Grunge had impact en pathos, en zowaar een aura dat het wat te melden had. Helaas is dat aan deze gasten voorbij gegaan. In plaats daarvan zijn ze in de punk-jaren-tachtig blijven hangen. Hoog tempo, valse gitaren, zwabberend geluid. 53 minuten afzien in de hoop dat de volgende plaat beter is.

Ze doen het er een beetje om. Zo irritant mogelijk muziek maken. Een beetje vals mag best en waarom zingen als je schreeuwen kan? Prima hoor. Lekker doen. Ieder zijn hobby.

Doet me gelijk heel erg denken aan At the Drive In. En de zanger heeft dan ook gezegd, dat zonder Drive Like Jehu er geen Relationship of Command zou zijn, oftewel hun iconische post-hardcore album. Dat net als Drive Like Jehu soms ietwat (te) experimenteel aan doet, maar ook gebaseerd is op een kakofonie aan gitaargeluiden. Het legendarische At the Drive In is daarna opgesplitst in the Mars Volta, die bijna nog experimenteler waren, en het door mij geliefde Sparta, waar gitarist Jim Ward lekker de vocalen mag schreeuwen. Maar waar de liedjes een stuk minder experimenteel zijn en gewoon lekker rocken. Aangezien Sparta vast niet in deze 1001 staat en zelfs At the Drive In niet (wat blijft dit toch een zelfingenomen snobistisch lijstje bij tijd en wijlen), zullen we het met Drive Like Jehu moeten doen. Die dus niet kunnen tippen aan hun eigen legacy. Maar omdat er te weinig van dit soort muziek in staat, geef ik dit 5 sterren. Ook ter compensatie van de 1en van anderen :-P

A good solid record with enough melody and good songs to complement the driving hardcore sound from Drive Like Jehu. Not for all tastes, but I would have been all over this during the 90's when this was released and even now it's still very listenable. A bit long, but then again they only released two albums, so we should happy with what they put out.

I really dont know what to think of this. There are some good sections and some horrible parts.

First half of the album done, and it's really weird, but I'm pretty sure I love it?! It's definitely not perfect, but man it does well to bridge the gap between punk and grunge. Some of the grooves the instrumentalists get into together are truly magical. This is one I'm really glad I discovered. It falls off quite a bit in the 2nd half sadly. Still pretty good, but do not see myself rushing back to this album at any point. Favorite track: Super Unison (minus the first 30 seconds)

Nothing really stands out for me on this but I do quite enjoy some of the riffs.

Decent, could've been amazing if it wasn't distractingly loud and occasionally overlong.

Interesting. Didn't quite grab me on first listen. A little too noisy for my taste, but it's not random, there's something special going on here. I'll settle with a 3 star for now. Luau is definitely a memorable track.

You only need one album by Drive Like Jehu, and this is it. Then, you've pretty much got everything, because - just as it did 30 years ago (give or take) - it a;; becomes fairly predictable. Good, but predictable.

This is pretty sick. I can see why this was so influential in the hardcore scene. A really cohesive sound that just works. Super raw but also understandable, even for someone who doesn't listen to much hardcore. Not an everyday listen for me, but it was fun and I would definitely see them live. 3/5

Post rock bs

This album opened as a 1 for me but then managed to claw its way up to maybe a mid 2. At first it was the typical annoying hardcore bullshit and luau was probably the worst of this but then super unison and new union actually broke up the unrelenting noise for a bit and it was actually alright. Overall it still made me physically uncomfortable by the end like these overlong hardcore albums do but it at least doesn’t deserve a 1. Also the Spotify artist banner of this band is the most white suburban dad “getting some buddies together to mess around on guitar” core I’ve ever seen.

Knowing nothing about Drive Like Jehu, my guess as to what the music would be like based on the cover was pretty close. Overall I liked listening to Yank Crime. "New Intro" was the track I liked the most. That track and some of the longer tracks (7+ minutes) reminded me of some of the progressive metal that began after the 80s. I can't say I'm a new fan. By the time I got to "Sinew", the last (and my least favorite) track, I was ready for a break. There was too much hoarse screaming on this album for me to want to come back, even if that level of screaming wasn't on all of the tracks.

At first I didn’t think I would get on with this at all but around a third of the way in I found it was becoming infectious. I don’t know if I’d re-listen but glad to have had my horizons broadened by this one.

