Reviews (page 9 of 13)
As an album of covers, this holds its weight. It would be easy for it to not seem heartfelt and important. Nelson clearly felt strongly about these tracks and his versions felt necessary.
Pleasant listening
Less country then expected
Meh. Nice pleasant songs but nothing I'll bother listening to again.
Not a country fan but I do enjoy me some Willie Nelson. He manages to tackle standards like only Willie can. This is a charming album. I won’t likely listen to it again anytime soon, but I’m not mad that I did.
don‘t know that album
3.5
I like his voice very much, unfortunately none of the songs really cought my ear.
This whole album is cozy. A delight.
It's a pleasant enough cover album. But it makes you wonder why this album became Willie Nelson's biggest seller.
pretty cool, nothing groundbreaking!
Kósý Willie.
Thought I would love this, but no stand out tracks and felt a bit generic 4/10
The best songs on this record are amazing. The rest are pretty darn good. A pleasure.
Not my taste
Chill
Well produced and sounds great. However, country star sings standards isn't really my preference. It is wild to think that a popular country artist could make a well produced cover album in ten days and have it stay on the charts for 10 years and go double platinum. Different ecosystem for music in the 70s and 80s I guess. (5 known . 7 new)
A nice album of easy listening covers. Nothing revolutionary but well executed. 3.5
70er SingerSongwriter Richtung slow romantic Bluesjazz. Der Typ macht aber eigentlich Country à la on the road again. Slow Guitar mit Mundharmonika ist aber trotzdem dabei.
Probably really 2.5 stars, but: (1) this thing doesn't let me give 1/2 stars; and (2) it deserves an extra star for managing to get me all the way to "this isn't that bad" and thus somewhat overcome my lifelong anti-Willie bias derived from my Dad hating him and call him "The Bedbug."
Good
Not a fan of country. However... it's peaceful and charming.
Makes you realize how old Willie Nelson really is. 3 stars or C-.
nothing wrong with it, but not my type of music. none of the singer-songwriters really are
Nice chill classic country.
This is a collection of old standards, Johnny Mercer type songs, covered in a fairly straightforward way by Willie Nelson, with respectful yet slightly country-fied arrangements. The vibe is smooth and calm, the perfect accompaniment for pleasant, chill moments at home. I generally like Willy's playing, honest way of singing, but for me there were a few times on this album that I couldn't help but compare his version to an older version I was more familiar with, especially with Unchained Melody and Georgia On My Mind. The Righteous Brothers and Ray Charles did such iconic versions of those, that, to me, it's almost like setting yourself up to fail by comparison, like those kids that go on American Idol and audition with a Whitney Houston song. I wasn't as distracted for the songs I didn't have as strong of an association with a previous version.
It was a little slow for me
Christmas eve. Willie Nelson tin Pan alley covers album. Yeah, absolutely fair enough. Couple of them are pretty forgettable, but it's a nice relaxing listen for today.
i don’t typically listen to country music, but i liked this. i liked his take on most of the covers; especially georgia on my mind. i’m gonna take this as a sign to dive deeper into willie nelson’s discography. i’m surprised i hadn’t done so sooner! 3/5
His voice is glorious but this album is a snooze. When the pace picked up a bit I enjoyed it but unfortunately it was pretty slow throughout
decent
6/10. It's pleasant, it's peaceful, and it's relaxing. Sadly, it isn't really for me.
Sounds good, but not interesting.
Delightful listen. Probably wouldn't bust this out again, but glad to have listened to it.
Enjoyable.
Sleep well, willie
having never sat down and listened to an album my Willie Nelson before, this was the perfect one to start out with. This was super enjoyable to listen to. I was expecting a much heavier country influence, and a lot more twang in the lyrics... but that wasn't the case at all. I would definitely listen to this one again.
Pleasant throughout. Low 3 for me.
A really pleasant album to listen to, and the first time I’ve ever listened to a Willie Nelson album from front to back. I enjoyed it, I just don’t know how I feel about giving an album of covers a four.
Underwhelmed by the last Willie Nelson album, and this started badly with a schmaltzy title track. It picked up after that, with his versions of Georgia on My Mind, Blue Skies, and All of Me, but then I drifted away from the rest of the album.
1. i like willie nelson 2. i didn’t know he had an album of covers. 3. sounds like the muppets a little bit
Nice
Easy listening with some lovely tracks.
I was familiar with this one already. It's enjoyable throughout, but very mellow. It's mainly covers Willie liked to sing. I know this is widely well regarded but I don't see the innovation or impact, only the longevity. Everyone loves his versions of "Georgia On My Mind", "Sunny Side Of The Street" & "Blue Skies", but I think the highlight may be "Stardust", its beautifully sung & the guitar is lovely. "All Of Me" is also a standout track. His version of "Unchained Melody" is a stretch and seems forced. It's a solid lineup of songs delivered at a high level. While good & critically adored, not sure I'd have it in the Top 1001. No big hits and no innovation but it's awesome winter-in-front-of-the-fireplace music.
Folk music isn’t totally my jam, but I would happily listen to this once a quarter. Easy listening, cred to Stardust and Blue Skies- bangers
Good background music
A few good ones, a lot that sounded similar. Would listen again but not add to playlist
Поднадоело кантри :)))
Very sweet :)
didn’t completely finish listening, but what I heard was great. i’ll continue it later on!
My heart sank a little at the prospect of listening to a Willie Nelson album of covers. But actually… I really enjoyed it. His voice is great, such control of vibrato. The band sound great too, lovely guitar sound. Ultimately it’s a little bit slight, but I did enjoy it.
