Reviews (page 10 of 12)
They talk about deez nuts a lot.
ya un petit bruit aigu tt le temps je sais que c le but mais pendant l'album entier bon
Some of my woke friends constantly criticise 90s hip hop / rap for being misogynistic and glorifying guns and violence. They are correct.
Meh I got bored listening sometimes to the same thing but it was good for its time
Bitches Ain't Shit is clever at least
I dont think I will ever understand the skits that serve no purpose but to say they have lots of sex, otherwise its a good example of early 90s rap but I think there is better examples.
This felt like the longest album I've had to listen to so far. I've always preferred East Coast over West when it comes to 90s rap, and so I knew I wasn't gonna love this, but god something about it just dragged. Each song took minutes longer than it should've. Favorites: Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin'), Nuthin' But A "G" Thang, Lyrical Gangbang
This hasn't aged well lyrically. At times repetitive, needlessly offensive and tiring. Some great G Funk beats in there though, and G Thang goes alright.. but I think I'd rather just listen to P Funk instead.
Man they really hate women
Not my style Dre and snoop are iconic for hip hop and the roots for hiphop artist ibdo like such as kendrick. Just the album isnt something i would repeat myself.
Pitches and Hos y'know. GTA San Andrea's almost to an explicit pastiche. Rather gratuitous for my liking, being back the DAISY age.
Influential, obviously, there are times where I just found myself drawn into the beat and flow of what was happening; it just didn't age well for me, personally.
Not my jam.
Not my taste
Not my type of music but enjoyed it in the background
No me gusta el género mucho, y las letras no conectaron conmigo
They're grinding me down.
The beats and riffs are good; one can recognize Dr. Dre's signature even in his debut album. The colab with Snoop adds the cherry on top. And then, all goes down with the lyrics. Gangsta, misogynistic, and homophobic, as most of the lyrics from this era are.
324/1089 - It's good for what it is. I don't like West Coast Hip Hop. The compton whistle sound is really grating and I prefer the jazz beats on the east coast. In fact, this album would be a lot better if instead of being called "The Chronic" it replaced "The" with "Syn" and added "ity" at the end so it'd be called "Synchronicity" by the Police.
Nice and groovy. Wouldn’t enjoy the lyrics these days..
Oh hell, nah. Misogynist bible.
Noo my style
Beats and sampling are innovative and fun but the lyrics full of misogyny, violence, and profanity detract from the overall creation. Despite Dre being in his late 20’s feels like he’s permanently stuck in adolescence.
See notes on Snoop, as predicted by Mr. Miller.
Not really a fan
So 90s in its use of the spoke element. I had only ever heard 2 of these songs before. Definitely not my genre and poses some interesting arguments about the n word in music to then be consumed by white listeners. I respect his artistry as he is an amazing producer and so have to acknowledge this as a brilliant rap album from the 90s that changed the game for others.
Great beats and Nuthin' But a G Thang is a classic, but the album themes and use of certain language made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.
Day688 - i wasn’t a fan in 1992 and it’s only gotten more problematic
The whole album seems to repeat basically six lines that are just callbacks to previous records. It's not awful, but I straight up don't understand the appeal. Like why are Dre and Snoop shitting on Easy E? Makes no sense to me. I guess I just think people should leave the petty drama at home. Airing your dirty laundry on a whole album like this is childish.
Nuthin' But A "G" Thing
I was actually enjoying quite a few of these tracks. But the skits and that last track, just not for me.
I can't sing along to this one
A third of this was enough. I thought they were good beers but oh boy I was fed up with the n word!
Didn't like it then and I still don't. Many a heated arguments between my brother and I took place over this album. Is what it is.
This is more of an artefact than a great album. Its a collection of good beats than a treasure trove of great songs. Dre's rapping has never been top notch and the subject matter to a large extent is tiresome
Well I made it through most of this not being an hip-hop fan at ALL so I definitely was not the audience here. It had some good beats for sure but absolutely not for me, but 2 stars.
2.5
2.5 - production was good, lyrics not so much.
Never gave a full listen to this album, but have listened to Eminem albums produced by Dr. Dre when I was younger. Sadly, I don't truly relate to the sound of this era in Hip Hop, though I put that thought on hold and gave the album a listen without any prejudices - purely listening to an album as exploration without thinking about its context or the artists involved in its making. I was also quite high on cannabis oil during the first listen after receiving the recommendation and I was preoccupied with some work and found myself drifting and grooving to the beats. The production is smooth, and the melodies are cute, but overall I wasn't Wowed. Seems repetitive and the skits don't really help break the mould.
Never got the hype for this one. Dre has obviously been really important for hip-hop but I've never been able to figure out what exactly he has that's so special. I don't even like the beats on this album that much. And while rap in any form is always going to be accused of ignorant lyricism, this album really has it in spades. I reviewed Nas' Illmatic a couple weeks ago, and even without digging deep in the lyrics there is an identifiable vulnerability and a human feeling. This album doesn't have that. Snoop Dogg is a better rapper and even has better beats on his album. Ice Cube obviously was the best rapper to come out of N.W.A. This? Eh.
No private session used for Spotify. Eavesdropper guilt was in full effect listening to this. I have covered this before, but the use of the N word makes me think I shouldn't be listening to this and this album has an extreme amount of the N word. Add the misogyny and I can't think of why I would listen this again. No offense, Doc, but this wasn't made for me.
