Lazer Guided Melodies

Lazer Guided Melodies is the debut album by English space rock band Spiritualized. This space rock / dream pop / shoegaze album has lengthy, minimalist music tracks with hypnotic effects like echos or distortion, and breathy, obscured vocals. It's been described as one of the best dream pop albums by Pitchfork. I loved the vibes from the album. It felt otherworldly, soothing, and richly textured. This was an exciting and interesting album, so I highly recommend it.

This album had me tearing up. So incredibly beautiful. This album is definitely going on my backpacking playlist.

Full disclosure: I love Spiritualized. This may not be my favorite album of theirs, but I still loved the way it made me feel like I was floating, ethereal, weightless. I see a lot of reviewed noting that this didn't "grab" the listener, and I agree, this is not the thing for when you want pathos, melody, hooks, driving rhythms. This is for when you want to suspend reality and float in space a bit. These guys invented the genre, and I'm here for it. 4/5

Listened Before? N This is great background music. It also feels a bit ahead of its time. I really enjoyed listening to it and they're talented musicians but I don't think I'd put it on just to listen to. Maybe if I were super high? Anyway, another good one this week. Added to Library? Nostalgic and hypnotising

Some was OK but the Space action was not working today

I like this less than their prior 1001 offering. The production is not as inspiring and the guy’s voice is a bit of a bummer. “Shine a light” had a few neat things going on. It made me think of Sigur Ros, but Sigur Ros could maintain that level for an entire album.

After hearing over 900 albums I’m really over the Brit Pop shoegaze space rock scene. I thought their subsequent album, Ladies and Gentlemen was quite mediocre and this is even less enjoyable and like I said, I’m really over this sound.

This is the second spiritualized album on the list. Even though I think I preferred the other one (floating in space), this is still the excellent mix between ambient, rock, and drone I love.

Interestingly different

An effects driven record that feels one part 60s "retro" and one part "modern" 90s sound, Even with heavy reverb on many tracks, each instrument has time to grow, swell and burst. A psychedelic trip through electronica and rock, its a trip back to an era when the most popular TV show was X-Files and with this album, you can tell.

Very splendid and well produced album

I think I'm spiritualized enough, thanks. Impressive that I disliked this album almost to the same extent I liked the previous "Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space" I got here some months ago.

Pleasant surprise here. Dream pop/space rock that does a good job of layering without feeling overly ethereal. Sounds a little reminiscent of an early version of some of Kasabian's work. Album fades a bit toward the end as the tracks become longer and slower and more instrumental. Standouts are "I Want You" and "Run"

Sleep inducing but in a pleasant way. Would work miracles on a long haul flight with some noise cancelling headphones. 🎧🎧

Slow plodding atmospheric music. They are obviously talented, but this is music for bed time.

Reminds me of very chilled out Madchester, Stone Roses, Primal Scream (Scottish, yes I know), Happy Mondays. Very relaxed. Absolutely not what I was expecting at all, knowing nothing about the band. It's all right. VERY chilled. This is for the morning after, isn't it? We're all coming down and listening to this record that is going absolutely nowhere. Eh. 2.5 / 5 stars.

More the odd Melody rayher than lazer guided

The evolution from Spacemen3 through this and then onwards was a thing of beauty and a very happy thing for me

I like the ambient noodling, but I prefer Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. I like that it's different to a lot of stuff. The horns and keys washing in and fading out amongst the other bits and bobs is great I'm not usually a fan of soundscapes, but they do this very well.

One day, someone will need to educate me on why Spiritualized are held in amazing regard. Can't shake the feeling that I might be missing something.

Today my horizons are being broadened further still with another band I’ve never heard before. Spiritualized leads me to expect some trippy psychedelic stuff, so let’s listen and find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: You Know It’s True, Smiles This was a delight. It is a deluge of harmonies and synths. I’m not one to regularly partake of the devil’s lettuce, but imagine that a night in a cosy Amsterdam room with this playing would bring a really mellow high. There seem to be positive vibes all round, with lyrics about love and happiness. Truly, despite this being a repeat of what I’ve already said, this really was a delightful album. It’s just the best word for it.

Ok so the album flowed very nicely from song to song, and i get the feeling it would be better if I was on whatever drugs the band was on when they made it, but I didn't enjoy it. It was slow and soothing, bit in a sleepy way not a calming way.

