Excellent. Great 90’s rock
"How much dirty Britpop are you going to be?" "Yes, innit?" Don't think I had paid much attention to their debut before and it's probably going to annoy me a bit, but this will get a proper listen. For now, "She's So Loose" goes into my basket. Rating. I'm not keen on how aggressively snoty this all sounds, but... nice.
This was a fun album to listen to. Definitely reeks of 90s British rock nostalgia.
Allright, dit bandje is meer dan dát nummer. Verrassender/technischer dan verwacht, mist soms wat gevoel
Super fun listen!!
3.5/5
Pretty good.
A great indie rock? Album with sick punk vibes. Reminds me a lot of Pixies, great listen.
Variety is the spice of music, and this album is no exception. Most songs feel like a unique trip down the same few roads, which keeps things interesting and experimental. The mixing is pretty terrible and distracting on a few tracks, but overall things stay fun to listen to. Favorites are Alright, Lenny, and Time.
4.5/5 Great album. I personally enjoyed it. Every single track was amazing and it didn’t feel like I was listening to an album with filler songs. This is my first time listening to Supergrass and I’m glad this was recommended as I’ve now become a fan. Favorite Track: Caught By The Fuzz Least Favorite Track: We’re Not Supposed To
Haven’t heard of it. Rock from 1995. Quite energetic starting off. Quite enjoying. Energy maintains through the songs. Recognise Alright (and added to library). Have quite enjoyed on the whole and will add to library. Low 4.
OK! musste mich reinhören. Album wird zum Ende hin immer eingängiger, im positiven Sinne. "She's So Loose", "Time" und"Sofa" sind für mich echte Ohrwürmer.
Really fun.
The highs are this album are really really good, but there's enough boring songs on here that keep it at a four rather than a five, sadly. Maybe it'd be a five given some more time. My favourite songs were She's So Loose and Caught By The Fuzz.
Supergass reviens nous baiser la gueule, gueule qui était sacrément en manque de baise depuis de nombreux mois, n'ayant eu droit qu'a 40mn de folie avec a-ha.
never heard of this band -love going into an album with no idea what the deal is -getting a groovy indie rock sort of feel here -i am liking the vibes of these first two songs -I KNOW THIS SONG -alright!!!! what a song!!!!! its such a fun tune -i am actually really loving these songs -this is an album that is perfect for me -genuinely i enjoyed every minute of this album which was So unexpected -i am giving this a solid 4 stars
This is the first one I might actually come back to: really fun. My highlights: "Sitting Up Straight" and "She's So Loose".
Perfect pop counter-culture but how was it so easy for them to record such an album and make it so digestible for 1990s mums and dads?
Really enjoyed the pop-punk sound. Underrated.
I liked it
I mean it's great, but essential listening?
I could see this one growing on me. Rating: 3.7
Never heard of them but recognized a couple songs. Better than expected, Kinks vibe.
Another amazing album by supergrass. Loved it!
This album is sooo good
A cool album of alt rock/ britpop one know song which is a banger. Saved a few for playlists.
3.5
Started with a reading comprehension fail, as I thought this was going to be Supertramp. When it started i quickly realized my error, and the frenetic pace of the opening song was a bit worrying that this would be very experimental new wave kind of stuff that I'm not too keen on. All that aside the album quickly grew on me, really enjoyed Strange Things and had the Aha moment when Alright came on. Fun boisterous album, definitely would give it another go and see what else these guys have to offer.
great album
Godt
I love this record and this band. Their first 4 records belong in this list.
Not bad, a bit dated but jolly music for the time
Poppy goodness! Pretty fun to hear "Alright" in the context of an album not a single scene in a film. Ultimately not my favorite style of music but this was a solid album.
Enjoyed this, the album flew by which I’m gonna say is a good thing
I wasn't expecting all too much from I Should Coco but I'm happy to say I'm pleasantly surprised with how good this album was. It was weird (weirder than most albums i have looked at) but it was high energy, and generally fun to listen to. I really enjoyed my time with this album. Best Song: Lose It Worst Song: Sofa (Of My Lethargy)
They’re alright
I'm starting to feel like this list has every single britpop album ever made on it. Oh well, at least this one's pretty good. I like it. After listening to quite a few pop-punk albums for this project, I'm still not entirely sure how to feel about it, but I will say that this album is basically the perfect blend of pop and punk. The whole tone and mood of this album is consistently great and very enjoyable, with the exception of We're Not Supposed To. I didn't like that song very much. Other than that one song, this album is quite good overall. The singing is good, and the instrumentals complement that singing quite well. It's probably the most British album I've listened to so far, but that's not really in a bad way. This is definitely a solid album, and I somewhat understand it's inclusion in this list. light 4/5.
