Reviews (page 10 of 13)

Alright. I've liked a few but I'm not a huge fan.

Not my favorite but still has some classics on it.

Fun punk

I bought Americana in 6th grade in 1998. This album is definitely more punk thank Americana and has some of the classic songs we all know and love. Very nostalgic for anyone who grew up in that era, but maybe wouldn't vibe with people hearing it for the first time these days.

good album, but my favourites were definitely the ones I already knew before (the singles)

Loud & I didn’t have to think

Classic american punk rock. Few stand out tracks, other than come out and play (awesome twangy guitar, energetic hey-ey s and it effectly uses very breif moments where there is not sound). Genocide felt very repetitive and the drums were offputting, not fitting with the guitar. The vocals in self esteem were not very tuneful at the beginning but better towards the midde of the song. I cant decide whether what happened to you doesnt fit or just mixes it up. In isolation the song is alright. I love the signing on and off; it makes the listener feel much more connected to the band.

Doesn’t really work as an album. I think too many of the songs sound too much alike but any one of these songs goes hard in a playlist so 3/5 for that at least.

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: yeah, was decent Favourite song: Track 8 - Self Esteem

Some of this is a rough listen. I'm glad to have moved beyond youthful anger.

Good music, lyrics are aged and cringe.

Very energetic and fun, the drums carry the intense pace. Singing, harmonies and use of guitars makes them pop, although a bit raw.

The "sad punk" vibe gets a little tiring - the mood is a little drab and rainy despite the speed. Probably because of Dexter's vocal style and the minor keys. Gets kinda monotonous as the album goes on.

funny pero i have outgrown this

Two really good songs

Good coypl3 of tunes reminds me of being younger but overall pretty bland and the guys voicr is kinda annoying.

They just kind of troweled on the angst and anger without much finesse. Somehow it sounds both raw and contrived to me. Come and Play is a undeniable banger. The rest I could do without.

Most for the nostalgia: pseudo-angry pop-punk, moshing at late night 90s rock clubs, Crazy Taxi and Tony Hawks Pro Skater.

Im surprised by the quality of the riffs. Didnt expect that. Kinda heavy/thrashy sometimes.

I grew up listening to this album and at no point would I have felt the need to tell another person "You have to hear the Offspring album with Self Esteem on it." I find it odd this album is on the list, because I am not sure the impact this album had. Maybe it had a bigger impact on the West Coast than for me on the East Coast. It's really a good album, but is not a "must-listen." Plus, "Gotta Get Away" only reminds me of "Territorial Pissings" by Nirvana. I want to say they kind of ripped off the chorus of "Territorial Pissings," but that's probably not correct.

It's exactly what you'd expect from an Offspring record. Juvenile ideas executed with infectious energy. Don't get me wrong, even though the subject matter tends to be adolescent, the wordplay is pretty clever and there are some real bangers here. It's really hard to argue against "Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem". They slap. Do they slap hard enough to carry a whole album? Not even remotely. But they ARE fun tracks. The biggest problem with the album is that it's 45 minutes long. That's long enough for the schtick to get old, the pace to get exhausting, and the immature songwriting to get obnoxious. I was on track to give this a solid 4-star review somewhere around "Self Esteem" but the whole vibe of the thing outstayed its welcome by the time I hit the end of "Smash".

decent song

Nice album. Nothing more and nothing less

Machine gun, rattling 3 minute stompers. Some poignant, cutting sharp lyrics, mixed in with banal drivel. Did i enjoy it... Yes... Was it great.. No. Incosistent, a bit repetetive and no real flair... But madly i liked it.

Oh gosh, the hardest part of this list is the bland 70s rock and bland 90s rock. I enjoyed the radio hits that came off this album when it came out, but the album as a whole does little for me. It starts to feel really same/same after a while and I sort of suffered through it. 3/5 for the two decent hits, surrounded by bland grinding grunge.

The Offspring were in the right place at the right time. They pretty much perfected skate punk commercially and are instantly recognizable. 13 year old me was absolutely hyped to have this to listen to growing up.

I was never a big fan of bands like Offspring or Green Day. They're called punk but I feel like they are sort of a pop-version of punk. It's okay, it has a lot of energy, but I just don't love it. 3 stars.

Favourites: • Genocide • Come Out and Play • Self Esteem

Kind of a nostalgia listen, which makes up for a lot, considering this is actually kind of a lame punk record. Those crunchy guitars and simple songwriting aren’t much that would bring me back over and over, and it’s funny to compare this to a lot of other groundbreaking alt-rock from the mid 90s. But it’s still so much fun. Can picture my older brother playing some of these songs to a smaller sized me with Oakley sunglasses, spiked hair, and a Hawaiian shirt. Three and a half. Fave track: Come Out and Play

Bad Habit, Come Out and Play and Self Esteem are the best songs. Average other songs.

ermm, ok... most of the songs are good, in my opinion, but there's so little variety on this album and all of the songs sound pretty much the same to me. they blend together.

This makes me feel like I should be playing Crazy Taxi. It also makes me realize I really only care about this music while playing Crazy Taxi.