Got dizzy with this one

Genres: Post-hardcore, math rock, post-punk, emo Formed: San Diego in 1990 Run time: 12 songs, 1 hour, 9 min Yank Crime is the second and final album. Track 1, “Yank Crime” - I’ve no idea what it’s about, but it is high energy punk inspired music. Track 2, “Do You Compute” is light on lyrics but the high energy instrumental sections make up for it. Track 3, “Golden Brown” - It isn’t the Strangler’s song, but presumably the reference to drugs is the same. Another track, light on lyric but heavy use of instrumentals. Track 4, “Luau” - More of the same. It is nearly nine and a half minutes long and it starts to feel it by the end. Track 5, “Super Unison” - Track 6, “New Intro” - Instrumental. Low energy but slightly tortuous sound. Track 7, “New Math” - Like all the other tracks the lyrics are profound, but they aren’t inane pop, so all is good. Track 8, "Human Interest" - Track 9, "Sinews" - The slight decrease in energy and the change of tone would suggest this is the “Emo” track. I haven’t felt that for any other song. Only track 1 passes the 1M plays bar on Spotify (actually over 1.5M). Everything else is well under 1M. In fact most are 2-3k only. If you’re after an assault on the (auditory) senses, then all this album hits the mark. If you like one track , you like them all. The guttural vocals are easily matched by the high energy instruments. Unlike some punk bands, these guys can really play. It’s not my usual thing but I enjoyed it. Unless you’re on a race track, I wouldn’t recommend listening whilst driving. It’s the sort of music that makes you go faster, and this album delivers 150mph! My Rating: ****

Hard, angry punk ain't my jam.

First things first, this is totally not my style but I will say I was pleasantly surprised. The instrumentation on this album was great. The guitar and drums were catchy, moody and had really a infectious energy to them. Despite the vocals being intentionally loud and brash, I think the instrumentation matched the vocals perfectly and (to me) made this album. I looked through other reviews of this album and the number one criticism I saw was "I don't like being screamed at". I can understand the sentiment when it comes to screamo or some metal but personally I don't necessarily feel that way about this album. I think the vocals were brash but definitely not unlistenable. I view them as another instrument and with that mindset they fit the track perfectly. Either way I really enjoyed this album and liked all the songs but "New Math". 9/10

I was sure I was going to hate this from basically the first note, but then it grew on me a little. It's a decent thrash-punk-metal album, but I'm not sure there is anything special about it. Seems like a flash-in-a-pan band made a flash-in-the-pan album. Enjoyable - but, did I have to hear it before I died? No.

I didn't care for this album too much. the instrumentals and yelling got annoying and loud and none of the songs really stood out to me. the only song I somewhat liked was hand over fist because it wasn't quite as vocally heavy as the others, but I still wouldn't ever listen to it again. 3/10

Pioneers of post hardcore and emocore, this album apparently gained retrospective appreciation long after the band had split up. Heavy and earnest, but enjoyable. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Golden Brown Date listened: 18/05/23

Vraiment aimécet album, on sent clairement des grosses insipirations de la scène grunge, beaucoup de moments faisaient penser à du Nirvana plus abrasif. J'ai vraiment aimé la balance de moments plus heavy et de moments plus doux. Son vraiment typique post-hardcore/emo, mais très bien exécuté et sans tomber dans les clichés, ça sonne même comme un album phare du genre. 9/10

Hearing this album for the first time completely rewired my DNA, and I wasn't even a teenager at the time. This is the goalpost to meet (and fail to meet because no-one else does it like this album).

jesusfkingchrist "Here Come the Rome Plows" is on the shortlist for worst rock song ever recorded. Overall: a great representation of the parts I hated about the 90s "alt" scene. TL;DR: No composition skills, gross screaming, faux-complexity as if showing off to high school freaks how much the world sucks and trying to pass off as mysterious art. NO. 0 anythings.

a bit angry, a bit headachy, but good if the mood arises

This album just cranks it for an hour straight. Never heard of this in my life but this was worth finding. Fat slapping rock brah. It's epic. It sounds insanely good for 1994, about 10 years ahead of it's time. It doesn't have the muddy production a lot of 90's rock and grunge have, which is refreshing every now and then. Score: 90 Art: 70

I've never heard of the band, but holy shit this slaps. Noisy, loud, and almost non stop relentless. Makes me feel cool and comfy.

While I can see a lot of merit in this album, oh lordy is it fatiguing. It could do with being 15 minutes shorter.

