Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Was all right. You can hear how it paved the way for the psychedelic movements in the 70s, but even though there were a few good listens here it still failed to capture my full attention.
it was fine. good solo in pre-road downs.
Not into folk music, but it is pretty good for what it is
Good album, not enough to listen to it again all the way through
Beautiful harmonies but 'to show their [musicianship] is their whole endeavour' Best song: Wooden Ships
Quite rare to hear male vocal harmonies like this. This could start a deep dive into C, S & N.
liked it more than deja vu. Its a very nice album for on the background. fav. song: marrikash express
Decent but not a regular rotation album
A solid 3. I wouldn´t say that it´s something extraordinary, but there are some great parts, such as at the beginning and the middle of the album. Quite a good production as well, but still it did not hit me on an emotional level.
Alternates between some beautiful moments and musical wallpaper. Reminds me of fleet foxes a little
Nice enough
Pleasant enough
It was ok, but I prefer Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Listened a lot to this album. Maybe better than Déjà Vu. Especially Guinnevere jumps out!
Lovely
A Lib Dem of an album
Kinda alright, I get that it was early mor countrified rock etc but not much sticks and it gets a bit meh.
Not as good as deja vu
Hmm 3.4 maybe had to have experienced it at the time
CSN. yep
Agradable durante un rato, luego se vuelve monotono
6.5
There's an admirable straightforwardness about this album. It's called Crosby, Stills & Nash, by Crosby, Stills & Nash and the cover features an image of Crosby, Stills & Nash. The last of whom looks a little bit like my mate Dave might if his razor was removed for two years or so. This is no doubt a great record. With some wonderful songs and an undeniable craftsmanship about the whole endeavour. But at the same time, it's also the kind of album that I can only admire from a distance. Dipping my toe in, rather than dive-bombing right in. Try as I might, I just couldn't get too deeply involved and gripped by it. It was more background listening that something that submerged the soul. Glad I listened to it though, and I particularly liked the track Guinnevere.
Listened only the first 8 (out of 16). Fairly good. Nice atmosphere but not really my thing
4 Good album, but Crosby is still a little bitch
Meh. I like Marakesh Express the most of these songs, but it does feel like a Simon & Garfunkel song.
quite enjoyable. good album
Extremely talented guys. Some great harmonies on here, but this isn't my favorite CSN/CSNY album, a bit too mellow. 3.5 stars, rounding to 3.
I thought it was nice, very earnest, so much so that at times I wanted to throw up in my mouth. The highlight for me was "Everybody's Talkin" and the lowlight was "Song with No Words."
Good album. Nothing really stands out to me, in terms of the songs but what truly makes this shine is the harmonies. When singing together the sound is amazing("Judy blue eyes" and "helplessly hoping" in particular)
Top tracks: .Wooden Ships .Helplessly Hoping .Long Time Gone
I'm a big fan of Graham Nash, especially his first two solo albums. But this album sounds more like a Stephen Stills album, who is my least favorite of the three. Prefer CSNY to CSN.
Chill, although some of it is a bit too clean/pure for my tastes. Guitar in tracks like Wooden Ships is more interesting to me, in some ways this sounds like Simon & Garfunkel, similar folks-y vocals. Very 70s. Long Time Gone is better sounding to my ears with the solo vocal parts. Song with No Words is actually pretty annoying to me.
Nice harmonies but pretty insipid overall - A Song With No Words is a primo example. Too perfect, not very interesting. I liked Marrakesh Express and Pre-Road Downs though. Guinevere is pretty spooky too
Love half of it. Hate half of it.
Cool harmony and decent guitar. Shrill at times
Enough already
2 good songs in album, already had hopelessly hoping one. Not bad
Easy listening, too twang
Slow. Good for just relaxing
You know, it's not bad. Good songwriting, great harmonies... It's definitely its own vibe and if you're feeling it, it's good stuff.
Hieno, aurinkoinen albumi ja etenkin bassot toimi
Pleasant to the ears, sometimes repetitive.
Favorites include "Helplessly Hoping", "Everybody's Talkin'", and "Teach Your Children". An interesting coincidence is that I watched the episode of The Office where Michael sings "Teach Your Children" to everyone's kids for "Take Your Daughter to Work Day" (S2, E18) today before I learned it was on the recommended album for today.
The production is gorgeous, the vocals a little less than, the arrangements classic or interesting at turns. I'm back and forth on how much of a wow factor it has. That's lost a bit in the gloss, while the less-well-aged bits stick out. Still, it's something that bears going back to: There are rough edges, but no splinters I can find.
Blues guitar. Key songs: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Marrakesh Express
More folksy classic rock. not bad, but not amazing
I'm really sick of folk rock from Laurel Canyon, WAY too much of that on this list. This sounds like all the rest and must of the songs sound pretty much the same. Pleasant enough, but boring and generic. No, thanks.
This is the first time I have ever listened to CSN, and it was about what I expected - folksy stuff that is pretty much indistinguishable from all the other folksy stuff from the time.
Found this pretty boring with no standout track. 5/10
The vocal harmonies are nice but they do it way too much. There are songs that are entirely sung in three part harmony. I find it distracting and hard to connect with what is being sung. Overall, middle of the road, kinda samey, background music. Pleasant enough to get a 2 from me.
idk bro
Lo prejuzgué creyendo que sería medio country o Creedence, y no. Igualmente no es tan mi estilo, pero debería darle una chance con más atención en la escucha, justo estaba haciendo cosas.
