Reviews (page 2 of 13)

- Stevie is such a genius - Apparently he played every instrument on this album just about - The lyrics, the sound, and the feeling he creates had me creating my own visions in my mind. As corny as that sounds. - I absolutely loved "Living for the City" it tells a great story of 1970s america and the current issues at the time. I had a movie playing in my head throughout the duration of the song. - I think for what it is, this album is a 10/10 - Another grateful listen

it's stevie fucking wonder. the man has a golden voice. one of history's most talented artists. visions is probably my favorite but it's hard to pick a favorite, both here and, for me, in general

I'd only ever heard "Living For the City" and "Higher Ground" as standalone tracks from playlists or best-ofs. Hearing them in their full context is incredible. Genius stuff

Just enough funk for the city

Me encantaron absolutamente todas las rolas

The run of albums this man did at this time - from music of my mind to songs in the key. Interesting to see how many are in this list. I would easily accept all 5. Know it’s somewhat trendy maybe to big up his early seventies period, but that’s because it’s such a blend of soul, funk, pop, adult contemporary, whatever he damn wanted. It’s fun, it’s deep, it’s mature, social and bitting at times, beautiful at others. This is such a spotless album. He was essentially a one man band throughout this time, writer, producer, near enough playing everything. 5 Star

After the three song combo of living, golden lady, and higher ground, it was really a question of how this can be less than 5 stars. I was not able to come up with an answer to that question, especially after all in love and don't you worry. Exemplary high water mark on this list.

FINALLY got a Stevie album, and predictably its from the period where everything he did was fire. Most of his career is that period, but this is just peak. Probably the easiest ]/ least controversial 5 we've gotten so far.

I have been waiting for this. Stevie Wonder is a genius and there is truly not a song I can say that I don't enjoy from this album, or him in general.

Perfect album. A masterpiece.

Back to back Stevie wonder albums and I couldn’t be happier. This album has some killer tracks that even my kids weee jamming to. Transcending time is a telltale sign that you have a timeless album

"All In Love Is Fair" is fantastic

In my opinion Stevie Wonder is right up there with Bob Dylan and the songwriting team of Lennon and McCartney. Starting with the album before this, Talking Book, he had a four album run of pure genius. Funk / Soul at its best.

If you offer me a choice network this and Thriller I'll take this every time. What an astonishing thing this is, from the angry Living for the City, to the beautiful Golden Lady. Every song a winner. No skips, all gold.

10/10. I hadn’t listened to a Stevie Wonder album in full until now. This was a mistake. Back to back to back perfection from track to track. And he was just 23 when he made this? His SIXTEENTH album? Prodigy.

Even the sketches and throwaway latin piano are tight. Peak Stevie, peak 70s, peak music. Almost unbearably good.

Stevie Wonder has made so many songs, which everybody now. If you like soul, you will like his music. And I like it.

Stevie Wonder is one of those musicians you can tell becomes a part of his music as he plays. His craftsmanship is beautiful

Feels like an easy 5 stars!

A bit jazzy for me, but clearly genius.

I’ll have to go back to his other album because I liked this one a lot!

Love me some drums, some clean bass and vocals. Maybe missing a little more synthesizer, a little more electronics, for my tastes. 4.9/5 tho.

STEVIE WONDER’S A MUSICAL GENIUS

I'm a big fan of this album, and I like it a lot more than Songs in the Key of Life! Quite varied and rich harmony plus well-written lyrics

This is really a great album

Stevie Wonder was just one of those guys who was built different, and his 70’s run is one of the best in all musicdom.

Amazing

One of my favorite albums - Stevie can really do no wrong

I think he has a good voice And the songs requires good skill and control

First time listening to a Stevie Wonder album - yeah! I know! Obviously listened to his songs before but never a studio album and boy oh boy this one was great. Great mix of funk and soul. Love it.

It’s five stars buddy

What an album

Today is the first day of my life PI (post Innervisions) and the sun looks brighter, the birds sing louder and everything seems like it might just be alright

A easy listen, Classic Stevie Wonder. Not as funky as I'd like but I have no other notes 4.9/5

Stevie operating in rarefied air. Doing it all.

Either I've never heard this version of Living For The City or I just haven't been paying attention...

music is love

Stevie Wonder is a genius, and I didn't even realise how many of the instruments he played on this album until I read about it today. He blends styles so easily and writes songs that are catchy, soulful and funky but also extremely socially conscious. One I could listen to a second time immediately, and I probably will, actually

Wooooo!!

If you want to feel truly, deeply humbled, think about the fact that Stevie Wonder put this out when he was 23, it was his sixteenth album by that point, and his best two albums were still yet to come. You're welcome.

Listened in the car and on a walk. Wow what an incredible album. Really showcases Stevie's amazing singing voice. It's also incredible to think that this is his 16th album and it's as perfect as this. Just amazing.

Completamente increíble.

still fresh in 2026

High bar for Stevie wonder but a softer 5 given a couple of snoozers like Visions and He's Misstra Know-it-all. Undisputed gold on every other track though

Yeah - hot take: this is a truly excellent album. You heard it here first, folks.

So good. Absolute fire the whole way through. When the revolution comes it should be Stevie Wonder who tells Jacob Collier to face the wall. Also SW is such an underrated drummer wtf.

Stevie Wonder is the best

we so UP. it's stevie. it's miracle run stevie. 4.7-5. let's keep it pushing. (related but unrelated) it's crazy how much Michael and quincy took the motown blueprint to its logical extreme. (actually related) i activate like drake in the sprite commercial the second stevie starts ripping on the harmonica. plus the groove that he locks in on living for the city + higher ground >>>>>>>>>>. genuinely batshit drums're technically his 3rd best instrument. and the lyrics (oh my god the lyrics). absolute gem: "to see the heaven in your eyes is not so far, 'cause I'm not afraid to try and go it." anyway. good album. looking forward to being annoying about "evil" when music of my mind comes up. if it doesn't i riot.

