Reviews (page 4 of 8)
Of all of the lowest rated albums, I think this is the one I personally enjoyed the most. Yes it’s crass and abrasive and the kuntz song is insanely culturally insensitive (I think, still a fun song) but it never felt like an endurance test unlike almost all of the other low rated albums. Maybe that’s just because it’s only 32 minutes and is super fast paced but idk. I liked Kuntz and sweat loaf the most.
While I desperately wanted to cut against the grain of these reviews for these punk legends, I find myself agreeing with a lot of them. There's Sonic Youth's noise rock, where it almost lulls you into a trance, and then there's this where it's purposefully jarring. Can't say I'll revisit most of these tracks often, but I am glad I listened. Favorite track: Human Cannonball
Not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate this far more than any Metallica album. It's noisy, experimental and unlistenable at times, but never just pointless and "edgy."
Interesting and pretty weird
Off the top, I just wanna say: I get it. Y'know, why this is currently the 19th lowest rated album on the entire website. I do, honestly; I have sympathy. From what I understan, I can't imagine the Butthole Surfers are an easy band to get into. If you don't dig more experimental music—which, given a lot of the other album's in this website's bottom 20, most people don't—it's gotta be a real uphill battle. I mean, there has to be something there. Multiple publications wouldn't name this one of the best albums of the entire 1980's for nothing. Kurt must have had his reasons to put this down as one of his 50 favorite albums. So... What's, uh, the deal, eh? What did I hear? Above, I described the band as experimental. Now that I've taken in the album fully (I wrote those two paragrphs beforehand as preconceptions)... Well, it's still an appropriate word to describe them, of course. It's just not the single one I'd use anymore. They're more, like... "Noise." Big noise. Which, don't take that entirely in a bad way. There's still some melodies and riffs. It's just that they do whatever the hell they want, as long as it's noisy and abrasive. They do rock, sludge, punk... As long as it's chaotic and loud. And that, I figure, is the reason why it's rated so lowly. Some people can listen to this stuff, this noise, and hear the art of it; of the band pushing past and defying conventions and sensibilities. It's ugly, but that's what makes it so great compared to the formulaic and broadly appealing music of the mainstream. If you can't click into that, though... Well, then it's just noise. Too thick to penetrate and not worth the effort to try. And that's not laziness on their part; I mean, why waste the time when you know you're not gonna get anywhere? But that's enough essaying about other people's opinions. What about my own, eh? What did **I** think? Well, I can hear through the wall of noise and see what they're doing, but I'm not in love with it. It's just not the kind of music I gravitate towards, and there's nothing here that really convinced me to try harder. Sure, I did like a lot of the heaviness and sludginess, and that's why I can't give it lower than a 3, but it feel it says something that my favorite part of the whole album is the "Sweet Leaf" riff. And if I wanna hear that riff... I could just listen to "Sweet Leaf"? And VOL. 4? Maybe if I was sicker of the classics and the mainstream, or at least had more problems with it, I could hear this and be amazed by how unconvential it sounds. But I just gave a ZZ Top album a 4-out-of-5, and I can't tell you how many times I've listened to "Nothin' But A Good Time". I appreciate the underground—it's just not my scene.
This album is weird as hell, but in a fascinating sort of way. I'll just go for 3 considering it's so divided amongst the 1001 Album crowd.
I’m… uh… let’s go with a 3. I don’t know that I’ve ever had less words for an album after listening to it; it’s not that I think this is bad. If anything, its eccentricities, its cacophonies, and all of its intentionally delivered flaws and oddities make it one of the more captivating of the 209 albums we’ve gotten so far, for better or for worse. I truly don’t think this album ever lost me in terms of being attentive and aware. It completely fucking lost me somewhere in the middle in terms of my own personality, invaded my brain, and simply replaced me with a new man somewhere by the end. This album is a goddamn acid trip on a runaway train that, while you know it’s going entirely off the rails, you are sat down as if this thing is taking you to the destination that you don’t even know you want to go to. I truly cannot describe the intricacies of this album; it is a complete enigma, and I somehow feel rejuvenated and confused at the same time after listening to it. I may never know quite what overcame me after a single listen, but I… think I enjoyed it. It’s a 3. It’s a very weird 3. It is worth a listen, if only to experience whatever sensation I just felt.
i don’t really like punk that much but this was more artistically non-punk than some of the other albums from this list which made it more enjoyable
Fine. Some tunes are catchy, but the overall immature vibes are a little off putting to this old man.
Feels like the list heard my criticism of the last album and was like, how about this then? And yeah, this is better for sure, though still not exactly my thing. I liked the more fleshed out songs, and the weird noise stuff that sounded like they were just screwing around in the studio I could live without.
Pretty fucked up. Not so bad on second listening
I can hold up Hairway to Steven, not this.
Hey, with a name like Butthole Surfers it’s hard to take the band seriously. The songs Hay, The O-men, Kuntz are perfect examples. But the album is a fun, frantic, rollercoaster ride through a three ring circus with Sweettooth as the ring leader - so respect for that. U.S.S.A. is political enough to garner a listen from the 1001 creators, and with the weirdness and variety of moods, songs, and sounds this album is a definite entry. Still can’t take’em seriously. (2.9*s)
Listened to this twice to get a better feel for it and i have come to the conclusion that the Butthole Surfers are def a sack of weirdos creating pure randomness. This is album is a sloppy, slappy, twisted heap of sound scrap. I'm in for the pure anarchy but would not play a single track on its own. O-Men had me cracking up. Also so prankster to start the 1st track off with a minute of silence to fuck with the listener. How many people messed with their stereos? Bet the Surfers laughed their asses off making this album. Shows they are truley a bunch of clowns (album cover?). Give them an ounce of credit for I'm sure they influenced Beck with their style/word play. HAY...I've heard worse noise from the list...2.75.
Liked this even though it was obviously quite annoying. Feel like I could get more out of it but I got albums to listen to
This is one that I'm re-queuing for today. I didn't get to pay enough attention to it yesterday, and I think it merits another playing.
A very interesting album, I understand why people don't like it (because it isn't very good) but it is something I won't forget. I feel something like Melvins' Ozma to fill the early sludge metal spot or Mr. Bungle's debut to fill the weird spot would have gone over better.
A very speciel album. I Don't know If I like it Or not.
Some of the worst songs I've ever heard in among some really good ones that have a weird energetic sound. Just sometimes they let the sound get too weird and energetic and sounded like a dad that had many, many different drugs
I was aware of the reputation of the Surfer, but haven't really listened to them. This album surprised me with some highlights, but I still don't like them that much.
This is bad-trip music. That's what it's going for, to be fair, and it really nails it. I'm more preferential to the Butthole Surfers singles, but I do have a small amount of respect for this. Favorite tracks: "Human Cannonball"
Well - experimental and irreverent - had fun listening to it but not going to look it up intentionally in the future - doesn’t make it a bad album - rather more a good interesting oddity.
