thank god that's over Would I listen again? Maybe Deserves to be on this list? NO 1.5
Maybe the only band from Azerrad's 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' that I haven't checked out yet. And seeing as I love so many of the bands featured in that book, I was hoping that this would be up my alley. And while it sort of is, I do think its general directionlessness and very (very) rough presentation ultimately hinder the overall experience. Unlike a group like Big Black, that perfectly balanced noise and cacophony with genuinely interesting lyrical themes, melodies, and song structures, Butthole Surfers opt for the more in-your-face "Here's an idea we came up with, but didn't necessarily bother developing it into anything worth a damn" approach. And there are some interesting ideas and moments to be fair, the super short 'Weber', for as ear-piercing as it was, actually sounded pretty sinister when the drums kicked in and the dial on the reverb got turned up. 'Human Cannonball' was maybe the most fleshed-out song here, sounding like a twisted Joy Division song at times. The closer '22 going on 23' had maybe the best guitar solo and core riff here, but I'm not sure how I feel about the way the vocal sample (revolving around a traumatic sexual assault) was used, though I'm sure it was well-intentioned. Aside from those few moments, though, I do think this album sort of ended up falling flat for me. I can appreciate them pushing this style to its absolute limits; it's as dirty and messy as you'll get in the late '80s. And it's generally consistent, say for maybe the super out-of-place (and frankly tacky and boring) opener 'Sweat Loaf' and the oddly serene 'Kuntz', which sounds like it's mostly sample-based? But it's all a bit too much, even for me. But yes, they're obviously super influential. I see many industrial groups taking notes from this album or group.
What the hell was this fever dream
this album is insane! I did enjoy the really rough distorted guitar, and I found the instrumentation of ‘kuntz’ interesting. i would listen to graveyard - pt. 2 again. i listened to the first two thirds at work, then had to stop at o-men because i physically could not stop laughing - the vocals for that one are really something! the last song is interesting, i feel like it was ahead of its time in a way. had the thought of ‘someone who’s 22 wouldn’t talk like that!’ but of course. it was the late eighties. overall a kind of assault on the ear but enjoyable at times.
Rough
Bedre enn frykta
Weird. Hay. 2/5
I know for a fact that this is no one’s ’no slip’ album. who tf listens to this
Got tired of them fairly quickly. Just sounded noisy
Track 1: this is a little weird, but I kinda dig it. I don’t really get why this is rated so low. Track 2: ah, there it is. There’s actually some to like here. “Human Cannonball” and the two tracks bookending this one are solid. The rest of it is exactly like I’d imagine a band called ‘Butthole Surfers’ to sound like.
If I could give this negative stars I would
Keine macht den Drogen 2/5
Well, if you wanna be edgy I guess this is the album for you.
I liked some of it and didnt like a lot but didnt love any of it
"Human Cannonball" is the only song saving this from being a 1
I like the Butthole Surfers, but didn't really like this one much. Too avant-garde psychedelic for my tastes. Prefer the more mainstream Independent Worm Saloon and Electriclarryland sound of theirs.
How did this just keep getting worse?
I prefer Pepper over any of this
WTF was that? This is terrible, but also…a part of me, deep deep down, was entertained? And I’m ashamed of that.
I’m glad this was only 33 minutes
No
This is like the Melvins meets Beefheart… but it’s total dogshit. I kind of enjoyed human cannonball though.
Thought I'd enjoy this album more bit it's a little to experimental for my taste. I don't really care for long instrumentals.
This album is wild. The opening song, Sweat Loaf, is immediately attention grabbing and unique. Not what I was expecting. A bit TOO experimental for my taste.
Ekki minn tebolli, og pínku leiðinlegt á köflum, en þó ekkert sem stuðar neitt svakalega. Svo eru áhugaverðir kaflar og sumt jaðrar við það að vera skemmtilegt.
Just no.
Bizarre
Its a 2
Ween with no musical ability
Not for me thanks
I usually only heard of butthole surfers as the butt of a joke before this list. its filthy and grimy distortion laden rock, and not much else. I cant vibe with this, also a lot of it is just straight up odd, perfect example being Hay. It seems like more of an experience than just an album, and I want off the ride.
A bit too confused and erratic for me.
Like, I want to score these albums in an objective way but I just don’t know how to vibe with what was going on here.
Umm... hmmm... uhh... well, idk Some parts I was vibing with but a lot of it came off as noise. I wish we got a few more straight forward songs on this one; I think most of them were a little bit too artsy/noisy for me to enjoy the whole experience here.
There were a few songs here that made me believe in this album, even if just for a few seconds. Then, they would do something so bizarre that I remembered the name of the band. I suspect that whatever impulse that drives one to say “Yes, I am the lead singer of the Butthole Surfers” has to drive them to making other questionable musical decisions. 1.5-2
If every song was like Pepper I’d like it but alas
I appreciate this for being out of the box and arguably a little ahead of its time, but I just wasn’t into it. I like a couple of their songs in general but not this record.
Uh yikes. Pretty much what I expected an album from these guys to sound like.
