At teams quite creative, but generally quite grating and meandering. Doing something difficult with a guitar, or something that is not easily emulated, does not mean that it is good or elegant.

Music is fine, but ruined by bad vocals and vocal mastering. If you are going to commit to punk style raw vocals, the music has to be equally shitty for it to work. Highlight track: 2

Seems like they are good for their genre but not a fan of this style of music. Hard to judge impartially but I didn't like it.

This album starts off like a tornado and smacks you in the chops. It’s loud and brash and in your face. It’s thrashy and punky and a little bit screamy. Normally this combination would induce an excited curiosity from myself and these tracks did just that...but that was all. I just can’t find anything worthwhile or standoutish. The songs speed along happily enough, but leave you feeling unsatisfied and with an empty void. 2 Stars!

Very punk, very cool, emo dudes

Hardcore noise rock is not for me. This was just tiring. Every song sounded the same and, invariably, lasted a minute or two longer than it needed to.

I've had some low points during the last 3+ years of listening to albums via this site, but this rivals The Cramps album as the single worst listening experience of my life. I heard a dying fox years ago, it had been hit by a car and was slowly dying in the road. It couldn't move and there was blood everywhere. That was better than every track on this album!

1.4/5 I unfortunately I didn't really like this album. It seems a lot of reviewers said that it's a struggle at first but once it clicks, it clicks. I wish I had time to keep listening to this album but I don't, but maybe in the future I'll give this the time it needs.

Man, remember when music deemed good (i.e. this list) was the music that sounded good? What happened, Dimery? The minimalist album art, mention of the genre "post-hardcore", and low streaming numbers do not inspire much hope in the listener. If Yank Crime ends up being good, it'll be a pleasant surprise, and one should still believe that it absolutely does not belong on such a high-calibre list. Unfortunately, though Drive Like Jehu gives us a surprise, it's far from pleasant. As another user beautifully described it: " I don't know what to say other than this sucked hugely. Just noise and screaming from the get-go... There is no reason this made anyone's top 1001 other than shock value. This is crap and sounds like an album they gave away at their show where they played in front of 35 people on a Tuesday night. Every song sounds essentially the same, 100 mph and screaming nonsensical lyrics over and over." Here Come the Rome Plows starts off with an experimental approach to rock, placing what could be a pretty good idea for a rhythm behind a thick layer of noise that can't quite decide on a key centre. The tale of how not to compose or record music if you want anybody to enjoy it. It's extremely understandable that this is by far the most popular track on the album (sitting at 2.1 million streams on Spotify), because most people probably listened to it for a minute or two before giving up on the whole record. Do You Compute is definitely an improvement – at least we get thrown a guitar melody that sounds like it could've been devised by a legitimate musician. Nice guitar riff (though it gets old fast) and some cool nods to emo rock with the vocals, particularly in the middle section, but the rest of the song is deliberately bad. They aren't even trying to hide it. And all these 5-star reviewers are falling for the lie. Golden Brown experiments with a lighter, more punky mood that, for the most part, works. It still leaves a lot to be desired in terms of melody, hooks, any memorable parts, any form of album progression (all songs have very similar energy so far). Luau doesn't change that, and despite the many reviews suggesting this one'll change your life, my life feels pretty darn static right now listening to this 9-minute slog. At least it respects the rule of long songs: that is, switch it up, dang it. Section 2, beginning about halfway through, removes the dense, overbearing texture of the distorted rhythm guitar, replacing it with a sort of improvisational vocals-and-drums section that ends up being the most listenable stretch of music on the album thus far. The guitar solo starts off decently but verges off into noise rock, and we're just a little too late into the 90s for that genre to be considered revolutionary. I didn't realise just how horrifically bad the vocals were until I was handed a slightly better rendition of them in Super Unison. Unfortunately the rest of the instruments fail to deliver on anything memorable – not even one single melodic idea I can recite to my friends to convince them this band is worth a single second of their time. Such is Yank Crime, I suppose. New Intro then, bizarrely, squeaks its way into the upper tier of this album for being surprisingly passable as a sort of ambient piece. Lacking those vocals, it turns out, is pretty helpful for this band. New Math, Human Interest, and (later) Hand over Fist are pretty uninteresting overall – reminiscent of some grunge stuff from earlier in the decade, but clearly lesser on harmonic and melodic grounds. (Cool outro to Hand over Fist, though.) Sinews starts promisingly with a series of gloomy-yet-chill guitar ideas, before exploding into atonal material typical of the rest of the album. New to the mix are some high-pitched synthetic whistles (à la Sheer Heart Attack, Queen, 1977), and they're annoying as heck. Dang it, Drive Like Jehu, don't give me hopes and dreams of good music if you're going to crush those dreams seven minutes later. The final song, Bullet Train to Vegas, easily makes my highlights list simply because it's the last, and shortest, track on the album. Also, it makes me think of Nirvana's Territorial Pissings and the Monkees' Last Train to Clarksville (both excellent songs). Easily 1 star, and it's not close at all. I would give it fewer if I could – to reflect my (lack of) willingness to listen to any more of this type of music, and also to counterbalance the shockingly numerous 3-, 4-, and 5-star reviews. Kept waiting for some lyrics……. Waiting……… waiting Waiting……..