Idek dude I liked when they had a song in Thai
Horrible mais fun mais horrible
I’m rating this higher than The Wall, take that haters!
I thought I had this on vinyl but it appears I have their next album, which has their titanic cover of Hurdy Gurdy Man on. This is all over the shop - and that's why it's a great listen. Chaotic energy.
Better than I thought it would be.
A confusing, noisy mess of an album. Rather enjoyed it. It's all fun and games until the last track
I don’t know why people hate this so much. Is it the name of the band, the album, or both? I found it kinda boring and forgettable but I did actually like “Kuntz.” Maybe a 2.5 but I’ll be generous.
first listen. After a rough start I ended up enjoying it. Great guitar work
why was i so into this?!! no but really I get why this isn't some people's cup of tea but there are some really cool guitar riffs and some good songs in here 7/10
I had heard some bad things about this album, but I honestly thought it was fine. Maybe it’s because my expectations were so low going in and there was like one song that I thought was good, but I don’t think this album deserves its spot as one of the worst on the site
Cute, but trying too hard
I hate how much I enjoy this. It’s pure creative insanity… And of course it comes with ups and downs.
I like some avant-garde music, but this ventures just a little too far into noise for my liking. There are bits and pieces that intrigued me -- it's sorta twisted and weird, spooky at times and goofy at others, which I certainly have some respect for. I'd even say it grew on me a little as the track listing went on, but I just couldn't see myself putting this on regularly. I'll bump it up from 2 to 3 stars though, for uniqueness alone.
This album was ok. I appreciated the experimental nature of the music and the sampling. I may try to listen again, but for now: 2.7/5 -> 3/5.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would but still don’t think I’ll revisit it in the future.
Heeey
Ok. One listen and I've had enough. This record is pretty fun, and I think I get it. I probably won't listen again. The problem is that thumbing your nose as an artistic strategy tends to date your music. That kind of experimentation is valuable. It just doesn't tend to result in timeless music. Maybe timeless music isn't the point, and that's ok. Three stars.
Fun! Rowdy! Probably not one I’ll listen to again but a good bit of time spent in adolescence
My expectations of an album titled 'Locust Abortion Technician' by a band named 'Butthole Surfers' which has been a consistent presence on the Global Stats lowest-rated albums since I started this project (incidentally, this album suggestion is number 666 for me) were certainly not very high at all. And yet this was alright - sure it was pretty out-there and avant-garde, as you might expect of an album titled 'Locust Abortion Technician' by a band named 'Butthole Surfers', but there were some catchy guitar hooks and I really liked the drums on many of the tracks. While I probably won't be listening to this on repeat, it is certainly worthy of the 1001 list and I'm glad I listened to it.
This is weird but I don't hate it??
Gibby Haynes, you strange strange man
я чувствую, что это что-то бОльшее
This feels like they have a quirky SpongeBob kind of vibe but after listening to the last song about living with the trauma of sexual assault I read all the lyrics and damn they did not come through in the music.
This is weird. I like it.
Strange album with some good instrumentals here and there. Not sure what the idea was when making this... After reading up on it it's a bit cooler but I'm really not sold on the whole genre of psychadelic rock. If the intention of this album was to give someone nightmares it would be a 5 star but unfortunately this is supposed to be music. SATAN SATAN SATAN (light 3) /5
somebody is hurting the chickens and it is making me sad. Kudos on making the music they wanted to make but the underside of their design seems more angry, dark, and lost than funny or even ironic.
Highly abrasive, but does have some nuggets of musicality buried in there
Seems to be meta and they know it's bad, but are able to still make it listenable
I know the song "Pepper" by Butthole Surfers, but these are all new to me and this is my first time listener to a Butthole Surfers album. I do like to drop the name of this band into music conversations as often as possible because it's simply too fun to say out loud. This was cool! Super experimental music with a really raw punk edge.
Do I respect it? Kind of, do I like it? Not really. Some interesting moments but too much noise.
Nothing amazing
How the hell does an album like this make the list and not anything by Weezer?
Aika pörinää hitto vie. Siinä on joku lentänyt kasarin lopulla kyllä perseelleen. Tai ehkä perseeseen ottaen huomioon bändin nimen. 3/5
Jotenkin tää toimi yllättävän hyvin. Ekan biisin perusteella en ois ikinä uskonut.
Butthole Surfers - Locust Abortion Technician Not my favorite. I enjoyed Electriclarryland as an album better. Musically, it's amazing. The final song 22 Going on 23 is haunting. Not sure I'd listen to it again, but I can see why others might enjoy it. 3/5
I was pleasantly surprised at this album not expecting really much from it and I enjoyed it.
this is a pretty crazy punk record. i thought it was pretty fun. obviously a lot of ~noise~ going on on this one - if that's not your thing, i get it. but to me i really enjoyed the chaotic energy of this one. definitely a vibe album.
More discord than I was ready for today
I would barely call half of this album music, but it damn sure is entertaining. Not exactly "good" but it's deserving to be on this list. I liked Pittsburgh and the O-Men a lot. Some "songs" were trash. Soft 3
experimental and actually good.
Un curieux album, parfois agressante, mais intrigant
I wasn't sure about this one, but I found it awfully funny, and I think I was supposed to... Batshit crazy without being pretentious. I can get behind that!
I wasn't quite bored but I didn't have a very good time either and I don't really want to listen again.
lol
Not something I would go back to for pleasure. It was interesting and I appreciate the experimentation and funhouse quality of the music.
Not my thing.
Okay
I was enjoying it but it was over so fast
Weird. Very weird. Not bad.
It’s like the Residents meets Throbbing Gristle, meets hard rock. I can see why a lot of people hate it, but I like ‘Locust Abortion Technician’. It pushes the limits of bad taste and bad music and is darkly funny in the process.
- This album is really weird but I get it - Like a bad acid trip - Kuntz is one of the wildest songs I've ever had the pleasure of listening to
С мускатным орехом и кефиром альбом дотягивает до десятки 6/10
The kind of record that bridges the gap between the 1980s and 1990s. I'd never heard it before, and it's a great discovery. “Human Cannonball” is clearly 80s punk, while “U.S.S.A.” hints at the beginnings of Rammstein and Slipknot, to name but the best-known.
- Sweat Loaf
3 stars
Starts off okay. Then gets real meh and weird, but not good weird.
3 - so I think this made a lot more sense than black flag. It felt angry and angsty and did land. I thought I was going to really hate it but just didn’t. Some parts were really hard though.
Feels timeless and somehow very of the moment it was created.
Well it's a bizarre noise freak out for the most part, definitely not an every day listen, but I can appreciate it honestly. Call it a 3.5.
Was expecting to hate this album, given the name of the band and the low rating on this sight, pleasantly surprised, I enjoyed a lot of the noise aspects of this album, actually holds together pretty well, given this is different to all the Brit pop and 60s rock/pop bloating this list, I believe this deserves its place on the list, just not quiet up to the standards of Sonic Youth or Pixies in making noise rock. 3 stars.
