Zbog ovog albuma postoji pink guy verzija bitches aint shit i zato ima zvezdicu preko
I can't support Dr Dre, even if this is a good album.
Too many n words
Influential? No doubt. Good? Ehhhhh... and I say this as a Dre fan. Listening to it critically in 2023, this isn't really a good album. There's very little Dre, all the tracks are about the same thing (that's kinda just gangster rap though) and like big dicks or whatever. The production does all the heavy lifting on this album. It still sounds great and reminds me of the golden era of hip hop.
unsurprisingly racist surprisingly homosexual deez nutz
Nah irgendwie nicht so
Good tracks, just needs to get rid of like 20 minutes. A lot of the same style that I got tired of after an hour. Will I listen to again: 20%
I acknowledge the influence this album had on culture. I acknowledge its excellent production values. I can't get past the bravado swagger to get to the social commentary.
old school, west coast rap. feels very dated though. I can appreciate what this album means to the genre but also not love it myself.
I am not the target demographic for this. Beats were solid, if a bit outdated. Lyrics...let's not talk about them. A few neat tracks here and there, which I've saved to my library.
Nokkur góð lög en mörg sökkuð. Gott sound, beatsin eru feit og klassikerinn Nothing but a G thang er ennþá viðeigandi í dag.
Didn't age well in my opinion
3 for nostalgia and the beats...1 for the lyrics that aged like milk....meet you at 2
Rap is not my style.
I understand the significance of this album, or at least to a degree, but it's not really my jam.
I liked the production, and I did like a couple of tracks( lil ghetto boy, nigga with a gun) but overall really not my thing…
gta sa xd
Dre and Easy E should have just fucked and got it over with when they had the chance.

Not really my style of music. I can appreciate it's well produced and clever at times, but generally I'm not a fan.
Good enough but I got sick of it by the end so maybe too long. I found the songs to be a bit samey but I'm not really fan of this era of rap so that's kind of to be expected to the untrained ear.
I'm a fan of rap, I really am. I just can't get over how pointless the lyrics are.
En kiistä musiikin tarttuvuutta saati iskevyyttä, mutta kuinka monella eri tavalla jaksan kuunnella, miten hän ampuu jonkun nuoren kaverin kuoliaaksi ja tunkee kyrpänsä tämän tyttöystävän suuhun?
Album 176 of 1001 Dr. Dre - The Chronic Rating : 2 / 5 We like what we like. This is a piece of shit. I'm not that much into shit unless you're saying 'this is some pretty good shit'. Ironically, "Chronic" is another word to describe the same thing...so in a way, the title of this album describes itself quite efficiently. Maybe "schwag" or "dirt weed" would be a more appropriate title.
I can see this being 100% a hit in the early 90s when it was released, but it just isn’t for me. Not a fan of the content of the songs and Snoop Dogg definitely outshines Dr. Dre on this record. Reading the back story behind this album was interesting, however.
Damn nigga or is that damn mutha fuckin Nigga? Dreadfull self indulgent lyrics which shows the double standards in our society. Musically reasonably good for a rap or hip hop (don't know the difference and don't really give a mutha fucking shite). Due to having something about it and it's influence on the rest of the effluence that followed it, I'll give it a low 2.
As a middle aged white suburban dad, I felt a little uncomfortable listening to this. I tend to lean towards heavier punk music. Having said that, powerful lyrics and great rhythm. I found myself nodding my head and tapping my feet to it as I sat on the train and walked to work.
I know it’s massively influential and all that but, honestly, I found this a bit of a slog. I prefer other artists from this stable E.g. Eminen, Snoop, Mary J Blige. And it really hasn’t aged well - I find the language jarring with all the ‘Bitches’, ‘Niggaz’ and ‘MFs’. Single handedly responsible for middle class suburban Scottish guys wandering about thing they are boys in the hood. Oh dear
Dr. Dre is undoubtedly influential in the history of gangsta rap, as is this album, but nowadays it feels dated. Full of homophobia and misogyny, and only about three things: smoking weed, killing people, and fucking.
Even back then I wasn’t a fan of Dre, although I can see his work as being important and an influence on later artists
Ah yes, the rap I am familiar with. I can see where Eminem's early rap albums got their flavor from, they were produced by Dr. Dre. It's quite nice to hear Snoop Dogg in his heyday. The lyrics, however, have aged like milk. Also found the source of DEEZ NUUTS comments on Reddit lol
Was je mond eens jongeman!!!
Another artist for whom i'm more familiar with their later work. I expected to enjoy this but it felt samey, and the lyrics are pretty uninspiring: how good they are, how big their dicks are etc.
Favorite track: Fuck Wit Dre Day
This project has helped me better appreciate hip hop. Nonetheless, I knew right from the intro that this one is beyond my ability to enjoy. I'm sure my offense and distaste is what he actually wants. If people like me (total whitebread middle aged female) don't hate the album then what is he even doing? I made it through the whole thing and found no redeeming value.
