Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Meh. Typical mid 90s alt rock music.

Nothing special, don't know what else to say.

Hot dog! More generic trash indie folk music! I definitely needed to listen to this album before I die!

Absolute Garbage

Couldn't wait for the end. 0.3

It's not a phase, mom!

Liner notes called this “the definitive 90s Indie Album “ - yup, sucks like a bucket of ticks. The vocalist sounds like he’s dying, and the musicality of the band is barely above garage level. Checks all the boxes for 90s crap.

Not really my kind music. Didn't love it didn't hate it

Nah. 1.5

“Jingly” instrumentals nestled between atonal, meandering messes of songs.

It's okay, but I got bored with it before the half-way point. Would not recommend this to anyone.

This indie album drifts on slacker guitars wobbling between jangle and distortion, loose melodic bass, and unshowy drumming, with half-mumbled, half-sarcastic vocals that feel so washed out the music loses its color, leaving me quietly turning away in boredom.

Not my stuff, at all. They're too awkward, sounds like sad and shy Pixies, who don't care to learn their instruments.

the lyircs are so dumb and the main singer's voice is just barely tolerable. This just isn't what i expected

90s drivel

I genuinely cannot fathom how this album was released. Some of the most amateurish production, basic song structures, and a vocal performance thay is both screechy and airy as if the songs were written for another vocalist for a higher range. Absolutely baffling how this album fails in pretty much every capacity. Zero redeeming qualities

crocked brains

yuck. didnt know what i was listening to - and no cohesion

Track 1 needs more cowbell. Didn't relish this one at all on the whole. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): None ⭐: Ambiguous on this one

i hear another way too over-hyped album, in the same vein as Jeff Mangum's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea .... life's way too short for Pitchfork-promoted hipster rubbish. maybe it's me and i just don't get it, but all i hear is a dull, uninteresting, badly performed, atonal cacophony fronted by a singer who cannot sing. if i'm in the mood for Slacker Rock (not so often), then i'd much rather be listening to Will Toledo. i'm not the slightest convinced that if i persevere, there will be a eureka moment where everything suddenly clicks, i don't feel any time spent getting to know the songs is time well-invested. There isn't a rush of excitement, no elevated pulse, no rush of dopamine; just the tedium of wondering how soon it'll be over and i can put on something enjoyable. There's an abundance of fantastic music out there, so why waste time on this ? it's a 1.5 star rating which i will downgrade to a 1 (no half stars possible). just who the fck compiled this 'revered' 1001 albums list ? most of my assignments/recommendations thus far have been average at best.

Say didn't listen

This was bollocks. Bland indie rock. I’d heard the name previously but never ventured into listening to them. Not for me.

I hated this tbh. The vocals are whiny and put through some filter, I couldn’t stand them. The instrumentation was better but this a solid 1 star for me.

I remember the days in the late 70ies, when I went to the local music store to check out the latest fuzz pedal. It sounded exact like this. After 15 minutes the guy at the desk asked me to leave the store (and he was ansolutely right - I knew just 3 chords) Who the hell had the motivation to create a record from this noise?

Indie Rock / Alternative Rock / Folk Rock / Psychedelic Rock albym from an American band that wasn't successful in their home country, and having listenrd to it I trying to fathom why it was a top 20 hit in the UK. The music isn't bad, but the vocals are dire, painful to listen to, and I'm being polite.

"Pavement-Crooked Rain" is insignificant, boring crap I've never heard of, as far as I can remember. Every shitty "haircut" is a once-in-a-century event compared to it.

Hard rock. Good guitar work, but that’s it.

This sound just isn't really my thing at all

RUIM DEMAIS

It's like The Thrills took heroin and made another album. Who gave these guys a recording contract? Complete and utter bollox

Wow this did not hit right for me. It was excruciating listening to this.

smug, clever-clever, herky-jerky indie rock.