This album is great, it's racing, abrasive and raw. A great output from a very short-lived but excellent band. Had been a really long time since I listened to this. Excellent.

Абсолютно поддерживаю комментарий Егора по поводу длительности. Опять же, будь я в клубе на лайве этой группы, мне было бы прикольно подольше поколбаситься подольше. Но затянуто. Панки рвут струны гитар, хорошо так нагибают. Причём это не просто необдуманная долбёжка. Напротив: чуваки играются с размерами, панк вальс хороший получился в Luau. А в New Math вообще что-то сложное происходит с размерами. Короче интересно слушать. Интересно, но тяжело, если не фанат. Чёт в общем никак я не подружусь с такой музыкой (диссонансы, скрим мимо нот), и я её всё ещё слушаю больше как "ну надо послушать, альбом ведь в списке".

Not for me

Wow. I always have a soft spot for bands that can channel the raw power of noise and rage and these guys can definitely do that. But they also stretch out on some pretty long, complex songs. A few of these tracks are intricate and kind of proggy. Is that one of the distinctions that makes a band post-hardcore rather than simply hardcore? The music is much more nuanced and complicated than your typical punk rock. Really impressed with this but it's a lot to take in on a first listen. I'm interested to play it again to get a more full sense of the pacing and scope of the album.

Love an album that starts a song in 5/8, that's pretty impressive and weird. Really exciting music. Actually sounds similar to guitar stuff I would write when I was playing heavy metal. This sounds like Converge mixed with a little Gorguts and a lot of crust punk. Very clean recordings too for how dirty of a sound it is. Kind of blown away by how clean the recordings are. The transition from track 1 to 2 is great. I'm thoroughly enjoying this. This is really a sick album. In the last ~15 or so years I can't think of many times in which someone has showed me a metal/heavier group that A. I haven't heard of and B. that I liked right from the start. Metal is a funny genre to me because I love it and I spent so much time listening to it but in reality I dislike a very large percentage of metal music that I've heard. There's a lot of junk out there and you'll find junk in any genre when you've exhausted listening to a lot of the good stuff. There's a lot going on here and I'll be revisiting it! Really happy with this.

This sounds like a more intense version of the most intense Nirvana, Fugazi or Sonic Youth songs. I like this record, but it's a little too repetitive and dissonant for the sake of being dissonant at times. I like most of John Reis' other bands better (Hot Snakes, Rocket from the Crypt, Plosivs, etc.) and some of the bands this band influenced are among my favorites, like At the drive-in and Refused. Favorite song: Do You Compute.

Hardcore punk meets complex rhythms; what’s not to love here? I really enjoy bands that just let a bass line ride mid-song, then build it up to something. I compute.

Shame this wasn’t an instrumental record.

A bit of a shame that only two albums were released by these guys. This is the type of album that you just randomly stumble across and are very glad to have found. Peak underground punk that exemplifies the alternative music scene of the '80s and '90s. In other words, this is the obscure band that your own favorite bands listened to as kids, which then inspired them to form their own groups and make music themselves. Standout track is Super Unison.

I was listening to this album as I was doing housework and then had to put in on pause when I got a phone call... and never started listening to it again, nor do I have a desire to do so. With other albums I didn't like I could at least put them on in the background and not be too bothered, but I'm pretty sure this one elevated my blood pressure. There were a couple of instrumental sections that weren't bad so I'll give it credit there. 1.5/5, rounded up to 2.

I love this one. It sounds to me like a cross between the noisiest Nirvana songs and Slint's "Spiderland." For an album this old, it sounds really good today. All of the guitar tones especially hold up, and none of the energy of the performance is lost in the recording. On first listen, I was worried that a sound this abrasive would become overwhelming on such a long album, but I have grown to appreciate it more on the second and third listen. I had a conversation with Tom yesterday about how all of the harsh, piercing sounds on this record were clearly intentional, and the reason became clear once I started to pick up on more of the lyrics. This album is repeatedly telling the listener to fuck off. The abrasive nature is designed to support the anti-imperialist message. The band is trying to keep people out of where they don't belong. If you're on board with the message, it's a tense and exciting listen the whole way through. Cover Art 6/10: These guys sound like they would have terrible handwriting 👍: Do You Compute, New Math, Human Interest, Hand Over Fist, Bullet Train to Vegas 👎: none really, I generally don't like long songs, but I think everything on here is justified

