Fave tracks: The beat goes on, you drive me crazy, baby one more time

So much fun, great vibes 10/10

its Britney bitch its a 4 personally but the ratting of the general public is too low

an iconic album by miss britney spears

iconic forever

Perfection

194/1089 Britney was my first favourite singer so I’m biased for sure but I don’t need music to always be experimental or pushing boundaries, sometimes I just want some solid pop songs. I like this album, especially the hits. It’s extremely 90s teen pop and not necessarily groundbreaking but i feel it shows that Britney has always had the charisma to elevate these songs. It deserves a place on this list purely bc of its commercial and cultural impact at the time. However, Britney deserved a second spot (certainly over some artists who got 5/10 spots) because it’s just not her best or most interesting record, Blackout was truly influential and pop music wouldn’t be the same without it. I’d also argue that Britney or In The Zone deserve a place over this one. faves: …baby one more time, (you drive me) crazy, i will be there, autumn goodbye 86/100

top track: (you drive me) crazy - more cowbells!!!!!! … baby one more time- obvs 10/10. super nostalgic

It's Britney, bitch.

Ákveðin forgjöf sem þessi plata fær hjá mér. Hef hlustað nokkrum sinnum á hana. Gífurlega sterkur fyrri hluti. Sum lögin samt rosalega 90s. Verð að gefa henni fimm stjörnur sem eru samt ca. 4,75 ❤️

I‘ve never listened to the whole album until now and DAMN Britney really is a legend! I enjoyed this so much. Probably one of the best pop albums for me.

A masterpiece. The memories I have from her first two albums are happy. I’m a pop girlie through and through

listen, I have to give a 5 to the album that did the biggest business on my walkman.

I miss the old Britney Spears

Phenomenal.. nothing more, nothing less

I'm so biased towards this album. I was a tween when it came out, and I was obsessed with Britney. I had Britney doll that when you pressed it's stomach it sang "...Baby One More Time." I knew all the dance moves to the "(You Drive Me) Crazy" music video. Saw her in concert, etc. I'm a lifelong Britney fan, and even though I fell off a little after Circus came out, I'm still a huge fan and want the best for her. To this album - groundbreaking. She put female popstars back on the map and surpassed previous teen idols like Tiffany and Debbie Gibson. The songs on the album are what you'd expect from a 16 year old girl recording them, and frankly feels appropriate considering how young she was. They're not profound, but they're fun and catchy. "...Baby One More Time" was a phenomenon, and all the other singles were also great (although the "Stop! Remix" of "You Drive Me Crazy" is much better than the album version). Sure songs like "E-Mail My Heart" are kind of hokey, but she was a teenager in 1999. It works. This is far from her best album, but it deserves to be here. She really changed the game for female popstars going forward, and she deserves recognition on a list like this. Tween me and adult me both give this album 5 stars. Also her cover of "The Beat Goes On" is a total banger. Hated it as a kid, probably because I hated the song in general, but it's actually a really great cover and lowkey one of the best songs on the album. And I encourage everyone to listen to the bonus tracks because "Autumn Goodbye" is one of her best songs.

My first album. I love it. Soda Pop😍

Britney!!! Hell yeah

AHHHHHHHH FANGIRLING cuz wow. This is sugary sweet. In the bestest way. Just pop brilliance, which is my favorite thing. Need to relisten but this would be high on my list…

everyone where who gives this one a bad rating IS BORING!!!

🎧 I did not expect to be giving …Baby One More Time five stars, but here we are. Let’s acknowledge this for what it is: a game changing pop album populated with banger after banger after bop. I know I heard it a hundred times as a kid in 1999/the early 2000s but hearing Born to Make You Happy with fresh ears honestly kind of floored me.

5s all the way!

OH BABY BABY

It's Britney bitch !!! <3

Misogyny is a large motivator for me

It's a great teen pop debut.

what a time to be alive - apparently this got taken off later editions of 1001 Albums, but I don't know what the problem is - EMAIL MY HEART??? gold.

I'm completely biased with this album. This is a huge childhood favorite and definitely an important album when it came to my musical tastes.

fire album, absolute classic

Holy smokes, this list has actually recognised a pop album?!?! I'm overjoyed at this occurrence, pop music deserves a chance too! Granted, this probably wouldn't be my Britney choice for this list but the title track alone makes it pretty worthy. Also 'Born To Make You Happy' might be one of the most underrated pop songs out there. On the basis that I don’t know when I’ll next see a pop record on this list, I gotta go for 5 stars. Love from, a true pop girly

Va beh, la titular spacca. Ma anche (you drive me) crazy!

Absolutely nothing wrong with this album, unless I wanted to explore any insecurities I might have about being known to like music performed by a teen who had everything handed to her on a plate, and had only to apply her honeyed voice to the lyrics. Happily, I either possess no such insecurities, or do not wish to explore them, so I'm giving this five stars and adding it to my Tidal library.

Pure perfection pop music (Warning)this album will not give you answers to the live the universe or anything.

Free britney

At the end of the day, I am simply ✨Just A Girl™️✨ Like, sue me for being a Millennial trans woman who adored Britney as a kid and had to keep that love to myself and grew up to be a Poptimist who actively uses Fantasy on her lazy days and has maybe had a Juicy tracksuit sitting in an online cart waiting to be purchased since my last payday. Like….duh, I love this album, obviiiiii!!! Like, I’m not saying this is the Britney album I would’ve personally picked. Even though Britney and Circus are my personal favorites, I am a bit shocked that the debut came in alone, and above Oops!…, In the Zone, and even Blackout (which makes sense, actually, but has gotten a rightfully-earned critical reappraisal in the post-hyperpop era). But I’m still a fan of ...Baby One More Time. Sure, it front-loads its strongest 3 tracks off the bat, but “Born to Make You Happy” and “I Will Be There” are great tracks exemplary of the late ‘90s teen pop era and therefore crucial for the histrionics of it all, while “E-Mail My Heart” wins me over off its pure camp energy, and “From the Bottom of My Broken Heart” still holds up as a solid Britney ballad. And it’s not like the opening singles are flawless, leaning into Spears’ signature key-change final chorus trope early, but denying that they don’t hit would be like saying water isn’t wet – you’re just being a prick, shut the fuck up and have fun. This said, I’m not a huge fan of the duet with some nameless boi time has since forgotten, nor was Spears ever great with a cover, but two duds on a teen pop album from 1999 is a true success. Plus, the bonus content of “Deep in My Heart” and *especially* “Autumn Goodbye” more than make up for the small missteps in the original tracklist. I grew up on this era of teen pop, and I hold it close to my heart, even today. And yes, maybe I’m able to tolerate “Soda Pop” because it reminds me of Pokémon: The First Movie, but I don’t fucking care!!! Justice for Britney. IRL and on this list. I have no choice but to Stan. I just prefer a cute, flirty, bop of an album. Doll behavior, what can you say ✨💖💅🏻💋💁🏻‍♀️

Classic

I love Britney!!Gorgeous voice, many songs on this album have an interesting mix of styles and/or modal interchanges within the songs. Time warp back to my teen years. An album which is about love, loss and friendship, sometimes a bit kitschy, but be honest, who hasn't felt that way as a teenager?

Probably THE pop album I think about from my childhood. I find it impossible to separate from nostalgia but I'll say it, it's iconic.

All time classic Popstar album.

I think the reviews for this one are a good poll of who uses this website because this album is undeniably an influential one but the appeal is lost if you were born before like 1980 and/or are pretentious. As a zoomer that loves girl pop this shit is like crack and also makes me remember that max martin is responsible for the success of basically every female pop artist in the 21 century. The title track is an all-timer and I'll never stop loving you is also great. Also, a lot of the tracks still hold up but overall its dated in the best way because of songs like email my heart which I'm sure was the 1999 way to slide into DMs but now it's just hilarious. "Let's circle back on these nudes after Labor Day" vibe

Before the kiss music

It was nostalgic for myself as a 36 year old man and my 2.5 year old daughter really enjoyed the songs so for the ability to entertain that much of an age gap I’ll give it 5 stars.