This is tough. Very interesting and unique and I bet it influenced more than I know (felt like some of the distortion and noise was very grunge). But not sure I loved it. 2.5 but rounding down.
As much as I want to round up in support of some Texas boys, one of which grew up a few minutes away from me, this is simply too much to call enjoyable. I thought Sweet Loaf was an interesting riff on Sweet Leaf but that's basically the only positive thing I can say about this album. Props to them for going for it and being truly insane. Just not my tempo. 2.5/5
The innermost reaches of my soul were delighted and transported by the delicate and sublime melodies, the angelic harmonies, and the enrapturing quiet beauty of this gentle and life-affirming miracle of an album.
Very tough sledding for me. Only giving it a 2 to acknowledge their significance and the fact that there is some substance to the music, but this was in no way an enjoyable experience.
First looking at the cover I was like "well fuck I know exactly what this is going to be like and I am not going to like it" and then I heard the first song and my initial 30 seconds I was like I was right, then the rest of the song really wasn't TOO bad and I was like I kinda liked this instrumental. Then I heard the rest of the album. Sometimes you can judge a band based off what they name themselves. 5.05/10 2/5
2 out of 5 Too loud and too screechy. This was not good.
I understand why it is on the list, but I am not a big Butthole Surfer fan.
At least this was only 30 minutes of noise.
2 Stars (5/15)
Experimental earlier punk which is fun but not a repeat listen.
This is a hot mess. I get that some people love them, not for me. Safe to say I will never listen to this again.
Interesting..
Not very keen. Bit fractured and noisy.
I am not the target demographic for this album…but I made it through so I’ll give it 2 stars.
This was... something.
A little too disturbing and abstract for me.
It's not one-star worthy, because there were moments where I was genuinely amused by what I was listening to, but damn this one was a tough one to get through.
Yeah, I was initially excited to see this album pop up as my selection for the day, because there are some Butthole Surfer songs like "Dracula from Houston" and "Pepper" that I really like. Apparently, those songs are outliers and not at all representative of the group's larger body of work (except, perhaps, in terms of lyrical irreverence). Neither of those songs are on THIS album, which is yet another example of the compiler's over-fondness for noise rock. It's a great reminder of the subjective nature of any endeavor like this. "Where's the Warren Zevon?" I keep asking myself. In vain. Some days it's hard to continue, knowing that I have nearly two years left and will NEVER be greeted by Warren as my album of the day.
Repetitive noise garbage. I don’t see how this is a must hear before you die albums
point7.
Meh
C'est très punk
LMAO I can't believe they made us listen to the Butthole Surfers. Not nearly as bad as everyone on here says it is. It's fine, it's perfectly fine album Best Song: Human Cannonball Rating: 4.5/10 Stars: 2
This album is chaotic, abrasive, and deliberately disorienting. It throws structure out the window in favour of a nightmarish swirl of distorted guitars, strange vocal effects, and unsettling samples. Right from the opener “Sweat Loaf,” it’s clear this isn’t trying to be a conventional rock record. It’s more like a surreal audio experiment designed to unsettle as much as entertain. There are flashes of creativity buried in the noise, and the band’s commitment to their weirdness is impressive, but a lot of it ends up feeling more like provocation than something I’d want to revisit. The lack of clear structure or hooks makes many of the tracks blend into one long, disjointed experience. It’s unpredictable, but not always in a way that works in its favour. I can understand why it has a cult following and why it’s seen as influential in experimental rock circles, but for me, it’s a tough listen. It’s more interesting as a document of a band pushing boundaries than it is enjoyable as an album.
Actually not as weird as I was expecting: Tbh needed to be weirder to justify the name. Simpsons: No
I prefer Snakebite Abortion Technician
Way out there
About 30 mins, 15 of it is just “avant garde noise rock.” I imagine this album is a big deal because it’s “different” but as a stand alone piece of art it kinda sucks
Sweat Loaf and Human Cannonball are good, the rest of the album is a mix of sludge rock and art noise experiement.
These guys have some great music. But not on this album
Not using a private spotify session for this one, but I am going to wait until I wake up some as this might be maddening. There are bands I appreciate in small doses and I have always imagined the Butthole Surfers would be one of those groups which why I have never listened to an entire album from them...my intuition was correct. Interesting, but images of doing speed in a dive bar's mens bathroom fill my head.
I actually liked a few of these songs, and even the worst Butthole Surfers song is better than the best Kid Rock song. Enthusiastic 2 stars.
It was very daring rather than to release an album of songs to instead release a recording of their warm up jams. At first I thought they at least sounded like they had a technical knowledge of the blues although that turned out to be just one riff on repeat. And was this recorded in an abbatoir wtf? At least it's only 32 minutes.
I would have loved to become a fan of Butthole Surfers but it wasn’t in the cards! Felt like I would have appreciated live but can’t imagine putting this album on again.
Well, this didn't hit for me. I know I had a Butthole Surfers CD back in the day, and I remember liking it a whole lot more than I liked this.
???
I’ve wanted to like these guys so bad but I just can’t get it. It’s just noise, well at least this album is.