Boring
CSN without the Y. To be honest, I hardly noticed that absence, but I can hardly notice anything that happens in this style of music anyway. Not terrible, but mostly in one ear and out the other. Key tracks: Carried Away
I'm generally a big fan of all sorts of American country folk, but I just didn't get this album. It probably worked well given the context of the time — three vocalists from three big 60s bands teaming up to form a new band? Well, I'd give it a shot! However, the album ultimately felt very boring. That said, it's not bad, with pleasant acoustic strumming, an almost Beatlesque three-part harmonica. It's a normal, laid-back acoustic folk album from the hippie era. Alright, but boring. For me, David Crosby's solo album was much more interesting. Although, those who miss Woodstock 69 vibes should enjoy this album; however, such people have probably known it by heart for decades.
Thought the album started off very boring and repetitive. Picked up slightly at the end but still.. I didn’t think it was great
Ganz wenig davon finde ich wirklich gut
this mostly does not work for me. it has the foundations of a thing I like but not the other necessary elements. I am probably rounding up to a three because there are some nice moments and a couple pretty songs on here but it’s a low three if I do.
2* of its time
Didn't enjoy this particularly, feels quite juvenile and something you'd put on for kids to listen to
Sleepy sound and all songs sound the same
Other than the opening track, I believe this album by this supergroup is a product of the 1960s. I don't think it holds up to the test of time.
Just ok. Might like deja vu better??? Wanted to like this one better. Maybe I just listened to it on the wrong day?
Folk is not really something I listen to but I enjoyed this one! It certainly has 60s vibe and it reminds of something that would be background music in old movies. I used to listen to KISS quite a lot when I was younger and actually songs like Pre-Road Downs could easily be a KISS song if it would be produced differently! This is the second album I am rating so my rating is not developed yet but the only reason I am giving only 2 stars is that (5=Album I would want to buy as a Vinyl and I would regularly listen to, 4=I would not necessarily want to buy but has mostly great songs, 3=Has some great songs I would (be happy to) add to my playlists, 2= I enjoyed but did not meet the criteria of the higher ratings, 1= I did not enjoy.)
Not what I’m looking for for some reason. Impressive acapella but like the kind you hear mid high school performance that you don’t really go back to. Music forgettable too. Akin to a night out on the town where you feel like it’s an absolute rager and then you look back in confusion. Drink: a Heineken. Watery, makes you tipsy, and rarely the one for the job. Rating: 4.37/10
no me mata, me aburrio un poco. no me gusta como esta grabado del todo. osea me confunde nose que cosas son buscadas y que no. osea se banca pero no me genero mucho. es un 2.5 (una paja no poder media estrella)
I don’t know what it was but this didn’t really resonate with me all that much, I like bands who can create great harmonies (Beatles and queen) but this didn’t scratch that same itch those others did. I think it’s important but I won’t be coming back anytime soon.
I've heard of them, but didn't recognize any of these songs. Very much not my thing though.
This is fine.
you can hear the beginnings of a group that would eventually produce some classic music but this album is not great. I can't score them higher because I know what was to come in the future. So many better C,S & N and once they added Y even better.
mej
It was okay
Helplessly hoping made me cry. Overall I probably won't listen to it again, but I enjoyed it. 3 stars.
Kannte die vor allem als Produzenten. Recht lahm.
Not for me
Meh
The vocals are the whole point here — three voices stacking into harmonies that are, genuinely, impressive. For a song or two it works. For a whole album it becomes a lot. There's not much contrast, not much relief from the format. By the end it all blurs together into one long, pleasant, beige wall of California folk-rock. 2/5 — technically accomplished, occasionally lovely, and about 35 minutes too long as a full listen.
Poor man's SImon and Garfunkel
I was so ready for this to be another Surrealistic Pillow where I unexpectedly fell in love with some 60s blues psych folk rock. Unfortunately past me didn't know how disappointed they were going to be. Maybe if I hadn't hyped myself up so much this would have been a 3. But my day has been ruined. High 2
Muy sonido de los Beatles. No me gustó mucho, me pareció bastante aburrido y que sonaba siempre igual, no sabia cuando terminaba una cancion y arrancaba otra.
Despite its historic reputation, the debut feels emotionally distant. The harmonies are technically flawless, but they don’t convey any real depth or passion to me. It’s polished, yes, but ultimately leaves me cold
nice vibes, and nice lush harms. i like guinnevere quite a bit and pre-road downs too. but nothing too stand-out to me about this album overall.
Kinda boring. Don't love the sound of the vocals
A little disappointing ... the vocal harmonies are really nice, but the songs fall a bit flat. You can really feel the potential, but at least on this album, it's not there yet.
Song with No Words lever op til titlen
God I find that hippy mystical thing grating and this has it in bucketloads. The sound and music is far more interesting, even if a tiny bit overblown at times. But I really don't want to hear about ladies wandering in the misty morning in that way thank you very much.
Wasn't for me. It was fine, some of the more blues inspired parts were great. The harmaization was impressive. But overall I wouldn't revisit this album.
Americana doesn't sit well with me. Overall, a good album but not for me.
Just a nothing burger of an album.
Ok, but nowhere near Simon and Garfunkel!
No me atrapo
Tough listen after the first song, tbh. Meh.
This was a slog for me, especially the back half. 2.5
Sounds like Simon & Garfunkel without that duo's ear for a melody, or knack of engaging lyrics, or Art Garfunkel's vocal artistry. Tedious, vapid balladry that mostly sounds the same. Angry, because I was really excited for this and it's actually pretty terrible.
