Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Knew this from growing up, absolutely a throwback to hear all these songs now.
I meannnnn, definitely a few all-time earworms here
Easy to make fun of her vocal growl and lyrics, both of which were probably chosen/influenced by others. Campy, but not annoying, as the arrangements were decent.
Title track's the catchiest. The rest is competent, bubblegum pop.
I can't believe she used to look like she did on the cover of this album 3/5
5.5/10
It's meaningless pop, but at least it's not as annoying as I expected it to be -- or as annoying as Pearl Jam was.
It's Britney bitch
Nothing against Spears, I just know I’m not her target audience but in honor of my wife being a fan, I’ll give credit as best I can
Starts out with straight fire but really tails off on the 2nd half. 2.5/5
3.5 - the hits are pretty good, but a lot of filler. Hysterical there is a song that references email like it's something new
I mean....I get it. I am fine with this being on the list. I would be fine if it wasn't on the list. Switzerland over here.
Some little known gems in here but probably because it came out during my formative years
Couple of good songs rest weren’t anything too special to me tbh.
Best Song: ...Baby One More Time. Iconic. Perfect encapsulation of an era. This song is untouchable. Worst Song: I Will Still Love You. First of all, get this other dude out of here. Second of all, after the first half of the album showed that she can make such great pop anthems, why bother with this Overall: This was so much better if it had just been upbeat pop albums. The wispy, wannabe R&B stuff just doesn't work, and it makes the album feel overly long. I will say though, that "E-Mail My Heart" might be the best song title included in this whole list.
First three tracks are a generational run, and completely justify the album’s inclusion… sadly the rest is mostly forgettable bubblegum pop 5 out of 10
This is not a good album, but it deserves to be on the list for contextual and historical purposes. This is a shining example of formula pop. These songs could have been performed by Christina, the Backstreet Boys, or any other number of pop artists at the time and they still would have been hits. Having said that, Britney is the clearest example of the toll that can take. She CAN sing, but you can tell someone was really driving the whiny, growly thing that she does, and every song has to have a quota of "oh yeahs" - iconic Britney stuff. But it's almost like you're listening to someone performing under duress. I don't know where I'm going with this. It's bad, but you should listen to it.
Surprisingly dated but listenable.
Glad this moment was before my time. It's not unbearable but not enjoyable. Influential, sure. Millennials aren't hard to influence. I enjoyed Autumn Goodbye enough to be happy that I sat through this album. Solid 3. Interesting autotune X Mario Kart thing going on here. But I'd rather listen to the High School Musical soundtrack for this sound.
some catchy songs, reminds me of janet jackson a bit, very good but arguably annoying singing. Obviously not trying to be too much more than a pop album but quite lyrically stale, and instrumentals are robotic. Favorite songs: Baby one more time, you drive me crazy, soda pop, deep in my heart, autumn goodbye. Overall around 5/10
Soda pop is a banger, fight me
Catchy as heck. Be still and E-MAIL MY HEART
Great entrance but fizzles out by the end.
I'm not sure why this album is on the list. This is just some teen pop. I get why it's a solid part of pop culture but it's not for me.3 stars for Britney
The best singles on here were good, the ballads were much less enjoyable and the whole thing felt quite dated.
It's fine. Just fine.
Some good moments.
Aside from the popular hits it's all just kind of meh
iconic. autumn goodbyee
I recognize her status in pop music, but I’m just not a bubblegum pop fan.
Solid pop!
Some nostalgic hits but too long and filled with meh songs otherwise
Incredibly nostalgic, I loved this album as a child. But it makes me sad learning years later that Britney was an exploited sexualized product.
Straight 90s pop bangers
More "Nostalgia a 42 year old man could experience while walking his dog and his neighbors would never guess what he's singing along to" than "something you need to experience before you die," but the nostalgia is there.
There wasn’t anything I disliked about this album, but there wasn’t much I enjoyed about it either.
I too am not that innocent. Soda pop is an underrated jam. E-mail my Heart is awwww. 16 year old me loved Britney back in '99, not so much her music though. It's a tolerable listen today. Extra nostalgia star
This represents a line between "Before" and "After" in pop music, so I resisted entering this listen with too much "Poor Britney Spears" energy. I see why her legacy persists to the modern crop of pop stars. What a charismatic lead vocal performance; I didn't know she could sing like this. The songwriters and producers were firing on all cylinders here too. It's all sunny, well-crafted late 90s tunes and bangers. It really is a blueprint for (at least) the next decade of pop. It's of-its-time and a little too long, so I don't think I'll revisit in full, but I certainly glad I listened to it. I wish the culture had been kinder to her. Highlights: ...Baby One More Time, (You Drive Me) Crazy, I Will Be There, The Beat Goes On
I was too old to like Britney. I wonder if I would have liked her if I was younger. Feel very sorry for the whole situation. Very overproduced and don’t think it shows her true talents.
I love people doing impressions of Britney Spears ... like Ariana Grande or Emma Stone. That shit is funny, just like some of the production on this album.
Michael Scott loves it, so why shouldn’t I.
There’s a metal cover of the title track by this guy Leo which is actually amazing. But the actual version is just a nice pop song. I feel bad for Britney from what I’ve heard, just how strenuous her routine was… I’ve known people who have had very controlling families (not to this extent) but I’ve always just felt sorry for people in that situation. I also am strongly against the whole ‘factory built’ pop star. It’s just a removal of creativity. However the songs aren’t offensive ( bar soda pop) the first half is very consistent… but that’s just the singles. Then the back half was boring except e-mail my heart that song is a joke, especially because it’s like this dramatic ballad. I wasn’t alive when it was out maybe it’s the most beautiful song of all time. The best goes on is a nice closing cover though, I don’t think it fully suits Britney but it’s alright. 3/5, I’m being generous there’s good singles and quite a few of them
A competent pop album that has that one hit that we all dig (whether we want to admit it or not). The cover of Sonny Bono and Cher's "The Beat Goes On" was fun as well. Wasn't the first female pop star around, but was certainly one that came around at just the right time to capitalize on the large millennial tween audience, borrowing every marketing technique developed by Madonna and her handlers in the previous decade. It certainly didn't hurt that she and her fellow contemporaries who would also breakout in the music and acting careers over the next few years had all primed their audience with their multi-year appearances on the Disney Channel's reboot of the Mickey Mouse Club.
I was 9 when this album was released and also very much the target audience, so I'm legally obligated to defend this album to my death. That being said, even knowing that my sister owned this on CD and that we listened to it all the time, I gotta say I don't actually remember a lot of these songs outside of the major hits. Which isn't a great sign when measuring album impact. There are a ton of 90s pop ballads, and not enough of the pure pop that Britney does best.
I understand that it's easy to get hung up on the bubble gum of it all, or the occassional nonsense lyrics, or the painful and confusing mythology of Britney. While I was never a fan, I can mark periods of my life based on memories of Britney (this album, Oops, head shaving, leave Britney alone, Toxic, til the world ends, emancipation, knife dancing on Tiktok etc etc). She's an icon and a cornerstone of millenial pop culture and this debut album is mostly good with one absolutely perfect first single that understandably launched her to pop Stardom. Also, if you played her cover of "The Beat Goes On" for some too cool music nerd types without telling them it was Britney, they'd eat that shit up! A fun game that my friends and I used to play was reciting pop lyrics like dark emo poetry and to this day nothing has topped "My Loneliness is KILLING ME"
Oh boy... Can't say I've ever listened to this full album. I kinda underestimate how good of a pop song Baby One More Time is, the production is super damn good and it's catchy af. Not so sure about the rest of these songs... Not terrible to be honest, but pretty inoffensive pop nonsense. Gets a little annoying after a full album.