Hmmm…I wanted to enjoy this but didn’t much. I often do enjoy rap, and I know the themes on this album came from a particular time and place. NWA’s Straight Outta Compton and the 2015 biopic of the same name (both of which are really good) are directly relevant personnel-wise and putting the history into some context. And I gather (plus it’s obvious by comparison to NWA material) that The Chronic represented a major musical and production style shift for hip hop that was hugely influential. But those groundbreaking innovations have long since become mainstream so they’re harder to appreciate now. And the lyrics and their themes and attitudes just feel dated (and often uncomfortable) now. Although of course I’m a million miles from the demographic that might have been in tune with this anyway, so maybe that’s unsurprising.
4/10 Top track: Nuthin' But A "G" Thang Some good hip hop moments but not as consistent as later work.
2.3
It’s another hip-hop album that sounds exactly the same as all the other hip-hop albums. And it’s over an hour long.
Understand its significance but found it a tough listen. Hoping 2001 shows up on this list. Fav tracks: Nuthin But a G Thing. Saved a song: N RYM: Y (#930)
Whilst I can appreciate Snoops delivery, the influence of the album for emergence of West Coast rap and the laid back vibes - unfortunately for me - this is massively overshadowed by the lyrical content and its endless swears, sexism and bull shit gangsta bravado.
I liked the beats. Especially in NWAG (don't wish to write that) Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat and Lyrical Gangbang. Not so keen on that keyboardy organ thing, and skits. The sex skits and mentioning dicks brings out the Mary Whitehouse in me. I'm a white 40 year old woman from England - definitely not the target audience - so a lot of it sounds childish to me.
Not my bag
Some interesting beats, but "I'm better than you and I'm gonna shoot you, also women suck" is such a terrible, lazy conceit.
Love Dr Dre but had never listened to this. Wasn’t for me.
This hour-long rant about guns, money, n—-as and hoes could have been an email.
Very dated, I get the importance of this album but didn't find it particularly enjoyable
Jäi pigem nõrgaks
Definitely not my music type, but I’m giving it an extra point because it contains some loops that reminded me of my Casio keyboard from the early 90s.
Musically, this is very good. Lyrically, it’s poor and dated.
Honestly what is this even about? What’s the point of promoting your own record label when the people who listen to the music already bought the album? Besides the lack of topics, it was chill but constantly interrupted which made it difficult for me to get in the flow. Love hiphop, but this album wasn’t my thing.
Standouts Nothin' But a G Thing
What's up with rap skits where we are listening to them fuck?
Если смотреть на год релиза этого альбома, то это супер впечатляющая вещь (супер биты и Снуп Дог). Если не смотреть на год релиза этого альбома, то это ну такое (Снуп Дог). Лучшая песня - Nuthin' but a "G" Thang.
Whilst I can appreciate Snoops delivery, the influence of the album for emergence of West Coast rap and the laid back vibes - unfortunately for me - this is massively overshadowed by the lyrical content and its endless swears, sexism and bull shit gangsta bravado.
Ok? This guys music is called revolutionary. I’m not denying it. If I was in the right timeline and setting I’m sure this would be great. But from where I’m sitting, it’s comically irrelevant. Anyway, it made me chuckle.
2.5
I get that this is some sort of fundamental rap/hip-hop album, and I respect that. However, this clearly wasn’t for me, and I probably won’t listen to this again.
I didn't give this album that much time, as listening to it I think the production is obviously next level and the some basslines caught my attention but apart from that it's not really for me. I found myself bopping along to it as I listened and enjoyed it until I suddenly stopped for the 20th time hearing about a dick being sucked or something awful about a woman. It's from a time and I'm sure there's some huge cultural reason for the misogyny (lol can there be...but i'm willing to hear it if there is) but if nothing else it doesn't age well and so therefore I'm happy to accept this album is important in the history of rap and hip hop but not something that I'll be listening to again probably.
Growing up in Horsham , this album totally nails what it was like for a young white boy and his b**ch. Guns , drugs and beef
The sound was alright but hard to get past the lyrics. I’m sure this is a big deal for people into rap but I can’t say I’m a big fan.
Found the general flow of the album much better than other hip hop artists. However, the lyrics are awful, offensive and cringey. Act like a grown up you clown!
schreeuw negers met boze woorden
I like the beats and that’s about it.
Really not a gangsta rap girl, can't pretend I enjoyed it
Ehh
Didn't mind it.
S'ok
Cool beats. Lyrics are violent and misogynistic of course, plus he really likes talking about his dick. Makes me wonder what would have happened if gangsta rap never occurred?
2.5
the beats were good but why does this man talk about his balls so much
I remember when this hit, it was pretty much the first hip hop album I experienced. A buddy was really into it, a bandmate actually, and I just couldn’t quite get what it was that was turning him on. I get it more now, but how do listeners not tire of these guys talking up their sexual prowess and big dicks and other BS exploits? The posturing is exhausting and juvenile and I just don’t give a shit.
nah...didn't really do anything for me. I was trying to like it. Do I need to find a new nickname for my husband?
I'm not a huge fan of hip hop/rap, the emphasis on the beat and the similarity from song to song, makes it hard for me to appreciate. I do like the "spoken word" aspect of the lyrics. But overall, not for me.
