Reviews (page 6 of 8)

First time hearing this album, enjoyed it

almost interesting

Strong start, mid middle, decent finish - track 3 brilliant

I enjoyed this, lots of great instrumentals! Personally I liked the first half of this album better nevertheless still a good listen, I’ll give it 3 stars but it might go up in the future for me with some more listens but I had a good time with this

COWBELL!!! This album was pretty damn good! Glad I got to hear it before I died. I enjoyed the first Some songs I added a couple to my favs: Silence Kid & Cut Your hair Unfair has such a 'Blur' vibe to it.

mostly downtempo experimental indie rock, I felt a lot of cohesivity in the album and appreciated that! nice taste of the 90s, I liked Unfair the most, followed by Fillmore Jive and 5-4=Unity

Did kinda like it to be honest, nothing really in there that I’d listen to again in a hurry but I dug it

Best Indie rock album so far. It is funny, and It is good. Way better then Klaxons e Arcade Fire for sure (the ones that I listened so far). Maybe I will listen to more Pavement in the Future.

i know like two pavement songs, neither on this album. lets see whats good. kinda whiny Overall a good sound but the vocalist kept me from loving this

If someone were to describe this album to me, it would check all the boxes. But it’s never quite clicked for me when listening. The tone deaf singing (purposeful as it may be) doesn’t really hit for me. Nor does most the songwriting which I find to be pretty boring. I still respect pavement and it’s fans, it’s just not for me, not right now at least.

This album was alright. I’d say that the singer’s voice is a bit of an acquired taste but the general sound of the band is good. Good, but not memorable. I will say I got a kick out of 5-4=Unity which I interpreted as a take on Brubeck’s Take 5.

Pavement is fine. There are some songs that really hit but the full albums have yet to get me to the point that everyone gushes to me about. It may be because I just missed the time where they felt unique and that they inspired so many other bands that have sounds I got introduced to first but I hope one day I get it.

OOH OOH OH OOH OOH OOOH

Love me some 90s indie rock

Lo-fi vibes indeed, never heard pavement before but its cool to hear a new sound from the 90s

This one is tough. Really enjoyed the first few songs but it failed to keep my interest throughout. Kind of disappointing. Still loved the nod to Take Five though.

An interesting one. Sometimes melodic and breezy, sometimes prickly and unfriendly, occasionally both at once. The whole sleazy downbeat indie vibe here is not really one I can get 100% behind, but a solid album with a spirit all its own. Best song: Gold Soundz

Pretty standard 90s indie slacker stuff. Dude really needs to stick to his baritone register; every time he tries to sing high, it’s like nails on a chalkboard. Could definitely use some more memorable riffs and melodies.

An alright alternative rock album, as with many on this list (unfortunately) nothing really stood out.

Have definitely heard of Pavement, but this is my first time listening. They're not bad at all, a sort of alt-rock outfit that meanders through some different genres along the way. I'm enjoying it but not super impressed. Also the vocalist reminds me of Lou Reed, a lot. Not always a compliment. Still, decent album, I've got no problem with this aside from the fact that I wish it were more remarkable. Favorite tracks: Elevate Me Later, Range Life. Album art: Pretty cool collage going on here, the picture in the middle is two hands grasping a receipt? The bordering design is really cool though, and the font is great. 3/5

Good not great

Some ok songs, bit whiny

This album is very much a product of its time. It was alright, not really my thing. I thought it sounded like something my husband would love, but he says he never liked Pavement. Sorry, Pavement.

This has some moments while you keep listening. It's so focused on being indie that it seems like it has attitude for the sake of it. I know of the band and know they are big in their circles, not especially loving it even for the genre but they seem like they helped set the trend for later bands I've enjoyed. Doubt I'll relisten but I get why this is on a 1,001 list.

It's fine. I liked it. No stand out tracks for me. All just kind of blended.

Indie-feeling rock, with some definite punk/garage influences

Fikk aldri taket på Pavement på 90-tallet. Har fortsatt samme utfordring 🙄

Indie animadillo. Ni fu ni fa.

Not my favourite Pavement album but I think thats because its not the one I owned as a child.

Liked it, but I think the debut album might be better

I liked it. At least half of it. The other half was a bad trip.

Pavement has sadly never really been my favourite 90s alt rock band. I find their sound a little off-kilter in a way that I don't really enjoy. "Harness Your Hopes", off another album is amazing, but I can't bring myself to listen to the rest of their work.