A few standout tracks but certainly nothing I haven't heard before and the fact that ends so abruptly and lukewarm certainly did not help. Favorite Song: Lady of the Island
Cool guitar parts Clean harmonies They seem to improvise lal lyrics and melodies on the spot, which is a bad thing, cant remember a single verse
Me aburrió muy vieja escuela para mi gusto
Not bad*, but ultimately this is just another boomer folk rock album. Kinda funny that the generation which berates everyone else for wanting "safe spaces" absolutely love this kinda bland, inoffensive shite. (No, going on about how much you like smoking hash does NOT give you edge). *Except the first guitar solo in Wooden Ships which has a couple of super eggy notes in it
Really don't like them. Boring as hell.
Let’s do this internet style: 1. Suite Judy Blue Eyes 9/10 2. Huh- I nodded off- BORING 5/10 3. Guinevere… 6.5/10 4. Nodded off again… 4.5/10 5. Pre Road Downs 7/10 6. Wooden Ships 6/10 7. lady of the island 2/10 8. Helplessly Hoping 7/10 9. long Time Gone 7.510 10. 49 Bye Byes 7.5/10 Geez- this is an album that is lesser than the sum of its parts. 3 part harmonies- A Guitar work - B+ Best songs - A- Worst Songs -C- Would I turn it off- No Would I ever put it on- Nope Whole album Average: 6.1 I guess that’s about right, barely passable. One of the most overrated bands/collaborations of all time and a great example of an act that was considered so highly influential long after the fact when they were never as influential musically as the were socially. They were much more important act once Young joined. 2.5/5 stars, I’m rounding down
I’ve listened to this before and (as in this relisten…) it doesn’t do much for me. The folk/country/west coast rock combo doesn’t speak to me, and although the musicianship and vocal harmonisation is good, it doesn’t excite me. The lyrics - when they’re not referencing damsels and ‘milady’ etc - are quite interesting as they’re straightforwardly personal and often vulnerable.
A little disappointing since I know these guys are capable of much more.
A couple of amazing songs, great singing throughout, wonderful harmonies. However, some awful drippy and half formed filler in places.
Kinda a nothing burger. Some good tracks but replacement level with other contemporary artists of this time
Adorei, tirando as duas primeiras! Prováveis favoritas: Wooden Ships Lady of the Island Do for Others
I like these guys better with the Y.
Another quite boring one.
Great opening and closing tracks! Everything else was pretty blah.
Like the follow-up with Neil Young, CSN's debut undoubtedly captures the sounds of its era while at the same time failing to do anything exciting with them. The opening track hints at a desire to write adventurous songs, but it ends up covering very little ground despite its length. The weakest songs are the straightforward folk songs; "Guinnevere" and "Lady of the Island" aim for a peaceful hippie haze but just sound sleepy. The vocal harmonies are nice, but they're subtle and often feel like they're used in place of real hooks. Where the album does shine is its rock tracks. "Wooden Ships" has a trippy guitar and does go places, and the closer is the most immediately interesting song. If there was more of that this album might be pretty good, but instead it feels like just another hippie album 50 years later.
Pretty insipid stuff
Really not my thing at all, but the bass playing pleased me
Creo que el Folk no es mi género. Tiene algunas buenas canciones, pero como álbum no lo disfrute del todo. 2.7
Here is an album that I never heard but have only heard the first song and remember it from the doots at the end. It’s memorable. CSN are known to have created to have established the califoysou d and I watched a documentary about Laurel Canyon where many of these songs were written I guess. Now they can all sing beautifully and play amazing music. The songs were just kind of okay. I was not blown away by any of it. I’m sure it was good when it came out. I guess the subject matter wasn’t for me.
It’s like sitting down to eat a whole plain cheese pizza. At first it is like magic how the three elements come together. Cheese, sauce, dough. Amazing. But after a while it gets cold and the cheese gets rubbery. Ya need some toppings on there. I guess Neil Young is pepperoni? I don’t know. The metaphor is wearing thin (like the novelty of these dudes harmonizing!)
2.5
not my style (again)
Didn't hate. More tolerable than S&G
I played this but I didn't really hear it.
Nothing I've heard of Crosby, Stills & Nash over the years has done much for me, and precedent holds with this, their landmark debut. I can appreciate that they're great at what they do—and the three of them are icons—it just isn't my thing.
GOING IN: Quite hopeful LISTENED WHILE: walking the dog, then again with a cuppa FAMILIARITY: Know a few songs SKIP RATE: Skipped the odd one REPLAY VALUE: Might come back to it DISCOVERY CURVE: Needed another go ALBUM ARC: Pretty even, consistent VERDICT: Bit disappointing BODY'S VERDICT: Statue mode FAVOURITE TRACK: My Rating: 2 Enough with the harmonies. I know everyone says that's the best thing, but it's constant. Harmony overload.
Nope. Too jammy.
Feels like a cross of Beatles with Simon & Garfunkel. Not familiar with this super group. Not bad, but not my thing.
Don’t think I’m much of a folk rock fan, a lot of the songs blend together and other than Suite Judy Blue Eyes none of them are very memorable or do anything too special. Nothing super ear grating but can’t see myself listening to that one again
after judy blue eyes i thought this might be a half-decent listen and then lady of the island happened it really sucks because some of these songs are tight with great harmonies and hooks but there is a lot of nothing burgers im just not a fan of acoustic and folk so those songs are really boring to me but the more upbeat ones are fine
not my favorite album of theirs. still good. prefer the deluxe version.
Inoffensive. Bit dull
An ok folk rock album. While not bad in itself it mostly makes me want to listen to Simon and Garfunkel and when an album makes you think about listening to another artist they may have done something right but at the same time not enough.