Another one I’ve never heard of. By the sound of it, a weird entry. Loud yelling punk. Might be too early in the morning for this. Just a muddled loud obnoxious sound. Hate it early on. Why are the songs SO LONG. 7 minute angry rock jammer. Why. Some of the more straight forward punk songs are okay but it’s still just too noisy. It seems to grow into a sound that’s less annoying to me but it’s never something I really enjoy much. I don’t mind the sound of Luau, but it’s a song that overstays its welcome by a few minutes. This is going to be a 1. Not for me. There’s some flashes of interesting stuff over the course of the album but it’s all too long and overall don’t like the loudness of this sound. It’s muddled ugly guitars and an annoying yelling vocal style I don’t care for. In instances when there’s some interesting music, it doesn’t last long or it’s forgotten.

Absolutely not for me. Don’t even really know why but I did not enjoy at all. Might have to give it another go in case I was just in a bad mood :D

Awful noise, awful vocals

I’d never heard of them, and theirs is not a style of music I like. I couldn’t listen past the first few songs (and I skipped through each of those). Musically interesting, but another album ruined for me by screaming and yelling vocals. I don’t think I’ll like what I assume will be future hardcore, post punk albums either. But we shall see.

This was absolutely dire. It was too long. The mix was dreadful, making the vocal barely audible - which was probably a blessing as, when it was audible, it was terrible. The sheer amount of feedback startled my dog on more than one occasion. Awful.

They ruined some interesting musical ideas with whiny screaming over everything. It’s bad enough when this shit is 2 minutes long. But the fact that half of the songs are longer than 5 minutes makes this one an awful listen.

Drive Like Jehu Yank Crime 1* This is an album I should like, post punk, screamed vocals, right up my alley but the production/mixing of the album ruins it for me. The screamed vocals sound like they're coming from the next room. It's like they're trying to make a Fugazi album sound like shoegaze. This album has been disappointing me for 3 decades

Absolutely exhausting. Gave me a headache. I had heard enough noisy thrashy punk halfway through the first track, then the album continued for another hour. Also all the songs are MUCH too long, what business do they have being 7 or 9 minutes? Although to be fair they all blur into one so it's hard to tell where one finishes and the next begins. I am genuinely glad that some people like this though. I love Butthole Surfers, but most people hate them, so I understand.

A couple songs that I could take a 2:00 section to use as a Tony Hawk game soundtrack, but really didn’t click at all for me unfortunately.

