Willie Nelson is probably best known for his authentic style of outlaw country music, so it was something of a surprise when he teamed up with Booker T Jones to record an album of great American songbook classics from Hoagy Carmichael to Irving Berlin to George Gershwin. The result is really rather affecting, with Nelson’s slightly quavery voice adding emotion to well worn songs with music from Jones on organ and piano complementing him perfectly. Just goes to show that you should never pigeonhole people into single genres.
I liked the willie nelson stardust album much more than i thought I would tbh it's just him diving headfirst into a collection of American pop standards. It sounds like it shouldn’t work, but it really does. His gentle, weathered voice brings a new kind of honesty to songs like Georgia on My Mind and Blue Skies, making them feel lived-in rather than polished. Just some really nice takes on some classic songs and I've always loved the sound of trigger his guitar it really does have a very unique sound which i like The arrangements are soft and understated, letting Willie’s phrasing and guitar do the talking. It’s a warm, mellow listen that somehow manages to feel entirely his own. Stardust proves that great songs, and a great interpreter, can put something into these classic songs and make them sound 'new'.
So mellow man
Willie is sooo not my thang BUT this was such a pleasant surprise. I probably won't listen again but now I get his fandom.
That's not my taste in music, but pleasant music
One of my favourite cover albums. Willie Nelson nails the laid back, acoustic, twangy sound that fits so well in the slow, contemplative jazz standards he covers. Not a bad song on this, and perfect for any quiet time spent alone. Best Tracks: - Stardust - Georgia On My Mind - Unchained Melody Worst Tracks: N/A Rating: 8.5/10
Beautiful croons <3
Just a solid album from a good artist. Not much more to say about it.
A nice surprise
Pretty solid listen Reminds me of all the songs they used to play before/after punk shows. Willie is an original punk!
It's a 4 but only because it's Willie
Had no idea all these classics were on one album. Hate the production on it, but the material is so good it doesn't matter.
Not a ton of "new" music on this, but some really great renditions of some old favorites. Probably my 2nd favorite recording of Georgia On My Mind, and a quality recording of Blue Skies. Honestly though, I think the less-lauded 2nd half of the album is more my speed. You get to really hear Willie be Willie, both good and bad.
I wouldn't think that I would love that album but damn that was really good those acoustic parts are amazing I loved it really like the solo in "Blue Skies" was awesome and I loved every songs in general except "September Song" but "Georgia On My Mind" was really beautiful and probably my favorite one.
The cover art is amazing. Very good song covers too. This is the country music gateway drug for me Edit Apr 27 2026: 5 --> 4
I love this man and his beautiful voice
I don’t think I’ve ever really listened to a Willie album before, but I was surprised by how much I liked his voice.
Ultimate chill. Makes the days worries slip away and reminds you that, in the end, everything will be all right
Extremely chill, good for a rainy day
Soooo calm.
Not exactly my cup of tea, but very good! I liked it
This was one of the records my mom bought after the divorce, along with a lot of Neil Diamond, so it is woven into my upbringing. It's a beauty of a standards collection. I was going to list the Willie albums I prefer, ones that lean on his original material, but then "Blue Skies" came on, and I thought why would I want anything else? It stops just outside the city limits of treacle, elevating the tiredest of songs with a weary, elegant resignation. It's making something out new of what's left. If you can't open your heart to his version of "All of Me" you may want to have a doctor confirm you have one. This version of "Unchained Melody" is what plays should our wretched souls ascend to heaven at the end. So yeah, essential. Produced by his neighbor Booker T (of and the MGs), recorded in another friend's house, with the harmonica recorded in a shower stall. Also I love that he insisted on keeping Susanna Clark's (wife of songwriter Guy Clark) signature on the cover painting.
I'm a little torn by the inclusion of this, an album of well-known standards, from the artist who wrote songs as good as "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground," "Whiskey River" and "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys." It was even controversial in its day, coming from the figurehead of Outlaw Country. And yet, I cannot deny this is very good — especially "September Song."
Never even knew this album existed but how special it is.
If you have a Willie Nelson album in your collection, it probably should be this one.
Never listened to Willy before but he blew my tiny mind
Not my go to genre of music, but relaxing and soothing none the less. Guitar sounded warm and I found myself mesmerized by his voice. Felt like i was near a campfire or on a porch on a summer night and my grandpa is singing to me
Love Booker T, but it didn’t do it for me
Very lovely listen, throughly enjoyed.
bluegrass covers of classics by a pro, no complaints
OK, this album is actually really chill in a great way. Go Willie go
I do wish more artists did this. I understand that a label might blowup its hq before it lets any artist that isn't someone at Willie's success level try to release a record of just covers, but a boy can dream. Maybe if there was a publication that paid for the recording an EP of artists covering songs they love. The triple J "Like a Versions" are nice, but I want it in an album format, not a playlist of youtube videos or a 14 hour playlist. Do it like a KidzBop album. It really feels like Willie's love letter to other songwriters. He's in dialogue with other great artists. Jackie Chan boxset you know what Im sayin. While paying ode, Willie reworks some classic pop cuts to create an intimate atmosphere. This record spills over with love as a fan, and from one fan to another, thank you Willie. 7.8/10 Favorite Song: Moonlight in Vermont
Lovely way to start a rainy Sunday morning. Willie is a treasure. I don't know that I would revisit this often but it was wonderful in the moment.
Willie's voice on these jazz standards is perfect, although his own songs usually are better.
