Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I'm happy that this kind of astringent, smash-mouth music exists in the world. Which isn't to say I like it much - whilst I can admire the animating spirit and willingness to play with song structure, I can't say Yank Crime ever reached me at an emotional level. That said, 'Luau' is a might piece of music, and I like a bit of spit and agitation now and then. In no hurry to listen again, however.
Overall, it was a fine album. I did not care for the screaming though. I really liked the guitar tones and did enjoy a few songs on this album. Overall, a decent album, just not really my thing. I'd like it a lot more if the songs were sung instead of screamed.
Reading the reviews for this, I was expecting worse but it wasn't that bad. Nothing super special, but the reviews make it seem a lot worse than it is. There are much, much worse versions of this type of music. Saying that, it doesn't do anything for me. 2.5/5
Look I'm not qualified to rate this. In fact I dreaded listening to it. But, piled high of caffeine, I went all in. And the first track delivered Here Come The Rome Plows is high octane (a cliche I know) and it didn't stop delivering. Last time I'll listen to it, but I respect those who get their energy from music like this.
A post-hardcore band I've never heard of before. Not really my type of music but I didn't mind it at all. Nothing mindblowing but not bad.
En ocasiones un tanto punk en otras más rockero. Predominio de guitarras, batería fuerte y voces agresivas.
I do like some math rock, this is solid but not my favourite from the genre
Nonni mähinää! Uusi tuttavuus tämä, mutta ei paha. Oon ehkä enemmän vanhan -82 hösselin fani kun tälläsen emomman ilmaisun mut on tässäkin puolensa. Jotain aika grungea tässä. Kansi on siisti 3/5
Hardcore emo math rock. It was interesting to listen to.
Like getting your ears shafted with a baseball bat wrapped in barbed wire; not bad if you like that sort of thing. Probably was a really important album to some floppy haired teenager back in the day. Best Tracks: Here Come The Rome Plows; Luau; Super Unison
Tony Hawk sounding screamo. Poorly mixed but many songs were long.
Bit too shouty and samey for me. Could've done with some smoother bits between the shouts
Anfang der Neunziger wurde viel geschrien. Die Platte klingt nach ihrer Epoche, ohne die Nirvana-hafte Rotzigkeit aber mit den raffinierteren Arrangements und Kompositionen.
Sounds a bit like Slynt. Probably better on the third or fifth listen. Still pretty neat.
it oscillates between "man, this is too much" and "i like this bit" - Tony 2022 I agree with Tony. Favorite track: Does Not Compute
2.5, technically impressive at points, cacophonous punk at others
Pas pire. On s’en va vers Refused et At the Drive In. Les pièces sont un peu longues pour ce qui s’y passe. Beaucoup d’énergie.
I wanted to like this but it was just really rough I though New Intro sounded kinda nice and I also love the multiple uses of 5/4 in the album but overall it was just kinda mid 5/10
This was pretty good. Some of the songs are a little on the long side, but they have a progressive quality, so they don't really feel that long as you're listening to them. Atonal, screamy, effective use of noise. Rocks hard. I like it. Fave Songs: Sinews, Super Unison, Human Interest, Golden Brown, Luau
Punk album with aggressive feel to it, overall good sound but some of it kind of sounds experimental? Didn't really find any "hits". Not my favorite, but wasn't terrible.
I'm not a huge fan of noise rock - this was fun but hard to listen to at times
I enjoyed this overall. Some of the songs were too long and veered a bit too much toward emo, but pretty good in general. 3 stars.

Прикольный альбом, очень драйвовый. Прям душевно драйвовый. Но не мое.
Post-hardcore is a real borderline genre for me. Most of my fav music is heavy and I listen a fair chunk of *traditional* hardcore, but this tends toward non-Seattle alternative sounds too much for my liking. It gets up and going, there are cool riffs and passages... but only for brief flashes. On the other hand, it descends into downright noise allllll the time. The singing is pretty cool and I can hear the potential, but it feels like an idea that wasn't fully fleshed out (I know such a later comparison isn't really fair, but see Clowns for this vocal style perfected). Drummer is well and truly on top of the game though, nothing virtuosic but he holds the entire thing together imo. I guess my biggest criticism is the song structure itself: it feels like the average song is 5% intro, 25% guts, then 70% long-winded dissonant outro. This formula gets old at 53min. Still, I tapped my foot enough that it gets a pretty easy 3. If it was half an hour it'd probably be a 4 tbh. 3/5.
Some killer guitar riffs happening on this album but I don’t understand why this would be a top album. Nothing to separate them between other bands.
Was not in the mood for this at all, so I don’t know I gave it a fair shake - although I also think it had some objective flaws. Some really intolerable noise garbage. And though it’s par for this particular course, this particular style of shouty vocals doesn’t for me improve at length.
