Reviews (page 4 of 7)

I like it better than the rating suggests but I can’t give it higher than a three as it isn’t exactly life changing. But it’s good.

This started slow but as the music got progressively more unusual I enjoyed it more. There's a lot going on musically even if most of it is really simple. 3.0/5.0: Good

This Britpop sounds way too much like Ameri-rock. I guess it's OK. Maybe a few more listens would improve it, so I'll give it a 3. The middle third of the album is definitely the strongest third. Highlight: 'Dreaming of You'

Enjoyable but nothing amazing.

Another one I own but had forgotten about .. it was fine.

= The Beatles

not bad, cool sound

bit too fantastical for my liking i think, it kinda sounds like theyre trying to make sea shantys, flat 7

Not bad.

Fine but why

Enjoyable, everything was played very well, enjoyed all the songs.

A bit to poppy for my liking, but otherwise showed potential.

This was a fun discovery; it was my first time hearing it and there’s a lot to digest. A unique sound that sort of reminded me of The Doors. While it has some of that 60s psych jangle, there’s many other styles to explore here - a lot of variety on this album that makes it difficult to box into a single genre of rock. I’ll be giving this more listens. A 3 rating seems fair and I’m not surprised to read this was bumped off the list in later editions, but it’s a strong 3 for me.

A bunch of pop songs with varying influences, not badly made but I'm left wondering 'why'? Does not feel like an album. Dreaming of You is radio-friendly and some other songs are fine but none wows me in the least. A generous 3.

Good but not great. Dreaming of you stands out a mile as the best track but did still enjoy the rest

Better than expected. I shall have to have a few listens to decide whether I really liked it. Its got a bit of psychedelia and a folky vibe in places, and that is what I find a bit difficult to work out whether its my thing or not.

They draw from a wide range of ’60s bands for their sound, which works well. The problem is that it can feel disjointed at times and not as cohesive as it could be. Still, it’s an enjoyable listen overall and I might need to revisit this one.

Good psychedelic rock. Occasionally the singer had a bit of a Jim Morrison thing going on. I’d definitely listen to this again.

Good not great. Listenable but not worth the re-listen.

A lot of influences and genres mashed together here, mostly successfully, which is remarkable. I didn't love this music but it's a very interesting wander, there's something new to hear every few bars each song. It's kind of like walking through an exhibition or something, taking in each display, then moving on. Good, but ephemeral, I don't think this will be one I'll revisit.

Fine but not worthy of a revisit

This is actually not too shabby. I was half expecting some run of the mill "lads causing havoc in Tesco, great banter innit" album, but this is much more psychedelic and nuanced than that. There is some genuinely decent 70s throwback style riffage here, combined with the off-kilter energy of British indie and almost sea-shanty like glockenspiel. The problem for me is that it doesn't breach the threshold between "decent" and "great" often enough to be an experience that I'd actively seek out again. It's consistently very listenable, interesting at points even, but it doesn't really get me off my seat.

Mixed feelings. Not at all memorable, and not even something I will want to listen ever again, still it was not a "wasted time listening". It has its moments, and it is a good interpretation/tribute to an aesthetic that, in 2002, was long gone, even though it actually infuses it with some ska and romani-punk approaches. Would give it a 2.5 if there were half points

Pretty good album.

Don't get the "hate" in the top reviews. There are way worse albums on this list. It's not amazing either.

Basically this is modern psychedelic music. They took some rock, indie and techno vibes but made a 70's psychedelic album in the early 2000's. I am not really sure they did anything new and interesting with it. I don't think it was as disjointed as a 70's trip, like maybe they micro dosed their way through the album so it could stay coherent and connected. Not sure they are going to be a band I search out but it wasn't bad.

Like I didn’t love it but this thing went quick 3/5

ok album

OK Musik - festlig men lidt ensformigt

Consistent album, no real stand out tracks. Enjoyed all the same.

The first 4 tracks are tremendous, rip-roaring, riotous, joyful. 5* Then Simon Diamond comes in with inane lyrics and it's a bunch of mediocare fare after that. As an overall album it probably only deserves a 2

Never heard of them. The Coral are a solid band. I would be happy if I saw them at my local. But not 1001

Favorite Track: I Remember When

The album started off sounding like Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd which I enjoyed. I thought the album was ok.

Just ok

A fun little album this. 3.5 stars

An unknown and ordinary band. Some good vocal and good arrangements.

Huh, struggling in the 21st century. However, when I was a lovesick dude in my twenties the one scene in scrubs where JD and Eliot get back together at Christmas was soundtracked by Dreaming of You which remains a monster cut. Impossible to separate from nostalgia.

I like what they are going for with the psychedelic edge and other wee touches but overall there is nothing about this that would make me want to listen again. A pleasant listen though (is this what’s called damning with faint praise?)

It was okay—quirky in a way that didn’t fully click with me. Some songs had good music, but overall it wasn’t really to my liking.

Only OK!

So mixed. An album for all moods.

All over the place. Some good, some bad, some weird. Not memorable.