Surprisingly good. Much better than one of the other Supergrass albums on this list. Didn’t realize these guys made Alright. I hate the album cover though. Creeps me out, those faces are uncanny. 7.5/10 (my first half point score) Top 5: 1. Alright 2. I’d Like To Know 3. Caught By The Fuzz 4. Strange Ones 5. Sitting Up Straight
摇滚是不是都还不错捏
Pretty cool pop rock from UK
Such cute spunky kids – one misses having such energy, but also finds it somewhat exhausting. One prefers these guys to Arctic Monkeys and Green Day (by a lot). Perhaps a bit much of the same relentless tempo and perhaps a bit too shiny, too. The record gets better with the better cuts are backloaded after a more frenetic (a bit excessively so, depending on the listening context). Highest quality comes through "She's So Loose," "Sofa" and 2x "Time," the second of which, so Beatlesesque, one vaguely remembers from the day. "Alright" also considerably better than just that.
Decent album. A little bit weird in places but overall not bad.
Man these little english goobers could turn out a tune! Mansized rooster, time, alright, very solid tracks on a very solid debut.
I hadn’t heard of this band before, but I listened to it a couple times and enjoyed it!
Really on my same page for what regards aesthetics, messages and soul. Tho I liked it more than the previous one, it had at times rhythms a bit too heavy
The best Supergrass album. They slowly descended into vintage seriousness as time went on, where this album is perfect youthful fun!
Sparkling English post punk or pop punk or something that still sounds fresh nearly thirty years later. And it dances. Melodic and varied enough I’d like to listen at least again and again at least. Anticipates Spoon and a lot of other music but much less precious and self aware. Back when white musicians didn’t think so much (of themselves).
Like: British alternativa rock
I actually discovered this album early this year and quite liked it - having heard Alright I initially wrote Supergrass off as being one of those douchey early 2000s flash-in-the-pan bands, but the rest of this album is really solid and Gaz Coombs seems like a nice guy so I'll happily give it 4*
Energikus, tempós, brit. Az Alright a legismertebb dal valóban, de személyesen a Sitting Up Straight a kedvenc az albumról. 3,83
Really fun, upbeat album that I can see myself listening to again and again
Some very enjoyable pop rock songs. Lots of diversity among these tracks.
Great punk album! From start to finish every song brought something new without deviating too far from a killer sound. Really enjoyed the ride on this one.
Song "Alright" is heard everywhere. English alternative rock band. Garage rock sound.
I didn't get through the whole album, but I liked what I heard
I really enjoyed this album the tasteful shouting and instrumentation in the background really make this a fun listen. My favorites off the album were Time and Lose It.
Britpop punk. Un megahit. Un 4.
Very cool 90's alt sound. Haven't heard of this one before, would like to listen to it again.
I enjoy their sense of humor and energy.
Fantastic and fun album. Hadn't heard of this before today, so was super hyped when "Alright" came on, which of course is a massive hit everyone knows.
4/5
8.1
Catchy and fun, though a bit same-y.
3.8 bra men ikke woaw
Super energetic album! I was hooked as soon as I heard the opening track. So good! I've already heard Alright before but lost in memory. So glad that I rediscovered it. Even gladder that I listened to the full album. Time To Go is a perfect closure.
Oikeen hyvää perusrockia!
Really like the first song, Alright. Like the energy in this album. I'd Like to Know and Time To Go are other ones that caught my ear.
Some really good tracks I'd not listened to for ages.
I thought I had no idea who this band was, but I actually recognized a couple of songs on here (and liked them too). Very 90s, but very enjoyable. "Alright" is the song I was most familiar with, and it's probably also my favorite on the album, but honestly most of the songs on here are good. Will definitely listen again.
A fun exuberant album with sixties pop flourishes, and nineties aggression. Clangy overdriven Beatles/Kinks chords. Bowie glam. Lightly Distorted Vocals not mixed for clarity. Throw this on at a party and get the energy pumping. This one feels like it would be comfortable sitting in a six cd changer for six months to a year
Good stuff, enjoyed it
Lots of different vibes on this album. Normally not a huge fan of this kind of music, but it hit well today.
"We're Not Supposed To" is a little obnoxious, but otherwise this is a strong, punky album.
kinda nice. kinda liked it. 7/10
Very 90s, and very young sounding - just a bunch of lads having a laugh. Plenty of filler, which ultimately stops it getting full marks from me, but a solid debut with a couple of classic classic singles
Pretty good punk/ish album.
My first listen to Supergrass! And probably not my last. I loved their energy here. The guitar work is really insanely catchy and punchy, and the vocals are just the right amount of unpolished (I genuinely mean this as a compliment).
Again pretty good 7,5
Love me some good pop-punk and british men. Very cute and fun album I must say
I was a bit disappointed during the first few tracks, after feeling like they were a little too messy. Maybe I was expecting Alright to be the main sound of the record? Well, pretty much every song but the first three was exactly what I wanted to hear. Supergrass leaned into a heavier, guitar-intensive sound that was more reminiscent of the '90s alternative I grew up with, while still keeping that fun energy that's a staple in britpop. It makes you wonder why Oasis became the global poster boys for the genre when bands like Supergrass, Pulp, and Blur existed too. Standout tracks are Alright, Lenny, and Time.