This is not exactly what I thought it would be having heard the Butthole Surfers that everyone knows. I remember these guys as almost like a joke band from when I was in school. I'd only ever heard some of the stuff they released in the mid 90s. Although there's a lot on this album that could literally be taken away, I mean like 70% of it is basically just weird sounds, the actual songs are pretty solid. Some of it is vaguely Primus-esque but without the amazing bass if that makes sense. Some of it is pretty straightforward 80s punk. You've got a song in Thai with an accordion in the background. But all together it kind of works. A weird band with an unfortunate name, I feel like I can let this one rest.
Pretty good punk album. Great guttural noise.
I like the light and experimental aspect of it. It sounds like they are just having fun in the studio trying out different effects. But not really any I’d come back to listen to. Rating: 3.1
6 songs in and I don't know what to make of this. A weird mix of potty humor, expiramentation, heavy sludge riffs, and punk sensibilities. I'll give it a three because I don't know what to do with this.
Rating: 5/10
I'd definitely listened to this before, but perhaps my exposure to more weird music made this a lot more palatable than it was to me previously. That being said, there's a few tracks on here that are less songs and more experiments, which is cool in its own right, but I mostly am interested in songs. The songs are bangers though. 3.49/5
You’d think Butthole Surfers would be right up my alley, but I’m not that hot on them. I appreciate the weirdness to their craft but I’d rather listen to Melvins or Mr. Bungle. C
Now I know what Dave Grohl is talking about.
first listen super weird, but like not in the way i enjoy
I remember hearing about this band in the 80s and I admit I didn't pay any attention to them because of their name. My bad, I know. At the time, punk and hard-core and all that stuff was pretty widespread and I dismissed them because I thought, ugh, here's another juvenile punk band trying to be provocative and offensive, and at the time, that was so common it was really boring. Shock for shock's sake, and all that. Admittedly, as noted, my bad. Decades later, I try to be much more conscious of my many biases and filters. It's great when I can work past those because I often discover new things that way. Back to this album. It's a lot more interesting than I had thought it would be. More going on, more layers and styles, etc. It's probably my middle-aged ears, but I don't always hear the words being sung or shouted. And because I don't listen very often to really thrashy, dissonant, and heavily distorted music like this, some of the tracks were tough for me, but I readily admit that's due in large part to my conditioning and experiences. I do appreciate what they were going for here, and how they executed it. They are very skilled and interesting musicians in many ways. Kind of an odd thing for me to add to a record review, but I get the feeling the group's members would be very interesting to get to know. I get the sense there are some unusual thoughts and views in there. I always like that.
Cooked but rather fun
Better than I expected. Weird of course but some solid riffs
Crystal Castles noise was less than expected in this line of deterioration. Expecting a closed loop is unfair, but that slope was steep, functionally a drop exhausting the ears. Entertaining and surprising from end to end, though.
Uh, yeah it's something. The album reminds me of Captain Beefheart in some ways, but it's a fairly unique listen in its own right.
I tried, though not very hard, it’s noisy and weird as expected, but still good, would love to give it another shot.
Occasionally brilliant, occasionally unlistenable - I guess that's what you get from a band who are deliberately pushing around with what music is and how music makes you react.
Rock experimental. Ni fu ni fa.
Mmmm
65/100
Come Halloween, I am blasting this record from my house. This album just begs for the accompaniment of occult imagery and dangerously sporadic flashing lights. One review I read used the phrases "Psychotic Eccentricity" and "Sinister Weirdness." Yep. That about sums it up.
Prior to this album, I only knew the song “Pepper” by Butthole Surfers which I do enjoy. This album started weird, and stayed weird, but I think it got slowly better. Hay, The O-Men, and Kuntz were surprisingly good. I’m honestly surprised I’m giving it a 3, but I’d probably give it a 5/10.
It was alright, not my type though
I did not like the music, but I did like the sense of humor in the songs? I'm glad it's over, but I'm also glad I listened to it once. That's... an odd experience. U.S.S.A was my favorite song. Very glad to be hearing more variety in this list.
Interesting for sure. A product of its time. 5/10
Yet another band I feel that I've always known about, but never actually listened to. I enjoyed this - playful and experimental
Rock experimental. Ni fu ni fa.
Had some good laughs listening to this. The music sucks but it's great. Good job Butthole guys. Now get out of my sight.
What a weird album, but oddly enough - it was ok. With a mix of noise, psychedelic and experimental rock, this experimental album really pushes the boundaries for what you can do with limited recording equipment. Best: U.S.S.A. Worst: Weber
Not nearly as bad as I was expecting. Hated a couple of songs, but was generally vibing to the rest (to a certain point).
The kind of punk I prefer, weird loud fun cringe. I liked U.S.S.A. Made me think of what Merzbow could be if it was actual music
I like quite a lot of noise rock, but this one never did it for me. I am glad I listened to it when it came out, but never go back to it the same way I go back to Sonic Youth.
Very weird, but adored by a bunch of bands I love. Not my favourite, but pretty interesting
A decent half hour - stupid as fuck but a lot of fun.
som viagem, nao dos mais agradaveis de se curtir mas proposta criativa/irreverente
Third album by the Butthole Surfers. They are from San Antonio, TX, USA. This is their only album on this list. They are most known for the 1996 song, "Pepper" Genre: Noise rock, psychedelic rock, experimental rock, and avant-garde. Singles: None Notable Songs: Human Cannonball, Sweet Loaf 3.5
Not the worst
Hey that's pretty good for a noise punk/rock band!
Not always successful in its gritty mixed-media approach to song composition, but commendable in its attempt to offer one (1) creative, prescient riff on the grunge craze that would dominate and homogenize rock sounds of the 90s. If this one manages to stick around in my rotation, I could definitely see this one being a grower. There's a combative layer here that definitely rankles on the first go-'round, but some of my fav albums have been challenging, abrasive ones that didn't click until many listens later and this might be one of those.
Ok its a bit weird. Like a surreal hybrid of Sonic Youth and early Mercury Rev with an avant-garde MC. I remember them being played on the Peel show. Difficult to hate and love.
Bit meh
Eigentlich unhörbar, aber Experimentierfreude muss auch belohnt werden. Wenigstens kein 0815 Radio Scheiß.
SATAN!
Human Cannonball feels like it is far and away the most market friendly song here, and it is my favorite, but wow. This album feels like a look-book that grunge and punk would pull from all through the 90’s. Weird samples, spoken word segments, just noises, ideas thrown at a wall. Not a bad thing.
Started good. I liked sweet loaf a lot, just got progressively weirder and weirder.
Hated the songs that were just noise. Some songs were only a step away from being a great grunge song.