Didn't seem that special

I had heard a Spiritualized album before (the big one), but this one may have made even more of an impression on me. Spacey and atmospheric at points, epic and bombastic at others. Very surprised to learn this released in 1992, it sounds a lot more modern than many other albums of its time. I really enjoyed this listen, and hope I remember to come back to it.

That felt proto-post rock, just with synthesizers. I quite liked it. Very chill

Oh fascinating! An album and band I've never heard of and have little to no frame of reference for. At first blush, I notice it's got a slightly English vibe and I'm not surprised to read that it is in fact from England. I get a slight Oasis-ey undertone, but not a lot there. I'm loving the weird and lengthy dreamscapes that for once aren't filled with unpleasant noises-- Symphony Space I'm looking at you. This album is an interesting take on Space Music as we discussed earlier in the week regarding space music pioneer Jean-Michel Jarre. This is obviously very different, but attempts to meld more traditional 90's English rock with space music. I think the result is appreciably nice! Woah, Shine a Light is a really gorgeous intro and a lovely sound! Other tracks are like with their orchestral and massive guitars. Really a special album!

The industry monster was pushing Let It Come Down heavily in 2001 and it seemed like for a couple months or so that was the only music that existed. I remember the album packaging included a 3d embossment of a pigtailed girl with her eyes closed. Until now, I had no idea this album preceded it by about 10 years and now I understand. This album is amazing, nearly impeccable. Shine a Light IS impeccable. The balance of the album is just amazing. It's drone-y and easy to get lost in the reverb and feedback. What a great find.

Like every Spiritualised album, lots of lush loveliness occasionally let down by excessive noodling.

If it's one thing I love, it's psychedelic music. And this, this is certainly psychedelic music. This album is pretty good if I do say so myself. The shoegaze and spacey instrumentation on this album is pretty crazy. My personal favorites are Shine a Light and Angel Sigh. Those two songs really do show off the spacey nature of this album pretty well. The way the vocals kind of blend into the music as well is also pretty neat. These two songs are without a doubt my favorites, but all the songs are pretty good. The only song I'm not too hot on is Symphony Space. I don't know. The ambient and spacey nature of this track, as much as I like it on other songs, didn't click for me too much. It kind of sucks as it is the only instrumentals on the record but I don't really connect with this one. It just went on for too long and didn't do much else to impress me. In all honesty, though, this album is good. I'd give it a 8/10, pretty good in my opinion.

I have no idea what to expect here. Never heard of it and the album are is pretty obscure. Cool though! Ghost tits! lol Well I listened to this while walking Mia. Thoughts: Ethereal, hum drone, reminded me of Tame Impala a lot, and a male version of Mazzy Star. Slow, mellow. I liked it.

I mean. Do I wanna go back and listen to it? Not really. Barely got excited to listen to any of it. There were some points where it was more enjoyable noise rock than normal. See how it breaks the mold of traditional rock. But I’m not jumping to listen to it again

I was a huge fan of Gentlemen We Are in Space, and this has the same qualities I loved, just with less impactful tracks. It's a mixture of psychedelic dream pop and lush space rock full of strange sound effects reminiscent of early industrial music or contemporaries like Stereolab. I enjoy the slight modulations in these long tracks. In "I Want You", I can hear Madchester in the vocals and groove, but shoegaze in that bass and guitar distortion. The lengths of the second half are dramatically longer than the first, and yet it's all very digestible and entertaining, capable of hiding in the background or entertaining me as I dissect each song's components and analyzing how its wall of sound changes over time. I guess there were a few tracks that I didn't care for too much like "Take your Time" and "Angel Sigh", but it easily blended in the background and was soothing at the least. I do think an hour was too long.

"Take Your Time" was mesmerizing. This is a good album to zone out with. "Shine a Light" started strong and then went off the rails. This wasn't a bad way to pass some time.

They've conned themselves 5 stars. It's a 4* album, with a beautiful floaty feeling, but rules are rules, and inclusion of a jew's harp is mandatory +1*