pretty bangin
"I Should Coco" is the debut studio album by English alternative rock band Supergrass. Supergrass was formed after the breakup of The Jennifers who won a fan in Sam Williams while seeing them playing at gigs around Oxford and ended up producing their debut. The band's music took their influences of the Buzzcocks, The Jam, Madness and the Kinks and mixed it with three-cords and guitar punk. A decent description but also a major player in the Britpop scene. The album title is a Cockney rhyming slang for "I should think so." It did well commercially hitting #1 in the UK and has been their best selling album. An explosive "1,2,3" scream opens "I'd Like to Know." Cheerful. Fast-paced punk. The keyboards keeps the melody. A pyschedelic guitar bride. "I like to know where all the strange ones go." They keep it rolling in "Caught by the Fuzz." Reminds me of the Sex Pistols. It's based on a real-life event of lead singer Gaz Coombes who was arrested at 15 for pot. "Mansize Rooster," another single, takes it more in a pop direction but keeps the pace fast. Their biggest hit "Alright" has a bouncey piano. Very catchy. It's simply about discovering girls and drinking. I do remember this song in the US at the time. The bass becomes more prominent in "Lose It." This is more dramatic and guitar heavy. He's telling a girl to lose it. "Lenny" has a big guitar and quick drums. Five of these first six songs were singles. Towards the end of the album the band changes it up on a few songs which I found interesting. They goes bluesy in "Time." This is more guitar and hard rock driven. By far their longest song "Sofa (Of My Lethargy)" which written by the band jamming on the couch. And jam band it is. It's slower. Piano. Slide guitar. More chill and somewhat more in that Britpop style too. This is a really good album. Fast. Punk. Simple lyrics. Catchy music and choruses. Quick short songs..get in and get out. This was good album for a Friday funday.
I didn't realize Alright was that song.
Fun album!
Très bon punk rock, vraiment entraînant et bien exécuté. À la frontière parfaite entre lourdeur et accessibilité. Était un peu long vers la fin mais généralement très bon album. 8/10
Fun and frenetic. Hardly a duff tune, a top Britpop album
Album 109 of 1001 Supergrass - I Should CoCo Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : Described as Alternative Rock. Got me thinking about the difference between Alternative Rock and Post Punk, but that is for another day. This is a very good (debut) album. Seems that it hit #1 in the UK back in the day. Some call it Pop Punk. Others call it Alternative. Others call it BritPop. Either way, it is a fine listen. One to remember for later. Good tunes, good musicianship, good production, good overall energy. Love these hidden gems. Time well spent.
Kinda surfy, kinda punky, pretty fun overall. Had a good time listening to it. Reminds me of a less theatrical version of the Smashing Pumpkins or a less intense version of Pixies. Crunchy guitar riffs, slacker-esque singing/lyricism. This one has the mid-90's written all over it. Fave tracks: I'd Like to Know, Alright, Strange Ones
This is a very interesting album. Seems to be sitting right on the precipice of classic brit rocks sounds like the Kinks, the Ramones, etc. and modern brit/indie rock like Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, etc. A good variety of styles throughout the album too kept it interesting. Overall a good listen. Fav Tracks: Caught By the Fuzz, She's So Loose, Sofa Of My Lethargy
Fast paced and fun. Great rock n roll album
Excellent
Some great songs
Faktiskt riktigt bra. Hade bara hört Alright tidigare.
I'd forgotten how good this album really is. Straight ahead rock n roll with some great drum work. Back of the Bus is the stand out track for me. Supergrass were one of the truly great bands of the britpop era, far better than Oasis or Blur, imo.
so distinctly british it’s not funny, such a fun sound, especially the most famous of the lot “alright” which always sounds like a beatles song to me, really liked this album, fun to listen to
This is the second Supergrass album in row. I don’t know if they so this on purpose, but they shouldn’t. Pretty similar to the other one on this list. Fun songs, fairly original, some substance. I don’t see a big change in quality between the two. Suppose I’ll give it the same rating. 4/5
Another album that is famous for one song but I thought was better than expected.
I've heard "Alright" before, it stands out from the rest of the songs. Even though it's a one-hit wonder album, I liked it. Great energy
Yeah it's alllllllright
I had only heard ‘Alright’ prior to listening to the full record. It is great! ‘We’re not supposed to’ is not good, but I enjoyed the rest. 8/10
I know Supergrass not for the first time, and I can say that they make good music. This album I think is more interesting than In It For The Money, there are a lot of good tracks on the record.
bloody peak album. summer beach and venture vibes
I've only heard one Supergrass song, "Alright," which was in Clueless (I did also listen to Gaz Coombes's new album earlier this year though, which I enjoyed), so this was my first time listening to a Supergrass album. I thought this album was another solid Britpop entry on this list. I loved the unique guitar-forward punk sound here, especially on "Caught By the Fuzz." Even the songs that were a little less punk-ish, like "Alright" and "Time" were great, and they still felt at home on this album. "Alright" was easily my favorite track; I love the jangly piano riff that plays throughout the song, and the lyrics and vocals are incredibly fun.
Loved it
This kinda Brit-rock must be growing on my, I really jammed to this one. Felt like what I imagine being at a skate park in England would be like. Well most of it, why was that 10th track so Minion-y? Fun album though
Ultrachill, veramente piacevole da ascoltare, evoca un'atmosfera di gioia sfrenata che a me ricorda troppo l'estate, le note punk emergono molto spesso e completano l'album.