The introductory track reminded me of the Sims 1 soundtrack, so I knew I was in for a pleasant listen. GREAT album, excellent listen. I didn't know I needed this album in my life, but now I don't know how I lived so long without listening to it.

Another immaculate album from Stevie Wonder. The instrumentation/performances are unbelievable, as are the melodies. Finally, Stevie's usual great storytelling is also on display here. If you don't have the time to listen to a double album like Song in the Key of Life, this one is almost as good, and gets you there in half the time. 5.0/5.0: Iconic

fantastic album, cant go wrong with stevie

For me, first masterpiece of this project. It's wild that Wonder wrote and played almost every instrument himself. The album has a spontaneity and playfulness to it, love the way the measures were constantly moving and shifting, hard to zone out even for a second. I'm also a sucker for that rhodes piano sound. The moog bass is all over this too, which was a surprise to me - had no idea moogs were being used this early. "Too High" is unlike anything else on the album which made for a cool intro, I really dug the psychedelic funk energy it brought to the table. But the peaks for me were "Living for the City," "Higher Ground," and "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing." Hard to pick a favorite between the three. The way "Living for the City" closes with Wonder shifting into that hoarse, raspy, preacher-like vocal timbre is so good. And apparently that riff on "Higher Ground" is a clavinet run through a wah pedal? DOPE. This one's going in the regular rotation and has me excited to dig into the rest of his classics run, which it looks like we'll be visiting at some point on this list. Some fun facts I read about while listening: - Wonder was the first Black artist to win the Grammy for Album of the Year... feels way overdue. - Shortly after this album dropped he was nearly killed in a car accident and spent several days in a coma. - "Living for the City" was apparently recorded in a single day, kind of unbelievable considering he wrote and played all the parts.

9/10 Stevie Wonder siendo un prodigio de la música como siempre

Es un discazo tremendo, no hay con que darle. Tiene 7 temas top de los 9 que contiene el disco.

Always been a big Stevie Wonder fan, but this was my first time listening to this album all the way through. So good, big fan. Had a couple of my favorites of his and then everything else was great too. Very political, and a lot of funk. Highlights: "Living For The City", "Higher Ground" and "He's a Misstra Know-It-All"

This Stevie Wonder guy is gonna go places!

What heaven will sound like, music has never had more soul feeling or emotion. Doesn't need a ridiculous array of instruments to make the sound complex rich and varied, but every part is interesting unique and special. Every song is a masterpiece, his greatest album by far. Best song - golden lady

Day 232 He’s almost supernaturally good isn’t he? Highlights Living for the city Higher ground Jesus children of America

Bro cooked with this one

me encanto!’

Elite funk of all time. Stevie is just the goat and knows exactly what he’s doing here. It’s really amazing to listen through and hear the cohesive but versatile sounds all around the album. I loved the songs I knew and found new songs to add on to a playlist or two and will for sure be listening to again in the near future. The progressions in these songs are wonderful and truly masterful in all facets.

Haven´t listened to him before! Good music 💙

Chaque fois un plaisir, chaque fois une nouvelle découverte! Fantastique!

This is one of the best albums I have ever listened to.

Just an excellent and excited album. Great lineup and several perfect gems

SSX 3 mentioned!

What a phenomenal record. Vocals are smooth and dynamic, with a lovely tremor. Musicianship is unreal across the board, and this record really has a sense of place and time. Came out during a time of transition and strife, and you can feel the tug of war between hope and despair.

Awesome

Didn't know Stevie Wonder made such fire music

Too high - Very funky first track. I had to get used to his voice for a second, but I quickly started to feel the funk and move my body along the rhythm. Visions - nice tonal shift, I think it's a pretty well written song, with enough variation to keep it interesting. Balancing on the verge of easy and attentive listening. Living for the city - longest track on the album. Really love the vocals and bass on this track. The drums have this rolling along type vibe which I like. Not a fan of the synth chorus melody, but it's not a major part of the song. When the song devolves into this soundscape of a man getting arrested, it kind of took me out if it, but I understand the meaning. Golden lady - easy listening, nice rhythm, GREAT organ piece Higher ground - YES, just yes. Jesus children of america - pretty okay, but not super special. All in love is fair - least favorite so far, feels a bit contrived. Nice vocals though Dont you worry bout a thing - this one feels cheeky in a good way, it's a fun song, but not my favorite. He's misstra know-it-all - good song, strong vocals, but not as deep as the first few songs that I liked more

Apparently I like Stevie Wonder. Who knew! Anyway. This was lovely. Left me wanting more. 5 stars!

I loved it! 4.5

Another example of Wonder's genius, particularly during this time period. Lots of good stuff in here.

Easy listening, have some of the songs on vinyl, and I always love a good Stevie wonder project. 5/5

Such an incredible album about which I was not fully aware before, beyond the obvious singles. A lot better than some of the pop-laden ditties that followed. I am not sure there is a bad track on the album. The last track comes closest to feeling "off", but even it is not too bad. Really, really enjoyed this one.

Listened to an actual album after a while and may i add, that this was a masterpiece ! 5/5 loved that the two songs at the beginning made flow for actual fire songs . I loved ‘living for the city’ ,’golden lady” , ‘Jesus children of america ‘ and ‘don’t you worry ‘Bout a thing’ . And higher ground had an amazing intro . Loved the outro as well. Overall a nice album and would def listen to it again. Thanks .

