I do not care for this. Long. Boring. Feels insanely pretentious. Not for me.
I don’t know
I would love to hear the justification as to why an album like this has made its way onto 1001 albums i need to hear before i die. I needed to hear this before i die, really? I need to hear insufferable singing that is the vocal equivalent to being dragged over hot coals? Every word is so unconvincing and aimless. I need to hear a F tier level of generic 90's rock? And why is this thing so damn long? I only listened to disc one, which was enough of a challenge, you can forget about enduring remixes and left over tracks. I don't dislike this album because it's bad, i dislike it because it's bad and we're memorialising it on a list like this. So many other albums deserve this spot, not this bloated piece of shit.
1/2
I never bothered checking out Julian Cope because I guess I assumed I wouldn’t like him. As it turns out, I was right!
Ehh, I really did not care for this. Sounds like Julian is his own biggest fan.
Terrible voice, mediocre music. I think he loves the sound of his own voice too much
Thank you, next!
I’ve tried writing songs of my own before and self-doubt always creeps in thinking the lyrics are shit and I’ll sound like a twat, but I don’t think I need to worry so much about that. If I keep it under an hour, nothing can be that bad. I can probably count on one hand the albums that are longer which don’t grate on the nerves.
The second half of this album was actively bad. Like my ears hurt listening to it. It was completely unenjoyable and ran on for far too long. I feel like I’m not fully justified in giving this album the dreadful one star however because there were also parts of this album I actively enjoyed and even thought were really good. But heck if some of those tracks didn’t make me want to fill my ears with concrete so I wouldn’t have to live anymore with even the possibility of hearing that pile of crap again. Yeah, one star seems appropriate.
No patience for this crap. So boring
bad bad bad bad bad bad what happened to teardrop explodes
Imagine if Jim Morrison impersonator of the doors met up with a group of guys that want to be REM, but their talent was never there. This is what this album reminded me of. 1 star might give people hope to listen to it. DON’T!!!
I cannot wait for this album to be over. The music is somewhere in the middle, but I really don't care for this lead singer's voice. They're like a 90s knock-off version of The Doors, trying to do psychedelic music the best they can, and screwing it up completely. Also, clocking in at 76 minutes, this album was WAY too long. This is uninspired hot garbage wrapped in a turd-filled burrito serviced with a side of diarrhea dipping sauce.
Cool album artwork, musics not bad, but this dudes singing is shit 1001 album worthy: no - 81/146
ever wondered what it would sound like if nick cave covered emf's unbelievable?
Hoping to like this was my first mistake. Continuing to listen was my major mistake. The music overall could maybe have reached a low 3 - even if a lot of it carries a dated cheesy sound - but *holy jumpin* these vocals and repetitive repetitive repetitive repetitive (and annoying) lyrics almost seem like an intentional sandbagging. What the hell?? I can't remember not being able to finish so many songs on an album in years. Woof. This sucked. 3/10 1 star
The first song pretty much says it all. It asks, "How much can you take?" And the answer is "not too much" as I quickly gave up on this one. DNF as I could barely get through five songs, let alone two and a half hours of this rubbish.
This is like the serious version of Flight of the Conchords. This guy is the lead singer from The Teardrop Explodes, another terrible album on this list. East Easy Rider and Promised Land are improvements. It's growing on me. Safesurfer is both the best song and the worst song at the same time. Is that possible? The sci-fi noises are not adding to the song. This is like a shitty Oasis album. The length of this album is a major issue. It doesn't feel like a coherent album either. Lenny Bruce clips set to vaguely reggae music probably felt edgy at one time. You sounds like the music to a cheesy spy series from the 60s. Not Raving but Drowning is the best song, the music is actually pretty cool, but the lyrics are nonsense. Jemaine Clement definitely loves Julian Cope. Urge Overkill too. This album cannot end soon enough.
Eugh...
This album tests what a person wants out of a project like this one. Do you want the Rolling Stone top 500 doubled? Or do you want an interesting collection of albums which go into mainstream and subgenres highlighting the best on offer? I could choose either but I would prefer the latter. However I struggle to define what should be a 1 star album for this list - personal taste versus should it be on the list? It could have been 'Come Away with Me' but I can argue against as it was part of a zeitgeist moment whether I liked it or not. Might it be 'Peggy Suicide'? It achieves the stated goal but has deficiencies. It's experimental but not enough. The songs are competent but not blazing new trails. Many bands did experimental music or recording techniques and also wrote a banger song. None of these songs are bangers and mostly forgettable. I feel no need to revisit any of them. His vocals are uneven and generally just average without daring to be interesting. I had to break up listening into 2 parts due to the double album length. The second half did not catch my interest like the first. As a result, I resented having to sit through this much self-indulgent bloat. This guy was good enough to get a major label deal but not good enough to really break through. I'm not saying this album shouldn't be on the list. But I am saying good enough isn't good enough.