Albums like these are why I was excited for this whole album a day thing cuz idk if I would have sought this album out but I ended up really enjoying it. Definitely was a challenging album to listen to but was better for it in my opinion. The rawness and edge didn’t feel force or like a crutch to hold up shitty instrumentals and made it feel like a loud music intense live show. Super unison really stood out as an interesting track and helped set the tone for the really solid second half that followed and this long dynamic track set it apart from a lot of hardcore punk I’ve heard before. I’m hesitant to rate it as a 5 but I could see it getting to a 5 after re-listening a few times cuz I’ll definitely come back to a lot of these songs. 👍: super unison, hand over fist

So a pretty cool album but as far as punk goes it’s pretty average. I really like the dark tones. The piercing sounds are a unique element that I could maybe dig live but in my car it was painful. Maybe I’m just a yuppie tho. There was a bridge in hand over fist that sounded kinda like a (I think) foo fighters song. That track is a cool departure from the albums sound. Id love to mosh to bullet train to vegas

I could never see myself voluntarily listening to this shit ever again under any circumstance. If my life somehow ends up so far in the gutter to end up somewhere that this album was playing, I would survey my options and make my departure as quickly and efficiently as possible. Look, I’m sure they’re achieving everything they’d like to in this album and there’s certainly an audience for it. But I am not part of that audience

Quite liked about half of this? Solid 3.5 (rounded down as per protocol), potential to go up. Could come back to this one.

Not my favorite punk music, but not as bad as I originally thought. A few of the songs were just too much, but I enjoyed the two slower ones (New Intro and Sinews). The rest of it was pretty average to me. Not something I would go out of my way to listen to. Nothing added to list. 4/10

An absolute masterpiece

Damn, this is intense. I can take a song or two, and I appreciate the commitment to a sound, but damn - hard to take almost an hour of it (more than an hour with the bonus tracks, which I didn't realize were bonus tracks right away). Not totally convinced this belongs on the list, as the second and final album from a band that disbanded shortly after, and who has ever heard of them?

More into this for the math rock parts than the emo.

Definitely sounds like a band I'd find today in a dive bar punk show. But pretty forward for 1994, interesting counterpoint to grunge for sure. I enjoyed a lot of the weirder noise elements and atonal flourishings as well, but it was a bit too long to me. Towards the end it definitely starts to show a bit of the proto-emo trappings. Probably could have stopped the album halfway and been great as-is. Still very nice, if not a bit tiring. Interesting this is their 2nd and final album though.

This was legit a great surprise. When I woke up and checked what album I would be playing today, I kinda didn't want to play this one. "It's too early for post-hardcore" I said. lol But I played it anyways, and boy oh boy it was great end to end. At The Drive-in and Mars Volta vibes through and through, this album was an instant save for me.

This wasn't bad. A little noisy. Some of the longer tracks went on a little too long, but the shorter ones were fun little bursts of energy. The math-rocky elements were fun to hear.

Not for me. Loud discordant. I had a hard time getting thru even 30 seconds of any track on the album.

This would be a 3.5 for me, but it is mostly one-note sonically. There are moments that really grabbed me, and it was mostly when the band slowed down, or quieted down from the mostly loud dynamic.

Very impressively played, to maintain that level of intensity is super hard. But too aggressive and shouty for these sucker-for-a-melody ears.

Did I like it? Yes. Will I ever listen to it again? Probably not.

You’ll love it if you like mathy and technical rock, but it’s a pretty decent listen even if you don’t.

This was a surprisingly great album! I have not heard of these guys, and though I don't spend my time fully engulfed in the punk world, I have a pretty good grasp on the variety of name brand punk bands. So I came into this one clean slate, and really enjoyed it. It's got that Cali punk sound, like Dead Kennedys and a little like Snot, and overall a great mix of guitars and perfect vocals for the style. Crazy they only had one major label album before splitting up. Almost pulled a 4 star rating, but it's challenging when compared to so many other great albums, even when limiting to the punk genre. I'd toss em a 3.8 if I could.

Yet another band I have not come across before. Instinctively like it. Great driving beat on most tracks leavened with stuff like 'New Intro'.

How can a "fringe-rock artifact" be one of only a finite number of records one must hear? This is tedious noise.