For all the ratings I’ve given throughout my 1001 Albums journey so far, however considered or arbitrary, one of my biggest regrets is giving Spiritualized’s “Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space” a 2. I’ll admit that my initial impression was one of severe boredom, but I wasn’t giving myself time to adjust to its lush sonic world: there are some transcendent tracks on there. So, I’ve been eager to have the chance to reassess Spiritualized with this, their first album from 1992. “Lazer Guided Melodies” is full of slow burns and blissed out waves: clouds, haze and all the organ. Most of the songs alternate between two chords (the same two, in different keys) but I’m fine with that: the beauty lies in spending time in this world, letting it envelop us, wash over completely. The lullaby introduction of “You Know Its True”, the crushing slow build of “If I Were With Her Now”, the tender ballad of “Step Into the Breeze” (listen out for spine-tingling one-note strings!), the slightly raga-leaning “Sway”… they’re all enchanted lakes to get lost in and soothe the soul. Crucially for its runtime, “Laser Guided Melodies” isn’t a complete snooze-fest and the arrangements are reasonably dynamic. Tempos shift and change across the running time as the band flirt with shoegaze and give their drummer a reason to exist. “I Want You”’s palpable energy calls to mind Primal Scream, while “Run” is a nice homage (and, whisper it… vast improvement) to Velvet Underground. Later, “Shine a Light” represents Spiritualized tipping their hat to gospel, with a very noisy crescendo at the end. Finally, I must shout out “200 Bars”: the premise of this last track, a voice literally counting out 200 bars of music which slowly crystallise into a song, is inspired. As the voice doing the counting fades, the lead vocal sings “I’m losing track of time in 200 bars”… genius. It does hit a bit of a lull in the middle: “Symphony Space” is the most indulgent moment, a shapeless wallow leaving no impression. “Take Your Time”, following it, is also feels a little too lethargic. But it’s still good wallowing music, and I’m sure will hit much harder if I’m in the right mood. Maybe Spiritualized albums demand multiple listens, or maybe they demand a certain dreamlike state, or time of day. But I liked this one so much more for giving it time, and feel ready to return to “Ladies and Gentlemen”… their music plays the long game.

Yeah this one’s a gem

If ever there was a contest to pick the most self-indulgent, "overrated" act in music history, Spiritualized would have a great opportunity to win the cup. And the first three quarters of this debut album prove it time and again. Self-indulgence is not even a passing flaw here, it's the whole "raison d'être" behind the band's existence. Which makes such claims that they produced so-called "essential" albums quite dubious, if you wanna know about my personal opinion. Let's go into specifics: in *Lazer Guided Melodies*, Spiritualized played neo-psychedelia without the bite or sense of fun of a Brian Johnston Massacre. They wrote middle-of-the-road rock songwriting without the live energy of The Stone Roses. They aped "motorik" kraut without the relentless drive of a Neu!. And they designed electronic-oriented rock without the groove of a Primal Scream... In other words, they didn't do much, in spite of all the energy they spent. Do you think I'm harsh here? OK, answer this question first: what has Jason Pierce to offer, really--apart from using his bland, timid voice to mumble shapeless syllables and tasteless, unoriginal melodies *over the same three frigging chords from one track to the next*??? Is the title of that debut LP supposed to be ironic? If that's the case, the joke is unfunny. Those melodies are not "lazer-guided", they are on automatic pilot mode. And consequently, almost none of them are memorable. Sure, most of the time, the music itself sounds extremely "spacey".. But there's no clear intent in it, no clear throughline that could send you to the stars and beyond. The fuel on Pierce's rocket goes "pop" and then stays stuck on the ground. And as he and his band trip out in the sterile, artificial soundscapes they're so keen on creating around themselves, all you can do is watch them from the ground with a dumfounded look on your face. I can't see "outer space" in the backdrop of their drug-addled routine, only a damn Hollywood green screen. By the way, and speaking of "drugs", I don't need to take heroin or LSD to turn this album into a "good" one. The album should make me *feel* like I'm on heroin or LSD *without me having to take the damn drugs*. There lies the *huge* difference... I can sense devil's advocates already preparing their arguments here. Something in the likes of: "You're tone-deaf: listen to all the gorgeous arrangements Pierce wrote and performed!" Well, I'm not denying the man has a keen ear for sonic details, in spite of his laziness and lack of imagination when it comes to pure songwriting. The thing is, Pierces piles up those arrangements on top of one another without ever considering which ones should be emphasized so that his music succeeds in leaving a lasting impression for most audiences. You might retort that it's my fault, that I should pay more attention to the layers and layers of sounds he and his bandmates recorded. But, to me, it's *their* fault. It's their godamn job to select the best elements in a piece of music so as to make them stand out. If everything is buried in the mix--every little guitar inflexion, every synth drone, every tabla and echo and effect and whatnot--should I be blamed for not letting myself go? If no real epiphany, no real climax gives meaning your repeated melodic lines overstuffed by so many details around them, should I blame my own expectations? Or conversely, is the "product" at fault here? You tell me. In the meantime, here's a quick reminder: less is more, very often. And very often, this record forgets that. It's the drugs Pierce is selling that are the problem, not the drug-addict that I am (read: "music-addict"). Everything I've said so far is about the "first three quarters" of the album, remember? Well, here's what I'm thinking about the last quarter: in the middle of "Shine A Light", something clicked at last, and it was a welcome surprise. The climax of this track is excellent, and it's as if the LP came alive at the eleventh hour. Right after this climax, "Angel Sigh" was also a pretty convincing cut. The walls of noisy guitars on those two songs woke me up, I imagine... But they're not the main reasons those two tracks work out and the other ones don't for me... Sure, those two songs display the sort of noisy-yet-melodic shoegazy stuff that a later post-rock act such as Mogwai--criminally left aside in Dimery's list--will later accomplish (and this even if Mogwai performed such "walls of noise" ten times better than Spiritualized). Yet, as welcome as those electric guitar shenanigans are, those two tracks are actually good mostly because Pierce finally decided which arrangements in them should be their *true* backbone (remember what I said earlier abou "arrangements"?). In "Shine A Light", it's the horn section, and in "Angel Sigh" it's the cellos. Both are hypnotic, intense, and great. And they serve the songs right, thus saving this record from a 0/5 grade, as far as I'm concerned. Unfortunately, a couple of good tracks towards the end can't *fully* redeem this album for me. The last cut, *200 Bars* even emphasizes what is generally wrong with Spiritualized's music in my book. Yep, this piece is too goddamn long (100 bars too long, by my count), and it seems that its writer/composer knows it. Which why the whole thing is even mentioned in the lyrics... I can appreciate the self-deprecatory, tongue-in-cheek irony here, don't get me wrong. But when the line between earnestness and self-parody is so thin, as it is the case here, it's no surprise that a lot of folks in an audience start raising their eyebrows. Maybe it means that you're not exactly mastering what it is you want your music to say. Maybe it means you're favoring "style" over "substance", and start to lose the thread that could tell you which is which. And maybe--just maybe--it means that you're an excellent musician and creator, but that when it comes to this list, you should leave room for even more stellar creators. 1001 is a finite number after all. Elk nummer van de eerste helft van dit album kun je gebruiken in de soundtrack van een film waarbij het hoofdkarakter allerlei perikelen, met een hoop kleerscheuren en op de bek gaan, heeft overleefd en gaat beginnen aan de rest van z'n leven. In de tweede helft gaan de voetjes pas echt van de vloer. Niet omdat er gedanst kan worden, maar omdat zwaartekracht plots is afgeschaft. Enige puntje van kritiek: De laatste 2 nummers maken het album voor mij net iets te lang.

