I don't know how Malkmus got essentially a new band to see his vision, but it speaks to his songwriting that they understood how to execute. The perfect blend of art and chaos. Meticulously produced madness.

I like this. He’s not a good singer but the jams make up for that.

I mean I think it is OK. And I get they were an independent band doing this in the early 90s, but I feel there were other bands that did this style much better.
So this album is not bad. But it's not great. It doesn't feel to me like it is a must listen to album. It's a relatively generic 90s sound with not great vocals.
I enjoyed it. Saw them not too long ago. For sure a great live band.

Jazzier than I thought from only Cut your Hair! A very easy, interesting listen.
Honestly, I'm a little disappointed, I felt there was such potential with this album, and the result was okay. Decent 6.
just a really fun album. Stephen malkmus with his almost lazy vocals (in a good way) over poppy but still distorted guitars. love it.
It starts off slow, but you eventually start to appreciate Pavement's brand of subdued, lofi '90s rock. It offers something different from the louder, agressive grunge. There are some really nice melodic moments too, I enjoyed the hints of early Radiohead that I heard. Standout tracks are Cut Your Hair, Newark Wilder, and Hit the Plane Down.

Surprisingly fantastic record. Amazing instrumentation some of the riffs and solos sound amazing. Pretty consistent tracklist throughout. Got some great tracks overall great album strong 8
More "Pavement" (lol). On the list of the "Top Albums Ever Owned on CD and Kept in Charlie’s Car Back When He Used to Have a CD Player in His Car," Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain will forever hold the top place.
I liked this a lot. I've always been told to listen to Pavement but somehow never got around to it. I really like the energy, it feels like I'm in this chaotic playroom turned into recording session. There's something really effortless and playful about the album which I like. I'll need to listen more. 3/5

This should be something that I really love based on all my other musical tastes, 90's alt rock is my sweet spot after all. But I've just never really been into Pavement. I don't know, it's just lacking that something special that makes it standout to me. It was fine to listen to all the way through, but nothing struck me as exciting or fun. It was just kind of blandly there. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. It's a perfect neutral.
What an album. Eclectic mix of jazz and indie guitar rock. My favorite Pavement album as it balances their noisy guitar blasts with their unique but accessible melodic genius. Some of the most interesting and satisfying music made in the 90s 5 stars

WOW. Far, far better than I expected. I thought Pavement were supposed to sound like Tortoise and Blur’s eponymous album. I love Blur’s fifth album but… it really had to grow on me and I only put in so much effort because Blur are my favourite band. However, this record is filled with accessible indie rock (my favourite genre) alongside just the right amount of more unconventional singing and production. 5 stars!
Album 111 of 1001 Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Cut Your Hair Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is the second studio album by American indie rock band Pavement, released on February 14, 1994. It slipped by me. I was immersed in Sports Talk radio around this time. This made me think of Fountains of Wayne, who I came to know of later. Can't complain. Some catchy tunes. Some better than others. Probably blended into a lot of other music that was out at this time. Good stuff but doesn't really stand out, for me.
One of the best albums of the 90s, imo. I can hear a mellowing and maturity in the band's sound since Slanted & Enchanted, a trend that will continue through their career. So many great songs here and there are no tracks I would ever skip. I think this album has the most consistency and continuity of any Pavement album.
Never heard of Pavement before. will give them another listen.

Bloody good album oozing indie rock and shoegaze 90's vibes. Obviously took some The Pixies sounds and morphed them, and Cut Your Hair was, and still is, an absolute classic. Very nostalgic and stands up tall today.
I forgot how good this album was and still is. No fillers, all great tracks, with some bangers included, "Cut your hair" and "Range life" Great instrumentation and lyrics as always from pavement, even though i have no idea what they are singing about. Not my favourite Pavement album though, not a 5 star classic but definitely 4.5