Not really my bag, but rather lovely nonetheless
Had no idea this existed, the concept seems kinda unhinged at first glance. Initial favorites are Blue Skies and Sunny Side. Unchained Melody seemed like a misstep to me but I’m not really a fan of that song to begin with. And Moonlight In Vermont was like doing a shot of perfume. This is really good (in the sense that it’s like sincere, or benevolent.) Like, it’s Lawful Good. Also the only really unusual thing about this album is that someone thought of this idea and executed it in the first place. But I mean overall if you truly hated this you’d have to have a heart of ice.
I love Willie Nelson, and this was a lovely album, but it also felt like a slightly odd choice for this list. To me, it's best suited to the right mood and environment - I'm thinking winter, cozy, gentle snow outside - but I'm not sure how to rate it for everyday listening. Three stars, I think?
It's a solid overview of American Standards
Quite nice initially but then I got a bit sleepy tbh 😴
Fall dinner background music
A very lullaby-like album comprised of mostly covers, which Willie does well.
Thoroughly enjoyed, added a few to my playlist
Some old classics, chilled time. Slightly dated
stardust- and this isnt stairway to heaven? 5 georgia on my mind- 4 or 5 blue skies- 4 or 5 all of me- billie did it better. pretty good though. 5 unchained melody- 5 september song- 5 on the sunny side of the street- 6 or 7 moonlight in vermont- 5 dont get around much anymore- 5 or 6 someone to watch over me- 5 it was fine
not bad, easy listening.
While I appreciate Willie’s style this album didn’t hit for me.
What a curious album. I wasn’t at all sure about the idea, then I sort of liked it, then it seemed a bit saccharine in places. It certainly surprised me and was perfectly pleasant, but there’s not really anything much to bring me back again. It’s certainly a curious choice for this list. Not sure exactly what the critic that put this forward was thinking really as it is all a bit sweet and sticky and there doesn’t seem anything overly notable about it.
Not really massively into Country, but this was alright.
this made me feel sleepy but in a pleasant way
that was nice. very pretty
Willie doing all covers. Interesting idea. Well done, but not amazing.
Country style music, it’s okay I guess :)
Blue skies, unchained melody
Stardust Moonlight in Vermont
Blind album and artist. Know the name of course. I can understand the appeal, and I thought it was alright.
3.5 stars. Willie Nelson switches from country outlaw to cover some pop hits in his soft, easy vocal style. He puts a simple yet nice spin on things and it is a pleasant listen if not a revelation. Standout "Moonlight in Vermont"
Big fan of Willie, but not a big fan of this album. Although I loved the harmonica break downs on some of the songs, I found the overall album a but bland for my taste
Lots of covers, a bit on the slow side
Didn’t love it.
Stardust (title) - beautiful Is this just all covers? okay yes this is all covers lol. moonlight in vermont is an all time fav. Surprisingly I knew 8 out of 10 of these songs.
i know he's from Texas but i'm ready for Nashville blue skies is a slay on the sunny side of the street - ok willie sinatra also the guitar at times.. its giving norteño.. he is also honorarily mexican imo
Soft and sweet, pleasant background, coffee drinking music.
First listen. Ok.
Albumi #75, 11.10.2024 Willie Nelsonin cover-albumi. Muutama ihan hyvä biisi.
Really enjoyed this but the chill vibes don't do quite enough for me to rate 4
The outlaw country legend covering american classics. Why would anybody think that this could go wrong? Although I'm no fan of his and don't particularly like the songs he covered, I see the reason for this to be on this list.
Easy listening
Pretty and relaxing! Also boring. I'd have to be in a very specific mood to listen to this.
respect the music but not for me
Pretty good.
Track 1: Stardust (7/10) I would love to listen to this while out in a field, looking up at the stars. Very beautiful and Willie has a classic country voice. Track 2: Georgia On My Mind (5/10) I enjoyed it, but it feels emotionally flat for me and I have a hard time connecting to it. Track 3: Blue Skies (7/10) This might be my new favourite version of this song. Very pretty! Track 4: All of Me (5/10) I don't think Willie's voice fits most of these upbeat songs actually, the instrumentation is fine but the vocals aren't powerful enough for me. Track 5: Unchained Melody (8/10) In contrast, his voice is gorgeous in the slower songs. I can see myself listening to this one over and over again. Track 6: September Song (6/10) Pretty song. Not much else to say. Track 7: On the Sunny Side of the Street (5/10) Uh oh, I'm running out of things to say about these songs. They're all starting to blend together. Track 8: Moonlight in Vermont (5/10) I'm officialy so bored, the songs aren't bad but they all sound the same. Willie's voice can't save it at this point. Track 9: Don't Get Around Much Anymore (6/10) This is a bit better, we needed a song that was more upbeat at this point even if Willie is better at singing the slower songs. Track 10: Someone to Watch Over Me (6/10) Decent closing track, one of Willie's better vocal performances on the album. Overall: 6/10 Not a bad album. I found it hard to concentrate near the end due to the samey feeling of the songs. I get bored easily by slow country unless I switch it up in between, but then I wouldn't get a full album experience. Willie is still a legend and I'm hoping to enjoy his other albums better. Fav Song: Unchained Melody Least Fav Song: On the Sunny Side of the Street
I thought Willie's voice/style worked well covering these classics.
I like Willie Nelson. The weird thing is the more I listened to this the less I liked it. It usually works the other way round. I think it all got a bit samey after a while
This album was super super lovely. Love willie and a lot of these versions killed. <33
Nice and pretty! Stardust one of my all time fav songs!!!
This was a nice and short album, but it was a bit too meh because nothing exciting really happened. Of course, Willie Nelson is a legend but I like it when things are a bit more dynamic.
strong 3
This is nice. Not something I'd return to but it's nice that this exists.
