Reviews (page 7 of 8)
its okay but i didnt add many songs 3/12 songs added
very 90s
There is some interesting song, particularly 5-4=Unity that is a mix of indie rock and jazz. Although I will probably not revisit and good surprise listen.
Solid yet generic 90s indie tunes.
The intro had me! And then it went to shit. Whiny, cliche, and lame. Would actively prefer not to hear this one again. Easy 2 stars. Couldn't even finish it - Wonky intro. Beatless but still together - Whoa the bpm/time change. On my toes from the start. Interesting - Falling into more traditional 90s rock now. Not in a bad way (yet) - Okay this is lame now. Bland and lame - Shoot I was on shuffle. Gotta listen to more of it now... - What a strong start wasted. Fell back into boring cliche lame rock. Might not even bother struggling through this whole album
Dinosaur Jr. laid the pavement so Pavement could sidewalk. 4/10

I mean this was like ~fine~ in the simplest way. I didn't save any songs. It wasn't very gripping.
Just mid. Not sure why these guys got so much attention. They sound like dozens of other indie bands of the time. I don't feel they were groundbreaking, nor particular deep, or experimental. What's the draw? His voice is often annoying and pitchy. The music is... fine. Nothing too interesting or hook-y. I don't hate them. Just don't feel like anything here is worth listening to twice. Maybe that' the point of the list..?? You should hear these albums Once before you die. That should be enough, I guess. That's a 2!
Annoyingly droning 90s bullshit
Don’t like the vocals and stuff but music was alright.
Quite forgettable.
I had heard a few Pavement songs before listening to this, but I mainly knew them from music critics. The most annoying and opinionated people you know love this band, Pitchfork chief among them. After having listened to this in full I can say with full confidence that they're full of shit. This is middling, stupid, noise rock. Its not that special.
Very 90s
I much prefer Slanted And Enchanted... got bored with them after that
Should I care or not? I dont really care about this album that much.
I thought I'd enjoy this more?
Sacanagem duas horas se album
All too American.
Forgettable
2-5
Maybe one I should have paid more attention too, as I thought it was decent at the time, but this goes into the nothingness range for me
I am not enjoying this that much. Not bad by any means, just not my thing.
Not really my jam. Felt rather chaotic.
Turns out I don't like an entire album of pavement that much.
What a relief when after seven songs there was finally one with no off-key singing. Are they the American version of Sloan? Once in university I walked into a Sloan show, didn't recognize the song they were playing and left to play Super Mario Brothers 3 with my partner at the time. We spent the hour or so we could have been at Sloan getting killed by this little sun that swooped from one side of the screen to the other. Never did beat that level. Still a better use of my time then going to Sloan, or Pavement if that had been an option. If someone out there is unfortunate enough to have read this review I apologize.
Did not enjoy, felt mostly loud, obnoxious, and whiney. There were some redeemable songs that I enjoyed which kept it from being one Star.
It's fine, but it's not really for me. This project is showing me how much my enjoyment of an album hinges on the vocals. These, I do not care for. 😬 Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.
FAVO: 5-4=Unity,
Fine.
At first I felt like I might actually like this but it's just too low key, bordering on boring. I think that's kind of the idea but me no likey.
I couldn't really get along with this. I wanted to but it just felt like all the songs were the same. Fine background music.
Hat was aber irgendwie zuwenig.
Meh
This was alright, but I didn't love it. I heard a lot of Meat Puppets in their sound, and I started reading a little bit about their history on Wikipedia as I was listening, and after reading how much praise they're received over the years for their music (not to mention being included on this list), I was really expecting more than I got from this album. Like I said, it was alright, but maybe just not for me. Two stars.
eh
I never really liked Pavement, from the first time I listened to them on some "most essential" list, and I still don't like them. This sounds like Hudson Bell to be, or in fact vice versa, but without the cool, drawn-out fuzzy guitar riffs, instead replacing them with bits from Spinal Tap's Jazz Odyssey or boring garage band music.