Woof. Didn't think this was great. Maybe I was predisposed to thinking this would suck, since the note above says that the guitarist found fame with his band Rocket From The Crypt in later years. I had one of their albums earlier on this countdown and it was terrible, so I didn't expect much from this. What bothered me was that a lot of this was repetitive, both in the lyrics and the riffs. If either were good, this could have been tolerable, but neither were. Add in the fact that it was basically the lead singer yelling over a bunch of poorly constructed songs, this leads to where I thought it would, a 1-star album. Just to round this out, I would point people towards early Sponge records, such as Rotting Pinata or Wax Ecstatic which were released in the mid-90s like this record. Listen to the two back-to-back, and you will hear how a band (Sponge) can actually play fast / be loud but actually be melodic and create much better music. This, on the other hand, was abysmal.

Post hardcore is toch echt wel een genre waar ik niet heel erg bekend mee was en ben. Ga niet liegen; ik had even de hoop dat dit een hardcore album was a la Angerfist. Had ik een leuke afwisseling gevonden, maar helaas is post-hardcore in deze meer een snoei en snoeihard metal album. Mwah nee, post-hardcore is niet echt mijn genre. De nummers zijn opvallend lang, de zang is niet te verstaan en meer schreeuwend dan daadwerkelijk zang en de gitaar is standje oorpijn. Dat gecombineerd met ALLES oversturen, zorgt nou niet echt voor een prettige luisterervaring. Luau heeft na 8(!!!) minuten een heel stuk wat gewoon echt herrie is. Kan er niet echt iets anders van maken eerlijk gezegd. Super Unison heeft er voor gezorgd dat mn kat is weggerend met een halve minuut een nauwelijks hoorbare maar pijnlijke toon. Ik snap Post-hardcore echt niet man, is de herrie het idee erachter? Of gaat deze muziek meer om de emotie die je voelt? In dat geval dan is dit album top, ik haat het en voel me verschrikkelijk hierdoor. Nee dit album is dodelijk vermoeiend, blij dat het voorbij is. Albums zoals dit zorgen ervoor dat ik actief minder zin heb in muziek. Ik wist niet dat het kon maar op dagen zoals deze ben ik zo blij als mn album van de dag weer voorbij is en alleen daarom krijgt het van mij toch gewoon een 1. Ik twijfelde nog een beetje omdat er wel duidelijk een visie is en dit misschien het plan is, maar gezien mijn absolute lijdensweg kunnen ze m krijgen ook. Dit is absoluut een Yank Crime, maar betwijfel dat dit was wat ze bedoelden... FAVO:

Oh, I don't know if I just wasn't in the mood, or it was the album itself, but hoooooooly moly, was this a super annoying album to listen to. Overall, it was a pretty miserable experience, but it could be because I was listening to it while I was working, and it was quite busy, so maybe if you're in a peaceful environment, this would be a lot better, but definitely not more than 2 stars.

“Do You Compute” with 90 seconds of the same guitar riff. The drone at the beginning of “Super Unison” sounded like an Amber Alert got stuck playing. I wanted to like the emo vibes… but the vocals were lacking and the creative decisions just kept doing me wrong… This album was not for me. It was a slog to listen.

Laten we voorop stellen dat ik het alleen maar kan aanmoedigen om iets meer de alternative rock - en dan met name de punk - van de US in te duiken. Maar daarmee is bij 'Yank Crime' ook al het positiefs wel gezegd, want ik heb me geen seconde vermaakt. Deze afslag ná de hardcore route die punk bewandelde is mij te onbeduidend. 4/10

Screaming, check. Chainsaw guitars, check. Full on 100% rhythm section attack mode, check. One minute thirty songs. Absolute uncheck. If the Minutemen had spun their songs out to 7 minutes and DNOTD was 8 hours long it might be a bit like this. Hence one star, and one of my few DNF's

Definitely did not expect this kind of music for my first album. I don't typically listen to this genre, so I need to get used to it but I get it why people like this but I don't think this is made for me. I can't really tell what they are trying to convey in their music, there is not really a storyline in their songs. Maybe it's just them trying to show their instrumental skills which is very good though, but I miss a structure. It feels too messy for me. Listened to the first song fully, but couldn't make it much further throught the album. I tried to listen to the second and third one and I like the latter the best but I still don't like it enough to add it to my liked songs.

