Great times
Superb pop album, perhaps a little long, but good. It isn't as good as listen without prejudice, but it isnt super far off. LwP is probably a little more gritty, but this one is polished. Good singles, good album tracks. Good
Solid 80s pop album.
Very good, GM had a fantastic voice...hadn't heard a lot of these tracks in a long time, the album is packed with a wide range of moods making it a pretty comprehensive example of the enormous talent he had. Forgot what an excellent track Father Figure was. Nine years later, he released the album Older, darker jazzier and in my view his best work.
Way better than I had expected. Lots of well known songs .enjoyed it!
Love the mix of 80s classics and a vocal standard style. Glad to get more time with this record
Nån gång runt 87-88 köpte jag min första stereo. En vit kub som hade allt. Kassett, radio, vinyl, högtalare och den nya innegrejen, CD-spelare hos en radio handlare i metropolen Genevad. Naturligtvis såldes även skivor i affären.
Absolutely banging. Lots of great songs sounds like a greatest hits. Yet not a grest album perse. The songs dont have a unifiying theme other than love but some great songs have no reason to be in that album. Still always great to hear a ton of great songs in the same album which os the case here
aside from a couple horrid ballads this is fun
My birthday twin and one of my earliest celeb crushes, RIP king
Hyvä levy
Not sure I've actually heard this album before but I have heard many of the songs. I didn't realize "I want your sex" had two parts (maybe 3 parts if you count the last song) and was a 9 minute song. George Michael is a pop legend and I'm glad to finally listen to this album. Some of his songs just really hit me right in the heart and bring me back to being a kid like few artists can. I feel like the album starts off strong with all the hits then slows a bit but overall a pretty good album.
This is another album that was played constantly by my college roommate. Didn’t care much for it then but it has grown on me. A little overwrought on the ballads but there are some solid pop songs on here and Michael pulls it off well. Come on, “Faith” is a great song and, despite “I Want Your Sex” (3 versions!) some of the lesser songs like “Your Hands” and “Monkey” are standouts. “Father Figure” is pretty cringe though and there is definitely a creepo aspect to the dude.
Lots of fun, had me grooving through it all. Was surprised to learn it was 51 minutes long felt like a tight 30
Great vocal and lyricist.
Good! A classic
Some powerful beats there, and a good voice. What's not to love?
81% Best: Faith; I Want Your Sex (Pts. 1 & 2) [specifically Pt. 2]; Hard Day Must-Hear? Sure
I enjoyed this a lot more than Listen Without Prejudice. Nicely done, boyo.
Its very front loaded and a bit dated but honestly I had a great time listening to this.
This certainly has all the pop sounds of the mid-80s, but it's still a great album. He has such a great voice, so perfect for ballads. Father Figure and One More Try are the highlights for me.
Lots of earworms on this one. Soooo horney. Holy cow.
Vældig fint album. Meget religiøst inspireret hvilket jeg ikke normalt har hørt så meget af, så det var en overraskelse, ligefrem en glædelig overraskelse. Kan godt se mig selv komme tilbage til dette album og give det endnu et lyt. 7/10
Great musicianship and singing, but somewhat juvenile lyrics sometimes, and sometimes uncomfortable lyrics... "Father Figure" and "One More Try" seem to have daddy issues...
It wasn’t bad. The album had the right amount of late 80’s cheesiness that made me nostalgic. I wouldn’t put this in my library but, if someone played this album, I would be fine with it.
I had no real idea how gifted he was before this projects. Anyway impressive songcraft/writing and singing.
A classic for a reason
Yeah this one was pretty nice, really good sounding in every song. 4 stars
You've gotta have faith.
So many hits
Nice! 7.8
La voix de George Michael est vraiment divine, toutes les pièces sont richement arrangées. «I Want Your Sex» est un florilège de techniques de coercition, on s'en sort pas, mais la pièce reste audacieuse et entraînante
Just good, fun 80s pop. Listened to it and had Father Figure stuck in my head all day.

This is a great album. Full disclosure when I was 9 years old this was my favorite album and I wrote a letter to George Michael's fan club. I don't believe I got a response but I won't hold that against George. This was my first time listening to the album since I had the cassette tape and it holds up really well. I was unaware at the time how horny Micheal was during the recording of this album but I certainly take more of it now. This would be a 5 if not for a few filler tracks but it holds up well and is expertly produced.
Everyone’s heard Faith and Father Figure a hundred times, but I Want Your Sex? That should be the intro track to every sex ed class ever.
just soso
Helvetin kova! Erittäin Prince-henkinen 4/5
Say what you want. Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou had the sauce.
George at the top of his game, had to check it was not a compilation with that many bangers on it.
His best.
Whew. 3.7.
Great pop writer, YMMV on this era of music. For me, I was done by Look at Your Hands.
Hidden gems mixed among a slew of hits. I would definitely revisit this one.
Sexy music for gay dudes
Never really been a big fan. I've heard all of his hits but I don't know that I've ever listened to an album of his. I have to admit, I'm pleasantly surprised. He's either a good songwriter or works with someone who really knows their shit. There is use of passing chords, subdominants, etc. You don't find that in your run of the mill pop songs.
80/100. Faith by George Michael is a great pop record, showcasing his incredible vocals and well-written songs. The album is a smooth and enjoyable listen, blending pop, R&B, and soul influences effortlessly. For me, the standout track is "Kissing a Fool," which highlights his vocal and songwriting brilliance.
Got Michael Jackson and queen vibes from the songs

The hits are great and still sound good. Everything else is standard issue dance pop.
This one's still got it. Faith is one of those albums that almost dares you not to enjoy yourself, and I didn’t even bother resisting. It's slick, cheeky, confident, and genuinely well-crafted pop. I’d forgotten just how strong the singles are until they started rolling in like old friends who still know how to charm the room. There’s a boldness in George’s voice that feels effortless, like he’s letting you in on a private wink while still sounding like a megastar. Some of the ballads haven’t aged quite as gracefully for me, but honestly, the highs more than make up for it. “Father Figure” still hits in its weird, haunting way, and “One More Try” works better than I remembered.
I’d be lying if I said I knew I’d like this album. This surprised me
Dans ce schtyle-là, il est bon George.
Bonne pop!
Favorite Track: Faith
A bit silly and goofy, but I really enjoyed listening to this album.
A big hit in its time, and a great example of state of the art production. But man, that guy was horny.