Nice chill vocal, chill vibe, 6.9/10
This was actually pretty enjoyable. Not a fan of country at all. But this definitely had less of that country-y sound than most. I didn't mind it.
4/5
It was a slow and quiet album, which isn't a bad thing. I think it would be nice to listen to this while trying to go to bed or something.
Nap time music
Really nice. will listen more
Easy and relaxing. Willie is a national Album 5/1001
Stardust showcases Willie's talent as a versatile and expressive vocalist, in spite of limited vocal range. The strongest tracks on this album are "All of Me", "Blue Skies", "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" - the more uptempo tracks in general.
If that's what country sounds like, then call me a fan. Really nice cover album by Willie Nelson, great choice of songs, beautiful voice, solid effort.
A very pleasant surprise. I have no knowledge of Willie Nelson’s music - but definitely had preconceptions! A quiet, thought-provoking album. Very clean sounds and not overly orchestrated. An album for peaceful, reflective times.
Good
Completely out of character for Willie Nelson, Stardust is an album of pop standards but served with his signature authentic sense of storytelling. His rendition of 'Blue Skies' is phenomenal.
Stardust is a great example of Willie Nelson doing what he does best—making any song his own. It’s pretty cool to hear his laid-back, soulful take on classic pop standards like “Georgia on My Mind” and “Blue Skies.” His phrasing and delivery are so relaxed it feels like he’s singing just for you on a porch somewhere with a glass of something strong in hand. The arrangements are stripped down, but that’s part of the charm—nothing gets in the way of Willie’s voice or the emotion behind each lyric. It’s not your typical country record, but it works surprisingly well. You can tell this was a passion project, and it’s one of those albums that grows on you the more you listen. A solid, timeless listen front to back.
Cover songs done by Willie with a Willie spin. Mello gold right there.
actually good for a country music
80% Best: Stardust; Georgia On My Mind; September Song; Don’t Get Around Much Anymore Must-Hear? Sure
Willie Nelson is covering his faves. Pop rather than country, lovely, cosy voice. Super charming.
Beautiful and inspired. Willie Nelson really knows how to create a cohesive sound without immense production. 4/5 only because these are covers.
If I were to rate this exclusively based on how much I enjoy the music, I'd probably give it a 3. It's pleasant. It doesn't exactly transfix me, but it's just nice to listen to. But there are two things that bump it up to a 4. First off, it really is better than the sum of its parts. Altogether, it's just such a comfy album. Like a warm hug. I'm not familiar with most of these songs, but I don't even need to be told that they're standards. They have this kind of nostalgia to them. Secondly, in reading about this album, it took some gall on Willie's part to go through with this product. He was already the king of outlaw country by this point, and he pointedly went against his label - ONCE AGAIN - to record an album of pop standards. Willie just doing figure eights around these suits. Gotta respect it. Fav tracks: Stardust, Georgia on my Mind, Unchained Melody, September Song
I want to like this album more because it's beautifully recorded, exquisitely performed and a wonderful batch of songs. At times the way the nylon string guitar sounds makes my hairs stand on end. But I'm the end it's a bit too reverent, too lush and too safe. I still really dig his version of "Blue Skies". I can't fully give it 4 stars... But close enough to warrent it on the app 7.9 ★★★½
Willie’s voice is so pleasing, I can listen to him sing anything. That twang puts a sweet spin on this collection of standards. He really slows the tempo, savoring the lyrics so that the songs really feel lived-in.
One of the better “sounding” Nelson records that I’ve listened to, Stardust is a solid collection of pop standards covered Willie style. It makes for an enjoyable listen. Willie is a good enough songwriter that it’s hard for me to not wish I was listening to songs he wrote, but hearing Willie make these songs his own is well worth the journey.
Great!
Willie does great, but this album didn't really resonate with me. Good overall, but just didn't really connect.
Beautiful.
Listening to this album has taught me one thing: I have underrated Willie Nelson. Growing up in the '90s, Willie has always just been "that stoner country singer." In fact, the only album I've listened to his before this one was the reggae album he released in the mid-2000s. That wasn't a bad album by the way, but it didn't really change my perception of Willie. In all honesty, this shouldn't have changed my opinion of him either. It's an album of covers which isn't my favorite way to judge an artist, but when I think about the crooners like Sinatra and Crosby I guess it makes sense that some of the all-time greats do just do standards. All things considered I still didn't know what to expect from this album but I was pleasantly surprised. I found myself listening and thinking, "Is this actually good?" It's not like Willy's voice is anything spectacular. It's smooth, it's subtle, but it works. And, it especially works on an album like this, where he can really put his own style into these classics. I didn't love every song, and I'm not here to say that this is a 10 out of 10 masterpiece or anything like that. But, it did make me realize that I've probably been sleeping on Willie Nelson. I honestly didn't even know that he was this major star in the 70s, and I certainly didn't know that this album of covers was as big of a hit as it was. Overall, a solid listen that probably earns a few extra marks from me from just exceeding expectations, but his arrangements of these standards truly are quite enjoyable.
I'm hooked. Honestly it had me at "Stardust... by Willie Nelson... Its ten songs consist entirely of pop standards that Nelson picked from among his favorites" Saving it to my favorites
Enjoyed this one more than I expected, having only known Willie Nelson for his political songs and the "Roll me up and smoke me" one. Had no idea he is actually a serious musician too, and a good one at that! Will definitely be coming back to this.