I'm glad I gave this one a chance and listened to it all the way through. I try to listen to each of these openly as I attempt to scrub away preconceptions and past experiences with music, but it's often difficult to do so. In this case, as soon as I heard the vocals, I recoiled a little because I generally don't like listening to screamed and shrieked lyrics. I appreciate much about punk and post-punk and the countless offshoots and subgenres, but most of the time I don't very much enjoy a lot of that music on a consistent basis. While the screaming did get to me at times, the musicianship on this album is outstanding. They compose, perform, and record superbly well. This project is helping me in so many ways. Play on!
Good energy, did like.
screamy but not annoyingly, interesting guitar work
Rating: 5/10 Bests songs:
Normal
Pretty cool for the Genre - can see the Emo influences permeate decades from this album - not my favourite genre to be honest and struggled to find standout songs - but I would have loved this had I discovered it in my youth
Nope - shouty unsophisticated crap - or at least the first track was. 2nd feels a bit more interesting into the two central massive tunes with more music and less screaming, much better glad I listened to this - I'm relistening already
if you like punk you may like this
punk
Heerlijke hardcore punk, lekerre rifjes
Rähinäpunkia ilmeisesti jonkinlaiselta genren pioneerilta. Genre sinänsä miellyttää itseäni kovasti, ja tämänkin bändin äänimaailma on sinänsä ihan toimivaa. Valitettavasti biisit itsessään jättää vähän kylmäksi eikä kokonaisuus jaksa pitää mielenkiintoa yllä ihan riittävän tehokkaasti. Selkeä kolmonen kaikkine plussine ja miinuksineen.
Pretty unrelenting, I needed a little bit more to grab onto
I really liked the first track "Here Come the Rome Plows." My immediate thought was "this is prog punk!" Very dissonant and loved the opening bass line. "Do You Compute" made me think of Tool. I was liking everything until the first 30 seconds of "Super Unison" - thanks for hurting my ears. As the album went on, the word "relentless" came to mind. Too much feedback, too much dissonance, too much screaming. There were a lot of great moments, but I think I can only take this band in small doses. Rating it a three from sheer exhaustion.
Normally I'd turn this off immediately, but it's overpowering the noise from the construction trucks outside so I'll keep it. You know, this isn't awful. If I were better on my shit back in my emo/pop punk days I should have been listening to this. It's good for the style of music.
A little annoying but It is a good album.
It was okay. Didn’t enjoy the first song but to my surprise it got a little better. The music was good, the vocals were not.
3 1/2
Kinda comme ci comme ca on this one. Good musicianship, decent writing. Good punk. I think I have to be in the mood for this type of angsty punk. Today was not that day. Good marks for writing. Low marks for listenablility.
Just a real mid. Nothing interesting.
I liked it. I felt like it was an influence to some of the bands I listened in middle school, like At the Drive-In or The Fall of Troy. The sound here, compared to other punk bands from the era begins to feel a little more complex, like it's taking some things from progressive rock. And while the musicians from Drive Like Jehu aren't virtuosos, they do a pretty good job making the album flow.
Never heard of this even once. Sounds like pretty hardcore alternative. I hear bits of grunge in the first song.... let's see what it develops into. VERY hardcore grunge/alternative; sounds like sometimes Nirvana, without as much melody or catchiness. 3/5
Songs were decent, musically, but I didn't care for the screamo vocals.
Really liked this, never listened to them before. Not heard much hardcore
3.6 - I never learned how to connect with math rock on an emotional level. Definitely not sure what these songs are about - it’s likely a lot deeper and smarter than my measly mins can comprehend. Still, I can appreciate the musicianship on this album and enjoy it on an intellectual level.

I'd never heard of this before. It's reminiscent of Alice in Chains or Jane's Addiction. Still, no song on the album really jumped out at me and I'm unlikely to go back to it, so I'm not giving it a mediocre rating.
Glad I listened to this CD. I get why it's in the list. Honestly it is too much noise for me.
Very hardcore punk
It was fine, not really my genre.
Love the pure expression of emotion. However some parts devolve a little too much into the "noise" genre for my tastes. The melodic parts really get me pumped, just wish they broke out into it slightly more often.
Wow - never knew how much Cloud Nothings ripped off this sound. If you told me this was a Cloud Nothings album, I wouldn't have batted an eye. I would like it more if it was a shorter, tighter 40 min.
Trashy, Hardcore.

I really can’t get down
This is not my genre of rock. The songs all pretty much sound dull and the same and many of them go on way too long
Didn't enjoy
Nooit van gehoord… prima
Неизвестная группа. Обычный гранж/хардкор. Ничего выдающегося на мой взгляд
Kinda makes me angry for some reason. Nice guitars tho
It's like Fugazi but without the intriguing lyrics nor the fractured instrumentation. Not my jam. 2/5
I don't think this genre is for me. Not only are the songs bloated but the screaming and sound walls disintegrate the sound so that it becomes akin to...just sound.
they tried for a sound and missed it
Just didn't click with me
Not for me
I really don't like this.