Better than the majority of rap I've heard. Almost gave this 3 stars, but rounding down for the super annoying skits and for the lyrics.
Usual thing - I don’t like aggressive sweary gangsta rap. Music is quite good, well sampled and produced.
Good to just listen to in the background but the lyrics have not aged well and there’s way too much of the n word.
mid tbh, not for me at all, only good song was the 2nd to last one. and even that one was barely decent. album truly doesnt deserve the hype, not my sound i guess. idrk. bitches aint shit or smtn, snoop features were kinda mid too, mentioned the label too many times, like over 40+ times. the end.
This album gets 2 stars just for "Nuthin' but a G Thang" as it is nostalgia plus.
The music is cool. But the lyrics are rubbish. And the music belongs to someone else anyway.
The beats and production are great but it’s too hard to look past the lyrics. 2
All the gun related violence and misogyny is really hard for me to hear. The beats are cool but I don’t understand why this is a Dr Dre record and not at least Dr Dre AND snoop. Nothing about it was catchy.
Meh
Boy I sure am tired of hearing about AKs. Some of the beats are catchy.
I'm not a big fan of the G-Funk sound.
Loads of memories of listening to this as a teenage boy in the early 90s. It is part responsible for my love of Parliament / Funkadelic, but doesn't really stand up. The homophobia, misogyny and shock for shock sake reveal much more turgid lyrics than I remember...snoop brings it up and you left questioning Dre's lyrical ability. The tracks though and use of funk samples remains pretty great.
overrated.
Not horrible, but pretty close to un-listenable at times. Too many muther fuckin', bitches, Niggas, etc... Standouts: Nothin' But a "G" Thang 2.5
eh, only okay in my opinions
Not a huge fan of this.
I dunno, didn't like this as much as I was expecting. The beats are really good but Dre's rhymes are meh. Skits are boring and the whole album drags a bit. As a time document on where hip hop was heading it's good but it kinda feels like an N.W.A album without the other members. Extra points for Snoop. Looking forward to 2001. 2.5 starts maybe?
It’s dated at this point
Didn't age as well as I was expecting
I can't remember where I heard it from but they said one of the least interesting things for musicians to write about is the music industry. This album has a bunch of that and it's completely uninteresting. Also hasn't aged that well. 2.5/5
This served it's role as background noise very well. No shade, just not my genre. 'Deeez Nuuuts' carried, and it's not even good.
Yeah I can't get into any of this stuff. This genre does nothing for my soul except make me want to commit violence in the streets. Heck I might go out and buy a glock for funzies after getting this, Straight Outta Compton, and The Marshall Mathers LP back to back to back.
2001 is an all time favorite of mine and was literally the only music I listened to in 7th grade. When I first listened to this one years ago, I was so excited because it was 2001’s predecessor but it really let me down. Therefore, I didn’t expect to like this very much, and it’s bordering on 1 territory. The crazy thing is that I wouldn’t hesitate to give its sequel a 5 and it only came out 7 years later.
West Coast alright. Leukste nummer: Lil' Ghetto Boy "The $20 Sack Pyramid" is een goede skit.
Eh, not really for me. The skits on these albums always put me way off too.
Some of the melodies gave light relief to the uninspired lyrics. Not for me 2*
The odd good song but mostly the usual misogynistic stuff...
Feels dated now, and Snoop does all the heavy lifting.
This is nowhere near as good as his second album 2001. I don't think it ages particularly well. I can understand the cultural significance of this album but apart from starting Snoop Dogg's career there wasn't much I liked on this album.
As I said in the Kendrick review, I don't like gangsta rap and this is pretty much what I was referring to. I know this is considered hugely influential and is highly thought of but doesn't do much for me....We probably have this to thank in part for the popularity of gangsta rap in the 90s, and artists like the game and 50 cent, which I'm really not a fan of. I can't deny that the beats on some of this are good.... but it's misogyny, gang violence, and ensuring we know how hard he is..... it doesn't do anything for me. There are more interesting things to rap about. Ain't nothing but a g thang is a good track tbf. Snoop is probably the highlight throughout the album and the reason it isn't getting a 1
The beats are so good but I just have a really hard time listening to the n word so many times. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Dre for his contributions to music and his collaborations, they can’t be ignored.
Ok
I like old school hip hop but I’m not really in to gangster rap. I think I’d probably have given this 3 stars but will knock 1 off for not allowing it on Spotify.

2/15, 13%
The songs just kept going on and on and on. He lost me during "The $20 Sack Pyramid" where we were literally just listening to a game show??