A taste of what was to come, never my bag at the time but now I am older I can appreciate how good he was
My mom used to play this album in the car all the time when I was a kid, so there’s definitely some nostalgia baked in. "Faith" & "Father Figure" starts this off strong, solid 5/5 energy, but loses a bit of its punch as it goes. “One More Try” is a well-done ballad, just a little slower than I usually want from George. Overall, the album gives major, dude wants to fuck everything energy, but hey, he also made a great pop record.
I can see why it was so popular. The songs are catchy and have great rhythms. The album sounds like something MJ or Prince would write. It sounds very dated but the songs are still great. Faith is a classic, but Monkey was the other standout to me.
This was my first listen. It sounded like 80’s pop but surprisingly it holds up well. I never thought I’d admit it, but I’m a fan.
smooth and sexy fun
Fav: Monkey Least Fav: I Want Your Sex - Pts. 1 & 2 Dutch Van Der Linde approves of this album
Horny album this
Dang, Pt. 4. On this 1,001 album journey one of my biggest self discoveries is I guess I’m a George Michael fan? I heard his big songs as a kid, and I found them catchy back then, but for whatever reason his songs never clicked with me. Sounds like the ‘80s in a good way. A few songs are meh, but some are MWAH (five stars). *monkey sounds*
some finely crafted pop music. hell of a start with Faith and Father Figure back to back
Probably everyone know this, but this album would be great for erotic endeavors
Solid album. Some really good and catch tracks. Faith is a good song. Worthy of a listen and a repeat.
Color me impressed. The entire album is extremely catchy and flashy with very crisp production. My neck and face are starting to hurt from the constant nodding and stank face. A 9 minute song about wanting to sex someone? Yes, please! However, Limp Bizkit's Faith>George Michael's.
Great album. So close to five stars
Definitely listened to a few of these songs as a kid and never knew it was by George Michael. I think he had quite an impact, especially for Europe, and during my parents' lives growing up. Not something I would to every single day but now and again it would give a nostalgic feeling. This is more for the music than lyrics
It was nice to remind myself of the classics
4.
Ah yes, Wham! was my first ever gig, I had such a crush on George. Such a good songwriter and what a voice. Tbh the production hasn’t stood the test of time. But still a banging debut solo effort. 3.5 rounding up for old times sake
Classic album. I really like two of the tracks: Father Figure and One More Try. Faith is OK and so is Monkey. I'm not as into "I Want Your Sex". Still pretty impressive that he packed this many huge songs into a debut album.
Gosh, those first 3 songs are just monsters, aren't they? Super catchy but spanning totally different vibes (acoustic hip shaking with 'Faith,' obsessive love[?] song with 'Father Figure,' and synthy pop with 'I Want Your Sex.') I also love the heavy gospel feel combined with totally inappropriate topics - pre-dating Madonna doing the same thing two years later with 'Like a Prayer.' If only the rest of the album was as strong. But can't deny I've had those 3 songs on repeat all weekend, and might add 'Faith' to my karaoke repertoire.
I actually liked it
Faith -> Sickk harmonies Hard days : great bassline
I now want to watch his biography. This album came out 6 years after the AIDS epidemic became, research shows George Michael was closeted to the public but maybe was coming out to himself at this time(?) and he writes this explicit album titled faith. What an emotional rollercoaster
This was nice to listen to.
Really Good. An incredible debut for an incredible artist. My favorite is definitely Father Figure. This album is an a perfect representation of George Michael
After leaving Wham!, Michael's debut solo album clearly made a statement, and solidified him as a legitimate solo artist going forward. He produced and wrote the majority of the album himself, which was rare at the time. It displays his talent as a complete musician, also being able to play piano/keyboard, drums, bass, and various other instruments to compliment his vocals. Speaking of which, his persona often seems to steal attention away from the fact that he is actually an exceptional vocalist. He delivers technically challenging songs with ease and a rich, soulful passion. He had many duets and collaborations with legendary singers over the years, and was more than able to hold his own. As soon as the organ starts playing during the beginning of "Faith", you get the feeling this won't be your typical pop album. In fact, the first few tracks (Faith, Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, and One More Try) showcase entirely different styles, while still fitting perfectly with the tone of the record. Michael has his share of critics, but it's difficult to discredit this album, which won the Grammy for Album of the Year and produced four number 1 singles. It was both a critical and commercial juggernaut.
I liked the 80s chill soundscapes more than the poppier songs but I am just a sucker for 80s synths
3.75
8/10
Какая же сексуальная обложка...
While some of these songs didn't hit, most of these are strong 80's bangers. I had a great fun time. 4.5 but rounding down because some where annoying.
Album of the year at the Grammys in 1989.
I know most of this through radio, music videos, and movies and never actually listened to the album as a whole before. It wasn't what I was into when it came out. But it has held up surprisingly well, from start to finish. Songs like Hand to Mouth and A Last Request are new to me and pretty good. A very surprising four stars.
I had never expected to listen to a whole album by George Michael. I never was a fan but did like some of his songs. So I was a bit surprised that I didn't find the album so bad, to be honest quite good.
Haven't ever listened to this album cover to cover but, it's pretty dang good. All of these songs remind me of childhood. It has that 80's, R&B/Pop feel that rings very nostalgic. Plus, half the album were hits/singles. The only song that threw me was the Kiss a Fool, which is a straight up jazz song... But it does ok. I enjoyed the album as a whole. 4/5
George michael was one handsome fellow. Based on this album he put it to good use.
"Wow! This album is really provocative ... I can't believe that little me was allowed to listen to this?!? But, Wham! It really is a fun album."
It is just a great fucking album!
7.5/10 fave: faith
Back when George Michael did his utmost best to be Michael Jackson
Wow, George Michael really is a thirsty bloke. Jokes aside, I really liked this! 'Faith' is an incredible opening track. Very funky and groovy! It actually sounds very fresh as well, almost could've been made today. Which is not something I can say for the rest of the album which sounds extremely 80s. Overall I feel like the album has a good mix of different types of songs to keep you interested. 'One More Try' is a powerful ballad, then you have the more uptempo and crazy stuff in 'Monkey', and then again some more funk inspired sounds in 'Hard Day'. And let's not forget that George Michael really is a stellar singer. I didn't know what to expect from this, but was positively surprised! Think this easily deserves a strong 4. Might even creep up to a 5 if I listen to it a bit more, who knows!