Pavement seems to want to make Indy rock music with punk rules and it just doesn't work for me. Cut Your Hair is worth a second listen. 2 outta 5.
Just a bit lack lustre
Not for me, music is ok but lyrics are lazy
I'm not one for lo-fi fuzzy alternative music with bad singing. This is unfortunately one of those things.
Day 40- First listen- I really liked the first few tracks especially the instruments but unfortunately got a little bored in the middle part of the album. I def need to listen again without getting distracted! (2.5/5)
sh
Boh un po' noioso e monotono. Da riascoltare forse. Il cantante stona.
Meh. Drunken sounding, meandering, half sung indie rock. My buddies LOVE these guys and I just can't seem to get it. 2/5
meh
Not a bad album, i would listen to a few of the songs
It wasn’t bad, but it just… was. Too whiny, too meandering, and nothing ever hooked me in. It felt like the kind of background noise that blends into the hum of a laundromat. No standouts, no offense taken — just not my vibe.
did not like.
Some decent, but mostly not great.
Alternative rock. I like the sound of this album a lot more than the execution.
Not really my thing.
4/10
Too whiny.
The vocals are tough to get through but I liked the music
I do not like this album. I do not like this band. It's just not a sound I can get into.
Meh. 2 stars.
Nothing really stood out for me
Not a bad album but no song really pulled me in or made me want more.
Day529 - i guess one pavement album wasn’t enough
Sounded like I heard it all before, but pretty sure I haven't
Basic alt rock, nothing interesting.
Previously rated: Slanted And Enchanted (3/5) ******************************* This band needed TWO entries on this list?! I honestly felt a little queasy by the end of this. Everything being out of tune for 42 minutes can do that, I guess. Best track: 5-4=Unity because it's a little jazzy and doesn't feature the "quirky" off-key singer.
Didn't like them then, don't like them now. The patron saints of guys who want to be in bands but can't sing, play guitar, write songs, or express themselves without unmerited scorn. That said, it has some nice moments.
Not my thing, was kind of bland. 2.5/5
01) Silence Kid - 7,0 02) Elevate Me Later - 6,5 03) Stop Breathin - 5,5 04) Cut Your Hair - 6,0 05) Newark Wilder - 5,5 06) Unfair - 5,5 07) Gold Soundz - 6,0 08) 5-4=Unity - 7,0 09) Range Life - 6,5 10) Heaven Is a Truck - 5,5 11) Hit the Plane Down - 5,0 12) Fillmore Jive - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,92 (59/100)
OK, and not a big fan of his voice.
Downer indie rock. Very middle school angst
Nothing the Minute Men didn’t do better
Likte da ikkje så godt
Pavement is one of those bands that I should like but when I listen it just falls flat. It still does after this listen too.
there wasn't a song that really caught me or had me wanting to listen to more
Ok but nothing special. I'm not really a fan of Pavement.
It’s alright, a bit repetitive album. Better indie rock out there. Gold soundz was good
It was good in the first part then i REALLY didn't like the last part - at all.
Not one that I have heard anything about previously. It does seem like it could have ended up being an influential album for some future bands. This one wasn’t a favorite of mine, mostly wasn’t into the singers voice. It did sound like it had potential otherwise.
Music was alright, really wasn't a huge fan of the singer.
Nothing that really caught my attention here
The 90s indie kids can keep this. I think you had to be there
If "Boring Rock" was a genre, these guys would be pioneers.
An album I'm not sure of the reason behind its presence on this list. Pavement's Crooked Rainx2 was your typical nineties alternative, easy enough to listen to but not distinct. They kept reminding me of another band, though I couldn't quite put my finger on who. The vocals weren't anything remarkable either.
Boring. A lot of the same stuff. Love "Cut your hair". Everything else sounds the same.
Cut Your Hair is a decent track. I'm just bored and unimpressed by the rest. They're not doing anything that wasn't done much better by the Pixies or Weezer.