I think I would have hated a cover album of pop songs if it were put out by most artists. However, Willie Nelson is not most artists, and his fucking voice makes this shit work so well that I never question it while listening. Just exquisite 4/5
For most of my life, I dug Willie Nelson as a person more than a dug his music. And maybe I’m just getting old, but this album soothes my cynical soul. Beautiful.
Strong title track, moonlight in Vermont is beautiful. Good easy listening. Proper chill out album.
I love Willie! * Nelson I mean ** Willie Nelson
God I love me some good solid Willie. It was a lil short, but size doesn't matter, it's the motion of the ocean
Such a beautiful melancholic album to ride to work to on a breezy morning, a blue colour pallet morning with a blue colour pallet album cover GIVE ME YOUR WILLIE WILLIE
Living legend, but a little sleepy. Not into it.
i know u guys are gonna jump me, but i think this is a very strong 4, i’m just not feeling a five here. i love it a lot, but i don’t know. that’s me man
The man The myth The Willie
Normally not really a fan of cover albums (or country) but this is very gorgeous
Willie Nelson is a legend and this album was fantastic! I definitely need more Willie Nelson in my life.
literal suena un poco como escuchar clásicos mirando las estrellas, muy lindo ❤
Didn't realize how great his cover songs are
another country album to get me to change my opinion on country music. Very cozy, can’t complain.
I really enjoyed what Willie did here. While many of the songs were slower, they all this romantic flare to them that really just made want to slow dance with the one you love in the kitchen at 2 in the morning. Covering so many classics with his iconic voice also made this is an enjoyable listen. Probably won’t listen straight through again, but I was smiling through the entire thing.
Me gustó, todo parece el soundtrack perfecto para un domingo o un día lluvioso, buen sonido, concreto, no va a ser mí favorito pero me sorprendí disfrutándolo
Nice mellow willie
I was surprised how much I liked this record. I am hungover and maybe that played a role in my feelings. This was very chill and I even listened to it a second time. Lots of cover songs - great stuff.
Gorgeous album of "classic pop" songs like the elementary school favorite "Blue Skies". A mix of classic pop, jazz, soul and country. A bit front-heavy, as the schtick wears its course. Still 4/5
I don’t know if all the songs are covers but a lot are. And they’re lovely. 4/5
It was good but i don't think it's as influential on me as the other albums provided
Canciones antiguas pero cantadas como baladas, interesante.
Gute Songs dabei. Stardust, all of me .. unchained melody. Gutes country, folk album.
Willie had a joint, a guitar and a dream. I’m glad he achieved them because our ears are better off for them. I usually hate cover albums but this one grabbed me from the jump and simply refused to let me go.
wasn’t a big fan of country music before this. favorite track: stardust other picks: georgia on my mind, all of me, moonlight in vermont
The most I’ve been able to enjoy a country album
Extrem entspanntes Album - sicher super zum Abschalten Sehr melancholisch - Old school Country
reincarnated into a silly goofy dog under the starry sky in the countryside
I like his cover of unchained melody, v tender.
Enjoyable listen with fun songs and interesting covers. The record feels fresh and Willie does a great job at catching the emotions in the songs, like unchained melody, be it in a country style, which was great. The record does lack in originality, as the record is only made of covers. Nonetheless the new style make up for it and overall the album is just fun and relaxing to listen to. Favorite song: September song. Overall score: 7.2/10.
This is like I'm hanging out by the campfire with some old cowboys just jamming to some tunes. Legitimately surprised by how much I am enjoying this.
What a lovely album! There's a reason these songs are considered standards and Willie does a great job interpreting them. Favorites: Stardust, Don't Get Around Much Anymore Would I listen to it again: Yes
What a pleasant and optimistic lil album
This was really good. Not really a big Willie Nelson guy typically (but maybe I should be?). Just very pleasant, mellow jams. On the other hand, this album doesn't have a ton of tonal contrast, but it was pleasant as I did my work. Highlights: Blue Skies Georgia on my Mind--Is this an original take? I don't think so, but its a great standard performed well Don't Get around much anymore and someone to watch over me is a very strong finish for the album
lindíssimo som de violão e um maravilhoso opener, seguido de algumas faixas que já não sobressaíram tanto assim pra mim mas é relaxante e bonito o suficiente pra eu sei lá se pá colocar quando não tiver ideia do que ouvir
There's a time and a place for this album and the covers are respectful
Lyssnade på denna på ett tåg där jag satt och tittade ut på en solnedgång över ett vinterlandskap, så det var onekligen helt perfekta förutsättningar för en bra upplevelse. Gillar Willie generellt också, så det blir en stabil fyra.
Maybe the first full country album I've listened to. Honestly, a good introduction to the genre proper. (also, OK, the album's sound really was exactly like the title, OK, nice)
Interesting sound, but personally not a big fan of folk-type. Apparently not original songs either so eh.
07/01/24 I have never listened to Willie Nelson and it was a chilled album, erring on the side of boring.
Great album cover, nice calm stuff here. Pleasantly surprised
i didnt know these songs were covers because i've never heard the originals but they're definitely willie's songs to me now
old folksy country sound, liked this well enough
Wonderful.
I, at first was like "Nah, I don't want to listen to a Willie Nelson album... come on!" Then I did. What? This album is not some down on the luck hard drinkin' gamblin man album... it is .. I don't even think it is really country per se... more bluesy or contemporary... with a somewhat country vibe... but still. Damn. This album is... To be honest? Great! It blew me away. It took like no time to for it to suddenly be over and I could have been fine listening longer. He does a bunch of covers and they are superb. This was honestly a shocker for me. I had like zero expectations and got a deep, emotional crooner just letting it go. Wow!
