Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Consider this a Public Service Announcement, this album is unlistenable.
Lo
It was just too noisy. I had to turn it off. DNF.
I guess I’m not invited to the birthday party.
Every song sounds the same.
Am only 500 albums into this list but seriously think I've found the worse drivel ever recorded. 100% talentless drivel start to finish.. Congratulations to all the idiots involved in producing this warm damp turd of an album.
Not for me.
Christ, please fuck off. Can't actually listen to this.
Punk - pass
ew
Brutal experience
No
Atrocious. Tedious, yelpy screamo emo with ultra-repetitive tendencies that inspired other painful music as In The Drive-In. One of the worst and most pointless albums I’ve done for 1001. Not just a Yank Crime but also an International Crime.
Post-Hardcore Post-Punk Emo Noise-Rock - this album gave me a headache. Some tracks, "Do You Compute" and "Sinews" for example, start off well, but then the "vocals" (shouting) start and the tracks go into a decline.
Bloody awful
I don’t think I was angry enough to listen to this. It just ended up being annoying and loud.
Meh
This is the worst Rock 'N Roll album I've had to displeasure of listening to in my life. It's just noise with what sounds like a voice in the background, moaning(it also includes the worst intro of any song ever. I'll let you be surprised, so I won't spoil it). Most tolerable track: "Do You Compute".
Another strange punk/ rock band. Strange music.
Not really my thing. I found it kind of annoying and forgettable, turning down the volume at one point. It's nice to listen to different stuff so I don't regret it but I won't be putting it on again.
ala-arvoista sontaa
post hardcore sucks
I'm beginning to think this site is all about trying to find out how many bad albums they can make me listen to. This one is real bad
Only using the most liberal of definitions could this be called good music
Nope! This is not for me at all.
How does anyone like this genre is beyond me, just scratchy noise and shouting. And why do I need to listen to it?
I like San Diego rock a lot. This was just annoying yelling. 1/5
Listened to 30 seconds of this which is probably not good enough but wasn’t getting good vibes 2/10
each song further down the tracklist has fewer and fewer listens hmmm, I wonder why
Not for me, irritating and every song sounds the same. 1/5
*no music, merely sounds and noises(mostly annoying)
High distortion. Standard bar fare.
Screaming, while playing instruments at highest volume is not music.
Crappy
nope
OK, it's slowly getting a bit strange, or I feel strange. I can't even remember when I gave the last album a positive rating. Is that what was intended? No, I can't imagine that it was intended. Should I praise crap to the heavens? I find that extremely offensiv. Maybe I should just take a break after this album. But now to the album "Drive Like Jehu" OK, I don't have to understand what that means. What I think I understand is the bands name "Yank Crime" I don't care about Yank in this context, but I understand "Crime" very well, because this whole album is a crime. The title "Sinews" on the compilation "Head Start to Purgatory" doesn't surprise me at all. The whole album is a kind of "purgatory experience" So once again the stars are clearly in the minus range. A note on the 'art work' of the album, the singer and guitarist really did a magic job. Enough now, otherwise I'll have to...
Yeeesh. Grating.
This was not good. It’s as if Primus, Rage Against The Machine and Offspring had a 3-way that did not end well.
Other than it being my nickname in high school, I could not relate to this. 1.25
Too much banging and screaming. Not my kind of music.
this album is a crime
This may have been a 2 but Luau was terrible and way too long and then it goes into a smoke alarm for 30 seconds at the start of Super Unison.
Surprised to see this San Diego band on this list. Rocket From The Crypt was the band everyone looked up to at the time. Not sure I was aware of the connection. My buddies shared the same bill with Jehu quite a few times. Perplexes me how the had a following at the time, let alone making it on this list.
# Album Name: Yank Crime # Artist: Drive Like Jehu # Rating: 1/5 # Comments: Never heard of these guys before. Fucking 1hr and 10 mins. These guys better be good. Honestly, that was dog shit. fuck me dead. Someone phone the police and arrest the author for this one. Still not as bad as opus dei. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
My least favourite thing I've listened to so far. I have other bands in this style that I enjoy but a lot of this wasn't good.
Noise. Nothing more to me, could not finish it
had to skip most of the tracks, "New Math" had nice instrumentation but then the vocals come in...
This album gave me tinnitus.