# 547 : The Coral by The Coral The Coral – Psychedelia on Training Wheels Short, sweet, and mildly psychedelic, The Coral is like dipping your toes into a kaleidoscope. It’s got neo-psychedelia, folk rock, and a frontman who sounds like he borrowed his voice from a vintage rock museum. Interesting? Sure. Memorable? Not really. They’ve done a decent job, and “Remember When” stands out as the best of the bunch. But overall, it’s the kind of album you’re glad you heard once—and equally glad you don’t need to hear again. Verdict: Three stars for effort. One listen is plenty. If you have to listen to this, look out for : Remember When Listened : 15/08/2025

Decent.

Album 864 of 1089 The Coral - The Coral (2002) Rating : 3 / 5 Really enjoyed this one. It brought to mind Tom Waits (only certain years) and a bit of Captain Beefheart (only his good stuff) , but on a much more controlled level. Up-tempo rocking tunes with a dash of uniqueness, and honestly, it’s music that doesn’t really need a label. You get surf-rock twang one minute, a touch of psych-pop the next, and the whole thing has this off-kilter charm without ever going too far off the rails. Standouts like “Dreaming of You” and “Shadows Fall” stick with you long after, and the band’s knack for melody keeps the weirdness accessible. Whatever you’d call it, it’s a fun, engaging listen from start to finish. One of those pleasant surprises.

Driving British post-punk that sounds like a precursor to Arctic Monkeys and The Bravery. I’d listen to it if it came on the radio. I don’t think I’d pay to see these songs performed live.

First listen

About as hectic as I anticipated from the album. There's some old timey influences there, but not really my thing.

3.5*? I think I need to give this one another listen with headphones, instead of in the car. It sounded interesting, I think.

I liked this…some good songs. Didn’t blow my mind but a relatively pleasant listen

Quite liked this one tbh

Beboppin good time! The overall sound is upbeat, fantastic summer album.

Really good, interesting, original sound. I think more people should hear this band

Not great

Dreaming of You is good, the rest of the album fails to live up to it. More interesting than your typical 2000s album though, and much shorter too

Dreaming Of You is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Simpsons: No

Average.

Though this was going to be better than it was. Dreaming of you is obviously a classic, but I think my favourite track has to be Simon Diamond

One of the most 3 star albums I’ve ever 3ed

Loved the song “Goodbye” and I also liked “Dreaming of You” but unfortunately the rest of the album didn’t really click with me. I didn’t like the ska and sea shanty elements.

You know sometimes I get an album like this and I just really don't think it's important enough for the top 1001 albums. Even if I like it, I do not think this is a truly necessary album. That said, this is still a nice little album. I enjoyed my time with it, though it kinda dragged. 69/100

Solid middle of the road rating for this one. A couple catchy songs, several wtf songs, and the rest just mediocre.

Some nice sounds and many of the songs couls easily fit on the playlists I listen to. However, I felt that a lot of the songs gave of an air of self importance, bordering on arrogance that the quiality of the product didn't warrant. I dodnt think this one is for me. 2.5 but will round up to 3.

Yeah it’s not groundbreaking, but it’s an ecclectic mix of music that did quite well on a friday afternoon on the beach. 3/5

Ojämnt, men topparna är riktigt bra. Väldigt spretigt, saknar tydlig linje. Trea

Maybe I'm just going crazy, but this is not what I was advertised. Like, it's fine as is, but there is a certain quirkiness present on here that I couldn't really gel with all that much.

Fun, but much better first half than second.

Felt like there was a lot of exploration but in different directions and as it was a short album, it didn't have a strong centre.

I didn't really work out the band or the album's identity - stylised 70s concept, 00s rock, comic rock??? If there was one thing they'd gone all in with along the lines of the stronger songs I'd have got it's inclusion. That said a couple of the stronger songs are good - low 3

The Coral get the lowest 3 from me, pipped above the highest 2 because some of the psych influenced tracks are great.

This is one of those records I’d heard the single off of a million times, absolutely loved, and yet never listened to the album. It’s ok, but not as good as “Dreaming of you” would suggest

Fun little quirky indie-psychstuff album with a lead vocalist who sometimes sounds a little bit like Billy Joel "Described as a neo-psychedelia and folk rock album, frontman James Skelly's voice was compared to Eric Burdon of the Animals and Jim Morrison of the Doors." Yeah, alright, if you say so, Wikipedia, but also fight me because that's Sometimes-Billy-Joel singing Will the real Billy Joel please stand up?

It started off good but I lost interest towards the end

A little tame but not bad at all.

Like a British version of cake time traveled from the 60’s to 2002.