Innervisions is the third chapter of Stevie Wonder's incredible run at Tamla/Motown in the early and mid-70s, and easily my favorite of the five. it's a succinct encapsulation of Wonder's view on American life in 1973, with grim depictions of drug abuse ("Too High"), systemic racism ("Living for the City"), Nixon ("He's Misstra Know-It-All") and other stark subject matter. the almost-title-track "Visions" contrasts Wonder's vision of a bright, harmonious future with his acceptance of the harsh realities of life as it actually was at the time (and may still be, in some ways). helping us to digest these very heavy messages is Wonder's trademark songwriting panache. there's so many incredible details: the dizzying triads moving on top of that bass pedal in the "doo-doo-doo" section of "Too High", the descending seventh cliche to end them all on "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing", the rollicking thump from the rhythm section on "Higher Ground". once again, Wonder multitracked nearly every instrumental part on a lot of these songs, and it never ceases to amaze me just how high his abilities were on all of them, not just his trademark keys. if you don't like Innervisions, I can't trust you! 10/10.

C'mon!!!!! Stevie during his classic period is unbeatable. This is my favorite Stevie album.

i actually prefer this one than 'songs in the key of life'

Damn that was a great album

16 albums in and finally in his classic period. Stevie is an all time great. Love Living For The City and Higher Ground.

What a voice, Funky, and Soul, love this album, some real bangers on here, my favourite SW album, this man is sheer class🎶

Just magnificent

Timeless.

stone-cold classic, an all-time great at his artistic peak, what more can you say

I love Stevie Wonder. I don't even need to listen to the album to know this gets a 5 from me. I liked the other album I've listened of his a bit better, but this one still rocked. Saved a song, but would go and listen to the album in general again.

fucking amazing

I love Stevie wonders voice I could listen to him sing forever

First ever Stevie Wonder Album Surprised by the sound - was expecting Motown but hearing almost elements of folk or rock in amongst it which I love! The track Visions is great! Living for the City added to playlist! Higher Ground is a banger of a track, so surprised this is Stevie Wonder, I’d never have guessed it! Don’t you worry bout a thing is the only song I recognised. Funk, rock, soul all laid into one record! But each track gels so well with the next! What a voice he has! 100% a record I’ll revisit! Great first album of this list for me! Very uplifting!

It’s Stevie Wonder.

Awesome

Fantastiske melodilinjer. Sterkt album fra start til slutt.

great stuff. this is the first time I've listened to any amount of his music. before this it was just the occasional track on the radio. so, yeah, great stuff

This is the first album i will play for my future baby

wow stevie wonder just wow. I had heard about him but never list to his music this properly, Innervisions album is what i felt funk and as i googled it shows, its a funk and progressive soul masterpiece..... indeed it is a masterpiece, My favourite song of the album have to be Living in the city and no.2 will be "He’s misstra know‐it‐all".. But damn each song has its own vibe. Higher Ground is the best hehe :)

I pity the fool who hasn't heard this album.

Overall a gem. It has a blemish or two (the skit in the middle of Living for the City being an example of one) that distracts. But otherwise, this is 5-star album.

A phenomenal album. I never listen to full Stevie at a time and now I have to wonder why that is and what's wrong with me . Living for the city is still one of my all time favorite songs

Jeg er svak for progressive soul og dette albumet er helt konge. Er forresten introen til «Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing» introen til Sex and the City?

Phenomenal album I loved every song it really did nothing for me

Truly a no skip album. Love Stevie Wonder

All killer no filler, one of the all time great albums from the format’s golden age. The mid point of Stevie’s imperial phase - how many artists get that in the second decade of fame? Michael Jackson and that’s it…. Hard to fault this recording at all - Stevie and his two professor longhairs with the synths.

A favourite. I spun it 3 times.

This is probably the Stevie Wonder album that I am the most familiar with, and while I don't know all of his discography, I wouldn't be surprised if this was his best or at least most focused. The synth bass that can be heard on the first track and others reminds me of Herbie Hancock (watermelon man); I'm sure they were inspiring each other in this era of abundant musical innovation. The slower ballads reminds me of Cleo soul's music (contemporary R&B artist, Ray is familiar), and I have no doubt she was inspired by Stevie as well all are. I was especially familiar with golden lady, higher ground, and living for the city, but I've forgotten how great the rest of the tracks are. Too high is my new favorite again. Very Stevie wonder in the way it alternates from a groove to a dissonant jazzy melody. I can think of any other songs where he does something similar. ( Sir Duke for example, has a jazzy melody in unison before it gets into its main groove). 9/10

5 stars. Great ALL the way through. "Living for the City" and, especially, "Higher Ground" have (unfairly) lost (for me) a *little* of their sheen, from having been played on the radio so much, especially in the early years. I think I love all 7 of the OTHER songs on the album even more than those 2 hits (actually, sorry, AI reminds me that "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing" was also a minor hit - but not as big as the other 2 hits, and I don't remember hearing it on the radio all that often). Anyway, back to the album: the first two tracks start off the album nicely with an introspective mood, and then the rest of the album just keeps laying down one great song after another. And, ok, you know, I HAVE to give loving salute here to my dear mother (Mombo), because she's why I know this album so well. She bought all of Stevie's great mid-'70s albums, and we heard them fairly often at our house, and came to know them and love them, thanks to her. So, thanks, Mom! :) Ok, I know I'm not saying a lot about the music itself. It's both complex and catchy; it holds up to MANY repeated listens, and gets better with time (like a fine wine, lol). The more you listen, the more you hear and appreciate Stevie's genius, the depth and variety and perfection, and the cumulative greatness of the songs on this album.