I loved the raw energy on the first half of the album and the second half had some songs with lovely melodies. Overall a fun and enjoyable debut album from the band.
I already knew a couple of songs. They were popular over here. I never heard the entire album before. I like it. Most songs are great, no bad ones. Favorite song: strange ones
Underrated Britpop classic
4.0
Alright is a real anthem of a generation in a way more over pushed bands wish they were, however Caught by the fuzz is the real stand out, the rest of the album is take it or leave it and ok. 4.1
4. Fun!
Ég hef alltaf fílað orkuna hjá Supergrass. Mjög gott fyrsta albúm!
Good album. Supergrass is one of those venerated lesser known 90's bags I never got around to.
Album starts off super strong. I'd Like To Know and Caught By The Fuzz are total bangers. While the rest of the album slips slightly, this is a solid listen and it's too bad I missed this back in 1995. I can hear how this influenced The Strokes and The Hives.
3,7
That single is atrocious, but I must say I was impressed with the rest of the album. Especially the last two tracks
Still think this stands up.
Objectively a 3.5. But it’s a lot of fun and brings back a lot of mid 90s memories
Get ready to kick back and party like it's 1995 because Supergrass' debut album "I Should Coco" is an absolute riot! These lads from Oxfordshire know how to rock out and have a good time, and they're not afraid to show it. From the opening track "I'd Like to Know" to the infectious hit "Alright," this album is packed with catchy riffs, upbeat rhythms, and hilarious lyrics that will have you singing and dancing along in no time. The energy of the album is contagious, and you can't help but get swept up in the good vibes. The tongue-in-cheek humor is a standout feature of the album, with tracks like "Strange Ones" and "Mansize Rooster" showcasing the band's wit and playful spirit. Even the album title itself, "I Should Coco," is a slang term that roughly translates to "I should think so!" It's a nod to the band's irreverent attitude and carefree approach to life. But don't be fooled by the humor - Supergrass is a talented band that knows how to write a killer tune. "Caught by the Fuzz" is a standout track that tells the story of lead singer Gaz Coombes' run-in with the police as a teenager, while "She's So Loose" is a rollicking anthem that showcases the band's tight musicianship and Coombes' powerful vocals. Overall, "I Should Coco" is a fun and infectious album that will leave you feeling energized and ready to take on the world. It's a must-listen for anyone who loves rock music, catchy hooks, and a good laugh. So grab a pint, crank up the volume, and let Supergrass take you on a wild ride!
I rather enjoyed this. I'm a bit too old to have gotten into this sort of thing the first time around and most of BritPop outside Oasis and the general Pulp v Blur sort of thing passed me by. I knew Alright of course, but, honestly, I'm not sure that I knew it was by Supergrass. I might have guessed Blur or Pulp. I'm that bad at this sort of thing. But I generally liked this in total and I'm glad I listened to it. I'd listen to it again so it's four stars, although whether it's in the top 1001 albums of all time is another matter of course.
This is pretty awesome and I can’t wait to spend more time with it.
I have to listen to this album a few more times.
i've heard this album before and initially thought that is was really top heavy and lacking bass to the point that it was annoying but now just realising that's a part of it that's unique and it's actually bretty good. Overall 7.5/10
Classic, listened to a few times before
4.5
My favorite part about this journey with you guys is that I never know what the fuck is gonna play when I click that play button. The second I heard them speaking I knew I was about to rock out and said audibly, "Fuck Yeah" and it did not disappoint. Heavy riffs and a surfer drummer this is what I needed this morning. "Alright" is their claim to fame with this album, should've found these guys sooner. All I want to do is drink Coors banquet and skateboard all day eating pizza with the dudes.
Yeah, a great album. Feels like a very lively alt/punk British pop rock that took a lot from the Beatles and their playfulness. Alright - I know that song!
This is great! Punk pop is such a vibe! It's kind of funny the most kitschy song off the album is the one that caught on. I like it all.
Fun and energetic. Great sound. Will listen again!
Sounds like a band right up my alley. I'm getting precursor vibes for Fratellis, Arctic Monkeys, Hot Hot Heat, etc. I really like the variety of power pop, polished garage rock, very slight grunge, and obviously classic British rock. Had no idea what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised, I could definitely see myself revisiting this. 4/5
Classic
Into it
The strongest Britpop record that could challenge the big 4. It's fast, wild, crazy, and fun full of memorable and catchy songs that take strong inspiration from 60s psychedelia (particularly Beatlesesque), Madchester, and a garage style in the vocals and heavy riffs. The lyrics are simple and light, repeating the themes of embracing strangeness and youthfulness which I'm 100% in support of. There's a lot of diversity in these tracks that everyone ought to have a different favorite, excluding their biggest hit "Alright." Last few songs tone down the energy to make it a satisfying and relaxing conclusion. There are a few ones I'm not crazy about, but I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
Enjoyed the variety. Starts off like fast and punk-ish, gets a little more pop-y ("Alright") and then slows down toward the end. For 1995 seemed somewhat ahead of it's time in ways. Got Jack White vibes in "Strange Ones."