Very good
https://media1.tenor.com/m/eGXEi8JyuMcAAAAd/pam-sploosh.gif
This is really like a 3 star album, in my opinion, but Faith is a solid 5-star song, and Father Figure is like a 4, so it balances it out.
Great throwback to the 80’s, full of hits
What a great list of songs! This album is liberating and provocative. Never bores the listener.
you want my what?
I grew up in the 80s, and hadn’t heard nor even thought of George Michaels. And let’s admit, the 80s were a weird decade. But I really enjoyed this, there are quite a few really good songs on here.
benefits immensely from the aesthetic and thematic cohesion built around like a prayer-esque religious sexuality, esp since this is the version for leather homos which is just slightly cooler...and its cool how much he actually commits to the bit and creates these little devotionals to self expression and transcendental pleasure and reaching some elemental part of urself. often more about grooves and vibes and iteration than big pop melodies but thats not a bad fit for this obviously! im not sure if its better than the other george micheal album i got ages ago but its more obvious coherency has left a stronger first impression, im sure ill think ab this sometimes
# George Michael’s *Faith*: A Definitive Analysis of Lyrics, Music, Production, Themes, and Legacy George Michael’s *Faith* (1987) stands as a landmark achievement in 1980s pop music, blending genre-defying compositions, introspective lyricism, and meticulous production into a cohesive artistic statement. As his debut solo album following the dissolution of Wham!, *Faith* marked Michael’s evolution from teen idol to a mature, self-assured auteur. This review examines the album’s lyrical depth, musical innovation, production excellence, thematic complexity, and enduring influence, while critically assessing its strengths and occasional limitations. --- ## Lyrical Craftsmanship: Vulnerability and Defiance ### Emotional Authenticity in Love and Longing *Faith*’s lyrics oscillate between bravado and vulnerability, reflecting Michael’s nuanced exploration of romantic relationships. The title track, “Faith,” serves as a declaration of independence, with Michael rejecting superficial connections in favor of self-respect: *“Before this river becomes an ocean / Before you throw my heart back on the floor”*[2]. Here, the river-ocean metaphor underscores his fear of emotional overwhelm, while the refrain *“I gotta have faith”*[2] becomes a mantra for self-preservation. In contrast, “Father Figure” delves into the complexities of desire, blurring lines between romantic and paternal love. Lines like *“I will be your father figure / Put your tiny hand in mine”*[1] evoke a haunting mix of intimacy and power dynamics, showcasing Michael’s willingness to confront taboo themes. Similarly, “One More Try” strips away pop’s typical artifice, laying bare the anguish of unrequited love: *“I’m afraid of what I feel / I’m afraid of what I know”*[1]. These confessional moments elevate the album beyond mere chart fodder into deeply personal territory. ### Social Commentary and Subtle Protest While predominantly focused on relationships, *Faith* contains underappreciated social critiques. “Hand to Mouth” addresses economic inequality with lines like *“Hand to mouth / Living on the edge of time”*[3], framing poverty as systemic rather than individual failure. “Look at Your Hands” tackles gun violence through visceral imagery: *“Look at your hands / They’re bleeding from the things you’ve done”*[3]. Though less overt than contemporaries like Bruce Springsteen, these tracks reveal Michael’s growing consciousness of his platform. ### Controversy and Misinterpretation The album’s most notorious track, “I Want Your Sex,” suffered from reductive readings due to its provocative title. Intended as a pro-monogamy anthem during the AIDS crisis (*“Sex is natural / Sex is fun / Sex is best when it’s one on one”*[3]), its message was overshadowed by moral panic. This disconnect between artistic intent and public reception remains a cautionary tale about cultural context[3]. --- ## Musical Innovation: Genre Synthesis as Rebellion ### Pop, Rock, and R&B Alchemy *Faith*’s sonic palette defies categorization, weaving rockabilly (“Faith”), soul (“Kissing a Fool”), and funk (“Monkey”) into a cohesive whole. The title track’s iconic riff, blending Bo Diddley rhythms with synth-pop sheen, epitomizes this hybridity[1]. “Monkey” merges Jam & Lewis’s Minneapolis funk with Michael’s soulful delivery, its propulsive bassline masking lyrical references to addiction (*“monkey on your back”*[3]). ### Balladry as Artistic Risk Michael’s jazz influences shine in “Kissing a Fool,” where smoky piano chords and restrained phrasing evoke Frank Sinatra’s late-night introspection[3]. “One More Try” ventures further into gospel territory, building from sparse keys to a climactic choir-supported finale. These slower tracks challenged 1980s pop conventions, privileging emotional resonance over danceability. --- ## Production Mastery: Studio as Instrument ### Layered Textures and Spatial Dynamics As producer, Michael crafted a lush yet precise soundstage. “Father Figure” exemplifies this approach, layering fretless bass, synthetic strings, and multi-tracked vocals into a sensual haze[1]. The decision to foreground acoustic elements in “One More Try”—isolating piano and voice—creates visceral intimacy, while “Hard Day” employs aggressive brass stabs for rhythmic propulsion[1]. ### Technological Experimentation *Faith*’s use of emerging tech remains influential. The LinnDrum programming on “I Want Your Sex” predated mainstream hip-hop’s sampling revolution, while the pitch-shifted vocals in “Monkey” demonstrated MIDI’s creative potential[1]. Yet these innovations never overshadow organic instrumentation; live guitars and saxophones maintain human warmth amidst digital experimentation. --- ## Thematic Cohesion: Self-Discovery in the Spotlight ### Faith as Dual Metaphor The album’s title encapsulates its central tension—faith in oneself versus faith in others. Tracks like “Faith” and “I Want Your Sex” champion self-reliance (*“It takes a strong man, baby / But I’m showing you the door”*[2]), while “One More Try” and “Kissing a Fool” acknowledge the peril of emotional isolation. This duality mirrors Michael’s own struggle to redefine himself post-Wham![3]. ### Sexuality and Spirituality Michael’s ambiguous sexuality—still closeted in 1987—permeates the album. “Father Figure” and “I Want Your Sex” flirt with androgyny, their lyrical vagueness allowing broad identification. Conversely, “Hand to Mouth” incorporates quasi-religious imagery (*“Pray to the dollar / And heaven can wait”*[3]), critiquing materialism as false idolatry. --- ## Cultural Impact and Legacy ### Commercial Dominance and Critical Reappraisal *Faith* spent 51 weeks in the Billboard Top 10, yielding four US No. 1 singles—a feat unmatched by any British male soloist[4]. Its fusion of Black musical traditions (R&B, gospel) with white pop accessibility broke racial barriers, becoming the first album by a white artist to top Billboard’s Top Black Albums chart[4]. Though initially dismissed by some as lightweight, retrospectives now rank it among the 1980s’ finest works[1][4]. ### Influence on Contemporary Artists The Weeknd’s synth-pop noir, Bruno Mars’ retro-funk, and Troye Sivan’s queer pop all inherit *Faith*’s blueprint of carnal themes couched in sophisticated arrangements. Notably, Michael’s producer-as-auteur model presaged the rise of artist-producers like Pharrell Williams[3]. --- ## Critical Assessment: Strengths and Limitations ### Pros 1. **Genre Versatility**: Seamlessly integrates rock, soul, and jazz without losing pop immediacy[1][3]. 