As a Millennial, this one hits different. I saw Britney perform this album at Grad Night in 1999

Of course I gave it five stars argue with someone else

Okay, let's go over this for a moment... I was nine when this album came out. My barely-younger sister absolutely LOVED this album. When I saw this pop up, the ONLY thing I thought of was how annoying this album was, except I learned that I was conflating it with how annoying my sister was. WHAT. AN. ALBUM. There's a reason she became a household name. This album had people talking, and her follow-up (Oops I did it again) solidified Britney's place in pop culture. My god, to think about how she recoreded this album when she was (checks notes) 16-17 years old! MY GOD WHAT A PERFORMANCE. The vocals are sooooo goood. Like, sometimes as good or better than what you would expect from Mariah, or Janet, or even Whitney. Perfectly timed tremelos and vibrato along with the vocal overdubs will remind you of 90's production techniques, while also reminding you of how versatile and accurate Britney's voice really is. I hate loving this album. I feel like a corporate shill when I think of this as a business-created album from JIVE records. I've never felt so guilty loving an album, especially the covers. But, it's still the 8th highest selling female album of all time FOR A REASON. The duality has me loving and hating myself for this at the same time... Added to library.

I now know why I love A Touch Of Class's Planet pop... They are very similar ! And both are awesome !

Perfect pop album. Britney was a star at a young age because she knew how to hit every cord and check all the boxes on bubblegum pop.

still a banger

Better than the 900 brit pop albums on this list

Pop masterpiece. Max Martin at his finest, and Spears vocal performance here is perfect. Shame what became of this pop legend.

I’m a little less than four months older than her and this album kicked off a lifelong love affair with her.

Mother is MOTHERING

Not an album that I would have thought that I needed to listen to, but glad I did. Excellent pop music from a teenager!

It has been a long time since I’ve listened to this album. Since the early 2000s I have just cherry picked hits off it. It’s a terrific album and I’m glad to see it getting recognized for its cultural significance. Pretty amazing coming from a teenager. This deserves its spot on this list!

Modern pop classic

...Baby One More Time

Whoever doesn’t give this 5 stars is lying

surprised how many of these songs I wasn't familiar with. loved it tho

I dint listen to the whole thing but five stars defintiely

Iconic. Few tracks in the middle stop this from being perfect

amazing!

If I’m being objective here this probably deserves a one. Sometimes you need a good sing along album, and Britney is good for that if you grew up in this era as I did. And at least that is something unique you don’t get a lot of on this list.

Sometimes I will listen to albums like these.

It’s Britney bitchhhhh

Good for what it is recently found out all songs written by swedes except 1 or 2

Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album Pretty familiar How do I feel about this artist? IT’S BRITNEY BITCH Pre-Listen Thoughts: Sounds like a fun way to end the work week Favorite track(s): Title track, Crazy, Soda Pop Post-Listen Thoughts: I have never been a fan of 90s pop ballads, and a they make up a bit of this album. I still liked it over all though.

Fun listen, classic white girl vibes.

Nothing like some Britney first thing in the morning to warm up those loins.

Karl "Dr. Max" Sandberg is good at what he does, I get it, but he's like LeBron, he's so good it makes me feel apathetic. These songs are bangers, they get stuck in my head, but I'm not sure how they make me feel, or even how they want me to feel. What do you feel, emotionally, after listening to something like the song 'Baby One More Time'? Is it titillating? Is it life-affirming? I think I feel some resentment towards all the Swedish men who wrote this album. The LeBrons of music, the people who are winning at the music industry, the people who feel very alien in their lack of flaws. But still, Britney is awesome, she is a hero because she battles her flaws, she is still here and so I guess this album reminds me of that. Best tracks: 'Born to Make You Happy', 'You Drive Me Crazy', the bonus track 'Autumn Goodbye'

I don't know how much clearer I can be on this: It's Britney, bitch. I have listened to this album within the past year because I enjoy it so much. Britney is all charisma - like seriously a once-in-a-lifetime performer. And I love that "boiiing" effect that 90s pop and R&B music had. Distill Max Martin and bottle him up!!!

This album is a fever dream. Turning point at the end of the 90's. The deep cuts on the album are what make this special.

There’s a few weak tracks but otherwise it’s pretty good. It makes me a bit sad seeing how young she was on the cover and what would come afterwards.

Britney is so talented. It was slower than what I was expecting but an iconic album.

Felt like a really solid pop record. Good production, standard run of the mill "insert talented girl to sing all the songs that were written by people that want to get rich quick" album. But Britney is awesome, I probably have some favoritism toward the rating. Never listened to this one from outside of the singles, but glad to dive deeper on this one

Fun, as always! ★★★★

... Yea, I'm a basic bitch. Each song takes me back and makes me feel things. I definitely had a crush on her as a kid. Her and Hillary Duff. But I'm pretty sure Hillary Duffs Metamorphasis album probably isn't here. So many of these songs are iconic and have lasted the tests of time. Baby One more time. Also, the Spotify Music video function is pretty fun.

Why do I know so many of these songs? And why are they catchy? And why do I keep bopping my head? Do I like Britney Spears? No I tell myself… it’s bubble gum pop… you love it. Still only a 3.8 though.

Me gustó, muy principios de los 2000´, el problema es que se me hicieron un poco repetitivas las canciones, como que son demasiado parecidas entre ellas.

This album is awesome and definitely defined a moment in pop. I wonder if its success would have been as overwhelming without the music videos? I'm a sucker for a bit of pop but I think this album is more important than just a popular album in its day. With hindsight, and knowing more about poor Britney’s plight — at the mercy of her record label, her parents and ultimately the law — we can see how objectified and exploited her looks and talent were. Wouldn't have happened to a guy.

I just feel terrible for Britney. The industry, her family and the general public really did a number on her - and the perpetuation of these perceptions show in the reviews for this album. Bubblegum pop and the 'sexy baby' voice might not be my thing, but there is no denying, even if this isn't your go-to-music, how influential Britney (and other similar artists like Christina Aguilera) was on the music industry of the late 90s early 2000s. Music changed forever. I remember feeling very confused as a teen (Given I'm a similar age to Britney) about how these women/girls were portrayed. Be pure, but a little flirty. Be sexy, but not sexual. Be bold, but don't step out of line. When young women like Britney tried to take their power back they were labeled; slutty, fat, histrionic, insane - they were hounded by the media and dumped on by everyone. It disgusts me. To think about how so many women in the music industry have been treated like this any time they are perceived to step out of line. Shameful. So, although the actual style of over produced teeny-bopper music is not to my personal taste - it is an important influential album and should absolutely be on this list.

It’s Britney Bitch 😑

Mucho mejor de lo que lo esperaba, y la producción impecable

Whew!! lots of insecure men is this comment section! Imagine letting the fear of others perceiving you as vaguely girly (or god forbid, gay) rule what you hear and prive yourself of an entire genre filled with worthwhile music and artists! Anyway, #freebritney

Ooo Britney...You were treated like crap, taken advantage of and used for your looks, your dance moves and your ability to make the men in your life money. Then they left you out to dry and now you are probably not mentally stable, but left with likely nobody who actually care about you to help and support you. I just can't hate on her....Britney is a damn good dancer and performer! She can entertain a crowd and play a part better than most. She is what every girl thought she wanted to be and what every boy wanted in a girl. Its not a good album....but honestly that isn't Britney's fault. I want to rate it probably a 2 for the quality of songs. But honestly she is so iconic and what she did for the 90's pop era is unbelievable so I will rate it 100% on that!