Atrocious. Tedious, yelpy screamo emo with ultra-repetitive tendencies that inspired other painful music as In The Drive-In. One of the worst and most pointless albums I’ve done for 1001. Not just a Yank Crime but also an International Crime.

Post-Hardcore Post-Punk Emo Noise-Rock - this album gave me a headache. Some tracks, "Do You Compute" and "Sinews" for example, start off well, but then the "vocals" (shouting) start and the tracks go into a decline.

It's just noise with what sounds like a voice in the background, moaning(it also includes the worst intro of any song ever. I'll let you be surprised, so I won't spoil it). Most tolerable track: "Do You Compute".

OK, it's slowly getting a bit strange, or I feel strange. I can't even remember when I gave the last album a positive rating. Is that what was intended? No, I can't imagine that it was intended. Should I praise crap to the heavens? I find that extremely offensiv. Maybe I should just take a break after this album. But now to the album "Drive Like Jehu" OK, I don't have to understand what that means. What I think I understand is the bands name "Yank Crime" I don't care about Yank in this context, but I understand "Crime" very well, because this whole album is a crime. The title "Sinews" on the compilation "Head Start to Purgatory" doesn't surprise me at all. The whole album is a kind of "purgatory experience" So once again the stars are clearly in the minus range. A note on the 'art work' of the album, the singer and guitarist really did a magic job. Enough now, otherwise I'll have to...

Surprised to see this San Diego band on this list. Rocket From The Crypt was the band everyone looked up to at the time. Not sure I was aware of the connection. My buddies shared the same bill with Jehu quite a few times. Perplexes me how the had a following at the time, let alone making it on this list.

I appreciate this list highlighting more obscure albums, but this one deserves to fade away into obscurity. Between the screeching guitars and the god-awful "singing", it's as if this album was designed to induce headaches. It was absolutely dreadful from the first song. A punk album does not need to be this long, and punk songs definitely shouldn't regularly be clocking in at over 5 minutes. A couple of these songs were 9 minutes and they felt even longer. At one point I thought I must be mercifully close to the end but I wasn't even halfway. The silence when it ended sounded delightful.

Hated it

The thing I like about punk songs is that they are fast, loud, and short. This album is missing one of those crucial elements. Can you guess what it is? Every song on here is twice as long as it needs to be. "Do You Compute" has a 1:45 intro with the same 6 notes played over and over again. "Super Unison" opens with 30 seconds of a tinnitus inducing ringing. I don't necessarily dislike these elements, but they go on for way too long.

I am not surprised this is the last album they recorded. the real question is why they were allowed to make 2 albums. Also, this album is way too long. This honestly gave me a headache!!!!

(Actually this song was just a little bad to it’s credit) What the fuck was the start of Super Union trying to achieve apart from annoying the listeners parents who can hear this album being blasted from their angsty son’s bedroom. New Intro was fairly pleasant but that was maybe just in comparison to everything before. The third worst version of New Math(s) I’ve heard (Lehrer, Burnham, these dweebs) Human Interest was fine, I was fairly neutral to it. Yeah just not that good music really. The only Yank Crime I care about is when those Massholes dumped a load of perfectly good tea in Boston Harbour.

I don’t mind heavier music or screaming in songs, hell my teenage years were full of it. But sometimes it really is just noise and nothing about this album was really sticking out to me. I just wanted to get to the end of it. Really makes you wonder how some records made it on this list. But hey if you dig it, crack on!

Apparently this is a post-punk album. Which I guess means it sounds like punk but is less fun. Quite the chore to stick it out for the whole album. Not a fan of scream singing. Even when I’m occasion there works be some instrumental melody, it would eventually evolve into the screaming again. And the air siren was just freaking mean. According to Wikipedia the band “quietly disbanded” after making this album. Not sure if that is code for “slunk away to find day jobs”.

I did not 'get' this at all. Don't get the name, or the album title. The music is really monotonous, and clearly no-one told them that punk died in 1977. Bailed after about 4 songs.