This shit sucks so hard.
Repetitive and simple. His voice is weak and very flat.
Bad. Long.
Nope.
Eh

couldn't get into it... way too long of an album. 1/5
The first song hasn’t started yet and I’m bored. And it doesn’t improve. Childish melodies. Awful rhyming. Rinse and repeat. Pfui. 1 star.
pretentious wank
3/10. I'm starting to think that the people who chose these are quite pretentious. I genuinely enjoyed myself for all of like 2/3 songs which were nice rock tunes, until this album descended into to madness. Not the good kind of madness, the kind of madness that really had me questioning what I was listening to. Some of the remixes on the B side were alright but seriously there is an 11 minute track of just drums and random noises. Its weirdness for the sake of weirdness imo and that will surely leave it among some of the worst on this list.
Not my jam
I couldn't possibly give this album as many stars as Julian Cope thinks it's worth. This is both a statement of how far up himself he is, and on how much I disliked this. Somehow it manages to feel poorly thought out in several different genres, all being cut through with a sense of "look how amazing I am at songs" like a stick of rock. Go do one, Julian - this wasn't worth the list by any stretch.
“Now, how much does it take to go down on someone - someone that you hate?” is a line that will be living rent free in my head for a while. Overall: 2/10
more like Peggy SucksAss
Only liked one song
Couldn't get thru a single song.....maybe stopped trying after 3 or 4
Now I'm just getting pissed off. Another 2 hour slog of crap.
Another I've never heard of. One listen doesn't justify me to decide whether an album was influential or not if I’ve never heard of them. Who did he influence? Who did he make an impact on? Some niche group? Music critics? I don't mind the voice but again, is his music more different to his contemporaries? Pass
Hideous
This is so extremely early 90s. The era where hair metal was fading and “alternative” was catching on but was also so loosely defined that labels didn’t know what to do so they just kinda started signing every weirdo they came across hoping something would stick. Thanks to that era for making a hit out of Jesus Built My Hotrod. It’s probably for the best that this one was allowed to fade into obscurity.
Nah
Wow garbage
This was borderline unlistenable
I did not like this at all and don’t understand why someone would suggest that anyone else listen to it
Trust me to get a double album of complete crap. Didn't find one song I enjoyed. How does crap like this earn someone a living? Can't they can just stick to writing it in their bedroom and playing it to a few unfortunate mates!
2.5 hours long… are you kidding me. Playing catch up is all fun and games til you hit yet another long and extremely mid British album. I keep getting baited into a false sense of enjoyment trying to catch up and then something like this pops up. In all honesty the music is fine but the runtime pissed me off because how can I have been listening for 45 minutes and still only be 1/3 of the way through. I had to listen to this in multiple sessions and felt genuine relief when the last song finished. If I'm being honest by halfway I was just waiting for the album to be done playing and couldn't really be bothered to keep track of songs I liked. I do know that I liked Safesurfer for the instrumentals, and Beautiful Love was a decent song too. I should probably give this a 2, but it's getting a 1
I didn't even make it through the first song. Not for me.
ok "how much can u take" not much more of this julian.
Why is this 2.5 hrs?!?! Didnt do anything for me
“By 1984, Cope's love of hallucinogens -- as well as a toy car collection that occupied nearly an entire year of his life -- was at an all-time high.” I rest my case, your honor. :D
Awful.
pink floyd but lacking any creative direction or cohesiveness
safesurfer was decent, rest of it was ASS
I feel like the phrase "Don't judge a book by it's cover" is perfectly applied here, except sort of the opposite way it's commonly used. I find that phrase is mostly used to say that something (like a book cover) may look boring or something unappealing isn't an indicator of it's contents; it could be amazing just with a dull exterior. I feel like it's the opposite here. The cover here is really neat; it makes you think you're in for a crazy or experimental album, or something that has a lot of creativity baked into it. Or something you've never heard before. Then you open this album on Spotify and see the profile picture of the artist Julian Cope, and he's wearing a wizard hat and butterfly wings, and is perched on a rock on what looks like Mars. And then you read he is apparently, according to the Spotify bio, a writer, historian, and COSMIC SHAMAN (what?) and you think "oh this is gonna get wild, let's go" And then it's just *another* bland, alt rock album. It may dabble with some off-the-beaten-path ideas or concepts here and there, but if you told me this was just an album picked out of the vinyl store bargain bin that was forgotten about for being too bland, I would have no trouble believing you. So let this be a lesson; just how a boring outside can hide something stellar on the inside, the same is true that something wild or exciting on the outside can be as boring as a plain rice cake on the inside.