The vocals were not great and some songs were way too long.
Could have been shorter
Really just seemed like pointless noise. Didn’t like.
Not a fan of punk. I love a lot of rock and metal, but I don't love this.
Not a fan
Idk what to say it about it. Just didn’t like the shit tbh
Noisy yet boring.
Started as loud thrash and then changed to ok music with bad production. Songs went from quiet to loud and back to quiet and i felt like i was watching tv where tge show and commercials aren't at the same volume. Frankly it really detracted from my enjoyment.
I had heard OF Drive Like Jehu but am fairly certain I had never actually listened to them. Not a genre I have spent much time with as an adult. And about a minute into the first track, I am reminded why: my old ears don't appreciate noise like they once did. This seems fine and I probably would have loved it had I heard it at the time it was released. Encountering it for the first time in 2026 just makes me feel old. These songs seem a lot longer than necessary. The first 30 seconds of "Super Unison" made me turn down the volume to nearly inaudible.
Very expressive, dark and spooky
Nothing special
Not really feeling it. Almost gave it a 1/5 but there has to be worse music out there 2/5
Listened to it two or three times because I wanted to figure out how to like it. But I couldn’t tap into it. It’s kind of how I imagine people wondering why someone would like mewithoutyou. Maybe I’ll try it again.
No me gusta.
interesting enough, but it was rather samey to the point of monotony. didnt help that some of the songs and the album as a whole were too long
I was a DJ at my college radio station. Stuff like this was our bread and butter. Doesn’t age well. It may not have even been very good to start. This is what Boomers think Nirvana sounds like. Screaming. Wailing guitars. Distortion and feedback to a punishing level.
It's not unlistenable, but neither is it memorable.
Not my genre, but holy fuck
Noisy. Sometimes in a good way, but mostly in a way that is not my thing. Rating: 3/10 Favorite Song: Do you Compute
Rating: 5/10 Review: Just meh. Not for me. Kinda liked some of the instrumentals but the voice was too much for me. Also sort of boring and one note. Listen again?: No
Super early emo. Can tell its like, influential but didn't enjoy. I want to give it 1.5
Bit too much shouty/whiny and very repetitive/long in patches without seeming to be clever repetitive. Maybe I'm too old for noise and want it more musical. One of the tags for it is "noise rock" to me more noise and not enough rock. It did expand my listening repertoire, so I don't regret listening to it but would not listen again or seek out another album by them. Trying not just to give everything a 3 cos it didn't inspire me. So it's not a 4 which makes it a 2.
Never heard of album or band before. More historically significant than must listen. Not one of my preferred styles either. The siren start to Super Unison made me look at my phone to see if this was a test or real emergency. 0 songs added to playlist.
Yeah sorry i know this thing is beloved and all, but i just can’t with hardcore, i liked the lyrical meaning though.
Didn't like, felt like it lacked substance and just couldn't get past the first 2 songs
I will say the one interesting thing about this album is it's part of a subgenre called math rock. I like math much more than I liked this.
Haven't heard of them. What a mess, supposedly it's post hardcore math rock whatever but it sounds like a whole bunch of nothing. It's just not interesting 2/5
Fun vocals, but I kinda get tired quickly of the same type of songs
1994. Second and final album. Catalyst for the eclectic San Diego music scene and the emerging national emo scene of the 1990s.
Listened to this while on a run and thought it was ok, but why was it so long?
Yeah I really don’t like this genre The instrumental parts where they just jam out for a bit aren’t too bad, I bet it’d be cool to see live. I think the variety’s all right too, the tracks that slowly build up make the long runtimes a lot more bearable and interesting There’s a ton to complain about though, starting with what the hell was up with that 30 seconds of tinnitus on Super Unison? I feel like there were a bunch of moments on this one where they were trying to piss the listener off which I really dislike. The vocals are actively detrimental to the tracks; the genre’s definitely known for rougher vocals and uninteresting range but the album would be 100% better without them. Each track overstays its welcome by a couple mins at least, as well as the album itself being a couple songs too long I’m really tempted to give this one a 1 due to that awful first song and the aforementioned 30 seconds of torture but I think the instrumental parts are just alright enough to spare it from that fate
When I downloaded this album and saw that it was nearly an hour and ten minutes long, I started having negative feelings toward it immediately. I acknowledge this kind of pre-judgement is unfair, but my prior experience has been that most albums over an hour long feel tedious by the time you finish them. Then I had a quick look at the Wikipedia page and saw that the genre was post-hardcore and noise rock, and I only became more skeptical. One thing I've learned about myself from this project is that noise rock and adjacent styles are very much not my cup of tea. Different genres of music emphasize or value different aspects of music rhythm, melody, harmony, simplicity, virtuosity, energy and restraint. Most punk I've heard is heavy on rhythm and energy/aggression, and light on melody and tenderness. This just isn't to my taste most of the time. All this is to say that I was fully prepared to hate this album, but instead I merely disliked it. I feel like I've had a little breakthrough in realizing that if you don't think of the harsh sounding vocals as a human voice, but instead let it wash over you as just another instrument, then it fits in well with the heavy, distorted guitars and adds to the overall vibe instead of just seeming like tuneless screaming.