What I don't get with all this is two things: they are not very good at whatever it is they think they are doing, they don't play with imagination nor verve and they don't give you a good feeling about it. Now I'm not talking about Brotherhood of Man type "good feeling", I mean they don't evoke a good feeling through having something to say. I saw Bob Mould a couple of year's back and it was heavy, the loudest thing I've ever heard, and he didn't let up for hours. And I came away invigorated, high on the performance. With this they have nothing to say and they say it badly. That said, Super Unison has some ok moments, you can see what this might have been if they........

I found this record compelling. Never heard of the band before. I loved the pace/speed of the music. The lyrics were irrelevant but the singer’s voice was as important as the instruments. The band rushed headlong & took you with them. I particularly enjoyed the 4 lengthy trax, on which the band really stretches out. A wonderful surprise.

Drive Like Jehu were a band I missed the first time around, although they were theoretically right in my wheelhouse (noisy, heavy, angsty alt-rock). I think it was because this was their first Australian release, and it came out shortly after the record store I worked at, Scratches Records, had closed, and so my need, ability and desire to keep up on new releases had evaporated. And I have subsequently heard the name, but never heard any of their songs until now. Reading about this filled me with foreboding. Terms like "proto-emo" and "math rock" inspired some dread. I don't really like either of those things. Too much empty posturing and calculation for my taste, which (despite loud guitars) can get in the way of the Rock. I like the Rock. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I started playing this. It felt noisy and spontaneous, and while it has some of the characteristics of math-rock (changes in time signatures and tempo, some intricate guitar arrangements), this was a loud and energetic burst of adrenaline and squalling noise, that felt like they were playing by the seat of their pants. I like that, Noisily and viscerally recorded, when the record stated playing, I was was sure that it must have been a Steve Albini recording. I am still shocked that it isn't. It has his trademark sound of an unadorned and unfussy production that doesn't get in the way of the band sounding like a band. It reminds me of some slightly earlier records like God Machine's "Songs from the Second Storey" or the Murder Inc. S/T album, both of which got a lot of play in my house in 1992. In fact, I can imagine that if this record had come out in 1992, I would have been a fan. But I'm not 22 anymore. I am an old man with tired ears, and I find this album exhausting. I quite like the track Luau (which has a bit more light and shade than most of the record), By the end of the record, it all is sounding like a big noisy shouting match, and I am done. I'm giving this 2.5, rounding up to 3 because I imagine that my younger self might have quite liked this.

The next transition in post-hardcore from the likes of Fugazi, surely influencing later genres such as math rock and emo. It's loud, chaotic, and abrasive. These songs take however much time as they want, with 2 songs going over 9 minutes. The melodies are incredibly complex and interesting, constantly shifting time signatures and tempo and repeating themes to the point where you never know where a song is going. The music is intentionally off at countless points and it just grabs your attention the whole ride. You can tell there is purpose to what they do, even if the structure isn't well-defined. Much like prog rock and death metal, it's a bit too much to separate these tracks when they're so in your face, and can be overwhelming at its 70-minute timestamp. But the more I listen to it, the more I can separate what makes each track stand out.

This wasn’t fun.

It's like being in a drunken bar brawl. Noisy, abrasive. The members play as if they're all attempting to compete for your attention, somehow working against and with each other throughout the record. It's a record I know will have mixed reviews on here, but man, do I love it. From this record, we get the whole late 90s/early 00s emo boom. Favorite tracks: "Do You Compute?", "Here Come the Rome Plows", "Luau"

Never heard of them before. It's very loud, aggressive, and frustrating to listen to at times. However there were a couple tracks on here that I think may have some potential. I'm going to give this a second listen through and see if those songs can salvage my overall opinion of this, which isn't very high.

For noise rock, this is pretty great. A few tracks went on a smidge to long, but somehow they still held it all together. How did I miss this in 1994? I was probably still listening to Dirty.

I'm happy that this kind of astringent, smash-mouth music exists in the world. Which isn't to say I like it much - whilst I can admire the animating spirit and willingness to play with song structure, I can't say Yank Crime ever reached me at an emotional level. That said, 'Luau' is a might piece of music, and I like a bit of spit and agitation now and then. In no hurry to listen again, however.

Overall, it was a fine album. I did not care for the screaming though. I really liked the guitar tones and did enjoy a few songs on this album. Overall, a decent album, just not really my thing. I'd like it a lot more if the songs were sung instead of screamed.

What an odd name for a band, for an album, featuring straightforward but yet inexplicable album art. So, no idea what to expect. Ah, noise. I like some of what's going on guitar-wise. But I'm finding it too relentless. Favorite: Bullet Train to Vegas. Also "Luau" is a fun word, isn't it?