I've never heard of Pavement before, but upon researching them, I learned that they are a 90's indie rock band. This can either go good, or bad. I find that there is no in between with indie. Upon listening, it is similar to Dinosaur Jr, or Sebadoh. I wasn't a fan of either of those acts, and I'm not a fan of these guys either. They're just a bunch of talentless morons making noise. At times their instruments are out of tune and they're too stupid to realize, or they just don't care. Also, the singer is tone deaf. Indie is a hard genre for me to get on board with. In my mind, they were never picked up by a major record label for a reason; Because they suck ass, which is definately the case here. Absolutely no redeeming qualities. Overall, a garbage album by a shitty band. Another album that has me scratching my head as to why it is included on this list. Can't wait to forget this garbage. Favourite songs: Cut Your Hair... I guess... Least favourite songs: Hit the Plane Down, Range Life, Unfair, Newark Wilder, 5-4=Unity 1/5
This was an album that seemed familiar but once I listened to it seemed very dislike what I thought. A 90s alternative album is usually right up my alley but this was like if a country writer wanted to make rock music. It wasn’t very good and the one song I did know couldn’t save this album. Was pretty surprised how much I disliked this one. 5.4/10

Pavement is one of those bands who I should be familiar with judging by the music I listen to, yet I've never intentionally listened to them until this point. This is a neo-psychedelic indie rock album with a heavy folk influence. The lyrics aren't terribly deep, but as a northern Californian, I quite enjoyed (all in good fun) the digs at southern California in 'Unfair.' In certain parts, the vocal delivery against the musical backdrop reminded me of the Velvet Underground. There are some really gorgeous moments on this album, including the closer which was perfectly placed.
Decent. They were definitely around in the 90s but I always bypassed them for some reason or another. Cut Your Hair is a cool song. First half is strong but second half is somewhat lacklustre.
Best Song: Stop Breathin. Even though I found the chorus a bit annoying, I liked the instrumental breakdown at the end. Worst Song: Range Life. Sounds like Beck in the worst way possible. Overall: Music that sounds "indie" without sounding like anything else. Plucky. Earnest. Boring.
I think I prefer the later pavement - this has some great songs but it begins to get a bit repetitive after a while.
This album is like wine, get's better as it ages.
One of my favorite records of all time. So many great tunes: starting with Cut Your Hair of course, but how about Gold Soundz and Range Life, and Stop Breathin’, and just about every song?? There’s a lax, loose composition combined with bouts of mad energy and nonsense (or what I haven’t been able to decipher). Brilliant record I have listened to lots and lots and never tire of.
Great from start to finish. Watch the video for the singles off this album, it's worth it.
This is a great album. Have listened to it many times and will continue to do so. I always go back and forth between if I like this one or Slanted and Enchanted better.

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is the second album by American indie rock band Pavement. It was a more successful album than their previous one since they adopted a more mainstream rock sound. The indie/alt/folk rock album was a critical success and was praised for being a vibrant and dynamic cornerstone of underground rock in the mid-90's. I thought this was a pretty good indie rock album and it provided a great soundtrack to end my workday. I would recommend this album to any rock lovers.
Pavement are a band I discovered through this project and who are decent, but not that exciting for my ears.

Amazing album
I had a strong Pavement phase in like the early 2000s but the sound kind of wore out on me. And this was never my favorite album, my top hits are all off the earlier low fi EPs and Slanted... not bad but I feel like the earlier stuff featured more interesting songwriting.
If I had heard this for the first time when I was like 15 it would probably be one of my favs ever. Doesn't quite resonate like that any more, but it's pretty good.

radiohead + cake, with a pinch of shoegaze grunge angst and a slight waft of psychedelia. I could probably listen to this on repeat.
Indie rock often is just too unpolished sounding for me and makes it seem amateurish, especially the vocals. It just didn't hit my ears right
Parts of this album gave me Weezer vibes but not as good. It wasn't a bad album but it was very middle of the road.
I enjoyed this at first, then I think their sound got old to me.
I had heard of Pavement and this album but I knew NOTHING on it and I was a freshman in college in the US in 1994. NO EXCUSE. It’s like Beck mixed with Husker Du, but you know that they also cover Minor Threat songs, but not tonight because they’ve got a hangover. I really liked it even if I can’t hum along to any of the songs now. Weird, that undefinable nature of enjoyable music. Other people probably hate it. Good thing I’m not them.
I'm not saying that the vocalist can sing, but his bad singing fits nicely with guitars. Also it's good to know who is the guy that beabadoobee wishes to be.
Incredible album! Just recently listened to this whole thing! Still enjoyed it the second time around! Pavement is such a great band,, so many incredible albums as well as this one! Really cant say anymore than what has already been said but a 10/10 album