Those thousands of you who read my reviews have probably noticed that I rarely bring in the outside circumstances of an act or artist, preferring to let the music talk. Some awful people have made good music and some brilliant people have made duds. However, Britney’s train wreck of a life — a tragic tale of exploitation and mental illness — casts a pall over this bubblegum-ish pop record. So the album reads very differently now from how it did in 1999. The sexual exploitation of Britney made me uncomfortable - hit me baby and the video clip had her in a school uniform. Ehhh … even then I felt uncomfortable. Having said that, It was one of those “holy shit, something’s changed” moments when it was released, and I note that a recent pop song mentions remembering the good old days listening to Britney in the car. Shut up. I’m not old. You’re old. In terms of the album, they knew what they were doing. In terms of Britney: leave her alone. 3.5

Maybe it’s nostalgia clouding my judgment, but I really enjoyed this album a lot. A couple of the songs are goofy and corny to an almost ridiculous degree, but I feel like it adds to the saccharine, bubblegum pop charm. The hits in this album are still in my regular rotation of playlists. All in all this album was fun as hell, idc.

It’s Britney, bitch

Wow didn’t realized Brittany was that good of a singer

I grew up thinking of Britney as a fairly lightweight pop star with a personal life that was at least as well-known as her music, so why the hell is this so good? Am I reminiscing, or just getting more open minded as I get older? Well-written songs with catchy melodies and banging key changes, and Britney has a great voice. This is the prototype of its era and while there are elements which date it to that time, that is by no means a bad thing. Best thing I've heard on here since... well, yesterday and N.W.A., but it's been a good couple of days of suggestions. A really enjoyable hour: 'Sometimes', 'Soda Pop' 'E-mail My Heart' and 'Autumn Goodbye' all unfamiliar songs I liked

Boys who hate pop are lame

Giving this 4 stars because I'm sick of ppl shitting on stuff that teen girls like!

of course i would like it because although you can make the high school girl a music nerd, its impossible to take the high school girl out from the nerd! 4/5

Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe it does have some bops

I'm a girl born in the late 90s of course I always give Britney her flowers. I mainly knew the first 3 tracks but everything else wasnt bad in my opinion, just mostly ballads.

Solid bangers but felt like it fell off after a strong start.

Boy, this is a tough one. I do believe this album might be one of the best, if not the best, in this, I'll say, early 2000s pop, genre. I know it is great. I just don't like this stuff and I wouldn't listen to it again. The songwriting is talented, the singing is talented, her face is extremely talented haha, so I'm torn. Plus it is catchy as tell and I can't get Oops I did it again out of my head! Btw Jack Black does an AWESOME cover of that song. So I guess I talked myself into a four star.

I found this to be a pretty enjoyable listen.

Don’t judge a book a book by its cover…. Once you get past the artist, and the first 2 songs, this album, even though it came out in 2000 has some great 90’s r&b vibe. So many songs sound like Tamia

A classic

Didn't—truly couldn't—finish this album. But we're talking about millenial canon – this is ...Baby One More Time!

Quintessential pop. High quality. Good music to have fun to. Staple for anyone seeking a good time. 3.8 outta 5

this album reminds me of my mom soooo much... therefore I cant rate it too low! I definitely enjoyed this album more than it deserves. I will feel no shame for enjoying Britneys music!! im normally not a big fan of songs that are just girls fawning over guys but it was fun to listen and sing along to 7/10

Um clássico pop.

Classic pop. I really think soda pop defines this entire album. Catchy, nostalgic, classic

the debut studio album of britney spears, her catchy pop songs playing on most every radio at the tail end of the 20th century paired with her infectious and youthful energy won over the hearts of all sorts of women. her voice is sappy and syrupy, most every song is an earworm... really, when you've got producers from sweden, you pretty much already have a spot on every pink sparkling boombox in north america. can't wait for the people in this platform to give me crap for rating this sappy and ABSOLUTELY corny at times album a little high, but i'm gonna do it and you can't stop me. i think the only critique i have is how similar songs sound. oh, britney... you've been through hell all your life and this is me straight up saying i admire your talent. love ya mama!

Definitely a get away album

Classic!

This is a bop of an album, don't understand why it's rated so low. Britney's singing is underrated tbh. Not as good as Blackout (which is a 5/5 btw), but definitely a solid album.

This album is great. It’s okay to like this AND Radiohead. It’s not a zero sum game.

Although this album is no longer in the current edition of the book, it still deserves a spot in my opinion. This album had a tremendous influence on pop music back then. Sure, it's a pure commercial product, and the producers and Britney delivered an iconic product. The lyrics are, from today's view, in most parts way too cringy. But they're not important; the way Britney delivers them is.

I hated on this album so hard when it came out, but now with time and more music experience under my belt, I can see that it is just a classic pop album. Her delivery and dedication to the performance really sells it.

♡: Deep In My Heart, You Drive Me Crazy

I mean, how can I rate this without my 90's millennial bias? Forever a classic.

Memórias da rainha do pop dos anos 90

I wish I didn't like this as much as I do. 4 *

It's a bop.

From CD

Iconic

I really liked it more than I expected, also Britney has a more powerful voice than her popular songs show.

un clasico, nunca falla

Peak Britney was great

Interesting time stamp in pop music - an instant icon fronting a well oiled album filled with super Y2K & blippy tracks with sophisticated chord changes that are also paired with a couple middling Adult Contemporary corporate ballads that point to the dregs of American Idol. All the singles are classics and from the jump Britney has an immediately recognizable identity & presence.

4 stars

Fuck all the haters in the reviews. God forbid someone perceive you listening to a young woman sing. This shit was revolutionary at the time, grow the fuck up

Sounds like a late 90s, early 00s album 😂

Had me wiggling hips in the office

Ho ho!! I Have This Album (#7). It is the second full album I ever got. ("Full" because in the 90s-00s I got a bunch of "CD samplers" from clothing companies, YA book orders, school stuff, etc. In fact, 'Sometimes' is on one of those samplers (from Jive, which it turns out stopped existing in 2011), not that I needed a sample because these songs were everywhere!) Usually I think the bias towards debut albums on here is annoying, but in this case, I do think it is Britney's best album. Her vowels are so distinctive! Is it a good album? I don't know about that, but I don't think it's a *bad* album. I don't relisten to it that often nowadays, but I never skip the songs when they do come up. I think the singles are bops and the rest are nostalgia-good but otherwise just OK. Highlights: '...Baby One More Time', 'Crazy', 'Sometimes', 'Soda Pop' (had no idea Agamemnon was name dropped in this; very B*Witched-esque), 'Born to Make You Happy' (very M2M-esque), 'Thinkin' About You', 'E-mail My Heart' (I'm sure people are having a lol at this title, but please know that my people (xanga users) have been laughing about it since 1999)

The whole album is overall alright, but of course the biggest hits are the first two songs, which I really enjoyed jamming to. We found a stereo system in our basement one day and it had a CD player, so we got this album on a disk and also a couple of other ones, and we enjoying having it playing in our bathroom, good times. The rest of the songs are alright, but not really THAT amazing, but that's pretty much every album.

Inleder urstarkt, med klassisk popbanger efter banger. Andra halvan mer anonym, men ändå stark 4a.

loved autumn goodbye

I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but this album is wonderful and should be on this list 100%. I feel like too many people would underrate this claiming it can't be as good as [whatever they like] when in reality this album has MAYBE 1 skip. The point of the list isn't to compare albums to each other, it's to determine if it should be on the list in the first place. This one should.

no notes. free Britney

I enjoyed this at the time and have continued to do so ever since. Unashamed bubblegum pop which feels like it comes from a simpler and more cheerful time. Just what I needed to hear on a dreary Monday morning.