Made me cry multiple times. Four stars.
How relaxing is this album. Not too long either, a nice in and out experience. I can really see myself listening again to fit a calm mood.
The fact that Willie Nelson made such a lovely album should be all the argument you need that weed should be universally legal.
Calm, quiet and relaxing but surprisingly not in a stoner kind of way.
Willie Nelson and Booker T. Jones here pair up for what is literally a heist or a hold up : recording classic jazz and broadway standards for an album that would help Nelson cross over from his outlaw country audience to more general ones. It worked fine for him in the charts, and decades later, the LP is still pleasant to listen to -- very dignified, and yet also unobtrusive and unpretentious, even if not particularly challenging. The instrumentation is top-notch of course, Nelson hits all the right buttons as a vocal performer, and the familiarity one can have with those songs can help you appreciate the whole thing for what it is. To this day, I'm still wondering if this album is not a little too "safe", though. But if you picture yourself listening to these songs under a starry vault, as suggested by the record's artwork, maybe you'll fall under its many charms... 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums 8.5/10 for more general purposes (5 + 3.5) Number of albums left to review: around a hundred, as I've gone over the 1000 line and this generator is including albums from all editions of the book Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 443 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 266 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 322
Willie!! I didn't realize!! Incidentally, harmonica solos are my weakness 😍
Festivus came early this year as this is a traditional album (along with Billy Joel) to be played that day. This I know of course from watching the entire series of Seinfeld on DVD with the added "notes about nothing" extra info. And the Festivus Wikipedia page or something. Anyway I like it
I’ve always loved this album. One of the original vinyls that I got from my grandfather that got me into collecting. I didn’t really know anything about this album when I got it. I had just picked it out cuz of Willie but then I happened to watch this Netflix documentary thing and they were discussing this album a lot. Apparently this was peak Willie Nelson in his outlaw country phase and the studio kept pushing him to do more of the same and he was like, nah, ima do my own thing, and made this album of old standards, which by this point, was pretty worn out and people weren’t really doing anymore. What came out of it is a really no nonsense, zero frills album that on the surface you could argue that this is a pretty boring, nothing spectacular kind of thing. What I’ve come to realize though is that is kind of the point. It gives enough spin on the original song to make it uniquely Willy but still honors those classic compositions by just letting the songwriting speak for itself and prove why these songs are considered standards.
Matt 1.0 first introduced this album to me. It was on in the background while we were having a conversation. The conversation was constantly interrupted as I stopped part way into a song to ask "wait, is this?..." and Matt would respond with a "Yep!". This is a perfect way to do an album of cover songs. Willie really makes each of these his own. It's not perfect, but you can't help to love recognizing a song 40 seconds in. Right before the first chorus is about to start. A great album, and I'm glad I know about it.
This was the relaxing comedown that I needed after particularly uneasy start to the morning. Willie Nelson's voice is like no other. It's almost spoken word, yet still so soulful.
4/5 This was my first time listening to Willie Nelson, and the album had a warm, mellow vibe that perfectly matched the December mood. The length felt just right, and it was a soothing, enjoyable listen overall. The subtle jazz influence was a standout for me, especially as someone who loves jazz. That said, a bit more variation in tone or tempo could have elevated it to perfection while maintaining its cozy atmosphere.
Fun cover songs by willie
I really liked this album. It was relaxing. There are some memorable songs, but it generally just passed by like a calm wave for me. I will definitely go back to this album.
Willie does pop standards? Sure why not. Pretty good too. Flawless choice of songs. Arrangements that perfectly compliment Willie's voice. A very satisfying album that is hard to criticize. 4 stars
simply, incredibly lovely. i played this album a second time immediately after the first. it lured my cat to seek out the source of the sound and make herself comfortable in my lap, ears facing my laptop speakers. i've never seen my cat react to music like this. a miracle 4.5/5
The harmonica on these tracks sounds amazing and epically beautiful. Willie’s voice in this context really sparkles. Just beautiful, fun and playful arrangements. Really enjoyed the experience.
Very nice
Warm and cozy cover album from one of the greatest country songwriters of the 20th century. Took Willie 25+ years to be able to play the music he wanted to. And he did a great job doing so.
найс, подойдет для чилла или на фон под романтический ужин
back on form after the zutons yesterday best song: georgia on my mind worst song: n/a
Good folk/popular, great attitude
Okay. We all know I have a Willie bias, but, c’mon, this album is great! Willie got a bum rap for his singing, but he acquits himself nicely and throws in some solid guitar playing to accompany. He really can do most anything he wants musically. Just because it’s not all original material…
Bought this on vinyl a few years ago and it’s grown on my every year since. Was the first Willie album I heard and I could see why he’s so popular. His interpretation of these standards are subtle and warm. Perfect vinyl to put on on a Saturday afternoon.
Well jump a shark long in the tooth. By golly, I will use you! This will be my scene music for stereotypical middle class American old folks, in white picket fence romance, apple pie !
A True Music Legend singing legendary songs written by others from his past that influenced his songs. Fantastic.
I'm quite surprised I enjoy this one. Most of the time with these calmer albums I find they need something a little bit more to add to them to make them more enjoyable, but this one was different. Whether it was his voice or the mood I was in I'm not sure, but this is one I will definitely be revisiting.
Muy buen disco. Es como un country más melódico, alternativo.
Peak Willie.
A fairly good album, I liked the song Someone to Watch Over Me the most.
