Previously unknown. Cute. I'm sure he enjoyed making it, but it was all a little too the same so it felt boring.
10 songs Nothing added to my playlist unfortunately. Didn't hate it, but also no song I would seek out again. Pretty good background music for fishing in Club Penguin.
Ive tried Willie a few times and just doesn't work for me. This feels like a load of country versions of classic cheesy American tunes with nothing really to elevate it? What am I missing?
Nah. Doesn't suit Wille Nelson to sing these old crooner tunes. But then what do I know if it sold quintuple platinum? People did also make Mr. Blobby number 1.
Pretty slow album. Kinda was lulled to sleep halfway through. Don’t think it was for me
Seems this was big in the 80s among country loving Americans. Good for them.
Originally considered 3 stars but found out these were all covers. Quite boring but some of his guitar playing was nice.
I get why this album is rated highly, it's Willie Nelson in his national treasure era doing covers, but too be honest I found it a bit boring. His voice is what it is... Very Willie Nelson, full of vulnerability and hillbilly old age, but I'd much rather her ray Charles or Ella Fitzgerald or just about anyone else song these classic songs.
I've got the album but very rarely listen to it - sort of not my favorite music - Willie Nelson sort of doesn't appeal to me. I know he has written a load of songs even some that Frank Sinatra has performed and have become hits but his music reminds me of a down and outer sitting in a bar drunk and desperate.
I didn’t love the experience of this. It was so dreadfully boring as a whole. I will give it a bump for having some pretty big songs that as an individual are perfectly fine. I just don’t want it all meshed together.
This must be a really great record if you a) really care about these songs or b) really care about Willie Nelson. For me, neither is true.
I don't really think this guy should be a singer (and I'm a massive Dylan fan), but he's giving it a good go and in a way I'm happy for him. But not so happy for me having to listen to it.
Very m e l l o w w album of remakes. Willie had so much clout he was able to do what he wanted.
Little bit wet for my liking. Very sad and very downbeat...
Ive tried Willie a few times and just doesn't work for me. This feels like a load of country versions of classic cheesy American tunes with nothing really to elevate it? What am I missing?
It's perfectly fine as background music, not grating, not terrible, but after so many country albums on here I don't think I'll ever come around on the genre. This was a compilation of classic song covers, hence why it was on here.
innecesario disco de versiones. No me agrada su voz . Hay que reconocer que para oir bajito en una reunión tranquila es casi perfecto.
Nice. Listened twice as it’s easy background.
Felt unoriginal and dishonest. This was neither country nor unique…ultimately rather forgettable.
:/
Again, not for me.
Perfectly pleasant but not much else to it. Easy listening but Willie can be a bit dreary. Did almost send me to sleep. Liked the jazzier parts.
I'll start off by stating that I absolutely loathe country music, and when I see "sings American pop standards" my heart sinks. That said, even I can respect the red-headed stranger, even if I've never listened to an entire album through so let's start with his 22nd. The instrumentation is pretty sparse, highlighting Willie's vocals and guitar work. The vibe overall I'd sum up as "pleasant," and the two stand-out songs are "Georgia On My Mind," and "Unchained Melody." Of course, listening to "Georgia..." I'd much rather hear the Ray Charles version, while I think Willie's "Unchained Melody" clears the Righteous Brothers version that I'm more familiar with. I doubt I'd ever listen to this album again, but I didn't hate it.
DNF
sorry willie you seem like a great dude, but i was bored after 2 songs
Gonna get some hate for this, but I really really don't like this album. I find so many more of his records so much more satisfying. Oh well. Different strokes...
2,4/5 Bissl langweilig
An entire album of covers - the only thing Nelson really brings to the table is his voice, which is... not that great ? The arrangements aren't bad, but clearly too slow and restrained for my taste. I didn't hate it, but you probably have to be in a very specific mood to appreciate it. Since I wasn't in that mood today, it mostly bored me. I'll admit it's smooth and sweet though - it could make for nice background music in the right setting (if I lived in a Fallout Vault, maybe ?), and it grew on me towards the end. Still not my kind of music, but at least it's not country, and it's different enough from the other Willie Nelson album on the list to not feel redundant. A nice 2*, but it could have been a 3* on a rainy day. 4/10
Willing and able to smoke down with Mr. Nelson, hopefully we listen to something else when we do...
Meh
I don't know WIllie... to pull off this whole unexpected album of standards thing you need to have a good voice. Not that your voice isn't good in its unique sort of way, but you need like a good good voice. Like Rod Stewart for example. Or Lady Gaga. But even if you don't have the voice, you should have at least put some kind of Willie Nelson spin on these songs. In the end though it was an assembly of some pretty boring, sleepy straight covers of songs I didn't need to hear you sing.