It's either this or Songs In The Key Of Life that's Stevie's best album. Working in this one's favor: there are no weak links, it feels like a consistent story, almost a musical. Innervisions inspires just that; it makes you imagine scenes, characters, visions. Like with What's Goin On, I'm amazed that there can be elevated music that is also so immediately accessible and enjoyable. I have no critiques, only gratitude

Yeah goat

Excellent album. Highlights: Too High, Living For The City, Golden Lady, Higher Ground, All In Love Is Fair and Don’t You Worry ‘Bout A Thing. Solid 5

Chef's kiss. This album is stacked

Excellent album. Had a great time listening to it, I think I ended up going through the whole thing around 3-4 times. I'd heard some of the songs before but the whole thing as an experience was even better.

Discazo 5/5

Another amazing album and all-time favorite.

Really enjoyed this album, some really groovy clavs n synths. Living for the city is unreal. Potentially enjoyed more than songs in the key of life, we shall see which one i come back to

if this album doesn't just make you happy out of nowhere no matter what, then you don't understand music imo

totally digging this holy moly. yeah.

I think my whole life I've actually just been searching for Stevie Wonder.

Perfect album.

Super Dope

Heel nice

5/5. An easy 5 IMO and it’s not even the best Stevie Wonder album on this list. Just front to back bangers and jams on this thing that are injected with funk. One of those albums where when listening to it you can feel the fun that the artist had recording it. This thing is just bursting with personality, even with some of its darker lyrical themes.

On 'Innervisions', Stevie Wonder took everything he learned from 'Talking Book' and took it to the next level. The soul/funk is far more developed on this record, and Wonder was diversifying his lyrical content outside mere romantic ballads to include songs about the city's seedy underbelly and its racially-driven damage on a young man ('Living For the City), reincarnation ('Higher Ground') and deceitful individuals ('He's Misstra Know-It-All'). The production on 'Innervisions' is outstanding. Wonder makes use of his Fender Rhodes electric piano and T.O.N.T.O. synthesiser to great effect across this entire record, solidifying his case as one of the finest and most innovative players to keep the piano stool warm. He also plays all the drum parts and manages the Moog bass on most songs. It's such a dense and multilayered sounding record that you often forget it's mostly Wonder on his own. There's session musicians here and there adding small vocal, guitar, keyboard snd bass flourishes here and there, but it's mostly Wonder driving 'Innervisions' along. Remarkable. The songs are simply genius. Wonder's confidence oozes through the songs, and it's clear by this point that he's completely shed his youthful "Little Stevie Wonder" Motown persona, revealing a mature, confident artist with a firm point to prove. With a record a good as Innervisions, you'd forgive Wonder for never being able to top it, and yet he would top it three years later. If we're talking about a moment in musical history where funk and soul truly started to peak, it's probably when 'Innervisions' was released. Stevie Wonder truly reached 'higher ground' with this record, and it's considered highly influential on the further development of African-American artists. Michael Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie, Bruno Mars, Pharell Williams....Stevie showed all of them the path to greater success: by being fearless, uncompromising and always open to innovation and change. Best songs: Too High, Living For the City, Golden Lady, Higher Ground, All In Love Is Fair, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, He's Misstra Know-It-All

I love Stevie Wonder, some of my favorite songs of his are off this album. Higher Ground and Golden Lady are 10/10s, but I wouldn’t say this is up to Songs in the Key of Life. That is a straight up 10/10, this I would say is still like 9/10, so I’m rounding up to 5 stars

Amazing.

Interesting. I loved it!!!!

Classic Stevie! Sadly, the lyrical picture he was painting in 1973, hasn't improved much 50+ years later. Liked Songs Added Too High Living For The City Higher Ground Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing

stevie wonder always a 10/10

Beautifully sung, great tunes and at least a couple of classics. I think I have to give a 5.

If you don't even as much as like this album, then you have no heart, no soul, no being. 10 stars out of 5 for me.

One of the best of Stevie’s classic period

It was nice, funky

STEVIE WONDER LETS GOOOOOO!!!! TWO HEATERS IN A ROW!!!! He unequivocally has the sauce, there's really no denying it. After so, so, so much Br*tish *slop* these past two days have been a breath of fresh air.

“Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing” will always make me cry and feel a way. this album is really a mark of his spiritual journey. he really steps into authorship of his inner life. this album is full of joy BUT it’s joy that acknowledges suffering without being consumed by it.

Though I would not call Innervisions Stevie Wonder’s greatest record, since most of its songs do not quite reach the heights of Songs in the Key of Life (not talking about you, Higher Ground) or hit something personal for me like Fulfillingness’ First Finale, it is still a Stevie Wonder record. You would have to be not only blind but deaf to call it anything other than an all-time classic.

My second Stevie Wonder album from the list, and one I was very excited to listen to. I didn't think I'd ever heard the entire thing, and after listening I'm certain I haven't. Overall I really enjoyed it. The songs I already loved from the record, Living For The City and Higher Ground, were the absolute standouts. But I also very much liked Too High, Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing, and He's Mistra Know-It-All. The only thing that makes me not sure whether this will be a four or five star album are two of the slower songs, Visions and Golden Lady. These felt very paint by numbers to me and I found them somewhat boring. The other slower ones had some interesting musical parts that made me more interested. I look forward to more of his albums on the list, as I assume there will be at least one or two others.

Claasc

I was very late discovering Stevie Wonder. I knew he was a talented musician who’d written some big hits but it wasn’t until I listened to Innervisions, followed by everything else in this incredible five album run, that I realised that he is a true genius. Not a single wrong step on this record, which ranges from upbeat Motown and funk to some absolutely beautiful ballads, covering everything from love to inequality and political injustice. Every song - from Too High to Misstra Know-it-All - is essential, making it one of the greatest albums of the 70s, and only second to Songs in the Key of Life, which is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Part of the best 4-record run of all time.