I can't help feeling that a lot about this album didn't age well? SO MANY lines I'd call corny today if they came from any rapper popular today, and the misogyny/homophobia that was probably unremarkable at the time is just eye-rolling to listen to today. Plus, I just kept waiting for it to go somewhere or say something interesting, but I feel like I couldn't pick most of these songs out in a lineup. Also, I feel like Dr. Dre lowkey got overshadowed by Snoop Dogg on this??? I know Dre's more of a producer (and wow the beats and samples on The Chronic are FANTASTIC, by far the best part of the album) but I shouldn't walk away trying to remember some of Dre's lines on here. standout tracks: Let Me Ride, A N*gga Witta Gun, Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat I'd give it a 2.5, tbh. The Chronic was probably groundbreaking at the time but as someone who grew up on the music that built upon Dre's work here, I'm just underwhelmed.
2.5/5 - a few iconic songs, not great as a complete album
*Did not fully listen so come back to this* Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah it’s alright, very nice transition from track to track and just ever classic lyrics and sounds Favourite song: Track 3 - Let me ride
The usual. The subject matter is just not something I enjoy, but the beats and music are not bad.
Decent, I didn't like all of it but there are definitely some enjoyable bits
meh. snoop dogg is cool tho
Too aggressive, too much violence. I'm sure the message is important it's just not presented in a way that I can connect with.
There’s a whole generation of kids who don’t know Snoop Dogg was on trial for murder.
It's just a bunch of dudes posturing. Except for the one woman. I'm gonna say 2.5 though, cause if I didn't understand English I would have almost enjoyed it.
Despite my southern upbringing, I would like to think I’m not much of a prude. That being said, I find this LP hampered by a lack of maturity and especially a fixation on using bitch whenever possible (to the point where it interrupts some great flows for no reason). Other hip-hop greats like B.I.G. have shown how to do sex-obsessed tracks masterfully, so the juvenile showmanship here just seems lacking in taste.
I've tried to listen to this one objectively over the years but I just can't really get into it. I recognise it as a landmark in hip hop history and see its influence in the music that followed. It obviously has fantastic production and instrumentals. But I can't see past the homophobic, misogynistic, and often just plain immature lyrics all over this thing. Maybe if I had been around at the time or gotten into this when I was younger I would feel differently. Its hard to de-couple Dre and Snoop from the legions of terrible bling era wannabes who followed in their footsteps. If I want to listen to some hip hop from the early 90s, I always turn to something like TCQ, De La Soul, or Queen Latifah over something like this.
Veel Nigga & dicks, matig 2/5
Funky and cool but not 100% my thing
It's not bad, but it's not for me. The production is good
I did not entirely enjoy the album. The beats were probably the best part but even they had some flaws sometimes. The raps themselves weren't very clever lyrically from what I heard.
so many swears
Nothing hit home on this one
Rap isn't really my cup of tea, and definitely was a little weird listening to at work. Lyrics are dated and would not fly today
I've been confused between the rap and hip hop albums because I'm no expert or historically a fan that I am just ignorant and therefore can't really have a solid opinion. But as the albums have gone on I've really enjoyed certain ones, like NWA Ice Cube and Gang Starr so perhaps I am building up an opinion. Therefore I think I can say with confidence I didn't like this, I can't articulate why but I just didn't. It felt like a bit much..
-This album was sold as an NFT. L. -Was able to find a live version of "Nuthin' But a 'G' Thang" and it was fine -If you don't exist on Spotify, you don't exist, also NFT L
Not my thing
hate this type of lyrics.
Not for me.
Pretty disappointed by this. Turns out I'm not a big fan of 'G-funk' - or at least not a whole hour of it (the singles can stay). Shame, as I really like Dre's later production work for himself and Eminem etc. I also think his aggressive vocal style is more suited to that later sound than these more chilled out stoner vibes. It's lucky Snoop is around (a lot more than I realised), as his voice fits the music well and is a bit more more interesting to listen to. I've seen Straight Outta Compton now though so at least I understand all the Jerry Heller and Eazy E disses... Clearly an influential album, but it's a 2.5 rating from me.
Most of this isn't on Spotify anymore, but I listened to what I could. After getting Ice Cube the previous day, the contrast for me is stark. As much as I loved that, this just leaves me cold. Never been a Snoop fan, or a Dre fan particularly. I get what he does and that it is good, it's just not for me. A few decent tracks here but I find I'm appreciating them rather than enjoying them, it's just literally not for me.
Já, skárra en margt úr þessum geira á þessum tíma. Ekki minn tebolli samt.
Gut, aber einfach nichts, was mich besonders abholt
Didn't really enjoy this. It was listenable but not enjoyable. Snoop Dogg definitely carried the album in my opinion.
3/10. Put off listening to this for over 2 months because it wasn't on Spotify. Can't say I regret putting it off, though there were bits that sounded kinda cool
2/5 not my cup of tea
Well I'm glad that's over. This will be the fifth time that I've mentioned Natual Born Killers, maybe that soundtrack should have been on this list, but either way The Day The Niggaz Took Over has long been a favourite of mine but the rest of this album is not for me. Snoop Dogg is certainly a star on this album.
I enjoyed this more when I was 16. Misogynistic, and bull shit male bravado prevails. No thanks.
I like the Funkadelic synth lines but could do without the F-bombs.