It feels a bit gimmicky like those breathily sung covers that adorn John Lewis Christmas adverts. Also seems obviously where Bobby D got the idea recently. I feel like the point of most of these songs is that they were made for big voices and big arrangements to match the big emotions. These versions make them feel too reduced to me.
holding hands w someones son n going on walks
Not for me, I’m afraid! Not a bad selection of standards, but it’s a little boring imo. Favourite track: Stardust
I like a bit of country, but this was too much country for me
…So this is a cover album. I have no objection to covers, matter of fact I love when an artist takes a great song and makes it new and fresh: Cash doing Hurt; Aretha doing Respect; etc. I hate when they sully a classic: e.g. Madonna’s American Pie. This album took old jazz/ contemporary standards and had Willie sing them. That’s it. His version of Georgia on My Mind is a classic, but aside from that the album is a good listen when Boomer guests come over and you need something non-offensive. Unlike Dusty, he wasn’t using “recently released” songs from black musicians for white audiences, which was appreciated. Much like Dusty and Ray Sings Country/Western, no new ground gained and I don’t know if they should be included here.
it actually sounded pretty good it's just not memorable or replayable enough unfortunately
Nothing bad here but they’re all covers and of the ones I know, the originals are entirely better
Not a fan of this one, makes me think of a small town Texas bar and this is the live music act for the early bird special at 5pm. All covers and I prefer all the original versions more.
Eh. I'd rather listen to the originals vs the covers on this album. Willie is a good artist, but his covers of these songs felt...souless. it was so bland, WHERE IS THE SAUCE
lieblich süss .. und klebt daher ganz stark im gehörgang. ausgezeichnete instrumente und stimme, aber „leider nein“.
Immer schön, dieser Willie Nelson. Aber wenn er eigene Lieder singt gefällt es mir besser
Willie's vocals are fragile and lovely, but an album of covers can't be the best thing he's done.
It's a no for me.. I know he has a legacy, but I couldn't get into the music.
Not really a Willie Nelson fan. He’s ok I guess, but an album of covers isn’t really exciting. I do like the laid back style, that’s the only thing I might come back to this.
This is too country for me for sure !!! but I did enjoy the song all of me
It was fine
Meh. 2.2
Gefällt mir besser als das erste Album von ihm, das hier kam. Etwas jazziger. Aber würde ich nicht nochmal hören.
Country singer doing covers, perfectly pleasant and all that but seriously how did this sell so many copies? It’s just the pop effect of people buying familiarity. Nothing remotely clever or original about this.
willie nelson's best material is in red dead icl
I’m starting to feel like the guy who wrote this book is fucking with us. 1 album before this one is so much better. Willie Sings Elvis > Danzing sings Elvis Any other Willie > Willie sings Elvis
What I really like in an album is someone singing a bunch of boring songs others have sung before. Conceptually this album deserves less than 1/5
Probably not the best introduction to the artist, found it bland, great voice.
I really liked the song about having an ugly Gf
Another molasses slow album. Why not Red Headed Stranger?!? 2/5
Lots of standards in a sad sounding way. Very introspective album. I liked it a lot but might not listen to it again.
Well, this album certainly wasnt for me. Its really just boring covers of 50s pop songs that could put me to sleep. Then imagine my surprise when i found out this guy has 104 albums. I can see why some people like the album tho. Its not a personal favorite, but it has good production and lyrics so i will give this a 2/5. I will not be revisiting this album again. I didnt save any of the songs. Is this album better than yesterday’s album, licensed to ill by the beastie boys? No.
Very slow, but has some bangers
Felt like Country Music with the bumpers up and stabilisers on. Nice enough initially but I feel like you could have taken the vocals from any of the tracks on the album, and rearranged them without being able to tell the difference. In the end it bored the tits off me.
I liked Willie Nelson's other album on this challenge more, this one was too relaxed, chill and overall boring to me. I like the back story of this album, that Willie wanted to do an album if covers, but recording company didn't want him to do it - he did it anyway. It's just not really my thing. The album cover is gorgeous though.
Very soothing and beautiful overall. It wasn’t until I heard Unchained Melody that I realized the entire album is actually made up of covers, which caught me by surprise. The sound has this soft, dreamy quality that feels cinematic, like it could easily be part of the soundtrack to The Princess and the Frog. It has that warm, fairytale-like sound that makes you want to listen to it in the summer, underneath the stars. Imagine someone writing a song about you, and one of the lines is "Although she may not be the girl some men think of as pretty." Damn.... 2.5/5
Another album I’m not sure why is on the list. It sure is different from all other Willie Nelson albums but that’s it.
If this album was a seasoning, it would be flour.
song i went back to first after first full listen: all of me (it sounded like a ratatouille song)
This is a tough one. I did quite enjoy this in the background whilst working, but ultimately it is just a collection of somewhat samey covers..... Hm. I think two is fair, but I didn't dislike it.
I’m sure this is very powerful for certain people.
2 country albums in a row. TWO. At this point it feels like the album generator is actively trolling me! It knows you don’t like country. It knows my soul withers slightly every time a steel guitar twangs. And yet here we are, face‑to‑face with Stardust, a record that’s… well… not exactly a “country album”, but absolutely filed under ‘country artist’, so the dread kicks in anyway. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is in the vague hope that the app it will ease off the country!!
oh hes so sweeetttttt
They were good covers, but not sure why this was on the list?