Chill americana folk album. Not much more to say than that. I'm sure there's significance, but it's really just a pretty standard post-summer of love California folk album. None of it was offensive and the lyrics are above average. 5/10
Weirdly enough the only song that stood out to me enough to check was Pre-Road Downs. Idk what it was, maybe a change in the sound from the previous tracks. All-in-all, I still really like classic rock stuff like this, but boy is it hard for it to stand out to me.
trochę country mi się kojarzy, chyba nie najlepiej, słucham dalej. Pierwsza piosenka jest po prostu okej, ma jakąś melodię, nie przeszkadza w siedzeniu i pracy. Kompletnie mnie nie bierze, ale mi nie przeszkadza, that's the best i can do
Ok
There are moments that are enjoyable but I’ll be damned if I just can’t get into them.
Love the harmonies but this incarnation of the band is only about 3/4 as good as it could be (adding the Y helps). Loved “suite: Judy blue eyes” and “Marrakech express” but it falls in gf quite a bit from there and feels somewhat samey same.
Awwwwful lot of the same sounds here.
I've never listened to this album (73). Boring folk music, good for falling asleep I guess?
63/1001 First listen. I struggle to get into this old stuff I haven’t heard before. Mostly due to its inclusions in soundtracks of media depicting the era from which the music was released. This sounds well done though, I just don’t want to hear it. Maybe with this project I’ll become more receptive to these old timey albums. 4/10
Sounds like beatles, but nothing really catchy or hooky. Sounded like one big ongoing song, boring. Even their most popular song didn't really spark.
No offense to some greats, but this is so damn boring Best Song: Hopelessly Hoping Rating: 4.5/10 Stars: 2
Listened to a couple of songs then gave up and found something more to my liking.
Too jangly
Meh
This style doesn’t usually hit my ear very well. The beach boy-esque harmonies, southern grassy field type shit. This definitely took me on a journey, and not in a good or bad way. I can definitely appreciate the musicianship and clear talent in the band, and absolutely some beautiful guitar riffs like the intro to Guinnevere. I could see why someone who was into this type of music would be influenced by this album. Me? It’s a little too Simon & Garfunkel.
Folk aint My jam
Præcis hvad jeg forventede ud fra coveret.
Virkelig kedeligt
Some of the songs are ok, but I think it's a bit too twee for me
Great harmonies, but so boring. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Judy Blue Eyes, Marrakesh Express ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it.
Es passiert echt wenig und plätschert nur vor sich hin.
So this is the first and only Crosby Stills & Nash album. Was expecting to like this a bit more. Marrakech Express was the only song I was already familiar with, but honestly found this a bit boring. Surprising given I normally like these guys in other enterprises, but here the vocals really seemed to grate on me. Might take another listen or two but I probably wouldn't go again. It would get better when Neil Young arrives. Best bit: Lady of the Island is a sweet song Worst bit: Nothing stands out as inherently bad, all just a bit dreary
Sometimes there's no getting around the initial reaction you have when an album pops up, and for this one it was "oh God, no". It's not that these albums are inherently bad, but that for me they are fairly boring affairs, and lean towards technical excellence rather than feeling and excitement. The harmonising tends towards the stale and bleaching of sentiment. Only on a couple of songs do things elevate at all with the help of a electric guitar and band like Long Time Gone, but even here the energy is sapped by the harmonies in the chorus. I find myself longing for a voice to break out (as on Long Time verses) and seperate from the ooze. It doesn't help that this came after a Byrds & Buffalo Springfield album, so I was already tired of the style (although the latter was a lot more exciting and varied). Suffice to say I won't be coming back for more with CSN with or without the Y.
I get why people think this is good, but I just don't enjoy this. Its corny, it reminds me why I don't like pot or hanging out with people who like pot too much.
couple of bangers although some are slow, although i be tapping my foot on some of these beats.
Helt okej 60-tals folkrock. Varken mer eller mindre.
Trist stämsång till gitarrplonkande. Inget vidare. Riktigt illa blir det i Guinnevere och i Lady of the Island. Lite bättre blir det i de mer grooviga låtarna som Pre-Road Downs. Avslutande 49 Bye-Byes hade kunnat vara riktigt bra om den bara hade varit instrumental. En mycket svag tvåa.
Dull
2.5
The California Sound - which went from folk/rock representing Cali's beach culture to basically representing the Hippie movement of the 70's. I'm not really a fan of this style of music that focuses on intense vocal harmonies. It's nice to listen to, but for me, it doesn't hold up well over time. I can appreciate the harmony, I just prefer to listen to something like Queen or even Bone Thugs in Harmony, who uses group harmony sporadically and with a bit more comprehensive musical focus. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful and CSN are great musicians; but these tracks feel like the gimmick is the harmonies, which isn't for me. While listen to this record, I really do envision a simple life on the beaches in California, watching the sunset, going for drives with friends and just hanging out. It's perfect music for this kind of mood. I have to say, I absolutely hated Song With No Words. Just freaking write something instead of filling it with "duh"'s. I DID like their cover of Harry Nilsson's Everybody's Talkin'.....although it make me appreciate Harry Nilsson a bit more and I am upset I can't retroactively improve my rating of albums as the music digests over time.
Booooooring Like their solo projects, I can tell these are obviously talented musicians who make music I just do not care to listen to.
I do not care for these guys without Neil Young. Without him, they're like Simon and Garfunkel but without the crisp production, thoughtful lyrics and interesting instrumentation. Dull, dull, dull.
Ik kende geen enkel nummer. Niet slecht maar hoeft niet in een top 1000 wat mij betreft. Zal het niet weer bewust op zetten.
Not for me
feel like between this, paul simon, the kinks, and gene clark all pretty much back to back, i am a bit tired of this genre and couldnt fully appreciate this
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Eh, good singers and I usually like harmonies, but this bored me. Needs some Neil Young.