Kuntz
The first half of the record I liked. Decent experimental rock, not dissimilar to Sonic Youth. Second half ruins it though, just descends into purile nonsense. I actually think the last track about sexual assault and depression is quite considered. But this doesn’t really land because of the tracks that immediately precede it. Strong 2/5 (5/10)
The Butthole Surfers’ music is not horrendous but it is full to the brim with affectations, disparate ideas threaded together with an implied “can you believe we just did that?” It lacks the adolescent charm you’d hope for. It also lacks the core of an amazing idea which you can hang the rest of an experimental rock album off of. I like that it’s very manic, weird and full of variety - but that’s about it. Ultimately they’re aiming for “woah!” and “huh?!” but instead inspire “hmm.”
Favorite Track: Human Cannonball
This album is only getting two stars from me because of the song “Human Cannonball”. This wasn’t music, it was performance art…had to listen under the influence to experience anything except “WTAF”
This album is like a bad fever dream.
Didn’t find this too interesting. Musically wasn’t bad, but just didn’t really grab me. 2/5 Won’t listen again
I appreciate bands that operate a little against the grain, and when Butthole Surfers actually set themselves to write a song, I generally enjoy it even though it tends to be pretty weird. The problem is that they don't really set their minds on writing actual songs on this record very often. It strays away from actual songwriting pretty quickly and stays in this place of weird "soundscapes", which I don't have a ton of time for. So, I like that they're willing to "weird out", but I wish they'd rein it in long enough to write some cogent songs. 2/5
weird band name, weird album name, weird song names, weird lyrics. its all weird and very unique. weird enough to be interesting?
Not really mh style but I'm.shre someone elses ;)
Sounds like playing an album backwards. Dark and growly, also screachy. Lots of random noises that seem unpleasant.
Aikamoista melusaastetta
There is experimental music that is also proficient - and while I understand the kind of deconstructionist movements within arts, when it gets to the point of being bad for weirds sake it just feels like I’m being trolled.
Ok
Band's name suits them well! Ugh
Day 21. Hated this on first listen then liked it a little more after each subsequent listen. Definitely interesting, possibly one I’ll like more after some time. 4/10 Highlights Sweet Loaf Human Cannonball
Got to be in the mood. Lots of noise and distortion instrumentals. Some good punk sings interspersed. Artsy
Wow I am so excited to listen to the new album by the Butthole Surfers. Haha butthole. Anyways I was really trying to settle in and enjoy this but every other minute of the opening track just started being random noise which ruined the vibe and the rest of the album followed suit so I don't really have any favourites except for Human Cannonball which was the most normal sounding song. Didn't like this, but at least it was short. 2
Didn’t have enough of the right acid for this one to really hit for me. Too much of the weirdness without enough of the melody for me. A band as wild as its name and capable of some cool stuff. This one had its moments that sunk in with my mind but not enough to be a defining album.
Not my thing at all
First part of the album isn’t terrible. Second half is. 2 is probably the right number.
It works as an album. But there is so much insane stuf going on I don't know how to rate it. I wouldn't listen to it again, but it stays with you. It could be any rating and I would agree, but purely on the relistenbility, 2 stars.
My feelings exactly when I‘m in one of my frequent depression phases. A bit too accurate for my taste. Beautifully nonsensical noise fun. But not music to put on for enjoyment.
I think I get the point, just think it’s a lame one to make.
I am so glad I heard this, such a great listen. Now it’s one of those albums I feel like you have to listen to x10 before you get it and it’s more of an experience than picking songs to add to your playlist type album. Now even though I enjoyed this so much most songs were borderline terrible but that’s the point with it being so experimental and just noisy. 100% deserves to be on this list and I’m very glad I listened to it with my favourite song being the first one Sweat Loaf and 22 going on 23. I’m not going to excuse it being a good listen for it being terrible but that’s why it’s not a 1/5. This doesn’t deserve to be put with the other 2/5 albums because how much I loved and I hope I can boost it higher but for now this is getting a 4.7/10 2.3/5
I'm not exactly sure what they're going for here, and have mixed feelings. A few of the cuts, I enjoyed, but others, it's as if they're going for some shock value.
I ain't had a smiley pie in 15 years
This is one of those albums that I can respect and appreciate, but I don't think I can like it. It sounds like the unholy spawn of Nirvana, Black Sabbath, and The Residents. Black Sabbath right off the bat with Sweat Loaf, basically just turning Sabbath's Sweet Leaf into a noise rock song. Graveyard sounds like the noise bridge or breakdown to a weird Nirvana song like Milk It (My favorite Nirvana song by the way). Pretty sure U.S.S.A samples or recreates the looping machinery sound from Pink Floyd's Welcome to the Machine? At least, it sounded like that. Kuntz kinda sounds like a Middle Eastern/Indian tune fed through the context of a 60's psychedelic track. But mostly there's not an entire song I can sink my teeth into on this. I think it's really just Pittsburgh to Lebanon and Human Cannonball that are the only tracks resembling a fully formed song, not that they were trying with the other ones. Whereas the other ones run the gamut from a looping musical phrase or just noise rock jamming. But yeah. It's a fantastic album, definitely one to be respected for it's creativity, influence (On grunge and sludge), and boundary breaking; but in the context of this project, I can't really give it anything higher than a 2. It's not one I have much interest in going back to.