By all means I should be a huge fan of Pavement’s stoner-esque irreverence and garage band sound, but the band has never stuck with me. Maybe it’s Malkmus’ whiny vocals and (to me) holier-than-thou attitude, maybe the instrumentals aren’t distinct enough from other 90s fare. In any case I’m always left feeling a bit weird after listening, like with this album - didn’t hate it, enjoyed some of the tracks a good deal, but felt like I should it enjoy it so much more, ya know?

One of the worst concert experiences I have ever had was seeing Pavement last year, but that had nothing to do with the band. Since then I have been working on regaining my love for them. In short, men are monster but Pavement rules and this album is one of their best, if not their very best.

Great writing. Catchy melodies. Emotion-filled lyrics. The unexperienced vocals compliment some tracks and hurt others. Overall, a fairly good album. 7/10 -> 4/5
Interesting and meaningless at the same time. Comes across as apathetic, smart, lazy, stoner rock, perfect for the 90s. The vocals are slightly meandering, reminds me of The Pogues a little bit. The music is generally alt rock, but also includes vibes of folk and southern rock. Favorite tracks: Unfair, Range Life, Cut Your Hair Least favorite tracks: 5-4=Unity, Hit the Plane Down, 4/5
3/5. A pretty fun grunge album with accessible songs but not enough for a high rating. It’s just not unique enough, mostly feels like it could be better but the lack of trying is the draw.

"Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" is the second album by American indie band Pavement. The album is noted as being more accessible than their debut "Slanted and Enchanted." I would say they're very equivalent. The music is also categorized as slacker inie and alt rock. I also heard elements of folk-country, jam band and at least one hard rock song. The themes are varied but several focus on the music industry with lyrics mentioning skateboards, plane crashes, girls and mocking The Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins. It's about time. The album had moderate succes. "Silence Kid" sounds like the band is setting up during rehearsals and then kicks into slow driving rock. The melody is brought in. Lead singer Stephen Malkmus with laid back vocals. I have no idea what this kid is about. Innocence? Drummer? Ecstasy? Interesting fact: Due an ink error, it appears as Slience Kit on the album cover. Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh and we're off with one of the catchier 90's songs in "Cut Your Hair." A pop melody. A break going into a great brief guitar solo. Malkmus is sarcastically attacking the importance of image in the music industry. Speaking of great 90's songs, "Gold Soundz" continues the wealth of catchy melodies. Malkmus is actually singing and showing emotion. The song builds with tremendous overlaying guitars. I think well deserving of Pitchfork naming it the best song of the 90's. The band goes slacker country-folk in "Range Life" with the guitar. And of course dissing STP and The Pumpkins. The albums ends with one of my Pavement songs in "Fillmore Jive." At the time, I didn't know they had jam band and Neil Young "Cowgirl in the Sand" in them. This is more of what Malkmus would do in his solo career. The songs starts slow and then alternates lyric verses with extended guitar solos three times. It tells the story of partying individually at like a frat party and then partying in the music industry. I recommend all five Pavement albums to some extent. Some more than others. I'd put this one in the middle but it has just some outstanding songs, some of their best. An overrode of great melodies. Highly recommended.

I grew up with people around me worshiping the ground Stephen Malkmus walked on, so I stayed back a bit with my adoration of Pavement. I heard it a lot in my teenage years, never disliked it, but it also never stood out for me, for whatever reason. Still, this is a great album. Unpolished pop songs with barbs here and there, but always melodic. And where the lo-fi sounds really give it its character, I sometimes, blasphemously, wouldn't have minded a little more polished sound.
Nice melodies. Standard indie rock, very early 90s. Didn't interest me that much.
Only a couple week spots. Not a fan of the slower songs but the rest holds up. Classic.
Great album that deserves another listen.
This feels like the missing link for everyone who cites The Velvet Underground as the indie rock progenitors. Straight line from them to Pavement to Kurt Vile.
Cut your hair rules. I dig the rest. Not a giant pavement fan. But I dig it. And it’s a good listen. I’ve never really known where to categorize them. Weezer ish? Nah. I guess a sound truly their own. Nothing extremely ground breaking here. But it’s decent. Summer babes is my favorite song of theirs, not on this album.