The recording sounds great, great covers, just not consistant enough to be a classic for me or rated higher
almost fell asleep. calm and chill and that’s abt it. liked the guitar. 4/10 lol
4/10
there is no way some of you guys are rating a willie nelson COVER ALBUM higher than any actually good rap album on this list. ohhh white racists how i hate you all
zzz
In my generation it became blasphemy to dislike this country crooner once everyone saw the joint in his repertoire. But for me, high as he might be, he's still just a country crooner and not what I enjoy.
I mean, sure
Slow, country tinged nothingness.
c’est passable mais ça me gave un peu willie mets y du tien jsp on est tous fatigués ici
0/12 bekannt 5/10 Beste Songs: Blue skies, scarlet ribbons, I can see clearly now
Boring boring boring so boring... Just the same thing repeated with slightly different lyrics for half an hour.
Vanilla songs performed extra vanilla with an annoying voice at the front. This album gives nothing to particularity hate, nor to love. You either like the voice and the standards, or there's absolutely nothing in it for you. I'm in the latter category.
Unmistakable voice covering classic songs
I don’t think this was the best intro. to Willie Nelson. I couldn’t help listening to the songs thinking the originals are better.
peaceful country, probably won't listen again though just not my thing
well at least i knew some songs
простенький, красиво
Not my thing really but it was quite relaxing to listen to!
When I saw Willie Nelson pop up I was excited - I have a lot of respect for him, but have never listened to one of his albums before. This album was not what I expected to be sure, but even coming to understand that this was a record of pop standards, I felt excitement to give this a shot. It proved to be a disappointment. In the end, this just feels like watered down country music to make watered down pop standards. Willie's voice on these tunes is...uncompelling. And the music is plain, boring. It came across like a lounge act to me, frankly. It is certainly pleasant, and I can understand the appeal of Willie Nelson doing something outside of the box like this. And obviously it made a huge mark on music, given it stayed on the country top 100 for TEN years. But for me this record is more of an "oddities bin" find, and came across like a mediocre vanity project.
Really boring and uninspiring covers of some very good songs. Not sure what he thought he was adding to any of them. It's like American Michael Buble
“no touch too heavy, no tempo above a resting heartbeat” were what the album notes said, and this was unfortunately too languid for me
just meh
It's not my cup of tea.
An interesting collection of covers but hardly essential listening.
Nicht so meins
It’s very much a lullaby I love it
Nothing that really excited me here. It was ok and fine for some in the background.
in slaap gevallen
I wanted to like this, but it was really boring.
Not gonna lie. I saw Willie Nelson and thought this would be a hard no. Can't stand Country music as a rule. Then get an album of standards.....an album of quite simple & unique versions of standards. It surprised me and I will admit I kind of enjoyed this. His voice is pretty weak for these kind of songs, but that's part of the charm I guess. 2
Willie shows you can be a good/famous musician and not be able to sing too well
Bad Willie
It's not bad, but exceedingly dull. Each song trying to be more romantic than the last.
What a predictable album.
Torpid
Meh.
Willie Nelson’s voice is nice and soothing, but I’d rather listen to his originals and other recordings of these standards. His interpretations are just sleepy and lacking intensity.
Meh.
Didn’t really listen to it but not bad
492/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
So many covers. Why did he cover Unchained Melody?!
I feel sacrilegious with my rating here. Willie is awesome. His voice sounds great in these songs. They are competently played. But wow, if this isn't a boring, milquetoast collection. Do these add anything to any of these songs?
A bit dull, would rather hear originals.
Not a Friday night, just finished work, had a good week, feeling excited and ready for the weekend album - unfortunately.
low 2 this album feels a bit pointless. its funny at first to hear a country singer doing standards, but his voice and the arrangements bring next to nothing they just plod through them.
Not terrible but mostly forgettable. The covers are way worse than the original songs. I don't particularly like Willie's voice and the music is just plain. 2/5.
I never understand why artists want to do these standards albums that are so unlike their usual musical genres. And I for sure don’t understand why I would have to listen to them. I’d rather listen to a greatest hits album (which aren’t included on this list) than an artist do an album of other people’s greatest hits.
It was a little boring, drawn out, but an interesting look into Willie Nelson's catalog.
Maybe Willie Nelson just inst meant to do covers...of soul classics? Kinda bland - odd how you can take the Ray Price album and has a lot of soul and feeling and this feels cheap?
Fint og hyggelig og sånn. Litt kjedelig, men har ikke noe imot det. Chill vibes. 2/5
Some good covers from Willie but ultimately I felt that it was the original songs that were carrying it, rather than his versions of them.
For a whole album of covers, at least one of them should be better than just “ok”
No thank you.