Bland

Couple of nice tracks on this, but not sure i'll be coming back for any of them. "Shine a Light" stands out above the rest of the album so it's understandable that it has vastly more plays on Spotify than any of the other tracks.

Boring. Dull. There are plenty of good ambient albums and this is not one of them.

This was really relaxing and honestly just really nice. I feel like I restate the same things a lot but it was just a calm album.

Very interesting album, very experimental.

Spiritualized - very chill, instrumentation nice, kind of choir like. Sounds like stone roses but a bit wilder. Symphony space a bit boring, first song a bit too choirey. Shine a light - uplifting, spacey, experimental, love the track, what a finish Long songs towards the end Good overall album, not always the most recognisable singles. But all together it makes a pretty nice listen!

It took me three listens to get into the right mindset to enjoy it. But when I got there, this ambient space rock was a great experience.

Full of 70s era psychedelia without any of the elements of dissonance common for that time. It drives on and on but never ceases to be beautiful and uplifting. One criticism would be that there are quite a few parts that sound verrryy Stone Roses. Not necessarily a bad thing but I did have to check who came first (SR by a few years). They're a bloody consistent bunch too, have been steadily releasing for a solid 30 years now.

It's good stuff, I discovered the We are floating in Space album not that long ago and liked that as well. I always dig some space rock.

Good headphone music to get lost in: a detailed, layered soundscape. Listened at work, but would listen again with an experience enhancement agent of some kind. Enjoyable, but doesn’t break new ground.