At times seems like music they would play at cult activities and rituals. Started somewhat mellow but also trying to pull you in with all the terrible stuff out there. Safesurfer felt like something they would play or chant as some creepy ritual was occurring. Then the end was like you were brainwashed and stuck in a weird dissonance. Guitar and actual instrument parts were good but overall it made my insides feel icky and kind of sad.
Langweilig und keine schöne Stimme.
Not my jam.
Dit is muziek, maar niet heel mooi en zeker niet bijzonder. Soms is de zang zelfs een beetje vals. *
I can’t listen to it anymore…he can’t decide if he’s Leonard Cohen or Lou Reed or somebody-the-fuck else, and the arrangements, and playing, are all over the map…it’s not pretty
Wenig interessanter Art Rock.
Yuck
The first track asks “how much can you take?” My answer: not 154 minutes. I listened to disc 1 all the way through but only the beginning of each track on disc 2 because I’d had enough.
No, makes me uncomfortable, noodly and slightly.off.kilter
Didn’t make it through this whole thing. I don’t like the singing or songwriting and the music is nothing special either.
Really disliked this album. First one that I started skipping tracks as they were grating on me. I give this 1 star.
Not for me
I just got bored halfway through it.
Really not my interest...
This was shit.
Disrespectful & vulgar album cover so I don’t even want to hear their music.
i am not listening to 2.5h of an album i'm not interested in. track 10 was alright. would be better without the vocals though.
you really expected me to listen to TWO AND A HALF HOURS of this bullshit no thanks
Oof, no thanks.
Muy aburrido
Already on the first song the only thing I can think of is how much I hate everything about this. I went into this journey with the intention to listen to all albums in their entirety. As it turns out, this will not be possible I gave this album about 40 minutes before giving up entirely. The music was so awful that I suppose the artist found no other way to make listening to the album more miserable other than to make it nearly three hours long.
Another basic, boring British album on this list. When will it stop
This album was LONG. A lot of the songs were long. And I was ready to done with this long before it was over. I ended up skipping through songs on disc 2 because I was just done. However, I did have 2 Songs I liked: Beautiful Love and This American Lite.
Did not care for it, not my thing.
How is this on the list? My god.
Not good, not bad, forgettable
Was mostly boring and annoying (I can not take much more). I didn't really like his voice either, I liked the lower parts but I just didn't really get much from the rest tbh. Experimental I guess but not for me.
The second track is good but the rest was boring and way too long to be an entertaining album.1/5
Tried. Nope.
mismash of different styles, nothing to remember this thing
Awful and uninspired.
pelo amor de deus, demorei 3 dias pra conseguir terminar de ouvir o álbum, e ele ainda por cima era péssimo. sonoridade e vocais me deixaram agoniada em diversas músicas. se tivesse menos estrelas eu daria.
No bonita
Huonolla tavalla käppää.
Some embarrassing lyrics and mediocre music
Horrible.
Repetitive lyrics: ✅ Boring guitar and electric organ solos: ✅ Repetitive lyrics: ✅ 1 hour 15 min runtime: ✅ Jared’s enjoyment: ❌ Album art is pretty cool tho!
Excepto "Beautiful Love", ¿dónde se sampleaba esta canción?, me ha parecido un rollo. Una estrella y no es algo imprescindible en la vida.
Not a single song on this worked for me. Tediously boring.
Repetitive slow and boring
No
This album blows.
eh
Suck my entire ass
Yeah, I get it. It’s a socio-political album about a raft of 90s-themed UK and global topics. I just don’t find the music catchy.
I just can't really take any more punk, might revisit this at a later date 😪
not very good
This is terrible. Just a jumbled mess.
Lou reed 90s knockoff
Peggy Shits.
Nee, ik heb niks met zangers die niet kunnen zingen. Mijn mening ;)
couldn't finish
Not good
Lo, pan juice has more talent than this. Couldn’t get through it
Oh what a waste of time. AGAIN. Uninspired Jam tunes, hated it. Skipped through. Boring.
Debut album of Julian Cope is OK, but this one not.
I thought this would be a decent album after the first few tracks. However, it quickly got very tiring and the length did not do any favors. This was my first DNF cause I couldn’t make it through the last three songs. There’s a lot going on with most of it not being good.
A bit of a rambling mess
Trash album. Unbearable.
Not very good
Not for me
I know it's a controversial opinion that one should enjoy the music that is worth hearing. I can't enjoy the vocals or the music on this one.
Bleh
Nope, didn’t like that enough to finish all 29 songs.