Another discovery courtesy of the generator, had never heard of this band. Enjoyed this overall, appreciate the vintage Doors vibes. Nothing blew my mind but not a bad listen

This is the kind of eclectic, mad cap debut album that you think is normally followed by a great sophomore effort once they’ve truly worked out their sound Except that never really happened with The Coral and this is their high water mark (despite a handful of great songs later on) It’s never dull this, but it never quite works. Dreaming of You and Goodbye are great songs though

This was a really fun ride! It made me think of new age circus music! Short and sweet, with catching and interesting songs. My favorite part about the songs is that they change, usually around the halfway mark to something completely different that still works just as well. It really hooked me with it's presentation, purposefully different and proud of it. Favorite songs: I Remember When Shadow Fall

Dismissed this when it came out, I was in a different musical groove back then. Revisiting it now it's not so bad

Dreaming of you is a brilliant track, which probably overshadows the rest of the album a bit really. I do like the sound though, feels summery. Saw them at sound city in Liverpool a while ago and they were decent. Bill Ryder-Jones was actually involved in making music for a mate of mines band Still think it's worthy of a 3.5

Reminded me of the Zutons, I may come back to this album. I don't think it crossed the threshold of 4, but a solid 3 for now, maybe a 4 in the future.

Has some ok tracks but nothing exciting or really bad.

This was fun and uplifting. But didn’t specifically stand out to me.

T'was nice, liked some tracks.

I've never heard of them before. Nothing new. Nothing groundbreaking. But almost a fun listen. Weak three stars. worst: "Skeleton Key" favourite: "Waiting for the Heartaches", "Wildfire" 2,5

Another unnecessary British album. Dreaming of you was pretty good but the second half was quite loose and rambly.

Another Brit band I've never heard of. Sounds like they were trying to make a record in 1967. Fine but nothing special.

Not that it matters but this album cover is really cool. the music itself is fine. It sounds like an homage to 60's garage rock but I do appreciate the more modern sounding production. Does this need to be on the list? No.

A few songs start off pretty messy. After that, I understand the comparisons to Jim Morrison. The songs changing pace are reminiscent of the Doors. Musically it’s a solid album. I don’t hear anything ground breaking.

Actually quite good, but another example of a band that were added because they were the big thing when the author wrote the list, not because they wrote music that would stand the test of time.

Dreaming of you is a banger, there are a few more pretty ok songs, but as an album it is pretty weak. Dreaming of you saves a 3.

Feels like a 70/80s vibe to me, rather than early 2000s. Britrock, some familiar riffs, nothing too special for me. 3

Everytime Len Houmous bumped into Paul or Ringo, he’d always joke that The Coral were the best band to ever come out of The Cavern Club. He wouldn’t dare say that to George. He had a renowned right hook! 2.7 4/11 Dreaming of You

back half better than front goodbye | wildfire

Cool vibe, some i liked some i didn't but consistent sound throughout

Not my absolute favorite, but a very cohesive sound and vibe

capa irada

Standout Songs: I Remember When Dreaming of You Skeleton Key Calendars and Clocks

2.7 - Was this added because they have one great song?

Mostly meh. Dreaming of You feels like lightning in a bottle. I didn't mind Goodbye. Whatever happened in the last 20 seconds of Skeleton Key was fun. Fave Tracks: Dreaming of You 2.7/5

Unnecessary in this list, but "Dreaming of you" has been a staple in my mp3 player and I can still vibe hard to that song

a mix of some absolutely brilliant songs and some totally awful ones. not overly impressed with it as an album but still grateful to have discovered some of the songs

Really liked most of the songs!

Definitely has a unique sound to it, just not sure if it’s for me

Decent but unfortunately unremarkable. Fun in its weirdness and varied sounds

I mean it wasn’t the best thing ever but it was still pretty good and it didn’t go on too long. 3 stars

Never heard of The Coral before. This album I would put squarely into the "background music while I clean the house" category.

Not as bad as the reviews would have you think. 3.5/5

Creative and unique fusion of psychedelic ska

Listened to the whole album without anything really grabbing me. Not that it was bad or unoriginal, but nothing stuck out as something I'd want to listen to again. Might have to listen again but maybe not. On the fence with this one as on paper it seems like something I'd enjoy.

It's a strange sub-genre of music that I can only describe as "Tim-Burton" rock. It's good, I like their unique sound, but they really strike me as a bit of a one trick pony. Not a ton of variety.

Pretty decent, but I think it was correct to remove from later editions.

I enjoyed this more than I thought. A high three!

There are some cool tracks, but the album doesn't do anything groundbreaking for me. It's a nice and quick listen, though.

It’s ok

Nice short album but this was just generic rock and I didn't find anything special about it; certainly not 1001 worthy. 6/10

This album was cool, I wasn’t blown away but I enjoyed listening to this.

Liked this first time around as they came from the Wirral (as did my girlfriend at the time). Listening again it has aged better than many of its contemporaries although is a little all over the shop with its genres. First two songs are the strongest then its a bit more of a mixed bag. Not sure will be listening again in a hurry - its probably a 5/10 but as feeling generous will round to a 3.

Fun but probably forgettable.

I liked it but didn’t figure out what aspect earned the album its spot on the list.

Nice little album. Not an instant hit. Not sure what it's trying to be

A "Oh i think i heard one of the tracks somewhere" album (yeah this feels like a one hit wonder band). It's okey Indie pop-rock mixed with some random instruments to make it a bit original. not a fan of the ompa tempo in a lot of the songs. not unlistenable but not my taste.