Fine, nothing special. Giving a 3 star because I think it’s closer to 3 than 2 stars, not the greatest obviously though.
Not bad
More fun, less ballads, please.
Still kinda shock to see this in the generator. We're doing songs about emails now?
surprisingly more than OK.
I mean there are some bangers on here. This brings me back to like grade 6
I’ve never really listened to Britney before this beyond her classics. I really enjoyed this. I was listening to it while I was emo so maybe I enjoyed it more.
Some really good songs but a lot of them sound quite dated and very late 90s
This album may coast on it's title track, but damn it is a good title track. The rest isn't bad, just not memorable after the HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME! Favourite track: ...One More Time.
I had no idea what a Britney Spears song sounded like, aside from the big hit on the album. Lots of the album sounds like it could be any late 90s pop artist. Still a nice album that keeps your attention and the Sonny & Cher cover was a fun surprise.
Not exactly the most varied bubblegum pop, though it is fun. The fact that 18-year-old Britney (17 at the time of recording?) was likely inexperienced in any matters of adult relationship also comes across in the shallow/nondescript lyrics, but again, this is catchy and fun and she has some great performances and I’m feeling generous because HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME
As soon as I saw this I immediately thought: "one star, let's move on". However... It was a very easy listen (if you don't pay too much attention to the lyrics) and was way more fun the other 1 stars that I have doled out. Plus I can't show the same contempt for this as I have shown Bob Dylan. The lyrics are difficult to me as the father of a young daughter. This lovesick, subservient, can't-be-complete-without-a-guy is frankly stomach churning and the well-documented ill treatment shown to Britney throughout her mean that even if I wanted to I couldn't give this more than three stars. I hope she's happy now.
Always have a soft spot for late 90s - 2000s pop
Not the most enjoyable on a personal level, but undeniably essential to be on this list and surprisingly nostalgic. Love that for me it was sandwiched between two thrash metal albums, really just adds to the contrast, lol
It's pretty good. A classic or two. Not really my thing, but that doesn't make it bad.
The singles are all classics, the rest of the album is a mixed bag - better than I expected though
Never was and never will be a teenage girl. Nor am I nostalgic about really anything. I feel like this is on this list because of what this album was and who she became to be. I don’t believe this album or music is intended for me or everybody. Still has a couple good ones though🤷
...Baby One More Time feels like an album which is capable of doing something good but does it so much that it starts to become not so good. The vocals and guitar segments were solid as well as the lyrics but it does tend to feel like the songs were overusing the same formula at points. A majority of the songs used the same drum beat over and over again and the songs that did deviate from it were some of the worse ones as they could be repetitive in their own way. This album is alright (the songs that use the same formula all were of the title track and that is a good song so it doesn't affect me too bad) but there is no doubt that it can become a repetitive and boring one. Best Song: ...Baby One More Time Worst Song: Soda Pop
Holy key change. This is one of the few pure pop albums I’ve gotten on this. Not for me. One note album about love. I caught at least 4 songs that had a key change. Music dips between teeny bop ballad and muted synths and drum hits. Do not want to listen to this again. Did enjoy that final song though. Standouts: …Baby One More Time, (You Drive Me) Crazy, I Will Still Love You, and Autumn Goodbye.
I expected more. Like Christina's voice better. Maybe this is a generous rating?
The first 3 songs are straight fire. 5’s for sure. The rest of the album is actually hysterical and I couldn’t listen seriously. So I’ll give it a 3 overall from the strength of the first three.
Weirdly boring, there is so much better Britney out there I really want to understand why this album
It was alright.
This album takes me back to junior high, which is both good and bad. Love the classic songs but most of the lyrics are cringey and outdated.
I LOVE pop music, I love Britney, and …Baby One More Time is an absolute smash of a debut single. But, this album is dated as hell. The music on it sounds like it came out in the early 90s. I was surprised to see it was 99.
I believe this was influential on the pop genre, I remember how huge she was right out of the gate with this debut album. Certainly a blast from the past - a bunch of these songs I had completely forgotten about. Total bubblegum pop without much substance like much from the time, but the producers sure knew how to appeal to the masses
Not a fan but this isn't even Britney's best album. Some pop classics. Big bold turn of the century production values but honestly all the gold is front loaded and this isn't a great album from track 4 onwards. 6/10 a disappointing classic.
Iconic? Yes. Important? Yes. Good? No.
I'm going to give this three stars because it created a frenzy at the time, and it created a lot of imposters, copy cats, and a bit of a sea change in terms of what the typical music on the radio sounded like. That said, I don't personally find it all that compelling. It's not bad, but it feels a lot like the classic white artist ripping off black artist situation. I think someone who listened to the record in a vacuum and had never seen the artist and didn't even know what her name was would just assume she was black. It has to do with vocal tone, affectation, and instrumentation. Tale as old as time... some producer gets a white talent, puts them up on stage, finds compelling music and makes it feel "contemporary" i.e. mines the styles and mannerisms of black artists, and laughs all the way to the bank.
It's a little incongruous, this photo of the middle-school cheerleader on the album cover and the voice of a woman who knows how to sing on the tracks. The music is pablum, but better than expected. Some fun....
Pretty good. Reminds me of the 90s
Britney is deservedly a member of pop royalty, but this debut is largely dated and pretty mediocre? There's not a lot of variety in the non-single tracks, just slightly different flavors of bubblegum. BUT - you cannot deny the strengths of the singles, they're the saving grace of this album. I mean, Sometimes in itself is a top-tier track.
We had no way of knowing what was to come. Looking up at us with a sincere smile that didn't betray her age, there was this expectation that turned into reality (and eventual nightmare) of Britney Spears being America's Sweetheart. Of course, looking at this as a whole, ...Baby One More Time is not perfect and it is dated at times to the point of bafflement (Soda Pop, what? E-Mail My Heart? Not bad but, sheesh, that title). But, considering the first three songs (which really holds this album together, honestly), it is not a surprise that this became the juggernaut it wound up being. Britney would only have to go onward and upward from here. Favorites: ...Baby One More Time, (You Drive Me) Crazy, Sometimes, Born to Make Me Happy, I Will Be There, Thinkin' About You.
Amazing how good some songs are, and others are just so-so. Overall, a cute fun album.
Undeniably a classic
It’s Britney, bitch. A bit coincidental that this album would drop for me on the weekend where Timberlake gets arrested for a DUI. Strange the way that’s lined up. Toot it or boot it, this album’s impact on all of music cannot be denied. Enter the modern bubble gum pop princess. I liked the original Hit Me Baby One More Time - it’s a jam.
# 258 : Pop for Pop's sake. She's done a pretty decent job, not too bad, foot tapping, singing out loud. Kind of gets you going (Smiley face emoji) Favourite Track : Sometimes
Day 25 of listening to 1001 albums, one album at a time. While I do think this a pretty decent debut album I also know Britney didn’t have a lot of control on this album. While it’s super commercial and poppy it’s also can feel a bit fabricated at times. There are a probably only about two or three songs on here that really do keep that hit commercial sound. Although I still think this album is influential enough for the rise of Britney Spears and how much of a pop icon she would become. Decent album overall and really shows it would be inevitable for Britney to become as famous as she is
Knowing what we now know about Britney's contractual obligations... this is a difficult listen. Even removing that, it's not objectively terrible, but it's certainly not my taste. Britney gets an added sympathy star, but this would otherwise get a 2/5 I remember being suspended from 7th grade for standing up to my bully in a fight and seeing the video for Baby One More Time for the first time on MTV while being forced to stay with my grandma for that week while I was grounded. If I'm not mistaken, it was timed such that I was grounded over spring break as well, so watching a channel I wasn't normally allowed to watch at home while they aired video of spring break parties with scantily clad women between music videos full of scantily clad women while staying with my very Catholic grandma was confusing, to say the least. That said, this transports me right back to 1999, which is not a year I care to relive. For more on that, see me next review, which is, I shit you not, Korn's Follow The Leader. Fucking hell...