More of a 2.5 but rounding up because nostalgia

It's edgy, it's fun, it has spoken meta-interludes and a hidden track. Doesn't get more 90s than this.

They got better with time. This showed some promise and had plenty of energy in a way I like, but it got a bit samey by the end

I'm not mad at this: seemed like a solid rock punk record and from what I can tell definitely has it's cult following. Didn't jump to me as smth I would listen to again and again but I can give myself with time (or a viral tiktok sound) coming to really like or even love this album.

The singles are really good but the rest of the album is loud punk, which is not my style

The energy in this album was very much appreciated on my Friday morning walk to work. I think I’m probably missing out on some zeitgeisty element of the Offspring by not listening to a rip off of Napster and smoking skunk weed in a basement, but I’ve got a good enough imagination to see the appeal. You can definitely tell a lot of bands afterwards were heavily influenced by these guys’ sound. The bangers are bangers but 3 stars still feels appropriate when the name of the game is greatest albums of all time

Fun, nice energy. Got me enthusiastic, but eventually the Offspring is a one trick pony.

It's ok

Certainly one of the albums

A politically conscious pop punk album with more pop than punk. Much better than the other limited selection of pop punk albums I’ve heard across my life.

real, energy and fun

Not a fan, but I can get into it I’m some moods.

The idea of listening to this band after hearing 'Cruising California' makes me cringe. However, this album is a different ball game, Self Asteem, Keep 'em Separated and What Happened to you are the standouts. The drumming is excellent and very tight, but at times quite repetitive, backing vocals are a big highlight. Overall about as solid a 3 as you can get

Very of it's time. Consistent. Angsty. Strong middle. Secret tracks are, and always have been, stupid.

There’s some good songs for sure, but it’s not really my thing.

It was okay.

Not a bad post-punk sound.

Until I listened to this I would have said that I'd only heard the radio-played songs off this. As it turns out almost all of them sound familiar and I even seem to know the lyrics to about half. I definitely never owned this album as a child so I think my brother must have, and played it often enough to permeate my consciousness. The good songs are still good, and individually I think they're all decent, but the thrashy energy gets tiring at length.

It was interesting, but I still prefer later albums

Solid 3... these dudes yelling at me just didn't really resonate. clearly influenced the genre. can hear their sound utilized in Green Day, Weezer, arctic monkeys etc...

I used to really like this band and it was still enjoyable, but the songs I hadn't heard didn't really grab me.

Not a genre I usually enjoy, but this was alright

The Offspring is one of those bands I've managed to avoid listing to (on purpose), though it's hard to avoid, "Come Out And Play", which seems to appear everywhere. Actually, I don't mind that song, though too much of anything is tiring and separated. I've considered them one of those bands that help take punk rock (along with...Green Day) to the mainstream, well at least pop-punk and is the ideal band for newbies of the genre. Inoffensive, but edgy enough to spike your hair and get multiple tattoos on your face to make your parents nervous. The music is fine, but nothing that hasn't been done before and there are a lot more less popular bands that do it better and are less annoying.

come out and play en self esteem zijn classics, de rest is maar matig. Americana is stukken beter imo

één gigantische schijf de rest vrij mid

BL: Forgot to write a BL - but I am aware of the offspring and used to be a big fan of them when I was 12-14 AL: pretty good album, a lot more variety than I expected. The guitar parts were good but tbh the other instrument parts weren’t massively noticeable. Lyrics were typical 90s teen angst but “Self-Esteem” is still a banger FT: “Self Esteem”, “Genocide”, “What Happened to You?” 3/5

Liked this album, but prefer Americana tbh

I'd give this a high 3 star rating. Self-esteem is a real banger, but I didn't really get with the rest that much, even though the music style fits me well. This is why it's not a 4.

I think my first ever album i bought was Americana by The Offspring. This is a few albums earlier and it still have some hits. I loved the songs I've heard before while the others were so-so. Come out and play (keep 'em seperated) will forever be molten giants trash in MC for me.

Punkrock, faktisk helt okay, energisk

not my style

Chillled outttt…..

Some nice melodic hardcore. I can see why this sold a gajillion bajillion copies. Not my preferred flavour of punk, though

classic punk from the 90's. Pretty good.

I didn't love it. Annoying because it's almost good like that other album. The one that hasn't made this list

Generally enjoyable

Not the best offspring album but still good fun

It seems a bit stuck in the 90' as of this moment in time.

I remember how big this album was when it came out. The album cover was so cool, their sound was different (annoying, but in a good way), it was fun to sing along to. The intro to Come Out and Play was one of the first things I taught myself on my first drum set. I think like half of these songs made their way to the airwaves. Nostalgia aside, it's okay. Come Out and Play and Self Esteem still hold up, but the rest of the tracks lack the dynamics that these two songs have. Most of the rest of the album is just Noodle screaming and it wears on me a little now.

Klassischer 90s Skate/Poppunk.

