. All. The. Time. Woke Sociopolitical Sidebar: I like Faith and Michael, but it’s hard not to look at this as one of the classic paths a white, usually male star takes going solo, especially from their “unserious, teenybopper” act: imitate the actually innovative Black artist of the time, put a big “this guy fucks” sign on it, make sure to keep some pop songs on to not freak out your existing fans. Michael even boasts about the real success was going #1 on the Black charts, playing up the trope of Black people being more innately sexual: “I knew this album would be a shock or a surprise to people in this country. The uptempo side of the new music is more overtly sexual, more black." C-c-c-c-c-c-c-cmon. Also one of the 1980s English or American artists to look at non-Western sounds and sure, why not? An Egyptian melody? Does it work or make any sense? No idea.
4/5
Damn. Another album that I was aware of the reputation of but had never heard, this record is well deserving of its status. George Michael's voice is simply heavenly, and he's able to deliver lyrics that are tender on one song in the same way as the overly charged sexual ones that he'll sing on the next one. He truly proves himself as a serious artist with this record.
Started out strong positive dance songs / then finished with a downer. He lost love?
This has such a horny vibe to it that it’s tempting to say it’s the type of album Isaac Hayes would’ve made if he was a white, closeted Brit in the late 80s. And I mean that in good ways all across the board (and I understand Michael was open about being British). Regardless of one’s orientation, I think we as a culture should have a serious conversation about the frequent “father figure/daddy” references in a sexual context. And also this choice of cover art looking like a deodorant ad.
A tale of two sides: the A-side is epic and monumentally influential; the other side is mostly flat.
Good old 80s pop. Everyone knows Faith, of course, and that's a banger for sure. There are a few others here that I would never have admitted to liking back when I was a kid. But this album aged fairly well if you don't pay attention to the lyrics too closely. It's well recorded, well produced, well sung. I think it checks all the boxes it was trying to check when George Michael set out solo. 3.75/5
This album suffers the same fate as many many others. While it has some brilliant moments, it is stuck by a kind of redundancy that is hard to overlook after a while. This sounds almost maddening coming from a techno fan but it is nevertheless true... Yeah, it is great and it is easy to understand why he was a super-star but at the same time while it is not dated, it is kind of specific and pop oriented. But to be clear he deserves fame for being on the top of the pops for a long time and he has a considerable playlist that goes beyond runway music. It could also be my mood, which is subject to change. OK, so I will not be hasty. It IS better than an average album by a better than average singer so away we go...
Classic pop album. Very sexy. Not sure about that monkey song though. Favorite track: Father Figure
It seems that if it's a classic 80s pop album, I just can't hate it. Yeah it's aged, but it just sounds so good. Glorious, velvety smooth cheese. Faves: Faith, Father Figure, Kissing a Fool
Hard Day is a banger and a great showcase for the hi-fi system's bass dynamics. Actually, a lot of tracks here are. Also, there appears not to be a bad track on this - so far they're all musically engaging. Also, also, George Michael apparently is a very good singer.

Another stone cold classic
This man loves sex and he loves an 80s backtrack.
Classy artist
For a debut album, this is an incredible rich, lush, and wonderful record. Huge range, sexy, soulful, but also great pop music. I had vaguely heard of George Michael before, but never really listened to him; that is going to change going forward. His vocals are so sonrous, his lyrics deep, the backing instruments (which he plays) are excellent and complimentary. I really loved this album and surprised myself in it. Those first three tracks have such range, are so enjoyable, and fuck hard.
Not really my thing but best version of what it is
When I was a kid I thought it was just shocking for shocking sake. But I’ve come to see it as a great album with lyrics that are not even that bad compared to what you hear nowadays
This is carried by the pure sauce that George Michael had. Outside of maybe Prince and Michael Jackson, I don't think any other man had more of that superstar quality than George Michael had at this time. The guy had charisma pouring out of him and it rubs off on his music, even if it has all the potential to be dated eighties cheese. It just works. Everyone knows and should rightfully love the title track. 'I Want Your Sex' is such a bop that you don't even notice that it is approaching the ten minute mark as you are too busy shaking your ass. 'Kissing A Fool' sounds like it could have been a old jazz standard, but I was shocked to see it was an original. This record is packed with sexed-up bangers. If its uncool to like this man, then I'll happily be uncool.