*The Chronic* Belive it or not I decided to listen to the album again just to be more percice in my criticism. First of all I like the way this album starts off. Honestly there is a certain playfulness to the delivery... Especially Snoop. I could done without the Deez Nuts skit with a joke I commonly attribute to Andrew Dice Clay and I can't stand his comedy. Starting with "Lil Ghetto Boy" it gets more closer to the gangster rap I really have a hard time with. Hyper violent hyper hateful...with out dissing the art it fills me with hate and I don't like feeling that. Maybe it's supposed to end I can respect it for that but as a form of entertainment it is nothing I enjoy experiencing. "$20 sack Pyramid" and "The Doctors office" I'm sorry but those skits just sucks! The only highlight I have for the latter ⅔ of the albums is "The Roach" which brings back the laid back grove of the first third that I did like. I can't stand the closing ultra misogynistic track, and as popular that one seems to be with the Gen Xers... I don't get it... It's just downright disparaging in my ears. I'm again very conflicted on where to rate this. Mainly because I can do without listening to this album again. A few songs from five tracks and "The Roach" I do like, but that's about it. I do recognize its place on this list, but if I'm going to be real about my feelings. (5.25) ★★½
Maybe it’s just me not generally being a fan of hip hop but I wasn’t really feeling this album. Maybe I’m spoiled, maybe I’m picky, I can totally understand someone liking this album. Especially when it was fresh at the time of release. But this just ain’t for me. The beats were cool, but something about listening to the entire album just felt exhausting
Misogynistic Gangsta' Rap. The vocabulary doesn't offend me, it's just pointless. There is some social/political commentary, but most of it is just wannabe gangster dudes holding their thangs. No thank you - nothing to appreciate or respect on here.
Hasn’t aged well, if it was ever current it is now a weird historical snapshot
-Not my favorite combo of songs -I like hiphop and stuff but this really isn't my style or forte -Can appreciate some aspects -I acknowledge that it's iconic, I just can't get behind it
I appreciate this album introduced a new sub-genre of hip-hop that, for whatever else you might think, sounds great. However Snoop really carries this album and it is not my opinion that Dr. Dre is a great rapper. It is a very long album and by the end I was really ready for it to be over.
3/10 Man I hate gangsta rap. Jeez, it's so aggressive and vile and nasty. It means nothing to me so it is painful. I can't give it 1 star because occasionally I enjoy something musically about it, but come on...
Not my type of music. I did not like this album
Gets tedious fast.
Back in my hip hop days, Dre was never at the top of my list. Even now, I can appreciate that this album has some good, catchy production and beats. On the flip side, most hip hop just doesn’t have the same effect on me anymore, and lyrics like the ones on this album don’t hit as hard as they used to, they just fall flat for me now.
Interesting stuff, still sounds pretty subversive despite being more than 30 years old (!!!) which is cool. Some of the beats have aged well while others with that crazy loud G-funk blaring fire alarm synth can get quite annoying. If I found the rapping engaging at all I would probably rate this a 3 but as it stands I can't say I enjoyed it THAT much though more than I expected to Fav song: Lyrical Gangbang (Great drums)
Technically adept, and must have sounded great in 1992. But now as then I find the performance of hypermasculinity boring and depressing.
ikoninen hip hop setti, paljon sämplätty tätä albumia ja oli paljon muita klassikoita. hot stuff. paikoin meni kuitenkin oman maun ulkopuolle
people can't stop talking about their dicks
By the end of the album, I found myself beginning to question if this gentleman was even a doctor!
#19 Best Albums Ever... seriously. Sorry, not for me. I don't want to put a fork through my eardrums but I do want to click next next next.
Take a shot every time they say something your grandma would get mad at
Not the best of Dre of Snoop. Doesn’t really age well either. Ah well
Timeless beats on here but listening in 2025 I don't have the patience for all of the adolescent diss track stuff that preoccupies the whole beginning of the album
try not to say the n-word every 20 seconds challenge: failed
Not my genre. I can appreciate the historical importance of this album but not my type of music.
Not really my genre
395/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
I had always heard that Dr. Dre was a pinnacle figure in early rap but really wasn't too familiar with his music. I appreciated what felt like a missing pieces of the puzzle and hearing how this album helped establish a found that would become iconic and make room for so many other massive rappers - that much is evident. With this context I appreciate this album but really didn't love the overall sound
The doctor seems to be slightly obsessed by the size of his dick. That says it all really. The version of P Funk is, obviously, the best thing on here, but doesn’t hold a candle to the original from Morhership Connection (an album I discovered from this list). To suggest, as Wikipedia does, that this version “samples” that is taking the piss a bit to be honest. It’s a less good cover. The best thing about the original is that it doesn’t mention anyone’s dick.
did not go through it all, not for me
I like the instrumentals. The lyrics are just not the greatest.
2/5
A real DeezzzNutzzz manifesto.
I was a huge fan of gangsta rap originator Eazy E when I was a kid. The themes and stories put forth by these rappers seemed like cautionary tales, journal entries, and descriptions of autobiographical trauma. But that's also a pretty generous reading. It was also misogynistic, violent, and deeply anti-social. And it was 100% designed to shock in that way. I dunno how it didn't leave more of a negative impact on me when I was 12, but so it goes. What started as a gritty, raw, and anti-social genre with 80s gangsta rap by the 90s had also become a commercialized cash cow. There was lots of stacks to be made off music about murder and pimping. Despite Dre's pedigree as a genuine originator of the genre, this shit—at least lyrically—felt problematic to me back then, and remains problematic to me now. My issue with it is this: aside from finding a lot of themes explored in gangsta rap as repellant in all its violence and misogyny; it was also broadly received by a lot of the fandom as a thing to laud and aspire toward. ThIs resulted in an entire generation of kids who wanted to live that urban struggle experience sometimes more than vicariously. Realness politics abounded. Aside from fans who wanted to live the G life for real, it also spawned an entire generation of poser "studio gangster" performers and poser fuckhead fans, who glorified the thug life resulting from redlined urban destitution, senseless criminal violence, sexism, and murder as somehow cool. I had to sell a lot of these posers cassettes and CDs of this stuff working at Tower Records in Sacramento in the 90s. And they were annoying as hell. (This whole critique also applies to Scandinavian black metal and goregrind dorks). Anyhow, if I step back and just relax, yes, at the end of the day it was all entertainment. Not to be taken all that seriously. I don't need to feel like I've suddenly turned into my parents about all this. But I also lived in a place and time that was so heavily influenced by the aggressive machismo and the thug-life wannabe idolatry in gangsta rap that I found myself walking into dangerous situations pretty regularly in public spaces without any provocation. I was chased, saw friends get beat, and had friends actually die. I don't blame the art for this, necessarily, but rather the way it was interpreted and glorified and cosplayed by the idiot fandom. So, The Chronic....Undeniably an important record and cultural artifact. Lots of bangers throughout. The production slaps and some of the bars are quite impressive. For me, however, it's all too loaded and I can't look away form the negativity and toxicity this all seems to celebrate. And Dre made millions off it. If you give it a deep listen the music is compelling, yes, but the lyrics are incredibly off-putting. Despite being a classic it's really aged like milk. PS: I dunno if this was one of the first records with a lot of skits, but I know this: skits on hip-hop records were an exceedingly tiresome trend that I absolutely hated from the first one. So dumb. You weren't Rudy Ray Moore, so i dunno why you even tried.