Probably a 3.5. This album was pleasant to listen to, but it didn't offer much variety and wasn't too impressive (i.e. the sound was pretty slow and simple overall).

Not bad. Probably wouldn’t turn it on, but might not turn it off.

Not really my scene, but perfectly listenable. Cut Your Hair and Gold Soundz were highlights.

It’s good but I wouldn’t rave about it

So this album is not bad. But it's not great. It doesn't feel to me like it is a must listen to album. It's a relatively generic 90s sound with not great vocals.

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed, I felt there was such potential with this album, and the result was okay. Decent 6.

It starts off slow, but you eventually start to appreciate Pavement's brand of subdued, lofi '90s rock. It offers something different from the louder, agressive grunge. There are some really nice melodic moments too, I enjoyed the hints of early Radiohead that I heard. Standout tracks are Cut Your Hair, Newark Wilder, and Hit the Plane Down.

I liked this a lot. I've always been told to listen to Pavement but somehow never got around to it. I really like the energy, it feels like I'm in this chaotic playroom turned into recording session. There's something really effortless and playful about the album which I like. I'll need to listen more. 3/5

Silence Kid // Elevate Me Later // Newark Wilder // Fillmore Jive

A nostalgic 3 👍🏼 it’s okay this.

This should be something that I really love based on all my other musical tastes, 90's alt rock is my sweet spot after all. But I've just never really been into Pavement. I don't know, it's just lacking that something special that makes it standout to me. It was fine to listen to all the way through, but nothing struck me as exciting or fun. It was just kind of blandly there. I don't hate it, but I don't love it. It's a perfect neutral.

Album 111 of 1001 Pavement - Crooked Rain Crooked Rain Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Cut Your Hair Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is the second studio album by American indie rock band Pavement, released on February 14, 1994. It slipped by me. I was immersed in Sports Talk radio around this time. This made me think of Fountains of Wayne, who I came to know of later. Can't complain. Some catchy tunes. Some better than others. Probably blended into a lot of other music that was out at this time. Good stuff but doesn't really stand out, for me.

Never heard of Pavement before. will give them another listen.

Decent. They were definitely around in the 90s but I always bypassed them for some reason or another. Cut Your Hair is a cool song. First half is strong but second half is somewhat lacklustre.

I think I prefer the later pavement - this has some great songs but it begins to get a bit repetitive after a while.

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is the second album by American indie rock band Pavement. It was a more successful album than their previous one since they adopted a more mainstream rock sound. The indie/alt/folk rock album was a critical success and was praised for being a vibrant and dynamic cornerstone of underground rock in the mid-90's. I thought this was a pretty good indie rock album and it provided a great soundtrack to end my workday. I would recommend this album to any rock lovers.

Ihan hyvää alternative rockia. Ajoittain aika Radiohead/Muse tyylistä

I had a strong Pavement phase in like the early 2000s but the sound kind of wore out on me. And this was never my favorite album, my top hits are all off the earlier low fi EPs and Slanted... not bad but I feel like the earlier stuff featured more interesting songwriting.

ok alt-rock

Parts of this album gave me Weezer vibes but not as good. It wasn't a bad album but it was very middle of the road.

I enjoyed this at first, then I think their sound got old to me.

erg 90s, niet super interressant

By all means I should be a huge fan of Pavement’s stoner-esque irreverence and garage band sound, but the band has never stuck with me. Maybe it’s Malkmus’ whiny vocals and (to me) holier-than-thou attitude, maybe the instrumentals aren’t distinct enough from other 90s fare. In any case I’m always left feeling a bit weird after listening, like with this album - didn’t hate it, enjoyed some of the tracks a good deal, but felt like I should it enjoy it so much more, ya know?

3/5. A pretty fun grunge album with accessible songs but not enough for a high rating. It’s just not unique enough, mostly feels like it could be better but the lack of trying is the draw.

Not quite my tempo.

Only really liked that one song. Had to fast forward through 2 that got too screamy lol. Didn't hate it overall, didn't love it. 5/10

I rarely enjoy the music from the 90s and this one does not differ. I still had an okay time with this one, especially the jazzy "5-4=Unity". It's still pretty much a product of its time, just like countless others.

Interesting. The valleys in this album are very low, but the highs in it are very high. Tie goes to my overall vibe for the album, which is positive

this was kinda just a polished version of what i assume Car Seat Headrest sounds like

Can’t get past the vocals honestly. Fun instrumentals and the lyrics are fine but he needs to clear his throat

Eh. Not a fan. Too slow for my taste. Got Bob Dylan vibes.