Michael Jackson or George Michael, this album is as creepy as 80 could get in that sex is good sex is bad because aids era.
what can i say about it? it’s george michael, of course it’s good. lots of tik tok sounds come from this record, didn’t really expect that
Good clean fun. I liked this a lot.
I groaned when this popped up but not going to lie it was packed with some solid, sweaty, thirst trap filled gems. Pure 80s cheese but in a good way.
As corny as wham was this has its fair share of cheese. But it’s catchy and there were a bunch of hits. The biggest thing that really surprised me was that George Michael wrote, arranged, produced and played a bunch of instruments on this record. That is super impressive. Lot of respect for that. And for that I’m giving this 4 stars.
I want your sex kinda cringe pero album divertido me gusta
This album really delivers on what it set out to do
I'm a 90s kid so Faith is firmly a Limp Bizkit song in my book. Knew of this album, but never went all the way through. Some really surprising moments - One More Try, Father Figure, Look at Your Hands, Kissing a Fool. A little cheesy - it's the 80s after all - but lots to love here.
7/10, Faith is so good but then there are some hits and misses
Probably the horniest album I've had so far on this.
I was gonna give this a five. More than half the songs were hits. But that last song killed it for me. Kissing A fool - GREAT song - should have ended the album. So 4.4
Couldn't help but dance, sway, and feel my way through this album. Loved it!
This slaps! Great vocals, queer energy.
Great.
My teenage self wasn’t into this album. Teenage selves are often wrong. This is some fantastic pop.
He really wanted to have gay faith sex. 7/10
Sehr schöne Musik die man auch kennt
This album was sponsored by shoulder pads and hairspray. Every song has the reverb pumped up to 110%. George Micheal has never thought "maybe these vocals are too breathy" not once in his entire life. Whole album just makes you want a Glamour Shots photo shoot asap. Four stars
Great 80s album. I think it hold up well
It was classic George Michael has some bangers on it. Respect for my mother's admiration.
Keep sex illegal
Sympa
7 / 10 - Poppig mit R&B, Soul & Funk Einflüssen - Sehr gute Produktion - Durchgehend Fantastische Basslines Favs: - Faith - Monkey - Kissing A Fool
Shortly after finishing this album, a bedraggled man walked into my work and asked if he could leave a backpack at the security desk. We asked where he was going, and he told us, "To hell if I don't change my ways", before turning around and walking out the front door. I had been excitedly awaiting the arrival of George Michael on this list, and I was not disappointed. An incredibly talented pop and R&B songwriter with a strong voice and incredible charisma, all wrapped up in one of the gayest men to ever be gay; I already loved countless songs from him and heard his praises from Seth (and in the aftermath of listening to the album, I discovered that my mom absolutely loved George Michael as well). I will start by saying there are a few elements of this album which bring it down a bit for me: there are a few lyrical moments across the album that don't sit exactly right, from one or two pushy lines in I Want Your Sex to the entire concept of Look at Your Hands, and while I respect the sentiment of it, I just can't bring myself to take Monkey seriously. However, it is a testament to the sheer strength of the songwriting on display that these moments hit me only as roadblocks on the album and not complete derailments. Many of the other lyrical moments which could have been corny uncool in other hands are made suave and seductive by Michael; the album oozes raw sex appeal from beginning to end, both in his slightly gruff yet still emotive singing or the bright instrumentation full of synth stabs, horns, and backing choirs. I also always have respect for a musician like George Michael who is able to tackle nearly every aspect of their music with their own hands, as he played most instruments and handled most of the production himself. The worst songs here are still at least catchy in some way, and the best songs here are some of the most powerful pop ballads I've heard in a long time. It comes just shy of a 5 for me, but I know I'll find another album in his discography just waiting for that score. Highlights: Faith, Father Figure, I Want Your Sex (Pts. 1 & 2), One More Try, Hand to Mouth, Look at Your Hands, Kissing a Fool
Solid album. Lots of David S Pumpkins vibes.
honestly didn’t know his solo went hard
The first four songs are five star level. But the level drops at the back end and the last track feels downright interminable.