Lots of classic Offspring on this album, but boy this album really wears your ears out listening to it start to finish. This might be the first album we've listened to that has a "secret" track at the end of the last track on the album which is definitely a relic of the medium, but it's got a fun little play on the riff from Come out and Play. * Bad Habit * Gotta Get Away * Genocide * Come out and Play * Self Esteem

Very unremarkable 90s alternative.

i’ve been very underwhelmed with this type of album recently. not really sure why it made the list, i feel basically nothing about it

Some classic rock band nonsense

First listen this probably started out as a 4 but as I tried to get to the end of the album I lost interest and everything started blending into one track. Loads of energy and a fair amount of invention and skill but just not the genre for me.

Quite a fun punk recording, especially at the beginning: Fundamentally solid stuff. Then a stretch of narrative, then experimentation cut short. Cut short with a waste of potentially interesting runtime.

I was pleasantly surprised for the most part. Liked their energy and sound but it was repetitive.

So many memories that this album brings up. I'd give a 3.5. A fun album and notable for it's impact in the mid 90s, but far from great/a masterpiece.

I could never get past the dudes voice. Lyrically decent and humorous but a little too on the nose for some songs. Not a fan of the garage band instrumentation.

Interesting that this is on the list. I listened to this a lot when I was younger, but I don’t think it’s that fantastic. 3.5 stars when I first heard it in my youth and when I listened again today.

A little silly. I like "Come Out and Play," but it definitely feels like a riff on "Love Buzz" by Nirvana (and whoever did that song originally).

It was fine.

Decent. But samey.

There’s the kernel of something good here - can see what it’s influenced by, and possibly what it influences in turn.

bah... 3

first listen like the energy but didn't interest me

Extremely fun, even though I can't quite get into this the same way I did when I was 12.

3.2 - I like hearing "Self Esteem" on the radio once in a while but the rest of this album is mediocre - nasally vocals, loud power chords, sophomoric lyrics.

It's alright, pretty decent energy but a lot of the songs ended up kind of too same-y for me, but the songs I liked were really damn great. I also enjoyed 8 minutes of dead air on the last track, that was a cool waste of time!

It's pretty good, a lot f fun tbh

Fresh and energetic when it came out.. dated today

Love “Self-Esteem”

I don't think I have ever listened to an entire Offspring album before and I really have no desire to listen to an entire one again. This album had a couple of songs that are very well known and songs that I will probably listen to again, but I have no desire to listen to the album again. Thankfully it is relatively short. It is not a 3 but I will round up mainly because of the well.known songs.

Blegh. I don't really like the offspring. I think it's the guys voice. They're very close to things that I do like, but there's something I can't get on board with.

Super energetic songs all the way through, and even though there feels like a lot of repetition of the general sound, there were a number of points where the feel changed and you just got a sense that the band was having fun. Three tracks are notable gems that I still love hearing after all these years. The rest was fun but I don’t need to hear this entire album again.

Fun and a great paced album. It was a great Friday pump up.

A pretty solid, fun listen although I confess I am not always the biggest fan of Dexter's vocals. Loved the little spoken snippets! The Offspring doesn't take itself too seriously which I see as a very refreshing trait. Genocide and Come Out And Play were the highlights for me (I actually don't like Self Esteem that much...). The rest of the album does feel a bit forgetful apart from those tracks.

67/100: Another group I’ve never heard of before. They definitely had a fun time making this album, or at least it sounds like they did, and that’s always something I appreciate—so props to them. With that being said “fun” only Carrie’s an album so far. The lead singer is having a great time delivering each line, I love that about this album. But therein also lies the principle fault I’ve found in this album. Every single line is delivered with the same excited energy. A song doesn’t become energetic by constantly being energetic. This album is an argument against plugging yourself into an “experience machine.” Let me explain. Things feel good because they’re relatively better than bad things you’ve experienced. A night in the penthouse suite of the Mandalay Bay is a boring Wednesday for a billionaire, whereas for me, it would be the highlight of my year and possibly life. That’s because a billionaire has few experiences “worse” than the penthouse suite of the Mandalay Bay, while I have few better. On this album, every song is packed full of energy, but with nothing to compare that energy “high” to, it’s monotonous. It loses its energy. You could listen to this album all day, or you could just do coke for 24 straight hours. You’d probably have a pretty similar experience. Lastly, I want to passionately complain about the last song on this album. I had to listen to it three times to make sure I wasn’t going crazy. The song “Smash” is nearly 11 minutes long. Or at least that’s what it’s listed as on Spotify. In reality, it’s really a 4 minute long song. I don’t mean the last 7 minutes are awful and can’t justifiably be called a “song.” No, the last 7 minutes is literally just silence. It’s literally not a song. What the hell?? I’m flabbergasted.

punks just a bit repetative

Pretty fly

Boy were we angry in the 90s. Smash comes in that sweet spot where grunge and alternative have pushed hair metal to the side and themselves are over saturating the music scene with a sound that isn't as great as the sound that got them here. This music was all over the radio and to a certain degree, still is. The upcoming latin music revival would push alt-rock to the side as the popular genre and The Offspring and their compatriots bear the brunt. 3/5.

09/11/2022 Got better as I kept listening. Not all of the songs are bangers, but overall it gets the job done. Probably won't listen again, but it wasn't a pain to get through. -- Last day in San Antonio, heading back to Houston tomorrow. It's been a very chill sunday so far.