I really liked the more mellow songs instead of the brash grunge/punk rock inspired ones.

Get this album should be on the list, but personally I just can’t seem to get into pavement, a lot of this just feels like a bit of a drag to me to listen too. A handful of enjoyable songs but album itself is pretty forgettable.

Enjoyable but nothing grabbed me.

Alt 90s dropping by

Torn between 3 & 4 stars here. It’s a good album. Uneven in spots. But I have fond memories of it as well. 75/100 4/5

I enjoyed this album a lot. I liked the grungey-ness of it but it never went too far which suited it. At times he sounded a bit like Kurt but knew his limits I reckon. Would deffo listen again. Strong 3

I had not heard of this band or heard their music before. I like it and I am sure I would've liked it a lot back when it was released. Nice blend of garage-band indie sound with some good rock music. Sometimes the vocals grate on me a bit but I think they mean it to; just not always my thing.

Rating: 6/10

Not bad but also just ok

Good alternative rock album. Range Life and Elevate Me Later were the two that stuck out to me enough to save in Spotify.

I first heard of Pavement earlier this year (shout out to '60 Songs That Explain the 90's), so this was my first time listening to an album of theirs. It had some good songs on it, but nothing really stuck out to me as really memorable about it.

Dated but not as catchy or enjoyable as other albums from the same era

massa até mas meio experimental algumas

Disco de puro grunge noventero. Mucho distorsoneo y sonido sucio. Está bien, pero no me ha convencido

No one falls in love to Pavement.

I love indie rock for the most part, and I love 90's music, so what's not to like? Well, I'm not sure, but this just didn't click for me like it seems it did for a lot of other people. It's a classic album for a good reason, maybe I'll reliaten one day and have different feelings. 3.5/5

These guys were pretty big where I grew up in the 90’s. This just feels like a one idea album to me.

Listened Before? N Hey, not bad! Indie rock isn't a thing for me.. but it feels nostalgic for the mid-90s. I liked it, and I really like "Cut Your Hair" since I've heard it before. Overall, I wouldn't just sit down and listen to it, but I liked it enough to finish it all the way. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Cut Your Hair

really like them etc etc

Enjoyable, pre-Strokes garage rock. A little slow at times but very emotionally driven. Builds on the late 70's post-punk model.

Meh. I get that it spawned a ton of indie bands, but the bands it inspired are not my favorite either.

It was ok I guess

Nice album from the band I never heard about…

Tosi kivaa musiikkia!

Really odd vocals off the bat, okay, that might be alright for this kind of 90s alt-ish feel. This makes me think of that one song that came across my Spotify discover, A.M. 180 by Grandaddy. So far, album isn't bad, a little bland. Oh, think I have heard Cut Your Hair before, it sounds pretty familiar. I can hear a little bit of Marcy Playground here, too, which is a very good thing. You know what, this is actually pretty good. Hit the Plane Down fucking sucks. The autoplay on Spotify put Spoon on next, and I suppose that was pretty apt.

There are 3-4 really great songs, the rest seem fine.

72/100: This was a good listen to. Vaguely grunge-y rock, on paper this is right up my alley. It's not that I didn't like it, it's just I feel like I should have liked it even more than I did. It's like the ingredients were all there for it to be a really loveable album. The cook wasn't in the kitchen though, I suppose. It's hard to put a finger on it, I guess it sort of felt like Pavement just kinda skated their way through this album without a whole lot of emotion put in. Now that I've had that thought, they do somewhat remind me of a less emotional and energetic Radiohead. Maybe if I ever get sick of Radiohead I'll explore this group more.

I liked it a lot more than expected. 3/5

Should like this more.

Interesting variety of sounds and styles, sounds experimental and grungy. Going to check this album out again.

Cool idea

Sounded like the seed to 90s Indy.

Some nice indie rock, I enjoyed the vibe of this.

It was good but not really my jam

Not the music for me. Indie songs of 1994, trailing a path away from grunge superstardom and indie-rock pop

Liked the instrumental songs

ALBUM RATING: 3.4 ALBUM GRADE: C+ TRACK RATINGS: 1. Silence Kid - 3.5 2. Elevate Me Later - 3.0 3. Stop Breathin - 3.5 4. Cut Your Hair - 3.0 5. Newark Wilder - 3.5 6. Unfair - 3.5 7. Gold Soundz - 3.0 8. 5 - 4 = Unity - 3.5 9. Range Life - 3.5 10. Heaven Is a Truck - 3.5 11. Hit the Plane Down - 4.0 12. Fillmore Jive - 3.0

Reminds me of early Weezer with untuned guitars and Peavey practice amps for the guitar distortion. Loose, jammy tunes with wandering tempi making for a very live performance recorded in the studio sound. With no click track feel. I will check out more of this band in the future. They have an interesting sound that I am not familiar with, reminds of early Indie Rock.