All covers. Not my favorite Willie Nelson, (and given how much my father hated his voice, I feel guilty saying it) but I think he has a melancholy to his voice that works with some of these oldie but goodies. That said, I prefer him singing his own songs overall.
Really wasn't prepared for this one. Fantastic production, love the vocals, songs are amazing. They are all covers, but Willie's takes are excellent. Favourite tracks: Georgia On My Mind, Blue Skies, Unchained Melody, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Don't Get Around Much Anymore
Willie’s voice is indistinguishable. I love the covers, and the originals are good too.
Willie’s greatest inspiration was Frank Sinatra. Here, he shows that he can wield the power of American pop standards just as powerfully as Frankie ever did. 4.5/5
Such a comforting and relaxing album, very short but full ouf soul and emotions
Nice mellow jams. Would listen again.
I’m at a 4. I really, really liked the first half of this album, and then the second half of the album gave me Ella Fitzgerald-adjacent PTSD of the Great American Songbook. That is to say, I think the first half of this album really clicks on a good middle ground between his contemporaries and the “classics” of his time, and the instrumentation that guides them feels like his own. He takes control of those songs in a way that feels good for 1978, and just as good in 2024. The second half of this album throws out that middle ground to focus entirely on the 30s and 40s, and while there’s not a single bad track on the album, it definitely felt like he was in less control of them, and just covering them mostly as they were, and the album sort of loses his touch. I do think what’s here is good – the Georgia on My Mind cover especially blew me away, and when this album clicks, it really clicks. I just feel like it sort of got… boring near the end. Not like, “dear God, end the album already” boring, but a lot of the back half felt like it touched on topics already explored and covered in the first half, and that redundancy, mixed with the slower tempo of everything started to make me feel drowsy, for some reason. It’s not like I was literally getting bored to sleep or anything, but the instrumentation was so calming and serene, with his vocals so soft-spoken that it simply created the perfect environment to get to that point. When I say it’s “boring”, I simply mean that the energetic songs, or at least the more bombastic instrumentation and tempo go away, and their lack of presence throughout that second half creates a sort of homogeneity that drags the album down to a 4 for me. It is Willie Nelson, though, and who am I to talk shit on his music taste? The band does a great job, his vocals are stellar, and the emotional pull of every song is left intact here; it is a good album, and a recommended one. If nothing else, that Georgia on My Mind cover gets this album to a 3 by itself, but for me, the entire package is worthy of a 4. It could totally go up to a 5 though.
"Stardust", released in 1978, is one of Willie Nelson's most iconic albums, marking a significant transition in his career and solidifying his reputation as a versatile artist. This album is a collection of American music classics, reimagined by Nelson with his unmistakable and emotional interpretation. The production of "Stardust" is notable for its welcoming and cohesive sound. Produced by Fred Foster, the album combines elements of country, pop and jazz, creating an intimate and sophisticated atmosphere. The instrumentation includes string arrangements and soft piano, which complement Nelson's distinctive voice, providing an immersive and nostalgic soundscape. "Stardust" remains a landmark in Willie Nelson's career, showcasing his ability to reinterpret classic songs in a unique and personal way. The warm, cohesive production coupled with her emotional delivery makes this album timeless, resonating with new listeners and longtime fans alike. It's a testament to Nelson's talent and a celebration of the songs that shaped American music.
A nice album that is pretty heartfelt. Great music to relax and reflect on.
Not my usual type of music but lovely for a drive plus a great version of Unchained Melody.
Stardust by Willie Nelson is an unexpectedly gentle, almost lullaby-like album that feels like it’s meant to be listened to in a quiet, relaxed setting. Nelson’s voice here is warm and unhurried, paired with subtle, sing-song guitar leads that weave through each track with a comforting rhythm. There’s a sweetness and sincerity in his delivery, making each song feel like it’s crafted for easy listening rather than dramatic impact. The album is gentle enough to slip into the background, yet it’s also engaging if you let yourself sink into its calm, nostalgic flow. I found myself picturing this album as the perfect companion for winding down at the end of the day, letting the warmth of Nelson’s voice and guitar lull me into a peaceful state. However, listening to it on a drive to work made me feel the album’s softness almost too keenly—it lacks the energy I might need to start the day. It’s an album that, while calming, teeters close to “Muzak” in its gentleness. Still, Nelson’s version of Don’t Get Around Much Anymore stood out, with his guitar taking on an almost conversational tone that was easy to sink into. Overall, Stardust is sweet and tender—an album to settle down with, not necessarily to get fired up by. Standout track: Don’t Get Around Much Anymore. Score: 4/5.
I'm torn on this rating. As a collection of songs I thoroughly enjoy them and would listen to this one a lot - 4 stars. Whether or not it should be on this list as a collection of songs not original to Willie Nelson is debatable. If this list is about pure enjoyment and albums you should experience maybe ownership shouldn't matter, especially since the originality is certainly there in this album. Yeah actually I've made up my mind I'm a fan
Willie arranges a near-perfect album that finds common ground between jazz and country. The only reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because there is no original material. It does take away some of the enjoyment of this record.
There's something so wholesome about this being the most popular album by America's most house-hold name stoner. Willie is such a vibe, this made unloading my dishwasher on an October evening very pleasant. September Song and Moonlight in Vermont made me take a break and listen.
Really good.