A very slow album. Actually almost put me to sleep, I had a real struggle keeping my eyes open at work. I was hoping that it would be a little more up tempo but alas, it wasn't to be. Best: 49 Bye-Byes Worst: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes
Relaxing to the point of putting me to sleep if it weren’t so annoying boring too.
Too many bands from the 60's. A lil bit bored. A morning recap always changes the mind slightly. The harmonies are gorgeous with headphones. A wise man once said rock climbing that 7/10 is a cop out rating, I'm lucky I don't need to worry about that for this album.
Not actively bad, just a bit dull throughout.
Meh
Doesn't do much for me. Nothing offensive in there.
Not much of anything - lacking some Young
he said 67
It's ok but too placid for me. Not enough depth or contrasts.
1. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - 4 Cookie cutter song. Nothing overly fantastic about this track will make me play it again a second time. Not a fan of the vocals or their sound except for the part right around three and a half minutes in. The choir-like signing doesn't strike a big cord with me. 2. Marrakesh Express - 5 Lyrically a joy the song is a lot of fun but instrumentally it has not stood the test of time. The sound is defintiely of it's era but for me, not fantastic. 3. Guinnevere - 6 Guitar sounds so lovely on this track. Again I'm not huge on the sound of the vocals, but it's the guitar that I really enjoy on this track and it is fantastic. 4. You Don't Have to Cry - 5 Lyrically very strong. Instrumentally it's somewhere between Judy Blue Eyes and Guinnevere. Not a bad track. 5. Pre-Road Dawns - 4 The main guitar on this track is superb. Intro is absolutely outstanding. Lyrics are very boring and vocally sound very unpleasant. 6. Wooden Ships - 4 Another track with an excellent guitar sound and some amazing solos on it. Bass is also really good as a compliment. Could do without the rest of the stuff on the track however. 7. Lady of the Island - 1 Nothing about this track is appealing. The vocals nor the lyrics. It's a slower, lighter song so there's not much in the way of instrumentals to even critique. 8. Helplessly Hoping - 2 Vocally not great. The guitar sounds lovely but it's the only instrument on the track. 9. Long Time Gone - 5 The verses sound fantastic vocally before the chorus is the opposite end of enjoyment. The tune is a bit catch though and overall it's not a bad track. Pretty middle-of-the-road stuff. 10. 49 Bye-Byes - 2 Not a great track to end the album off with. It's just not got enough in there that I enjoy on any aspect of the composition. Average Rating: 3.80 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 1.90 Rounded Up: 2 Stars
Gentle. Very rambly. Like Simon and Garfunkel without the choruses. Quite liked the last song.
I know its a classic, but its just okay to me.
This was fine.
I mean, it was good. I think it’s just not for me. I do enjoy their album CSN (1977), so I thought I’d like this one but I just got bored. Few good songs on it, but at this time in my life, none I’d replay.
Pretty unremarkable, easy listening.
Kinda boring but a nice morning album
I'm sure it's great but not for me
Abstract. Kinda silly but also trying to be deep. Poetry more than hooks. Not elevator music but not really sing along music as it’s unpredictable. Meh.
Meh.
Hmm, I guess it just missed me.
Not a fan
Pas mauvais mais pas transcendant
Dang I love Stills so much but this isn’t great. It’s good just not as compelling as Stephen.
Não é muito meu estilo de música, prefiro um pouco mais agitada
For me, a 3 star means OK/Good. Not offensive, but as an album to session in one sitting, not quite a 3. Have listened twice now, no need to listen again.
Boring as fuck
Too folksy hippy for me
They never learn.
OK. I made some inroads into understanding why people like Crosby, Stills, Nash (and the other one on the other albums). I guess if you grew up listening to The Hollies, The Byrd's and Buffalo Springfield, this is an interesting mix of those differing styles. However, I'm not in my late seventies.
é um álbum romântico com aql pegada de acústico bem forte junto com a guitarra, as músicas são todas muito parecidas mas apesar disso eu gostei. Achei ele muito parecido com outros álbuns nessa msm pegada
Pretty dull. The type of shit I ate up at 14 but grew to despise by 18. Now at 34 I feel mostly ambivalent about it.
But for the three hits on this song and the one song where the singers just kind of hum or say nonsense as the lyrics , I would be unable to pick any songs that are distinguished from the others. It's not terrible just very much what you'd expect.
These guys are really good, they should recruit a fourth, perhaps Younger, member
I expected to like this but a little too rough on the edges for me
I will say that I didn't hate this anywhere near as much as I expected to. It's an easygoing listen, with a handful of decent offerings and a jubilant cheer pulsing throughout, but on the whole, this one became tiresome quickly for me. I found my attention ebbing and flowing between the busier, more "rock" oriented passages and the relatively non-descript folk ones. After about 5 tracks, I thought I was on for the home stretch, only to realise that there were nine left to go. "49 Bye-Byes" is the final track proper, which is an appropriate note to wrap things up on, but the Spotify version of the album adds four superfluous, dirging acoustic tracks into the mix.