Meh. Enkel covers. Sommigen waren wel oké, maar 't klinkt wel vree repetitief. 2.6
2.7 1x not bad but expected better
Very nice, good guitar. Very dreamy
A cute album of standards. He chooses well for his voice. Glad it's only 30 minutes though, could've outstayed it's welcome otherwise.
Good selection of songs but overall uninteresting to me if I'm honest.
Old Willie
Couple of nice tracks, and I didn't hate the rest like I do most C&W
I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about a Willie Nelson album of jazz standards but I was quite enamoured by the opening track, a beautiful rendition of Hoagy Carmichael’s Stardust with an instrumental palette I’d never have expected to hear from Nelson but complemented his voice perfectly. Unfortunately the instrumentals didn’t change that much at all throughout the album and the novelty wore off relatively quickly - it was still lovely in places but just very uninteresting after a few tracks of the same, and some of the song choices didn’t suit him as well as the openers
Bien
Rating: 6/10 Very pleasant to listen to, a calm and relaxing album. On first listen a lot of it felt pretty forgettable but I would probably rate this much higher on a second or third listen. Would definitely like to revisit at some point. Choice cuts: Blue Skies, Unchained Melody, On the Sunny Side of the Street
Pleasant to listen to, nothing wow.
Good listen
like floating in the river
Great songs sung well, enjoyable for a Sunday evening
I really like this. I never heard much of Willie Nelson’s but I have listened to this from time to time over the years. He really knows how to do covers of songs
ну это какой то кантри здорового человека
This album was pleasant enough. I did expect to see Willie Nelson on this list given his iconic status. However, I did not expect to see this album as I don't see how it broke new ground.
Pleasantly short album of only covers. Willie is a great artist and I love his music, however I likely will not revisit this album any time soon.
Coming from a jazz background, the interpretations are pretty simple, but it was innovative for Willie and that's what makes it special. Nice arrangements for a country album. Doesn't necessarily warrant regular listens throughout my life, but glad to know it. Booker T. Jones sounds fantastic. Moonlight in Vermont is the winner for me.
A little too corny for me
Very nice album with some great songs.
A very laidback album of familiar songs played in an unassuming style. It’s pleasant but so low-key that I feel limited in how enthusiastic I can be about it. Willie Nelson has a very warm voice though. His singing here made me smile.
I actually haven't listened to much Willie Nelson in my life outside of random radio plays. When I think of him, I think of the word "serene". I think of a calm older cowboy sitting by a fireplace, strumming his nylon guitar, and serenading his partner with a soft and tremble-y voice. So that was my expectation for this album, and that's what I got. It's beautiful, warm, inviting, and a nice listen. Keeping it at a 3 is that I tend to like more offensive music and this was about as inoffensive as it gets.
Really odd first track choice. I like Willie, and I like this album (hadn’t heard most of it before) but I question a covers album on the 1001 albums of all Time.
Pretty decent Mr Nelson, pretty decent
I've tried listening to this at work a few times and I thought I was going to doze off. Some good songs but most were a little too slow for me. High 3.
5/10 - It was alright. I mean fairly relaxing but nothing special. His voice is alright and the instrumentals are pretty good. I liked Georgia on my mind but other than that it was fine.
Cover songs done well, but nothing that really stands out for me.
Fine but a little boring
a bland collection of safe covers, by an artist with far more to say than just using old songs. they are well sung, arranged and produced, but it all feels a bit of a waste of time - his as much as mine. possibly a contract fulfiller?
Easy listening here. Nothing remarkable either way, but Willie's voice saves the day.
Parempaa countrya! 3/5
Avausraita on yks omista suosikkistandardeista, mut ei tämä Nelson muuten ihan vakuuttanut. 3/5.
These interpretations are all done Really well, but not the content I want from Willie. Guitar sounds nice and clean but not sure I will listen again hoping there is another album on this list.
Expected to find this one more remarkable than I did. If you didn't think Willie Nelson could do crooner pop music, maybe you were in for a surprise? Perhaps if I knew these songs by worse versions I'd appreciate the restraint? Very pleasant but I won't be thinking "I should put on Willie Nelson's Stardust!" when I want to hear Willie Nelson or when I want to hear pop songs.
Usually I think it’s corny when someone does their take on the American Pop Standards. I still do here, but Willie pulls it off pretty well.
3.4
Favourite song - Blue skies. 2.5 stars
I liked the calm atmosphere :)
All slow jams but much better than the previous Willie Nelson album that came up
I think this is Willie’s attempt at jazz? If that’s what the genre is that I’m thinking. He has a type of delivery that can cross numerous musical platforms. This could be a pleaser for an older generation. Like retirement age. Best suited as a soundtrack for a department store like Khols. This isn’t where I’d start with a Willie Nelson album but it has its place in the world. Choice cut. Unchained melody
Not expecting covers, but enjoyed very much anyway. Is it special. Yes. Is it to die for? Not so much. 3 stars, for the harmonica.
Sympa de belle reprise
Everyone loves a bit of…..wait think about that statement - Mr Nelson offering up same sort of thing he always does
some great covers
I got Stardust for free at my local record shop (shout out to Tigers & Daggers Records in Merced, CA!) a few years back, but haven’t listened until today. Pleasant and inoffensive throughout. Lots of great classics here. Hard to give it more than a 3, because… 1. All of the songs are covers. Which would be fine, except… 2. I wouldn’t consider any of these covers to be the definitive versions. It doesn’t feel like an album that is necessary to revisit. But enjoyable, nonetheless.
it’s ok, just not my genre
Willie covers stuff
That was solidly mid.