** Rap crap
Dre heralds the death of introspective rap with an album that ages like milk.
Good flow and beats but the lyrics are not it. I really dislike how most rap from the 90s is misogynistic and/or homophobic.
Fine
I enjoyed (tolerated?) this a bit more than the the rap album we had yesterday. Offensive? Nah, it all seems rather silly to me.
Seminal beats, but the world has moved on
"Ya know what I'm sayin'?" After an hour of this, sure I know what you're saying... and you kiss your mother with that mouth?
I do enjoy the 90s west coast rap beat/flow but that on its own isn’t enough. Interesting to hear quite a bit of Snoop on this album and actually hearing him knock out some decent bars is a novelty having grown up on his mainstream days. But it’s not for me and some of the standard gangster rap stuff is just very regrettable on account of being both boring and vulgar. Call me a Victorian prude.
I wont repeat my normal reasoning on this genre. Usual Cock / Cocain bingo amongst other select penis words. No thank you.
While I admittedly don’t listen to a lot of rap music I did actually buy Dr Dre’s 2001 back when I started listening to Eminem and I really liked it so there was high hopes for this one. Unfortunately while I liked a few tracks, overall this wasn’t for me. There wasn’t anything that was really bad, it’s just that even the tracks I liked weren’t anything spectacular. Top Track - Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat
Listened awhile ago on a previous attempt at an album challenge. Just can't get behind it, boring lyrics
Yeah I do not enjoy this
Not sure how many times the N word needs to be said over the course of this record. No need. Again, it’s gangsta wrap that I find cringe. There are some good beats in the songs, but no real melodic songs. Although that’s to be expected.
Not as good as I expected, basically saying the same thing every single track. Nothing particularly sophisticated. Wouldn’t listen to it again
Some sick beats and instrumentals but eventually ended up sounding like a one hour long song.
Whilst this album is iconic and incredibly influential, i personally don't enjoy it all that much. Gang violence, drugs, poor treatment of women and police brutality were all a reality for the people on this album but i don't feel those things were portrayed in a way that's remained as fulfilling as it once would have been. In my opinion this album is more about bragging over beats rather than painting a picture of life in Compton for young African American men. Compare this album to 'Ready to Die' by Biggie Smalls and then differences in terms of instrumental variety and lyrical depth are night and day. Most tracks feel the same, continuing for 4 minutes with little development, there are a few standouts though. Fav tracks - The Chronic (intro) - The Day The Fellas Took Over - Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat - Lyrical Gangbang (gross name though) - The Roach (The Chronic Outro) 3/10
Dre - Chronic - Review so there’s stuff on this I like, such as all of Snoop Dogg’s rapping, and clearly the hit is a great song- Nothin but a G thing, but it just isn’t my thing. The anger especially against women just makes me a little sad. I understand that this is a protest album and I can’t say I blame anyone in the culture from South Central for writing and rapping about this stuff. It’s just doesn’t appeal to me though well, I liked 50 Cent pretty well. I’m gonna have to give this album a 2.
Language, Timothy
Dr. Dre’s debut. Classic early 90s hip hop. One of most influential rap albums. Kind of bores me, misogyny is a turn off. Same goes for the homophobia.
I was hoping this would be quality entertainment; instead it’s just an immaculately produced mixtape that’s almost a Snoop album more than anything Dre ever did. I dunno, there’s just little to nothing here, not even for content but just for being boring as shit. Probably better when you’re high, maybe.
I was definitely grooving to the beat of this. Dre can make great tracks. He can also pick the talent, as is evident by great contributions by Snoop, Kurupt, Lady of Rage, and Nate Dogg on this, and will become increasing clear when he signs Eminem. Lyrically, though, he's pretty stale. He's got a few good bars, but it's just "I'm cool, right?" I have sex, I do drugs, I do crimes. It's not providing insight or feeling into those aspects, it's just making sure you know he's checking the rap boxes. It's not until the last song that I get the feeling that Dre actually has any feelings for the actual subject. And it's the best performance by Dre the rapper. A not so quick aside: these skits are absolute trash. Raunchy humor is fine, but this isn't that. It's not a joke. It's just, again, I have sex. Also, no other man should have sex. Just Dr. Dre. The only sex allowed is with Dr. Dre. That's the only "joke." This might be the most disappointing album so far. I like when Dre produces for Eminem, I like a lot of Snoop, and I was going to say Nate Dogg deserved more support, but a quick Wikipedia search made it pretty clear why he didn't have the output you'd expect. It's got great production, but Dre doesn't actually have anything to say. He definitely belongs in the booth.