An album of pop covers doesn't seem like essential listening and id think if we're going to have more willie nelson you could find something better in his catalogue. Of the tracks I knew I didn't think Willie tried anything new or interesting but also he doesn't really have a voice to make a standard take worth hearing. Not so bad to be a 1 but pretty pointless.
Also not keen on cover albums being on the list. He does two wonderful covers - Georgia on my Mind, and Blue Skies. The rest are forgettable and unnecessary. +1 for those two good covers, but the album doesn't need to be here.
Don't think an album full of covers should be on this list. These were particularly dull too. 2, and that may be generous, sorry Willie, but this didn't do it for me.
2nd Willie Nelson album in a row?! I preferred this a lot more. It felt more inspired by the 50s and 60s although being a later release. Story telling was still good, but much preferred the sound of this album. A lot slower, and I think more beautiful. I listened while working, but was still quite invested in what Willie was saying. I didn’t realise they were covers, which I guess shows the quality of his singing as well as song writing. Favourite song: Georgia on my mind.
Voice is still exceptional. Really like the album cover too. This one feels more accessible than the previous. Generally didn't grab me as much especially in the middle. Not sure if it was me or the album but not a huge fan. It definitely some nice songs but it didn't really feel like a collective piece of work, more like a compilation
I know Willie is a legend, but I'm afraid county music is just not my thing.
Beautiful lyrics and songs overall... probably each best enjoyed for me in isolation. September Song is obviously a stunning piece.
2 out of 5. Willie Nelson chose the songs he covered on this album well. He really made them his own.
Tunes are great but almost every one was performed better by someone else
Dreary, dreary, dreary. Even upbeat songs like "blue skies" and "on the sunny side of the street" sound sad, they should sparkle. For me, the vocals lack any emotional connection to the songs, sorry. I can only assume Willie had a dental appointment immediately after the recording session!
i think this might be my least favorite willie. it's such a snooze fest, relatively speaking. he can do any song justice though
Quite boring. Not my cup of tea. Album sounds a bit like a collection of lullabies. Very soothing
This contains a cover of one of my most hated songs ever (Unchained Melody) so, despite me being someone who enjoys a cover version, that didn't bode well. Willie Nelson does get two albums on the list and I recognise this album was a massive hit, but it does seem weird that the man released 77 solo studio albums and the book decided a covers album was one of the two top choices to represent him. Feels a little dismissive. I was mostly ambivalent to this album. Except Unchained Melody which I still hate. 2/5
I mean, meh. Not really my thing I'm afraid.
2,5 boring zzzz
Why is a Country album of basically covers on the list? Spew. Many of these songs have better versions elsewhere. Georgia on my mind has Ella Fitzgerald version, for example. Hell she also did Someone to Watch Over Me. Ella better be on this damned list of Nelson is.
When I first started listening to this album, the songs were a bit interesting to me, mainly because Willie's voice was carrying them. He has a cool voice, very sound, not amazing. But once we got to Unchained Melody, it was clear that his voice, or at least what he chose for the notes, was inferior. I'd equate it with a crappy band with a decent lead singer at a wedding with limited to no energy. Just an inferior album, less than average.
Very boring album, although I guess I did somewhat enjoy the Sunny Side Of The Street cover
Sort of ok
I don't get the appeal, I'm sorry
Zu lahm
Willie Nelson is a justly revered icon, and I appreciate his desire to revisit the songs he loved when he was young. This is pleasant, but I disagree that I needed to hear his take on 10 standards before I die.
Willie, this is a lovely sounding album, but I got very bored I’m afraid.
No estoy en el humor de esta calma y lentitud
boring
Willie Nelson is a justly revered icon, and I appreciate his desire to revisit the songs he loved when he was young. This is pleasant, but I disagree that I needed to hear his take on 10 standards before I die.
This was pretty nice. I don't think Ive ever listened to a willie nelson album before, so for the first one to be a cover album I was a little underwhelmed at first, but by the time it ended, I was disappointed there wasnt more.
Just not for me.
It was interesting listening to an artist that was almost unrecognized here in Europe at that time. Willie Nelson was part of the outlaw movement (more or less started by Johnny Cash) in the country music scene but this album contains only cover versions of standards. While the (actually great) songs are nicely arranged, Nelson's voice and his straight and sometimes even hectic timing ruin much of the vibe known from other artists singing those pieces. Nice try, but doesn't make too much sense to me
I really wanted to like this album. I really want to like Willie Nelson. I remember this being a big hit when it came out, and it was not at all in my music wheelhouse at the time so I ignored it. But I'm older now and I figured maybe I've mellowed enough with age to appreciate this more than back in 1978. The main problem is I still don't really enjoy the standards in general. And Willie's take on them was just boring, making even songs I sort of like into something hard to really listen to. Ultimately it's really just background music, but not in good way. Willie has a nice voice, so it's not a total bust.
Inte dåligt, men segt
Det är coolt att Willie Nelson eller gräs, men det här är trist musik.