I cannot tell what genre this is. Skeleton key best song. 3/5

Some early 2000s quirky indie-rock that, while not bad at all, gets tired and repetitive real quick. A sort of one-trick pony. It reminded me a lot of another album on here by a group called "The Zutons", though that record was more colorful and generally more enjoyable. More than anything, this is an album that values melody, which I appreciated, especially with those harmonies on 'Dreaming of You', easily the best song here. While it's steeped in its vintage garage-rock influences, some elements of the album reminded me of '80s post-hardcore, mainly a band like NoMeansNo on a song like 'Skeleton Key, the most chaotic and one of the most enjoyable tracks here. Again, not bad, but I'd struggle to be able to pick it out of a group of other albums in this lane. Still solid.

It's a bit all over the place, and Skeleton Key crosses the line from Beefheart homage to pastiche. Some of it is not too bad though. A low three.

Ahoy, matey!

Not bad

Originalot i bon so!

3 - I have a soft spot for revival psychedelic rock. It's not for everyone and I wouldn't say this album is even genre defining but I enjoyed most of it and wasn't turned off by any of it.

The Good: Coral is the indication on how the oceans are doing The Bad: it seems the oceans are not doing too well, as this coral is bland The Ugly: that, again, we have a band who’s incapable of coming up with an original album title… First listen was a “what the fuck is this doing on the list!!!…!!..!..!?????!??!” and then towards the end of the album I found myself starting having fun… So by the second listen I could understand that there are people who enjoy this… just count me out of being one to herald this as must hear before I die. If this band would have figured out what style they were going to emulate, maybe the overall experience would have been more enjoyable. However, the now we are this, then we are that, then we sing a little like this, and watch what I can do here that, just doesn’t make one pay too much attention. However, no knives came close to my wrists, so chalk this up to another experience… 2 1/2* upgraded

this was pretty good.

I dig this. Not enough to go out of my way to check out more, but I dig it.

A few good ones, mostly filler. Plausibly somewhat rated on having a medicore mood while listening

quite similar to some clash songs where its a bit like reggae, but done like over 20 years later?? Overall most songs feel a bit nothing though, a bit like madness and that 'x' punk album from ages ago. I do like the chorus and other effect use. Vocals are quite annoying but do definitely work in some places. Favourite songs: I remember when, shadows fall, waiting for the heartaches. Overall around 6/10

i'm not really in the mood for it right now but it's not a bad album. sorry if that is unfair to you mr. coral

Never heard of them! Not legendary but still a nice listen. Some of it was 60’s psychedelic vibes, some ska sounds, some early alternative. I enjoyed most of it.

It's okay. A little homogenous. I enjoyed my listen. May not seek it out.

Really surprised this is in the list. Weird Doors and Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd mashup with some wacky sea shanties and klezmer music mixed in for good measure. Shouldn’t work but it kind of does (for me). 3⭐️

This grew on me. It made me think a bit of the Struts or the Hives, but with a bit more psychedelia, whichI appreciated. Ome or two songs did get a bit repetitive ("Calendars and Clocks" comes to mind. IN teresting that the short songs were just the right size. "Goodbye" had a nice little jam in the middle which was cool. Pretty, pretty good. If someone put it on at a party, I would not go screaming from the room. Top tracks: "Spanish Main," "Shadows Fall," "Goodbye"

I worried that this album would be more of the same as the Bees album assigned previously, since both came out around the same time from the UK, both are some new kind of hard to pin down indie or folk rock, and both were nominated for a Mercury prize. Looking at all the Mercury prize nominees, I'm starting to wonder if it is for eclectic UK stuff that people outside UK will never understand. Gripe aside, this album was decent. It had a much more uptempo rock sound. Almost a 2000's southern rock sound but with more old world country or mariachi stylings. I doubt I'm going back for much more, but I didn't mind the listening experience.

a·nach·ro·nism [əˈnakrəˌnizəm] noun A thing belonging or appropriate to a period other than that in which it exists, especially a thing that is conspicuously old-fashioned. (I would give this a higher score if it was released in 1968 instead of 2002. Didn't dislike it - in fact, it grew on me - but the fact that it was a complete rip-off of 60s psychedelia was a little much for me).

Eclectic mix of music

I didn’t find the catchy tunes yet

A good listen, with a blend of psychedelic tinged pop and rock. The Coral's sound not dissimilar to fellow scouse band the Zutons. Didn't hear anything that was a particular stand out, but decent enough

Interesting and had it moments but probably won’t be coming back to this one.

3.5 dreaming of you great song

Man I knew a guy in high school who would go out of their way to find wacky and off the wall type rock albums like this just to flex their musical acumen. Thats all I could think of during this listen, I didnt like it because I didnt get it, man. That being said the arrangements can be pretty good sometimes, and the vocals seriously hit. I just wish I liked it.