I think i get it
I understand why this was such a hit but I just have heard it too many times and it's kinda played out, sorry Britney
What can i say Its jack black..baby one nore time 3
Not really my jam, but everyone knows the song "...Baby One More Time". And yes - it´s a million-selling album with a few more hit-singles. But none of the other tracks on this album reaches the quality of the title-track.
I have never been a fan of Britney’s music-nothing personal!
Actually full of bangers
So, this album hasn’t grown more sophisticated over the years, but it was a huge deal in its time and Brit has certainly suffered the consequences of its success. I’d listen to this a hundred times over before I listened to that Led Zep album once. Also, she had more vocal agility than I’ve ever had, so kudos to her. 3.0
Yikes! The randomizer threw me a curve ball today. "...Baby One More Time" is the debut album by American singer Britney Spears. Britney was looking to expand her career as a teen singer after being in the New Mickey Mouse Club. She traveled to Sweden to collaborate with producers Max Martin and Rami Yacoub who'd been been writing songs with producer Denniz Pop and others for this album. Pop, bubblegum pop, dance-pop and teen pop. Well yeah. The album received mixed reviews but, later, the album was hailed for its impact on pop culture. Commercially, it hit #1 in the US, #2 in the UK and has become one of the best selling albums of all time. The self-title "...Baby One More Time" opens the album. It was a song originally written for TLC. Good for Britney. Electronic beats, loud synth keys and big production. Britney singing in a more R&B style. Funky bass, guitar noises and multiple backing vocals. "(You Drive Me) Crazy" slows things down. A pounding percussion. Very poppy with the backing vocals. "Sometimes" was the second single and one of a few ballads on this album. "Born to Make You Happy" has a big and majestic sound. A piano and dance beat. A song about a desire to repair a relationship. The album closes with a cover of Sonny and Cher's "The Beat Goes On." This is my favorite song on the album. Weird synth noises. A hypnotic beat. Britney singing in an emotionless voice. This somehow really works for me. I have to admit this was not as annoying as I was anticipating. It was actually easy to listen to. Very big production, maybe overkill at times, but keeps things going. Britney's vocals are obviously perfect fine for this type of music. Well, if you feel the need for bubblegum pop, this a good one to pick.
Better than so many late ’90s albums, including her boy band counterparts, but still not for me. Crazy interesting final song, though, especially for a cover. So of its time, and very typical of artists who didn’t solely right their own music, and yet so unique for a household name to be in going balls-to-the-wall with its production. I’m here for that song alone.
I don’t really like this album but it is very ‘listenable’. The first track is undeniably great. But it’s Max Martin who’s to blame for that monster. Then I feel like I’ve maybe been Stockholm syndromed into Britney. Listening now, without the visual (very questionable btw) and the media hype, I think I hate her voice. Warbling and pseudo-soulfull, horrifically overly emotive. The formulaic ad-libs the same in every track. What is the genre here? Pop I guess, but the album tracks flail around seemingly without direction or vision. It’s the last track that made me realise that I don’t actually like her. With the same instrumental as a song I’m already familiar with, the only distinguishing feature is her voice. And I hate it. But, then why did I listen 3 times over the weekend…
Okay, so Email My Heart is one of the single funniest bits of music aging badly ever... Baby One More Time is an all time pop classic. Everything else ranges from competent, to horrible, to wow, even Epstein would feel uncomfortable here. There is a good cover of the Beatles Goes On as well. Rip off of the All Seeing I cover, but she has a good voice. Better than a lot of her singles suggest. I'm going down the middle here and giving it three.
5.5/10
3.5/5. Max Martin is a legend.
I’m probably gonna hit this baby one more time at some point (👀)
Hey Max it's great we're halfway through the album. If we keep up the standards of the first half of the album this is going to be a stone classic album. Can't wait to hear the tracks for the second side. Er yeah Britney about that. I generally find that four or five bangers upfront plus an equal amount of B-grade filler that no-one will listen to more than once is the way to go here. It's worked for Madge for twenty years. You the man Max.
I still remember when I got this album as a kid, and it was something I listened to a lot when I was really young. The standouts hold up but the manufactured-ness of it is pretty clear compared to more personal pop music that’s more ubiquitous these days. It’s also hard not to feel like it’s a bit of a cautionary tale now.
The sound of the late 90s, and quintessential Max Martin. While the hits still get played (overplayed by the nostalgia junkies IMO) the middle and back songs aren’t very good at all. To have not heard the album for 20+ years but still recognizing these trash songs shows how much we must have listened to this CD in formative years . Provides good album ratings debate on how to factor in: -familiarity/fondness/cultural impact -album consistency (highs vs lows) -music quality in a vacuum
Yeah it's perfectly fine. I was familiar with one or two of these, just through pop-cultural osmosis. The rest are novel to me, but still just, you know, okay. "E-Mail My Heart" is hilariously dated, at least.
Mostly harmless
Being all of a year older than Britney, I remember this skyrocketting into public conciousness. I also remember being horrified at the entire pop princess/boy band atmosphere that quickly followed. I agree with other commentors that the first three songs really are stronger than the rest. I also think those demonstrate the direction she'd go better than the rest of the album which just blends together (until The Beat Goes On cover which is fun). The moments that aren't just a pop slush don't generally stand out for good reasons. Soda Pop, Email My Heart are cringe. Born to Make You Happy makes me deeply uncomfortable. Hey, it's hard to make 17 year olds interesting, especially if their role is primarily to be cute and "innocently" sexy (barf), not to actually contribute in meaningful ways. This is definitely a product of a very specific culture I hope most of the country has moved on from.
This actually isn't terrible. It's what you expect, mostly, but there are a few surprises in there. If you get over yourself for a minute, the first three tracks are actually really well constructed. It's not giving some deep philosophy, but that's not what the cover promises me. Very much the definition of mid.
Hit Me Baby One More Time is an absolute classic, one of the great pop songs of all time. The rest feels a little formulaic but I'd rather have an album of pop songs than an album of pop "sounds" that don't bother putting a song together. Dated, a bit hit and miss but it's a pop album, it's not supposed to get me to change the world.
1999 and few more years after that definitely belonged to Britney Spears. I wouldn't call myself a fan of this type of music, but I knew all the lyrics to the hits from this record. And now, 25 years later, I have my first approach to listen to the full album. And what a weird journey that was. Songs like "Soda Pop" and "The beat goes on" definitely don't belong in here. Some other songs are extremely cheesy, you can't get much more "naughty" than that. And the hits slightly lost their power now, but one still has to appreciate how much she changed musical landscape with those singles. Rating for the album would be 1 without the impact and fond memories, but because of that, it goes up to 3.
Starts so strong but ends up surprisingly weak, alot of the slower tracks felt indistinguishable from one another. There are some absolute bangers on here but can't help feeling short changed. Fav track: Hit me Baby one more time 2.5
Had less fun with this than I thought I would :( there is more flops than bops. But there is some great bops. Fave track: Born to Make You Happy
Really not bad at all for a debut pop album, but I maybe was expecting some more. No doubt there’s some great vocals and nostalgic beats, but there’s also some pretty corny and cringey filler in there too (even for an album like this I’m surprised by songs like Soda Pop). A harmless listen and Britney is amazing so this lands at 3 stars. Fave track: Deep In My Heart
This has some amazing poo tunes, the title track, From The Bottom of My Broken Heart, and The Beat Goes On were huge stand outs. Spears has a great voice too. But there are also some songs that are rather bland or just corny and don't really work well
are some of the songs embarrassingly weird and bad? sure. do i still like it? of course
About what you'd expect
Never listened to Britany spears before. This is why I like this. Not bad.