Really really subpar music absolutely decimated by some of the worst vocals I've ever heard

Bands that have a singer that "Can't sing" has a very big hit and miss ratio. I like Interpol and modest mouse because they have "something" in their voices. This is a bit to regular "bad" singer for me. Often the music and vibe has to carry and compliment the vocals. some songs work and those are pretty easy to spot on the views/listens. but the only one kinda liked was "Cut your hair"

Not for me

I couldn't get into it. Some of the songs were fine, but there were far too many moments where I wondered "is this album over yet?". It wasn't even a long album.

The singing is like nails on a chalkboard.

Man I just can't get past the vocals on here. They're rough at best. They're bad enough that it really just ruined the album.

This album isn't doing much for me. There's nothing offensively bad about it, but it's difficult to stay engaged even when musically intriguing moments happen. The vocals are mixed in a way that makes me feel like I'm struggling through a fog to get to the good shit. Never a good sign when listening to an artist inspires me to immediately go listen to someone else. Range Life is a great little track, though.

Very very meh

When you want everyone to think that you're Blur, but you really suck at songwriting and sounding like Blur.

Nothing special here. Doesn't deserve to be on the list.

Didn’t like it

Not for me. 1/5

I didn’t like this at all. I didn’t like the songs, and really did not like the vocals. No redeemable qualities for me.

The band famously loved by Pitchfork. Never heard them, lets see. Silence Kid has an AC/DC vibe to it, kinda nice Ok everything after that has been the sort of boring shoe-gazing pretentious nonsense I'd expect from Pitchfork's Favorite Band

Jesus christ this is one of if not the worst albums Ive heard and if it’s not the worst it competes with their other albums. Not one second of this album was in any way successful in my mind. No need to ever hear this gnarly yucky voice or music again.

This band sucks your grandmother's ass. Utter bullshit and insulting. I lived through this band's "heyday" and so I "get" what they're doing and stop letting yourself be fooled - this is all one giant middle finger to you and everyone attempting to create and enjoy music. A blueprint for the worst of 20yr olds' GenX sarcasm that attempted to come across as cool and flippant, which somehow amazingly even comes across in the music itself....fk. For that feat alone maybe I should give them points. 0/10 0 stars

Why do so many stoner-rock bands have bad singers. He sounds like the karaoke act who gets lots of encouraging applause because he keeps trying to hit moderate notes and misses badly. This is really bad.

First listen Saved 2/12 Top track: Cut Your Hair

Pavement sucks

Can’t sing. Can’t play. Can’t write. Can’t produce. They weren’t signed to a major label for a reason (or several).

p725. 1994. 1 star. Desperately average garage band with no tunes and a vocalist that can't sing. Most of this is just noise. WTF is on the list?

1. kid - 0 2. elevate me - 0 3. breathing - 1 4. cut your hair - 1 5. uuilder - 0 6. unfair - 0 7. gold - 0 8. unity - 1.5 9. range life - 1.5 10. truck - 1 11. plane - 0 12. jive - 1

Monotonous tuneless but not excruciating!

Ok, how does this band have two records on this list. I just can’t get it.

Not my style.

Once again, not my preferred style. Sounded off-key and grating but I think that's the point.

I just didn’t like this one. I couldn’t get into any of the songs, and the lead singer’s voice was grating for me throughout. 🤷🏽🤷🏽🤷🏽

Not my style of music

Wow - wasn't sure what to expect from this one, but that was pretty lame... I read that Pavement and their "low-fi sound" was pushing back on Grunge... I guess "low-fi" is code for lazy, sloppy, skater drool, with uninspiring lyrics... Pretty sure that my college band in the early 80's had a better sound than this band... There were some great bands in the 90's for sure, but this isn't one of them... Only decent song IMO was "5-4+Unity" - but that's probably because it reminded me of some other song, and "Hit The Plane Down" is definitely among the worst songs that I've ever heard... Not sure what qualifies this as being in the 1,001 Albums list, but lazy, whiney, slop is not my idea of brilliance...