I'm getting whiffs of Modest Mouse. I'm getting hints of Sonic Youth. I'm getting an urge to listen to those bands instead. But mostly I'm just getting bored.
Meh
This is what happens when you make music drunk/stoned. Someone pleeeze tell him to tune that guitar. It was ok, but can't really tell the difference between these guys and every other indie grunge band from the mid 90s. 2½
I'm afraid this is just one of my least favorite types of rock music.
I feel like I should like Pavement more than I actually do. This album has nothing I want to listen to again.
Hate to do this, guys, but I gotta be honest: I fucking hate pavement. The ‘I don’t care’ attitude and sloppy, apathetic sound feels like a defense mechanism against criticism that these songs are underwritten, the instrumentation uninspired and their sound derivative of better artists who had already been long out of style. It’s like when a kid says ‘I wasn’t even trying!’ whenever they lose. In an adult, it’s kind of pathetic. It may be true that the noodly, unassured playing gives them a distinctive style, but if that distinctive style can otherwise be described as ‘sucking at your instrument’ I’m not sure it’s anything worth striving for. Because of their indie status, this is probably the 10th time I’ve given this album a try, and every time I try to convince myself that songs like ‘cut your hair’ and ‘range life’ could have been big singles in a just society. But it’s just not true. They weren’t big singles because they aren’t very good.
..
Not for me. This is a demo. Who decided this record was ok to sell to people in exchange for money? Did they throw in 5-4=Unity just to remind the listener that music doesn’t have to be painful? Or did Spotify glitch and what I heard was actually by a different band.
Wasn’t really feeling this.
2/5. I've heard worse from this list, but this doesn't qualify as good in any respect.
Meh… I imagine my enjoyment of this album would change with the weather and my age and my mood. It’s not bad, it’s just not absolutely good either. It’s like the idea of what a college freshman thinks would be impress a girl at the keg party.
Like Weezer but without any redeeming qualities
Not a fan of this. Really hampered by the vocals. I get that there's a rawness to this genre but it doesn't make me want to listen to it anymore. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)
I have a weird hang up with a lot of 90’s alt/indie/grunge music. I am very attached to the bands I grew up with but find the ones I didn't to be facsimiles or posers. It’s irrational and I’m aware of it, and it ignores that influence is a reflection and many bands and artists get my love while others get my disdain for the same reasons. I love Pearl Jam, can’t stand Soundgarden. I love Rage Against the Machine, I can’t fuck with Audioslave. This band unfortunately hits me the wrong way. I can’t help but hear them as trying to be other bands. I fuck with other songs and bands that are angsty annd alt but idk why I just cant connect with this one. The voice sounded too whiny, the music felt too familiar to be original. I think it’s a me thing. His voice does that screeching thing and I don’t love it but it did remind of a a song that I can’t place my finger on. Idt it’s this band but I swear it’s this singer. Who knows. I’m biased with this era. Maybe I was just a contrarian who had to define myself against other shit in highschool, idk.
this one just didn't do much for me. I had it on in the background during work, and at the end I couldn't name a notable song that stuck out to me. not bad, but not memorable in my humble opinion
I appreciated the indie rock vibe, especially with never having heard of this band before but nothing too exciting.
I think I see why this album made the cut? I feel like they could have influenced later groups, but I’m not sure. Either way, it wasn’t all that good. Also, not exactly new info, but one of the songs used on Pardon The Interruption is on this album, Cut Your Hair, but they only play the ‘woo-boo’ part. Using that song on a show with two bald hosts is a brilliant move.
This is the epitome of the middle of the road for me. Until we got to 5-4, earned itself a two with that one.
Pretty good sound
Detuned and whiny. I know a lot of folks really dig Pavement, but I'd never really gotten much into them. After hearing my first complete Pavement album, I really don't have much of a desire to explore further. Back to the alt-90's with you.