Such an incredible album!

Love love love

I wasn’t as immediately sold on this as I was on Fulfillingness’ First Finale, but a second listen solidified it as another 5. I may have to revisit Talking Book…I guess it took a little bit of time for Stevie Wonder to grow on me. Anyway, this album is so smooth and pleasant sounding, but also has deep and soulful songs and good variety. Must-listen #284.

This album is so good... bangers from start to finish. Absolute genius.

I don’t use the term lightly. Stevie Wonder is a musical genius. His sense of harmony is something that will be studied for decades to come. I can’t help but rate anything by him a 5.

LOADS of great songs on this album. A fun listen.

So good want to listen again straight away

love him

didn’t listen to the whole thing but definitely have heard it before and i KNOW it’s a 5/5

Kind of moodier than my preferred Stevie wonder album (songs in the key of life) but Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing alone makes this a masterpiece

instant 5, already heard this with the AM top 100 and have been back to it a few times since highlights: golden lady, dont you worry bout a thing 5

It’s Stevie Wonder, how can you not love it?

Heeeerlijk! Can you image trouwens dat moderne popmuziek zoveel akkoorden gebruikt? Wat een armoe! Liefde voor de manier waarop golden lady gezongen is/galm!!! Het klinkt zo ontzettend goed.

Anthony Kiedophile or whatever his name is can go find someone else's music to cover, the original Higher Ground is much better. Red Hot Chili Peppers, more like Lukewarm Bell Peppers. Anyways, Stevie Wonder just isn't a hateable artist. Nobody's going to say "I hate Stevie Wonder's music." It's just not possible unless you hate fun, pianos, amazing chord structures, social commentary, great singing, or some or all of the above.

“Innervisions” is—well, simply a good Stevie Wonder album. His voice is great as always. I like the funk grooves as well as the harmonic structures of the songs, some of which (“Too High,” “Higher Ground”) are outstanding and the others are at least good. For me, he could step on the gas a bit more overall, but that's criticism at a pretty high level, of course. Besides, through the one album per day project, I'm learning that most listeners apparently like it quieter than I do. Can't complain about that. For me, it's 4.5 stars.

Second Stevie Wonder album to come through and I liked this one better than Talking Book. "Higher Ground" was my favorite of the album, but "Living for the City", "Golden Lady", and "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thang" were also standouts. Wonder's jazz/R&B stylings are so unique!

A great Stevie wonder album. Easy listen and a unique sound

Guys its Stevie Wonder what more can I say. His voice alone made my day let alone all the production. This is one of the best albums my ears were lucky enough to gaze upon. This is a must listen to for anyone.

If it is possible to award an album 6 out of 5 then this is the album. Too high is a magnificent abrasive foot stopper. Visions is melodic and haunting. Living for the city is an all time classic with a message that still resonates. Golden lady is a song which always brings a smile, so joyous. To cap it all off dont you worry about a thing which is possibly his best work. The beatles are to the 60s what stevie wonder is to the 70s and there is no higher compliment.

My favorite so far

Love Stevie but have never heard this whole album before. Love that this was put out when i was three years old but is still so relevant. Yes, would buy this album! Loved the harmonica on the first song. Five stars

fantastic album, didn’t even notice when it was the next song they blend together seamlessly

stevie wonder is a vessel for instruments to truly express themselves. while he has more talent in his left foot that most, you hear a connection between him and his music makers that transcends understanding (at least mine). favorites: living for the city, golden lady, jesus children of america

Hah. One of my all-time favorite records. I have been obsessed with this record since discovering it in college, in the early 2000s, and I remain obsessed now.

Of the three Stevie Wonder albums from this era that I'm familiar with (this, Talking Book, and Songs in the Key of Life), this is the one that I'm least fond of, but it's still absolutely great. Can't say one track is a real stand out for me the way "Next Time I Fall In Love" or "Talk to God" is from those other albums, but I pretty much like all the tracks here as well. Absolutely shocking that he was TWENTY THREE YEARS OLD when this came out, and devastatingly shocking that this was his SIXTEENTH ALBUM. It makes no sense. For that alone I will bump this up to five stars.

Güd. Succinct and real criticisms of society wrapped up in a tasty audible package

i think i've only ever heard Higher Ground so this is a relatively new listen for me Too High - 5/5 Visions - 4/5 Living for the City - 4/5 Golden Lady - 5/5 Higher Ground - 5/5 Jesus Children of America - 4/5 All in Love Is Fair - 5/5 Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing - 5/5 He's Misstra Know-It-All - 4/5 Average score: 4.6/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ hard to hate on Stevie tbh. only small gripe i have is the length of some tracks (Living for the City, for example)

While Songs in the Key of Life is Stevie Wonder's best work, I find myself returning to Innervisions more. Probably because of its more 'manageable' runtime, That is not to say that the music is not good. In fact, it is amazing. The album is funky all the way through, and the basslines are amazing. Too High is a great opener, and the jazzy instrumentals and back-up vocals draw you in immediately. Living for the City addresses socio-political issues of racism, while Golden Lady is the total opposite and is incredibly catchy and fun. All in Love is Fair might be Wonder's best vocal performance. Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing is another funky and fun, almost goovy song, while He's Mistra Know-It-All is a chilled-out closer. While very different from Songs in the Key of Life, Innervisions is in its own way a perfect album. 5 stars.

Oh, this is the stuff

Soul music at it's finest

top tracks: don’t you worry ’bout a thing: so good! the instrumental for this with the dialogue calls for a fun time. love the latin vibes here. he’s misstra know-it-all: Im down to be conned. smooth piano and smoother lyrics makes for a groovy track living for the city: best one on the album i think. the story telling is something else, and i think wonder does a great job of subverting the typical country song narrative of the grind by tying in the racialization of black men in america, unable to fully participate in society due to various institutional racial constraints.