2. **Lyrical Depth**: Balances radio-friendly hooks with poetic introspection[2][3]. 3. **Production Innovation**: Pioneered techniques later adopted across R&B and hip-hop[1][4]. 4. **Vocals**: Michael’s husky tenor—equally convincing in falsetto and lower registers—remains unmatched[1]. ### Cons 1. **Dated Elements**: Some synth tones (“Hard Day”) now sound quintessentially ‘80s, limiting timelessness. 2. **Uneven Social Commentary**: Tracks like “Look at Your Hands” lack the nuance of later work (*Listen Without Prejudice*). 3. **Overreach in Controversy**: The “I Want Your Sex” backlash partially overshadowed the album’s subtler achievements[3]. --- ## Conclusion: The Anatomy of a Classic *Faith* endures not merely through nostalgia but via its fearless synthesis of artistic ambition and pop sensibilities. Michael’s mastery of studio craft, combined with lyrical candor, created a template for emotionally intelligent dance music. While its 1980s production flourishes occasionally anchor it to its era, the album’s exploration of love, identity, and self-belief remains universally resonant. In an age of fragmented genres and algorithmic playlists, *Faith* stands as a testament to the power of cohesive album artistry—a bold declaration of creative autonomy that continues to inspire.
Never really tried George before but really enjoyed this. Read about how controversial it was at the time; nowadays it seems so tame. Very 80s production coded too
Wow, is this album horny .... but banger after banger songs.
Excellent stuff. Faith and Father Figure are absolute toons. Simpsons: Yes
Side One is banger after banger, Side Two is a bit weaker but the last few songs are phenomenal and just a lovely way to finish the album.
Gotta love him.
The older I get, the more I like George Michael. What a fun album, just great 80's synthy pop, having the gall to have I Want Your Sex on the list not once but twice made me respect him big time. I wish I enjoyed all the songs as much as Faith, having a shorter tracklist is a bummer when none of the other songs hit that high, to be fair, I am more of a Fast Love part 1 and 2 guy.
What a collection of soulful pop songs. Faith kicks things off on such a high note. Father Figure is super emotional. I Want Your Sex is borderline comedic with how unsubtle it is. And the rest! The second half of the album seems to fall off a bit but man I enjoyed this sucker top to bottom
Ohhh yeah, let's go back to those middle school dances. Good stuff.
Some real great songs, poppy and energetic
Deserves a 4 just because of Father figure. This music has been stuck on my mind for the entire week
SEX!
Listened to Monkey way more than necessary, but the album was really good.
As much as I don’t want to admit it, I actually enjoyed this album. That doesn’t mean I loved it, but I appreciated it for what it is. It’s definitely a product of its time, but I can see why it had so much hype back in the ’80s. The music was clearly forward-thinking for its era. I don’t think I’ll be rushing back to it anytime soon, but I wouldn’t completely take it off the table either.
Rating: 8/10 One horny motherfucker that writes great pop songs.
Classic
fun and catchy! not normally the genre of music I listen to in my own time but I enjoyed myself and I think George Michael has a great voice and can write some really good songs
One of my sisters loved this so I, naturally for a younger sibling hated it reflexively. But it’s good, strong well written songs and he has a great voice
some solid tunes that I will definitely return to!! George had such a gorgeous voice 8/10
solo debut album from one of the guys from wham!, and what a debut it was. with sales totaling over 25 million, it became one of the biggest selling albums of all time and help cement george michael into one of the biggest selling acts of all time. this is a great album. the album’s first side (the one with the lion’s share of the hits) is vastly superior to the second side. having said that, one of the biggest hits on the album, “i want your sex”, is entirely too long with the second movement of the song being completely redundant… so much so that the radio edit ends after the first movement. don’t sleep on this one, kids. highlights: “faith” “one more try” “monkey”
Solid album
this made me uncomfortable however it was good
Not my cup of tea but deemed a classic by many
Great album. Great man. First time listening to a full album of his
reminds me of my mom. the first half was much stronger than the second half
Music from the radio when I was a teenager. I didn't listen to this, then, but I had an alright time with it now. The titlesong I've always liked and Father Figure is a keeper as well, proper, smooth 80ies pop. The whole thing is not without cringe, but I had fun here. A good 4.
It’s pop gold, honestly. Top tier.
If i had to choose a faith it would be this
Fun and frothy 80s. Grant made a comment that it sounded like George Michael was trying to do Prince which I think is a fair assessment but I had a lot of fun
Album 610 of 1001 George Michael - Faith (1987) Rating : 3.95 / 5 His break from the bubblegum pop of Wham!. A little pop, a little rock, a little R&B. Not something I'd normally pull off the shelf but no denying it is a great album, all around.
A good solid album. Enjoyable
Surprisingly enjoyed listening to this one. The upbeat 80's pop music was nostalgic even though I was never a fan of George Michael at the time. I forgot that he great voice.
I'd heard the hits, but probably would never have selected this album to listen to outside of this list. Surprisingly good.
It gives Michael Jackson rip-off, especially the beginning. Not necessarily a bad thing, though! An imitation of the King of Pop can still be very good music! The lyrics are icky, though. After "I Want Your Sex" I decided to just stop listening closely to the words, so as to not ruin my day. Great music, good vibes. Put it on in the background of a party, and hope no one knows George Michael music well enough to point it out. Favorite Song(s): Father Figure
A good album that’s mostly made up of hits. Kind of in the same boat as Thriller, but not quite as good.
George Michael's floor is 4 stars for me, so it's mostly decision if I think this is good or a great album. I think Liaten Without Prejudice is easily his best album, and Faith is just maybe a little to "pop and normal" for me. But still, such a talented musician.