A lot of reviewers are hating on Sonic Youth for being nothing but noise, but when they hear this, they’re going to REALLY hate it. BTW, Sonic Youth is awesome, this is not!
Got through 3 songs and had to stop listening. This one was a big old miss for me.
not my thang. used to be my thang. i'm much more calm now.
Noise
I appreciate this list highlighting more obscure albums, but this one deserves to fade away into obscurity. Between the screeching guitars and the god-awful "singing", it's as if this album was designed to induce headaches. It was absolutely dreadful from the first song. A punk album does not need to be this long, and punk songs definitely shouldn't regularly be clocking in at over 5 minutes. A couple of these songs were 9 minutes and they felt even longer. At one point I thought I must be mercifully close to the end but I wasn't even halfway. The silence when it ended sounded delightful.
Hated it
The thing I like about punk songs is that they are fast, loud, and short. This album is missing one of those crucial elements. Can you guess what it is? Every song on here is twice as long as it needs to be. "Do You Compute" has a 1:45 intro with the same 6 notes played over and over again. "Super Unison" opens with 30 seconds of a tinnitus inducing ringing. I don't necessarily dislike these elements, but they go on for way too long.
Too noisy
Not my thing
Too long, too bad. Almost earned a 2 at times, but I’m not feeling generous.
I am not surprised this is the last album they recorded. the real question is why they were allowed to make 2 albums. Also, this album is way too long. This honestly gave me a headache!!!!
Do you compute?? Do you want to fuck off? Golden Brown, texture like shite Luau? Lu ow my ears are bleeding from this shit music. (Actually this song was just a little bad to it’s credit) What the fuck was the start of Super Union trying to achieve apart from annoying the listeners parents who can hear this album being blasted from their angsty son’s bedroom. New Intro was fairly pleasant but that was maybe just in comparison to everything before. The third worst version of New Math(s) I’ve heard (Lehrer, Burnham, these dweebs) Human Interest was fine, I was fairly neutral to it. Yeah just not that good music really. The only Yank Crime I care about is when those Massholes dumped a load of perfectly good tea in Boston Harbour.
Couldnt wait for this one to end
What the fuck is this garbage.
No
It was interesting, but probably wouldn’t listen again.
This was too much for me at 7am. DNF
Inaguantable.
Not a metal fan
Not sure how this one is on 1001 greatest albums. Maybe because of impact. It was repetitive and the singer was one dimensional. Good instrumentals though
Not for me
Not my cup of tea
Quite annoying dissonances in all the songs. Does not sound nice at all
No
Sweet Jesus what rubbish has this author found?
Instant headache.
I don’t mind heavier music or screaming in songs, hell my teenage years were full of it. But sometimes it really is just noise and nothing about this album was really sticking out to me. I just wanted to get to the end of it. Really makes you wonder how some records made it on this list. But hey if you dig it, crack on!
Apparently this is a post-punk album. Which I guess means it sounds like punk but is less fun. Quite the chore to stick it out for the whole album. Not a fan of scream singing. Even when I’m occasion there works be some instrumental melody, it would eventually evolve into the screaming again. And the air siren was just freaking mean. According to Wikipedia the band “quietly disbanded” after making this album. Not sure if that is code for “slunk away to find day jobs”.
I did not 'get' this at all. Don't get the name, or the album title. The music is really monotonous, and clearly no-one told them that punk died in 1977. Bailed after about 4 songs.
Seriously, what brain donor pays money or uses their precious time listening to shit like this.
Inaguantable.
LOUD. NOISES. (there are very few moments where the music comes together and sounds great. But the moments are fleeting at best) I was also shocked to find out that I had written that review during the 4th song. The album genuinely felt like it was wrapping up during it and it had felt like the right run time for an album...so that is probably the best way to explain this one
Loud. Not entirely pleasant. Obviously not for me
pass
Not good, 1
Straight hated it.
Hated this
Wouw.. a very unpleasant experience
Post-hardcore? Sounds like sexual frustration.
The real crime was subjecting me to this singer's yelpy vocals for over an hour. The only track I would ever consider listening to again is "New Intro", which was a halfway decent instrumental track. The rest here is a slam dunk in the trash bin
All sounds the same, nothing distinct about it compared to a million other emo bands. Why are the vocals so low in the mix, what's the point in having a singer when you can't hear them?