Aw, too soon! Only just had ladies and gentlemen, hoped they'd space them out a bit. Ha. Pun not intended. Anyway, love this most low key Spiritualized album. Sometimes even more than aforementioned masterpiece. Certainly Shine A Light is one of the best songs they ever did. Everything builds so gently and beautifully, gliding into a blissed out haze. Elsewhere, both If I Were With Her Now and Take Your Time's one-paced, effortlessly rolling groove take some beating. Angel Sigh blows your socks off, Sway is simply gorgeous. This album starts and finishes so strongly. I'm not as fond of I Want You and the reworking of the Velvet's Run, Run, Run, but they're both still fun. Plus you get to have a little sleep and a float in the breeze in the middle of the album.

Fine, I suppose.

I'd always meant to listen to Spiritualised but had never got around to it, so thanks to 'the project' for finally getting me there. Having listened, I'm slightly regretful it's taken me so long, as I like this a lot. Layered, textured and atmospheric, this album sweeps over you and carries you along in its wake. Apparently the genre is space rock. The four coloured movements all have quite distinct auras. With a technically stronger singer this could have been perfect. I'm looking forward to 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space' coming up. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: If I Were With Her Now Date listened: 07/01/23

There was a total of one song I enjoyed & this album as a whole got under my skin for some reason

I feel like I could listen to the output of this band pretty much perpetually, but nothing in particular of it really sticks with me.

Skimmed

spiritualized's lazer guided melodies was overall interesting, but eh. i was surprised it was released in 1992 when it has such a modern sound. spiritualized did create a very ambient album that was relatively easy to listen to. i was surprised when there were vocals on these tracks. the vocals weren't bad but they didn't add much. the focus was on the actual music in the end, and the vocals could almost be distracting at times.

This was enjoyable enough, and it was incredibly ethereal and ambient. But it may have been too much so, as it just didn't do much for me. I didn't feel like anything stood out; it was just background music for me. Again, this wasn't bad. I wouldn't really seek this out again, nor did this inspire much commentary, nor do I feel like it really adds much to this project, so I'm ultimately feeling pretty indifferent while rating this.

Could see this growing in me

Like a softer smashing pumpkins or Radiohead. Never heard of these guys before but this was a relaxing album.

Our second from this group I believe, and after two albums I'm not sold. The last was much more enjoyable for me. This one isn't bad, but it feels pretty aimless for me--ironic that this one feels more like it's floating in space as opposed to lazer-guided with the melodies. Most of it whizzed by me pretty nondescript, and then there was a stretch of three songs I enjoyed quite a bit. Maybe a little Stockholm syndrome at that point, but yeah, overall, it wasn't much. Not good, not bad. Pretty sure I'd axe it from the list. Favorite tracks: Take Your Time, Shine a Light, Angel Sigh. Album art: Actually quite cool, some liquid metal people dancing in nothingness. Is it supposed to be against a white or black background? I like the black better. 2.5/5

I really need to be listening to more Spiritualized. They have such a unique sound.

This album was way too long for how much substance was actually on this. Having what felt like five minute interludes was rough. The album never felt like it actually started which may have been the point but it was missed on me. 2.2/10

One doesn’t think of Spiritualized as understated but in this case the record’s undeniable interest and, ultimately, power sort of sneaks up. “Shine and Light” (what a bass or baritone sax-ing) and “Angel Sigh” are the twin peaks late of a very strong finish that pays off handsomely for the fairly slow (or slow-building) start.

I don’t get spiritualized

My most seen live band until I moved to Australia. Saw them a bunch of times touring when they only had this album and it could be my favourite, (although big shout out to The Complete Works Vol. 1). Back when it was Spiritualized as an actual functioning band, not just the guy from Spaceman 3 with a random cast of players on each album. There's a coherence about it with its simplicity when compared to some of the later albums. Saw them at Glastonbury playing these songs in 1992 and 1993 so this album is forever the sound of sunset at Glastonbury on a perfect summer's day.

was not expecting this to be the genre that it was based on the album cover so I was very pleasantly surprised!

rather spacey. reminds me of Klaatu back in the 70's.

loved this when it came out, still have the version with 4 conjoined song suites. The influences seem pretty obvious now and the middle sags a bit, but still an absolute wonder.

Very good zoning in and getting work done music. I love the depth and layers of sounds going on. Should use my headphones next time.

An absolute snooze fest. This entire album is almost just background ambiance. I'm extremely close to giving this a 1 but I think that unlike some other albums that I'm sure I'll give a 1 when they come up, the album could be left on in the background and be at least an inoffensive listen.

This album was pretty trippy overall. I really enjoyed the instrumental sound of the album.