I've never been a big country fan, especially not modern pop country. It's awful. I do appreciate some of the older stuff and Willie Nelson is in that camp for sure. He has such a great and distinctive voice and guitar sound. So I was actually a little excited that this one came up today. I had heard a couple of the individual songs from this record so I kind of knew what to expect with the full album and I didn't really anticipate getting into it that much. But most of this album I really liked a lot more than I expected. Stardust, Georgia On My Mind, Blue Skies, Midnight In Vermont are all fantastic. Unchained Melody is one of the worst covers I've ever heard. It's sooo bad. It just doesn't work at all the way it was arranged and played. Outside of that though, this is a great record that I would definitely buy and throw on in the evening to relax with a cocktail or neat whisky. 3.75/5
Day 50 - Oct 15th, 2024 Live laugh love Willie Nelson. 4/5
It must be very tempting to give Willie a bit of a bashing but this is a good antidote to the pretentious punk nonsense of the era. Classic songs with a hint of Bing.... might wheel this out for the in laws at Christmas.
the Great American songbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzz zzz zzzzzzzzzz
I enjoyed my time with Willie
These are some lovely ditties. The only way it could be better is if it was covers by (or duets with) Kermit and I was baked. Four stars.
I've never heard this cover album from Willie Nelson, but I gotta say it slaps. Some people will rag on Willie for not being able to sing, but I love his voice. Just something smooth and nostalgic about it. Don't think it's 5-star worthy and I'm not gonna lie, it is probably 3-stars if it's anyone but Willie, but Willie gets the 4-star bump.
A collection of covers. Not my favorite concept coming from Willie in what, some may say, is his prime, but excellently executed. Always glad to see Mr. Nelson on the list. 4/5
Lovely
Everybody likes Willie for a reason. He's a cool guy and a decent singer. Liked this album of standards it was quite entertaining
Beautifully delicate and understated renditions of these classic tunes.
really good
Pretty good.
I'm not American so I don't know much about Willie Nelson or this particular album but, while doing this entire challenge, I have found I have a soft spot for country/Americana. I loved the first track immediately and how perfectly it corresponds with the cover art. From the start, I was transported to a little house on a prairie, sitting on a porch under warm late-summer night with clear skies, family dinner noises coming through dimly lighted windows.. yeah its really great, I'll be looking to find this on vinyl.
This wouldn’t sound off coming from a 60’s crooner - it’s a pleasant album with some nice songs, with Willie’s unmistakable voice. Enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
The Good: awesome cover album. The Bad: Willie could have mixed it up a little more. The Ugly: not enough outlaw on this here record. Loved it. Period.
Echt prima album hoor, wel eens een verfrissend ander geluid van Willie Nelson. 4 sterren.
Very calm and relaxing, could listen to while I work. While it’s not something I would usually listen to I can tell it’s actually very good
A wonderful collection of standards covers from Willie. Great for relaxing with a loved one.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album It was a perfectly calm and serene record
Did not know that he made music like this. It was very easy to listen to, no complaints. 4/5
i love country and i love classics what can i say
Not my favorite Willie album by a long shot but still a great representation of the man's talent.
What a delight that was!
Great album. Willie can cover anything and everyone from any genre and it’s going to be heartfelt, authentic, and worth a listen. My only gripe about this album is the production which feels a little too polished.
sleeper album of the good variety, did not expect this at all
Nice covers! 4/5
4.5
Wonderfully done! I loved every second! I never thought I'd give a cover album such a high score... 9/10 Would I listen again? Absolutely
****easy listening classic songs. Voice not great, but songs make up for that.
++: Stardust, Georgia on My Mind, Blue Skies, September Song, On the Sunny Side of the Street, Don't Get Around Much Anymore +: All of Me, Unchained Melody, Moonlight in Vermont, Someone to Watch Over Me 9,0/10
What a great voice. Peak Willie!
Despite the name this one has big sativa energy
A wonderful choice! It can be so hard to know where to begin with someone who has such a large catalogue. I’m not sure this is where I would have chosen to start, but at least it’s a start. I don’t necessarily love cover albums, but I love the opportunity to think about what makes a good cover. Willie makes these songs his own. He also makes them fresh. He might as well have released this album yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed the listen.
love me some willie nelson. on first listen i reckon i liked this more than red headed stranger, but i need to relisten to both. either way, this was lovely and very easy to listen to.
it's just so cozy
Nice and comfy listening. This guy meant a lot to a whole bunch of people musically, even though it's not really my thing.
This is my second listen of the day. A very nice discover; I will surely turn this one in a regular. Very calming.
Am I glad Willie did his own version of Someone to watch over me? I am not. But otherwise I enjoyed this album.
This paired so well with the k.d. lang album I just finished (Shadowland). They were both soothing country albums with similarly relaxing, cozy vibes. This was my first Willie Nelson album, and I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. Some cover albums sound disjointed, each song a different flavor, and don't flow so seamlessly as this. But imagine you didn't know these songs or that they were covers - it's so well produced and cohesive. All the little details are placed so well. Favorite songs are Georgia On My Mind, All of Me, Unchained Melody, and Moonlight in Vermont.
Pretty enjoyable all around. It's not really what I'd expect from Willie but he does a pretty great job with all of these covers. A solid 4.
Chill, lonely, haunting
91 and still touring is actually crazy. What a guy. High 4
I love this album but I feel like I can’t give it a 5 because they’re all covers
Probably the first sorta country album on this list I've clicked with. It's a cover album but I'm feeling it.
This is a beautiful album. Each song more beautiful than the last.
Soothing and vibrant, 4.0
Pretty solid covers album. Very chill way to start my day, but ultimately doesn’t move the needle much. I do think it’s interesting that this spent a solid decade on the country charts.