A bit dramatic for me. Solid album, but not THAT good.

not bad

Was good respect the effort but not anything special tbh

Too long, couldn't last

Surprising, Silence kid started out really not to my taste. but quickly pivoted to a song I could listen to, as were most of the ones in this album.

Fun album all around

Wel grappig

Ihan hauskaa indierokkailua, sanotaan 3.5/5

Compared to the first album that I reviewed for Pavement, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain is a slight improvement into the "okay". I like a lot of indie rock, and music that is Pavement-adjacent, but this album still only feels "okay" at best.

-"Silence Kid" is a cool enough song -"5-4=Unity" stood out as the most musically interesting song, probably because it is instrumental so the instruments actually had to do something. -Most o9f the instrumental parts seemed like dead basic to me, and the singing was fine I guess. just not a particularly inspiring album.

early 90's rock, alternative - would be heard in a 90's teen movie - 3 stars

I’m not sure what makes this special. It’s cool, and they definitely have a different sound than most 90s bands while not straying too far from the formula. It’s a little like Third Eye Blind but sloppy and more punk I guess. It’s fine.

Never got into their albums. Good singles band

3, makes me want to lie on a couch

Not a bad rock album, but it just doesn’t provide anything exceptional.

Just your average, run of the mill alternative rock album without any lows or highs

Okay. Nothing really jumped out at me as being super memorable

yeah this is basically what i expected from a pavement record. it’s fine, not super memorable

Weak enough grunge rock. would have loved it when i was younger though

did not like

Rock indie

As a longtime indie/alternative fan it really was about time I finally listened to a full Pavement album. I'd say I was whelmed by it... It's likeable, but I didn't find myself wondering where this band had been all my life, or noticing a seismic influence on today's musical landscape. Got my foot in the door (/on the Pavement, amirite?) now though, so who knows, maybe I'll grow to love 'em.

I still feel like I missed the boat with Pavement, Cut Your Hair is pretty eponymous and a few more listens could probably bump this to a 4 but for now it's a 3.

After a couple of listens I don't know whether this is average, or fantastic. I'll go inbetween because at least half of Crooked Rain are great 90s songs, but you get drab like 5+4=Unity too. Favourite song was Cut Your Hair, though we'll see how long that lasts with the Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Oooooh hook stuck in my brain.

I've been aware of this band for ages but never heard a lick. This wasn't bad but I was a bit underwhelmed. I may revisit though

Very funky I liked it

Pavement: Could this sound anymore 90's indie? Melancholic but not depressing. Not city or rural. Just suburban with a skateboard that doesn't do any big tricks. Not punk or private school. Just the kid in the middle of it all, trying to figure out themselves as a sophomore in college.

I mean...it was okay. I don't dislike it but also can't say I'm a huge fan either. Best tracks for me were Silence Kid and Range Life. But even so, I can't exactly say that any of these melodies were particularly memorable for me. This album is aggressively 90s in a good way, though, so it has that going for it. Rating this 3 stars but would give 3.5 if I could.

Hér eru tvö mjög góð og sæmilega þekkt lög, sem mér finnast afar skemmtileg. Svo er 5-4 = Unity líka mjög fínt. Hitt er mið-tíunda filler í mínum eyrum.

Listened to this a few times while working but nothing really stood out to me too much though I wasn't really paying attention closely. Pavement is one of those bands that I probably should like given my preference for 90's alt rock but I've never really clicked with them. To me, they sound sort of the vanguard for 00-era "indie rock" which swings away from punk rock noise and more into kind of outsider pop that sounds "pretty" instead of "ugly" for lack of better words. Probably I should given this a few more listens but right now it's just a 3 for me.

Solid. Deserves more listens. Definitely more of a 3.5

Less incisive than the debut, but knocked me off balance late and enough.

I like Pavement for short bursts, I can't listen to Stephen Malkmus for sustained periods of time. I like the punk rockiness of the we're dissonant and don't care what you think, but it's also just the thing that gets on my nerves. Certainly appreciate that this has influences many bands that I like more than them.