Probs the best 3* ever, could really be a 4. Very relaxing and lovely
Mysig country men tråkig. Lite kul med On the Sunny Side of the Street och All of Me fast country vibes liksom. Annars var albumet väldigt likt. Inte dåligt men inte mer än okej. Favvo: All of me
Lekker rustig
no offense to Willie, the album was fine, but why is an album of covers on this list
-not too bad. not really my kinda music and a little boring and repetitive at parts, but still nice to listen to -I cannot tell if this is country music -Favorites are Stardust, September Song, and On The Sunny Side Of The Street
Willie in his heyday.
Pretty.
This has artistic merit, but when I’m listening to Moonlight in Vermont, I’m always reaching for a Billie Holiday recording
Love the album cover (of a cover album).
Not bad.
Chill vibes from Willie. Certified legend status.
Willie Nelson let me down
Stardust 3.4 Georgia on My Mind 3.3 Blue Skies 3 All of Me 3.3 Unchained Melody 3.4 September Song 3.1 On the Sunny Side of the Street 3 Moonlight in Vermont 2.9 Don't Get Around Much Anymore 3 Someone to Watch Over Me 3.1 Score: 3.15
Lovely idea and I can see why the record company was horrified their bad boy of country wanted to do it. Standards are fine, but very background for me.
i love willie nelson
Well, this sure wasn't what I expected. The guts to barely have any accompanying music... Very pleasant but I do feel the impact has faded as the debut context and history have. Accessible though, I'd play this for just about anyone. Listened to: at home. Favorite tracks: Unchained Melody, Moonlight in Vermont, Someone to Watch Over Me
Willie Nelson is a dude and love these covers, although makes me want to listen to Johnny Cash who covered some of my favourite rock bands instead of this softer selection...
I mean, it definitely isn't my favourite Willie Nelson album, but it's pretty cool he made it
Although there were one or two songs on here that I didn't hate, much of it was pop standards from the 40s and 50s that were just awful songs. With this terrible base, it would take a miracle for me to not despise this. Willie did a wonderful job, so I'm going with 3 stars, but it's bland material that I would never want to listen to again.
Just a chill little album. Perfect match for today's rainy weather.
Does anyone else hear how this albums first 10 seconds sounds a lot like Stairway to Heaven?? Just me?? Ok. Awesome intimate guitar on the first track, don’t think his voice is strong but I do love the atmosphere. This just deserves some slightly better vocals I think. Quickly realised from track 2 that it wasn’t going to take the sound any further, though. A pleasant listen but not that rewarding as an album for me. Too one dimensional without enough to justify it? Favourite track: September Song
This is a very beautiful record with some familiar songs that I didn’t know Willie had ever covered. Very easy one to listen to and makes me appreciate this artist even more.
Decent covers by WIllie here!
No estuvo tan culero como me hiciste creer, Georgia on my mind y Someone to watch over me me agradaron tbh.
I liked this album quite a bit, I thought it had some nice covers and enjoyed Willie's voice
Willie's Outlaw country style and Booker T's folksy arrangements are probably the only way I could enjoy listening to an album of pop standards
Not a big country guy but this album was interesting and unique. All of the songs blended together in my head but it was a good time to listen to.
It’s alright.
Not sure what I was expecting but this was pretty nice to listen to. Not massively countrified which is a plus
Could be a 3.5. Easy going and nice to listen to but not something i would seek out.
Lidt kedeligt men lød virkelig pænt!
So sleepy.
1. Stardust: molto chill un po' ripetitiva e troppo lunga 6/10 2. Georgia on My Mind: chill ma molto simile alla prima 6/10 3. On The Dunny Side of The Street: simile a All of Me 7/10 8. Moonlight in Vermont: un po' un misto tra i due generi, voce e archi/batteria e chitarra. Comunque tranquilla 7/10 9. Don't Get Around Much Anymore: carina, forse la più movimentata, una piacevole melodia e un accostamento di strumenti piacevole ma un po' corta 8/10 10. Someone to Watch Over Me: chill ma molto simile alle altre e molto ripetitiva 6/10 Giudizio Finale: album carino, le canzoni sono molto simili tra loro e Willie Nelson dimostra di mantenere uno stile molto simile in tutte le sue canzoni, voto finale 7/10
Respectfully: Willie Nelson does a good job of infusing these old standards with his iconic vocal sound. But this comes out at a time when pop standards were passé. A few other big names filled gaps in the market when there was no traditional pop on the charts: Linda Ronstadt, Rod Stewart (!), Carly Simon, and this. Would have been better if Willie leaned more into his Country and Jazz instincts, instead of the straight approach he takes here. I will say, pretty rebellious to make this album, as a successful country artist, in 1977. At least it wasn't disco or punk. Thanks, I suppose for that!
- entspannt 2,75
Well, this definitely *wasn't* what I thought I'd listen to when I saw it was a Willie Nelson album. I like the concept, sort of, in principle, and Willie Nelson *does* do a good job giving the hoary classics his own touch, but the whole time I felt like I was listening to James Taylor (or maybe Jimmy Buffett) doing a Christmas album. I'm not as well-versed with Willie Nelson's music as I should be, but I'm pretty sure this isn't a great entree to his music, so hopefully there will be other albums of his in this collection...