Fun album but definitely more geared towards angry teenagers. Still some good tunes and fun to listen to even if not my cup of tea.

Not bad. A lot of these songs sound the same, which isn’t necessarily bad but it’s not great either. And the singer’s voice is a bit annoying. Listened 2x

I saw them in concert around 1998 and it was pretty good. They even played pretty fly for a white guy before it was released. I owned this and used to love it, but not so much now. My favorites were come out n play, gotta get away and self esteem; which were all played to death on modern rock radio over the past 20 years.

I thought I would like this album more, but maybe it's because I've heard self-esteem so much and his voice sounds similar in most of the songs. Definitely cherished this band during my angsty skateboarding days.

It’s such a high energy album laden with full blown snotty 90s punk attitude. There’s no real danger here though, it all feels very put on, an act played up for the cameras and promptly dropped the very second the director yells “cut!” These guys were so gimmicky in the way they served punk to the masses. They presented such an outlandish caricature of a punk rock band. The music is fun though, don’t get me wrong! Some core memories unlocked, a staple of my misguided youth and all that. It’s easy to see why The Offspring made a splash, they did all the right things and hit their marks, but then their fad came to an end and the world moved on to the next musical trend that kids could form their whole high school identities out of: I’m looking at you here early aughts emo kids.

I didn't enjoy this that much. Its just alright. Maybe if the vocals and drums were better.

It's the offspring, you get what you get I guess. Maybe I've listened a bit too much to their popular songs before to still really enjoy them. Still overall solid, almost a bit nostalgic.

Mostly yelling. I enjoyed hearing the songs from The Offspring I remember from the 90s, but others were not substantially different as to be interesting.

I loved this album as a kid but listening now it is kind of cheesy. Along with Green Day’s Dookie, this album is considered largely responsible for bringing punk mainstream but to me, I can hear a lot of influence from grunge, mainly Nirvana.

Not 100% convinced that this album is noteworthy enough to deserve a spot on this list, but I won't lie it's very nostalgic for me and has some absolute rippers. Can't help but move around to it.

Decent but if I'm in the mood for pop-punk then Blink-182 are ahead of Offspring every time.

Ich mag diese College-Film-Mucke einfach nicht

Considering how bad this band got pretty quickly after this album, I would put it in the guilty pleasure category (alongside White Zombie before Rob went solo and turned himself into a meme). It's a decent album for mainstream punk - better than Green Day's Dookie, which was its even more accessible contemporary - but I don't want to admit liking it.

I dunno, fun enough pop punk

3.4/5 decent punk rock

One of my favorite Offspring albums. Nostalgic for me, but it's not exactly perfect. There are moments I don't care for, but overall it's a solid album that deserves to be on this list.

Man, I used to love it. I guess it's aged ok...

Entertaining enough but ultimately disposable.

This is a good and fun album even if Offspring sounds like a bunch of frat boys decided to yell song lyrics in unison. The music is aggressive and most of all the album is fun, reminiscent of home team chants at a game. However, the songs resolve well and the album is a fairly well done complete experience. The album to sound this young and collegiate and pull it off indicates a measurable talent, and for that the album deserves a lot of respect along with the aforementioned. Notable exceptions, the weird narrator and 10+ minute encore track.

Classic songs were good, the rest were pretty bland

Short. Fast. Loud. Offspring were part of the fabric of the mid 90s. It was fun being taken back there for a moment. They're still making music but it's the 90s they are associated with in my mind. Who doesn't love a bit of punk now and then.

Better than I expected, but not my thing.

love self-esteem, an all time fave. the rest of the album is pretty mediocre to me

Wasn’t familiar w band name but knew a couple songs. Good history. Didn’t finish entire album.

Similar to dookie, this album influenced the music of my youth. A good nostalgic listen, but not music I’d listen to as a proper grown up…

Would be nostalgic if I had listened to it in my youth.

A few classic sons surrounded by typical Offspring rock. All and All, pretty good. 3.5/5 Standouts: Self Esteem, Come Out and Play, Gotta Get Away, Genocide, Bad Habit

3.5/5. Schmid tier as far as pop-punk goes. There are def good cuts, and it might be the Offsprings’ best, but there are too many “way-ohs

Rowdy and spiky, and decidedly American. A decent listen

been liked

I’m having sensory overload

Good, some songs blend together. Very noticeable voice, nice music to sing along to. Maybe a 7/10? Self Esteem is on it and is still a favorite. Second half is amazing. What happened to you and come out and play are :*

Classical grunge, punk album.

This is a high 3 album - liked the singing, the pace and the fact it has some good tunes. Although I can understand why some people wouldn’t like it.

A good choice of 90s skater punk. For what it is, it's fun. Favourites: "Bad Habit", "Gotta Get Away", "Self Esteem"

Such a throwback! For never listening to the album full through, I definitely knew a lot of the tracks, which goes to show they had a lot of hits! Very up beat and good music for driving and getting pumped up for the day.