This is not at all for me. Homophobic and misogynistic. I liked it musically but not at all lyrically. I didn’t “get” it then and I don’t now. Gangsta rap was not the rap I liked.
the music isnt good enough to grant the misogyny (there are albums where it almost is)
This will always be the sound of the dorms to me.
Streit
4/10…90er Hip Hop
The music is very good, the lyrics pretty standard and tiresome, no innovation between n and b and mf. If anyone would stretch beyond diss would be a revelation.
Just not my thing and I know it is not meant to be my thing.
This music isn't written for me. While I appreciate it as a debut record with his departure from NWA and for possibly moving rap forward, there is nothing for me in terms of relatable content.
Overrated
This is definitely better than the noise rock album that I rated a 2 (I should go back and make that a 1), but I wouldn’t listen to this whole album again. It’s really cool to listen and learn for historical context, but hip-hop in general isn’t my favorite I guess
I mean there's a couple great songs, and I appreciate the production value, but it felt a little repetitive. I don't think I'll be listening to this very often, especially with the kids around.
infinitamente mais chato do que eu achei q fosse ser

The hits are mega, a LOT of questionable lyrics.
trying really hard to think about reasons for 1 or 2 stars. guess it's not compleeeetely annoying, so 2 stars...
A few decent tracks but nothing new or exciting here
Ehhh. If HipHop can’t be traced back to those dudes dancing in their high-waisted pants in the video for “Apache” then it’s not for me. I didn’t enjoy this (I know it’s not meant to be enjoyed, but…) and gotta say I just can’t find it in me to listen to this gangster rap stuff
not my vibe so much
yawn
sorry Dre.
Contrary to its classic status, The Chronic is not a good album. The production, while influential, is fairly shotty, the rapping performances are mediocre for the most part, and the lyricism is just not there. 2001 STOMPS
I like rap music but I feel like this album aged poorly. This is an important milestone for gangsta rap and Compton. But I would not listen to this again except for two songs. Sad. Profanities fall out of time.
After few good classic hip hop albums on this list we have approached Dr. Dre and his attempt from early 90s. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this album, I found it quite boring and honestly slightly repulsive. The beats weren't bad, but the lyrics and the flow just completely missed the mark, in my uneducated opinion. One of weaker rap records on this list.
Pretty sure the heart of this album is in the lyrics…which I did not listen to
Feels like this didn't age great
Mourning tunes
For most of the album I really couldn’t find the beat but a few songs stuck out to me. And yes the production is good but how much screeching can I hear? Lil Ghetto Boy was good tho
Lyrics mostly about guns and wieners. Production is good and yeah it makes sense to be on this list, but there's not much here I enjoy. Too long, the skits are trash, and won't revisit this again. If I'm listening to hip hop from this era I'm going for something else. Probs not west coast at all cause it all got infected by Dre at some point in the 90s. Give me something like Public Enemy or Paul's Boutique instead any day. Ice Cube is better too. Weak 2/5
I wanted to enjoy it. I know it’s a classic, a legendary hip hop album of the 90s. The beats are so solid. But the lyrics are corny as all hell! A whole ass song about your nuts, Dre? Flexin badass bc you smoke weed? Sayin “I’m big bad and powerful bc I have a gun” brother that’s corny as hell!
Maso
Not a good album, it was just a worse version of doggystyle. This can be forgotten by history
The first half was a lot better than the second. The first half wasn't very good.
Ich mag diesen Rap Stil nicht so sehr.
Gads this doesn't hold up well at all, much fun as it was to hear the Lady of Rage again. I forgot she was part of the Death Row posse. Anyway, lots of words about shooting people, "hey I'm totally not gay but you'll be sucking my dick," drugs, and such. Oh yeah -- the samples are cool. But there's no cachet here anymore.
Ok
beats are incredible but damn these verses are pretty awful the flows aren't great and the lyrics get monotonous after a bit
It was ok. Not really my style though.
Nicht mein Fall
Not a standout for me … probably wouldn’t listen again.
This album ain't shit but hoes and tricks 😔 Snoop is really carrying this album, his verses are far and away the best on here, which isn't saying much. In the end it's a lot of posturing and somehow every single track is about Dre's dick. The backing music and beats are great though. They've aged well and I think elevate the overall album. Without the beats it would be wholly unremarkable.
Not my thing, but a good album
Took me like three years to finish this album. Ab unfortunate slog.
Not anywhere near as good as 2001
Upon first listen, I don’t love some of the subject matter (it's a lot of "hoes and bitches") but I recognize the high production value, especially for this time period. I get it but it won’t be a regular listen.
One of Brad’s faves
Fragile masculinity: the album. I would likely have preferred this album if I didn't speak English, as I could then have just listened to the funky beats instead of having to hear these lyrics with utterly on the nose rhymes and desperately boastful lyrics about crime, large dicks and hating Eazy-E. Most (white) people I know unfortunately write off all of hip hop as violent non-music; I fully blame this album for that reputation.
Just not a genre I can get into, even when I was a kid I really wasn’t a fan. It has more variety and is more compelling than other rap albums of the time, but still have no desire to listen to it.
I liked to hear a classic from the hip hop genre, but is not the type of music I can listen while I work, it gets me distracted
Źle się zestarzało. Warstwa tekstowa mierna, a i rytm czasem kuleje. Snoop zawsze na propsie, ale reszta? Czym do jasnej ciasnej jest $20 sack pyramid? Niektóre kawałki są ok, ale reszta ściąga je na dno przeciętności, jeśli nie niżej. 4.5/10
Jfc.