Of course I am familiar with the mega hits ... Baby One More Time and Crazy, the rest were all new to me but for the most part, solid songs. I liked this album.
Highlight for me was "The Beat Goes On".
A fun pop album. Could be a guilty pleasure if you wanted a dance around the kitchen :) some tracks a bit Disney channel !
Slay
Ok
Already own it, good for its time
If you want to discuss cultural resets, there's really hard to deny just *how big* those first three piano chords are on "...Baby One More Time". We're still dealing with the Max Martin aftermath, especially considering Dr. Luke was one of his protegees. Britney can really belt, and is probably one of the more talented pop singers of the last few decades. That being said, there is a noticeable disparity when Martin isn't producing the track. 1The album doesn't feel as strong when he's at the helm, not to say Britney doesn't try, but some of these songs (notably the extremely dated "E-mail My Heart") just don't have the same evergreen feel that the first few do. Favorite tracks: "...Baby One More Time", "(You Drive Me) Crazy"
So there are a lot of bubble gum pop gems in here but the songs that don't really hit really seem to emphasize some record producer male fantasy of subservient teenage women that seems all the more creepy in that they all probably manufactured it for her to sing. Born To Make You Happy? I Will Be There? I Will Still Love You? Thinkin' About You? Jeez. I feel dirty.
Oh baby, baby So I bought this album as a 13/14 year old because of, well, horniness I suppose. When I heard the song Soda Pop it was like a weird dream I had turned out to be true. I remembered how bad that song was specifically (there was like a Shaggy inspired phase with weird carribean vocals) and hearing it again was a trip.
I have a lot of nostalgia for Britney. She was my first concert (it was my sister’s birthday gift for the Oops I Did it Again tour), and those big singles sound just like going back home does. This isn’t a very good album, the non-singles aren’t very memorable and frontloading all the hits at the beginning is never a good idea (see also: U2), but seeing where Britney the phenomenon started is always fun to go back to. C
Nostalgic.m, but still not my jam.
Wow. I don't even hate this!
2.8/5 - Its fun and entertaining. Nothing more really.
Surprisingly a good record - the sound of teeny-bopping-american-trailer-trash - and bizarrely most of the songs sound like anthems for future women locked in abusive marriages. At the same time, either very deeply honest, or very prescient knowing now in hindsight the story of Britney Spears. And it's very listenable and albeit the production is a bit dated, and ... no comment on.. 'Email my heart'... It is definitely far superior than contemporary crap like Kid Rock or Chocolate Starfish Limp Bizkit - but at the same time it sites nicely alongside the peak of the pre-me too misogyny of the time of the likes of the aforementioned terrible records, Eminem and well quite a lot of pop culture late 90s / early 00s. So it kind of makes it a cultural snapshot disguised in bubblegum pop, and, in a way, deeply political. Yes. I stand by it.
It's bubblegum pop, but she shows much more range than I realized she had at the time. Quintessential Y2K pop album. Could have been ~5 songs shorter though.
Solid Pop album. I mean, it's Britney, Bitch.
I'm pretty sure I owned this album when I was 12. Definitely lost the appeal over time. Some of the songs are so toxic! I gave it a 3 instead of a 2 just cause the beat goes on was kind of cool.
3/5 aaaaah memories :) But it's not enough.
I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I think "Hit me baby.." gets ever more suspect especially as "Me too" roars on.
the hits are great but the rest of the album is filler
Overall I was surprised by a few tracks, but as I suspected, most tracks were boring pop songs ...Baby One more time - banger (You Drive me) Crazy - meh (did not enjoy the weird cowbell or the melodies Sometimes - solid ballad Soda pop - Kind of a bop, but not something I'd want to listen to more than once Born to Make you happy - meh From the Bottom of my broken Heart - similar vibes to Sometimes but much better I will be there - pretty basic, not great I will still love you - meh Deep in my heart - kinda fun, still pretty basic Thinkin about you - repetitive but okay E-mail my heart - meh The beat goes on - fun beat, subpar singing I'll never stop leaving you - meh Autumn Goodbye - okay
Email my heart, what a sign of the time. Thanks Britney
Hit me with lots of nostalgia despite not remembering most of the songs. Extremely of the time.
Oh jeez... I understand what this album stands for in terms of reviving teen pop at the turn of the millennium. But there's not a single track on this album that I was able to listen to from start to finish. I didn't like any these songs before, and I dislike them even more now.
Needed fewer sappy ballads and more Max Martin pop bangers. "E-mail My Heart" is the most late 90s thing I've ever heard.
Not really my style, but wasn't terrible.
Pop intrascendente
Essential Tracks: (You Drive Me) Crazy (Playlist) …Baby One More Time Sometimes
Very nostalgic but lotta filler on this album.
Ooh baby. Lots on here that I hadn't actually heard before. It's ridiculous (E-mail My Heart) but I kinda love it. Chose my standout track as I hadn't heard it before and it instantly makes me think of school discos and not having to give a shit about anything. Standout Track: Soda Pop
Crazy amount of hits on this album. Some pretty mediocre filler holds it just back.
LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!! She's absolutely fine...definitely fine.
First two songs were good. Also liked E-Mail My Heart :)
Growing up in the 90s these songs hold a lot of nostalgia, that being said I don’t particularly love this style of music it’s very dated and of it’s time Nothing about this album is particularly good but they’re not bad either it’s just memories of being a teenager This has to be one of the most average albums out there
Pretty alr
It’s a little difficult to listen to this young optimistic Britney knowing the hardships she’d face later in life. But buried among the filler are several excellent bubblegum pop singles, with the crowning jewel the immediately iconic title track.
My algorithm is so bricked now, lol. Year end spotify stats about to be wild. Those random swedes sure know how to write a nonsensical pop track with a strong hook - or at least a couple tracks. I dont personally enjoy Britney, but I dont think it's her fault that much, and I certainly don't have the loathing I did when I was 11. She's def talented (some decent runs) and was ferreted into this hypersexualized role from the mickey mouse club days. Was surprised I still knew all the words to the first three songs (or at least the choruses) despite never actively choosing to listen to Britney til now. Its crazy the grip this subgenre of pop had on the early aughts. The production sounds the same on almost every track: that snare sound, churchy background vocals paired with an insanely reverb-y rhythm guitar, gratuitous chimes usage, a classical guitar restrained noodling nonstop. The album is explicitly derivative. Soda Pop had to be written for Mariah (and sounds like Baha men meets Hanson). From the Bottom of My Broken Heart is trying to channel Boyz II Men, I will be there is Backstreet Boys to a tee, etc. It's a pity its such a long album, shorter would have been stronger. You start to feel how samey it is. That being said, it was eminently listenable, if light on substance or sophistication. Would go 3.5 for the cultural impact.
It’s Britney Bitch. This was fine. Other than the first 2 tracks (both bangers) the rest is kind of generic and sounds like scrapped Madonna tracks. Autumn Goodbye was decent. I am also of course not the target audience for this. As a kid there was nothing worse than being accused of liking Britney Spears. I strongly believe we are the first group of people to listen to Baby One More Time the day after listening to Low End Theory. If my Spotify algorithm wasn’t in shambles before it sure is now.