It's hard for me to not like Stevie Wonder and this has one of my favorite songs so there wasn't much to discover but a genuine listen was great.

Too High - 2 harmonicas in one solo. 2 high. A total classic from a total prodigy.

This is an album of pure genius. Captures a time and place with key insights into the issues of the world. Musically diverse and melodic. So many great songs… I don’t own this album yet. This needs to happen. 5 stars. Favourite track is ‘Living for the city’

There isn't a weak track on the album, it's groovy and bears repeated listens

J'ai une grande sympathie pour Stevie Wonder. Higher Ground.

Ouf ça fait du bien aux oreilles après avoir poignardé un canard! Je connaissais mieux l'album songs in the key of life. Il fait des vraiment belles compositions, des choses en apparence si simples, mais avec des harmonies très funky. Kudos particuliers à Too High, Higher Ground, Living for the City, All in love is fair et Don't you worry 'bout a thing!

Stunning

Wonderful

Trop cool de découvrir la musique de Stevie Wonder + en profondeur. Contexte politique hyper important à la compréhension de l’album

All around fantastic album

Some great songs included here. Livin' For the City tells a tragic story of innocence destroyed. Higher Ground is a funk classic and Don't You Worry Bout a Think is peak soul/R&B. I was leaning towards a 4 but given he wrote and played almost every instrument, I have to round up.

Fantastic from start to finish. I can’t believe all of these songs were in one man’s head. There are three massive hits but the other tracks are great too. I love the groove of “Golden Lady”, which escalates into an apotheosis. “Living For the City” is like an entire film contained with in one song. “Don’t Your Worry about a Thing” is both funny and catchy with a wonderful melody. Been too long since my last 5 and this one is well deserved.

Listened whilst getting ready, absolute bangers

Favorite track(s): Too High, Golden Lady, Higher Ground, Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing Heard before Previous rating: 8/10

Discazo.

stellar

Stevie! Super funky with a few sleepers. I remember when it came out.

lifted my mood

An all time favorite

Genius as always

Beautiful

One of the all time great soul albums. Listened to it hundreds of times and never get sick of it. Part of a nearly perfect 5 album run by Stevie.

wow this steven wonder guy's pretty good!

vo escuta

Love; classic. Stevies music is so full of life and heartwarming.

Can you believe it that I am older than this album, by about 12 years or so. And this is the first time I've listened to every song, every note, every grand turn of his wonderful voice. Shame on me for being a punk-ass snob. F' me! This album deserves any/all accolades it has received here and in the world outside these 1001 album reviews. This is golden. Simply beautiful in all aspects. If God were real and had any musical talents, this would be that thing's perfect output. 5 celestial stars, dammit!

Did not expect to like it that much, its awesome and has a great vibe

top 3: - all in love is fair - living in the city - he’s misstra know it all potentially one of my favourite albums i’ve ever heard just … wow

It was pretty good, calmly nice for studying

Hell yeah I was beginning to feel discouraged by the albums I had been given recently but this has rejuvenated me This is 5 stars no questions asked

Actually already have listened to this album. Stevie Wonder is one of the greats, and it shows through all of his work. Beautiful album, beautiful voice. Jazzy, fun, and rhythmic.

It was good and a classic.

This is what music should sound and feel like.

Underrated album, love this one!

oh my goddd i love it

omg i love stevie wonder.

POR FIN uno que ya escuché. del increíble stevie wonder!!!!!! innervisions es de sus mejores obras definitivamente. tiene TEMAZOS como too high, living for the city, golden lady, higher ground, don’t you worry ‘bout a thing, etc. DISCAZO con todas las letras

Very good

Heavenly

Isn’t he lovely? Really? Yes he is.

Groovy. Stevie. Wonderful.

Innervisions is the third of a stunning five album run, starting with Music of My Mind and culminating with Songs in the Key of Life, which sets Stevie Wonder as one of the greatest artists in popular music. Freed from the constraints of the Motown production line, Stevie’s genius was allowed to go wherever he desired and, playing the majority of the instruments and arranging the songs, he went places few had gone before. He was 23. There isn’t a bad song here, every minute is close to perfect but highlights (if that is the right word) include “Higher Ground”, “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”, “He’s Misstra Know-It-All” and the social commentary of “Living For the City” the lyrics of which could be aimed at many people in power today, particularly in USA, as could the criticism of the hypocrisy of the ‘Holy Rollers’ of “Jesus Children of America”. A stunning, breath-taking record.

Classic

Nice variety of themes, great instrumentation, overall great album with some classics.

The easiest 5 stars There's truly nothing like the groove in Higher Ground. Nothing like it. Could have easily added them all, but... Songs added to playlist: - Too High - Living For The City - Golden Lady - Higher Ground - Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing

The year is 1991. I'm 7 years old. I hear Higher Ground on the radio... ...it's the Red Hot Chili Peppers version. I fall in love. I tape it off the radio onto a cassette... ...my dad hears me listening to it and hands me this album on CD. And I'm introduced to a whole world of amazing music I never knew existed. Ultimately, Songs in the Key of Life is my favorite Stevie Wonder album. But this one is close behind. (...and for the record, I still love the Chili Peppers version)

Truly magical

dear i say perfect?

Holy Shit, was ein geiles Album. 5 Punkte und wer weniger gibt ist ein Huso

Man is this good! No weak spots (unlike some other SW albums). Has at his best when he keeps it up tempo, and that's this while album.

Absolutely a Wonderful album. Plenty of variety can be found here. Favourite tracks: Living for the city, He's Misstra Know-It-All. I'm still listening to this album.