C’est tellement weird que c’est pas si mauvais, il y a quelque bout qui son juste mauvais mais d’autres bon. 2.75
Not that bad, interesting
3.5
I really don't "get" the Butthole Surfers. Sometimes they have tracks or sections of tracks that are super interesting. Then it's just noise for noise sake at times, too. Maybe I need to listen to more, but this doesn't rise to the level of "really good" for me.
Never trust an album with clowns on the cover. I think they have real talent and it shows through in some spots, but is ultimately covered up by their . . . need to be weird? 3/5
Noisy fun
It's funny because it's obnoxious and noisy.
Yea, weird but not too bad
Another band that reminds me of college days and what a great name for an album. This album ranged from punk to psychedelic to just just strange stuff. Loved the opening song, especially the "when you see your mom" part. Too funny Liked Pittsburgh to Lebanon and Human Cannonball. The line, "It used to be that loving you was easy, unrestrained. And Now I'm only bleeding, foregone loving, only pain." The story of many, unlucky relationships. Quite a few trippy songs, USSA, The O-men and 22 going on 23. 22 going on 23 sounds tragic and she sound like she's 72 going on 73. Overall, I had fun listening. Tough to break into a regular listening rotation, but a great first listen. Solid 3
I can see the creativity of the album and how it may have landed itself on this list but not really for me
3/5
Always down for some goofy guys just messing around on a record. Unfortunately most of the songs are too short or don’t develop enough to go beyond being musical ideas. I appreciate this being on the list, but there are better records of this scene that could’ve taken it’s place, not least by the same band
Respekt till dessa gossar för att de lagade brazy musik... hälften av låtarna va kinda tråkiga dock
Reminds me of listening to King Diamond when I was a kid, which both scared and intrigued me. This album would definitely scare most religious parents. Drug and horror movies and comics definitely contributed to the writing of this album. But it is nostalgic nonetheless! I will give the rest of their catalog a listen for sure!
Nonostante tutto (nome della band, titolo dell’album, copertina…) hanno un loro sound apprezzabile.
I like it
I admire the whole versus mainstream, dropping out without tuning in or turning on, DIY punk attitude behind it all - anointing yourself with a name most (at the time) radio stations wouldn’t and likely often couldn’t say is some pretty stark consequence-owning up front. And I’ve definitely enjoyed many a Butthole Surfers song, on a mix tape or jockeying a college radio show. At album length it wears thing real quickly for me though. The subversion doesn’t really point to anything else, maybe proudly so, and it’s fairly well documented hereby this point that my tolerance for noise music is low.
It was abrasive and weird but I did find it interesting. Noise punk isn’t the most accessible music, my partner is listening along with me and she hated it. I read up on the Butthole Surfers, their live shows were accompanied with nudity, fires, and megaphone rants. Not sure I’ll revisit this one but I’ll check out some of their other stuff. 3.5 stars
what in the actual fuck? this is the first album generated that i have no idea which star to rate ill just settle with a three i guess
Who are the hell are these guys? They're hilarious! Always thought they were a one-hit wonder for "Pepper." It's a bit of a parody album but they actually take themselves quite seriously as musicians. First five are noisy and grimey, very much like sludge metal but incorporating some elements of psychedelia in the production (like the distant chamber vocal or radio effects in "Pittsburgh to Lebanon"). They're chaotic and all over the place, but not loud. The transitional track is the annoying "Hay" which I think is a vegan statement, or maybe they're parodying themselves since it's their closer sped up backwards, but I don't know... it sounds a bit cool. Personally, I think the album does not warrant its existence until this point. "Human Cannonball" is a fantastic noisy punk track. It's simple, with a consistent instrumentation, but has an awesome wailing guitar and of course those unforgettable screaming vocals. "U.S.S.A" starts off annoying but then becomes hilarious and annoying, which is enough for me to approve. "The O-Men" is a funny parody sludge metal track on the band Omen, really interesting crazy studio effects here. I also really love "Kuntz", super funny and unironically not bad. "Graveyard" (again?) brings us back into pure sludge metal and noise rock, a decent track but mostly notable for its parodic nature, sounds a bit like Pavement. "22 Going on 23" is a decent way to close to album, but I didn't find it too notable beyond a couple cool guitar parts.
Well, that was interesting.
Interesting. 3/5
I was surprised to just see this band on the list and it doesn't even include the song Pepper, the only thing I previously knew about the band. This is probably the hardest review for me to do because I don't particularly like any of the songs but I think it's pretty innovative for the time.
Is this really an album? Definitely. Are these songs? More or less. Is it art? For sure, but not really pop/rock in the usual form. There are some catchy moments and the noise experiments are interesting.
Hmmm.
It's been quite a listen for a lazy Sunday afternoon. I've seen the band live a few times because I have a friendgroup that sees the Butthole Surfers as genius. I really don't mind them, but the feeling of 'weird because weird' always keeps persisting.
An absolutely batshit insane experience. Reminded me a bit of "The Pod" by Ween (Turns out this is actually one of Deaner's favorite bands, so that makes sense!). Noise rock has always been a fascinating genre to me, in a "should I seek medical attention for enjoying this?" kind of way. So yeah, pretty good. Strong 3/5.
Here we have around 30 minutes of the wackiest sounds you’re likely to hear. And I find it pretty compelling. I saw these dudes at the Burland Community Hall in Newtown in 1991. I wasn’t sure what to make of their set, but I loved the images being thrown onto the big screen behind the band. It was definitely part of the package. I loved Kuntz, partly because it reminded me of an American baseball card I have for a player by the name of Rusty Kuntz. Only in America. The production is great. Well worth a listen.
Mostly seemed like just noise but every once in a while it was an enjoyable noise. Adding a star because I just don’t get it but they clearly know what they’re doing
It's seminal for sure but is it any good. Some of it very much is. Some of it very much iant
Goede bak herrie, wel lekker
interesting experimental punk/rock, kinda funny but for listening purposes probably gets boring after a while
Not my thing
The album is better than the album title would imply!
Clunky assault on my brain Murmurs of Tom waits influenced tunes, of key trumpets and scratchy electronics Don’t listen with a headache or operating heavy machinery
Dit is all over the place, maar ergens ook wel weer facinerend. Het werkte in ieder geval goed tijdens het onkruid trekken in de voortuin.
Listened Before? N Oh Butthole Surfers. It's a blast from the past. A friend of mine in high school was a huge fan, so I'm conditioned to the experimental wierdness. I don't mind this record, but I wouldn't actively seek to listen to most of it. The major highlight for me is (surprise, surprise) Human Cannonball since it's the most cohesive thing on the record. Overall, not my favorite but I can tolerate it. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Human Cannonball
This made me laugh out loud and cringe all within 40min. I can’t help but reel at the 1987 cohort albums (Appetite for Destruction, Darklands, Sign O’ the Times) close by this album in my chronological listen-thru. Truly alien.
What a bizarre, disturbing and delightful listen. Never bothered to pay attention to this band in the early 90's but knowing this was released in '87, it's easy to identify that the sound and experimentation influenced much of the 'grunge' that followed it. The amount of one star ratings on this album earned it an extra from me but I doubt I will ever listen to it again.