сразу скажем, что вокал кринж. местами просто ок, местами прям плохо. но вот музыкально это просто великолепно. сначала я думал поставить 2+, потом 3, но по итогу ставлю 4. ставлю 4, потому что это стоит послушать хотя бы один раз. тут есть и очень понятные паттерны, и эксперименты; микс очень плотный. дико кайфанул отдельно отмечу "Gold Soundz", которая написана в 7/8, и следующую за ней "5-4=Unity", которая написана в 5/4 во1 это смело, во2 это хорошо
И вновь смешанные ощущения. За странным вокалом скрывается прикольная выебонистость и чувствуется что люди любят музыку и то что делают
Ну, это всё-таки не просто школьники собрались в гараже рокешник полабать. Здесь есть что-то интереснее. Местами. В целом это довольно обычный инди-рок, иногда есть приколюхи с размерами, иногда то и дело появляется интересный солячок. Но есть проблема: он как бы даже и не запомнился ничем... А, нет, запомнился: вокалисту надо учиться петь, это точно... я готов был единицу влепить чисто за его корявый голос, потому что это больше на вой больного волка похоже.
Ну чё, снова пацанчики собрались побрынькать. Отметить могу только "hit the plain down", но даже его концовкой угробили. Не супер плохо, так что 2
Perhaps the biggest jump any of my ratings has taken upon re-listen, while this album may not be as blistering and aggressive as its older sibling, Slanted and Enchanted, its melancholic take on slacker rock verges on alt-country at points, but its folksier sound only adds to this album's sense of pure teenage unbeknown-angst. It's stripped down, and for that feels all the more earnest, with a driving guitar-drum 1-2 combo that keeps every song trucking along, and the lyrical beats also follow this same sense of thought-provoking, though never halted too long sense of anxiety that is the perfect embodiment of trying to escape a bittersweet feeling you don't understand the meaning behind. It may not be the loudest, or the angriest, or even the most thought-provoking album of the 90s, but it is exactly what the era needed, especially by the mid-90s. The time for anger and rage had passed, and while the mainstream still hadn't fully realized it, Pavement was right on the money right away, and that's not only impressive, but mildly humbling. Unsure why I had so many issues getting into this over a year ago, but I completely understand it now.
Only really liked that one song. Had to fast forward through 2 that got too screamy lol. Didn't hate it overall, didn't love it. 5/10
To me, this is nothing less than the quintessential 90's album. They've toned down their The Fall influences from the last album and mixed them with that slacker approach that they've come to embody. Malkmus' lyrics, which often sounds like they are improvised, are more concerned by how the words sound than by what they mean, yet he manages to deliver them in a way that makes them sensible and evocative. This is one of my favorite albums of all-time and listening to it never fails to make me happy.
I rarely enjoy the music from the 90s and this one does not differ. I still had an okay time with this one, especially the jazzy "5-4=Unity". It's still pretty much a product of its time, just like countless others.
Good album, its part of my regular playlist.
The singularity of this album lies in the fact of driving good melodies and contagious emotion through abstract, noisy and fuzzy music. I don't know how you make a such cohesive but chaotic album, but they did it and I enjoyed it. I didn't fully understand the whole thing as it was my first listen, but I'll certainly come back for more time with Pavement.