The “most annoying person you know”s favourite album. Since I was already familiar with Tally Hall and Man Man the novelty of this totes random stuff didn’t wow me like it might have in 2002. That being said it’s a fun album with a lot of interesting stuff going on musically. Plus I’m a sucker for harmonies and they LOVE a harmony. Overall the annoying and the good balance each other out

Reminds me in tonality and song structure like a band along a similar timeline as The Devil Makes Three. They lean more bluegrass and folk compared to The Coral who captures an essence of new millenium post punk with other world influences, particularly French music with the use of those melodies utilizing the accordian. I dug it, a deep web tastemakers for sure.

Interesting album. I liked better than I thought I would.

Didn’t listen all the way through

I enjoyed this a decent amount.

Fun poppy vibe

Strokes fronted by Jim Morrison, it's fine but it ain't great. Some of it is oddly retro, like Goodbye, could be Herman Hermits era music.

Quite enjoyed this. The sound reminded me of a few different (and more current) bands, so their influence is clearly still present today.

I mean it's okay, it feels a bit manufactured and soulless but having said that it's catchy at times....Ill give it a 3 because I didn't hate it, but I just can't ever think that I will utter the phrase "oh let's listen to the coral album"

a decent enough 00s indie album but not a lot really caught my ear. the highlight here clearly is 'dreaming of you' and the rest i could really take or leave. the production wasn't my favorite, but wasn't awful. the vocalist's voice seems like it often gets compared to jim morrison or eric burdon, but for some reason is not as compelling a voice as either of theirs. it's not awful, but mostly it's pretty unremarkable.

I got pretty toe-tappy around Goodbye. The 'big track' on this being Dreaming of You, sounds like an OK Go track, while Simon Diamond, Goodbye & Calendars and Clocks would feel at home in a 70s playlist. The tracks are pretty varied stylistically. The album's so all over the place, I'll probably listen to some of those more 70s-style tracks on their own again, but I don't think I'll play the album back-to-back again as it doesn't feel like a cohesive listen.

Those magic mushrooms in Sefton Park again. On paper an update of the Bunnymen's scouseadelica sound is surely a good thing, but this is all over the shop and for every winning melody there's a throw away jokey track. 2.5 really but feeling generous.

My brother Greg likes The Coral a lot and also they have a great song called In the Morning (not on this) that when I would hum My Girl, my other brother Alastair thought I was humming that. They do sound alike. I thought this would be better but it was fine

More interesting than expected!

Another British band that I've never heard of on this list. I'm guessing they rode on the coattails of bands like the White Stripes and The Strokes. There are moments on this album that are amazing, doing things their contemporaries just couldn't. When it works, it works really well. Unfortunately they took it too far, into ludicrous territory, too often.

Wannabe 2000s Beatles, meh

I had The Thrills yesterday so quite similar review yesterday. This is fine and I remember listening to it when it came out, but not sure it really belongs in the list. Quite strong 60s vibes and some decent songs, but nothing massively interesting

Weird, but not in a way that moves me. Sounds deeply unserious, and I'm not convinced.

I don't think I've ever heard these guys before.

This is a well made album, with plenty of variety, change of pace, nuance, decent writing. That said, it's not really my sound, either.......

What a strange little album. It feels like that each track is a different band as there is so many styles of music on here. I knew the single of course but while it didn’t blow me away I quite enjoyed it

Huh. Not quite what I was expecting The Coral to sound like. Loads of weird and interesting influences, but apart from a couple tracks don't feel that the output really comes together as well as it could. 3.5

Though it is prog rock judging from the album cover, but sadly but luckily it's not...or is it? Maybe progressive in another way. But mostly it's quite vintage. Average. A bit repetitive non? well I mean apperantly there are noteworthy stuffs but ummm overall it's...a bit rock here, a bit punk there, can't believe it released in 2002, some of the sound reminds me of The Clash...slightly above 3/5.

Eh. Not bad, not great. Not worthy of the 1001 but at least it's not terrible.

Fun with good performances. A new band for me.

I really wanted to like this and I do but I wouldn't listen to it again. I might check out more of their albums though

Part of me wants to tell these lads to pick a lane and stick to it, but where's the fun in that? Ended up enjoying it. wouldn't be going into rotation though

This album was hard for me to rate, I listened to it a bunch of times and kept going back and forth on whether I like it or not. I've never heard of The Coral, they seem to have a good thing going but sometimes sail into annoying territory. I like the ska vibes but they sometimes go polka, I like the bass lines but then they just drop off, I like the twangy guitar but then it goes rattly, I like the vocals but then it's screaming. In the end, there were more bad songs than good. "Dreaming of You" and "Waiting for the Heartaches" are good, "Goodbye" and "Bad Man" are meh. I'm not overly impressed but it wasn't all bad, I'll give em a 2.75 for being from 2002 and being decent.

Decent indie rock album from another band I've never heard of. They have a pretty solid repertoire for a band launching their debut album on this one. They have a folksy playful sound that I is pretty unique. I didn't love anything I heard but I also didn't dislike anything either. Looks like The Coral have been pretty prolific following this release so maybe it's worth checking out a couple other hits to see what else they have in the bag. Always glad to be exposed to a new artist on 1001 and this is another solid entry from an unknown. I feel like The Coral would put on a very good live show. 3.12 stars

Entertaining and occasionally unique.