4/10
Too long
This just seemed to go on and on.
Every song was good, every song overstayed its welcome.
isn't music supposed to sound good 2/5
2.4
too noisy
yikes
So much noise. I'm sure these guys had a great live punk show, or something, but the labels in this era throwing money around and signing anybody that could pick up a guitar and scream into a mic hoping to find the next Nirvana often, in this listeners' opinion, resulted in audio duds like we have here.
I did not enjoy this, but then this is not music that I enjoy so that result is largely expected. It was not terrible though. There were little gems of instrumentation nestled in minuscule little parcels in amongst the noise and screaming. They accounted for such a small percentage of the whole album though, so mostly insignificant. The rest was just screamy noise and I really battled to get through it. The second half was slight better than the first half, which very possibly upped it from a 1 to a 2. Sinews was the standout track. 2 stars
I don’t want to sound like an annoying grandpa but this was definitely a bit to loud and rambunctious for me, personally. Some of the instrumentals were very good, but I wasn’t a big fan of the vocals.
Long drawn out and a lot of screaming. I’ve heard worse punk albums, but this one is not good. There are a couple of shining moments with those are so far and in between the very long run time I was very bored listening to such a loud album.
Punky. Bit not my thing. I'm not an angry teen lol
There may have been a time when I went for this kind of music, but now it doesn’t have much for me. All pretty noisy and samey
No, pure noise, did-not-like.
I liked the first half of the album, I love punk but some elements I did not like.
Pretty noisy. It came out in 1994 and it reminds me a little of Quicksand Slip (1993) or Helmet Meantime (1992), which checks out. For me this album is just a little too noisy with not enough melody. Not interested in giving it a second listen.
Nirvana, Fugazi, Sonic Youth…. They all did it better. The songs on here are too long and it’s hard to digest. I thought I liked track three but found out that it was either the end of track two, or the beginning or middle of track three. Definitely not the last part of track three
Painful. And repetitive
Definitely not my genre of music. Too repetitive musically n lyrically. I did find the songs at the end interesting Sinews Hand Over Fist and Bullet Train to Vegas.
I don't know what exactly it is that doesn't appeal to me about hardcore. But I think it may be vocals, which seem to be attempting to maintain maximum intensity throughout every song. Calm down, guys, take a breath, put some dynamics into the music. Anyway, some of the noise reminded me a bit of Nirvana, which was kind of cool. But yeah, not really for me.
2.5 stars This could grow on me. But my first impression was that this was too chaotic for intense for me. I stated to get into it at parts. But you really have to be in the right mindset for something this abrasive. Post hardcore is not my genre, although I think elements of it have inspired music I truly love. I need a little more melody in my music, even if it contains the noise and screaming. And the math rock time signatures are fine, but after a while it feels like doing homework rather than listening to something do enjoyment. That is what would keep me from revisiting this I believe.
Abrasive and unrelenting, with many songs running for the close to ten minutes. Highlights include Luau, Super Unison and New Math. This album seems to have been labelled with lots of different genres, from post-rock to emo to math rock. I can see how it may have been influential to each of those, but it’s not really my cup of tea.
Not my thing
no thanks not for me
What a different time
A little heavier than I like
This isn't so much my thing, but I still appreciate hearing important albums outside my comfort zone--and to be fair there were moments I really got into it.
Didn't enjoy the vocals
These albums that were not commercially successful or often, not even critically successful upon their release are always an interesting listen. That we look back and note that these albums broke new ground in music that an audience wasn't ready for, and show respect for that is great. However, often these albums are for genres that I don't know or like the artists that spawned from this newly broken ground, so it is hard for me to go, "wow. Yes, look at what these guys were doing with distorted noise rock sounds in 1994, can you believe it?" While it was too long, I often enjoyed the more instrumental parts of the songs. Probably still a 2 though.
It's loud and punk rock, after a certain point it kind of just became noise to me.