Look I'm not qualified to rate this. In fact I dreaded listening to it. But, piled high of caffeine, I went all in. And the first track delivered Here Come The Rome Plows is high octane (a cliche I know) and it didn't stop delivering. Last time I'll listen to it, but I respect those who get their energy from music like this.

Top 10. And top 5 major label of the 90s

This would've been in my wheelhouse in '94 if I knew it. It hits in that true post-punk / early grunge bell. My only gripe is no album from this genre / era should be more than forty minutes, the 1:10 length of this album drags out a good experience into a meh one. Especially when you have a nine minute track and then a 9 ½ minute version to close out the album. 3.5 / 5.

You know the scene in "Scott Pilgrim" with Crash & the Boys, where it takes six seconds for them to introduce "I'm So Sad, So Very, Very Sad," and that intro is longer than the actual song, which is only a four-count on the drums followed by the words "So sad" sung over two notes on the guitar and bass? This is sorta the opposite of that. Drive Like Jehu just scream "Do You Compute" for seven minutes, or "Rome Plows" for 5:45. Same level of lyrical content and complexity as Crash, but they take infinitely longer to perform it. And it's a small sample size, but I'm pretty sure Crash & the Boys are better musicians. I gave up halfway through the nearly 9.5-minute-long fourth track. Music may not be a race, but I've got shit to do, man. Like watch "Scott Pilgrim" for the umpteenth time.

This has been a good week for me on 1001 albums generator. A lot of 4s, a lot of 5s, the page keeps giving me good albums, and as soon as I've heard that virtuoso but punk-ish riff at the beginning of "Here Comes the Rome Plows" I was like, "oh crap, this is going to be good!" And it was. This is basically emo mathcore and honestly, I'm digging it in a way I didn't expect. This album confirms my theory that, if I were born in a different decade, I would've been an emo, lol.

I want to listen to this again. Like WANT to.

Don't know if it's revisit but I did quite like some of it's chaos.

I've never been much of a post-hardcore guy but this album is warming me up to it. Punchy, emotional, and hypnotic; good stuff!

A very disappointing album. From the long drawn out songs, to the noise walls throughout, to the overall length and lack of shining moments, this album felt like a full dud that misses a lot of the appeal of its various included genres and aesthetics.

Wasn't expecting to hear any mathcore on this list, but here we are. I thought the guitars were really interesting in this. I appreciated how they used intricate angular guitar riffs to supplement the raw angry sound. To me, it never comes off as brutality for it's own sake, but something more intentional and musical if you listen more closely.

I wanted to listen multiple times because I just couldn't tell what I liked and what I didn't. Aggressive hardcore songs are common, even some that have melodic breaks in them, but the length of the songs is what seemed uncommon to me. I still don't know if it was good or bad, but I've listened 3-4 times and still go back to it, so I guess that means I like it.

Wow, belle découverte pour moi ici. Définitivement un band qui a influencé les Every Time I Die, The Bronx et Fear Before The March Of Flames, 3 bands que j'ai découvert au début des années 2000. Je suis fan des construction mélodiques qui sont faites à partir des dissonances. En plus l'énergie est contagieuse. On a un bon balancement dans la voix aussi entre la voix mélodique et plus criarde. L'autre band du guitariste, Rocket From the Crypt, est plus accessible et plaira sûrement à plus de gens, mais j'ai une petit préférence pour le côté très indie de Drive Like Jehu. Je n'ai pas porté attention aux textes, mais musicalement, j'adore.

i'm digging a lot of this album. same scene as the slightly later (i think) at the drive in (and much later, mars volta) echoes of the entire future screemo genre can be heard here. put some operatic polish on it and tighten the production quality and you have something resembling system of a down buuuuut you're gonna want to skip at least the first 30-40 seconds track five super unison. i'm feeling generous so i'll call it an homage to the endless and ear splitting space odyssey 2001 scene

I wanted to like this but it was just really rough I though New Intro sounded kinda nice and I also love the multiple uses of 5/4 in the album but overall it was just kinda mid 5/10

This first track is a BANGER. I'm fucking out of breath just listening to it. If the rest of the album is like this it's another 5-star. The hooks in this album are GREAT. Yeah this is 5 stars. The writing is crazy. First time we've gotten two 5-stars back to back.