Decent but bit heavier than expected

Different. Not really my thing, but I see the allure.

# Playlist track - Goodbye # Notes - The opening track is really really bad. It sets this huge tension and suspense and breaks it with a super shitty chorus, I went into the album with a bad taste in my mouth. - I mean, there are a few interesting instrumentals here and there, like the guitars on "Shadow Fall" and "Goodbye", but it's otherwise pretty forgettable. - Giving it a point or two for the surprise, but it's hard for me to believe that this belongs on this list. - Cool, but don't go out of your way to listen to it.

an epitome of the "throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks" approach to writing music. quite a hit-and-miss fusion of folk/world music and garage rock with a hint of neo-psychedelia, full of musical experiments that sound fun on paper but end up feeling like mere iterations on established conventions. it has its moments, some songs like Goodbye and I Remember When slap, but I don't think i'll be thinking about this much. Actual rating is 7/10, or 3.5/5.

The only thing I knew about The Coral before was that their fourth album was produced by Portishead's Adrian Utley and Geoff Barrow. It was apparently that the creative spark that got Portishead to reunite a few years later. So it was a bit disappointing to discover that the generator didn't give me that album, but their debut one. That sounds harsher than I mean it to. I can see why Portishead would have been interested in The Coral. They share a love for krautrock bands like Can, which is always a good start. They were also influenced by Captain Beefheart, although I can't hear it in this album. There's enough here to keep me intrigued and make me want to hear a bit more. But there's not quite enough to make me into fan, at least based on one listen.

I felt like this album started pretty strong, but then it just kind of existed until the end. I thought the vocals and harmonies were nice. I think this album is middle of the road.

Kinda meh. Liked “Wildfire” a lot but otherwise pretty meh. Vocals were fine, music sounded fine, lyrics were fine. But that was also the problem everything was just fine nothing extraordinary. Not bad just meh.

That's not my taste in music. But ok.

Its fine I guess

It was ok. Kind of a ska vibe.

I already liked one song off this album and it's still the only song I'd play again

A right old 60s mix with noughties production. Neat

Bref, on commençait à sérieusement s'emmerder.

Not great - not terrible.

Decent but was genuinely surprised it was from 2002. Unlike say King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, they didn't put much freshness on the psychedelic '60s sound.

Wasn’t horrendous but very few songs really stood out to me

is nice 🙂👍

Aika perus suht modernin rokin kuuloinen levy. Vekkuli ja leikittelevä ajoittain. Hyviä kappaleita kyllä. Parhaat: Goodbye, Skeleton Key, Wildfire, Calenders And Clocks

Having loved this when it came out and having seen them support Oasis at Finsbury Park in 2002, I was fully ready to give it 5 stars. It's definitely lost some of It's magic. Maybe it was the time and surrounding music scene that made me more enthusiastic about it or maybe my tastes changed. Still, 5 scouse stoners having a lovely stoned time in the studio, I could never dislike it.

Thought there'd be more i enjoyed about this album but sadly disappointed

Meh…

i like it:)

The music and songwriting is competent, but the whole thing just feels like a novelty album that you'd play at a Halloween party.

No my genre

An eclectic mix of psych laced indie rock. Pretty good time and some fun performances.

It’sssssssssssss fine.

Albumi #68, 04.10.2024 The Coralin debyyttialbumi vuodelta 2002.

Never heard of this band/album before today, and IMO this record does a successful job at being weird and experimental, but not overly so to the point where it strays into the territory of being annoying. It's pretty out there, yes, but there is a tasty flow running underneath it all.

Huh, weird band and weird to have not heard of them. This was about the time I was latching on to the yeah yeah yeahs and rilo Kiley, so I'm surprised these guys didn't make my feed but maybe those algorithms weren't very robust yet? Maybe I listened to too much Eminem then? And were those lyrics about pirates I heard?

3/5 It's ok. Not groundbreaking, but far from terrible. Spanish Main 2/5 I Remember When 3/5 Shadows Fall 4/5 Dreaming of You 3/5 Simon Diamond 3.5/5 Goodbye 3.5/5 Waiting for the Heartaches 3/5 Skeleton Key 2.5/5 Wildfire 4.5/5 (FAV) Bad Man 2.5/5 Calendars and Clocks 2/5 (LEAST FAV)

I mean, I have a soft spot for this type of alternative rock. Still, it’s very cliche without much substance.

i liked this album - it was a little odd, but still pretty catchy.

Nice light wait rocky.

British indie 60s psychadelia throwback. It's fine but unremarkable

Short, not very memorable. Nice guitar parts and rythms but they blended into a relatively monotonous musical landscape. Favorite songs were: 2. I Remember When 4. Dreaming of You 5/10

Unfortunately, this album is not that and the rest of it is more of a psychedelic folk rock album. Still, the highlights of this album more than make up for the lowlights and it's well worth checking out for anybody who wants to hear some stuff they've never heard before

JFC. More generic folk psychedlica.