Indeed, with this album, Pavement have interpreted the anxieties/problems/issues of their time at their best. (6/10) FT: Unfair, Range Life

Great 90s indie

Chanson préférée: Cut Your Hair

Wow, kudos to this for being perhaps the most early to mid 90's sounding rock album I've ever heard. I didn't think I had ever heard of this band before, but Silence Kid sounds pretty familiar. 3 stars for being pleasant enough but otherwise unremarkable.

I didn't get anything special from this record. It's cool, but nothing special at all.

Good indie rock. Loud and upbeat but still some-what melancholic, I don't know what causes me to hear it this way but it is common for me among bands of this style(Sonic Youth, Karate).

Great record

Pretty standard 90s alt-rock.

12th January 2022 Listened in the early afternoon while showering and getting ready. Saw Barnett in the evening and we chatted crypto and went to see spiderman far from home. Really liked parts of this, the singer reminded me of lou Reed singing with the velvet underground.

It's a good sign that the music is genuine when the singer can't sing very well. But the content comes with a wry smile and subtlely smooth studio engineering. I'm not sure if I heard these guys before, but it seemed familiar. I had fun and I'll probably circle back again.

Nice energy and vibes throughout. I enjoyed it more than i expected; i dont listen to lo-fi indie rock very much. I liked Gold Soundz.

Solid '90s alt rock.

Had a real Weezer vibe...or maybe the other way around? Either way I liked it

Pretty good

Hugely influential (and I do like Malkmus) but I could never see the justification for them being anything other than middle-of-the-road indie

An enjoyable time, good album

I never really got Pavement. I appreciate their influence on other bands that I enjoy more than the band itself. This album is fine. Maybe some day it will really click. Not today.

First time I have heard this, lighter than Lo-Fi and reminiscent to me of Babyshambles which of course came later. I liked this but not overawed. "Elevate Me Later" "Cut Your Hair" stand out tracks here for me.

Heavy Wilco vibes. Ok, I guess. A little repetitive and Gen-X whiney for my taste.

Cut Your Hair and Unfair are very catchy. 5-4 Unity was a cool change. Hit the Plane Down has some definite Ween vibes which is always a great thing. The rest was pretty uninteresting.

Have never heard of this band before. It was ok.

At first, I filed this album away under all of the other mid-90s/early-00s indie music I've ever heard but it really grew on me after the first couple of songs. I got tired of the breathy vocals on some of the tracks but I really liked the production throughout the record. Fav songs: stop breathing, unfair

Well, hair cut is iconic and the influence is clear but I wouldn’t say it totally floated my boat

Enjoyable listen. Some turds in the mix.

Started off as generic indie rock and descended into ugly noise. The last track, Fillmore Jive, surprised by being quite beautiful. Not sure I genuinely liked it or if it was relief the album was ending. Song saved: Fillmore Jive

Good Album. Good listen for a Friday

distinctive sound of the era. reminds me of dinosaur jr or the eels. I kinda like his bad voice. Lyrics name-checking/slagging loads of bands they toured with is a bit pretentious. Songs kinda blur into one another. Still, I like it, but probably not enough to listen to again.

Indie animadillo.

To be honest, i know indie music very bad, but as i can feel the album sounds very very pure. Their music was outstripping, as i listened to the new album by the strookes. It sounds very relaxing. Some tracks i am even ready to listen to several times. Their sound makes me feel nostalgic about 90s. Great times . They impact me the most.  But i give 3 to this album because it's a little bit different from what i can completely enjoy

Good indie style

Influential early wave alternative, but not really my preference.

Had a jazzy-grunge feel. Interesting for a listen but I doubt I will wake up saying let me jam to Crooked Rain

Is this album Pavement’s Pinkerton? Do they have a Pinkerton? I’ve always felt like I was right on that edge of liking this band, but could never fully commit. Listening to an entire album of their’s for the first time leaves me feeling like the reason is that I don’t get too bowled over by the jokey-snarky or whatever the hell you want to call them lyrics that Malkmus is delivering. But man, there are moments on here that I really like! Whenever they just lock in the rhythm section and slow things down I’m all ‘bout it. So give me a sad Pavement record! It’ll make me happy.

90s + mild familiarity make me rate kindly, but it's still kinda boring indie.

Cool album. Very 90s in a lot of ways but some differences in some songs. Enjoyed the slightly "out of tune " parts which worked. A lot of the songs are pretty unremarkable but nothing too bad. 3.5

Sve u svemu kvalitetan album, vrijedan slušanja.