As much a Snoop Dogg album as a Dre album. Decent enough but falls short of Ice Cube's debut. The relentless misogyny and "look-at-my-big-dick" lyrics are regrettable and mar an otherwise decent effort.
Eh, this was 70% clown rap and I was wearing insufficiently floppy shoes. 🤡 Managed to get through the whole album, but it felt like a struggle. I definitely prefer East coast gansta rap, it seems - find that more tolerable on the whole. Fave track - "The Day The Niggaz Took Over" - sounded very Cypress Hill...
Nigger rap, don't really like it
Dont like rap
I love the G-funk genre but not this album. It has moments but is lyrically appalling. Main issue for me is that there isn't a single song on this that I'd want to add to a playlist.
While I can respect the occasional reference to racial history, The Chronic seems a little too gangster in personality when met with over-cleansed ears.
Weirdly easy to work to. Possibly because of the rhythm behind it - it's easy to have it as background music. Possibly not what Dr Dre intended.
Weird. This felt more dated to me than several of the other hip hop records we've listened to that are technically older than this. Not sure why that is - maybe that high pitch synth thing? The lyrics? Both? And why is it that there's such a need in hip hop to make these records so damn long? Get off my lawn, please. Anyway, what I really want to write about is how this album completely transformed my suburban southern high school upon release. I mean, it was insane. Between this and Snoop's first record there was this, seemingly overnight, shift where about 80% of the whitest of white dudes at my school somehow convinced themselves they were gangstas. The clothes. Cars. Posture. Interest in marijuana. All of it completely changed. And then I remember going to Myrtle Beach and seeing some white kid who couldn't have been older than 12 rocking a Philly's blunt tee. Shit was out of hand. Funny, too, how so often grunge and alternative music gets thrown out there as the defining cultural moment of the 90s, when really - that bit only lasted like three years. By '94, everybody who was popular had moved on to West Coast rap and the alternative radio stations were playing Seven Mary Three and Sponge. And, look, I'd rather listen to the Chronic than Seven Mary Three, so it's hard to even blame folks.
Had higher hopes for this but the Chronic fell flat. One dimensional lyrics that push an image but lack much creativity or cohesive message. Solid beats and occasional samples but little depth in the raps or skits.
Bettered by far better US east-coast hip-hop
Ain’t nothin’ like a me thing.
meh
Really really disapointed in this one. Enjoyes NWS and Ice Cube first albums, but this did not hit it with me.
Chronically turd. Snoop doggy dog eats more lamb chops than SHACK.
Very mixed on this one- I spent the listening time wrestling between getting very little enjoyment out of it and trying to contextualise it within hip-hop, and what it must have meant for the genre in 1992. I'm not going to try and fault Dre's production or sampling- it is, of course, expertly done. The beats are straightforward and swaggering, the mix sounds glorious on headphones, and the choice of samples gives the record a very congruous feel. Parliament-Funkadelic are all over this record, having a strong bearing on the beginning of G-funk's commercial peak. This is perfectly encapsulated in "Nuthin' but a "G" Thang", which showcases a catchy hook throughout and some really nice sampled backing vocals in the outro. It's where the sound of the record first clicked into place for me, and an obvious choice for lead single. "N**** With A Gun" and "Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat" are my other highlights musically- both strong hooks and really crisp, simple bass parts. “The Roach” (almost) ended the album on a high, melodic note with a “P-Funk” sample vamp. So what didn't work for me? Most obviously the lyrics: bar a couple of solid social commentaries, it's track after track of either violent, sexist outbursts or standard diss-tracks against the other members of NWA. The wordplay or rhymes didn't hit me as much of some of the other hip-hop albums I've already heard on this list, and the humour felt weak and outdated. “The Doctor’s Office" skit, complete with simulated sex scene at the end, really made me cringe, and "bitches ain't shit but hoes and tricks" hardly felt like a closing statement for the ages. I've found the length to be a bit of a challenge with several hip-hop albums, and this was no exception. Several tracks towards the end (“High Powered”, ”Stranded on Death Row") just felt a bit forgettable- I can't recall them now after a few listens. “The Chronic” and the gangsta-celebrating world it inhabits isn’t for me, however much I appreciate its impact. Still, at the moment I'm more partial to the bombastic sounds of hip-hop’s golden-age or its moodier, jazzier inflections.
Some ok beats and basslines. Lyrics are ok though music didn't really speak to me at all
2/5 Too many F's and N's...
Hindsight is 20/20 liked it back in the day, not so much now.