- vibes are exceedingly starry - picturing staring out an evening window onto a summer evening - cottage for sure - it’s up there. it’s lovely - 3/5 will listen to again
1- real cute slow song very chill summer beach vibes lyircs cute and all 6/10 2- this is cute I really like the end! 8/10 so cute 3 this is actually so cute for playing in the background I like this album now 7/10 This whole album so far is so calming 4- yesss my fave so far I'm not even halfway through this is soooo cute 9/10 5- love a good love song this is the cutest album everrrr 10/10 6- pianooo somethings nit clicking with me need to relisten but still 7/10 7-happy songggg I probably wouldn't add to liked songs cause not sure about the lyrics but it's very cute kind of childlike? 6/10 8- my claimed songgg,,, and its a real one fr so descriptive you can imagine this scene so clearly and it's beautiful the album cover adds to it 8/10 9- love the subject of this song he's too scared to go out cause people will ask about their relationship os he js stays home I liked that 8/10 10- one of my favorites 10/10 Overall probably would not listen to this album in completion again but such beautiful background music I loveeee and I love some of these songs for sure overall would probably rate a little bit lower than all the songs but it is very beautiful and I can appreciate the working the cohesiveness of this album, like HIT ME HARD AND SOFTS cute older brother lol (both 10 tracks and blue album covers)
3 Some really nice tracks, with some good instrumentation. Some interesting lyrics. And a really nice vocal performance. A nice easy to listen to album. A cozy and calm album. Favorite Tracks: Stardust, Unchained Melody, Moonlight In Vermont Least Favorite Tracks: Blue Skies, All of Me, On The Sunny Side of the Street
I love Willie and some of these slap but it's not my favorite album.
Very lovely easy listening.
Willlieeeee
Great Album, he has a good voice, the music just isn’t a style I particularly love or listen to often
As a concept, I respected the album and I think a lot of the arrangements were beautifully done. The whole track list had a melancholic vibe throughout. For some songs I think Willie’s more laidback and subtle vocal performance worked really well. On other tracks I think it was a hindrance to my enjoyment of the album. Ultimately, it left more to be desired. Fav songs: Blue Skies All of Me September song
Willie Nelson’s Stardust perfectly matches the album cover. It feels abstract, grand, but solemn, and lonely. That’s an element of this album that I really liked the most, how much order there was to it. However besides that, I didn’t like the individuals tracks a lot, besides Stardust and On the Sun Side of the Street. All in all, Stardust is an alright album. Best Song: Stardust Worst Song: Unchained Melody
A lot of standards from a bygone era here. All very pleasant, but nothing special. Wouldn't turn them off, but equally, wouldn't turn them on. Got to be a middle of the road, easy listening 3
I must feeling mellow, fuck knows why. This was one of the least painful 'Country' records I've ever listened to. Probably because it's mainly missing a lot of the typical clichés in the songs, or to put it better, spread out across in a palatable veneer. On the other side of the coin, if I was feeling in a less charitable mood, which is probably how I should be feeling, I would sum it up as the American version of Val Doonican, replete with rocking chair and jumper and all the bile I could throw at it. By ‘Sunny Side of the Street’ I was getting seriously bad Micheal Buble vibes...... However, I'm feeling nice. It's going to get a 3.
Slow and stately country ballads with easy listening arrangements: nylon string guitar, piano, organ, cheesy strings, some nice horns and a light hand drum/bass rhythm section. His understated lead guitar playing on the nylon strings is great on a few tracks, simple, melodic, and spacious - says a lot with very little. Willie Nelson's warm baritone is the throughline on the album though: technically limited but aged and inviting, he croons his way through a set of jazz & country standards. It's an interesting companion to Ray Charles' 'Modern Sounds in Country' insofar as as we see a canonical artist interpreting the songbook - but it's not really a good representation of Willie Nelson's actual contribution to American music. Phases & Stages or the one with Waylon Jennings would be much better picks. That said, this sets an incredibly gentle relaxing mood - it's the audio equivalent of taking a hot shower after a dusty day.
Ok, sure.
Recht ruhig, melodisch, gut zum nebenher hören.
Good rainy day/driving album… which fits cause today is rainy all day lol
Chill. The cowboy equivalent of driving around at night while it’s raining.
This was a sweet album - not like "yo sweet dude", more like "aww that's sweet". Had never listened to Willie Nelson much before, was always put off by him simply because of the cult of personality surrounding him as some stoner icon... Not really sure if this album clarifies any of that at all, wouldn't consider this something you need to listen to while high. It was fine to me. I liked Blue Skies a lot, guitar tone on that one was clean.
Итс окэй. Какой-то оригинальности в этом якобы "не кантри" я не увидел, но и чего-то резко негативного не испытываю. Лучшая песня - Unchained Melody.
It's a sweet little cover album, nothing too crazy. Love 'Unchained Melody' but i think that's just because the original is such a great song anyway. Wish i'd got an original album by him instead but this was an enjoyable time.
Pretty good stuff. Nice production.
Really charming album, but at the same time, hearing Willie Nelson cover various standards is of no major consequence. I hope he has other albums in the top 1001!
Wasn't bad... but his voice doesn't suit the songs 😬 3 ⭐️
Smooth af
Relaxing, cozy interpretations of pop standards. I probably like the first half more, but it's all pretty pleasant stuff, even veering a bit into jazz territory with On the Sunny Side of the Street and Don't Get Around Much Anymore. Highlights: Blue Skies, All of Me, Unchained Melody, Don't Get Around Much Anymore.
Very relaxing and even though it's a country album, not a very country sound. I'm still not a Willie Nelson fan but this is a good album.
This was a really solid album that was really peaceful to listen to. Not a lot that really got me excited, but it definitely has it's place. I think this is a 3.5/5, but at they moment I'm feeling like a 3 fits better than a 4
This one is a mixed bag. There are some quality western (read: not C&W) tunes as well as some surprisingly well done covers of pop classics, but much of it comes across as Willie singing over bad karaoke tracks.