If it's possible for 90s alt rock to be bland, this is. I listened to it three times to be sure and it still failed to make an impression on me. Not great, not terrible. Best track: Cut Your Hair

Ongepolijste high school rock.

slow, not quite psychedelic but a bit, chill, stoned mood

Better than I was expecting, heard some of their songs before but never a full album. Reminds me a little of early modest mouse.

Not sure i would listen to this again...but I only listened to it for a few minutes.

I've never heard of this album, or pavement for that matter. I have heard cut your hair in passing for sure. It was familiar enough for me to go "ah yeah I know that one." Generally speaking for me, I don't super enjoy 1990's alt rock. I respect the music, but I tend to dislike Smashing pumpkins, Weezer, Green day, and even Nirvana to a certain degree. So take my review with a grain of salt I guess. Overall, I think It was alright. The vocals at some points I found to be pretty grating. Especially on range life, maybe I don't get it, but it the his vocal ability sounds fairly bad to me. The writing itself seemed pretty solid though, I didn't spend time looking up lyrics or anything. But I think there is some good storytelling involved. Instrumentation and album structure are good especially when you really hear them having fun. 5-4=unity I think is very good for that very reason.

Jeff tweedy sounding voice. Cool sometimes but a little odd

Pavement are a real alt rock band, with their sound not out of place in today's alternative scene. A good album that spoke about the time. A good listen and would add to my streaming library. Best: Cut your hair, Range Life Worst: Filmore Drive

Peak edginess of grunge/alt rock 7/10

I enjoyed the album, though I am not the biggets fan of the singer's voice. I like how each song has a similar feel yet aren't completely identical. The songs did seem to have a bit of a depressed feel to them.

An album is only listened to once or twice before and one that I really enjoyed. I think will get more from this with further listened but I enjoyed it all. Some great songs on here, really interesting sound and didn’t dislike any of it

The good punkrock album includes 45 tracks.

With a proper producer they would've probably made a better Weezer than Weezer.

Hit and miss.

Couldn't get into it at all on first listen. Gave it another go and it seemed alright, but still didn't seem that interesting. I was expecting something a lot edgier from the name/album art so I was kinda dissappointed when it sounded kinda generic.

Influential punk/rock with cool lyrics and attitude, not really for me!

I liked the first couple of songs. Good energy level and indie attitude. The third song - not so much. Cut Your Hair just sounds like someone told them " Hey make a song with a little less of This and a little more of That and you might actually get a hit.  I guess it worked. After a short nap the album recovers with Unfair as the 'tude comes back. Range Life is also good.  My listening experience is sort of like listening to a Wilco album. I probably thought of this analogy since the bands sort of sound alike but that's not my point. The similarity I'm referring to is that some songs are easy to like on the first listen - generally speaking the easy to like ones  are the tunes with some pace.  Others need to be listened to for longer than the 24 hours we are given to rate. With Wilco, I typically end up liking those question mark songs especially on the RFG albums like "being there". The same might have happened with Pavement's question mark songs but who knows.

Heard it, but always worth a listen.

Not too bad

Overall I enjoyed it - some good tunes and I like the looseness of it all. Not bad.

Hmm. It's good indie rock stuff but I don't know if I like it enough to really vibe with it. The singer isn't great but I can easily look past that, and the production is a perfect match for what they're going for I think, but man it just don't click with me. Sorry, only 3.

Fine I suppose

Passed me by a bit until tracks I knew came on

I think I only knew one Pavement track before this. Glad I listened to it, some nice sounds in there that reminded me of quite a few other bands that I like. Wouldn’t rush to listen to it again, but at least I now know what their vibe is.

Nice enough, but not particularly interesting musically. I know this isn't an exercise in technically proficient musicianship but the lead singer can't really sing. 5.5/10

Nothing wrong with this, but nothing to get excited about either.

Heard so much about this band over the years and expected to love it. Very one paced but had enough to make me want to spend a bit more time on it

The lo-fi sound and singer's voice make it pretty easy to dismiss but underneath the song-writing is good and it gets better with repeat listening. Some of the mellower, less played songs have a Lou Reed feel. I could do without the intermittent screaming.

Really nice. Totally had forgotten about this.

My kid brother is huge Pavement fan, but I could never catch the contagion like him. Pavement's jangly guitar and jerky vocals have some charming appeal though. I found 5-4 Unity to be the most interesting song with its Brubeck-esque tempo, Range life, Gold songs and Silence Kid are also good.

Always shows up in lists. Never really checked them out. Standouts: elevate me later, cut your hair (I've heard this for sure). Solid album. I imagine it gets better with repeat listens.