Pros: - Really brings me back to being a kid in the 90s. I was 4 when this album came out so I probably heard it on the radio. - YOU GOTTA KEEP EM SEPARATED Cons: Misc:

Re-listening after years I have to be honest that it has lost quite a bit of its appeal. Now this came out when I was discovering punk and even in those days was not my favourite. Some songs still stand up fiercely over time, like Genocide, Come Out and Play and the title track, but the other half have lost something over time, like It'll Be a Long Time, Self Esteem and Killboy Powerhead. 3,5*

I had a passing familiarity with The Offspring as I do enjoy a few of their songs but have never listened to a full album. It really reminded me of playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games. It was fun although you aren't going to get a huge variety in terms of music as the songs do sound very similar. Yet, oddly it had this weird charm that just hit me in the right way although I don't think I'll be revisiting it soon though.

There's nothing wrong with this album. Fun, fast, punk pop. I just really dislike his voice, and still remember Pretty Fly For A White Guy which was awful.

It was no Americana - but still a good sound

vocalist sounds like they just learned all the bad words and barre chords. enjoyable but probably won't revisit soon.

Made for the mosh pit, high octane fast grunge punk metal, lots to enjoy.

Was hoping for so much more. Loved the intro tracks though can imagine that would've been a massive gee up to hear on first play in the stereo after purchase from Sanity.

Great rrrecorrd 4

Starts off strong, had lost me by the end. Definitely good angry kid music, pretty listenable.

This is great for what it is though honestly I would go with Bad Religion for largely the same sound with smarter lyrics and more interesting vocals (I watched Green Day OPEN for Bad Religion in the First Avenue main room in Minneapolis in the early 90s if you want to approximately date my old ass)

Much more adherent to the classic punk motif than I had anticipated from hearing only their single output. A bit of an homage to nirvana vocally

A little all over the place, but that’s part of its charm. Every song wallops you from the very beginning! This has aged fairly well (and fortunately it didn’t make me want to break out some JNCOs) and still made me boo around my office….until my principal came by and caught me 🤦🏾‍♂️

Everything sounds the same to me.

Uff joya <3

I thought this was going to be death metal lol, but I was "pleasantly" surprised.

i love the instrumentals, but dexter holland is an awful singer

Not familiar with this album. Self-Esteem sounds very familiar --lots of radio play. Movies too?

I've heard a couple of their songs in the past, but never really paid attention, so this is my first real listen to their music. Energetic, fun, and super-tight. Somewhat similarity to the Meat Puppets, a band I really like, but with more edge and thrashiness. I like their sense of melody in some of the tracks. Overall, I like this album. Almost a danceable, or at least foot-tapping, version of punk-influenced rock. Some real catchy guitar licks, too. To me, they sound kind of like the garage bands I heard in the mid and late 80s, but at a much higher level of ability, craft, and discipline (in a great way). Fun stuff.

Was skeptical about this album, but the simple melodies and generic lyrics are easy to listen to

Doesn't strike me as something that ought to be on the list. Not that I hate it.

I keep getting just okay albums

it's good for drowning out thoughts with

Good one, this punk organic sound is a bless after all those synths on this list lol. I’ve never heard this one in full although I’ve liked Come Out and Play & Self Steem ever since I was a kid. Nice to hear the evolution that took them to Americana. (Also, nice that the hidden song is the same one)

Drooling 90’s right now. Lemme go get my j’nco’s for a relisten

With more listening, there is more nuance to the singles where it's faux ska with high pitches shouting and slabs of guitars.

Reminds me of my youth - although not necessarily in a good way

pretty corny but fairly fun to listen to, i think a couple of the songs in the middle section could have been cut out. i never realized before how nirvana-influenced they are, it really shows on some of these songs. 6/10

You have to be in a certain mood to enjoy this album, otherwise it gets annoying. Loved some parts but could have been shorter or with more variety.

Pretty great punk album. Pop-punk, but with an agressive edge. Dosent have a whole lot of variety though, even by punk standards. Closer to a 3.5

Wasn't feeling it until Genocide, that was a banger. 'Come out and Play' and 'Self Esteem' were pretty nostalgic (or at least well know). 3.4?

it was eh some hits some miss

Come Out and Play is an all-time great, but I may be biased as a huge fan of both ECW and FMW.

A few tracks stand out but there’s not enough here to merit repeat listening. The production on the vocals is just awful! Sounds like he’s singing underwater!

I remember this as a better album than it is nowadays. It's a nice collection of proper punk rock songs. The problem is that there are so many such albums. It does not really stand out.

Sounds like system of a down. not necessarily my cup of tea but actually not bad. 3.5

Classic 90s punk, not super-polished, but a good album. I have heard a few tracks before.

Starts out really fun. The kind of Rock music that I like. Great drums, nice melodies driving bass. Really good in the middle not quite as strong g towards the end but overall a solid album 3 stars.

Ugh, obviously a pretty iconic band but started to all sound the same toward the end. Was not my favorite but worth listening to for the classics

Of course, self esteem is a banger. Unfortunately, on first listen, no other song comes even close to the coherence and catchy-ness of the hit. The narrator did not seem to fit the theme, which may have been intentional, but it was still a bit jarring. I like some punk rock, but I do not see myself going back to the offspring any time soon. The hidden track was nice, though

At points the vocals made me think I was listening to Weird Al. "Gotta Get Away" had serious Nirvana vibes. Overall not a bad variety of songs.