2 not great only good song was haircut
AWFUL
I've never been able to get into them
No strong feelings but not sure I can give it a 3. 2.5 maybe?
not bad
*sigh* I'm not much of a fan
2/5
it ranges from a peak of mediocre to a low of annoying af. dos estrellas.
unremarkable
Not for me.
This falls into that category of MTV- ready grunge pop. It sounds like a Nirvana ripoff. Nothing new. Too clean. No real personality. Just an imitation. This is for suburban Midwest teenagers, who all have cars and hang out at the mall. It’s not bad. It’s just not that special. Whiny white boy noise.
Not for me.
Eh
Can hear the fresh starts of some shoegazie indie stuff in here. Garage rock and some passion behind it. 3/10
How did this influence anything. Committed the ultimate crime, boring.
None of the tracks stood out and one or two were a bit cacophonous for me taste (Hit the Plane Down) so it’s between a 2 and a 3 - I doubt I’d listen again.
Didn’t do a lot for me
Whiny little bitch of an album to listen to. 2 stars
Listened to pavement while running on pavement. Don't care for the singers voice. Had a bit of a groove in the third quarter of this album, but then we got back to whiny voice. Was trending toward the "low 3" category, but after the last two songs it confidently hits the "square 2" category
Very below average 90s indie album. The singer only knows how to whine or how to scream. Instruments didn't do much for me either. Fun enough my favorite song was 5-4=Unity which had 0 appearance from Whiny-McWhineface. Coincidence?
Dissident. Basic. Juvenile.
this album sounds like literally a thousand others albums from this era. sounds kind of like grunge, but not really. distorted guitars, a guy who can’t really sing that well, but he seems to be passionate. nothing special here.
Kinda bored, tbh
Honestly just not a great record. The vocals get on my nerves and the hooks aren’t very interesting. There are some neat aspects, but nothing noteworthy.
Who are these pretentious punks? Their good songs are rip-offs of great artists, like Buddy Holly and Dave Brubeck; and they openly dis Smashing Pumpkins for no reason. Pavement was meant to be walked all over with no second thought or listen.
Nothing I would listen to again. Best Song: Unfair
Fine. i don't know what all the fuss is about
Doesn't feel like anything special. I guess I somehow missed these guys back in the 90s
Not sure I would ever like it
Unenjoyable trip back to 90s sound.
I really enjoyed it.
Weak rudimentary rock
Boring music from a boring band.
ja, ganz nett; kann man mal zwischendurch hören
it sounds basic
this is one of those albums that i know a lot of my friends consider precious and i get why they do, but it's still pretty bad
Irritating. I won’t go back to it.
meh
Samey same
a bit meh for me
This stuff was ok. Nothing too memorable.
90’er alt rock, indie, melankolsk
I knew from the second I read the review that I would not enjoy an American Indie Band. I was not mistaken. One or two tracks were tolerable, but overall another bloody racket.
The singles are good and the rest is so boring
Ég skil hvað þau eru að gera og ég hlusta oft á svipuð bönd en ég skil ekki hvernig þetta stendur eitthvað sérstaklega upp úr. Mér fannst þetta eiginlega bara vera meðalmennskuhandboltarokk. Kannski var þetta upphafið að því og allt sem á eftir kom eru eftirhermur en þá hlusta ég bara á þær í staðinn.
Skil ekki alveg hæpið sem sumir jafnaldrar mínir hafa fyrir þessu bandi. Mér finnst þetta allt einhvern veginn hálf klárað.
Better than their other album but still not great. 2.5
Cansativo
eh, very moody, but cool to hear just a band and a girl and some lyrics
Nice album very easy listening but didnt find any real highlights just some good musicians just playing nice songs. Lacked that wow element for me as it was all sounding alike and no zenith on this one. Liked it but didnt wow me.
The lead singer had a terrible voice but music was ok
I was going to go on another useless diatribe about my problem with Critically Acclaimed® albums, but instead I will leave the following one word review of Crooked Rain Crooked Rain: Whatever.