Stats really interesting but fades. Loud and noisy, I can see the appeal but it’s odd sounds and frankly distracting noises make it not a good liaten
62% Best: Human Cannonball Must-Hear? Nah. It's not as bad as others make it seem, but I would never listen to it again, nor recommend it to any (normal) person. I'll just stick with Pepper from the Surfers.
Some alright songs on it but most of them are just noisy and chaotic.
I mean this is representative of their music, but why not pick the album with Pepper on it? It was only their biggest hit by far and away. Otherwise, it's not like this album or group influenced anything except huffing paint in teenage delinquents.
I was previously familiar with Butthole Surfers for the song Pepper which is not on this album. This is a pretty far out there album. Parts of it are ok but other parts are borderline unlistenable. I would not listen again.
all downhill after “SATAN SATAN SATAN”
Really not sure how to rate this. Are they pioneering musicians or just a bunch of dicks making noise? Kuntz is bizarre bit also weirdly likeable. Definitely hear the foundations for grunge. But is this something I’d ever want to just put on to listen to? Sorry, but I think this is mostly just a bunch of moderately talented douchebags who were screwing around and got lucky here and there. Album is also incoherent in my view. Lot of interesting experimentation, but is there a vision? I guess I appreciate that they were pioneers, but seems accidental. Maybe that’s just punk. Not for me though.
Alright, let's get the obvious out of the way. This album may have the worst album/band name combo on the entire list. I can't tell people that I liked an album called Locust Abortion Technician by a band called Butthole Surfers! Fortunately, I don't have to! I don't vibe with this album very much. Admittedly, I can see the vision and I'd mostly chalk this up to just being something that's not up my alley. This definitely fits in that noise rock territory, with the emphasis on noise. A lot of this album does just feel like harsh noise to me, which I've never liked. It brings back memories of Einstürzende Neubauten and I don't like that. However, there are other moments and songs that I think are solid. I think the opener "Sweet Loaf" sounds cool, but that might be because the main riff is heavily based on Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf," leading to me thinking of a better band. I'd also go as far as to call "Human Cannonball" a good song. It's not my favorite thing ever, but I could see someone listening to this song legitimately and having a good time with it. However, I don't feel super positive about the album at large. The singing is kind of weird at best and nearly unlistenable at worst, the writing is off-putting and not always in a good way, though I'd argue it occasionally is, and the sound isn't usually good. Still, I can see why others might enjoy this and even a since of influence that this has had on music since its release in 1987. I mean, Kurt Cobain liked it, so clearly it's not horrible, right? Still, I can't say I'm a fan, but I'm also not upset that I listened to this. High 2/5.
I respect this more than I like this if that makes any sense.
not for me
Wasn't sure what I was getting into with this one and kept listening to see what would happen next. It wasn't particularly good or enjoyable but at least unique. Won't revisit
Like the name of the band, the album is pretty shitty, but a little cool.
I appreciate the experiment. I also appreciate it being over.
Only 2 semi decent songs, the rest can get destroyed
2/5
A challenging listen, to be sure - but that’s the point, right?! Certainly one that needs to be heard - but only in the right frame of mind, whatever that may be! Good, but not great.
This isn’t bad per se but it feels like an inside joke that I’m not a part of.
I had a feeling that an album by a band named “Butthole Surfers” would be weird and I was right. Did I enjoy that weirdness? More than I thought but I probably wouldn’t listen to it again.
Didn’t like this at all
1.5 I’m all for experimentation but this all seemed like extremely shallow experimentation. Stuff that was done better by Zappa or Beefheart 30 years before. It’s intentionally unlistenable, and I ask - Why? The few moments they choose to make actual music, it’s honestly pretty good!
an album that is actually about 2 songs and 8 b-sides. mostly fucking about in the studio- yeilding inconsistent results- Gabby doesn't sing a clear vocal until the sixth track, and barely pops his head up again after that. Even with the loose standards for inclusion, they could only get 31 minutes together? Anyway- band has a decent sound here, no 1980s fuckery to be found, but they aren't doing much with it on this EP of an LP.
not for me
I didn’t hate this but I doubt I will come back to it.
If grunge punk is your thing then it’s probably good
This album is truly an experience, but the jury is still out on if it's a welcome one or not.
★★½
Many of these experimental/noise rock albums from this list have been missing me entirely and failing to reach me in any profound way. I kept waiting for this album to give me one of those moments, but it was largely an unnerving listen. Instrumentation was fine for the most part, I can appreciate some of the guitar playing here. But those sorts of tracks would be sandwiched in between some of the most abrasive stuff I've ever heard.
Impressively makes 95% of songs on an 11 song 32min album somehow feel too long. I can respect that they're doing uh.. something but it ain't for me and this might not be it
I was expecting more of a punk style album and it wasn’t that - more noise/experimental rock so maybe I’m knocking it down too much. Well probably not since neither of those genres are what I like. I did like somewhat was "Pittsburgh to Lebanon", "Human Cannonball" and "Kuntz".