Girl boss
Bubblegum pop that was very much of its time, hasn't aged that well in comparison to other young starlets of that period
Starts good with a few hits but by the end of the album, you feel like you've heard the same formula over and over again
Yeah it's ok, some 'classics' but nothing super exciting
Full disclosure: not the kind of music I generally listen to. That aside, obviously the hits are good - but the album goes downhill pretty quickly after soda pop.
Hey! I know this from the radio! Baby One More Time's vocal harmonies sound like Britney is a demon and so she get's an extra star.
It's Britney, Bitch. The singles on this album are excellent. The rest of the album.....isn't really. I don't think I enjoyed any of the non-singles, especially Soda Pop. Sometimes and Born To Make You Happy are excellent songs. Baby One More Time is a classic and Crazy is also excellent. Can't believe she was 16 when this stuff was made. Good for her.
grandes momentos pop
Pop classic
Ha! I enjoyed that a lot more than I would've admitted when it first came out. I have some good memories linked to this album. I art directed a couple of teen mags at the time this album came out and Britney was our cover star on a few occasions. So apart from a couple of tracks this is a fun piece of pure pop and Max Martin and co did a fantastic job of harnessing Britney's talent. Even though I like it, the album is overall run of the mill and I wonder what it is doing on this list.
Ok, not a fan but it has to be on the list
Teen pop back in the day, not sure it even has relevance today. No doubt one of the most popular albums when it was released and was an excellent album for what/when it was. I can't imagine a scenario where I would play it!
Catchy pop tunes written by the chatGPT of the time
Idk what to make of this ima give it 3 but I’m not sure why exactly
This album has a few genre bending tracks I didn’t know about in addition to the hits
OK... wasn't expecting this, but determined to go in with an open mind. Honestly first 2 songs good pop. So of the time it's crazy with voice distortion and "email my heart". On the other hand, although I try and not rate on outside factors the whole thing smacks of exploitation with a fairly good voice obviously being put through so many recording studio sessions. At the end of the day its a good pop album though, firmly aimed at white teenage USA I'll let it scrape a 3 based on more than a few stand out songs. 2.5
I've let this one sit in my Unrated backlog for a year-plus now because listening seemed like a fraught situation. On the one hand, you have the ingrained sexism through which so many people - in the world, on this site, and me myself (I was 12: the culture demanded I either objectify or hate her, or both!) - view Britney and this album in particular. People are icky towards pop stars, and have been especially icky towards Britney. On the other hand, there's the fact that I've just never come around on Britney, even as the drumbeat of time has vindicated her and literally rescued her from the conservatorship which has come to represent the shackling of a complicated person who's been lent zero grace. I've come back around on Madonna, Janet, Mariah, Celine...just not Britney. So...all that aside? I don't like this! Baby One More Time is weird and gross! Sequencing on this album blows: stacking Crazy right after Baby just makes the two singles feel so interchangeable. Soda Pop is a freefall off a cliff quality and energy-wise. I was about to complain about the length, as the Spotify version is 16 tracks and an hour long, but wikipedia tells me this is 42 minutes and 11 tracks; that's blissfully brief, considering the number of pop albums on this very list which run a full 70 minutes. You get an extra star for that, Brit.
When this album was released in January of my eighth grade year, I had nothing but disdain for pop music of this period. Young female pop stars and boy bands permeated the airwaves, and their popularity made me feel even more out of place amongst my peers who loved this type of music. Now, almost a quarter of a century later, my disdain has softened quite a bit. I find a lot of the pop songs that were being churned out back then pretty enjoyable these days, and I'm likely to sing along with them should they be playing on the car radio or in public settings. This album is no exception to that rule. The first three songs on this album are easily the most fun, and with "Oops!... I Did It Again," are probably the best example of Britney Spears's early career. The rest of the album is okay, and features a few other decent pop tunes. The musical aspects of this album are just backdrops for Spears's 'baby talk' vocals and her dance moves on music videos and during live performances. The lyrics are all pretty much teenage love songs, ranging from the cheesy on "E-Mail My Heart" (this song had to inspire at least one Robin Sparkles moment), to somewhat uncomfortable innuendos on the title track. Nothing on this album is high art, but it wasn't intended to be. This album was recorded to sell copies, and in the process of becoming the highest selling debut album for a female recording artist (14x Platinum, holy shit), it created one of the biggest pop culture icons since Michael Jackson. Spears's vocal talents aren't spectacular, but her talents as an artist and performer are magnificent. It's difficult to succinctly communicate just how she and her music were everywhere during her peak popularity. Not only did she sell crap loads of albums and concert tickets, but she managed to have an award-winning four year residency in Las Vegas, and I don't think I can overstate the cultural significance of this album. Of course, Britney's legacy is beyond complicated. In the last several years, we've learned just how poorly she was treated by multitudes of people in the music industry and her own father. I could go on and on about the abuses she suffered, but I think I'll just summarize by saying that some of the things that were done to her should be considered criminal in my opinion, and my heart goes out to her and her kids. While this album is musically three stars for me (it's pretty good compared to its peers), it's a must-listen for any music lover. On the timeline of popular music, this album is a point of massive significance and consequence. Britney Spears paved the way for and influenced so many female artists, and by speaking out, she's also made the music industry a safer place for women. Favorite track: "Crazy" Favorite track not in the first three songs: "I Will Be There"
Out of context, it's too easy to glance over the hit, title track, opener, high point; Ignore the down-home half of Britney's persona. Britney, pre-cybernetic. Britney in, perhaps, a moment shared with a kinder timeline. That doesn't squash ...Baby One More Time's space for growth.
Not great. 5/10
Its not peak Britney but you have to admire the style diversity, if not the spradic filler
Spears is a singer I know almost solely through the cultural zeitgeist. The launch of her career as an ostensible adult seemed particularly egregious in terms of leaning on the young and innocent imagery while infusing everything else with sexuality within an inch of plausible deniability. The music, while professionally catchy pop, I find mostly pretty dull, though there are a couple of interesting moments. Not a fan of her particularly affected signing style.
I mean it's fine, really not my type of thing
Not as good as Oops I Did It Again but a good'un.
Poppy and catchy; no surprise there. I enjoyed this more than I expected to.
One verse of “…Baby One More Time,” is euphoric pop bliss, but quickly becomes trite. Unfortunately, the album lacks anything else with similar pull. The ballads are bad, all of the outdatedness with none of the emotional sincerity. It’s a 2.5 for me with a round up.
the title track and lead single is an incredible debut song for any artist, maybe the best of all time. a shockingly influential album, but beyond the singles there isn’t much here. the singles still go hard, though.
The definition of bubblegum pop. Some real jams here, but way too much fluff.
When this came out I pretty much completely disregarded it. I'd long stopped listening to Top 40 radio by that point. I heard the singles without trying to of course, but I never listened to the album. Never crossed my mind. I was pretty far from the target audience. If you'd confronted me with having an opinion on it back then, I probably would have decried it as total shit. Now, twenty some years later, it's nothing that really causes any sort of emotional reaction one way or the other. A carefully crafted pop record if anything. The singles are the standouts for sure. Otherwise, it sounds like she is throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks. It's kind of all over the place. She hadn't quite dialed in the personality/image she wanted to project yet, and I guess she had to segue out the Disney thing as well. Not sure this belongs on the list as much as her followup does, but I suppose it was a big deal in mass culture.
Banger
Humble beginnings.
What I remember
Where does one begin? The truth is this music was made for the masses. Auto tune is very evident. The life disasters that followed Brittany can fill volumes. As music, it is pablum. But I feel a great deal of sympathy for Brittany the person. She got chewed up by people who should have seen beyond the dollar signs. For what it's worth the music is ok if not particularly interesting. Also fwiw, I hope she gets to be happy.