It was fun to revisit this one, even if it wasn’t revelatory. It’s about as straightforward as 90s Epitaph punk gets, with double-time drums and probably the same distortion pedal everyone was using. Some tracks really hold up well, especially “Bad Habit” and the singles, featuring memorable lyrics from future PhD Dexter Holland. There are some ska songs of the era that hold up well, “What Happened To You” is not one of them. The 2nd half in general is less memorable in general, and they ape Bad Religion more than I remember, but it’s still a fun listen.

Great nostalgia. Don't know if I would enjoy it as much if it was my first time listening today.

If you are into a activity this might raise your cardio. Ok for sure but not my typical cup of tea

cool but not my thing

This album is quite hard rock-y? Or something like that. I am not the biggest fan of the hard rock-y aspect.

Harder punk rock than I'm used to. Have to be in the right mood, but definitely has some good songs

Cracking album. Would have scored it 5 when I was 13 - 14, 4 when I was 15 - 16, today it’s good but not outstanding. A product of the age of the listeners.

It's fine, I don't understand why it is included in this list, but I listened to the whole thing. It's fine

I'm a big fan of the offspring's album Americana and I love some of their singles. This started slow for me but definitely picked up on the second half of the album where I geek they find their feet with bangers such as Self Esteem, Smash and What Happened To You embodying the sound of 90s America. With lyrics like "I'm not a trendy asshole, don't give a fuck if it's good enough for you" the Offspring cement themselves as one the teenage angst punk rock heavyweights.

Interesting!

Huge nostalgia throughout this album. Pretty sure we had this album on tape. Offspring were big when I was pretty young.

3.5/5 It was a nice hard rock album, I'll give it another try later on

it's like i'm back at john b dey. self esteem is a banger

Mixed feelings but that's what I expected. I think The Offspring are good at what they do, plenty of great guitar riffs, high energy and attitude, lots of good moments with backed up vocals that I like. But they fall into that quantity over quality trap where they make lots of high energy songs, but don't have enough variety in style and dynamics (the singer is pretty much shouting for the whole album). I think these guys and NOFX triggered a real 90s punk movement, which spawned many bands I like more, but I can't listen to too much of this fast-paced double-time drum stuff coz it slowly turns into a wall of sound and is a little too samey. I like this band a lot but this album in particular, not so much.

Good punk for it's time, but doesn't have the same impact as other artists in the genre.

Bit shouty at times. But generally good.

For Offspring it's a good album, especially cause it came out when I was about 15 and crazy times with fast beats

3 stars

I’ve never been able to get on The Offspring’s wavelength. I respect the idea of melding punk, metal, and grunge in theory but in practice it just doesn’t do much for me. It kind of makes me feel like I’m about to get bullied. Good hooks though

Pues nada espectacular o particularmente llamativo, aquí si todas me suenan casi igual

Growing up, this is what loads of my friends listened to. It wasn't really my bag, but I suppose I could be described as 'pop-punk adjacent' - not a fan, but more familiar than the average punter by dint of exposure. I remember thinking Smash was fine at the time, no more, no less. And I think I was right. All quite samey, not exactly a breadth of tone or instrumentation to marvel at, but okay nonetheless.

Solid punk music, but it's just not my style.

Back in the day, I found the radio singles ("Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem") fun but never really explored the album. The band is easy to categorize as pop punk, and some people like to throw the term "metal" into the mix, and to me they sort of blended in alongside quite a few other bands. I'm glad I checked out the whole album, and it was fun to go back and hear those hit songs within their context.

Well this really isn't my thing - but I didn't hugely hate it either, which surprised me. Also, cannot believe this was 1994, thought it was later than that. Feel it may have been ahead of its time

Pretty good punk, but no real variety or depth

Surprised a little bit by these songs - many of them seem more "serious" straight-ahead punk, as opposed to most of their radio songs which seem more like joke songs. I definitely enjoyed it. Not sure it belongs with the greats though. The hidden track reminded me of the old days, listening to 6 minutes of silence to hear some weird little ditty.

Surprised I've never listened before. Perfect expression of the 90s.

fun high school times

Come out and Play, Self Esteem Offspring are fun

I have a soft spot for this album. Hearing "Self Esteem" on the radio was unique since it was so negative, which wasn't common in the 90s on Rochester's pop radio. I've heard maybe half of this album's tracks? Kind of reminds me of the Ace of Spades album by Motorhead, like all the songs kind of blend together but they got a thing going on and they are nailing what they are aiming for. Fast and loose. Would have been fun to listen to them in a dive bar before they got popular! I'd rate it higher than Motorhead since this feels like it aged better.

Not bad. A couple of old cool get fired up songs. Solid entry.

A 90s grunge rock band. Not the best, but not bad.

Generally like The Offspring. These songs were all new to me (total lie lol I just didn't recognize track names). Very nice album. Good driving music.

Classic grunge

was okay on some parts, last song smash is meh

fun, would have loooved this at 14

12/30 Fun, Punk rock album.

Love the energy on this album, but his voice is on the whiny side. Favorite tracks were Come Out And Play, and It'll Be A Long Time.