Classic

Love it perfect early 2000s

Hugsaði allan fyrri helminginn hvað þetta væri geggjuð plata, söng og dansaði í höfðinu á mér, pottþétt fimma! Svo var seinni helmingurinn allt í einu ekki eins góður

Funny one to rate. I was a freshman in high school when this came out. Went to a Britney concert in her prime. Now I'm over 40 and it feels weird listening to this. Can't not give it at least a 4. Her 2nd album was better too. So there's that.

Nostalgic and still quite fun. Not sure if I can relate as well as I could growing up but definitely a good listen.

Носталгия

Such a nostalgic album from start to finish!

Fun girly pop but didn’t hit a 5 for me

After reading the other ratings I've realized that some people just hate having fun. Is this the most 1999 album to possibly exist? Absolutely. Does it still just kind of rock? Duh! I love girls, I love Britney, 4 stars I don't care I don't care

F yeeeeeeah My childhood 100000/5 Nah oops is better

First 3 songs make it a 4 1/2 automatically

nothing wrong with this

My first celebrity crush <3 It's increadible how my brain can fully remember some of these songs, even though it's been 25 years since I've heard them. I cannot rate an album with One More Time lower than 4 :)

First half is loaded with bangers. Baby One More Time still works. Second half is a bit weak. The song about emails is so funny and dated. 3.5/5

Great album

A fun bit of dated bubblegum. Charles will beat me if I don’t rate it highly.

Aged okay, used to listen to this as a kid when it first came out. Definitely a product of the 90s but the music is still solid.

The hits alone are massive and while the 2nd half of this album trails off a bit to tired 90s pop, the magnitude of how this impacted the genre was immense. Britney has the classic raspy breakup in her otherwise stellar voice that intrigues the listener. Powerful. My primary hold up is that Britney is a performer, we miss half of her musical talents, but that is still impressive. Timeless hits, even if I’m just a casual listener.

I knew the words to at least 80% of these songs and I didn't realise most of then were Britney. Very poppy

almost pop perfection, just a bit too long

Despite knowing of Britney, I never went out of my way to listen to any of her songs. She’s talented and I’m hopeful that she’ll continue to improve mentally and emotionally!

Fun album; the lesser known songs are surprisingly good

Classic teen pop. Britney walked so that Taylor Swift could run.

Still love the hits plus a couple other tracks but some of these songs are just straight up bad.

(You drive me) crazy is one of the best songs in the world

What I find interesting about Britney Spears is that she sticks her tongue out when pronouncing "L". The only other person I noticed doing this was ll Anyway, the album was good. Finally a proper pop album and not another voice range tech demo I particularly liked how "thinkinabout you" line is rushed, sounds funny, a bit grimey even

Can’t deny this is a pop masterpiece.

No album more defined my elementary school bus ride.

Mother.

Ok there are a couple of duffs but as a pop record this is pretty iconic

It's a pop classic. The hits are the catchiest, most memorable songs. The filler (and there's a lot of it) is actually fun and goes by fast. Britney ruled the end of the 90s and early 00s for a reason. 4/5

holy shi why it is so good... 4.5

This is like eating too much candy. It is the best thing in the world but then ur stomach gets sick after too much. This is an overload of immaculately written and produced pop music, but by track 10 I was exhausted

I really enjoyed this aside from the odd experimental reggae tune.

It’s Britney, bitch!! Real talk all of these were fun

A classic that I know too many words to

4. It slaps. It's a 4.5, but some are weaker and strange. Email my heart is hilarious.

Is it a perfect album? Nah. But it's nearly perfect pop music when it does hit the mark. This is Max Martin at the moment even he starts to begin to understand he's... Max Martin (do I hate I have to mention him first? Yes- perhaps admits to the power of the pop machine, though); when that meets a girl so clear in purpose, dream, and talent at the perfect time, it's kinda explosive. This is one of the last albums I remember being EVERYWHERE at the time, perhaps before music stopped being that exactly. Granted, I was a 12 year old girl at the time this was released so it's hard to find a more perfect test audience for this. The holier-than-thou judgement and condescendsion was harsh on this at the time- and persists. Call me a poptimist, but well crafted music is well-crafted music- even if pop music. Admittedly, the second half isn't as strong as the first (the corn of email my heart, anyone?) but when it's hitting on all cylinders.... Phew.

Impossible to give this 5 stars after hearing ‘email my heart’ however there are enough bona fide pop bangers on here to make it an easy listen and tick the right boxes for those with certain music sensibilities.

I’m so sorry, Brittney. Gifted beautiful singer but “they” stole her real voice turning her into someone else. This was the beginning of the destruction at no fault of her own.

This was cheesy. But that's ok, I don't mind some cheesy pop every now and again A very nostalgic album. Baby One More Time was a huge song in my childhood. Britney is an icon I'm not the biggest fan of her music, but since reading her book I appreciate her music much more #FreeBritney 4 ⭐️

Look, I could pretend that I'm a sophisticated music listener and above this bubble gum crap, but I'm too old to care about being a music snob anymore. Also, it would be a complete lie. I was a twelve-year-old girl when this album came out, and I was obsessed. I still remember the first time I saw the video for "Baby One More Time" and immediately knowing everything was going to be different from then on. It wasn't long before that song was absolutely everywhere, and then Britney was as well. The rate at which she exploded was insane. I saw her on the tour for this album in 1999 at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia, which held just over 3,000 people. The next year, my gift to my childhood best friend at his bar mitzvah was tickets to her new tour (spoiler: why yes, he is gay) and we saw her at the E-Centre in Camden with over 25,000 of our closest friends. Okay, on to the actual album. It's bubblegum pop. There's nothing super profound here. But the songs are catchy, her voice is better than we gave her credit for at the time, and though he'd already had some minor success with Robyn and the Backstreet Boys, this is the album that launched Max Martin into the stratosphere and influenced the next decade or more of pop music (for better or worse). That said, even if you love cheesy pop music, this album isn't all winners. There are some pretty corny ballads and it does get a bit repetitive — the first half is definitely better than the back half. But there are plenty of bangers on here, and five of the songs were hit singles for good reason. The title track, "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and "Born to Make You Happy" are probably the best tracks. I personally prefer the video version of "Crazy", but the album version is still great in its own way. "Soda Pop" is ridiculous but annoyingly catchy, and the bizarre cover of Sonny and Cher's "And The Beat Goes On" is oddly endearing. I didn't remember several of the songs just looking at the titles, but my brain had no trouble digging up lyrics I haven't heard in over 20 years, so I guess that's a testament to the album's staying power. Maybe it's the nostalgia as I approach middle-age, and you can judge me all you want, but I still dig this album. I'm glad it's on here. 4/5

classic but no musical genius

I usually grant a 3 if it's decent but not to my liking, cleverly played but not my genre or a window into a certain time. Well, this is a time that I grew up in, but since I wasn't an impressionable girl and to young to be feeling pubescent longings over her videoclips, I was merely an outsider looking in. Thus this sugary teehee pop kinda gives me the proverbial ick. That being said nobody can deny she was surounded by competent songwriters and that she could cary a tune! Some songs shine cause they are incredibly catchy (...baby one more time; crazy; sometimes; Born to make you happy) other by being outdated(E-mail my heart; Soda pop). Weirdly I kinda enjoyed this. But don't tell 10 year old me..

She's nutty af lately, but sure was the sweetest sugar-pop queen in 1999.

guilty pleasure when i was a 20yo

The dream of the 90s and the bumble gum pop that launched a thousand careers but most importantly, TRL (RIP).

БАЗОЧКА я люблю этот альбом это круто

Reminds me of high school, TRL on MTV, crazy how it all started and where she is at now. Hindsight on this album has provided a new better perspective.

Love Britney.