Album 18 Top 3 favorites off the album: New Intro, Hand Over Fist, Here Come the Rome Plows I balked at the run time on this one. I'm no stranger to long albums, but I made the choice to look at the reviews of this one before beginning it. "Loud," "noisy," "too much screaming," and so on and so forth. I was nervous. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the opening. After that, the album became a little grating in how repetitive some tracks were (4 songs in). The guitar became a little too gritty for me, and the screaming wasn't the kind I enjoy. I don't think Super Unison needed to be *that* long, but I willingly listened to Rundgang Um Die Transzendetal Saule Der Singularitat (girl where are all the umlauts and proper capitalization at?), so it's probably just a matter of, "I don't like this song very much so it feels longer than it is." Unfortunately, that was how I felt about most of the album. No beef with it, just not my thing. I've heard worse, I've heard better, this wasn't a bad experience. Also, that one review that says, "I think I love my parents too much to fuck with this album" is phenomenal. Short and sweet.
This is fairly shit. 2/5
Too angry for me
I'm no hater of loud, driving music but there ain't a lot of charm in this one. Hardcore often just sounds like noise for the sake of it. 2/5
Vehicles didn't even exist when he was alive, so this makes no sense.
Nao estava muito no mood punkish, mas tem boas guitarras.
This was a serious slog. It feels like they took a decent idea and just buried it under layers of unnecessary noise. The songs drag on way past their expiration date. That length kills any momentum they manage to build. It’s loud and chaotic, but not in a way that feels rewarding. Just tedious. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Golden Brown - Bullet Train to Vegas
I already feel physically assaulted two minutes in. Screeching, screaming and kicking… But I can appreciate the quieter moments and the instrumentation: eg large parts of Do You Compute or New Intro and Sinews. Regarding Super Unison - wow, he can sing normally! It’s two stars because of the band and because he can sing when he wants to. That doesn’t make it as bad as the albums I gave one star.
Apparently I listened to this and have no recollection of it. Not sure how positive that could be.
Screamo, thrash post-punk hardcore is not my vibe. I do love the intricacy to their playing, but don't love when it gets all smashed together in a ball of noise. On this album, the vocals and scratch/grating effects on guitar are off putting. +1 for naming a song Hand Over Fist but -1 for it not being a cover of the Rush song. 2⭐️
Ugly.
Was a bit too gloomy for me
The way this album starts so terribly and gets so good in the second half reminds me a lot of Houmous & Chutneys famous LP ‘Just You Wait Til Disc 2’ 2.4 12/12 Sinews (original version)
Meh. Not my thang.
furious, frenzied, hurtling along with nagging, neighing, ragged guitars and whining/screaming vocals which are mixed far back - obviously they are very agitated about something, but none of the words shed any light on what that might be. a tiresome, enervating listen
#766. I don't know what this is, and I am not interested in learning. 2/5: nah
I think this album is pretty awful. I'll stretch to two stars only because I think the drummer is pretty good.
This album sounds like is carefully crafted and it's suprising that the result is this disapointing. What a medicore expierience.
typical punk/grunge "underground" not mainstream band/album i really liked that type of music back in 2022 2/5
Not great at 9am. You can really hear the emo and pop punk that came after this, which I read about before playing the album. Overall, not for me but I can literally hear the influences.
Sounds a lot like early At the Drive-In or Sparta. Pretty discordant, and disheveled, but I do like the way it’s going. Raw enough to be difficult to listen to all the way
Lots of screaming and repetitiveness, a few good songs that I genuinely liked and vibed with but couldn't press like on any. Good to learn about a new garage band, but that's about it.
decent album but it went on for waaayyy longer than it had to. this should've been like 30 minutes long honestly
Pre: no clue Post: punk isn't my thing currently , was waiting for this to be over, some decent built to spill like moments though these guys did it first
A big beautiful noise from the early 90's!
Perhaps more influential than it is good?
A little chaotic and disorganized for me:
Was soll dieser scheiss Pfeifton bei Super Unicoirn, dachte ich hab Tinnitus gekriegt. Nicht meine Musik
Not for me.
I guess this is post hardcore? Apparently some band that only existed for about 5 years. Not my thing
2/5 Some interesting moments. The rest is terribly produced, terribly played and terribly sung punk music.
A musically intense and progressive post-hardcore album with complex guitar work and unpredictable song structures that kept me engaged. The instrumental side is inventive and full of energy, but the vocals didn’t connect—they felt more like noise than expression, which dulled the impact for me. Impressive musically, but not quite a standout overall.
Encheu o saco nas quatro primeiras músicas. Geralmente é o tipo de música que eu gosto de ouvir, e estaria em muitas playlists. Me lembra um pouco Middle Class Rut se fosse irritante e repetitivo.
I like some of the punk on here, but this did nothing for me.
It was just fine
90's punk that's not as good as other releases
Yeah this wasn't for me. Psychedelic stuff is fine from time to time but this just wasn't the day for it. Bullet Train to Vegas was pretty alright.