It's just that good.

I really should listen to Stevie Wonder more often. Incredible album from start to finish.

What a fucking perfect album

One of the all-time greats. What a voice. What a musician. What a songwriter. There weren't many artists back then creating such elaborate music as an entirely solo act, and even fewer were capable of creating al album as good as Innervisions. At times it's poignant, at others it's funky as hell, and sometimes it's even both at the same time. It feels like a perfect album for any mood, honestly. Favourite tracks: Higher Ground, Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing, Visions

Gran disco

No my favorite Stevie Wonder album, but I still enjoyed it. A palate cleanser for the last thing I listened to.

Great listen, found myself going back to it again and again in the weeks after I listened to it. Excited to dig into more Stevie from this timeperiod.

Fantastisch!!! Wat een stem, wat een groove, wat een tekst. Deze ga ik vaker luisteren!!

One day this man will die and I will shed tears. Very good record, although I prefer songs in the key of life. Never listened to this one back to back and I am thankful for the experience 4.5

Wat een top album. Stevie Wonder proving they're the goat. I wish I could give a more insightful review, but I find I cannot fully say much more than just: I really love this album

Untouchable. Genius. Stevie.

Great album which really showcased Stevie's talent. It was really hard to chose a favorite song as I liked the ethereal sound of "Visions", but I was moved by the realism expressed in the song, "Living For The City". So many of his songs have rhythmic melodies with deep messages which lead to very inspiring music; however, my most favorite song from this album is "All In Love Is Fair". Although I don't really have a worst song, I will choose, "He's Misstra Know-It-All" as it is a little more repetitive than I like. On the whole, I don't have many complaints with this album.

Uhhhhhh. Fucking banger?!?!?!? Maybe his best album. Straight to the top of the list. The last two songs r like all time all timers

Religious experience. I may be too contrarian when I say this isn’t his best. It’s pretty fucking perfect. 11/10

Excellent. Papa kay also loved

Go-to Sunday morning album

I fell deeper in love with this album trying to come up with reasons why it's not perfect. I can only critique 2 things right now: Stevie's choice of instruments can —sometimes— feel —a little bit— dated. And I guess the ending track could feel a little more powerful just to keep with the energy of the album. The track list still feels perfect. So, I've heard this before. The songs I didn't remember by heart this time around, like Visions, were absolutely beautiful pieces of work. The pieces I did already remember fondly revealed layers of both instrumental and philosophical value. What a gem of a piece of work. I almost cried. I love when music makes you feel. 4.9/5

Another Stevie album and another 5/5 - Living for the City is an all-time great, and its supporting cast on this album elevate. Crazy that Stevie wrote this album at 24.

This is seriously a masterpiece of an album. I feel like Stevie wonder confirms the idea that people who lose one sense have their other senses heightened because damn. I think this is in my top 15 albums of all time, and my fav Stevie Wonder. Every song is so intricate but absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful. Fav songs ( I wish I didn’t have to choose): golden lady, all in love is fair, he’s misstra know-it-all

Ok, he deserves all the praise 😎

What a voice. What an album. No skips.

Would put this on a list of 100 most essential albums to listen to. Words about it will not do justice, it is legendary.

Geggjuð plata. Soundið óaðfinnanlegt hjá undrabarninu. Heildarverkið mjög solid.

Tær snilld

There are a few things to note first-- Stevie Wonder recorded this as he turned 23 years-old, and this was his SIXTEENTH album. Granted many of those early Motown recordings do not take the same time commitment or level of energy as later or modern albums. But I point this out to say that Wonder's life from a very young age was and is music. He's more than a practiced professional; this is a master at the height of his craft. He may even be called a genius savant in that he plays nears every instrument on every track on this album. Oh, and by the way, he's doing all this while blind. Let that all sink in for a moment. Even if Stevie Wonder didn't make any albums after this, Innervisions would cement him as one of the greatest musicians ever. But he did go on, and this still stands as one of his best, and it's probably a top ten album for me. In contrast to something like Songs in the Key of Life, which is sprawling, reverent, and contemplative, Innervisions is tight, compact, and explosive. It's beautiful fusion of soul, gospel, funk, and rock all filtered through Wonder's piano and clavinet. I can't imagine hearing the beautiful warble of "Too High" in 1973, like Thundercat transported himself 50 years back. The rest of the first side is delicate in "Visions", gutting in "Living For the City, groovy in "Golden Lady. Side two is optimistic in "Higher Ground", provoking in "Jesus Children of America, breathtaking in "All in Love Is Fair", playful in "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing", and tongue-in-cheek in "He's Misstra Know-It-All". All of these songs make a sum greater than their parts, and their influences are obvious throughout the history of pop, even in some of the greatest artists in Prince and Michael Jackson. They would not exist without Stevie Wonder.

This album is a straight banger. If you're into hip hop so many people have taken samples from this album from Madlib, J Dilla, Apollo Brown, Nujabes. Higher Grounds is a fun ass track. The closer track is hilarious. Had a joy listening to this. If it wasn't for this platform, would have never listen to this album. 5/5 stars

A beautiful, powerful album. This was a wonderful listen!

I think this is as good as it gets with Stevie Wonder. I can admit I wasn't looking forward to another SW record but this has been a pleasure. Just one track with harmonica, and even that was bearable with just clear single notes rather than the usual cacophonic mess. And even though I was getting it in stereo, at least it was all over and done with in the first track. I'd also forgotten how good 'Don't You Worry Bout A Thing' (so the original is bossa nova? I never knew. Awesome) and 'He's Misstra Know It All' are. I'm kinda shocked to say I really like this album. So what happened after this? A long descent to the absolute dogshite he wrote in the 80s and onwards. Stevie I think that the car crash did affect you after all. 4½

Masterpiece. It’s constantly debated what Stevie’s best project is — with Innervisions frequently cited alongside Songs in the Key of Life & others — but I think this is his most tight triumph. Not a skip on here, a litany of variety & songs like Living for the City, Too High, or Visions are all testaments to Wonder’s genius. This all goes without saying he also basically created the entire project on his own, playing nearly every instrument on 7/9 tracks. Really special album that is inarguably timeless & endlessly influential.