3/5. Love hearing Willie's voice and the songs are nice but there does seem to be some missing passion in some songs. These are not bad songs just okay as a collection in general. Not much else to say, but I might check out some of these songs later on. Best Song: Georgia On My Mind, Unchained Melody, Someone To Watch Over Me
3 for my personally tastes the songs are bit slow and sappy but it’s a fantastically made album
So chill and easy listening. Calming, relaxing and mellow Texas
This is a lovely album - it really cheered me up and reminded me life is worth living if we are able to listen to music like this. I am officially a Willie Nelson fan. His cover of Unchained Melody is great too. Also, last week Willie Nelson released a duet of a country song about gay cowboys with Orville Peck and that makes me so so happy. ALSO, the interludes on Cowboy Carter? SLAY Standout tracks: - Blue skies: 4/5 - Someone to watch over me 4/5
Smooth voice.
Stardust Willie Nelson Background: This is already the 22nd album by Willie Nelson, it’s all pop standards recorded by Willie Nelson, the king of cowboy country. Produced by Booker T Jones, the album is a departure from what he had done up to this point. The arrangements suit Willie’s voice and keep the spirit of the standards many of which played no small part in inspiring Nelson to become the musician that he became. Track-by-track: Stardust Willie Nelson’s voice is distinctive and iconic now. We try to think back to context here in 1978 when the album came out. This song is a relatively standard jazz/country song, guitar arrangement on the nylon string guitar is pleasant, the hammond organ on top of the piano adds to the ethereal feeling of “stardust”. It’s hard to think that this is “On the road again” Willie Nelson, but I think Willie Nelson’s voice may be something I can only feel one way about. Georgia on my Mind This intro organ is great, and Willie’s voice actually suits Georgia on my mind quite well, even if his version as he worried will never be as good as Ray Charles’. The country jazz feeling of this rendition still brings something new with the addition of the organ and Willie’s distinctive country voice. The guitar arrangement and piano arrangement work around the organ to make a rendition of this song that understandably performed well on the charts. This is the first time they bring out the melodica and it has a great effect on this version. Blue Skies There’s something more blue than blue skies about this rendition of Irving Berlin’s song. All of Me These minimalist arrangements and instrumentation really suit Willie Nelson’s voice. The combination of guitar simple drums and the hammond organ create a mood that suits perfectly the idyllic voice of Willie Nelson. Guitar work on this track is great, gives a real country jazz feeling. Nelson’s voice is only what it is, a part of the ensemble of the song, his renditions aren’t technical, they aren’t the best way these songs have ever been sung, but there’s something pure about the combination of solid simple arrangements and his distinctive twangy voice. The production also just sounds good. Unchained Melody He even decides to take on Unchained Melody, perhaps the most prolifically performed song in popular music. Wilie’s version is worthy, the strings and the harmonica solo really stand out alongside Nelson’s guitar playing and his performance in his higher register, which is a technical merit that perhaps people don’t give enough credit to Nelson for. September Song Kurt Weill’s September song, another standard written aptly for an older star in a musical who had a limited vocal range, this version stands out among the stronger tracks on the album although perhaps it would be even better to hear now in Nelson’s old age. Is this album the midlife crisis, the existential crisis of Willie Nelson? He recorded this album in 10 days, Booker T Jones’ arrangements are so congruent and singular, his piano and organ playing so consistent. On the Sunny Side of the Street This one’s just pretty forgettable to be honest, adds to the overall feeling of the classics, but I just can’t help but like other versions of the song better. Moonlight in Vermont This is the song that inspired Willie to do this album, the one that he asked Booker T Jones to arrange for him and made him decide to go forward with the project he wasn’t sure would work with a producer he hadn’t worked with before. Suddenly I feel that Willie Nelson could pass for a granola man with his granola wife in Vermont when I hear him sing this song, that the southern twang of his voice is not so much southern as it is mountain. More great melodica/harmonica parts here and the interplay of organ and piano again makes a great backing to the simple sharp voice that Nelson delivers. Don’t get around much anymore For some reason I played this song on guitar and liked to sing it when I was first learning guitar. The guitar sound with the bass and organ is nice on this one. These versions are really something nice, something distinctly Americana, also something very white though. These songs are great songs and the versions are very digestible, but I think probably Willie could have chosen not to cover most of these songs and we would have been just as well off. This song really reads like a sad country western, and actually fits Nelson very well. Someone to watch over me George Gershwin tune, honestly this track is one of the songs that holds up the least well as a standard today. Not entirely surprising considering it’s not a top song of George Gershwin and it’s quickly approaching 100 years old. We’re not really getting anything new at this point, more of the same combinations of strings, organ, guitar and album #22 from Willie Nelson wraps up. Overview: Every time I open one of these songs I just feel like it can’t hold a candle to the version that Ella Fitzgerald did. For instance moonlight in vermont has a version with a beautiful piano arrangement behind it as well as a Louis Armstrong solo, Willie’s version is nice, but Ella’s version is downright divine. If I had to only listen to one version it would be Ella’s version with no question. The style that they chose for this album is great, I enjoyed listening to probably 8-9/10 of the songs on the album and generally thought the instrumentation was enjoyable. Some of the instrumentation approached being innovative, though the range of production was predictably limited as the 10-track album was recorded in as many days. The combination of Booker T Jones and Willie Nelson works very well, and definitely finds its way into a niche that feels different from other versions of the same songs, feels true to Willie Nelson, and feels true to the all-time classic standards that were on the album.
Very peaceful. Favorite track: Blue Skies
The album itself is quite nice, lot of good songs with pleasant lyrics but I can't get used to his voice and depressing melodies (too much of a crooner style?). I've heard multiple covers of these songs that I've enjoyed more.
Soft rock? I’m honest: i didn’t really focus on this album
3+
Stardust is a pleasant listen, soft songs with Willie singing about weather and being glad overall. Simple and effective approach here. 3 stars
Relisten!