Vihaisilla miehillä on jääny kitarat virittämättä.
I can see how this fits many people, but it wasn't really for me. Too much screaming. They have some decent riffs going that I can imagine are done justice on a bit louder good sound system.
Some hits and misses, but i really couldn't get over the vocals. The misses outweighed the hits too. Honestly a punk album over 1 hour is way to long. Keep it short and sweet.
Not really for me
Went in blind. A mix of post-punk / early hardcore sound. Was reminiscent of my early days going to local hardcore shows. I could see how this might have been influential on the hardcore genre but it ultimately wasnt for me
Drive Like Jehu’s Yank Crime is a screeching collision of tangled guitars, screamy vocals, and relentless drums, a chaotic wall of noise where a bassline occasionally claws its way to the surface, like a drowning swimmer gasping for air. Imagine Sonic Youth’s dissonant sprawl crash-testing Fugazi’s wiry intensity, only stretched past the point of comfort—songs like “Do You Compute” and “Luau” drag past the seven- and nine-minute marks, daring your patience as much as your eardrums. The record finds fleeting clarity in “Golden Brown,” where the band leans into a more straightforward punk drive, but elsewhere the screeches and buzzes (see the mosquito-tone intro of “Super Unison” or the Kim Gordon-ready backdrop of “Human Interest”) feel more like endurance tests than catharsis. For those who worship noise rock’s messier saints, this may play like scripture; for the rest of us, it’s a sermon best endured from the back pew.
Oke, eerste indruk, aboslute tyfus herrie.
Not my thing, also very obscure fucking album?
Nope…
This doesn’t really do much for me. It has elements I like, but not pulling through.
I liked this more than I expected to. Some of the longer tracks got a good groove going. But ultimately it was too thrash-y and hardcore for me.
-pretty back -some songs were off beat -too much going on in some songs
Foooome
That was a challenge. At first it had that early 90’s rage that at the drive in or the Nirvana bleach album had. Unfortunately the vocals weren’t as strong and the songs seemed longer than needed. Very repetitive. Cool to hear but probably my last time.
Not for me
i was not a fan of this. i guess i just don't like the emo genre. i read up on them, and can appreciate wat they did on the forefront of this type of music, but generally was not a fan.
Too long
Another dnf, I just hate listening to angry music.
I feel like I just listened to the same song 12 times.
So much obvious talent, but very raw. It never comes together into something that actually works.
Joo ei
Tälle vois antaa vielä mahdollisuuden.
Saan työpäivän aikana kuulla tarpeeksi tällaista sekasorron kaltaista älämölöä. ⭐️⭐️
I was not interested, to grindy and unpleasant. If I want something on this tone I prefer metal
Seriously the number of punk albums on this list is outrageous. It's really a shame that they aren't of better quality. This one is no different. It just isn't really that good. 2 stars out of kindness.
Kan sikkert være bra, men ikke morgenmusikk når jeg er sliten. Da er det for hardt når jeg ikke har noe forhold til det fra før
2/5
Me not for me
I realised after listening to this for about half an hour that I'd accidentally put it on shuffle. No way I'm starting again. 2*
I don’t get it, my favourite was the stripped back last track, the rest were forgettable.
I didn't mind it at first, but then I saw it was over an hour of this dude screaming and just said nope. Glad I never heard this back when I was a teen.
Super Unison //
When I downloaded this album and saw that it was nearly an hour and ten minutes long, I started having negative feelings toward it immediately. I acknowledge this kind of pre-judgement is unfair, but my prior experience has been that most albums over an hour long feel tedious by the time you finish them. Then I had a quick look at the Wikipedia page and saw that the genre was post-hardcore, and my misgivings only grew. Possibly I actually frowned while skimming the article. One thing I've learned about myself from this project is that punk and adjacent styles are very much not my cup of tea. Different genres of music emphasise or value different aspects of music - rhythm vs melody vs harmony, simplicity vs show-offy displays of virtuosity, energy vs restraint/tenderness. Most punk I've heard is heavy on rhythm and energy/aggression, and light on melody and tenderness. This just isn't to my taste most of the time. All this is to say that I was fully prepared to hate this album, but instead I merely disliked it. I feel like I've had a little breakthrough in realising that if you don't think of the harsh sounding vocals as a human voice, but instead let it wash over you as just another instrument, then it fits in well with the heavy, distorted guitars and adds to the overall vibe instead of just seeming like tuneless screaming
Sure this album was influential but it sucks, so who cares?
mm. the sound is fun but a bit unvaried. very long but often low on ideas. best moments are instrumental rhythmic ones. best tunes: do you compute, luau, new intro, human interest, sinews (great track)
Not a Emo consumer. Felt like more. Sad that the lead singer, Robert Froberg passed in 2023. Liked the "Luau" and "Plow" tracks. Not a lot depth.