Didn't recognize the band, and was surprised to find that I knew "Alright." Lots of spunk and vitality, I like the dynamics and tempo changes within the songs. I don't like all of these songs but most of then are at least tolerable. Really enjoyed "Time", nice groove. Kinda hate the cover art. An excellent debut, makes me wonder what came next.
pretty good actually, feeling generous
Really enjoyed this one. Fun sound and a wide variety of styles mixed together 4/5
Unexpectedly really enjoyed this album. Noisy but fun. The Strokes must have been influenced by this band. Saved a few songs for future listening m.
Couple of top tunes on this. Not enough to push to a 5 though
It was hit and miss, but for the most part I liked the energy
Fun and I know that one song
Fun album
Rock alternativo.
Solid 90s alt. Slows down a bit at the end but plenty of bangers
A little too indie for me to enjoy every song at max level, but this was a solid romp of an album.
Punk:👍Britpop: 🤷♂️ still a great album. some songs are a little weak tho. although I still loved them.
Excellent debut from one of the underappreciated bands of the 90s. Solid tunes, buckets full of energy and a solid base of influences that help this album show a variety of styles that somehow all sound at home here. Solid album by a solid band. 4.5 stars
Supergrass were underrated, at least by my. Eclectic and fun.
This was fun. I was familiar with Alright and I still think that song is exactly that, but theres a lot of better songs to be found here.ill probably check out more of their stuff and revisit this one again.
Høyt energinivå og overraskende mye dybde i denne plata her.
"Alright" is such a blast of nostalgia for me, it just nailed the carefree optimism of the UK in the 90s. "Caught by the Fuzz," "Mansize Rooster," and "Lose It" are all pretty decent, too, in a gobby, cartoony way reminiscent of Blur. But it runs out of tuns towards the end, which is surprising for a 40-minute album.
Alright was the only familiarity I had with this album before I got it and it’s still the best song on the album. It’ll never fail to get u in an upbeat mood and it’s just banging in general. Otherwise, sofa of my lethargy was another standout. The rest of it was good but was surprising given that I was only used to alright.
Some great 90's Brit pop. The entire album makes me feel 18 again. The feeling of no responsibilities, hanging out after school, doing things we shouldn't do. The instrumentals are fun and chaotic in the best ways. The songs are also very different from each other sonically while keeping the youthful album feel. From the very pop "Alright" to the punk rock "Lose It" or the punk narrative of "Caught By The Fuzz" and the more traditional rock of "Strange Ones". The influences of other great brit rock icons like Bowie and Elton can be heard. For example dongs like "We're Not Supposed To" could be on Bowie's Hunky Dory with its folksy rock vibes. The ending song "Time To Go" is the perfect ending after all the electric brit pop that came before, giving a toned down and somber ending. It's a satisfying end to an amazing album. Fav songs: I'd Like To Know, Caught By The Fuzz, Aright, Strange Ones, Sitting Up Straight, We're Not Supposed Too, Time, and Time To Go Worst songs: 8/10
Really fun listen
ok
I feel like “I Should Coco” and “In It For The Money” are out of order. “IIFTM” came out in 1997, but it sounds like a mid-90s Britpop album, looking backwards but at least being pretty tolerable for the genre. “I Should Coco” came out in 1995, but sounds forward-looking, almost a preview of the garage rock revival of the early 00s.
Great find. Thanks 1001 albums list. I enjoyed Alright and Time the most.
Whoa, I've never heard of this band before, actually? I've definitely heard Alright (though I can't remember where and it's really bothering me). That being said, this album really surprised me, and I ended up liking it a lot. Solid 3.5, but I'm gonna round up to a 4. Standouts: Caught By the Fuzz, Mansize Rooster, Alright, Lose It, She's So Loose, Time
A fun listen, even though im not much into britpop, 3.75
blande alltid supergrass og supertramp
Definitely need to give this a few listens. I had not listened to the album before, obv I know the singles. It's got a lot of energy.
Great album and Alright is NOT even the best track on it
4.5
I liked that. 4.5
Very much enjoy this album.
I liked a lot of the songs but don't really know how I feel about them altogether as an album.
Pop britànic efervescent, i mooolt noventer. 'Alright' és dels millors temes que pots escoltar si busques una guspira de felicitat instantànea. Però hi ha molt més: Caught by the Fuzz', 'Lose It', 'Time'... És un disc que viu per sobre dels seus emblemàtics singles. Impossible no sentir-se bé a l'escoltar-lo
I had no idea this band was this good. So glad to get past their one hit & give the other songs from this album a try. I have a feeling the more I listen to this album, the more it'll become a favorite. Wow. Good stuff.
Alright, really good one!
me re gustó 8 / 10
Great 90’s Brit pop album. A very underrated band in my opinion.
Pretty good band, "Alright" being a somewhat familiar hit. 7/10.
Fucking love this album! Mansize Rooster to Alright to Lose It is a great transition both musically and lyrically. This album solidly rocks with a sense of urgency, fun, and seriousness that is hard to pull off.
Buen album, noventoso escuchable
Excellent debut album, three catchy as hell singles and every track is a great listen.