Not a fan

Well the one thing the generator has taught me is that I don't like gansta rap
Album #210 Dr. Dre: The Chronic One of the first rap songs I ever heard was Bitches Ain’t Shit; it was introduced to me by a friend who just couldn’t stop singing it, as he thought it was so hysterical, so I went home and sought it out myself, and what can I say, I thought it was great. That being said, we were both 7 years old, and I can’t speak for my friend, but I think I was over-joking about women only being good for sucking dick by 11. That really sums up the album for me. I’m not elitist when it comes to music, but I really can’t see how self-respecting grown men put shit like this on and feel that it represents them. When you’ve got fools like the NFR podcast going around talking about this album’s lyricism like it’s fucking Blonde on Blonde, I guess I was expecting it to be half decent. But no, you literally have Snoop Dogg singing a ‘deez nuts’ prank call over a gospel and flute; I mean, how the fuck is this not a joke? Ok, so definitely don’t fuck with Dre, especially if you’re Eazy E, or else he’ll fucking kill you, man. He’ll do it; he’s from the streets and dangerous. Snoop will help too because he also loves seeing bodies hit the floor, but oh yeah, that murder trial was a load of bullshit, and they set him up. I think that was all covered in the first song, boys; probably didn’t need to elaborate for another hour. I came away from Doggystyle enjoying it for what it was, and acknowledging the camp of it all, but The Chronic seems to me like they are actually trying to be taken seriously as artists, while simultaneously also being feared, and they fail in both respects horribly. I actually liked Dre as a producer from what I’ve heard from him, but by the tenth track I started to see that his beats were incredibly repetitive and one-note. I really didn’t expect to dislike this album as much as I did, but honestly, outside of being stoned out of your mind, to the point that you can forget you’re an adult with a functioning brain, this album is pretty turgid. At least Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang is a fun track, which prevents it from being a complete flop. Sidenote, but I don’t think an album skit has ever made anyone laugh, and I can’t fathom why they are so popular in hip hop, especially when their albums tend to be bloated already. Best Songs: Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang, Let Me Ride, Fuck Wit Dre Day Worst Song: The $20 Sack Pyramid Score out of 10: 3
I wish I had an hour and 6 minutes of my life to know if Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg smoke weed, kill people, and/or fuck women. I really wished they expressed these actions in 4-5 minutes songs with little beat change. How’s this a classic?
Total rejection of the pursuit of enlightenment. I don't want to live in a world where redemption is scoffed at. At the risk of sounding disrespectful or old or even racist—this question is genuine—what would you do if your twelve-year-old son came home from school one day and said, "I've been really digging this album called The Chronic"?
Album #113: The Chronic - Dr. Dre (DNF) Genre (W): West coast hip hop, gangsta rap, G-funk Singles: Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang, Dre Day, Let Me Ride I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: I had to DNF this album. The production and beats were good, but the lyrics ruined the entire album for me, even for the songs I found somewhat enjoyable, I despised the lyricism. Lots of misogyny, violence, and graphic sexual stuff. Disgusting. Favorite songs: DNF.
Not my thing at all. If I talked that way, I would have all kinds of problems. That’s the wonderful thing about music…it opens the window for self expression that may not have any other method for self expression. I didn’t listen to all of the cuts…made about halfway through.
Still not my thing.
HELL TO THE NAW NAW NAW!!! Already knew this was a NOPE even before I saw the Snoop reference on so many tracks.
It's the misogyny. Hard pass.
Rap stuff
Shit.
Interesting beats but, nope
Gangster Rap is not for me. It does make me wonder about the culture and lifestyles that spawned it.
Misogynistic lyrics from a woman beater, shocking.
Noise pollution
Fem sekunders lyssning. Omöjligt.
Nope
Leaving the lyrics aside, it has 2 or 3 songs that are ok. Overall, the album is still insufferable. 2/10
Non merci.
Was für ein Sch... Jedes zweite Wort Motherfucker, Nigga oder Fuck. Gibt es noch eine andere Botschaft?
Straight up freakin mid track it was wild. Certainly memorable. Akin to that time you get up on stage in front of the school ready to drop some beats in the talent show before your friend pants you cause he was payed 3 bucks and a lollipop to do it. Drink: water sweetened with Cotten candy and your dad’s cough syrup. Rating: 2.35/10
i've never understood the love for gangster hiphop. noting that i didn't finish listening to the entire album, i guess it was a lil catchier than the other hiphop albums i've heard so far? not my style though. bye byeee women beater!!!
Wtf?!
Lots of foul language.
My opinion of this is the same as every other time I've been generated a gangster rap album. I think the beats are okay (I will say I've heard better from other albums on here) and I don't like the vulgarity and skits. Also, for a Dr. Dre album, there's significantly less Dr. Dre than there are other guests, especially Snoop Dogg.
Yeah it's hip-hop and it's the kind I really cannot stand.
i genuinely can’t listen to this my ears are being attacked with so much absurd profanity and lewdity (?)… i love snoop’s voice and dre’s smooth too but for these reasons, im out.
Less than Zero
Je n’ai pas aimé le son
3/10 Pfft. We done?
Sure maybe this album was important at the time, maybe it was played an important role in modern hip-hop and rap but man, it is bad. The lyrics aren’t great and have aged so poorly, the beats are okay and Snoops features are good but there are definitely better Dr Dre albums.