I do like some Willie but this is too smooth and easy for me atm, I prefer his self penned songs with an edge
I think it’s a generational thing. Not bad but it just wasn’t for me at all
Excited trepidation as I saw this come up. Excited, because it's Wiilie. And I've never given him a listen. Trepidation, because it's country. But an artist that seems to transcend. Right? Title song, I did not like. Georgia? Not in a class with Ray. Blue Skies? Dull. The rest? Well, my lack of enthusiasm for the genre seems to extend to tge all time greats too. Sorry Willie.
Not a fan of Willie. Sorry! ★★
Can't get past this all sounding really dated and cheesy Don't like this at all
yeehaw. it was soft country which i don’t entirely mind.
This album was fine, but I did find it a bit boring. And it does lose a point for being 100% covers. No disrespect to Mr. Nelson.
Willie Nelson does show tunes. Does them well enough, but why? Why you gotta do Willie dirty like that?
Middle of the road, no edge no grit no offence
Mediocre covers album. Not for me
A slow listen to be honest, would suit them chilled vibey days. Unfortunately, yesterday was not one.
A collection of quiet and slow ballads. Willie sings some classic pop songs. This is decent to play in the background, but kinda boring in any other setting.
Snork
willie has the greatest outlaw run of all time right before this and instead we get fuckin georgia on my mind
Never heard Willie Nelson, I like the style of this album, went in cold knowing any other albums or songs, would listen again to others. 2.5/5
Noodley nonsense...
Really don't understand how an album of covers of the "Great American Songbook" makes it onto a "must listen" list. I've heard all these songs before of course, often by other musicians, and often done better. I just found the whole thing dull. I paused it about halfway through to get something, and almost didn't turn it back on. I'm not sure it falls to the level of 1 bad, but it was definitely not something I'd spin again.
Definitely not for me, particularly the vocals. The guitar work is pretty cool though. Although the mix, for me, was painful. Hearing the raw plucks of the strings on the guitar, that’s cool and all, but it was way too loud. It physically bothered my ears. Which is how I feel about his voice too, it’s just too loud in comparison to the mix and it’s too harsh.
I'm not sure I understand this. I thought WN was a meant to be a countercultural stoner icon, not the purveyor of great-american-songbook crooner-lightweight-cover-versions? Perfectly pleasant and laid-back, but not exciting to me at all I'm afraid
Weird cover versions album. Was it necessary?
Didn't do much for me.
I enjoyed this. Obviously, Willie Nelson is a legend. His voice is great. For what it is, this album is good. I kept wanting the music to do more, but that isn’t the music’s fault (if that makes sense).
Technically good, but not my cup of tea. It's almost a parody of itself. Unless Willie Nelson is so famous that the parodies I've heard are literally making fun of his style?
A cover album of songs I either don't like, or I do like but but not what Willie Nelson makes of them. I'd give it a 1 but it's not quite as bad as the 1s I have given so far. A generous 2 then.
I realized that I knew many of these songs but didn't necessary relate them to Willie Nelson. Now I understand that these are pop standards that he picked. I would like to listen to a proper Willie Nelson written album.
27/1001 :: Willie Nelson - Stardust Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 2 Fav Tracks: Georgia On My Mind I’m gonna start this review by saying I love Willie Nelson… I’ve seen him 3 times. I got up early Sunday morning Woodstock 99 to catch his set, saw him when he did the baseball stadium tour (early 2000s) with Dylan and recently at his Outlaw Fest (TBH though I was there to see Bob Weir). I remember being mesmerized in 99 by a blistering blues set as it was the perfect encore to Metallica’s epic performance the previous night. Frankly I was still high AF but whatever… But every time I see Willie there’s a bit ion badass there. THIS was not that. This album was the toughest Easy Listening I’ve ever encountered. There was some good guitar work but overall it was so slow and so soft… I’m sure it’s great for someone out there are he’s a good singer but it’s just not for me. Sorry Willie, I still love you…
It feels like Willie Nelson, or someone who may as well be Willie Nelson, appears at least monthly, and they're always basically the same. Which is to say rubbish. This one is on the better end of that scale I suppose, but it's still very unemotional, stoic crap.
I just wasn't in the mood for this. It's too sickly sweet. I don't dislike cover albums, but my general feeling is unless you can do something interesting with the original then don't bother. I don't particularly enjoy the originals of many of these songs, so that doesn't help. This feels like a filler album. It's not hateful, but it's not great either.
Not quite my thing. Couple alright songs on here but nothing I would revisit. Cool that it's one year older than I am.
The score is not for the quality of music or the talent of Willie, its just that an album of cover versions doesn't do it for me. No matter how good they are.
Halfway through, and my man hasn't bested 90 bpm. What a slow album. Surprised to hear Blue Skies. Didn't realize that it's a standard. Oh gosh, September Song. Nelson obviously considers himself a crooner, but this album belongs 30 years in the past. Released in 78, it feels self indulgent. Oh, it's an album entirely of standards. I guess that's why it feels so idiosyncratic and slow. Hey, On the Sunny Side of the Street is 120 bpm. We did it. In summary, an inoffensive background album. No fun to actively listen to, though. A 2. Not terrible, but forgettable and not something I'd seek out.