Day 10 I've never heard of Pavement but them being a 90s band can either bode really well or really poorly. Silence Kid - 6 - it's fine. Nothing that really sticks out besides how the guitar player needs to be doing less. I think the voice is pretty nice in this one though. Elevate Me Later - 5 - sounds like every other soft rock band to me so far Stop Breathin - 7 - the guitar is better on this one because it let's the voice shine more. Cut Your Hair - 7 - this one just sounds fun Newark Wilder - 6 - like elevator music if it was rock Unfair - 5 - it has a fun kick to it from the guitar but it just reminds me of songs that do this type of beat better Gold Soundz - 4 - I don't usually care about lyrics too much but "and we're coming to the chorus now" right before the chorus is a goofy line that this band isn't equipped to make. Note that this isn't why it's a 4 btw. 5-4=Unity - 7 - weird one but not bad Range Life - 4 - too long for a song that wasn't very good Heaven Is A Truck - 3 - I should give it a 0 for the name alone but it does have some weird charm in the midst of the awful vocals and the barebones guitar. Not good by any means but higher than I would like to rate it. Hit The Plane Down - 3 - similarly bad to the last track. Fillmore Jive - 4 - sounds like a jumble of sounds more than actual music. There are some good parts but that will happen when you make seven minute songs. Overall: not into it. Too jumbled to work imo. 61/120 or about 50%

Hm, Pavement - not really my thing but there are definitely good elements to be found here. Haven't listened to them before. Suuuuper 90s which I do like, highlight for me was Cut Your Hair, love the ooh ooh ooohs but then Hit the Plane Down at the other end of the scale is like the opposite of feel-good music for me haha! The sounds are stressful for my brain and it really puts me in a weird mood. So not a high rating overall from me but definitely a mixed feeling throughout the album.
Loved it! What a top album. Already liked a lot from here but loved listening to it a couple of times as a complete thing. Need to explore Pavement more

Suena como muchas cosas de los 90, pero poco como algo propio. El álbum junta tantos sonidos que al final lo único que queda de manifiesto es una impronta rockera un tanto estéril. No es que la música no tenga cierto encanto, de todos modos. Existen algunos momentos en que la distorsión parece más convencida, y en los que la banda pareciera mirar hacia adelante en vez de girar ciegamente en cualquier sentido.

no puedo escribir sobre este disco con objetividad simplemente porque lo amo. silent kit te introduce estilisticamente en lo que vas a escuchar y la cosa se pone melanco con una de mis favs, stop breathin. cut your hair es el unico hit que metio pavement, esta bien. que se yo gold soundz es un tema super nostalgico en el que cualquier persona que tenga una historia especial con la musica se puede sentir identificado, y range life tiene esas refes a los pumpkins y los stone temple pilots que son un refljeo de epoca: ellos, las estrellas, y nosotros los fracasados. el indie es uno de mis generos favoritos porque cuando saca un disco como crooked rain es imbatible. las canciones estan escritas por hombres adultos con problemas de hombres adultos: no hay pelados con voz de rana o rubias suicidas. vivir en el capitalismo tardio es soportar la sobreoferta, el estímulo constante y a la vez necesitar mas. es sentirse vacio incluso estando lleno. i wanna range life, if I could settle down....

Get this album should be on the list, but personally I just can’t seem to get into pavement, a lot of this just feels like a bit of a drag to me to listen too. A handful of enjoyable songs but album itself is pretty forgettable.

Tough listen. Was not really blown away.
I love this album. It defined a part of my life and it is really one of the the best of the low-fi indie rock genre in my opinion. Although it was never hugely successful, it had a strong cult following and I was 1000% a member of that cult. My friends and I used to parse out Steve Malkmus' clever/ironic lyrics and recite them as poetry to each other. Although I've moved past that degree of lead singer crush/hero worship, this is still a really well crafted album and these guys are great musicians. Now I can appreciate not just the hipster irony (I'm really over that part of it, actually) but the moments of touching pathos ... "Put it on a postcard: Dad, they broke me." Bit of a passive listen for me this one so score might not be a fair reflection. But maybe the fact that I was passive and a little bored maybe tells me something about the album - who knows
I enjoyed this album a lot. I liked the grungey-ness of it but it never went too far which suited it. At times he sounded a bit like Kurt but knew his limits I reckon. Would deffo listen again. Strong 3