Was thinking about it as a punk album that I didn't really love, but once I started thinking about it as a key precursor to grunge, it really opened up. Lots of fun. Strong 3
This legitimately sounds like it comes from a seedy underground pre-internet version of the darkweb. They would fit right in playing a closing number at the Bang Bang Bar in Twin Peaks: The Return. I'd imagine the Venn diagram overlap of people who like gory B horror movies and LSD users is where you find most of your fans of The Butthole Surfers. This is only saved from being a 2 by "Human Cannonball" and its driving rhythm - which I genuinely like. Other than that it just sounds like some weird nerds that are into some dark shit getting revenge on the world by torturing people with their music.
Super strange and something I'd probably explore further but not today. Fave: 22 Going On 23
nice
Well what an opening crazy energy. Crushing hellish messy aesthetic. Overall the album mixes fantastic freak outs with decent thrashy/sludgy music and then nauseating experiments and jokes.
What the fuck... Orgazoid vibes.
mó barulhera bicho
Locust Abortion Technician by Butthole Surfers comes at a period of fun, schlocky punk rock. MOD, SOD, and Scatterbrain helped make this genre popular. Not the bet representation of the sound, but I liked it nonetheless. 3.5/5.
2.8 - starts out strong and somewhat melodic, but devolves into a bad acid trip about halfway through. Just not really my cup of tea.
I enjoyed the songs that played with the contrast between sweet little tune and aggressive/manic sound.
You know when you watch a movie and think: "that was really good but I don't want to watch it again"? That's how I felt about this album. I respect the noise, the alternative directions, the pushing of boundaries, but it's not enough actual music to make me want to revisit
Original, but not right for me
what the fuck did i listen to?
Decent enough.
Interesting prog stuff
More interesting than I expected
Interesting experimental punkish rock. Not familiar with this album - I liked their later music much more than this. 2.5 stars and rounding up for their audacity to call themselves The Butthole Surfers back in the 1980s.
I don't know. I used to like them a lot, still dig the overall tone and the boundless creativity behind it all. But I'm old now, some of this just hurts my head, and honestly if I paid money for an album of music based on some tracks I like and found out later it was half full of donkey noises and shit I would not be happy.
Was planning on giving this a 2-star, until I heard 22 going on 23. This song alone is worth an extra star. What an amazing riff and the vocals of PTSD is horrifying. Truly a great song which saves this acid-trip of an experimental album by a band I thought I knew. Also a local Dallas-area band. The lead singer's dad was Mr. Peppermint!
straddles that fine line between deliberately annoying and inspired genius. Leans more toward annoying though. +1 star for giving orbital that sample for the beginning of Satan.
didn't hate at all, maybe I was just in a good mood. 2.9
Fun time for background music
I've heard a couple of their other songs but no idea what to expect here. The first song is called sweet loaf haha. And lol it even sounds like sweet leaf. 3/5 joke rock, noisy bullshit. Hard to give an actual score cause it's so dumb, but it's pretty short so 3/5.
I kind of want to give this another go, as I fear I wasn't listening carefully enough...
Scary album ;)
Weird...
It was ok, a little noisy in some areas.
Good album. Not at all what I was expecting.
Everything about this album is a lot.
Uplifting but little cheesy
Not the worst ever but can’t say I like it. Punk-ish but just noise and the voices aren’t great.
At least it was in English. Did not enjoy. I can't imagine myself buying an alblum by the Butthole Surfers. With good reason.
I don't love it, but I also don't hate it?? Way too grungy for me, but I can see why you might like it if that's your thing. First and last tracks are decent. The o-men is a bit terrifying.. 2/5 Top tracks: sweet loaf, 22 going on 23
116. Locust Abortion Technician - Butthole Surfers (1987) 6.18.26 Variety: 2 Adequacy: 3 Listenability: 1 Uniqueness: 5 Emotionality: 1 = 2.4 rounded down to 2 "Pardon me, I'm only bleeding" A whole generation likely discovered these guys due to Beavis and Butthead. Just a guess on my part, but seems likely. Outside of ultrahip tastemakers, the local Texas art/ music scene, the only options left for most of America at the time was MTV. That's certainly how I first became aware of them. One of the rare acts that Beavis and Butthead genuinely seemed to enjoy, I'm fairly sure it was the video for "Who Was in My Room Last Night" that hit me first. I'm not sure where I heard "Human Cannonball" first though - maybe a cooler friend had the cd? That's the only track from this album that stands out in my memory, though I know I listened to this whole thing at least once, now decades ago. I generally have liked what I've heard from these guys though I've always been a bit hesitant about diving in. The little I know from interviews, appearances, and articles is that they were early champions of Daniel Johnson, were one of Kurt Cobain's favorites, and put on some crazy live shows, which some ( including band members themselves) believe heavily influenced acts lke the Flaming Lips, though not sure there is any real animosity there at all. Curious to see if I remember any of this aside from the one track. THE TRACKS "Sweat Loaf" - This was an interesting rollercoaster ride, with a twisted acid rock dark ride at the state fair take on the classic Sabbath riff that kind of swings back around every so often in between some calming psychedelic bits. Imagine floating through the nice parts, only to round the bend into a devil's fever dream a few times before being spit back out into the bright of day. This must have lit more than a few mullets on fire back in '87. "Graveyard" - Slowed down, heavily processed vocals, some atonal noodling on an equally distorted guitar, and some deep, dark sludgy drums drag us down the stairs into the damp root cellar where Hayes and company are no doubt waiting in the dark, donning their clown makeup. Imagine your parent's hearing this blasting out of your room at the time. There might have been some worried calls to the local clergy. This feels out of it's time for sure, and not really like when you listen to Meat Puppets or even Sonic Youth who seem to anticipate popular tastes 10 years in advance. This still feels like it could have been put out today by some freaks in their garage with some cheap recording equipment, and feels simultaneously like an invitation to any weirdos who want an experience, and a warning to the normies. It's the bright coloring of a poisonous frog, daring you to eat it. Maybe it'll kill you, but maybe you'll have the best trip ever. "Pittsburgh to Lebanon" - A stomping, gravelly bit of cemetery acid blues. A good four years before Bone Machine was recorded by Tom Waits, this feels like a cousin to it. Angelo Badalamenti was playing around with similar stuff in his "Pink Room" track from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. His is cleaner and more of a demon rockabilly take, but check it out for comparison's sake. All noise and fuzz and darkly growling menace. Hayes proving he's a bit of a chameleon here. "HAY" - A musique concrete noise experiment that does little to fire the musical imagination, but works well enough as a sustained but of horror atmosphere. "Human Cannonball" - The main event. And it does not disappoint. I remember being a bit confused when I read this came out in 1987. I think they could have easily dropped this in '92 or even '93 and most people would not have batted an eye. Driving, and dripping with sinister energy, Haye's vocals put me in mind a bit of Jello Biafra. Awesome shit. Turn this up in you headphones til you can