Perfect teen pop

Despite the dated yet somewhat charming track E-Mail My Heart, this is still a good collection of enough sugar sweet tracks to put you in a sugar coma. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

I’m at a 3.5 that I will bump up to a 4, partially to spite the people that gave this a 2.66 average, and partially because I just had fun with it. I am a full blown sucker for this style of pop… if it’s done consistently well. This album comes out swinging on its first 6 tracks, and absolutely falls down on its final 5 tracks, though not for a lack of trying – simply a lack of perceived conviction. Britney Spears’ vocals are great throughout this album, and when she’s on fire, she’s in total sync with the music; even if it’s written for her, she’s got the conviction to make it her own and add her own flourishes throughout. That conviction goes away from Track 7 onward; the production is still fine, as are her vocals, but the lyricism feels like it was pulled out of a generic pop star songbook – it’s hard to describe the “lack of conviction”, but it’s easy enough to feel, especially with the difference in quality of the first 6 and last 5 tracks. Here’s the thing – I’m still a sucker for this style of pop. Yes, this album falls down a bit, but it’s still a really solid listen even at its most bland points. When it’s riding high, it feels really good & really fun – even cheesy tracks like “Soda Pop” or “Born To Make You Happy” just sort of keep punching until they win you over, or at least they did for me. I sort of understand why this only has a 2.66 – yes, it’s not Metallica or Black Sabbath or anything like that, but there’s room for this type of bubbly hyperpop with a Y2K feel & overblown Swedish production on the list. If nothing else, the cultural impact of Britney Spears & the boy bands & pop stars surrounding this general wave of the late 90s (i.e. NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, etc) makes this album worth being on the list, if only for a sense of historical context. So, yeah, I’m at a 3.5 bumped up to a 4 – really strong first 6 tracks, really flat final 5, but as a whole package, a nice, easy, commercially safe & bubbly 42 minutes that feels good to listen to, and occasionally has some really standout moments. I liked it. P.S.: "Deep in My Heart" is actually a fucking banger, but it's not on the original track list, which is criminal. Also, “Email My Heart” is an incredibly silly track, even for 1999.

I wish I could pretend I didn’t like this, but they cooked up a good ass pop album that definitely changed mainstream music going into the 2000s. Credit where credit is due.

Enjoyed it more than I thought I'd would!

Das ist kitschig, aber man kann es nicht schlechtreden. Das ist alles schon ziemlich eingäng und clever gemacht. 3 1/2.

Wow I can see in my mind the CD with the flower on it? Right? Anyway I have to admit, listening today, there's some skippable filler in here but the hits are HITS and it's fun to hear her before her baby voice was fully defined. we luv u britney

Thematically, there are two songs: baby I love you, and baby I miss you. No points docked for that, I think it's a plus. A modern "I'll cry if I want to" by Lesley Gore, which I know realize might be an apt description as this album apparently revamped the teen pop genre. I recommend the deluxe edition for the club edits of ... Baby one more time, they're a time capsule of what remixes wanted to sound like in 1999

Some duds on here but overall this is such a great pop album. She has stuff even better then this (Blackout) but for a debut this is fantastic.

Buoyed somewhat by four absolutely titanic songs, but even the album tracks have a fizz and charm to them that is undeniable.

Such a perfect little time capsule of this era. Blockbuster pop with so much production value that it practically blinds you with how shiny it all is. Yes, it's kind of meaningless, but who cares when it all sounds this good?

Lowkey very earwormy, nothing genius but songs stick with you

Another monster intro. Welcome to the Big Time Britney! Who knew this sweet kid would go on to the highest levels of fame and misfortune. What a crazy ride, but she’s clearly a survivor. While I’m not really a fan of her music, all props deserved for shaking the world with this album. Keep it going Brit!

## Overview of …Baby One More Time Britney Spears' debut album, **…Baby One More Time**, released in 1999, marked a significant moment in pop music history. With its catchy melodies, polished production, and youthful themes, the album not only launched Spears into superstardom but also set the tone for late 90s pop. The album is characterized by its blend of bubblegum pop and R&B influences, showcasing a range of emotions from longing to exuberance. ### Lyrics The lyrics throughout **…Baby One More Time** primarily revolve around themes of teenage love, heartbreak, and longing. The titular track opens with a sense of desperation and yearning, encapsulating the emotional turmoil of young love. Lines like “My loneliness is killing me” resonate with listeners, reflecting a relatable sentiment for many teenagers at the time[5]. Other tracks, such as “(You Drive Me) Crazy” and “Born to Make You Happy,” continue this exploration of youthful infatuation and emotional vulnerability. While some critics argue that the lyrics lack depth and sophistication, they effectively capture the innocence and simplicity of teenage experiences[1][3]. Songs like “Sometimes” offer a more introspective look at love, highlighting hesitance and uncertainty in relationships[2]. ### Music and Production Musically, **…Baby One More Time** is defined by its infectious hooks and polished production. The production team, led by Max Martin, employed a mix of synthesizers, drum machines, and catchy guitar riffs to create a sound that was both contemporary and timeless. The opening track features a memorable piano riff that sets an engaging tone for the album[2][4]. The production quality is often praised for its meticulous attention to detail. Each track is crafted to evoke specific moods—whether it’s the upbeat energy of “(You Drive Me) Crazy” or the dreamy atmosphere of “Born to Make You Happy.” This careful orchestration enhances Britney’s vocal performance, allowing her youthful voice to shine without overwhelming it with excessive effects[2][3]. ### Themes The overarching themes in **…Baby One More Time** revolve around **youth**, **love**, and **heartbreak**. The album captures the essence of teenage life in the late 90s, reflecting both the excitement and confusion that come with young relationships. Tracks like “Soda Pop” introduce a playful element to the album, while others delve into more serious emotional territory[1][2]. Moreover, the album serves as a cultural artifact of its time, encapsulating the Y2K anxieties and the rise of teen pop idols. Britney’s image as the "girl next door" was carefully crafted through both her music and visuals, resonating with a generation that craved authenticity amidst an increasingly commercialized music landscape[7][8]. ### Influence **…Baby One More Time** had an immense impact on pop music and culture. It not only established Britney Spears as a leading figure in pop but also influenced countless artists who followed. The album's success paved the way for the resurgence of teen pop in the early 2000s, inspiring artists like Christina Aguilera, NSYNC, and Backstreet Boys[7]. Additionally, the album’s iconic music video contributed significantly to its cultural footprint. The "naughty schoolgirl" aesthetic became emblematic of Britney's persona and has been referenced in various forms of media since its release. This combination of catchy music and striking visuals helped solidify her status as a pop icon[5][7]. ### Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Catchy Melodies**: The album features several infectious tracks that remain popular today. - **Strong Production**: High-quality production enhances both musicality and vocal performance. - **Cultural Impact**: Helped define late 90s pop music and influenced future artists. - **Relatable Themes**: Lyrics resonate with teenage experiences of love and heartbreak. #### Cons - **Lyrical Depth**: Critics argue that many lyrics lack sophistication or depth. - **Musical Homogeneity**: Some tracks may feel repetitive or formulaic. - **Ballad Fatigue**: The latter half of the album is criticized for being overly ballad-heavy, which can slow down momentum[1][3]. ### Conclusion In summary, **…Baby One More Time** stands as a landmark debut that not only launched Britney Spears' career but also reshaped the landscape of pop music at the turn of the millennium. Its blend of catchy melodies, polished production, and relatable themes contributed to its enduring popularity. While it may have its shortcomings in lyrical complexity and musical variety, its influence on both artists and fans alike cannot be overstated. As an artifact of late 90s culture, it remains relevant today—both as a nostalgic reminder of youth and as a testament to Britney's lasting legacy in pop music history.

