- drumming really interesting - adds more than just a sense of direction to the piece, truly driving - the drums in Space Truckin' are just beautiful...probably my favourite song on the album - story behind Smoke on the Water (and the history of the whole recording of the album) very interesting From Wikipedia: As previous recording sessions had been slotted into the group's gigging schedule, Deep Purple wanted to dedicate time to record an album away from the typical studio environment, hoping it would result in a sound closer to their live shows. They hired the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio for recording, and block-booked the Montreux Casino as a venue, but during a Frank Zappa concert immediately before the sessions, the casino burned to the ground. After a week of searching for an alternative venue, including a session at a nearby theatre that was abandoned due to noise complaints, the band managed to book the Grand Hotel, closed for the winter, and converted it into a live room suitable for recording. These events, particularly the casino fire, became the inspiration for the song "Smoke on the Water".

Some absolutely huge choruses. Impressive how the final track, Champagne Supernova manages to be 7 minutes long and still a classic and have you singing along throughout.
Some of the tracks with vocals provided more interest, but I was less convinced by the purely instrumental tracks, on the whole.
Some brilliant songs - I can't stand the rain and Help! where both a really pleasant listening experience. However, some like When I was young rely too much on the vocal efforts of Tina Turner to maintain any musical interest as the song develops. She does extremely well, but the song itself is rather dull after one listen. When listened to in one go, the album is a rather intense listening experience due to the nature of Tina Turner's vocals - she is not a voice to be ignored in the background.
It is quite impressive the depth that Pink Floyd manage to achieve within this album. The solo melodic lines are pretty much the definition of epic. I do question some of the lyrics - they seem rather banal and trite, but perhaps I am missing the point of them. Some times though, when the context of the album is understood, they are more pertinent and even witty e.g. 'Oh by why the way which one's pink'. What an amazing tribute - an album to their ex-band member. They manage to write long songs that maintain the interest throughout - never are you stuck in exposure to pointless repetitions for the sake of it - the solo lines and the accompanying instrumentation have you hanging on their every note. Very good stuff.
Radiohead really divides me. I appreciate them to some extent on an intellectual level, but from a pure enjoyment perspective they often miss the mark for me. This album was the same.
The title track is brilliant, but it was the other tracks on the album which I really enjoyed. The bass line in particular cut through the texture and provided a funky accompaniment to the vocal melodies.
The Message stands out in this album - though I couldn't really see the point behind the 7 minute instrumental version. However, it was the more mellow offering 'You Are' that was the song I kept on repeat once I had got to the end of the album.
This album disappointed me. Some tracks offered promise - Fight Test, Are you a Hypnotist? And Do you realise? These I would choose to listen to again. But on the whole, the album was a let down. I wonder if familiarity might improve the score, but the album taken as a whole didn't provide me with enough to draw me in to listen to it again and again.
From reading, the production quality is what this album is on the list for, but the instrument solos are just exquisite. The drums are so crisp, even through my poor quality headphones, it felt like they were in the room. Good stuff.
This filled an interesting space in that it is both easy-ish listening to have on in the background, and is also interesting enough musically to focus on in isolation.
This album was just really angry. Really didn't understand it or enjoy it at all.
Such a powerful voice. It's the voice alone that gets the album this rating, in my view.
Just brilliant song after brilliant song.
Classic Elvis. Very good stuff.