barely tolerate it. Another great driving song from the decade of great driving songs. Side B "U.S.S.A." - Industrial sludge, perfect for being chased around an empty slaughterhouse at night by those clowns from that cellar I mentioned earlier on. As far as pleasant listing goes though? Maybe not so much. "The O-Men" - This sounds like a GWAR song played at double speed on a beat up boombox that's sitting at the bottom of a creepy well on some abandoned farm somewhere. But at least it's recognizable as a song. "Kuntz" - More experimental stuff with what seems to be a world music track that the band has processed and warped through some tape looping and effects rigs. More on the audio installation art piece side of things, and another non music track. "Graveyard" - A much less successful take on the same subject matter as the first track with this title? By this point, while things are still pretty arresting, I can't say I'm enjoying much of it. "22 Going on 23"- This kind of sampling and fuzz would be made much more palatable by Rob Zombie a few years later. Another interesting failure. HIGHLIGHTS - "Sweat Loaf" - "Pittsburgh to Lebanon" - "Human Cannonball" MIDLIGHTS - "Graveyard" - "HAY" - "The O-Men" - "Kuntz" LOWLIGHTS - "U.S.S.A." - "Graveyard" - "22 Going on 23" FINAL THOUGHTS As much as I dig their more melodic stuff, their more experimental avante garde material, while interesting, leaves me uninterested in revisiting this album. I can hear a lot of talented musicians choosing to not engage with that talent in much of any sort of way that could be called a pleasant experience. I'd recommend any of the below as acts who take what's being done here, and one-up it: Jim Thirlwell ( aka Foetus), with all of his purposeful abrasivemess and experimental noise stuff includes sonic hooks and enough dynamism to intrigue me to listen further. Sonic Youth while often touted as the exemplars of noise rock are far more concerned with melody and song structure. They use the stuff as texture more often than not. Tom Waits goes about this sort of thing with a theatricality and deep love for the enchanting dark carnival atmosphere, and still manages to sneak in plenty of catchy bits. Big black is harsh, and hard without sacrificing listenability. Swans understand dark, bristly, unpleasant atmosphere in a way that somehow comes back around ot being pleasant again. The Melvins will bury you in the deepest, darkest, swampy muck imaginable and still melt your face off with catchy ass riffs. Mr. Bungle can terrify with creepy as hell weirdness, but retains a production style and a sort of cabaret like atmosphere that leans into the theatricality and professional musicianship, and provides enough seperation between the music and the musicians to maintain it's integrity as a facade. Butthole surfers, especially here, coud easily be mistaken for some anarchic scuzzball amateurs, who revel in the grimy, aggressive harshness for its own sake. And they don't want you to be able to tap your toes to this stuff, which does not hep to build any good will. This is intellectual anti-music. Butthole Surfers accomplished exactly what they set out to here, which is something to be admired. It's not exactly anything I really enjoyed, aside from those three highlights, but man was it something to behold, and it felt exciting and wholly removed from it's time. It's easy to see why it has the reputation it does, and I'm glad I listened to it, but I'll be happy with just a compilation of the band's catchier, easier to digest stuff. PLAYLIST ALTERATIONS - Keep the highlights. And even the middling stuff is not anything I'd recommend anyone listen to for pleasure. FURTHER LISTENING - "The Pink Room" by Angelo Badalamenti - Children of God by Swans - Hole by Foetus - Bone Machine by Tom Waits - Atomizer by Big Black - Gluey Porch Treatments by the Melvins - Bowl Of Chiley by Mr. Bungle
This is crazy. And really, there's only like 3 actual songs on here. The rest of it are more like what would be interludes on most albums. The actual music on the album is pretty solid, honestly. It's nothing special, though, so I'm having a really hard time understanding why this made the list. Yeah, this is too odd for its own good. Favorite Song(s): Kuntz
Honestly when this first started I just thought it was going to be some just lowbrow juvenile humor with some decent rock chops. But I see how it went on, it felt more like a shitpost. I don't know if that closing track was supposed to be funny or a social commentary but it failed on either account quite miserably period. Not the worst stuff I've heard in this project but I definitely have no use for it. (4.2) ★★
It seems like this would be right up my alley but I just couldn't get into it. "Human Cannonball" was alright, but as a whole wasn't taken by it.
There's something in here, I haven't quite found it yet.
2/5
Te goofy
I think this would feel better after a few coffees
This definitely art but not sure it’s music. Or music i like. And it is interesting but not something I’d listen to again.
Welp, someone must be having a laugh giving me this album today on top of a brutal hangover. I was so ready to give this album a chance, and then I heard “Satan, Satan, Satan”. Look, that’s only works if you’re going to give it your best deathcore scream. The music itself wasn’t horrible to start off though, it was just all over the place. The vocal effects were certainly a choice. There are so many weird sounds and ideas in this album. It’s a wonder it’s somewhat cohesive. Human Cannonball is the closest thing we’ve gotten to a song so far, so I’ll take it. On the other hand, USSA was one of the single worst experiences I’ve had going through this list. The O-men sounded like a metal clown orgy. I don’t think there’s anything I can say about Kuntz. Why is a Thai song being sung as a Bollywood tune, with the use of an English cuss. 22 going on 23 wasn’t horrible as a closer. I think this album isn’t as awful as I was expecting, but it’s still pretty bad. There is some ok music in there, but it’s overshadowed by the weird choices made with these tracks. I’m so glad it was only 35 minutes. 2/5 ⭐️ 149/1089
Maybe I've just heard one too many local punk bands in a sweaty basement, but I didn't think it was that bad. That being said, it was very boring for what it is. Like if it's supposed to be grimy punk, I want more from it. It wasn't that interesting to me. I think that's actually where this album falls the most flat for me. It's not committing hard enough to be noise and punk, and yet it's not melodical or lyrical enough to carry it otherwise. Reminds me of ICP for some reason. Maybe proto-ICP is the whole point of this band, and I have no idea. Positives: the songs and album are short, and the songs are distinct from one another. The last few songs were less boring and committed more to what I expect from a slimy punk album with cool influences. Again, not the worst I've heard by far, but not my favorite album either.
Locust Abortion Technician is an album that needed several changes to be anything good in my eyes. I can definitely see a lot of potential for this to be a very good grunge album, most of the regular grunge elements like the guitars are handled pretty well and some of the melodies were pretty solid too and the vocals could work at points. The problem is, this album felt it need to stick out so it decided to add so much of this avant-garde crap to make a lot of the songs really weird and that was where this album fumbled. Almost all of these elements failed to sound even remotely good and made this album painful to get through. It is a shame because if the album dropped all the avant-garde elements and went straight for being a full blown grunge album, it could have been good but alas, this album is just barely going above the realm of awful. Best Song: Human Cannonball Worst Song: Hay
Legit just noise. It opened hard and quick but seriously just noise.