I couldn’t get through this quickly enough. The 90s version of pop-punk was something that I was able to largely avoid. I knew it wasn’t for me but I understood why it existed and if Blink or Green Day or Sum 41 came on the radio, it didn’t bother me too much. This lot though almost always annoyed me. I had never heard a whole album before and although I felt tolerant for a while, it didn’t take long before I was flat out sick of it. Lyrically they seem to have a message I can get on board with, but all too often they sail a little too close to glorifying that which they aim to decry. I have written plenty of reviews in which I show my full support for music that is less than sophisticated. I reiterate now that I am no music snob, but I simply don’t like the way The Offspring do what they do. They strive for base and make it. The singing is just awful with a single gear and it’s an irritating one, and the backing vocals are, with barely an exception the most annoying thing in every song. You may wish to accuse me of “not getting it” or “missing the point” but I thoroughly get it, I lived right through it and I completely got the point from the moment I heard it. The only thing I never found out was if The Offspring “got it”. Were they in on their own joke? (making the worst of their chosen style of music) or was their self awareness so poor that they allowed the band’s success make them believe they were good? On the evidence of this album, they are not good.

I was about 9 years old when Smash was released so I don't remember the hits from 1994, but summer 1997 was all Offspring. Me and my friends were really excited about "All I Want" single and "Ixnay on the Hombre" album so eventually one of us also bought Smash. After that it was all "Naa naa nan nan naa! Naa naa nan nan naa!" for a couple of months. The excitement lasted for a year or so, but the irritating and quite shitty hit songs of "Americana" cut it short. One of those albums that I remember from start to finish. Both stars are for nostalgic reasons because nowadays Dexter Holland's whining and howling is hard to listen to.

I didn’t know that all these songs I hated were by the same band!

Better than I thought but didn't save it to my collection

As a teenager I remember being told that this was a great album to listen to if I was ever angry. I never felt the need at the time and now perhaps I’ve lost my teenage angst but this all just sounded like a bit of a ruckus to me. Do enjoy some later Offspring stuff but this didn’t really hit the spot.

Weird one

really not a fan, most of it sounded the same to me

I am familiar with The Offspring and currently have 7 songs liked by them on Spotify with 3 from this album - "Got to Get Away", "Come Out and Play" and "Self-Esteem" - which were all the big radio hits and are fun songs that I still like to this day. I'm excited to see what else I missed on this one that weren't the radio hits I also like "Nitro (Youth Energy) and "Bad Habit" - but the rest of this is just sorta so so and I don't need to hear any of the rest of this again. Liked songs on Spotify: 5/13 (I'm not counting the first track which is just a guy talking) Rating: 2/5

Some classic songs

Not great for me

It doesn't get close to Nirvana . Wouldn't dash out to buy or listen to this again .

I liked this album when it came out, but in my defense, I was a teenager. Maturity is realizing that this album is actually pretty formulaic and uninspired. It tries hard to be gritty, but sounds like whiny pop punk instead.

I used to have this album. I'd bought it because Self Esteem was on it. I remember that I wasn't a big fan of much of the rest of the album.

No. no nono. no m gusto

A skint man’s Green Day, without the songs or the subtlety, all just a bit shouty.

not my tipe, es un rock muy rock 2/5

Unpretentious, but I've expected more of this album.

I listened twice and can’t even recall a single song

it’s alright, very 90’s

It was not fun to listen to. And jt was verry boring i had to fight to come to the end of the album because its all the same.

Dont love the 90s rock

I didn't like them at all in 1994. Let's see if I feel differently now! Ok... nope, don't like them. Self Esteem is alright, but the rest is really not for me.

I have colossal respect for Dexter Holland, the Offspring's singer, for going back to academia decades after abandoning it for music, and doing a widely-cited PhD in molecular biology, which happens to be my field. What a dude. But that doesn't mean that he can sing. His voice rasps through this record like a cheesegrater. It's also painfully derivative stuff, that sounds more like 80s metal than 90s punk, except without the panache or sense of fun. But still ... what a dude.

Not really for me, wasn’t awful but wasn’t good.

290/1089 This sounds just isn’t really for me, it’s a bit meh bc of that, like it’s fine but idk i’m just not that into it. I thought I’d gotten quite far in and discovered i was only on the 4th track and most of the album felt that way to me unfortunately i liked the guitar “outro” of Smash a LOT, then it just goes into a very long silence (presumably bc of the secret track but on streaming it feels a little egregious) fave: Self Esteem 34/100

montonous

like the vibe, but not something i listen to

A bad punk album that encapsulates some of the weaknesses of the genre in its repetitive sound, whiny vocals, and vapid lyrics. Feels like a cynical attempt to muscle in on the hype of Nirvana and Green Day. That means that the sound is fine enough to hang on for 2*, but this isn’t worth your while.

This was all rather run-of-the-mill pop punk with nothing particularly original or engaging. The best track by a long way was ‘Come and Play’ which had a nice surf guitar riff, but other than that it felt like a rehash of what’s been done before, which is often a problem with newer punk releases.