I don't typically care for cover albums
Strange Willie Nelson album. It was pretty lackluster overall, so not something I think I would ever choose to listen to again. 2.4/5
This was fine but I'm not in love with the pop standards he was covering. Pretty boring, honestly. 2/5
Found this one quite boring. Music felt like it was playing in a lounge on an old school cruise. Unchained Melody is always a banger though.
This is not Willie’s best record (see: Red Headed Stranger) and I’m not sure why it’s even on this list? The covers are good but a bit of a snoozer.
I would love to hear some Willie Nelson ... but not Willie singing standards. Also should cover albums really classify as albums I should listen to before I die?
Willie Nelson seems like a cool guy in person but all I can think about this album is that he got really high and rode the elevator up and down singing along to the Muzak.
I liked the concept, but the songs blended together and didn't pull me in.
Song I liked: blue skies. I'm debating whether to give these "most of these songs are boring except for one which is mildly good" albums a 2 star rating or a 3 star rating.
His 22nd album ! 22 albums! It's an album of cover songs. His persona is 'outlaw country music' This is a departure and an album of pop covers. A very mellow album. Sipping whiskey on the porch kind of thing. There's nothing discernibly bad about this album. It's...umm...nice.
Not my type of music.
Nice and soft but kind of Boring 2-3
#619. This is, at this point, and old timey country sing singing covers of very old timey pop tunes. The catch is, he's actually fairly terrible at singing, so all of these are the worse version of each song. Not sure that anyone would be honestly interested in this for any reason. 2/5: no, thanks.
I liked listening along to this, it was easy. But Tim told me they were covers and not originals so probably not worth more than 2.
Perfect napping music. Nothing interesting to listen to here I'm afraid
Sad songs and waltzes aren't selling this year
Not my bag
Hey, would you like to listen to some Willie Nelson? Not really. Would you like to listen to Willie Nelson do standards covers? Uh, no? All respect to Willie Nelson. Man's a legend. Never met him, but sure he's a great guy. But this just isn't my thing and these ratings tend to be personal opinions. So my opinion of this is it's just not my thing.
This is #day301 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… oh well, another country record. Or, is it? The instrumentation is pretty pleasant, at least compared to the rest of the country I've heard so far, with some jazz and blues here and there. But anyway, this isn't an album I'd ever choose to play again. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day302.
I started out not liking this one and thinking I'd rate it worse than "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive" but this one grew on me. I really appreciated On the Sunny Side. This being an album of covers, the song selection was cool but I questioned whether Willie Nelson did some of the originals justice. I think this deserves better than a 1 but a 3 may be pushing it even though I went back for some songs later on in the day. If I could give it a 2.5 I would.
Formulaic, not keen on the delivery, and don't see the point of him recording all these standards, especially Unchained Melody, other than to be a crowd pleaser obviously...
A little miscellaneous. Too many songs about states.
Oh wow! More 70s! Hot take: I don't think an album of covers should be on the list.
While not the outlaw country album I was expecting, which is one of the few types of country/folk music I can actually stand, it's not that much better. Willie's voice is quite nice, the orchestrations are pleasing and playing is not annoying. The songs are however very much in the same realm as Finnish "iskelmä", which means kinda like schlager but without the folk stuff, so popular songs made as generic as possible. I did not know Unchained Melody could sound this bland.
Unnecessary.
2.5
Langweilige Coverversionen
Embarrassing mellow and thin.
I get why people like it but this has always been so boring to me. Usually love me some sweet Willie. Early on in my music nerd career this taught me not to accept received wisdom on what are an artist's best albums. Grateful for that.
Pleasant and well-executed mid-tempo songs; organ, guitar and drums sound overly lush. Album drags a bit towards the end. If you’re neither familiar with nor into the American songbook, the songs probably don’t reveal their societal and political meaning as well as the undercurrent that revels beneath their saccharine execution. Best when Nelson leaves the comfort zone and turns to more interesting vocal melodies (unchained melody). In sum, I lack to the understanding of the originals to appreciate the value of this collection of covers.
Niks aparts
Ja, nei
2.5
Thoroughly pleasant, but never one of the 1001 must listen to albums surely?
Willie Nelson sing songs nobody really wants to hear? Ok there are maybe a track or 2 that didn’t actively irritate me.
This is a tough one to rate. I like Willie Nelson's voice a lot, but he's a songwriter and he wrote none of these songs. That's a shame. Even though I'm not going to rate it high, I actually could see putting it on again in the exact right mindset.
I like Willie, but this one was a snoozer.