Garage band album.
Didn’t really enjoy this album, it’s not the kind of music I would listen to now or back in the nineties when it was first released.
Not a massive fan of this lo-fi indie, find it dull and switched this album off after a few songs
I wish I could get into this one, but I couldn’t. To me it seemed like the music was louder than the vocals, which made it hard to understand what was being said at times. I felt like the vocals were flat too. This one def not for me.
Bored my socks off. But too bland to hate.
Gear: Focal Clear (ZMF) Mische: adäquat roh ohne besondere Highlights Mugge: eingängiger bis -töniger Indie/Alt-Rock Wertung: 2/5
Sehr alternativer Rock. Für mich zu viel. Stellenweise sehr coole Gitarrenriffs.
Bad dad music :(
So forgettable
An interesting listen. I liked the way the sounds builds up across each track. It sounds almost orchestral in places. There's an edge, a rawness. Pavement are clearly decent musicians. I'm not sure about the songs though. I've always loved Range Life. But then it drags for the second half of the album. Work in progress.
High School emo punk rock ish. Ok.
Enjoyable strumming and mood to it, didnt stand out to me
5-4=Unity brought it up to a 2 I Guess
Just an ok album all around, no reason for it to stick around in my head
Meh. Not quite my thing.
Jesus this is dull.
A playful style. There was a definite sound back - eternally catchy for a summer tune in the 90s. As I listen, I feel it be great to see this performed laconically in a student bar. "cut your hair" captured the fun and quirky 90's sound and yet ... much of the rest of the album reminded me of the line from the film Clueless about all that "complaint rock from university radio stations". Some playful wackiness here - nice to reminisce. (I always preferred the upbeat party tracks of these albums, the rest is a bit of filler and noodling, I feel). 3
Look, the fact is that I just can’t tolerate Malkmus’s vocals (I’m assuming he’s the lead on most of this). And he makes so many of these songs sound the same. Pity he doesn’t cut loose more often, like he does in Unfair, where it’s all about yelling & screaming & he doesn’t have to hold a tune. I also really like the instrumental track (for obvious reasons), 5=4=Unity & love the little steal in it from The Beatles’ I Want You(She’s So Heavy), as I loved the steal from Buddy Holly’s Everyday in the opening track, Silence Kid. I checked out some of the lyrics - really liked Cut Your Hair. But the vocals bugger it up for me.
I really wanted to like this. I always _wanted_ to like Pavement. But I just don't hear the tunes. I like Cut Your Hair and Range Life, but everything else leaves me kinda 'meh'. I know many fans and critics really dug them, like they were the second coming of whatever, but I never heard it. Pavement sound like a 1000 shitty bands (and I mean that in a good way - I like a shitty band) that played at the Sandringham Hotel in the late 80s/early 90s. I just didn't get excited by them. Maybe you needed to see them live? I am grateful for the prompt to listen to this album all the way through (and I listened to it twice), but I cannot for the life of me remember much of what I heard.
I grew up loving Sonic Youth, and I was in the line to meet them at the Matador 21 shows in Las Vegas and they called it off to watch Pavement's supposedly last show. I was heartbroken. And the Pavement show was awful too; they started bickering at each other during the set. I've hated Pavement ever since. So, fuck Pavement. That being said, this album is...alright? Cut Your Hair is a good song, albeit one with some heavy SY influences, and there are a couple of other decent songs as well, despite Stephen Malkmus having a total lack of singing ability. The instrumentation overall is strong, and tracks like 5-4=Unity are just different enough to be interesting. ***, minus one * for these assholes ruining my chance to meet my idols.
My overriding impression was that it was dreary........like the weather ! 2*
I know there’s a lot of hype around these guys and a lot of praise heaped, but I don’t quite get it. I think for me it’s the voice: just too weak/off-key. The music itself is fine, some groovy rifts, but none of it sticks in the brain. Makes me think it’s music made by people who are perfectly capable of playing more deliberately and skillfully, but choose to play rough-around-the-edges music. Which begs the question: why? Hire a better singer and this could be a great band. As it stands, forgettable.