I can't say that I'm a fan. The violent fantasies presented in these tracks are exhausting to listen to, and not even Snoop Dogg's incredible charisma can sustain my interest through an hour of this album. Dr. Dre's performance here is drowned out by the other artists he features. I'm also so far removed from the culture that this album existed in that the diss tracks don't impress me, since I have no idea who they are talking about. Favorite track: "Stranded on Death Row"
bad.
I am hyper specific about the rap I like. This was the opposite of what rap I end up liking.
Rap, 1992 -> 1
This is terrible.
Gangsta rap is the original Manosphere: media savvy guys playing misogynistic characters, and young white boys from the suburbs eating it up.
The is absolutely nothing 1990's Dr.Dre adds to the lexicon of music ... Hos, his balls, and fucking Snoop Dog.
Don't like the words
I'm not opposed to swearing and coarse language. Hell, I swear daily, but holy crap the language being used within the first 10 minutes was making me sick. This is nothing but absolute garbage. 🤮
As my Gran used to say. Swearing is not big, its not clever and its not funny. By all means pepper your songs with swearing, but when it gets to the point that most your words are that, they lose any impact whatsoever. I felt from beginning to end that this was just dreadful. And what he did to Parliament's P-Funk was a war crime. Most of all, this album was soulless.
Average middle school hallway experience
Gave up after 5 songs, I'm not gonna "give it a chance" if every song sounds the same and there's no variety or anything worthwhile at all within one third of the album duration. I don't owe Dr. Dre shit.
it was trash
Awful misogynistic crap
This is just not my vibe. I totally get that Dr. Dre is appreciated by others, but I can’t get on board with his music.
I don’t like it.
not my style, very repetitive
Can I give this zero ? I'm so not the target audience for this . I even listened to it in a residential area and I still didn't get it .
Not the target audience but this is really boring. Like listening to the results of some stoned yr9 kids fucking around in the music room at lunchtime. Flashes of Dre's production skills and Snoop livens it up at times but overall pretty shit.
Kill it with fire
Not my style of music with too much swearing and the word nigger
рэп c'est кал
I can't get over the bravado and misogyny. I can hear music that I would like to listen to, but it's not made for me
Too many m'fers and n words for me.
He really hates women huh.
Misogynistic
Hasn't aged well, and probably wasn't that great when it came out either. He can't rap or sing and the album really suffers from the degrading language he uses. It feels unnecessary and uncouth
No más hip-hop o similar. Dónde están Wilco, Grateful Dead.....
Just awful
Ew. 1.5/5
Ei mun kuppi teetä. Varmaan genressään hyvä mut mua vaan tökkii
When I heard this I thought it was from the 80's. How is this from 1992? It sounds dated even for the 90's.
Couldn’t relate to it , wasn’t a fan of the lyrics I can see why it’s popular to certain. Subcultures but wasn’t a fan
Some of the sampling and arranging is groovy and gets your head boppinf that's undeniable. Although it gets pretty repetitive, pretty quickly, and there's not a lot of variation in the musical arrangements, so for that reason, it doesn't really hook me. i haven't read the lyrics sheet yet but if i do i think i'll be disappointed because it sounds like there's a lot of negative topics being discussed in there.. I'm totally out of this world. Probably an album I'd have loved as a bong smoking teenager but it's kind of a parody now to me. When you put this alongside something like the Beastie Boys, it's just childish and surface level elevator music. Sorry. Gangsta, ni--er-, fuck, shit blah blah blah. Is this on this list as an example of how music can be made by anyone, if so it covers the lower end of the spectrum without a doubt.
Ulidelig.
Sure, the beats are fun, but I can’t get behind it. 1
It's not terrible, but it's not my thing at all
This album is... oh, well, at least I got to the last song. Because it's the most boring thing I've ever listened to. And probably the worst thing too. I mean, it's so so repetitive and insipid! I may not understand hip-hop (of course, it's a genre I don't like at all), but this album is just so horrible... And, what did I get from this? Really, is there something the least interesting on this album or is it just some uninspired music? Because I'm confused by how bad it is.
Could not listen
Tedious!
Why Hip-Hop Sucks In '92 It’s the money!
Heavy weather is right!
I tried to like it, I found it too violent (in both the sound and the lyrics) and did not like the derogatory messaging about women. Did not finish
Nopenopenopenopenopenopenope. Nope. 1/5
I knew Dr. Dre as Eminem's producer, but like all producers, he also wanted to be a good musician and therefore released something under his own name at some point. To cut to the chase: he would have been better off not doing that. It's not for nothing that Dre is known for his beats, but not for his lyrics or his “singing.” Yes, I realize that in the early 90s there was a market for lyrics on the level of pubescent teenagers—but I won't go into that further. What you could expect even back then, however, was a somewhat finished album with some noteworthy output besides the rhythm tracks. What we have here, however, is 62 minutes of backing tracks with, for some inexplicable reason, unedited vulgar conversations between some rather immature guys. This would be my starting point for a list of 1001 albums to avoid until you die.