Not for me.
2.5
My mistake was listening to this on the morning commute as it is not a chill album whatsoever. Didn’t hate it but no songs I’s return to!
01) Here Come the Rome Plows - 5,5 02) Do You Compute - 5,0 03) Golden Brown - 5,0 04) Luau - 5,0 05) Super Unison - 5,0 06) New Intro - 5,0 07) New Math - 5,0 08) Human Interest - 5,0 09) Sinews - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,06 (51/100)
Not for work! Requires rage as a vibe!
I keep hearing glimmers of legit musical talent, then someone starts screaming (indecipherably, but he feels some type of way to be sure). Followed almost immediately by feedback that threatens to shake your fillings out. It's 10AM, I just can't.
Feels ahead of its time
This isn't my taste.
This was just too much noise. There was nothing appealing here.
Listenable.
I dunno, I already have a Shellac record, so I think I'm set for math rock that is also angry.
Whoa...2 in a row that I've never heard of. And also 2 in a row that just don't do it for me. *shrug*. This is more interesting to me than the previous one (Penance Soiree). Not a genre I particularly know much about but I do feel this album had some thought put behind it. In the end, though, just not my thing.
Well, they certainly succeed in the "loud and chaotic" department, which seems to be what they are going for. If that's the kind of music you're wanting to hear, they will not disappoint.
Really couldn't get into this one, despite wanting to. I feel like a lot of music in this genre is carried by its vocalists and this one didn't do it for me.
The first song was unpleasant to listen to, so I was pleasantly surprised when some songs where pretty nice. Still not music I will listen to again.
This could have been 30 min but even that might be a stretch. Not horrible I just dont love being yelled at for an hour.
can not
There's noise, grunge, punk, metal, and rock. Some tracks are actually not that bad, but nothing I would like to ever listen to again.
Not my cup of tea
not for me! maybe i need to listen again
Not sure there's ever a need for an extended period of high pitched air raid siren wail. There were a few other points of unnecessary, slightly painful sound, but for the most part this album was fine if definitively not our cuppa tea
Meh
один раз послушала и закрыла, день спустя конечно уже слабо помню. было громко и неприятно
Once I’d got through the shouting on track one I did like a bit of the guitar on track two and then I gave up.
Noise. Just noise. Occasionally, a track began with a bit of musicality, but, then more noise. And not fun noise, eitger. To be fair, I listened to the whole 'effing mess and it's just noise.
听多了会脑梗
Zu viel
Noisy
Spirited and noisy.
He was really generic loud screaming punk music
postpunk, hardcore rock, for langt og for højt
Trop punk sale
Currently in an avalanche of these low to mid tier punk and punk adjacent albums, send help.
This is a tough one. I like this genre, and while I’ve never heard Drive Like Jehu before, it transports me to a time when I was listening to similar music. There’s nostalgia here for sure. But this just isn’t getting over the threshold for me to like it for some reason. Not a single song got it’s hooks into me, and for that to not happen over the course of an hour 10 that’s not good.
Nope. I have a friend who's in a hardcode band; he's great. I went to one of his shows and had a good time; the people in the crowd were very friendly. I like this album cover image with the rough ink drawing. I do not like the music. Too shouty and harsh.
Glad to be introduced to it even if it is not my jam
קול אבל לא הייתי שומע את זה יותר מפעם אחת
Enjoyable, but also not very readable as multiple songs.
overall not my thing but some parts of some songs pinged my "ooh, this would make a cool sample" brain
A few standout tracks but overall a little too devoid of melody, I know I know it's punk rock and I like a lot of punk rock alright, and I know part of the deal early on was purposefully making noise but I don't have to enjoy all of it. 2.5
Like every other punk rock band of this era. Distorted guitar and a terrible vocalist.
1994, the year I was born and also the year this album was released. Now, 30 years on - unlike myself, Yank Crime has aged nicely. Its punk, antiestablishment and-all- around “who cares” themes are present across all the tracks. It’s loud and in your face. Albeit this would not be my first choice, however, listening to this album does inspire me to stick it to the “man”. Notable standouts, Sinews, Hand over Fists and Golden Brown.
I tried but couldn’t past the 3rd track, nonsense!
Not sure about this one. I'd probably like it if I were in the right mood but let's see how it pans out. On further listen I don't love it but don't hate it. 2-3 rating would be right I think
Way too long.
I did not care for this. Was much more interested in the instrumentals then the music. A low two. Bullet train to Vegas was kinda fun?
If you take the vocalist out of the equation this is actually decent music, but my god is the singing difficult to listen to.
Interesting that their compilation album was called Head Start to Purgatory. I feel that is very apt.