I've been bad with my 1001 Albums project the last two weeks, so I'll keep this one short: This album makes me think of my life in 1999. From time to time, I'd hang out with this group of girls from Plain City because my mom lived out there, and this one, Mindy, was very obsessed with Britney Spears and I was kind of obsessed with her. There are a few memorable singles on this album, including the title track, one of the best selling physical media songs of all time (it came along at the perfect time as online media was just over the horizon). Crazy and Sometimes, both singles, are also good tracks. This is a boring review, though! Not much to say.
The non-single tracks seriously lacks of musicality, hardly remarkable at all, but the singles are nostalgic to me, personally (yes!). Spears's voice is sometimes little annoying but bearable overall. I want to rate this 2.5, but it's impossible, so 3.
What a flash of nostalgia this was! Definitely some items on this album that haven't aged very well. Born to Make you Happy felt the weirdest to me, with Soda Pop in close second. I also cracked up at E-Mail My Heart. What an incredibly out of date song hahaha
This album, which was also her debut, solidified Spears' place as a pop icon and helped establish her as one of the most successful artists of the late 90s and early 2000s. The album features a mix of catchy pop tracks, such as the title track and "(You Drive Me) Crazy," as well as more emotional ballads like "Born to Make You Happy" and "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart." Each song on the album showcases Spears' versatility as an artist. Overall it’s a fun pop album that many people would enjoy singing along to.
Yup
...Baby One More Time is the debut album by American singer Britney Spears. After being a child star on the Disney Channel, Britney Spears wanted to become a pop icon and was excited to produce this album. The album received mixed reviews - because although commercially successful - it was also seen as a little premature for a start in her music career. However, the album has since been hailed for its major impact on pop culture and has been cited as one of the most influential pop records of all time. It topped the Billboard 200, has been certified 14x platinum (diamond), is Spears' best-selling album as well as the best-selling debut album by a female, and remains one of the best-selling albums of all time. The title track single became iconic, topping charts around the world and becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. Obviously the title track single is what blew up this album and jumpstarted Britney Spears' singing career, because the rest of the tracks on this album are just competent enough to pass as decent pop music. It's a record breaking album that revived the teen pop scene for the next decade (I won't list out all the broken records as it will take too long). Everyone and their mom has heard ...Baby One More Time and especially Oops!... I Did It Again from Spears' second album of the same name, so that says something about this album's success. Personally, I don't like pop - especially teen pop - so this album wasn't anything special to me. It is nostalgic because I grew up with this music, but listening back on it I can hear that although she is super talented, the album may have been rushed out to meet demand. Her second album is when Spears really showed her stride of attempting to become a global superstar.
Well.... It's Britney spears.
A bit surprised to see this album on the list. Sure, it was culturally significant but musically not so much. Nothing bad about it, just basic bubblegum pop music. 3 stars.
Pop comercial. Un par de megahits. Ni fu ni fa.
I recognize the hits, but that's kind of all I'm taking away from this album. Also E-Mail My Heart. Could be a time for a more modern version.
Nothing against Britney, plus there are some iconic songs on this album, but Max Martin doesn't write good lyrics, catchy songs yes, but those lyrics are cringe.
Like a giant bag of haribo - all sugary sweet but surprisingly varied in flavour.
A travel to my early teenage years with these sugar pop tunes. Some of these songs shaped the pop ecosystem from late 90s and still resonate today. The songs themselves, don’t say anything, but became a musical zeitgeist - if you are a film direct and want to tell your audience that it’s class of 99s dance, you play “you drive me crazy” and boom! The album itself, is front loaded. The hits on side A, filler on side B. However, if you pay attention, your payback comes in form of gems like “email my heart” which is one of the more curious tracks you could ever hear… think of your grandkids laughing at a track released on 2021 named “Tinder Crush”
If it wasn't for the few big hits from this album, she would never have been such a success. The well known songs like Crazy, Baby One More Time, and Born to Make You Happy are great and nostalgic. But I can gladly never listen to the others again.
Listened Before? Y Well, this one was an interesting choice... I have heard it before, as I actually owned this back in the day just like 20 million other people. Now that it's had 20 years to settle in, I can see why it made this list. This album was highly influential in pop music and images in its time. It touched off a decade of female pop that a lot of people didn't see coming and paved the way for future generations (see Miley Cyrus). With all the struggles that Britney has faced over her life and career, this seems like a snapshot in time where she was simultaneously young and at the top of her game performance wise. The songs are a mixture of forgettable tunes and absolute bangers. Not an album I'll listen to over and over, but one I can respect. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: ...Baby One More Time, (You Drive Me) Crazy
I'm a huge pop fan and have always loved Brit, and therefore, I have to appreciate this album on some level. Not only did it introduce America's beloved pop princess, it also introduced Max Martin to the public through the title track-- the most influential pop writer of the last 30 years. That being said, the majority of this album does not live up to the first two tracks, which are fantastic. Britney has better albums-- particularly Blackout.
28th December 2022 Listened while chilling in the morning in Norfolk. Pub, games in the afternoon. Told Jen’s family about the baby. Snuck in at the Death to give us the ultimate 90s sound.
-"...Baby One More Time" is a classic and very catchy, with a highly recognizable intro -Rest of the album is perfectly cromulent pop music. I seemed to have a slight preference for the first half of the album or so. ("...Baby One More Time," "(You Drive Me) Crazy," "Sometimes," and "Soda Pop"). They seemed to be a bit more upbeat and have more stuff happening. -Long story short, the big hit was good, rest is not my style, but perfectly cromulent music
I feel like some of my earliest music tastes were from riding in the car listening to pop radio when stuff like this was playing
Pop comercial. Un par de megahits. Ni fu ni fa.
first listen pretty forgettable
3.25
failli me faire choper en train d'écouter Britney au bureau, j'adore l'adrénaline
Britney's low register and then 'Britney' noises she makes in transition.... Oh baby baby, I love them. The sugar coated with saccharine, honey sandwich of this album is a bit much much though. Email my heart some soda pop 🥺
I had high hopes for this, so I've got to say it was a letdown. Track 1 is a classic, track 2 is good, and the rest sound like generic offcuts from the Spice Girls, Natalie Imbruglia and Backstreet Boys. I do love that there is a track called Email My Heart, that's wild. Maybe the next album is better?
Ok romp through the past. First three songs are classics. Also enjoy the last song too. The rest were okay. Weirdly, I couldn’t stop thinking about those Christian songs that were playing around then. Some of those songs sound exactly like them.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah I did, it’s very decent for it’s time and has a really nice and easy listen run of timeless pop here Favourite song: Track 5 - Born To Make You Happy
Is it cheesy 90's pop? Absolutely. Honestly the second half is pretty forgettable, and it's hard to listen to without thinking of Britney's mistreatment at the hands of, everyone, basically. Still a great 90's pop album.
Who says sex doesn't sell, and on review that she was 16 at the time of its release, its a bit concerning. But the video was clearly imprinted on my brain Beat goes on was a pleasant surprise, though there are better versions.
I didn’t get the whole way through the album, but it was a fun, somewhat mindless collection of songs to listen to while driving to the gym. I think she’s drawn on a lot of different genres in this album. Some highlights: From the Bottom of my Broken Heart has major Bee Gees Vibes! I love it. I was really into the Soda Pop song mainly for the reggae singer. I wish he was on more songs! I Will Still Love You (with Don Phillip) was so good. I actually think they have a great vocal match and the harmonies are simple and beautiful. How can you go wrong? I didn’t make it all the way to E-Mail My Heart but went back to listen after reading Jacobs review. Wow! But not in a great way. Overall, a lot of skips on here, but this was a crucial album in 1999. I was but a mere 4-years-old but it endures in my consciousness even now. I also love the cover art, it’s so cute.