Not my favorite
This album smells like drugs
I have never liked Pavement. Still don’t.
Meh. Nothing spectacular. 2/5
Too much guitar. Too much whining. And it's coming from the Radiohead fan so...
I mean I think it is OK. And I get they were an independent band doing this in the early 90s, but I feel there were other bands that did this style much better.
Sounds like a band I’ve never heard before. Sounds like a band I’ve completely forgotten before.
This is lazy and doesn't have anything of merit apart from Range Life
meh. Always thought Pavement were boring and this confirms it for me.
Fine, I guess.
This was an album that seemed familiar but once I listened to it seemed very dislike what I thought. A 90s alternative album is usually right up my alley but this was like if a country writer wanted to make rock music. It wasn’t very good and the one song I did know couldn’t save this album. Was pretty surprised how much I disliked this one. 5.4/10
Best Song: Stop Breathin. Even though I found the chorus a bit annoying, I liked the instrumental breakdown at the end. Worst Song: Range Life. Sounds like Beck in the worst way possible. Overall: Music that sounds "indie" without sounding like anything else. Plucky. Earnest. Boring.
last song carried this to a 2/5 but it wasnt that good
Indie rock often is just too unpolished sounding for me and makes it seem amateurish, especially the vocals. It just didn't hit my ears right
Out of all the albums that I've heard this is definitely one of them.
Zzzzzz
Nice melodies. Standard indie rock, very early 90s. Didn't interest me that much.
Cut your hair rules. I dig the rest. Not a giant pavement fan. But I dig it. And it’s a good listen. I’ve never really known where to categorize them. Weezer ish? Nah. I guess a sound truly their own. Nothing extremely ground breaking here. But it’s decent. Summer babes is my favorite song of theirs, not on this album.
Day 10 I've never heard of Pavement but them being a 90s band can either bode really well or really poorly. Silence Kid - 6 - it's fine. Nothing that really sticks out besides how the guitar player needs to be doing less. I think the voice is pretty nice in this one though. Elevate Me Later - 5 - sounds like every other soft rock band to me so far Stop Breathin - 7 - the guitar is better on this one because it let's the voice shine more. Cut Your Hair - 7 - this one just sounds fun Newark Wilder - 6 - like elevator music if it was rock Unfair - 5 - it has a fun kick to it from the guitar but it just reminds me of songs that do this type of beat better Gold Soundz - 4 - I don't usually care about lyrics too much but "and we're coming to the chorus now" right before the chorus is a goofy line that this band isn't equipped to make. Note that this isn't why it's a 4 btw. 5-4=Unity - 7 - weird one but not bad Range Life - 4 - too long for a song that wasn't very good Heaven Is A Truck - 3 - I should give it a 0 for the name alone but it does have some weird charm in the midst of the awful vocals and the barebones guitar. Not good by any means but higher than I would like to rate it. Hit The Plane Down - 3 - similarly bad to the last track. Fillmore Jive - 4 - sounds like a jumble of sounds more than actual music. There are some good parts but that will happen when you make seven minute songs. Overall: not into it. Too jumbled to work imo. 61/120 or about 50%
Hm, Pavement - not really my thing but there are definitely good elements to be found here. Haven't listened to them before. Suuuuper 90s which I do like, highlight for me was Cut Your Hair, love the ooh ooh ooohs but then Hit the Plane Down at the other end of the scale is like the opposite of feel-good music for me haha! The sounds are stressful for my brain and it really puts me in a weird mood. So not a high rating overall from me but definitely a mixed feeling throughout the album.