I'll grant them this, there's more going on musically than grates the ear. But what the fuck. I'm going to guess Scott liked it, but this is some jackoff journalist's flex to show how eclectic they are. Jehu drives like a noisy asshole. Bet he crashed his chariot into a tree.
Completely not my genre.
Angsty screeching has never sounded more mediocre. When it leans more into alt rock than punk, its ok but when its more punk it just comes across very amateurish and chaotic. About halfway through every song started to meld together and I could not really differentiate them. 4/10
Not my cup of tea. Mostly screaming over semi-melodic noise and feedback. There is some talent here, but it's not my cup of tea,
Felt like the same song
Screaming anger like Kurt on In Utero, does not have the melody like Nirvana which is what set them apart from most other punk/hardcore/grunge bands. Kurt could put a melody into any song however angry. This is more hit and miss and some of the songs are way too long. This will take multiple sittings 😔
These guys can rock but strange choices designed to be very annoying.
If ever there was an album begging for 2 min songs and 28 min runtime this is it. Over an hour is just ridiculous. This is skating near 1* territory but I did like some of the instruction so I’m rounding up. 1.75/5
kinda wack 2/5
It's too early in the morning for this
Ungood.
Noise/post-hardcore/emo album from the mid 1990s - this genre is really not my thing in general. This album didn't have much melodies, it is just too aggressive music, but it was somewhat cohesive and more bearable than many other albums in the genre. After the first 10 minutes I thought it would be a 1 but overall it was a bit better than that, so it's a 2 from me.
Ok
Meh. A lot of noise. A couple cuts may be alright for a workout playlist but I can’t think of another time I would ever want to hear any of this again.
I dont mind loud, noisy, and chaotic like this, but do the songs have to be 9 minutes long?
My reluctance to getting into this genre has never been about the instrumentals. Honestly, I really appreciate what I hear in that regard on this album. The vocals are where I struggle. And the repetitiveness. They either hit or miss for me most of the time, and here they miss more than they hit. But they aren't terrible. Fav Tracks: Here Come the Rome Plows Least Fav Tracks: N/A
Totally unconnected but I had shingles jab at doctors yesterday and like last time I had one reacted badly overnight. Woke up this morning very delicate so this was not the album to suit how I felt. Needed ambient but got the complete opposite x100 with this. Even trying to put myself in a place where my physical condition didn’t matter, I’m afraid that I couldn’t connect with this. If the shouty lyrics had been dialled down a touch I could have found bits to my liking. Some nice guitar and bass interplay at times were good. But that voice!!! I did persevere turning my speaker down low to suit my mood but then everything sounded the same. A low level drone which did not suit the music but today I was unable to play it loud. 2/5 14/1/25
I like punk but this album was a slog. It is a shame for punk music that albums like that are on the list.
Harsh but skilled
too heavy for me
Sorry, but this album is crap. It just sounds like self-indulgent noise without even a half-hearted attempt to resemble listenable music. I love the Ramones so I'm not averse to punk music, but this sounds like high schoolers banging on their instruments to get out their teen angst. I'll give 'em a 2 for making the effort, but this album is not worthy of this list.
Hardcore punk
This just got to be a little too much.
Not something I would usually listen to, just did not resonate with me.
Good. It was good. Each song a bit too long but good band music
Uff da
Meh
Songs are way too long... And not good. Screechy and whiny
90's emo. Not much more to say.
Not my favorite genre but I can see the appeal. Very difficult for me to judge but I think this is a good album that isn't for me. Fav Track: Do You Compute / Sinews
Yank Crime is an album I didn't enjoy personally but I felt enriched after listening. Yes, it was weird, but I could tell that Drive Like Jehu influenced others. The instrumental parts, which frankly was their biggest strength, delved into the progressive territory. The post-punk reminded me of Green Day, who were just getting their start at this time. In fact, this album's release in 1994 pre-dates that emo music movement in the aughts!
I was intrigued to give this a listen initially for one reason: I had always attributed the emo movement to the 2000s, but Wikipedia was discussing this album in terms of the emo genre. Sure enough, upon listening, there were definitely some sounds present that was post-punk bordering on what would become emo; I have no doubt that this album played a part in inspiring the emo sound. This album was interesting, but it didn't really capture me. It was probably about a 2.5 for me, but I don't think it did enough for me to round it up.
shouty American punk, music not bad, but the vocals hurt my ears
4/10. Had some good moments, but again, the screaming isn't for me.
Favorite Track: Sinews
Didn't expect to like it after the first song, but honestly it was manageable. It wasn't good though. And way too long. This is math rock! Don't care for it.
Built of an assault for a Sunday morning!
The bad stuff - shrill, unpleasant sounds, guitar tone, repetitive riffs, annoying screaming vocals - override the good (drumming). Did not enjoy.