This album is one of my favorites. It has a fantastic alternative rock style which combines low-effort musicianship with mature song writing. Has this free feel which I really like. Cut Your Hair is a classic ear worm. Stephen Malkmus is the Bob Dylan of mid 90's alt rock---if you can get over his terrible voice there's some great songs.
Reminds me of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. but a little easier to listen to. Not sure why a genre with so much vocal fry exists, this album could be stronger. Weak 4
Easy to listen to indie rock
Good album that reminds me of the raw underpinnings of the grunge movement. Unpredictable and melodic, the album is a quality grunge record.
I had not heard of this band or heard their music before. I like it and I am sure I would've liked it a lot back when it was released. Nice blend of garage-band indie sound with some good rock music. Sometimes the vocals grate on me a bit but I think they mean it to; just not always my thing.

Such a good record! Known this one for quite some years, and it aged greatly. Really laid back songs with the occasional rocking moments. The guitar melodies are really good, fit like a charm with Stephen's chilled vocal delivery. This record flies by in an instant and has high replay value! Good alternative rock album. Range Life and Elevate Me Later were the two that stuck out to me enough to save in Spotify.
I first heard of Pavement earlier this year (shout out to '60 Songs That Explain the 90's), so this was my first time listening to an album of theirs. It had some good songs on it, but nothing really stuck out to me as really memorable about it.
Nor for me. Sounds like Captain Beefheart meet up with Death Cab for Cutie one night at a pub. 1 or 2 tracks were nice, but the off-key play was disturbing.

I listened to this multiple times and overall just wasn’t feeling it. The songs sounded similar to one another and seemed kind’ve generic. Some of the songs were okay like Cut your hair, but it wasn’t enough to get me to like them. 1/5

I love indie rock for the most part, and I love 90's music, so what's not to like? Well, I'm not sure, but this just didn't click for me like it seems it did for a lot of other people. It's a classic album for a good reason, maybe I'll reliaten one day and have different feelings. 3.5/5

Hmm... I dunno where I stand on this. I love indie rock and I liked this album, but it didn't get its hooks into me as some other indie stuff. I think it'll grow on me over time. 4.5/5

Got a Silver Jew's album yesterday and a Pavement album today, interesting...I've known and loved Pavement's singles for a long time but I don't remember listening to this album through many times. I definitely will be again, there's some great tracks on here, apart from the obvious 3. It goes to show that a band doesn't have to take themselves too seriously to produce great music.
Meh. I get that it spawned a ton of indie bands, but the bands it inspired are not my favorite either.
Pitchfork special. Let's see what it got...HOLY SHIT A 10! So predictable. Tyler is gonna slobber all over this. Sounds like my old band. Sonic youth-light. Generally fine. Nothing great. Pioneers of the noodling high on the guitar neck that became a staple in crud hipster bands, so they should be in Guantonamo for that. Not as good as Frank Black. Lyrics are generally nonsense.

I like it a lot. Every song is extraordinary and I like the whole album, it is nearly perfect.
Really odd vocals off the bat, okay, that might be alright for this kind of 90s alt-ish feel. This makes me think of that one song that came across my Spotify discover, A.M. 180 by Grandaddy. So far, album isn't bad, a little bland. Oh, think I have heard Cut Your Hair before, it sounds pretty familiar. I can hear a little bit of Marcy Playground here, too, which is a very good thing. You know what, this is actually pretty good. Hit the Plane Down fucking sucks. The autoplay on Spotify put Spoon on next, and I suppose that was pretty apt.

I like Pavement. The famous singles here are Cut Your Hair, Gold Sounds and Range Life, all of which are excellent: hooky and lyrically cool. The opener Silence Kid and closer Fillmore Jive bookend the album nicely - Silence Kid kicks the album off with high energy and a good guitar riff while Fillmore Jive wraps things up using a slower tempo and some droning jamming. Some of the lesser-known tracks don't really stand out too much as individual songs, but everything works well together in the context of an album, which is probably the only way I'd really like to listen to this - this is a much better experience as a whole album than if individual tracks popped up randomly on a playlist, which I suppose is the point of the listening project. Other standouts: Elevate Me Later, Stop Breathin, 5-4=Unity for its jazzbo riffing