Not the fault of the album, but the 90s just are not my favorite era of music. That being said, there was a lot of great electric guitar playing on this album.

Was okay, wouldnt listen to on my own.

Has very mid 2000's vibes in my opinion. Somewhat nostalgic to BNL and cohort era.

weirdly, the first thing that comes to mind is Izzy Stradlin and the Juju Hounds? I was afraid this would be a post-punk atrocity, but ended up being a solid jam. I can't justify a four because it's not something I'd seek out, but feels like a strong 3.5 because of the general groove.

Quite a record--I enjoy the vibe of Pavement, though I don't understand how they deserve all the obsessive praise.

I haven't listened to this album much, but some of Pavement's later albums are among my faves. The version I have is a 2 disc set, which apparently includes 3 EPs and a bunch of early versions of tracks that appear on Wowee Zowee, so I had to re-listen just to the original album tracks to pick out a qualifying fave - "Fillmore Jive"

A couple way out there songs, but otherwise a strong alternative set. A bit less melodic, but still strongly written and interesting.

I was expecting to hate this, but it was actually pretty good. 3 stars.

Really dope album

Nothing really stood out tho. Vou dar nota 3 mas o anterior do supertramp q dei nota 3 tbm eh mto melhor.

An unknown band for me. I could listen to them, as I kept on thinking I would be surprised having read WIKI on them. But I don't think they will get a revisit from me. It is not my type of music. As the English language is not my first language, music first speaks to me followed by the lyrics. But I could appreciate different styles of songs going from rock to melodious.

It was okay. Typical 90’s type rock

KOREA! KOREA! KOREA! KOREA!

No bad, need a few more listens to get into it

An ok early 90's rock album.

Realy liked Gold Soundz.

Good alternative album, I liked it a lot. I don't really know why it's on the top 1001 list though. Favorite song: Filmore Jive, least favorite: Hit the plane down. Sound was pretty generic and predictable but the project was still enjoyable, 6/8.

It's okay, nice sound but too long of an album

Kind of overrated but not bad

It was fine. Just an average alternative rock album with some touch of indie rock.

The vocalist sits somewhere between Kurt Cobain and Isaac Brook of Modest Mouse. Speaking of Washington musicians, I know these guys are from California, but this album probably did numbers in the PNW. It's got a sound that is still referenced to this day with its blunt lyricism and wandering, hazy guitars, I have to respect this thing on a fundamental album. But I don't think I've got much more than a tacit respect for it. My personal preferences had me feeling like this was a slog until the guitar solo on "Cut Your Hair". The songs were sitting in that uncomfortable middle ground between intentionally experimental and pop-leaning. The musicianship is there, but it's not my idea of a captivating listen. What's more, this feels like the umpteenth guitar-based album on this list. "Gold Soundz" had a nice composition, it was wistful and innocent. But by "Range Life" I was good and done, wholly uninterested. Strong 2/5

Wouldn’t listen to any of these if given a choice. Sounds like they don’t even care.

Even the name of the band hints at the shoegaze-y downbeat drab indie that it ultimately proved to be. It started more promisingly than I was expecting with a sludgy heaviness but overall it's mostly semi-tuneless guitar-led indie with flat vocals. Very similar to most of the rest of the genre

I listened to this album yesterday, and I have already forgotten it. I can't remember a single track and I can barely even remember what it sounded like. What I do remember is that the vocals were shite, and it was mostly just generic indie with some slightly fuzzy guitars. Definitely didn't need to listen to this one and won't be seeking out any more of their music.

I wanted to like this a lot. I like some Pavement songs. I like people that are clearly influenced by Pavement. I was introduced to Pavement by other bands I like in this warbly sad boy indie vein. Oh and from the spoiler I've seen, my next album is by Irish dorks, U2, who I would love to "introduce to pavement," if you catch my drift. Somehow too 90's, somehow too quirky, and just not what I wanted from this experience. A sad end to another dismal week. Rarely am I let down, but I can count this as one of those times. With that said, I'm sure this record will grow on me. Or maybe it won't. Who cares? 2 GENRE: Even Blinder Melon

Alice in Chains but the singer is sleepy

I like the music on every single song, but the vocals mess it up for me. And I really can't see what qualifies them to have two albums on this list. 2,5

when i started this list nobody told me that it would be 70% okay-ish rock albums that i wouldn't gag at if it shoved itself down my throat. guess that's my fault fave track: fillmore jive ^ and it's not even close

An okay album, no stand out songs.