I think this is the first “cover” album I’ve gotten (standards count as covers right?). This was nice, and I think I’m officially a fan of Willie Nelson now (3.5/5)
на удивление приятный - раньше оказывается норм кантри было! анчейнд мелоди это у нас кантри! много открытий
This is a very charming album that I will never have occasion to listen to again, except, perhaps, if/when Willie dies.
Just okay, pretty boring but well made covers. I liked Don't Get Around Much Anymore and Blue Skies
I mean this in the absolute best way possible. I fell asleep listening to this album. Some great covers here. Favorite songs were Stardust, Georgia On My Mind, Blue Skies, and Moonlight in Vermont
Quite pretty yet boring
It’s pleasant enough hearing Willie’s takes on others’ songs, but I’d rather see an album of originals on the 1001 list than this.
I’m not usually into this crooner wannabe album sorta thing but Willie gets a pass because he’s Willie and because Booker T produced it.
Very pleasant and very well produced, but tbh the whole thing was sullied for me knowing it’s all covers. It’s not bad at all but I don’t really see the point for this list. 3.1/5
I should hate this? I don't hate this
You know exactly what you're getting with a Willie nelson album, and this is no exception. Perfectly nice, perfectly fine
So quit, good to listen during the late evening
Ну лайтово, лирично. Приятно слушать, но не моё. Может, не в настроение попал
I'm surprised an album full of covers made it to this list. The songs aren't half bad, but I kept thinking it doesn't sound a lot different that what I would expect from a lounge singer.
There's an internal mechanism within my brain that almost always tries to reject anything that is country. I've been trying to override this recently, especially when it's an artist and album from the 60s, 70s or 80s. This was such a pleasant surprise. It set me on a good mood for a chilly Monday morning in March.
Not a big country western fan, but Willie is one of those songwriters that is so prolific you have to respect them. So many of these songs have been covered by other artists that familiarity alone makes them enjoyable.
I loved reading about how Willie’s decision to release an album of jazz and pop covers ruffled the feathers of record company executives worried it would undermine his outlaw image when, in fact, doing so only reinforced that image.
not bad
Had Georgia On My Mind while I watched the Moonlight In Vermont when I heard this one.
A nice cover album. Ringo Starr’s cover of Stardust is still better though! 7/10 Top 3: 1. Stardust 2. Unchained Melody 3. Don’t Get Around Much Anymore
Some good songs
Cool - some nice takes on songs. But I think a cover album can only max out at a 3.
It was nice but I probably won't ever listen to it again.
Solid fit being covers. Neat arrangements.
Pleasantly surprised by this one. I'm not a fan of country, but do have a lot of respect for an artist like Willie Nelson. Turns out, this is an album full of old classic cover songs and had very little country stylings. It's not a challenging album, but it is comfortable. Willie's guitar playing and vocals are always center stage, sounding great. Production on this was handled by Booker T (as well as organ duties) and as a big fan it was evident. All around a good listen.
This is my second, and therefore last Willie Nelson album to review. I liked The Red Headed Stranger, but I'm also not super into Willie's music (nothing against him, it's just not what I gravitate towards), so I wasn't sure what I'd feel about this album. I think the overall concept of performing pop and jazz standards is really great, and I love that Willie basically told his record label to kick rocks when they expressed hesitation at the idea, and then the album went on to perform really well and win a Grammy. Are record company executives even human, or are they just sentient piles of garbage? I digress. I'm not terribly familiar with many of these songs, but I thought Willie did a great job of singing them, and putting his own musical touch on each one of them. Willie's voice is great, and I love the gentleness and smoothness that he brings to each song. "Unchained Melody," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," and "Moonlight in Vermont" were my favorite tracks on here, and I think I prefer Willie's version of "Unchained Melody" to the Righteous Brothers version. Overall, I thought this album was fine. It's well done and and it's a unique and enjoyable listen. It's not the sort of thing I gravitate towards, but I'm glad I got to experience it.
I like the songs on here, I am unsure about the singer. It is clear he has skills and he has a good sense of musical phrasing, but just coming from listening to jazz where these songs are sang so much differently my ear is not used to it. I got nostalgic feelings from this album. I thought it was good but it is not my préférence, but it is enjoyable.
Wel chiller dan verwacht, nummers als georgia on my mind kun je ook weinig aan verneuken. Snap vooral niet dat zo'n album met alleen covers hier tussen staat.
Classic Willie Nelson. My gripe with the album is that it is very slow and full of ballads.
Willie Nelson's "Stardust" is a masterful exploration of American pop standards, in its artistry and innovation. At the heart of this album's success is the collaboration between Nelson and the legendary Booker T. Jones, whose sophisticated and understated arrangements breathe new life into these timeless classics. Jones's work on the album is nothing short of genius, providing a lush, yet never overpowering backdrop that perfectly complements Nelson's distinctive and tender vocal delivery. This partnership elevates tracks like "All of Me" to new heights, showcasing Nelson's unique interpretive skills and Jones's remarkable ability to frame them within the context of American music heritage. While Nelson's vocal style may not seamlessly fit each song, as observed in his take on "Sunny Side of the Street," the overall impact of "Stardust" on the music industry is undeniable. It blurred genre lines, broadening Nelson's appeal and setting a precedent for musical exploration. The album's boldness, coupled with Jones's masterful arrangements, cements its status as a significant achievement. "Stardust" not only demonstrates Nelson's artistic bravery but also celebrates Jones's pivotal role in its creation, making it an essential listen for those who cherish the art of musical reinterpretation and the transformative power of collaboration.