This was an interesting jangle pop group out of England that is worth investigating.

Aina mukava löytää kohtuullisen tuoreita uusia tuttavuuksia, joita on mukava kuunnella.

Not terrible, but not my thing. Sort get the impression that, if BBT's Footprints on the Moon formed a semi serious ska band, this would be it.

Allt í lagi folkrokk. Má alveg hlusta aftur á þetta.

Instrumentally sounds really quite good, but the lyrics and songwriting I didn't love as much 🤷

No info in the wiki here but a quick mention on apple reveals yet another British band. And, to be fair, another instance of some not bad British music. It’s one thing when it’s the same stuff over and over but this felt fresh while also being distinctly British. I felt that most highlighted on Waiting for the Heartaches.

Good band bit like the Las but not as good.

Can’t decide if it wants to be a landfill indie record or a quirky pirate concept album - I mean this as both an insult and a compliment. Dreaming of You still slaps

This probably merits another listen, but the first listen didn’t really hook me.

Fun and eclectic listen. Liked Waiting for the Heartaches to Come. Also liked the ties and references to the sea that kept recurring.

I don't care for pirate music and sea shanties, but then also having that mixed with rock, ska, reggae?? It quickly turned annoying at some points, but then it also had some good moments so I'm not quite sure how I feel about it. Favorites: "I Remember When", "Dreaming of You", "Waiting for the Heartaches"

Eh to me this isn't as bad as some others are claiming, however it isn't something that I would want to listen to regularly. Meh overall.

Brit, psych rock that is unoffending to the ears.

Not really a fan. It's not terrible but kind of annoying to me.

The vocals in the first song made me think this might be a Steven Tyler side project that I'd never heard of. Turns out that was not the case. This is the very definition of average.

It's fine. It's vaguely promising - and apparently they have now created some weirdo masterpieces that match up to the promise of this album. But this album never grabbed me enough to get me to invest in future efforts. It has good bits.

This is the first band on this list I haven't heard of before AND ALSO liked the album. This is exactly what I was hoping this list would be like, and have thus far been quite disappointed. This was fucking FUN! I really don't think it belongs on a list of albums you must hear before you die, but I don't want to diminish how much I enjoyed this album. I appreciate the eclectic mix of styles and am reminded of how I felt listening to bands like Panic! at the Disco, Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly , and My Chemical Romance for the first time. They're all doing something somewhat new with well-founded historical precedent in a way that blends nicely and makes me want to find the music that inspired this. 3.5

not disappointed, not impressed

Alright... Dreaming of you is a great song tho.

3.3. Great first half. Jim Morrison/Alex Turner sound from lead singer

I Remember When // Dreaming of You //

Never heard of these guys. Will check them out. This is cool. Truly never heard of this before. Very interesting. Reminds me of gypsy-band.

I think this would be great background music, but I don't think I could really get into it hardcore.

This is quite literally the most basic music I've ever heard. Do these people know that they have to put some thought into writing a song? This is a bad, bad album.

What an interesting album, I feel like my inevitable 3 star rating is going to obscure how strange this one is. This is the 2002 debut album from a British rock band. This came out in the post-Britpop alt rock age. At times it sounds fairly modern, but more often it really sounds like a '60s British psychedelic rock album. Like I'm getting real The Zombies energy from this (but with a bit more of a gruff sounding singer). The sound is weird and wavering and jumps around quite a bit, even within songs. I don't know enough about music to know why, but a lot of the guitar riffs sound old (for instance on "Goodbye"). I actually wanted to like this a bit more than I did, but it falls a little flat for me. The weirdness is cool, but there's just not a ton that stands out to really hook me. The exception is probably "Dreaming of You" (which seems to be their most popular song by quite a bit), which is strange and catchy all in one. Otherwise there's quite a few enjoyable songs, but I just doubt this will stick with me much. It also loses a bit of steam near the end, even though it's a pretty short album. I respect them going for a very different sound than what was prevailing at the time though, and one that calls back to a prior age of great music. Also, the album cover is just as strange as the music, there's a lot going on there that I won't try to parse out. Favorite song: Dreaming of You Other: I Remember When, Simon Diamond, Goodbye, Waiting for the Heartaches, Wildfire, Calendars and Clocks 7/25/24

Yeah not massively my thing! Just quite jaunty Brit pop innit. Totally fine

That surprised me! I was ready for some proper indie landfill but it was pretty good. I thought the lead singer sounded like the guy from the Zutons, and actually thought they generally had similarities, looked them up and they are also from the Liverpool area.

Not really innovative, somewhat good to vibe with. The definition of mid.

Charming but unnecessary for this list. Not really much to say about it. Standard rock sound and ingredients. Most interesting things about this album is probably the cover art.