Initially I thought this was a weird, cool album, but that slowly changed to me thinking this is a weird, annoying album.
Pretty expected of Butthole Surfers... And as someone who likes this band, it is a hard sell.
Enjoyed Human Cannonball and slightly enjoyed Sweat Loaf, other than that, nothing to write home about. 5/10
Can't wait to never listen to this again. I do like metal/music with a lot of noise, but oh my god this is just so bad I can't even take it. thank the lord its over. The only songs that stood out even remotely that I kind of liked was Kuntz and 22 going on 23. God this is actually shit.
I really wanted to like this based on what I know of their work, but this just turned out to be some punk avant-garde bullshit.
Chaotic psychedelic punk assembled from distorted guitars, primitive percussion, tape manipulations, and unhinged shouted vocals feels like stumbling through a collapsing carnival ride at three in the morning—disorienting, grotesque, and strangely hypnotic, with enough abrasive invention to make the ugliness compelling rather than merely obnoxious. The record weaponizes repetition, noise, and absurdity into something both confrontational and oddly immersive. Unfortunately it stays incoherent for me so I don't want to relisten.
Weird, dirty, jarring. Perfect for a band with this name.
Listening to this is a total mind bender, like walking into a fucked up funhouse. On one side, it's this crazy, abrasive mess, sludgey, and awful. That makes me wonder how it even made the must listen list. Tracks like "Kuntz" with its weird Thai samples and the heavy vibe of "22 Going On 23" are pretty rough to take. But, there's this crazy, chaotic genius hidden in there. The band's wild "Gibbytronics" and turning a Black Sabbath riff into "Sweat Loaf" show they're super out there and influenced grunge and noise rock. It's a short, intense trip into psychedelic punk that doesn't give a damn about comfort. It's not for everyone.
One of those albums where you see the name and the cover and think "Ah shit here we go again". Suprisingly listenable... for the most part. I hate it when a band who could otherwise write decent songs like Sweat Loaf and Human Cannonball decide to deliberately make bad and annoying songs because art. I guess thats punk for you.
Creative chaos
Okey album very experimental but totally not for me
Interesting piece of modern art. Some unique sounds and certainly gets across the chaotic and intense vibe I believe it was going for. As a pure piece of music for listening enjoyment though I think this one didn't quite do it for me. I feel like they have to either lean one way into the pure chaos, or try to maintain some level of actual songwriting. It was mostly chaos but the songwriting blended in just felt too simple and not thought out. Maybe I'm missing the point on this album, but I know other music Butthole Surfers went on to make and it's a ton more genuinely listenable than this...
Oof, this one was a miss for me. Started out promising with a weird cover of Black Sabbath's 'Sweet Leaf', but quickly went downhill with progressively stranger songs that were grating to the ears and borderline experimental in nature. I get the feeling the only reason these guys made it into the national consciousness was because Kurt Cobain said he liked them one time. 2/5
Mercifully short 2/5
Hilariously dreadful. Fully deserving of a 1/5 but I just can't bring myself to score it so low, given that it really made me laugh at times. The three-track run of USSA/The O-Men/Kuntz is unlike anything I've ever heard. Completely bonkers. So bad, I wanted to keep listening.
I feel like ‘The O-Men’ sounds like how it feels to get a lobotomy
With a name like Butthole Surfers, you’d expect this album to be terrible, but it was actually quite okay. The first riff was really good, but then I realized it was a Black Sabbath riff. Slightly disappointed, I continued. The next few songs were what I had feared, but then came “Human Cannonball,” which is a pretty solid punk track. The album is an eclectic mix of styles, ranging from Indian-inspired sampling to unlistenable messes of tracks, along with some sludge. Not the best album, but it was an experience. Also, at 30 minutes, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. Strong 2.
Ka faan last song kinda ok
I like the Strangeness of it all, the sound is weird and nasty. It works somehow
None of y’all see the vision here. It’s like if Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas started a band. That being said, I’ll probably never listen to it again.
I was also an ironic asshole teenager in 1987 and probably would've liked this at the time. Some fun noise and tape experiments, some dumb smutty jokes, but it all reads mean, or cruel ("22 Going on 23"). Honestly I kind of like it nostalgically, but you're not missing anything.
i think the name is interesting but like i don't think this album is for me
The 2 or 3 songs that resembled songs weren't so bad
There’s a reason the Butthole Surfers never really became a radio staple—and it’s definitely not because of anything on Locust Abortion Technician. This album feels less like music and more like a disorienting, full-blown nightmare acid trip—the kind you’d do anything to wake up from. It’s like someone hands you a glass of something to drink. You don’t even look at it—you just take a swallow. Instantly, you gag and spit it out. “What did you just give me?” you ask. “Motor oil. Good, isn’t it?” they reply. “Absolutely not. People aren’t supposed to drink motor oil.” “Really? I’ve always enjoyed a tall glass of motor oil,” they say—then snatch the glass back, raise it to their lips, and slowly drain it while staring at you, unblinking. That’s what it feels like when someone recommends this album. It isn’t inviting, accessible, or even remotely concerned with being palatable. It exists entirely on its own wavelength—one that seems fundamentally incompatible with ordinary human taste.
While I appreciate the creativity throughout the album, this kind of thing just isn't my bag baby (insert Austin Powers penis pump scene). It's often jarring and unlistenable and those "drug breaks" mentioned on the Wikipedia page for this album definitely played a hand in it's chaotic nature. These guys supposedly got a bit more polished after this album and the ONE song most people would know from the 90's is just as odd, but had a more straightforward structure. I could have never heard this and been completely content, but this list needs filler and this is precisely that.
Super weird and unnecessary. I expected better. They’re just trying to do too much - nothing organic about this.
What the fuck. Its just an album of total nonsense. More than half the tracks on here are something I would never even want to listen to again. Then theres human cannonball which is just casually one of the best songs I've heard since we started using this website. 2
Like a pizza cutter: all edge, seemingly no point. Most of the songs seemed to transgress for the sake of transgression alone without a message or any meaningful follow through on the reason behind the rule breaking.
AI ain't got shit on these guys
A weird random all over the place album
Another album I didn't have to hear before I die. At least it was short...
My life has always been Butthole Surfers - adjacent. I know of them and have heard a bunch of their stuff. But never Locust Abortion Technician. After listening, well, this is pretty par for the course. Classic serial-killer rock album. It's hard to argue that this is a good album. It's less noisy than it is mostly just noises. There are a couple real songs interspersed in between the weird ambient tracks. There are some nice guitar parts and instrumentals buried in there if you can find them. This album is attention grabbing for sure, but I wouldn't say it's good or influential. I tend to go for the weird stuff, but this was pretty beyond anything I'd want to listen to again. I've heard worse and more boring though. Gonna be a 2/5 for me.