A really beautiful record. Earliest I've heard sounds like this, that really drive a sound that lives on to this day.

Fine, a couple of songs were fine to listen to but I found that it got to be too much as the album progressed. Probably a good change of pace and change of style to pop a song in in here and there in a playlist.

Not impressed. The four-bar or eight-bar cells repeated over and ever might seek to create a trance-like feeling, but I simply found it boring. Sorry!

I really like these guys. A band I had not heard of before starting this 1001 albums project. Earlier I had their album Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space and loved it. This one is not quite as good but still excellent. 4 stars.

Not offensive, so it has to be higher than my 1-star albums, but it was also incredibly boring, so it can’t get more than two.

Is this the most boring album we've listened to so far? I think so. Don't think anything interesting musically happened the whole album.

I kinda liked it, though I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention. It was great background music to work to and more of my style of music. It looped around again and I didn't even notice because I was enjoying it.

I almost fell asleep during the first track and it sounded like the singer was too. The album becomes a lot more interesting as it goes with some good atmospheric moments and production choices, but it didn't consistently grab me.

Ladies and Gentlemen is one of my favorite 90's alt rock albums, but my experience with their other stuff is surprisingly limited. Surprise surprise, I loved this! The melodies aren't nearly as calculated as the title would make you think- it's an organic listen that has killer transitions. I don't love it as much as their opus yet, but this is def a grower. B+

Nostalgia bomb

New to me, and I'm impressed. It's catchy but at the same time has an ethereal quality to it, and a repetitiveness that is at times is almost trance inducing. I'll be back.

This gets a little too spacey for me. I fell asleep while listening to this... multiple times. I prefer the more raw vitality of Spacemen 3.

I like it in theory, but gets a bit too repetitive for a casual listen, even for me. Definitely can get lost in it though. Live would be fun.

So this is where it all began, you can feel the underpinnings of floating in space but it's not quite as impactful but still something I'd love to spend more time with. Faves: I Want You, Sway, 200 Bars

The hour that I spent listening to this album went incredibly quickly. It's not my favorite ever, but overall pretty good chill music. I think that my favorite tracks were You Know It's True, If I Were With Her Now, and Sway.

Admittedly I do not know much about the space rock revival, but this album bodes well for the genre. With sounds that are floaty, fun, and comforting, Spiritualized brings a great soundscape to the table that would surely be appreciated by the likes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, and maybe even My Bloody Valentine. Great record for the likes of 1992.

Highlights: I Want You, Shine a Light. It felt weirdly timeless, or more modern than it is. Generally a good listen.

You know I've Been Here Before etc. is a great begin of a great Spiritualized record, which together with the Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space album, are two of the best albums released in the 90s. I assume the latter album (being their best known album?) is on the list too (together with at least one Spacemen 3 album) but Lazer Guided Melodies is even better. To compare: some time ago Pitchfork published a nice list of 20 "Dream Pop" albums (Think Galaxie 500, Cocteau Twins, Beach House, Julee Cruise etc). LGM is on place 11 in this list. But even though I would perhaps not qualify LGM as "dream pop" (too much motorik) it should have been much higher in that list...

Always a special place in my heart for some indie psychedelia.

Some very interesting sounds and tracks on this album. At times my mind kind of settled into this being lumped in with things like ambient and lofi music that's fairly pervasive these days given the relative ease of producing such music in the present day, but when I remember that this was recorded and released in the early 90s, it does seem a bit more remarkable. A few of the tracks really induced feelings of floating and dreaminess -- no, I'm not high; it's early in the morning and I'm sober as can be at my work desk -- and other tracks get almost cacophonic and chaotic in moments. Overall, I enjoyed this one.

7/10 at first i was like. why are they playing the same chord so many times. but then my mindset shifted and i was vibing out

5/10. Pretty boring, but pleasant enough in the background.

If I wanted to listen to space rock, I'd go to space. I can't help but think the aliens on the cover are Anorexic Batman and Shelley Duvall with bigger tits.