I can finally put a full-length album with the name. Giving this one star feels like what they want, so I'm going to give it two.
I respect the experimentation and willingness to try something completely new. As a listening experience though, I can't say I found it very enjoyable. Sometimes noise...is just noise.
Pigfuck 😩 “it’s aight” - Ryan
Partly nice and partly really annoying. I can't make up my mind how I really feel about this album but for notable time I was somehow bothered / annoyed etc that I can't give more than two stars. Hard to point the reason why this just didn't entertained me more.
No idea how this was deemed good enough to get on this list but I will give it an extra star for being so bad in places it made me laugh.
Human cannonball is the obvious standout track with the rest a bit of a tough listen. Some promising riffs but the deliberate attempt to make the music inaccessible make it difficult to appreciate it on a few listens.
I didn't really enjoy this, but Kuntz made me laugh. 2 stars.
NOPE. This was an auditory assault that I did not enjoy. Not my jam at all. If you dig Frank Zappa, you'll probably all over this.
Cool album cover. Captures the mania of the album
I like some Butthole Surfers but not this particularly. I can do a certain level of weird as long as it's hanging on songs and some of this didn't hit that mark. Human Cannonball was good
I like punk/hardcore, but this dont make sense!
I liked the opening track, although it does go on a little long. There were some songs that were a bit too experimental ("The O-Men"), and some that were just dumb (looking at you, "Kuntz"). But I did like songs like "Human Cannonball," and "22 (Going on 23)" would have worked but it was too long. I just can't recommend the album because some of the stuff is just too weird or dumb, and some of the songs went on too long.
album could have been called what the hell are we listening to. could i write poetry to this? n
Man vill ju gilla Butthole Surfers. Kul namn, snyggt album. Men nja.
Wow! “Interesting” to say the least! Definitely one to play through the headphones or when my partners out! Didn’t like it or did I? Very confused by it to be honest. Erm, are they songs who can tell!
lmao
The Butthole Surfers I know were the weirdos in the mid-90s when I was high school. They were weird in a fun way. This is just kind of annoyingly weird. Has it's moments but not enough to make me like it
interesting ideas but pretty poor execution on most of them. felt like they couldnt stick to a bit so everything is all over the place in the worst of ways
Did not care for this one much at all. Kuntz was the best song among a bunch of duds
Before today's album, the only Butthole Surfers song I knew was Pepper, which is a solid song. This album was 95% noisey garbage with "Human Cannonball" stuck in the middle. Human Cannonball is a really solid track, the rest of the album is largely unlistenable. Fuck I hate noise rock. If you have no talent, don't waste my time. Favorite songs: Human Cannonball, 22 Going On 23, Kuntz Least favorite songs: The O-Men, U.S.S.A., Graveyard, Pittsburgh to Lebanon, Weber, Hay 2/5
Sick ass name but wtf was that
< the Beatles I like the butthole surfers... Just not this album
Not my favorite album, however I can appreciate the strangeness and the way that every song on the album is completely different than the last. I do enjoy graveyard pt 2 and 22 going on 23. This album reminds me of white zombies gods on voodoo moon and sonic youths walls have ears, although I enjoy those albums much more.
Groupe totalement inconnu. =>2/5
I mean, not great, Bob! But not the utter worst thing I've ever heard. At least its not all the same.
The production is cool but not a fan of the music itself
Just not good! Not even interestingly bad
Creative and innovative but noise really.
This album had few and far between glimpses of potential, but mostly sounded like random noise to me
Not good
This is exactly how I thought an album called "Locust Abortion Technician" by a band called Butthole Surfers would sound like. A bit obtuse and challenging but it sure was interesting! Leagues better than anything br*tish on this list.
really disappointed. butthole surfers is such a good name. gotta give this a 2, low 2 teetering on 1
Not quite pencil in the ear level but I was not impressed
well, it finally happened. this isn't the worst album on here and i'm not about to act like it is, but let's just say it's not my favorite. there's a staggering breadth of... stuff happening on here. i don't like most of it, but i have to respect that they went for it. they're also from my alma mater, so......? *weak fistbump to the sky*
This was something for sure.
Hated it.
About on par for what I'd expect to be coming out of a butthole.
It's not as bad as some things we've heard but not good by any means. Some songs have a melody, which is better than nothing
Already the band name is a 2 or lower, they’d have to work hard to overcome the aversive association. They didn’t work hard enough.
Slechte versie van roadkill
Interesting
Awful!
This album wasn't nearly as bad as what I anticipated. But then, twice nothing is still nothing. Good luck slogging through this mess.
Pretty fucking ass
Standing where this album is in the musical landscape I can almost see things I like in the distance. I do think this chaos has a place on this list. Can't say I enjoyed listening but there is something here.
Not for me. I think it’s probably some forward concept album, but more noise rock than I was expecting.
There are parts that were interesting. And then there was a lot of noise. Like, a lot. This is the record that is playing in some weird, sparsely populated room in the back of the club. Or in a torture dungeon.