I can’t not like this, so I’ll go ahead and dig it. Reputations aren’t at stake. A great opener, ‘Soda Pop’ is fantastic, the whole thing makes me feel good. Fuck it. The beat goes on…

For as much hate as I know Britney is going to get on this site, she can take my 4 damn stars. I don't think I ever heard any of the songs after the first three. And after listening to them, I know why. For pure nostalgia purposes, the first three songs alone warrant this rating for me. I don't even care that it's manufactured bad bubble gum pop of the worst kind. It reminds me of a specific point in my life and, yes, I sing along whenever I hear these songs.

01) ...Baby One More Time - 10,0 02) (You Drive Me) Crazy - 9,5 03) Sometimes - 9,0 04) Soda Pop - 7,0 05) Born to Make You Happy - 10,0 06) From the Bottom of My Broken Heart - 8,0 07) I Will Be There - 6,5 08) I Will Still Love You - 6,0 09) Deep in My Heart - 6,5 10) Thinkin' About You - 6,5 11) E-Mail My Heart - 6,0 12) The Beat Goes On - 8,5 TOTAL: 7,79 (78/100) Current ranking: 159/384 An album with a few great songs and a few filler songs. This is probably an important album in terms of the further development of pop music, but I think there are a lot of better pop albums that aren't on this list.

Rly Rly Rly good will be good forever

I enjoyed this more the last time I listened to it but most of the songs fell flat this time around. It’s still up there battling for her best album. Iconic and launched a bunch of pop I don’t enjoy Rating: 3.6

Very early crush

Mein Hit: Soda Pop

It's Britney, baby! Banger after banger, I've never listened to the whole album it's great pop 4.4/5

Knew already Skipped first half Fav new track: Autumn Goodbye

Some catchy tunes. Including some you might recognise. Nothing spectacular, but still a fun album.

it's britney bitch

It's the same candy pop that I remember. A few bops but the moody stuff is still not my fav

really surprised how great this was

ring tone 90s guilty pleasure pop for your bad 90s romance movie scene. still hits in that nostalgic kinda way, even with absurdly repetitious songs (like just read the titles) 3.5/5

Crazy how long this album is

stone cold classic

it's britney bitch

Incredible bops OBVIOUSLY

Frustratingly great pop music. The kind of pop music that you want to hate. But you can’t. It’s too catchy. It’s like the sort of over produced pop music designed to turn us into drones. Let me tell you, id be the head drone! 4.0

great pop album

Maybe I'm biased

Yeap... I also grew up watching MTV...

Talk about a pop phenomenon that became a whole ass new era in music! Britney’s meteoric rise to stardom began the instant we heard those iconic opening bars to …Baby One More Time. Whether or not you like this music, you do have to acknowledge that it was the harbinger of a whole new era of pop and Britney was the face of it all. I was in grade 6 when this came out and it was EVERYTHING to me and my girls. So many sleepovers with choreographed Britney lip syncs were had. She was our newly crowned Queen and we adored her. This album has a number of smash hits but it also has a bunch of crummy filler tracks too. Good for Britney for achieving her dreams and I thank her for an endless supply of silly pre-teen memories.

This album is repetitive and boring and I started to lose interest about 4 songs in. But at least the album sounds good, which is more that I can say about a lot of the things I listen to on this list.

One more time

Grown ass men in the reviews cant get over themselves and listen to some bubblegum teen pop. Lol

Two nostalgia hits in a row! I was 10 when this one came out. I do not know this one front to back quite the same way I know Sgt. Pepper since I never personally owned it. But my next-door neighbor friend's sister owned it and I remember me, him, and his sister dancing around in their basement singing to it on repeat. Also "...Baby One More Time" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy" was basically everywhere. It's hard a little for me to judge this one because I am not sure the music is really anything earth shattering BUT it's such a great representation of pop at that time. Britney Spears and "...Baby One More Time" in particular are so iconic to that era, I am not sure you can not include this on the list. I can understand the criticisms though. If you are taking this from an "artistic" perspective I would rate it lower. But personal connection wise, and influential wise it definitely deserves a higher rating. Even though I haven't revisited most of these songs since I was a kid, I found myself enjoying revisiting many of the non hits as much as the hits. "Sometimes", "Born To Make You Happy", "From The Bottom of My Broken Heart", and "Thinkin' About You" were all fun.

Some of the lyrics are difficult in the full context of Brittany’s life. But you can’t deny the whole package.

I can't not be biased by nostalgia. Britney is my pump-up music these days. As an album it may be too saccharine and not hold up the test of time, but I can't review this album in a vacuum. It opens very strong with baby one more time, crazy, sometimes, born to make you happy. Soda pop was surprisingly catchy.

Ooh, this is a familiar one. I think I last re-listened a few months ago. Anyway, while Britney's vocals are admittedly pretty nasal, the pop production and catchiness cannot be denied.

SO FUN I LOVE BRITNEY (a bit repetitive though)

I think this may have been one of my sister’s first albums. I remember us both singing and dancing along to it as children, likely singing lyrics that children really shouldn’t be singing. I listened to this with nostalgia-tinted eardrums today, and it is still a pretty great pop album. You Drive Me Crazy has a ridiculously tasty guitar solo that I didn’t remember it having. Overall, it may sound very much of its time, but I still quite enjoy this.

Says a lot that I still know all the words to even the less known songs.

What a fun blast from the past. Of course, the first three songs are the stars of the album and the rest is definitely filler for this album but I don’t care, I had fun

Day84 - who doesn’t love some pop schmaltz. this album is definitely top heavy, the last couple weren’t great. i just saw britney is in the top 10 all time female singers in album sales so i would think this would be rated higher since most of you own a copy

Is this the ultimate coming-of-age album? Aussies didn’t know Brittany, so she was just a sexy starlet with great pop songs. But now, in 2024, this album sits Ian integral part of her journey as an artist.

it's definitely dated, but not in a bad way – it's like a time capsule to everything that was good about the early 2000s, a nostalgic throwback even to someone who's otherwise not a fan of the period. the album is excellent for its genre and such a vibe. some people criticise it, citing a team of producers and other professionals carefully crafting the image of Britney, but that doesn't take away from it – it's just a different genre and approach. I'm not one to listen to pure pop bands or artists regularly either – it was my first time hearing this album in full and unless someone else plays it to me, I might no do it again. nevertheless, I immensely enjoyed it and therefore cannot possibly rate it lower than 4 stars

i find its a pretty decent album. its pretty ahead of its time for the time it was released.

This album is not made for me: it sounds as if it were created in a lab by a committee and aimed directly at love-struck teenage girls. Having said that, it is undeniably catchy, and the producers try a bunch of different styles, so it doesn't get boring. The album is so overproduced that I am not sure I could identify what Britney Spears actually sounds like without seeing her name on the title. But again, this isn't for me. There is lots to like on this album. I particularly liked the final song - a 60s-sounding "The Beat Goes On."

Jätteswäg

classic britney takes me back to a simpler time. great tracks throughout the album, dont stop at the singles. deep cuts are equally stellar

Some critics call this "silly and immature". That's my genre! The first three songs are just great. She's the Debbie Gibson of the 2000s. Of course, I don't think Deborah went psycho. But who knows?

Really enjoyed this. The Beat Goes On was my favourite track on the album.

Lyder måske meget ens.. men hey det er fedt pop! Så god energi, og et frisk pust efter så meget kedeligt seriøst musik

A very good pop album. Interesting to hear the producers take the elements of the boy band craze (at the time) and use it effectively with a female solo artist. More singalongs than I remember. A good album to switch things up on a road trip.