For an album with that title I guess I was expecting more ... melody. Thus I wanted to like this, and I can hear that the performers are no amateurs, but sadly, this album didn't vibe with me. 2/5

Ja man, das isses. Ich wollte schon immer mal die ganze Diskographie von Spiritualized anhören, dieses Album ist dabei aber immer auf der Strecke geblieben. Wenn man die Band kennt, dann ist es überhaupt keine Überraschung, dass das hier die Anfänge sind, akustisch ist das sehr nah an Ladies and Gentleman, We Are Floating in Space, jedoch noch nicht so ganz die Ideen umgesetzt. Was ich ja interessant finde ist, mit welchen fast schon banalen Elementen inkooperiert mit Pop/Rock (auf jeden Fall auch von Britpop inspiriert) ein Bild im Kopf entstehen kann, das ganz klar mit dem Weltraum assoziiert wird. Das Thema wird auch vom Text her gar nicht so stark thematisiert, im Gegensatz zum Album danach natürlich, aber diese verhaltene und dennoch maximalistische Weise, wie hier die Songs realisiert wurden, finde ich auch hier einfach sehr bemerkenswert. Der Grundsatz wurde hier gelegt und so Momente wie der Climax von Shine a Light machen das hier sehr lohnenswert anzuhören. Wer das hier mag, dem würde ich ganz dringend auch Ladies and Gentlemen... ans Herz legen, das ist denke ich genau dieses Konzept zuende gedacht, vielleicht etwas rockiger aber auch genauso hymnisch. Sehe gerade auch, dass das auch in der Liste ist. 8/10

Das hat echt gute Momente aber insgesamt ist das mir zu atmosphärisch und meditativ, auf Dauer kann ich dann irgendwie nix mehr damit als ganzem Projekt anfangen. Vielleicht muss man sich da mehr reinarbeiten aber zumindest für Ersthörer ist es so leider etwas unzugänglich. Der Rest hat mir aber gut gefallen

Fand das ganz gut, hätte das gern in einer passenderen situation gehört, so wars im Endeffekt bisschen drawn out aber denke wenn man das fühlt ist das vllt sogar eher positiv Hörerfahrung war eine 3 aber seh mich da bisschen mit deswegen 4 fuck it!

Also The Stone Roses haben mit ihrem Album The Stone Roses ein tolles Werk erschaffen. Wenn man diese Formel jetzt nimmt und durch Reverb und WahWah zieht entsteht irgendwo das Spiritualized Debut. Ich kannte das vorher nicht, aber es hat mir ein wohliges Gefühl gegeben von vorne bis hinten. Das Album ist so lieb und irgendwo simpel, trotzdem kann man sich in unendlich drin verlieren. Ich kann so eine Assoziation mit späterem Britpop ziehen der ja durch simple Chords und Melodien trotzdem was ausdrückt, nur wurde das hier quasi zeitlich früher schon yassified. Glaube um das ganz zu fassen, braucht es noch mehr Zeit, finde es aber z.B. ein schönes greifbares Pendant zu dem oft sehr Abstrakten My Bloody Valentine Alben Sound.

Intricate, bisweilen noisy, ziemlich cool. Verliert ein wenig die eigene Aufmerksamkeit, aber könnte ein Grower sein.

Love a bit of Spiritualized

Brilliant

Took a lot of the ideas from Spaceman 3's Playing with Fire, and actually executed them well. Dreamy, floaty, and almost zen.

Now I do like a space rock album, and this was no exception. I think it did drag a bit in a few places, but the atmosphere and songwriting were stellar.

I like this band. They occupy a space that sits somewhere between the Britpop of bands like Pulp and Blur, and the art-rock of bands like Radiohead and Stereolab. That's really splitting hairs, unless you're a white guy that grew up in the 90s. Then you know that there has always been a niche ripe for the picking between those two subgenres....hahah. Anyway (I guess this two-paragraph review format it here to stay), this record is consistent with what I've heard from Spiritualized. Which is to say, it's pretty, melodic, repetitive, and sorta boring but in a cathartic way. That's fine. There are a lot of effects happening here on the instruments as well as in the studio during the mixing phase. I prefer the former to the latter in this case. But, they all make for a cohesive whole. Other than "Shine a Light" I don't think I had heard this record. I have listened mostly to "Ladies and Gentlemen, we are floating in space." I think this band was in the depths of heroin addiction most of their career. I hope they're better now. I appreciate the lethargic and dreamy nature it imparted on their sound.

This kinda thing isn't normally by bag, but I really, really liked this album. The melodies were cool. It really did feel like they were guided by lasers. I'll admit the bias in my rating, but they get a bump for A) my never having heard of them before, and B) the surprise nature of my enjoyment.