A very emotional journey that takes you through all the thoughts that you go through in love. Very special album but lacks an emotional gut punch or deeper thinking that would make it 5 stars.
I love George Michael. This album is a classic.
I much prefer heartfelt, lovelorn George Michael to horny George. So basically every other song on this album. Father Figure and One More Try are all time great songs.
I did not have faith, now I have faith
Massive sounding, dramatic, passionate album. You can hear the Michael Jackson and Prince influences loud and clear. 3 today but a 4 for its time
Great voice and commendable for his song writing. Some of the production is of it's time especially on 1st listen but the talent surfaces above this and the album is a positive experience
Fun album
Pretty cool album
4/5
Oozes sensuality
A great pop/crossover album. Took me back to the heady days of the late 80s. The eponymous Faith is probably my favourite track.
His best album
Not my thing in truth. And to my ears half the album is fairly standard fare. But the first three tracks are standout bangers, and were always going to be a hard act to follow. For that George gets a full on 4*
The first 3 tapes I ever bought with my own money were Wham! My mom wouldn't let me buy this album because of "I Want Your Sex."
Never thought I’d be writing this much about a George Michael album, but here we are… George Michael was a controversial figure in 1987—at least in my house, where everything was buttoned-down, Christian, and conservative. You simply did not sing about wanting anyone’s sex. Ever. Going into this album, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I knew the hit singles, of course; they were inescapable in the late ’80s, back when MTV ruled the cultural landscape. What I hadn’t done until now was sit down and listen to the full record front to back. That turned out to be more revealing than I expected. Songs like the heartbreak ballad “One More Try,” which I hadn’t heard in decades, land with far more emotional weight now than they ever did when I was twelve. Meanwhile, “Monkey,” with its weirdly funky, playful energy, remains a quintessential slice of ’80s dance pop—and is somehow still catchy as hell nearly forty years later. The title track “Faith” holds up well, even if its constant rotation over the years has dulled some of its impact. The album version of “I Want Your Sex,” though, is the real curveball. Split into two parts and stretching past nine minutes, it veers sharply away from the punchy, synth-and-bass-driven pop single everyone remembers and morphs into a horn-heavy R&B jam. It feels indulgent, and maybe a little like filler by the time it rolls around, but it’s still an interesting and occasionally fun detour. As for “Last Request (I Want Your Sex, Pt. 3),” I’m choosing to pretend it doesn’t exist—it plays more like an unnecessary reprise than a fully realized track. The album closes with “Kissing a Fool” (the final track if you were listening on vinyl), a jazz- and big-band-leaning ballad where George Michael unexpectedly slips into full crooner mode, channeling the spirit of Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin. It’s a song about the quiet pain of loving someone who’s insecure about who you are, and it ends the record on a surprisingly mature, restrained note. I don’t hold a special place in my heart for George Michael; he was simply a massive pop star who existed during my formative years without ever really shaping my musical identity. Even so, it’s hard to completely separate nostalgia from critical judgment—but accounting for that, this is a genuinely strong and immaculately produced 1980s pop album, one that unquestionably deserves its place on this list.
Overall this is a great 80's pop album. There are some huge and controversial hits here and the rest of the album holds up as well. I can him peppering in some of the ideas and vibes that would pop up in later albums. A surprisingly solid 4.
I liked that there were different styles of music on this album. Best song, "Kissing A Fool" as its style was reminiscent of the music from the 30's and 40's. Worst song, "Hard Day" as it was too repetitive for me.
Holds up with time except for a few dated bits of tiny thin Casio keyboard bits near the end. He was a talented man, even if it’s not my thing.
I like his sound. Liked a few songs but didn't love it.
You gotta have....