I was away in 1994, travelling in obscure parts of the world that wasn't playing the latest indie bands. I didn't miss much apparently
hoy me da terrible paja escribir una review, no me gusto el disco lesto 4/10
A little Velvet Underground, a little early Better than Ezra and POTUSA. A little too sneering for me; somehow the attitude doesn’t quite land right.
Tough listen. Was not really blown away.
Just OK.
Very generic grunge. Not surprised they aren't that popular.
Bit of a passive listen for me this one so score might not be a fair reflection. But maybe the fact that I was passive and a little bored maybe tells me something about the album - who knows
2+ because the music is quite good. But the lyrics and vocals kill it.
I wanted to like it but I didn’t
Boring!!!
Nor for me. Sounds like Captain Beefheart meet up with Death Cab for Cutie one night at a pub. 1 or 2 tracks were nice, but the off-key play was disturbing.
bad singer 3/10
Nothing special
Pitchfork special. Let's see what it got...HOLY SHIT A 10! So predictable. Tyler is gonna slobber all over this. Sounds like my old band. Sonic youth-light. Generally fine. Nothing great. Pioneers of the noodling high on the guitar neck that became a staple in crud hipster bands, so they should be in Guantonamo for that. Not as good as Frank Black. Lyrics are generally nonsense.
It just doesn't hit... 5-4=Unity slaps tho!
The lead singers voice is pretty bad. Like just talentless. he doesn't really sing, more rhythmically talks. All the other instruments play with different textures, and are pretty passable.
Whiney vocals, poor production, generally adolescent. Maybe an album for your teenage kids
Meh
Eh, didin't care much for this
Kind of a nothin burger. I think it was trying to be punk, in which case the amateurish album design makes sense, but the creativity the songwriters could show was often blocked by the lack of execution on its cooler hooks.
Not a fan
On one hand, I kind of like that drone guitar sound/grind. On the other, the effect is sort of ruined by the vocals. Overall, not the worst album I got here by far, but not an album that can take me places either. Just another mundane album that, almost 30 years later, offers little reason to pay it a visit.
Not a band I'd heard before although I knew of them.the singing was quite discordant and none of the songs grabbed me.
Awful.
Laughable singing, uninspired music. Just boring all around. 4/10.
Vocals feel familiar but couldn't really get into it.
It's not the kind of music I like.
Ehh... A little too "indie"? Wasn't exactly to my taste.
I was not familiar with the artist or any of the songs. One of the last songs was annoying and I did not care for it. The album as a whole was ok. I did not skip any of the songs. I have no desire to listen to this album again.
There were a couple good songs but for the most part I found it pretty uninteresting and bland
I'd never heard this album before, but it definitely felt like I had - feel like it sounds like a genericised version of a lot of the much better music that was coming out around that time. No real standout tracks, not unpleasant to listen to but not deserving of any more than a 2.
A drag. Feels much longer than it is
I think I'm either in a bad mood or I'm feeling more critical today, I don't know. Decent enough rock, but man does everything just blend together, which I hate. I want these albums to leave SOME kind of impression, bad or good. It's almost worse when they feel like they lack any personality at all.
I've only heard "Cut Your Hair" before and I don't know anything about Pavement. Just some regular 90s alt rock. Nothing particularly memorable and kind of gets annoying near the end. That last song just goes on forever, man. There's something "unfinished" about this album and I can't put my finger on it. Nothing really grabbed me and I blame the lack of polish.
Alternative/post-grunge rock album that sounds too much like Radiohead's weakest album (Pablo Honey). 2/5
Pavement is one of THE bands from the 90s
Never heard of them before. Seems ok on first listen. Stand outs: Range Life, Cut Your Hair, Gold Soundz. 2.5/5
Dull, just blurred into one thing, forgettable cali indie
Very dry...
I just don’t get the hype. A couple of good songs here and there, occasionally charming vocals, but the off key guitars and singing irritates. Not enough quality.
Atonal, early 90s indie. Reminds me some of Nada Surf but not near the same melodic enjoyment level.