This album is more consistent than I thought. I knew the singles, but I expected the rest to feel less cohesive. However, I really do believe the whole album is very good. I really enjoyed the listen, even if it may not become a part of my regular rotation. There is, of course, some nostalgia, too, but I firmly believe part of that is because Michael really helped define pop music at that time and still influences today.
For how much he talks about it, I hope George Michael finally got to have sex at some point. Four stars.
could i write poetry to this? n
This album gets better every time I listen to it. Even the dated production can't hold back George Michael's voice and the strength of the songs themselves. The record is a perfectly even mix of upbeat dance music and and searing ballads, each as funky or heart-wrenching as the last. In any other hands, a track like "Kissing a Fool" would come across as cliché and faux-lounge-lizard-y. Michael Bublé only wishes he could pull it off as well as GM does. Funny to remember that "I Want Your Sex" was super-controversial upon it's release, but now seems tame compared to the now-problematic lyrics that permeate the rest of the songs on side one. So, I guess I'll take away a half-star for that. But otherwise, this one is truly great.
I’d listen to this again
Much better than I expected. Best when he is soulful I Want Your Sex is way too long and maybe the only thing I did not enjoy.
A nice calm and lyrical album, I liked the songs Faith, Hard Day and Hand to Mouth the most. A good listen.
Pop del bueno.
I have to confess that I had no idea that this album is such a banger. Wow! Not really my genre but it is so powerful and strong that I listened to it twice.
Pretty decent 80s pop album, some bangers. Dude's got a great voice for sure 👍. Definitely some dated 80s production tho
I don’t think much about Boy George except the shitty Christmas song they always plan and the stellar Limp Bizkit cover of Faith. That being said, homeboy had heart and soul coming out the ass. Strong lyrics and sound. A few songs dragged on a bit, but overall I can finally see why GM is so well regard not just for pounding ass but as a lyricist as well.
His passion for romance and feeling love is very prevalent in his music and I appreciate the subtle and not so subtle ways he manages to embrace that. His soft voice attenuated with even softer accompanying music gives a certain appeal.
Fantastic voice and several really great songs. I wouldn't quite give this 5 stars, it's 4.5 really, but by comparison to the utter drivel that makes up two-thirds of this list, it's marvellous. Not as good as Listen Without Prejudice. Vol. 1, but very good.
My first thought about this album was that it's a British white guy trying to sound like Michael Jackson and Prince. By George Michael's own admission that's exactly what it is. The desperation to be taken seriously after years in Wham probably led to the blunt titles like 'I Want Your Sex'. Sublty won't do when you're trying to prove that your pop album isn't for kids. Having said all for that, George Michael does achieve much of what he set out to do and it was certainly reflected in sales of the album. Although his influences did it better, he did earn a place among them. The album is surprisingly good and manages to have its own identity, with a good energy and jazz elements that give it character. I could do without the rather bland 'One More Try' but I suppose the album had to have a ballad on there. 'I Want Your Sex', 'Look at Your Hands', and 'Monkey' are all great songs. I was fully prepared to dismiss it as an outdated pop flavor of the month and I'm genuinely surprised how good it was.
Amazing album! Among the best of the 80s.
Very nice 80's pop album.
George Michael is de muziek die ik via m’n moeder met de paplepel binnenkreeg tijdens lange ritten naar Italië op reis. Top herinneringen dus. Begint met een banger, Faith, misschien wel beter dan eender welk Wham lied. Daarna nog Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, Look at your Hands, Kissing a Fool ... Al bij al een top-pop album dus! 4.3!
Great tunes, great voice
I expected a boring pop record, but this was great.
Mooolto bello. La sua voce è da sogno e c'è una bella alternanza tra canzoni d'amore/vulnerabilità e canzoni più irriverenti. Non mi sento di dargli 5 ma ci è andato vicino. Rest in Peace George🩷
This was far from the genre of music I listened to at the time but as the years progressed I listened closer and now appreciate this work much more.
I wasn't super familiar with George Michael's work post-Wham, so I was pretty excited to hear what he did. I was pretty damn impressed! Really well written songs with some super groovy production. He's clearly going for a Prince sorta sound and vibe, but that's alright, I love Prince! Nothing absolutely groundbreaking, but a really fun listen with some ultra catchy songs.
A fantastically made album that shows George Michael as the butterfly emerging from the cocoon.
Great
It's aged so well. All 8/10 or higher apart from I want your sex, which was and still is rubbish.
Sweet and gentle.
4.25
Iconic George Michael album! Very good.
Amazing voice, solid 80s pop senses, and a nine minute song about wanting sex. What more does one need in life?
A complicated, tragic figure. But this man made some terrific music.
1 great song the others were ok
The first 4 tracks - Faith, Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, and One More Try, are exceptionally good, the remaining 6 are just standard late 80s Pop. If the whole album would be like the first 4, it would be an easy 5/5, the other tracks are more like 3/5, so I'm making this a 4/5 and call it a day.
Pretty much nothing but massive pop hits on this album, but I actually really like the few deep cuts too. I'm not crazy for some of the actual pop classics here (namely Monkey and I Want Your Sex), but still a very cool, well-rounded record with a lot of heat to it. 3.5/5
Very few images are so burned into my cultural memory of the 80s more than a cut man with a stubble beard shaking his ass in skinny jeans sporting an acoustic guitar slung on his back that he NEVER PLAYS. A pop masterpiece.
I'm about a 3.5 with this. The hits are great and the rest are ok. His voice is soooo smooth and silky. And I like that he ends the album with a timeless beautiful piano song.
Rest in Peace George🩷
So sad that he is gone, super super talented. I knew a couple of tracks but man for a debut album, it is amazing! Especially knowing how much of the production he was in control of, shows that his talents go further than just his phenomenal voice. Also, I've never noticed this before, but his vocals in FAITH sound so similar to Freddie Mercury! Favourites: Kissing a Fool Faith Father Figure Hand to Mouth Look at Your Hands
I already knew and loved Faith and Father Figure and was eager to find out how the rest of the album would play out. As expected, the other songs were good, but not as good as tracks 1 and 2. Still a fun listen, and I enjoyed listening to George actively avoid using gendered pronouns. I see you, George!
Hard
This one goes back to just before I really started listening to a lot of music. My brother had it in his cassette collection. I can still along with almost all the songs.