Pretty underwhelming. It isn’t exactly a terrible album (the instrumentals and production are decent), but it is to my ears pretty generic punk as had been done many times before. Almost every song sounds the same, with a few exceptions. ‘Come Out and Play’ was a bit more interesting with its surf-rock guitar part and was the best track, while ‘Killboy Powerhead’ was a ska-punk cover, although in that case it was different but rubbish. Other songs really do sound like Nirvana rip-offs to me, especially ‘Gotta Get Away’ and ‘Self Esteem’. The whiny, irritating vocals cemented my 2-star rating.

Most of the top reviews seem to be from people who were of an age with this album. I wasn't even born yet. Ergo, there is not any sense of nostalgia for me. I find this album annoying more than anything. It doesn't even have any of the hits I recognize from the Offspring (though I've heard Come Out and Play on 90s playlists. The bass is pretty sick on this one). I'm not sure what kind of enjoyment a person from my generation, raised on 00s and10s pop music, would find in this.

Whatever

Brings back memories, a few good songs.

Offspring sucks. I'm putting that out there so it's clear where I stand as the album starts. Pop punk is one of the worst parts of the 90s. Greenday sucks and Offspring rode their "punk" coattails to fame. Nothing like a stupid sketch to open an album. Nitro (Youth Energy) is better than I wanted to believe these guys were capable of. Bad Habit and Gotta Get Away were both big hits and they are terrible. The album tracks are superior to the hits. Could do without the updates from the opening sketch voiceover guy. Come Out and Play is terrible. I have no idea how this got popular. Pop punk and Nu Metal, if it weren't for hip hop and grunge the 90s would have been worse than the 80s. Self Esteem was the best of the singles, but that is a really low hurdle. Killboy Powerhead is as bad as the title. And the ska influenced What Happened to You? reminded me that ska had a comeback in the 90s too. What a terrible decade. A ten minute closing track? No thanks. And we get the bookend with the voice over guy again. The hidden hidden track. Three minutes of silence so you can't figure it out from hitting skip track...is there nothing the 90s didn't ruin? Five minutes of silence...unacceptable. Finished with a Middle Eastern instrumental of Come Out and Play. Was it worth the wait? It was not, Other Barry.

It's not that this is 'bad' per se, I just have v little interest at all in pop punk or any of its iterations. Give me the real thing or fuck off

Man, this is the same old repetitive and boring Offspring again. While listening I mostly felt nothing — just kind of numb and a little disappointed. The riffs are basic, the choruses are shouted the same way every time, and the songs all blur together into one long, predictable punk-pop blur. Nothing here feels fresh or interesting at all. The only good thing about this album (and the band in general) is how it instantly takes me back to childhood. It makes me feel like I’m playing Sega Crazy Taxi again — windows down, cruising around, that dumb nostalgic energy. That part is genuinely fun and comforting. But once that nostalgia wears off, there’s really not much left. “Self Esteem,” “Come Out and Play,” and “Gotta Get Away” are the only ones that still kinda work because of the memories attached to them. The rest? Completely skippable. It’s not terrible, but it’s nothing special either. If you want that 90s skate-punk nostalgia hit, throw it on for a quick trip down memory lane. Otherwise, there are way better albums from that era.

Love the pacing. Great momentum throughout. Not my particular cup of tea, but in the context of the mid-90s, I have to imagine this was like grabbing a live wire. I had "Come Out and Play" in my brain like anyone near a radio, but didn't really remember how futuristic it sounded. Overall, the album seems to be both a continuation of, and significant portender of significant aspects of rock as a genre.

Remind me again .. is the book's full title 1001 Albums of Modest Interest to Those So Inclined ... ? The official description of this album compares it to Green Day's Dooky. Some people whom I respect like that album, but having been trapped in a car for like five hours this one time in the mid-late 90s with a guy who was really into Blink 182 and Green Day and stuff ... my generosity of spirit is gone, leaving only rage and hostility. Plus which, all these semi-punky California boys with their cleanly produced, aggressive schlock ... again, hostility. Thumbs down. And I really mean it! I do remember the lead single, Come Out and Play, from hearing it on the radio back in the days in question. It's pretty good, I have to admit.

Nothing unexpected here. A pile of songs that set my teeth on edge, and "self esteem" which didn't.

When I think of all the great records on independent labels it is a bit of a shock to learn that this is the best selling independent album ever

Okay album

pas trop mon style

I was expecting to like this more. But the vocals lacked something for me at the beginning.

Some is okay, much is alternately monotonous or irritating.

It’s no more than a 1 star album all the way through but will give it a bonus point as Self Esteem is a cracking tune.

This was a fun and energetic album to listen to. I really liked the guitar playing in a lot of the songs. Come out and play is an absolute banger. Despite all this, I don’t really see myself listening to this album again

This is okay I guess. It just doesn’t do much for me

I just don't like The Offspring. I can't say it's a 1star album, cause there is some half-decent alternative stuff, but man. I hate "Self-Esteem".

4/10 Favorite: Self Esteem

Interesting, not for me. Nice intro and outro. 4.9/10

This is just too sanitized and clean to me, but honestly better than I expected. So not sure, probably 2 or 3 stars, if I am feeling very positive today.