I'm quite confident Willie's the kinda guy who Was born an old man. I really appreciated this album. I was aware of some of his hits--his duet with Julio Iglesias is one of the best of all time: such different approaches and experiences with love, and I imagine very different types of romance with very different types of women--but I hadn't done a deep dive of his work, partly because I nearly loathe modern country music. I was struck by the simultaneity of his masculinity embodied by the outlaw figure, yet one who feels deeply and also weeps openly. The impermeability of the tough guy is rendered much more complex when juxtaposed with his clear emotional expression.
okay willie i wasn't familiar with your game like that but pop off
Many classics
Took a hiatus and hadn’t rated this album. I listened again and it is very fitting to the mellow start of a new year. Willie Nelson has a peculiar voice but it gives a balanced grit to the softness of the music and melody.
Beautiful and calming
Very chill, my first album listening to him, didn't know he was very chill
I enjoyed this more than I expected to!
This album of covers was very beautiful, and feels like a cozy evening at home. It reminds me of the easy-listening style of Frank Sinatra.
One of the few artists that can make enjoy some country staples. 3.8 stars
Great album the only knock I have was listening to these amazing songs made me wish I was hearing these versions with a better singer
Willie singing pop standards is a total novelty but it's a novelty I really enjoy
Beautiful record. Few covers. Love stardust. Duke Ellington wrote ‘don’t get around much anymore ‘ with bob russell
"And know the purple dusk of twilight time" brilliantly simply produced album from the Nashville legend
Having not ever listened to a full Willie Nelson song up to this point in my life but at the same time knowing his iconic status in country-western lore, I am glad to have this album come up. Even though this album was released in 1978, there is something evergreen about it that I would believe it came out in the 50s or even today. That's the quality that makes Willie Nelson one of the great American songwriters. The feelings and heart he emits in this record makes you really believe and relate to the words he sings. With a couple fantastic covers thrown in and beautiful use of acoustic guitar and accompanying harmonica throughout, this album showcases the golden age of country perfectly with not many qualities still found today. Notable Tracks - Stardust - perfect campfire lullaby vibe - Georgia On My Mind - terrific cover - Blue Skies - On the Sunny Side of the Street - very catchy 8/10
What jag blev så förvånad trodde detta skulle va ett lökigt countryalbum, men ack så fel jag hade Jättemysigt album med massa bra jazziga låtar Bästa låtar: Stardust, Georgia on my mind, On the sunny side of the street
Old country ballads. Simple, reminded me of old 50s crooners at parts. I enjoyed it.
Unchained Melody, September Song, Moonlight in Vermont, and Someone to Watch Over Me are too slow
this "Willie sings the classics" kinda works... because it's simple and I like his voice. 3.8!
chill vibes from mr nelson. more harmonica but i dig. easy listen fave track: georgia on my mind
I love an album that can defy genre. This one sounds like a very unique mix of blues and country mixed with the singer songwriter troupe and some jazz lounge singer thrown in there too. Willie Nelson has a truly angelic voice and can really write a song that pours with feeling and emotion. Truly beautiful music. I would have liked to see just a little more range for me to give it a five - it also sounds like the last couple of tracks are phoned in a bit compared to the beginning of the album.
Chill vibes, nice slow music. I thought I'd get bored but the instrumentation was lovely. Stand-out: Unchained Melody
4/5
This was super beautiful…not sure how it was influential since it’s an album of covers, but I enjoyed the Willie croons regardless.
Very soothing and delicate covers. As famous as Willie Nelson is I have never listened to any of his albums, I quite enjoyed this. That being said, not sure how I feel about a cover compilation being on the list, would much rather hear something original - he did put his flair on it at least. 3.5/5
Having only known Willie Nelson as a country legend and a favourite of old crooners, trying out his music in full for the first time I expected a lot more nasally groans and whinings about outlaws and the countryside or whatnot. I certainly did not expect to be moved by the gentle, intimate song-writing this much. Much more sensitive and sensual than I had it pinned. A bit too simplistic, especially in the lyrics, but I suppose it needn't be more than that.
Loved listening to the classics with a Willie Nelson flavor. Such a treat!
A pleasant surprise! Sure, I knew about Outlaw Country Willie, and Nashville songwriting legend Willie, but who was hiding Willie Nelson crooning like Sinatra and nailing it with an amazing singing voice?? Only miss was getting this and listening on a Saturday afternoon; it’s such a Sunday Morning brunch album. Definitely one to revisit happily.
What a delightful, quiet little album of songs I already like by an artist I already like. I don't love all of these renditions but there's definitely love in the room.
A downhome reinterptetation of Great American Songbook standards? By Willie Nelson? I feel that the battle was halfway won before I even hit the play button. And now, basking in the afterglow? An extremely pleasant listen. Nelson's voice isn't the biggest, but it does contain a soulful yearning. The arrangements are nicely balanced, allowing just enough country influence in to play nice for the Nashville crowd. Song choice is impeccable - 'Blue Skies' is the standout for me. Gorgeous stuff, then - though why is the acoustic guitar mixed so high? I feel like it's about to batter me over the head!
Willie showing us that the hits are the hits for a reason
At times this is a kitschy yet earnest covers album - at other times the covers are pretty great.
loved teh enotre album. He's an amazing singer and story teller.
Sweet
Great stuff
Cool album, great covers!
My favorite album by Willie....
Better than I remember, but still not a huge fan of his voice. Booker T lends a lot of soul to this.
each track is perfect but a whole album at once is a bit much still who am i to quibble with genius
Stardust is great. I tend to prefer concept albums, but I think I like this more than Red Headed Stranger.