Interesting punk album, lyrics and vocals were ok
Meh, emo rock maybe?
Songs: 5-4=Unity
Here's another album that should be more in my wheelhouse than it actually is. The main issue for me is that the lead singer isn't very good. If you're going to use that alt-rock, don't-hit-the-notes-or-follow-the-melody style, you've got to be good at it. This sounds mostly sloppy, not artistic. The music is pretty good, but this album didn't really do anything for me. 2 stars.
It's really hard to be nice to this... second album by this lot on here and I gave the last one a whopping 1/5. This is ever so slightly better, it's still full of "artsy" amateur DIY moments, but song structures are at least halfway normal. It's gone from being unlistenable garbage on the last album to boring 90s indie, but even that's a step up. 2/5.
Rough and raw sounding, some nice instrumental parts but overall not for me. Though did like Gold Soundz
Two in a row! I just don’t like the vocals. The music is decent, although it’s feels off balance at times.
Pretty boring and a bit whingey, but not terrible. 2/5.
Lackluster melodies and vocals, probably consistent with the genre but not particularly interesting. Felt a bit repetitive and all songs washed into one after a while. But the album was interspersed with slivers of edgy arrangements and cool instrumentals, which kept me enjoying it a little.
Generic early 90s rock
Ok but not really my bag
Some good songs but too long
did not seem to be a lot of new sounds here. Just okay to me.
Não é nem ruim nem bom
Sounded dull.
For all their popularity, I've heard very little Pavement. They fall into that category of "decent songs, bad singer" that I have trouble sticking with (Dinosaur Jr being at the front of that line). I do appreciate the songwriting in Pavement's work; it's pretty unique and has an earnestness to it that echoes some of the best writers like Lennon and Wilson.
Owww Goldilocks stuff, When you get a bowl of porridge and you stick that golden syrup overdosing bad boy in the science oven! You hit start and round it goes, Vrmmmmmm PING! It is done. Stirring it up like a tabloid with a government leak, you sit down and eat andddd some hot spots anddd some cold spots annnndd some spots are just right. You are satisfied but hope next time you get just the right mix
Meh. Simple, good as background music, nothing more.
Reminded me of several Minneapolis bands - Soul Asylum, Trip Shakespeare, Semisonic - but not as good. I was surprised that it was ranked so highly by a variety of sources. “One of the Nineties best albums!” - the nineties must have been a mediocre decade…
Some punk nonesense. I enjoyed some parts, but in general it's too much for me
meh
Pretty good
Not really my style.
All American band. Reminds me of the Pixies and Weezer.
Alright
Wilco does it better!
Nope
Mediocre.
Long album! Couple really liked
The guitars starting off a bit funky. The vocals are a bit airy. The guitars are sometimes good. The drums might be the best part. The vocals just make everything sound bad though. The backing vocals are probably the worst part.
Grungy, punky.. some classic rock vibes. Truthfully most tracks just sounded like noise. Some lyrics made me chuckle. 4=5 Unity is a cool track.
Couldn't get through more than the first half. Feel like it reminded me of the Clash? Idk, just not for me
Alt shitty rock
Not a fan
Whiny
I just found this boring personally
Could not get past the awful vocals. 1 star
I assume that the discordant vocals and lack of hooks is part of the point, but for me that makes this album a bit of a soup of sameness, and a grating soup at that. Grunge can sometimes reach the point of self-indulgently dour, and this album sits squarely in that category for me, not helped by the vocals. Standout Tracks: Elevate Me Later, Cut Your Hair Rating: 1.5
I remember this group from back when I was young. There is one song from this album that got a lot of airtime "Cut Your Hair". I didn't like that song back then because the singer sounded whiny and the music was kind of simple and lame sounding but I never listened to the whole album. Not that I have heard the whole thing I can definitely say that I do not like them at all. It seems that the singer sticks with his terrible talk singing and the music is pretty lame and uninspired throughout the whole album. Not something I would ever listen to again.