This man is obsessed with his own dick.
This abkum supprised me in that I didn't hate it, but I don't think the album has aged very well. Best part was the bass lines
In my opinion one of the most meaningless albums I've heard, aside from one song there is nothing memorable about the record. Gangster rap in no way can revel other forms of hiphop and this is a good example of why. THe only thing I could enjoy was the production which was actually very good. Favorite track: Little Ghetto Boy. Overall score: 3.0/10
Meh. Influential, but didn't age well. 1 extra star just for some of the relaxed west coast beats. Would've been better as an instrumental album.
At least the production is interesting.
It may be fun to have Snoop Dogg along, but not enough to make up for the stale air of dissing Eazy-E and gangsta bragging for a whole record.
I hear old funk vibes. I hear really high production quality and sound that must was copied a lot. I also hear utmost boring gangsta rap. Who's dig is longest and who has Desert Eagle. Rather difficult to imagine more boring lyrics. Two stars goes to how old funk is respected and modified carrying that flame forward.
Surprised by how many songs on this I didn’t care for. Anything that wasn’t trying to be catchy felt samey and boring to me. A few hits for sure but didn’t like it much
- yeah, this record killed almost everything that was good about hip hop - some decent tracks but, as others have said, doesn't age well. The book this website is based on is bullshit - there are toooooo many records included that NO ONE needs to hear. ..... one good thing about this project is I'll never need to read the book .... a weak 2.5 for the good tracks -
Did not really enjoy this except for the classic "Nuthin but a G Thang". I don't think it aged well.
I didn't enjoy this album a whole lot, they said the N word way too much and the album just felt long overall. I was also not a fan of the skits, especially The Doctor's Office. Standout track: Nuthin' But A "G" Thang
I just couldn't get beyond the lyrics.
Ja. Kann man sich anhören.
Han er ikke fan af eaze E ihvertfald. Snoop er sej. Med 30 år på bagen er det lidt dateret.
Klassisk hip-hop album. Selvfedt og kedeligt.
Not really for me this, just a load of mysoginists bitching about each other and talking about their dicks!
Not for me I'm afraid... I think everyone in my uni hall of residence was listening to this except me!
Like the previous Gangsta Rap albums that have appeared on this list, the music is enjoyable (but for me, not transcendant) as long as you can ignore the lyrics. The misogyny is gross and for this album in particular, the final song leaves a bad taste that I just can't get past once all is said and done
Ma dick in yo mouth: The album experience
Not for me.
Vraiment pas très bon.
Is it a coincidence that rap albums have always a doctor themed songs with woman's moaning lmao.
okay, i have to ask - what is up with the skits in old school rap? was this a thing that i just wasn't familiar with? i hate them lol. i really don't like when albums have talky bits regardless, so i promise this isn't just a critique of rap. i just want to listen to music without some sort of embarrassing bit happening every 7 minutes 😩 also, is it crazy if i thought there just wasn't a lot going on here? i knew nuthing but a g thang but i wasn't impressed by the flow or the rhymes of many of the other songs. i feel like a lot of songs were padded out with "hell yeahs" in a way that made them feel unfinished/like placeholders. snoop dogg was working overtime popping up in what felt like every single song here which made me laugh too, lol. every time i turned my head snoop was there again. also, not to sound like a pearl-clutching prude, but why so many songs about balls?? they should be seen and not heard. enough about the balls. stop talking about balls!!
yeah i dunno about this one dre. this album is as old as i am but you don't hear me going around harassing women and gay people. i hate sounding like a member of the PMRC but i don't really understand what this braggadocious "I'm the hardest" lyrical style that relies heavily on rampant misogyny, homophobia, and sexual violence adds to the rap and hip-hop genre as a whole. two stars but only because snoop improves a lot of these tracks and the funky backing tracks are solid. favorites: let me ride, nuthin' but a "g" thang
Not a hard rap fan
Kind of juvenile to be honest. Just showing how cool they are?? I can recognize that this was big/groundbreaking for the time, but I couldn't get into it.
Almost a 1 for the lyrics but couldn't put it on the same level as Butthole Surfers
This album is vile. I find it far more misogynistic than your average hip hop album of this era, and the fact that Dr. Dre was actually physically abusive to multiple women really sours a lot of the lyrical impact this album could have had. I also find the beats annoying half the time, with the other half being very inventive with sampling and honoring funk music. I only listened to this album once, and had no interest in listening to it again. It's not irredeemably bad, and it certainly has its historic place, but I don't think this album will be viewed positively in retrospect as time goes on.
Meh
Rap album drinking game - Every time the rappers says his own name - DRINK! Every time the rapper says where he’s from - DRINK! Every time he says how big his dick is - DRINK!
Good old school west coast rap, a lil profane for my current life
Seems like we've moved past this type of rap lot of big dick pop a cap type lyrics. Hard album to get through
Mixed feelings on this. On one hand - it's excellent rap. Funky, fresh, great beats and production, Snoop Dogg is smooth, it's an unblemished representation of Dre's reality. On the other - it's violent, misogynistic, and I don't especially like hearing the n-word every other word. This was a difficult listen for me and I would not ever revisit this. Look Dre is iconic I get it but it's MEH here... also emimem listened to this huh

Not as good as expected.2,4
The high pitched sounds can be a bit annoying. The rapping was above average for the most part. I don't like the sketches. The best song was Lil' Ghetto Boy.