4/10 I don't know how much of my feeling for this album is impacted by the fact that there have been 56 years of rock music that have happened since it was released and I'm unconsciously comparing it to all of that, but it just didn't engage with me. There have been old albums I've been introduced to during this project that have really grabbed me though, so perhaps that's not it. In general, I feel like there's never really a hook that grabs me, or anything particularly interesting for me to engage with, it's just a bit of a wash of inoffensive pleasantry. Not bad, just not that interesting either. It never generates the tempo and drive to really rock, but I also don't feel the nuance to make it a particularly interesting technical listen either. I think the elements of this album that I do like, I can find in better quantities, of higher quality, elsewhere. If I wanted beautiful harmonies, I'd go for the Beach Boys or (closer to this stylistically) The Beatles. If I wanted bluesy rock, I'd be grabbing Led Zeppelin, for more folky edged stuff, Joni Mitchell etc etc. And that's just considering music that is somewhat contemporary to this. All that being said, I can appreciate the musicianship present here. Their harmonies, although not stylistically my favourite, are tight. The guitar playing in particular has some really quality moments and I really like a few of the organ lines scattered through the album. There's enough quality scattered across the album to lift it above a complete 'meh', but I just can't justify giving it a score that puts it above a 2 star. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes - This is quite nice. The harmonies are good, but quite static in a way. They move, but they all move together rather than around each other. The vibe is nice, but it's quite loose in places and feels a little unfocused. Marrakesh Express - A nice, if pretty twee track. There's some subtle instrumentation low in the mix that adds depth too. It's maybe a bit one note, but decent enough. Guinevere - This is pretty, with an edge of melancholy. Makes me think of The Wicker Man, but the music in that is better. It's nice, but just doesn't grab me. You Don't Have to Cry - I'm starting to feel a bit of a theme coming on. It's nice. But it's also not that interesting to me. It's all getting pretty samey at this point. Pre-Road Downs - This seems more promising to begin with. The organ part I really dig and it feels like it's building to a chorus that just never really arrives. It has a decent rock n roll edge, but fails to deliver on its promises. Wooden Ships- Oooh. This starts well. Great groove and vibe to kick things off. The little pulling of focus by the different parts during the instrumental sections are great, as are the fleeting calls and response vocals. The gang harmonies take a more subtle role behind the lead, which works better to my ears. A good track that has a little bit of that something I've been waiting for. Lady of the Island - It's nice enough. It's a bit boring. And don't do a 'do do do' bit in a two and a half minute love song. Although the ending 'do do do' is actually the best bit of the song. Helplessly Hoping - The harmonies are nice here, with a bit more interesting motion to them. I actually quite liked this track, although it didn't offer much in the way of development. Long Time Gone - A slow rock n roll number. It's laid back and has a bit of grit to it with a nice bit of tension built through the verses, but the chorus just doesn't ever really deliver a satisfying release. 49 Bye-Byes - There're some nice moments here. It's got a bit more thrust than the rest of the album, but at moments it just sort of drifts away from the thread and loses itself a bit. Probably one of the better tracks on the album because it seems a bit more consistent.
Nice
The problem with this is that it gets to the point where it’s no fun anymore very quickly. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is the best song on the record by far. Wooden Ships isn’t terrible. The rest of the album is overstuffed filler.
I don’t know if I’ve got it in me to get through this whole record. I don’t understand how a band can showcase so much obvious musical competency and still be so boring. It’s like they’ve made a concerted effort to avoid catchy melodies. They’ve found a way to sing around any actual melody, yet still harmonize with each other really well. But it’s not just vocally; the guitars sound like they’re being operated by talented guitar players whose talent is primarily expressed through one player mindlessly noodling over a go-nowhere chord structure. It’s really impressive except that it’s so hard to listen to. My dad would be so disappointed with my take on Crosby, Stills, and Nash—Cripes, even their band name is painfully tiresome to say—but I’m just so tired of listening to this record, and I don’t think I’m even halfway through at the time of this writing. I’ll try to get through more, but I doubt I’ll finish. Life’s too short to waste a bunch of time on a record that I know won’t connect with me. 2.5—and I’m probably only rating it this highly because the talent behind this album is obvious. I can’t bring myself to round up though.
2.1/i was barely listening to be fair but i'm not impressed
Fav song: Judy Blue Eyes I've never cared much for CSN or CSNY. They were fine. This album is also fine. More from this group plus Neil Young will come down the pike and I will be able to form an actual opinion. This album sounded too samey-samey and it's their vocals which do not differ very much song to song.
Wasn’t a huge fan. felt very samey and while the harmonies were impressive it didn’t do much for me.
*Really like these guys, but missed Young. *Good background music. *Fave track - Guinnevere (track #3) RATING - 6.5/10
Meh
Has a couple of the hits we all know.
Musique de fond chill mais rien de transcendant. Pas vraiment mon genre. Très inégal, certaines chansons cool et d'autres vraiment nazes.
I knew this album to be iconic, so therefore I stayed away. Now that I can sit and listen, there are splendid, almost perfect moments. But if those moments are supposed to carry the rest of the album, they are not strong enough for that. Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is really 7 and a half minutes?! Why? Helplessly hoping has some incredible melodies. This album walked so Fleet Foxes could sprint.
Moments of brilliance, as you would expect. High 2s.
Like kje så godt sånn klimpremusikk
I dont like laurel canyon scene AT ALL. 2.50
Probably controversial, but this album was boring!! Good voices, but not fun to listen to.
I'm sure there's good songcraft here but it stirs nothing in me
partway through listening and this is okkkkk so far but i've had a lot of 60s/early 70s albums this week and im flagging tbh. just really wanting different music that is not this, sorry...
Sounds like Simon and Garfunkel
Jangly crap. "The harmonies are wonderful"; yeah, awesome to hear shitty songs three times over. Useless without Neil, imo.
just okay i would say, nothing special
I didn't really have an opinion on Crosby, Stills & Nash prior to this project. I do now: I don't like it. Hippie dippie acid rock/folk. No, thank you.
Had its moments (predawn downs and long time gone) bit overall I found it kinda boring.