3.5/5. I feel like this album is somewhat inconsistent. Some songs I really enjoy, and then others I have no interest in listening to. "Alright" is by far the most well-known song on this album, for good reason.
Good music, good vibes
There's a lot of this that sounds like Jack White.
Quite the rumpus. Mansize Rooster is also quite the name.
Fun, felt like growing up in London.
I liked this album. Don’t have much else to say.
Loved it. A fun energetic jam
pretty fuckin' catchy but it's really for kids
Alright is a classic, Ends really strongly with Time and Sofa of My Lethargy Lots of variety, was really impressed with the multi dimensional sounds. Didn’t expect the acoustic tracks to be so good
A lot of fun. A real find for doing this project.
Much, much better than I anticipated. They are more than Alright. Well, one track more - Man-size Rooster is cracking, and I didn't mind I'd Like To Know. Album drops off a bit mid-way through, but the majority of it is a real ride. Indie pop at its finest.
The first 8 tracks are bangers, unfortunately I didn't enjoy the subsequent songs as much. Still a very good album overall.
Enjoyed it, easily my favourite so far
I'd like to know - A Caught by the fuzz - B mansize rooster - C alright - C lose it - D lenny - F the strange ones - C+ sitting up straight - B shes so loose - D were not supposed to - F sofa - C- Time to go - C
Very much enjoyed this album though was still not 100% my taste
Another one I loved at the time but hadn't heard in ages. What a great album full of bangers, thrilled to have seen them play most of this in a fairly-empty Mercury Lounge back at CMJ in 1995 (and gigged with them when they were The Jennifers even earlier). Top notch, and they made some other good albums but I don't think they were quite this exciting again
I liked this band when they first appeared, bought their initial singles and 2nd album. Great fun, energy and sense of joy with their recycled nostalgia. Good talents, enjoyable and accomplished debut.
This was fun and exuberant with a kind of timeless, youthful British pop sound. I didn't recognize the band name, but I definitely was familiar with "Alright" which has always been a favorite song. So happy to hear more of them!
A fun pop-punk, summertime vibe, like it should be coming out a transistor radio tuned to an AM station in the basket of your banana seat bike with coaster brakes.
The love child of punk and glam , fully impish and a touch zany this is quite good fun. Way better than Arctic Monkeys, todays closest comp. Trying to recall if better than Superchunk a band Of same era. “Sofa of my Lethargy” is best cut and a great song. “Alright” and “She’s So Loose” and “Time” and “Time to Go” are also strong.
Not quite a classic. A lot of fun
Didn't think I knew any of their songs 'til Alright came on. I always thought that songs was older, has a kinks-y feel to it. Anyhow, great listen.
I need to listen to more of them.
3/5 22/07/22
Much more well crafted than I remember.
Check
My favorite Supergrass album I think. The whole Standard English Indie Rock Vocal Deliver Protocol is a little limiting, but this is the kind of music it fits best. Just fun and fast.
Love this
alternative "post punk"? not bad. wouldnt mind if it was already playing. didnt know that they played the "Alright" song.
Started out sounding like surfer punk and ended very chill.
Great energy! I liked it a lot. 4 stars.
I actually really liked this and would listen to it again. I of course know the song "Alright" from the Clueless movie soundtrack, but the rest of the album is tight and super fun.
Drummer is superb, and their infectious energy and evident polish, especially for teenagers, brings a lot of charisma
Supergrass: for me, a typical UK singles band, with albums -to which I had not listened for ages- that are solid at best. A while ago we had In It For The Money: 3 stars for me. I Should Coco, their debut is not that much different ..but the singles are even stronger and I like quite a few (but not all) non-album tracks as well - very surprising that Strange Ones wasn't one of the singles: 4 stars.
Aside from Alright popping up a few times on Spotify song radio, I was very unfamiliar to Supergrass. The first listen was irritating but did notice some quality songs, so played it again the following day and my opinion has improved a lot this time round. The singles aside from Alright (which was already great) went from annoying to pretty darn good and despite some of the corny tracks near the middle (i.e. chipmunk We're Not Supposed To), the final few songs made a strong high note to end on. There is a mood and a time for I Should Coco, but it's definitely a worthwhile listen despite a few bumps.
The first ever listen on this album led to a need for a second ever go-around. For this reviewer's purpose, that is a good thing. There is not much about this album that is spectacular, or that stands out other than a bit of a 'whiplash' effect from high energy punk 'wannabes' to rolling in the blues. Somehow, this works and that makes the album fun and that at least for this experience, earns its grade for being a surprise. Most people will recognize "Alright" through commercials, retail radio, etc., but the album overall maintains interest throughout, so much so that there will be a third listen-through and perhaps a new favorite has been discovered.
Sure grasps an element of fun. Good To listen to loud
A cool early Brit version of pop-punk.
Great fun album. Alright and Caught By the Fuzz are great tracks. Most of the album holds up nicely and it sounds like the band was having fun making the album.
Started with that particular sound that is typical of the punkier side of Britpop and I groaned. Then it turned out that every song was the band doing something different, and new, and exciting and generally just really really good. Alright is an absolute classic single which probably doesn't represent the overall style too well but certainly showcases the quality on display.