I've never listened to this band before and now I don't really know why, this is pretty great. I've never been a huge fan of hardcore outside of Fugazi but they kind of always felt like their own thing and I've never dug much deeper, I've barely listened to Minor Threat. In my head I'm always kind of looking for pop hooks so I prefer the punkier end of loud, fast non metal stuff. I'll probably still prefer that but I'm tempted to explore more now. Also I love Sonic Youth (a band that are not strangers to a pop hooks) and I can hear some of the same kind of dissonance that feels like one of their signatures here.

Pleasantly surprised by this one. Off the bat the first song didn’t really rub me the right way, but after a few songs I started really enjoying it. The songs have a really good pace so each is a sort of experience. 7/10

Only listened to parts of the first five tracks before fleeing this assault on my ears. Usually the only good thing that can be said about songs and albums like these is that they're really short. Not so this monstrosity.

One of the more important proto-emo albums of all time; with every hook that a guitar riff would bring and the yearning and screaming that comes from the vocal, Yank Crime should be considered as one of the greatest punk albums of the 90s. If there was one album to end things on and plant a flag into the ground of what was to be the future of punk, this is the one.

First album that is new to me to get 5 stars

Another important piece in the post-hardcore puzzle. Drive Like Jehu leans heavy into making more noise than their contemporaries and doing it in a way that feels like calculated chaos. Guitars drive and clash against each other like cars of a demolition derby, occasionally playing in sync playing in a satisfyingly fast way to deliver the hook. It's a vicious and biting record that accomplishes it's sound in spades.

very heavy. good distorted guitars, raw vocals. solid bass that grounds otherwise chaotic arrangements - reminds me of duff mckagan. very noisy and grating, i am sure it would really appeal to someone who enjoys that sorta stuff. made me want to listen to appetite for destruction (which i immediately did after finishing this project)

Man, I connected with no part of this album. Felt like an hour plus of just screaming and I wanted to scream back at it. Not an enjoyable listen for me… but cheer to those who dig this album!

A discovery

Post-hardcore is a real borderline genre for me. Most of my fav music is heavy and I listen a fair chunk of *traditional* hardcore, but this tends toward non-Seattle alternative sounds too much for my liking. It gets up and going, there are cool riffs and passages... but only for brief flashes. On the other hand, it descends into downright noise allllll the time. The singing is pretty cool and I can hear the potential, but it feels like an idea that wasn't fully fleshed out (I know such a later comparison isn't really fair, but see Clowns for this vocal style perfected). Drummer is well and truly on top of the game though, nothing virtuosic but he holds the entire thing together imo. I guess my biggest criticism is the song structure itself: it feels like the average song is 5% intro, 25% guts, then 70% long-winded dissonant outro. This formula gets old at 53min. Still, I tapped my foot enough that it gets a pretty easy 3. If it was half an hour it'd probably be a 4 tbh. 3/5.

Some killer guitar riffs happening on this album but I don’t understand why this would be a top album. Nothing to separate them between other bands.

Shame on the list for wanting to steal 1 hour and 9 minutes of my wicked little life. But I maintained the upper hand: I stopped even trying to listen after what seemed like the 15th song.

Why am I listening to something that was about 20 years too late? It's like Punk had taken that long to reach these guys. One moment they were strumming out Beach Boys tunes and then someone burst in holding a copy of 'God Save the Queen' circa 1993 and said "have you heard these guys?" 1001Albums seems to have a warped idea on what is ground-breaking. There are like 150 pages devoted to the 60's and 200 pages to the 90's. Which was the most ground-breaking and influential decade? Mmmmm.....

Was not in the mood for this at all, so I don’t know I gave it a fair shake - although I also think it had some objective flaws. Some really intolerable noise garbage. And though it’s par for this particular course, this particular style of shouty vocals doesn’t for me improve at length.

I'm glad I gave this one a chance and listened to it all the way through. I try to listen to each of these openly as I attempt to scrub away preconceptions and past experiences with music, but it's often difficult to do so. In this case, as soon as I heard the vocals, I recoiled a little because I generally don't like listening to screamed and shrieked lyrics. I appreciate much about punk and post-punk and the countless offshoots and subgenres, but most of the time I don't very much enjoy a lot of that music on a consistent basis. While the screaming did get to me at times, the musicianship on this album is outstanding. They compose, perform, and record superbly well. This project is helping me in so many ways. Play on!

I enjoyed this, but it definitely goes on too long. It's not just the album length, but I feel like every song should've been half as long, if not even shorter.