72/100: This was a good listen to. Vaguely grunge-y rock, on paper this is right up my alley. It's not that I didn't like it, it's just I feel like I should have liked it even more than I did. It's like the ingredients were all there for it to be a really loveable album. The cook wasn't in the kitchen though, I suppose. It's hard to put a finger on it, I guess it sort of felt like Pavement just kinda skated their way through this album without a whole lot of emotion put in. Now that I've had that thought, they do somewhat remind me of a less emotional and energetic Radiohead. Maybe if I ever get sick of Radiohead I'll explore this group more.
The lead singers voice is pretty bad. Like just talentless. he doesn't really sing, more rhythmically talks. All the other instruments play with different textures, and are pretty passable.

Firstly, very much in this album's favour, it slags off the Smashing Pumpkins, and my kiddiwinks, you should all have realised by now that the Smashing Pumkpins are perhaps the worst band of all. The saluteworthy lyrics run: Out on tour with The Smashing Pumpkins Nature kids I, they don't have no function I don't understand what they mean And I could really give a fuck Billy Corgan, walking evidence that some kids really shouldn't be told they're special, got so blubby over these lines that he had Pavement dropped from that year's Lollapalooza and claimed Pavement were jealous of his Cure-knock-off, high-school-D&D-Wicca, self-pitying, self-important tripe. Pavement were clearly the heroes of that situation, and Billy Corgan acting so characteristically just makes one mock him all the fiercer. But what about the album itself? It can't depend solely on the goodwill attained by striking a deserved target. And it's an okay album. It's decent, enjoyable, acceptable, fine. This is in part because on Crooked Rain Crooked Rain they largely, but not wholly, forgo aping the Fall, an impersonation that ruined their previous album Slanted and Enchanted (you know, Mark E. Smith was still going in 1994, and he kept at his singular coalface until he dropped in 2018, so what was the point in mimicking him?). Rather, the style employed on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain lies steadfast within the American college rock Weltenshauung, all quirky hooks, tasteful use of fuzz guitar and mildly absurdist lyrics that purport to convey greater meaning by being meaningless. I've always felt a bit of a chilly wind from college rock, as it seems to focus more on being clever than good. Of course, cleverness and quality are in no way mutually exclusive, but likewise they are in no way mutually inclusive: cleverness too often leads to that vile enemy of art, good taste. Yeah, it's that tastefulness that prevents this from being a great album. It's a fun journey while it's ticking along, but for all the overt oddness dotted throughout the album, it comes across as ultimately conservative. Its weirdness is not the kind of weirdness that'd alienate a girl you'd brought back to your room who preferred Mariah Carey, and thus its weirdness sounds shallow and untrustworthy ("Yeah, I'm, like, interesting and uncompromising in my music, but I ain't scaring off the PUSS-AY!"). Still, a high three, along with a bonus star for pissing off Billy Corgan.

I just saw Pavement live in person three nights ago, so this has been very fresh in my mind. Great record, I go back and forth which album of theirs is my favorite, and this one is always middle of the pack. Great to listen to it again a few days after seeing so many of these songs live.

Very 90s like weezer
Though they may not play fast and loose with song structures like the Grateful Dead or Phish, Pavement has the soul of a jam band. One of those rare albums where the back half is livelier than the front.

Here's a really nice album by a band I have never heard before. Pavement is an Indie Rock group from California, created in late 80s. They rose to fame as a completely underground band, refusing to give live shows at the beginning, which created a sort of legendary status. This, together with a rather experimental approach to the compositions on the album, was what most likely put it on the list of greatest albums ever. Is it enough? We have seen records here, that didn't even have half of those accolades, yet it is still surprising to see more 'just good' albums. Crooked Rain Crooked Rain has 12 songs, and most of them have a certain gimmick, or a style, by which they are composed. Each song starts as a typical pop/rock tune, that you could hear in a radio everyday, but by the midpoint of it, it turns into a very alternative, interesting and original sequence. As an example, first song of the album "Silence Kid", starts as a sort of soft rock with a cowbell, and then breaks the mold and decomposes itself, together with a vocalist, who clearly doesn't care about clean singing. Yet the song has its charm and stays with you for a while, similarly as the rest of the album. It is a very pleasant surprise and a big candidate for an album I will come back to again.