Obviously the first two songs were mega hits so that out of the way, I thought it was an interestingly listen. Not sure if there was an album that incapsulates the late 90s pop scene as well as this album does. Are all songs very good? Well... no... and "Soda Pop" is quite something, but overall I thought it was solid. 7/10.

i didn’t expect to dislike this album but i didn’t expect to like it as much as i did. a couple really good songs and very solid throughout. probably a low 4

Take the singles out and this is the weakest of weak tea. The singles are in there though, so this is an easy 4*s. More 90's pop and RnB please

It's impossible to separate this album sung by a 17 year old from everything that happened since, but this is how you become Pop Royalty. Captures some of the R&B and even punk tones of the era in certain songs, as well as went on to shape pop music around the world in a complex way. I was 3 when this came out, but doing the research and trying to be objective this time: this shit slaps. Soda Pop was an unexpected gem. Worthy of its' accolades and a defining moment in music and cultural history as we shifted into the early 2000's

There's nothing like a debut from an artist you've heard alot about but never got the chance to dive too deep into their music. I love coming to my own terms of why someone is considered a "legend". If this was my foreground into starting the path to understanding then I'm going to be in for a wild ride. This was a great listen. I may not have heard this before but it truly felt like a breath of fresh air jumping in. You could tell Britney was coming to terms with her own artistry and there was the balance of her mainstream "catchy pop" sound and her personal "meaningful" sound. It was a constant back and forth. I will say that though the singles are iconic well within her own right, her deeper cuts were able to stand on their own. I'm a big fan of her conveying her personal experience with love and connections with the people in her life. There seems to be a hint of her coming to terms with everything that seems to be changing around her. It's both devastating and intriguing how far she would go after this point. I will say that it equally makes me excited to jump into more of her discography on here whether listed in the future through this list or on my own personal time.

My big complaint with a lot of 90s pop albums is that the big hits are all front loaded, which is the case for this album. Still, the back half is solid. And the big hits are total monsters.

Nostalgia!

This was always going to be a good time

Really enjoyed this - she is the GOAT noughties pop star

Very good pop album, lots of bangers I didn't know she had

it's britney bitch

Fun songs to sing along to.

Listening to this was like being transported back in time - I feel like I haven’t heard most of these tracks in 20 years. All in all, it was a good time.

Is it good? No. Does it stand the test of time? No. Is it fun? Mostly! I didn't grow up listening to Britney, I was too young. This album came out when I was just 1 year old. Listening to this album today I tried to adopt the mindset of a 13 year old girl in 1999. It's a fun album, but it's not empowering at all, no good values to be found here for teenagers girls. Teaches women to live for love and for men. I guess Britney was never positioned to be a good role model for women...but she was, all the same, and I think that says a lot about the late 90s and early 2000s what kind of role models women had. I don't know. I'm reading into this too much. It's girly bubbly teen pop. I really liked "Soda Pop", it's a great vibe change and a really fun track. Overall it's a decent album, definitely iconic.

I never thought I would've enjoyed Britney Spears' debut album as much as I did. Its clear to see how she impacted the world of pop music and what followed. 12 year old me begrudgingly liked it and 36 year old me frickin loves it. The only knock against it is that its top heavy. You get the strongest hits right away, but the rest of it is still pretty good and has maybe one or two misses. Its Britney bitch.

As my wife said “If you could wear out a CD then this CD would have worn out in my discman” What a landmark pop album! As a 90’s boy I was NOT into Britney Spears (until her Rolling Stones covers obviously) but returning to this album as a MAN I can honestly say it’s a great pop album. Not only are the singles catchy as hell, the album cuts like “Deep in my heart”, “Thinkin About You” and “Soda Pop” are great too. This album completely changed pop music and it’s easy to see why. It’s Britney bitch! “Email my heart” is a junka though

An iconic album

I haven't listened to this is full in decades. This really brings me back to my childhood and my sisters playing this all the time. At the time I thought I was "too cool" for this, but secretly loved it. My only complaint is that this album is a bit too long. 3.75/5

Straight bitch behaviour, yo. Britney Spears gushes all over my face and boy, do I like it? Holy shit, her dripping cunt is steaming and the smell is something I'll never forget. Smokin'

Starts out way better than I expected but does start to drag towards the end. She’s just not a strong enough singer for the ballads, but the uptempo songs are a lot of fun. Should get a 3.5 but what the hell.

This is simply great pop music. Every song is incredibly catchy, and while it is for sure locked into the time it was made, it almost feels like a time capsule in that way.

Tough one. Popcultural impact 5/5 Overall music 2/5 Would round up the 3.5.

I don't understand... Britney Spears.. but shes kinda cute

A pop classic. Wish I hadn't been such a stereotypical "boy" when I was younger because I could have been enjoying this for many more years! Some of the slower tracks in the middle get a bit samey/boring. There's a proclivity in these songs to lean on the R&B which I don't think is Britney's strength necessarily. But the first 4-5 and last 2-3 tracks are so good that really it's a good time all around. Can't believe she recorded this at 18!

The epitome of 90s pop The way the world treats child stars is truly appalling, glad she is finally free 3.5/5 rounded up

Surprised myself how much o enjoyed this might relisten

Whatever else a person can say about this album, it's a pretty impressive debut from a teenager with plenty of deserved commercial appeal and a instantly recognizable voice and singing style. The title song is still a classic. I was surprised but happy to see such a bubblegum pop album in this list. It definitely sets a standard for the genre.

I love the title track and the cover of Sonny and Cher’s The Beat Goes On and I appreciate this album's cultural significance but the rest of the tunes on this record don't quite do it for me the way some of Spears' later records do. I hope we get to hear more from her.

If you could distill pop music and crystallize it into its purest form, you would get this album.

Y'all, it is perfectly okay to let loose and indulge in some dumb junk food every so often.

90s pop. But compared to what passes as pop today, this is high art. The first three notes of ...Baby One More Time contain more musical talent than anyhing in the pop charts today. Yes, it's a bit cheesy at times, especially the ballads, for which I'll deduct half a point. But really .... it's Britney. I mean, come on. 3.5/5

Oh man. What a nostalgia hit. The song “…Baby One More Time” has all the sounds from pop of this era — those big Max Martin drums, the processed funk licks, the gratuitous vocals runs. Of course, I’ll never be able to separate it from childhood memories. I was in the 4th grade when this album came out and like everyone else, these singles (and their music videos) rocked my world. The music on this album was assembled by producers who understand how to elicit Pavlovian responses from listeners — dance! cry! smile! Every chord is chosen for maximum impact, every sound is polished for maximum shine. But even though the music is synthetic, the feels are real! Why is that? I think it’s the songwriting. It’s formulaic but very effective. A record label can market the hell out of a song but it doesn’t become an all-out phenomenon without something real at its core. “…Baby One More Time” and “(You Drive Me) Crazy” are mega hits that will make any millennial lose their mind when you play them. But the album cuts are solid too. They push a lot of the same buttons and do so almost just as well. From a consumer‘s perspective, this is a good product — if you bought the CD for the singles, you wouldn’t be mad about the rest. And if you were at the right age, you probably fell in love with all of it.

When I saw this album, I thought easy 4 or 5. Yup, I give it a solid 4 for some of the best pop songs in modern history. It's easy to hate this & pass it off a bubble gum pop, because it is, but this album & its singles never stopped being played at gay clubs, drag shows, and at parties. Britney isn't a strong vocalist, in fact she has a lot of support from her backup singers on this album, but damn those tunes are catchy. I will always love Britney & she deserves pop music accolades.

Awww come on people!? It's Britney? This was massive. She was massive. The video was massive. For sheer impact on our Western culture this is right up there and whether you loved it or loathed it we've all heard it. As someone else said the album is top heavy probably because the producers didn't think people would get to listen all the way through? And to think this has a string of awards and record sales stats attached to it. Bless.

It's classic, it's cheesy, it's 90s fabulous - singing into your hairbrush whilst trying on your mums make-up questioning your sexuality... wait, what?!