Such a strong opening trio. Realized I love GM more than I thought.
good sound well produced
I expected to not love this. I don’t love the way George’s vocals sit in this album, almost a little too buried, but the sound and production on this album as you’re listening you can’t help but smile. It’s so warm and moorish. Not every song was a banger but I really enjoyed it overall.
Very catchy
Starts off incredibly strong but falters with a bit too much horniness later Specific rating - 3.8 Fav song - Faith Least fav- monkey
George's solo debut, after leaving Wham! behind. Great opener with 'Faith', leading into 'Father Figure' and then 'I Want Your Sex'. It's all fun and a bit silly in parts, but does highlight George's vocal and emotional range. It gets a bit more serious with 'Kissing A Fool' and 'Hand to Mouth', and is a great snapshot of what music was like in the late 80s.
Great album, I really enjoyed the popular songs, and the rest were all very vibey. Imagine this coming out in 1987 - it was a huge hit.
A enjoyable album. Most pop albums have a few singles and a lot of filler. This is mostly good start to finish.
Every single one of these songs is too long. Great pop album. Love the song about spanking the monkey.
4/5 - great album
Nice
i have a twin obsessed with George Michael so it's cool to hear an album by him ! very very important album for a community which needed it at the time, and it's just beautiful rnb infused pop album. i wish kissing a fool had A. a sax solo and B. was the last track on the album, cause it really deserves to have it all. shoutout wham
Kralj popa za mene šta god drugi govorili. A ovo je baš dobar album i pored najpopularnijih pjesama. Muzički vrhunski, bas fantastičan, njegov glas bez greške, a izuzetno cijenim i ove ozbiljnije tekstove.
I guess foreplay is the best in sex but it’s still part of the fun. One more try is ok. Loads of reverbs, but at least he can sing. He does a lot of “ah”s and sounds way too horny. Is he gay
George really likes sex huh? All time song with Faith! The album definitely falls off the further you get into it, but the start is so strong it ranks high for me.
Track 1. (Faith) just so iconic, love love love. 8.5/10 Track 2. (Father Figure) It is also incredibly iconic, having recently gained a massive surge of new fans on TikTok. 8.5/10 Track 3. (I Want Your Sex) Veryyy 80s bro total time captual. Not incredible, definitely a little underwhelming. 6.8/10 Track 4. (One More Try) His voice was truly one of a kind. Very sensual and got that raw emotion to it. 8.9/10 Track 5. (Hard Day) Good vibe. A little underwhelming. 7.5/10 Track 6. (Hand to Mouth) Also very distinct 80s vibe is going on. Good but not amazing yk. George is allergic to making a bad song. 7/10 Track 7. (Look at Your Hands) loving this melody. 8/10 Track 8. (Monkey) yeah, it's good idk what to say. 7/10 Track 9. (Kissing a Fool) oh this is fucking good. 9/10 Track 10. (A Last Request (I Want Your Sex)) good. 7.5/10 Overall Score: 7.8/10
I wish there were 9 more Kissing a Fools but still a great album
Great memories. Some highlights; mostly saw George Michael as a chart pop star, but of course he was better than that. Well worth a revisit and George deserves his place in the elite.
My original review got washed due to a frozen browser, so I'll just hit the high points from memory. Flat out, I enjoyed this album. I had little expectation going in as 80s pop is mostly miss for me, but I enjoyed the confidence, energy, and vocal delivery throughout. Sure this is brimming with kooky 80s production (e.g., tinny horns, weird animal sounds, heavily quantized drums), but somehow that managed not to take away from the experience. Faith sounds like a Lion King song, which I know is backwards because this came first. Honestly its just a fun little jam. Father Figure, while having one of the creepiest choruses of a love song that I can think of, is undeniably catchy. For all its cringe, I unironically enjoy this song and find myself singing it randomly... I Want Your Sex taps into a Prince-like energy. Honestly kind of a jam too. And while I don't usually enjoy ballads, One More Try works for me on some level -- almost has a religious tone to it. Monkey is probably the kookiest song on here. It sounds a lot like Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax and features literal monkey samples. Also sounds like Tech N9ne took inspiration for one of his songs from this one (can't remember which song). As I said, this was a much more enjoyable listen than I expected. Solid 4 imo.