Sigh. It's really hard to impress with dreamy weird stuff. Not everyone can be radiohead. Lots of props for the winds--I was just reading someone say it's revolutionary to take winds into rock, that only Ben Folds, Paul Simon, and Bon Iver are that cool. Well the person saying that (Bon Iver's trumpeter) obviously never heard this stuff. Shine a Light is insufferable. But the rest..... I think I'll try to return to this later. I think it might grow on me.

This had potential but was a lot of big swing, no ding. I liked it in theory but in practice it was too long and that bit too indie. Space rock sounds like a great concept, I wanted to really like it and I could hear what it was aiming for, but it mostly missed the mark. 3/5 though cause any less would be a diss.

Very relaxing and enjoyable, though don't think any particular song is that memorable.

Hmm another super niche British album that really had no discernible impact or influence anywhere else in the world. Most of the time the music alright but the singer sounds like he's mumbling to himself in his sleep, and a lot of the songs blend into each other. Definitely, nothing "wow!" here but more tolerable than the other super lame stuff on that often comes up on this list.

Wow - this was a pleasant surprise. I only knew one of the songs before hand (run run run). Really interesting soundscapes, one of the few albums I've played more than once.

This album felt more like floating in space than their album with that title. There was nothing unpleasant or discordant here as I noted in that review. It was a cool, easy vibe for the most part. I liked the soothing instrumentation and soothing voices. As I have noted with other albums of similar genre however, I often like the sound and feel of a song as it starts, but get annoyed when it feels like it's long outstayed its welcome, and that often happened here as with the last album.

I previous encountered Spiritualized on the 1001 menu. This album seemed a bit more palatable for me than the first I heard here, but this one is still not anything that will need to revisit in the future. On the first listen, it was okay, just kind of an easy-listening feel, but nothing really grabbed my attention. On the second, I thought that maybe I could like the album. Then I went again, and I started to get irritated by some of the tracks...so, that's probably all I need from Lazer Guided Melodies in my life...but honestly, if it were playing in the background somewhere, I probably wouldn't even notice it.

A very nice mellow interesting listen.

I really enjoyed “Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space” from Spiritualized. So this time I get to go back to the beginning. 90o0 This album felt more stripped down I guess but still unmistakably Spiritualized. Really enjoyed listening to this - it put me in a real calm, meditative state without feeling boring or repetitive. I think it may have brought my blood pressure down a few notches. Some highlights for me included “If I Were With Her Now” (tells such a dramatic, tight little minimalist story), “I Want You” (bordered on a pop song), “Smiles” (sweet little song), “Take Your Time” (a very slow, taking-their-time build), “Shine A Light” (fits the artist name well!), “Angel Sigh” (a lovely, understated, minimalistic love song), “Sway” (felt almost religious in the choruses - I’d float in space to this one too), then it closes with the amazing “200 Bars” where they actually count out the first 100 bars - as a former junior high French Hornist I felt a special connection to counting out a long series of bars). Fantastic. Lovely. Soothing. Wonderful.

It's alright

This is some awesome ass work music. Where did this album come from? I've never heard it or heard OF it. It does a really admirable job of getting into a groove and then pressing it along like a rolling boulder, which is honestly its major charm in my opinion. It takes a lot of the prog rock methodology and puts it in an alt/pop/post-new wave format. 1992? I'm impressed!

I was into this album at first but I just got bored of it by the end. It had a cool spacey sound but I think it ended up being relatively lame in terms of slow rock like this. It also didn’t help that I started to space out the album while I worked on other stuff. Fav song: if I were with her now

I want to give this five stars. My right hand is desperate to click on the mouse to give it five stars. I run through the highpoints of the album continually, yearning to give it five stars. I recall how mesmerized I was by the third quarter, how warm and blissful and singular and vast and searching the record is, and I want with all clarity and desire to give it five stars. And I can't. The issue emerged in the fourth track, Run, where they make a rather blunt allusion to the Velvet Underground's Run Run Run. This distracted more than anything, and threw me from the music. Was I listening to genuine sentiment, or rather a demonstration that the band owned a cool record collection? Is that even a problem? I don't know. I can still hear the beating of a heart within this album, but it's muffled by a leather jacket the album insisted its mum got it in order to impress the girl albums.

Atmospheric while preserving melody, which is not easy to do, but not quite the achievement that Ladies and Gentlemen is. Best track: You Know It's True

I did not know that the debut album of Spiritualized was this good. I only focused on Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, while Lazer Guided Melodies is also a blast. The space rock and shoe gaze songs are a bit more structured and compact than on the later album.