This album starts off with two absolute bangers and a ballad that bops. It had me thinking, "Is Britney Spears really going to get a 5 star review from me?" Then "Soda Pop" comes in with a record scratch moment. "You may be wondering how I got here." Indeed. This song is so laughably bad, that if taken out the album would easily be four stars if not five. The real problem isn't the one-off horror of "Soda Pop" and its not-as-bad-but-perhaps-cheesier cousin "E-mail My Heart" but rather that the rest of the songs don't come even close to the pop goodness that is the opening three songs. There are GOOD songs on this album ("Thinkin' About You" and "The Beat Goes On" to name some of the more memorable tunes) but only "...Baby One More Time," "(You Drive Me) Crazy," and "Sometimes" are truly GREAT.
Pop so chewy it’s almost tiring.
In retrospect, this album is incredibly sad. A young teen singing songs for teens but also older adults :|
Britney tackles some heavy topics on he debut and does it with grace and a positive attitude! Nothing terribly offensive here 3 stars!
Classic! Pretty typical 90s-00s pop.
As far as pop albums go, it's ok. A bit formulaic and the sound of the late 90s shiny Max Martin pop. Not terrible but not amazing.
I have an ice-cream headache.
i really like britney spears as a person and a singer! i think she sings well and has great songs. this album, however, was rather lacking. it's overproduced in a word. this album was created to appeal to the youth instead of creating music for the sake of creating music, which is exactly how we wound up with a song like "email my heart"--yikes! that isn't to say there aren't good songs. the album starts out so strong with "... baby one more time", "(you drive me) crazy", and "sometimes". those are three amazing songs and are still so good in 2023. the rest of the album falls off so quickly and becomes forgettable drivel. it's unfortunate. that leaves me with an in between score of a 3; i would give a 5 for the opening tracks, but the rest of the tracks bring it down to a 3. of course i have to mention max martin. he's amazing with creating pop music, and it's no surprise his stamp is on this album but most notably the opening track. side note: it's possible to not like britney spears/this album and not dunk on the fact she's a woman.
Britney is an iconic pop star, but she has mostly rode on her incredible singles career. Drilling down too far into most of her albums usually reveals a lot of forgettable fluff. This album is really no exception. However, this album, despite the overall quality, propelled bubblegum pop back into the forefront of music and ushered in a period of such for the 2000s. It pushed Britney to the forefront of music in a world that was thought to have moved to catering mostly to pop groups versus individual pop star acts. From a pop culture perspective, this is probably one of the most influential albums of all time (granted, mostly due to the title track), and it makes sense that this album would be here. This album has a few incredibly memorable, iconic tracks (Baby One More Time, Crazy, Sometimes, Born to Make You Happy) and a couple of cringy tracks (Soda Pop and E-Mail My Heart; for what it's worth, those songs were cringy back when they came out, too). The remainder of the album doesn't really stand out and kind of blends into one (albeit, listenable) mix. However, Autumn Goodbye was a very obscure bonus track only released in some markets, but I always thought it stood out among the other tracks on this album and should have been part of the main release. It pleases me that I have a platform to advocate for it now; it could have been a solid contender on the album at the time. Again, this album is mostly here on this project due to the cultural impact of one track, the title track. When you think about it, it is arguably even more impressive that one track could launch such a craze and reshape the pop landscape. But for the purpose of rating the albums as wholes, if you step back and look at the album as such, it just kind of becomes average. It's still very listenable and enjoyable if you like this era of pop, but the merit of Britney can't really be perceived in her album work.
Solid
The pinnacle of bubble gum pop. Feels dated today, though.
3/5. Surprisingly more enjoyable than I was expecting. Fell off near the end of the album but overall pretty solid for what it is.
Though this record is considered a "hallmark" for pop music reviving the teen pop genre, I would say it's more of a pop culture time-stamp of the end of rock music and the start to a horrible decade of music, the 2000's. Britney has been as much in the public eye recently, as the original hype for this record. I shutter when I hear her perform songs from this 23 years later, as the songs are dated sounding and the lyrics sound ridiculous coming from a woman in her 40's mouth. Since the songs were written by middle-aged men maybe it makes sense? This is the first time I've listened to the whole album (at least what I want to admit too) and clearly the songs, videos and the hoopla that goes along with the the Britney circus is targeted to a specific target audience....and I'm not it!
A decent pop album with a very 90s sound. Plenty of nostalgia for us old timers. I was agreeably surprised by a few tracks that went a bit out of the usual pop sound.
First song carries, rest are the same gg
Starts off strong with some absolute pop classics. Then it goes off the boil quite quickly.
The first two songs are pretty good but the rest quite boring
...Baby One More Time (the song) is legendary. I also quite like Crazy, Sometimes, and The Beat Goes On. Thanks to Poundland I own this album, and I pretty much always turn it off at Soda Pop (as an aside, that song is such a bizarre vibe change). Having now listened to the rest of the album, I can say that it is cheesy to the max and unfortunately this drags down the quality. Points for the perfect 90s song title "E-mail My Heart" though.
In the Zone' i 'Blackout'.
Not as bad as I was expecting tbf -- although maybe it's just the nostalgia because most of the singles were still pretty banging while the b-sides didn't really do anything for me. The cover of The Beat Goes On was pretty bizarre, overall it was mostly fine 62/100 gecs
Un peu catchy sur les bords
2.5/5 Favorite Songs: Baby One More Time (You Drive Me) Crazy Deep In My Heart The Beat Goes On
Rather generic and bland music with awful, submissive lyrics. Teenage girly pop that don't go anywhere. Of it's time. The cover of The Beat Goes On was great, but it's obviously completely different to the rest of the album. 2/5
Not my thing.
Oh man, I wanted to like this so much more than I actually did. Starts off so strong (like, SO strong), but the non-mega hits didn't take off for a reason. And that's everything except the first 3 songs, which is waaaay too much filler, even for a pop album. THAT BEING SAID, if you heard those first three notes of Baby One More Time and still gave this a 1, you're a misogynist. Plain and simple!
Veers inconsistently between genuinely great pop and poor '80s SAW-esque mawkish ballads.
Who can forget the heart wrenching message of E-Mail My Heart? Followed by the ingenuity of the lyrics in The Beat Goes On? An interesting time capsule into a time of WASP optimism on the edge of the millennium, the obvious thing to mention on a Britney album. There are some obvious pop bangers in amongst the saccharine (though as these come first the rest of the album is an endurance feat) and I was surprised by how much Britney’s voice has levels to it, it’s just being deployed in such an affected way. Overall predictably shite but at least I’d never heard most of the songs before. Nor will I again.
It started off so strong, and then after soda pop i switched off. It was very samey samey and started to grate on me towards the end.
Omfg. I love it. "...Baby One More Time" - banger. "(You Drive Me)" Crazy isto. "Sometimes" mi pa od nekdaj ni ful potegnil. Se pa ful spomnim vseh teh videospotov, ahhh. "Soda Pop" je an abomination. "Born to Make You Happy" je kinda problematic? Ostali komadi so zelo brezvezni. Forgettable late 90s pop. Razrn zadnji komad, "The Beat Goes On", k je cover od Sonny & Cher - ta mi je celo kul. Oh, Britney. Nostalgija in tistih par bangerjev me nagiba k višji oceni, ampak ne morem.
Why is this an hour long? 😭 I don't have any particular nostalgia for this one and I found the hits more grating than I expected them to be. Going to chock this up as just not my bag. Am I still bitter about this knocking Freak On A Leash out of the top spot on Total Request Live? Maybe. I'll add one star for the incredible song title "E-mail My Heart".