Listening to Willie cover these American standards really helps to showcase the quality and simplicity of his voice. While it's a great compendium of American songs, it feels like it shorts out not having one of the greatest singer song writers with his own music. I hope to hear him again on this list.
easy listen
Very nice
Nice and mellow, very easy to listen to. Probably a 2 or 3 star?
it's a fun album. the confidence and the level of no-fucks-given to just record a cover album for fun is something I truly admire. good for him
not my favourite Willie Nelson joint on this list, but it's a sleepy journey through some lovely covers.
Very pleasant for nighttime sick crocheting. So so relieved that I didn't get Deep Purple or Korn tonight
OK, was not expecting this. I can't stand most country music (esp. since the "achy breaky" & beer-bro era), but Willie Nelson (along w/ Johnny Cash) is one of the few I can listen to. So why, on this list, do we get an absolute legend in the world of country music doing... an entire album of pop standard covers? IDGI. 3* I guess cuz he still has an unmistakable voice, but I'm utterly baffled why this album is on the list. side note: hearing Willie Nelson sing Unchained Melody is about as weird as hearing The Pet Shop Boys singing You Were Always On My Mind.
I love Willie Nelson and the whole outlaw country thing, but this album is a noted departure from that style. I can see the appeal, but for me, it's far too light. Very reminiscent of easy-listening elevator music. Still some great arrangements of the songs though.
That was a peaceful listen. I'm not sure what else to write on a review for it. The album ended and I almost hadn't noticed any specific song. It all blended together into each other.
Sleepy cover album. Nothing outstanding, I'm not familiar with these tracks but they all seem pretty standard to me. Not the outlaw country I know Willie from but not terrible at the same time.
I was pleased, and impressed by the recording quality. I'll gravitate more toward his own dope smoking and/or cowboy tunes, however.
Willie and the great American songbook.
Great artist, easy to listen too, but not my jam at all.
This is not my cup of tea at all, so it's hard to rate. This is one of the cleanest and most professionally recorded albums I think I've heard. Great job on the production. I can certainly see what the appeal would be for people who might like this style of music. He has a very appealing voice and it's relaxing in a way. I just wouldn't ever pick to listen to this style. Fav tracks: N/A
Some amazing songs on here. Blue Skies is fantastic.
Did not one this album existed. I love these old American classic songs and Willie Nelson does a nice job covering them. Definitely a country twang feel and I prefer other artists singing these songs, but it was fine. Moonlight In Vermont was probably the best.
Good ol willie
first three is pretty but the others are boring
it’s a great album though it is only covers. That is what caps this for me.
Nicht so meine Musik, aber kann man anhören.
I have a lot of reverence both for Willie Nelson and the compositions on this record. And I do like this album, but it's not something I'm likely to listen to on a regular basis. There are multiple albums of his I know that I prefer, and multiple versions of most of these songs that I prefer. 3.5/5
That was a sweet listen actually. I don’t listen to much Willie Nelson but I imagine this is one of his slower albums. I dig. (3.5)
Not an awful album. Willie actually didn't do too badly on this collection of covers. Think I would've pick an album full of his original outlaw country selections if I was choosing a must listen album of Willie Nelson. Solid 3⭐
Wish I liked Willie more
Listened Before? No Interesting that a cover album made this list. Also, sweet Jesus this dude was prolific; this is his 22nd studio release! Through the first three, I can say that this has a supremely laid back vibe. Nice, but Georgia On My Mind belongs to Ray. All of Me is a nice one that gives more space to the guitar work -- fell like his voice is effortless, but effective. Cohesive album that made for a very calming listen indeed. I particularly enjoyed Unchained Melody and Don't Get Around Much Anymore. This isn't really something I'll be back for anytime soon, but if I ever need an inoffensive album of background noise this is a good place to start. For me this is a middling 3 / 5. Added to Library? No
I liked this album. Willie Nelson has a great voice. Calm, deep and soothing. I give it 3.5 stars and I would definitely listen to more of these songs on their own. Great songs to listen around a campfire
Well this is a beautiful album of covers so far. The guitar work on some songs is pretty great - definitely uplifts an already pleasant song. Started to lose momentum after while but still a great listen.
liked this WAY more than i was expecting :)
Nice and pretty easy listening versions of some classics. Good for relaxing or as a smooth background for some light conversation. This is hardly real country music, I believe, but Willie's voice is familiar and comfortable. I find it a bit baffling, that this is one of his most successful records and considered a classic.
Country, aber schöne bis sehr schöne Klassiker. Gut!
Slow jams, its a VIBE. Feels like a (mostly?) cover album, don't prefer his versions of the covers i recognize, but they're still enjoyable
I kind of expected more. I don’t know if it would have been as “good” if I didn’t know it was Willie Nelson.
Not nearly as enjoyable as his own stuff. I’d call this one for Willie superfans only.
Great album to play in background of a fancy party. Very easy listening. Nothing special though. I do think Willie's version were very good, just not something I would want to listen to on a regular basis. Did produce some "new" outlaw country after finishing listening.
No surprises with Willie Nelson; pretty much what I expected.
Not a country fan
Very slow and calming album, not too exciting
I enjoyed this and I wasn't sure that I would.
okish
Willie Nelson is a legend. That being said, this album didn’t resonate with me. Some wonderful renditions in what was clearly a passion project for Nelson, but others don’t quite hit the mark. Still, though, was worth the first listen for sure; however I probably will not revisit it.
I found this very listenable and like Nick, nice background country music. Some good covers and this was a nice take on some I didn't know he'd recorded. Decent 3.5/5
Listening to this was great, just some soft background country. I hope the Highwaymen appear on this, I never get round to actually listening to it myself and now I use this list as an excuse to keep holding off on new stuff too.
I've never really listened to Willie Nelson before but was pleasantly surprised by this. It helped that I was familiar with some of the songs. I like how some have been arranged.
Same monotonous tunes