West Coast rap has always irritated me. This kind of record kinda proves my point. The best thing about Dr. Dre is Snoop Dogg. The music is okay. But lyrically it’s a snooze fest. Same old shit. Look at my guns, look at my bitches, I’m so tough, motherfucker deathrowisinthehouse ooohyeahzzzzz… And repeat. Miserable poser fan fiction bullshit. This is why Dionne Warwick took them to task and changed the course of their careers. Bitches be for real moguls now, not just wannabes tossing Monopoly money at video hos. Was really hoping for more. But, as with a lot of these hyped up rappers, I wish I could turn down the vocals, so I can enjoy the music. All hail Funkadelic. 2/5
Some classics beats but not as hard hitting as Dr. Dre’s other solo album - 2001. Still the quintessential example of the G-Funk sound and I really appreciate the instrumentals. Not a massive fan of this one lyrically, though, and that does bring down the experience. The gang culture around rap was real, and a reflection of racial inequalities at the time, so I have never had an issue with gangsta rap: it’s just the blatant misogyny that is a little tough to look past for me and brings this one down a lot. It’s also a bit too bloated.
Just not a genre I can get into. I didn’t enjoy the album…could see why people might, so it gets two stars.
i wanted more this
We once again arrive to something that just isn’t my thing. Most hip hop doesn’t do anything for me. Especially when there’s this much discussion around somebody’s dick. 2/5
that was a lot of the n-word
Ik weet dat dit een 'klassieker' is, maar 't is niet echt m'n ding. Geeft me enkel wat nostalgische vibes naar GTA San Andreas. 2.4*
While I can appreciate the art and science Dre brings to the genre, I still can't get into this album.
How much does this guy talk about his dick? I've heard more variety from white noise. Medium 2.
Kind of just felt like uniform/normal hip hop, nothing memorable.
The beats were good, the lyrics a lot less. Hiphop has come a long way since the chronic and I don't think I will ever listen to this album again.
Lots of swearing, tough talk and N words. Not for me.
- Dr. Dre liebt einfach diesen beschissenen Piep-Ton alter.
Not for me
Фу
I like the sound and beats but too much n bombs and f bombs
The language they used for this album is absolutely disgusting and it should deserve a 1 no doubt. It also aged really badly over the past 30+ years. But musically there were some good tunes which rounds it up to a 2 overall.
Hmmm. Snoop is fun right. And some of the rhymes and beats are catchy. But also a lot of misogynistic penis chat
Pretty innovative. Don’t care for most of the lyrics, but the sounds are cool.
Get past the lyrics (explicit) and the rap (not my thing) and there is some good music under there.
Beats are really good but ya, I don't know, the lyrics seem kind of lame at this point. Was really hoping for something better since I've never sat down with this one front to back before. Oh well.
Take away "nigga," "muthafucka," and "muthafuckin" from this album and what's left? About 2/3 of an album glorifying drugs, violence, and putting "izz" in the middle of words. Funny how mainstream these guys are even after all the horribleness here. The beats are good though.
I remembered it being a lot better
Nothin' But a "G" Thang is the only song on this album worth your time, and it is worth your time. But grown men writing 4th grade level poetry about being killers, while making gun noises is cringe. Knowing George Clinton probably got hella paid off of this makes me feel better about the whole thing.
Muutama kova raita, lyriikat turhan väkivaltaiset.
Sweary. Violent. Not something I'd normally listen to. Am sure there's something deeper but I'm not sure what it is... 🤷🏻♂️
Not really a fan of the vulgarity of a lot of Rap in general.
Not bad, just not for me
Intense and menacing but often entertaining in its way. Excellent beats and really creative use of sampling. I remember when this came out, and it really did change music and the culture in a significant way. But I find lot of the lyrics extremely difficult to hear and I tend to agree with the reviewer who says this album sucked the intellect out of much of hip hop. Not all change is necessarily for the better. Fave Songs: Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang, Lil' Ghetto Boy, Let Me Ride, Lyrical Gangbang
Well executed but I'm not at all into the words.
Let Me Ride and Nuthing' But a 'G' Thang are classic, but the the rest is just a bit much for me.
I didn’t get it
Wikipedia says that this album brought hip hop to a wider audience. Previously the genre was dominated by themes of either partying or political empowerment. Dr Dre helped popularize the gangsta rap subgenre, with the main attention given to excessive violence, drugs and blatant misogyny. That may have sounded shocking in 1992 but it's fairly embarrassing now. Many rap albums of this era are similarly outdated, even if they did honestly reflect a part of the culture. By leaning into the 'tough guy' image so much, there's little left after the smoke clears (pun intended). The drug use isn't offensive but it's a bit childish. The constant need to sound threatening and boast their sexually accomplishments, points to a level of deep insecurity. The production is certainly a significant step forward, bringing the dense rhythms of Parliament/Funkadelic into the genre. But for me, it doesn't hold up well against other, better hip hop albums. Regardless, that production, along with the album's popularity make it an obvious choice for this list. But it really hasn't aged well.
I remember mostly liking this in the 90’s as a teen. Now it just sounds corny. 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽 🌽
Stam kaze
Not great bit samey decent bits
Rollo.
Sorry to report that I didn’t really enjoy it. I thought I could but it was just fine. Only enjoyed small moments- which I think were mainly when other people were rapping. Also she’s faking it at “The Doctor’s Office”
No my thing.