Songs a bit hit or miss for me, but overall okay

I was working on a project outside and I actually let this play through just into a 3rd turn. It grew on me a little, I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Really liked track 2 and track 1 while a little repetitive was ok too. 2.75/5

110% Hipster Approved and maybe you’re just not cool enough to get this. Certainly an interesting listen and I liked the creativity, quirkiness and mix of styles. And a pirate song with skeleton key? Sure. Not sure I’ll find the need to come back to this but ya never know. 2.75

The Coral opens very strong and slowly fades. By I Remember When I was thinking could this be another surprise 5 star album. At its best, it’s very good. But the lows are low. I.e Bad Man. 6.4/10

Never heard of The Coral. Maybe this has too much throwback to styles of 60s rock to truly breakthrough in the 2000s. This is an interesting listen. I’m listening to it again and already appreciating this album more upon second listening.

A fun album with Standouts in I Remember When, Simon Diamond, and Waiting For The Heartache.

I see a lot of people hating on this but it isn’t terrible. I mean it certainly isn’t MY cup of tea but it’s not bad by any means. The idea of mixing the styles of 60’s rock and sea shanties is something I haven’t seen before. It knows what it wants to do and does it.

Of all the 2002 rock albums to put on the list, this one was picked? Instead of Turn on the Bright Lights??? Ridiculous… Gonna go make my own list, with blackjack and hookers

strong start, weak finish

Good not great. Started off rough (read: dad rock)

#30 - Decent early Brit rock with quite original layers

Catchy, fun, upbeat songs. In addition to sounding like a lot of British bands from this time, there’s a mix of other influences — some Spanish guitar here, a little polka bounce there. That sort of thing can feel like musical cosplaying to me and I don’t always love it. But this was enjoyable more often than not.

I think the first half of this album is much better than the second. Pretty good tho but nothing really exceptional.

It's all right. 'Dreaming of You' is a really fantastic song, far and away the highlight of the album. That's not to say the other songs are bad, they're just not great. They're fine. FAVORITE SONGS - Dreaming of You - I Remember When 3/5

This was ok - I might gone back to it, I might not? Some interesting bits, but nothing really wowed me

ok, nothing special

3 stars of confusion

Enjoyed the listening

Good album. I liked his voice. I'm not sure I was really into a few of the songs. Maybe I'll try listening again

Very fun album. Really enjoyed it.

Light bouncy indie psychedelic tunes. Fun and fine.

Another British band I've never heard of. Entertaining for the most part. An extra star for Simon Diamond because I have a Chug dog named Simon. He's been a best friend for a long time. He loves bed.

Fine, nothing crazy

I used to really like the Coral and this is a decent album. I prefer the invisible invasion. This is probably a 3.5.

teetering on 3 and 4 but i think i’ll leave it with a high 3. grew on me as the album went on

Loved this album in 2002, it's not aged very well though

I like this album, but there isn’t anything here that couldn’t have been done forty years prior. The Coral is an album the longs for a past that has long since matured. There isn’t anything wrong with any of the songs. Lyrics, instrumentation, and writing are all good. I’ll give it an extra bump in quality for the vocal performance. James Skelly has a unique voice that makes this album tolerable. 3/5

Dreaming of you song

It was fun at first but got boring rather quickly. Liked the first two songs, Skeleton Key and Waiting for the Heartaches

The Coral is an interesting work. It's like having a Britpop band working with a salsa guy behind closed doors, giving them some mild ayahuasca, and seeing what comes out of it. Some songs were interesting, but others... mmm maybe they ran out of ideas before knowing how to finish it. Bottomline, I think it was a positive experience.

I've tried to get into these before, a very trusted friend was into them when it came out which surprised me, because I couldn't see what set them apart from much of the indie guitar stuff of the early 00s. And to top it all I couldn't shake the feeling I'd heard it all before (to much) from Ocean Colour Scene a few years earlier. A few friends I have a regular music chat vid call with were also lauding then again recently so I gave it a spin a few months back too. My opinion on this listen remains mostly unchanged. I guess this is just a blind spot for me. Shadows Fall was mildly diverting. As was Simon Diamond. Goodbye is a strong 60s Byrds jangle along. I am at least understanding why my friend was so keen, and they're better than OCS. The big single was everywhere of course, and it's fine. I like a lot of Bill Ryder-Jones work now though. A very mid 3, I guess? I don't dislike any of this, I just wouldn't choose to put it on. Definitely the most piratey record since Adam Ant, and for that a fun listen.

Interesting listen. I hear a lot of The Jam in this record mixed with some 60s rock and roll... I could definitely see this rippin' in a dive bar. They've got a good feel, guitar tone is great (reminds me of Nancy Sinantra's Bang Bang - that type of guitar tone), vocals are alright. Nothing great, but as I mentioned, would sound great in a high energy bar show. 👍 COOL!

I believe the Coral to be one of the better bands from the 00’s, and pretty underrated, this is a good indie rock album and deserves its place on the list, has its flaws though and not one I really come back to.

Some simple rock with country influences. So vanilla that I'm questioning it being part of the 1001. Must have been running out of ideas.

Interesting little thing, a bit like Cat Empire meets Liverpool folk pop