Solid work here. Top line melodies beautiful. Beats and arrangements do them justice. Beautiful vocals.
Is this not a gay man?
I will openly admit to being a massive George Michael fan. I bought this one as a kid on cassette and then promptly lost it at school so I’m guessing that was fate telling me to knock it off and chill out lol. While it’s a great debut album it’s not as deep as Listen Without Prejudice BUT! this is the ultimate GM sound. All that 80’s goodness and Wham! fun but the slow jams are a look into his lyrical style and ugh I cannot love this enough. I cant remember if he was Out at this stage or if that came later but once you look at his actual life the songs kinda make more sense. Dude was going through it for a long time and that pain comes out for sure. Fortunately he did it sexy as hell so it doesn’t drag, and is an honest to goodness great record. If you can get past the kinda corny production you’ll really like this one. Literally everything else except for underground music that came out in 1986-87 had this sound so deal with it lol because the heart and soul of his words far outweigh the cheesy music.
A lot of bangers, could've done without the weird ass sex-ed song.
solid 4.5
Oh fuck yes!! This was such a sensation when it came out. So many good pop songs. Everyone my age knows every word to Faith. Still holds up. This bitch could sing.
I've never really liked the song "Faith," and since this album opens with it, this didn’t start so great for me. I kept my expectations low for the rest. However, I was pleasantly surprised and ended up liking everything from track 2 onwards. I see why this is one of the best-selling albums ever. I liked "I Want Your Sex (part 1)" the best but it was all pretty awesome.
Strange as it sounds, I think that George Michael is *still* the most underrated recording artist of the 1980s and 1990s. Despite all the retrospective positivity of the last few years. This is *such* an album. Pop music at its very best.
Great jams. Some songs I hadn't heard before. Classic 80s synth and drum machine.
A surprising debut at the time, coming out of Wham!. It stands the test of time. A great opener, followed by 9 more mature tracks, strings and horns backed-up by the 80s drum sound.
Pretty great
C’mon this is good!
This album had me smiling all the way
This was probably my mom's jam back in the day. I dig the middle eastern-sounding synths on "Father Figure". "I Want Your Sex" made me cringe and made it hard to keep a straight face at work. The sound effects in "Monkey" had me dying too. Overall though, this album is filled with quality, unapologetically 80s pop songs. It's a fun listen. -1 for not having "Careless Whisper" though. Favorite tracks: Faith Father Figure Hard Day Look at Your Hands Monkey
I liked this album more than I thought I would. I like a lot of disc 2 more than disc 1. George has the spunk of Michael Jackson with the horniness of Beyoncé. I only ever knew Careless Whisper so only had good things to say of course but this album solidifies it. Favorite Song: Fantasy 7/10
Another day another diva. This album is so 80’s it’s comical, but you won’t catch me laughing at George Michael. His voice is so stellar. ALSO this album is a great example of how artists should never be boxed into genres, as part of the reason it even sounds the way it does was because WHAM! was (wrongfully) relegated to teeny-bopper status and Michael wanted badly to move away from that space. Then he created this for his solo debut, and it contains inspirations from so many genres. Well done, George Michael.
George Michael walked so Kim Petras could hit 120mph on the highway. Highly recommend watching the music videos for I Want Your Sex; it really ties everything together. 8.8/10
Mmm Fav songs: Faith Hand to mouth ^-^
3 great songs. 1 decent song and a bunch of filler. 4 stars?
pretty solid dance music.
Cool
There is so much good in this music. GM's step away from Wham was welcome and unexpected. He was a music story teller, and I still enjoy this album. But then came Listen Without Prejudice, and I was blown away. Hope that album is on the list...
George Michael! Fun pop stylings and some great high notes on One More Try. Monkey is fun. A Last Request is real creepy.
I Want Your Sex being 9 minutes long is a goddamn crime. Otherwise this album is peak 80s. Honorable mention of Father Figure - best song in this album.
George Michael proves he’s so much more than half of Wham!. Pulsing club bangers meld seamlessly with heartfelt ballads.
80s pop goodness
This album has a surprising amount of singles, which I guess makes sense considering the timeline of this album releasing after the commercial success of Wham! There really is quite a fusion of musical genres here, with rock, funk and even some soul mixed in throughout. Very... sexually-charged too, if that wasn't already a given with George Michael.
I've already heard most of the album; it's good, Michael was a real talent
Great album. Very much enjoyed
Perfect timing in my life for me to to really appreciate this album. Numerous hits. In my opinion, it is George’s best work. Kissing a Fool is a beautiful piece. I’m not sure that I had heard it prior. I really like how the makes me feel.
George Michael was always a head scratcher to me. When he was with Wham! I thought he was just some goofy pop artist. When he released Faith, I was a teenager, and really confused. This is an intense album, and I've come to terms with the fact that Michael was an incredibly attractive man, and that even though I'm cis, I can admire and enjoy beautiful men.
Fun album, like his solo better than Wham
t a bueno
Two albums this week that were huge when I was a Senior. Other than the hits, I've never listened this one. I didn't like Wham and I didn't like this back then. Now it's just nostalgia.
Really impressive and enjoyable release. Faith, Father Figure and One More Try stand high above the remaining track and only Monkey serves as the track i need to skip. It has a touch too much 80's synth on it, but his soulful and passionate voice and ability to craft some great pop songs make it easy to enjoy.
First listening to complete album. Some songs have held up well, others not so much.
I didn't want to like this album but it really wasn't so bad. Really dancy and good mood music somehow
excellent album - like it very much
George Michael war noch nie einer meiner Favorites. Die Hits sind phantastisch, für den Rest bin ich nicht Fan genug.
Most songs were released as singles. So I heard most of this from radio.
I know this album was huge when I was a kid, but I never really listened to it because it wasn't what my friend group was into. So it was a bit of a surprise when I played it and knew the first 3 tracks. It's amazing what you absorb from the radio without realizing it. I find it funny that he left a boy band and made something different with this, only for future boy bands to copy the style.
I like this more than i thought i would!!
Bit of a wannabe Michael Jackson vibe here but George does a good job of defining his own take on the genre. If you have a chance, watch the videos for this album. They provide a nice snapshot of 80's musical art and a layer of narrative that supplements the vinyl well.
This album is better than I remembered.
I feel like this is betraying my fellow people… please forgive me 🙏🏻
Lekker 80s
Liked almost all of it.