# Album Name: Crooked Rain Crooked Rain # Artist: Pavement # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: My gawd. This was that crappy americana style indie music. One good song in cut your hair. The rest is cringe. # Top Tunes: Cut your hair # Would I listen to it again? No

Just not a huge punk fan honestly, it was fine, just not my thing

Not a very good album. Did not mesh well at all. This was more of a jam band album than anything else.

typical american 90s band same old shite!

This album left zero impact on my life.

Highlights: Non-Alignment Pact 2.0

Vocals are just terrible. +1 star for the instrumental song "5-4=Unity".

I already knew and disliked pavement going into this album. The music and rhythms feel sloppy and unfinished, the general genre is unimpressive as it feels later artists did this better, and the singers singing felt out of tune and lazy. I get this was a big album for the development of indie alt rock, but it just didn't age well and has been far surpassed.

Nauseatingly mediocre indie rock.

I had to stop listening. I really want to like it, and can see why it would have been great at the time. But not for me.

There is so much 90s alternative on this list. I feel like I listened to plenty of alt/indie/lo-fi/etc in the 90s, like everyone else. But there are so many alt rock bands on this list that, as best I can tell, I've never heard. Like this band. Does that mean it's not memorable? Unfair has moments that remind me of Heroin by Velvet Underground. The spacey garage version of Take Five was a strange detour inserted into the middle of the rest of this.

Really underwhelming slacker rock. Nothing is memorable or stand out.

Pavement have been a band which I always meant to research but never have. This was as a result of catching them live on a Glastonbury TV transmission and was quite impressed. On today’s listen there was nothing to make me think I’ve missed anything and question why such a run of the mill album actually made the list. Inoffensive and OK to have in the background but nothing more. 2/5 15/4/26

This *yawns* is extremely *yawns* Zzzzzzzzzzzz……

gefiel mir gar nicht

The early/mid 1990’s was a time when great rock music was still being made. Even the radio stations were playing it and dozens of artists had some success. Pavement never achieved the upper echelons of music then. Their songs, at least the ones on this album, simply didn’t compete with the other music of the day. It’s all just okay music, not inspiring or- let’s be honest- not that good. Listenable, but not for more than one time. 2 stars

Generic 90s alternative. Bleh

Mítica cut your hair

Not great. Not the worst thing I've ever heard. Cut Your Hair was kinda fun.

This is the second album released by the California indie/rock band. There are two or three decent tracks here, and the rest are totally forgettable. Sounds like a garage band for the most part. A couple songs remind me of Nirvana, which is a negative.

You know what, maybe Pavement is the hipster darling I was thinking of, and not Parliament. That would make a lot more sense. Anyway, a lot of internet people are into Pavement. I never listened to them. I think I was expecting something a little more low-energy (shoegazey?), so this was marginally better than I expected. The vocals aren't exactly captivating though. They sound like a lo-fi Weezer. Happy to learn that Stephen Malkmus hates the Eagles, just like me. But at least the Eagles have a little something called "hooks". 'Silence Kid' has a very familiar melody, but other than that, I'm dyin' out here.

It's fine.

It has everything I like in terms of sound, but still tastes like unfulfilled potential throughout. Like watered-down coffee. What a shame. 2.5/5

Seemingly influential, but I couldn’t connect with it

Indie music that I don't really care for right now

Sounds similar to things I like yet I don’t like this.

I completely lost interest in this.

Never been crazy about these guys. Cut Your Hair sounds like it would play at Chipotle and the rest of the songs are pretty boring.

This is a tough one for me. There were parts of it I thought were really great and other parts I didn’t like. I’m torn between a two and a three.

Really didn’t like it. Not sure why but it wasn’t a pleasant listening experience.

90s indie grunge... cool. haven't heard of pavement. they rock but tv music didn’t speak deeply to me to tickle my fancy

These guys are talented at their respective instruments, and there are one or two decent songs and guitar hooks. However, they are also good at making their music complex enough so that the listener can’t actually tell whether what the band has actually played is right and/or is in time (it definitely is, but that’s not the point). They can’t actually write a decent tune, and are trying too hard to show off how much music theory they know - look at me, I know a time signature other than 4/4. Plus the lead singer can’t really sing… No wonder I haven’t heard of them. Rant over. 3/10

I mean there were glimpses of something enjoyable, but a lot of it felt a bit too noisy and angsty for me.

Ok 2/5

22/01/2026 I didn't enjoy this and I don't know why, I found it quite boring. Spotify listeners: 2.2 million

I would listen to this when I'm in a very particular mooood 4/12