I’d never heard of this band before. I thought they set up a variety of interesting grooves, demonstrating varied musical influences. Unfortunately, their lead singer was awful. Initially, I thought he was trying to emulate Lou Reed (not a high aspiration), but eventually I decided he simply was tone deaf. I don’t need to ever hear this album again.

Oh my god, I really don't like it.

not sure they knew how to play their instruments, couldn't listen to it all the way through - songs were ridiculously long too

Reminded me somewhat of the Velvet Underground. However, this album wasn't for me. I did find one track on the album on the track that I liked - 'Silent kid', but that's all I'm afraid. Overall a one star from me, but I can understand why others might rate it higher

I've never heard of Pavement before, but upon researching them, I learned that they are a 90's indie rock band. This can either go good, or bad. I find that there is no in between with indie. Upon listening, it is similar to Dinosaur Jr, or Sebadoh. I wasn't a fan of either of those acts, and I'm not a fan of these guys either. They're just a bunch of talentless morons making noise. At times their instruments are out of tune and they're too stupid to realize, or they just don't care. Also, the singer is tone deaf. Indie is a hard genre for me to get on board with. In my mind, they were never picked up by a major record label for a reason; Because they suck ass, which is definately the case here. Absolutely no redeeming qualities. Overall, a garbage album by a shitty band. Another album that has me scratching my head as to why it is included on this list. Can't wait to forget this garbage. Favourite songs: Cut Your Hair... I guess... Least favourite songs: Hit the Plane Down, Range Life, Unfair, Newark Wilder, 5-4=Unity 1/5

Crooked pain...

I normally quite enjoy lo-fi but this was hard to get into Can’t see myself ever revisiting it

I listened to this multiple times and overall just wasn’t feeling it. The songs sounded similar to one another and seemed kind’ve generic. Some of the songs were okay like Cut your hair, but it wasn’t enough to get me to like them. 1/5

flash game music be like, aivan vittumainen 90 LUVUN VITTTTU INDIE ROCK MIKSI NIITÄ ON NIIN PALJON??????????????????????????? ainakaan ei ole britti tällä kertaa... noh.. on muutama ilonpilkku, valonaihe joitain SEKTIOITA, SEKTIOITA biiseissä ei siis koko biisejä...aivan perseestä tällästä en kuulostaa kun heh, pää osuisi TIENKIVEYKSEEN ja päässä hörisisi ja kuolet. ja stop breathin

Aw man pavement again? Naw

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: No, just doesn’t sound right and I don’t see the appeal in this, the vocals just sounds so off compared to the backing sound/instruments Favourite song: didn’t have one

not for me.

Tää ei oikeen säväyttänyt mua. Ihme indiehönkimistä. 1/5

When I was a kid, I was riding a bike when I got caught in a crooked rain, I ended up slipping and ripping my knee open on the pavement, blood and shredded skin everywhere. Anyway, I'd rather relive that experience than listen to this snoozefest of an album again. "I need to sleep" sings the vocalis on the last song, boy do I have an album for him!

Dollar store Weezer. No thanks…

Started off good, I even saved a song. Then descended into such nonsense I couldn't finish it. Seems like the band got themselves into a room and played any old rubbish and passed it off as an album.

AAARGH!

This is what happens when you try to make "more accessible rock" that of "Slanted and Enchanted". It's accessible for anyone, but admired by no one.

Didn't really gel with any of this.

Punt gemaakt.

dont like this album, dont like the voice, really didnt like the first like 6 songs. after that it got a little better. will not listen again.

Turned it off halfway through too sad.

First one I gave up on. Nothing memorable or catchy about it, just people jangling instruments for an hour.

I’m not wasting my time on this album, it’s like 400 songs long. I listened to about 10 of the songs and then became incredibly bored 1/5

Not an album for a Monday

I feel like these lads might have the ability to write some decent tunes but they’ve gone out of their way to make some very unpleasant sounds. What’s the need?

meh alternative

I'll rate it later.