This is spectacular. I love that there’s a 9-minute song about wanting to have sex and it has absolutely no subtlety or innuendo. Honestly, it feels very earnest. “Faith” is a classic and I might like “Father Figure” even more. Great song. Love that rhythm in the beat. The rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to the fun of the opening three tracks but George Michael’s sexy, sultry vocals carry the other songs. (“Monkey” is hilarious and awesome though.) Everything is well produced too.
8/10 - bunch of bangers few slow but good great album - reminds me of Michael Jackson
There are so many great George Michael songs on this album, and his voice is fantastic. My biggest issue with this album is that most of the songs go on for like a minute longer than they really need to. But there are so many great, all time classic songs here it’s hard to be that annoyed by the song length.
Just a fun album. I was impressed to learn Michael wrote, produced, and performed multiple instruments on nearly every track. While not complex musically, it does the simple things very well.
4/5
George Michael nunca decepciona. Então som é pedrada da boa!
Faith - 9/10 Father Figure - 8.5/10 I Want Your Sex - 8/10 One More Try - 7/10 Hard Day - 8.5/10 Hand to Mouth - 8/10 Look at Your Hands - 8/10 Monkey - 9/10 Kissing a Fool -8.5/10 A Last Request - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 82/100
Justin Timberlake ca 2006 ville ønske at han lød lige så liderlig som George Michael gør her. Jeg var vild med det, produktionen havde aget bedre end jeg havde regnet med
Liderligt!
Hard to separate the quality of the music from the wonderful nostalgia. So many hits on this album - would they be as great without the memories that accompany them? I think so.
Fun!
Now we're fucking talking. Jumping right in with Faith, what a start. Well I guess it would be nice if I could touch Wiggins' body. I want his sex - and I'd also want it to last 9 minutes and 17 seconds precisely. The album overall is relatively short and sweet - unfortunately it does dip a little towards the end but it's still amongst the best we've heard so far.
What a nice voice and what a nice man, I bet his nan was proud of him and hopefully was already dead by the time of the toilet incident.
if I had an ounce of this man's charisma I'd lead a much better life
A true breakout album. George Michael shows his pop roots but adds a perfect mix of rock and roll. And his passion for each song really comes thru.
So many mega hits.
Love Georgie 💖
Pretty stellar album, and being one of the best-selling albums of all time, I think it definitely deserves inclusion on this list. There are some dated sounds/lyrics, which might be keeping me from giving this 5 stars (For real "I want Your Sex, Pt 1 & 2" is a ridiculous song, with some borderline cringe lyrics, but somehow it hangs together and ends in a joyous fashion) Still really strong album.
Faith was on regular rotation during my pre-teens - I was never quite sure who was the bigger fan, my mum or my dad. Re-listening today, while it still holds nostalgia, there are a few filler tracks, but overall a solid contemporary pop album.
I was never a huge George Michael fan. I really like the singles and listening to him in small doses is fun. And I appreciated that this was great pop music. Apparently my view has not changed over the decades. The first couple of songs on here., I was gung-ho and excited and then my interest waned - possibly when smooth gave way to sleaze - but sort of picked up again towards the end. It’s probably a solid 3.5. I will give him his due, he knew how to compose a pop song: the melody, the hook, the structure, the production – it’s all there. Some days it’s great, somedays I’m happy to leave it alone.
I'm not sure how to comment on this album. I do like it and understand the controversy about it more so now being a parent. I have good memories of hanging with friends while listening to this album. Many favorites played on the radio and in the clubs.
I didn't realize so many of George Michael's hits were a product of this album. He's an impressive vocalist, for sure, and he's an excellent producer and writer — this is a solid pop record. As a listener, I can only take so much before I'm ready for another flavor, and that's partly due to the '80s-ness sound of this record. So I guess, at the end of the day, I'm more impressed with this superbly crafted album than I am a fan.
The first three songs just kill it, which I always thought was unfair to the other songs on the album. But those crooning songs that come later (Kissing a Fool, A Last Request) certainly show off George Michael's smooth vocals. While George Michael is no Prince he DID write, produce, and play nearly all of the instruments on this album. If you haven't watched the Wham! documentary, do yourself a favor. While it's a great story about the band and GM's musical evolution, it's an even greater story about friendship, love, and acceptance. My love for George Michael grows the older I get.
Really good
George Michael was the horniest man I have ever listened to, expect for maybe Freddie Mercury. MAYBE.
Good set of songs. Shame we lost such a brilliant talent.
was looking forward to this. did not disappoint!
"Faith" is the debut solo album by English singer George Michael. Michael wrote and produced every song except one in which he co-wrote with David Austin. He also played a lot of the instruments himself. He was tired of the bubble-gum pop reputation from Wham! and wanted more "black" inspired pop R&B similar to Michael Jackson and Prince. The lyrics were introspective and generally about personal relationships. The album was a massive commercial success hitting #1 in the US and UK and was the first album by a white artist to hit #1 on the Billboard Top Black Album Charts which Michael was the most proud. It also has sold roughly 25 million copies, won The Grammy for album of the year and had widespread critical acclaim. An church organ playing Wham!'s "Freedom" opens "Faith." It then turns pop rockabilly with an acoustic Bo Diddly riff. Michael goes soft with a whisper and then goes loud. Very catchy pop song. You have to have faith in something that's real. The end sort of reminds me of "Footloose." "Father Figure" is a soulful R&B ballad. Synths, a drumbeat. Michael goes soft and loud again. Solid gospel backing vocals. About a partner being older. The first single (of the seven) released was "I Want Your Sex (Part 1 & 2)." The first part is rhythm heavy with a synth melody. The second part has horns and is more club-like. I think we know what the song is about. "One More Try" is slower, soulful, a ballad. Michael is crooning, emotional-his best vocal performance on the album. A man who pushes a lover away and ends up with that person. The second side has a few funk songs. "Hard Day" is bass heavy with a clunky 80's beat. "Monkey" continues the 80's funk. Very 80's synths. Echoing vocals. A jangly guitar. About a relationship with an addict. And why not throw in some jazz which is what Michael does in the closing ballad "Kissing a Fool." A piano. A sax. He's describing a break-up. One of the strengths in this album is variety - funk, R&B, jazz, soul, rock and pop. There were a number of times I heard other artists including Prince, Bo Diddley, New Order and "Footloose" but the overall album is definitely Michael's. The synths and beat sounded very 80's on some of the songs especially on the second side. The first side is hit after hit. I don't remember even attempting to listen back in 1987 (I didn't need to with seven singles) but overall this is a very, very solid album.