Stevie at his best, full of memorable songd

Cracking album. Haven't listened to it in years but forgot how good it was. Too High is a perfect start.

I was sent this one right after Talking Book, and I was surprised how much more I enjoyed it. You basically know what you're getting with 70s Stevie albums: pretty, passionate, funky soul, and I don't feel there's much departure from that here, but somehow the hooks to these songs come through so much more clearly than before. Favorites for me include 'Golden Lady' and 'He's Misstra Know It All'.

Just excellent

Gosh what a wonderful album and a joy to listen through in one go. Living For The City - middle bit where the 'nigger' gets arrested is shocking, but so clever for him to use his art as a way to politise and show people what's happening. Surrounded by those luscious harmonies, beautiful lyrics... A true great. 5 5 5 5 5 5

A generational talent, I think everyone loves at least one Stevie Wonder song and damn there's a shit ton to pick from. The dude has been living and breathing music his entire life. Too high and Living in the City are 2 songs that I'd never heard before that I really enjoyed. Of course Higher Ground is a staple too. This album just got better as it went on. The playing on this record is so good. He's one of the best at creating the most earworm melodies to some of the best grooves. This is definitely a 5/5

Stevie is an american treasure, this album is wonderful and not even his best.

Quite a few good songs on here and some great ones.

I can't say I've heard any of these songs before, but I'm glad I did now 5/5

Rip dad

Lots of Stevie Wonder this week. Strange coming to a normal album off the beast of Songs in the Key of Life. Beautiful album, so many bangers, so much important content and experience.

Wonder kan fantastische hits schrijven en tussen de lijnen van de pop een bijtende commentaar op de samenleving afleveren.

Great opening track, sets a mood that doesn’t let up the whole album. Found myself fleet footed, dancing, and fist pumping for the duration of this listen. These songs also say something, while being incredibly entertaining to listen to.

Classic.

Absolutely inspirational and fun, featuring pure genius by Stevie Wonder. This is a perfectly coherent and repeatable album experience. Irresistible urge to sing along to "Living For The City" and "Higher Ground" every time, what amazing tracks.

Less perfect than Songs in the Key of Life. Still pretty much perfect.

Overall: 9/10 Yeah, this is awesome. Stevie has such a great voice, and he makes some incredible, funky music. He's capable of fun dance music, slower ballads, and he isn't afraid to bring up social issues either. Do we even have a modern day equivalent to Stevie Wonder? I don't believe we do. Fav Song: Living for the City

Stevie might might not have a bad album holy hell the man is a damn musical savant

Un nouvel album ajouté à ma playlist!

Fantastic album, Living for the city is a masterpiece. I sort of forgot how amazing this album is. Every track is great. My favourite Wonder. 5 Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes 20/1001, 20/79 (25%) Will I get? Already have

Soft 5. I'll always love Stevie Wonder and this album is no exception. Not as strong as some of my other favorites of his, but still an undeniably great album. Did appreciate the more experimental nature of this one vs. his more ballad-filled albums of past.

Perfect Album, no skips. I think this might be the first time I've listened to this top to bottom, I didn't realize how short it was. Golden lady was the track that really stood out to me on this time listening. Stevie wonder might be my favorite musician ever and this is some of his best.

Amazing! 10/10

Amazing record - Stevie at his peak. Smooth, funky, and political. All sorts of highlights throughout, but a favorite of mine is the harmonies in Misstra Know-it-all.

super cool 10/10

Instant five stars - sensational album. Every track stands out for itself, but the album as a whole blends nicely and by all accounts had a huge impact and important commentary at the time. 10/10

Great!!!

I've been fortunate enough to get two Stevie Wonder albums over the last week. Is it safe to say he is one of the least respected musicians of his time? Absolute rockstar. Best Song: Living for the City Rating: 9.0/10 Stars: 5

Lil' Stevie does it again

Incredible album.

No single individual should have this much talent. Seems ridiculously unfair. Favourite Higher Ground.

'Genius' doesn't only get thrown around too much, it's too often employed to describe an artist's style - their way w/ words and music - a lazy attempt to get at the quiddity of a figure. But w/ Stevie Wonder, it's more than appropriate to observe that, yes, the man is a genius: for some reason, it works to characterize his musical program. At one point, 'genius' referred to an individual's quintessence rather than mere cognitive capacity. W/ this in mind, we can take heed of Stevie's adage: 'Everybody's got a thing / But some don't know how to handle it.' On Innervisions, the third of his 'classic period,' genius manifests as a brave embrace and a final transcendence of platitude: the ability to say what's on his mind in a cocktail of complexity.

there’s a real sense of soothing and grooving i always get when listening to Stevie

Lindo, animado e romantico. Curti principalmente Golden Lady.

Excellent album. Not a single thing I can comment on

Perfect album

What a fun funky album

A relaxing and wonderfully composed album. So, so good. 9/10

Listened to this quite a few times last week while doing work. The best parts aren't as good as Songs in the Key of Life but overall this was shorter and more consistent. Muy chévere. Low 5.

such a beautiful album

Pure bliss, от которого то радуешься, то злишься, то танцуешь, то грустишь. Универсальное произведение.

Love it! So funky. So soulful. Cool jazzy production and really nice mixes