Could use a little more melody with the noise. 2.5
much of this album just sounded like chaotic noise to me. nonsensical lyrics and often indecipherable vocals. on most of the songs it sounds like the band members are just learning how to play their instruments. the butthole surfers have been around for a long time, so i know there have to be better albums than this. hell, i have heard a few of their songs on the radio and they sounded great, but i was pretty disappointed with this album.
I found this album rather weak except in a few isolated moments. I appreciate weird but this just doesn't work for me.
Meh
For being the Butthole Surfers, and being avant garde noise rock, this is surprisingly ok. Not my favorite genre, but it wasn’t unlistenable. I do like a handful of their songs, but in general their stuff is a little out there for me. But this wasn’t terrible. I don’t know that I would go back to it… but it was ok.
Maybe I’m thinking of someone else, but I remember these guys being a lot better.
I’ve never heard of this album before. I started listening around independent worm saloon and electric Larry land. This is wild so far.
Too far down the 'noises' path
[3/10] An upsetting listen!! I appreciate the rawness and spectacle of it all but I will not return to this.
Nah
The song U.S.S.A sounds like dogs and cows being tortured. The song O-men sounds afwul. Like it is so weird. It is almost just like noise, if there wasn't the drums and bass in the background. Like I think I would have liked the album, if they have chosen to use less noise.
Get a grip
The Butthole Surfers (fantastic name) made an album that I would call.. weird? The first track was pretty good but I felt it kinda just fell off from there. I hate to give ANOTHER album a two but it wasn't my thing.
Back to the cheap shock value schlock, I see. Yeah that's really what this felt like. I mean, the title (of the band and the album) alone is definitely meant to rile some people up in the cheapest way possible. And I'm sure that's all part of the point on the band's part, but it doesn't come across as particularly clever or interesting. There's some stuff to like here, but man is it all overshadowed by the stuff that's just obnoxious and painful to listen to. I mean, some of the riffs are amazing ("Sweat Loaf," among them) but I just really didn't care for pretty much any other part of this. I'd love an explanation of this one's inclusion. What does this bring to the table that is so unique, so special, so artistically magnificent that it deserves inclusion here? I'd love to know. Two stars. It really wasn't THAT bad, I just never want to listen to it again. Standout Tracks: Sweat Loaf, Human Cannonball
Bleh
Music inspired by the sounds of construction, what a choice. Sweat Loaf had a pretty sweet riff, though.
i kinda get it? like it isn't the worst thing I've ever heard, but i also don't see myself revisiting it
Not completely terrible, but I don't think I'll listen to it ever again.
Wow! it is not my cup of tea at all. I can see why someone might like it. If you are angry and need music to match that mood, this would certainly do it. It just doesn’t feel very musical to me.
Not sure what’s going on here. Feels Ween adjacent but I enjoy ween more? Not vibing with this at all.
228/1001 No había escuchado a esta banda en mi vida 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
11/19/24. I know the Butthole Surfers are influential to a lot of bands I follow, but this one didn't do it for me. Thought it was noisy and a little all over the place, but not bad. Perhaps not my cup of tea.
There are a couple of good moments here, notably “Human Cannonball,” but the rest is so experimental there’s nothing there to really listen to.
This sucked. Like it was bad. At one point it just felt like noise, not music
Definitely notable for being this weird and intense in 1987, but I think looking at it with a modern lens it definitely feels a bit juvenile at points. I'm all for weird experimental music, but so much of this feels weird just to be weird without trying to also be good.
1,5
I with the kids at school that likes butthole surfers, and I have to admit I was always curious but never checked out the van. Now I realize it wouldn’t have been for me anyway. I suspect that the name of the band had a lot to do with it’s cult popularity popularity
I guess I could’ve like it at some point in my youth. I don’t now tho.
This is pretty shouty, noisy, wild and I'm not sure I would say essential?
I just don’t like it.
Not the greatest of albums but I guess had a place in the movement that had stronger bands like Pixies
This is one of those ones I was looking forward to and it ended up being a big disappointment. I was enjoying it til about half way through and when it ended, the idea of listening to it again made me immediately made me feel uneasy. It's possible that it's because the last track is a steaming pile of shite.
Not really my favorite genre. Stopped listening.
Not really for me
This was very close to being my first 1 star review, but there was just enough decent stuff on the last few songs to push it to 2 stars. I'm not exactly sure what they were going for. The whole record is weird, but is it weird just for the sake of being weird? I get that Sweet Loaf is a parody? of Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath. Are the rest of the songs supposed to be parodies? Wtf is going on
This album is a messy swirl of noise, distortion, and chaos. It feels like early Sonic Youth but without the artful restraint, leaning instead into the absurd. The songs are jagged and abrasive, like they're testing your tolerance more than anything. There's a rough, almost primal energy here, but it’s hard to find a thread that pulls you through it. If you’re into bands that thrive on discomfort, you might appreciate it. Otherwise, it’s more likely to leave you feeling lost in the noise.