I'm a little loathe to admit it but Robert Christgau's assessment mirrors what I think exactly: "The Chronic (which I still can't stand but respect for its influence and iconicity)" "Dr. Dre: The Chronic [Interscope, 1992] The crucial innovation of this benchmark album isn't its conscienceless naturalization of casual violence. It's Dre's escape from sampling. Other rappers, as they are called, have promised to create their own musical environments, usually without revealing how much art and how much publishing fuels their creative resolve. But Dre is the first to make the fantasy pay out big-time. The world he hears in his head isn't the up-to-date P-Funk fools say they hear--that would be too hard. Instead he lays bassline readymades under simulations of Bernie Worrell's high keyb sustain, a basically irritating sound that in context always signified fantasy, not reality--stoned self-loss or, at a best Dre never approaches, grandiose jive. This is bell-bottoms-and-Afros music, its spiritual source the blaxploitation soundtrack, and what it promises above all is boom times for third-rate flautists--sociopathic easy-listening. Even if it's "just pop music," as some rationalize, it's bad pop music. C+" DNF
oh god, no
From a really fucked up time in a fucked up city. Makes for some really special music which does not resonate vet well with me as of lately.
I think Dr Dre is a damaged, nasty bastard and this is a grim piece of work. And though some of the production and sound engineering here is jaw dropping, I've never been on board with the adoration this record gets, or the genius status afforded to Dre. It's an adolescent violent revenge fantasy of a record. The trademark G-funk sound is incredible but the bars are horrible (except for some of Snoop's features) and the feeling I get is that it's been bullied into existence. I don't really know who's responsible for the odd brilliant moment, I just know that Dre is taking all the credit. I'd go as far as to say this put me off the whole West coast scene for a good while. One of those paradoxes: I really do recognise it deserves a place in the 1001 canon because of what it represents... but I'm scoring it low as I just don't like it and I'll not reach for it. Possibly dodgy lukewarm take: this record propagates institutionally racist and sexist hegemony: brim full of negative stereotypes and painting whole city districts as no go zones. No thanks.
Very strong start to the album, but the second half is pretty weak. Dre got much better and later albums were more polished, but this album is a bit puerile and silly. Nothing wrong with having a little bit of childish fun, but there's not much of substance on the whole album. It's hard to come up with a fair rating for this album. The first 8 tracks are probably a four overall. Interesting, tuneful, enjoyable, and well produced. The second 8 are probably a one. I've gone for two overall, because overall, I think I'd turn this off before getting to the end.
Too much gangsta shit for my taste.
Not really my thing
Helt okej för att vara hip hop.
This isn't my kind of music, and the language is a bit much for me. (now I feel like an old fuddy-duddy)
When you listen to Dre, you know what you’re going to get. Bitch.
Not bad but I think I prefer East Coast hip hop more during this era
Not into this.
Just how I thought it would sound. Have been hearing these sings my whole life; references are eclectic and many. Though from the west coast, feels like a Cubs game in 1995.
Lots of cussing, violent.
not my taste, kinda boring idk. i like bits of each song + fan of snoop collabs LIKE: Fuck Wit Dre Day (And Everbody's Celebratin') RECOGNISE: -
With fresh ears it is interesting how much heavy lifting Parliament does for this album.
Wow - does not age well. Lots of dick sucking talk and N-words. Which I get is part and parcel of the Gangsta Rap genre, but this just feels so over the top that it takes away from Dre’s strengths which are the beats.
Good production, but the album felt pretty boring overall. The lyrics didn’t help.
Beats, samples, and production are epic. Lyrical content sounds like it was written by a 13 year old trying to act hard. Even as a person that swears way too much, this was hard to listen to.
Not familiar to rap music, but i definitely know that i don't like it, I guess that it might be good for the colabs with know rap artist, but idk, it's really not my type at all.
Meh...
I’m glad that I listened to Doggystyle before this and looked up more about the G-Funk era this fell under, as most people consider this to be as much a Snoop album as it is Dre’s. Half the time it feels like Snoop is doing the talking. Same feeling with Doggystyle; there’s obviously something here but it obviously isn’t for me.
It's hard to listen to The Chronic even when I know it's not for me. I'll give it credit for announcing itself and its intentions from the jump and basically delivering on that promise repeatedly. I "enjoy" maybe three tracks on the record but not enough that I'd find myself putting them on a mix or sharing with friends. And, there are tracks that obviously even the fans don't think have held up as well as others.
One of those albums where I fully understand the inclusion in this list, but just isn't for me.
Love the beats he contributes but hate the words. Didn’t love this album nearly as much as I did when it came out and was an angsty teenager
Not my thing
This is musically solid—great beats. Lyrically, this is not for me. WTF
This record turned me off of hip hop for the until my 20s. The issues I had then still exists. I am just lucky I was able find more palatable rap. 2 stars because I recognize it's value.
Ratings are a reflection of my personal tastes. I don't care for this genre.
The only thing that stands the test of time is the beat (which is to be expected from a dr dre produced song)
Dig the beats, don't dig the foul language or a lot of the subject matter. Understand it's part of the art but it's tough to listen to at times and somewhat distracting IMHO. Glad I finally got to hear such an album as revered as "The Chronic" outside of the radio hits. I especially liked "Lil' Ghetto Boy" and the twist done on the theme song to "$10,000 Pyramid" with "The $20 Sack Pyramid." For those that don't mind the language or subjects, it's easy to see why this album was so lit at the time of its release. But I doubt that I'll personally listen to "The Chronic" again.
Everybody Hates Chris vibes

Stabiler ursprünglicher Rapp.
An awful lot of "n" word and misogyny. Not really catchy enough for me.
2.5
I mean it’s a classic, but uhh the misogynistic lyrics make me do a little head turn. The humor is there though.
The beats go hard but the rapping is dog meat. Snoop is also highly overrated as a rapper.
Obviously influential, but I didn't enjoy it.
Well, that was surprisingly shit.

It was ok. I dug a few of the first songs with Snoop DOGG. The rest was to gangster rap bs for me.