Litt ensformig
langweilig kein fav hab gefühlt alle schon wieder vergessen
Bisschen zu chillig
Some nice vocal harmonies and sparse guitar parts. I like the vibes but if I'm being honest I got super bored listening to this.
Lovely, i suppose. It didn't move me really
'California' Sound -esk. Sounds like a combination of folk and rock. No song really stood out as a personal favorite.
No Young, no edge to CSN. This is the music I think of when I think of 60s music that I’d rather not have to think of again.
Not quite for me. I understand the vibe but not a genre I’m eager to listen to
A couple high points, but overall not enough songs on the album to keep my interest. They're at their best when they're harmonizing with an acoustic guitar. You can hear the influence on later bands (Fleet Foxes immediately comes to mind)
Too twee for me.
I like rock music from this era, but had never listened to a full album from this band. While I can appreciate what they did here, it didn’t really hold my attention for an entire album. By the end it was just an endurance test (I did listen to the whole thing). One or two tracks were good, but as a whole it was boring.
2.5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n39897a9hNk Funny, after having two albums in a row that surprised me with their country influence, we have one that surprised me with how country it ISN’T. Not that I thought CSN were a full-on country group per se, but I guess I was expecting a bit more twang than what we got - which was more like a second-rate Simon & Garfunkel album. Yeah, I’m not really getting the hype surrounding this one. The harmonies are great and all, but I didn’t really find anything about the songwriting overly interesting. Like, as someone who typically writes far more than anyone asked for, I’m left without much to say. For the most part, no song really stuck out to me more than another, but ironically, my least favorite is apparently the group’s most popular, Helplessly Hoping. Not for any strong reason exactly, but I hated the lyric: “They are one person They are two alone They are three together They are for each other” I’m not even entirely sure why if I'm being honest, but it kind of pissed me off a little bit each time I heard it. Still, not an album that I would call bad or that I hated, but one that really did nothing for me in my listening. If I wanted this kind of sound, I would much rather listen to Simon & Garfunkel instead.
ami vibe, it’s ok.
If Simon and Garfunkel were stoners, they would be CSN. Let me restate, if Simon and Garfunkel were hard core stoners, they would be CSN. This album was a drug: it started strong with Judy Blue Eyes, which was the bong rip; Marrakesh Express was the high kick; Wooden Ships through Helpless Hoping was the ride; and Long Time Gone was when the munchies kick in when you discover the pizza was delivered an hour ago. For me, their harmonies have always been detrimentally lacking in needed variation, and, though admirable, gets monotonous after a while. Plus, I know Stephen Stills can rock a guitar better than this album shows. This feels like a product of the time and doesn’t translate to modern times, at least for me. If I was completely blazed, this would be the BEST…album…ever! But I’m not. Pity.
Wanted to like this/was curious about CS&N but it just wasn't for me
I'm not sure if I had a horrible bout of the stomach flu, strep throat or some other ailment as a child while my parents played Crosby, Stills & Nash, but I just can't get through this album without feeling ill.
Probably better than CSNY, but I’ll take The Byrds over this.
Ok very dated feel to it
O.k. but too old fashioned for my taste.
It seems like country rock (I'm not really sure if that exists), light listening but I don't think I would listen to this again on purpose.
I didn't really feel to intrigued to keep listening.
Crazy how I love this genre and era, but when I listened to this it just didn't quite hit me at all in the right way. Felt very boring and slow the whole way through. Just felt like I was waiting for it to end.
This album hasn't aged well. I know these guys get high praise for their harmonization, but it doesn't carry through for 41 minutes. I hate to say it, having listened to something like six of his albums on this list already, but I think these guys were better with the edginess of Neil Young.
pretty dry.
These guys have just never been quite my thing. The harmonies are pretty, I guess, and it takes skill, but I just don’t need to spend so much of my life listening to dudes sing like that. Also, I feel there’s a disconnect between guys obviously living late ‘60s hard but wanting me to believe they are so mellow. Probably pulls hippie tail pretty successfully. “Wooden Ships” is a banger, and I groove with the end of “Judy Blue Eyes” despite myself, but the rest doesn’t provoke anything but snores.
Don't care for it. Some classic songs on here but the boy band vibe is even more dull than the usual white folk man stuff.
Not for me. I like country, but this was too bland.
Gosh this album is a bore. Not awful, just boring.
If this album had come up two years ago, I might have been inclined to rate it higher. But there's so much of this type of music on the list - not just Crosby, Stills, Nash and fucking Neil Young and every iteration thereof - but 1960s harmonies (Mamas & Papas, Beach Boys), twangy rock (Creedence), bluesy rock (too many bands to count). I'm just over it. There's more music out there - genres, artists, fuck, I'd take a Muppets movie soundtrack than listen to yet another 1960s bluesy, harmonizing, Boomer masturbation fest.
Pretty boring.
Crosby, Stills & Nash - Self-Titled It's alright. I appreciate that they were trying to experiment with new sounds back then, but some of the songs here sound stale in comparison, so much in fact that they make even the chill songs sound better than them. But with that aside, it does offer quality and consistency, especially in the second half, offering country with mix of blues and a little of rock. Overall, this is decent! 1.- Suite: Judy Blue Eyes = 8/10 2.- Marrakesh Express = 5/10 3.- Guinnevere = 7/10 4.- You Don't Have to Cry = 6/10 5.- Pre-Road Downs = 6/10 6.- Wooden Ships = 8/10 7.- Lady of the Island = 7/10 8.- Helplessly Hoping = 7/10 9.- Long Time Gone = 8/10 10.- 49 Bye-Byes = 6/10 FINAL SCORE: 6.6/10
Just ok.