The best part was when it ended
I guess Stardust is a serviceable album but it is still super repetitive and uninteresting. This is my problem with Willie Nelson after listening to two of his albums, the fact that while his music sounds pleasant, that one style of music is all he really has with him never really deviating and trying to do anything interesting that his contemporaries have not done already. I guess it is better than his other album Red Headed Stranger since there aren't any annoying horn sounds and the songs here did have more time to sink in seeing as they didn't end before they could. I just really don't know what else to say, this album is listenable, just incredibly forgettable. Best Song: September Song Worst Song: Don't Get Around Much Anymore
Maybe at some point this album was noteworthy for some reason but today it feels unoriginal and boring. With cover songs sometimes an inspired vocal or amazing arrangement can lift it above the ordinary (and indeed above the original) - sadly, neither happens here.
I’m not a big fan of covers/standards albums and this didn’t change my mind. Nice vocals and I enjoyed “ On The Sunny Side of The Street” but won’t return to this album!
It's not bad, but it feels like it lacks individuality or distinction. That's not helped by the cover song. But his overall sound was almost anachronistic feeling. Like an older sound being mixed with newer sounds in a way that didn't mesh super well.
I was enjoying it until I realised it was a cover album. Sorry but you can't have a cover album in this list surely.
Good if I was trying to fall asleep I guess
Willie Nelson's "Stardust" is an album that feels slow and drawn out. His vocals don't quite hit the mark for me, and the overall pace of the album makes its 36-minute runtime feel much longer. While there are moments of musical beauty, the album lacks the energy and engagement that would make it a more enjoyable listen.
I just got nothing out of this, went in one ear and out the other
I’m obviously too young for this cause I didn’t realize (except for Unchained Melody) that these were all cover songs. Didn’t mind it though but not something I would reach for again.
It’s a bold move to have cover albums as part of this list. An album like this needs to have so much going for it to make it worth saying this is more worth hearing than originals. That is not the case for this album. It’s fine, and at moments it was fun to hear a Willie Nelson take on a classic, but I think this album could be retired from the list and not a single person would miss it.

Bit too easy listening for me. There’s no doubt that Willie Nelson has done much better than this covers album, these don’t even approach being definitive versions
I would say I was pretty disappointed. He seems to not have a great voice and struggles with some notes and is otherwise unimpressive. The music is relatively interesting with some fun organs etc. but I think he gets carried by the lyrics and songwriting. It’s fine
Music like this is the reason I signed up for this, I wanted to be shown music that I would've never heard of or listened to otherwise and that's exactly what is. Personally, not my cup of tea and not a listen I would do again but I can 100% get the appeal, it's peaceful, it's calming, it's relaxing and Willie has talent for sure, my fav track was "All of me"
I'm not sure I could be any more bored.
Meh
4/11/2025: Just covers of classics, not sure why this is considered so good.
It might be heresy to disparage willie, but I didnt like this. A standards album? How is this needed? To be fair i don't love the Nilsson or Dr John standards Lps either. If you're going to do a covers lp, pick weird songs that never charted (siouxsie through the looking glass, martin gore Counterfeit EP) or a songbook (jennifer warnes doing cohen, ella doing gershwin, tho maybe not 4+ cds of it). If I know 95% of the songs on your standards record well enough to sing them myself, im likely not interested in hearing you do them unless your take is so new (devo satisfaction, most Residents covers) that i can't help but be in awe.
I though Willie was a C&W star? Sorry, not really my bag at all!
Not for me
I found this one to be a little too melancholy for my taste. While I didn't dislike the album, most of the songs felt like they should be listened to on a rainy day while curled up under a blanket. That has its place, of course, and isn't a bad thing, but does detract from the impact the album had when judging it as "great" or not. I think adding more variety/mixing up the vibes a bit would have made it a much more memorable album all the way through. Overall: 2/5
The mysteries of music. One of my favorite artists. Red Headed Stranger is one of my top favorite albums. This though, no matter how often I listen to it, just sounds like easy listening and it drives me mad.
I get it, if you like it. Vocal-forward country with some popular covers on the album. The bluesier Don't Get Around Much Anymore made my list, and Stardust is a good track. Can't imagine this being many folks favorite version of Georgia on My Mind. Fine for what it is, it isnt for me.
Quite boring actually.
Got half way before turning off.
Not much to say here - don't love the Unchained Melody cover but respect it. Probably won't return to this but it's pleasant enough, even if a little tiresome though its relatively short runtime. A little shocked that this album was so big.
Lidt tamt. Ingen hårde kanter her....
Mundharmonika var ikke det Unchained Melody manglede
Not my thing. Chill though.
Cover album. A little bit dull
Not the country music I was expecting from Willie Nelson, but this was pleasant enough easy-listening gentle crooning, although it is hard to imagine putting this on and actively listening to it.
Middle of the road
Ok
Again I like the harmonica-play more than his vocals. Nonetheless a nice and easy listen. 2,5
Un album pas super bon que j'aime bien. Mais on s'entend, ça pourrait être Stardust 10 fois de suite et ce serait meilleur, surtout la deuxieme partie du disque.
This album features stripped-down versions of various cover songs. Nelson's weathered vocals add a softness to all of them...although I can't say any of them are improvements over the originals.