Do You Compute and Super Unison have TERRIBLE beginnings for normal ears. Not fun, not enjoyable. Don’t care how good it is after, having my cringe for the first 30 seconds is a strategy. Also, this music raises my heartbeat. Not really what I’m looking for when I’m trying to get through a Wednesday.
Screaming that makes me yawn.
Vibes: backyard punk party metal
That felt like God was testing me.
Huh?
I'm not listening to another math rock album. I'm sick and tired of this shit.
Yeah…….nope
Strong dislike
Nope not even a little
Not for me.
Not my deal.
Bah
I consider myself fairly high in openness when it comes to music, yet I couldn't get into this one let alone through it. It was just painful. Maybe I will try again some other day who knows. But If I want noise music, I'll just listen to MBV! That's some noise music with soul.
p753. 1994. 1 stars. Utterly redundant shouty punk rock that is 15 years too late. Why is this below average shit even on the list?
Shite
too heavy working:)
why did you make me listen to an hour of pure noise?
Screechy, angry tuneless. 1/5
just hue and cry
And I thought the Sex Pistols were bad...
Noise
terrible, hurt my ears, 1 star
The music was awful and the vocals sounded like screaming. I wouldn't take this album if you gave it to me for free!
It’s a no for me, dawg. I gave each song the old college try, but to be honest I don’t think I listened to any song in its entirety. And then I put on my Summer of Taylor Faves playlist.
Pre-listening: I think I listened to this a year or two ago while compiling an “early emo” playlist. One song (only), Luau, made the playlist. That doesn’t bode well. After listening: yeah, don’t care for this. The first album where no songs will make my ongoing playlist.
Seems like a RATM cover band tried to write their own stuff
Nope
69 minutes of shitty shouty noise that I only managed about 20 minutes of
Grating and unpleasant
Gefällt mir nicht. Sänger hat die voll nervige Stimme.
Sometimes it’s nice to get an easy and obvious 1 star album. This is often out of time and I’m not convinced these lads could play in time even if they really wanted to, I don’t think they are very talented musicians. This is horrible, nothing to redeem this shit. And an hour long? It’s a slam-dunk one star!
Not my vibe, too much screaming
Mmm, noise
Can't believe that this ever made it out of the garage. One.
Thanks i hate it
It's basically noise with a bit of music
I could appreciate the music for sure. I learned today what math rock is and I’m not mad about it. Lyrics weren’t it for me, but that’s okay.
Best song - Golden Brown
In 1 woord: vreselijk
Nada del otro mundo, sólo ruido.
I can see why I went through the entire decade of the 90s never having heard of them. Their music is ear stabbingly bad.
It isn't a fully blown screaming album but there are certainly elements of it. The album was entirely too long. I did not enjoy it. There is no need to revisit.
WTF. It is impossible to listen to
Nope, not my cup of tea
Got dizzy with this one
Hard, angry punk ain't my jam.
I didn't care for this album too much. the instrumentals and yelling got annoying and loud and none of the songs really stood out to me. the only song I somewhat liked was hand over fist because it wasn't quite as vocally heavy as the others, but I still wouldn't ever listen to it again. 3/10
jesusfkingchrist "Here Come the Rome Plows" is on the shortlist for worst rock song ever recorded. Overall: a great representation of the parts I hated about the 90s "alt" scene. TL;DR: No composition skills, gross screaming, faux-complexity as if showing off to high school freaks how much the world sucks and trying to pass off as mysterious art. NO. 0 anythings.
I could never see myself voluntarily listening to this shit ever again under any circumstance. If my life somehow ends up so far in the gutter to end up somewhere that this album was playing, I would survey my options and make my departure as quickly and efficiently as possible. Look, I’m sure they’re achieving everything they’d like to in this album and there’s certainly an audience for it. But I am not part of that audience
Ugh. I wish I could give this no stars.
Screechy and annoying. 1/10
Not for me. Loud discordant. I had a hard time getting thru even 30 seconds of any track on the album.
Nope.
Way too much senseless screaming
New Intro was the only unique song, everything else - eh
How can a "fringe-rock artifact" be one of only a finite number of records one must hear? This is tedious noise.
What I don't get with all this is two things: they are not very good at whatever it is they think they are doing, they don't play with imagination nor verve and they don't give you a good feeling about it. Now I'm not talking about Brotherhood of Man type "good feeling", I mean they don't evoke a good feeling through having something to say. I saw Bob Mould a couple of year's back and it was heavy, the loudest thing I've ever heard, and he didn't let up for hours. And I came away invigorated, high on the performance. With this they have nothing to say and they say it badly. That said, Super Unison has some ok moments, you can see what this might have been if they........