Very fun
Really enjoyed this one. Will be revisiting for sure.
I was surprised at how many of these songs I knew. I think I had heard of Supergrass before, but I don't think I knew any of their songs really. But there were at least 2 or three of these I knew from films or the radio. As a whole, this grew on me as the album progressed. The vocalist reminded me initially of Jack White. But the music doesn't really sound like his, there's a bit more variety here which I thought was pretty cool. All in all, this might be a band I look more into. I really dug this album. A low 4, at the least.
Still no Beatles and a second Supergrass album? Are these guys good enough to have two albums on this list? I don't know but I really started to dig this album after a couple listens. I definitely liked their second album more from the get-go but I was rocking along with this one soon enough. Like their second album, the first half of this debut is quite good and then fades a bit. Still, lots of rock attitude to enjoy and some variety to boot. My favorite track right away was Lenny - pounding sound. Alright is, well, alright - enjoyable (and more poppy) but a bit overplayed. At first I thought Strange Ones had sort of a confused punk sound but it also grew on me. I'd Like to Know is better (more consistent melody and sound), and it is also about what the strange ones get up to. Caught by the Fuzz and Mansize Rooster are solid; the latter is better while the former has a little something that annoys me. Both have the Britpop rock/pop sound with some keyboard jangle (think the Fratellis). Lose It has some nice edge to the sound, one of the best songs on the album I think. Sitting Up Straight has a fun frenetic pace (after a boring intro). I was less interested in the songs after that, except for Time. It had the best rhythms on the whole album - maybe my second favorite track. Maybe they don't deserve two albums on the 1,001 list but it was still quite good and I'm glad I got exposed to it because I only knew the song Alright before today.
This is a fun, cool album. Great debut. I'm not a big fan of 90s britpop, but this is definitely some intelligent fun power pop I can get behind. We previously listened to their second album In It for the Money. I liked that one but none of the music was sticking in my head for some reason. This one seems a bit rawer and pulled me in more than their second album. I liked all the tracks except for "We're Not Supposed To" which was kind of annoying. I watched the video for Alright since that was the big hit - I liked the callbacks to "The Prisoner" (e.g., the Prisoner bicycle and "rover"). I'll call it a 4 - a really good album that I can see coming back to, but not at the same level as a 5 for me.
This is a little more my speed than the last two days. Alright is a tiktok song!
Enjoyed the singles I'd heard before and the ones that were new to me.
Love this album. And I liked the next one “in it for the money” even more. Great 90s music, full of energy and fun.
Precocious teenagers set in aspic. Still fun.
This is pretty good. I liked the manic energy of the title track and 'Alright' was a throwback.
Favorite songs: Alright, Time To Go.
Better than I had thought it would have been.
This is a great album. Being raised on quite a bit of Brit-Punk this just gives me so many good vibes. Alright is just an all time classic. Only song I didn't really like was "We're Not Supposed To" which was just a really strange departure from the rest of the album. "Sofa Of My Lethargy" is a good track that just goes on for a little too long. This also might be the most upbeat punk album that I have ever heard.
This is a rating splitter. It starts off like a beast with hit after hit, but then it has a right wobble. If this was about 3 tracks shorter it'd be a 5 star but I just can't dish out the highest ever achievement any album can receive (5 stars from bort) to an album where you skip that many tracks. Shame.
GAZ! I remember these guys, they had a big hit with “Alright” kind of like a second wave Britpop invasion. Pretty good record deserves more listens!
Apparently this band is quite popular, but I never heard of them. Just know the sample of Alright being used in different songs. But this album is great! Favourite songs: - I’d like to know - Alright - Strange ones
Really enjoyed it! Super catchy and melodic, this is the kind of music that brings a smile to my face. I guess I should listen to more Supergrass!
I guess I just have an affinity for something about English Rock. It resonates on a personal, exclusively British level. Alright is rightly it’s showstopper.
Super fun album. I enjoyed it.
Brit rock done right. I’ve heard a few of these in ads or on the radio. Solid listen.
Really strong
Better than most britpop of the 90s. Hints of punk. Britpop with some teeth
This one screams rock and roll! It’s hard to believe that a band of kids would come up with this record. It is a collection of catchy songs with an excellent production. It keeps its promise and never feels slow or boring. Don’t know why Supergrass was not one of the big examples of the 90s Britpop movement, they definitely had the rockstar material and songs to back up such statement!
Lot's of fun.
Great fun - I think it’s an under appreciated album vis-à-vis it’s contemporaries - it’s a good punk ish album with a tinge of the kinks and a bit of its own thing - and the song ‘alright’ is a timeless classic - the perfect anthem for the youth of its time
actually really liked this one!
Some throwbacks which I recognised! But a slightly strange album
Bratty. I like it!
3.5
Leuk album, waarvan ik toch wel 1 nummer herkende.
The band slightly differ from the average, due to a more punk, Buzzcocks-like feel. (7/10) FT: Alright
The opening sound like the Horrible Histories Tv theme. Its like good pop punk. Enjoying it so far. Second track, Caught by the Fuzz is also good. I wasn't aware that Supergrass had such a punky sound to them. Track 4 is also a banger, though I like it less than 1 and 2. Track 5 also slaps. Goods - I'd like to know. Caught by the Fuzz.