I enjoy the musical side of this album. I'm not the biggest fan of the vocals but it isn't too bad and is very fitting for the genre. My biggest gripe with this is the length of the songs. 2 songs over 9 minutes and another two over 7 is a bit much. Just gets stale after a little. I really like the first 4 and a half minutes on Luau but after that there were still 5 more minutes to suffer through. Sinews however I think does justify the length.

Musically, they had some decent stuff but I wasn’t a fan of the vocals and many of their songs just sounded like noise.

Sometimes an album just clicks, it defies time and preferences. Though I was not an immediate fan of Yank Crime, it did grow on me over the course of a few weeks in the summer of 1994. I fell in love with the way the songs built from a strange whirring feedback like in Super Unison to punching you in the face when you're least expecting it like a full blast of cold air. But then there's melodic single-notes over a foreboding bass line that builds and fizzles like in the instrumental New Intro. The range of emotion contained in this album is undeniable. There are a ton of surprises buried within these tracks. Luau is absolutely incredible as is Super Union. These long songs (7+ mins.) encapsulate a wealth of ups-and-downs and create tension, release, and melancholic beauty by using powerfully scripted chaos along the way. A lot has changed since '94. Back then the music scene was completely different, CD's reigned, music diversity was hard to come by and the digital revolution had barely begun. Cell phones weren't a thing and even pagers were a novelty. Today, nearly 30 years later, I still find myself searching out this album to listen to. I was fortunate enough to see DLJ reunited for a few shows in 2016. Part of me wishes they'd get back together and release new music, but the other part of me knows this album was perfect for the time it was released, and that time will never be replicated.

Rock genres can be hard to pin down. DLJ is described as post-hardcore, math rock, post-punk, and emo. While they don't sound like what I think of as emo, apparently they were on the leading edge of the genre's evolution before it reached its heights in the early 00s. And I had to get further into the album before it crystallized for me where they belonged. Because I hated the first track and it was really hard to get through. I thought I was going to have to tell pretentious-ass how much I disliked one of his favorites. Things got better though, as the screaming and noise began to take shape rather than just existing for its own sake. pretentious-ass also recommended giving it multiple listens - that did not help the first track (still awful), but it did help the rest. I'm glad I powered through the first song because I do like the rest of the album. Exploring deeper into the references on the Wikipedia page, I found an article that helped understand DLJ's place in the bigger rock picture, placing them firmly among post-hardcore contemporaries like Glassjaw and At the Drive-In. I really liked ATDI, but never explored the genre much further. The article also included Fugazi as an early highlight of the genre, as well as Brand New, who I am familiar with and a band that does make sense as fitting on the border between emo and post-hardcore. I listened to a bit of Glassjaw, and revisited ATDI. I still really love ATDI, even though their songs are either completely nonsensical or at a higher level of poetry than I can understand. But the sound is so great. DLJ just can't match that, but I'm still happy they pushed me to revisit more of the genre. I think "Yank Crime" probably deserves a 3, but there were enough moments I really dug in between less-stellar stuff to allow for a slightly generous 4. Maybe I'm just in the mood for screaming?

Brilliant album, from a band I had never even heard of. Loved every song, but "do you compute" and "sinews" were the best ones. They remind me of late Nirvana and/or early Biffy Clyro - two of my favourites of all time!

Forgettable

Felt like Nirvana "lite" - good early 90s grungy vibes but lacking the songwriting chops that nirvana had. First song was pretty annoying though most of the album stayed pretty solid all the way through.

One of the hardest to get through albums I have heard so far on this list. While others I have rated low for being boring or not taking any chances, this is the first one I have gotten where it felt like the music was actively trying to be as annoying as possible which REALLY bugged me. Luau is just painful noise for the last couple of minutes. and Super Unison has an irritating dog whistle going off for the first 30 seconds of the song. While these songs stood out to me in a negative way, the album as a whole did not feature any successful riffs, melodies, and moments that made this worth listening to in spite of those agonizing parts (especially considering it is over an hour long). I do not consider myself a fan of dark/abstract emo rock so this album clearly is not for me, but it is hard for me to see any redeeming qualities that someone would get out of this even if they are a fan of the genre. I cannot deny that they took chances here (which keeps it from being at the very bottom of my list), but this is one I would never want to come back to. 1.5/5.

At teams quite creative, but generally quite grating and meandering. Doing something difficult with a guitar, or something that is not easily emulated, does not mean that it is good or elegant.