I don't know what to do with this album. I've never listened to it all the way through before! I understand its significance, I can hear why it's important, and listening to the first three tracks invokes this era of music so strongly it's like having an out of body experience. Am I 15 again? Am I on my way to work or high school?! There's a time and a place for overproduced shiney pop, I can dig it. Soda Pop was an interesting detour. But man this album was hard to listen to all the way through, and even the tracks I know and kind of enjoyed are just off. Maybe it's just too difficult to pull this out of context. Respect for her vocal ability, but this album overall is not my jam. Also who decided we had to just SUDDENLY BE IN A KEY A HALF STEP HIGHER with no modulation at the end of everything, because I would like a word. Good grief.
You can hate bubblegum pop, but you can't deny Max Martin's ability to craft an earworm!
This isn't very good
A lot of filler to cover for the radio singles. It's fine, I guess. There's pop albums which have a lot more to them, but I don't think this is one of them.
I do not care for this, nor this style of music. Giving it a two simply because I don't hate it. And I
Just standard late 90s/early 00s pop. Some good moments but mostly meh.
This album bead not good lol I thought the nostalgia would help but it didn't, liked the singles but other than that terrible!
I just dislike this album.
Listening session: june 2nd, while reading Listened to before: listened to one song before Thoughts: the definition of sweet teenage pop and I’m definitely not the right person for that. Also, every song sounded the same Favourite track: …Baby One More Time
In November, 1998 a college freshman came screaming down the dorm hallway about some music video we absolutely had to see. What a time to be alive. She was hot he said. She was dressed like a schoolgirl he said. It was incredible he said. We watched. As as much more mature sophomores, we didn't see the appeal. Frankly, while he was 18 and just a few short months ago nobody would have thought twice, even at a university that was 2/3 male, it felt a bit creepy. Remember, we were much more mature sophomores at this point. But here we have this album in 2026. It spawned some sort of bubblegum pop revival. Or was in the middle of that revival. Not really sure, wasn't paying that much attention. So I guess it has some cultural relevance. Not only is listening to the whole album more creepy than watching her dance in that schoolgirl outfit (what 16 year old is this obsessed with love?), but knowing the downward spiral that this album put her into over time just feels odd. Musically, it's not that great. It's late '90s over produced pop music. I swear we forgot how to make good pop music other than the 1960s, 80s, and early 90s. Soda Pop, Born to Make You Happy, E-Mail My Heart, Autumn Goodbye - they're awful. You get the banger of the opener, a decent cover of I'll Never Stop Loving You, and some sub-par but listenable singles in (You Drive Me) Crazy and Sometimes. I wish I could remember that freshman's name now. Good days in that dorm, but Britney did not make them.
With all due respect to the Pop icon status, I just can't.
A pop culture phenomenon? Yes. A good album? Unfortunately not. Britney has always been curated style over substance and that's a path that began right here.
Well everyone knows what they’re getting with this. As a major pop album it deserves some respect & if still in doubt about One More Time listen to the excellent Travis cover. But beyond that it tails off to average pop and flatlines about a 1/3rd of the way through (confirmed by the listener numbers).
I mean… it’s not lyrically or musically interesting, but a few of these songs kind of slap. Was enjoying it more than I expected to. …then it kept going. And going. Should have been a 30 minute album, and I’d have probably given it a better score. Every song started to sound the same. 4/10 Acceptable
...Baby One More time.
some days you get neil young and others you get britney freaking spears...
While I think Britney Spears has a really powerful voice with a lot of emotion, I believe the cliches, the over use of ballads and monotonous themes in the lyrics about obsession and love, makes the album quite boring. The first two songs of the album create the illusion that the record is going to be filled with absolute bangers. "...Baby One More Time" is an absolute pop classic with very memorable choruses and a very funky bass, and the same goes for the song "(You Drive Me) Crazy" which is also a very fun tune. From this point is when the album becomes pop ballads filler, with no catchy choruses or anything interesting. Fortunately, this is only her debut, and it seems like from here her music starts to gain more quality, as I can from reviews of her following releases; but this one wasn't doing it for me.
Certainly not my jam, and it’s hard to truly hate an album front loaded with 3 classic bubblegum pop bangers. But the rest of the album sucks and Britney would go on to do much more interesting work as well.
Today I learned... - that Britney did a cover of the cover of The Beat Goes on by Sonny and Cher by The All Seeing I and it's a bit of a banger. - that there's a serious conspiracy theory that the original Britney is dead and her family maintains some kind of body double fake life to keep making money. - that (assuming it is still the original Britney), she continues to post regular batshit crazy dancing videos on Instagram and I think she's genuinely not well.
Very dated, 2.3/5
I don’t think I like anything about this album. Baby One More Time is fine, it’s fun enough when it pops up on a playlist but that’s probably mostly a nostalgia thing. Nothing else on this album does anything for me though. Not vibing with the production, I kind of hate Britney’s vocals, and everything is so sappy, sweet that it’s difficult to listen to. Though I recognize that as a 41 year old these teen love songs aren’t meant for me which is fine. An interesting revisit at the very least, and it’s nice to know it’s not the devilish influence of KoRn and the Insane Clown Posse swaying my opinion this time.
After Baby one more time I thought it wasn't that bad, but this album drags on forever!
A couple of great pop tracks with the rest a bunch of mediocre songs. She sounds like she's singing through a fog most of the time. CD is way too compressed for my liking.
Det var sjovt at genbesøge Baby one more time. Men kun engang mere.
This slop is barely edible, yet I wish to consume more! Waiter!
Listening to this album in 2026 acted on me the way a pack of sour patch kids acted on my fragile amygdala in 1999, the first time I listened to this album. The opening chords flooded me with a rush of euphoria which dissipated very quickly after the first few songs. By the time it gets to E-mail My Heart I had reached full sugar crash. Leave Britney Alone etc., and love to her forever, but IMHO this album is a moment in music history rather than a piece of art to be enjoyed on its own terms. Also all the middle aged men complaining on here they can't be seen listening to this, GROW UP
Two stars for two listenable songs. Brittany, girl, he's just not that into you.
Elk plaatje, elk mediamoment, elke houding, elk pasje. Dus de muziek is natuurlijk al helemaal extreem geproduceerd. Alles om op te vallen. Is het dan niet creatief? Dat kan ik eigenlijk niet eens stellen over Baby one more time. Stoort het me? Sometimes is is tergend saai. Bijvoorbeeld zo'n zinloze cover van The Beat Goes On.
First CD I ever bought. She was better looking than the music is.
That opening track is so great that the rest of the album just can’t follow it. This album just seems to just steadily drop off after that first track. There’s some potential to all those other songs but I think this production kind of sucks and really sinks all the songs. Seems to be the classic problem of pop music in this era. The programmed beats are lifeless and the backing tracks are boring. I have a feeling that this album would be so much better with real musicians playing more interesting arrangements. Damn I was so excited when this album came up because she’s such a pop music icon and I don’t really know anything anout her but after listening to this I’m not sure if I want to care about her anymore.
It's listenable. It's not totally horrible but there isn't enough creative things happening musically to make me want to listen to it again. It's cliche, cheezy and I'd probably like it more if I was a 12 year old girl. E-mail my heart was way ahead of it's time for 1999.
An album of its time, I don't fully agree this one should be on the list as 'greatest' - probably within most important of all time? IDK, hit me baby one more time does all the heavy lifting. Favorite track: Hit me baby one more time
Bleh. Monótono, entediante, previsível, inorgânico e decepcionante. Uma pena. 2