I’m not keen on covers usually. These are no exception to the rule. Pleasant enough but not gonna light my fire.
I truly admire Willie Nelson, and I enjoy most of his work, but I'm simply not American enough to understand the appeal of this.
I have respect for Willie, but this is sooo boring :(
Willie, bless your soul, what is this party at the retirement house?
Meh, this is exactly the kind of music I would not listen to. I can see the musical prowess that went into this, but I'd never ever ever listen to this.
not bad. just really boring. it’s just a fucking snoozefest
It’s don’t know what to say except please stop giving me country albums i don't think i can take it anymore
suburban. I'm so sick and tired of this sounds, it's not terreble, simply plain. By plain I mean white. Love, countryside, white male melancholy, all those stuffs...cliche subject and mild sound. Again, it does not sound terrible, but I feel like it's worse than terrible.
Meh. 2/5
Classic of classics
I don’t like cover albums and I don’t like slow cover albums. It’s good, but I really don’t like it.
It's fine, a bit boring though
I infamously gave Johnny cash a 2 for the man comes around , an album that I ended up playing a ton and is easily under valued . ( I did get it Johnny a club day at Miami ) Stardust has similarities , it’s a cover album , the instrumentals are underspokn . I have generally stuck with a 2 for this beautiful but monotone albums and I don’t think I’ll regret this one
it was.... nice? mostly boring
not my type of music, listening to this on a casual 9-5 is not it
Meh. I appreciate what he did here. Not a giant fan of Willie, but I have to respect it. Reminds me of Johnny Cash's covers of songs and releasing late in his life - but...the incredible thing Cash did is cover songs from all over the place, including current songs like NIN - which is just so intense and sad when you watch the video it is amazing. Many hate it but I absolutely love it. This album is sort of a snoozer - it's about exactly what I would expect it to sound like before I even started listening to it. It's a lot of older slow mellow songs redone in his style, but nothing completely awesome here. I keep comparing to Cash - but what Cash did was totally revise the originals in his own style - this was like just putting Willie's voice into an old song - which to me wasn't very exciting. I'm going to go a little lower here because I just don't think the goal here was accomlished.
I said no country and Willie Nelson is famously country, so... we'll see. Very weird knowing some of these songs. I'm not really a fan of these interpretations but after 5 songs, they're not entirely unpleasant. It's almost jazz country? Realizing now that I don't think I've ever actually heard Willie Nelson before. I would never choose to listen to this album, but it was a lot better than I expected and there are some beautiful moments. Really fascinating that he wanted to make an album of his favorite pop songs from his childhood with Booker T. Jones developing the instrumental arrangements, which quite frankly shine in several songs.
Ósköp tilþrifalítið og meinlaust. Minnti á söngvara að spila róleg coverlög á kokteilbar. Skil ekki hvað þessi plata er að gera á þessum lista, Willie á betra skilið.
Laid-back, vocal-based songs is probably my least favorite type music as there's usually not much to catch my ear. Not saying that Stardust is bad—the vocals here are great, and the instrumentation is… fine, I guess. I just didn't particularly care for any of the songs here since this kind of music is not for me. It was a little underwhelming. 5/10
Willie or won’t he release something that is not BORING
I respect Willie Nelson, but I’m not a fan of his voice. I listened to the whole album which was not unpleasant and had some nice highlights, however I will not return to this album.
Musically, this is fine. However, I’m not sure why it makes the 1001 list and I can’t imagine ever listening to it again.
Nice but not for me
честно не дослушала мб потом вернусь но у меня аллергия уже на губную гармошку
Very Willie Nelson and a lot of cover songs
Annoying voice, mostly covers, commercial sound production: really not my thing.
I like Willie but this record seems out of place. Well done, but not for me.
Ihan passelia kappaletta, mutta ei omaan makuun toiminut oikein mikään.
Halfway through I realized these are all covers. I thought some of the titles were familiar. Sunny side of the Street was on that bluegrass album as well. All of Me was particularly lovely and it’s not surprising to me that it’s a Billie Holiday song. It’s kind of a sleepy album and I think that’s just Willie’s style. Very mellow, almost melancholy. Aside from my personal subjective taste I can’t say there’s a flaw to it, it’s just not for me. It’s pleasant, but it’s like looking at someone else’s memories. I appreciate the beauty but I’m not connected to it very deeply. Some of the original versions of these songs go hard and I think I would’ve preferred a compilation album of the originals than Willie’s versions.
Good old Willie! Wow, this album came out in 1979 so I guess his voice has always sounded like that. Weird this album came out when they were in their "Outlaw" phase when it's such a chill rendition of old hits. To me, this album is fine. Not my thing.
Cover album, a little boring. 1001?
Like lying in a Lukewarm bath that is rapidly getting cold. There were moments when I thought I was enjoying it, but then I just wanted to move on and get out of the bath. Made me go back and listen and appreciate his country music.
Meh...don't dislike WN, but uninspired covers don't really get me excited. 2/5