All sounds the same, nothing distinct about it compared to a million other emo bands. Why are the vocals so low in the mix, what's the point in having a singer when you can't hear them?

Do You Compute and Super Unison have TERRIBLE beginnings for normal ears. Not fun, not enjoyable. Don’t care how good it is after, having my cringe for the first 30 seconds is a strategy. Also, this music raises my heartbeat. Not really what I’m looking for when I’m trying to get through a Wednesday.

It’s a no for me, dawg. I gave each song the old college try, but to be honest I don’t think I listened to any song in its entirety. And then I put on my Summer of Taylor Faves playlist.

Pre-listening: I think I listened to this a year or two ago while compiling an “early emo” playlist. One song (only), Luau, made the playlist. That doesn’t bode well. After listening: yeah, don’t care for this. The first album where no songs will make my ongoing playlist.

This is often out of time and I’m not convinced these lads could play in time even if they really wanted to, I don’t think they are very talented musicians. This is horrible, nothing to redeem this shit. And an hour long? It’s a slam-dunk one star!

I can see why I went through the entire decade of the 90s never having heard of them. Their music is ear stabbingly bad.

It isn't a fully blown screaming album but there are certainly elements of it. The album was entirely too long. I did not enjoy it. There is no need to revisit.

Grunge had impact en pathos, en zowaar een aura dat het wat te melden had. Helaas is dat aan deze gasten voorbij gegaan. In plaats daarvan zijn ze in de punk-jaren-tachtig blijven hangen. Hoog tempo, valse gitaren, zwabberend geluid. 53 minuten afzien in de hoop dat de volgende plaat beter is.

Ze doen het er een beetje om. Zo irritant mogelijk muziek maken. Een beetje vals mag best en waarom zingen als je schreeuwen kan? Prima hoor. Lekker doen. Ieder zijn hobby.

I didn't care for this album too much. the instrumentals and yelling got annoying and loud and none of the songs really stood out to me. the only song I somewhat liked was hand over fist because it wasn't quite as vocally heavy as the others, but I still wouldn't ever listen to it again. 3/10

jesusfkingchrist "Here Come the Rome Plows" is on the shortlist for worst rock song ever recorded. Overall: a great representation of the parts I hated about the 90s "alt" scene. TL;DR: No composition skills, gross screaming, faux-complexity as if showing off to high school freaks how much the world sucks and trying to pass off as mysterious art. NO. 0 anythings.

I could never see myself voluntarily listening to this shit ever again under any circumstance. If my life somehow ends up so far in the gutter to end up somewhere that this album was playing, I would survey my options and make my departure as quickly and efficiently as possible. Look, I’m sure they’re achieving everything they’d like to in this album and there’s certainly an audience for it. But I am not part of that audience

What I don't get with all this is two things: they are not very good at whatever it is they think they are doing, they don't play with imagination nor verve and they don't give you a good feeling about it. Now I'm not talking about Brotherhood of Man type "good feeling", I mean they don't evoke a good feeling through having something to say. I saw Bob Mould a couple of year's back and it was heavy, the loudest thing I've ever heard, and he didn't let up for hours. And I came away invigorated, high on the performance. With this they have nothing to say and they say it badly. That said, Super Unison has some ok moments, you can see what this might have been if they........

You know the scene in "Scott Pilgrim" with Crash & the Boys, where it takes six seconds for them to introduce "I'm So Sad, So Very, Very Sad," and that intro is longer than the actual song, which is only a four-count on the drums followed by the words "So sad" sung over two notes on the guitar and bass? This is sorta the opposite of that. Drive Like Jehu just scream "Do You Compute" for seven minutes, or "Rome Plows" for 5:45. Same level of lyrical content and complexity as Crash, but they take infinitely longer to perform it. And it's a small sample size, but I'm pretty sure Crash & the Boys are better musicians. I gave up halfway through the nearly 9.5-minute-long fourth track. Music may not be a race, but I've got shit to do, man. Like watch "Scott Pilgrim" for the umpteenth time.