Headache inducing. Too much noise, too much screaming. Couldn't finish.
Absolute shit. Unlistenable
Awful
Not a fan
You know the scene in "Scott Pilgrim" with Crash & the Boys, where it takes six seconds for them to introduce "I'm So Sad, So Very, Very Sad," and that intro is longer than the actual song, which is only a four-count on the drums followed by the words "So sad" sung over two notes on the guitar and bass? This is sorta the opposite of that. Drive Like Jehu just scream "Do You Compute" for seven minutes, or "Rome Plows" for 5:45. Same level of lyrical content and complexity as Crash, but they take infinitely longer to perform it. And it's a small sample size, but I'm pretty sure Crash & the Boys are better musicians. I gave up halfway through the nearly 9.5-minute-long fourth track. Music may not be a race, but I've got shit to do, man. Like watch "Scott Pilgrim" for the umpteenth time.
I've never been so jealous of Vincent Van Gogh and Beethoven...
i remember bleh? but idk if i even listened to any
It seems as though this album will never end. It must end at some point, right? it’s at times like this I review the choices that have led me to this project.
Oh god no. Its US Garage band with early nu metal stylings. made me feel physically sick.
Bloody awful racket
Too much noise. Not worth finishing.
I couldn’t make it past track two. Not fair to review.
I’m the wrong audience. I think this is rubbish.
Only listened to parts of the first five tracks before fleeing this assault on my ears. Usually the only good thing that can be said about songs and albums like these is that they're really short. Not so this monstrosity.
Really not good at all. Songs way to long. Couldn’t get into it. 1/5
not good
Nope
Man, I connected with no part of this album. Felt like an hour plus of just screaming and I wanted to scream back at it. Not an enjoyable listen for me… but cheer to those who dig this album!
Shame on the list for wanting to steal 1 hour and 9 minutes of my wicked little life. But I maintained the upper hand: I stopped even trying to listen after what seemed like the 15th song.
bullshit
Och jongens, wat een ellende.
Horrible
Not for me. I managed to miss them the first time around. Sadly, that didn't hold.
Not for me. There were a couple of moments but they were fleeting. They were a band I completely missed the first time around, but this time I wasn’t so lucky.
Too hardcore for me, wasn't super enjoyable.
Very discordant and obnoxious. Would be better without the screamy lead singer
Absolute screaming, feedbacky ass. Nope.
Absolutely awful, nothing but screaming and what appears to be white noise. One upside, there are no cats crapping in my garden now
One of the hardest to get through albums I have heard so far on this list. While others I have rated low for being boring or not taking any chances, this is the first one I have gotten where it felt like the music was actively trying to be as annoying as possible which REALLY bugged me. Luau is just painful noise for the last couple of minutes. and Super Unison has an irritating dog whistle going off for the first 30 seconds of the song. While these songs stood out to me in a negative way, the album as a whole did not feature any successful riffs, melodies, and moments that made this worth listening to in spite of those agonizing parts (especially considering it is over an hour long). I do not consider myself a fan of dark/abstract emo rock so this album clearly is not for me, but it is hard for me to see any redeeming qualities that someone would get out of this even if they are a fan of the genre. I cannot deny that they took chances here (which keeps it from being at the very bottom of my list), but this is one I would never want to come back to. 1.5/5.
I'm not at a place where I can appreciate the energy and volume of their abrasive and scream-fueled rock.
I DO NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL! Rating: 2/10
crap
Not good. Kinda bad, actually. I'd give it 1.5 stars if I could, but I can't. It's really not the worst thing ever, but it's definitely not worth listening to.
Some time of punk? (because of the guy screaming all the time)
Awful noise
Utter & complete rubbish
This is dreadful. No melody, shouting, really abrasive sound.
Sucko.
1/5 didn't like it at all. It was irritating at times!
Very screamy lacking any originality.
helemaal niks voor mij, veel te wild

ironiquement j 'aurais souhaité partir ... sans avoir entendu cela
Loud, screamy, and garbled. Not a fan. Did not finish.
The perfect album.........if I had I been playing THPS. Not bad but too garage punk for me. The first 4 songs felt like one. Needs more variety.