Heel taai. Paar oké nummers
If someone on purpose makes music that's supposed to be hard to listen to, and it IS hard to listen to, is it good or bad? Still subjective of course. I understand the artistic idea of challenging the listener/observer, or making them reflect on their relationship to music and expectations of it. But even trying to be open-minded, that's a bit too much challenging for me.
Hmm maybe not
I do not like this type of music. At least it was slightly more enjoyable then Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica.
ououou die dudes. ha zerst denkt öpis lauft falsch wells afoch stilli isch am aafang. jo sie hassed gängigi struktur. sehr fest.

Noise. But some of it interesting 2.
My girlfriend revoked my aux privileges.
zu krachig
Not my thing even though I’m typically into plenty of dissonant noises shit
I wanted to like this. But no, it's kinda like what inspired bevis and butthead.
More parody than progression
I can enjoy psycho junk nightmare rock just as much as the next guy. And sometimes you've just gotta grit your teeth and listen to a Butthole Surfers record. As my thoughts wandered (trying to escape) I inhabited a scene from "The Jerk" with Steve Martin where he's at a gas station, some kind of sniper is shooting at him but missing and hitting engine oil cans. Steve proclaims, "They hate these cans!" So on "Locust Abortion Technician" it seems evident, "They hate these guitars!"
Honestly, the problem with this is not the noise. There are other albums that weren't particularly pleasing but that I still rated a 4/5 because I thought maybe they were revolting and original enough to actually be quite good. But that's the thing, I don't like this album not because of the noise —I actually think the most obnoxious parts were the best—, but because I simply didn't hear the spark that ties it all together. So it doesn't compensate for the annoyance. Too much of the first side was a bit boring to me. The second side, though, is much more interesting and saves this a bit. 2/5
That's a no for me dog.
This is experimental art/noise rock with some ideas of what a song is mixed in. I will give them credit for the "SATAN" yelling because I like that one Orbital song on the Spawn soundtrack where that sample is the only lyric. Other than the first "song" this is really too much for me. It's a 2 for doing this weird shit in 1987 and for the experimental value but other than that...bad.
I’m not really a fan of noise punk, which is what I consider this. Why anyone thinks this is a “must-hear” record is beyond me. There are parts that are interesting and certainly, I can “get” the creative aspect, but I don’t really have any inclination to listen again or check out anything else by them.
Weiiirrddd
I hate this less than the first time I heard it
Wasn't complete crap but it also wasn't good either
Probably the fathers of ICP, this band is made up of a bunch of clowns.
The album opens with a sludge of guitar on Sweat Loaf, a clear reference to Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf", setting the stage for the forthcoming album which sounds like musical satire of itself. It was nice to listen to some proto-grunge with a lot of punk sounds, but the music itself seems like something nobody expected anyone to enjoy, and they probably shouldn't. Investigating the origin of the name Butthole Surfers led me to some of the band's former names, which I rather enjoyed: The Dick Clark Five, Nine cm Worm Makes Own Food, The Vodka Family Winstons, Ashtray Babyheads, Ed Asner Is Gay, Fred Astaire's Asshole, The Right to Eat Fred Astaire's Asshole, The Inalienable Right to Eat Fred Astaire's Asshole, Zipgun, and many others.
Not their best
Sweat loaf - 4 Graveyard - 2 Pittsburgh to lebanon - 2 Weber - n/a Hay - 1 Human cannonball - 4 U.s.s.a. - 2 The o-men - 2 Kuntz - 3 Graveyard - pt. 2 - 3 22 going on 23 - 2
i'm sorry but this just fucking sucks. it's like they were trying to make a rock album that sounded as uninteresting and actively painful to listen to as possible. random shit just keeps sounding off and it's a nuisance to hear. i cannot imagine a single context where i would decide to put this album on and enjoy the experience.
Very challenging to enjoy, elements of fun, but swamped by odd choices that make this a non-essential listen. Kuntz particularly was just unnecessary, coming from a man that has a vulgar tongue, this was just not needed.
Unpleasant but not boring.
Yikes idk
Not as bad as I thought it would be
It's really really not for me. That's why it's a bit weird for me to judge. I have to give the ambition and energy some respect, but there's too much bs on here to take it seriously. Maybe it's not that bad, but definitely not my taste. You need to smoke a lot of weed to get it, probably. So, a flat 2.
Noisy and weird
the butthole surfers do have some good songs. they were not on this album.
I'm not sure I enjoyed that but I do respect it.
It's not that it's heavy that's unappealing: it's heavy and pointless. It's the late 80s grunge-metal version of a fidget spinner.
Based on the artist and album name I was pretty apprehensive about this. I suppose I was relieved that it wasn't quite that bad but still... and that last track was really weird.
The voices get lost behind the sound the instruments, but I'm not sure hearing them would have made this experience any better. The cover art is cool though
Thoughts before listening: The Butthole Surfers have been a band on my periphery for a long time, but other than their 90s hit "Pepper", I have never really spent much time listening to them. My understanding is that in the 80s they were mostly a psychedelic leaning punk rock band so that is what I am anticipating the sound on this album will be. Even if I do enjoy the music, I fear the sound quality might be a turn off as it is with many of their contemporaries i.e. Meat Puppets, Replacements, Husker Du, etc. Review: So I guess if you consider purposefully abrasive and unlistenable to mean psychedelic then my description above is accurate. There is exactly one song that I enjoyed on this thing and it was "Human Cannonball". I'm okay with bands putting 1 or 2 weird for the sake of being weird noise songs on an album, but it has to be surrounded by otherwise solid tunes. That's not the case here. 2-stars cause "Human Cannonball" is good and I appreciate the band's importance to the overall alternative/indie rock scene.
First song was fun but the rest just didn't have that.
Yea... nah
I would probably have loved this back in the 80s in my hugely alcoholic headbanging years. Now - not so much. In fact, it's a huge pass from me.
I remember this was one of Kurt Cobains favorite albums and buying it It early in 1989 and noting it was all over the place in style and really jarring. I was expecting more like the Rembrandt pussyhorse album and was a bit disappointed. But this album cover was a favorite T-shirt of mine.
It wasn't actually that bad just sounds so lazy
There was one song I enjoyed on this, it seems to be before they got their footing. I enjoy their later stuff much more, this was just noisy for the sake of it.
I liked their later stuff more but I’m sure this was a completely new sounds in 87.
What did I just listen to?
I quite fancy noisy, experimental and "weird" music in general, but that doesn't mean this wouldn't still be pretty shite. They also have this specifically absurd, yank style of humour that I can't tolerate at all.
This wasn't boring at least.
I would enjoy the Butthole Surfers so much more if I found them funny at all. Sadly, no dice. I appreciate their approach to songs: experimental in the literal sense - "let's try this!" On that count I would still give a slight edge to the album "Hairway to Steven" over this one. All in all my opinion hasn't really changed since I first discovered them: for a noise / comedy / shock band, they aren't noisy, funny or shocking enough to really grab me.