6/10 Highlights: Pittsburgh to Lebanon Human Cannonball
Locust Abortion Technician is the third album from the Butthole Surfers, the most infamously named band in modern music. The band makes art-rock, or noise-rock. Theirs is a style of psychedelia that sounds like it should come from Texas (and, it does...). The Butthole Surfers tour constantly, and their performances are intentionally provocative. Like their name, the aim is the production of outrage. Their music is not pleasant, and it doesn't try to be. The band makes experimental punk, and at times, they show they are capable of melodic playing. Unfortunately, they were more interested in shocking than entertaining.
Haven’t listened to this since high school. Plenty worse things on the list. That being said, this one probably didn’t collect many gold gramophones or silver spacemen.
Odd. A couple of ok songs otherwise just a lot of noise
Yeah it's pretty bad
I mean, it was as weird as the name suggested. Not my kind of weird though.
Another good album to listen to on long road trips
You have to be in the right mood to want to hear this, and I don’t think I was. Still, I appreciate their audacity.
It’s alright liked graveyard
Thai song saves this one
Hmmm not for me. I will give it a 2 because i think it did have some sort of point to it, I just haven’t understood it.
"Lost Abortion Technician" is the third full length studio album by American rock band Butthole Surfers. The music is described as an experimental blend of punk rock, heavy metal and pyschedelia which employs elements of world beat rhythm, noise rock, progressive guitar and folk music. They could have just said noise rock and random weird stuff. The album was self-produced and recorded with an old 8-track tape machine in asmall rented house in Winterville, GA. The Butthole Surfers are Gibby Haynes ( lead vocals), Paul Leary (guitar), Jeff Pinkus (bass), King Coffey (drums) and Teresa Nervosa (drums). The album was critically well-received and, commercially, it hit #3 on the UK indie charts. The album opens with long silence and slow orchestrated music in "Sweet Leaf." A father and son are talking and ends with the father telling the kid to yell "Satan, Satan" at his Mom. The song then kicks into a warped guitar riff parodying Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf." The first semblance of a normal song comes six songs in with "Human Cannonball." It's bass forward with a hypnotic beat. The guitar initially sounds like a siren and kicks in with some feedback. This song does rock and reminded me of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Another decent song is the parody of speed metal in "The O-Man." It's weird, pounding speed metal. Gabby is singing like a cartoon character. This album ends just as bizarrely as it started. "22 Going 23" starts with a woman calling into a radio show and talking about getting sexually assaulted. Distorted guitar. A plodding bass. Idiosyncratic drums. The song now ends appropriately with cow's mooing. Of, course. The vocals and music can best be described as creepy, weird, demented and disturbing. I guess when I read that the band said that one of the benefits of recording in their own house was that they could take extended drug breaks that I shouldn't be surprised with what i heard. Well, mission accomplished in translating your drugs into mostly noncomprehensible music. There are areas where I appreciated the experimentalism and rock music but mostly I just heard "Hey, I'm weird and look what I'm doing and saying." After awhile, I had enough of this album even though it's only 32-minutes long. If you're on a self abusing musical bender, after listening to Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" put this album on and you'll realize things can get worse.
Really not easy to digest. A bit too wild/weird for me although I´m into grunge/rock. A few more tracks like "Human Cannonball" or "Graveyard Pt. 2" would please me. Weak two stars for this. 1,5
Pro tip: if you were listening on Spotify, the remastered version is one minute shorter.
This....wasn't as bad as it could have been. There were parts that were actually enjoyable. Ruined by the awful screetching noises in spots, but better than most of a similar genre. 5/10 (2.5/5)
It's weird, and oppressive, and murky, and very noisy. I'm not really sure what they're going for here. There's not really that many succinct, actual songs. It all kind of bleeds into one loud mess. Weird.
Utter crap! Discordant, not really music but noise - not impressed at all
It had flashes of something entertaining, but not enough.
I saw my mom yesterday after listening to this and told her “Satan” and now I’m grounded and not allowed to listen to The Butthole Surfers anymore. I’m OK with that.
Ok, what actually is this? Are these even considered "songs"? When would someone play this? Maybe a high school kid trying to piss off their parents, I'm not sure. I'll give them props for the sheer diversity: prominent feature of barnyard sounds, some crickets, squeak toys, Iron Man's voice, clowns laughing. But it's too weird and unsettling for me. Half the time it sounds like you're playing a tape backwards, the other half is somehow even weirder. It's wild and very avant-garde, but not in a good way. It's like bad drug trip that won't end, this is the sound of your nightmares. This is puking and shitting at the same time. Pure chaos but somehow not as bad as some others on the list.
This is obviously weird. There's glimpses of bits I enjoyed. But too much weird for me. I am too dumb. Good on you thought the butthole boys
3/10 I can't lie, I like the Butthole Surfers I've heard before this album. this is...a thing. I may just not be in the mood for free form noise. 7-16-2024
Not a massive fan.
Well that was not to my liking
A couple of tracks were ok but really just mostly a lot of weird obscure stuff.
Not as bad as I thought it would be. But don’t see me coming back to it. Ever.
I don't dig it
Daddy? Yes, son. What does regret mean? Well son, the funny thing about regret is that it's better to regret Something you have done than To Regret something that you haven't done And by the way, If you see your mom this weekend, will you be sure and Tell her... SATAN SATAN SATAN!!!! I regret listening to this album
Senseless noise.