The sound is very thời đó, khá chill không gang gang như nhạc rap bây giờ =))) Lyrics khá… nhưng melody upbeat, khá pop(?) Why is there a song named “deez nutz”? The songs started having some depth, but then the vulgar and problematic language ruins it. “Let Me Ride” 5/5 😺 “The $20 Sack Pyramid” is questionable af, are they fcking? Is it rap? Idk lmao 0/5 The lyrics can be misogynistic af tho, overall its so-so because it requires cultural knowledge, and I aint from the hood 😔
Should be rereleased as The Chronic {fatigue} because I am SICK and TIRED of all the misogyny in 90s rap. I don't want to hear any more about your dick, or how you belittle women, or the glorification of violence, drugs and money. Obviously this music is of its time, and it was deeply encouraged by the music industry and the audience in the 90s - but I just don't want to listen to this kind of music anymore. Not trying to be woke, just had enough.
I usually enjoy the sound of a woman screaming in pleasure, but imagining Dre fucking anyone made me vom. My ears are still bleeding.
non ci provo neanche
Whilst working through this list over thst 18 months, sometimes we have to make our penance. Listening to this load of shit has hopefully brought me a lot of credits!
Yeah I hated this. This is pretty much everything about rap that I hate and struggled to get through. They say mother fucker about every 3 words, half the album is about his cock and everything else just isn’t for me
Toxic and angry
Imma be honest, not my type of genre. There was one song i recognized- the intro. Idk if I'll listen to all of the album, prolly not. 🤷 Yeah...idk not for me. 2/5? Maybe less lol (Nenoklausijos vis tho, kadas 3 dziesmas tikai)
Everything kind of sounds the same to me
Not for me
Dre beat Drew Wallace. Dre gets no stars.
beeaatch
Too hard
Zero stars
Who is the man…….?
Beyond the repetitious beats, the boring recurrence of specific words, the pounding on the same few ideas of pantomime violence and sexism, the thing that is truly chronic about The Chronic is its shallow self-referencing. Plenty of record labels have made mythic brands of themselves, but Deathrow is mentioned so frequently that the whole record feels like an informercial for itself. There is nothing here other than the fact that the record exists and its existence is exhausting. 1 ‘You never been on a ride like this befo' (One of the raps on this album) Such ‘flow’. Such ‘beats’. And from ‘The Streets’. Guns being fired and ‘bitches’ castigated over a few seconds of music on a loop. One hears such wonders and what else can one say? It can only be a Rap album by someone. 1/5
this sucks
OK, I may not be the target audience but I still don't understand how 'music' has sunk this low.
No.
I had low expectations before starting to listen and the album failed to meet them. The only redeeming "quality" is that it does eventually end.
Not a single redeeming thing.
Not my kind of music.
The album is about one hour too long. "Nigga" and "Fuck" as well as other derogatory terms are used as often as the letter E. Reminds me why I don't like Death Row Records and Rap as a whole. 75% of album was Snoop Dogg.
Don’t like gangsta rap
got through 6 tracks, dont know how. What a load of bilge. Lived up to the title, chronic indeed.
Yeah, no.
It is a classic. But I can't stand this type of vulgar, aggressive, ultra-macho posturing. What's the point? Key tracks: Nuthin' but a "G" Thang
Not my thing
Ah Yes, the beginning of the fall of the American Suburb. I remember when some of the stores in our popular suburban mall started playing this album. That mall is now shuttered because the culture shifted and it became unsafe. Thanks Dre!
What a load of shite. Only made it to track 2, what a load of vulgar nonsense.
The obligatory Niggas, Mutha fuckers and bietchas. Definitely not my thing
Yet another entry in the electronica and hip hop music hellscape that is chronically over-represented on this list. No thank you 365/24/7.
I can live without it. F this and F that. It gets old.
1.5
Just name calling! It's the worst of the rap albums I have heard so far along with Eminem
I only had 4 songs available on youtube and well I don't like it at all.
Beats are fun, but the lyrics and vocals are truly awful. Got this too early in my list and had to come back and change my rating to a 1. It is infinitely worse than most other albums on this list
Faux alpha male bullshit.
I think this album should be renamed "The Diabolic". Which sort of rhymes with Chronic.
I’m glad I have a bad ear for lyrics, but I still caught more than I cared to. This was awful.
Just not my type of music :)
Chronic!
Juvenile poser b.s. What a waste of good beats.
Why anyone would want or need to listen to this before they die, is beyond me. Terrible.
Really not my thing
-1 for every "nigga" within first minute of the record
This one wasn't for me. There's not a lot of music that I just, flat out, don't enjoy and gangster rap, for the most part, is one of them. The only redeemable quality for this album was some of Snoop's lines, but the beats weren't there and every time Dre spoke I wanted to shut it off.
Nope!
this is not for me.. or women in general I think
I would’ve eaten way more apples if i knew this was the Dr 😭😭😭 What’s his PhD in? Making music that aged poorly and compensating for self-confidence issues by talking about how big his penis is in every song? Fuck you and your shitty headphones
Not my jam.