Yeah it’s alright.I like faith. It’s kinda forgettable but nice to listen to.
Is he the most handsome man to ever walk this planet? RIP - 4 stars.
Back when this came out, if a song was "on the radio", I tended to dismiss it. Especially if it came from a member of a super-poppy group like Wham! Listening to this again, however (and with some hindsight due to George's other solo albums), this is better than I originally gave it credit. 4 stars.
This album is hoooooorny. But it's got some fantastic songs too.
Wowee. Went through quite the rollercoaster of reactions on this. First two songs were utterly insufferable. But as it lent into the disco-anthem section, and the sun was setting over kunanyi on my ride home, I was feeling it. It dips into the self-indulgent and is grating at times, but alot of it is very well produced, vocal performances are buttery, and has just enough diversity in tracks that I didn't tire of it Fav track: Kissing a fool or Look at your hands 3.5/5
Lots of hits on this album
I am quite familiar with George Michael's stuff from his time with Wham! but never delved into his solo stuff much. Of course, I know the hits, like Faith and Father Figure, I just never took the time to go any further into his catalog. This album drips 80's pop, from the synth heavy sound, to the in your face sexuality, even to the cover photo. The large crucifix earring and leather jacket screams 80's sex icon! Even just by listening to this album I feel like I've been banged by George Michael. I may have ear herpes. None of this is to say that this album is terrible, actually quite the opposite! This was a fantastic record!! It has a very Prince/Michael Jackson feel to it, and I think maybe it kind of got out shined by those heavy hitters a bit, but it is still great. Overall, I was happy to delve a little deeper into George Michael's catalog of music today, and will definately add some of his stuff to my more frequent listening playlists. Favourite songs: Faith, Monkey, Look at Your Hands, Hard Day, I Want Your Sex, Hand to Mouth, Father Figure Least favourite songs: One More Try, Kissing a Fool 4/5
Holy shit, I've been transported back to the skate deck and I'm 9 years old! I love this. Spent most of the rest of the day listening to 80s classics
Yeah, I guess I just love George Michael’s angel voice. Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, and Kissing A Fool are super 80’s bops. What a strong debut.
Enjoyed way more than expected! Felt sexy and powerful working out to this. Fun album very catchy hooks and rhythms.
A classic album with some good hits. It reminds me of the music my mam would play. So good it made me Bi
What is there to dislike? Ok, so it sounds very 'of its time' in places (e.g. I want your sex), but his voice is wonderful.
Great up until the last track
When George Michael died I basically went into mourning and listened to “Jesus to a Child” a million times for the next year. I love him. This isn’t my favourite work of his, but it’s still very very good pop. The last half of the album is much weaker than the first, but it’s all good. Best tracks: Faith, Father Figure, I Want Your Sex, One More Try
First two tracks are all timers. Father Figure is an incredible song. The rest: ah I didn’t dig. 4 stars tho still
Well we know what Georg Michael used to think about loads 👀 Saved tracks: Faith, Hard Day, Hand To Mouth
Now finally an album that is a great listen.Love George he was awesome in Wham and awesome solo. He was an 80s icon in music for sure. Always have his songs in my Playlist
I was so relieved to not have to listen to punk, I didn’t realize how good this album would actually be!! It’s so good! Of course I know George Michael from his hits like Faith and I Want Your Sex, but didn’t know just how great his voice was! I could play this album on repeat for hours. Listen again: absolutely! Purchase for my collection: maybe. I wouldn’t buy brand new, but would definitely purchase from the bargain bin if I saw it! Favourite Song: Father Figure Worst Song: I Want Your Sex (too mainstream and I have to change it when the kiddo is around lol)
Ca helmingurinn af þessari plötu er tær snilld. Restin er þokkaleg uppfylling.
This is so much better than I remembered. Doesn't let up all the way through, and is just a great set of pop tunes.
Such a great voice this man has! The album is quitte good, it’s starts off great with faith and father figure. I want your sex is not his best work but okay, after that it gets better again. When I am in the mood for this kind of music I will try some of his other albums. Favourite songs: - Faith - Father figure - One more try
Pleasantly surprised the first time round. Second time less so. Musically it's got some pretty mental sounds - swear I heard some sort of electronic wobbleboard at some points - but not sure the songs are catchy enough. Saying that, if Prince had made I want your s.e.x. we'd all be racing about it. 3.5
Banger
I knew a lot of the songs, but I don’t think that I’ve ever listened to this the whole way through. Pretty good pop music, but I don’t like the slower songs as much. Still worth a spin. B+
Last Christmas (not on this album) puts a damper on my George Michael appreciation. This album is absolutely a great first half.
I expected to give this a 4, but I didn't think it'd be as close to a 5 as it is for me. I don't think I can give it a 5, but it's pretty dang close. Certainly an interesting experience in terms of lyrics. A lot of bops on here. My favourite songs were Hand to Mouth, Kissing a Fool, and Monkey.
One of the horniest albums that I think I've ever heard. An incredible performance by an absolute legend. 4/5. Favorite Track: Faith
Is this a culturally redeeming and epic showcase of musicianship? Fuck no. Is it a time capsule and a postcard picture of iconic 80's pop music? Absolutely!!! The guy could write a catchy song with the best of 'em. This stuff was on repeat everywhere at the time.
Solid solid pop album
I’m not a pop music fan, but this is a very good album.
Very good album with some classic songs
4/5
A fun album but weird lyrics… I’m sure I’ll revisit it.
<>
Holy moly this caught me completely off guard. Insanely strong pop effort with pristine production and absolutely catchy tunes delivered by a silky smooth vocal. Everything feels so effortless but incredibly polished at the same time. The jazzy feeling on the closer 'Kissing a Fool' did feel a bit out of place and was just too sugary for my taste.
I day me and george michael drove around town, making wringvturns, rushing to do returns, in time to get to school carpool. I thought george Michael’s album was pretty amazing, but then sometimes I thought, you know george michael, I want your sex extended version is some weird wild stuff.
Definitely a gay man trying to sing about sexuality without outing himself. His voice is beautiful.
A great album. It shows off his voice and skilled songwriting and blows up a few of the digs at Wham. In 1987, just before we got a resurgence in 50s-style songs from guys like Chris Isaak and then the La Bamba soundtrack, George Michael put out a single with a Bo Diddley guitar riff and showed he had way more tricks than the jitterbug.