Ehh
I did not like this. But also not in the mood, so, 2 stars. Seems childish and obnoxious.

Exactly how I'd imagine the sound of people who surf buttholes to make. Performance: 3 Production: 3 Composition: 2 Fav track: Kuntz
I like the later, sillier Butthole Surfers a lot more than this album. 2/5
Don’t really ever want to hear that again. Two stars because of inventiveness
Sweat Loaf 2.7 Graveyard 2.5 Pittsburgh to Lebanon 2.3 Weber 2 HAY 1.8 Human Cannonball 2.8 U.S.S.A. 1.5 The O-Men 1.6 Kuntz 2 Graveyard (Pt 2) 2.7 22 Going on 23 2.8 Score: 2.245454545
like, it's experimental, but i don't think in a very interesting, engaging, or listenable way. 2.5/5
Was going to give it a strong 1. But it's too good for that.
Ehhh.
Except for some tasty guitar work here and there, I can’t do this.
Yay drugs?
Not my speed.
Some cool industrial noises used throughout to create some arresting rhythms but the grating vocals were off-putting. Except on The O-Men; that one drew me in.
A lot of noise, but I get what they were going for. Unfortunately it was mostly annoying to me.
It was awful. Really awful.
Solid “should be on this list.” But so very strange. There’s so much more that’s this weird and borderline offensive, but actually better (e.g. Fantomas)
Experimental loud noisiness. I love a bit of punk but this was too much for me. There were a few bits I likes, some social commentary and a few more interesting songs, but on balance, not an experience I would want to have again.
It’s something.
An interesting album. Going from noise to something melodic and quite humorous too, buy maybe that's just me. I listened until the end because I found the whole thing intriguing but overall its not my thing. Creatively put together though so for that alone it's not a bad listening experience. Having said that don't think I be listening again though.
A couple of these songs are actually pretty decent - I liked Sweat Loaf and Graveyard pt 2, for example. Some if the others are fairly hard going though, like The O-men. This is a two, but it's on the upper end of it - I was quite tempted to score as a three.
noise rock is still just noise. there are some solid rock patterns in here but the nondescription makes it mostly pretty forgettable. the only thing that people will recall is that it is entirely insane
Couple good songs. Did I need to listen to the whole album? No.
I don’t dislike it all that much but it does nothing for me. I’m glad it was at least interesting and not boring
I only know the song Pepper and I love that song so I’m excited for this. Sweat Loaf starts off absolutely unhinged. This song is insane but in a good way. Graveyard is also unhinged in a less pleasant way. Noise! That Pittsburgh to Lebanon song sounded like Tom Waits. Feel like I’m hearing him everywhere and not a fan. This is spiraling out of control very quickly I don’t like it. I was excited after the first song and everything went downhill. This is just barely a 2.
Trying way too hard just didnt get it i typically like the butthole surfers but this aint it
favourite: the o-men, kuntz, 22 going on 23 least favourite: graveyard, pittsburg to lebanon, weber, hay, u.s.s.a "how can we make our album as uncomfortable as possible" sonically, it's impressive. they can make some super cool noises & the atmosphere is 100% there the vocals on the o-men & kuntz work really well, kuntz especially has a great instrumental human cannonball stands out weirdly, doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album. otherwise, this is actually unlistenable hard to say it's "bad", they're obviously extremely talented. not for me, but I see why someone might like this mayb 5/10
There are a couple of good songs in here, but most of it veers into annoying weird instead of interesting weird
I tried to get into it, but by the time the album got to U.S.S.A. I realized that it kinda sucked. Sure, when I listen to music I like to have some noise. But I don't like NOIISEEEE@!!$??!.
Nah...
I had always heard of the Butthole Surfers but never gave them a listen so this is the first time I’m listening to them. They’re usually discussed within the same sphere of influential grunge bands like the Pixies. This was not what I was expecting. It’s more noise/experimental. I can hear traces of grunge in some of the songs, such as Graveyard which kinda sounds like “Come as You Are” to me.
Hard choice between a 1/5 and a 2/5 for me because it REALLY sucked but I could understand how some people could enjoy it.
Well, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. There are dreadful bits, there's the odd passable bit, and then there's Human Cannonball, which is a great little punk song. 2/5, would not recommend anyone listen to anything other than the single.
I did not enjoy this.
Want to like this much more than I did
Definitely different, but I would say it would be a mercy to receive 3 stars. it was 2-fer
This isn’t it. Honesty couldn’t wait for this album to end.
Human Cannonball and 22 Going on 23 are the only good songs. Cute dog. FUCK clowns. 2.5
Not my favorite one of their albums
It wasn’t all torture, but I was sure glad when it ended.
I tried listening to the Butthole Surfers back in college but didn’t enjoy them then. It’s pretty much the same story some 35 years later. I felt like I was sitting in some talented young guys’ basement listening to their band screw around and wondering when they were going to finish. I didn’t get a lot out of the songs except maybe a few moments of vague amusement even though they were talented on their instruments. I never got Butthole Surfers’ music. Clearly I’m missing something because a lot of folks disagree.