Did not like at all.
----'
This is exactly the reason that I don't listen to (c)rap.
Nope
sucks nigga
As one Chicago critic wrote “superficial, unrefined entertainment, …. Dre combines street potency with thuggish stupidity in equal measure." Couldn’t say it any better. Hard pass.
I think I just going to copy my review of Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg from a few days ago because it’s still applicable here: I really dig the beats and overall production on this album, but once again, I just can’t stand the rapping or the lyrics. It’s just standard gangsta rap cliches; drugs, bitches, mfers, n***as, and blatant misogyny. Maybe I’m just grumpy because I’m on a string of bad albums and this is the fourth hip-hop album I’ve had in a week. Ok, the flute solo on Lil Ghetto Boy was pretty sweet. Fucking hell, I almost shut it off during the Doctor’s Office.
Not good. Too much of Snoop spelling his name; I'm glad he can, we all can and he doesn't need to prove he can. Several stupid skits or things that could be classified as skits, like pretty much every rap album I've heard. I'll never return to this and wish I never heard it to begin with. 1/5
Old
really horrible
This should have an rating option of less than one. Can't stand this self absorbed macho sexist violence worshipping stuff.
Good rhythms...awful words
More tired hiphop braggadocio.
Just what I wanted today - another hip hop album full of misogyny, homophobia, glorification of violence, shitty electronic beats, and music stolen from other artists. I get that this is sort of a cultural cornerstone but that doesn't make it good. I think that makes the whole situation unfortunate. There are much better ways to promote African Americans and the amazing culture they share. We don't need Dr. Dre to tell everyone it's cool to assault women and kill people. I have to wonder if this music actually originated from an intention of just shock value. 0/5 but that's not an option.
Abysmal
Not my taste at all
An album that sounds like a call of duty lobby.
When the opening song actively drives me away, I can't appreciate the rest of it.
Yet another Hip-Hop / Rap album - why so many in this list? It just doesn't appeal to me.
This album has been sat in my in tray for nearly a month, like a tricky administrative form I don't quite have the mental stamina to work my way through. I think I can appreciate the beats here. The sounds, the rhythms. Let Me Ride is a great example of this. Or Stranded on Death Row. There is intricacy and feeling, and a lot of work has been put in to this. This album also helps open up for me a lot of 1990s culture and understand a bit more the music I was seeing but not really listening to as I grew up. But so many of the songs sort of blend into each other in a giant cacophony of rap noise. The skits are terrible. And the moral footprint is dubious. Fundamentally, do I ever want to hear any part of this album ever again? The answer is no, and so I can't give this album any higher than the lowest score possible.
Puh... Gangsta Rapper
AWFUL
I don't like when art is used to spread hate towards anyone. I've listened to this when I was younger, and less able to challenge certain views. But yeah, with older ears, the only enjoyable part of this album are the beats. The lyrics are trash, and haven't aged well at all.
Wasn't really my thing.
Not for me back in the day and it’s only got worse since then. Just sounds toxic.
The Chronic is the prime example of everything that I hate about rap music. It’s just a monotonous slog of the most typical gangster rap to exist; nothing but rapping about sex and your dick. There’s not really a message, outside of maybe The Day The N****s Took Over (obviously about the LA Riots given the year this was released), but even then it feels shallow as fuck. Honestly, Rage Against the Machine did it better with Killing In The Name of, and a good chunk of that song is literally repeating “Fuck You, I won’t do what you tell me”. Outside of that, nothing but rapping about violence and sex and whatever without really a point. To be honest, it’s not really the lyrical content that gets to me, it’s just not anything special given it’s reputation. Outside of pretty being Snoop Dogg’s platform to his own success, what the fuck about this album makes it iconic? The production’s nice, I guess, but what else? The amount of circle-jerking to Death Row? The terrible skits? (I was going to be a little generous with this album, but after The $20 Sack Pyramid, my generosity took a holiday) I figured maybe a one star might be too harsh and thought at least a two, but then I realized… I don’t want to listen to anything from this album again. There are no songs that I can take that I really enjoyed. Maybe Little Ghetto Boy, and I remember hearing Nuthin’ But A “G”Thang, but like, I’m not crazy for them. There’s much better rap out there that made as much as an impact that are miles better than this. Hopefully some that don’t use the n word like a crutch. Favorite track I guess: Lil’ Ghetto Boy Other hits I guess: Nuthin’ But A “G” Thang
I am not a fan of swaggering, misogyny, or glorifying violence. Three songs on the album did not include those noxious themes. They were okay to hear, but musically forgettable and I wouldn’t ever listen to them again.
Another one from the gangsta rap genre, with all the customary ick, but at least it has the pervasive presence of Snoop as a bright spot.
Hip-hop, 30eme album => 1/5
Didn't listen beyond a few minutes.
I just don’t get this genre still. Not a fan.