Listen, I was a 12 year old girl when this album came out. Let's not pretend I wasn't into this. I never owned this CD but I am familiar with a third of the tracks. I think there are too many schmaltzy filler songs, but otherwise, there are some great songs here. Gonna forward this review to myheart@britneyspears.com because she asked me to.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Baby one more time, Crazy, Sometimes, Born to make you happy, Autumn goodbye

It's Britney bitch

A classic.

Removed Album #34 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) From the Vault #22 (March 5, 2026) This album's taking me back. I never owned a copy of it as a kid or anything, but I remember hearing the title track of this album quite regularly when I used to go to vacation care. It was probably on one of those pop compilation CDs and not the actual album given that this was during the late-2000s. I'm not normally a nostalgia guy, but that memory managed to pierce through my stone-cold, uber objective, supr srs, never making a joke in gajillion years music-reviewing heart. I quite like this album cover. It's easily the best I've seen from album art which focuses on the image of an artist rather than the themes or aesthetics of the music. Everything about it reinforces the image of a girl next door. From the pose, to the soft colour palette to the quirky handwriting and playful simplicity of the design. I like how Britney tilts her head away from the album title - it catches my attention for whatever reason. Even the fake tan and outfit is appealing to me as something characteristically 90s. This is no doubt weird for me to admit as a grown man who is about to listen to a teenybopper album from 30 years ago, but I have NO SHAME. This album is a mixed bag, for sure. While I enjoy the aesthetics of poppy dance music from this time, many of these songs fail to hold their own in my eyes. Nearly half of this album is made up of samey vocal melodies and unremarkable instrumentals. While my attention did fall into a slump down the middle of this album, the remaining tracks hold their own pretty decently. There wasn't anything fundamentally different about the approach to the songwriting or instrumentation - I just thought the vocals had better hooks. Overall, I was mildly bored by this album over the course of its 42-minute runtime, but not enough to derail my interest. This was just a perfectly alright listen. As I mentioned earlier, I'm well familiar with the title track, though I'm not sure how to break it down like I usually do with these mini track reviews. Obviously, the appeal of a commercial pop song rests entirely in the vocal delivery and songwriting, which are among the things I'm least discerning about when it comes to music. Still, what's here is pretty good. Spears shows an impressive range and dynamism as a singer, from the reserved intro and verses, to the fluid harmonies in the bridges, to the powerful vocals during the chorus (even if I do think they're a bit blown out). The instrumental isn't much to write home about, though I do like those punchy pianos chords. The ambient sound that the piano adopts during the bridge and latter half of the track is also good. I'm not sure how I feel about that strange clicking noise which appears during the chorus, however. It draws more attention from me than I think was intentional. Overall, this is a good song. It's iconic and deservedly so. I've known for a while that this album was pulled from future editions of the book, and I've always felt somewhat conflicted. It was included in the original 1001 lineup and pulled from either the 2010 or 2011 update (I don't have a scan of the 2010 edition). The book entry says that "There is simply no denying the huge impact that Britney Spears' debut had on popular music." "...Spears would reignite a worldwide interest in teen-targeted acts that had not been seen on such an extreme level since David Cassidy or The Beatles." "...Her seismic impact on popular culture spawned multiple fashion trends and generated Princess Diana-style paparazzi coverage." "From as young an age as 17, she was depicted in the media as a perfect mix of seduction and innocence, and Spears quickly became a Lolita for a brand new generation of dirty old men; the number of Internet searches that read "Brtiney Spears naked" has grown incalculable over time." That is a fucking insane thing to put in your best of all time albums book. Shunned by critics, but became one of the best-selling debut albums ever. The title track is "...one of the era's best dance songs." Wikipedia says this album was nominated for a Grammy, is considered to be "...one of the most influential pop records of all time." and made Britney the fifth under-18 artist to top the Billboard chart. The title track topped the charts in nearly every country where it charted, and equivalent success was found on the year-end charts. It's the 41st best-selling album to appear on the Billboard chart, apparently. Why was this album removed? I think it boils down to these kinds of albums being easy pickings for a list which doesn't remove albums released prior to 1997. Obviously, this isn't winning any awards for musical ingenuity and the pop star image had been perfected and mass produced three times over by the time Britney Spears arrived on the scene, but something inside me makes me want to defend this pick. I just like the idea of kids having art, a space and a culture that only they can engage with (something which has been completely decimated within the last decade-and-a-half). What are teens listening to nowadays? Downtempo, adult contemporary pop and soul/R&B-influenced hip-hop music, both of which have a large built-in adult audience? I guess that's what happens when you have a generation raised on the Internet like yours truly. All online content is tailored to a nebulous, adult age and there aren't any coming-of-age rituals online like there are in the real world. Does my purity spiral warrant this album making it onto a greatest of all time list? Relative to what this album is, maybe. Keep in mind that this list is part-actually good music, part-historically significant albums and part-niche picks from indie or otherwise obscure artists. I think the boy band/pop star phenomenon of the 90s was unique enough to warrant a footnote, with Britney easily being the biggest name of the era. I cosign this inclusion.

The first two tracks on the album are absolute fire. Iconic pop songs of the age, but the rest of it is just filler for me.

Initial post listing ranking: 6/10 Type of music / Reminds me of: Casey, very pop Thoughts: Honestly I would not really go out of my way to listen to this but the first song def hooked me. Closer to a 6.6 or so but I gotta but it at 3 stars. Favorite Track: Autumn Goodbye ———————————————————— REVIEW FOR LIVE AT LEADS by THE WHO: I accidently rated the album before writing my review so I'm big money saliva style putting it here: Initial post listing ranking: 4/10 Type of music / Reminds me of: The Bee-alz, Breh-ish "people" Thoughts: Idk, I guess I just don't really like The Who, let alone live. Their studio stuff feels better. It went exactly how I expected, just stereotypical Rock music. Honestly can't believe this made the 1001 list. Seems crazy to me to follow up this after Born In The USA. The blues track is really appreciated tho. Honestly Skipped most of this bruv xx. Favorite Track: Young Man Blues

This album is making me question whether I'm rating these for their historical context, or simply for my own enjoyment. Brittany lacks the gravitas on the ballads, but that doesn't matter to the generation that enjoyed them. The number one track is still a slapper/banger to this day. Can't argue that she made a ton of money, and is one of the most recognizable artists of all time. She worked hard to get where she was. Horrendous family life part and parcel the price paid. Hope she finds her peace. So, the answer, for me or history? 3 and 5.

I was 30 when this song came out, married with a toddler, so not really paying attention to pop music, but this was ubiquitous. The racy video made me feel dirty once I realized just how young this Disney Channel princess was. Flash-forward 27 years. All three kids are grown, and I feel a little silly listening to bubblegum pop, especially viewed through the lens of Britney's real-life drama. She was sexualized and thrown into a vicious pop music world far too young without the necessary support. Leave Britney Alone, indeed! Many Disney ingenues have followed in her footsteps, though, with big dreams and varying levels of vocal talent and personal drama, each determined (or encouraged) to erase their clean images as child stars. As for the album, the opening of the title track is unforgettable, and the song really is an earworm, produced to get you moving. The baby voice with the sultry rasp is unmistakable. There's no doubting who the singer is, even at a cursory listen, no matter what she's singing. I was struck by how some of the songs could just have easily been performed by *NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys, which just speaks to the teen idol sound of the time. Of course, it's all saccharine stuff, but that's what bubblegum pop ought to be.

Iconic

It’s weird listening to this after so many years and knowing how she would grow up.

The hits hit, but the rest was pretty mid.

Oh babay babaayy. I want to hate it but the bubblegum up top and the singles are so nostalgia-inducing. Doesn't belong on this list but fun to revisit after all these years.