Nope
I’d be lying if I called this outright bad, but I just don’t care about it.
Turned out not to be my genre. There was a couple of tracks that sounded perculiar, but all in all this one failed to resonate with me.
Well I found this a pretty dull album that sort of washed by me.
You’d think a supergroup would have a little more variety in their songwriting. “Song without words” was just not good. By the end I was surprised you could mess up just going “La la la” and “du du Dudu” but one of them was sounding so dumb with their nonsense it was hard to take it seriously. I thought I actually liked them as a group but as a band that has been on my “gotta give them a deep dive” list, I am a bit disappointed overall. At least 5 of those songs were the same thing. We get it, you can harmonize. Maybe without Neil Young they don’t hit as hard.
List is way too saturated with these guys. Some good songs, but giving it a 2.
Not my genre
As a thing unto itself I really appreciated the harmonies. However, as a whole the album just felt like "generic sound to indicate it's the 60s". I know that's not their fault, but it's not great for me personally. All that said, I did really like Helplessly Hoping. I watched Annihilation a couple of days ago and they used the song and it was really great for mood setting. But I also think that underscores my main point. Still a great song though.
I don’t know how I feel about this one. Obviously talented musicians, great harmonies, but it just doesn’t do much for me. I saw them in the 90s and it was an enjoyable show, but I’ve never considered buying a CS&N album of even felt like I needed to hear one of their songs. It good enough, but maybe it’s just not for me.
The last song on here, 49 Bye Byes is great, the rest is a slog, albeit one with great harmonies. Still, dated in a way that mostly bores the shit out of me.
Eh album
This album is relatively mundane, it's a decent foray into basic folk but so much of the middle is filler and sounds the same (with that same being a bit boring). The top tracks are the first and last, all the harmonizing in the middle feels a little corny. I'm surprised "Marrakesh Express" was a top 40 single because I didn't like that one at all. "Long Time Gone" is decent. CS&N are way better with Young but he's better without them, let that sink in...2.25.
We got a bookend album here. 1st track is top and the whole middle was decent song writing I guess but lost me in the boredom and slow song drudgery. The final track is a stripped down version of what we are used to but still pretty good and really the only other that stands out. Get way better when they add Neil...1.8.
The best way I can sum up Crosby, Stills & Nash is "it's fine I guess". There's nothing bad about it, but there's also nothing great about it once you get past the opening Suite Judy Blue Eyes. It's a good example of some OK folky rock from the 70's, it just isn't a genre that moves the needle much from me. Crosby, Stills and Nash are all clearly competent writers and musicians, but nothing on the opening album makes a big splash for me. I can't help but think that CSN was an OK act that needed Y to put them over the top. 2.31 stars
This album was all right. The songs that made it into the “Best of” album are good (Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Wooden Ships, Teach Your Children Well-though I don’t like the version on this album), and their harmonies and playing are fine. CSN really benefits from having a Y though-Neil Young wrote this band’s best songs and brings a better energy to the group overall. Kind of snoozy, this one. 2.5 stars, probably wouldn’t revisit.
Boring and uninspired
Pleasant enough harmonies but with nothing else to latch onto the album ends up being sleepy. Don't think I will be revisiting anything here beyond the opener. Crazy to think that they would go on to make Deja Vu just a year later (maybe Y is the missing ingredient).
Too 60s for me, sadly.
Kinda boring, not a lot going on.
It was ok but none of the songs really clicked with me
Some pleasant parts. My issue is that, though the harmonies are nice, there are vocal harmonies on absolutely everything. It's all very tasteful. Maybe a bit dated? The more I listen, the more I think of Andy Bernard from The Office. Constantly searching for a vocal harmony.
So earnest and gentle! The later album with Young is definitely better, but I can certainly see why this one got so much attention. Well done, guys 👏
Meh, this was fairly inoffensive. I’m sure my dad had this record and it kinda sounded like his sort of thing but for me it’s forgettable
It wasn’t my bag
Not my style, I see the appeal
folk
Some good songs, pretty chill album
aint listening to another gilly billy ahh album
This was OK not my fav genre ngl I find it really depressing lol I liked judy blue eyes and helplessly hoping
I don't dislike many artists but CS&N just rub me the wrong way. If Neil Young can't make your band better, what does that say about your band?
They took all the good parts away from "Everybody's Talkin'" and "Teach Your Children," and made them both more boring. That's a feat. I don't understand enjoying their harmonies. Highly overrated in my opinion.
Pretty aimless and uninteresting. Too folky too. Only exception is Everybody's Talkin', which is excellent
So I anticipated that this would be a slow, dreary, sad, and depressing slog, but the slow, dreary, sad depressing slog was slower, drearier, sadder, and more depressing than I anticipated it would be.
I'm not enough of a Boomer for this shit...
Horny for harmony (again)
It's not bad, but come on, so many generic records on this list. I get that old music is good but not that good to include so many records that sound almost the same.
Another stinker 2 stars. i like the idea of this music, but the reality is I'm bored with how slow and inoffensive it is. It's I guess a fine listen at work, but I find it also boring as sin. Oh well.
hey 60s folk guys nobody cares about your take on Guinnevere. This sucks, and I don't want to think about it. Should it be 1 star? Maybe. I don't want to think about it. music: hated. ( -_-)
Campfire music
This is #day11 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... unfortunately, I can't say much about this selection. I don't mind some folk once in a while, but this was a little too dragging. "Long Time Gone" is probably the most memorable cut here. Sorry guys, but this is a 2 out of 5 this time. Looking forward to #day12.
It was fine
Alternates between grating and boring. Not good.