Chad Michael
Significantly less ballads than the other George Michael we did, and when it is upbeat it's all fun campy danceable pop.
-an ostensibly horny album, it's actually all about love, fidelity, and trust (after all, it's Faith) -GM is an unbelievably underrated singer and producer
Justin Timberlake ain’t got nothing on George Michael. Holy cow, what a great album this is! I saw this, and I thought, I don’t know if I’m going to dig it, then I found out that 7 of the 10 songs were singles, and of course, I love this album. the This is my wheelhouse of my pop music years growing up. This album came out in 1987, which meant I was 13. I knew George Michael as the guy from WHAM!. How did I know that? I had WHAM!’s breakthrough album Make It Big on cassette when i was 10. It’s funny tho, I didn’t buy this album, his solo debut, on cassette. But I loved almost all the songs that were released as singles. I may have been slipping into my metal til I die phase in which I was too cool for pop music. Faith, his biggest worldwide hit from this album, was not only a banger, but the video was great too. George Michael was trying to change his image a bit and converted from the nice, good-looking, boyband guy to the leather jacket wearing, guitar-strumming dude, ladykiller, dude in a biker gang. Um, it might not have fully worked, but I’d say most know Michael from his solo success rather than his time with WHAM!. Hell, he had 10 number one songs, sold millions upon millions of albums, and kind of catapulted himself to legend status by the end of his life. While I didn’t buy this album when it came out, I sure as heck fire bought a cassette single of I Want Your Sex. Even as a 9-year-old, I knew this song was baby-making music and was not something to play in front of adults. Even the title of the song at the time seemed very risque for 1987. Besides the whole tabooness of it, the groove is undeniable. This is electronic/synth music at its best. It’s and 80s song that doesn’t sound like the 80s. Michael definitely found a way to make his sound undefinable by era. Now, the other songs, listening to them again for the first time in decades, I wonder how he got away with the lyrics. Father Figure? Check out those lyrics. One More Try? Check out those lyrics. I Want Your Sex? I don’t really remember any outrage or protest with the lyrical content. I do remember quite a bit of controversy over Prince’s lyrics, Ozzy Osborne’s lyrics, even Frank Zappa’s lyrics from an album that had no lyrics. It must be because all the songs are just one banger after another. While I wouldn’t have thought this was an album you needed to hear before you die, I was way off. This is a very underrated album, at least it was by me. Do yourself a favor, when you need to get your groove on, fire this record up, it’s just what you didn’t know you needed.
Kinda hit ngl
Didn’t realize how many of these were all over the airways in 87–88
One More Try
george michael you will always be famous 4.5
Pop classic. From the first strains of a church organza through the guitar.
Mostly enjoyed more than expected, some are a bit slow but overall fun
Great! Some songs that I have heard before, most notably Father Figure, and then some fun songs that sound familiar but not exactly like songs I know. Then a couple of more boring songs that are just ok. Overall into it
This prompted more than a few eye rolls from me back at the time it was popular in 87/88, but there is no denying how big it was mainstream at that time. The tone and style sound very dated upon revisit. The first 3-4 tracks were very popular and still carry some merit today. Rounding up for impact and significance at the time of release. 3.5/5
I never liked or listened to this then, but with 5 of the 10 songs being played on airwaves everywhere or MTV that year it was pretty hard to avoid. Revisiting this today I was surprised at how dated it actually is, but still chalked full of catchy hooks. The front four songs alone boost this up into higher ratings. After that it kinda falls into sound-alike territory.
Didn’t absolutely love it, but Faith and Father Figure got me rounding up… 3.5/5
Great album. I forget how talented George Michael was.
fun album with some classics. had not appreciated george michaels voice till listening more closely. i want your sex and monkey is a lil weird : ). fun bass lines in some songs
4 steene
Chock- full of bangers for getting your bang on.
Wuhu så godt!! God George Michael energi😍
Hitparade, vild produktion og vild stemme, selvom nogle lyrics var questionable
8/10