Such a soothing voice.
Riktigt fina covers.
This is not my genre of music at all but Willie is killing it. Great singing, great music, just real good.
Pretty good all things considered. Like this more than a traditional Willie album.
This album doesn't sound like the way Willie Nelson looks 4/5
Another great album. Idk how nobody ever got me into Willie (pun intended). This recent run of albums has put 1001 back into my good graces
really pleasant and simple. Hadn’t heard before but I really enjoyed this and see myself coming back to it
Pleasant. Nice to hear his voice back in the day
Willie is great.
Nice
4.5 stars. A very jazzy, gentle country album. The title track sounds beautiful, "All of Me" is super catchy. The arrangements are great paired with Willie Nelson's touching vocal performance.
Such a beautiful piece of art
Nice listen on a Sunday morning.
Good album.
stardust georgia on my mind blue skies all of me september song someone to watch over me
All the renditions were really good, enjoyed this.
blue skies was my feature piece in junior high so like maybe i’m biased also all of me is best song fr
pretty good, Live the covers on jazz standards. didn’t know Willie had such a vertical musical pallet
Standards performed simply and sweetly. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t have to.
Jazz? Country? Jountry? Either way, super chill album with great sounds and sweeping moods.
Not a Willie fan, but this is a great album; good standards done straight up without a lot of cheese
Very pleasant. Wasn't really familiar with Willie's game before now. Seems like he was making music for folks holding onto a genre that may not have been as popular anymore in the 70s.
Found myself dozing a bit but I think that's part of the show, I was very relaxed the whole time, it was very pleasant. It's crazy how much music Willie has and it's nice to hear some of the classic classics. 7/10
Was chill, I enjoyed
Willie Nelson gives me good vibes and listening to this album was very relaxing.
enjoyed more than expected
Excellent album from Willie. The whole thing is very chill and easy going. I'm probably going to buy a copy of this for repeat listen again and again.
Willie was in the pocket for the songwriting on this one. Feelings of longing throughout the album, which is what I expect from great country. Could have benefited from a stronger vocalist with more range in certain spots, some of the rhythm fell flat at times. Solid option to expose someone to country music.
So smooth
very nice he has a lovely voice <3 4/5
Mostly ballads and standards so temper the outlaw expectation but 4 bc it’s Willie
4.2
Willie did it well
Loved it. Never had an album like this, but it was fun listening.
Beautiful, melancholic, tender country with a simple and loving background. Discussed a lot of views of love and longing for another person, time, or place. There is a shimmer of hope that is constant on the album, an endearing touch. Really impressed by this album, and it resonated with me. Standouts: Stardust, Georgia On My Mind, Blue Skies, September Song, Moonlight In Vermont, and Someone to Watch Over Me.
Muy bonito. Unchained Melody, Georgia On My Mind
Utterly charming
An album to play around a campfire while sipping port or whiskey. Loved it.
Good covers album. Standout songs: Georgia on my mind All of me Don't Get Around much Anymore
This album was like a cozy, comforting hug of calmness and familiarity. Like when you're a kid and you're crying because of a scraped knee and then your mom kisses it to make it better.
this was a really pleasant listen actually, i gave his last album red headed stranger a 1 which i regret as its not bad at all i just don’t gravitate towards country, but this album was really good, i thought it was relaxing and nice to listen to
Very relaxing album. Enjoyed a lot more than I was expecting. Will I listen to again: 75%
Really enjoyed that. Took me by surprise a little…
Gevoelig en mooi, met een aantal covers van bekende nummers.
Fantastic record full of standards getting the Nelson treatment. Love the story behind this record as well, another example of a legendary artist doing what they wanted to do despite label skepticism with brilliant results...and in ten days too! There were a few times I thought a reading would get corny, but I was happily proven wrong. Each new track greeted me with an earnest reading such that many will now stand right beside their more well-known recordings by other artists. Booker T Jones deserves a lot of credit for the production and arrangement too (and that organ work, so beautifully understated!). If I had any lingering doubts that Willie Nelson is a paragon of American Music (I didn't), those doubts have now been erased forever. This will be a five star record for a lot of people. Even though it is an album of covers, it's not a novelty. It is perfect, but it doesn't speak to me on the deepest level. Four stars.
This album is really beautiful and romantic. I absolutely love the first half; the second half changing a bit to a little more country/folk. Still good but I wish it carried through all the way like it started
- Willie Nelson may be the most comforting singer I have ever heard. I just never want to turn him off. - Everything here works amazingly well with his style. - Anything groundbreaking? No (beyond him just changing style in 1978). But would I gladly listen to all of this at almost any time? Yes. One of the first albums on this list that justifies buying a vinyl.
Some nice relaxing music
Nice little mellow album
So much feeling and beauty in these songs. Thanks for reminding me of Stardust
Awesome Willie vibes, so many country covers, but no originals and all finished in 10 days which is both impressive and not.
His version of unchained melody turned this into a 4
This is some really laid back Willie.
I figured this was a cover album after hearing "Georgia on My Mind", but that doesn't (or shouldn't) devalue this album at all. You can tell Willie has a ton of respect and reverence for these songs as he likely was inspired by them while starting out his music career. Willie gives these tracks a tender touch and a ton of his usual vocal charm. Just another reminder that I need to take a look at the rest of Willie's discography.
Me encantó, grasa y tierno
Don't always love an album of cover but this one I did
beautiful
I'm feeling so relaxed. What'd you say is in this cig?