Dang. I was obsessed with a string poppy-punk story telling UK bands from The Kinks to XTC to the Kaiser Chiefs. How did I miss out on Supergrass? In any case, I'm here now.
Great fun. Couple of loose ones
Jeeeeeeezus wat vet om weer eens te horen!
Energiek, puntig, opgewekt, en ja ook een aardig deel jeugdsentiment. Bij elkaar opgeteld voldoende voor een 4.
Honestly pretty surprised I never listened to this one. Always heard of the name but don't know I could name a single song of theirs. I expected pop but got pretty good rock/punk/pop mix. Then "Alright" came on and I immediately recognized the song and band.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: I’d like to know, Alright, Strange ones
Goods
Another cool British rock album from a surprisingly good band I’ve never heard of. Contains a lot of different sounds almost sounding like they’re from different eras, punk to hard rock, to even psychedelic music
Much better than a lot of the stuff that was around that swamped it
Feeling generous today!
Its a good rock album. The band doesn’t reinvent rock in their discography but they offer the energy and fun that has always transcended the genre. The last 3/4 songs offer the best writing on the album.
Qualitay
Verstehe kaum, wie nach diesem Kracher Erstling dann das sophomore „In it for the money“ folgen konnte, wirkt doch das dritte s/t eher als konsequentere Fortsetzung. „I should coco“ durchläuft dabei innerhalb seiner 40 Minuten selbst einen sagenhaften Reifeprozess. Fegt ein jugendlich kraftstrotzender Wirbelsturm über die A-Seite hinweg, fahren auf B wahnsinnig selbstbewusste Könner eine immens lässige Abfahrt den Mucker Mountain herunter. „Who could ask for more“ than 3.8
Keine Zeit gehabt zum Durchhören heute, Bewertung mal nur basierend auf wie das früher war: We are young, we run green Keep our teeth nice and clean See our friends, see the sights Feel alright Alles gesagt, fantastischer Soundtrack dazu!
Enjoyed this immensely. hugely Underated.
Solid bop
4.25
Like a best of supergrass this album… wall to wall bangers! So much fun.
Really good. She’s So Loose was the standout for me.
Ah yes, my vibe of alt rock. This is so fun!! I knew the original band of "Alright" was an alt rock band, but didn't know it was them! While these songs are all great, none of them stood out to me.
superFUN!
Fantastic album with really great hits. Love she's so lose and the classic alright
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! favorite tracks: I'd like to know, Strange ones, She's so loose, Time
A classic britsh punk rock pop 90's.
New group that I hadn’t heard of and really liked! What a range on the album. Will definitely listen again
Great album - young and free-spirited Essence of British naivety in the best way possible Light-hearted and fun! Lovely really. Fave tracks: She's so loose, We're not supposed to, Alright, Time, Time to go
rough first half, softer second half
HORRIBLE HISTORIES it's quite fun! would've enjoyed in my libertines phase i've heard 'alright' many times in ads etc.
Best Songs: Alright, Lose It, Lenny Worst Song: We're Not Supposed To
Really loved this at first! Great sound and energy. Toward the end there was the Chipmunk sounding song and it dropped off from there. Would definitely still listen again.
A good compliment to Elastica the day before. Solid 4, another example of the best kind of 90s.
Such a great sound, and a fun little album. For an album released in 1995, it has a rather timeless quality.
Coole Nummern BritRock a lá 90s
Production: 12/20 Songwriting: 13/20 Innovation: 6/20 Bangers: 20/20 Emotional response: 15/20 =66 A rollicking good one this
Love it
Ah, the 90’s
I thought this album was full of bops! The obvious hit is Alright, but I loved the first track maybe even more than that one!
Very good, need to relisten to find faves but solid all around!
Review accidentally uploaded under a different pseudonym - sorry!
Música boa mas sem ser muito meu estilo.
Good sound.
I was ready to really hate this based just on the album cover. Seemed like it was going to be real miserable. Guess what? It's a ton of fun! They have serious Fratellis energy.
Nice
Upbeat, cheeky pop rock. When this first came out I was in an "only metal" phase, so didn't appreciate it at the time. Still, had a lot less antipathy for Supergrass than I did for Blur and Oasis. Listening now, there's a lot I like. I appreciate "I'd Like to Know" and "Strange Ones" being like a call and response. Fave track is probably "Caught by the Fuzz"
i was surprised at how much i enjoyed this one. it was a nice blend of things i like: dreamy guitars, fuzzy guitars, punk-rock guitars...all kindsa good stuff. noe more album i likely wouldn't have given a second look without this list.
Bright and energetic britpop with a lot of songwriting chops on display.
I have never heard of this band, but I had so much fun listening to it yesterday. So pleasantly surprised!
Such a good vibe throughout, nice and punky but with some good backup vocals.
so good
Playing this album back to back with supertramp was quite the transition. This album transported me to a high energy and sweaty pub gig and I wasn’t opposed to it. Reminded me of charlatans vibes