Kind of a nothin burger. I think it was trying to be punk, in which case the amateurish album design makes sense, but the creativity the songwriters could show was often blocked by the lack of execution on its cooler hooks.

Reminds me of early Weezer with untuned guitars and Peavey practice amps for the guitar distortion. Loose, jammy tunes with wandering tempi making for a very live performance recorded in the studio sound. With no click track feel. I will check out more of this band in the future. They have an interesting sound that I am not familiar with, reminds of early Indie Rock.

Fun indie rock
I was in college when this album came out, and I probably caught "Range Life" or "Cut Your Hair" on the radio at the time. But I never really took the time to get into Pavement's music. I'm happy to admit I was off the mark back then, because this album is pretty brilliant. It fits in perfectly with what was going on in music in 1994, but Pavement has a musical depth lacking in a lot of their peers. The album is musically much smarter than it pretends to be, kind of in the same vein as some of Alex Chilton and/or Big Star's work. There are some nice jangly country rock-ish sounds and hints of a melodic pop hook here and there. But it's layered under a prickly, noisy veneer with strategic uses of dissonance and quiet. Stephen Malkmus' laid back, slacker-y vocals belie some surprisingly poetic and affecting lyrics - musings on war, love, disaffection and self-doubt. This is the kind of album I just want to hear over in over because there's so much in there to hear. I really loved hearing it today. I get some Siamese Dream vibes, self-title Foo Fighters as well. Vocals sound like Rivers Cuomo out of breath. That's not a compliment. It feels like something I could've created on my own. I guess that's the point though.

Surprising, Silence kid started out really not to my taste. but quickly pivoted to a song I could listen to, as were most of the ones in this album.
On one hand, I kind of like that drone guitar sound/grind. On the other, the effect is sort of ruined by the vocals. Overall, not the worst album I got here by far, but not an album that can take me places either. Just another mundane album that, almost 30 years later, offers little reason to pay it a visit.

When I was a kid, I was riding a bike when I got caught in a crooked rain, I ended up slipping and ripping my knee open on the pavement, blood and shredded skin everywhere. Anyway, I'd rather relive that experience than listen to this snoozefest of an album again. "I need to sleep" sings the vocalis on the last song, boy do I have an album for him!
Perhaps the most important underground band since the velvet kind? I believe the Onion was right when they wrote that Pitchfork wrote “In the end, though music can be brilliant at times, the whole medium comes off as derivative of Pavement.” 'Gold Soundz' really is a terrific track.
The lo-fi approach almost feels like a direct attack on the growing grunge sound of the same era. Still noisy as hell, but with absolutely no obvious attempt at writing something even resembling a hit. Also the fact that Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins was genuinely furious at the band for referencing them in Range Life is hilarious!
Laughable singing, uninspired music. Just boring all around. 4/10.

Wasn't sure what to think going in to this. It was not bad. I could see this band going on my shuffle. Without knowing any musical terms (im learning) I would describe this as upbeat but slightly angry rock. Sounds kind of familiar but at the same time foreign. 4/5

It's not the kind of music I like.
Compared to the first album that I reviewed for Pavement, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain is a slight improvement into the "okay". I like a lot of indie rock, and music that is Pavement-adjacent, but this album still only feels "okay" at best.
One of my absolute favorites of the 90' indie boom, I also think it's pavements best, with classics like stop breathing, cut your hair, and of course Gold Soundz, Crooked Rain Crooked rain had Stephen Malkmus and gang capture lightning in a bottle.

At the time the Pavement appeared they felt like a nice break from the testosterone driven grunge clones that dominated the scene. Too bad they turned out to be a bunch of smug jerks at times, too clever for other people's good and platitudes about what is cool. Musically I still love this but it was the last Pavement album I enjoyed. Go listen to Slanted and Encanted to hear what the band could've been
